Every morning leading up to Christmas, eight-year-old Rosie Blampied of Ashburton and her six-year-old brother Jakob wake up with one mission in mind.

That is to find where in their home Jinx is hiding.

Jinx is a mischievous elf who follows the growing Elf on the Shelf tradition – watching over the children, flying off to

Santa at night to report on who has been naughty and nice, and returning each day to hide in a new spot.

Rosie and Jakob have found Jinx in some unusual predicaments. One morning he had tipped out the hot chocolate powder in the kitchen and was sitting on a toy digger to clean it up, another he had found the cheese grater and was using it to turn a toy snowman into marshmallow snowflakes, and another he was headfirst

in the crease of their couch cleaning out lollies which had fallen down there.

The children’s favourite was when he had written a note saying “I left your dad a funny treat, go find him now and look at his feet”. And lo and behold they found their father’s toenails had been painted purple.

Their mum Kim Anderson said Jinx was a wonderful addition to the family each Christmas, building on the magic of the

season, and he even had his own Instagram page.

Elf on the Shelf is a growing phenomenon in Mid Canterbury and New Zealand homes, having originated from a 2005 children’s picture book about an old Christmas tradition.

Elves are not to be touched by children, as otherwise their magic might vanish.

The story ends with the elves leaving to go back to Santa on Christmas Day.

Another Acads summer campaign kicks off

The Community Alcohol Action Project has kicked off its 26th year with a fun start, all in the aim of reducing drunk driving on Mid Canterbury roads.

The project’s summer campaign was officially launched yesterday, and has been a culmination of contributions from a variety of groups such as Police, and the Ashburton District Council and is overseen by the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug service (Acads).

The event hosted a variety of people from those groups on a short Christmas adventure, with a fun but serious look at Christmas drinking and responsible ways to get around when intoxicated.

There was a peer pressure element to some of the activities, and Acads health promoter Tania Scott said positive peer pressure is a great way to get people to make better decision, and improve the safety on our roads.

“We can see through all the stats in the sub-areas of Canterbury that we have some of the lowest stats around the December-January period, but we do have concerning numbers around February and March, which we want to improve,” she said.

Scott also said one of the biggest demographics of concern was men aged from 30 to 46.

Scott said she has held private groups for men in that age bracket that have admitted to drink driving, and often have dangerous, uninformed ideas around drink driving.

“They say that it is safer for them to just take the back roads and only go 70km/h in the middle of

the road but that obviously isn’t the case,” she said.

“They are people that generally make good choices and we rely on them in our communities, but they are making bad choices around drink driving.”

The event was well attended by many from local community groups and organisations and the three emergency services, including Police sub-area commander Phil Dean.

“Alcohol continues to be a major factor in our road accidents along with other distractions so anything that highlights that like this is a good thing,” he said.

“The big things are thinking about how you are going to get home and not letting your mates make bad decisions.”

The message is still to get through for some people, with a man being pulled over in Methven on Tuesday at 3pm with 1300mcg

of alcohol per litre of breath, an amount Police say is staggering for any time of day, let alone in the afternoon.

The man has had his licence suspended for 28 days, and has been summoned to appear in the Ashburton District Court.

Police say they wish to thank the person that reported the man’s dangerous driving and that anyone else who sees something concerning to get in contact straight away.

Letting fees cost need to be recouped

Scrapping letting fees might be a cause for celebration for renters, but that celebration could be short lived says an Ashburton property manager.

The long signalled removal of letting fees – usually one week’s rent – came into effect yesterday, but that money covered a range of work that will still have to be paid from someone’s pocket Proper-

ty Brokers South Island property manager Sonia Booth said.

Her company has already stated that, instead of receiving the money as rent, it will now be charging landlords the fee. It will then be up to those landlords how and if they sought to recoup their extra costs.

Letting a property did not come without expenses for the letting agent, Booth said.

“There are quite a lot of costs in

letting a property such as marketing, viewing, preparing tenancy agreements. We can’t cover those costs,” she said.

Because landlords could no longer cover those costs with a letting fee, normally one week’s rent, some may look to increase rents to bridge the income gap, Booth said.

“There are positives in this for renters, but the costs will end up being passed on because some-

one has to pay.”

The up-front cost for renters will now be five weeks rent in advance to cover a bond and rent in advance, rather than six.

The removal of letting fees are among a number of changes being introduced into the home rental market and ultimately this could see some investors decide to exit the market, Booth said.

“Landlords are aware of what’s happening and while we’re seeing

some putting properties up for sale, it’s not significant at the moment,” she said.

Some landlords may choose the option of ditching the letting agent to avoid the fee, but the Real Estate Institute believes the more likely outcome is they pass they costs on to tenants through incremental hikes in rent.

Chief executive Bindi Norwell said it mightn’t be the Christmas present renters are hoping for.

A butcher by day and artist by night

Emerging artistic talent Stuart Mitchell has an eye for anatomy which many believe comes from his trade as a butcher.

The 47-year-old grinds and welds old tools into life, fashioning them into sculptures of animals, ranging from horses and goats to birds and hedgehogs.

He said while some people had said to him he seemed to have an in depth knowledge of bone and muscle structure, he did not so much see a connection between his day job and his art work, as a contrast.

“Because I’m nice and clean in the whites all day long, it’s quite good to get home and get the welder out, and the grinder, and make smoke and sparks,” Mitchell said.

Second in charge at Netherby Meats, Mitchell was educated at Ashburton College and has been at the shop ever since, totalling 31 years.

About four years ago he decided to start doing something with the many old tools he liked to hoard.

He had always enjoyed going to garage sales and swap meets, and

came back with boxes of tools from an estate sale down the road from his Netherby home.

“I thought there must be some-

thing I can do with it.”

So he got into his garage and made a couple of planters which looked like owls.

People liked them, so he got more adventurous, and in 2016 won first prize in a class at the Ashburton A&P Show.

He went onto win Best Small Sculpture at a national competition in Fielding, and today finds his work growing in popularity.

Ashburton Grace Gallery owner Brent Holley is a big fan, and said Mitchell’s work sells like hotcakes.

“We had one piece that only lasted two hours. His work is very sought after.”

Holley said he was introduced to Mitchell’s work when the artist popped into the gallery and said he “played around” with metalwork.

Mitchell showed Holley a photo of one of his pieces on his phone, and Holley asked if he could visit his shed.

“Within 15 seconds of having a look in his garage I said ‘Do you understand how good this stuff is?’”

