The Ashburton Trotting Club is at risk of losing its hosting rights of the big ticket Harness Jewels to Addington Raceway, a loss that would carve hundreds of thousands of dollars out of the district’s economy.

Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) chief executive Edward Rennell confirmed that an application to hold the 2019 Jewels had been lodged by Addington, but said no decision had been made.

“They’ve applied so we have to look at it,” he said.

No one was questioning the job Ashburton had done, but the board had to be open to reviewing the event and doing whatever was in the best interests of the industry, Rennell said.

Ashburton has made this event what it is,” he said.

It wasn’t until the Jewels was a proven success that the two metro centres were interested. The idea was for an event that would showcase top horses over a mile and there were only two tracks that had the ability to do that, Ashburton and Cambridge, Harrison said.

If the Jewels went to Addington and Auckland, the mile concept would be lost as neither track could hold successful races over that distance, and that meant the event would change completely, he said.

“I think if they change the concept and change the regionalisation it will be the death of the event.”

Ashburton became aware that its tenure of Jewels day could be in doubt late last year when there was a virtual cone of silence from the board over next year’s event.

“When nothing came out after the December board meeting about the Jewels we smelled a rat.

Normally we’d have an indication after that. We had a gut feeling and now we’ve had formal notification Addington will be making a bid.”

Addington should be in no

doubt that Ashburton would be making a very strong bid of its own and it wouldn’t give the event up without a fight, Harrison said.

and a big event for the town. It’s a purists’ event that attracts people who are keen to see top horses racing on a top track.”

The event wasn’t always a moneymaker for the club, but it was big for the district and it had a huge role to play in lifting the club’s profile and its status in the industry, he said.

“I don’t believe we’ve done anything wrong in running this and we’ll be fighting it to the end.”

The club was concerned that when the HRNZ board voted, board affiliation would be weighted against the provincial clubs.

“We’ve canvassed it and it could be 50/50 but it will be a majority decision.”

The first Harness Jewels was held in 2007 at Ashburton, with Cambridge staging the event in alternate years.

A decision on the 2019 host would be made at the HRNZ board’s April 28 meeting.

Ashburton’s association with the Harness Jewels was born in July 2006 when it was awarded the inaugural event, billed as a $1.5 million champion of champions meeting to be held at Queens Birthday weekend the following year.

The meeting was described as the Kiwi answer to the United States Little Brown Jug day or the Breeders’ Crown day in Australia.

It was designed to pit top horses across nine age groups head-tohead over what would be the richest nett stakes race day in New Zealand.

Ashburton Trotting Club president at the time, the late John Rollinson, described it as a major coup for the district.

“It’s a huge vote of confidence in the Ashburton club and the industry locally. It’s colossal,” he said.

The event offered six races with stakes of $200,000 each and three with $100,000 each.

At the heart of the event was that it was a mile race and that horses would compete over the season to become the highest stake winners in their age group to make the top 12.

Significant factors that contributed to Ashburton being chosen

by Harness Racing New Zealand as host were its first class mile track and the centre’s appeal as a heartland racing centre to sponsor Century Foundation.

Ashburton has hosted the Jewels in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Each year the course has been packed with spectators in marquees and in the stands.

In brief Hunter rescued A man who injured his leg after falling down a steep slope while hunting in the hills near Brightwater used his cellphone to call for help and give instructions to a rescue helicopter crew looking for him. The 54-year-old Richmond man fell down the steep forestry block in Eves Valley, near Nelson, yesterday and was unable to move. He used his phone to call for help and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was sent.

The man was lying in dense undergrowth and pines on a steep slope but the helicopter crew were able to find him by talking to him on his cellphone, the helicopter operator said.

Farewell to favourite librarian

Ambling across the Hampstead School asphalt with Francie Prichard at morning tea, it’s difficult to negotiate past all the children running up to hug her.

“In the past week, I’ve received enough hugs to take me to Pluto and back,” she said, beaming.

This week, the beloved school librarian bid goodbye to what she calls the “best kids in New Zealand,” and her “dream job”, after an awe-inspiring 24 years.

It’s been a delightful, varied and interesting journey she said, “And every one of those 24 years has been enjoyable.”

But now the time has come to spend a little more time with her family and naturally a good deal of reading material.

Brought up with books, Prich-

ard said her love of reading began early. After volunteering for the Ashburton College library and the Hampstead library, she shifted into a permanent position in a library in an ex-classroom space at Hampstead.

Three library spaces later, having moved from manual cataloguing to computerised “zapping” and having watched Hampstead grow by six classrooms, it’s clear Prichard has become a cherished piece of the school community.

As well as being the school librarian, she works as a part time new entrant teacher aide and a dedicated PTA supporter with a renowned knack for cheese rolls.

The job of librarian itself entails much more background work than simply issuing and shelving, she said – researching books, preparing reading mate-

rial for classes, working to help children find their reading niche, making purchases from visiting booksellers and local stores, and naturally, reading what she purchases.

“I read all the books I buy, even as an adult.”

All in all, the job is what Prichard imagines to have been “one of the best jobs in the world”. But the highlight of it has been the children.

“When I look around here, it feels like they’re all my extended children. Hampstead has a great feel. It’s just the best playground to be around.

“I’m definitely going to miss them, the children.”

Nine people are injured, two seriously, after a crash involving multiple cars near Matamata.

The road has now reopened after the crash at the intersection of State Highway 29 and Hopkins Road. Police said three cars were involved in the crash, while St John said five cars. There were nine people treated for injuries, two were attended to on site, one was transported to hospital by air in a serious condition, another in serious condition was transported by ambulance. Two with moderate injuries and three with minor injuries were also transported.

Second child dies

Hampstead, and has two grandchildren currently attending.

Last Tuesday, it was time for those 350-odd children to show their love to Mrs Prichard. At a leaving assembly, she was guided to her own specially decorated chair and showered in gratitude.

“Staff and students presented her with a bouquet and booklet signed by every student, sang her the National Anthem, the Duffy Song and gave her a rousing three cheers,” said Hampstead Principal Peter Melrose.

In return, Prichard shared her gratitude to the children and gave one last reminder that “reading helps you all your life”.

And it likely won’t be the last time she sets foot on school grounds, she said.

“I’ll make a few visits, I’m sure.

I won’t be able to stay away!”

A second child has died after a crash on the Desert Road, north of Waiouru on Good Friday. Police said the crash involved two cars and two truck and trailer units.

Senior Sergeant Fane Troy, Bay of Plenty Road Policing, said one child died at the scene. The second child died in Starship Hospital yesterday as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Troy said.

