Covid-19 vaccinations under way Border and managed isolation workers in Christchurch were the first people in the South Island to receive the Covid-19 vaccination this week.

New Zealand currently has agreements with four suppliers of the vaccine, Pfizer and BioNTech were the first to be rolled

out. The Ashburton Guardian hit the streets and asked the public if they will be getting the vaccine.

In central Ashburton one woman said that she “will get the vaccine myself, and my kids will get it too”.

Like her, a number of people

said yes without hesitation.

However, several people weren’t yet sure if they would get the vaccine yet, and some had not even thought about it yet.

The Ministry of Health is planning to roll-out vaccinations through a Covid-19 Immunisation Programme in what is New

Zealand’s largest immunisation roll-out ever.

Under phase one of its vaccination plan, the government is prioritising all border workers and their families.

It’s expected to take two to three weeks to vaccinate border workers including cleaners,

nurses, security staff, customs and border officials, airline staff, hotel workers and all their household contacts.

Healthcare, essential workers and those most at risk will follow in the second quarter of the year.

The vaccine will be free to everyone in NZ.

Nightclub to reopen under new name

The former Arcadia site on Tancred Street is set to reopen as a new nightclub under new management.

MS PVT Limited, has made application to Ashburton’s District Licensing Committee for an on licence at 78 Tancred Street Ashburton, for what will be known as Ultra Infinity Lounge.

Formerly operating as Arcadia, a liquor licensing panel refused to renew Paul Millichamp’s licence last year, resulting in the closure of the nightclub that he had operated since 2013, and ended his

14 years as a bar owner in Ashburton.

When Millichamp applied to renew his liquor licence last year, a police objection was lodged.

A hearing followed, the police and Millichamp put their cases forward, but the three-member district licensing team decided the case against renewal was too strong.

He chose not to appeal, his licence was cancelled at the end of November 30 and Arcadia’s doors were locked.

The doors may now be reopened if the new owner is succesful with its application.

The general nature of the business that MS PVT Limited has

listed in the application is as a nightclub.

The days on which and the hours during which alcohol is sold under the licence are proposed to be Monday to Sunday from 8am to 2am.

MS PVT Limited was only registered as a company on February 2.

The application may be inspected during ordinary office hours at the office of the Ashburton District Licensing Committee at 5 Baring Square West, Ashburton.

Any person who is entitled to object and who wishes to object to the grant of the application has until March 16 to file a notice in writing of the objection.

The former Arcadia nightclub is set for a revival under new management and a new name.

Businesses resigned to tough period

Frustration has begun to simmer for local business owners as extensive upgrades press on in Ashburton’s CBD. However retailers are putting on a brave face as they resign themselves to a difficult period of trading.

Paper Plus on East Street has suffered a business decline of about 40 per cent of late due to the upgrades in the area, which cut off a large portion of parking and foot traffic.

Owner Terry McNab was disgruntled about the impact on his business, comparing the situation to “another Covid” lockdown.

“Every day I get more frustrated with the whole thing,” he said.

“I get sick of the way they dig a hole then put a fence around it then bugger off.”

He also expressed concerns around the coming months once work begins on the shop side of the street.

“If this is what it’s like now, then it’s going to be terrible.”

The Ashburton District Council have defended the situation, advising pedestrian access remained available to all businesses.

“People may not be able to currently find a car park in the vicinity of the shop or business they wish to visit, the contractors ensure that pedestrian access is available,” infrastructure services manager Neil McCann said.

Council has been providing updates every fortnight to local businesses on the work.

McCann said accessways and pedestrian crossing closures would continue to change frequently as work progressed.

“This makes it very difficult to set in stone exactly where people can walk/drive/park on a daily basis.

He confirmed the pedestrian railway crossing adjacent to the public toilets would remain closed for the next few weeks.

Life Pharmacy co-owner Rachel Eaton was more concerned around the difficulties facing customers.

“It is a bit tricky for our customers who may have conditions,” she said.

“We just have to deal with it.”

She also said one of her customers had suffered a fall which had resulted in an admission to hospital.

Council confirmed all key areas for pedestrians were cordoned off when asked about the amount of signage in the CBD. “People need to be observant when they are walking around the CBD where the work is being undertaken and make use of pedestrian crossings where they are provided,” McCann said.

He added that council staff had observed several pedestrians opening gates or stepping over cones and crossing closed sections of road.

“The gates and cordons are there to protect both the contractors and members of the public.”

Retro Kitchen, which only opened its Burnett Street doors in November, was forced to close for two days during the week due to the road works in front of its premises.

Owner Kelly Macvey did not rule out further closures over the coming weeks.

Although he expected things to be hard, it was part and parcel of the upgrades.

Health2000 owner Bob McDonald was also pragmatic about activity near the Ashburton Arcade, where he believed council and contractors were doing their best to mitigate disruption.

