Ashburton people stood up, joined forces and said no to late night violence, resulting in a 17 per cent drop in disorder in the town’s central business area over the past 12 months.

Growing incidents of late night lawlessness on Ashburton streets saw the formation of a community group that aimed to find ways to clean up the streets and make them safer at night. And this week, Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield, told Ashburton District councillors that project was working and working well.

The concentrated focus on law and order had achieved the results the community wanted, a reduction in late night disorder, Mr Banfield said.

“This is not just the police, these results have been achieved by us all working together. The change isn’t the result of just one thing but the contribution all agencies are making. We’re doing things differently now in Ashburton,” he said.

With alcohol and young people there would always be issues but the community approach had significantly reduced the level of the problem, Mr Banfield said.

Work the council had done over the

summer to encourage people to keep themselves safe in the CBD and on the way home had helped to set the standard for the district, he said.

“The billboards, media coverage and social media have all assisted in reinforcing that we are taking a different approach to community safety now.”

The collaborative approach to reducing inner town violence came from a working group, called together by mayor Angus McKay.

4000 local properties yet to be signed off

St John warns of price hikes or no-shows

More than 4000 property owners around the Ashburton District have buildings that could be at risk of a rejected insurance claim.

Those properties have not had a code of compliance issued for building work that could have been carried out as long ago as 1992.

Many of those owners, however, may not be aware they are on the Ashburton District Council’s hit list for delayed inspections, says building services manager Michael Wong.

Building work carried out from January 1, 1992 that required a building consent also required a code of compliance when work was completed.

In many instances property owners were unaware that contractors had not had their work

signed off, Mr Wong said.

The lack of sign-off would show when a property was sold if a purchaser obtained a LIM. The missing sign-off would be tagged, but otherwise the first a property owner would know about the omission was a letter from the council, he said.

The council has contacted all owners of properties with building consents issued from 2007, but where no code of compliance had been issued, asking them to contact the council to arrange an inspection of the work so it could be signed off.

“From 2007 we still have 1196 still outstanding and they’ve all been contacted. If they don’t contact us we’ll eventually catch up with them, but it is the owner’s responsibility to apply.”

The council still has a number of outstanding compliance sign-

offs dating back to 2003 on its books.

“We’re now working our way backwards and we will eventually catch up with everyone. If people don’t have a LIM and they’re unsure, they can contact us and we’ll have a look for them,” Mr Wong said.

Since 2004, the Building Act has required work to be completed and a code of compliance issued within two years of a building consent being issued.

Many run over time and the council has written to 1507 people telling them they will be refused a code of compliance because work has not been completed within the required timeframe, he said.

Before January 1992 building consented work did not have to be signed off by a building inspector.

A Catherwood Avenue property owner has discovered that owning a property that did not have a code of compliance could be a costly exercise.

Blocked drains on the property, built in 1996, had caused headaches for the owner for several years but when they contacted the council asking for the problem to be fixed, the owners discovered contractors had not had the drainage work signed off.

Remedial work came with a $2500 price tag and the owner wanted the council to pay.

At Thursday’s council meeting councillors agreed that doing so would set the council up for a flood of payment claims for work that was not their responsibility.

They refused the request.

Property owners can obtain a LIM on their property for a $248 fee.

Oliver rehearsals in full swing Ashburton’s Variety Theatre had their first Oliver rehearsal in their new building on Wills Street yesterday afternoon.

The group is rehearsing three times a week for the play, which will be performed at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre in May.

New Zealand’s main ambulance service has warned it will need to hike charges or stop going to some emergencies.

In a letter to Government agencies, St John chief executive Peter Bradley says the service needs millions of dollars in funding and hundreds of new ambulance staff to end single-crewing.

“An increase in the part charge to $150 would realise around $5 million a year in extra income,” his letter said. Bradley told the Herald on Sunday the $150 was just one scenario.

A more likely option was $98 up from the $88 charged for any non-ACC ambulance call-outs.

The warning comes as St John goes to war with the Government over funding and staffing. The Weekend Herald has revealed the charity has told the Government it will stop sending ambulances to emergency call-outs within two years if they have to be single-crewed.

The issue has come under the spotlight after seriously unwell elderly South Otago woman, Marlene Dormer, died in a singlecrew ambulance. Her daughter believes Dormer would have survived had the paramedic been supported by an ambulance volunteer or firefighter.

St John - which receives about 70 per cent of its funding from the Health Ministry, Accident Compensation Corporation and district health boards - says it needs 350 extra staff costing $21m.

About 10 per cent of St John’s emergency call-outs are attended by a single-crewed vehicle and in rural areas it rises to 21 per cent.

First Union says single crewing is dangerous and a serious problem in rural areas. “Without that second pair of hands, both the paramedic and the patient are put at risk,” said union spokesman Neil Chapman.

Bid to improve education for Maori

Ashburton College is part of a New Zealand-wide approach to improve education for at-risk Maori students.

As part of this goal, the school has chosen their main focus for professional learning and development for staff this year to be Maori students at risk of not achieving or engaging.

Community crime effort gets results

Principal Grant McMillan said while the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has praised New Zealand’s education system, one group that is at risk of falling behind are Maori students.

“As a country that’s been one area where New Zealand is lacking.”

All schools are focusing in some way on this goal of raising

achievement for Maori and because everyone is doing it at the same time it should make a big difference to these particular students and lift educational New Zealand’s achievement as a whole, he said.

There is a risk of people seeing this as being racist or giving Maori special treatment, but schools are just trying to do better for a group that is not being served well

enough within the New Zealand education system, Mr McMillan said.

In the 1990s girls were a group that were falling behind and a massive move was made to change this. This is the same with Maori students now.

Maori are not doing badly, especially in Mid Canterbury, but they are still falling behind and improvements need to be made,

he said. “We’ve got a part to play.”

Ashburton College is focusing on this goal during their professional development for staff this year by implementing a number of strategies including developing a college culture that values tikanga and te reo Maori, supporting staff to encourage Maori student achievement and raising the profile of Maori student achievers at the college.

From P1 While the community group played a strong role in reducing violence, the long-standing Town Watch team continued to be an invaluable part of the whole package, Mr Banfield said.

“I see this group as vital. I know they’re having difficulty in recruiting members, but together we’re increasing how effective we can be.”

As CCTV cameras in the inner town increased in quality and quantity, Town Watch members would be able to monitor these and report to police on problems as they unfolded, he said.