Another person involved in the crash remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.

Local support for heli-pad appeal

An appeal to raise money for a rooftop helipad at Christchurch Hospital has touched the hearts of the people of Mid Canterbury.

Four weeks ago the Maia Health Foundation set itself and the people of the Canterbury the challenge of raising $500,000 for the appeal. Every dollar the foundation raised will be matched by the Rata Foundation.

With just 18 days to go, the appeal has passed the mid-way mark, said Maia chief executive Michael Flatman and in raising that money, the Ashburton District had played a major role.

“Mid Canterbury has been absolutely outstanding in donating; 70-75 per cent of the money we’ve received has come from this district.”

And yesterday the district provided another donation through the district’s Kidney Society. It was a donation with a special edge, given in memory of a member who died in October last year.

Through the society Ngaio and Graham McKee donated $1000 to the appeal as a memorial to their son Jeff, a kidney transplant recipient.

Jeff received a new kidney in 2004 and enjoyed eight or nine years of good health postransplant, his mother Ngaio said.

Through his illness the family spent many

hours in Christchurch Hospital and could not fault the care provided, his father Graham said.

“There was nothing they didn’t do for him.”

That premium care meant the family was keen to do whatever they could to ensure people from rural areas had the best and fastest access possible to Christchurch Hospital services, he said.

Among the many donations that have come from the Ashburton District, the largest to date has been a $150,000 gift from the Mckenzie Charitable Foundation.

When it came to donations, it didn’t matter how big or how small, every dollar counted, Flatman said.

“Whatever we’re given is so very much appreciated.”

What medical emergencies all had in common was the need for fast access to care, he said, because every minute lost could result in a less favourable outcome for a patient, he said.

“It’s all about timing. So many increments in time you can’t do anything about; this one we can.”

Currently it takes 13 minutes on average to transfer a patient from the heli-pad in Hagley Park to Christchurch Hospital. A roof-top heli-pad with immediate access to care would reduce this transfer time to almost nothing.

The Ashburton District Council is offering dog owners an opportunity to make unregistered dogs legal without paying a late registration penalty or a fine.

Along with the dog registration amnesty the council will also be offering dog owners a chance to have their dogs microchipped for free.

Registration on amnesty day will make tardy dog owners legal dog owners until June 30.

Urban dog owners will pay just $18.50 for that three-month registration and rural owners and owners of de-sexed dogs just $12. A vet certificate will be required as proof of de-sexing.

Council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said the finefree day would help dog owners avoid a

penalty of $300 if they were caught with an unregistered dog.

“We have many responsible dog owners in our district who microchip and make sure their dogs are registered each year, but unfortunately there are others who don’t. We want to give these people the opportunity to get their dogs’ microchip and registration sorted without the concern of incurring a late fee; this is your chance to avoid those costs,” she said.

The SPCA will be working with the council’s animal control services on the day helping to microchip dogs and answering any questions owners may have.

In the 2016/17 year, there were 6530 dogs registered in the Ashburton District.

The amnesty day will be held at the Ashburton Dog Shelter at 19 Range Street in the Riverside Industrial Estate between 9am and 3pm on April 7.

Holly wins emergency services encore for school

The thrills of Ashburton’s Emergency Services Day will be recreated at Tinwald School in November, all for one lucky competition winner and her classmates.

Holly Esler was selected as the winner of a colouring in competition during the first ever Emergency Services Day on March 3 and as her prize, wins a mini Emergency Services Day on her school grounds later this year.

St John Ambulance Officer Andrew Beckley said the day will be complete with offerings from all the volunteer groups and of course, the search dogs.

“Holly was pretty chuffed to win it,” he said.

During the first Emergency Services Day, children were invited to complete colouring in pictures and pop them into a draw at the entrance to the event.

Different groups competing in the event’s combat challenge were asked to pick a colouring in picture out of the box, and the winning team’s chosen picture would in turn become the winning picture.

That winning team was Ashburton Fire and Emergency and their picture belonged to Ester.

Beckley said it was important for emergency services be involved with children – including those who wanted to be a firefighter or a police officer.

“They’re the future. They’re the ones who are going to take us to hospital, or arrest us because we’ve been drink driving, or put our house out when it’s on fire.”

He said the mini event in November would also act as a nice lead-up to next year’s Emergency Services Day.

MULTICULTURAL MONTH

M

arch had been a very multicultural month, with multiple events in our region celebrating different cultures.

The month opened with Japan Day in Christchurch, featuring Sumo wrestling, Japanese musical instruments, traditional tea ceremony, cosplay (costumes) show, anime (animated shows) room dedicate to the hit series “Full Metal Alchemist”, Origami (paper folding art), Japanese calligraphy and more. You can read more about it in Chiyo Hunt’s column about the event.

The next weekend featured not one but two multi-cultural events in Christchurch: The first being “Cultural Galore”, and was similar to our own Multi-Cultural Bite event. Food stalls containing food from around the world, ethnic shows on the stage, and also multiple activities to entertain the young ones.

Later that evening the Christchurch Lantern Festival opened, showcasing the Chinese culture, and you can read all about it in detail.

Another event in Christchurch focused on the Indian Holi festival – festival of colours. This traditional and ancient Indian holiday originates from folk stories, passed down through generations. Each region in India celebrates in its own way but Holi is widely recognised as a day to forgive, look ahead and celebrate with colours as a community. Participants get packets of coloured powder and throw them at each other. Holi celebrates the beginning of Spring.

And finally we had a local event, as Mount Hutt College (led by Mrs Jo Brennan) arranged Cultural Diversity Evening featuring Chinese artists decorated paper plates (which the event participants created), Japanese games, Henna hand painting by the Ashburton Indian Multicultural Charitable Trust and additional stalls. There were also performances of Bagpipes, Highland dancing, Tae Kwon do group, Chinese folk fan dance, the Ashburton Pacifica group and also a dance by visiting students from the Shukutoku Gakuen Girls

Another unique attraction was the food stalls themselves, ranging from Dutch and Romanian to Canadian and Filipino dishes, and were made and sold by the students themselves. The students also prepared informative displays on festivals around the world (such as the Chinese lantern festival or the Indian Holi festival), short movies about history of some of these festivals

(created and narrated by the students themselves) and activity stations for younger children. It was very impressive and exciting to see such student participation and seeing them display their family’s traditions proudly.

I’m looking forward to seeing (and possibly helping organise) more cultural diversity events around Mid Canterbury and Ashburton.

t is like a concentration of Japanese food, culture and history for kids, youth and adults.

It is for Japanese people and anyone from any other country too, of course.

