Pasifika vaccine clinic a success Malcolm Hopwood A successful turnout has justified the decision to hold a mobile Covid vaccination clinic for Pacific Island community members in Ashburton.

As part of Canterbury District Health Board’s organisation, Waitaha Primary Health held a Pacific health day on Saturday prior to administering over 200 jabs at Ashburton College on Sunday.

Pacific Health navigator, Malu Tulia, said her team met Pacific Island people in Ashburton on Saturday, answering questions and assuring them the vaccine would protect them from the virus.

“Some were concerned that Covid was inside the vaccine it and they’d be vaccinated with it, while others believed they didn’t need it because they lived in a country that was isolated from the virus,” she said.

“We listened to their questions

and fears and helped to educate them about what they needed to know.’’

At 12.30pm on Sunday, there was a queue at the gate for their jabs and the health team was kept busy throughout the day.

“The turnout justifies our reason for coming down and reaching Pacific Island people,” she said.

“Some were scared at first but, after their 20-minute wait following the vaccine, they came to us, said ‘thank you’, had something to eat and left.

“They’re ready for us to return on September 26 to deliver the second vaccine.”

A further clinic will be held in Ashburton on August 29 for immigrant groups and recent arrivals.

The general manager of the Tangata Atumotu Trust, which is working with the DHB to provide the vaccines, said Ashburton was one of four venues in Canterbury where the clinics were being held.

“We’re like a circus. We pop it up and then take it away again,” general manager, Carmen Collie, said.

“I’m very happy with the way it’s gone.’’

Johnston brothers back maternity initiative Jonathan Leask A donation from Alan and Bob Johnston has helped the Maia Health Foundation deliver more than expected for Christchurch Hospital’s maternity services, including in Ashburton.

The foundation set out to raise $44,000 to purchase 20 specialist chairs for Level Five at Christchurch Women’s Hospital but ended up smashing the target, raising more than $65,000 in one month.

The fundraising drive was launched in early July to celebrate Maia’s fifth birthday and raised enough to purchase 30 chairs for Canterbury’s maternity services.

Of those, two of the chairs will be provided to the Ashburton Community Maternity Unit, thanks to a generous donation from Ashburton brothers Alan and Bob Johnston.

The specialist lie-flat chairs will provide a comfortable place for a support person to stay alongside a new mother and baby.

Currently support people are welcome to stay but sleep on a vinyl mattress on the floor or in an uncomfortable chair.

are either unwell themselves, have just had surgery or their baby is unwell.

Director of Midwifery for the Canterbury and West Coast DHB, Norma Campbell, said these women and babies need support and while support people are encouraged to stay alongside a new mum and baby, it’s tough when they can’t offer them a welcoming or comfortable place to sleep.

But Campbell said these chairs are going to change that – and she couldn’t be happier.

“We’ve been so humbled by the support this campaign has received,” Campbell said.

The Mainland Foundation provided the significant donation of $44,000.

Walnut Avenue lights ‘to make difference’ to congested highway Adam Burns It was hard to ignore just how busy the Ashburton district has become during formalities yesterday.

A sod-turning ceremony near the construction sites was held to mark long-awaited multi-million dollar upgrades at the Walnut Avenue roundabouts and the hum and bustle of the main highway served as a somewhat fitting soundtrack.

Ashburton mayor Neil Brown could not help but point this out during his speech, possibly in an attempt to leverage a point around the need for ongoing infrastructure support from central government.

“Look out there now, it’s busy as,” he said.

“Even during the day, it clogs up before school, after school, lunchtime, there’s only a few hours of the day that it doesn’t congest up.

“Hopefully with the lights it’ll make it better.”

The upgrades, a collaboration between Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), Kiwirail and the Ashburton District Council, includes replacing the two Walnut Ave round-

abouts with traffic lights, creating a new rail level crossing and improving pedestrian and cycling facilities.

Fulton Hogan are handling construction on the $15 million project which is part of the government’s $8.7 billion backing into growing communities around the country.

With Rangitata MP Jo Luxton in attendance, the mayor also cheekily floated a mention around funding for a second urban bridge which council is working on a business case for.

