Emergency call-outs

Ward 1 back on ground floor Staff on Ashburton Hospital’s ward 1 made the move to their new-look rooms on the ground floor, yesterday. The 21-bed ward was relocated upstairs to the former Ward 3 in July, last year, so the rooms could be refurbished as part of the $8.7 million Ashburton Hospital upgrade. The new ward received cosmetic repairs that included painting, new floor coverings and a new nurse call system. Ashburton Health Services manager Bernice Marra, said information about

A woman in her 50s was treated by St John at the scene of a car versus truck crash yesterday. St John and the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to the crash about 1.44pm at the corner of Boundary and Grahams roads. Shortly after, the brigade was called to back-up the Hinds Rural Fire Unit, which had been called to a car fire. Hinds firefighters reported the car had been idling in the garage of a Hinds home, when it burst into flames. The motor of the car had been destroyed. Ashburton firefighters responded to smoke from a garage earlier in the day, about 11.30am at Netherby, however it turned out to be a false alarm. It was the second false alarm call-out of the day, after they responded to an alarm activation at Anzco Meats in the early hours of the morning.

the move was provided to inpatients and families in the days leading up to the move. “Planning was very particular to ensure patient safety during the moves,” she said. “While everyone was very excited to see what the rooms look like, our priority was to reduce the impact on patients and staff as much as possible.” She said in keeping with the new Acute Assessment Unit and Day Procedure Theatre, Ward 1 would be modern and fit for purpose.

“Friendly Professional Care for the Older Person”

Dump hours to be increased By Sue Newman

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Queues at the gate waiting for the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park to open on Sunday afternoon will soon be a thing of the past. Fed up with fielding user complaints about limited hours on a Sunday, the Ashburton District Council is opting to open the park at 9am on Sunday and push closing out to 6pm. Waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin said that most Sundays there were people waiting at the gate for the park to open and that meant congestion around the tip face and green waste area as dumpers vied for space to unload. The earlier opening and later closing will smooth out the demand peaks and make the offloading process much better for all users, Goodwin said. Monday to Saturday hours will also be extended, from 8am-6pm during daylight saving, reverting to the current hours in the winter. “The rationale around the extra

hours during the week is improving access to the park for businesses. And longer hours also tie in with our drive to get more material into the park. Access will help with this issue.” The extra hours come with a $33,000 cost to pay extra wages needed to keep the park open, but the extra opening hours are unlikely to increase revenue. The new hours come into effect on July 1. While the council has solved its park access problems, it is still looking for a permanent fix for wind issues that see the park closed two or three times each year. A covered tip face is the ultimate solution but that is expensive, Goodwin said and instead he is working on an alert system that will ensure users have advance warning of any closure. A weather station is being installed on an elevated site in the adjoining dog park and this will provide data users can access, he said.

Drive with care and stay safe

Our new New Zealanders after the citizenship ceremony.

Welcome to our new New Zealand citizens BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Fifty-three new citizens were welcomed yesterday in a ceremony at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel welcomed people from as close as Australia and the Pacific Islands, to Canada and the United Kingdom. The ceremony began with a

performance from the Netherby School Puawaitanga performance group. Principal Phil Wheeler said it was quite special as a current and a former teacher were sworn in as citizens, as well as three families from the school. Following the performance, Favel shared a few words, before through either oath or affirmation, 53 new citizens were wel-

comed to New Zealand. A short film from the Department of Internal Affairs followed, which included messages from Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy and Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne. One of the 53 new citizens is American Earl Romero Jr. “I first came to New Zealand in 1999 with a friend from Timaru for a snowboarding holiday,” he

said. After enjoying his time in New Zealand, Romero Jr got a work visa and travelled to Auckland to work. “I fell in love, mainly with the nature and the natural beauty here,” he said. “Coming from California, coming here is almost like going back in time, everything is a bit more relaxed.” More photos p7

If you’re stopped by 9olice on the road this weekend, don’t panic, you may not be doing anything wrong. As part of Operation Drive Safe, police around Canterbury will be stopping cars over Queen’s Birthday weekend, talking to drivers and reinforcing their safe driving message. “ We want to remind all drivers planning to get away for the weekend to share the driving, take regular breaks and drive alert,” said Senior Constable Brent Cosgrove. The NZ Transport Agency is also hammering home the safe driving message, reminding people to check road conditions before they head away to holiday hot spots. Hotpots maps collate information from previous Queen’s Birthday Weekend journeys on the times where traffic is heaviest. “We want to remind all drivers planning to get away for the weekend to share the driving, take regular breaks and drive alert,” Cosgrove said. “When traffic is heavy and driving conditions are less than ideal, a safe speed might be lower than the posted limit. We’re urging everyone to be patient, relax, and enjoy the journey.”

Candidates disappointed by US decision BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Politicians campaigning for votes are often at loggerheads, but in the Ashburton area yesterday they were all disappointed about Donald Trump’s Paris Climate Accord withdrawal. Rangitata National candidate Andrew Falloon said climate change was a global issue which required a global solution. “So it’s hugely disappointing but not surprising that the Unit-

ed States has pulled out,” Falloon said. Along with the European Union, Australia, China, Canada, and around 110 other countries, New Zealand remained committed to the Paris agreement. The National Government had set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions and was investing in a range of programmes. There was more to do, but impacts of any remedial actions also had to be considered.

RULES FOR REPLACING YOUR WOODBURNER In the Ashburton Clean Air Zone, all older style wood burners* that are 15 years or older, can be replaced with a low emission wood burner, provided that a building consent is issued by District Council

BEFORE 31st OCTOBER 2017. For more information, see in-store or contact Environment Canterbury Phone 0800 329 276 or email ecinfo@ecan.govt.nz. *That do not meet a 1 gram emission standard and are not on the authorised wood burner list.

“The last thing New Zealand needs, and particularly for an area like Mid Canterbury, is to put massive new costs on the agricultural sector if competitors in international markets don’t sign up to similar obligations,” Falloon said. Labour Party candidate for Rangitata Jo Luxton said Trump’s decision was a “huge setback”, “completely irresponsible”, and it showed how insular he was. “He can’t stick his head in the

sand and say that climate change and global warming doesn’t exist, not when we are seeing more and more extreme weather events and rising sea levels,” Luxton said. She also backed her party’s leader Andrew Little in calling for the government to voice New Zealand’s concerns to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when he visited Wellington next week, and for National not to go soft on its own commitments in the

wake of the Trump decision. Green Party candidate for Rangitata Mojo Mathers said Trump had abdicated moral leadership on climate change, and it was now up to New Zealand and the rest of the world to stand firm and increase efforts. “National must not use the US decision to justify their plans to open new coal mines and expand risky oil and gas exploration in New Zealand waters,” Mathers said.

WARM UP YOUR HOME GETTING ADVICE FOR YOUR WOOD FIRE PROJECT Your Mitre 10 team member will start with asking about your home’s heating requirements; is this a large home newly built with insulation and double glazing, or a small draughty villa undergoing renovation? Once we’ve found your wood fire, we’ll discuss the components needed to install and ventilate your wood fire when it’s in action. Building consent is required to start the installation. We can send you in the right direction. Talk to us about site delivery too. To make sure you are ready to go, let’s talk about heat transfer systems, hearths and equip you with all the tools and fuels to light your fire. Keep your wood fire burning bright with regular maintenance checks. Mitre 10 has all the parts to help you year after year.

Lot 9 consents could stay

Three new stop signs for district roads

By Sue Newman

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Last year there was an overwhelming call for the Ashburton District Council to cancel two resource consents that were part of Lot 9 in its north-east business estate. The consents to extract and discharge water were key in what became a failed deal to sell the site to a waterbottling company. When the deal fell over, the council came under pressure to cancel the consents. With an election looming councillors decided to leave a decision on the consents’ future to the new team of councillors. The consents expire on September 30, 2019 and the council can choose to let these lapse or seek an extension of the lapsing date On Thursday those councillors had an opportunity to take public feeling on board and cancel the consents. They failed to do so. At the service delivery meeting councillors were given three choices – take no action, seek a variation to give effect to the consents, or surrender the consents immediately. Council staff recommended that councillors took no action on the consents. They agreed with the recommendation moved by Neil Brown and seconded by Diane Rawlinson and the decision will go to the June 29 council meeting for sign off.

Thousands of daffodils has identified the open speed area as having safety issues. Council roading manager Brian Fauth said the council had a strong focus on ensuring all intersections in the district had the appropriate controls to ensure maximum driver safety. “Council regularly reviews its roading network for safety and

it can be difficult for drivers to see oncoming vehicles at these intersections. “The introduction of stop signs is intended to instruct drivers to stop at the appropriate location so that they have enough time and are in the right position to adequately see oncoming traffic,” he said.