Mitchell is to feature in an exhibition at the gallery in February.

Gallery opposition vindicated

Ashburton solicitor Alister Argyle who was a vocal opponent of the design of Ashburton’s art gallery and museum, says he takes no satisfaction in knowing that his concerns over the building were justified.

He, and the late Laurence Cooney, were outspoken on the project’s design from the outset.

However, it was a very bad outcome for the district when the issues they predicted would occur,

had occurred, he said.

“I get absolutely no satisfaction from this.

“It’s very unfortunate for the art gallery and museum as both operations are excellent.”

From the outset, Argyle said, he and Cooney had raised concerns over the architect the council employed.

“They had no experience with an art gallery and the only thing we were able to find was that one employee had done some work on a gallery in Ireland. They were

not appropriate for this job and that’s where the problems started,” Argyle said.

The complex was never going to be fit for purpose and unfortunately that was what had now happened and the council and the community would be left to fix a problem that should never have occurred, he said.

And it was unfortunate that the current team of councillors and council staff were largely not involved in the original decisions, but they were the ones having to

do a make good, Argyle said.

“At the time there was a determination among some in and on council that this (project) was going to happen. They didn’t want to acknowledge the flaws we highlighted.”

The project had already blown its budget by more than $3 million and when the cost of repairs was added that would make it a very expensive project, he said.

A 4000-strong petition from the community was presented to district councillors in 2012

before they voted on proceeding with the art and heritage centre project. It did not change their minds.

A public rally that attracted 2500 people was also held on the day of the vote.

This was organised by businessman Russell Ellis who stood for both mayor and the council in the 2013 election.

He was successful in his bid for a seat around the council table and is now in his second council term.

Agrecovery popular for farmers recycling plastics Mid Canterbury farmers are playing a part in diverting empty plastic agrichemical containers from landfill by recycling them at four Agrecovery collection depots in the district.

The depots are part of a network of nearly 100 around the country.

Together, last year, they recovered and recycled 308 tonnes of plastic that might otherwise have been burnt, buried or dumped; a third of the national total was generated in Canterbury.

Methven’s collection site at Molloy Agriculture collected more containers than any other site in the country and has been a collection depot for more than a decade.

The company sells agrichemicals and offers an application service, but also helps educate farmers about environmental stewardship.

Agrecovery general manager Simon Andrew said plastic recovered in the past year was enough to fill a rugby field six feet high.

The plastic is repurposed in New Zealand into underground utility coverings and building materials.

Astron Plastics in Auckland takes the shredded plastic from Agrecovery and makes it into useful products again.

Community Christmas tree welcomed The Ashburton community Christmas tree has arrived in town for the festive season and students from Allenton School welcomed it with a round of Christmas carols.

The tree this year has found a home in the EA Networks Centre where it takes pride of place in the foyer. Before they hung two trinkets on the tree, the school’s students sang three Christmas carols – Little Drummer Boy, I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas and Silver Bells.

The 30 Year 3 and 4 students were members of the middle school choir.

Terror at Christmas market Three people died and 12 others were wounded in France when a man flagged as a possible extremist sprayed gunfire near the city of Strasbourg’s famous Christmas market, sparking a search for the suspect and French officials to put the country on increased alert for terror attacks.

French prosecutors said a terrorism investigation was opened, though authorities did not say what they thought to be a motive. Strasbourg is home to the European Parliament, one of several places locked down after the shooting and those inside prevented from leaving.

It was unclear if the market was the intended target. The alleged assailant got inside a security zone around the venue and opened fire from there, Mayor Roland Ries said.

Two years ago, a Tunisian man drove a hijacked truck into a busy Berlin Christmas market, an attack that killed 12 people. Strasbourg, which promotes itself as the “Capital of Christmas,” is located on France’s border with Germany, about 500 kilometres east of Paris.

Authorities said they had identified the suspect and he had a criminal record. The prefect of the Strasbourg region said the alleged shooter also was on a watch list of potentially radicalised individuals.

The Algerian and French-Algerian suspects went on trial in October on charges they were involved in the foiled plot for the attack.

They were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one to nine years.

May brushes aside confidence vote rumours Theresa May has brushed aside speculation of an impending vote of no confidence in her as prime minister, insisting she is focusing on securing reassurances from EU leaders about her Brexit deal.

After calling off a parliamentary vote on the deal, May has spent the day in talks with fellow leaders including Germany’s Angela Merkel and Mark Rutte of the Netherlands.

She said she had found a “shared determination” to address MPs’ concerns about the proposed backstop arrange-

ment for the Irish border in order to allow the deal to be brought back to the House of Commons and ratified.

Downing Street announced that the motion on the Brexit deal will come back to the Commons “before January 21”, with MPs expected to complete the final two days of debate before the momentous vote.

But May’s decision to delay the vote has sparked a fresh wave of speculation at Westminster about new letters of no confidence being submitted by Conservative MPs to the chair

of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.

After reports that some members of the European Research Group of eurosceptic Tory MPs were claiming that enough letters had been submitted to trigger a vote, May was asked whether she had been told the threshold of 48 letters had been reached.

She replied: “No, I have been here in Europe dealing with the issue I have promised parliament I would be dealing with.”

Meanwhile The Sun’s political editor said not enough let-

ters had been received to trigger a confidence vote.

“Friends of Graham Brady say he is not yet in possession of 48 letters,” Tom Newton Dunn said on Twitter.

Earlier the deputy political editor of Sky News Beth Rigby tweeted: “My ERG sources pretty confident now that 48 trigger been breached.

“Of course Sir Graham won’t announce while PM out of country – and we’ve been here before. But mood hardening,” Rigby said.

Canadian courts release Huawei executive A Canadian judge has set a string of conditions on a top Chinese executive facing possible extradition to the US while releasing her on 10 million Canadian-dollar bail.

Meng Wanzhou is required her to wear an ankle bracelet, surrender her passports, stay in Vancouver and its suburbs and confine herself to one of her two Vancouver homes from 11pm to 6am.

Justice William Ehrcke of

the Supreme Court of British Columbia says he is satisfied Meng, a well-educated businesswomen with letters of reference, does not pose a flight risk.

Justice Ehrcke announced his decision to grant Meng Wanzhou bail after more than two days of hearings.

Meng is the chief financial officer of telecommunications giant Huawei and also the daughter of its founder.