“Jo, I’m sure there’s some money in there for our bridge so just make note of that,” he said.

Luxton said the upgrades would be of significant benefit for school pupils in the town.

“It will make these two critical intersections much safer and I think that’s hugely important here for our children.”

Enabling works have begun at the intersections and Fulton Hogan regional manager Stephen Lowe said dealing with children and pedestrians as the project develops will need to be managed carefully.

“The critical phase will be when we remove the roundabouts,” he said.

“That’s when we’ll have to manage things differently and there’ll be some detours that we’ll have to work at at night time to allow that to happen.”

The project is expected to be completed by Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown, Rangitata MP Jo Luxton and Te Runanga o Arowhenua’s Te Wera King at yesterday’s sod-turning ceremony.

Groundswell plans more action for November Heather Chalmers Farmer group Groundswell NZ plans more protest action, including a second nationwide event in November, following what it says is a lack of response from the Government to its calls to review unworkable environmental regulations.

Groundswell’s Howl of a Protest in July drew thousands of farmers and supporters driving tractors, utes and trucks to more than 50 towns and cities.

While a date in November is yet to be set, Groundswell NZ’s expectation is the next major protest action will be of a scale and impact that will be significant in New Zealand’s history, spokesman Bryce McKenzie said.

“There is widespread concern among both rural and urban people, councils, and the business sector about the direction the Govern-

ment is taking our country and the tsunami of unworkable regulations being rammed through,” McKenzie said.

In the lead up to November’s nationwide protest, some smaller scale campaign actions will be undertaken.

Under the banner of “can you hear us” on Friday at 12.30pm, Groundswell are calling for two minutes’ show of support by every car, bike, truck, train – anything with a horn, tooting in support of its campaign.

This will be repeated every Fri-

day for the following three weeks.

Groundswell NZ’s campaign is primarily concerned about the unworkable regulations including freshwater, indigenous biodiversity and climate change.

“We are not against the need for regulation or the need to care for the environment. Nor are we calling for a halt to addressing environmental issues,” McKenzie said.

“We are saying there are much better, proven solutions to addressing environmental issues than the one size fits all approach being legislated by the government.

“There are thousands of community and private environmental initiatives happening across the country and we believe everyone has a role to play to continue the momentum.”

Groundswell NZ has added the Three Waters reform and the Water Services Bill to its growing list of unworkable regulations.

Such is the magnitude of change being taken with the Three Waters reform, Groundswell NZ believe the people of New Zealand should have a say through referendums in each district and city.

Cultural tattoos A-OK in Ashburton Maddison Gourlay Ashburton College student Nick Tapurau says he’s privileged to go to a school that allows him to show off his deeply personal cultural and family tattoos.

Tapurau is one of a small number of students in the school that

have visible tattoos in what is becoming more accepted nationally in secondary schools.

The Year 11 student’s ta moko Maori tattoo was similar to his sister’s and father’s. He also has five Cook Island flowers as part of his tattoo to represent other family members and that side of his heritage.

“If I got told to cover them up, I would feel pretty disrespected,” Tapurau said.

toos on the face or body done under traditional protocols. The designs typically represent the wearer’s iwi (tribe) and whakapapa (ancestry).

Not all schools allow them to be visible on their students, but Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College in Methven do not share that view.

They appear to be leading the cultural tattoo way among secondary schools.

Ross Preece and Mount Hutt’s Jack Saxon, said they believed making this change for students to embrace their family and culture was a positive move for their schools.

“Students have to get permission from parents to get a tattoo,’’ Preece said.

“I am yet to talk to a student who has a visible tattoo that doesn’t have a big significance to them.”

Mount Hutt College’s protocol

for a tattoo was that it was allowed to be visible in the school uniform, but there had to be an exemption granted in the first place via the principal.

On one occasion, Saxon had a student apply for this exemption and even showed him designs and explained their meaning.

“I am yet to decline a student’s request because, at the age they are, they also need permission from caregivers,” Saxon said.

Footy flood-raiser tops $100,000 Jonathan Leask There is nothing unusual about farming representatives and politicians clashing.

