Gunman/robberies link An armed man alleged to have robbed the Hotel Ashburton in April has now been charged with the armed hold-ups of five Canterbury pubs and bars over a fiveweek stretch.

The 23-year-old Canterbury man, who has interim name suppression, was charged last month

after allegedly being involved in the shooting of a mother and daughter and a subsequent aggravated robbery at the Hotel Ashburton. He has been charged with the aggravated robberies of the Tavern Harewood in Christchurch’s Bishopdale suburb on March 10, Brickworks Bar and Restaurant on

March 14 and again on March 29, Trevino’s Restaurant and Bar in Riccarton on March 24, Springston Hotel on April 6 and Ashburton Hotel on April 19.

On each occasion, a gun-wielding man was reported to have entered the premises shortly before closing time and demanded cash

from staff. During several of the hold-ups, shots were reportedly fired in the air, according to witnesses and police at the time.

The man is yet to enter pleas.

At Christchurch District Court yesterday, defence counsel Jonathan Eaton QC asked the court for more time before pleas were en-

tered. Judge Jane Farish remanded the man in custody without plea until June 12 where he will again appear via audio visual link from prison. Pleas to the charges must be entered that day, the judge said.

Interim name suppression was continued yesterday to preserve fair trial rights.

Fun is the name of the YMCA centenary game Giant Jenga, bows and arrows and a photo booth are not what you would normally expect at a centenary celebration.

But, YMCA South and Mid Canterbury celebrated its centenary with a twist, with guests having the opportunity to test their tower-building skills, or try on some wacky dress in the photo booth.

YMCA South and Mid Canterbury general manager Keith Shaw said it was a great way for the event to portray what the organisation is about.“It is about showing how we go about our youth development and we wanted to be more relaxed and have a bit of fun,” he said.

Guests included YMCA representatives from across the country, as well as local board members and contributors.

“It is exciting for the young people who we provide to as this is about investing in them to make them strong, resilient young Mid Canterbury people,” he said.

A variety of the different activities and programmes the organisation runs were on display, including archery equipment and the gear required to play bubble football.

The main announcements of the night were still presented in a fun way, with Shaw bouncing his way to the front of the room to give his speech on a pogo stick.

Angela Burgess was one of the many people attending the YMCA South and Mid Canterbury event who had a go at the giant Jenga.

Bosses urged to give offenders jobs

Mid Canterbury bosses are being urged to give offenders jobs, although the Department of Corrections does not expect them to prioritise released prisoners as the closure of Fairton meatworks looms.

Corrections signed up its 100th employer last month, but more are needed to provide men and women steady work and a regular income when they leave prison, the Minister of Corrections Louise Upston said recently in a press release.

“Some prisoners have never held down a job, yet we know that people who find stable employment on leaving prison are less likely to end up back in the justice system.

Having a job is crucial to reducing reoffending,” Upston said.

Corrections had seen around 9000 offenders involved in employment-related activities last year and more than 4600 achieving qualifications, a 25 per cent increase on the year before.

Corrections provided prisoners with opportunities including education, and employed fulltime tutors who supported 4769 pris-

oners and delivered programmes including in horticulture, manufacturing, construction, painting and hospitality.

Corrections also had initiatives aimed at supporting employers to take on offenders.

“Corrections does the work to find the right person for the job, and employers gain a skilled employee,” Upston said.

Principal adviser employment development for the southern region Garron Starr said employers in Mid Canterbury to which former offenders had been placed in the past included Silver Fern

Farms at Fairton.

With the threatened impending closure of the plant it was a shame to be losing this as an outlet.

He said he would not expect remaining Mid Canterbury employers to prioritise offenders, however, he wanted them to keep in mind they could think of offenders as real employee options, as they often had a lot to offer.

“I think they should think about them closely and listen to each story on their merits, people do change, people work really hard on themselves to change,” Starr said.

On the look-out for smoky chimneys

A team of spotters will be visiting Ashburton this winter looking for smoky chimneys.

The town recorded its first winter air pollution breach on Friday night but Environment Canterbury is not too worried, saying Ashburton has already made huge progress towards new national standards.

Home heating from logburners is the biggest cause of winter air pollution and the target for 2020

is just one high pollution night a year. A high pollution night is defined when average PM10 emissions are above 50; they were 57 on Friday night.

Smoke spotters have been visiting Ashburton on an occasional basis for the past two winters and will be back again over the next few months. If they observe a chimney producing visible smoke, they will leave the householder an information leaflet and a bundle of kindling.

The spotters will then return the

following week and, if the chimney is smoking for more than 15 minutes, they will leave a reminder; a third visit a warning letter; a fourth visit an abatement notice.

“There has been less emphasis on smoky chimneys in Ashburton because there has been such an improvement in air quality there,” said Environment Canterbury Air Quality director Katherine Trought.

Last winter, Ashburton recorded two high-pollution nights, with just one high-pollution night the

year before. Readings from the Ashburton monitoring station show that 93 per cent of the emissions came from home heating, 4 per cent from industry and 3 per cent from vehicles.

“A smoky chimney usually means the fire is not hot enough and unburnt firewood is a waste of money and heat,” Trought said.

“Ashburton has done well in the last couple of years.

“The reading on Friday night of 57 micrograms was fairly close to the limit of 50, so it will only take

a slight adjustment to people’s burning technique to burn more brightly and efficiently.”

New rules require woodburner users to burn smoke-free (except at start-up) and to change to cleaner heating options over time.

The MetService says there is a showery week ahead with, a series of troughs and ridges is expected to move across much of New Zealand.

Eastern parts of the South Island will see scattered rain from this afternoon.

Keeping it real at Lauriston

On a normal Monday evening, Lauriston School students could be settling down for a meal, or catching up on some homework.

However, last night, students were scavenging through freezers for food and planning out shelter as they took part in a mock-disaster situation.

The students stayed on the school grounds overnight, simulating a natural disaster which would not allow the students to leave.

School secretary Trudy Tarbotton said last week emails and text messages had been sent to parents to make them aware of what would occur.

“We asked them to not tell any of the kids what was happening, and not to send them to school with any extra clothes or food,” she said.

“It started off at 12.30pm, like any fire drill and we explained it to the students from there.”

Power was turned off in nearly all buildings and students gathered in one room together to plan out what they would do.