She was detained at the request of the US during a layover at the Vancouver airport on December 1 – the same day that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to a 90-day cease-fire in a trade dispute that threatens to disrupt global commerce.

The US has accused Huawei of using a Hong Kong shell company to sell equipment in Iran in violation of US sanctions. It also says that Meng and

Huawei misled banks about the company’s business dealings in Iran.

Earlier this week, China detained a former Canadian diplomat in Beijing in apparent retaliation.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said he would intervene in the US Justice Department’s case against Meng if it would serve national security interests or help close a trade deal with China.

Garner is vigilante in film Jennifer Garner and the producers of her new action film, Peppermint, noticed an interesting crowd reaction during early test screenings. Audience members, particularly women, would stand and cheer as Garner’s character, Riley North, one-by-one violently kills drug cartel thugs responsible for the murder of her 10-year-old daughter and husband.

The audience reaction has been connected to the rise of the #MeToo movement. “We were making it as the #MeToo movement was happening,” Garner told AAP in a recent interview.

“I think it was timed perfectly.”

Sheen had previously bashed AA amid his struggles with substance abuse, calling the 12-step programme a “cult”. A month after his controversial comments about AA and Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre, Sheen was fired from the series and replaced with Ashton Kutcher. In the following months, the Ferris Bueller actor’s bizarre behaviour continued to make headlines.

Watch out – Elf on the Shelf is about W

ith some of the more traditional forms of punishment out the window when it comes to keeping the children in line leading into Christmas, there was always going to be the need for something new and powerful to enforce good behaviour.

But I’d bet that not even the most brilliant of prophets could have predicted that the key to a happy, well-behaved household throughout the month of December would come in the form of a small doll who would flutter around the house for the entire lead-up to Christmas under the guise of being a spy for the man

in the red suit back at the North Pole.

Welcome to Elf on the Shelf.

Its powers are, by far, more impressive than those of the magic of Christmas.

Unless you’ve seen it in action, it’s quite hard to just understand how something so small and insignificant could

have such a hold on a young child’s mind, but the truth is, it does, and many parents around the world will be incredibly thankful for those powers.

With a set of specific rules about not being allowed to be touched during the entire visit to a household during December, Elf on the Shelf does an incredible job of capturing a child’s mind through its nightly endeavours.

The magic lies with the Elf on the Shelf’s ability to get up to all sorts of mischief, which keeps a child’s mind focused away from the fact that the elf is not real, and the rush around the house

But the elf doesn’t come without its problems.

There’s the constant need to come up with new and exciting ways to display the elf each night, and, watch out should you forget to change the location or activity that they are up to from one night to the next.

Many parents take to social media to share the exploits of their elf and also to bemoan the commitment to the cause that comes with having one.

But the positives do outweigh

the largely insignificant negatives.

It’s not the most traditional style of parenting – and there will be those who will speak against the use of an Elf on the Shelf in the lead-up to Christmas, but the truth of the matter is, that anything that can help at this time of the year is a great asset.

Christmas is a stressful time for a lot of families – and the knowledge that the elf might just be watching is usually enough to make children sit upright and eat all their vegetables before leaving the table.

And in most households, that is a huge bonus.

Taking time to reflect A

s 2018 draws to an end, and we turn our minds to celebrating Christmas and the holiday period with family and friends, I’d like to take the opportunity to reflect on the year that has been.

It has been a tremendous year of relentless positivity, compassion, kindness and hard work.

In the spirit of what was an inspiring campaign for me as a first term candidate and member of parliament – we came into government with the attitude of ‘let’s do this’, and suffice to say, we are doing it.

That isn’t to say there isn’t a lot still to do, but we can be proud of what we’ve achieved so far.

I am immensely proud to be an MP based in the beautiful Rangitata electorate. It is not a privilege that I take for granted.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting out in the community and getting to know the people of this region. It is my favourite part of the job!

coming Communities events, attending the opening of Three Rivers, visiting schools and Minister Grant Robertson’s recent visit.

Just to name a few.

I know there are challenges facing many Mid Cantabrians right now, we are in a unique position with extremely low unemployment.

As you will know, from watching Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel on national TV, there are approximately 500 jobs available here.

Details of a regional skills shortage list are due to be in place come April.

We will not become complacent. I am committed to making

changes for our area, and will continue to stop various ministers in the halls of Parliament to ask what is happening and what is being done to fix some of those challenges we face here.

Our government is working hard to make change, to be transformational.

Children are at the heart of our policy and as a mum and a former ECE teacher this really is special, and so important, because we want New Zealand to be the best place in the world for children to grow up.

With policies like the Best Start payment, extension to Paid Parental Leave, winter energy payments and cheaper doctors visits, I can see that we are going to make that happen, it’s exciting!

And we are only just beginning.

I recently spoke in the House on our government’s 12 Achievements of Christmas – the auspicious government remix!

New policy initiatives like the

guarantee of healthy homes, first year fees-free tertiary study, a restart of SuperFund contributions and investment in the regions through the Provincial Growth Fund, all made my list.

Perhaps most importantly, is what I believe the government gave to Kiwis on the twelfth day of Christmas.

Which was a renewed sense of hope, aspiration, ambition and an opportunity for them to realise their worth, and to live out their vision supported by a government that governs from a place of integrity, compassion and kindness.

Meri Kirihimete to you all, and let’s look forward to a prosperous 2019.

Arable feeds test as best options

Arable feeds have the highest potential to reduce nitrate leaching among dairy cows, but options are limited under a pasture-based system.

Computer modelling has found that maize silage, whole crop cereal silage and grain supplements are the best options to reduce nitrate leaching and methane production in pastoral systems.

The modelling results of environmental benefits of arable feeds was presented by Lincoln University livestock production Professor Pablo Gregorini at the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) field day, CROPS, at Chertsey.

He said dairy cows were quite inefficient with absorbing nitrogen as they excreted 75-80 per cent of what they consumed and most of that went into urine.

This inefficiency went down to 30 per cent of nitrogen with different feed systems, he said.

Cows urinated two to three litres 12-14 times a day to produce the equivalent of a “lot of rain pee’’ and burped 100 times a day and farted 700 times a day for 250-350 grams of methane a day.

“These animals are per hectare emitting 3-5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent to the atmosphere so we face a dilemma. We know when we try to feed animals to reduce nitrogen excreted we increase methane production, so what are we going to do? That is a trade-off.’’