But this time they went headto-head for the same cause with a Fonterra Selection tackling the Parliamentary team at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Sunday.

The game was held to raise money and support for Mid Canterbury and wider Canterbury farmers that have been affected by floods in May and June.

At fulltime the event had raised over $100,000 and arguably had a crowd to rival the Bledisloe Cup match in Auckland the night before with spectators packing the stand and sidelines.

There was $50,000 donated towards the Rural Support Trust while Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg and colleague Dale Stephens added $60,000 to the cause, raised through a Give A little campaign to raise funds for stock feed and seed product to reinstate flood damaged pasture.

“It was fantastic to be able to hand over the $60,000 myself and raised for stock feed and pasture seed to help local farms who’ve lost so much,” Grigg said.

Labour MP Kieran McAnulty received a yellow card, believed to be the first in the team’s history.

As well as the action on the

field, there were also milk drinking – with Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor getting involved, but choked while chugging, gumboot throwing challenge, and some valiant attempts to kick a ball into the back of a ute on the day.

Team Cam and Pine tackling the trans-Tasman Cobber Challenge Ashburton Gorge stock manager Cam Clayton will be clocking up the kilometres with his top heading dog Pine, one of his team of seven working dogs.

A trans-Taman challenge to identify the hardest working dog is under way, with Mid Canterbury stock manager Cam Clayton and his heading dog Pine already clocking up the kilometres.

Clayton’s dog is one of three New Zealand entries, competing with nine from throughout Australia in the challenge, which started on Monday.

For over three weeks the dogs will wear GPS collars to track the distance, duration and speed of their work.

“The Cobber Challenge is about recognising the hard work that these dogs put in and celebrating their enormous contribution to Australian and New Zealand farms,” Cobber’s marketing manager Kellie Savage said.

Clayton is a stock manager at 12,000-hectare Hakatere Station in the Ashburton Gorge which runs 800 angus cows and 10,500 halfbred ewes.

Pine is one of his team of seven working dogs.

The competition was being run at a quieter time of the year, with animals being set stocked in preparation for calving and lambing.

The other two New Zealand entrants are Peter Aitken and his heading dog Spark from Millers Flat in Central Otago and Josh Tosh and Trix from Dipton, Southland.

On the first day of the competition Aitken and Spark will be sorting up cows into their calving mobs on Limehills Station.

“It’s our chill time before everything gets hectic, but I think Spark will still ramp up the number of kilometres and do a fair amount of work because he likes to hog the work,” Aitken said.

Northern New South Wales kelpie-cross Buddy was last year’s winner and his owner Glenda Rogan is looking forward to seeing how this year’s competitors compare. Buddy set a new record, clocking 835km over the three-week competition.

Rogan has some practical tips for this year’s competitors: charge your GPS collar every night and plan your time.

“I didn’t book many social outings during the Cobber Challenge because if you’re fair dinkum about competing, you have to give it priority.”

Now in its sixth year, the 2021 Cobber Challenge runs from August 16 to September 5 with 12 dogs across the two countries giving it their all.

Each day of the competition, data is uploaded to the Cobber Challenge website so fans can follow the performance of their favourite dogs and national team.

For three weeks, the dogs will be scored based on distance, speed and duration of work per day with points accumulated based on daily activity to determine the winner of the Cobber Challenge trophy.

No confidence in Overseer oversight Heather Chalmers Farmers are being advised not to spend another cent on Overseer until it has been fixed.

The advice comes from Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ president David Clark after an independent review showed the software tool used to model and manage nutrient losses on farms was not fit for purpose.

The science advisory panel identified shortcomings with Overseer and concluded that it did not have confidence in its ability to estimate nitrogen lost from farms.

This is despite it being a key tool used by regional councils including Environment Canterbury for setting on-farm nitrogen-loss limits, particularly in environmentally at-risk catchments such as Hinds and Selwyn-Waihora.

“Farmers should not be forced to spend another dollar on this broken system. Overseer is being used for what it was never designed to do,” Clark said.

“Farmers have been telling the Ministry for Primary Industries, Ministry for the Environment and regional councils this for 10 years and they didn’t want to listen. The Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan consenting and auditing process is built around Overseer, so this is a massive problem that needs to be sorted.

