■ MAKE-A-WISH
Make-a-Wish recipient gives back By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
An Ashburton local who benefited from the good will of the Make-aWish foundation is doing her best to give back to the organisation, even if it means walking down the side of a building. Hazel Redmond recently took part in the Rope for Hope event that aimed to raise more than $100,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation by making 54 participants abseil down a central Auckland building. The aim was for each participant to earn sponsorship and pledges for taking part in the event on the 17-storey building at 205 Queen Street on the corner of Queen and Victoria streets. “It was a pretty incredible experience,” Redmond said “It is not something you would
normally get to do and, being a wish child, getting the chance to give back in a different way was really cool.” Redmond had her wish granted in 2012 of meeting fashiondesigner Karen Walker while recovering from the debilitating and life-threatening illness encephalitis. She has now been able to use her story to raise funds for Makea-Wish and spread information about the charity. “I did a speaking event at a conference in Auckland to more than 1000 people and through my story that inspired more than 40 people to come forward afterwards and commit to being ongoing sponsors which was just amazing,” she said. “It was special to see just what kind of impact my story could have.”

Worksafe practices under scrutiny By Linda cLarKe
Linda.c@theguardian.co.nz
Worksafe’s prosecution practices have been under scrutiny by the Court of Appeal as it deals with the fallout of a workplace accident at Talley’s Ashburton’s vegetable processing plant in 2015. A woman was seriously injured and is now a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair, court documents say. It is alleged an employee was operating a forklift to stack emp-
ty bulk bins and the woman was struck by bins on the forklift that toppled backwards and over the forklift cab. Six months later Worksafe charged Talley’s with breaching health and safety legislation, but the case has been the subject of legal argument ever since. A judge in the Ashburton District Court dismissed the charge in 2016, saying Worksafe’s charging document was defective in three areas, but Worksafe appealed the
decision and it was overturned by the High Court. Talley’s then appealed that decision, repeating concerns about Worksafe’s prosecutorial practices. Worksafe had laid a charge with insufficient detail and then altered a summary of facts about the incident, lawyers said. The company argued that Worksafe’s approach of filing an unparticularised holding charge just before expiry of the six-month time bar and providing particulars lat-
er, out of time, was an abuse of the court process. Worksafe also appealed an aspect of the High Court decision. It said it had used the same process in other prosecutions, without realising its charging practice was impermissible. No bad faith had been intended and it had since changed its practice and was providing the necessary level of detail with its charging documents. The Court of Appeal this month dismissed both appeals, saying it
had to balance the public interest in ensuring charging practices were not unlawful against bringing those accused of offences to trial. Worksafe says Talley’s had failed to carry out a detailed and effective hazard assessment for work in the coolstore area with procedures to separate forklifts and pedestrians or other workers, and that it had not ensured that the forklifts provided could safey stack bulk bins five high.

Farewells and welcome at Ashburton police station By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Community leaders have had the chance to farewell the old and welcome in the new at the Ashburton Police station on Thursday. Ashburton’s former senior sergeant Phil Dean hosted an afternoon tea at the police station to bid his farewell to people from groups such as the Neighbourhood Watch, and introduce them to the town’s new senior sergeant Matt Emery. “It is good to be able to get the chance to meet community figures, but it does also mean that I am not a stranger to them either,” he said. “Policing is policing, but each area has its own vibe.” Emery is expected to fill the role for about three months until a full-time replacement is found for Dean. Currently in charge of the Canterbury rural area which covers from North Canterbury down to Selwyn, Emery is expecting to face similar challenges in the Ashburton district. “Coming from rural communities where the problems are similar, I expect things to be similar in a way to Rolleston and Rangiora,” he said. area down to Timaru, was also present, and only had positive things to say about the retiring Dean. “It is always a shame to lose someone like Phil, especially someone with a real strength in relationships in the community,”
he said. “I really feel he has moved Ashburton forward and it is going to be a great opportunity for whoever comes in as there is a great foundation here.” When it comes to finding the full-replacement for the job,
Gaskin is not without concerns about the role. “I always worry when we advertise full-time positions because you never know how many people you are going to get applying,” he said. “It is a different role to a lot of
other places, it is more full-on than normal and there is a real combination of operations, admin and community work. “It is also best if they are local and know the community as that makes embedding themselves in the community a lot easier.”
Civic plans to air in new year By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Early next year, the community will have its first opportunity to find out what Ashburton’s new council administration offices and public libraary will look like. The big ticket project has been on the drawing board for successive councils over many years, but it gained momentum during 2016 when site options went out for public consultation. From a list of options, Baring Square east was identified as the preferred site and planning
Hamish Riach for what was anticipated to be a $16 million (plus funds from the sale of some council owned
Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said the council intended to begin formal discussions on plan options with the community early in the new year. The new complex will be built across sites that are currently a mix of occupied and vacant land. It will require the demolition of the Baring square church hall and the old county council building. While there was a desire in some quarters to see this building retained, that would not be the case, Riach said.
“Those plans do not include refurbishing the old County Council building, with the choice of the Baring Square site being the utilisation of bare land in order to maximise the new civic facilities,” he said. While demolition of the county building and the church hall were critical to the development, the council would not be demolishing historic Pioneer Hall; this would be incorporated into the new build, Riach said. Pioneer Hall has a heritage listing in the council’s district plan.

properties) project. Little progress was made last year with site options revisited, but this year work began in earnest. Land deals were done with the Methodist Church and a private landowner of a Havelock Street property. A project manager was appointed – Athfield Architecture were employed to design the complex and a raft of engineering tenders are close to being let. To date most discussions have not been in the public arena, but

