Burglar strikes Carew community

Police are on the hunt for the person that vandalised and burgled Carew Peel Forest School and other community buildings over Easter weekend.

The incident was reported to Police at 4.40am on Tuesday after the school had been broken into and several items taken, a police spokeswoman said.

“Police attended, however no one was located upon arrival.

“Enquiries are under way including reviewing CCTV footage. A forensic examination was carried out [on Tuesday].”

Security cameras, that the Guardian understands were only recently installed, were removed, however they captured footage of a person in a dark hooded sweatshirt on the school grounds on Monday afternoon.

“Police are keen to talk to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around 4.30-4.45am yesterday (Tuesday), or in the afternoon of Monday, April 5.

In the school’s newsletter, principal Sharon Ketter states that the offender also broke into and vandalised the school’s office, taking money, a computer and equipment, and a phone as well as a number of keys.

“There is a substantial amount of damage to buildings and replacing the approximately 50 keys and locks has cost us

$4300 already,” she said.

“Sadly, the community hall and the church were also broken into with the beautiful stained glass windows in the church being damaged and a huge panel of glass in the hall being broken.

“I am so saddened by such a devastating event in our community.”

A statement on the school’s Facebook page said that a number of items were taken including a leaf blower, MacBook Air computer, petrol containers, a weedeater, compressor and several other items that “appears out of place”.

“If you saw a vehicle parked outside our school by the wooden fence on Trevors Road any time Monday, or anywhere in the vicinity of our school overnight Monday, please let us know,” the statement said.

“The loss of so much equipment and the damage done to buildings is very sad and costly for us and massively impedes upon the important job of teaching that we would much rather focus on.

“We would appreciate any help you can give us.”

The school had previously been victims of burglary in 2019. And it took until last year – through some successful grant applications and sponsorship – before they were able to replace the stolen items.

The school and police are asking anyone with information about this incident, or who can identify the person in the security footage, to contact police on 105, quoting file number 210407/7500.

Police would like to hear from anyone who recognises the person pictured in relation to the burglary at Carew Peel Forest School.

Anzac Day at the cenotaph whatever the weather

There’s no wet weather venue for the Anzac Day commemorations in Ashburton on April 25.

RSA President, Merv Brenton, said “our service personnel didn’t have a wet weather venue when they fought for their country overseas so we’re not moving indoors whatever the conditions”.

Two Anzac services are at the Cenotaph at Baring Square while the third will be held at the cemetery – rain, hail or shine.

The 2020 commemoration was curtailed because of Covid-19.

Instead, people stood in their driveways at home.

This year Brenton and his team have been planning the three services since early February.

The format for the dawn service will be traditional.

It will include the national anthem led

by Amelia Jones, scripture reading, the

poems Flanders Fields and For The Fallen, an address from Rangitata MP, Jo Luxton, and the last post and reveille while the flag is lowered and raised.

A key feature is the wreath laying ceremony and Brenton invites all service personnel to lay poppies at the foot of the cenotaph.

Strobe lighting and sirens will precede the service.

“The dawn service is the start of remembrance for the day. It’s an opportunity to commemorate and recall,” Brenton said.

“It’s hugely moving for many people who see it as their chance to pay tribute to service personnel who either served or sacrificed their lives for their country.”

The cemetery service at the RSA section involves the MSA choir who’ll sing the national anthem and an appropriate hymn, an address by a member of the Defence Force and the last post and reveille while the flag is lowered and raised.

Brenton anticipates the biggest audience will attend the 11am civic service.

Service men and women plus members of the police force, cadets, army and airforce personnel and scouts and guides will march to the cenotaph led by the Ashburton Pipe Band.

The event includes wreath laying, addresses from mayor Neil Brown and Brenton, prayers, the reciting of commemorative poems, the last post, reveille and piper’s lament and a three-gun salute.

Brenton expects 1000 people at the 6.30am dawn service and an even larger crowd will attend the civic service at 11am.

“There are so many people in Mid Canterbury who have family members who served in our areas of conflict,” he said.

In the afternoon there’s an Anzac Day Memorial Run or Walk at the Ashburton Domain at 1.30pm organised by the RSA and Ashburton Rotary Club.

Brenton points out that Mid Canterbury was a key location for World War Two training at Westerfield military camp and Ashburton Airport which was a base for training pilots and air crew.

Community leaders ‘not getting carried away’ around bubble

Community leaders in Mid Canterbury are tempering their delight ahead of a possible inpouring of visitors from across the ditch.

The regions are expected to receive a timely boost as a trans-Tasman bubble becomes a reality later this month, with quiet optimism being expressed by key figures in the Ashburton District.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said it was great to open the borders up to visitors across the Tasman.

“As long as we do it safely,” he said.