“My advice for farmers is do not use Overseer for land use consent auditing. We have already collectively tipped more than enough money down the drain through this process.”

Clark said his own Valetta family mixed cropping farm had spent tens of thousands of dollars meeting its Overseer obligations which had been “an utter waste of money”.

“It is appalling that central and regional government have been prepared to hold their nose and look the other way on this issue for years.

“It is important for our consenting, compliance monitoring and enforcement, and farm environment plan auditing processes.

“Our Resource Management Act plans and consents use Overseer – together with farm environment plans and independent audit – to maintain or improve water quality by minimising nitrate-nitrogen losses.

“We now need to take the time to consider the review so we can be clear about how these processes may be impacted.

We welcome the Government’s commitment to continue to support Overseer while it looks into providing upgraded and/or next-generation tools over the next 12 months,” Rixecker said.

Environment Minister David Parker and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said that as it was essential that farmers and councils using Overseer had some certainty on how to proceed, the Government would support the development of a next generation Overseer and other nutrient management tools.

“Options to be considered include developing a risk-based index, developing a next-generation Overseer to address the panel’s concerns, greater use of controls on practices to manage nitrogen leaching, and potentially longer-term developing a new approach altogether,” the ministers said.

Quad bikes must be regularly serviced

WorkSafe is reminding businesses that regular servicing and maintenance of quad bikes can save lives.

The reminder comes after the sentencing of two businesses in Timaru District Court on August 5.

Dairy Holdings Limited (DHL) and Coryston Limited were sentenced under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 following the death of their employee in September 2019.

The employee, Stacey Rodgers, died as a result of crushing injuries that occurred during a quad bike roll-over on a farm in the Waimate District.

A WorkSafe investigation found that the condition of the quad bike was consistent with an ATV that had been in regular use, but had not been serviced for a prolonged period.

The quad bike’s brakes, steering, suspension and front bull bar/bumper were all in need of servicing/repair. The investigation concluded that the quad bike was not fit for use in a farming environment as it was in need of mechanical repair.

“This is another tragic reminder that farm vehicles such as quad bikes must be regularly serviced and adequately maintained,” area investigation manager Steve Kelly said.

On average, five people die in work related quad bike accidents each year and many more are injured. Most quad bike injuries and fatalities are caused by the quad bike rolling over.

ACC offers a cash-back offer on CPDs, and WorkSafe urges operators to take advantage of the offer.

“A CPD is a simple and valuable way of keeping users safe,” Kelly said.

“While the companies had purchased a CPD for the quad bike involved, this was not installed at the time of the accident.”

Community goodwill at its best

ell done to all those involved in the Fonterra-led fundraising rugby clash in Ashburton on Sunday.

The game, organised to raise money and show support for Mid Canterbury and wider Canterbury farmers affected by floods in May and June, was a big success.

Fans of all ages turned up, families enjoyed the atmosphere and the free Fonterra goodies, including hot dogs and meat patties from the barbecue. Oh, and a rugby game of sorts took place when a Fonterra selection, coached by Scott Roberston of Crusaders’ fame, beat a Parliamentary XV, 51-10.

Former star players, including All Blacks Aaron Mauger and Casey Laulala, and Temuka-raised Highlander Brendan Laney, showed some of their skills from their playing days were still there, even if their

Daryl Holden fitness and aerobic capacity may not have been. Thank goodness for the rolling subs in a runaround reduced to four quarters.

But rugby was really a side dish on a spring-like afternoon because this was all about community support.

Yes, it may have been an obvious branding and marketing day out for Fonterra, with helpers and staff wherever you looked clad in company sweatshirts for all to see, but no-one should grumble about that.

Not only did they make the event happen, but they also made a $50,000 donation to

the Rural Support Trust to go to farmers in need. And the good donation news didn’t stop there, with another $60,000 raised and presented after the game for stock feed and pasture seed courtesy of a Givealittle page organised by National MP Nicola Grigg.

Christchurch’s new multi-use stadium just up the road would now have a 30,000-seat capacity should be thanking Robert Hough.

Robert who? Yep, fair question.