■ FONTERRA
Ashburton farmer gets vote for Fonterra board Tim Cronshaw
Tim.c@Theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton farmer John Nicholls has won the nod of Fonterra farmers to fill the last of three director positions on the Fonterra board in yet another twist of a twopronged election. Fonterra shareholders voted in favour of Nicholls, who received 53 per cent of their voting support, over Jamie Tuuta, who earned 37 per cent support. Christchurch-residing Nicholls is a co-director/owner of the Rylib Group, with six farms in the Ashburton and Hinds districts. He is chairman of the Mid Canterbury irrigation scheme, MHV Water, formed last year after the merger of Mayfield Hinds Irrigation and Valetta Irrigation and was previously a Fonterra shareholders’ councillor. Nicholls takes up his position on the board immediately. The result appears to be a further stand by farmers to let the co-operative know of its disapproval after Fonterra posted its first loss in 17 years and went through the expensive exercise of paying out rival milk giant Danone from the 2013 contamination scare and writing down the value of its Chinese investment in Beingmate. Nicholls was a self-nominated candidate while Tuutu, a Taranaki businessman, won the backing of the board’s independent selection panel. This might suggest that farmer shareholders shunned the board’s recommendation for another farmer director on the board. The decision marks the end of a double election with plenty of twists and turns. Initially five candidates stood for three directorships. Last month shareholders voted in Zespri’s exiting chairman Peter McBride and Leonie Guiney, a former director, but Nicholls, Tuutu and sitting director Ashley Waugh failed to get 50 per cent voter support. That left one seat vacant and another election had to be held. Waugh stood down and the remaining pair were left to vie for
the remaining seat. The original rules stated that unsuccessful candidates were unable to stand again when Fonterra held a special election after not enough candidates obtained more than 50 per cent of supporting votes. However, the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council changed the rules to allow Tuuta and Nichols to compete for the vacant director spot. At the time council chairman Duncan Coull said in an email to shareholders that the council had carefully considered options to find candidates for the second election and what was best for the co-operative before reaching its decision. He said the new approach provided shareholders with a choice between candidates who had strong support in the first election. The election’s timing also allowed the board to move forward with its “performance priorities’’. The council said new candidates would have the opportunity to put themselves forward next year as part of the next director election cycle. Many farmers and analysts considered the failure of a third director to be elected during the November election to be a shareholder protest against Fonterra’s poor financial result and the treatment of Guiney who was controversially prevented by the board from contesting her seat again in 2017. Guiney served on the board for three years but failed to win board nomination last year. She has several farms in South Canterbury with husband Kieran. Nicholls stood on the basis that he wanted more directors on the board with livelihoods which depended on a milk cheque on the “20th of the month’’. “Unfortunately we haven’t seen the performance the last 12 months and we have seen a reduction in shareholder value and some of our investments haven’t come to fruition,’’ he said in the lead-up to the first election. The voting return was 64.10 per cent by milk solids, with 5324 votes cast from 9347 shareholders.

Peas aplenty for Christmas By Jaime PiTT-maCKay Jaime.p@Theguardian.co.nz
Despite one of the worst seasons in the time they have been growing, people will still be able to have freshly picked peas from the Plains Railway and Historical Museum. The pea paddock is located at the very end of the road that runs through the Plains site in Tinwald, and weather-dependent, people will be able to pick their own from
8am to midday, at the rate of $5 a bucket. Farm convenor John French said this season has been the worst in terms of rainfall, but that he was surprised how good the crop was, with the only concerns being around rot due to the wet. The group also have new potatoes for sale, available from beside the museum station and at Z service stations, with 5kg bags available for $10.

Christmas elderly wishes 2018
Ashburton Guardian
5
A heart of gold helps the elderly By HeatHer Mackenzie “This girl is gold.” That is how one of the senior Guardian staff members described 19-year-old Katelyn Hogg and her Christmas wishes granting frenzy. And the description is bang on the money. Katelyn has worked like some kind of possessed Christmas Wishes fairy over the past few weeks. Not happy with doing the odd window cleaning job here and there, then returning to renowned teenage pastimes like checking Snapchat or sifting about the place with her friends, she has been busy granting at least one wish a day and, sometimes, even more. Katelyn said getting involved with the elderly Christmas wishes was a no-brainer. “When I saw the request for Christmas wishes helpers in the Guardian, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to give back to the community,” she said. Since she was 11 Katelyn has been a member of the Ashburton swim team. She has travelled all over New Zealand competing at national level. In 2016 she received her Blues in swimming from Ashburton College. As with anything that requires trips away, Katelyn said the community has regularly helped the team to get around New Zealand and Christmas elderly wishes gave her the opportunity to give back. “Travelling to swimming meets is an expensive business and wouldn’t be possible without the generous sponsorship of local business, individuals and service groups. “So, it follows when I’m granting wishes for people, I know in my own small way I am giving back to those people.” She took last weekend off her wish-granting activities. You could be forgiven for thinking she was taking time out for herself to sleep in, but no, she was at the EA Networks Centre pool to

officiate at the 2018 SCWC Development Championships. Over the past 12 months or so swimming has taken a back seat in Katelyn’s life as she has been focusing on her career. “I always wanted to follow in Dad’s footsteps and train as a builder.” Unfortunately, this dream stalled when a building firm told her she was too small and not physically strong enough for the work. She was feeling a bit of a loss until a family friend suggested she try an electrical apprenticeship instead. “I wasn’t keen on the idea to begin with, but the more I thought about it the more I thought it could work for me,” she said. “Luckily, Mark and Jo Cartwright from Stewart and Holland believed in me enough to take me on as an electrical and refrigeration apprentice. “Within two days of working for them I fell in love with the job.
BLOCKED DRAINS
Dairy Saucer/Wedge/Sump and Drain Clearing.
Everybody I worked with was incredibly supportive. “Some of the customers were initially surprised when a girl turned up, but they soon got over that. I regularly received positive feedback on my work which made me love the job even more.” In 2017, after being with Stewart and Holland for a year, Katelyn handed in her notice and left the people she loved working for. It was a tough decision, but a personal battle with depression left her with no choice but to make some changes in her life. “At the end of last year, it threatened to overwhelm me, so I needed to take some time out and regroup as it were.” Katelyn has not completely severed her ties with Stewart and Holland though. “Mark has remained a mentor for me, his support has been an unwavering constant over the last few months. I cannot thank him enough for mentoring me professionally and mentally.”
Allen’s Ashburton offer a great service
Initially Katelyn thought granting Christmas wishes would help fill in time before she started her new electrical job with Morrison Agri working on new dairy-shed installs. “I needed to be doing something, sitting at home over-thinking everything is destructive. In my quest to pay forward the support I have received, something unexpected has happened – I feel and look (so people tell me) infinitely better. “Helping the elderly is brilliant. Some of them are real characters and they all have a story to tell. “I’ve met a huge variety of peo-
ple and made some new friends. Volunteer work is by definition unpaid, but actually you get paid more than money can ever buy. “I’m feeling very positive about the future and excited about starting my new job at the end of January.” As of the end of this week, Katelyn has undertaken and finished close to a dozen jobs on the Guardian elderly Christmas wishes list, from cleaning heat pumps and windows, to just general cleaning – helping many people in the leadup to the festive season and there’s every chance that this incredible young woman isn’t finished yet.