“On some weekends they’re quiet, but on others we’re working very closely with them.”

Like all stations, Ashburton had limited resources and if a shift car was called out of the central area, Town Watch became the police’s eyes and ears on the ground, Mr Banfield said.

“I’d be very disappointed if they folded and I’ll do whatever I can to keep them going.”

Christchurch’s Paul Middleton took out the prize of heaviest salmon with his whooping 8.46kg fish during the Rakaia Salmon Fishing Competition at the weekend.

More than 600 people, young and old, entered the competition, which has been running for about 33 years.

Weather worries had organisers concerned that the river

would not be clear enough to allow fishing, but the event went off without a hitch.

Rakaia River Fishing Promotions president Ken Lee said the number of contestants was

slightly less than previous years because of the river conditions, but 31 salmon and 24 trout were caught.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” he said.

Student data helps project

Ashburton College student data is being used by the Tertiary Education Commission to help further develop the tertiary sector.

Student data is being used by the TEC for a tool which will help tertiary education providers analyse student performance and achievement prior to tertiary study.

The college was chosen to be a guinea pig in the development of the tool due to principal Grant McMillan being on the National Stakeholder Advisory Group,

which is assisting the TEC to develop a new ways of how they fund and incentivise the tertiary sector.

There are only two secondary principals in the group with everyone else being in the tertiary sector.

Mr McMillan said having a tool like this would mean tertiary education providers would know more about their students’ prior education and what they had already covered in school.

There is data available for secondary schools from primary schools about students but not

the same for the tertiary sector.

After viewing the data, Mr McMillan said that it was also incredibly useful for the college because it provided useful analysis on how to better prepare students for tertiary student and to measure the school’s performance.

Once developed other schools’ data would be used and a request has been made by Mr McMillan to allow secondary schools to access and use the data.

“It would be really useful for schools, we could actually see where our kids are going and

how well they do when they are getting there.”

He has also asked whether industry training data could be incorporated to allow schools to help students into the workforce.

The case for this has been put to the TEC and the Ministry of Education and while there is likely to be more development, Mr McMillan said he does not expect any visible national level rollout for a few years.

The National Stakeholder Advisory Group was formed in October/November last year and meets every few months.

A tractor has been destroyed after it caught fire on a property on Bridge Street at 9.30pm on Friday.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade spent 30 minutes dousing the flames. Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said he did not know the cause of the fire but the tractor was in use at the time. The occupant was uninjured.

Youth arrested A 16-year-old Ashburton male will be referred to Youth Aide for burglary after being found on the Ashburton Domain at 9pm on Saturday. A 22-year-old Ashburton woman recorded an excess breath alcohol level of 985mcg at 2.25am on Sunday.

Tree blamed for fatal

Bonus for charter schools The four remaining charter schools which opened in 2014 have all been paid a performance bonus despite three not meeting their targets.

Documents released to the Labour Party under the Official Information Act show that Education Minister Hekia Parata approved the payments – 1 per cent of the school’s budget – on advice from the Education Ministry and Charter School Authorisation Board.

The payments total around $60,000 and were made to Vanguard Military School, Terenga Paraoa, the Rise UP Academy and South Auckland Middle School.

The school at Whangaruru did not receive a payment, as it was closed down for performance reasons.

Labour education spokesman Chris Hipkins said only two out of four of the schools met their contracted targets, while another one had a compliance issue.

“Documents obtained by Labour show the minister was advised three had failed to meet all their obligations, but she gave them bonuses anyway,” he said.

Tractor fire

Two German teenagers were killed after a beech tree fell on their car as they were driving, an accident which police say was caused by “no fault” of theirs. They named the two 19-year-olds as Julia Mayer and Kathrin Schmitt. Police said they were travelling north on the Te Anau-Milford Highway near Cascade Creek in Fiordland about 4.30pm Friday when a beech tree fell and truck their car. “Investigating police would like to point out that that there was absolutely no fault on behalf of either Ms Mayer or Schmitt that contributed to this tragic accident.”

Pink ride raises cash for cancer More than $1000 was raised for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation during the Methven’s Mountain Gym “Ride to Survive” yesterday.

Gym assistant manager Sharon Kermode said the event was fantastic with more than 50 people entering for the four-hour event.

“We were quite overwhelmed by the community support.”

People could either ride or do body balance or other activities and enter in teams to make it easier. There was only one woman, Trudy Gordon, who spent the whole four hours riding, she said.

The idea came from gym instructor Rosie Robinson and lots of businesses in the community got behind it, Mrs Kermode said.

Tourist pinned by car while taking pic An overseas tourist driving on one of New Zealand’s most scenic roads was pinned between her car and a barrier after she got out to take a photo and forgot to put the handbrake on.

Emergency services were called to Glenorchy Road in Queenstown on Saturday when a 37-year-old female tourist got out of her car to take a photo, police confirmed.

However she failed to put the handbrake on properly and the car rolled towards her, pinning her between the vehicle and a guard rail, Senior Sergeant Gavin Briggs said.

Ambulance and two fire trucks attended the scene to free the woman and she was taken to Queenstown Lakes District Hospital with minor injuries to her lower legs, southern ambulance communications shift manager Bruce Chubb said.

The woman was travelling solo.

MediaWorks made the announcement yesterday, more than a week after Mauger was outed by his distinctive chin in a promo video. Old treasures polished for annual show

The antiques are being polished and memorabilia boxed up in preparation for the Rotary Club of Ashburton’s Antique and Collectables show.

The annual event is set to take place next weekend and already antique and vintage collectables dealer Raylene Stuart is preparing her displays.

Mrs Stuart is a passionate collector of many things, from books to dolls, cutlery, cake mixers and toy cars.

A collector for more than 20 years, her love for antiques continues to grow – so much so that not only does she have a house truck full of wares, she has also converted her garage to a makeshift show room.

For this year’s show, Mrs Stuart said she will have a variety of antiques on display including old favourites such as timeworn telephones and lanterns, china trios and restored clocks, and transistor radios.

There will also be a table dedicated to kids, filled with toys, dolls and teddy bears.

Mrs Stuart will be one of many stall holders setting up 40 displays and over 80 sales tables at the show this Saturday.

Last year more than 800 bargain hunters converged on the show and Mrs Stuart said it was hoped turnout would be as good this year.

The show will be held at the Sports Hall on Tancred Street on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Entry is $3, with children under 12 years free; refreshments will be available.

