Tourism group over and out

Rate rise pain not evenly shared

Rates in the Ashburton District will rise 6.28 per cent in the next financial year, but the pain of that increase will be felt unevenly across the district.

District councillors wrapped up day five of their budget discussions on Wednesday and through a raft of small prunings and the use of reserves funds managed to carve 2 per cent off the 8.27 per cent increase they originally had on the board.

Hardest hit in the coming year will be Methven residential property owners, with rates on an average value residential property set to rise 14.88 per cent and an average value commercial property by 12.14 per cent. The contributor to that rise is the village’s waste water rate as Methven moves to become part of the district-wide ‘water club’.

This sees all rating areas now charged the same amount for wastewater services, $449.10 per property. Drinking water charges have undergone a similar grouping in a previ-

ous budget, and that year, the weight of the increase fell on Lake Hood.

Ashburton homeowners will see their rates rise 4.55 per cent, Rakaia (lump sum paid), 6.41 per cent and Rakaia no lump sum paid, 4.87 per cent.

The most significant areas of increase in next year’s budget come in the cost of democracy, up more than $600,000, economic development, $200,000, wastewater, $400,000 and drinking water, $300,000.

Community wellbeing has taken the greatest hit, dropping from a $289,380 spend to just $57,491 next year.

Over the next 10 years, the council will increase its debt levels through external borrowing to cover major projects such as the Ashburton Civic Centre and Library.

This was initially budgeted to cost $51.6 million, but that budget has now increased to $56 million.

In the current year, rates were planned to rise by 4.88 per cent, but this was reduced by 2.5 per cent as part of the council’s Covid-19 response to community need.

The budget, which is year one of the council’s long-term plan, will go out for public consultation in mid-March. There are likely to be several opportunities for ratepayers to meet with councillors at community meetings and open days.

For more than 10 years Experience Mid Canterbury has flown the Ashburton District’s tourism flag, but it has now voted itself out of existence.

Over many years the district has been promoted by a range of promotions groups, but latterly these have carried the title Ashburton District Tourism and then Experience Mid Canterbury.

Funding was been provided by the Ashburton District Council and while the tourism groups were originally standalone entities, in 2013 it became a councilcontrolled organisation, reporting six-monthly to the council on its performance.

For some district councillors, the money granted the organisation each year – around $280,000 – was seen as excessive, and they questioned the merits of having a group that was funded by the council, but was one that worked for the benefit of individual tourism operators.

In recent years Experience Mid Canterbury has come under increasing pressure from the council and last year opted to change its model and become part of the regional promotions group, Christchurch New Zealand. And that signalled the organisation’s demise.

In December the trust board wound itself up and its dismantling will now be left in the hands of the council.

Accounts for the past two years are still outstanding, council business support manager Paul Brake said and once those were signed off any funds that remained would be transferred to the council.

At Thursday’s council meeting, chief executive Hamish Riach signalled that more change could be in the wind for the promotion of the district, with the current contract with Christchurch New Zealand expiring on June 30.

“We’ve told them we’re in a review process and a separate report will be coming to the council in March.”

Donors the heart of foundation Tribute has been paid to Mid Canterbury donors at the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation scholarship awards.

In her address at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre last week, AACF executive officer Sandi Wood, offered a heartfelt thank-you to donors who are “at the heart of what we do”.

“Their generosity enables us to deliver benefits to the community that will well surpass all of our lifetimes,” she said. “By choosing to donate to Advance Ashburton, they have invested in the future for today and tomorrow.”

At the function, attended by 150 people, 32 scholarships were awarded, amounting to nearly $88,000.

The community foundation, one of 17 in New Zealand, offers a simple and effective way for local people to support the causes they’re most passionate about, Sandi Wood pointed out.

“Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference to the local community and will continue to

create benefits that will last generations,” she said.

Established in 2003 by accountant Neil Sinclair, the fund has reached nearly $14 million and is distributed quarterly. However, the scholarships are unique and special.

Since establishment the Foundation has awarded 245 scholarships totalling over half a million dollars, all thanks to locals choosing to support the education of the youth in the Mid Canterbury District.

Through Advance Ashburton donors are able to determine and fund the causes they love. Sandi Wood explained AACF works with them to identify those causes “whether it be a passion for heritage, community, culture, wellbeing, environmental issues, music, supporting youth, education, health or something else”.