■ SHOP LOCAL
A sad Christmas made happier By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A Christmas that was set to be overshadowed by a year of ill family members has been made for one local woman after winning the Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Local competition. It has been a tough year for Kathryn Shaw, with a very ill daughter and a husband moving into dementia care, but the boost of $2500, won by shopping locally at Farmers, is set to help this festive season. Ashburton born and bred, Shaw is a regular to Farmers, but a bottle of champagne was the first thing on the shopping list. “I was in the supermarket last night and I was thinking a bottle of champagne would be nice for Christmas but I wasn’t able to afford it, so I’ll be off to buy one,” she said. “I’ve never been able to hold this much money in my hand, it has really been a tough year and this has absolutely made it, I’m amazed.” This is the third year the Guardian has run the competition, and for general manager Desme Daniels, being able to give back to the community is a massive thrill.

like this is exactly why we wanted to be part of it,” she said. “It is hard to be a part of local things being a large nationwide company, but to be part of this is great. “This time of year is always tough for staff and when I let them know what has happened I am sure they will be really happy.”
Ashburton’s Christmas market will be setting up business on Carters Terrace on Sunday. From 4pm the district’s traditional farmers’ market will take on a new guise, going festive and organiser Judith Crozier said the event will be a great opportunity for people to stock up on Christmas food direct from the grower or maker. “It’ll have a real fair atmosphere with craft and market stalls. We’ve got 35 stalls booked and ready to set up in the garden,” she said. All the traditional Christmas foods such as raspberries, new potatoes, turkeys, peas and carrots will be on sale as well as a range of Christmas desserts and cakes. There will also be an opportunity to buy last-minute gifts from a big range of craft stalls. Father Christmas will make a guest appearance at 5.30pm and the Ashburton Scottish Society Pipe Band will perform during the afternoon. “People can just roll up, bring their shopping bags and picnic chairs and just sit back and enjoy the fair,” Crozier said. For anyone wanting a snack, there will be a sausage sizzle, sausage rolls and coffee available. The Christmas Farmers’ Market will be held at 80 Carters Terrace from 4pm until 7pm on Sunday.

Heena’s passions – science, space and inspiring students Some people dream of travel that takes them to ancient sites or famous art galleries; Heena Shah dreamed of travel that would take her into space. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about a trip to one of America’s Space Camps, a trip that has inspired her to now take Ashburton students on that same voyage of discovery. Feet on the ground, eyes on the stars, Ashburton College teacher Heena Shah, inspired by a recent visit to an American Space Camp in Alabama.

S
pace might be dubbed the last frontier, but it’s a frontier Ashburton College teacher Heena Shah has always been keen to explore. For years she’s been fascinated by America’s space programme and for years she’s wanted to push her boundaries as a science teacher by taking part in a space camp, by eating, breathing and living the life of an astronaut. A science conference in April opened the door when she listened to an Australian science teacher
speaking. He talked about space camp and team he was taking later in the year. “He was absolutely inspiring. He talked about what he does in class, how he approaches science with his students and the excitement and enthusiasm of teaching students to think beyond the boundaries. I was so motivated just listening to him,” Heena said. The teacher was leading a team of Australian teachers and students to an American space camp later in the year. Heena wanted to be part of that team.
“I came home all excited. The fire had already ignited with I was teaching at Cashmere High in 2008 and 2009 and ever since then I’d been wanting to go. It’s been a long time.” Since then she’s never lost sight of her dream of attending a space camp, it was just the how that eluded her. Now she had an opportunity. While it was too late to have any of her college students included in the group, Heena managed to secure a place for herself on a camp based in Alabama. The camp was the main focus of
the trip, but in the days before they went behind the barriers into the camp, the group visited a range of science centres in Los Angeles and New York and made a stop-off at Microsoft headquarters. All of that was a dream for a science teacher, she said. The Microsoft tour gave the science team an opportunity to meet researchers and to find out how things worked behind the scenes. They also got to take control of the Microsoft robot. Those visits were great, but for the 10 teachers and 35 students,
space camp was the holy grail. “It didn’t matter that we didn’t know one another, we all shared the same passion. We were so likeminded, we never stopped talking,” she said. Space camp might have been just one week long, but it was a week where every minute was carefully programmed, none were wasted. The camp was functional, far from luxurious. The students and teaches stayed in habitats inside a fenced compound and from the moment they arrived they were straight down to business.