Hough was the guy, who in a matter of a few days, organised a petition signed by 24,000 people

to try and ensure the stadium would cater for 30,000 fans to be big enough to bring top-tier rugby tests to Christchurch after the original plan was for it to accommodate only 25,000 spectators.

Rugby-mad Hough, of course, wasn’t the sole reason why the

Christchurch City Council bowed to public pressure and ditched its earlier decision to build a smaller 25,000-seat venue.

But he was the man who passionately began the extra push and created some momentum for change that, in the end, overwhelmed the previously entrenched views of most of the city councillors.

The larger stadium would cost an additional $50 million, lifting the total budget to $523m. Nevertheless, the right decision appears to have been reached for a venue that’ll give the South Island two world class multi-purpose facilities, with Christchurch’s to go alongside the already hugely successful Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

And for those of us in Mid Canterbury, we’re close enough to enjoy both high-class venues.

And that has to be a good thing.

Cultural tattoos accepted under school uniform code Secondary schools are amending uniform policies, allowing students to wear traditional ta moko tattoos. Ta moko are cultural tattoos on the face or body and done under traditional protocols.

The designs typically represent the wearer’s tribe and ancestry.

Mount Hutt and Ashburton College already allow students to have cultural tattoos visible under agreement with the school (See story Page 5).

We asked our Facebook followers what they thought of cultural tattoos being allowed to be seen on students at school.

Here’s a few of the views.

Marie Riwai-Faoagali Maeva: Absolutely my girl has one and she excels academically so if it doesn’t impact learning

shouldn’t be an issue.

Deborah Lysaght: I don’t care what kids look like in their uniform as long as they’re emotionally happy and confident.

Harmony Marie Mo’ale: Yes 100% it should all be part of being inclusive of everybody ... including their culture.

Stu McConchie: We are the most heavily tattooed country on the planet per capita. All my kids have ink not cultural though never had an issue with them at school. All tattooed by their mother at 16 they have grown up in the tattoo industry most of their lives. As long as it’s in good taste and respectful I don’t see an issue for anyone getting ink at school. Cultural or not.

Carolyn Lee: Yes, why not it’s

tribal/cultural tattoos are expected now days, so why shouldn’t schools be the same.

Schools are meant to prepare you for the “real world”.

Huia Crawford: If it’s part of their culture and they have whanau consent what organisation has the right to take that away from them? I’m a teacher here in Ashburton and my leg has ta moko from top to bottom and also on my arms are schools going to reconsider hiring me because of my ta moko? Is ta moko the issue or is it age? or is it who makes decisions for our rangatahi when it comes to their cultural rights?

Cindy Gebbie: Their bodies, their choice. As long as it’s not offensive why worry!! There’s far more things to be concerned about in the schools

than this . . . leave things as they are.

Nathan Speedy: I don’t see why not, as long as it’s for all cultures. Would someone be allowed a tattoo with their family’s coat of arms?

Lisa KauKau: Yes . . . It doesn’t hinder their ability to learn.

Billie Holden: Any tattoos. As long as they’re tasteful and not obscene why not let all kids express themselves?

Brenton John Robinson Wise: Let tattoos be to whoever wants them there are more concerning things that go on at schools that need to be addressed a lot of tattoos have meaning than because they can look good or cool.

Karen Smollett: Given how lenient workplaces are on tattoos and piercings, yes.

The councils were given this

proposed direction 12 months ago along with a financial carrot to encourage them to abdicate their responsibility of water management locally to a huge central body.

Also transfer ownership (council) community assets.

Govt is offering $16.75 million to transfer these assets. This is a diabolical insult, it is worse than that, it is theft.

Drinking water, storm water, waste water are the core services of Local Govt.

Council sort it out quickly and

get on with your responsibility of running an efficient business.

Space does not permit me to expand on issues. Briefly, have people forgotten the Govt in the early 1990s intended to remove council management of roads and nationalise NZ roads.

Remember in the early 1990s our hospital services were going to be reduced dramatically due to Govt centralising policy.

If council steps aside on this issue planning management will be the next to be centralised.