“You can’t make an omelette

without breaking some eggs,” he said.

“I think they’re doing as good as they can in what is a tough situation.”

He said they would be pushing their free delivery service as a means to manage disruption to their store.

Dance-off for David

Waiting is the hardest part.

For the Dirks family of Methven, waiting could best be described as gut-wrenching.

But it is the brutal reality when you are the parents of a 12-yearold boy who remains on a waiting list for a full heart transplant.

Mount Hutt College pupil David Dirks was born with a rare cardiac condition which has significantly debilitated his quality of life.

A full day of school is a slog and the family cannot travel too far from the district due to the prospect of receiving the call they’re waiting for from Auckland Starship Hospital.

The youngster has already had four open heart surgeries, experiences which had sent the family to hell and back.

David’s mum Becky Dirks has also been forced to give up work due to being “on-call” indefinitely while dad Sean works long hours as a truck driver.

The financial ramifications of a stint at Auckland Starship for the family where recovery could be months was expected to be signficant.

She said simple activities that most took for granted were exhausting for David at present.

“It’s life on hold, but while we’re holding we’re also watching him decline,” she said.

“We know he’s getting worse.

“He’s in critical heart failure.”

While the family’s life has effectively come to a halt, it has not stopped the Methven community making moves for the brave

Safer Mid Canterbury is now a $2 million business with social agency contracts that touch hundreds of lives every year.

The organisation receives about $270,000 in funding from the Ashburton District Council, but for every dollar of council money it receives, it secures another $8 from other funding sources.

David Dirks is hoping for some star-making performances ahead of tomorrow’s Dance for David showcase in Methven.

Dubliner co-owner Karen Manning has organised the event Dance for David tomorrow night which centres around South Africa’s Jerusalema dance challenge which went viral last year.

“I was just thinking about them as a family having to go through whatever they have to go through in the future, I think they can

do without the financial worry,” Manning said.

A dozen dance troupes from the Methven community are taking part in the challenges which will be filmed and edited together.

The night will be capped off with one final dance-off with all the groups involved in what could be quite the spectacle along Methven’s Main Road.

Dozens of pupils at Mount Hutt College and staff members of the Methven Medical Centre were to have their challenges filmed the following day.

Further participants who were not already in groups were able to take part earlier in the evening.

A Givealittle page had been set up for the event with just under $1200 raised as of yesterday.

Safer Mid Canterbury goes from strength to strength

Sixteen years ago he took over a small team of people running a small number of programmes.

The organisation had grown eight-fold over that time with 28 staff now reporting to him.

For the first time in many years, Safer Mid Canterbury has been through a structural review that has resulted in the organisation now being divided into three teams – refugee and migrant services, child and youth services and family and community services, each with their own team leader.

The past six months had also seen change in the demand on services, Clifford told Ashbur-

ton District councillors in his six-monthly report on the service.

“Covid obviously had an effect and we’ve seen a higher level of referrals, particularly in the migrant sector where we’ve had 19 referrals over the past six months with familiies that were struggling quite substantially.”

There was also an increase in referrals for young people who were suffering stress and anxiety, he said.

“On a positive note, though, since Covid we’ve had a reduction in the number of referrals for youth and adult offending at a lower level.”

There was a suggestion that during lockdown, those likely to offend had been unable to and

had got out of the habit, he said.

Covid had also been responsible for the establishment of a new programme around employment, Clifford said.

“The idea is to support people back into employment, people who may have been in a job for a long time, who don’t have a CV and they find they need to look for work.”

The services offered by Safer Mid Canterbury continued to grow and change according to changing needs in society, Clifford said.

“The key point is that we respond to need and we’ve had a lot of trauma such as earthquakes, Mosque shootings and Covid in our community that has led to more need.”

Environment Canterbury councillors adopted the draft Long-Term Plan 2021-31 for public consultation on Thursday. In the draft it is proposing increasing rates by either 24.5 per cent or 18 per cent across the region, to cover the fallout of the Government’s new freshwater regulations. ECan’s first option covers work costing $246.54 million – an increase of around $46m from this year. Ratepayers would fund $143m of that which equates to an average increase of $136 per property. The second option is for work costing $240.19m – around $40m more than this year. That works out to hit ratepayers to the tune of $135m, with government grants and council user-pays charges covering the rest, which works out to be an average increase of $110 per property. Consultation opens on March 8.

Fire calls Multiple appliances were called to a paddock fire near Pendarves on Wednesday. Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) confirmed a total of seven vehicles from Ashburton, Pendarves and Rakaia were called to the blaze at 2.40pm. The blaze which occurred on a stubble paddock was extinguished within an hour, a Fenz spokesman said. Fenz also fielded a report of some “electrical burning” in Ashburton around 3.45pm that same day. It was later confirmed as a false alarm.

