High-speed police chase BY MICHELLE NELSON

Police are seeking information about a motorcyclist who travelled through Ashburton at excessive speeds yesterday morning. The driver allegedly initially failed to stop for police signals on State Highway 1 south of Rakaia, shortly after 10am, sparking a pursuit which was abandoned due to
the motorcyclist’s dangerous driving putting other road users at risk. Senior Sergeant Richard Chambers said after the initial encounter at 10.06am the motorcyclist was observed at 10.18am riding through road works near Dromore at excessive speed. “Police considered risk to public safety and chose not to pursue the driver,” Chambers said.
Some witnesses thought the motorcycle was travelling at speeds of up to 200km. It was reported to have passed a wide-load truck on the left-hand side. A few minutes later, at approximately 10.22am the motorcyclist was seen travelling through Ashburton at dangerous speeds, allegedly weaving in and out of traffic and running red lights heading
south. East Street workers/pedestrians reported hearing the motorcycle “screaming” along the busy street in the town’s CBD, while several drivers said they had a close call with the bike. Police officers in an unmarked police car and two marked cars took up the pursuit, however, they were forced to abandon the chase again. The motorcyclist was last seen heading
south toward Timaru, Chambers said. Police are still attempting to locate the motorcyclist, who was riding a silver Kawasaki road bike solo, wearing a chequered shirt and carrying a back pack. If you see, or may have seen this motorcyclist please call Ashburton police (307-8400) or Crimestoppers (0800 555-111).