Methven – home to the district’s crown jewel attraction Mt Hutt Skifield – was considered one of the big local winners following the Government’s announcement this week.

Methven Community Board chairperson Dan McLaughlin said it was more about balancing the books for the local business com-

munity after a tough period of trading.

“I wouldn’t say they’ll be reaping the rewards, but recovering some of their losses is a better way of putting it,” he said.

“The accommodators I’ve spoken to are pretty happy about it and they can see some positivity.”

Although there were reasons to be pleased, McLaughlin said it was important to remain grounded over the next few months.

“It’s not as simple as opening it up and away we go,” he said.

“There are conditions.

“Anything could happen between now and winter.”

Brown said the benefits would not be limited to Methven.

“We’re the gateway to the south,” he said.

“Methven will obviously gain value out of it, as will the whole of the district.”

“Everyone needs to travel through Mid Canterbury.”

Local businesses who endured last year’s

Covid impact would be looking forward to an injection of trading.

It was revealed that about 90 per cent of local operators had so far withstood the commercial brunt with a handful of firms forced to close post-Covid.

“Hopefully they too will survive,” Brown said.

“So bring on April 19.”

ChChNZ’s Mid Canterbury marketing manager Bruce Moffatt said he was grateful for the support of domestic tourism over the past 12 months.

However, there was a stark difference between domestic and Australian spend.

“Australian travellers spend 12 dollars, while we spend 1,” he said.

“It’s critical that we get the Australian market in play pretAshburton District Mayor Neil Brown ty quickly.”

Bubble boom – hopes rise in Methven

Businesses in Methven are hoping opening of a trans-Tasman bubble will make for a busy winter.

Mid Canterbury’s tourist town Methven is hoping to boom once more this winter following the announcement of a trans-Tasman bubble opening later this month.

With a multi-million dollar investment in a new supersized chairlift on Mt Hutt Skifield and the pending opening of the Opuke Hot Pools, the news of a trans-Tasman bubble has been huge for Methven.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Tuesday that the trans-Tasman bubble will open on April 19.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager and Opuke Hot Pools director James McKenzie said the announcement “couldn’t have come at a better time” with winter fast approaching.

“It is really positive news for anyone involved in the tourism industry,” he said.

“Typically we don’t see quite as many Australians at Mt Hutt as they do in Queenstown, but it’s the icing on the cake for us.”

Border closures didn’t have as

big of an impact for the skifield, he said due to a strong domestic market, but that didn’t help the local businesses.

“The local market has been fantastic for us and last year Mt Hutt had one of its better seasons.

“What we may have lost last year through border closures was made up by domestic patrons.”

However, he said that success up the mountain didn’t help the local businesses, with a large number of Cantabrians able to commute to the slopes, but Australian tourists will need places to stay and eat.

“It definitely helps Methven, and it helps Mt Hutt when Methven is doing well so we are delighted if Methven can have a less troublesome winter ahead of them.

McKenzie said the trans-Tasman bubble and possibility of international tourists returning would certainly be welcomed by local businesses, “especially the accommodation providers who have had a challenging year”.

One of those is Peter and Susanne Wood who run Ski Time in Methven, believed the bubble is particularly positive for them

and the Methven area, and within hours of the announcement were taking bookings from Australia.

“We have a high number of returnees, people who have been coming to us for years,” Susanne Wood said.

“They must have been online straight away which is good because we expect many others to do the same and so encourage people to be quick.

The new chairlift and the hot pools were set to make Methven a more attractive destination Peter Wood said and now “we just need the visitors”.

“A busy upcoming ski season is absolutely key for us and others,” he said.

The Woods have been thankful for the continued support of locals, however, with 70 per cent of their clientele, particularly in winter, coming from Australia, this new bubble is essential.

“We have a small but amazing team here at Ski Time and they have been incredibly adaptable and patient. One minute we have bookings from Auckland, the next with a lockdown every single one cancels – it’s been very challenging,” he said.

Appeal will help equip Ashburton ambulances

Ashburton St John Ambulances will benefit from St John’s Heart of Gold Annual Appeal.

The equipment, such as first response kits, oxygen units and bag masks, are essential to “help ensure our ambulances are well equipped so we can keep being there when we are needed,” she said.

Arrival of first refugee group delayed

The arrival of the district’s first tranche of refugees has been delayed again.

Refugee Settlement Support Service (RSSS) team leader, Katy Harrington-Watt, said that the first refugee family that was planned to arrive in Ashburton on April 16 for resettlement, will no longer be

resettling in Ashburton due to their need for complex medical care needs.

“It has been decided by MBIE that it would be more appropriate for them to be resettled in Christchurch with access to suitable medical follow up,” she said.

“It’s disappointing but its in the best interest of the family which is always our priority.”