“Each group had its own leader and each group worked on several different programmes.” Those programmes included planning a mission to Mars, flying a shuttle, landing on an international space station and repairing a shuttle and returning to earth. “I had an opportunity to be the person in command on the ground, making sure everything ran as it should and in the next session I was an astronaut. It was extremely exciting to be in a space suit,” she said. The group also made a heat
shield, created a robot and a rocket. “It takes a different kind of mind to do this, to overcome the challenges and to design accordingly. We did a lot of learning in seven days,” she said. She also spent time in a centrifuge experiencing extreme G-forces and in a scuba tank experiencing zero gravity. All activities were carried out within the camp’s base building, but the atmosphere created was as close to the real thing as possible. The days were long, the flow of information relentless and the chal-
lenges extremely tough, but Heena described the week as sheer joy. “I felt as though I was living in another world.” Back at college, she’s now encouraging her science students to consider being part of next year’s team. And she’s already done the ground work. “I’ve spoken to the board of trustees and to the principal and they’ve agreed in principle if we want to run a trip for local students. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. I hope there are students who will take up this opportunity,” she said.
Space camp is not just for science students, it would also benefit kids with a love of maths or those interested in design, she said. “There is just so much they can learn. The tour is multi-faceted. I had the privilege to do this and now I want to open it up to the students too. It’s life-changing.” Heena trained as a teacher after coming to New Zealand from India. She taught at Cashmere High before coming to Ashburton and said a focus on space at that school inspired her dream. Students at her former school are
involved in the space camp programme. She’s passionate about science as a subject and says she wants to broaden the horizons of her students to think beyond the classroom, to think about one of the many fields of science as a career. If she can inspire one student a year to make their career in that field, she says she’ll count her teaching career as a success. As well as undertaking her own fundraising, Heena said she was well supported locally, particularly by the Ashburton Lions Club.

Putin talks nuclear threat Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a chilling warning about the rising threat of nuclear war, saying it could lead to “the destruction of civilisation as a whole and maybe even our planet”. Speaking at his annual news conference, Putin also scoffed at Western claims he wants to dominate the world, and says Western countries are antagonising Russia for their own domestic reasons, and at their own peril. He dismissed claims of Russian interference abroad, from a nerve agent poisoning in Britain to an alleged effort to infiltrate the US National Rifle Association. Pointing at the US intention to withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, Putin warned that if the US puts intermediate-range missiles in Europe, Russia will be forced to take countermeasures. “We are witnessing the breakup of the arms control system,” Putin said. US officials say the withdrawal from the INF was prompted by Russian violations

Putin noted that Western analysts are talking about the possibility of using low-yield nuclear weapons and said lowering the threshold could lead to “a global nuclear catastrophe”. He said Russia will have to ensure its security, and headed off arguments it was trying to gain unilateral advantages, saying the country was “trying to preserve the balance”.
Putin also emphasised that the US is pondering the use of ballistic missiles with conventional warheads, saying that the launch of such a missile could be mistaken for the launch of a nuclear-tipped one. “If that happens, it could lead to the destruction of civilisation as a whole and maybe even our planet,” he said. Putin said it’s the US, not Russia, that’s aspiring to dominate the world.
He pointed at US annual defence spending exceeding $US700 billion, comparing it with Russia’s military budget of $US46b. But the Russian president welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the US military from Syria, saying the country “has done the right thing”. Putin showed no sign of backing down from Russia’s stance on Ukraine, and accused his Ukrainian counterpart of provoking a naval stand-off with Russia to boost his electoral prospects. On the Russian economy, Putin hailed another year of growth after a previous period of stagnation. Russia’s gross domestic product is set to grow by 1.8 per cent this year, while industrial output has grown faster at 3 per cent, he said. The Russian president noted that the nation’s hard currency reserves have increased from $US432b at the start of the year to $US464b now. Putin pledged that the government will create incentives to speed up growth. – AP
Schumer pregnancy woes Amy Schumer’s pregnancy continues to be difficult. The comedienne shared a photo of herself sitting on a sofa while being hooked up to an IV drip. She indicated she is suffering from a severe form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum. “Am I glowing?,” she joked to her 7.6 million followers. Amy has been very open about her pregnancy difficulties, and last month she even had to cancel shows after being hospitalised in Texas with complications. Amy had announced on October 22 that she and her husband, Chris Fischer, were expecting.

US charges two over Chinese hacking plot The US has charged two Chinese nationals with conducting a massive state-sponsored cyber-theft targeting companies and government agencies in at least a dozen countries. The hackers gave China’s intelligence service access to intellectual property and other sensitive business information, Deputy Attorney Gener-

bers of a hacking group operating in China known as Advanced Persistent Threat 10 (APT10). They allegedly worked for a company that acted in association with the Chinese Ministry of State Security’s Tianjin State Security Bureau, the Justice Department said. – DPA

That’s my song? Miley Cyrus had a little trouble when she faced off against Jimmy Fallon in a new Name That Song challenge. The Wrecking Ball singer joined the TV host on the Tonight Show, and the pair went head-to-head trying to guess a random song as the show’s band The Roots cover a tune, playing it one instrument at a time and layering it together as it slowly becomes clearer. That song was Cyrus’ own 2009 hit single, Party in the USA, and yet it still took the 26-yearold songstress an embarrassingly long time to recognise the tune as The Roots covered it brilliantly.
Storms wreak Rome tourist coach havoc over Sydney ban causes protests
The bill for the “catastrophic” hail storm that struck Sydney and other parts of NSW is expected to be more than $A20 million with 15,000 people lodging claims so far. Multiple storm fronts converged on the Hunter Valley, Wollongong and Sydney on Thursday afternoon. Tennis ball-sized hailstones smashed into homes and cars in Sydney’s west while golf ball-sized stones battered the city’s inner suburbs. The Insurance Council of Australia declared the incident a catastrophe, triggering support for affected residents. Tens of thousands of homes were left without power and the full scope of the damage is not yet known. The ICA said on Friday
some 15,000 claims worth about $A18 million had been lodged as at 6.30pm Thursday and more were expected on yesterday. The council said there had been “extensive damage” to cars and homes from Sydney’s west to Bondi Beach. Windshields were smashed, roofs damaged and both cars and homes impacted by flash flooding. Endeavour Energy reported 20,000 homes and businesses in its network had been without power from the Blue Mountains, through Sydney’s west and up to the Hawkesbury. Around 200 electrical hazards were left in the wake of the storm after power lines came down. – AAP
Traffic in central Rome has been paralysed as tourist coach operators clogged up one of the city’s main squares in a protest against looming restrictions on their activities. More than 100 tourist coaches occupied Piazza Venezia, a roundabout hosting Rome’s Christmas tree which is near the Colosseum and the town hall on the Capitoline Hill. Because of the protest, the square was closed to regular traffic, causing major tailbacks. Coach operators are angry because Mayor Virginia Raggi has decided to ban nearly all tourist buses from downtown Rome starting from January 1. Large buses are an eyesore and add to congestion
in Rome’s historic centre. But industry representatives say restrictions will drive many operators out of business. “From January 1 many of us will be unemployed. We already had a 10-per-cent reduction in bookings,” Cinzia Renzi, head of trade association Assoviaggi Confesercenti, told Adnkronos news agency. According to the ANSA news agency, Raggi met a delegation of protesters and told them it was “unacceptable for Rome to be held hostage by tourist buses.” “The city centre must be immediately freed up, you must end your protest because you are paralysing the city,” the mayor said, standing by her decisions. – DPA
Grande releases new single Ariana Grande has teased details of her latest single, Imagine, describing the new track as “terrifyingly” personal in an exchange with fans on social media. She revealed that she’d sought inspiration from her personal life when working on new material, sharing an image of a draft tweet on her Instagram Stories. “A lot of this album mourns failed yet important, beautiful relationships in my life (as well as celebrates growth/exploring new independence)” she wrote. “But for those of you asking about imagine: I would say if ‘thank u, next’ = acceptance… ‘imagine’ = denial. Hope that makes sense”.