Defending fortress Methven Matt Markham One more week, one more victory – that’s all it will take for the Methven senior football side.

In their first foray into Mainland Football’s Division One competition, the Methven side have made every post a winner this season and a 9-4 victory on Saturday against Universities has put them within one win of securing the league title.

They’ll head to Halswell this weekend for the penultimate round of the Division One league with victory enough to put them far enough clear to not be caught with one week remaining.

On Saturday, they were again dominant, but disappointed too to allow Universities into the match with four goals – an anomaly they’ll be keen to fix when they get back on the turf this weekend.

Halswell currently sit in third on the competition’s standings, so the task won’t be easy.

Saturday’s win also capped a remarkable feat for the side who haven’t tasted defeat at the Methven Domain all season, with their next two matches away from home.

While the Methven side celebrated, it was a tough end to the season for the Mid Canterbury United Senior side in the New World Cham-

pionship, as they fell to St Albans Shirley on Saturday afternoon 3-2.

It’s been an up and down season for the team who have shown plenty of promise and delivered some excellent results but have also at times struggled against the might of some of the Christchurch based sides.

The Reserves team also suffered a tough loss on the weekend, losing to Western 1-3.

It was happier times for the undefeated 15th grade side though who claimed a big victory in their clash with Nomads at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday morning.

In fresh conditions, the side ran hot scoring five first half goals to put the match beyond doubt at the half-time break.

They added another five in the second, but also leaked two late goals – but it was too little too late for the Nomads side.

Goal-scoring dynamo Elliot Ward grabbed four goals for the match, with both Kinglsey Olawale and Lachie Gardner grabbing braces, while Donnie Ross and Logan Scammell scored the others.

On Sunday, the Mid Canterbury United Women’s side kept their chances of glory in the late stage of the season alive with a 3-0 win over Universities.

The side are now on top of the standings in the pool section of the competition, with a big match this week against the Halswell United Honeys in Ashburton.

Morrison grabs 200th winner Matt Markham Another week, another magic moment for a young Mid Canterbury harness racing star.

John Morrison notched up the 200th win of his fledgling driving career at Addington on Friday night, continuing an impressive start for the former Ashburton College student as he transitions from the junior ranks into that of a senior horseman.

Morrison – a three-time premiership winning driver – has broken into the senior ranks this season and has, thus far, made every post a winner, grabbing six winners in the first couple of weeks to see him sit third early doors on the open premiership behind Blair Orange and John Dunn.

He claimed two winners last week in different parts of the South Island, with Brigadiers Son winning at Wyndham on Thursday, before Tiger Taylor grabbed him his 200th success in the sulky at Addington Friday night.

Morrison gave the Dean Taylor-trained hot-pot every chance late in the night on Friday, and dashed up the passing lane to win impressively.

From 32 drives in the new stage of the season, Morrison has grabbed six winners and five minor placings – underlining that he’s going to have no problem

John Morrison brought home win number 200 on Friday. in the transition from the junior driver ranks to the senior set-up.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, local trainer John Hay played his part in a memorable debut into the driving ranks for young Carter Dalgety, when Adieu Flirt dead-heated for success in the junior drivers’ event late in the day.

Hay has produced Adieu Flirt – who began its career in Mid Canterbury with Graham Bond, before heading north – to win twice from as many starts from

his barn, although Sunday’s effort was a shared victory.

Dalgety, who is the son of leading trainers Cran and Chrissie Dalgety, produced a heady drive on the speedy pacer, letting it all unfold in front of him before unleashing late to hit the line locked together with Five Star General.

The win moved Hay to 592 career training wins, and to within striking distance of 600.

His other starter on Sunday, Yossi, produced an excellent run fresh-up to finish third in a hotly

contested Kurow Cup with Ricky May finishing second on hot favourite Di Caprio.

The race was won by the Brad Mowbray-trained I’m Tough.

There were plenty of happy locals after the first race on Sunday, when maiden trotter Shiffty broke through for success.

The Gavin Smith trained trotter is part-owned by the We’ve Got The Trots Syndicate, which is made up of Mid Canterbury enthusiasts who race horses in all three codes of racing.