Felting lessons from Russia, with love By erin tasker

Five years ago Maria Shtrik introduced Russia to Ashford Handicrafts, and now she’s flown halfway around the world to see where it all began.

Ms Shtrik, the exclusive distributor for Ashford Handicrafts in Russia, has come to Ashburton all the way from Moscow for an eight-day visit which will include visiting the Ashford Woollen Mill in Milton where wool is dyed, carded, combed and gilled into silver, and meeting some of the farmers that supply the Ashford mill with wool.

Ashford Handicrafts director Elizabeth Ashford said it was exciting to have Ms Shtrik visiting, five years after she first discovered the Ashburton company’s products.

“She saw our products in Japan and went back to Russia and couldn’t find anyone with our products, so she went to England and got one of our spinning wheels in England and learnt how to use it and took it back to Russia,” Mrs Ashford said.

Ms Shtrik then began importing Ashfords’ spinning wheels and weaving looms to Russia five years ago, and opened a showroom, workshop and studio where she teaches and sells the Ashford range in Moscow late last year.

Russian Maria Shtrik is sharing craft ideas during her stay in New Zealand.

Mrs Ashford said felting was big in Russia, but not so much spinning and weaving, and it was felting where Ms Shtrik – a scientist, and talented craftswoman herself – produced her most beautiful work.

On Saturday, she hosted a workshop at Ashford Handicraft where she took participants

through the process of making a luxury felted scarf.

The workshop was just part of a full-on eight days for Ms Shtrik, with the focus on training, product development and marketing and sales planning, Mrs Ashford said.

“She’s got some product development ideas for her market, so

it’s two ways; she’s learning about our market, and contributing things from her market.”

Mrs Ashford said Ashford Handicrafts was now in more than 40 countries around the world.

Its main market was in America, but others – like Russia – were growing.

Learner driver clocked at 127km/h A learner driver carrying a passenger was driving more than double the posted speed limit in wet conditions when he was pulled over by police.

The Waikato Road Policing team posted a photo of the Subaru Impreza on its Facebook page, saying it was “unacceptable” after its driver broke the law twice on Saturday night.

The driver was travelling 127km/h in a 60km/h speed zone and told the police officer he “wanted to go faster”.

The Facebook post was accompanied by the tags #notinthemoodforboyracers #checkyourspeed #checkyourkids and urging people to take care after the Serious Crash unit attended six callouts in the past week.

A police officer who attended the job commented on the page that he was threatened by a mob of people who said he had “big balls” going there and hurled things at the patrol car.

The driver did not own the car, but earlier in the night another driver had been given a warning not to sell his vehicle in case it was confiscated by the courts.

Hip-hop queen to share journey

Hip-hop queen Billie Jordon is making her way to Ashburton to celebrate International Women’s Day. Founder of The Hip Operation Crew, a hop-hop dance group consisting of 22 members aged 68 to 96 years old, Ms Jordan used her own experience as a catalyst to improve the lives of the elderly.

Surviving an abusive childhood and facing repeated trauma in the devastating Christchurch earthquake, Ms Jordan used those experiences to help others.

She has successfully managed to get The Hip Operation Crew into the Guinness Book of World

Records as the oldest dance group in the world and they have performed at the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas.

A feature documentary about her mission to get the group to Las Vegas was made and distributed worldwide.

Now she is bringing her story to Ashburton, as the guest speaker at the Zonta Club of Ashburton’s annual International Women’s Day Breakfast on Saturday.

Organiser Viv Williams said the “must go to” event was a fabulous occasion and already there had been “a whole lot of interest”.

Tickets to the event, held at the Hotel Ashburton, are $35 and can be purchased from Frame Co.

Fire sparks warning for students Raucous couch-burning students in Dunedin have accidentally set a house on fire during their partying, narrowly avoiding tragedy, police say.

Officer were called to a large party on Castle Street over the weekend, where several hundred party-goers at two houses were spilling on to the road.

While containing the crowd, attending officers saw at the back of a different house, and found a the flames from a burning couch had spread to the home’s weatherboards. Police said the occupants were woken and evacuated, and the officers attempted to extinguish the flames before the fire service arrived to put the fire out.

It had begun to take hold within the exterior wall just as it was extinguished, police said. There was damage to the weatherboards.

Inspector Kelvin Lloyd said that it was very lucky that the fire did not cause more damage than it did: “This incident highlighted the dangers associated with the fire lighting issue in the student area,” he said.

Ballot fee wrong Two prestigious Auckland schools have been ordered by the Ministry of Education to stop asking parents to pay for the right to enter their children in out-of-zone ballots. Auckland Grammar School and Cornwall Park District School received strongly worded letters from the Ministry of Education after it got complaints from parents who were asked to fork out between $50 and $75 for the ballots. The ministry also issued an Auckland-wide “critical reminder” to principals, to remind them they are not allowed to charge for the ballots. In-demand schools hold ballots for the limited number of places they can offer to students who live outside their intake zone.

Caving rescue Cavers practising a search-andrescue exercise near Nelson had to deal with a real-life situation when a participant injured his leg while training. About 70 cavers and staff were taking part in a Deep Cave Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) on Takaka Hill near Motueka when one caver injured his leg while helping lift a stretcher with a make-believe patient at 1.46am yesterday. He was assisted to the cave’s entrance by other members of the cave rescue team and was flown to Nelson Hospital by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. This year the team was presented with a scenario involving two cavers who had not returned from an expedition in the Green Link and Swiss Maid cave system.

Loyal dog waits

Lions district honours departed More than 220 people from as far afield as Milton and Rakaia converged in Ashburton for a Lions District 202J convention in the weekend.

Festivities included an official opening ceremony, the AGM, a dine and dance and a remembrance service for deceased Lions members.

The convention was hosted by the Ashburton County Lions for the first time.

Events were based at the Ashburton College auditorium and Menorlue but the Splash of Colour dance was held at the Hotel Ashburton.

The loyal dog of a missing man keeps escaping from his home to wait for his owner in the spot he disappeared from. Kerry Morgan, 53, has not been seen since on Friday afternoon, when he went for a walk with his 4-year-old dog, Ataahua, by the Waikato River about 2pm. Ataahua and Mr Morgan’s shoes and hat were found on the river bank. The pair walked along the river path most days. A section of the river was searched using a boat but Mr Morgan has not yet been found.

His daughter, Lorraine Cook, said Ataahua, whom Mr Morgan has had since he was a puppy, kept escaping from the home to sit at the river.