The moment I entered the event the atmosphere surrounding me changed all of a sudden. I saw a sea of people, I heard highspirited voices and noises and I even felt the temperature rise, it’s a genuine festival. A Japanese festival.

It’s all up to you how you spend time here. You can queue up to taste Japanese cuisine from many stalls, watch Japanese drum concerts and/or dance performances, join the Sumo competition, experience some cultural traditions, play games with/without kids, or just relax on the grass or in the café.

After having trouble finding a car park I rushed to see my daughter Chinatsu in a dance group. It was a dynamic and energetic performance, reminded me of good Japanese spirits.

I was so proud of her to be involved in it. Watching the Japanese Drum Group Takumi’s performance always gives me a great feeling about my home country.

I was so deeply engulfed in their performance, I couldn’t see or hear anything else during it and I could feel the sound right thought me.

Another thing I was looking for

on this day was food, of course.

I went round and round all the stalls at least twice because I couldn’t tell what my stomach was wanting, too many choices!!

Deep fried chicken, donburi, okonomiyaki? No, I can cook them! Noodles? Seems like a great choice but I didn’t feel like joining a long queue, I’ve lived in New Zealand for too long. Also the sun was shining too strong to have hot noodles.

After a big discussion with myself I bought a whole baked squid with mouth watering sauce.

It was good, truly good.

Satisfied with the great food, I found a shiatsu stall which was even better.

This time without any hesitation I lined up in a queue for a 5 minute shoulder massage. It was heaven!!

I put his business card in my bag and promised myself I would get a whole hour massage as a treat for myself one day soon.

I saw my husband Colin and son Kyosuke munching on yummy looking food so I just had to pinch some. It was delicious.

Deep fried squid! Oh squid again!!

This is a very popular annual event, the 7th year this time; it attracts thousands of people, this year 16,500 in total.

We will be definitely going back next year to taste and experience my homeland, in Christchurch.

CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL

T

he Lantern Festival has been part of Chinese New Year celebrations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC- 221 AD).

Usually held on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, it marks the end of New Year festivities, celebrating the Year of the Dog for 2018.

It is said that the holiday evolved from an ancient Chinese belief that celestial spirits could be seen flying about in the light of the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

People used torches and eventually lanterns of every shape, size and colour to aid them in spotting the spirits.

The Chinese Lantern Festival is more than just lanterns, fireworks are also often lit, riddles are written on lanterns and rice glue balls are consumed all in the name of tradition.

This practice stems back from the Eastern Han Dynasty, which has had an influence on the beginnings of Buddhism within China. Monks would light up these lanterns to respect Buddha on January 15.

Emperors of that dynasty honoured that convention and had the determination to promote Buddhism to all. How it then become a public celebration is due to the ordering of communities to

hang the lanterns on temples and palaces on the night, again out of respect to Buddha himself.

From this civilian request arose the public festival known as the Chinese Lantern Festival.

This had been the festival’s 12th year in Christchurch, with crowds in the tens of thousands. This year also marked a move from Hagley Park to the banks of the Avon river and the Christchurch CBD (including the cathedral square). This resulted in criticism from some of the attendees regarding having difficulty moving around, especially with strollers or wheelchairs.

Personally I found the location charming, especially in the ways the river was incorporated into the festivities, such as a huge lantern of a water dragon or putting one of the stages on one side of the river with the crowds watching from the other side. I also liked seeing central locations like the Cathedral square being used for the event.

In additional to the dozens of food stalls offering every possible and imaginable dish and the endless queues these stalls attracted, the CBD location also allowed revelers to buy food from local restaurants, and there were many of those!

As a family we enjoyed the

shadow puppet tales at the smaller stage (the one located on the river), and then were amazed to see the performance of talented children musicians.

We then moved on to see the lanterns – paper statues and displays that lit up as it got darker.

From dragons, through Hong Kong and Antarctica displays, to

large insects, wild animals, giant frogs and panda bear – the wonders were endless.

By the square we enjoyed performances on the main stage seeing dragon dancers (there was also a dragon dance groups going through festival, with several people operating the “dragon”) and the various artists. One artist

demonstrated the creation of animals and shapes from dough while another created intricately detailed lollipops by dribbling melted sugar.

This was, by far, the biggest and most impressive cultural event I have been at, and I’m looking forward to being there next year.

RECYCLE, REUSE, CREATE RAPPORT

T

he Newcomers dinner party this month was graciously hosted by the Ashburton Wastebusters Trust.

The Wastebusters store is a hidden gem in Ashburton – if you haven’t been there yet you should definitely visit. It’s a huge store filled with second hand goods from all kinds and sizes, as well as some unique art pieces made from recycled materials.

They were our hosts for last Friday’s dinner party, with the Wastebusters manager, Sharon Breakwell, giving us a fascinating talk and a tour of the place.

Wastebusters is a communityborn organisation that was established in 1994 with the goal of diverting waste from the landfill by the means of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling and working towards the ultimate goal of Zero Waste. Today that goal remains the same, and they offer school education, community education, on farm rural recycling and

operate a bargain filled Reuse Shop. They are the only recycling operation fully supported by the community. They also operate a new and innovative farm recycling programme.

Used products don’t require new resources. Every manufactured product is responsible for resources being consumed - from farming cotton, clear-cutting forests, mining for metals, or pumping out oil. Think about the amount of carbon foot print from items that we get from the other side of the world.

The production of new books and furniture require trees to be cut down (95 per cent of books are made from virgin paper).

Anything made of plastic is produced from oil pumped from the Earth. The metals in cell phones, jewelry, computers, all must be scraped out of the planet, with horrible environmental consequences.

Luckily, there’s an alternative -

used items don’t require any new resources to be consumed. Used items come without packaging and a lot cheaper than buying new!

In addition to the second hand goods store they operate a Polystyrene waste service. They have a machine that melts and compresses the Polystyrene to a fraction of it’s original size, and then it’s sent overseas to be reused.

So don’t throw your packaging Polystyrene to the red bin – bring it to Wastebusters!

They also collect and recycle soft plastics (such as plastic bags from stores) from bins around town and in Christchurch (in supermarkets like Warehouse or Countdown) and pack it to be recycled. One of the more interesting things Sharon showed us was a wedding dress made from recycled soft plastic!

Due to their durability, plastic bags can take centuries to decompose. It can take between

500-1000 years for a plastic shopping bag to break down. When improperly disposed of they may end up in the sea or with bits flying in the wind causing harm to fish and birds that eat them.

Although we could put soft plastic in our yellow bin, their separation and recycling may not be guaranteed when mixed with

all of the other recyclables.