“They will also drop off extra supplies for the remaining students such as blankets and food.”

Atkinson said the big idea is for the students to be presented with a situation as realistic as possible, and to think about what they need

to manage. Teachers were there for safety reasons and to provide guidance, but the main planning and ideas fell on the students’ shoulders.

“They were all quite excited when it first started but as the

night goes on, the sense of adventure wears off,”she said.

“Stuff like having to share blankets and eating only bread and porridge, or whatever we can whip up, will start to make things a bit more real.”

Lack of pilot certificate earns $900 fine Aaron Christopher Robinson of Hinds was convicted and fined $900 for flying a microlight without a pilot certificate in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

The 44-year-old had pleaded guilty to the charge, as well as to a lesser charge of failing to maintain flying records on which he was convicted and discharged.

Matthew Jenkins, for the Civil Aviation Authority, said Robinson had obtained a Bantam B22 microlight aircraft and, after making enquiries, was told he would need a pilot certificate, but did not get one and went flying anyway, clocking up over 30 hours flight time.

The offence occurred between January and August last year at Hinds.

Lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said Robinson had made enquiries about officially learning to fly but it wasn’t able to come through due to people being unavailable, so he took matters into his own hands and taught himself.

He had always had a love of flying and had some experience in training for flying helicopters.

He had no passengers and was flying over his farm where he was working at the time.

“It was potentially dangerous but probably just to himself rather than to other people,” Gilchrist said.

Jenkins said the offence was a relatively serious one with over 30 hours of flight time, and referred to three fatalities in recent times from microlight crashes.

Ashburton District Court news The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

An excess breath alcohol charge had a “silver lining” for Rebekah Joy Davies in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, according to duty solicitor Clare Yardley.

Being caught with an excess breath alcohol over three times the legal limit, at 1326 micrograms per litre of breath, had brought home to Davies, 50, the necessity for doing something about her problem with alcohol, Yardley said.

Davies accepted she was an alcoholic and was now determined to get the help she needed. She was entering a detox clinic in Christchurch and had an upcoming assessment.

“She is aghast at her level,” Yardley said.

Davies had had a kidney transplant and, as such, abstaining from alcohol was important.

She was caught driving with excess breath alcohol after being stopped on the Rakaia highway near Ashburton in April, police said.

Judge Joanna Maze convicted and sentenced Davies, who had no previous convictions, to nine months’ supervision and disqualified her from driving for nine months. Davies had driven to court for her appearance yesterday, so Judge Maze said the disqualification would start from midnight last night.

Mark Allen Wilson, 45, of Allenton, was convicted and sentenced to 12 months’ intensive supervision on a drink driving charge (EBA 618mcg/l). He was also disqualified from driving for 15 months. It was Wilson’s sixth conviction for drink driving and Judge Maze reluctantly agreed to the supervision sentence.

“The court can’t dice with the safety of the public every time he drinks and drives,” she said.

Wilson was assessed by a psychiatric nurse present in court, before returning to the dock for sentencing.

He has appeared for sentencing on this particular charge a number of occasions, each time with a new address for electronically monitored sentence options.

“Sentencing has been repeatedly put back because on the day you’ve pulled another rabbit out of the hat,” Judge Maze said.

Wilson will be subject to judicial monitoring and must appear before the court monthly, with a report from Corrections Services outlining his progress, and was left in no doubt what the outcome would be if he failed to co-operate.

Raymond Walker, 60, of Geraldine, was sentenced to 100 hours of community work and disqualified from driving for 13 months on his ninth drink driving conviction (EBA 452mcg/l).

The lower level reading and the long stretch since his last conviction persuaded Judge Maze to hold back on a term of imprisonment.

Christopher John McTigue, 34, of Tinwald, was convicted on his fourth count of drink driving (EBA 1225mcg/l). He was indefinitely disqualified from driving and sentenced to 12 months’ supervision. McTigue was subject to a zero-alcohol licence when he was caught. Judge Maze warned him any review of the sentence would trigger a discharge and imprisonment would be the only option.

Peter Richard Cribb, 53, of Allenton, pleaded guilty to his fourth drink driving charge, the last one being eight years ago.

The 54-year-old was driving on the Rakaia highway and was the subject of a driving complaint before being stopped in Ashburton by police.

He refused a breath test and was taken to Ashburton Hospital for an evidential blood test, and returned a level of 147 micrograms per 100ml of blood.

Judge Maze requested a presentence report and convicted and remanded Cribb to July 3 for sentence.

Repeat drink driver Michael Shaun Greaney was also before the court with an exceedingly high level.

Police said he was approached by a member of the public in his car while asleep on April 21, but then drove off and police located him later and found he had a breath alcohol level of 1485 micrograms.

Judge Maze convicted him on his plea of guilty to the charge of his third or subsequent drink driving charge and remanded him on bail to June 12 for sentence.

Dylan Jay Mckenzie-Mccall, 24, was convicted and fined $550 and disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge.

Police said he was driving near Huntley when he was stopped due to the manner of his driving, and found to have a breath alcohol level of 687 micrograms of alcohol.

Lawyer Bevan Coombes said Mckenzie-Mccall, a truck driver, had been socialising with aquaintances in the area, and had something to eat and borrowed one of his friend’s cars to drive back to his accommodation, where his truck was parked, when he was stopped by police.

He had had no intention of driving his truck that night and was a responsible young man who was apologetic for his actions.

James Ihaka, 19, was convicted of drink driving (EBA 355mcg/l).

He was disqualified from driving for three months and fined $200.

Elvis Purua, 21, of Hampstead, was convicted on charges of shoplifting and trespasses.

He will be sentenced on July 17 following a restorative justice conference. Judge Maze asked for a pre-sentence report to include appendices for electronically monitored options.

Jayden Eric Cromie, 27, of Allenton, admitted two charges of shoplifting. In November he entered the New World Supermarket, where he removed packaging from items and secreted them in his clothing.

His offending was caught on CCTV footage. In March Cromie went to The Warehouse and removed the contents of a box marked with a $25 price tag.

He then selected items totalling $495 which he placed in the box, before paying the $25 and leaving the store.

He was directed to participate in a restorative justice conference ahead of his sentencing on July 17.

A woman who drove a car into her partner, breaking his ankle, has been sentenced to nine months’ supervision, 100 hours community work and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

The court was told Stephanie Maree Davis, 38, of Allenton, miscalculated when she drove her car up the driveway where the victim was standing talking to another person in a stationary vehicle.