Tallyho Twinkletoe wrote his name into Australasian jumping folklore as he took out the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Grand National Steeplechase (5600m) at Riccarton Park on Saturday afternoon. The Kevin Myerstrained eleven-year-old became the first horse to complete the New Zealand and Australian Grand National Hurdle and Steeplechase double as he completed his eleventh victory from 15 starts over fences.

Races this week The Ashburton Trotting Club will kickstart their new racing season with a new meeting on the calendar this Sunday. The club lobbied Harness Racing New Zealand hard to gain some additional meetings for the new season and this Sunday’s winter meeting was one of the successful grabs for the club.

A nine-race card has been tentatively programmed for the meeting which gets under way around 12 noon on Sunday.

Shoot-out success leads to finals berth for Mid Canterbury Matt Markham Talk about heart in the mouth kind of stuff.

The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s Hockey side will shoot for glory in Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition this weekend after a shootout was required to split them and the table-topping Redcliffs side in the semi-final.

In their first season back in the Canterbury-wide competition, the Mid Canterbury side have turned more than the odd head along the way, and Saturday’s victory, albeit in tough circumstances, will have sent a warning ahead of this week’s final with Southern United at Nga Puna Wai. Up against some inclement weather on the weekend, Mid Canterbury went into the match as the underdogs – after only being invited into the competition to help negate a bye round before the season even started.

The match started off well enough, and the green-andgold boys had plenty of pressure stacked on their rivals but were unable to come up with a goal to

Down the other end a bit of clumsy defence led to a penalty stroke for the Redcliffs side, and they took the lead 1-nil with five

minutes left in the first quarter.

That action resulted in a reaction from Mid Canterbury, and after a sprawling save from a Redcliffs penalty corner attempt

by Jacob Gray, they marched back up field and a sliding Hayden Sinclair brought the scores back to level to end the quarter.

Mid Canterbury kicked off back where they started in the second and after a good string of play an Andy Moore feed into the circle found the stick of Sinclair who, as he has been all season, was in the right place and he pushed it past the keeper to give his side the lead.

Redcliffs attempted to react and got back down into the Mid Canterbury goal quickly, but again Gray was up to the task and made some great saves to deny them a goal, and quickly the ball was moved down turf where Sinclair laid in wait.

He put on a little masterclass again and grabbed his third for the match, and all of a sudden, the dream of a final became a reality as Mid Canterbury led 3-1.

The final quarter saw Mid Canterbury doing all they could to keep out the Redcliffs attack, but a deflected shot brought the game to within one, and then they grabbed their third to bring

the scores to level again where they remained until the final whistle.

The first round of penalty shootout went without drama as both sides converted each attempt forcing sudden death action.

Positive signs from effort at South Island championships Matt Markham The Mid Canterbury Senior netball side have capped off their representative season with a strong showing for fourth, at the South Island Senior Championships on the weekend.

Playing in Dunedin across both Saturday and Sunday, the team produced some excellent netball against quality sides throughout the course of the tournament and finished second in their pool.

They kicked off their campaign with a strong win over Hanan Shield rivals, North Otago in which they won 31-25 in an excellent team performance.

The competition included two invitational sides, one in each pool, and Mid Canterbury took them on in the second game but were outsmarted

26-50. Despite the loss however, there were plenty of encouraging signs with some excellent mid-court play which put the side in a good position for their remaining matches.

A third-round clash with the homebased side Dunedin proved a tough ask for the Mid Canterbury ladies though, and they had to settle for a second loss, going down 19-48.

Their pool points however did enough to see them advance as the second placed team in the pool, and set up a match with their other Hanan Shield rivals, South Canterbury, on Sunday.

At the Hanan Shield earlier in the month, South Canterbury were too strong for the Mid Canterbury ladies, winning 45-38, but with some key learnings under their belt and more experience the tables nearly turned on the weekend.

Mid Canterbury fought hard for the entire match, but were unable to hold their rivals off, losing 32-34 in a gripping match underlining the progress the side has made throughout their campaign, which has seen a lot of new faces introduced to the representative scene.

The result was enough to see Mid Canterbury place fourth overall at the tournament.

