The salmon start biting early

during the salmon fishing season after witnessing some incredible action on the Rakaia River last week.

The pacific salmon are biting in the Rakaia River, much earlier than normal.

And given the fact that Fish & Game are on track to issue more than 10,000 salmon endorsements to those keen to test their skills over the summer months, it might be a good thing.

Fish & Game officers Richard Cosgrove and Harry Graham-Samson were left surprised and excited at what lies ahead

The pair were filming a howto video on salmon fishing alongside keen anglers Bryce Marshall and Simon McMillan and witnessed a salmon run far earlier than normal not too far upstream of the Rakaia River mouth.

They were then on hand to capture the action as McMillan and Marshall drew in four fish in quick succession.

“Looking at the time stamps on the film as we were recording, it was an hour and half and four salmon were caught,” Cosgrove said.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, both in terms of salmon coming in on the line and at this time of the season.

“Traditionally, it’s not usually until January and February when we see so much action – but around the region at the moment there’s been fish being caught quite frequently.

“Following the day we were there, I know that there were even more fish caught which is a really encouraging sign for the season ahead.”

Rules and regulations require anglers to keep a salmon harvest card and that they’re only allowed to keep two sea-run salmon within a season.

That’s to ensure a healthy

number of salmon reach their way up to the spawning grounds and has caused a shift in mindset for many anglers who are now a lot more selective in what they keep and what they release.

Three of the salmon caught last week were released and one was kept.

Cosgrove said good reports were coming in from the Rangitata River as well, with fish being caught there following the opening of the season last week and also on the Waimakariri which is usually a lot later starting in the season as well.

“It bodes well for a good salmon fishing season and the numbers we are seeing in terms of salmon endorsements would

suggest that people are on to the job this year.

“Last season we issued 9438 endorsements across the country which allow access to the Central South Island and North Canterbury areas.

“As of last Friday, we had issued 9300 for this season already – generally it’s not until January when we start to see them really come through, so you would like to think we won’t have any problem in reaching 10,000 endorsements this season.”

The main salmon fishing season in New Zealand runs from January through to mid-April with the Rakaia traditionally peaking during February and March.

Candidate claims she was racially abused

Sapphire left with ‘sour taste in her mouth’

Shfire Sapphire has a “sour taste in her mouth” about Ashburton after receiving a barrage of racist comments during the local body election campaign.

Sapphire (Whakatōhea) is originally from Opotiki and proudly wears a moko based on her great-grandmother’s moko, but said because of it she was subjected to racial abuse during the campaign.

“I had people saying ‘get that scribble off your face’,” Sapphire said.

“Every day I had to delete comments about my moko and being part-Maori.

“I’m left with a sour taste in my mouth as I’ve never received such racist comments in all my life.

“I’m not going to let it get me down or drag me down, I just carry on.”

She also said it was appalling that at the meet-the-candidates’ event, some candidates had spoken about having te reo being forced down their throats.

“These people are meant to represent the community, I am part of the community and other Maori are part of that community so do they not want to represent us?”

Despite the racist abuse, she intends to stand for council again in the future.

“Nothing scares me off, I’ll go

for council over and over and over again wherever I will be living at the time.”

Sapphire spent the most on the election campaign out of all the candidates, declaring expenses totalling $7195 on her unsuccessful campaign for a seat on the Ashburton District Council and the Braided Rivers Community Trust.

Sapphire, along with all the other candidates, had no donations to declare.

Despite having the highest campaign spend, Sapphire ended up with the fewest number of votes, 483, in the Ashburton Ward behind Janet Glassey who pulled out of the election a month be-

fore the voting closed.

For the Braided Rivers Community Trust Sapphire was also the lowest-polling candidate.

In comparison, first-term councillor Phill Hooper declared he didn’t spend a dollar on his campaign and received 4259 votes to rank fourth in the Ashburton Ward.

The top polling candidate in the Ashburton Ward was Carolyn Cameron with 4610 votes and she declared $3865.87 of expenses.

Cameron was followed by Leen Braam who spent $787.75 and the third highest polling candidate was Tony Todd who spent $1568.03.