That means that no family will be arriving on April 16 and

Hit and run Police are searching for a driver who hit and killed sheep along Longbeach Road on Tuesday and fled the scene. At around 2pm police were informed that a ute had driven into a number of sheep while the animals were being moved along Longbeach Road, and then drove off a police spokeswoman said. Approximately 25 sheep were killed immediately or were subsequently put down. Enquiries are underway into this incident to identify the vehicle involved, and understand the circumstances of what happened. the next families planned for settlement in Ashburton will arrive at the end of May. The latest delay has a silver lining, Harrington-Watt said, as they now had more time to finalise housing details for the families, and other aspects of the resettlement process.

The delay extends the wait for the first arrivals to almost a year.

Ashburton was chosen as a refugee resettlement town in

2019 and the RSSS team has been planning for the arrival of refugees since Safer Ashburton secured the $350,000 contract to provide settlement support services in October 2019.

The first intake was initially scheduled for June last year, but had to be delayed due to Covid-19.

Now they have to continue to wait, and prepare, for the end of May to finally welcome a family to the district.

Residents on Fords Road near Willowby experienced a super outage on Thursday. Instead of five planned outages over the next few weeks, EA Networks brought in 12 crews, including eight from Christchurch, to complete the work over two days. The crew members spent up to eight hours upgrading the network and increasing the capacity of the existing lines. EA Network’s field services general manager, Tony Hannah, said by increasing resources they more than halved the number of outages to complete the work. The bulk of the upgrade was completed yesterday with a further day, planned for April 22, to complete the work. Fords Road residents were notified weeks before the outage to enable them to make alternative plans.

Super increase Increases in New Zealand superannuation and veteran’s payments from April 1 “will help with food and power”, President of Age Concern, Ashburton, Jan McClelland, says. Food costs are “really high throughout New Zealand and Mid Canterbury is no different.”

McClelland said. She welcomed the NZ Super increases which will assist with essential foods such as vegetables, bread, milk, and cheese.

“All incremental increases will help the basic needs of our elderly,” she said. From April 1 payments have increased to $768.92 each before tax or $672.22 each after M tax for a married couple who both qualify, $506.64 before tax or $436.94 after M tax for a single person living alone, and $466.03 before tax or $403.33 after M tax for a single person sharing accommodation. The first full payment at the new rate take effect on April 13.

Council considers covering costs for hard-hit retailers

Embattled retailers in Ashburton have pleaded with council for financial support as the effects of the CBD upgrades begin to sting.

As construction continues, constructive talks were had in council chambers this week, with the Retailers’ Advisory Group putting forward a proposal for financial coverage and further mitigation measures in a public forum at Wednesday’s Ashburton District Council meeting.

Businesses located in the centre of the town have been hampered by ongoing roadworks, construction, and restricted access to East Street, as part of Ashburton’s $15 million town centre upgrades.

Council later deliberated over the proposal in closed session.

The project is expected to be completed in November.

Some traders have previously compared the situation to “another Covid lockdown”.

The group pleaded with council for support on Wednesday and any further measures to mitigate disruption.

“The disruption is causing a lot of strain on a lot of businesses,” group spokesman Chris Redmond said.

“Sales and customer numbers are dropping significantly.”

There were fears that residents and shoppers would become less tolerant over the coming months and avoid the CBD altogether.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown hoped it would not reach that point prior to completion of the work.

“Let’s hope they do that in eight months’ time because it will be finished by then,” he said.

Richard Wilson, of Sparrows Ltd, said the loyalty from local

shoppers had been significant.

“We’re very thankful for that, but it has been difficult,” he said.

“We’re just trying to minimise that.”

Fellow retailer Bob McDonald said it was the elderly that had been the most inhibited by the state of the CBD. The group accepted the necessity of the upgrades which were going to bring the Mid Canterbury town “into the future”.

Redmond added that the upgrades were also affecting the public, especially the elderly who required access to essential

services in the middle of town.

Brown, alongside other councillors, acknowledged the burden for retailers in the CBD. “We know there’s disruption,” he said “There was just no good time to do it.”

Ashburton Ward councillor Leen Braam asked the group whether there was a better way to have gone about the project.

Redmond accepted there was not.

“It’s just another thing on top of another thing,” he said.

“We just need some help with it.”

Art awards: The people have spoken

Only ever seeing her artwork in her small house, Lucy Dolan Kang was in awe the moment her recycled woollen blanket went up on the white walls of the Ashburton Art Gallery.

The Lyttelton artist entered her artwork Cloudburst in the recent Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards 2021, taking out the people’s choice award.

It was a clear win for Dolan Kang’s artwork, receiving 358 votes in favour of her work.