It’s always better to separate trash, so you should use the soft plastic bins around town instead of the yellow bin to ensure they are properly disposed of.

It’s the planet and environment we are going to leave for our children, so we should keep it as clean as possible.

Combined talents a treat

With just four days until smooth blues star Paul Ubana Jones steps on stage alongside the Mid Canterbury Choir, the pressure is on for the 60-odd performers.

But glancing around the room at rehearsals, there’s no shortage of smiles either.

As they prepare for the combined concert – a veritable feast of offerings from both their rep-

ertoires – choir members are relishing drawing from Jones’ exuberance and five decades of international experience.

While it’s the choir’s 72nd concert, Jones brings experience producing nine albums and dozens of international concerts – including alongside names like BB King, Bob Dylan, Norah Jones, Crowded House and Taj Mahal.

As a coach to the choir, he’s

“just great”, said Mid Canterbury Choir manager Carol Gunn.

“He tells stories as he goes, and he picks up his guitar and plays along,” Jones was born in London, but has dwelled in New Zealand since the late 1980s, and is currently based up the road in Southbridge.

He was playing guitar by the age of 11 and went on to study guitar, cello and composition at

Music College. Throughout his studies Jones began to forge his own contemporary style, influenced by blues, rock, folk and jazz, which he has developed over the years.

Paul Ubana Jones and the Mid Canterbury Choir will take the stage for Ride That Train on Friday, April 6.

Wicked opens in Christchurch on Friday.

One of the most popular Broadway spectacles of all time is coming to life in Christchurch this weekend – with the talents of three young Ashburtonians on board.

Wicked is coming to the Isaac Theatre Royale on Friday courtesy of Showbiz Christchurch, and among the cast are Jane Leonard, Greta Casey-Solly and Jack Hanrahan.

Leonard will play the lead role of Elphaba on alternate nights with actress Heather Lee Wilcock, while Casey-Solly and Hanrahan have secured spots in the ensemble. All three Ashburton performers are graduates of NASDA. The family-friendly classic follows the story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: blonde, very popular Glinda and misunderstood, greenskinned Elphaba.

Happy birthday

An extensive selection of cars, fine weather and plenty of public interest ensured Ashburton’s Americar Rod and Custom Club’s 50th birthday at the weekend was a great success.

The club, which hosted the New Zealand Hot Rod Association’s Street Rod Nationals as part of the weekend’s celebrations, welcomed around 150 cars from around the country, club secre-

tary Jason Gourlay said.

Those cars, which were officially entered in the event, were joined by around another 100 that travelled down from Christchurch, in a public display at Ashburton Raceway yesterday.

Activities began on Friday with a couple of runs around the district, Gourlay said.

The first was to the Bruce McIlroy Bentley Garage, which was followed by a trip out to the Bateman Tractor Museum at Wakanui and a

visit to the aviation museum. Saturday included a run to Leeston.

It all ran smoothly, with a lot of comaraderie evident.

“A good time has been had by all,” Gourlay said, adding that the weekend was a great way for those involved with the club to mark its 50th birthday.

Money raised from yesterday’s display will go to the Ashburton Fire Brigade, although that amount was still being counted late yesterday.

Consensus needed on Easter trading E

aster trading laws in New Zealand are all over the shop and something needs to change.

The way things stand right now is Easter trading hours are the domain of local governments, after they were given the responsibility by the then National-led government in 2016.

While that change may have got central government out of a tight spot, it’s landed local governments in one instead – something akin to pass the parcel -and resulted in a very messy and confusing situation over who can be open to trade and when they are allowed to.

Generally speaking, there are two distinct sides to the debate: retailers who want to open if they think there’s a buck in it, and unions who say their members

need a break from work to spend more time with their families.

As with most arguments, I suspect the fairest solution lies somewhere in the middle ground.

Those who would like to open their doors right through over Easter can point to the fact that New Zealand has changed immeasurably in the past couple of decades and whether people like it or not, we are a seven-daya-week society and we rely more than ever on a tourism industry

that contains people wanting to spend money where and when they want.

And of course there’s always plenty of locals more than happy to support those places able to open over Easter.

It’s a potentially valuable couple of business days.

You’ve only got to look back about 10 years or so to the Oderings Nurseries chain, which was more than happy to pay a fine every year because it was a drop in the bucket compared to what they raked in across the counter.

In Dunedin over the past weekend the city council decided that, given the vast numbers coming to town for the Ed Sheeran concerts, to not allow bars in the central city to open throughout the weekend would put a dampner on the occasion and leave the

council open to criticism. But this is not to say the unions don’t have a point either.

Many families these days have at least one parent working most weekends, so chances for wholefamily get-togethers are harder and harder to find.

Easter and Christmas provide options that are few and far between.

And given that retailers can open just about every other day of the year, what’s wrong with having a couple that they can’t?

After all, it’s only a couple.

However, while I understand the unions’ position, I’m sure most businesses have workers who would be prepared to work over Easter – especially if their employers provided a sweetner in terms of extra time off or higher pay rates.

But the biggest problem is that there’s no consistency. Personally, more often than not I’m a believer in one law for all rather than trying to apply a mish-mash of regulations and exemptions that in the end please no one, whether they be employers, employees or consumers.

It’s time for central government to stand up, show some leadership and take ownership of the Easter trading issue.

Leaving the decision in the hands of local governments around the country just guarantees there will never be any consistency and it will be a continued case of no one knowing where they stand.

Unless of course if you wanting to go shopping online – now there’s an industry that truly is open all hours.

ver the past couple of weeks we have seen a number of cases of conflicting messages coming from the Government. While it is natural that political parties forming a coalition will have different perspectives on some issues, it is also essential that Cabinet Ministers clearly present the Government position to both domestic and international audiences.

Some examples of unclear or inconsistent messages that have occurred recently are: ■ The Prime Minister being unclear around the future of New Zealand’s oil and gas sector; ■ The Deputy Prime Minister demonstrating reluctance to condemn Russia for its use of a deadly nerve agent to attack former Russian operatives in the UK; ■ The Deputy Prime Minister openly questioning New Zealand’s relationship with our largest trading partner, China; ■ The Minister for Regional Development acting inappropriately by threatening the management and board

of Air New Zealand, resulting in the Prime Minister needing to tell him publicly to back off; and ■ The Deputy Prime Minister publicly sympathising with the US decision to impose tariffs on steel imports.

When you represent the Government, it is important that you do not just shoot your mouth off and say whatever comes into your head.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s weak stance against Russia’s actions in Salisbury risks jeopardising our hopes of obtaining free trade agreements (FTAs) with the UK and the EU. Mr Peters’ comments on our relationship with China have also cast doubt on the China FTA upgrade.