GP call-line runs 24/7 By Sue Newman

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

General practitioners now provide 24/7 frontline help for their patients and this highlights the importance of people ensuring they were enrolled with a general practice team, says Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Alister Humphrey. A scheme that encourages patients to contact their medical centre 24/7 if they need a doctor is well tested across Canterbury. It’s a simple system that sees after hours calls to a GP put through to a triage system where

a course of action for immediate care is determined. The system is well used in Ashburton where there is no accident and emergency department at Ashburton Hospital, but it relies on people ensuring they are enrolled with a medical centre, Humphrey said. While the system had been in place for some time, awareness needed to be raised of its importance as a first port of call for health advice, he said. “Even after-hours you can call your usual general practice number and when they’re closed, a

Motorists beware – three new stop signs are about to appear at intersections around the Ashburton District. Poor visibility, either from vegetation or road angles at the intersections, has prompted the Ashburton District Council to switch controls from give way to stop signs. The two intersections on Oak Grove and Elizabeth Street have been the scene of 19 recorded motor vehicle crashes since 2007, the highest number of any intersection in Ashburton. Failure to give way was given as the reason for every crash. Looking south-west from the central island vision is poor because of large oak trees. A stop sign will be placed at the end of Company Road where it enters Seafield Road. Seven crashes have occurred here over the past 10 years. This intersection involves an acute angle of road, a hedge and a power pole blocking vision to the east. The third intersection up for change is the Winchmore Dromore Road with Mitcham Road. While this intersection has a zero crash record, the council

team of nurses is available to answer your call. The nurses provide free health advice and, if you need to be seen urgently by a doctor, they can tell you what to do and where to go,” he said. Humphrey is advising people to save their GP’s phone number into their mobile phone to ensure they can access prompt health advice 24/7. With increased rates of illness and greater demand on hospital services during winter, people should seek help earlier rather than later, Humphrey said. “It’s always important peo-

ple access the most appropriate health care, and in most cases this is your general practice team, even after hours – phone your GP team before things get worse.” If urgent medical attention was needed, the triage team would advise the most appropriate place to go to receive the care needed, he said. If lifesaving emergency medical attention was needed, people should continue to call 111 for an ambulance. “If you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency phone your GP team any time of the day or night,” Humphrey said.

■■MYRTLE RUST

Myrtle rust unlikely here By Michelle Nelson

Michelle.n@theguardian.co.nz

A rare stand of protected kanuka forest in Mid Canterbury is unlikely to fall prey to the myrtle rust fungi which poses a threat to a number of the country’s iconic native plant species. Spores from the windborne disease were first discovered in Kerikeri early last month and has since been discovered in Taranaki. Myrtle rust is a significant disease of plant species from the myrtle (Myrtaceae) and has been spreading rapidly around the world in recent years. Plants in this family include pohutukawa, manuka and kanuka. Other at-risk species include feijoa, gum and bottlebrush. Severe infections can kill plants. The Harris Reserve, a small block of land in the Maronan area, is a tiny remnant of virgin kanuka and is representative of the vast tracts of kanuka which once covered the Canterbury Plains.

The disease myrtle rust has been spreading rapidly around the world in recent years. The 10.5 hectare reserve, once owned by the Harris family, is protected by a QII Trust covenant. It was gazetted in 2009 and officially opened the following year. Since then thousands of kanuka seedlings, propagated from seeds collected from the original plants, have been planted by Forest and Bird members, assisted

by other community groups. The myrtle rust incursion is being managed by the Ministry of Primary Industries, assisted by Department of Conservation (DOC) staff. DOC senior communications advisor Herb Christopher said the current myrtle rust incursion surveillance programme was not

being extended south of Marlborough. However, the fungus was unlikely to survive the hard frosts which characterise Mid Canterbury’s winters. “Myrtle rust thrives within a temperature range of 15 to 25 degrees, anything below that on a regular basis – like cold, frosty nights – would probably exclude it surviving anywhere as far south as Ashburton,” Christopher said. DOC has been involved in seed collection for a number of years in anticipation of the arrival of the myrtle rust fungus, he said. The MPI website contains advice for community groups undertaking planting and maintenance programmes of plant species which could be affected by myrtle rust. Plants that are also important to our honey industry, such as manuka and kanuka, could also be affected, which could severely impact on New Zealand’s annual $300 million of honey exports. Work on the Harris Reserve is administered by the Ashburton Community Conservation Trust.

■■HEARTLAND BANK

Work to begin on Heartland upgrade Work will begin this month on the upgrade and refurbishment of Ashburton’s Heartland Bank’s East Street building. Staff relocated to a temporary home on Tancred Street in February ahead of the building’s upgrade to the required seismic

strength rating. The refurbishment is likely to see new bank functions operating out of the Ashburton site and when the new bank opens its doors it is likely to do so with fewer opportunities for face-to-face teller services. The project is an important

one for the bank, chief executive Jeff Greenslade said, and it cements the bank’s long history in Ashburton. “Heartlands roots stretch back to 1875 with the inception of Ashburton Permanent Building and Investment Society and this

■■MT HUTT

Clean-up operation unearths missing treasures Ski gloves, beanies, an extractor vent and a trailer – these are just some of the items retrieved from below Mt Hutt each year. The ski area recently undertook a helicopter clean-up operation in and around the Pudding Hill valley, with staff gathering items and airlifting them out for disposal. Manager James McKenzie said the mountain’s nor’west winds collected many an item each winter, and corrugated iron, flashings, barrier mattresses and even an extractor vent and a trailer had been retrieved in the past. However, he believed many comments on the skifield’s Facebook page from people asking if staff had found their personal possessions were obviously just tongue in cheek, with questions about items such as iPhones, keys and ski bases. Nevertheless, items such as smart phones and go pros were sometimes recovered under the lift lines after the snow melt each summer. They went into the skifield’s lost property collection and efforts made to return them.

Organisers are hoping that a wellattended workshop on Thursday will be the stepping stone to establishing Mid Canterbury’s veryown TimeBank. About 60 people from around the Mid Canterbury district stopped by the Ashburton Trust Event Centre to learn more about the concept. “TimeBanking is where the community can exchange services for time credits, rather than using money,” said organiser Kate White. Speaking at the workshop was Lyttleton TimeBank facilitator Anneleise Hall, who described the concept as a way to “re-ignite human decency”. “If we could do all these little things it would grow and grow and grow,” she said. Attendees were involved with tasks throughout the workshop, being asked to write two things down they could do to help someone, and two things they might like help with. This was used to show just how many options are available with their skill sets. “It is about being creative, in-

Pair not ready to h For Keith and Bevan Grice, the love of farming and breeding good horses runs deep in their veins. They talk to reporter Sue Newman about the joy of spending their lives as brothers and friends, doing what they love best.

here’s 2000 acres of land along the Mid Canterbury coast that’s Grice land. It’s been that way for more than a century and its current custodians Keith and Bevan can’t see any reason why things won’t stay that way for another 100 or so years. Their grandfather settled in the Seafield area, their father farmed that land and, God willing, the boys hope some of their own children and grandchildren will do the same. But right now, at 91 and 86, they’re not ready to hand over the reins. Farming’s in their blood, it gives them a reason to get up in the morning and after more than 70 years working the land it still puts a fire in their bellies. People retire and they die, Bevan says, adding he’s got no intention of dying any time soon. When Robert and Ben Grice bought the 1000-acre Seafield block in 1906 it was dryland, growing as much gorse as it did grass and sheep that were fence free to wander at will. World War One came along, Ben headed overseas and Robert kept things ticking over on the farm. ried the girl from down the road, Emily Beattie, and as well as raising sheep, raised a family. There was never any question that Keith and Bevan would become farmers. They started out in partnership on the home farm but over the years they’ve amalgamated smaller farms into their holdings and today by splitting those farms, the brothers farm 1000 acres each. “It’s what we always wanted, 1000 acres of our own,” Bevan said. He runs 40 beef shorthorn cows and 2200 texel-romney sheep on his block. His sonin-law Paul Hefford is his right-hand man and takes care of a herd of 150 deer that Bevan says are more his daughter Mary and Paul’s thing than his. Sticking with farming is something Bevan says he’s never regretted. “I love being my own boss, doing the things you want to do and working with animals,” he said. The boys are similar style farmers, similar in outlook. They both love sheep, cattle and horses and they both love a laugh and a good yarn. “And we’ve never had an argument.” That’s not to say things have always been easy – far from it. Bevan recalls shearing 2100 sheep and baling the wool on his own one year to save money, times when the two brothers shared