“Scholarships are a big part of what we do, offering scholarships for those pursuing tertiary studies, personal development and industry trade,” Sandi said.

The process opens in September for applications, closing mid-Oc-

tober. A voluntary committee and interview panels, comprising AACF trustees, co-opted members and invited guests then read the applications, interview, short-list and recommend the recipients to the foundation board for final approval.

Sandi Wood says she was blown away by the calibre of this year’s people.

“It’s overwhelming the things they fit into their lives through academic study, sport and contributing to the community.

“The resounding message we receive from the scholars is that knowing the community really cares about them and is backing them helps keep them focused through the tough times that studying can bring.”

It’s a particularly gratifying moment when the scholarship winners meet the donors and express their appreciation for the financial gift they’ve received. That opportunity presented itself last week at the award ceremony, Sandi commented.

This year’s recipients Ariana Tipu and Aidan Campbell received the Alister Smyth Scholarship. Neilvrod Alombro was awarded the Glass Family Scholarship, Josh Jones received the Tinwald Club Scholarship, Grace Leahy was awarded the Van der Kley Scholarship, Aimee Elliott was the recipient of the Cameron Family Scholarship, Benjamin MacLeod and Kate Donald were awarded the Parsons Family Scholarship, Ellen Donaldson and Toby Lee received the Ian Glassey Memorial Scholarship. Ainsley Braam-Smith, Diana Barbu, Scott Kelland and Jemma Donnelly were awarded UFS Scholarships. Turning pet dogs into the perfect pooches

If your dog is misbehaving or could just use more guidance in being a good boy, there is no better guidance than the Mid Canterbury Dog Training Club.

The group are a small club, but with lot of experience, and are more than happy to share their knowledge with other people who are interested.

The club has been around for over 30 years – and it’s all done for the love of the dog.

As well as getting together and preparing their own dogs for championships, they also hold courses for the public.

Their most popular course is the domestic class, aimed to help both dog and owner. It is an eight-week course, open to dogs of all ages and all breeds.

They focus on things as small as using a lead better to gaining a better understanding of your dog’s body language.

Debbie Woods is the club’s events co-ordinator, instructor, long-time member and dog lover.

She has been training dogs for almost 30 years, most of these through the Mid Canterbury Dog Training Club.

She herself has owned a variety of different breeds over the years, only helping her gain experience and sharing that knowledge to other people to support them training their own dogs.

Understanding that you have to adapt to the dog and its breed, Woods is a strong believer in the fact you have to work with a dog’s nature, not change it.

If you get a beagle, it will most likely always have its nose on the ground, they are a born sniffer dog,” Woods said.

As of recently they have been able to secure the Methven dog park to host their domestic class in the coming months.

In past they had been inundated with interest for domestic classes in Methven with no real idea of a venue.

The Methven Resort came to the aid in letting the club use their grounds for training, but securing the venue of the

Methven dog park will be a big help in letting the club support the wider Ashburton District.

The reason the club fundraises and tries to secure sponsorships regularly is to help with operational costs such as rent for venues for their courses and to update equipment.

Dog agility equipment needs to be changed often due to regular changes in safety regulations. The club is audited frequently on their equipment to ensure safety for the dogs.

One of the plans on the club’s agenda is trying to have their own area with a clubhouse,

where they can keep their equipment set up year-round.

They are currently based at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds, which they are incredibly grateful for the support and the use of those facilities.

The club is contactable through the Mid Canterbury Dog Training Club’s Facebook page and anyone who would like to join, or head to an event, will be welcomed.

Being competitive isn’t the main objective of the club, it’s about spending time and building a bond with your dog.

Dog agility champs If you like dogs and don’t mind being around nearly 300 of them, then this weekend’s event at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds is perfect for you.

This weekend is the Mid Canterbury Dog Agility Championships, which will be showing off the skills from dogs off all ages, breed and ability level.

All-up they have 1090 entries registered, with 287 dogs making up these entries.

A dog can be entered in more than one event with multiple events over the two-day event.

The event is free for the public to watch with organisers encouraging people to bring a chair and the family, describing it as a perfect family outing.

This weekend’s championship is all about the dogs’ agility and getting through the course and not racking up any faults, with a focus on speed, thrown in as well.