The Government’s apparent move away from our long-

recognised role as a leading proponent of free trade makes no sense.

If countries start reinstating tariffs in a tit-for-tat trade war, the global economy will slow.

This will reduce the demand for our goods overseas and make life harder for our exporters.

It is disappointing that the New Zealand Government has been slow to seek an exemption for our exporters from the recently-imposed US tariffs.

Meanwhile, the governments of the EU, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and South Korea have all successfully delivered interim exemptions for their exporters.

That means that our exporters will be paying tariffs of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium when their competitors from those countries are not.

This is about more than just a tax on our steel and aluminium exports.

It’s about standing up for the rules-based international trading system and for free trade – something New Zealand has earned an international reputation for doing.

Saying the wrong thing can also affect business confidence here in New Zealand.

When businesses are facing uncertainty they do not invest and they stop employing additional staff.

New Zealand’s economy has been humming in recent years – creating over 10,000 jobs a month, and lifting the average annual wage by $13,000 since 2008. Unfortunately though our growth is already slowing while the world speeds up and when economic growth weakens, ordinary New Zealanders pay the price.

What this Government needs to remember is that a strong economy underpins everything else it wants to achieve – more jobs, higher incomes, and greater investment in infrastructure and public service. Our economy is not a political plaything.

Hawking farewelled Actor Eddie Redmayne gave a reading at the funeral of Stephen Hawking, as well-wishers lined the streets and applause broke out as the renowned physicist’s coffin was carried into the church.

Hawking died peacefully at his Cambridge home on March 14 at the age of 76.

The cosmologist had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his 20s, and was wheelchair-bound and used a voice synthesiser to speak.

Redmayne, who played the role of Hawking in the 2014 biographical film The Theory of Everything, was among 500 guests invited to the University Church of St Mary the Great in Cambridge.

He gave a biblical reading at the service and Astronomer Royal Martin Rees also spoke.

Model and Cambridge University graduate Lily Cole, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May and comedian Dara O Briain, who made a documentary about Prof Hawking, were among those seen arriving to the funeral.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and playwright Alan Bennett had also been on the guest list.

The church bell tolled 76 times, once for each year of Hawking’s life, as the solid oak coffin adorned with floral tributes arrived in a hearse.

Roses, peonies for Meghan Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be surrounded by white garden roses, peonies and foxgloves on their wedding day. The couple have chosen floral designer Philippa Craddock to create the church flowers for their big day on May 19. Craddock will use seasonal blooms from around Windsor to decorate the ceremony venue, including white garden roses, peonies and foxgloves. Craddock will direct a team, including florists from St George’s Chapel and Buckingham Palace, to create the displays at St George’s Chapel and for St George’s Hall, Kensington Palace said.

Robert Hawking, Hawking’s eldest child, delivered a eulogy at the service.

The church where the private funeral service was held is near to Gonville and Caius College.

The funeral was followed by a private reception at Trinity College.

Hawking’s ashes will be interred close to the remains of Sir Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey on June 15.

Man killed in French fairground accident A man has been killed and another person has been seriously injured in a fairground ride accident in a small town north of Lyon, French authorities say.

The Rhone prefecture said three other people were slightly injured after the ride collapsed at the weekend in Neuville-surSaone.

The prefecture wouldn’t provide details on the identities or the ages of the victims.

The ride was composed of three rotating axis with baskets carrying people in pairs.

Laurent Buffard, deputy mayor of Neuville-sur-Saone, told BFM television that one of the axis somehow hit the ground.

Star moving on It’s the end of an era for Shortland Street’s transgender actor Tash Keddy, but there are hopes his storyline will have a lasting impact. Wellington-born Keddy made history when he became the medical soap’s first transgender actor playing a transgender character in a long-running storyline. Two years on, Keddy was set to make his final appearance in Wednesday’s episode as his character Blue – a teenage girl who wants to be a boy – leaves home to go flatting. Reflecting on his first major acting gig, the 22-year-old said he believed the role had changed things for the transgender community.

Two dead in plane crash in US Two people have died after a homebuilt airplane crashed into a shed outside the Southern California city of Santa Paula.

The two-seat aircraft went down yesterday afternoon when the weather was clear and sunny, according to Ventura County fire Captain Stan Ziegler.

He said the two people were pronounced dead when firefighters got to the crash site less than a mile from Santa Paula Airport, reports Daily Mail.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane was a homebuilt Vans RV-6A that caught fire after it went down.

There has been much speculation about her status after the 45-year-old actress stepped back from the spotlight in recent years. Selma Blair, 45, Diaz’s co-star from 2002’s The Sweetest Thing, added fuel to the rumours earlier this month when she spoke about her pal getting out of the business. “I would have liked to do a sequel, but Cameron’s retired from acting. She’s like, ‘I’m done.’”

Tomb nearly ready for visitors

After almost a decade, the makeover of King Tut’s tomb in Egypt is nearly ready for tourists.

John Rogers reports.

A

nearly decade-long makeover of King Tut’s tomb aimed at preserving one of Egypt’s most important archaeological sites and also one of its most popular tourist attractions is close to complete, says the Getty Conservation Institute of Los Angeles.

The project has added a filtration system to keep out dust, humidity and carbon dioxide and a barrier to keep visitors from continuing to damage the tomb’s elaborate wall paintings. Other amenities include walkways and a viewing platform.

New lights are also scheduled to be installed in the fall in the tomb of Tutankhamun, the legendary boy king who ruled Egypt more than 3000 years ago. His mummified body remains on display in an oxygen-free case.

The project was launched in 2009 by the Los Angeles institute, known worldwide for its conservation work, in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities.

“This project greatly expanded our understanding of one of the best known and significant sites from antiquity, and the methodology used can serve as a model for similar sites,” Tim Whalen, the John E and Louise Bryson director of the institute, said.

Tutankhamun, just a child when he assumed the throne, was about 19 when he died.

have some visitors who scratched the wall paintings.

“Humidity promotes microbiological growth and may also physically stress the wall paintings, while carbon dioxide creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for visitors themselves,” said Neville Agnew, the institute’s senior principal project specialist.

“But perhaps even more harmful has been the physical damage to the wall paintings,” he added. “Careful examination showed an accumulation of scratches and abrasion in areas close to where visitors and film crews have access within the tomb’s tight space.”

Conservationists also studied mysterious brown spots on some of the paintings that have baffled experts for years. They concluded they were caused by micro-organisms that have since died and are causing no further damage.