Kiahn Taine Taylor-Edwards, 17, of Hinds, was sentenced to 50 hours of community work and six months’ supervision on charges of fraud and burglary. He must also pay reparations of $630 to his victims.

Nathaniel Lindsay Reeves was convicted, ordered to pay court costs and disqualified for six months on a driving while suspended charge.

Joshua Terrence John Chappell had part-served sentences of community work and supervision, on charges of intentional damage and assault, transferred to fines, of $200 and $500 respectively.

Ashley Augustus Nouata had the remainder of his community work sentence on a previous male assaults female charge cancelled after completing the majority of it and making significant progress towards rehabilitation.

Travis Hohepa Williams was convicted and discharged on a charge of breach of intensive supervision. He had failed to comply with supervision conditions when he consumed alcohol in April.

Sheldon Lee Kirton, 27, of Ashburton, was convicted and remanded to July 3 for a presentence report on a driving while suspended charge. He pleaded guilty to the charge, laid after he was stopped by police on Tancred Street in Ashburton in March.

Brooke Katie Chalmers, 31, of Netherby, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months after pleading guilty to a charge of breaching the conditions of intensive supervision.

Mid Cantabrians bring home trophy haul The Ashburton Go Kart Club brought home a haul of medals from the New Zealand championships recently.

Highlights included Andrew Green being named second in the 250cc class, six-year-old Ryan Gallagher topping the Midget class (5-9-year-olds) and Ben McLaren coming in first in the New Zealand 125cc class.

McLaren was also first last year and was also ranked second in the Super Kart class.

Pitney back in prison A convicted child killer has been recalled to prison after failing a drugs test and going on the run. Robin James Pitney was sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering 11-year-old Timaru boy Leif Wulff at Caroline Bay in 1991. Pitney was just 15 when he stabbed Wulff to death on the beachfront. He was on parole when he failed a drugs test at drug rehab centre Odyssey House, Christchurch District Court was told yesterday.

He then cut off his electronic tag and went on the run.

Trump inflames tensions There could be rocky times ahead where old alliances can no longer be taken for granted, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says after a Group of Seven (G7) summit marked by strains between US President Donald Trump and his Western allies.

“The times when we could fully rely on others have passed us by a little bit, that’s what I’ve experienced in recent days,” she said while speaking at an event in Munich.

“For that reason, I can only say: we Europeans really have to take our fate into our own hands.”

Of course, that can only be done in a spirit of friendship with the United States and Britain, she said.

“But we have to wage our own fight for our future, as Europeans, for our fate.”

Most reports out of this week’s G7 summit in Sicily saw Trump at odds with the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

The group managed to agree on the wording of goals for trade, but Trump was the lone holdout when it came to agreeing on policies to combat climate change.

Merkel called that “extremely problematic, not to say very unsatisfactory”.

The German Chancellor also said that there was resistance at the meeting to drafting language that would have called for more aid for refugees.

Women-only screening

German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggests Europeans may be on their own.

Merkel’s challenger for the chancellor job in September elections told public broadcaster ARD that the answer to Trump’s go-it-alone approach is for European countries to bond ever closer together.

“Europe is the answer,” Martin Schulz said. “Stronger cooperation among the European countries at all levels is the answer to Donald Trump.”

He added that leaders must never underestimate Trump.

“I think, people should have staked out clearer positions at the Nato summit, but most certainly by the time of the G7 summit,” he said, referring to two international summits last week where Trump ruffled feathers by criticising partner countries on defence spending

or standing as the sole veto to language endorsing action on climate change.

Schulz likened Trump’s behaviour at those meetings to that of an “authoritarian leader” who wants to “humiliate others”.

Merkel, of the centre-right Christian Democrats, will face Schulz of the centre-left Social Democrats when Germans pick their next leader in September.

It was an unusually stark declaration from the normally cautious head of Europe’s most powerful economy, and a grim take on the transatlantic ties

that have underpinned Western security in the generations since World War II. Although relations between Washington and Europe have been strained at times since 1945, before Trump there has rarely been such a strong feeling from European leaders that they must turn away from Washington and prepare to face the world alone.

The German leader received a minute-long ovation for her comments, which came as she seeks to whip up voter support ahead of September elections.

The remarks were a clear repudiation of Trump’s troubled few days with European leaders, even as Merkel held back from mentioning the US President by name.

Kushner treading on very thin ice The Trump Administration is arguing that back-channel communications are acceptable in building dialogue with foreign governments.

It is part of an effort to minimise fallout over White House adviser Jared Kushner’s reported discussion about creating a secret conduit to the Kremlin at a Russian diplomatic compound.

But some former administration officials criticised the use of such secret channels, especially during a presidential transition, saying they could send a confusing message and be manipulated by a foreign power.

Democrats raised new concerns about Kushner.

And the top-ranking Democrat on the House committee investigating potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia called for a review of Kushner’s security clearance.

It comes as Trump returned to Washington from his first international trip, renewed his tweets about unfair media coverage, and eyed a major retooling of his White House staff to deal with Russia-related scrutiny.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, the lone Trump official representing the Administration on public affairs shows, broadly characterised reports that Kushner might have sought such back-

channel communications as “a good thing”.

The comments expanded on a defence first put forward yesterday by National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster in a news conference in Sicily.

“It’s both normal, in my opinion, and acceptable,” Kelly said.

“Any way that you can communicate with people, particularly organisations that are maybe not particularly friendly to us is a good thing.”

But foreign policy experts and former officials told the Washington Post such a re-

quest of the Russians would be inappropriate unless carefully co-ordinated with the Obama Administration, which was in office at the time.

The Washington Post reported that Kushner discussed the possibility of setting up secret communications between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin during a 2016 meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

The conversation was relayed by Kislyak to Moscow and intercepted by US intelligence officials, according to US officials briefed on the reports.

Kislyak reportedly was taken aback by the request, which involved possibly using Russian communications equipment at its embassy or consulate.

“If you’re going to create a back channel that relies solely on the Russian communications and apparatus, that’s a really serious issue,” said Mark Lowenthal, a former assistant director at the CIA. “That’s extremely dangerous.”