Russell Ellis was successfully

re-elected after missing the previous term and declared expenses of $4028.75.

Incumbent Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown spent $787.75, all on print advertising, on his successful re-election campaign.

For his mayoral bid, Jeff Swindley spent $2218.11, with $1200 on bookings at the St Andrew’s Church for his job interview sessions.

Brown comfortably won the mayoral race, receiving 10,136 votes to Swindley’s 1309.

Couple lift their game at champs

Cover story

An Ashburton couple live and breathe all things powerlifting.

They’re Steve and Tania Lousich, and between them have over 60 years’ experience in the sport.

Steve has 40 years in the sport, while Tania has 23 years under her belt.

“We love it (powerlifting),” Tania said.

“It’s a big part of who we are.”

Their most recent success came at the Oceania Powerlifting Championships in Melbourne.

Steve, aged 57, achieved a squat of 265kg, a bench-press of 181kg, and a deadlift of 220kg. All up, he clocked a total of 666kg which earned him 1st in his age category and 2nd in open overall (all ages).

Tania, aged 51, got a bench total of 66kg which was an Oceania and world record for her class, she was also awarded 1st in her weight class and 2nd overall.

Steve and Tania regularly came across each other at powerlifting competitions around New Zealand and across the world and recently celebrated their one year wedding anniversary.

“We had a very long friendship and eventually we decided to get married,” Tania said.

As well as bringing the two together, powerlifting has taken them around the world for competitions through the years.

“We have been to some pretty strange places that wouldn’t be on the tourist map,” Steve said.

The countries included Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Ukraine and many other places.

“The competitions are often not held in the main centres but in small little villages where the organisers live,” Tania said.

“It would be like going to Ashburton for a competition instead of Auckland.”

While Steve has many titles and records under his belt one of the more unique things he has done is set a Guinness World Record in 2009 which he held for a period of time.

The record was for the most bench presses of a person in under a minute. The bench which Steve used was specially de-

signed to lift the woman, which combined totalled 105.28kg. Steve beat the then standing record with a total of 121 bench presses of the woman.

“It was really hard to do that many in such a short time period, once we finished my arms were like jelly,” Steve said.

Beyond lifting both are referees on the global stage and Steve coaches other powerlifters as well. This is something that they both want to carry on if they ever hang up the weights.

“Our focus is still on competing now, but it is also about nurturing the next group of young powerlifters,” Tania said.

“Someone had to teach us, and now we have that knowledge we should pass it on.”

WASTEBUSTERS

Council pitched ‘environmental’ opportunity

need to go through the budget process.

A report will be presented to the council to consider the purchase of the machine next year.

Wastebusters is offering to sell its polystyrene processing machine to the Ashburton District Council.

Wastebusters owner Brent McLaren said it as an “environmental venture” more than a financial opportunity for the council to purchase the machine and add to its services at the refuse station.

The machine can compresses 90 cubic metres of polystyrene down into a 0.7m3 cube that weighs 50kg.

McLaren estimates, based on what Wastebusters receives, that there is at least 3000m3 per year of polystyrene collected in Ashburton – but that is without knowing how much ends up in landfill, he said.

Adding the machine to the council’s refuse station will keep polystyrene out of the landfill, and would fit in with the council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan it adopted in July.

The council is interested in considering purchasing the machine but Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said any decision would

The reason the machine is for sale is for financial reasons, McLaren said, as with Environment Canterbury shutting down its green waste operation over resource consent issues the business has lost $130,000 of its annual income.

“We have lost basically a third of our income.”

They have picked up some farm plastics recycling work, McLaren said, but Wastebusters will no longer need the yard they lease long term.

That means he will no longer have a place to house the polystyrene machine, and being a proud Ashburtonian, McLaren would rather see its services and the environmental benefits remain local.

Feeling left out on Crate Day

You may or may not have heard of Crate Day.

Certainly, if you have young adults in your family, you’ve heard of Crate Day. It was launched by The Rock radio station in 2009 as a publicity stunt, encouraging Kiwis to drink a crate of 12 beer bottles from midday until 12am the next day. And it really grabbed a hold of New Zealand’s young, becoming known as an “unofficial holiday”.

