Strong start to harvest around the district

Normally driving combine harvesters is a male domain, but at Barrhill, Tracey Wylie is at the controls while her husband Peter drives the trucks ferrying the bins of grain back to the silos.

“The truck doesn’t have air conditioning, so I’m not going in that,” Tracey said.

The Wylies were making the most of hot northwesterly conditions on Wednesday to harvest a paddock of Catherine milling wheat which was yielding nine tonnes a hectare on their dryland farm.

It was the first time they had grown the variety and they were pleased with the results.

The couple had parked up their harvesting machinery on Tuesday when temperatures hit a high of 39deg C, because of the fire risk.

“There are too many moving parts on a combine harvester,” Peter Wylie said.

“We weren’t under pressure to get crops harvested.

“The last week has been great harvesting weather and we are right up to date.”

He described this year’s harvest as being “good-average”.

While the Wylies finish 1000 lambs in winter they are mainly arable.

Their main crop is malting barley, harvesting 900 to 1000 tonnes a year.

“We’ve done 300 tonnes of that so far and it is all good quality, with correct protein levels.”

All the malting barley goes to Marton-based Malteurop, New Zealand’s biggest malting company.

Boosting wellbeing through exercise

They might not be your traditional exercise classes, but to those taking part, the exercise sessions run by Hospice Mid Canterbury play an important role in improving their quality of life.

Classes for the year start next month with two sessions planned

to meet the needs of clients with neurological conditions and for those with dementia. Each session is tailored specifically for individual clients, general manager Debbie Mackle said.

The classes aim to help build muscle strength, improve balance and boost confidence, and are available to all hospice clients and while they are free, bookings do need to be made, she said.

Gym instructor Matt Roxburgh, who works at the EA Networks Centre leads the classes, and he is qualified in working with people with dementia and neurological conditions, Mackle said.

The focus of exercise therapy is to enhance the quality of clients’ lives and a client-centred approach is used to ensure the exercises are at a level that meets

While the classes are about improving physical strength and balance, they also create an important opportunity for clients to socialise, Mackle said.

Next month will also see monthly armchair travel classes resume and these have proven an ideal way for people who may

no longer be able to travel to still be able to experience seeing new places and sharing new experiences, she said.

But money hasn’t been spent, and might not be

The cost of building Ashburton’s new civic centre and library could take a $5 million hike as the impact of Covid-19 makes itself felt on the construction market.

In May 2019 the Ashburton District Council signed off on a $51.6 million budget for the project, but it has now opted to up that budget to $56.75 million to ensure a no surprises project for the community, says council chief executive Hamish Riach.

In making that decision, the council had taken a range of advice and as tenders came in for the project it became evident that increasing the budget to include a larger contingency fund was prudent, he said.

“There is a lot more uncertainty now, and if you think two years into the future as Covid continues to rage around the world what the impact could be.”

In signalling a potential price increase the council was being totally transparent with the community, but it was important to remember that the extra money had not been spent and might not be spent, Riach said.

While the all-up numbers might have increased, the im-

pact on rates was tempered by the $20 million the council received late last year as part of the government’s shovel-ready project scheme. The $5 million increase in the budget effectively meant that the $20 million saving became a $15 million saving, he said.

“We are looking at a bigger budget than was expected, but the government’s contribution has shielded our community from shouldering that cost.”

Mayor Neil Brown said the council would be closely guarding the contingency money and any drawdown would have to be well justified and a good case made.

“This is money that may not be spent, but we don’t want to get through the project and have to come back to the community to say we need more,” he said.

Once the tender price was locked in that would be the price for building the complex, but post Covid, there were too many

uncertainties in terms of material supplies costs, to start a major project without a reasonable contingency budget available, Brown said.

“We already had a contingency built into the budget, but we’ve agreed it is prudent to increase this and it’s important to tell the community this. We’re not hiding anything, it’s about being open and transparent.”

The $20 million that was given to the council as part of the government’s shovel-ready fund was recognition of the uncertainty around big projects such as the civic centre and library, he said.

“This was to make sure the project happened and it acknowledged there could be some issues around costs. It’s prudent for us to do this. Hopefully we won’t need any of it and we’ll be guarding it closely.”

The council is in negotiations with its preferred contractor, Naylor Love, for construction of

the complex. The project is anticipated to create 500 jobs.