Due to the nature of the piece, a traditional studio setting was not a suitable location for the creation.

A concrete patio was the artist’s work space for months.

“I found this a lot of fun, it’s more harmonious with my life

than a lot of my other works, “I was right in there amongst it,” Dolan Kang said.

With a process of bleach and dyes on the woollen blanket, it pushed the boundaries of what the material could sustain.

It created an unpredictability that paid off.

“Dyes don’t behave as well as [people] think,” she said.

The woollen blanket couldn’t handle the amounts of bleach used, causing the disintegration of the material.

Dolan King used the traditional Japanese mending technique, sashiko, to strengthen the blanket.

“It was falling apart, the artwork demanded it,” she said.

Dolan King hopes to sell the artwork, admitting her house is already full of her art, but there is a spot for Cloudburst in her kitchen if the need arises.

Shutdown and boil water notice planned for Rakaia Rakaia is about to slip into water watch mode.

Rakaia residents will have to restrict water use for around eight hours on Monday and they’ll also be on a boil water notice for several days as part of the upgrade of the town’s drinking water service.

Ashburton Contracting Ltd (ACL) will raise Rakaia’s bore water head above ground later this month as part of district-wide upgrades, which will require the bore to be switched off from 9am on April 19 for an expected 6 to 8 hours.

Rakaia’s bore needs to be raised above ground to retain a secure bore water status.

Following the Havelock North inquiry, there is now a greater emphasis on risk assessment for water supplies. In Havelock North in 2016, a campylobacter outbreak caused up to four deaths, with at least 5000 falling ill. It was traced to two bores in the supply system.

A Government inquiry highlighted failures and water supply shortcomings. It recommended mandatory treatment of all public drinking water supplies in New Zealand.

It also called for the establishment of a dedicated drinking water regulatory authority.

Although drinking water will still be available to Rakaia residents during the work, they will need to restrict their water use as much as practical while the upgrades are taking place.

As a safety precaution, a boil water notice will be in place for the scheme from 9am on April 19 until 10pm on April 23.

Boil water notices require three consecutive days of clear test results into order for the notice to be removed, and this is why the notice will be in place until April 23.

Residents will need to boil their drinking water and water used in food preparation or for hygiene purposes for one minute before consuming.

The actual length of the shutdown may be subject to change on the day, depending on the conditions encountered when work begins.

Rakaia residents who’d like to receive a text alert from the council about the shutdown can text their postcode to ‘4196’.

All residents can also opt into the free service to receive important information about their area of the district.

Travel bubble runs on the board, please

O

K, so the much-anticipated travel bubble with Australia has been given the green light. Are you excited? Or still a little gun-shy about making a trip across the ditch straight away in what remains an unpredictable and volatile Covid-19 world?

To be honest, I still sit in economy, row N – and that’s N for nervous.

I’ve got no real desire to immediately jump on a plane to Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast or wherever from April 19 when the quarantine-free travel with Australia begins.

Yes, I know thousands of Kiwis feel much differently, with many having apparently already booked to head to Australia, especially in time for the school holidays. And it really is a Christmas-come-early scenario for friends, families and loved ones being able to reunite again. It’s also a massive fillip for our faltering tourism and hospitality industry, who are crying out for big-spending Australians heading into winter.

You can’t knock people’s excitement, and nor should we because it could be a game changer and a life saver for many, but let’s not forget that the bubble announcement has come with a flyer-beware warning, saying people would need to stay put if either country or a state went into lockdown.

That’s the bit that will worry many. How many of us could afford to add an extra three days minimum to our holiday if there was a virus outbreak and you went into lockdown? Would you be prepared to cough up thousands personally because of a Government-enforced stay over? In that scenario, your much-awaited holiday could spiral out of control in a nanosecond.

But if you’re flexible with nothing to lose, no time and money restrictions, then no worries. But how many travellers are that carefree? Or how many wouldn’t give a hoot about having to cope with the tiring inconvenience of longggggggggggg queues, wearing masks, undergoing temperature checks?

Look, maybe I’m being too negative and a nervous Nigel because the travel bubble, generally, really is fantastic news.

But it’ll also be good to sit back, watch and wait. I want to see some travel bubble runs on the board with no drama, no delays, no lockdowns, and no issues.

What both countries need right now is a booming travel bubble to lift confidence to confirm that trans-Tasman travel is indeed back – and, most importantly, it’s trouble free.

Maybe then, I’ll think about hoping over the ditch.

Magic Bus maybe

ll good things must come to an end.

That’s what happened over Easter weekend.

We packed up ‘Nigel’ the caravan for the season.

Talk about put a downer on a super weekend! How good was the weather?

Luckily, we missed a lot of the strong winds experienced in town. Sunday evening was beautiful and warm at Rangitata, so much so, that we were sitting outside the gazebo enjoying the star show above.