Sky’s the limit for Rocket Lab Megan Gnad

ews that the Electron rocket reached space on Thursday was a huge moment to be celebrated on both the national and international stage.

But, what really made it something special, was that a former Ashburton College student played a role in helping the project all come together.

Ashburton-raised Peter Datlen is one of only three vehicle assembly technicians working for Rocket Lab, the American-New Zealand aerospace company.

Now based between Auckland and Mahia Peninsula, where the private site – Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 – is located, his role is to assist with building the vehicles.

I love good stories like this.

It never ceases to amaze me the incredible things kids who grow up in small rural towns can go on to achieve.

This is a project at the forefront of an industry moving at lightning speed and something we should be celebrating and championing as our country embraces such cutting-edge technology.

They are, after all, one of only a few companies to ever develop a rocket from scratch (which they did in under four years), developing everything in-house and building the world’s first private orbital launch range with a small team.

While they didn’t quite reach orbit, they say reaching space in the first test puts them in a strong position to accelerate the commercial phase of their programme and “make space open for business”.

Over the coming weeks, Rocket Lab’s engineers in Los Angeles and Auckland will work through the 25,000 data channels that were collected and the results will inform measures taken to optimise the vehicle.

Rocket Lab’s commercial phase will see Electron fly alreadysigned customers, including Nasa, Spire, Planet, Moon Express and Spaceflight.

Not only is Ashburton’s own Peter Datlen involved in something that’s a world first, it’s a case where New Zealand is literally involved in changing the face of the industry and setting the tone for what they hope to achieve in the near future.

From the looks of what was achieved last week, it certainly seems the sky’s the limit.

armers can feel reasonably satisfied with the spending Steven Joyce promised in his first Budget last week, but would rue there wasn’t more investment in science capability.

A critical lack of good quality soil scientists is just one issue that springs to mind as we struggle with the environment and production issues ahead of us.

But the broad-brush stuff first: it’s hard to quibble with the Budget’s focus on boosting public services, social investment and infrastructure. But while we now know the high level numbers, what will be of interest to many in the provinces is how those investments are spread around.

If it’s done on a per capita basis the results might not be that big a help to the regions. In the big population centres you get economy of scale, with every dollar spent able to do slightly more than it would in the regions. So to generate similar social outcomes, it may well be that slightly more needs to go into the provinces.

In terms of the primary industries, there is additional money for MPI on biosecurity, irrigation and trade facilitation. These areas are all important priorities for farmers and will boost regional economies.

A significant biosecurity incursion could decimate our economy so vigilance needs to be extremely high. And as a country that relies on exports to make its way in the world we need to spend wisely on trade.

The increase in science and innovation spending was welcome news, but Federated Farmers would have preferred more emphasis on building our science capability, particularly in biological and environmental sciences, rather than it going to companies for commercialisation.

Pretty much everyone agrees – farmers included – the need to do more work to protect and enhance waterways and the wider environment, yet we have a shocking lack of top-line soil scientists.

Pretty much everyone agrees on the need to do more work to protect and enhance waterways and the wider environment, yet we have a shocking lack of top-line soil scientists. knowledge in the biological area, we are likely to come up with better solutions to the challenges facing the agri-sector.

I’ve been thinking about those potential surpluses now forecast and how they might be best invested. Obviously parties from all sides will be looking where to have a spend-up, with more than a casual eye on how to generate the most votes. This against a background of dreaming up more rules which will force costs on farmers in relation to environmental protection.

If we look to sediment in waterways as an example, it’s important to note the problems that exist are legacy problems.

They weren’t caused by the current generation of farmers but they’ll be the ones expected to pay to deal with them. Many of today’s farmers were not able to factor those costs into the price they paid for their properties.

tion, in many cases they were being asked and even subsidised to clear land. At the time we didn’t have a proper appreciation of the effects.

I chose sediment as an example because in my region we have a programme to try and address it: the Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI). It came into being just over a decade ago and is a collaboration between farmers, the regional council and government.

I think we should be using some of those future surpluses to take this concept wider, targeting those catchments that need improvement, and boosting research and capability.

Some might view this as subsidies for farmers. I remind them the current generation have paid land prices which didn’t factor into these costs, and to meet the growing bill their interest payments could cripple many and wipe large amounts of equity off the balance sheets.

Farmers involved with SLUI in my region are still making substantial investments of their own on improvements to their farms, highlighted by the SLUI Plans. But having wider support makes it possible to expand and accelerate this.

The support happens only initially; once the farmer is able to pick up the ball and run with it, then it is up to them.

Water quality trends in our region are improving, with the expectation that SLUI will reduce sediment to waterways by 27 per cent per annum.

Now that is useful spending.

‘Negative impact’ for workers People who lose their jobs through redundancy face lower pay and find it harder to get another job for years after, new research has revealed.

Public policy think-tank Motu Economic and Public Policy Research Trust found people who were hit by an involuntary job loss had a 20 to 25 per cent lower employment rate the year after – and a 10 per cent lower employment rate five years later.

Their earnings were also about 25 per cent lower in the first year of their new job and remained 15 per cent lower five years later.

Dean Hyslop, senior fellow at Motu Economic and Public Policy Research and lead author on the study, said his research showed involuntary redundancy had a large and lasting negative impact on workers’ subsequent employment and earnings.

“Although employment rates improved gradually, five years later their employment rate remained around 10 per cent lower than comparable workers.”

Hyslop said while government

income support partly helped, total incomes of workers who lost their jobs remained substantially lower than those who did not.

The impacts were even worse for those who lost their jobs during the recession from 2008.

Workers who lost their job during that time also saw a bigger hit on their incomes despite being more likely to be on a government benefit.

Hyslop said those who lost their job were 6-11 per cent more

likely to receive a benefit the year after and 3 to 4 per cent more likely to after five years.

“However, despite such income support, displaced workers’ total individual income was about 30 per cent lower than comparable workers during the first year after displacement, and about 20 percent lower after five years.”

“Even though workers under 30 experience a sizeable employment loss in their first-year after losing their job, the longer term effects of displacement are negligible.”

“In contrast, on average displaced workers over 50 have about 30 per cent lower employment in the first year, and 11 per cent lower employment after five years,” he said.

The analysis was based on the Survey of Family Income and Employment sample of workers over the period 2001-10, which was then matched to administrative employment and earnings data from Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Data Infrastructure from the period 1999-2015.