Dogs place in events if they clear the obstacles in the fastest times.

Even the ones that clear all the obstacles still get a certificate, no matter how fast they go.

All dogs are measured before the events to ensure the jumps and other obstacles are at an acceptable height for them.

There are four categories for the championship: starters, novice, intermediate and seniors. These categories are based on skill levels, not the age or breed of the dog.

While Saturday is all about speed and agility, Sunday gets a little more technical as dogs make their way over jumpers with only jumps and tunnels on the course.

This year there will be three judges, one each from Wellington, Southland and Christchurch.

A prizegiving will be held at the end of each day’s events.

So, if you and the family have nothing to do on Saturday or Sunday or just really like dogs, the Mid Canterbury Dog Agility Championships are for you.

The events start at 8am and continue throughout the days.

Mt Hutt predator programme hailed a success

Staff at Mt Hutt Skifield say the arrival of a lone kea on the field last winter signals the success of their three-year predator trapping programme.

Over that time more than 500 stoats, possums and rats have been trapped and staff are crossing their fingers that last year’s sole bird indicates that after an absence of two years, the birds will finally feel confident about making a return to the mountain.

This year’s lone bird, believed to be a young male, stayed on the mountain for two or three weeks.

Mt Hutt sales and marketing co-ordinator Richie Owen is one of a team of staff who volunteer to lay and monitor traps on the mountain, and when he spoke to the Ashburton Biodiversity Group on Tuesday, he said his group was feeling very positive about the success of the project.

“We recognised a decline in kea numbers and this was a major concern so we got some funding

through the company, and bought 50 traps. We now have 85 in place and every time we go out we’re finding five or six carcases,” he said.

The trapping area has been extended into the Mt Hutt Bike Park and with traps now spread over a wide area, it meant quite a lot of work for the volunteers, but it was something they were all committed to, Owen said.

“This is all about bringing back the kea. We used to have 20 to 25 birds in the area all the time practically until three years ago, and then there were just three young males who were the last ones to leave. You didn’t notice the numbers dwindling, but at the end, it just switched off.”

There were sizeable kea populations at nearby Porters Pass and at the Remarkables field, so there was no reason why the birds would not return to Mt Hutt when predator numbers dropped, Owen said.

Mt Hutt Skifield owner, NZ Ski is committed to predator control on its skifields, giving a substantial amount of money to the Kea Conservation Trust each year.

Domain birds ready to take flight

They may have been birds of many different feathers, but the residents in the Ashburton Domain aviary have been a family, albeit in captivity.

But as families do, those birds are packing up and will be moving on – together, to a new home in Timaru’s Caroline Bay aviary and their old home is about to be demolished.

With a major redevelopment plan for the Ashburton Domain on its drawing board, the Ashburton District Council is ready to start work on the removal of the old aviary to make way for a wildlife garden designed to entice birds, butterflies and lizards to the area.

The domain already features a butterfly garden next to the aviary and the council intends to expand this environment to create the wildlife garden.

It is envisaged that a modern walkthrough aviary could be incorporated into the garden at a later date.

The consultation process indicated many people were unhappy with the condition of the old aviary, council community services group manager Steve Fabish said.

“Questions were asked about the place of traditional aviaries in today’s world.

“Given that many people were dissatisfied with the facility’s overall condition, it was decided that a wildlife garden would be a much better option for the domain moving forward, he said.

Once the birds are re-homed

and the aviary is removed, landscaping the area will start, with native plants and some exotic species to wildlife.

“Informal ‘nature play’ and

sensory garden elements may also be incorporated to add interest and offer an educational experience for visitors,” Fabish said.

Birds in the Ashburton Domain Aviary are set to be rehomed with their residence set for demolition.

Lake pollution solution an exercise in caution

Working to control pollution issues in the Ashburton Lakes area is an exercise in caution because of the number of groups potentially involved, says Ashburton District Council district planning manager Ian Hyde.

Finding solutions is a collaborative process, he said, involving

land owners, hut holders, the council, ECan and DOC. A considerable amount of work had been done and was continuing to be done, he said.

“There is no magic bullet solution, but there are steps to be taken to improve the situation and that involves everyone, it’s universal.”

Clemens asked what was being done about the long drop toilets that were still in use at some baches in the Lake Camp and Clearwater settlement and were people being encouraged to move to holding tanks.