Gregorini said New Zealand farmers were in a pastoral system, but there were fewer diets containing at least 50 per cent pasture fulfilling the three targets.

The performance of palm kernel extract (PKE) for meeting the three targets was poor, said Gregorini, in response to a grower question.

He said PKE did not help a lot because of its high protein content.

Fodderbeet helped reduce nitrogen excreted, but there remained doubt about its performance, he

said. The problem with diluting nitrogen intake with other higher starch and fibre content supplement options was it increased methane production. This made it difficult for farmers to balance environmental, productivity and profitability targets.

The modelling was done in response to political and public pressure on dairying to reduce the amount of nitrogen flowing through dairy cows.

A two-year Environmental Benefit of Arable Feeds monitoring project, led by FAR project leader Ivan Lawrie is heading into its final year.

Lawrie said the study was investigating whether the livestock and cropping sectors could work together to reduce nitrate concentrations of urine.

Data collected at two South Island farms and two North Island farms would go to Gregorini’s team for modelling, he said.

Alliance dishes out bonus shares

Large meat processor Alliance Group has issued 9.5 million bonus shares to its farmer shareholders.

More than 3000 farmer shareholders have received the shares from the farmer-owned co-operative.

Alliance chief executive David Surveyor said the bonus share issue rewarded farmers by increasing their shareholding in the company.

“We are New Zealand’s only 100 per cent farmer-owned major red meat co-operative and our farmers tell us they value their ownership. This bonus share issue is another example of Alliance

acknowledging our farmers are at the heart of every decision we make.

Surveyor said Alliance was committed to returning as much value as possible to its farmers.

The company paid $14.63 million in loyalty payments over the 2017-18 season, in addition to the bonus share issue.

The bonus share issue is based upon the supply of lambs, sheep, cattle, calves and deer during the 2017/18 season.

Companies deliver bonus shares as one of several ways to reward investors without digging into their cash balances.

Alliance will be holding its annual meeting in Dunedin on December 18.

New Zealand’s average dairy herd size has tripled in the past 30 seasons on the back of dairy expansion in the South Island, DairyNZ figures show.

The total cow population in the 2017-18 season was 4.99 million, up 2.7 per cent on the previous season.

Average dairy farm size also increased in the season, to 151ha effective.

Although the North Island is home to the majority of dairy herds (72.3 per cent), the South Island accounts for 40.9 per cent of all cows milked.

South Island herds had higher production than North Island herds on average, North Canterbury’s average herd production being the highest at 331,739kg of milksolids. This reflected a combination of larger herd sizes, higher stocking rates and more milksolids per cow.

In 2017-18, average production per effective hectare and production per cow were both higher in the South Island than in the North Island.

Twenty-three per cent of all dairy cows were located in the Waikato region, followed by North Canterbury (14.0 per cent), Southland (11.7 per cent) and Taranaki (9.6 per cent).

There were 2 million cows in the South Island in the 2017-18 season, North Canterbury’s average herd size of 803 being the largest.

Farms in the South Island were on average larger than those in the North Island, both in terms of farm area and cow numbers.

The average herd size in both islands increased this season.

Hawke’s Bay’s average herd size of 664 was the largest in the North Island.

The smallest average herd sizes were in Auckland (273), Taranaki (295) and Northland (319).

South and North Canterbury had the highest average cows per

hectare (3.44 and 3.43 respectively).

The regions with the lowest average cows per hectare were the West Coast (2.21) and Northland (2.28 per cent).

Otago was home to 5.4 per cent of the national dairy herd

population, and Southland’s proportion was 11.7 per cent.

Otago had 445 herds, a total of 267,874 dairy cows, and 91,438 hectares effective.

Southland had 982 herds, a total of 583,240 cows and 221,343ha effective.

Air NZ customers told to wait and see

By Grant Bradley A travel agent says it has been getting calls from worried customers since Air New Zealand engineers threatened to strike.

House of Travel is advising customers to “wait and see’’.

“Our stores have been receiving calls from anxious customers since last week and this morning with the announcement of the strike potentially being extended,’’ the firm’s commercial director Brent Thomas said yesterday.

“At this stage our

advice to customers is to wait and see what comes out of the negotiations, as difficult as it is during this delicate time as travellers are eager to know if their Christmas plans will be impacted.’’

It limits compensation to the actual cost of the delay, or 10 times the cost of the ticket, whichever is lower.

Air New Zealand general manager of customer experience Anita Hawthorne Tuesday night said the airline would do all it could to get passengers where they needed to be this Christmas.

“We know customers are very concerned about their travel plans at this important time of the year and unfortunately we are not in a position to provide certainty at this time,’’ she said.

“We are working on contingency plans to keep our flights moving the best we can if, as a worstcase scenario, strike action should go ahead – unfortunately some disruption would be inevitable though.”

At this stage no flight delays or cancellations were in place for the days of the proposed strikes.

Thomas said that at this stage if customers wanted to make any changes to an upcoming Air New Zealand booking, or any other associated travel plans, then they

would be personally responsible for change fees and the fare difference.

“However, if the strike does go ahead and disruptions occur then it is expected that the airline has a responsibility to provide options to affected customers.”

Southern Cross Travel Insurance has a cut-off time of 2.30pm on Friday, December 7 (when there was widespread reporting of the strike) for cover as a result of any strike.

If passengers with insurance bought before that time were travelling overseas the insurer says it may also be able to cover them for the extra costs of not being able to return to New Zealand as originally planned, such as accommodation costs and the costs of changing your flights.

“If your return to New Zealand is delayed due to this event, your period of insurance will automatically be extended at no charge until you’re reasonably able to return to New Zealand,’’ it says.

If travellers bought a policy after the cut off time Southern Cross would not cover claims relating to this event as it was not an “Unexpected Event” under the terms of the policy.

By Gavin evans Reducing emissions from the country’s heavy industry without using natural gas or a coal-biomass blend appears prohibitively expensive, based on analysis by Vivid Economics.

Using forestry to absorb emissions from hard-to-treat sectors like industrial heat, dry-year power generation and long-haul trucking, could raise energy costs by about $3.8 billion to $4.6 billion a year, or $1700 per household, the London-based consultancy says.

But if less planting is achieved than assumed in the Productivity Commission’s report on meeting the country’s 2050 net-zero carbon goal – and electricity or hydrogen has to be used to directly reduce emissions – that cost could climb to $6.2 billion to $7.2 billion – or $2700 per household annually.