The weather was not the only highlight of the weekend; it was overshadowed by a four-year-old’s Easter Egg hunt.

Boy things have certainly changed since I was a wee fella. We got a homemade icing sugar Easter egg and a boiled egg with a smiley face drawn on it.

Sunday morning, we all scoffed through our breakfast and Granddad took Maddy for a ride on the motorbike while the rest of us hid a bunch of chocolate and plastic eggs around our campsite.

The location of the eggs was marked with an ‘X’ on an expertly drawn map that Manda Van Gough had sketched up.

Initially, Maddy looked a bit overwhelmed by it all and had some trouble figuring out the map.

The excitement levels grew as the hunt progressed and once Maddy realised the plastic eggs could be cracked open and contained some coins, they were met with as much enthusiasm as the chocolate ones.

She now has enough chocolate to see her through to next Easter!

A fair amount of the world’s problems are solved in the evenings, while rehydrating in the gazebo.

During one of those discussions, we did our best to solve an issue that we have with Nigel. We need more space and have been thinking we would quite like to upgrade to a Jayco type caravan. One that has wings that pop out either end, containing beds, therefore leaving the bulk of the caravan for living area.

“Hang on, what about an old bus?” the father-in-law asked.

“Strip out the seats, fire in some carpet, put a double bed down one end and bunks at the other end and fill the rest

The idea has some merit.

Let’s face it, we were happy to leave Nigel and the awning set up for the season at Rangi and we weren’t really interested in hooking him up and taking off anywhere for the weekend. We are happy to rent a house, like we do in Hanmer or stay in a motel when we go away anywhere else.

So maybe we could have an old bus parked up there instead of the caravan.

I could see it now. Sitting on an old couch in the middle of the bus, disco lights spinning, Maddy behind the wheel taking us on an imaginary Magical Mystery Tour with The Who’s ‘Magic Bus’ on the sound system.

First job, make sure the horn is disconnected!

t’s fun when you have a question up your sleeve that surprises the person you ask.

You don’t necessarily try to catch them out, but to seek a response to something that’s been troubling you.

I had a question for our local MP. I didn’t know the answer, but the issue had been annoying me.

How do you reconcile Timaru at one end of the electorate with Ashburton at the other?

They’re as different as chalk and cheese, as night is to day, as the Crusaders are to the Blues.

Last week I asked MP, Jo Luxton. She didn’t have the answer but gave it some thought.

I’m really asking what Ashburton and Timaru have in common besides being lumped into the same electorate? There’s

nothing, yet we’re joined at the hip, so let’s deregister the surgeon.

The reality is we’re only an hour away, but rarely do our paths cross.

We’ve been married at first sight, like the tawdry TV series, so it’s time to get a divorce or have an affair with the electorate north of here.

Someone in the electoral commission decided to put us together.

It was revenge for a bad night of internet dating.

They were part of a team that designed the camel.

But they’re wrong, totally wrong.

If you cross a hamburger with a computer you get a big mac, but if you cross Mid and South Canterbury you only get wet.

I admit there’re synergies between Mid and South when it comes to farming.

Neighbours on both side of the Rangitata face the same issues, challenges and overdrafts.

And when the Vintage Car Club goes

on a rally, they’re more likely to end up in Geraldine than Darfield.

Then there are people like me, born in Ashburton, but were taught Latin at Timaru Boys’ High. Hopwood, decline nauta!

Fat lot of good it did.

But traditionally when Mid Cantabrians have cash register eyes, we travel north to Christchurch or fly to Australia.

Remember those days before we went into isolation? We don’t motor to Richard Pearce and catch the one flight to Wellington.

Returning to my problem.

Because some boffin in the Beehive decided that Caroline Bay was the riviera of the south and Lake Hood didn’t exist, we’re connected electorally.

We can cry at the wailing wall of injustice, but it won’t make any difference.

The electorate is totally artificial so we can surely add bits to it. I’d like Forsyth Barr stadium, the riverside market in Christchurch and Waiheke Island attached.

We can ditch Washdyke and be grateful Gloriavale is on the West Coast.

Now the solution.

The most boring journey in New Zealand is State Highway One to Timaru.

The same highway to Christchurch is almost as bad but at least it’s going north.

So the answer is to add glamour and beauty to the journey south.

Make it our Route 66. It needs a manicure and makeover.

We want razz-ma-tazz from Ash Vegas to Timaru in the 10 Year Plan.

Call it the Meghan and Harry Highway and start with place names; How Are You Feeling, Ealing?

Drive Your Ferrari through Orari Are You A Starter, Rangitata?

Filthy Luca at Temuka Roll Us A Joint, Pleasure Point.