■ CONSUMER CONFIDENCE
In brief
Shoppers spend up to sit a bit above historically average levels. The proportion thinking it is a good time to buy a major household item bodes well for spending in the lead-in to Christmas,” said ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner. She noted, however, ANZ’s composite confidence gauge – which combines business expectations with overall consumer sentiment to capture both the demand and supply side of the economy – “continues to suggest momentum in the economy is set to slow.” Business confidence improved from a low base in December, having soured towards the end of last year on political uncertainty when the new Labour-led government took office. A net 24.1 per cent of firms surveyed in the ANZ business outlook survey for December expect general business conditions to deteriorate in the coming 12 months, versus 37.1 per cent in November. - NZME
Moa buys Savor NZX-listed brewer Moa is buying one of New Zealand’s largest bar and restaurant businesses – Savor – in a cash and share deal worth $13 million. Moa said the move would almost triple its revenue and take the group into sustainable profitability. The company said one of its key strategies was to ensure its brand could successfully access valuable on-premise venues across New Zealand. Savor Group is an Auckland-based hospitality venture with a collection of bars and restaurants such as Ostro, Seafarers, Ebisu, Azabu, Fukuko and Las Vegas. - NZME

Peak period speeds were only marginally slower. Fibre download speeds exceeded 240Mbps, compared with less than 10Mbps for ADSL and just over 40Mbps for VDSL. The results showed that about 22 per cent of users were experiencing download speeds of close to 100Mbps, while more than 25 per cent had speeds of 10Mbps or less. More than half of test users fell within that range. Less than 4 per cent of users tested achieved speeds of more than 880Mbps. Within New Zealand, average latency – the time it took a packet of test data to reach a remote server and return to the user’s device – was about 25 milliseconds for fibre, 40ms for VDSL and more than 60ms for ADSL. The survey noted that while large-scale providers like Google and Facebook were likely to host content in New Zealand, many other gaming or website providers would be based overseas, increasing that response time. While that latency was less than 50ms to a server in Sydney, it jumped close to 150ms to one in San Francisco. South Africa – at more than 450ms – was more than expected, and was possibly due to traffic taking an indirect route, according to the survey report. “These latency results are approximately what you would expect given New Zealand’s remoteness from these measurement locations.” - NZME

Fibre ‘not yet at peak’ Residential fibre broadband services appear to be delivering less than 75 per cent of their maximum available speeds, based on the first findings from the Commerce Commission’s monitoring programme. The results, from an October test of 758 households, showed average peak-time speeds for fibre were 71 per cent of the maximum available, rising to 83 per cent for VDSL. Peak-time ADSL speeds were just below 80 per cent of maximum and 24-hour performance was little different across all technologies. While that performance was less than the Commerce Commission had expected, the regulator noted the performance on popular 100-megabit fibre plans was typically about 85 per cent of maximum. “The big finding from this report is that while fibre broadband is delivering much faster speeds than copper-based services, it is not yet performing at its peak,” Telecommunications Commissioner Stephen Gale said. “This is especially the case for the highest speed fibre services, which consumers pay a premium price for.” More than 1.3 million homes and business are able to connect to ultrafast broadband as a result of the $1.7 billion roll-out the Crown has funded since 2010. The programme is about 77 per cent through and earlier this month the government announced another $130 million of funding to add another 10,000 rural homes, 59 tourism areas and 365 kilometres of state highway to the coverage. That will take coverage to 99.8 per cent of the population. The Commerce Commission started its Measuring Broadband New Zealand initiative to provide independent information on performance of different plans and technologies so that consumers could buy services based on both cost and service. The survey draws on data gathered using SamKnows Whiteboxes installed in participants’ homes. They connect to a homeowner’s router and run regular tests when families are not using the internet. The October data showed download speeds across all plans and technologies averaged about 160 megabits per second, with upload speeds at about 90Mbps.
Sky TV says it paid “in excess of $200 million” to secure satellite capacity for the next 10 years through Optus. Under the deal, Optus will provide Sky with satellite capacity to 2031. The current contract ex-pires in 2021. The satellite spend-up is guaranteed to draw snarks on social media at a time when more and more people are streaming video via the internet. But Sky chief financial officer Jason Hollingworth says only satellite coverage can guarantee content, “particularly live sport, can be reliably delivered to 100 per cent of New Zealand.” - NZME