They decided to leave the spots there because they have penetrated into the paint layers and removing them would cause more damage. - AP

Warriors running hot

By DaviD Skipwith No Shaun Johnson – no problem, say the unbeaten table-topping Warriors.

The Auckland NRL club continued their early season party and announced themselves as genuine finals contenders with an upset 30-6 victory over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night.

If their first three wins over mid-strength Rabbitohs, Titans and Raiders sides didn’t convince you of the Warriors’ top eight potential, their historic fourthstraight victory over one of the premiership heavyweights absolutely should.

With Johnson missing the match with a groin strain, backup halfback Mason Lino filled in superbly to finish his 10th NRL match with a personal haul of 18 points from a try and seven goals.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring for the visitors before bustling back-rower Leivaha Pulu and powerful centre Solomone Kata both crossed to help them enjoy a commanding 18-6 halftime lead, after the Roosters scored an early try through centre Latrell Mitchell.

Lino then slotted a penalty 12 minutes into the second-half, and soon after produced a pinpoint cross-field kick for wing David Fusitu’a to climb high to post their fourth try with more than a quarter of the match remaining, before Lino rounded out his tally with two more late penalties.

Coach Stephen Kearney suggested that the Roosters might have taken his side lightly following news pre-game that the Warriors were missing both their key playmaker Johnson and prop James Gavet, who was ruled out

“Possibly we got them on a bit of an off-day, when you get the news of someone like Shaun and James not being in the side,” Kearney said.

“I’m not downplaying the lads’ effort – they defended really well and stuck to the plan pretty well.

“There were times when we drifted away from it but there were contributions from right

across the park and it was going to take one of those sorts of performances from the team today.”

Kearney was pleased with Lino’s contribution and explained Johnson’s absence was more precautionary, leaving hope that he’ll be fit for next Saturday’s double-header clash against North Queensland at Mt Smart Stadium.

“Early on in the week he pulled

up with a bit of soreness and he missed a couple of trainings and had a fitness test yesterday and we just didn’t want to take any risks,” he said.

“Young Mason’s been with the group all week and he did a wonderful job.”

The Warriors last year managed only one away win but this year’s outfit are thriving on the challenge of playing across the Tasman.

They’ve already racked up their third road victory despite a busy schedule taking them to Perth, Auckland, and Canberra before Sydney.

The Roosters were the first to score with Mitchell finishing off a set move but the home side’s play quickly deteriorated through mistakes and ill-discipline.

The Warriors replied with Lino accepting an offload from second-rower Tohu Harris to score after Green switched play back across the ruck from left to right.

Sustained pressure paid off after Lino forced a repeat set with Pulu crashing over on the left, and Kata steamed on to a pass from captain Roger TuivasaSheck down the same side to extend the lead to 18-4 before Mitchell kicked a penalty for the Roosters just before halftime.

The anticipated Roosters comeback never got going and the Warriors pushed further ahead in the second-half through Lino’s right boot and Fusitu’a’s fifth try of the season, while they defended brilliantly to contain the Tri Colours.

England take full control of final test

By DaviD Leggat England had worked themselves into a strong position by stumps on day three of the final test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval.

Trailing 1-0 in the series and desperate to end a 12-test away streak without a victory, England reached 202 for three to give themselves an overall lead of 231 with two days remaining.

England will start again this morning with captain Joe Root

on 30 and Dawid Malan on 19.

England lost two wickets in the final session, opener Mark Stoneman and James Vince.

The pair, both of whom needed runs to end an average summer on a good note, put on 123 for the second wicket to lay a sound platform.

Stoneman went on to 60, the highest of his five test half centuries, but he lived dangerously. He was dropped on 48 by Ross Taylor, one-handed at slip, and 57,

by Tim Southee, a more difficult

chance at slip, both off luckless Colin de Grandhomme.

Stoneman also survived a DRS review for a catch behind off Neil Wagner on 35. His luck ran out when wicketkeeper BJ Watling leapt high to his left to clutch an edge off Southee.

Vince played some elegant shots in passing 50 for a third time. He fell at 76 to a fine slip catch by Taylor, to his left, off Trent Boult.

Root and Malan avoided a late runout mishap when the captain

Earlier in the day, Watling added just eight to his overnight 77 before being bowled by a lovely swinging delivery from Jimmy Anderson. Sodhi didn’t last long, becoming Stuart Broad’s fifth wicket, and Southee completed his fourth test 50.

Wagner and Boult added an entertaining 39 for the last wicket before Broad got rid of Boult to finish the innings with six for 54.

Trbojevic sidelined Tom Trbojevic will miss only two weeks however Kelepi Tanginoa and Curtis Sironen have been ruled out for the season in a devastating blow for Manly.

Trbojevic set up four tries for the Sea Eagles and scored one of his own before limping off during their 32-16 NRL win over Canberra on Saturday night. The 21-year-old has previously had surgery on the same ankle at the end of 2016 and the club said yesterday he would miss the side’s upcoming clashes with the Gold Coast and Wests Tigers. But that’s as good as the news got for the under-siege Sea Eagles with Sironen and Tanginoa set to miss the rest of 2018. - AAP

Hayne out for a month Parramatta star Jarryd Hayne has been ruled out for up to a month with a hip injury. After being forced from the field in last week’s loss to Cronulla, Hayne was expected to miss just two games. However coach Brad Arthur said he would be sidelined for the next three to four weeks. “I think around round seven or eight,” Arthur said when asked when Hayne would return.

It’s a big blow for the winless Eels who are already without Clint Gutherson (knee) and Bevan French (shoulder).

Marshall cleared to play Wests Tigers playmaker Benji Marshall has been cleared of an ankle injury and will take the field for today’s NRL clash with Parramatta. Marshall ruptured the lateral ligament in his left ankle in the Tigers’ controversial round three loss to Brisbane. But the 33-yearold has made a swift recovery and has been running with the side the last several days.

The fact the 31-year-old journeyman is even in the conversation for State of Origin honours is something he finds hard to fathom.

Drama ‘drained’ Manly Manly coach Trent Barrett admits he and captain Daly Cherry-Evans were left drained by the salary cap scandal at the club in the lead up to Saturday’s win over Canberra.

The Sea Eagles’ salary cap cloud is set to hang over the club for even longer, after management confirmed last week they would challenge the NRL’s findings, $750,000 fine and cap reductions for the next two years. But while Barrett said it was easy to make sure the matter didn’t take over the squad in the lead up to the round four clash, he and CherryEvans had definitely been affected.