one car between two families and times when no-one went to town for weeks. “I’ve lost count of the number of droughts. You stick to your guns, but you don’t win every time in farming,” he said. For him there have been personal losses too. His wife Deirdre died many years ago and he says he still misses her every day. Several years ago his son John died too. Bevan might be a traditionalist in many ways, but he’s irrigated over 400 acres of the farm and this year’s he’s dabbled in growing a ‘modern’ feed crop, fodderbeet. You can’t stop learning, he says. “I put irrigation in because I used to send stock away to graze, now I can keep the stock at home.” At 86 he still does a solid day’s work on the farm, feeding out stock most days, but admits he leaves some of the heavier tractor work to Paul. He’s out of bed at 6.45am most days and has the same breakfast every day – porridge, two tablespoons of apple, four tablespoons of yoghurt washed down with banana milk. Brother Keith has knocked off his 91st birthday. He’s the same age as Queen Elizabeth and says she still does a solid day’s work and he can’t see any reason why he shouldn’t too. Like his younger brother, Keith is a man of the land, heart and soul. “My mother wanted me to be a school teacher. I didn’t. I left school to work on the farm and I’ve never regretted that,” he said. Keith still farms pretty much the way he has done for years. He decided to put irrigation in but has never used it. He only did it to provide water for the house. For him the rules for a good farmer and a happy life are simple – “A good wife, a good dog, a good man helping you out and a good wrist watch. I worked by time all the time and always came in for dinner at 12 o’clock. I made a point of that,” he said. Keith is a stock man and says he enjoys nothing better than working with his sheep. When he looks back at his decades as a farmer, Keith reckons things have become a lot more complicated today. Too much paperwork takes a man away from the real business of farming. The machinery, of course, has changed. His 23-horsepower tractor and three-furrow plough have been replaced by a 140-horsepower model. Now, he admits, he’s quite happy working from the cab of the quieter modern-day tractor. He’s currently taking it easy. A knee replacement has seen to that. “The pain’s been hell but I’ve got clearance to work the tractor again and I’ll be able to walk up the steps into the grandstand at the races,” he said. Wife Betty is keeping an eye out to make sure he’s not doing too much, but Keith’s not too keen on sitting still. Like his brother, he likes his sheep dogs. Bud’s his current companion, but he’s planning for the future, planning to add a new dog to take the workload of the ageing Bud’s legs. He’s disappointed at the demise of the sheep dog, saying motorbikes just aren’t the same.

Keith’s enjoyed the cut and thrust of buying up neighbouring land then carving it up. Over the years he’s been a regular buyer, but never a seller of land. Some of his farming practices have changed. Like Bevan he’s now a texelromney man and he buys in weaned bobby calves and steers to fatten. There’s nothing he’d change in life – except his tractor, Keith said. But there are plenty of things that have changed around him, particularly farm ownership. He admits he hardly knows a neighbour today. “And technology’s changed everything; farming’s got so big. It’s no longer a way of life, it’s a business,” he said. He’s happy son Robert has come home to farm. He’s interested in organics and while Keith might be curious about what’s going on, on his son’s farm, he says he’s definitely not interfering. Some things haven’t changed for the Grice boys, however. There’s usually an early morning phone call to talk about the work for the day – even though they run separate farms, and there’s usually a cup of coffee at Keith’s place between 8am and 9am. They’ve battled drought, tough financial times, too much rain and footrot, but farming’s a life they’d choose over and over again. The Grice boys might be well-established farmers, but they’re also well-established breeders of high performing racehorses. Farming’s their business; horse breeding their hobby. And having a hobby is what keeps a man sane, Bevan says. “It doesn’t matter what you do, if you don’t have a hobby, you won’t last.” The boys are keen on lasting. The pair got into breeding horses in 1945 but they reckon it’s something they were bred to do. “Our grandfather won the first race in

Ashburton for a wager. It was from the Tinwald railway station to Winslow railway station and he won,” Bevan said. They started out with one brood mare. Their first few ventures into breeding weren’t promising – dead foals and a few dead mares. But they persevered. Eventually success came. They continued breeding, opting to lease their young stock rather than selling them outright or racing them themselves. If there’s a foal that’s showing promise, they’ve never been tempted to keep it and race it themselves. “It’s not fair to keep the pick and race it yourself and leave the second-rate ones; you’re not being honest if you do that and honesty is everything. If you’re not going to be honest you won’t last – and we’ve lasted,” Bevan said. “We’ll lease to anyone – if they’ve got the money, we’ve got the time. With the leased horses, I like the people who have them to get all the enjoyment out of them; they’re doing the paying. You meet so many people through horses.” And leasing provides opportunities for people to become involved in racing through syndicates without spending a fortune, Keith says. “And some of those syndicates are so big now they fill the birdcage, but it’s giving people an interest and it’s keeping racing alive.” Over the years they’ve bred 191 winners and their horses have won 718 races. Not bad for a hobby. Currently they’ve got 10 foals in the paddock and Bevan estimates there are about 15 mares out there too. “We treat the horses like family even if we don’t remember all their names,” Keith said. Their friendship extends to horse breeding too. If they don’t agree on a stallion or a course of action with a horse, then they don’t proceed. While Betty keeps Keith in line, Bevan

does for himself, keeping well fed and the house in top order. He’s too busy to get lonely and if there’s a quiet moment, his two sheep dogs Jed and Girl are pretty good company. He looks back over decades of farming and says there’s nothing he’d change. “I’d still have just what I’ve got. I’ve achieved what I set out to get when I was 14. I still enjoy every day; I’d love to live forever. You see a lot of people who retire and give up and deteriorate; we have a purpose.” Today is a big day for the Grice boys. It’s Harness Jewels day when the country’s best young standardbreds vie for titles over a mile. Horses they’ve bred have been there before and this year they’re hopeful they might finally win a title. “This might be our year, but it doesn’t bother us if we don’t win,” Keith said.

PHOTO RACE IMAGES

Chasing a sparkling emerald BY MATT MARKHAM

MATT.M@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Just the chance to be a part of one of the biggest days on the harness racing calendar is enough for Murray and Vivia Gaylor. Anything else will be a bonus. The Ashburton breeders will today line up to get in the gates at the Ashburton Raceway alongside many other racing enthusiasts for the annual Harness Jewels meeting, but will do so as the owners and breeders of a runner in one of the nine group one races. Their horse, Sparkling Delight, who is one of just two Ashburtontrained horses competing on the

$1.2 million race day, might not be one of the fancied runners to take out his race – the Four-YearOld Emerald worth $150,000 – but the effort to be there competing against some of the best in the business is an achievement in itself. “He’s just such a lovely horse,” Murray said on Thursday night. “We love him to bits and he’s that little bit more special because we bred him as well.” The Gaylors have enjoyed three wins and eight placings from Sparkling Delight this season and of late he has been in the form of his life. The pair put a lot of that

down to the skill and patience of their trainer, Gerard O’Reilly. “We are very lucky to have a guy like Gerard training our horse, he is an outstanding horseman,” Murray said. “He’s done an excellent job with Sparkling Delight.” A long priced chance this afternoon, Sparkling Delight will be one for the big dividend chasers from his draw of one on the second line where he will require a lot of luck. With no pressure on to perform, the Gaylors will head along and simply enjoy the occasion. “It’s a case of what will be, will

be,” Vivia said. “It’s going to be very exciting to have a horse racing on such a big day at our home track.” Like his owners, O’Reilly too was philosophical about his chances. “We are going to need a lot of luck,” he said. “He’s all of a sudden stepped up in his work recently, I am really happy with him, we just have to hope that we don’t end up too far back on the markers.” Potentially O’Reilly could get his wish if the race runs to plan. Australian visitor, Mr Mojito and his driver Kerryn Manning, who won the New Zealand Trot-

ting Cup two years ago with Arden Rooney, may look to hold the lead at all costs from their good barrier draw which could see Sparkling Delight sitting three back from the fence. “If that happens and they run along a bit he will run on stronger than most I would like to think,” O’Reilly said. “He just keeps going.” O’Reilly has gone close to Jewels success in the past with Tiger Tara, but a win or even a placing in his home region with a horse he trains would be a real personal achievement for the Rakaia horseman.

Jewels Day top tips It’s the biggest day of harness racing in New Zealand alongside New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington and today the Harness Jewels hit Ashburton. To help you hopefully head home with a profit MATT MARKHAM has run the rule over the nine races and found a little bit of value for those who don’t like the short-priced favourites. Race One – 2YO Diamond

Glenferrie Classic for second and third.