The extra $5 million has been built into the council’s budget and councillors meet on Wednesday to wrap up discussions as they endeavour to reduce next year’s rate rise down from the projected 8.2 per cent increase.

When intense heat needs a response plan I

t’s bizarre we should be celebrating the hottest day of the year and probably the warmest January day on record.

Living through 40.2°C causes anxiety, discomfort and physical and emotional stress for many people.

Yet we strangely feel proud that our town sweltered through intense heat and caused some sort of stupid milestone.

It became a talking point, a water cooler conversation and a moment in time we can look back on.

But did we learn anything? Did we have an emergency medical kit at home? Was there enough shade for ourselves and our pets? Was the air-conditioning at the office good enough? Did the boss say it’s too hot to work, let’s make up time tomorrow? Did your sunscreen safeguard you against melanoma?

Were there enough cones on the road to tell you the tarseal was melting? Was the water pressure good enough to sprinkle the family with the hose? And so on.

Whether the recent temperature was random or a grim warning about climate change, it’ll happen again.

It’s not enough to talk about it.

While it’s fresh in your minds write a checklist about how prepared you were. Do we have emergency measures for not just fire, gales, earthquakes and floods, but heat as well?

If they’re in place, then celebrate the day and boast that Ashburton’s “hot” in every sense of the word.

If not, do something about it.

I vividly remember another day like Tuesday. I was a young TV journalist, working through the

When four-year-old Angus Laing decided to sell sunflower plants to raise some pocket money, he never imagined those tiny seedlings would turn into towering monsters a few months later. He planted dozens of seeds, nurtured them as they grew into seedlings and then set up a stall outside his family’s front gate.

Business was brisk and before long Angus was able to watch his pile of pocket money grow. Seedlings sold, he set about spending his pocket money, hoping his carefully nurtured seedlings were growing well in their new homes. What he didn’t realise was that the seeds he’d planted would yield some giant results. hottest day on record, 42.3 degrees in February 1973. I was sent to report on an out-of-control fire near Rangiora.

My camerawoman was the legendary Maggie Moth. She was originally Margaret Wilson but changed her name to Margaret Gypsy Moth because she liked the initials MGM. Margaret wore only one black dress and applied theatrical makeup on Monday which was chiselled off the following weekend.

It was important to be upwind by Friday.

But Margaret was fearless and, in the years to come, became one of the world’s great war correspondents. She was badly disfigured filming a global hot spot.

I digress. With the nor-wester fanning the flames, we sheltered behind a building. We couldn’t fully stand because of the intense heat and wind so I anchored myself against the building and held her waist while she pointed the camera around the corner.

We recorded some of the greatest footage of the heatwave and its devastation and I got as close to Margaret as anyone had ever been.

I learned something that day.

Not to be so stupid as to risk our lives in the face of a raging fire and to have a back-up evacuation plan in case things went wrong.

It’s led me to believe we also need one in case of heat.

In brief Lotto luck More Lotto luck has fallen the way of Mid Canterbury with two big-winning tickets in the past week. On Wednesday night a MyLotto player from Ashburton took home a sweet $43,801 by winning Lotto second division. They were joined by three others.

On Saturday night a ticket sold at New World Ashburton won $26,374 when it was one of nine winning second division tickets sold.

The double-luck comes after an incredible 12 months for the district where some of the best luck in the country has fallen.

Bridge upgrade A $250,000 upgrade is on the way for the Maronan Road Bridge, which goes over the Hinds River. The existing rails and concrete kerb will be removed and replaced with new ‘thrie-beam’ guard rail which, in addition to performing better in collisions, will increase the width of space available on the bridge. The upgrade is expected to take one month to complete and will involve stop/go traffic management.

The bridge will remain open to traffic throughout the work, however drivers should expect delays.

Travel ban extended Australia has extended its travel bubble suspension with New Zealand for another 72 hours. It will now be in place until Sunday. It means mandatory hotel quarantine will be imposed on New Zealanders travelling to Australia for an extra three days, according to the ABC. Locals chip in at Bike Park

Helping hands were lent at some of the local mountain biking tracks as the areas received an urgent tidy up at the weekend.

Mountain Bike Ashburton front-footed a working bee on Saturday at the ACL Skills Park and MTB Loop sites with about 15 volunteers chipping in with weed-eating and maintenance.