In brief Folau out with injury Wallabies superstar Israel Folau is set for stint on the sidelines after damaging his hamstring in the NSW Waratahs’ battling Super Rugby win over the Brumbies on Saturday. Folau went down only minutes into his side’s 24-17 victory at GIO Stadium and was replaced by Alex Newsome, who delivered an inspired performance on the right wing. The former NRL and AFL player will miss the trip to Japan to play the Sunwolves next Saturday and then home matches against the Queensland Reds and the Lions.

David Pocock’s long-awaited comeback for the Brumbies was eventful, to say the least. The star flanker’s first game since a devastating 2016 quarter-final loss coincided with his 100th appearance. It also happened to be at the Brumbies’ home of GIO Stadium against their biggest rivals, the Waratahs.

The 29-year-old’s opposing No.7 was none other than Wallabies captain Michael Hooper. If that wasn’t enough to take in, Pocock saw out the full 80 minutes. But the Brumbies suffered a shattering 24-17 defeat.

Lam adds to puzzle

Joshua ‘a great champion’

It’s hard to fathom, but the All Black-laden Hurricanes backline has become even more potent, and they have one of rugby’s surprise packages to thank for it. Ben Lam became the first Hurricanes player to score four tries in a game in the 50-19 win over the Rebels, moving him to a competition-leading eight for the season. Perhaps having five current or former All Blacks in the same backline wasn’t enough for the Hurricanes, who could soon add a sixth to their ranks if Lam keeps up his blistering start to the season.

He’s given up the WBO world title, but maybe gained a few fans for his arduous yet skilful display against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff.

Joseph Parker lost yesterday’s world heavyweight unification bout by unanimous decision, but is the first man to go the distance with the Englishman.

It wasn’t without controversy.

New Zealand judge Ian Scott awarded it 119-109 to Joshua, with the two others, American Steve Weisfeld and Brit Steve Gray scoring it 118-110.

The issues were several – from the drama pre-fight when his hands were wrapped, to Joshua continually hitting after the break.

But the fact is, Parker just couldn’t get close enough.

He had good moments but not enough and couldn’t hurt Joshua when it mattered.

For the 26-year-old to win this he had to have a lot of things go right.

Unfortunately for him, Joshua was just too powerful and had a jab better than Parker’s.

“My strategy was to stick behind the jab, that’s one of the most important weapons,” Joshua said in the ring afterwards.

The 28-year-old Englishman

stated he wants to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, and on this form he will be.

It’s difficult to see Deontay Wilder, the WBC champion, taking the IBF, WBA and now WBO titles from him.

Parker’s best rounds were the first two and possibly the fifth, but he looked the most dangerous when he was tagged. Unfortunately for him, when he went to engage and brawl, the referee got in the way.

“Today I got beaten by a better champion, a better man,” Parker said to cheers for the first time of the night.

The main event, which took place after a horrible knockout of Englishman David Price by Russian Alexander Povetkin in the main undercard fight, and after boos greeted the Samoan and New Zealand anthems, took place in a frenzied atmosphere.

Parker, dressed in white shorts like his opponent, got some success to the body in the first round, and scored with a left hook near his red corner.

Both men were cagey but Joshua was especially so.

Parker probably shaded the second round with a couple of solid body punches and an over-

hand right which found the target Joshua was close with his power punches but Parker was slightly out of range every time.

Joshua found his range in the third and both men were warned for leading with their heads.

Immediately after Parker landed a left hook but it was Joshua’s round.

The fourth was Joshua’s – he landed the heavier punches by far and looked dominant but he wasn’t hurting Parker.

Parker stepped on the throttle in the fifth – scoring with a good combination and getting success with an overhand right to the head.

It was a close round but Parker may have edged it.

In the sixth, a brawl broke out; Joshua landing and then, fired up, Parker chased him around the ring before the pair were separated.

Parker scored with a right uppercut, but Joshua probably edged it.

The seventh was another close round, with both men hitting on the break, referee Giuseppe Quartarone issuing another warning.

The eighth was possibly Joshua’s best round, but a strip of tape on his left glove was flapping for

most of it. Strangely the referee didn’t call a time out to fix it.

The tape issue was back in the next round, this time on his right hand.

The end of the ninth round was marked by a nod of respect from both men. Another close one.

There was blood in the 10th, a cut near Parker’s left eye, and more controversy.

The tape came loose from Joshua’s left glove again, and Joshua hit after the break once again, the referee overly eager to get between the two men when they started brawling.

Parker scored with good shots in the 11th, but Joshua seemingly had an answer to everything Parker threw at him. He also scored with the dramatic head shots which brought the crowd into the fight.

Joshua comfortably took the final round.

There was drama in the hour or so before the fight when Joshua’s representative watching Parker’s hands being wrapped complained.

However that was dismissed by British Boxing Board of Control representative Robert Smith.

The night is Joshua’s and deservedly so – he is a great champion.

Sharks give Blues a Super Rugby lesson The Sharks have shrugged off second-half fightback from the Blues to grab a 63-40 win in a turbo-charged Super Rugby match at Eden Park.

Coming off the bye, the Blues were comprehensively outplayed

on Saturday, with poor tackling and an inability to secure quality ball allowing the Sharks to open out a 26-7 halftime lead.

The Aucklanders hit back in the second spell with three tries in the space of eight minutes but

could find no answer to a masterful display from Sharks fly-half Robert du Preez.

The 24-year-old playmaker kicked flawlessly, nailing seven penalties and six conversions as well as scoring a try of his own to

total 38 points for the match.

An inability to compete at the breakdown cost the Blues dearly.

The Sharks had the last say in the match as fullback Curwin Bosch crossed in stoppage time.

Ko loses all chance Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has lost any chance of repeating her 2016 win at the year’s first women’s major following a modest third round. Ko slipped from 15th to a share of 32nd at the ANA Inspiration in California courtesy of a one-over 73. She was always playing catchup after shooting a double-bogey six on the third hole at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. The former world No.1, who hasn’t won a tournament in nearly two years, is left battling for the minor money after slipping to three-under, 11 shots behind Pernilla Lindberg. - NZME

No focus on star trio Geelong’s superstar midfielders have hogged the limelight in the lead-up to today’s big AFL clash, but Hawthorn won’t make the mistake of fixating on the Cats’ talented trio. Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett will play together for the first time since Ablett’s move from Gold Coast after Geelong played it safe with Dangerfield’s hamstring injury last week. Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson maintains he won’t go in with a preconceived plan to employ a hard tag on one or more of the midfield prime movers.

“That’s been a debate that’s been played out in the media throughout the course of the week ... we’ll play out those scenarios as we go through,” Clarkson said.