Work on the change was on-going and as long drops were taken out of use they were being replaced with a tank system. Discussions were ongoing with hutholders, Hyde said.

“That’s a process of attrition, but is this fast enough?”

The problem was that whatever was being fed into the underground system, it took a long time to filter into the lakes and a long time for a lake to process this and move the material out, he said.

“It’s not a case of stop now and next summer it will be clear.

Even if you make a huge change the effects won’t be immediate.”

Changed focus for zone committee With three vacant seats around Ashburton’s Water Zone committee’s meeting table, some Ashburton District councillors are questioning the group’s value.

The zone committee is a joint committee managed by Environment Canterbury and the council and its role has been to work with the community to develop actions and tactics to deliver on the Canterbury Water Management Strategy. It recommends these actions and tactics to various agencies for implementation.

Currently the committee is advertising for members and councillor Lynette Lovett said it was important to ensure there was a good balance of interests and opinions

around the meeting table. Committee members needed to be people who could contribute in a meaningful way, she said.

With the government now implementing its new feshwater policies, councillor John Falloon questioned how relevant the committee would be in the future.

Its job might change, but its relevance would not, chief executive Hamish Riach said.

“Rather than wider policy we’re trying to refocus them on implementation and doing rather than consideration and policy and in that context we think the zone committees have a very important role to play,” he said.

A health warning was issued for Lake Clearwater last month after potentially toxic bluegreen algae was found in its water.

This is caused by a combination of nutrients in the water (such as nitrogen and phosphorus), and favourable weather conditions (eg increased temperature, calm days).

The warning has since been lifted.

Pushing power underground More than nine-tenths of Ashburton’s power supply has now been installed underground.

Work has just started on undergrounding the power in McMurdo Street, Tinwald, bringing the completed work just a bit closer.

However it’s a gradual task. As power poles need replacing, the power lines are moved underground. It’s achieved progressively as the poles reach the end of their working life.

EA Networks began converting Ashburton’s urban power to underground back in 1985 and now 36 years later, about 92 per cent of the town’s supply is beneath the dirt.

CEO Roger Sutton, says work along McMurdo Street is scheduled for completion within three months and various pockets of the town will also be undergrounded as poles come up for replacement.

The basic task is to dig the trench, lay the cables, check the infrastructure then cover and smooth over.

“It’s been a significant part of what we’ve been doing for the past 20 years. While people might get frustrated with the mess we create, they appreciate the long-term benefits,” Sutton says.

EA Networks has budgeted an average spend of $1.8 million annually to complete the undergrounding work.

The first installation of underground power in Mid Canterbury started in 1978. Methven was chosen and the task of installing the work was completed in 10 years.

“Undergrounding benefited Methven be-

cause of snow and ice during winter. Snow affects overhead lines, but the supply of power is assured underground,” Sutton explained.

In addition to the $1.8 million set aside for urban Ashburton, EA Networks will also allocate $800,000 to upgrade rural state highways to underground power in 2021. The removal of poles and lines along rural state highways began in 2009 and will be completed by 2024.

“It’s made a major difference to the safety of motorists. Without power poles the risk of serious accident has lessened,” Sutton commented.

“Undergrounding has also started in other rural townships with Rakaia nearing 65 per cent completion by March this year and Hinds scheduled for 75 per cent completion in 2021.

He explained that, by converting to underground power, EA Networks can decrease the influence of external factors such as wind, snow and trees causing outages, on its network.

“We can help improve road safety and the natural aesthetics of our region,” Sutton said.

He’s also been able to provide more work for contactors. Because of the uncertainty caused by Covid-19, EA Networks advanced some work to give employment to local civil contracting companies.

“We’ve provided ongoing work which has given assurance during unpredictable times.”

OBITUARY

Ellis Buchanan devoted his life to family, business and Rotary A Mid Canterbury man described as compassionate, humble, generous, kind, loyal and non-judgemental was farewelled by family and friends at the Sinclair Centre yesterday.

Ellis Buchanan was 93 when he died in Ashburton Hospital last week.

His children, Elizabeth and Roger, spoke of their father as a man with a strong sense of compassion and love and devotion to his family. He was a quiet achiever, sensitive and a proud provider for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He also played a major role in the Mid Canterbury business community, in Rotary, locally, nationally and internationally, and as a supportive member of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Ellis was born on November 24, 1927 and attended Borough School and Timaru Boys’ High.