Let’s start the day by being a little brave and leaving things to chance with #10 Dizzy Miss Lizzy. A stunning winner last time, she might be still a little under-valued even based on that most recent performance. Needs luck from the inside of the second row, but will be running on stronger than most at the business end of proceedings. #2 Elle Mac needs to be included alongside her, with a good draw and the might of the Mark Purdon & Natalie Rasmussen stable behind her she’s the one they all have to beat, but maybe the invincibility cloak somewhat faded with her last start defeat. Suggested Bet: Dizzy Miss Lizzy – each way.

Race Four: 3YO Diamond

Race Two – 2YO Ruby

If the well-behaved version of #7 Enghien rocks up today, then it is a case of race over. He’s shown this season he’s head and shoulders above the rest and it’s hard to see that changing if he brings his A game. So it’s a case of finding what to back for a place. #2 President Roydon is the logical, but $5 on him to run a drum won’t even buy you a jug after the last race. #12 Needle will though, and with a good run through the Colin DeFilippi-driven trotter could be your multi-booster. Suggested Bet: Needle to place.

There’s an unspoken law in Mid Canterbury when it comes to harness racing and it is that if you are in doubt, just back Ricky May. The masterful horseman and his drive here, #4 Aoraki is very appealing at around the $10 quote. Despite a win and a second from his two starts, he’s slipping under the radar ever so slightly and with any luck he’ll be right there when the things get serious. The other option is the enigmatic #3 Sundees Son who has the huge motor, but not the ringcraft. If he trots, look out, he’ll probably win. But if he doesn’t its game over. Suggested Bet: Aoraki – each way

Race Three: 4YO Diamond Hard to tip anything to beat the #1 Piccadilly Princess, she is the class act of this field, but she’s not going to pay anything that is anywhere near appealing to those who like the value. So stick her on top of a quinella or trifecta and take a few around her. #5 Arden’s Choice is the logical, she placed in an Auckland Cup but for value you might want #8 Ultimate Desire, the local #7 Queen Bee Bardon and off the back row #10 RR Sand Dollar and #11 Glenferrie Classic. Suggested Bet: Trifecta: Piccadilly Princess to win – with Arden’s Choice, Queen Bee Bardon, Ultimate Desire, RR Sand Dollar &

M8

There’s been plenty of talk about what might happen in this one with the hot fave, #7 Spanish Armada likely to be parked by the #1 Delightful Memphis. That could make things interesting and potentially set the race up for one who likes to swoop. Based on the fact she’s going to be the one they all have to run past, Delightful Memphis might be the horse to back on an each-way basis. Or maybe to box in a quinella with Spanish Armada and also #12 Partyon. Suggested Bet: Delightful Memphis each way.

Race Five: 3YO Ruby

Race Six: 2YO Emerald Another short priced favourite expected to dominate here with #2 Spankem drawn to lead and dominate. But where do we find the value? There will be plenty of appealing place prices on offer for a large number of well-credentialed horses here, but it’s a case of finding the right one. From left field perhaps, #5 Star Commander might be the horse. He’s got any amount of talent but is still the raw product. He’s going to pay better than $5 for the place and will give you a great run for your investment. Suggested Bet: Star Commander to place

the four top favourites. It is hard to see the winner coming from outside of their stable, but at less than $2, #14Heaven Rocks is no value considering some of his wayward tendencies. Waikiki Beach on the other hand is a little more appealing considering he has a front line draw and the gate speed to lead and make the race his own. That’s good enough for us. All on #6 please. Suggested Bet: Waikiki Beach to win

Race Eight – 4YO Ruby If you had offered a well-schooled punter more than $3 for Marcoola to win the 4YO Ruby four months ago they would have laughed and invested almost everything they had on the outstanding trotter. But an injury and poor first-up run have seen him drift to what would have been mouthwatering odds. They are very juicy odds for a horse who has pushed Monbet and you would think even a slightly down on form Marcoola should still be able to win this. Suggested Bet: Marcoola to win

Race Nine – 3YO Emerald Let’s get this out of the way first, #2 Ultimate Machete and #5 More The Better are the two horses who will likely bash this one out. Classy three-year-olds with good words coming from their trainers this week, perhaps you don’t have to look any further. Hard to see that if one doesn’t win, that the other won’t fill the void. It’s the quinella of the day in many people’s eyes and if you haven’t had a collect all day then back both of these horses to win and you should at least get to enjoy the thrill of a winner. Suggested Bet: Ultimate Machete & More The Better to win.

MATT MARKHAM SELECTS Race 1: Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Elle Mac, Bettor Joy, Lady Chatto Race 2: Sundee’s Son, Aoraki, Majestic Man, Sprinbank Lachie Race 3: Piccadilly Princess, Ultimate Desire, Arden’s Choice, RR Sand Dollar Race 4: Spanish Armada, Delightful Memphis, Partyon, Bonnie Joan Race 5: Enghien, President Roydon, CK Spur, Needle Race 6: Spankem, Bright Diamond, The Devil’s Own, Star Commander Race 7: Heaven Rocks, Waikiki Beach, My Mojito, Cash N Flow Race 8: Marcoola, Dark Horse, Temporale, Wilma’s Mate Race 9: More The Better, Ultimate Machete, The Fixer, Let It Ride Best Bet: Piccadilly Princess (Race 3) Eachway: Dizzy Miss Lizzy (Race 1) Longshot: Star Commander (Race 6)

Race Seven: 4YO Emerald Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen are expected to dominate here with three of

Don’t write off bonny Queen Bee By Matt Markham

Matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

So much about horse racing can be left to chance, but Ben Waldron’s approach to today’s Harness Jewels may very well be about taking control of his own destiny. Waldron, who trains on the outskirts of Ashburton, will line up his bonny mare, Queen Bee Bardon, in the Four-Year-Old Diamond worth $150,000 and while the entire field looks set to bow to the superiority of hot-favourite Piccadilly Princess, Waldron isn’t about to walk up and offer a congratulatory handshake to her connections just yet. He knows full well how racing can be a fickle beast at times, so there’s no lie down and concede defeat attitude from his camp. “Obviously, she (Piccadilly Princess) is going to be very hard to beat,” Waldron said. “But if you don’t go into race at least hoping you can win it, then you might as well not be there. “I’ve got a horse who is a very good one in my opinion, but she’s going to need that little ounce of luck to give her the best possible chance of winning.” Drawn in the middle of the front line from behind the mobile, Queen Bee Bardon is stuck in no-man’s land early. She possesses very good gate speed but seems to produce her best efforts when coming from off the pace, so Waldron has found himself in a bit of a pickle for the last week about what tactics they should approach. Ultimately he will leave the decision-making to his driver, Craig Thornley, but his leaning is towards going forward from out of the gate. “It’s a tricky one, because we know how she races best, but if we go back it could be disastrous so we are almost better off not

leaving it to chance and trying to give ourselves the best possible chance by going forward early. “If we can get to outside the leader easier enough and then find cover behind the right horse

it will be great, but being trapped wide going into that first bend could make things tricky.” On her work and demeanour this week, Waldron can’t fault his mare heading into the big assign-

ment. “She looks fantastic and really strong. “We didn’t start her last weekend at the workouts because she had been a little off, but everything seems to be back in order

now and she’s ready to rock and roll.” A $39 chance with TAB Bookmakers, Queen Bee Bardon is offering good value on the place market at $5.80.

Fearless Jones

Hoping for a chance

Mark Jones is taking his “be scared of no-one” approach from the boxing ring to the race track. And when the former World Driving Champion and unbeaten boxer says his instructions to Blair Orange with Delightful Memphis will be to hold the lead at all costs, Jones means business. Spanish Armada, the favourite for the Three-Year-Old Diamond today, has been the thorn in Delightful Memphis’ side for her entire career and on nine occasions has finished second to the wonderful filly - with the result going the other way only once. “I think everybody knows Spanish Armada is the better filly but we have the draw to park her and that is our best chance of winning,” Jones said. While she has been a major competitor in the three-year-old fillies ranks, Delightful Memphis has also shown her versatility this season by racing up in the open grade races,

starting off handicaps and winning. Sure, it’s not the best method for a three-year-old filly, but it’s helped to make her more hardened than most of her rivals this weekend and that might just be the difference heading into what is sure to be an electric one mile event. After missing the NZ Oaks due to a slight illness, the work of the daughter of Bettor’s Delight has been exceptional this week and is allowing Jones to speak with some confidence. “I couldn’t be happier with my filly. She has had a long season and the only time she has really felt 100 per cent on top of her game was in Auckland before Christmas and I honestly think she is back to that now. “Her recent work has been super and the fact she missed the Oaks last start because she was a bit crook probably helped her.” An $8 chance for Diamond glory, Delightful Memphis holds the mantle of being one of very few pacers on Saturday who could spoil the All Stars party.

Matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

There’s a glaringly obvious omission on the Greg and Nina Hope list of achievements. The Woodend Beach couple have had their hands on almost every major trotting race in New Zealand, and in a very short space of time, but a 3YO Ruby has so far evaded them. Monbet went close when he finished second to Sunny Ruby two years ago, but other than that it’s been a case of no dice. As funny as it sounds, considering the might of Monbet, the Hope team might have their best possible chance this year in Enghien (pictured), who is set to start one of the shortest priced favourites of the day. Despite a wide draw and a less than convincing last performance, he’s still one of the leading favourites in multi betting for the day and Greg Hope wasn’t at all concerned about the issues last time out either.

“He’s always got a wee issue with the bends, but he generally powers through them,” Hope said. That means local lad Ricky May will again have to earn his driving fee, but a wide barrier draw may help proceedings. Not being down near the inside means May will be able to allow Enghien to balance before letting him slide and it’s hard

to imagine anyone other than President Roydon denying him the front if he comes knocking. And there is the added carrot on Saturday too. A win, another at group one, might just be enough for Enghien to lay a serious claim to the title of Trotter of the Year in a season where there has been no direct standout performer.

Durant dazzles Kevin Durant drove through the lane untouched for dazzling dunks time and again, finishing with 38 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in his first NBA Finals for Golden State and leading the Warriors past LeBron James and the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers, 113-91 in game 1. Stephen Curry scored 28 points with six three-pointers and 10 assists as this sureto-be thrilling trilogy began at last, a longexpected, spectacular grand finale envisioned ever since that July day Durant left Oklahoma City to join the loaded Warriors. James had 28 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists a day after dealing with bigotry far away from basketball. Someone painted a racial slur – the N-word – on the gate of his Los Angeles home, leaving James to address racism rather than his seventh straight finals appearance. James said he would do his best to be ready for the series opener when his mind was elsewhere, concerned for his wife and children back in Ohio.

Durant punished Cleveland for leaving him free, taking the ball to the hoop for emphatic dunks as a man on a mission to deliver exactly what he came for: a championship. He had six slams in the first half alone for the Warriors, who at 13-0 are already the first team to go this far in a postseason unblemished. “I think the start of the game, we were a little too anxious and we missed some layups, we gave up some open shots,” Durant said. “I think we just locked in from the second quarter on.” Kyrie Irving, who hit the deciding threepointer with Curry’s hand in his face last June as Cleveland rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to win the city’s first major team title in 52 years, scored 24 points on 10of-22 shooting. Kevin Love grabbed 21 rebounds and scored 15 points, while Tristan Thompson was held scoreless and to four boards. Game 2 in the series is Monday back at Oracle Arena with its deafening sell-out crowd. – AP

Rakaia keen to get back on track for semis By Matt Markham

Matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

After disappearing into their shell last week, Rakaia will be keen to get back to what they know best in semi-final rugby action this afternoon. After producing flamboyant rugby for most of the season, the Rakaia lads allowed themselves to be sucked into the mentality of finals rugby requiring a more measured approach when they beat Prebbleton last weekend – a wrong that Sean Carter and Wayne Foxcroft will have hammered home at training this week. While still brilliant in some aspects and different points of the game, it was a very sedate Rakaia seven days ago. The flair and self-confidence in the backline was missing in action and the option of running blind as opposed to getting the ball wide seemed to leave them frustrated. It’s an itch they will have to scratch before they take to the paddock to face the unbeaten Darfield this afternoon in the Combined Country rugby Luisetti Seeds semis. Darfield have been one of the form teams of country rugby this season and fended off their fair share of battles against good teams so will be fully aware of what is required to beat a side with the power of Rakaia. Carter was pretty frank in his assessment of last week’s match. “We got sucked into it well and truly, finals rugby at its finest.

Rakaia’s Seta Koroitamana will be a key figure in their semi-final clash this afternoon against Darfield.

“But we are better than that and we know it, so we can improve which is great.” Last week the understated forward pack did the business and they will have to lay the platform again today. Seta Koroitamana is doing a power of work off the ball, as

well as producing his usual high standard of running and he will be a key figure for Rakaia this afternoon if they are to earn a place in next week’s final. Southbridge and Lincoln will clash in the other semi-final at Southbridge. Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury’s

remaining teams, Methven and Hampstead, will be out to gain some valuable confidence. Methven, who were beaten by Dunsandel, Burnham and Irwell last weekend should have an easier time of it this afternoon when they host Hornby at home. Andy Pearce will be keen to see

his men put together a complete performance after some near misses in recent weeks. Hampstead, who had the bye last weekend, will face off with the winless Rolleston in a match which gives them the potential to make it back-to-back victories after a poor start to their season.

Highlanders ready for toughest clash Highlanders coach Tony Brown is in no doubt their season-defining clash with the Crusaders this afternoon will be their toughest of the Super Rugby season to date. A nine-match winning streak of the Highlanders can’t match the 13-from-13 record enjoyed by the hosts, although both southern rivals boast a similar shape to their 2017 campaigns. Both were involved in a number

of early-season dogfights. The difference was that the Crusaders still won them, while the Highlanders lost three of their first four, including a 30-27 loss to their neighbours in Dunedin in round two. It took a late flurry of tries for the Crusaders to snatch victory three months ago and Brown expects them to be just as dogged this time.

“It’s going to be the toughest game we’ve played all year. “But rugby players play rugby for those sorts of occasions, so it’s going to be pretty exciting,” he said. Brown says several factors have contributed to their red hot form of the past two months. They have become more robust because of a crippling injury toll which has severely tested their

depth. “I think we just created a bit of momentum. A lot of our young guys have been given opportunities and they’ve come in and played with a lot of energy,” Brown said. “Our leadership group has actually led really well and when it looks like we’ve been on the wrong side of the scoreboard, our leaders take over and get us back in the game and create opportunities

for us.” Brown pointed to the two tight wins on their recent tour of Africa – a last-minute 45-41 win over the Cheetahs followed by a late 17-10 win over the Bulls. “Previous Highlanders teams would have lost those games, and we’d be fighting to make the playoffs. “We’ve created momentum and players are taking their opportunities.” – AAP

In brief Team NZ crush Brits Team NZ have powered to victory over a floundering British BAR syndicate at the America’s Cup, leaving them on course to top qualifying for the challenger series. The Kiwis looked strong in light Bermuda air while the British boat made a disastrous gibe early in the second leg to virtually cede the result. BAR skipper Ben Ainslie retired from the race midway up the penultimate leg, with his team more than 6min behind. Their smaller foils struggled in a breeze which barely surpassed eight knots, the lightest of the regatta. – NZN

Ash Coll’s winning double By Matt Markham

Matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton College A team made it a winning double for the week when they beat Hampstead A at the EA Networks Centre stadium on Thursday night. After producing a shock result to lower the colours of Celtic on Tuesday night, the Ash Coll girls repeated the performance with their 27-23 win over Hampstead.

That score leaves them unbeaten after two rounds of the local competition, following the completion of the new-look Inter Centre one last week. Defending champions, Methven, got their season back on track with a confidence-building win over Southern 31-26. The Methven ladies found it tough going against some of the strong Christchurch teams and

with only one returning player from their side last season it was always going to take time for the combinations to grow and come together. After their defeat to Ashburton College on Tuesday, Celtic got things back up and running with a more complete performance where they comfortably beat United 31-17. The best performed of the Ashburton-based sides in the In-

ter Centre competition stamped their authority in the match and sent out a warning to the other sides that the defeat midweek was a blip on the radar. In other results from Thursday night’s matches, Celtic B were too strong for Rakaia winning 38-32, Ashburton College B beat Celtic C 29-25 and Hampstead B were far too strong for Southern B, winning 42-16.