The park on Dobson Street West had become overgrown during the Christmas

break and the Mt Ash downhill track had also copped some minor windfall and debris following high winds in the area last week.

A race scheduled for last Tuesday at the track was canned due to the high winds and track debris.

Club president James Reid said he was grateful for the support from the local community.

“We got everything done that we wanted to,” he said.

“Everything was done in a couple of hours.”

Weeding of greenery at the Skills Park was usually required once a year.

The club has also been advocating for the local riding community where Mid Canterbury mountain-biking leaders queried the Ashburton District Council during hearings last week on its revised cycling and walking strategy.

About a third of the 70 submissions made on the strategy have said the plan did not recognise the huge contribution made by Ashburton and Methven clubs to develop tracks in those areas that attracted thousands of users each year.

OUR VIEW

Holding the collective breath for the better

I

n the grand scheme of things, it’s not much more than a hole in the water. But to the many ratepayers that call this district home, news of a hike in the projected budget for the new Civic Centre and Library won’t have come as welcome news.

Yes, it’s contingency. And it will only be used if it absolute has to, on top of the already existing contingency funds sitting within the original budget.

But there’s a feeling that if you don’t go and take the step of signalling that intention unless there’s some degree of certainty that it will be called on.

The only silver-lining is that the $20 million cash injection from the government as part of the shovel-ready scheme 12 months ago has somewhat braced the bank account from the impact of it all including on the rates bill every time it arrives.

We probably should have expected it. These are turbulent times we are living in, remember.

Covid-19 is again a very real threat to the country and many business owners will be cautiously tuning in to the daily 1pm news briefings and holding their collective breath that the word lockdown isn’t mentioned during the broadcast.

But is it a valid reason to use to explain a rise in a projected budget?

Some would say no, it seems.

At least those I’ve spoken to in the last few days.

The threat of financial burden is again there if the country goes into some form of lockdown, but it’s not there until it’s there – if that makes sense.

The only real frustration is that it can be a little harder or a bit more of a wait to get hands on product. Financially, currently, it’s not costing any more to do things than it normally would, and in some sectors the increase in workloads is seeing good returns for some.

Let’s hope that despite this news, that there’s a positive outcome here and we can come in under budget and the contingency money set aside isn’t used.

T

his week’s column is a sit down read again.

Some of the content will shock you to your very core!

My ‘Talky Bit’ on the book of faces yesterday dragged in some comments that will blow the mind of any younger readers, while the more mature reader will probably shrug their shoulders and think, yep, I did that or something similar.

The topic was ‘What did we do as kids that would get our parents in trouble – or shamed on social media – today?’

I instantly thought of wandering or biking down to the Beach Road Dairy, under the age of 12, to purchase a packet of Pall Mall Filters for the old man. Imagine trying to do that today!

If that’s not bad enough, I was probably conned into the job with the reward of spending the change on lollies. Child exploitation right there!

On reflection it did have another positive, apart from the lollies, it meant purchasing MY first packet of ciggies, for consumption at Hooper’s Hut, was a

lot easier than it would be for an under 12-year-old today.

On reflection, that positive wasn’t that positive!

The ciggy run wasn’t exclusively for fathers either, I remember being sent to Allenton Dairy by a certain primary school principal for the same purpose.

Toni posted “Getting a smack on the ass in public when misbehaving”.

Insert shocked face emoji.

I can’t remember ever receiving a smacked butt in public, but I do remember plenty of squeezed hands.

Mother had a three-squeeze policy. If we received three hand squeezes during an outing that equated to a stripe or three across the aforementioned butt when we got home, or worse still when the old man got home

from work.

Those stripes arrived via a 40cm-long leather strap.

I don’t remember every occasion I received some stripes, but I have no doubt they were justified, like the occasion we thought it would be good to help mother with the washing and strip our beds.

He had just had his hip replaced (and was clearly a bit grumpy) and while doing some gardening, was on the end of a drenching from three little ‘bath plugs’ on the end of the garden hose.

His vege garden was massive and took up most of the backyard. It was surrounded by a

The brains behind the venture indoors, Greg, rolled from side-to-side under the bed so GP couldn’t get hold of him. He was eventually captured though, and probably received a more forceful meeting with the dog lead because of his antics under the bed.

Unbelievably he followed up the belts with “Didn’t hurt”. GP followed that with two more belts that DID hurt.