Nelson booming, Auckland sliding Nelson continues to top ASB’s regional economic scorecard thanks to booming tourism, horticulture and viticulture sectors but Auckland is sliding as it hits capacity constraints in construction.

Northland’s economy has had a surprising lift in activity after falling for the past two quarters.

ASB’s regional economic scoreboard takes the latest quarterly regional economic statistics and ranks the performance of New Zealand’s 16 regional council areas.

The fastest-growing regions gain the highest ratings and a good performance by the national economy raises ratings across the board.

Ratings are based on measures such as employment, construction, retail trade and house prices.

Nelson’s second-straight quarter at the top was a result of booming tourism, horticulture, viticulture and construction, said ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley.

This, combined with high consumer confidence, painted a positive picture for the region in the year ahead.

Northland jumped up seven spots to second place for overall economic growth as the region continues to benefit from the national tourism boom.

Tuffley noted that while confidence remained lower in Northland its labour market was clearly improving, he said.

Auckland was suffering growing pains, he said.

It dropped one place in the regional rankings because even though activity remained high the rate of growth was slipping.

Housing was the best example of this, Tuffley said.

“Auckland residential building consents are down on a year ago but not because the demand for homes isn’t there. There are simply too many impediments in the way.”

Canterbury was bottom of the scoreboard this quarter.

Activity remained high in the region but the slowdown is across a broad range of growth indicators as the rebuild continues, including tourism.

“The decline in guest nights remains a thorn in Canterbury’s side and is the weakest region in the country for this measure of activity,” Tuffley said.

However, dairy income is expected to boost activity in rural Canterbury into 2018.

The dairy price revival was already starting to boost growth and was already starting to help in some regions.

Manawatu-Whanganui was this quarter’s biggest mover, up nine places on the scoreboard to fourth place, from 13th.

“The recovery in dairy incomes, paired with a fair outlook for other primary producers, has been positive for Manawatu-Whanganui,” Tuffley said.

Buy now, pay later Trade Me will offer a new service later this year where customers can buy products and then pay them off in instalments. The online auction site has teamed up with Australian firm Afterpay for the service, which doesn’t charge buyers an interest and will likely be available for goods valued between $20 and $800. No changes for bank The Co-operative Bank, which distributes rebates to its customershareholders, posted flat annual earnings as shrinking margins offset lending growth from an expanding customer base, and as impairment charges on bad debts rose. Net profit was little changed at $10.3 million in the 12 months ended March 31, with an unchanged $2.1m rebate, the Wellington-based bank said in a statement. The bank’s mortgage lending grew 17 per cent in the year, driving most of the gain in its loan book to $2.1 billion as at March 31.

Warning for Goff Heart of the City is calling on Auckland Council not to treat business ratepayers as an easy target in its drive to save costs. In his first budget, Mayor Phil Goff has set a “core objective” that all ratepayers receive a general rates increase of 2.5 per cent. This has meant postponing a policy of reducing business rates for one year. In 2013, Auckland Council decided to reduce the rates differential between businesses and residential properties over a period of 20 years. - NZME

Net loss for Volpara Volpara Health Technologies, the Wellington-based, ASX-listed digital health company, narrowed its annual loss and said year-onyear growth, in terms of total contract value, continues to accelerate. Volpara reported a net loss of $9.6 million in year to March 31 versus $30.4 million in the prior year or a loss of 7 cents per share versus a loss of $1.08 per share, it said.

More passenger delays British Airways said many of its IT systems were back up and running yesterday, but some travellers will likely face cancellations and delays for a third straight day after a global computer failure grounded hundreds of flights. BA chief executive Alex Cruz said the airline was running a “near-full operation” at London’s Gatwick Airport and planned to operate all scheduled long-haul services from Heathrow.

But he said there would still be delays, as well as some cancelled short-haul flights.

BCI irrigators to vote on EA buyout

Shareholder irrigators on the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation scheme have been asked to consider a resolution to buy out Electricity Ashburton’s 50 per cent stake holding in the company.

A recent review of the joint venture arrangements provided an opportunity for irrigators to consider if they would support the buyout, BCI general manager John Wright said A special meeting of shareholders was held earlier this month in relation to a proposal to take 100 per cent control of the BCI Scheme.

The resolution was overwhelmingly supported with shareholders backing the board’s proposal to buy out Electricity Ashburton’s share of the irrigation scheme, Wright said.

The buyout offers BCI a twofold advantage. Firstly, it would give irrigating shareholders more control over the company and secondly, by increasing equity the annual charge to shareholders would be reduced by removing the commitment to pay Electricity Ashburton’s annual fee.

“It would allow us control over our own destiny,” Wright said.

Electricity Ashburton’s investment, signed of in December 2009, was critical to the establishment and subsequent expansion of the scheme providing equity, governance expertise, and commercial discipline.

“At the time it was reasonably challenging to raise capital among the irrigator shareholder base,”

John Wright Wright said. However, shareholder opinions have changed with the passage of time.

“Over time people have become more confident with the product that we’re offering and therefore more confident in investing in the scheme.”

BCI now has about 200km of piped water irrigating some 20,000 hectares.

“It’s grown relatively quickly in the seven years we’ve been operating, there’s quite a bit of infrastructure there now,” Wright said.

Over the next three months the consultation process will be completed and BCI shareholders will be asked to make their decisions concerning further investment in the scheme.

“If they don’t the joint venture will continue, but the opportunity is there to at least consider the opportunity,” Wright said.

BCI is now in the process of preparing a Product Disclosure Statement to present to shareholders inviting investment of new capital to enable the buy-out to proceed.

Chicken, camembert and plum parcels

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan and brown Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast for two minutes on each side.

Set asisde.

■ Layer two sheets of filo together with melted butter. Top with one chicken breast, quarter the camembert and quarter the plum sauce.

Wrap up, folding in the sides to form a parcel.Place on a lined baking tray, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame and poppy seeds.

■ Bake for 25 minutes until golden.

A safe on the street

ecently I was working on a series of clipping files pertaining to local businesses.

Amidst the modern articles about openings and closures, I came across an envelope with photocopied photographs of the Bank of Australasia – a building which still stands on the corner of East and Tancred streets.

I was especially interested in a series of sepia images, one of which had a gentleman sitting on a safe in the middle of the street.