Consumer confidence made a comeback in December, with a growing appetite to spend in the run-up to Christmas. The ANZ-Roy Morgan headline index of consumer confidence lifted 3 points to 121.9 points in the latest month – a reading of 100 means pessimistic and optimistic consumers are balanced. Within that index, the current conditions index lifted 3 points to 123.6 while the future conditions index rose 4 points to 120.8. A net 36 per cent of consumers think now is a good time to buy a major household item, up 4 percentage points from last month. Perceptions regarding the next year’s economic outlook lifted 7 percentage points to a net 14 per cent – was the highest level since March. The five-year outlook remained steady at a net 18 per cent. “Consumers are feeling pretty good as Christmas approaches, with confidence lifting again

OUR VIEW
Thank you for caring this Christmas
W
hen the call goes out each year for volunteers to help us grant some elderly Christmas wishes among the community, the response is always remarkable. This year has been no exception. However, there has been a notable change in 2018. A good one. One which we never expected. A young local lady has put her hand up and taken everyone to task as she has busied herself for the best part of two weeks, working around the Ashburton township granting wishes expressed to the Guardian. And she’s done so with an incredible level of gusto and no
expectation of recognition or reward. But, that’s just Katelyn Hogg. This incredible teenager has thrown herself behind the cause and has completed a huge number of wishes over the past few weeks – helping make things just that little bit easier for a huge number of people leading into the Christmas period – and
we’re eternally grateful. That a 19-year-old would be the first person to put their hand up and say “throw jobs at me”, – daily – has been quite incredible for us here at the Guardian to watch unfold. It’s not something you normally see from someone of that age, especially around these parts. The world needs more Katelyns, more people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in without expecting anything in return. She is a true local hero and the Guardian team are indebted to her for her work over the past few weeks. Christmas wishes for the elderly for us has always been
about the people. We want to be able to make this time of the year a little easier for those out in our community who might need a helping hand but are too shy to ask for it. Being able to see the joy on people’s faces as a team of people arrive to give the garden a makeover, clean their windows or even just drop off some fresh home baking is all anyone should want in terms of some Christmas cheer. But we can’t do it without our community. We rely on people to help get these wishes granted and are so lucky that people are generally quick to put their hands up to do the odd job here and there
when they can. It’s always incredible to see community spirit alive and well and the readiness from those around the district to help those who perhaps are a little bit more vulnerable. We don’t intend on stopping doing the elderly Christmas wishes either and as long as there are people out there who need the odd job done leading into the festive season and the people, especially those like the wonderful Katelyn, who are willing to help, we’ll continue to bring them each and every year. Because, who doesn’t like something that is both feel good and inspiring at this time of the year?

Exiting 2018 T
wo thousand and eighteen is fast fading, as years tend to towards the end of December. In the political firmament, this period, over the summer parliamentary break, is known, almost officially, as the silly season. Some cynics – and even those more favourably disposed towards the antics of our parliamentary representatives – argue the silly season covers far more of the political cycle than a mere few weeks over Christmas. Much of the deliberating that goes on in the House during the rest of the year, they say, can comfortably be classed as silly. And, to be perfectly honest, one would often have to agree with them. If ‘silly’ suggests trivial party exchanges of little significance to the nation as a whole, then 2018 is up there with many of the twelve month periods that have gone before. For instance, one has to wonder about Bridges’ public obsession with naming and, presumably, shaming, the leaker of his expense account covering his grand, some say, luxurious, getting-to-know him tour of the nation, after, somewhat surprisingly, being selected to lead the National Party on its would-be triumphant return to the Treasury benches in 2020. This worm in the woodwork came to dominate Bridge’s every waking moment, thereby ensuring it would acquire maximum media coverage, and, that after all, is the role of the often-vilified ladies and gentlemen of the press, to the point where very little significant comment