It’s moments like these that forged a bond between my brothers and I and gave us something to talk about, probably sitting in the car, outside the races, with a bottle of raspberry and a packet of salt and vinegar chips.

■■ While chicken breasts are cooking, dice the remaining chicken tenderloins and add a small handful of chopped sage, diced onion and minced garlic. Cook in a hot oiled pan.

■■ Boil the potato in salted water until soft.

Strain and press through a fine sieve, before folding through the cooked chicken mixture with lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper and let cool.

■■ Once the mixture has cooled roll into 40g

balls and coat each ball in flour, egg and panko crumbs.

■■ Heat vegetable oil to 180°C in a heavy bottomed pan. Use enough oil to cover the croquettes while deep frying. Cook until golden. If preferred, you can cook on a medium heat in a lightly oiled frypan – watching carefully to ensure that the croquettes are cooked through without catching or burning.

■■ Remove chicken breasts from oven and place on a cooling rack. Cover with tin foil.

■■ Add baby spinach leaves to a hot pan with butter and olive oil and season, then sauté until just cooked.

new series of sports cars is confirmed, with prototype production of the Lotus Type 131 to commence this year from a worldclass manufacturing facility in Hethel, Norfolk.

The new manufacturing investment is part of Lotus’ Vision80 strategy, which will also see the relocation of two Lotus sub-assembly facilities into one efficient central operation in Norwich city to support higher volumes.

To acknowledge the forthcoming family of performance cars, Lotus has released an image that hints at the new generation of products that will follow Elise, Exige and Evora, which have entered their final year of production in 2021.

A full programme of activities is planned to celebrate the current range of three sports cars, starting with the elder, the iconic Lotus Elise.

The Lotus Elise was unveiled

in 1995, revolutionising the low volume sports car industry with its pioneering use of extruded and bonded aluminium, hightech composites and lightweight knowhow.

Using the technology pioneered in the Elise, the Exige, launched in 2000, quickly became the epitome of the ‘race car for the road’.

The Exige demonstrated a rare ability to give the driver an involving yet accessible experience on the road, while still managing to lap the most demanding tracks of the world quickly, with the safety and progressiveness expected of a Lotus.

The Evora, unveiled in 2008, returned Lotus to the lucrative super-sports car sector as an award-winning and versatile road car that was more driver-focused than its peers.

In motorsport, the Evora was successful too, winning national GT championships around the world and gaining a podium at Le Mans.

otor Industry Association stats for the year ended December 31 2020 show new vehicle registrations were down by 35,081 vehicles, or 23 per cent less than the previous year.

However the sales of new hybrids were up by 2789 for a total of 8664, while new pure electric vehicles sold were 1519 – 338 fewer than 2019.

Then given the popularity and noticeability of the latest new utes, and with Ford’s Ranger (7975) being the top selling vehicle in 2020, you may well be forgiven for thinking those utes will have claimed the biggest market share.

But no, for that definitely belongs to the SVU classes!

So its timely to look at a two of Subaru’s Foresters, the $47,490 petrol X-Sport and its hybrid e-Boxer mate, which in Premium spec costs $54,990 (plus ORCs).

The three other models in the range are the $42,490 petrol Sport, $47,490 Sport e-Boxer hybrid and $49,990 petrol Premium.

All have the essential Subaru DNA, including constant all-wheel-drive, a 220mm ground clearance and selectable off-road X-Mode to ensure they are very capable cross-country SUVs. With Bernard E in the navigator’s seat, we have been mapping out the rally route for a “Hinterland” classic motor-cycle rally to be based in Mt Somers.

During these expeditions, perhaps not unsurprisingly we have at times become side-tracked and then ended up doing Subaru-like things by exploring some roads and tracks we had not previously driven.

Decent ground clearance, approach/departure angles and X-Mode technology meant there was no trepidation about our venturing off-road.

Looks-wise, this X Sport distinguishes itself from its siblings with orange accents both inside and out.

It also gets black 18” alloy wheels (dusty as pictured) with 225/60 R18 Bridgestone Dueller tyres.

cious, well appointed, easy to access cabin has orange stitched, water repellent seat fabric. While we didn’t test the repelling ability of such, it proved to be very pleasant to sit upon.

As well the power adjustable, heated front seats proved definitely long distance comfortable!