If the flat, tedious highway can become a motorists’ mecca, then we’ll feel more connected, earn some tourist dollars and start to make sense out of Rangitata.

Scarecrows return to Methven

Scarecrows will be popping up all around Methven again ahead of the annual Scarecrow Trail.

Every year in the April school holidays participants hunt for the scarecrows around Methven, trying to guess what character each scarecrow represents and vote for their favourite, with prizes for the most correct entries and the best scarecrow.

The scarecrow trail has been running since 2006, and has been organised by Gillian Heald and Karyn Robertson since 2013, and has attracted around 2000 participants in some years.

Last year the popular event had to be postponed due to the Covid Level 4 lockdown and was instead held in the October holidays.

The organisers wanted to return the Scarecrow Trail to the April holidays slot, but had concerns the scarecrow makers may

be reluctant to launch into creative mode again so soon and had planned to have just 20 this year.

This year the scarecrows will resemble children’s book characters and after the request for expressions of interest was sent out any fears were quickly erased with renewed support from sponsors and a flurry of entries.

Due to the high level of interest, the organisers were able to again extend the limit on entries to 40 scarecrow locations to make the trail manageable for participants.

Those who have signed up for the trail are now busy preparing their scarecrow creations to be ready for display from April 17 until May 2, when people will be able to meander around Methven in search of the scarecrows.

Trail maps and entry forms for $10 per group are available from the Methven iHub or Four Square Supermarket.

It is a community not-for-profit event and all proceeds will go to a local charity.

EA Networks payout should see $140 in customer pockets Electricity consumers in Mid Canterbury will receive $6.4 million from EA Networks over the next month.

The total value includes a $2.9 million consumer discount and an additional $3.5 million one-off refund.

EA Networks has acknowledged its distribution prices were incorrectly set higher than they should have been in 2020.

The prices equate to about three per cent of annual electricity charges for a standard residential customer.

Chief executive Roger Sutton said that the one-off refund payment returns any over-charge to customers.

“Our priority has been to refund customers as soon as possible, including with interest,” he said.

“We apologise to everyone for this mistake. While our prices were reduced last year, they should have been even lower.”

The discount payment customers receive is based on the amount of electricity used across the last financial year, with larger users receiving larger discounts proportional to their spend.

Similarly, the refund will be based proportionally on electricity consumption.

“A standard residential customer should expect to receive credits totalling about $140 including GST,” Sutton said.

“While the timing of the payments may vary slightly by electricity retailers,

“We are very pleased to be in a position to pay a discount to our customers this year,” he said.

hese are the first images of MG’s vision of the future – the Cyberster concept car.

Set to debut at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show later this month, the Cyberster – developed by the team at the MG Advanced Design Centre in London – is a two-door, two-seater sports car recalling the brand’s tradition, drawing a number of styling cues from

the classic MGB Roadster.

It features classic round MG headlights, coupled with a slim grille design, along with interactive Magic Eye headlights that open when switched on.

Other striking details of the MG Cyberster are the laser belt LED strip down the side of the car and the outline of the door, which follows the direction of the LED strip.

Its powerful sports car profile has a distinct two-stage shoulder line, with a flattenedkamm tail rear.

The tail lamps are of LED construction and are integrated flat into the rear of the car, projecting a digital image that echoes MG’s British heritage.

Carl Gotham, Director of SAIC Design Advanced London, said: “The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into

MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting edge technology and advanced design.

“Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA and Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us.”

The Cyberster’s intelligent all-electric architecture will enable an EV range of 800km and deliver a 0-100km/h time of less than three seconds.

MSV have announced details regarding details of the eagerly-anticipated C8 Corvette.

“The Corvette is one of the world’s most recognisable sports cars and over-delivers with regards to performance expected of such a machine,” said ttributes,” said the General Manager of GMSV New Zealand, Matthew Taylor.

“It is the epitome of a true icon as it has heritage, performance and unparalleled desirability – generation after generation.”

The Corvette was introduced in 1953 and this, the eighth generation, is the first to feature a mid-engine configuration and – most importantly for Kiwi performance enthusiasts – is the first time it is available as factory-built right-hand-drive.

To celebrate the local launch of the new model, a special Carbon Edition will be available in Australia and New Zealand.

The unique offering is based off a 3LT Coupe and will feature hand-picked interior trims, premium wheels and brake calliper package, an exclusive build plate and owners pack.

“Full specifications for MY22 have not yet been released globally, but we anticipate being in a position to reveal more information in the second quarter, as well as pricing for the Carbon Edition,” said Taylor.

Cruising in style TOYOTA HILUX SR5 CRUISER

ecently Lisa from Toyota NZ had a variety of the latest diesel double-cab Hilux in the South Island, and kindly arranged for some to be dropped off at different times at Ashburton Toyota for me to drive.