The note on the back of the image suggested this was taken about 1911 and may have been when the building was remodelled. I needed to investigate.

The original building was opened in 1881 and was on the same site.

It was a small, single storeyed wooden structure.

In January 1910 the Ashburton Guardian stated that the bank had decided to erect a new building with an adjoining manager’s residence.

Tenders were called and Christchurch firm W Greig and Son won the contract.

The Guardian promised locals that the building, which would be one of the most handsome in the town, was to be a two-storeyed brick structure with a [red] tiled roof and would be erected on the site occupied by the present premises. It was estimated that it would cost in the neighbourhood of £2000.

Although the contractors were from out of town the bricks would be made locally and the timber came from local mills – the ornamental facings, however, would be Oamaru stone.

I was unable to find out when exactly the new building opened but it appears to be some time around July, 1912.

The old buildings But what of the story surrounding the photos that captured my attention?

Obviously, if the new building was taking over the site, the old building had to be removed.

In September 1911 Friedlander brothers were advertising a sale of the site’s buildings. The bank was not mentioned though it seems that it was still operating

at this time. On offer were two cottages, a stable, lavatory and coal shed, coach house, two large gates, a tank stand, windmill pump and piping, two 800 gallon tanks, and 75 feet of fancy wire fencing.

There is no mention of the results of the sale but Thomas Undrill, a local businessman, asked the council if he could place a section of the bank building on part of a reserve, which he wanted to lease.

The council said that as the building was very old they would only agree to consider the request after an expert had looked at the building.

Although, as I said, I can’t find a date when the new bank opened, on July 13, 1912, the old bank itself was up for sale. It is clear that these photos date from that period.

It looks as if the building was removed to another location, judging by the rails and the fact that the building is still intact, rather than simply a pile of debris.

I would be very interested in finding out what happened to the building.

As for Mr Soal who is guarding the safe, it seems that for a time.

George Soal worked as a clerk for the bank, so perhaps they were moving it to the new building rather than selling it as well.

It is easy to think that the new building was required as the old building had outlived its usefulness, and certainly looking at the images it seems to show a sad, old structure.

However, while looking for information for this article I located another photograph, dated 1900, showing the building looking quite sturdy, with what we assume is the manager’s cottage next door.

Perhaps the bank decided that progress demanded a bigger, more impressive edifice.

The same collection that had the sepia images also had one of the new building, dated 1948 – it does indeed look handsome and located at the intersection of two of the busiest streets in town, it certainly made its presence felt.

Such finds as these make working with Ashburton Museum’s archive collection never boring and always full of chance finds and surprises.

The new Bank of Australasia in the 1940s, that still stands on the corner of East and Tancred streets.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum.

In brief Another top 10 for Lee Danny Lee’s claimed consecutive top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour.

After his fifth placed finish last week at the tournament in Irving, Texas he’s finished tied for sixth at the Fort Worth event cross-state.

The Kiwi carded a final round even 70 to finish seven under for the tournament, three shots off the winner Kevin Kisner in sixth. Any hopes Lee had of converting his overnight second place into a victory evaporated with two frontnine bogeys.

Two from two for TNZ Two wins from two races, but Team NZ helmsman Peter Burling insists there is still plenty of room for improvement over future races at the America’s Cup qualifier series off Bermuda. The Kiwis recorded wins over Team Japan and Ben Ainslie Racing (GBR) on the second day of challenger racing, bringing their record to 3-1 for the regatta. But Burling considered himself somewhat lucky to come out on top, highlighting one or two errors that could easily have cost them.

Spectacular crash mars Indy New Zealander Scott Dixon has posted a message on social media after walking away from a dramatic crash on lap 54 of the Indianapolis 500.

The pole-sitter got cleaned up when Jay Howard’s car rebounded off the wall and left the Kiwi with nowhere to go.

Dixon’s car was thrown into the air and landed on top of the wall before disintegrating.

The 36-year-old got out of the car uninjured.

“Thanx for all the messages.

That was a wild ride. Bummed for #campingworld. Now onto the Championship.Congrats @ TakumaSatoRacer so happy 4 u,” Dixon posted on Twitter.

Earlier Dixon told media that it was a ‘rough ride’ into the wall.

“Just a little beaten up there.

It was definitely a rough ride,” Dixon said.

“I am just bummed for the team. We had a great shot.

“We got a little loose on the first stint there but they dialed it in and we were starting to make some progress.

“Overall I just think we were a little bit light on downforce but later in the race that would have been the right move to have.

“I’m glad everyone is ok – it was a wild ride for sure.

“A big thanks to Dallara and everybody with the safety standards we have now.”

Dixon had to make a split second decision about which way to move to try and avoid Howard’s car but went the wrong way.

“I was hoping that Jay was going to stay against the wall but obviously with the impact it started to turn down but I had already picked that way to go and there was just nowhere else

to try and avoid him,” he said.

“I’m glad he’s ok too.

“You just have to believe in the safety progress we have had over the last many years.”

The race was red-flagged as the debris was cleaned off the track.

Takuma Sato went on to win the race from veteran Penske driver Helio Castroneves.

Sato made the crucial pass on the three-time winner with three laps remaining and held on to drink the quart of milk in victory lane.

Sato, the Andretti Autosport driver, came very close to winning the 2012 running of the Indianapolis 500 but was beaten on the final lap by Dario Franchitti.

“Unbelievable feeling. It was a tough race,” Sato said.

“It is beautiful – I grabbed something I left behind in 2012.”

Two-time Formula 1 world

champion Fernando Alonso was right in the mix for victory until his Honda engine blew with 20 laps remaining.

Other leading contenders that failed to finish included Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden.

Earlier Dixon made a safe start at the Brickyard, leading the field through the opening laps.

He was passed by Ganassi team-mate Tony Kanaan and the pair worked together to remain at the front of the field through the opening stint.

Dixon’s car became loose and very hard to drive in the last couple of laps before his first pitstop and he dropped a couple of spots but got back up to speed upon completion of the stop.

There was a massive crowd on hand on Memorial Day in the United States.

Lolohea signs up with Wests Tigers Tuimoala Lolohea could play for the Wests Tigers as soon as Saturday’s NRL clash against St George Illawarra after joining his new team-mates for training yesterday.

After weeks of lobbying for a release from the New Zealand Warriors, Lolohea was finally let go last week and has now had his contract rubber-stamped by the NRL to play this weekend.