There’s a large infotainment touchscreen with sat-nav, front, rear and left-hand side cameras, keyless entry plus the excellent camera based EyeSight system with its array of driver assist and safety features – adaptive cruise, pre-collision braking control, lane keep assist/departure warning and more.

Four larger adults can be very comfortably accommodated with very good views of what’s outside, indeed even above, through the large sunroof.

A powered tail-gate reveals 520 litre’s of luggage space. Therein we placed Angus the Boxer (dog), who very happily snoozed all of the time during last Sunday’s 240km rally route drive. Well, except when he awoke for a drink when a someone passing by kindly suggested he (Angus) was the vehicle’s best looking occupant!

That said, there’s a full size spare stowed below.

The X’s uprated 2.5-litre Boxer delivers 136kW with a suitably flat torque curve peaking at 239Nm at 4400rpm, so the performance is reassuringly linear with the smooth and responsive

seven-step Lineartronic CVT making optimum use of this.

At open road 100kmh cruise the engine sits at just 1500rpm, which reflects in its decently frugal fuel-wise nature, with that for our last Hinterland trip of 7.6l/100km being close to Subaru’s claimed overall 7.4L/100km.

On all the varied roads/tracks we drove, the long-travel, very absorbent suspension just soaked up bumps and pot-holes so well that we gave the ride comfort an excellent.

Add to this the benefits of the combination of the directional steering, the constant all-wheel-drive system together and the grip from the Bridgestones, that even without selecting the X mode there was excellent all-conditions handling and comfort.

Most of this is repeated in the slightly more conservatively dressed, leather-furnished Premium e-Boxer.

The main difference is its hybrid system, a combination of a 2-litre four cylinder Boxer engine producing 110kW and 196Nm of torque, connected with a 12.3kW/66Nm electric motor and 13.5kWh118V lithium-ion battery.

This battery lives below the luggage area floor in place of the spare wheel.

This very smooth and seamless hybrid system decides when either electric, petrol or a combination of both is needed.

The beauty of this system is that unless you are told so you’ll likely not be aware you are driving a mild hybrid – well, until you are in stop-go city traffic or coasting down hill with the EV light showing.

Accelerating away from standstill, the contribution of the electric motor/ battery means the e-Boxer is perhaps initially quicker away from the line than the 2.5-litre petrol models.

There’s no plugging it in, as the battery is recharged by both the regenerative braking system and the petrol engine when running.

So what are the driving and economy advantages of buying this hybrid rather than a straight petrol version?

There are of course fuel savings.

Subaru say these can be up to 19 per cent during lots of congested city driving and then 9 per better overall, with a stated figure for the latter of 6.7L/100km.

Ritchie eyes features Trainer Shaune Ritchie couldn’t wait to get his toes in the sand at Waitarere Beach as he went about putting the final touches on his four stable runners set to compete at the Wellington Cup meeting at Trentham tomorrow.

Ritchie is a firm believer in the benefits that beach work can provide for travelling horses in the days leading up to their assignments, having utilised the opportunities presented at Ruakaka, Woodend Beach in Christchurch and for a number of years now, the pristine setting at Waitarere Beach south of Foxton.

“All of our horses that are going to Trentham galloped at home on Tuesday morning and headed down to the beach on Wednesday,” he said.

“We get a lot of good results when we give them some time in the water a few days before they race.

“They seem to love the change in environment, they relax and for the older horses it helps cool their joints.

“You can see when they have done some work, their veins are standing out which has the blood pumping and the red cells going, which is great for their circulation and the like without putting any strenuous pressure on them.”

Ritchie and training partner Colm Murray have two runners entered for the Gr.3 NZ Campus of Innovation & Sport Wellington Cup (3200m) tomorrow, with The Good Fight and Swords Drawn providing them with a strong hand in the race.

“The Good Fight was narrowly beaten in this same race last year, after being shuffled back at exactly the wrong time, and he has been a model of consistency

Shaune Ritchie over the past season,” he said.

“With the right run I think he can be very competitive and has gun jockey in Danielle Johnson aboard.

“I’m just not sure what the best distance is for Swords Drawn as he has won fresh-up at a mile, won with a big weight over 2200m and then was hitting the line well over 2400m at his last start.

“Whether he can run the two miles I just don’t know, but he is by Camelot so you would think he should. They are however, going to run into a pretty hot favourite (Waisake) with a gun trainer, so they have a tough task ahead of them.”