It heralded in the first day of summer, taking place on the first Saturday in December each year.

The younger Kiwi gens have fallen in love with it and made it almost pilgrimage status.

It’s an excuse every year to act and dress up like a total knob, binge drink to an extreme and, it seems, do some pretty dangerous stuff. It’s also causing concern amongst some, who say it’s reinforcing and encouraging

New Zealand’s binge drinking culture.

Yep, for sure it is, and, according to Newshub, alcohol expert, Professor Doug Sellman, it’s a “drunken drongo day” and that maybe The Rock radio station should be picking up the tab for all the harm that will occur.

He says that those who partake in Crate Day could be drinking “literally a lethal dose of alcohol”.

I understand that and I would never want to encourage that kind of binge drinking in young people.

But you know what really grinds my gears about it? I was

hearing all the young peeps talk about their costumes and all sorts of things surrounding the day and it actually made me excited and I wanted to dive back into my youth.

I’m not much of a drinker, but I’m not adverse to being a drunken drongo for one day a year.

But not one of those early 20s twats invited me to Crate Day and I definitely feel sore about it. It’s like I’m missing out and unpopular, and that’s not a thing.

There’s something about it that brings out the teenage rebel in me. Maybe it’s the excitement that abounds beforehand. Oh well, it’s their loss. I’m cooler than them anyway.

One younger person, who shall not be named (but before she got Covid, he slept in a bed beside

my daughter) proclaimed it the best day of his life and thinks it should take over from Christmas. Just as well he gets two crate bottles in and then gives up.

So, next Crate Day, I’ll be hosting my own event. It shall be called Geriatric Guzzling Day and we shall party like it’s 1999 (oh wait, I was pregnant that year. Make it 1996).

No-one under the age of 40 will be allowed and I will prewarn my neighbours about the noise level.

So, take that you early-20s elitist meanies. It will be the best Crate Day ever.

Now, I know there are some agencies possibly getting ready to send in official complaints about encouraging binge drinking. But I assure you, I’m

not encouraging any such thing. No, no, no. I won’t be going near beer, I’ll be drinking a crate of strawberry daiquiris, plus there will be a cheese platter there.

Don’t judge me, I just want to play on “drunken drongo day” at least once in my lifetime but in a style that suits me.

Editor’s note: Geriatric Guzzling Day would be dangerous territory for most and it’s not something the Guardian would ever support.

Fortunately, I am led to believe that Lisa has always adopted a mature response when drinking. She now understands it takes her only one drink to turn into a drunken drongo.

The trouble is, she still can’t remember if it’s the 13th or the 14th drink.

Lumina Lamb takes centre stage

country farm.

Harper manages Quartz Hill Station and is amongst 50 South Island runholders who farm Lumina Lamb for Headwaters.

“We are proud that we are doing something different and that as part of that, we are also making a difference,” Harper said.

Especially proud because Lumina Lamb had wowed judges at the prestigious Villeroy & Boch Culinary World Cup competition.

Thirty national teams competed for five days at the event in Luxembourg from November 26–30.

A dish featuring the New Zealand lamb propelled Singapore’s National Culinary Team to a silver medal in this, one of the largest and best-known cooking

competitions in the world.

The dish was herb-roasted Lumina Lamb loin, braised Lumina Lamb shoulder croquette, morel with nduja sausage stuffing, confit potato, truffle and onion tartlet, puree of carrot and madeira jus.

“Hearing from those chefs what they loved about Lumina gave me goosebumps, and seeing Lumina Lamb on a menu, knowing it comes from this small group of farms here in New Zealand means a lot,” Harper said.

He said Headwaters, was “like a big family”.

“At Headwaters we are all like-minded, we want to produce the world’s best lamb and do it in the right way.

“We are not just putting our lambs on a truck at the farm gate – we remain connected to the end product and want to make it the best.”

Lumina Lambs were born and raised in the New Zealand hill country. Through rigorous standards and processes, they were 100 per cent natural, free range, grass-fed and finished on a cultivated chicory herb pasture.