Barker denies conspiracy theories Dean Barker has poured cold water on the conspiracy theories that his Japanese syndicate deliberately lost to their stablemates Oracle Team USA in yesterday’s America’s Cup qualifying action. The two teams have enjoyed a cosy working arrangement in this cup cycle, with Oracle giving Team Japan a leg up into the event by sharing their design package with them. It’s allowed the teams to effectively run a two-boat test programme. But some punters have suggested Oracle’s generosity does not extend to letting Team Japan take any points off them in the qualifiers. Those conspiracy theories only grew more legs today, after Team Japan led for most of the race, before Oracle pulled off another impressive come-from-

One of two players could be women’s world golf No.1 by the end of the week. And Lydia Ko isn’t either of them. The New Zealander is sitting out this week’s LPGA Classic in New Jersey as part of a three-week mid-season break, opening the door for the two women who have closed on the top spot in recent weeks. Second-ranked Ariya Jutanugarn is also absent this week but will move ahead of Ko in the rankings regardless of the outcome. Jutanugarn will become the first golfer from Thailand to hold the top spot if Korea’s So Yeon Ryu finishes fourth or worse at the three-round tournament. – NZN

Dean Barker behind victory. Barker had Jimmy Spithill in trouble early on in the race, engineering a penalty on the US boat by preventing them from getting

into the startbox on time. The audacious move gave Team Japan a healthy lead off the line, which they managed to maintain over the first four legs. But Spithill managed to set up a split in the fifth leg, sailing into better breeze than the Japanese boat to pull off the passing manoeuvre. “Unfortunately we chose the wrong gate at the bottom and I can assure you it wasn’t a deliberate act, if that’s what you’re asking,” said Barker, when asked if was allowed to beat Oracle. “It was disappointing to let that race slip away after getting out of phase at the bottom gate. It’s part of racing. “These boats are hard to manage in the light air, these are some of the hardest conditions to sail the boat in, and while it’s frustrating there’s still a long way to go in this competition.”

Barker admitted he took some satisfaction over getting one over Spithill, his nemesis-turnedbuddy, in the pre-start. “It was quite pleasant prestart, I certainly enjoyed the way that all kind of unfolded and the first two thirds of the race,” he said. Earlier in the day Team Japan claimed a crucial win over Groupama Team France, elevating themselves from the deadlock at the bottom of the table. The bottom-placed team after the round robin stage wraps up this weekend will be eliminated from the regatta. “Every point is vital right now. We felt like we should have come away with a couple, but that’s just the way it goes. That’s yacht racing. We’ll try and make sure we do a better job tomorrow [against Artemis],” said Barker. – NZME

Warren Gatland has joked he hopes to keep son Bryn tackling like a demon in today’s British and Irish Lions tour opener. Lions boss Gatland will square up to son Bryn for the first time, when the Blues playmaker starts at first five-eighth for the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians against the tourists. And Gatland Senior wants his Lions to kick-start their gruelling 10-match tour on the front foot by heaping the pressure on the Barbarians. – NZN

NZ out of U20 worlds New Zealand have been outclassed 6-0 by the United States at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Korea, crashing out of the tournament in the round of 16 stage. The Junior All Whites never looked in the contest against a quality US side, meaning they depart the tournament at the same stage as two years ago, when they were hosts. After some encouraging performances in pool play, the New Zealanders lacked cohesion in possession and fell away badly on defence as the match wore on. They didn’t manage a single shot on target while the Americans managed 10, nailing five of their goals in the second half. – NZN

Aust seal bowls Australia has wrapped up the trans-Tasman bowls title with a day to spare on Queensland’s Gold Coast. The host nation can’t be caught in the men’s and women senior and junior events, nor the para-bowls contest after two of the three days such are their leads. New Zealand’s only senior success on Thursday came in the men’s singles, where Shannon McIlroy beat Scott Thulborn 21-14. The third and final day will serve as a lead-in to a seven-nation event, also at Broadbeach Bowls Club. – NZN

Small malls face uncertain future Sylvia Park and more traditional smaller, tired-looking suburban malls drawing fewer people unless they were updated. “New Zealand malls that are adapting to change and expanding their offerings such as food and beverage will continue to grow and prosper. But traditional older-style New Zealand malls that rely on legacy formats and don’t adapt will certainly loose popularity and relevance. They will eventually falter and fail. “St Lukes is one example of that, it’s a tired format and the reason the owners have to spend millions of dollars is because that format is no longer engaging people as much as it was. People are getting tired of it due to the sameness of stores. St Lukes is in desperate need of improvement and if it wasn’t improved, it would die,” Wilkinson said. Sylvia Park, which attracts 12.6 million annual shopper visits, had now become a tourist attraction in its own right, “ab-

Landlords should test properties between tenancies, he said. A new meth standard is being developed in New Zealand. Last year, the Ministry of Health recommended a different level be used to guide clean up of properties where meth had been used compared to meth lab homes, IAG noted.

Until now, the statistics have been based solely on tax residency, and have consistently shown that around 3 per cent of houses were sold to offshore tax residents. Smaller, more traditional suburban New Zealand malls face a challenging future, says a local retail expert, who backed an Australian report saying some malls could die in a decade. Chris Wilkinson of First Retail Group in Wellington said malls here still get “millions” of annual shopper visits and plans are in place to expand many but those which are not updated would face a more challenging future and could eventually shut. “Food and beverage is the future and if centres don’t adapt, it will get harder,” Wilkinson said. Brendan Markey-Towler, a Queensland University economic researcher, said smaller Australian malls would decline and could close in a decade, being replaced by apartment blocks. Wilkinson said much the same could happen here, with the gap was widening between big sophisticated malls such as

OUR VIEW

Racing – it’s about so much more than money

Matt Markham

SPORTS REPORTER

T

o many, the thought of horses running around in a circle for ridiculous amounts of cash might seem a little over the top. But for the hundreds of horsemen and horsewomen who will converge on Ashburton today for the Harness Jewels, the horse racing industry is life and today is their Everest, the crowning jewel in their calendar if you like. Excuse the pun. Yes the $1.2 million worth of stakes on offer are a nice wee boost to the coffers for those who are lucky enough to get a big slice, but for the large majority it’s about so much more. There is pride on the line. And racing people are a particularly proud bunch. The sense of ownership of not only their horses, but the racing product on offer, is quite serious and the old saying that you can bag a man’s wife, but not his horse reverberates quite true. These people, the ones you will see today out on the track and down in the stables, are what makes things tick. A horse doesn’t just arrive at the races ready to go. They are carefully nurtured and educated from the outset and guided through a process that comes naturally to them. The hours spent just to get a horse to the races are countless and the blood, sweat and tears that goes into it is immeasurable. So if you happen to be at the races today, and you see someone jumping up and down like a lunatic, or witness the raw emotion of a disappointment or success in someone’s eyes, know that it is a reflection of their passion and their pride in their horse. There will be winners today. And there will be losers. But today it’s as much about showcasing Ashburton as it is about the horse racing. Hundreds of thousands of people from across New Zealand, Australia and the rest the world will be tuned into the action. So let’s hope we can put on a show that they all will remember.

WHAT YOU ARE SAYING

C

yclists, do you feel safe on Ashburton roads? Have you had any unfortunate near-misses lately, or are local motorists overall pretty understanding and aware? What could be done better – and what messages do we need to get out – to ensure everyone’s safe and sharing the road?

ROLLING POLL This week’s question Q: Do cyclists and motorists share the road harmoniously in Mid Canterbury?

YOUR VIEW Peel Forest Recently there has been a lot of reporting on the new government Budget and its effects on different groups in our society. However, there was very little about the Budget for conservation, although the natural beauty, plants and wildlife are a major driver for tourism, a big dollarearner in our economy. Just the other day, the Commissioner for the Environment issued a report stating that 80 per cent of our native birds are in trouble. Despite all this, and more, the Government has cut the budget for the Department of Conservation again by 12 million for its core biodiversity work. Since 2008/09, the DOC has been consistently underfunded in every following year. This underfunding adds up to a total of $132 million in real inflation adjusted terms over those nine years. This has dire consequences, not only for threatened species programmes (or lack of programmes) nationally and in the regions, but also for other parts of DOC’s work like weed control. Peel Forest Park is the biggest remnant of a once large podicarp forest in South Canterbury.