Man shot three times A man who died on Thursday night after a shooting incident in Papatoetoe was shot by police three times. He was TangaruNoere Turia, 34. Police were called to a house in Avis Avenue about 5.40pm on Thursday after a shot was fired through the window of a neighbouring home. Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said police had made attempts to negotiate with Turia for a number of hours in order resolve the matter safely.

Five Star feedlot faces clean-up

Mid Canterbury’s Five Star Beef feedlot is to be shut down, at least in part, to be decontaminated of cattle disease mycoplasma bovis.

Five Star Beef, on the coast at Wakanui, is New Zealand’s biggest feedlot, carrying about 14,000 cattle at any one time and consented to have up to 19,000 cattle.

Clearing it of the disease will be a massive task.

Ministry for Primary Industries chief science adviser Dr John Roche said it was aware of the feedlot’s importance to the Mid Canterbury community and economy.

“We want to achieve the aim of disease eradication, but do it in the best interests of the Mid Canterbury community.”

The programme first needs to get to the end of active cases on other farms (which may at the earliest be at the end of this year). Only after that could Five Star be depopulated and a plan still needs to be developed. As yet there is no timeframe set on that work.

MPI needed to be sure that M. bovis had been removed from the region and nation before tackling the feedlot.

This was because the feedlot sourced thousands of cattle from hundreds of farms each year, putting it at risk of being reinfected.

The depopulation and decontamination process at Five Star Beef may start later this year, Roche said.

“We first need to get through next spring to check that we have mopped up all infection.”

Roche will work with international experts in M. bovis as well as large-scale feedlots in North America to develop options on how to depopulate Five Star Beef.

Investigations would include the possibility of decontaminating a proportion of the site, while some of it remained operational, averting the need for a complete shut-down.

“Until I do a review I have no idea how it will be done, but I have every confidence we will come up with workable plans,” Roche said.

Owned by Japanese company Anzco, the Five Star Beef feedlot has been operating for about 30 years.

Five Star Beef is a key part of the local economy with 300 jobs associated with the operation. It annually takes up to 40,000 head of cattle from farms all over the country, and 50,000 tonnes of grain and 18,000 tonnes of maize from local suppliers.

This accounts for 90 per cent of South Island maize and 8 per cent of New Zealand’s grain production.

Anzco general manager systems and supply Grant Bunting said Five Star Beef was working closely with and would continue to take direction from MPI to manage M. bovis on its operation.

PHOTO SUPPLIED ly thought out and planned, and all indications are that this will be a long process and something we are not prepared to speculate on,” Bunting said.

Roche said there had been rumblings in Mid Canterbury about Five Star Beef being the source of the spring cluster, when four dairy farms and three other dairy grazing properties in the district were confirmed with M. bovis.

“That would be an extremely unlikely situation. The risk of that is very, very low.

“We work closely with Five Star Beef and have been impressed with their biosecurity controls and are confident they are not at risk of transmitting infection off the property. They have excellent boundary fences and a large buffer strip between them and contiguous properties.”

Stock only leave the property to be slaughtered. The disease is harmless to humans and is not transmitted through meat or milk.

Cattle are raised on grass on farms for about 18 months, before being taken to Five Star Beef for finishing on grain for an average of 120 days.

Less than two per cent of New Zealand’s total beef production is grain-finished, providing a premium niche option for some consumers.

The main markets for Five Star Beef products are Asia (predominantly Japan) with a growing interest in the Middle East.

Roche said Five Star Beef had provided an incredibly useful beef surveillance tool.

“Five Star Beef has allowed us to blood sample animals coming on to the feedlot which allows us to trace back to beef farms. It has been a very effective beef surveillance strategy.

“With dairy we have bulk tank milk screening which is very effective, but with

beef surveillance it is more difficult as we are not getting a product off beef farms every day.”

M. bovis was confirmed at Five Star Beef in August 2018, but backward tracing showed it was likely first infected in mid2017.

Event centre running at full steam

The Ashburton Trust Event Centre is looking forward to a better year in 2021 after Covid-19 closed the theatre down for months on end.

Unlike 2020, general manager, Roger Farr, predicts a great year both with touring events and local productions.

First up is Soldier’s Tale, written

by Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky in 1918. It’s presented by dancers from the Royal New Zealand Ballet with an ensemble of musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO).

Soldier’s Tale will be staged at the Event Centre on Sunday, March 7, followed by the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Tutus On Tour on Thursday, March 11.

“The ballet is popular with all ages especially youngsters who come dressed in their own tutus,” Roger Farr says. “To celebrate the occasion, we’re holding a competition for the best dressed member of the public in tutus.”

Roger says it isn’t limited to children. If adults want to come along in ballet costume, they’re more than welcome.