Victory into finals Melbourne Victory have played out some A-League hum-dingers this season, but even according to coach Kevin Muscat, this was new.

Two red cards and three goals in 15 minutes and a stunning volley from unlikely suspect Thomas Deng secured a 3-1 win for Victory secured finals football for the A-League powerhouse on Saturday night. “I’m used to entertaining here but that took things to a new level tonight,” he said.

Long-distance champion

In a way in which only Ricky May can, Ricky May did at Addington on Saturday.

The master of long-distance harness racing added another Group One to his already incredible resume when he produced a cool, calm and collected effort on A G’s White Socks in the $100,000 Easter Cup. The 69th Group One-winning drive of his longstanding career, May has made a name for himself when it comes to racing over the extreme distance, with his kind and patient nature seeing him guide many a horse to victory over the two-mile distance.

Of his 69 Group Ones, 19 of them have come in races over 3200 metres; from Easter Cups to Dominion Handicaps and of course, the New Zealand Trotting Cup of which he is the most successful driver of all time with seven wins.

Saturday’s effort was as good as any.

After being well beaten eight days earlier, May gave A G’s

White Socks the dream run and he proved too good for favourite More The Better.

It was almost 12 months ago that co-trainer Greg Hope prompted other stable clients to buy in to the son of Rock N Roll Heaven after then breeder/sole owner Pat Laboyrie received a large offshore offer.

Hope can rightfully feel vindicated after the four-year-old’s win in Saturday’s Group 1 $100,000 Easter Cup at Addington.

“I’ve always liked him and said he’s a good horse,” he said.

“It’s taken a while to get him sorted, but I think, judging by that – we might be getting somewhere.”

Owned by Hope, Laboyrie, Peter Bakin, Vicky Robertson, Wayne and Connie Stewart and Allan and Barbara Pullar, A G’s White Socks is from top producing mare, Atomic Gold, the dam of well-performed pacer Power of Tara.

He’s now won six of 21 with nine placings and the fun is just beginning.

May produced one of those

typically brilliant drives he is famous for to have the big gelding in all the right places and get him to the line first.

“I think the key was to get him to relax and we did that today,” May said.

“He just jogged up to them, then started to prick the ears and look about it – he did it quite easy.”

May claimed his seventh Easter Cup success after victories with Terror To Love, Monkey King (2), Baileys Dream, Blue Chip Rock and Inky Lord previously.

The attention will now turn to the two four-year-old features at Alexandra Park – the Taylor Mile and the NZ Messenger – and that might be it for the season.

“If we want to focus on the Cup we might have to miss the Jewels, it’s a 50/50 call at this stage but I would suggest we might not be there.”

More The Better, who led the entire way and walked his way through the first mile before winding up over the final half of the race, fought bravely but was no match for the winner.

Tiger Thompson, who made a mid-race move, was a brave third.

Things went from great to even better half an hour later for the Hope and May combination when Enghien got his act together to win the Four and Five-Year-Old Trotting Championships.

Sacred Rhythm bounces back Lightly raced staying prospect Sacred Rhythm put a disappointing last start performance well behind her when she produced a gritty victory to open the day at Awapuni on Saturday.

The four-year-old had wilted badly in stakes company over 2000m at Matamata at her last start when expected to be prominent after back-to-back victories leading into the race.

Co-trainer Moira Murdoch took her home for a quick freshen up that paid dividends as she resumed with aplomb to down a handy line-up over 1550m in rating 85 company.

Rider Shaun McKay didn’t hesitate to place Sacred Rhythm outside the speed throughout after

she made a good beginning from a wide barrier.

McKay applied the pressure approaching the home turn before taking control at the top of the straight. Although briefly headed by southern raider Disturbance, Sacred Rhythm kept up a powerful gallop to hold out local runners Heavens Keep and Platinum Command in a driving finish.

“She’s a great beginner, sometimes to her detriment, but today she got across and relaxed nicely outside the speed,” said Murdoch, who prepares the Pentire mare with daughter Kieran.

“She’s a very tough mare and when she gets things right she is pretty hard to roll.

Nirvana ready for Rotorua Promising two-year-old Nirvana in Fire resumes from a short summer break when he takes on a small but select line-up in the juvenile event over 1215m at Rotorua today.

A smart trial win at Taupo recently has co-trainer Andrew Scott of the belief the powerful colt is ready to return in style at Rotorua.

“He’s a pretty smart customer as he showed in his first campaign,” he said.

“Things just didn’t go his way

in the Karaka Million so we gave him a brief freshen-up and he has come back keen and looking superb after the time away.

“He won his trial nicely over 1000m at Taupo, without being asked for much so we are happy with where he is at for Rotorua.”

Rakaia, Celtic in rarified air

Mid Canterbury rugby sides, Celtic and Rakaia, sit comfortably at the top of their respective divisions of the Combined Country Rugby Competition after securing maximum points from the opening two rounds.

After a disjointed weekend of the competition, in which games began on Wednesday night and then flowed through to the traditional Saturday afternoon slot, the five Mid Canterbury teams fixtures netted three points plus an agonising one point defeat for Southern.

Celtic tidied up the weekend with a

dominant performance against neighbours Hampstead in the first local derby of the season – winning 51-15.

The game was very much a battle of two halves, with Hampstead showing some of their promise to trail 22-15 at the break before Celtic asserted their authority in the second stanza with 29 unanswered points.

Across the board, Celtic were strong but a couple of individual moments of brilliance pathed the way for success.

Nathan McCloy’s solo effort to cut through the Hampstead backline was a standout while the final try of the match to captain Danny Hurley, in which the hosts marched the entire length of the field with

contributions from many sets of hands, was also memorable.

With 10 points in the bag from their opening two matches, Celtic will this week face their toughest challenge when they head up to North Canterbury to play the Glenmark Cheviot side in an effort to keep their unbeaten season intact.

Life won’t get any easier for Hampstead unfortunately – they head over the river to take on defending champions, Southbridge to continue their tough start to the season.

There’s no doubt Shaun Bovey and Craig Dwyer are making some inroads with the blue and golds, but a tough first few rounds will test their determination.

Over in Division One, Southern will be looking to bounce back from their narrow defeat to Prebbleton when they host Springston out at Mayfield.

Last year’s Watters Cup winners will have to be on their toes after the new boys to the competition gave Rakaia a huge fright on Friday night when scoring 24 unanswered points to snare two bonus points from what looked to be a lost cause match.

Methven, who were too slick for Hornby on Thursday night, will host Prebbleton for their first home match of the season.

Rakaia will head north to tackle their second consecutive new team to the competition, Hurunui at Culverden.