EYE ON POLITICS
Bridges might, and should, have made regarding affairs of state, was heard in the Chamber. “Who is the creep who ratted on me?” or words to that effect will be what we remember as the cause that dominated the opposition leader in 2018. What’s more, in the process, he accused his colleague, JamiLee Ross, as being the culprit. The ramifications of that accusation led to furious claim and counter-claim, all of which is now history. All the above has to be seen as basically ‘silly’ and in no way restricted to the notorious silly season. A possibly, marginally, lesser degree of silliness but ‘silly’ none-the-less can also be detected in the handling, by the minister concerned, Iain Lees-Galloway, of the Karel Soubrek case, to whom Lees-Galloway granted permanent residence in New Zealand, despite the gentleman in question being a convicted drug smuggler currently doing time in a New Zealand prison. It turned out, in the face of a maelstrom of angry reaction, that the minister had read only a brief summary of the evidence, thus arriving at his wildly unpopular decision on seriously inadequate research.
Since then various excuses have been found for his totally inadequate approach to the case, leading to the PM’s surprising decision not to sack him, with immediate effect. All-in-all, that was undoubtedly a silly sequence, but perhaps, in the end, more a dereliction of duty. There is too, usually silliness in the air whenever the Speaker makes a judgement or comment on the supposedly unparliamentary pronouncements or utterances of his fellow MPs. That that august position is these days held by a notorious poacher turned, very late in life, into a still-unpredictable gamekeeper Trevor Mallard, makes one question his every intervention, some of which would certainly qualify for the silliness label. His tit-for-tat confrontations with several of his former sparring partners make for interesting diversions but add little to the business of the House. On the distinctly non-silly front, our articulate, charming young mother and Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, rules supreme. How fortunate the Labour Party, and the creaky coalition she leads, are to have her. It’s hard to see National producing a candidate with whom to dethrone her in less than two years. Though National still enjoys majority support in the latest poll, they have no potential leader to hold a candle to Jacinda. Thus, the eccentricities of MMP remain embedded in our system whereby a coalition of
two weak parties out of three is sufficient to hold office over another that has held a clear majority of support from the very day of the last election. Bridges struggles on, now and then forgetting his relentless search for Jack-the-Leaker but his inspiration level and voting appeal are still only lowly rated. Judith Collins may well overthrow him before 2019 is out. Perhaps National has a Jacinda look-and-sounda-like waiting in the wings all set to make her debut as eighteen morphs into nineteen, but without such a person National’s 2020 hopes may amount only to wishful thinking rather than reality. So there it is! Now Christmas looms, with twenty nineteen emerging from the shadows just behind. What will replace the shadows? Regretfully I am not in a position to enlighten you. My crystal ball has, sadly, reached its useby-date. The Trump factor remains an overhanging and threatening feature of any attempt to unravel the future. We must hope earnestly the American democracy will defeat his would-be dictatorship. Before all that, let me wish you all a great Christmas and the happiest of New Years. ■ RUGBY
Glenn back to where it all began BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury’s new Heartland Championship rugby coaching line-up for 2019 has been named, and it features a man who led Mid Canterbury through two of their most successful campaigns in recent seasons. Well-regarded and successful international-level rugby coach Glenn Moore had been appointed to a newly created position of director of rugby for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union. A key part of that role would be helping to coach Mid Canterbury in the 2019 Heartland Championship, along with Dale Palmer and Jason Rickard, who were assistant coaches of this year’s squad. Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) chief executive Ian Patterson said a new part-time role had been created following a review of the 2018 season, which identified the need to develop a more integrated player and coach development pathway which provided ongoing support and mentoring to coaches and players. That role would be taken on by Moore, who was also the current Black Ferns coach. “We are very pleased to have secured the services of Glenn, he will be a huge asset to the union,” Patterson said. “His skill set will significantly strengthen the union’s local coach development pathway and Glenn brings his outstanding leadership, knowledge and experience to our Heartland campaign.” Moore said his primary role would be developing and supporting both coaches and players. “I see it as an opportunity to help. “I’m back living in the area so to be able to put something back into the community and the grassroots part of the game is a good thing,” Moore said. The 2018 season was one of Mid Canterbury’s worst in recent seasons, only making the Lochore Cup (fifth to eighth) play-offs after a player eligibility rule breach by the West Coast saw them deducted points and drop to ninth on the table, propelling Mid Canterbury to eighth. They lost their Lochore Cup semi-final to Horowhenua-Kapiti. Moore coached the Hammers to consecutive Meads Cup (top four) wins in 2013 and 2014.
“It was just a good period. “The time was right and we had a committed group and a fresh-look coaching staff, and a good group of players who were really focused and wanted to achieve,” Moore said. From there Moore took up an assistant coach role with the Blues Super Rugby franchise, and then coached the national Black Ferns women’s side to a win at the 2017 Rugby World Cup. The team then became the first ever women’s team to be named World Rugby Team of the Year in 2017. Prior to his time with Mid Canterbury back in 2013 and 2014, Moore coached North Otago, Otago and the Highlanders, and Patterson said he brought a wealth of knowledge to his new role and was keen to contribute to the development of coaches and players within the Mid Canterbury region. In his new role, Moore would lead the preparation of the Mid Canterbury Heartland Championship side and assist in the development of the MCRU’s performance pathway and coaches. That pathway included under-18 to senior representative squads. Moore moved back to Ashburton earlier this year to take up the position of general manager at the Smallbones dealership in Tinwald, commuting for his role with the Black Ferns. His contract to coach the Black Ferns goes through to the end of 2019.

In brief Fransen in NZ squad The rising stars of the New Zealand Sevens scene will assemble in Tauranga in January with their sights set on the 2019 All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens Development teams, and that squad includes Mid Canterbury player Dan Fransen. Numerous domestic sevens tournaments, including the inaugural Red Bull Ignite7 and last weekend’s TECT National Sevens, have uncovered 51 players that will take part in two trials in January.
Why ABs won’t win Cup The major difference between the All Blacks heading into next year’s World Cup and the triumphant teams in 2011 and 2015 is that Kieran Read’s troops have lost a crucial string to their bow – the fear factor. That’s the warning from Ireland winger Jacob Stockdale in the lead-up to the tournament in Japan. Though the All Blacks “are still the side to beat”, Ireland’s victory in Dublin last month exposed cracks in their game, Stockdale said. The 22-year-old finisher scored the only try in the 16-9 win – a sublime kick-andchase effort after trapping fullback Damian McKenzie out of position. And, yes, the Irish already have one eye on the Webb Ellis trophy nine months out from the showpiece event. - NZME Emily Milner gets some ski practice in at the water skiing school held at Lake Hood over the past two weeks. Skiers hone skills By Jaime Pitt-macKay

Poor weather did not dampen the spirits of young water skiers who were using the school holidays to head to ski school. About 17 students aged from six to 16 have been hitting the waters of Lake Hood to either brush up on their skiing skills, or start from scratch. The school, which is organised by the Donaldson family, has been up and running for ten years and has grown year-byyear, said one of the organisers, Rachel Donaldson.
“We have everything down here with boats and skis so we can provide everything,” she said. “We have had experienced people but also people that have never stood up before and they are on to one ski by the end of it so that is cool. “It is flexible as well so if people wanted to come for all the days they could, or if the just wanted to pop down for one.” The wet weather of December has played havoc on the school’s running over the past two weeks, limiting it to only three days of operation this week and a couple last week.

■ BASKETBALL
Camp a stepping stone Two young Mid Canterbury basketballers are among 160 from around the country who have been selected to attend a Basketball New Zealand Under-14 camp next year. Eva Kelly and Sonny McMillan have continued Basketball Mid Canterbury’s rich recent history when it comes to having youngsters making national age group camps and squads, and both were excited by the opportunity ahead of them. Kelly’s selection followed a strong showing at an under-13 regional tournament held in Nelson in October, where she captained the Mid Canterbury Under-13 team, and came just four years after she first took up the sport.
She started off playing miniball and admitted she didn’t really enjoy it in the early days, but that had changed. “I like everything about it now, I just didn’t like it for a start,” Kelly said. For the past two years the Hinds youngster had represented Mid Canterbury and she now had big dreams of going far with basketball, and the Hinds and District Lions Club had given her sponsorship to enable her to chase those dreams. Basketball New Zealand under-14 camp director Dave MacKay said it was a great camp to be involved with and the kids would have fun, learn a lot and get some great tips on how they can learn to develop their game.
The 2019 instalment of the camp would be the third time it had run. “It is a critical age group to develop and over the three days the young athletes will really get a well-rounded experience in basketball and athlete development, on and off the court,” McKay said. “It is exciting to have over 50 staff involved over the camp not only helping to develop the players but also develop themselves.” The under-14 camp is the starting point to the National Talent Programme and was set up to assist in the building of the depth and quality of athletes coming through the Basketball New Zealand player pathway, with a
view to the future of the national teams programme which begins at under 16 level. The under-14 camp will take place in the April school holidays and include coaches from all over New Zealand, with the camp environment exposing the athletes to the challenge of learning, adapting and understanding the standards of higher-level basketball. The programme is based on developing the key fundamental skills required at this age and stage in line with the requirements of the national style of play. On court testing and off court seminars would ensure the athletes received a well-rounded learning experience.