Ritchie will also tackle stakes company for the second time with Reliable Man filly Samina Bibi who will step out in the Gr.3 New Zealand Bloodstock Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) after suffering a setback during the running of the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) at her last start.

“She (Samina Bibi) won her first race very impressively after sitting three wide and then disappointed on the face of it in the Eulogy,” he said.

“She was seven wide into the straight and when I questioned Wiremu (Pinn) about the ride he said she had hung all the way around the home bend.

“She pulled up with a torn muscle in her hindquarters, so I would ignore that effort when assessing her for Saturday.

“I’ve always thought she was my New Zealand Oaks filly and that’s why she is running in the Desert Gold as it is an important lead-up race to get to the Oaks.”

Ritchie will also line-up last start winner Duneagle in a rating 74 1000m contest and is expecting a good performance on the roomy Trentham track.

With the hectic racing schedule over the Christmas period and the demands of the National Yearling Sale behind him, Ritchie is taking the opportunity to spend some quality time with his family.

“I haven’t had a lot of time with the kids over Christmas so they are coming with me for a couple of days which will be a fun time,” he said.

“We get down there, build a teepee and play a bit of soccer, which I win every time as I don’t like losing.

“The kids love it as there is a crackerjack fish and chip store down there as well.”

Siblings join forces

Family ties are prominent in local tennis, however one set of siblings are teaming up for the first time in a tournament tonight.

Ashleigh and Tyler Leonard are set to combine in the mixed doubles as Mid Canterbury Tennis’ longtime regional tourney gets under way this evening under lights.

Previously, Ashleigh (23) has paired up with father Pete Leonard when the Gala Cup rolls around. However this year Leonard senior is stepping aside to allow the younger breed to entertain on court.

“I kind of just kicked the old man out,” Ashleigh joked.

“We’ve been doing it for a while now but we decided last year that would be the end of it for me and dad and Tyler would take over.”

Tyler (17) is one of the region’s top-drawer juniors on the court, and will head in to tonight alongside his older sister as top seeds.

Although they had played in social competitions together previously, this was the first time they will join forces in a tournament setting.

“He’s a got a very solid serve and backhand and he reads the game really well,” Ashleigh said.

Connor and Jade Brosnahan will also be considered contenders at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

As far as the two Leonards go, pre-mediation around tonight was seen as unnecessary, with both knowing each other’s game well.

“We train a lot together so we know each other’s style, but we haven’t talked any game tactics or anything.”

Although having fun was important, it would not take much for competitive streaks to bubble to the surface, she said.

“While we’re still going to be having fun, it will still be a competitive time for us too.

“It’s a big event for us as a family.”

Now based in Christchurch, Ashleigh first tasted success in the mixed doubles a decade ago when she first won the title as a 13-year-old alongside Pete Leonard.

The victory would be the first of a three-peat for the father-daughter combination in the Gala Cup. It would make for a more memorable event this season if she was able to repeat the achievement with her younger brother.

“It would be pretty special for our family I say,” she said.

Play at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre gets under way at 6pm.

Heat firing on all cylinders Softball Association finalises officers and committee

A comprehensive performance from the Hampstead Heat at the weekend has signalled their credentials as they strive to go back-to-back in local softball.

The defending Mid Canterbury senior mixed champions proved far too good for the Panthers, winning Saturday’s clash at Argyle Park 12-2.

The Heat hold a four point lead in the senior mixed standings with the Fairfield Ragamuffins their closest challengers.

The Ragamuffins held on to second spot despite a 7-0 shutout against the Hampstead Phoenix.

It is all set up now for an all-Fairfield duel tomorrow, with both the Ragamuffins and the Ratbags holding second and third respectively on the ladder.

Arguably the game of the round, it is one of two club derbies, with the Phoenix facing the Heat.

The Ratbags held on for a 6-4 win over the Demons Rebels in the other senior mixed meeting at the weekend.

The third and final match tomorrow is the Demons up against the Panthers.

The ever-dependable Ashburton Swim Team have again returned home from competition clutching a number of medals.

The young team of 10 competed at the Canterbury West Coast Championships at Dunedin’s Moana Pool last week, with a total of eight medals racked up by the high-flying youngsters.

Hannah King and Lucy Reeve produced strong performances in the pool, with half-a-dozen medals between them.