Two other shows are booked for March. They are the Irish dance production Celtica on March 26 and Christchurch hypnotist, Brian Gee, who’s presenting a fundraiser for the Ashburton Aviation Museum, the following night.

In all, the Event Centre has 15

confirming bookings for 2021 with others “being negotiated and looking promising”. Among the touring shows is Laugh Fest 2021, The Sweet Caroline Tour, Queen: It’s A Kinda Magic, the World of Musicals, Friends! The Musical Parody and The New Zealand String Quartet, 4 Suits and a Soprano.

Locally there’s ANZAC – Stories and songs from the Front Line written by Jenny Beach and Sally Farr on April 24 and Variety Theatre, Ashburton, presents It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll Baby, with father and daughter, Gavin and Sarah Templeton, as director and musical director, from May 21 to 29.

Roger’s delighted that shows, which cancelled last year, are returning, which he says vindicates the attraction of the event centre and local patrons.

While there’s a thirst for quality acts, he’s appealing to Mid Canterbury people to attend the productions.

“The success of 2021 is very much dependent on support from the local community,” he says.

“Touring groups suffered in 2020 and need bums on seats to maintain their viability.”

Roger Farr assures patrons the event centre will comply with the strictest of hygiene standards required of them. The venue will be cleaned daily with hand sanitisers available to all people attending the theatre.

“Our message is we’re back and running at full steam,” he says.

Grace at a new place

Pastor’s Brendan and Amy Abernethy’s home is no longer big enough for them.

Over the last year, the Abernethys have been opening up their home on Sundays to people in the community.

The couple have been holding gatherings of interest for the Ashburton Campus of the Grace Vineyard Church, a place for people to connect to God, each other and their community.

Grace Vineyard has been established in Christchurch for many years, with already five campuses throughout the city.

On Sundays, two and a half thousand people attend Grace Vineyard Church regularly.

The church had people coming week after week to the Abernethys home, 30 adults and 20 children gathering regularly with a few more each week.

“We have outgrown this space which is amazing. We are looking to expand so more people can join our growing church family,” Brendan said The decision to move the gathering from their family house to the Ashburton College auditorium was so they can launch to the wider community, Brendan said.

“We feel honoured to use such a great venue,” Brendan said. Renting the venue is valuable to them as a group as they

are only based there three to four hours a week. The rest of their time can be spent out in the community, he said.

“Our desire is to provide a safe, inviting family environment. Where people can come explore their faith, but also find community relationships,” Brendan said.

Grace Vineyard is designed to be a modern church, established as a pop-up model.

Everything needed for their church service fits into a trailer, making the auditorium a great space for the group.

Grace Vineyard is looking to complement all the churches in the area, Brendan said.

“We are inviting anyone who does not have a church home to join us,” Brendan said.

Grace Vineyard see Sundays as a family affair, Brendan said, there’s a separate children’s service where they can watch videos, do crafts and have fun while learning about God. Tea, coffee and a sausage sizzle will be an essential after Grace Vineyards service, Brenden said.

A big part of church life is friendship.

“Our heart is not just about the service it is also about coming together as part of a large loving family,” Brendan said.

Grace Vineyard will be holding its first congregation tomorrow, February 28 at 10am at their new space in the Ashburton College auditorium.

What’s in a name?

Bernard Egan is a well known man around these parts. Through Tales From the Back Seat he endeavours to put a light-hearted spin on tales from yesteryear.

T

he words which follow came about because a television comedian jokingly said there are no canaries on the Canary Islands.

It’s a shame to spoil a good story but in fact it seems there are such little birds inhabiting the Canary Islands which, despite their title, were not in fact named after the said birds.

The name comes from the Latin word for dog, “canaria”.

Legend has it when some of the first Europeans arrived, they found large dogs on the island of Gran Canaria.

So there you have it the truth has got in the way of a good story.

And it places doubt on the comedian’s contention about the Virgin Islands and what he said there were none of there.

He reckons on the Virgin Islands there are – you guessed it – no canaries there either.

All this led to thoughts about place names and here’s one to ponder.

Mooselookmeguntic has 17 letters and five syllables, making it the longest town or city name (without hyphens or spaces) in the USA. Beware, those who say there is hell on earth aren’t wrong.

Hell is in Norway.

The town that is.

Believe it or not, the founders of this burg in southwestern Norway named it “Hell” after the Old Norse word “hellir”, which translates to “overhang” – not the

feeling you get from over eating – more likely a rock formation.

Although there is a suggestion the name was decided upon during a feast, involving drinks on the rocks.

Ironically Hell is one of the colder places in the world, it’s often frozen over for a third of the year.

Which sort of leads us to Middelfart Denmark which was a hub for whale hunters from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century.

Even though whaling has thankfully almost ended, Middelfarters reverted to their old habits during both of the world wars.

Their old habits of whaling that is!