Marius & Jean Cabout: It was a big decision to leave our home and downsize but we felt the time had come. We looked at different options but after visiting Lochlea our decision was made. We have had no regrets. Lochlea is a very friendly community and there is plenty to do to keep us occupied, but still have the freedom to do our own thing if we wish.

Geoff & Agnes Geering: We got to the stage we could no longer take care of our property on Conniston Drive. We saw the ads for Lochlea and made regular visits before choosing our site which enabled us to have a large garden. We enjoy life at Lochlea and for health reasons it was a blessing we made the decision when we did.

We were the fourth residents into the Resort and have been there since May 2014. Not once have we regretted our decision.

Joan Dephoff: Lochlea…. is a truly wonderful place to reside. Management is both helpful and caring and living here I feel very secure, most comfortable with absolute freedom to come or go anywhere as I please. Amenities are many and varied with residents perhaps being introduced to a new sport/activity whilst making new friends at the same time. Companionship is sustained through happy hours and pot luck meals in the lodge or entertaining in our own home making Lochlea an independent, safe and very happy place to live.

David & Nikki Copland: Barbara’s (Mrs C’s) time at Lochlea was short but in that time she embraced life, took part in, and did so much more than she would have had she stayed at her house on Beach Road. Mrs C’s last surviving months were fulfilled and she loved her new life. The care and support given to Mrs C from Tony, Sue and the residents at Lochlea was outstanding. The only regret we could have was that Mrs C didn’t get to enjoy her villa longer.

Stuart Lovett & Family: Stuart & Nola moved into their villa in January 2014. They made new friends while still enjoying visits from family and friends outside the Resort.

They were made to feel welcome and any requests or concerns were addressed promptly by Tony. They enjoyed many Friday get togethers and happy hours at the Lodge. Being able to live independently and knowing our parents were safe is a big plus. When Nola’s health deteriorated the ongoing support from staff and residents was much appreciated and a special service was held in the Lochlea Chapel for residents who were unable to attend Nola’s funeral. Stuart is adjusting to life on his own now. He goes to the gym every morning with his mates and plays petanque regularly each week. He has enjoyed organised trips in the van which is also available to take him to the supermarket now that he is unable to drive. The facilities and gardens are a credit to all and being able to use the Lodge to celebrate Stuart’s birthday was appreciated. Stuart feels very fortunate to be able to be part of the friendly, caring community at “Lochlea”.

Joint plan to lower crime pays dividends in CBD Ruby Harfield

he Ashburton community should be commended for its efforts in reducing late night disorder over the past 12 months.

A year ago, increasing incidents of crime in the central business area led the people of our district to take a stand.

Instead of sitting idly by grumbling and complaining about how poorly the town is treated on a Saturday night, community groups, authorities and local business joined forces.

The Staying Safe This Summer initiative was set up last November by a number of different organisations including the Ashburton District Council, police, a security company, Safer Ashburton, Maori Wardens, a taxi company and Ashburton Town Watch.

All these groups have worked together every Saturday night since, in high-vis vests, to make sure people get home safely and get home before they can cause trouble.

The campaign was set up as a direct response to incidents of violence, vandalism and disorder caused by intoxicated people last summer.

Billboards, media coverage and social media, as well as the Saturday night street patrols have worked wonders and Ashburton has seen a 17 per cent drop in disorder in the central business area since last summer.

This is a huge drop and thanks needs to be given to these groups in helping make our town a little bit safer each night.

A good thing about the campaign is that it doesn’t try to discourage people from drinking and having a good night in town, because such a blanket ban is unfair and a little too controlling.

But it has made people change their behaviour and has helped get drunk people off the streets.

In his address to council last week, Ashburton’s Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the project had been working well.

“This is not just police, these results have been achieved by us all working together.”

So next time you are out in town and want a drink, just know that there are people out there watching and keen to make sure you and our town are safe.

his last week was the first recess week of the year since Parliament began sitting again earlier in the month so I started it with a very full and varied diary.

On Monday I spent the day in Ashburton catching up with some constituents but also holding regular meetings with Ashburton District Mayor Angus McKay and with Grow Mid Canterbury. I also visited Allenton School and the new Stepping Stones Preschool at Braebrook.

On Tuesday I was on the plane early heading to Rotorua where I spent the day making visits to timber manufacturing businesses as Associate Minister for Primary Industries.

Later in the day I stepped in for my colleague Hon Nathan Guy and delivered a speech to a forestry biosecurity workshop organised by the Forest Owners’ Association.

On Wednesday I spent most of the day in Christchurch starting off with a forestry-related meeting at Canterbury University.

Following the meeting I enjoyed being part of the university’s O Week activities and talked to many young people keen to get involved in politics.

It was also great to see the numbers of new university students signing up with the Student Volunteer Army, started as you will remember as a response to the Canterbury earthquakes.

Thursday also proved a busy day. It started with my hosting a forum for seniors in Timaru.

I host such meetings regularly throughout the electorate and find them a great opportunity to hear from our older residents

About 30 people attended Thursday’s forum and the conversation was wide-ranging. They were concerned about tourists littering our countryside and about traffic on our state highways. They were also very keen to hear about the benefits and risks of New Zealand’s involvement with the Trans Pacific Partnership.

At midday I welcomed my Ministerial colleague Hon Steven Joyce to South Canterbury. Hon Joyce was here to open Fonterra’s new mozzarella plant at their Clandeboye site.

It was a strange feeling to be sitting in the marquee used for

the opening as it was situated on the old Clandeboye School playground where I had played as a child. My family’s farm was just along the road.

Along with Hon Joyce’s address at the opening, I also spoke as Food Safety Minister, congratulating Fonterra on the establishment of the plant which means 25 new jobs and the doubling of the company’s mozzarella production to 50,000 metric tonnes annually over two plants.

The Primary Growth Partnership (PGP), which I discussed in my last column, helped Fonterra commercialise their breakthrough technology for producing frozen mozzarella cheese through the “Transforming the

Dairy Value Chain” programme.

Later in the day Hon Joyce was also in attendance with me at the opening of Holcim’s new $50 million cement terminal at the Timaru port.

On Friday I hosted my colleague Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger in Timaru.

Barbara spoke at a luncheon and also made visits with me to Plunket-Karitane Centre and Falls Prevention and Green Prescription programmes.

Over the weekend I opened the Tasman Region Conference for New Zealand Young Farmers in Christchurch.