Weeds like sycamores are a major threat to that park. One of a number of areas is on the photo (below left), taken three weeks ago. Sycamores are starting to climb up the hill. The DOC office Geraldine is charged with looking after this important reserve. They have planned to do control work for some time, but every year I hear that they have not got the funds to get this work done. This is affecting the natural values of the reserve and the longer it is left, the more difficult and more expensive it will be to deal with the problems. Sycamores will over time, if left uncontrolled, outcompete and dominate native vegetation and will form monotone stands. And extensive seed sources will prolong the issue. So, even from an economical point, it would be pertinent to fund DOC now to a level that they can protect our biodiversity, unless we have to assume that the Government is not interested in long-term planning, or does not really care. The fair winds aren’t blowing in Bermuda O

kay so I’m going to deviate from an opinion on anything education and go for a very prominent Kiwi. I believe Sir Russell Coutts has made a mistake and betrayed what many Kiwis hold very dear to their hearts – fairness in sports. Now I’m not anti-Russell at all. I just believe one of the greatest sportsman to have ever come from this country has made a wrong decision. This is a man who has won Olympic Gold for New Zealand, who has won numerous world titles in sailing in a range of boats and is the CEO of the Oracle Racing Team. It saddens me to say this but Mr Coutts, you have betrayed one of the golden sports beliefs we as Kiwis hold dear. That is play hard but play fair. Play ‘til the whistle goes or the ref says no, or the linesman’s flag goes up, and when it does, accept that decision. And at no point, ever use your dominance to stack the deck. I was so looking forward to this America’s Cup. These boats are Formula 1 on water. There were new players in the game and an exotic sailing location. Team New Zealand discarded conventional thinking and opted for pedal power and spent most of the set-up phase in Auckland, working with local companies to put together a serious challenge. Then this little rule change was slowly brought out in the open. From Oracle, with Russell as CEO, it was announced that they, as defenders, would race with the

Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

challengers in the build up to the cup. Russell said it was to capture the American TV market. Seriously! Americans couldn’t give a hoot about sailing. In the last America’s Cup, local TV crews interviewed citizens of San Francisco and they didn’t even know it was on, let alone in their city. The real reason for this decision was so that Oracle could

“

continue to upgrade their boat. No-one else has that luxury. Now as defenders, Oracle get automatic entry to the final, so they don’t need to race to qualify, but if they come out top in the qualifying round, they take a point through with them. Yip, even though they have made it to the final, they can have a headstart on winning the cup. On current form this is likely to happen. It is simply wrong. Imagine the scenario with the All Blacks. As current holders of the cup, they get automatic entry to the final. They play some first round games, which they win and get a bonus point for, and then rest their players for the final. The bonus point is equivalent to a converted try in the final,

It saddens me to say this but Mr Coutts, you have betrayed one of the golden sports beliefs we as Kiwis hold dear. That is play hard but play fair

match themselves against the challengers and know what improvements they needed to make. Then get this, after racing in the initial stages, the Americans take a break, during which time they can repair damage and

which the challenging team must overcome to start level. Does that sound fair? Would you back a competition if that is how it was set up? Now I could handle it if Oracle was made up of only Americans.

After all, they have voted for a total nutcase of a president and deserve the karma that is coming to them for that decision. But what makes the Oracle cheating sting is that it is headed by a Kiwi. We have always wanted fairness in sport. It is promoted heavily in primary sport and at some point there is a move to playing to win, while playing fair. Do you remember Nikki Hamblin (actually born in Dorchester) in last year’s Olympics. She is the 5000m New Zealand runner who stopped and helped another runner after they both fell. Many of the youtube clips about that moment have the words “fair play” and “Olympic spirit” in the title. The original America’s Cup was a gentlemen’s race, but Russell and Oracle have turned it into a winat-all-costs debacle. No-one likes a cheat, and I won’t go as far as to say Russell is, but he has damaged his reputation as a world-class sportsman by being part of this farce. Of course it would be brilliant if the flying Kiwis take the cup. That achievement would smash the smug smile off the Oracle team’s faces, and maybe remind Russell that New Zealanders play hard, play to win, but play fair. might know that it is an instrument in God’s hands, to use in bringing all nations to faith in Jesus Christ. I sometimes think that Pentecost reminds the Church that it is a multicultural body. This implies that the Church has always been linguistically, culturally and racially inclusive. So Pentecost is a celebration of the multicultural nature of the

Church. The Church therefore must be a community that draws all people to share in God’s grace through the Lord Jesus Christ. We are united and all people, coming from various cultures, are to come together by God’s love in Christ. The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 3:28: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. This has been made possible through the power of the Holy Spirit given to the Church at Pentecost.” As we celebrate Pentecost

US withdraws from climate change deal US President Donald Trump has announced that he is withdrawing the United States from the landmark Paris climate agreement. It’s a move that honours a campaign promise but risks rupturing global alliances and disappointing environmentalists and corporate titans. “The Paris Accord is a BAD deal for Americans, and the President’s action today is keeping his campaign promise to put American workers first,” read a White House memo to supporters explaining the President’s decision. “The accord was negotiated poorly by the Obama Administration and signed out of desperation.” The US exit from the climate pact could raise doubts about the commitment of the world’s largest economy to curbing global warming and make it more difficult to hold other nations to their environmental commitments. As of last month, 195 United Nations members had signed the 2015 accord, which was a signature diplomatic achievement for President Barack Obama. Nicaragua and Syria are the only two member states who have not signed. The Paris agreement has long divided the Trump administration, with the President taking much of the spring to make up his mind amid an intense campaign by both sides to influence his decision. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Ivanka Trump, the President’s daughter and adviser, are among those who urged him to stay in the deal, arguing it would be beneficial to the United States to re-

main part of negotiations and meetings surrounding the agreement as a matter of leverage and influence. White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt pushed

for a withdrawal, which probably can’t be finalised until near the end of Trump’s term. They, along with other hard-line conservatives, have sought to convince Trump that meeting the terms of the agreement would be harmful to the bottom lines of US businesses and would jeopardise manufacturing jobs, especially in the Midwest and other regions where Trump found deep support in last year’s election. More than 190 nations agreed to the accord in December 2015 in Paris, and 147 have since formally ratified or otherwise joined it, including the United States representing more than 80 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. It’s also heavily backed by US and global corporations, including oil giants Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil and BP. Large corporations, especially those operating in international markets, have had years to get used to the idea that there are likely to be reductions on carbon emissions, and they have been adapting their businesses accordingly for some time. Withdrawing the United States from the agreement could take years due to the accord’s legal structure and language, but such a move would weaken its goals almost immediately. The Paris agreement is designed to set the world on a path towards keeping the warming of the planet “well below” a 2C rise above preindustrial temperatures, an amount of warming that scientists would consider “dangerous” climate change. - AP

Two men Nurse pleads guilty arrested in terror raids Terror raids in Huddersfield and Sheffield are not related to the ongoing investigation into the Manchester Arena bomb attack, police have said. Two men have been arrested in the Yorkshire operations, one at a property in the Crosland Moor area of Huddersfield and another in the Kelham Island area of Sheffield. People living close to both locations reported being startled by large bangs and then seeing scores of police, many armed. The North East Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) moved to reassure the public, saying the loud noises were part of police operations to gain entry to addresses. People living around a block of flats between Dun Street and Cornish Street, close to Sheffield’s Inner Ring Road, said the bang went off at about 5.30pm on Thursday. - PAA

A former nurse has pleaded guilty to firstdegree murder in the deaths of eight nursing home residents in one of the worst serial-killer cases in Canadian history. Elizabeth Wettlaufer also pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The 49-year-old, who appeared in a Woodstock, Ontario, courtroom, admitted to killing eight seniors and hurting six others. Wettlaufer acknowledged under questioning from the judge that she injected all 14 with insulin for no medical reason. All the incidents allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2014 in three Ontario long-term care facilities where Wettlaufer worked as a registered nurse. The prosecution read from an agreed statement of facts, saying that Wettlaufer told police she knew that “if your blood sugar goes low enough, you can die.” In at least one case, Wettlaufer was spurred to act by growing rage over her job and her life, which built up inside her until she felt an “urge to kill,” the prosecution told the court. Wettlaufer deliberately injected James Silcox, an 84-year-old man with diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, with insulin the night of August 11, 2007, “hoping he would die,” the prosecution said.

“It was his time to go because of the way he acted,” the former nurse told police, according to the agreed statement of facts. She also told investigators that afterwards, she felt, “like a pressure had been relieved from me, like pressure had been relieved from my emotions.” Wettlaufer told police that dissatisfaction with her life led her to inject Clotilde Adriano, 87, with insulin, though Adriano survived. The other victims were Maurice Granat, 84; Gladys Millard, 87; Helen Matheson, 95; Mary Zurawinski, 96; Helen Young, 90; Maureen Pickering, 79, and Arpad Horvath, 75. The attempted murder victims have been identified as Wayne Hedges, 57, Michael Priddle, 63, Sandra Towler, 77, and Beverly Bertram, 68. Wettlaufer was also charged with aggravated assault against Adriano and 90-year-old Albina Demedeiros. The police investigation into Wettlaufer began last September after Toronto police became aware of information she had given to a psychiatric hospital in Toronto that caused them concern. Some family members of Wettlaufer’s victims broke down in the courtroom as Wettlaufer entered her pleas. - AP

He died at the Willow Wood Hospice in Greater Manchester, where he had been a patron for more than 20 years. Gavin Barker Associates said in a statement: “Our client Roy Barraclough has passed away today aged 81 after a short illness.” Barraclough starred in the ITV soap on and off for more than 20 years, first playing the character back in 1972 and stepping down from the programme for the last time in 1998.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit Reynolds’ charity, The Thalians, as well as The Jed Foundation, which Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, chose. Among the items auctioned off will be Reynolds’ replica ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, as well as a life-sized statue of Princess Leia with a blaster, standing inside a phone booth.