King (15) secured gold in the

13 and over 200 metre breaststroke and silver in both the 400 metre individual medley and 1500 metre freestyle.

Reeve (14) meanwhile nabbed gold in the 13 and over 200 metre butterfly and bronze in both the 100 metre butterfly and 400 metre individual medley.

A couple of the boys also enjoyed stands on the podium during the

four-day meet. Mitchell Veix (15) clinched silver in the 13 and over 800 metre free while 13-year-old Liam Chalke secured bronze in the 13 and over 800 metre freestyle.

Young Archie notches epic 140 not out

He came in as a last minute ringin, however Archie Rooney left the field a hero in age grade rep cricket at the weekend.

The Methven youngster crunched a remarkable 140 not out for the Mid Canterbury Year 8 Development side on Sunday, as he single-handedly guided the team home in the Central South Island rep tournament in Geraldine.

Chasing 244 in their second match against South Canterbury, Rooney came in at number six in the nine-a-side matchup.

The tournament followed a “last man standing” format, where sides were able to bat on within their allotted 40 overs until all nine players had been dismissed.

The Mid Canterbury boys were highly unlikely winners at 114/8 before the 12-year-old hit a further 131 runs as a lone ranger to

shepherd the team home.

His unbeaten 140 came off 92 balls and included 21 fours.

“It was basically because of his innings,” coach Wayne McDowell said.

“The funny thing was we were short of batsmen.

“It was an amazing performance.”

McDowell added there had always been hints of potential from Rooney at club cricket, however this was the first instance he had seen of him going big.

“He would never have got a 50 before, let alone 140.

“Coaching against him in club stuff, he’s always been a kid that has had the most amazing shots, like technically, but he would play five great shots and then go out.

“Every shot he played was unbelievable.”

His team-mates also savoured the moment with him, running out onto the middle when he brought up the winning runs before forming a guard of honour as he walked off.

Top tips from ski hero

Some of the region’s budding water-skiers have received coaching from one of New Zealand’s top former pros.

Florida-based Kiwi Kyle Eade was at Lake Hood last week where he took several youngsters under his wing for a four-day ski school.

It served as both the first coaching programme at the lake for the year and optimal preparation for the Lake Hood Water Ski Club’s 3 Event Tournament at the weekend.

Several youngsters were making their first appearances in trick and jump tournaments.

Eade has been back in the motherland for the past two months where he had spent his post-quarantine time engaged in coaching stints at different spots around the country.

Originally from Auckland, the retired skier now runs the ski school SkiFluid in Polk City, Florida, however had been spending part of the Christmas and New Year period back in New Zealand.

Eade decided to extend his stay this time round due to the pandemic.

“Travel is a bit non-existent into Florida so my ski school in the States will be pretty quiet,” he said.

“I figured I’d spend a bit longer and bring the family down and have a bit of an extended stay.

“I used to do this when I was competing ... so it’s been good to get back and spend these six weeks around the country and see a lot of our younger skiers.”

Lake Hood was a regular stopoff for Eade during his competition heyday, however this was the first time he had been back in Mid Canterbury for more than a decade.

He said it was encouraging to come back and see the leaps that some of the local skiers had

made over recent years.

“It’s been really good, working with some skiers that I’d seen for a long time like George and Hugh (Donaldson).

“I’ve worked with them since they were very young and they’ve gone on to represent New Zealand and done really well.”

“And now we’re working with some of these new guys, there’s a lot of talent.

“I enjoy working with both the beginners and those at the top level, both of it’s rewarding.”

Eade is a former Xtreme World Cup Jump champion and 15-time New Zealand champion and was

consistently ranked among the top 6 skiers in the world during a 20-year professional career.

His career was cut short after he suffered serious spinal injuries and trauma around the chest after landing on the back of his neck back in 2010.

The 3 Event tourney suffered a blow on Saturday with high winds forcing an abandonment of the first day.

The weather improved for Sunday’s spectacle which featured some strong record-setting performances on the water.

Eade said he is set to return home to the US in a fortnight.

Green turns heads on the water

The weather may have put a line through competition on Saturday, but that did not prevent water-skiers from hitting their straps the next day at Lake Hood.

The Lake Hood Water Ski Club hosted its first 3 Event competition of the year at the weekend, where the event’s full field either knocked on the door of personal best territory or surpassed it.