One of the biggest contributors to that jump is the cost of alternative high-heat options for industry.

“Only 5 per cent of industry heat is provided by electricity, indicating the high cost and technical immaturity of this solution,” Vivid said.

“Currently, high-temperature heat pumps have an operational range of 80 to 150°C; while this is improving, the potential to cover high-grade heat processes is uncertain.

“The evidence on other technologies – hydrogen, resistive heating, induction heating and plasma torches – is currently poor and costs are expected to be high.”

Heavy industry accounts for about 15 per cent of the country’s emissions. Food processing, including dairy and meat processing, is heavily reliant on hot water and steam and accounted for about a third of the almost 9 per cent of emissions that came from manufacturing in

2016, according to government data.

Synlait Milk is aiming to commission a 6MW electrode boiler at its Dunsandel plant next month to reduce its reliance on coal. But at Pokeno, south-east of Pukekohe, it will use gas in the plant it is building there.

Fonterra is trialling a coal-wood blend at its Brightwater plant near Nelson but plans to install high-temperature heat pumps at its Stirling cheese plant near Balclutha to displace about 9700 tonnes of coal a year.

Azwood Energy is perplexed by the government encouraging electrification of process heat when it says wood is readily available, cheaper and would not add additional load on the national grid.

General manager Brook Brewerton said work by forestry research institute Scion indicated the country’s wood residues could displace as much as 70 per cent of the country’s coal demand and reduce emissions by 1.1 million tonnes per year.

“The Scion data is fantastic, it shows there is about 50 petajoules of energy going to waste,” he said.

“If large energy users are willing to pay half of what they would for electricity per gigajoule – Azwood Energy could double the recoverability of biomass.”

Mataura Valley Milk general manager Bernard May said customers are demanding more sustainable products and the dairy industry will have to adapt its energy supplies.

On the South Island, where the government has banned exploration for gas, that will mean switching to biomass, but more effort is needed to establish consistent, long-term supplies, he said.

The company, which already uses electric fork hoists and won’t allow suppliers to use palm kernel as

feed next season, this year commissioned a coal-fired boiler that can be converted for biomass further down the track.

But May noted the conversion might still cost a further $5 million, and the company can’t make that commitment until it can get a 10year fuel contract to back it.

“I’m sure it will be. We have to become more sustainable,” he said last week.

The Vivid study was commissioned by gas distributors First Gas and Powerco to test the role of gas in a low-carbon economy, including options for hydrogen blending to reduce emissions and large-scale hydrogen and biogas production as a complete replacement.

It took as a given that increasing wind and solar electricity could underpin large-scale electrification of light transport and low-heat energy use in industry. It then modelled what it would cost to meet the net-zero target if only 2.3 million hectares of forest was planted, compared with the 2.8 million assumed by the Productivity Commission.

Vivid found that using high-temperature heat pumps and resistive electric heating to reduce emissions from intermediate to high heat processing could cost between $200 and $700 for each tonne of CO2 avoided. And that figure was before any cost of upgraded transmission and distribution was allowed for.

Using hydrogen instead would cost between $130/MW and $160/ MW in 2050 – roughly twice the cost of gas, even after applying a $200 a tonne carbon tax.

“Overall, total costs of generating heat with hydrogen are significantly higher than with gas, and would need a carbon price of around $450 – $600/tCO2 to be economic without subsidy.”

Ashburton Bowling Club Another busy week on the greens.

Last Friday we had the Friday Triples having two full greens thanks to all the players who attended, the placings were as follows: 1st Mike Quinn, John Drayton and Rose Johnson 3 wins 20 ends, 2nd Trevor Johnson, Marty Watson and Maureen Knox 3 wins 15 ends, 3rd Graham Taylor, Roy Keeling and Harold Kemp 2.5 wins 17 ends (combined age of that team was 250yrs): 4th Diane Gutberlet, Ollie Collins and Roger Gutberlet 2.5 wins 15 ends. 5th Murray Smallridge, Peter Winham and Graeme Clark 2 wins.

The next day Saturday we held the Pairs and Fours and had a full green again.

The winners on that day were 1st Min Hill, Judie Ryk, Laraine and Jim Mills with 4.5 wins and 33 ends, 2nd Reg McJarry, Maurice Reid, Raylene Heads and Anne Reid. 4.5 wins and 32 ends, 3rd Murray Anderson, Dianna King, Winston Lee, Di Callahan 4 wins and 36 ends, 4th Roger and Diane Gutberlet Mike Quinn and Racheal Davies 4 wins and 35 ends. Playing in Fairlie Murray Anderson, Mike Quinn, Laraine and Jim Mills managed to retain the trophy for the second year.

On Sunday evening we had our Christmas Dinner with Ollie and Russell doing the catering which was well handled.

This evening went off very well, having a scrumptious meal along with lots of chatter. Noeline gave us a bit of history and GT managed to find some stories to tell.

The evening ended with our president Jo thanking all the helpers and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Ashburton Golf Club There is a four-way tie on 42 points after the first round of the Property Brokers Shootout qualifying.

Shootout virgins, Lucas McGee and Robert Pawsey, set down good markers and may well find themselves in the final come January 27.

MSA Golf Section MSA Golf Section played its last game for the season at the Tinwald Course on December 9 with a great turnout 24 players, they enjoyed a great day followed by drinks, prize-giving and a meal back at the MSA. The winners on the day in the men’s were Steve Thomas 43, Wayne Smith 41 and in the women Maddie Smith 43, Alison McGregor 41, Judy Webb 41. There was only 5 twos for the day W. Smith 2, A McGregor, Kay Fox, Steve Thomas.

Well done to them.

The overall winners for the year were: Men’s Champion Steve Strafford; Ladies Champion tied were Trish Cates and Kay Fox. This year we had trophies for overnight trip and the winners were men’s Wayne Smith, women Trish Cates. Also on Sunday was the Annual Presidents vs Captains which was won by the Captains 432-409, well done to Brent as he has had a great year as Captain.

The President and committee wished those present a Happy Christmas and holiday time. It was a lovely evening.

Wakanui WI President Jenette Storrier welcomed 14 members to the Hotel Ashburton for our Christmas meeting and a delicious lunch. The appropriate motto for the month was “Calories don’t count, they multiply!”

Members were very generous with donating grocery items for Ronald McDonald House and two tablecloths have also been given to Riding for the Disabled.

Prior notice was given for the Federation Founders Day February 21, 2019 at Staveley and the Federation AGM on February 26, 2019.