The meat itself was finely marbled with high levels of naturally occurring Omega-3 polyunsaturated fats.

It had a mild aroma, light pink to pale red colour and a lighter-bodied texture.

Headwaters was established in 2006 to breed ewes with high levels of fat to do well in the high country.

There were now about 250,000 of these ewes in the high country.

The breeding programme has resulted in top-performing animals that produce lambs with strong growth rates and fat constitution.

Don’t forget to keep NAIT up to date

registering animals after they have been tagged, but I think there is some belief that this starts and finishes with the person who has animals born on farm.

In the wake of the recent outbreaks of M. bovis in Mid Canterbury, Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) is asking farmers to keep up their National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) compliance to help with the eradication process.

Farmers who don’t keep NAIT records put others in harm’s way and this won’t help in eradicating the disease, says M. bovis programme director Simon Andrew.

“In our tracing work, we have found some really poor NAIT practices, which is disappointing,” Andrew said.

MPI’s national manager of Animal Welfare and NAIT Compliance, Gray Harrison, said while NAIT use had improved, more work needed to be done.

“There has been an up with

“Every person who has NAIT animals on their farm, that weren’t born there, must make sure they are tagged, registered, and have had their movement recorded into the NAIT system,” said Harrison.

Not doing this could make you liable for prosecution. This could result in a hefty fine. Be warned.

“We’ve had some serious cases before the court this year including a Northland farmer fined $18,000 for not registering 496 cattle. There have been hundreds of unregistered animals – that’s meant thousands of dollars in fines.

“The fallout might seem out there, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what it would cost New Zealand if this disease – M. bovis or something else – got to grips in this country.”

Andrew said incomplete NAIT records meant farms were placed

under movement controls, which mightn’t have happened if animals were properly accounted for under the NAIT system.

Farmers should know that, where necessary, the M. bovis eradication programme will refer those with poor NAIT records to MPI’s compliance team for investigation. They don’t want that.

“It’s easy to get lax, especially with the low numbers of M. bovis, but now’s the time we must be extra careful and that’s why we are taking these steps,” Andrew said.

Harrison said anyone unsure about their NAIT obligations should reach out to MPI, as there was plenty of support and information out there.

Depopulation of the infected farms in Mid Canterbury, plus the beef feedlot, begins mid-January.

The Big Feed calls farmers to action

Feel the need to contribute to your urban Kiwi whanau who might be doing it hard this Christmas?

Then now is your chance. The Big Feed, to be held this Thursday, and based at Lincoln University, is asking for donations of produce.

The Big Feed is New Zealand’s first rural telethon and is calling for farmers and those involved in the primary sector across the country to donate some of what they produce.

Farmers grapple with problems and challenges that seldom, if ever, bother city Kiwis, but putting nutritious food on the table isn’t one of them. The same can’t be said for some families in our towns and cities – especially around Christmas time.

In one day, the event – livestreamed across Facebook and YouTube – aimed to raise one million ‘meals’ which would provide foodbanks across New Zealand with milk and mince for their food parcels.

For the past two-and-a-half years, the Meat the Need charity has brought together farmers with families doing it hard.

Farmers could donate their milk or pledge livestock (sheep, beef and deer).

Others without livestock could donate virtual animals online and farm staff could donate money through PaySauce. One hundred per cent of these

donations went into providing mince or milk to families whose budgets were stretched.

The Big Feed kicks off Thursday at 6am and runs for 13.5 hours till 7.30pm.

It would be live-crossed to over 100-plus farms, business, clubs and foodbanks across New Zealand.

The hosts were farmers and comperes Wayne Langford and Matt Chisholm.

Right from the get-go when Siobhan O’Malley and Langford launched Meat the Need, the drive was the belief that no-one in a country like ours should go hungry.

Keep in mind that food parcels from foodbanks were not handed out willy-nilly, they were given to families with a real need.

On Thursday, farmers could head to the Meat the Need website to ‘pledge’ an animal donation.

This meant when they next sent animals to the works, they would be sparing one or two of these for Meat the Need and the organisation would make the process as easy as possible.