It capped off a week where Kiwi waterskiing vet Kyle Eade touched down in Mid Canterbury to assist in preparations.

High winds caused the cancellation of competition on Saturday.

“It was a hard call postponing Saturday when we had Kyle here,” chief judge Janeen Donaldson said.

“The kids were all keen to show him some new PBs before he left Saturday evening.”

Improved conditions cleared the path for competition the next day, where Gavin Green shone in the SM4 Over 65 year age group slalom.

Although yet to be ratified by the New Zealand Tournament Water Ski Association, Green’s scores of 5 at 12m-52k and 2210 point tricks haul may have set new New Zealand records.

Leighton Hood also completed a strong day on the water, securing the

top scores in the slalom.

He completed both rounds on to the 13m line with two, then three bouys, alongside supreme efforts in jump flying (31m), followed by 31.9m in round 2.

The young debutants also showed promise during the day.

In the junior girls’ under-14 age group, three new jumpers all landed their first competition jumps.

Harriet Hill landed a 9m jump in the second round for her nationals qualification, while Genevieve and Katrina Wallis both achieved personal bests with 8.2m and 8.8m respectively.

The trio also scored personal bests with their first competition tricks, and in slalom the Wallis girls increased their pbs to 0 at 40 (Genevieve), and 4.5 at 40 (Katrina).

Hill had the top score with 3 at 43, while Stella Clyne increased her PB to 4 bouys at 37k ensuring qualifications for nationals.

In the junior boys, Jett and Quinn Jansen both skied strongly, adding tricks and jump qualifications for nationals to their PB returns.

Jett clinched the top juniors tricks score of 760 points while Quinn scored 560.

In the jump, Quinn landed the top juniors score of 14.4m with Jett close behind with 13.2m.

Quinn also increased his slalom to 3 at 55k.

RUGBY

A head injury has forced Blues veteran hooker and two-test All Black James Parsons to retire from all rugby.

Parsons,34, has played 115 games for the Auckland-based franchise and sits behind only Keven Mealaumu, Jerome Kaino and Tony Woodcock on the list of most capped players for the franchise.

He made his debut against the Highlanders in 2012 and play 106 matches for North Harbour.

Parsons made his international debut against Scotland at Murrayfield in 2014, and was recalled for a second test against Australia in Wellington two years later.

Parsons, said he’s retiring on medical advice, after being out of the game for several months due to a head injury.

“For me it’s not about sadness it’s about celebration.

“I’ve been very fortunate to represent my two home teams the Blues and North Harbour Rugby over a hundred times

Benji a Bunny?

Kiwi rugby league great Benji Marshall is in talks with South Sydney about playing one more year in the NRL. NRL.com is reporting that Marshall is set to be reunited with coach Wayne Bennett, whom he played for in Brisbane in 2017.

Should Marshall take the paddock this season he would become the 10th player of the NRL era to play past his 36th birthday, and the oldest in this year’s competition provided Cameron Smith does not play on.

Wests Tigers informed Marshall last September that he would not be offered a deal for this coming season.

Linking with South Sydney would result in Marshall turning out for his fourth NRL club after the Tigers (two stints), St George Illawarra and Brisbane across 18 seasons.

With 324 NRL appearances, he requires eight more games to move past Adam Blair as the most-capped New Zealander in the NRL’s premiership history.

TROPHY TIME AT TINWALD A busy day at Tinwald Golf Club on Saturday was capped with the dispensing of multiple trophies.

The summer season came to a close with the drawn partner combined stableford round with club leaders upping the ante on the course.

Although he was handing out the silverware once play had wrapped up, club president Cameron Miller was in good nick during the day alongside Pete Marshall.

The pair’s score of 76 was the best in the men’s category for the summer closer.

Next best were Ray Kirdy/Tetua Tuakeu and Jeff Naish/Michael Thomas, who all combined for 72.

Snow Pierce and June Bruhns’ combined for 70 to secure the spoils for in the mixed event followed by Brent Smith and Linda McClea (68) and Chris Hart and Kellie Kenton (66).

Neil Rayner, Struan Scott, Tetua Tuakeu and Gordon Rennie all walked away with nearest-to-pin accolades.

Moana Tekopua was another big winner during presentations, clinching the 21+ and the CJ Trophy for women for the season.