We’re not sure if the name of their town is an indicator of other habits!

Or makes it a contender to share Chicago’s nickname The Windy City.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, is a small village in Wales which

calls itself by a name with possibly more letters than residents.

And we’re like 65.8 per cent (allowing for the margin of error) sure we didn’t spell it wrong.

After struggling and spluttering the spellcheck agrees.

And here’s an interesting fact – the township’s tourism folks own the longest valid internet domain name in the world.

If you want to know more add “org.uk” after their 63 characters and you’re on your way to learning more about Llanfairp-

wll-oh-forget-about-it.

Now, just in case you were worrying about Hell on earth, let us ease your troubled minds – there is also Heaven on earth.

Although it doesn’t bear the name it’s right here in the people and places surrounding us in this fabulous district we live in.

Something brought home for two motoring writers last Sunday when they met three readers – each of whom has a wonderful sense of humour – in Staveley.

The readers suggested the encounter may result in this column referring to the writers seeing three old bags.

Which the writers said it would.

Because funnily enough they had just seen such things – in a paddock.

The writers then said this column would also refer to the fact they were delighted to meet these readers – three lovely ladies.

And at the same place they met some other readers too – in their case not for the first time their paths have crossed on the very aptly named Inland Scenic Route which is heaven to drive.

There is actually a worldly place called Heaven.

To be precise it’s actually a designated district in Washington USA called Swede Heaven.

In 2010 the population numbered 768 and we haven’t the faintest idea why it’s called Swede Heaven.

But here’s a thought, the residents of Swede Heaven probably don’t give a monkey’s and may well prefer the name of their village to the moniker of a town in Kentucky which is called . . . wait for it . . . Monkey’s Eyebrow.

Not sure if there are monkeys there, but we’re pretty sure there’ll be some canaries.

I don’t give a stuff about Auckland news

T

here’s one word to describe the relocation of radio and TV news services to Auckland.

The word is stupid.

TV news moved north about 40 years ago.

The story goes that the editor liked living in the City of Sails better than Avalon in the Hutt Valley, so the newsroom moved with him.

What we now have is an Auckland-centric view of New Zealand and the world.

A good chunk of the evening

news and sport is about events in our largest city. While some coverage is justified, other news items are almost alien to the rest of New Zealand.

In most bulletins we’re told about Auckland real estate, congestion on arterial roads leading to the CBD, the impact of Covid-19 on the sale of Ponsonby custard squares, and whether Level 3 has affected the turn out of the Gay Parade.

When it comes to most of their issues, I don’t give a stuff.

Wellington was a very central city to reflect the country’s news.

While there always was a danger that parliiament could dominate headlines, it was ideally located

to look north and south for its news.

Now that objectivity has gone and we receive a distorted idea of the issues that are meant to resonate throughout both islands.

Too many people view the 6pm news as something that doesn’t involve them or their community.

It’s true that Auckland pays lip service to the other three main centres and, this week, gave comprehensive coverage to the 10th anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.

TV One has even relocated staff to some provincial centres, but the venues are firstly touristy and

enjoyable to live in, rather than places where news flows out of every orifice.

The stringers aren’t based in Invercargill, Timaru, Wainuiomata, Palmerston North or Hamilton.

It seems ironic that our provincial newspaper, with a long pedigree, is campaigning for a better deal for a competitor.

But, in Ashburton, we want our stories, the good and even the not-so-good, to be read, listened to or viewed nationally.

But we live a futile existence if we only sit back and complain.

Nothing is going to happen until we challenge the system. As a publicist.

I’ve done that many times on behalf of clients who live in the lower half of the North Island.

On every occasion I was told TV’s Wellington office was understaffed and only able to cover the Beehive and a few “under their noses” stories.

But giving up isn’t the answer.

It can only improve with an ongoing commitment to demand for something better.

Another option is to form our own production company and pitch for NZ On Air funding for a series to be based here.

There’s no time for complacency.

Come on Ashburton, let’s do it.

Calls for New Zealand to host Winter Olympics The Winter Olympics have never been held in the southern hemisphere and it’s about time they were, Bruce Ullrich, says.

The former vice-president of the NZ Olympic Committee, Ullrich said the only country capable of staging them downunder is New Zealand and he believes New Zealand should stake its claim sooner rather than later.

Ullrich said the recent successes of our snowboarders overseas and the development of winter venues such as Queenstown, Wanaka and Mount Hutt, makes this country an ideal location.

“All venues have proved themselves as capable of holding a range of international winter sports such as freestyle, alpine and short track skiing, speed and figure skating, bobsleigh, luge, ski jumping and snowboarding,” Ullrich said.

Ullrich also sees a role for Christchurch.

“I would support Christchurch as the headquarters for the Winter Olympics with competitors and officials based there as well as at a sub-village in Queenstown and Wanaka.”