The Tigers have formally an-

nounced his signing until the end of 2019, paving the way for his possible inclusion in the halves when their round 13 team gets named today.

Tigers coach Ivan Cleary is delighted to bring Lolohea to the club.

“Tui has shown that he is a player of tremendous natural talent.

“We look forward to helping him develop, and reach his true potential, in the coming years.”

Lolohea, who has played one test for New Zealand in 2015, is likely to partner Luke Brooks in the halves this season but widely tipped to be the club’s long- term solution at fullback.

His arrival is the latest in a flurry of recruitment hits for the oncebesieged club, joining former Warrior Russell Packer, current Warrior Ben Matulino, Josh Reynolds and Chris McQueen on the books next year.

Cam Smith fires up Australian captain Cameron Smith has not ruled out strike action after being angered by the NRL’s response to the player union’s pay demands. Smith was less than impressed by leaked NRL emails to clubs that claimed the Rugby League Players Association’s collective bargaining agreement proposal was unaffordable and showed “an apparent disregard for the game”. Asked if strike action was now possible, RLPA general president Smith said: “We have some ideas in mind but hopefully it doesn’t come to that”. Smith was fuming over the “inflammatory language” in the NRL emails which claimed the RLPA’s pay demands would destroy the game.

Widdop, Dugan return St George Illawarra are ready to breathe fire in the NRL again with star duo Gareth Widdop and Josh Dugan possible inclusions for this week’s clash against the Wests Tigers. After missing the Dragons’ past two games with a fractured cheekbone, Dugan only has to come through unscathed in Wednesday’s State of Origin to take on the Tigers at ANZ Stadium on Saturday.

Widdop, who hasn’t played since round eight, is rated the lesser chance of returning from a knee injury but participated in the club’s first field session yesterday following last week’s bye.

Grant Wilson’s hot form on the indoor bowling mats around Ashburton continued over the weekend as he added the mixed fours title to his list of achievements for 2017.

The Willowby bowler has now won every major tournament competed for so far this season with victories in the Jim Patterson Championship Singles, the Championship Pairs, the mixed pairs and then Sunday’s victory in the mixed fours as well.

It bodes well for his chances when he will be one of a num-

ber of Ashburton indoor bowlers heading to Nelson to compete in the South Island championships over the course of the long weekend.

On Sunday Wilson teamed up with Willowby clubmates, Graeme Chapman and Rowena MacKenzie, along with Methven’s Chris Talbot to win the coveted mixed fours which will see the quartet head to the zone playoff with a chance of heading to Wellington to compete in the New Zealand final should they be successful.

With just four teams competing for the title, Wilson’s side

picked up two wins and a draw from their three matches to finish on top of the group.

They beat Simon Thomas’ side in the opening game of the day before drawing with Russell Ellis’ side in the second match.

Victory was secured in the final round of the day when they were successful over the Mark Sheard skipped side, winning 8-7.

The quartet will now head to Christchurch on July 1 where they will square off with the winners from Oamaru, South Canterbury and Canterbury for the right to compete in Wellington against the other zone winners

on September 16.

Indoor bowls headed out into the country on Saturday for the annual Rakaia triples.

Mark Sheard and Charlie and Joyce Cleghorn emerged on top of the group in a close finish.

On Thursday night the Willowby Fours were contested with 16 teams taking to the mats at the McNally Street Stadium.

Mat Bassett, Ken MacKenzie, Taylor MacKenzie and George Bishell emerged on top of the pile, winning by half a point from the Methven side of Martin Nordqvist, Chris Talbot, Adrienne Richards and Jenny Nordqvist.

Black Ferns Sevens rise to the occasion The Black Ferns Sevens are the latest exemplars of the old adage ‘Defence wins championships.’

There was uncertainty about how they would fare in Langford, Canada, for the penultimate leg of the Women’s World Series.

They were missing Sarah Goss, Kelly Brazier and Portia Woodman to the Black Ferns.

But they responded with some style and no little grit, conceding just five tries in their six games and holding off hosts Canada 17-7 in a bruising cup final.

The upshot is that they now sit on 96 competition points, 14

clear of Canada and Australia, who could only manage the bronze medal with a 26-12 win over France.

New Zealand should only need to make the cup semifinals next month in France to regain the World Series title.

New Zealand and Canada were also finalists last month in Japan, where New Zealand edged the win 17-14.

But in the early exchanges, it looked like New Zealand would run away with the game. They monopolised possession and ran in tries to Michael Blyde, her

ninth (and a solo effort) of a tournament in which she filled Portia Woodman’s role with aplomb, and skipper Tyla Nathan-Wong, who scored off a lineout move.

Julia Greenshields hit back for Canada, and the home side then poured on the pressure.

However, New Zealand were tenacious in defence and took the 12-7 halftime lead.

The second spell was as bruising a seven minutes as you will see, as New Zealand denied Canada any chance of mounting a comeback.

Their breakdown work, led by

player of the final Ruby Tui, was especially effective. A late turnover saw Alena Saili dive over in the corner to seal the victory.

“I’m stoked. The biggest thing out of this tournament is the heart these ladies showed from game one. They really left mana out on the field,” says coach Allan Bunting.

Blyde’s five tries against England on day one was the individual highlight, but the collective defensive effort on day two, allowing just three tries in three clutch games against top opposition, was admirable. - NZME

Meeting over axing saga Australia’s long-running Super Rugby team axing saga is set to be thrashed out behind closed doors at an extraordinary general meeting of the Australian Rugby Union on June 20. The ARU has locked in the date for the meeting, which will be held in Sydney three days after the Wallabies’ test against Scotland at Allianz Stadium, and four days before they face Italy at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium. After three NPCs with Auckland (1999, 2002-03) and the RWC Sevens in 2005 with Fiji, Pivac can now count the 2016-17 Guinness PRO12, won last season by Pat Lam’s Connacht. Manning team confident Champion driver Kerryn Manning heads back to New Zealand and to Ashburton for a tilt at the Harness Jewels, as a “last trip winner.”

Who can forget that historical 2015 NZ Cup when Manning because the first female to drive the winner of the great race aboard her former Kiwi stayer Arden Rooney.

When Manning lands in Christchurch on Thursday it will be her first time back in New Zealand since that historic raid with Arden Rooney.