For dairy farmers, the sign-up process to donate milk was simple – just head to the same web page

The form allowed them to choose how many litres they wanted to donate and it was a one-off donation.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There is no benefit to giving too much, especially if you’re giving it to the wrong people. Give to those who both need and appreciate the offering, and do so in an amount they can handle.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Consider the reasons you think of someone in such a warm and friendly light. These same qualities are within you. Today, you will walk this world in the lovely soft glow they radiate.

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll notice differences others do not and you’ll make distinctions between things such as power and leadership, taste and money, and beauty and conformity. Use these insights to forward kindness.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The high-flying bird has the best view of everything, but the subtle songs will not be heard at lofty altitudes. Like the bird, send yourself up for the broad view, but do all your singing on ground level.

LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You are connected to people who have and to people who need. You will make yourself into a conduit and distribute the resources. This you will do without effort, loss or gain. You’ll simply open and direct yourself.

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re mixed up in your own business; what a wonderful place to be! It will feel good to be in control. If you do not feel in control, maybe it’s not yours to handle after all. Simply give it back.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The aesthetics usually matter to you, and today, they’ll matter even more. Be strategic in your placement of beautiful things and in your embodiment of beauty. Surprise is an essential element.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Getting more sleep is one of the most effective steps to becoming healthier – and it’s free. With your busy life, it will require some planning, though, and a mild restructuring of your priorities.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You would rather be powerful than famous. You aspire to be like those who hold high positions and yet still work humbly on the ground level. They are among the most powerful forces of good in the world.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Keep thinking about that rush of feeling you’ll get when you arrive at your destination. Whether it’s pride, accomplishment or simply relief, hook your heartstrings to it and let it pull you forward.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You may not realise it, but your kindness and keen social instinct builds something for others -- a sense of belonging, comfort and kinship. It’s worth every bit of effort you put into it.

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): If forgiveness is hard for you, consider it optional. You don’t have to rehash the past to start new. You can accept the way it is now and build from here in any direction. This is a new day.

Is it Messi’s time to really shine?

He’s an ageing genius the likes of which the football world – even sport generally – has probably ever seen.

He’s without doubt a true global sporting superstar in which anyone unfamiliar with should check him out on the tele before he waves goodbye.

He is, of course, Lionel (that’s pronounced Lee-Oh-Nel for those non-footbally types) Messi. He’s the 35-year-old heartbeat to the Argentina team at the World Cup in Qatar and tomorrow they face Croatia in the semi-finals.

Victory there and Messi’s dream of at last winning the World Cup – in his final showing in football’s biggest dance – will be just one match away.

A World Cup final triumph would clearly be the ultimate fairytale finish for Messi who, though in the twilight of his

career, continues to be pivotal to Argentina’s hopes. Returning Argentina to the top of the world is obviously a massive motivation.

He’s also probably just as desperate to prove that he’s not only the best player of the 21st century but maybe the greatest of all time. Well, side-by-side, of course, with his divine and untouchable late countryman Diego Maradona.

But to watch Messi play now, and if you’d never followed him at all, you’d probably shake your head in disbelief and wonder what the fuss was about. Why?

Because Messi, who has always

been a player who’s worked to his own rhythm and in his own style, has a tendency to drift around.

means he can be even harder to mark, his ghost-like manoeuvres creating even more defensive

In March, he signed an endorsement deal with a fan engagement app that’s set to pay him $20 million annually and he has his own clothing line and a lifelong deal with Adidas.

His legend status is already confirmed, regardless of how the World Cup plays out, and all of this from a player who emerged from a working-class family.

He casually assesses the opposition for weaknesses, slowly floats on the periphery of the game until the moment is right. He works himself into space before bursting into life to create and finish goal scoring opportunities.

What all that means is that his teammates have to compensate for his almost total lack of defensive work and all-round effort. But for the opposition, it also

nightmares.

It’s part of the reason why he has claimed the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player for a record seven times, two ahead of his Portuguese rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s why he continues to collect massive paydays, earning up to $165 million annually in salary and incentives at his Barcelona club before transferring to Paris Saint-Germain in August last year.