This week will also be a busy one with Parliament reconvening tomorrow.

Dozens killed in attacks A Taliban suicide bomber has blown himself up near the Afghan defence ministry in Kabul, causing heavy casualties just hours after an attack in the eastern province of Kunar killed 13 people and put prospects for new peace talks in doubt.

The weekend attack in Kabul, which occurred as defence ministry workers were leaving their offices, killed as many as 12 people and wounded eight, according to a ministry statement, although Kabul police said nine people had been killed and 13 wounded.

Witnesses at the scene, where a large plume of smoke spiralled into the sky, said they had seen a number of bodies on the ground.

The area was sealed off as police and army vehicles surrounded the blast site.

“I wanted to cross the bridge when I heard an explosion,” said a witness who gave his name as Zulgai. “I went to the area ... there were damaged cars and shattered windows everywhere.”

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The high-profile attack came as officials from Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States and China have been pressing for a resumption of the peace process interrupted last year between the Westernbacked government in Kabul and the Taliban.

But it remains unclear whether the Taliban, struggling to contain deep internal divisions, will take part in direct peace talks that the four-nation group hope will be held in Islamabad as early as next week.

In a statement issued after the attack in Kunar, President Ashraf Ghani said his government would not conduct peace talks with groups that killed innocent people and said security forces would step up the fight against terrorism.

Earlier, a suicide bomber killed a local militia commander and at least 12 others outside the governor’s compound in Asadabad, the provincial capital of Kunar, near the border with Pakistan.

Provincial Governor Wahidullah Kalimzai said the bomber rode up on a motorcycle to the entrance of the compound and blew himself up, wounding at least 40 people.

“Most of victims were civilians and children who were either passing by or playing in the park,” he said.

Man linked to Paris attack suspect jailed

Four stabbed at Ku Klux rally

Algerian authorities have jailed a man with dual Algerian and Belgian citizenship for links with the ringleader of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud.

The court in the Algerian city of Bejaia said 29-year-old Zahir Mehdaoui, a resident of Brussels, had been charged with belonging to a terrorist group active overseas.

The court provided no further details and it was not clear when Mehdaoui was arrested.

Islamist militants killed 130 people at a sports stadium, a string of cafes and a concert hall in and near Paris on November 13.

Abaaoud, a 28-year-old Belgian citizen, died when police laid siege to his hideout flat in Saint Denis, north of Paris, five days later.

Four people were stabbed and one of them critically wounded in a scuffle between members of the Ku Klux Klan and counterprotesters near a planned KKK rally in Anaheim, California.

Thirteen people were arrested following the melee on Saturday, including one Klan member who is accused of stabbing a counter-protester with a flagpole, said Anaheim Police Sergeant Daron Wyatt.

Several counter-protesters were taken into custody after stomping on a KKK member, Wyatt said.

Wyatt said the altercation took place as soon as several Klan members arrived at the Anaheim park for a planned rally.

“As soon as they got out of their vehicle, immediately they were attacked by counterprotesters and this caused a melee down the block,” he said.

Wyatt said four people were wounded in the ensuing confrontation.

The person most seriously wounded was stabbed with a flagpole that had an American eagle ornament at the top. The injured person was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Several witnesses said that a peaceful counter-protest had been under way for about three hours when the Klansmen arrived in a black SUV.

The vehicle pulled up and three men got out and began to unload signs when the group of about 50 counter-protesters approached them, yelling and throwing sticks, witnesses said.

The Klan members attempted to get back into the car but it sped off, leaving them behind, said Dion Garcia, 37.

He said the angry mob chased the Klansmen down the block, yelling: “Get out of here! You’re not welcome!”

“It was crazy,” Garcia said. “A lot of us were trying to break it up. This was not necessary, they should’ve just let the Klan protest. This is America, we have free speech.”

The Klan, founded after the abolition of slavery in the US South in the mid-19th century, has evolved in recent years into a collection of loosely affiliated or independent groups that share a political philosophy based on racial separation.

Most recently it made national headlines when a former KKK leader, David Duke, said he backed Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump rejected Duke’s support and on Friday a man wearing a shirt reading “KKK endorses Trump,” was ejected from a Trump campaign rally in Oklahoma.

R&B star and expectant father Bobby Brown is seeking treatment in rehab, according to a US report. The singer, who has had past issues with drink and drugs, is seeking help for an addiction, according to the New York Daily News. His lawyer denied reports suggesting he was in treatment for alcohol and cocaine use, but refused to give an answer when asked if Brown was in a facility to help him with a substance abuse problem.

He simply stated Brown would be performing in Charleston, South Carolina on March 4. The singer previously went into rehab in 2012 to treat alcohol abuse, but went to jail in 2013 on drink-driving charges. The news comes just days after it was confirmed he is going to be a father for the seventh time. His second wife Alicia Etheridge is pregnant with their third child.

Clean sweep eludes Tech

They may have won the Pritchard and Studholme Shields, but Tech will not feature in the Muirhead Rosebowl semi-finals next weekend after falling to a four wicket loss against Lauriston on Saturday.

In the weekend’s opposite dead-rubber fixture, Coldstream took a three-wicket win over Methven.

The result meant little, howev-

er, with both sides having already secured a semi-final berth along with Allenton, who had the bye.

The Stags got the better of Lauriston in the two sides’ last meeting in November, taking a 35run win, but a sharp dip in form meant the must-win match-up could have gone either way on Saturday.

Lauriston sent the home side in to bat after winning the toss and a solid effort from Harry Jones (66) to top-score and Hayden Sinclair

(57) pushed Tech on to 183 all out in 44.1 overs.

Lauriston’s Alex Hooper played the role of chief destroyer, taking four for 18 off his nine overs while Ryan Cockburn (three for 25 off six) also had a good outing with the ball.

Lauriston’s reply culminated in an exciting finish with the visitors needing five runs in the last over to surpass Tech’s total.

The required runs came from Hooper off the second ball, to

round off a fine individual day’s play, while Harry Jones was the best of the Tech bowlers with three for 19 off nine overs.

In the day’s other fixture, Methven batted first and were all out for 122 in the 29th over, before Coldstream chased down the target with three wickets to spare in the 31st over.

In Saturday’s semi-finals, Methven will play host to Lauriston and Coldstream will entertain Allenton.