Members were asked for suggestions for our programme for 2019 including speakers and outings.

Member Bernice Laird who organises the Inter Rest Home Indoor Bowls competition each year suggested we may be interested in helping with serving afternoon tea. Members were keen to be involved.

Members will again cater for the Mid Canterbury Vintage Ploughing Match with a preliminary date given for May 25, 2019.

Next meeting our AGM will be January 23, 2019.

ABs approached Schmidt Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt rebuffed an approach from New Zealand Rugby to join the All Blacks coaching team late last year.

NZ Rugby boss Steve Tew confirmed to the Herald that Schmidt turned down an offer to return home and replace Wayne Smith in the All Blacks, choosing instead to re-sign for two years with Ireland through to the World Cup. It is understood that the role was for Schmidt to work alongside Ian Foster, with the view that one would likely be promoted to head coach whenever Hansen moved on.

The 2018 World Rugby Coach of the Year was widely tipped as the favourite to take over Hansen’s job until a shock announcement last month, where he revealed – shortly after leading Ireland to a 16-9 victory over the All Blacks in Dublin – that he will “finish coaching” following the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year.

The 53-year-old Schmidt said that he wanted to “prioritise family commitments after the Rugby World Cup in 2019”.

“Thank you to the IRFU for their support and patience and thanks also to so many people who have adopted my family and me, making us feel part of the community here in Ireland,” Schmidt said.

“There are some inspiring challenges over the next 11 months so there’s plenty of motivation for me to continue working hard,

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt with All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen and assistant coach Ian Foster. alongside the other management staff, so that the team can be as competitive as possible.”

Schmidt’s son, Luke, has battled a brain tumour since age four and suffers from epilepsy.

Luke needed a nine-hour operation at the age of six to remove the tumour.

The value Schmidt placed in being close to world-class London-based neurological care is a major reason he turned down multiple approaches from NZ Rugby to return home.

The Crusaders could be without several All Blacks for the start of next season.

As reported by the Herald in October, the Crusaders will be without Sam Whitelock who will be missing the first four matches of the Super Rugby season to recuperate fully before the All Blacks’ World Cup defence.

vealed that All Blacks captain Kieran Read will be joining Whitelock for an extended breather next year, with hooker Codie Taylor possibly also taking a break after a gruelling international season.

There is reportedly a twoweek mandatory break for All Blacks at the start of next year’s Super Rugby season, meaning both Read and Whitelock could miss up to six weeks for the Crusaders.

Taylor could also be granted an extended break, Ryan confirmed.

Whitelock and Read also missed a chunk of the season this year: Whitelock sat out a period with concussion issues, while Read missed the first nine weeks of the season while recovering from back surgery.

The rest of the All Blacks in the Crusaders squad are expected to run out from the start of the season.

The cricketing world knows Kane Williamson is a great batsman, none more so than Sri Lanka who face the Black Caps’ skipper in the first test beginning Saturday.

Following his 19th test century in the third test win over Pakistan last week, Williamson now has multiple centuries against every test nation except Zimbabwe.

He moved up into second spot on the ICC test bating rankings yesterday, leapfrogging suspended Aussie skipper Steve Smith to sit one place behind India’s Virat Kohli.

There’s a very good chance he makes more ground on the Indian captain over the coming weeks considering his best test form comes against Sri Lanka.

Williamson has faced Sri Lanka in six tests and across 12 innings and has an average of 91.88 – easily his best average against any nation. Of those 12 innings, seven times he’s

passed 50 including three centuries.

On top of that, the Black Caps’ skipper averages 63.07 at the Basin Reserve where he has scored three test centuries.

His highest test score of 242 not out came in the second test victory against Sri Lanka in 2015, part of a 365-run world record partnership for the six wicket with BJ Watling.

The good news for the tourists is Williamson’s ‘poor’ record at Hagley Oval, which hosts the Boxing Day test.

It’s one of two New Zealand grounds that Williamson hasn’t scored a test century, with a high score of 97.

Hard-working trio recognised Three long-serving members of the Mid Canterbury Netball community have been officially recognised for their years of work.

Claire Corbett, Kaye Kennedy and Leonie Donald were all presented with service awards at the Mid Canterbury Netball AGM recently.

Corbett has been involved in netball in Mid Canterbury for the past 19 years and has helped in all areas of the sport. She began umpiring in 1999, was selected in the Mid Canterbury umpire development squad in 2002 and 2003 and coached theory for many years as well as being a regional umpire trainer.

She always kept herself up to date, attending New Zealand umpire seminars, centre tester training and regional umpire training, and was a member of the regional sponsorship panel and an accredited umpire coach and assessor at New Zealand level.

In 2003 and 2004 Corbett led rules sessions every Saturday during the season for umpires, coaches and players wanting to better understand the rules, and she umpired representative fixtures and Mid Canterbury Netball competition games.

She has served on many committees and was always a valued member of them all.

Kennedy has also had a long involvement in all areas of the game after passing her local level one umpire award in 1999 and going to on pass her regional exam and New Zealand qualifying exam in 2003.

In 2004 Kennedy was named in the New Zealand umpire development squad and in 2005 she was appointed to the New Zealand Age Group Champs, and was selected to the New Zealand Umpire Development Squad from there. She was also appointed to the New Zealand Scotwood Trust Champs in Dunedin that same year.

Kennedy was also on the Borough School Sports committee and had been on the Ashburton College Netball Club committee for the past two years, coaching teams from both schools including the College A side this season.

She has also been a Mid Can-

terbury selector of the U17 representative team.

Donald’s involvement in Mid Canterbury netball spanned the past 20 years, and she’d been a part of the Methven Netball Club for the past 23 years.

Still a member of the Methven Netball Club, Donald has held many posts within the club over the years and coached numerous Methven club teams, as well as umpiring at Methven player de-

velopment camps and assisting with club umpiring sessions.

She became a local level 3 umpire in 1999 and the following year passed her Canterbury regional award and completed New Zealand Theory part A in 2001.

She had umpired competition and representative games in Mid Canterbury for the past 17 years and has also umpired at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Tournament.

Donald has assisted with New Zealand test banks of questions sessions, was an umpire examiner at local level, appointed umpires to representative fixtures and helped at junior umpire sessions.

She has umpired Mid Canterbury local competitions for the past 18 years and umpired representative fixtures, as well as being a bench official for the last three years and serving on the umpire committee for 20 years.