And, just like with Arden Rooney, the “team” is back together.

Manning’s husband, Grant Campbell will be there awaiting her arrival in Christchurch, and Arden’s Rooney owner, Merv Butterworth, also owns their Jewels hopeful Mr Mojito.

“Ideally we’d have liked another lead-up run, but we are really happy where he’s at.”

Manning said Mr Mojito simply “ran out of puff” late when third to My Field Marshall at his first run in 2017 at Melton last Saturday week, but had trained on very well since.

“That was a really hotly contested race the other night.

“They ran a record lead time and, although he drew the back row, he was running the time with them because I pushed through hard to hold my spot,” she said.

“After that we probably got too good a run, if that’s possible.

Tough choice for Brad Brad Williamson has chosen to drive Majestic Man in the 2-yearold trotters section of the Harness Jewels at Ashburton on Saturday.

Brad was given the choice of drives by his trainer father, Phil, who also Springbank Lachie and Majestic Connies in the race.

Brother Matthew is driving Springbank Lachie and another brother, Nathan will take the reins on Majestic Connies.

Manning is looking forward to driving at Ashburton for the first time and is thrilled with barrier two for Mr Mojito.

“It looks a really good track and for a horse who can hang a bit like him, the big track should suit him,” she said.

Oaks going to Doomben The Queensland Oaks meeting has been transferred from the muchmaligned Eagle Farm track to Doomben. Racing Queensland is also expected to confirm the Stradbroke Handicap meeting on June 10 will be transferred to Doomben but it will first have to be cleared legally by the RQ board. RQ officials met with Brisbane Race Club representatives for an hour yesterday morning to discuss the changes. BRC chairman Neville Bell said he was unable to comment further than to confirm the club had been instructed to race at Doomben and would comply.- AAP

Sonny Bill likely to start for ABs The midfield is looming as perhaps the biggest unknown for the All Blacks over the next six weeks.

While Sonny Bill Williams suffered a knee injury during the Blues draw against the Chiefs at the weekend, he showed he is approaching top form and probably deserves to start in the first test against the British and Irish Lions.

He will have the potential to play two more matches for the Blues before that first test on June 24 – against the Reds in Apia on Friday, and against the Lions at Eden Park five days later on Wednesday next week – but, now that Tana Umaga’s men are officially out of the Super Rugby playoffs, the Blues may elect to play him only in the latter.

They will probably take a conservative approach because they will be desperate to start Williams at second-five against the Lions, a match obviously significant for everyone involved.

The 31-year-old has been building since his return from an Achilles injury suffered last year, a comeback halted by a concussion which ruled him out of his team’s victory over the Cheetahs just over a fortnight ago.

But he showed during his 56 minutes against the Chiefs, one of his former teams, that he is nearing his best.

His early wrestle with opposite Johnny Faauli suggested he was up for the physical stuff and he didn’t disappoint there; he was more direct than at any other time this season and his offloading game was back too.

If Williams is fit following the Blues v Lions match, he will almost certainly get plenty of game time in the All Blacks’ test against Samoa at Eden Park on June 16, a match designed to get Steve Hansen’s men physically and mentally ready for the three-test series against the Lions.

If so, it will be Williams’ first for the national team since the World Cup final in 2015.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie described Wil-

liams as a “handful” after his team’s 16-all draw at Eden Park, and the big No12 has the potential to create serious problems for Warren Gatland’s men.

Ryan Crotty must be odds-on to partner Williams in the first test.

Rested for the Crusaders’ recent victory over the Rebels in Melbourne after suffering from concussion in the match against the Chiefs in Suva, Crotty is in outstanding form.

His decision-making and defence has again been consistently excellent and he must be considered one of the best distributors at Hansen’s disposal.

Others in the mix will be Malakai Fekitoa, George Moala and Anton LienertBrown, but the first two, while probably more direct that Crotty, lack the vision on attack that he has and Lienert-Brown is yet to recapture his form of last season.

Ben Smith, back to his best for the Highlanders after ankle trouble, must be the favourite to start at fullback, while the All Blacks coaches will back themselves to get the best out of wings Julian Savea and Waisake Naholo.

Hooker Dane Coles will start if he is fit, and that’s a big unknown too following his concussion troubles, with the loose forward mix also providing potential for debate.

Jerome Kaino, Kieran Read and Sam Cane should make up the loose forward mix if healthy, but Kaino’s knee issue and Read’s broken thumb complicate matters.

Both will be considered for the first test even without any game time.

Liam Squire is the obvious candidate to replace either Kaino or Read, but his own broken thumb means Scott Barrett could be a possibility to start at No6 against the big Lions pack.

Should that be the case, Luke Romano could go on to the bench.

Jordie Barrett, yet to make his test debut, must be considered a bench chance for his ability to cover midfield to fullback and goalkicking excellence.

Sport Seventh win for Feng Shanshan Feng shot a four-under 68 yesterday to win the LPGA event by one stroke over Australian Minjee Lee and Korean Sung Hyun Park.

Chinese Feng earned her first victory of the season and seventh of her career, finishing with a 19-under total of 269. She led by one shot after a bogey-free third round Sunday, then kept the competition at bay at Travis Pointe Country Club. Feng, a bronze medalist for China at the 2016 Olympics, led by four strokes with four holes to play, but she made a bogey on No.16 and Lee birdied 17.

But not even a bogey on the last hole could deny Feng victory.

Ben McTavish from the Ashburton RSA eyes up the bullseye on Sunday at the fourth round of the Central Darts Clubs of New Zealand competition. McTavish was one of more than 70 players to compete in the tournament which sees teams from Oamaru, Waimate, Timaru and Geraldine, as well as the Ashburton RSA side, competing each month. Cup tension escalates The fall-out from yesterday’s dramatic crash on day one of the America’s Cup Qualifiers has continued, with tensions escalating between rival skippers Ben Ainslie and Dean Barker.

He believes Barker was the main aggressor, and the accident was more a result of skittish nature of the foiling catamarans.

So when Barker had a subtle dig at Ainslie for his unapologet-

ic stance, it did not go down well with the British sailing knight.

Barker joked Ainslie should perhaps send the Team Japan shore crew a universal peace offering for the trouble he caused.

“I think the shore crew are looking forward to Ben bringing some beers down for them. He didn’t do it last night, he’ll probably do it tonight,” said Barker.