Finn out of England side Fast bowler Liam Plunkett has replaced Steven Finn in England’s 15-man squad for next month’s World Twenty20 tournament in India. Finn was ruled out due to a calf strain, the England and Wales Cricket Board said yesterday. Eoin Morgan’s team leave for India on March 8 and will face Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies in the group stage.

“Some of the stuff was pretty derogatory and pretty vulgar and the upsetting thing was the fact that, I know if my two daughters were in the crowd I wouldn’t want them listening to that sort of stuff.”

As it happens, he’s right on that last bit.

These ears will vouch for that.

Let’s be clear; vulgarity among

New Zealand crowds isn’t particularly new. Abuse is nothing new to sports crowds, and it’s nothing Kiwis should be particularly proud of either.

But it’s just a bit rich for an Australian to get stuck into New Zealand crowds once he’d got home, and remembering the type of flak thrown at New Zealand players over the years on his side of the ditch.

Fielding in front of the old Bay 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was no picnic; ditto the Hill at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Maybe time for NZC to make a note to self for next summer.

Meanwhile, Wanaka skier Anna Smoothy has won the latest event on the Freeride World Qualifier Tour in Slovakia. Smoothy put together a smooth, fluid run to nab the win. Riders enjoy ‘fantastic’ day

The Ride the Rakaia race was enjoyed by all in fine weather on Saturday, with 185 riders registered to participate across the full course, the recreational ride and the mini-series.

Reon Park was the fastest of the 102km Ride the Rakaia course in a time of 2.34.15, narrowly edging out Thomas

Hubbard (2.34.16) in second and third placed Reon Nolan (2.36.12).

In the 22km – Ride the Bridge, Basil Audeau posted the fastest time of 00.41.50, ahead of Isabella Roulston (00:41:51) and Jessie Banks (00:41:53) in second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, Sharlotte Lucas and Nicholas Ross were the quickest in the 20-39 women’s

and men’s mini-series categories.

Race director John Moore said he was pleased with the event, despite participation levels being lower than last year.

“The day was fantastic.

“It’s a shame that our numbers were down, but that’s basically because we had another bike race going on in the district,” he said.

Moore said he and his fellow race organisers have received plenty of positive feedback.

“Everyone loved the race and the weather was fantastic,” he said.

“Everything went just like a charm.

“We had everyone over the bridge in eight minutes, the riders loved it, and the feedback has been great.”

Sometime this season Ali Lauitiiti could be running onto Mt Smart Stadium for an NRL game. He might play one match, maybe five, maybe more, but the fact that it is even on the cards is quite extraordinary.

The 36-year-old, who will be the oldest player in the competition, is the ultimate prodigal son, returning to his hometown club 15 years after he first lit up the competition. “It’s a bit unreal, unbelievable, really,” says Lauitiiti.

“If I stop and think about it, it’s hard to take in but I’m just grateful for the opportunity and want to contribute to this club.”

The 10th Mt Somers Mountainbike Race enjoyed fine weather on Saturday as the riders participated across three categories.

As usual, the race was competed over three individual events, depending on the skill

level and competitiveness of each rider.

Mike Smart was the fastest of the men in the 35km Hokonui Challenge Course in a time of 01.34.10.

Smart was followed home by Jacob Marx (01.34.51) across the finish line, while veteran rider David Plew (01.35.04)

rounded out the top three.

The ladies were also in impressive form, with the 40 to 49-year-old veterans leading from the front.

Kristine Marriott (01.53.41) and Jo Forbes (01.56.23) posted the quickest female times for the race, while Sharon Prutton (02.01.54), of the 50-plus mas-

ters category, placed third.

Liam Gorrie and (01.11.54) and Caitlin Titheridge (01.14.17) were the fastest male and female of the RDR Foothills race 30km event, while Brad Blundell (01:05:53) and Sue Marshall took top honours in the Avanti Ashburton Cycles Lowland Ride.

The future host of the NRL Nines will be decided by a bidding process, increasing the chance of Auckland losing the event beyond 2018.

While the NRL recognises the success of the tournament, and the work done in the past few years, there is no guarantee Auckland will be awarded the rights beyond the existing five-year contract.

Australian Rugby League chairman John Grant confirmed the two-day tournament had attracted the attention of cities across Australia. “We have interest from lots of places and why wouldn’t we? It has been fantastic,” Grant said.

Chiefs win ‘dogfight’

In a thumping, compelling contest that had a bit of everything, the Chiefs came away with a vital 27-21 win on the back of their greater sense of adventure and better all round attacking game.

This was a dogfight to the death and while the rugby wasn’t always slick, it never lacked for excitement.

It was engrossing – exactly the sort of rugby that Sanzar wants to see competition-wide but most likely never will because quality like this doesn’t stretch across the board.

It is beyond dispute that the New Zealand Conference is going to be different.

It is going to be bruising and intense - way tougher and more brutal than anything else.

Similar to the game at Eden Park between the Blues and Highlanders, the rugby in Christchurch was high impact, relentless, if not always polished and flowing.

Both sides were typically rusty for this time of year but they didn’t lack for passion or commitment.

No one bottled anything up and there were multiple flare-ups as a consequence.

Andy Ellis and Aaron Cruden began a feud early in the first half that never settled and any chance they got to niggle each other they took it.

The All Black selectors won’t mind seeing that level of feeling this early in proceedings and they would also have been encouraged to see a few familiar faces and some emerging talent put an early marker in the ground.

Cruden, despite his vendetta with Ellis, made a polished return where his footwork and acceleration were all on show and of such quality as to believe his serious knee injury from last year has robbed him of nothing.

Damian McKenzie was a dynamic and energetic presence

at fullback for the Chiefs and his willingness to run and back himself was impossible not to like.

And the Chiefs needed to rely on their ball players and decision-makers to do the damage because they couldn’t beat the Crusaders up front.

They couldn’t go over the top of them so they had to find ways to go round them.

The Crusaders scrum was a fearsome weapon.

Joe Moody obviously liked the rewards that came his way last year as a result of getting himself fit and clearly continued to train the house down after he returned from the World Cup.

With Owen Franks working just as hard on the other side of the scrum and a hefty boilerhouse of Sam Whitelock and Scott Barrett adding extra power, the Chiefs were in big trouble.

They couldn’t match the power or intensity and all of the Crusaders first half points came – one way or another – from scrum dominance.

It might be a bit old school to build a gameplan on scrum power, but it remains, even in this age of frenetic activity around the tackled ball, a valid means by which to intimidate, score points and win games.