“Ice-skating and curling could be held in venues around Canterbury.”

New Zealand will be seen internationally as one of the safest countries to visit in the wake of Covid-19 he said, and a compelling choice for the Olympics once the government relaxes its borders.

“Unlike the Commonwealth Games, the Winter Olympics attracts huge TV coverage and revenue because of the spectacular nature of the event,” he said.

Growing pains at Allenton School

Former vice-president of the NZ Olympic Committee, Bruce Ullrich, believes Mt Hutt and other South Island venues are primed to host the Winter Olympics.

Ullrich, who’s been Chef de Mission for three Commonwealth and Olympic Games teams, would like the government and Olympic Committee to express interest, then carry out a feasibility study and prepare a proposal.

He acknowledges the idea isn’t purely his, stating he has received a number of endorsements for an earlier proposal.

They include a letter from Petter Ronningen, President of the Organising Committee for Lillehammer which staged the Winter Olympics in 1994 who said “the impact of such a project for your city and country is almost impossible to imagine”.

Continued urban growth in the Allenton area is putting the squeeze on at Allenton Primary School.

Allenton school is a steadily growing school, but with little physical room for growth.

While it is in line for some roll growth upgrades it may be forced to alter its school intake zone to manage its roll growth.

Principal Bruce Tilby said the school is already on the way to overflowing.

“We have been firmly directed that we are on our way to overcrowding from the Ministry of Education,” Tilby said.

Allenton is one of Ashburton’s biggest suburbs, making up 35.2 per cent of the Ashburton population and new subdivisions opening up in the area are only set to accelerate the roll growth.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) had the Allenton School roll for 2020 at 407, but Tilby said they actually had 440 students by the end of the year.

Allenton had around 65 Y6 pupils moving on to intermediate schooling at the end of last year, but already had 20 new enrolments starting on day one and around 50 pre-enrolled students that will start during the course of the year, Tilby said.

Most of the buildings standing on the Allenton School grounds were built in the 1950s and it currently has some classes temporarily taking place in parts of the school that aren’t designed for teaching purposes, Tilby said.

Under the MOE’s capital works pipeline, Allenton school will be able to build seven more teaching facilities, with construction scheduled to begin during the April school holidays.

These new teaching facilities will help hold the current roll with a small amount of growth in the roll.

However, the MOE has also started a review of the school’s current zoning which Tilby said will not immediately impact its roll growth.

Allenton School is now seeking feedback about the current zone and the potential to reduce it.

Four generations of Brodies fly the skies

A

viation is part of Russell Brodie’s DNA. It’s played an important role in his family’s life for more than 100 years and dates back to grandfather, Ross Brodie.

Ross trained as a pilot at Sockburn in 1917 before sailing to England to join the Royal Flying Corps and take the fight to the enemy above the trenches on the Western Front.

His life nearly ended in London when a stray bomb from a lumbering Zeppelin fell close by.

It would have ended the Brodie lineage.

Instead, Ross was posted to Egypt where the weather was better and he could complete his training. His task was defending various British encampments, a few sorties and flying shotgun when the mail was delivered.

His grandson, Russell, has retained Ross’ logbooks and diary.

It tells of one incident when he flew as protection behind the Royal Mail plane. It landed with letters from home but a rebellion by nearby Arabs saw Ross attacked, his plane destroyed and

only an armoured car rescued both pilots.

Ross returned home to the family property on Rangitata Island and became a sheep and cropping farmer. Later he married May McLean from Ashburton, who trained as an opera singer and spent several years performing in opera in Australia and Europe. She gave recitals in Rome and Milan and witnessed Nazi rallies during the 1930s, but that’s another story.

Ross and May’s son Struan also developed an interest in flying.

He had a farm to run, but still found time to fly Tiger Moths from an airfield that the family had developed on the property.

“He loved his aerobatics and won a number of national titles in Tiger Moths and aero club Cessnas,” Russell recalls. “My mother Anne also enjoyed flying and became a successful competition pilot.

“She drove a car and flew an aircraft and it was totally normal to me. I couldn’t understand why other mums didn’t do it as well.”

Russell attended Rangitata Island Primary School and Geraldine High and worked on the family farm. But “bloody aeroplanes” were in the blood.

He wanted to fly professionally but his career was dashed by a serious injury. Russell lost an eye in an accident when a bale fork used for shifting hay struck him on the side of the head.

But the family’s reputation for determination took over.

“When I was told that regulations didn’t allow me to fly, I didn’t take no for an answer,” Russell says.

The 1980s was the age of microlights and Russell purchased one and flew it around the farm.

His love affair with them had begun. But first of all, he had to be patient. It took three-anda-half years before he received medical approval to complete private pilot training and nearly another 10 before he received his commercial pilot’s licence.

“I was the first person in New Zealand to receive approval to fly with one eye.”