“His passion was for banking and he had a flair for numbers,” Elizabeth and Roger recall.

Ellis joined the National Bank in Ashburton and then moved to the Hutt Valley. He and Betty, his wife, who he married in 1951, settled in Wainuiomata, and the family Volkswagen made the hour-long, round trip, to the Hutt Valley every working day.

However, while banking was his career, his father, Dave, had

other ideas. Dave travelled to the North Island to inform him it was time to take over the family business. Ellis relented and, together with his brother, Doug, ran Buchanan’s Flour Mills Ltd. Ellis was managing director, a position he held until it was sold in 1971.

He then established Buchanan’s Storage Company, a grain consolidation depot for Mid Canterbury farmers, until his retirement in 1997.

Leisure time allowed Ellis and Betty to spend more time with the family, overseas travel, gardening, St Andrew’s Church and his commitment to Rotary.

“Betty, a former school teacher, was very busy with church activities, Inner Wheel and doing her grandchildren’s school projects,” Roger and Elizabeth remember.

Ellis joined Rotary in 1964 and was a foundation director of the Ashburton South Club, now known as Ashburton Plains.

“He was attracted because of the fellowship and the opportunity to serve the community,” his children comment.

He became district governor in 1989-90 and, in subsequent years, served in various international roles such as representing Rotary International at its Council on Legislation in Delhi. He was a member of the International

Committee for World Community Service and, for his dedication and achievements, was awarded Rotary’s highest honour, the Paul Harris Fellowship.

“The fellowship, which he received on three occasions, is a significant award, recognising

outstanding service to the community,” Elizabeth and Roger affirmed. Ellis was made a Life Member of Rotary on his retirement at the end of 2020.

He used his administration skills to benefit St Andrew’s Church. Ellis was a supportive

member of the church, trustworthy, reliable and someone who offered practical and valuable advice when asked.

He supported Betty in her various church activities and loved to work behind the scenes. However, there was one occasion when he displayed his performing skills.

“At the annual church fair dad and a friend dressed up as Steptoe and Son to sell goods from the second-hand stall. Dad was Harold,” his children recalled.

Ellis was also an outstanding swimmer and won medals at local and regional masters’ tournaments up to the age of 90. He was a regular visitor to the EA Networks Swimming Pool.

He was fiercely independent and, when he could no longer drive, he purchased a dazzling green mobility scooter which enabled him to ride around Ashburton and beyond. He became an identity around town and, in 18 months, travelled more than 2000kms. His mobility scooter was positioned at the front of the Sinclair Centre during the funeral.

“Ellis overcame a number of strokes over the last 20 years but, on the final occasion, his illness was one hurdle too many,” Roger and Elizabeth said.

CBD taking great shape

I

f you haven’t been into the Ashburton CBD this week, make sure you brace yourself for when you do.

The usual simple drive down East Street is no longer. Restricted to seemingly one-lane with heavy work being undertaken as part of the CBD revitalisation project.

As someone who lived and worked in the heart of Christchurch in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, I can’t help but feel reminiscent of those times as I look down the road from the top floor of Somerset House.

The sound of contract work being undertaken, the drilling and breaking of asphalt and road. The long winding lines of road cones that stretch almost as far as the eye can see and the general disruption to normal life that can only come about due to something so significant.

Yet, like there was in Christchurch at that particular time, there’s plenty of hope here too.

Already you can start to envisage what the finished product might look a little bit like with wide and expansive pathways already under construction while the road around it is scrapped back to its core in preparation to be replaced.

The removal yesterday of trees from the northern edge of the Arcade on Burnett Street added an unfamiliar light to an often dark little section of the CBD and all of a sudden there seemed like a renewed vigour from those walking around in anticipation of what’s to come.

We’re a long way from being near the completed product.

But the signs and evidence of forward movement should be enough to keep people encouraged.

At numerous points in time we’ve written in these pages about just how good a fresh and vibrant CBD is going to look once the work is finished and every day that passes means we’re another day closer to reaching that point.

But don’t let the work stop you from venturing into town. Yes, you might have to walk a little further than normal in some places and there might be the odd hold up, but remember it’s all for a good reason.