Tuivasa-Sheck targets big NRL start Dally M medal winner Roger Tuivasa-Sheck reckons he’ll hit the ground running both physically and mentally when the Warriors begin next year’s NRL campaign.

The Warriors skipper returned from knee surgery in time for day one of pre- season, a rare feat for someone used to late returns because of international duties or injury.

Voted the best player in the NRL for 2018, Tuivasa-Sheck’s season ended on a low when he was carried off midway through the Warriors’ elimination final loss to Penrith.

The fullback was devastated to miss New Zealand’s tests against Australia and England but that did allow him to join some of the club’s lesser lights for pre- season training last month.

He hopes it will translate into an electric start when the Warriors host Canterbury in

round one on March 16.

Battling niggles throughout this year, the metre-eating Tuivasa-Sheck expects to be fitter in 2019 and a superior all-round player.

“I want to be better at my catch-andpass and there’s so many other things that they’re pointing out, so if I just keep focusing on the small things they’ll lead to bigger achievements at the back end,” he said.

Tuivasa-Sheck will also take the same self-centred approach into games that helped him raise his level midway through the 2018 campaign.

Even the departure of halfback Shaun Johnson to Cronulla won’t prompt the 25-year-old to spend time trying to find solutions in terms of tactics and personnel.

That, Tuivasa-Sheck said, is coach Ste-

phen Kearney’s job.

“I’ll just focus on getting myself right before I get the team right, there were big lessons that I took from last year,” he said.

“I tended to turn up to training and check what boots everyone was wearing and stuff like that. That just took my head away from what I was doing.

“I strung together some pretty bad performances last year so it’s very important that I focus on myself before I look at carrying anyone.”

Tuivasa-Sheck is impressed by the athleticism and enthusiasm of Warriors juniors Chanel Harris-Tavita and Hayze Perham, considered the front runners to replace Johnson.

He said both teenagers remind him of a young Johnson and either could slot into a proven spine of hooker Issac Luke, half Blake Green and himself.

Spurs held Barcelona 1-1 at Nou Camp with Lucas Moura’s late equaliser proving to be decisive with group rivals Inter Milan playing to a 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven. Spurs needed to match or better the Italians’ result to follow Group B winners Barcelona into the next round, with Moura cancelling out Ousmane Dembele’s brilliant opener to level the scores after 85 minutes.

It was a great day out for the Mid Canterbury Year 7s as they picked up a win

over their city rivals, but across the domain it wasn’t such good news for the Mid Canterbury Primary team.

They were also playing Canterbury Metro but after bowling first and dismissing the visitors for 64, Mid Canterbury were then bowled out for just 35.

The teams have been busy preparing for tournaments in January, with the Year 7s going to a tournament at Mandeville starting on January 21 and the primary team heading to the South Island Primary Schools’ Tournament in Oamaru, starting on January 7.

Tough turnaround for Aussies, India A three-day turnaround between tests shapes as a physical and mental challenge for both Australia and India.

The four-test series continues at Perth’s Optus Stadium tomorrow, with the tourists having recorded a 31-run win in Adelaide to take the early advantage.

Both teams travelled on Tuesday, essentially leaving them with just two days to recover, review what went right and wrong during the series opener then ready themselves for the second test.

The most obvious priority for both camps, apart from Tim

Paine’s finger injury that Australia coach Justin Langer insists is “absolutely fine”, is ensuring their respective pace attacks are fit and ready to fire.

Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami delivered a total of 123.4 overs in Adelaide, where Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins combined for 120.5 overs.

The six stars are likely to be licking their lips upon hearing some predictions of a pitch with plenty of pace and bounce.

However, they’re unlikely to roll the arm over much in the

nets before day one of the second test.

“They have to rest up. To hell with the nets. You just come there, mark your attendance and get away to the hotel,” India coach Ravi Shastri said.

Apart from managing players’ physical workloads, Langer is keen to ensure his inexperienced charges aren’t mentally cooked after a tense finish to Australia’s much-anticipated first home test since the Cape Town cheating scandal.

“Training will probably look a lot different at this time of the

year than perhaps we’ve seen in the past,” Langer said.

“We’ll freshen the guys up. It’s something we’re aware of. On the one hand, the youth helps us because they’ll have the physical energy. It’s (also) mentally very taxing playing test cricket. It’s really tiring’.”

Mitch Marsh will link with the test squad but the vice-captain is likely to be left on the sidelines again. Langer suggested quicks Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins will be fine to back up, meaning Peter Siddle will be on drinks duty once again.

Mercurial Australian ODI and T20 all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will take over as captain of the Melbourne Stars for the eighth edition of the BBL. The 30-year-old replaces fast bowler John Hastings, who held the role last season but had signed with the Sydney Sixers before a rare lung condition forced him into retirement. Maxwell, who has previously captained Indian Premier League team Kings XI Punjab, has played 37 matches for the Stars, scoring 973 runs, since joining them for BBL02. “We’re a family and to be able to lead this group and continue to build on an already strong culture is really exciting,” Maxwell said at the franchise’s season launch in Melbourne yesterday.

Blond Bolt lucky Expect to see Alex Bolt’s bleached blond curls bobbing around the Australian Open if he wins this week’s wildcard playoff at Melbourne Park. Bolt, the No.1 seed in the playoff, is sporting “topdeck” style dyed blond on top of his brown hair thanks to a mate’s handiwork. Tragedy tribute

Johnson’s new club under microscope Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan played a central role in luring Shaun Johnson across to the Sydney NRL club, but new evidence relating to the Sharks mentor’s 2014 peptide ban has put his job under threat.

Johnson could unexpectedly find himself playing under a new coach next season after the former Warriors halfback recently signed a three-year deal to join Flanagan’s star-studded Sharks squad.

The Kiwi international’s move to Cronulla comes while the club is being investigated by the NRL after Sharks management decided to report themselves over po-

tential salary cap breaches dating back to 2015.

The NRL’s integrity unit have examined mobile phone records, staff computers and the club’s internet server, with details coming to light of a phony invoice scam and a suspect bank loan which the Daily Telegraph reports was used to pay at least one player.

Through the course of that investigation, the Daily Telegraph reports, the integrity unit have questioned Flanagan, after uncovering emails indicating he had been in contact with Cronulla officials during his 12-month suspension. As part of his ban re-

lating to the peptide scandal, the NRL declared he was not allowed to have any contact with players or club staff.