Pogba to start with a clean slate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised World Cup winner Paul Pogba and the rest of his team-mates they will get a chance to prove their worth to Manchester United once again as he starts afresh at Old Trafford. Pogba, an STG89 million signing from Juventus, started only one of Mourinho’s last four games in charge and has looked a shadow of the player who played such a key role in France’s triumph in Russia this summer, and he will be one of those hoping to show
he can rediscover his best form. Speaking to MUTV, Solskjaer said: “Everyone in the squad knows that ‘I’ve got a chance now’ because whatever has gone, whatever has happened has happened. Now it’s just about from here. “Everyone starts with a clean slate and we want players to perform, and we’ll give them the chance.
“We have got 23, 24 players, they’re all quality and they’ll all get a chance now. With the amount of games coming up, they have got a chance to show that they are Man United players.” Solskjaer wrote himself into history in 1999 when his injury-time goal against Bayern completed a remarkable Champions League final comeback. - PA
Midfielder Mandi has found his second wind and is adding some serious puff to the rejuvenated Wellington Phoenix. Two months after arriving in the A-League with a grimace-inducing fitness level, the Spaniard has caught up to his teammates and allowed coach Mark Rudan to transform their game plan. ■ WINX
Waller outlines plans for Winx Trainer Chris Waller has cautiously confirmed plans for Winx to race in the autumn but says if she shows any sign she is not at her best, she will be immediately retired. All going well, the champion will follow the same path as previous years beginning with the Group Two Apollo Stakes followed by three Group One races, the Chipping Norton, George Ryder and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Waller says if she does well in her preparation for a return, her campaign will then be assessed race by race.
M7
sumed she will be there, it will be a race by race assessment, especially over the past two seasons when deciding whether to go towards a third Cox Plate, a second Queen Elizabeth or even a fourth Cox Plate as it was in her last start. “For her to be still racing whilst remaining in such good health is a credit to the owners, Hugh Bowman and other riders that have ridden her and most importantly the staff at Chris Waller Racing who continue to keep her safe and have enabled her to be appreciated in the manner that she is.” - AAP

The trainer said the decision to race on had been made after discussions with the owners – Peter Tighe, Debbie Kepitis and Richard Treweeke – and jockey Hugh Bowman. “She has nothing left to prove to us or her many followers and we are under no illusion that she is getting a little older, however she is in excellent condition both physically and mentally and had she not pleased us in any area of her wellbeing or mental state she would have been retired immediately,” Waller said yesterday.

Alta Maestro overdue a winning run By Matt MarkhaM
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
There would arguably be no more fitting winner of Sunday’s 2018 edition of the Canstaff Ashburton Cup than Alta Maestro. The Robert Dunn trained speed merchant, who will be driven tomorrow by son John, is owned by local identities Stu and Liz Leadley.

back another day for this year’s instalment with the Sunday element expected to draw a decent sized crowd along to enjoy the action. The club are seeking gold coin donations on entry with all funds raised going to the local branch of the Cancer Society. As well as Alta Maestro there is a number of locally owned, trained and driven horses who will ap-
pear throughout the 11-race programme which gets under way at 12.27pm. One of the stronger local chances of the day appears to be Queen Bee Bardon who lines up in a strong mares race for Ben Waldron alongside Tact Maggie, who is currently being looked after by local trainer, Laurence Hanrahan.

But for those Kiwis living day-to-day just trying to make ends meet, Christmas is a time of stress and sadness. Their Christmas wishes are more basic and urgent in nature—a place to sleep for the night, a way to pay the bills piling up or just how to feed their family each night.

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker
Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re energised by human interaction. You forget that sometimes because life in public is rife with lines, traffic, constant negotiations over minor territorial issues... bottom line, it’s worth it. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When you can see the best and worst in a thing and love the whole range, that’s a good relationship. You have it with yourself, and with your closest people, this is peace. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): In many ways, you feel you’re in the middle of nowhere, distant from the main action, away from what you’re meant to be doing. But the important thing is you’re not lost. You’ll get back on track tomorrow. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Reward systems will work particularly well today. Whether you’re dealing with yourself or others, the rules are the same, for every right move, give a treat. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Simple measures keep you organised, for instance a hook for your keys or keeping your wallet in the same place every time. It bears repeating. Keep close tabs on personal items this afternoon. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The calm before the storm is an exciting, anticipatory moment in weather, and in relationships, but only those who have been through a storm are keen enough to recognise the moment. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What’s needed is a fresh take on things. Build on what’s been established, and then put a twist in it. This will work with recipes, small talk, projects, and almost anything you encounter today. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Feel like you’re trying to impress someone? Good noticing, and you should stop yourself before you go too far with this. What’s most impressive, of course, is someone who doesn’t need to. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The truth is an excellent starting place. If someone is treating the truth like it’s the plan B or C – the stunt to pull when all else fails – that should be a major warning sign. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It’s said that persistence wins out, but much depends on the what’s being persisted. Of course repetitive action will eventually make progress, but is it working? Is it smart? AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The framing of things has impact on their appreciation and understanding. This will be true of art and more true of your view of people and interpersonal dynamics of the day. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Consider taking the same people to a new environment. You’ll see another side, learn of hidden strengths and have fun in a way you wouldn’t have in your typical setting.