Jim Carrey to stand trial Jim Carrey will face trial over the death of his ex-girlfriend, a judge ruled today. A judge has refused to throw out two wrongful death lawsuits which accuse Carrey of supplying the prescription drugs his ex-girlfriend used to kill herself with. Cathriona White was found dead in her LA home on September 28, 2015, surrounded by empty bottles of painkillers, drugs which were acquired by Carrey using the alias Arthur King, the lawsuits allege. The Hollywood star’s attorneys had called on a judge to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuits, saying that a trial would be very painful and that the lawsuits allegations were malicious’ and ‘predatory.

Immediate travel ban requested by Trump The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to immediately reinstate its ban on travellers from six mostly Muslim countries, saying the US will be safer if the policy is put in place. The Justice Department filing to the high court yesterday argued that the federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia, made several mistakes in ruling against the Trump travel policy. Immigration officials would have 90 days to decide what changes are necessary before people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen may resume applying for visas. It takes a majority of the court, at least five justices, to put the policy into effect. The 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals called the national security concerns an after-the-fact justification for a policy that was “rooted in religious animus and intended to bar Muslims from this country.” The appeals court ruled against reinstating the travel policy by a 10-3 vote last week. The Justice Department is

The Trump administration has made a plea to the Supreme Court to let the travel ban take effect immediately. PHOTO AP “confident that President Trump’s executive order is well within his lawful authority to keep the nation safe and protect our communities from terrorism,” spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said.

“The president is not required to admit people from countries that sponsor or shelter terrorism, until he determines that they can be properly vetted and do not pose a security risk to the United

States.” The administration also wants to be able to suspend the refugee program for 120 days, a separate aspect of the policy that has been blocked by a federal judge in Hawaii and is now being considered by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Trump signed his first executive order on travel a week after he took office in January. It applied to travellers from the six countries as well as Iraq and took effect immediately, causing chaos and panic at airports as the Homeland Security Department scrambled to figure out who the order covered and how it was to be implemented. A federal judge blocked it eight days later, an order that was upheld by a 9th Circuit panel. Rather than pursue an appeal, the administration said it would revise the policy. In March, Trump issued a narrower order, but federal courts that have examined it so far have blocked it as well. - AP

Killers in court after school ground death The family of a teenager who died after he was kicked in the head during a fight in Melbourne will have to stay silent if they want to remain in court during his alleged killer’s committal hearing. Two men have been charged over the death of Long Xiang ‘Jeremy’ Hu, 19, a student at Yarra Valley Grammar school, after a fight with four other people in Melbourne’s Chinatown district

in 2016. Shengliang ‘Caesar’ Wan, 23, who has been charged with Mr Hu’s murder, is facing the second day of his committal hearing in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday. His co-accused, Hanjie ‘Victor’ Liu, 24, has been charged with affray and assault over the brawl at Latrobe Place in April 2016. The victim’s family was asked

to leave court on Thursday after an emotional outburst during evidence about Hu’s injuries. “I’m going to ask you to leave if you cannot remain quiet and I’m sorry to have to ask you,” magistrate Therese McCarthy said to the family. The warning came after Hu’s mother, holding a framed photo of her son, began crying and yelling as one of his friends described her son’s facial injuries.

Native Aussie plant kills Zika virus Queensland researchers have found a way to kill the Zika virus using compounds found in an Australian native plant. The compounds halt the virus, which causes birth defects, and stop it replicating without damage to host mammalian cells, QUT scientists say. “The research is in the early stages, but we are aiming to ultimately synthesise the compounds in question and turn our attention to preclinical testing,” lead researcher Dr Trudi Collet said in a statement. She didn’t name the plant, presumably for commercial reasons, but said it was fairly com-

mon, and its compounds were found to kill 100 per cent of the Zika infection in cells. “It’s also exciting because of the implications of this work for other viruses. Zika, dengue, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever are all from the same family of viruses – flaviviridae.” Researchers will spend the next three to five months working to synthesise the compounds, and will then to go on to test them on the other viruses. Zika causes severe disability in babies by attacking developing stem cells in the brain – but in adults, whose brains are fully

formed, it often causes no more than mild flu-like symptoms. QUT researchers have been working in collaboration with Australian-based biotech company Health Focus Products Australia. HFPA chairman and founder Dr Mark Baldock says Zika is becoming more prevalent and has been shown to remain in human sperm for six months. He says the breakthrough offers promise of one day being able to eliminate the virus from people who contract it in the very early stages, thereby reducing risks around conception. - AAP

Hu died in hospital of a brain haemorrhage and a fractured skull eight days after the fight. Wan allegedly kicked the teen in the head as he lay on the ground. Regional terror threat worsening Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stressed the need for a regional response to terrorism, saying the threat is worsening. Turnbull and his wife Lucy began their visit to Singapore yesterday with a visit to Kranji war cemetery. It comes ahead of a keynote address at a security summit, where he will discuss the growing threat of terrorism in the region and the need for a rules-based order, particularly around issues like the hotly contested South China Sea. “The threat of Islamist terrorism gets worse in our region,” Turnbull told reporters. - AAP

In brief Gunman takes life A gunman has taken his own life after bursting into a Manila casino, firing shots and setting gaming tables alight, sowing panic in a country on high alert after martial law was declared in the south. The man’s motive was likely robbery and that the incident was not terror-related, Philippine police say. National police chief Ronald dela Rosa told radio the lone gunman had not aimed his assault rifle at people during the hours-long drama, and may have been trying to steal casino chips. Around dawn, the body of the suspected gunman was found in a hotel room. - DPA

Farage in Trump probe Britain’s Nigel Farage is a “person of interest” in the US investigation into possible collusion between Russia and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the Guardian newspaper reports. I have never had any business dealings with Russia,” he was quoted as saying. - AAP

Vic police under fire Passengers have criticised Victorian police for forcing them to wait 90 minutes after a man threatened to blow up a plane above Melbourne. Malaysia Airlines flight MH128 abandoned its planned trip to Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night and turned back to Melbourne after the man was restrained by other passengers. Victoria Police officers arrived at the airport at 11:55pm. But the elite squads forced passengers to stay on the plane for almost an hour and a half before storming the plane and arresting a 25-year-old man. -AAP

Death in desert At least 44 migrants, including babies, have died of thirst after their vehicle broke down in the Sahara Desert as they were making their way to Libya. Niger is a major route for West African migrants making their way toward Europe. Most of the dead migrants were from Ghana. The victims included three babies, two children and 17 women. The official said six people survived. The bodies were discovered just days after President Mahamadou Issoufou made a plea to the leaders of G-7 industrialised nations to address the migration crisis during a meeting in Sicily. Niger is one of the world’s poorest countries and has been strained by the migration burden. - AP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To grasp the obvious is not the mark of a dull mind – quite the opposite! It can be surprisingly difficult to get a grip on ubiquitous things. You’re accepting something without question that really ought to be questioned now. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): What matters is action. When making requests today, don’t cloud the picture with a lot of background information and interesting but nonactionable items. Figure out the next action then command it. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Humans have three brains in one: the reptile brain for survival, limbic for feeling and the intellectual for reason. Today reason will be outnumbered by the other two, which are in cahoots over a shared desire. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Open-ended questions will work wonders to get to the bottom of a mystery, solve a problem or just get to know the situation a whole lot better. Try this opener: “Tell me about...” LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Maybe you’re in your own little world today, but you’re there by choice. This is the place where you can see possibilities that others don’t and live in the land of what may be instead of in the land of what is. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your concern for others doesn’t improve the world; it’s what you do about it. From the care you give your nearest and dearest to more general goodwill efforts, your positive impact will ripple outward. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You will read between the lines, as well as above and below them, and your comprehension is off the charts. But what will you do with this knowledge? Maybe nothing for a while. Let it settle in. This is wise. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You know who suggests people are the architects of their own luck? Lucky people. Anyway, there’s little time to speculate on fortune’s role, as your journey currently requires extreme focus and effort. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Make no assumptions. You never really know how another person lives until you are living as them. Also, those who claim normalcy may have a definition of “normal” that’s very different from yours. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): A minor reworking of the way you tell your story or express yourself in general will be the difference between getting people on your team and going it alone. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There are certain items – shoes, for instance – that are both functional and symbolic to you. New shoes makes you feel like you’re really going somewhere good. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It’s not fair to say the world is hostile, friendly or even indifferent. There are so many different kinds of environments in the world. You’ll benefit from exploring the tone of new places. Go in with an open mind.