But according to the Daily Telegraph, an email and phone message trail reveal Flanagan had been communicating with senior staff during his suspension, putting plans in place for when he was allowed to return to the head coaching job in 2015.

Recruitment matters regarding players coming off contract, welfare and injury issues are said to be among the topics discussed.

Despite the salary cap investigation, Johnson’s move to Cro-

nulla did not raise eyebrows, as the shock departure of Valentine Holmes to the NFL provided the Sharks’ 2019 salary cap with a significant boost.

Last week, Johnson detailed how he had enjoyed open discussions with Flanagan relating to the club’s current roster, which had encouraged him to accept the Sharks’ offer, after he was granted a release.

“You want to go somewhere and know what is going on with the squad, and Flanno [Shane Flanagan] was unreal in letting me know the exact status of every player,” Johnson said.

Australian Sailing president Matt Allen has lent his 60-foot Ichi Ban to John Winning Jr, who will sail along with his father. Both John Winnings have tasted victory in the great race but never together. John Jr was aboard Perpetual LOYAL when it took line honours two years ago and John Snr has been aboard both line and overall winning boats but hasn’t done the race since 1996. Two years later, his cousin Richard Winning was skipper of Winston Churchill, which lost three of the six sailors who died in the horrendous weather.

Mile test for Precious One Wingatui trainer Claire Anderton will be hoping to answer a few questions with her regally-bred mare The Precious One at Ascot Park on Saturday.

The Darci Brahma four-yearold, who is out of dual Group One winner The Jewel, will lineup in the Tim Yeo Contracting Handicap (1600m) and her connections want to see if she can handle the step-up to a mile.

The Precious One’s only unplaced run in her seven career starts came at that distance, but Anderton believes her boisterous mare cost herself the race when over-racing in the lead.

“I am very pleased with how she has been going, even when she was unplaced she wasn’t even two lengths from the winner that day,” Anderton said.

“She had gone to the front and pulled too hard, so even that was a good run.

“When Chris (Johnson, jockey) rode her (that day) he was a bit dubious as to whether she could see out the mile, but I believe it was just because she was out infront and went hard.”

The Precious One added blacktype to her stellar pedigree page last-start when she was runner-up to Kiwi Ida in the Gr.3 Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton last month.

Anderton was pleased with her effort in that race and said she has kept her up to the mark ahead of Saturday’s contest.

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have been pleased with the Azamour mare since she returned from a light freshen-up and believe that if she shows on raceday what they have been seeing in her work, she should be a winning chance.

“Hopefully she will run better than she has recently. Her first two runs in her prep in the spring were great,” Eustace said. “We thought she was back to her best, but we were disappointed at Flemington, we really fancied her in the Myer and she didn’t really fire.”

“I am very lucky to have her in the stable, she’s a privilege to train.”

After a disappointing runner-up performance last start at Counties, the decision was made to geld the horse. “He’s just come back and he looks fantastic,” Tiley said. “The gelding went extremely well, you are always a little bit worried when you geld an older horse, you might have some complications, but he’s just taken it in his stride and he looks as though he’s chilled out with being gelded.”

Trained in New Zealand by Lauren Brennan at Cambridge, the son of Casino Prince won two races and was runner-up in his four other starts in New Zealand. Although disappointed in losing the gelding, Brennan was philosophical about the move.

Chase Auckland on song at trials It may have been an inconspicuous appearance to most but Tim Williams’s smile told a thousand words at Ashburton on Tuesday.

It showed that last season’s Sires Stakes Final and Northern Derby winner was coming to hand nicely ahead of his imminent race night return.

Unsighted in a tote race since his emphatic victory in the Northern Derby at Alexandra Park back in March, the son of Auckland Reactor had a quiet time of it in the

Ashburton workout, running midpack in a field of largely maiden pacers after a winning return at the same location last week.

Not really asked to extend by Williams, who stepped into the driving role for trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, Chase Auckland hit the line strongly and, most importantly, felt fantastic.

“It was exactly what we wanted,” Williams said.

“He’s had a really good blow and

will take a lot of improvement out of the run.

“I’m pretty happy with that.”

What was clearly visible was the notable changes in the makeup of the talented pacer.

During his spell from racing he’s strengthened right up and develop a serious presence that demands attention - a change noted by many who saw him in the flesh on Tuesday.

A winner of eight of his nine starts and close to $400,000 in

stake earnings already – Chase Auckland’s return will add some real venom to the four-year-old pacing ranks for some of the major features which lay ahead.

But the camp behind the rising star won’t be rushing into anything they don’t have to.

“He’ll head back to the trials again next week,” Williams added.

“After that he’ll probably be ready for a race and things will grow from there.”

Safely through that trial next

week the target will quickly become the Chariots of Fire in Australia earlier next year with a number of qualifying options available to connections.

They could head to the JLT Futurity at Cambridge on January 11 with the winner of that race given automatic entry into the Chariots of Fire or there will be plenty of options available in Australia.

There’s clearly plenty of excitement around about Chase Auckland’s future prospects.

Ashburton swimmer Bree Middleton is set to return home from the Victorian State Championships in Australia with a bronze medal firmly in her grasp.

Middleton, 15, was part of a Swimming Canterbury West Coast contingent competing at the Australian competition this week and

on Tuesday she swam her way to a third placing in the 100m freestyle.

She headed into the finals as the sixth seed but defied that seeding and swam a new personal best of 59.16 seconds to claim the bronze.

Middleton’s medal was part of a successful day five of the Victorian champs for the young Kiwis, with one gold, three silvers and three

bronze medals being taken out.

Overall, the team finished with 63 new personal best times out of their 111 events, for a 56.75 per cent personal best record, making it a successful meet for Canterbury West Coast Swimming.

For Middleton it was a huge meet. She also finished fifth in the 400m freestyle, fourth in the 800m freestyle with a new personal best,

and fifth in the 1500m freestyle.

Middleton was one of four members of the Ashburton Swim Team selected for Canterbury Pathways squads recently.

She was selected into the gold squad to travel to Melbourne, while Blake Farr, 15, was selected into the silver squad for a threeday training camp in Cambridge followed by two days of competi-

Ashburton swim team coach Shane Jones was also selected as a coach for the silver squad.

Hannah King, 12, was selected for the bronze squad and Lucie Hood, 11, for the talent two ID squad. Both girls had travelled to Invercargill to swim in the Southland Championships, starting tomorrow.
