Hopes that Ashburton’s State Highway 1 traffic congestion might be soon be resolved were dealt a death blow yesterday. A second bridge across the Ashburton River and traffic lights at Walnut Avenue’s intersections with East Street and State Highway 1 have been pushed down the New Zealand Transport Agency’s to-do list, councillors were told at an Ashburton District Council work-
shop. When councillor Russell Ellis wanted to know when the bridge would be built so the council could put costs into its budget, he got an answer he didn’t expect. Regional transport manager Michael Blyleven delivered a double whammy, saying the second bridge would not be built for around 10 years and that until the council coughed up half the costs, the Walnut Avenue lights would also stay on the backburner. Currently NZTA would pay 51 per
cent of the cost of the bridge. It would only pay for the West Street lights, but not the East Street lights on Walnut Avenue, even though it insists one set of lights cannot be installed without the other. That did not sit well with councillor Neil Brown.