For many players it’s back to work this week though, with the semi-finals of Mid Canterbury Netball’s Premier competition being held on Thursday night, where Hampstead take on Southern and Methven and Celtic lock horns in the other playoff match in Premier 1.

$2000 raised from Alumni clash Basketball was the clear winner on the day when fundraising took centre stage at the Oxford Street Basketball stadium on Saturday night. The big fundraising event for the year saw this season’s Ashburton College Boys’ side take on a selected team of alumni from throughout the ages in front of a huge crowd of supporters and fans. The match was attended by close to 200 people, who filled the Oxford Street Stadium to cheer on both sides, with close to $2000 raised from the occasion. Key lessons in defeat Matt Markham Sometimes it takes a good oldfashioned hiding to expose one’s own frailties.

But the key is how you respond to that instance – how you fight back and how you lift yourself off the canvas and be better for next time.

No sporting side likes to lose, but losing a pre-season match isn’t as important as losing one when the season proper is under way, so the Mid Canterbury senior rugby side have an opportunity to learn from their own errors and correct this week as they prepare for the opening round of the Heartland Rugby season.

They were thumped by a very good Canterbury B side on Saturday afternoon at the Ashburton Showgrounds 52-27.

But the score only tells one half of the story, as Mid Canterbury came from 5-38 down at half-time to score 22 unanswered points in the second half – which was enough to allow co-coach Dale Palmer a small smile when the final whistle blew.

“It’s not the result we wanted, no.

“But, in the same breath it might actually be exactly what we

needed ahead of the competition getting under way,” he said.

“I think it’s really hammered home to a lot of these guys just how tough it’s going to be compared to the club season – just

The opening 40 minutes of the match was a tough-watch for Palmer, Jason Rickard and Sean Cuttance, as well as the decent-sized crowd who had come along to watch the match.

Canterbury B ran in six impressive and easy tries to stun Mid Canterbury in the opening half – with only a try to Raitube Vasurakuta helping stem the flow.

Palmer put the first 40 minutes down to one simple, over-riding, mistake from his side.

“We didn’t want it enough, and I think we might have walked out onto the paddock with the wrong mindset, and it showed,” he said.

“There was a pretty clear message handed down at half-time, but the pleasing thing was the way they responded, that second

40 minutes is a lot more like the brand of rugby we are out to play this year and it showed what we are capable of.”

The talking to seemingly worked, as from the outset of the second half, the pendulum swung back in favour of the home side.

Mid Canterbury became the side to dominate possession and slowly but surely, they edged their way up the field and turned territory into points.

With the home side using bigball runners and defending like soldiers in the trenches, Canterbury B were the stunned mullets who were unable to make inroads.

Vasurakuta scored his second shortly after the break, then Tait Chisman latched onto an intercept to run 70 metres for the second a few minutes later.

red and black defenders, and replacement back Isireli Masiwini grabbed Mid Canterbury’s fourth and all of a sudden, at 27-38 – the home side were back in the match with 15 minutes to play.

Two late tries to Canterbury B blew the score out, but for Palmer the lessons learned will be even more valuable than if the side had got up to win in the final stages of the game.

“Canterbury showed us the level we need to be at, and they also showed us just how important it is to play the entire 80 minutes of the match too.

“We will take plenty out of the match.

“Not all games are going to be that tough – but it’s a good message to get to the boys that it’s not as simple as going out onto the paddock and winning.”

Again it was the green and gold power players who set the tone when things finally did happen.

Seta Koroitamana, who captained the side, was inspirational with the ball in hand and others like him, Manasa Bari, Lote Nasiga and Nick Foxley followed his lead.

Flanker Osian Davies looks to be a great find too.

He stalks the ball like a hunter in the hills and strikes when the opportunity arises, and created plenty of problems at the breakdown for Canterbury, and was also very good when given the chance to stretch his legs.

Mid Canterbury will turn their focus to Thames Valley this week in the opening round of the Heartland Rugby Competition.

They’ll fly to Hamilton on Friday to be a part of the Waikato Rugby Club’s 100th celebrations, with the match broadcast on Sky Sport at 11.35am on Saturday morning.