The breakthrough saw Russell’s commitment to aviation progress to another level when he established East Canterbury Aviation Ltd. He admits there’s tongue in cheek in the title. His property borders Mid and South Canterbury – the turnoff is on the Ashburton side of Rangitata

Island – but Russell has created another piece of geography. It’s called East Canterbury and it’s where he lives.

His company imports kitset light aircraft from the United States and he then on-sells them around New Zealand. In 30 years, he’s imported about 130 aircraft.

“It’s a great passion of mine and complements sheep farming,” Russell says.

He’s also founded the New Zealand Microlight Heritage Museum and established it on his property. The museum is a work in progress and he’ll complete it when time and finances allow.

His 30 microlights, mostly in storage, come from one end of the country to the other. Two are currently airworthy and, in the future, he hopes to restore and fly the others.

But Russell’s collection doesn’t end there. He’s dedicated to De Havillands and currently has six in various stages of restoration.

Pride of place is Lily, a vivld yellow Tiger Moth, with a colourful history. The Tiger Moth was built in 1942 for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was active until the mid-1950s.

as fighter and bomber pilots,” Russell says.

The aircraft has been faithfully restored and Russell now believes it’s the most authentic RNZAF Tiger Moth currently flying in New Zealand. He takes it to airshows, flyovers and it’s regularly seen in the skies on Anzac Days and memorial events.

“It’s my private passion and I enjoy sharing its history with people in the area and aviation enthusiasts,” he says.

While the Tiger Moth will turn 80 next year, Russell doesn’t see a danger in flying it. I meticulously maintain it and keep it as safe as possible,” he comments. “The most dangerous thing about flying is driving to the airport.”

Russell is proud of the family history and is delighted there’s another generation involved in flying.

His son, named after grandfather Ross, flew 16 different aircraft on his 16th birthday and is now in the second year of his aircraft engineering apprenticeship with Air New Zealand.

“We’ve had over 100 years of continual flying in the family.

I’m delighted he’s continuing an involvement dating back to his great grandfather.”

Suffering growing pains of progress

O

nce completed, the Ashburton CBD redevelopment project will be praised for revitalising the town centre.

The only problem is that to go from concept to completion takes time.

The issue is we are currently living in between the before and after photos.

Unfortunately, us humans are an impatient lot.

We can see, from what has been completed already, that the CBD upgrade is living up to its name and worth the $15m investment.

The now mostly completed Cass Street and Tancred Street look great.

Elsewhere, it’s a war zone in parts with gaping holes, safety fences, cones and heavy machinery.

Development brings with it disruptions and frustration.

I spoke with the businesses along Cass Street, as work was winding down and moving to Tancred Street, and they all voiced their mild displeasure at the inconvenience the redevelopment had caused, but they knew it was a case of short term pain for long term gain.

They were at the end of the tunnel so could easily see the light.

For those in the Arcade it’s a bit different as they are getting it twice, once down Tancred Street and then down Burnett Street so they are currently stuck in the middle of the tunnel.

East Street businesses are the same, as East Street is being done in two parts.

Then it will all move to Havelock Street to coincide with the construction of the new civic centre.

These are all businesses still in recovery mode from the ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The timing of the development is not great, but the planners’ crystal ball wasn’t able to foretell a global pandemic.

The work has to happen, so the sooner the better.

Get the band aid ripped off as soon as possible.

After all the whole point of the project is the revitalisation of the town centre, both physically and economically.

It’s a shame that to achieve that end goal it will inhibit some of the economic prosperity of the people it aims to help.

It’s the nature of the beast.

The disruption and frustration will be temporary and this time next year will be forgotten while we all enjoy a vibrant CBD.

How much is that Harley in the window?

I

t’s always been there I guess.

Lurking in the background.

The latent motorcycle gene.

But recently the sleeping gene was awakened.

I’d been visiting friends who have a hangar full of replica warbird aeroplanes and motorbikes.

All lined up in a very neat row and there on the very end the one that caught my eye.

It was a Royal Enfield 500 of gorgeous classic lines.

Looking right out of the 40’s.

Immaculate. Mint.

“Gee, I like that. That’s nice,” I said. “Did you restore it or was it done by a previous owner?

“No, it’s a new motorbike,” came the reply. They are manufacturing them again to this classic design.

Well I stood and considered this beauty from all angles and then “ping” the “I want one” gene awoke within.

I quickly did a spontaneous mental calculation of my age, versus riding experience and ability, versus wisdom and I have to tell you one side of the ledger was looking pretty telling.

As we retired to the lounge for tea and most excellent lamingtons loaded with whipped cream, throughout the conversation my mind kept drifting back to the Royal Enfield.

I could just picture it in my garage where in all probability, I’d look at it every day and ride it possibly once a year, or maybe once every two.