The third of four children, Messi also overcame a physical disadvantage to eventually tame some of the best athletes the planet has ever seen.

Recognisably smaller, Messi was diagnosed early on with suffering from a growth hormone deficiency disease. Basically, it restricted his growth but not his ability to dominate the football world like few could have expected. Let’s hope it ends the right way at the World Cup.

Strong showing at nationals

They might not be coming home national champions, but the positive steps forward taken by the Mount Hutt College touch team over the past week have put the school in great stead going forward.

A large team of players, coaches and supporters trekked north

to Rotorua last week to compete at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ National Touch Championships.

The side finished 18th out of the 30 teams entered in the mixed competition and showed they’ll be a team to watch in the future as 15 of the squad’s play-

ers still have either two or three years playing in the team before their schooling days are completed.

The Mount Hutt College coaching duo of Jason Watene and Jack Saxon both said how proud they were of the team.

“Their development, both on

and off the field, made us extremely proud,” they said.

“The future is bright for this team with the squad together for the next two nationals.”

In eight of the side’s 10 matches they either led or were drawn at halftime but weren’t quite able to close the matches out.

The side was spending its final day in Rotorua yesterday relaxing before returning home today.

The side is pictured here in the red and black uniforms alongside the Rolleston College side.

Woodbine Rocks them at Methven

Not all that long ago, Geoff Kelk thought his days of taking a horse to the races were over.

After a long and enjoyable career as a trainer of standardbreds, the former Winchmore based horseman retired from training and pondered over whether or not that would be the end of his association with the game.

But a promising young pacer named Woodbine Rocks is brining Kelk and his wife Margaret, along with their good friends the Fordes and the Lucases back to the track and they’re loving every minute of it.

And on Sunday at Methven, they were in the winner’s circle.

Their three-year-old pacer grabbed the second win of his short-career with a well-timed run later in the day’s action, giving Methven legend Ricky May another success on his home track in the process.

“It’s a great thrill to win a race, it always has been,” Kelk said.

“I wasn’t sure what my involvement would be when I retired from training, but we got this horse, and I go out and help Laurence (Laurence Hanrahan) with working him which has kept a bit of a foot in the door, and it’s been great.”

A yearling sales purchase, Woodbine Rocks has now raced on five occasions for two wins and two seconds and right now it’s a case of enjoying the ride because there’s a lot to suggest that he’s only going to get better.

“This is all a bonus at the moment really, he’s had a great start to his career.”

The pacer races in Kelk’s racing colours which he said was a kind offer from Hanrahan when the horse first started stepping out in public.

“Laurence said he might as well wear my colours which was really nice, it’s good to see them back out their on the track again.”

Kelk held a training licence on his own accord for 36 years, winning 40 races during that time often with a small team of just one or two horses

Gerard O’Reilly has done the majority of the driving for Kelk during that time and was on board when the horse won his first race at Ashburton last month.

May stepped in to fulfil the driving duties on Sunday as O’Reilly was in Australia having watched daughter Sarah compete in the Australasian Young Drivers championship in Victoria.

Hanrahan, who is vice-president of the Methven Trotting Club, said he’d been surprised by the way Woodbine Rocks had developed.

“He’s probably one of the most improved horses I’ve ever had,”

he said.

“He was just a fairly ordinary type of horse there at one stage, but he’s developed into a lovely racehorse.”

Woodbine Rocks victory wasn’t the only local success at Sunday’s meeting with Alan and Jason Ford combining to win with their trotter Navara early in the pro-

gramme.

The two features, the Green Miles were won by Corravally Star for the pacers and Time Up The Hill for the trotters.

Tech Stags opening batsman Sam Clark added his name to the club’s honours board with a century at the weekend as the Stags piled on the runs in their win over Celtic A.

Inspired by Clark’s effort at the top of the innings, the Stags posted an imposing 332/9 from their 50 overs before rattling the Celtic cage with the ball to win by 213 runs – their sixth 50 over victory of the season.

Their total became the highest scored by a side in this year’s

competition so far with three of their innings totals featuring in the top five for the competition to this point as well.

