While there would never a good time for dairy farmers to be forced to cull their herds, if there was, this time of year would probably be it, dairy farmer and Ashburton District deputy mayor Neil Brown says. He said given the end of the dairy season was approaching, it would give those farmers whose properties were infected with mycoplasma bovis time to dispose of their stock, clean and disinfect their

property and then leave it empty for the required 60 days before repopulating it in August – in time for the start of next season. However, he said, it would still be very difficult for farmers who did have to cull stock. “It won’t be easy for them. Those cows have been part of their business, sometimes for years.”

Brown did not expect sourcing cattle to repopulate farms would prove to be a significant problem. He said there were more than 5 million dairy cows in New Zealand, which meant the just over 22,000 animals that have to be destroyed represented only about 0.5 per cent of the national herd, so finding replacements should not be too difficult.