It helped no end that Kieran Read was at No 8 and making plenty of good decisions to ensure the superiority was converted. He wasn’t originally going to be available for the opening two games but changed his mind after he felt remarkably sprightly at training.

Whatever he had been doing, certainly appeared to have been good for him as he got through 80 minutes with no signs of it being too much.

In the end, though, the Crusaders’ physical dominance wasn’t enough.

They didn’t have quite the same variation, awareness or adventure as the Chiefs.

And not did they have the same impact from their bench.

Stormers, Waratahs victorious in local derbies Australia’s New South Wales Waratahs and South Africa’s Stormers were victorious in onesided local derbies in the opening round of Super Rugby on Saturday.

Two of the new teams lost their opening games - as expected with Japan’s Sunwolves going down to the Johannesburg-based Lions 26-13 despite making a brave debut in Tokyo.

In Port Elizabeth, South Africa, the Southern Kings lost at home to the Sharks 43-8, struggling on their return after a two-season absence.

Also, the Melbourne-based Rebels claimed a rare away win, 2519, at the Perth-based Force in their all-Australian affair.

The long and mostly intense rivalry between the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland was no contest when the Waratahs rolled to a 3010 home win over the Reds.

The Waratahs scored four tries to one, racking up their fifth straight win over the Reds at Sydney Football Stadium.

First-half tries to captain and openside flanker Michael Hooper, winger Matt Carraro, and David Horwitz set up a 20-0 halftime lead.

In Cape Town, the Stormers broke clear of the Bulls after a tight first half when flyhalf Robert du Preez threw a dummy and scampered in for a 51st-minute try that rewarded the home team for its dominance in the opening stages of the second half.

The Stormers went on to win 33-9, with Du Preez’s opening try spurring them on.

Springboks second-rower Eben Etzebeth rampaged over near the posts, and replacement hooker Scarra Ntubeni was at the back of a maul near the end to give Robbie Fleck a winning start as head coach.

Fleck was promoted after Eddie Jones backed out of his contract with the Stormers to take over England’s national team.

Du Preez, whose father was a Springbok, collected 23 of the Stormers’ points.

On Super Rugby’s arrival in

Japan, the visiting Lions dominated the first half with tries by Robbie Coetzee and Courtnall Skosan to take a 12-6 lead at halftime over the Sunwolves. That became 19-6 early in the second half after a try by Jaco Kriel and

Shota Horie gave the capacity crowd a thrill when he scored the Sunwolves’ historic first try an hour in, but hopes of a comeback were ended when Lionel Mapoe went over for another score for the Lions six minutes later.

Mark Hammett, a former All Blacks hooker, was introduced as coach of the Sunwolves on December 21 and his team came together just over two weeks ago.

“You can always handle losing if you know the players gave everything,” Hammett said.

“We are very proud of our players given the short time that was involved in getting ready.”

While the Sunwolves showed some promise, fellow newcomers the Kings were outclassed at home by the Durban-based Sharks in their South African derby.

The Kings scored the first try through Chris Cloete, but that was a blip and the Sharks responded with six tries and finished with 35 unanswered points.

Mascot ‘creepy’ The Sunwolves might struggle on the field during their debut Super Rugby season, but they are making waves off the field after their mascot was unveiled. The mascot has been called terrifying and creepy by scores of people on social media.

To make matters even stranger, the mascot is not a full body costume like many others, instead being a werewolf mask with a human body.

The mascot was sideline to witness the Sunwolves’ first ever Super Rugby game - a 26-13 loss to the Lions.

Defence gets Wales home Wales has climbed to the top of the Six Nations table with a 19-10 victory as they handed new-look France their first defeat under coach Guy Noves. Les Bleus had a long spell of domination early in the second half but failed to make it count while the hosts proved highly efficient, prevailing with a George North try and four penalties and a conversion from Dan Biggar. France replied through Jules Plisson’s first-half penalty, a late try from captain Guilhem Guirado and Francois Trinh-Duc’s conversion.

Beale earns praise Kurtley Beale has garnered plenty of plaudits upon his return to five-eighth and for once it’s his defence that’s earning most praise.

Beale produced an assured and classy performance as he once again donned the NSW Waratahs No.10 jersey in which he started his Super Rugby career nine years ago. He skilfully mixed kicking, running and passing options in the Waratahs’ 30-10 opening round home win over the Reds, but it was a first-half try saving tackle on rampaging Reds’ winger Chris Feauai-Sautia which brought the crowd to their feet.

Pills cause of scare New medication to treat an injury is being investigated as the cause of a blackout suffered by former Wallabies wing James O’Connor, which led to false reports the 25-year-old had a heart attack. O’Connor recently switched medication to deal with the splenectomy he had 10 years ago following a school mishap, and doctors are now looking to see whether it caused an adverse reaction.

Tinwald and Methven will contest the Mid Canterbury A grade interclub final on March 12 following wins at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Saturday.

With no A grade semi-finals this year due to next weekend’s South Island Secondary Schools’ finals in Timaru, the top two on the points table after the last day of round robin play progressed straight through to the final.

Hampstead had a narrow lead on the ladder heading in to the weekend, but a loss to Tinwald and Methven’s victory over Fairton pushed them out of contention.

Tinwald and Methven finished on 21 points, while Hampstead were left behind on 19.

Methven were convincing against Fairton for a 5-1 win, as Flynn Ness and Koji Kawamata got the better of Sam Bubb and Phil Crozier 6-2, 6-4 in the number one doubles.

Tyler Leonard and Quinn Ritchie narrowly fell to MaryAnne Thyne and Mary-Anne Martin 6-3, 3-6, (6-10) to level proceedings.

In the singles, Ness continued a fine run of form to see off Gala Cup finalist Bubb 6-4, 4-6, (107), while Kawamata accounted for Crozier 6-2, 6-1 and Leonard downed Martin 6-3, 7-5 for an-

other Methven win.

In the tie’s opposite singles match, Ritchie took a default win over Thyne to round off a fine day’s play.

Hampstead’s 4-2 loss to Tinwald dashed their hopes of a place in the final for another year.

In the opening doubles matchup, Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan downed the father-daughter duo of Neil and Tessa McCann 4-6, 6-3, (1311), but Tinwald struck back through Matt Bubb and Mathieu Lucas.

Bubb and Lucas toppled Christal Brosnahan and Erin Connelly-Whyte 6-4, 6-4.