Tasks undertaken/drives done included helping out with a large house contents shift, towing a large pop-top camper, as well as trips on all sorts of roads/tracks from the Alps to the ocean.

No mud-plugging though!

These latest Hilux have a bolder front on look about them.

As well, all diesel models get a beefed up 2.8-litre engine that delivers 10kW more power and 50Nm more torque, or 150kW and 500Nm (from 1600-2800rpm) respectively for those with 6-speed autos only, as the torque figure for the six-speed manual versions stays at 420Nm. So what’s been done to the engine to get this?

Well, how about a redesigned cylinder

head, strengthened block, new pistons, a larger, heavy-duty turbocharger and new common-rail injection system.

With 18 different Hilux variants with four specification levels in the line-up (ten of which are 4WD diesels), there’s a model to suit a wide variety of wants and needs.

The top-of-the-line SR5 Cruiser featured today comes only as a double cab auto, but with the choice of either 2WD PreRunner or 4WD. It’s recognisable by the matte black surround that highlights the rather dominant grille, the night-time excellent, self-levelling LED headlights, side steps and 18-inch black tinted alloy wheels – and of course its signature, on each side front door to completes its onroad or track presence.

In keeping with the Cruiser name the cabin has a premium, quality, sure to please feel about it.

There’s the very comfortable two-tone, perforated leather seats, of which the drivers and front passengers have heating

and power adjustment.

As well they who travelled in the back seats were also happy with the comfort and space therein.

The Cruiser gets a unique and very smart looking instrument cluster with white numbers and pointers on a grey-metallic background, along with concert-quality sound from a nine-speaker JBL audio system.

The smart multimedia system with its 8-inch touchscreen also has knobs complementing this for the easiest possible operation.

Lots of stuff has also been done to reduce noise, vibration and harshness, including a changed rear suspension set-up with revised shock-absorbers and springs (including an extra leaf) for a more supple, absorbent ride, the results of which were particularly noticeable with the ride quality of the Cruiser, with its larger wheels and 265/60R18 Dunlop Grandtrek rubber.

Plus the hydraulic power steering has

a new variable-flow control pump that makes it lighter for slower speed driving, but then also firmer, with better feel at open road speeds.

All of which results in what you may expect from a Cruiser – suitably agile handling, unladen ride comfort within a quiet cabin with well suppressed road vibrations to match up with easy driveability about town and for longer distances.

For those long drives you might choose either the normal drive or perhaps the power mode to provide even sharper acceleration for a more engaging drive on undulating and winding roads, or when towing heavier stuff.

The fuel consumption in diesel Hilux variants is said to be 7.9L/100km for 4WD models.

While effortlessly towing the camper, the trip computer showed 10.2L/100km.

All of the above has been achieved without affecting the 4WD Hilux’s renowned off-road performance for its impressive wheel articulation and ground clearance remain, while active traction control and both a rear automatic limited-slip-diff and rear diff lock are standard fare.

All Hilux have the Toyota Safety Sense package which includes autonomous emergency braking for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with road sign assist, to which both SR5 models add front and rear parking sensors.

FINALE Just like Kiwis, the trusty and iconic Hilux range has evolved and adapted over the decades. Now with this more powerful turbo-diesel, even more capability, safety features, technology and comfort, this tougher-looking but plush Cruiser fits very nicely into the range as Toyota lines up to once again be at the one at the top of the very hotly contested ute market.

Carston right on song

Leading Canterbury trainer Andrew Carston enjoyed a happy day out at his former home track of Ashburton on Wednesday, when he produced two winners on the programme.

Carston, who trained in partnership with Jan Hay on Racecourse Road during the 2014 and 2015 racing season, has carved his own mark on the industry, particularly in the South Island since then, and is a frequent visitor to the winners’ circle.

On Wednesday he picked up victories with Severine and Caitlyn Jay, pushing himself into the top 10 trainers in the country in the process with 24 wins for the season, and the promise of a

whole heap more to come.

The win of Severine was just desserts for a strong run of recent form and could be in part put down to a typically perfect ride from legendary jockey Chris Johnson, who plotted the perfect path through the field to win by a narrow margin.

“She dropped back from a stakes race last start, I was pretty confident she would run well,” Carston said.

“She has had a fantastic preparation, she has done nothing wrong, she has been a model of consistency. It was a good ride by Chris, she got in on the minimum (weight) and got the job done.”

While Severine’s win was expected, Carston admitted to being a little bit surprised at the effort of Caitlyn Jay in the race prior, dashing away to win easily.

A random little computer system that sits somewhere in Christchurch and churns out barrier draws for harness races in New Zealand has thrown a spanner in the works of tonight’s New Zealand Derby at Addington.