And we need to ensure that we still have all our favourite stores still there when the time does come for completion because it’s going to be a tricky few months ahead.

Happy medium

ecoming overweight later in life will actually help you live longer, researchers say.

Now that got your attention, didn’t it?

Especially if you’re past 50 and enjoy eating and craft beer as much as I do.

A new study finds maybe having a “dad bod” isn’t such a bad thing after all.

Researchers from the Ohio State University say people who enter adulthood at a normal weight and start to pack on the pounds later in life actually live the longest.

The study looked at two generations of Americans, following the residents of one city in Massachusetts and their children for nearly 70 years.

So, it’s a pretty extensive study!

Their findings reveal young adults with a healthy body mass index (BMI) who gradually become overweight, but never obese, have the greatest lifespans.

These adults even lived longer that those who kept a normal BMI throughout their whole life.

I’m picking the key word in that study is ‘obese’.

If you do happen to slip into than category, getting rid of that few extra pounds is definitely good for your health and your confidence, but apparently not for your youthful looks.

Doctors are warning that fat loss accelerates ageing by deflating the cheeks, hollowing the eyes and making the jowls look heavy.

Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin say the appearance that some refer to as “diet face” mainly has to do with the loss of facial fat.

Their study concluded that the traditional theory of facial sagging due to gravity isn’t entirely correct.

While the idea that weakening ligaments in the face could result in some facial ageing, “Perhaps the real culprit … is the loss of fat, both near the surface of the skin and in deeper areas”.

So instead of moving ahead with a diet that could lead to dramatic fat loss, they advise people to lose weight gradually.

And consume plenty of Omega 3 fats, fruit and vegetables as well as key vitamins.

They say their study could someday lead to more effective facelifts.

Clearly the secret is finding a healthy and happy medium in amongst those surveys, eh.

Some readers may look in my direction and say, “Hoops, you could do with some work on your Dad Bod, especially being married to a slightly younger woman, who happens to be just a bit smoking hot”.

To you I say, when you are as naturally romantic (see photo of my Anniversary Card poem) as I am, looks clearly aren’t that important.

Manda and I celebrated our third wedding anniversary on Wednesday.

Those three years have flown by!

Well they have for me anyway; hopefully Manda feels the same way.

Just seems like yesterday we were standing in front of the lovely Mrs Mac and saying our “I dos”.

We’ve had a heap of fun together and we love watching our gorgeous wee daughter growing up.

■■ Cook the kebabs according to directions on the packet.

■■ In a large serving bowl whisk together the lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil.

■■ Soak the onion in a bowl of ice water for 10 minutes. Drain well.

■■ Add the drained onion to the dressing with the tomatoes, cucumber and olives and

mix. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

■■ Crumble the feta cheese over the top of the salad and sprinkle over the sumac.

■■ In a bowl whisk together the yoghurt, lemon zest, parsley and coriander. Serve with the kebabs, salad and pita bread.

One cool Kingswood

E

veryone who went on the Vintage Car Club Annual Rally had a great time, but none more so than David and Linda Parkes.

Along with friends Brian and Lyn Henderson the Parkes travelled in their splendid 1971 HG Holden Kingswood.

David and Linda’s membership of the Vintage Car Club came about many years ago, when they became owners of the 1952 Morris Minor previously owned by Linda’s father, the late Eric Gordon.

The Morris has now been in the family for close to 40 years.

Les Bennett encouraged David and Linda to join the Vintage Car Club, and he put them in touch with the late George Aitken and the late Arthur Wolfreys, both of whom were Morris Minor gurus.

With assistance from these three gentlemen, the Parkes restored the lovely little 4-door Morris and drove it on rallies.

More recently it has been joined in the garage by a restored Morris Minor ute.

The two Minors look great, and have provided many happy motoring moments.

Finding the faithful Minors were a little slow on the open road, David decided he and Linda should look for a bigger car which would be more suited to cruising.

So son-in-law Shane Christie was asked to have a look on Trade Me. He found a gem in Queenstown – the 1971 HG Holden Kingswood.

Here’s how Linda describes what happened next.

“David and I, along with our daughter Angela and Shane, departed Ashburton at 6am one cold May morning in 2017, and headed to Queenstown.

“As soon as we saw the car we knew it was the one for us, so Shane talked turkey and before we knew he was shaking the seller’s hand.