After winning the toss on Saturday at the Ashburton Domain, the Stags walked out into the middle with the intent of putting together a big total. Clark and Jason Morrison saw off the new ball well until the latter fell for 24 with the score at 33.

That brought Des Kruger to the crease alongside Clark and the pair went to work combining for a 106 run second-wicket stand. Partnerships became the key point of the inning’s effort and Clark was there for the ride through most of them.

After Kruger departed for 65 from 54 deliveries, he then combined with Devon Flannery (25)

Clark piles on the runs as

for a 44-run stand, Matt Tait (17) for a 49-run partnership and Will McKee (22) also for 49 runs too.

Clark eventually fell with the score at 295-7. His 115-ball stay out in the middle featured 15 fours and a six as he went better than a run a ball for his 118-run effort.

Richard Print waltzed out into the middle late in the innings and blasted a quick 21 to push the side through to 332 before the 50 overs were up.

With a big total to chase, the Celtic A side were always going to be up against it.

Alex Veint removed two of their top order by sending their stumps flying, but it was the third and fourth change bowlers who did all the damage. Kruger backed up his batting heroics with 4-40 from

his six overs while Tait was also in good song claiming 3-27 from his almost seven overs as Celtic fell for 119 inside 30 overs.

The day wasn’t quite as happy for the Allenton side though who once again watched victory slip from their grasp against Temuka down in South Canterbury.

Asked to bowl first, the Allenton bowlers did their job in restricting their hosts to 128 inside 40 overs.

Mana Singh spearheaded the bowling attack and had the ball on a dime as he took 4-12 from eight overs.

His efforts combined with 3-7 from 3.4 from Jaideep Singh had Temuka in trouble throughout.

With a small score to chase, it looked like Allenton’s chance at getting their first win on the board for the season was looking good.

The loss of two early wickets didn’t help the cause, but Manish Rawat held his nerve at one end scoring 40 off 60 deliveries to keep his side in the hunt. When he fell as the seventh wicket, Allenton still needed 40 runs for victory but were unable to get there as they were eventually all out for 98 with 17 overs remaining.

One more game this week remains for both sides in 2022 with the Stags set to host Temuka at the Domain and Allenton heading back to South Canterbury to take on the table-topping Celtic seniors.

Both sides will have players missing as they travel to Invercargill with the Mid Canterbury side for the second Hawke Cup clash against Southland on Saturday and Sunday.

Allenton ladies stake claim on Sevens title

panui Club and Burnside in the division one competition.

The Allenton Bowling Club ladies sevens team will shoot for glory in the Bowls Canterbury Division One sevens competition after winning their section in the first stage of the competition on Sunday.

Bowls Canterbury turned its attention to this year’s Sevens competitions across the region on Sunday as the section play competition in men’s, women’s and Under 5s were all held ahead of this weekend’s post-section stage.

The Allenton ladies trekked to Fendalton for what looked to be a tough day out at the office against strong teams from Halswell, Pa-

But they brought their best game with them, sneaking through as the top qualifier with a superior points differential to Burnside who equalled them on points. But, they did it the hard way.

One win in the pairs in the first round was all they walked off the greens with but they improved on that with fours and singles victories in the second of the three rounds – both by big margins.

Sitting in third of the four teams going into the final round, only one result was going to see them win it and that was a cleansweep, which they managed to achieved winning singles, pairs and fours to finish with 12 competition points and a +58 differential, 15 clear of the Burnside team.

Two Mid Canterbury sides

competed in the Under 5 event with Allenton finishing second in their division and Hampstead were third in theirs.

In the men’s competition Methven and Allenton, who were lumped in the same section finished third and fourth respectively to miss out on the post-section stage of the competition this weekend.

It was a tough day for the other Allenton men’s side too, they finished fourth in their section to also miss out on a ticket to play this weekend.

Meanwhile, Craig Carter was in good form last week winning the Over 60s triples up in Christchurch.

The Methven bowler, who also plays out of Bowls Hornby up in the city teamed up with Hornby club mates Rob Salmon and Graeme Weeds to win the final in convincing fashion 17-2 over a side from Darfield.