Pre-barrier draw, the talk was all boom colt Krug, a dominant force in the three-year-old ranks who looked to have the Group One at his mercy, provided he didn’t cop a bad marble.

Yet, as if a sign of Murphy’s Law, Krug has indeed drawn a bad barrier – the outside of the front line – and now, what a week ago seemed close to a forgone conclusion, isn’t quite as clear-cut.

And so, one of the greatest features of the harness racing season has become a whole lot more interesting.

On form, momentum and pure arrogance, Krug is still the horse to beat.

With champion driver Blair Orange in the bike, there’s still every reason to believe he’s the horse to

beat. The only kicker now – that task won’t be so easy.

And co-trainer Cran Dalgety’s assessment of things probably gives an even stronger indication of his chances too.

Five Mid Canterbury senior netball sides will get the chance to blow out some cobwebs ahead of the season at the Inter Centre competition in Ashburton this weekend.

Five Mid Canterbury senior netball sides will be out to put their pre-season training into practice this weekend at Inter Centre Whakataetae which is being held at the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton on Saturday and Sunday.

The annual event, which allows teams from within the greater Canterbury area to come together to play against each other before the regional season begins, kicks off tomorrow and runs into Sunday with plenty of good level netball to be viewed throughout the course of the tournament.

Taking in teams from Christchurch, North Canterbury, South Canterbury, Selwyn and Mid Canterbury – 13 teams will be in town for the event this year with the locals providing the most numbers.

Ashburton College, United, Methven, Hampstead and Celtic all have teams entered in the event which is run, in large, by Christchurch Netball Centre –

Teams will play up to four games across the two days of play, with the matches a good opportunity for coaches to install new combinations and put them into practice as well as an opportunity to build on momentum for upcoming seasons.

Matches are held over four, 12-minute quarters with extended squads of up to 12 registered players allowed in each team. Thankfully, for the locals sides, there is only one hometown clash scheduled for the weekend, with United and Hampstead set to lock horns on Sunday afternoon in the final round of play for the weekend.

But it won’t be just the players and coaches getting a chance to have a hitout before the season, with Mid Canterbury Netball providing a number of umpires for the event who will also be keen to get some game time under their belt before the season proper begins.

Matches begin tomorrow at 10am and 11.15 in the morning then 1pm and 2.15 in the afternoon with the same centre pass-off times on Sunday as well.

Mid Canterbury swimmer, Bree Middleton, has made her mark at the New Zealand Swimming Championships in Auckland already this week, with a silver medal on its way back home on the plane with her.

Middleton was one quarter of a strong Wharenui Swimming Club team who picked up a silver medal in the four by 100 metre mixed medley at the championships, which are being held at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre.

The group produced a great performance to be in contention throughout the final, but were unable to peg back the leaders from the North Shore Swimming Club, finishing second by four seconds.

It was a tight race to the line with the second North Shore Swimming Club side, who were just half a second behind the Wharenui team, in finishing third.

The 17-year-old relocated herself from Mount Hutt College in Methven this year to attend St Andrew’s College in order to further her swimming career. This week she is competing in a number of events over the course of the championship, all in her favoured discipline of freestyle.

Earlier in the week she picked up a top 20 placing in the women’s 50 metre freestyle event, which placed her in the B Final for the category where she finished out of the top three, but still produced a solid swim to see her claim a high national ranking in the event.

The championships run through until Saturday night.

Two massive days of swimming await more than 300 competitors who will take to the pool at the EA Networks Centre this weekend for the annual Ashburton Splash event.

While the majority of the focus this week has been on the New Zealand Swimming

Nationals in Auckland which finish tomorrow, the next level down of swimmers have been gearing up for a trip to Ashburton for this weekend.

And like so many events around the country held at this time of the year, organisers of the popular event are looking forward to hosting it again after last year’s event was cancelled due to Covid-19.

“We are really excited to be hosting this once again,” Ashburton Swim Club presi-

dent, Anne Tait said.

Run as an open tier event, the Ashburton Splash sees many familiar faces coming to compete from around the greater Canterbury swimming region – but a number of people are making an extra long trip to be a part of the action.

“The event has attracted 323 competitors, from not only across our immediate Canterbury region, but also Parnell, Wanaka, Hokitika and Greymouth Swimming

Swimmers from across New Zealand will converge in Ashburton this weekend for the Ashburton Splash.

clubs, making for what will be a huge couple of days.”

On the local front, 24 members of the Ashburton Swim Team will be in action at Ashburton Splash with action beginning on Saturday at 2om and then again on Sunday with the first session beginning at 9am and then the second at 2.30pm.

Tait said spectators were more than welcome to come down to the EA Networks Centre to check out the action.