“The seller had tears in his eyes as David and Shane drove out his gate for the return journey in the Holden, the car went well and they enjoyed the drive”.

David and Linda say the car was in pretty good condition, but they have done some minor titivating like re-chroming the bumpers and re-galvanising the scuff plates.

The head lining and the back seat have been re-upholstered.

The Holden, one of the last of the model to come off the production line, was originally fitted with a 186 motor.

Currently it is powered by a 202 motor installed by a previous owner, but David and Linda will replace that with a 186

motor, to bring the car back to its original specifications.

They are keen to maintain the car’s originality.

With the Holden, which falls into the Vintage Car Club P60–P80 category, David’s wish to have a great cruising car has come about.

But that’s not to say the Morris Minors aren’t getting out of the garage.

The ute has scored a prize on a commercial rally, and on occasions Linda has driven the 4-door Minor on ladies runs.

David and Linda say “we’ve spent many happy hours cruising around our lovely district and enjoying the company of fellow club members, and now we’re retired we plan on doing a lot more cruising”.

Open door policy applies

The call has gone out to female footballers as the women’s game appears set for a long awaited return this year.

Trials for the Mid Canterbury United women’s squad will be held at Ashburton’s Argyle Park on Monday, with coaching staff aiming for about 20-25 players for next week’s session.

Entry into Sunday’s women’s league remained the plan for club insiders, following headaches last year where the ability to field a full squad took a hit with Covid.

The club had previously competed in the division two grade of the Sunday league.

Tireless player/coach Darren Cavill will helm training sessions during the week, however he was looking for one of the senior players to step up on match day.

Cavill said it would be great to see the return of the girls to the pitch this season, as he believed there was potential for a step up.

“I think this season if we get the girls that were going to play last year, I think the quality will be good enough where they can enter division one,” he said.

However he encouraged fresh faces to come down for Monday’s trials where there was scope in players with limited or no experience to be thrust into the mix.

“As long as they’re co-ordinated enough to kick a ball really.

“I’m always open to the girls training even if they don’t intend to play.

“There’s a real difference of abilities in the women’s game in Mid Canterbury, so we encourage anyone who wants to get involved to come down and train at least.

“The more numbers the better.”

Previous squads centered around a handful of leaders and talented younger players within the group, Cavill said.

“Those leaders in the group are really key in terms of getting results. They’re really good, those girls, I don’t have to organise anything for them, they just do it themselves.”

From blending bulk fertiliser and operating heavy machinery to processing computerised orders - your mix of practical skills, personality, and professionalism means that nothing will be a problem.

About the role These are full-time roles and would suit someone who has experience in a warehouse/bulk fertiliser store environment with computer-based stock management and ordering system. This could mean that one moment you’ll be helping a customer with their order; the next driving the loader to meet a despatch deadline.

There are seasonal demands which require flexibility in the hours you will be required to work, including Saturday mornings during the peak periods. About you Your previous experience in a customer-focussed role along with general store/yard work will make you the ideal candidate. Karen’s final whistle

One of the country’s most esteemed hockey umpires has called time on her career.

Karen Bennett has decided to hang up her whistle, after eight years and 59 matches as an international match official.

The former Mid Cantabrian woman, who is now based in Banks Peninsula, is wanting to focus on her family after she had her first child last year.

Hockey New Zealand (HNZ) confirmed her retirement in a statement earlier this week.

Bennett’s first entry into umpiring was when she volunteered for her sister’s Mid Canterbury under-15 side in Ashburton.

The governing body paid tribute to Bennett’s career this week which included a pinnacle feat of being appointed to officiate at the 2014 World Cup tournament in the Netherlands.

“Karen is without doubt one of the most respected and cherished umpires in our hockey family,” HNZ technical manager Colin French said.

“I have always admired her energy and professionalism.

“She is a true team player, who is always willing to help both her peers and the wider umpiring community.”

French added that Bennett was a high achiever who never sought the limelight, always ensuring continuous learning and enjoyment were key pillars to her umpiring craft.

Mid Canterbury Hockey also acknowledged Bennett’s tenure on its Facebook page this week.

“Mid Canterbury Hockey would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Karen on an outstanding international career, and thank you for all the help and support you have given your ‘home’ team over the years.

“We wish you all the best for your future – without a whistle!”