Tinwald were on form in the singles, winning three of the four matches.

Neil McCann dealt Connor Brosnahan a 6-1, 6-1 defeat and Tessa McCann downed Mitchell 6-2, 6-1 in convincing fashion.

Matt Bubb added another Tinwald win, beating Christal Brosnahan 6-2, 6-3, but ConnellyWhyte managed a consolation win over Lucas 2-6, 6-4, (10-6).

Meanwhile, Allenton took a dominant 6-0 win over Southern in the day’s dead-rubber match.

The final is set to offer up some thrilling matches as Flynn Ness looks to add the scalp of another Gala Cup champion, Neil McCann, to his collection.

Freezing temperatures concern Davis Cup team The New Zealand Davis Cup team isn’t expecting a warm welcome on and off the court when they travel to Seoul, South Korea for their Asia/Oceania Group 1 tie to be held this week.

Team captain Alistair Hunt was the first to arrive this weekend followed by players Finn Tearney, Artem Sitak, Michael Venus and Rubin Statham at various stages from around the world.

The tie will be held March 4-6 and the South Korean team has confirmed their strongest pos-

sible players. They have 19-yearold Hyeon Chung ranked at 66 in the world in singles followed by Duck Hee Lee at 230 along with Seong Chan Hong ranked 492 and Yong-Kyu Lim at 780.

And while the Korean team will be very tough at home, another issue of concern is the weather.

The tie is to be played outdoors at the Olympic Tennis Court in Seoul where the temperature at midday Thursday was 3°C and there are potential snow flurries overnight as the weather drops

down to -7°C, however some predicted long range highs for next week could see the top temperatures reach around 12°C. “It’s going to be strange to play outdoors in those temperatures.

“We’ll be speaking to the referee to make sure things are okay and also that there’s somewhere to practice indoors if the weather does go really bad before the tie starts,” Hunt says.

“They obviously have a tough team, but I believe if we play to our potential we can win, but

it will be important to be at our best.”

Hunt had played two Davis Cup ties himself in South Korea, one of which was indoors at the same venue in 2001.

Of special note in the New Zealand team is that Tearney will make his Davis Cup debut and Statham, if he takes the court will equal the most appearances for a Kiwi in Davis Cup history alongside New Zealand tennis legend Onny Parun who played in 25 Davis Cup ties.

The South Island Town and Country Championships hosted just shy of 400 swimmers at the EA Networks Centre on Saturday and yesterday.

Swim meet director Helen Tait estimated between 600 to 700 spectators and swimmers travelled to Ashburton from across the South Island, and the local contingent were in fine

form amongst some very strong competition.

Megan Binnie won gold medals in the 50m backstroke, 100m individual medley, 100m backstroke and as part of her 10-yearand-under 4x50m relay team.

Binnie also placed third in the 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle.

Guy Roadley took out a bronze in the 100 backstroke and finished in the top ten of five other

events, while Mia Roadley, Hannah King, Leigh Harrison and Victoria Bennie all managed personal best times.

Tait said the event was enjoyed by all, with a high level of competition on show.

“It was excellent, it just couldn’t have gone any better,” she said.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy it, although, with the weather and the amount of swimmers and

spectators it was very hot.”

Tait is confident that there will be more Swim Canterbury meets held at the EA Networks Centre following the success of the Town and Country Championships.

“You couldn’t ask for a better pool, the electronics and the staff, the meet was a great chance to show off the EA Networks Centre and it did just that,” she said.

Chris Waller says watching Winx is like “trying to get your first winner or first group 1” but jockey Hugh Bowman might have it right: “She’s the best I have had anything to do with.” Bowman rode So You Think twice and qualified his comment by adding: “You don’t like to say that when you have ridden one as good as him. But I have had more to do with her and she is definitely closer to by heart.” Winx won the Chipping Norton Stakes as expected but there was little that went on during the mile that would have been in the pre-race discussions. There was plenty of speed as Winx settled midfield and when she pulled out she had plenty to do but she did it with ease, like the special horse she is.

Ryder thinking about a return

By Andrew Alderson Jesse Ryder’s desire to play international cricket saw him approach senior Black Caps and management recently asking for another chance.

The probability of him representing New Zealand again appear minimal, with few willing to unlock the door without significant guarantees the 31-year-old’s behavioural problems - several of which have involved excessive alcohol consumption are a thing of the past.

The prospect of the all-rounder returning has been raised in the wake of Brendon McCullum’s retirement.

The Herald on Sunday understands he wanted to check if there was scope for a reprieve.

Ryder has had no publicised protocol transgressions since he and Doug Bracewell stayed out late before the first test against India two years ago.

Unlike Bracewell, Ryder has not played for the team since. He opted out of a New Zealand A tour in November 2014 for “personal reasons”.

The team-before-self culture instilled by coach Mike Hesson and McCullum means Ryder has become surplus to requirements.

The risk of bringing him back under a new captain – expected to be Kane Williamson in all formats if his appointment for the World T20 is a gauge – is deemed considerable.

New Zealand excelled in white-ball cricket this summer but, despite a 2-0 test series victory over Sri Lanka, there remains a sense of vulnerability around their redball game after losing four of five tests to Australia.

Even if Ryder excelled upon return, the decision would be deemed a failure should any off-field antics dilute the overall performances of others, or fragment team unity.

The Black Caps do not operate under any specified rules because, as one source put it, “there was a break-through moment where people suddenly realised rules were for kids’ teams”.

The expectation of self-discipline has sustained the team’s success in recent years.

before a New Zealand recall could be considered.

Partly that would be to prove a sustained level of fitness, while also preparing him for the increased scrutiny that comes with the transition into national colours.

Age also shapes as a factor to stymie Ryder’s return.

His ability at international level is proven, but McCullum’s retirement means the selectors must be tempted to persevere with younger players and reward domestic success.

Henry Nicholls (24) is the logical fit to earn a sustained opportunity to replace McCullum at No 5 in tests, and Central Districts’ George Worker (26) and Will Young (23), Northern Districts’ Bharat Popli (25), Canterbury’s Ken McClure (21) and Wellington’s Tom Blundell (25) have shown promise this season.

Tom Latham is expected to take over from McCullum as a one-day opener in the interim, with Worker on the periphery after sublime Ford Trophy form and fledgling international experience in Africa.

In T20s, Colin Munro replaced McCullum at No 3 and scored the second fastest T20I half-century in 14 balls to secure a 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka last month.