Once home I scoured the internet to learn more and indeed there are a few different era-correct liveries these bikes can be secured in, all look pretty amazing.

That blinking gene, evidently not completely suppressed, shot back into action.

By this stage I had gone past said location, but my curiosity was piqued.

I committed a left-hand turn, a quick trip around the block and pulled up right outside.

“Wow, that’s nice.”

Here we go again.

I was proceeding south down East Street and the motel strip when something caught my eye parked out front of a local motorcycle dealership.

“Geez, what’s that?”

I spent the next few weeks talking myself down from that ledge.

Neighbour Sylda was no help.

“Just buy it. Why don’t you just get it?”

“No, no, no,” I replied.

At this point Mrs Mac showed quite an interest and was even impressed by the abundant pictures on my phone.

That was until I started to “actually” show an interest again and she immediately recoiled in the opposite direction.

’Cos that’s what some women do, right? I’ll never work that one out.

It’s all to do with the complicated area of reverse psychology I guess.

Anyway, I think I’m cured now.

I asked a friend, very experienced in the motorcycle business about the whole conundrum.

“Ever had a bike?”

“Yes! A Suzuki 50 in 1972.

“But what other bikes have you had or ridden since?

“None.

“Don’t do it. I like you, so don’t do it.

“Thanks mate.”

Cured.

In an era when you can operate a business from a laptop anywhere in the world, Paul Mullan has chosen Lake Hood to run his international operations. Malcolm Hopwood caught up with Paul just before he flew to Queenstown to film jetboat racing.

aul Mullan lives at Lake Hood but his world extends far beyond Ashburton, or even New Zealand.

He’s an entrepreneur and businessman and could easily flash four or five different business cards for successful enterprises he’s involved in.

Today Paul’s in Central Otago with a film crew shooting jetboat racing.

From the Dart River at Glenorchy to the Matukituki River in Wanaka, he’s directing action for the NZ Jet Boat River Racing Association.

On Wednesday he spoke with conviction about Down Under on Route 66, curtailed at present by Covid-19. But for eight years Paul and wife Robyn hired throbbing Mustangs and took couples along Route 66 from Chicago to LA and back again.

If Covid-19 hadn’t stranded him in Mid Canterbury, he would have rejoined Robyn in Sydney and be running Black Magic Media, a TV production company he established in 1995.

But his focus at the moment is Alpine Jet Thrills, a jetboating and air boating venture that he’s nurturing deep into the upper reaches of the Waimakariri.

It might sound strange, but Paul owes his love of jetboating and TV production to the Methodist Church. His father was superintendent of the Methodist Central Mission in Dunedin, based in a CBD building where TV One was its tenant.

It also owned Kawarau Falls Holiday Camp on Lake Whakatipu and leased its jetty to local commercial jetboat operators.

Back in 1979, it only took a handshake for Paul to be engaged by TV One, but he had to prove himself.

He applied for a TV assistant’s job and got it. “I did two days’ work experience and then sat down and wrote two pages of what TV One offered me and what I could do for it in return,” he recalls.

He started pushing blocks on Play School and was quickly elevated to floor manager for Beauty and the Beast with Selwyn Toogood, before settling as a cameraman on a host of TV One productions.

“Back then, 50 per cent of New Zealand’s on-air content came out of Dunedin with 25 per cent of staff. We presented Spot On, Play School, Wild South, Super Sale with

Bob Parker and lots of outside broadcasts,” Paul says.

But, in his spare time, jetboating was becoming a passion.

“Kawarau Jet ran from the holiday camp jetty and I would help out on the boats,” he says. “It became a huge part of my life. Jetboating was the start of adventure tourism in the region and the allure for me was almost magical.”

The love of jetboating stayed with Paul when he moved to Christchurch as a cameraman on such shows as That’s Country, a stellar C&W series. He was into racing and, together with Bruce Street, won the NZ Jet Sprint Championship in 1985.

Three years earlier he contested the World Championships in Mexico with Norm Bagrie from Hinds. They didn’t win but brought home enough stories to keep the crowd in the public bar entertained all night.

In 1985 Paul left jetboating behind, at least for a year or so. He was engaged by Channel 10 Sydney, as a cameraman but, within months, was studio news director for Good Morning Australia, the 6am and 6pm news bulletins.

He’ll remember well his first day on the job. Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on takeoff. “We’d never done live crosses on the early news

but, on this bulletin, we linked to Cape Canaveral, Canberra and key parts of the USA to get comment and eyewitness accounts.”

Earlier that morning the director of news put his hands on Paul’s shoulder as they were going to air and said “you’ll get your wings today, boy”. He didn’t just get his wings, he got the whole fuselage.

As a studio director assigned to news, Paul was at the coal-face of the best stories from Australia and the world. It was an exciting cocktail of information. He directed Face to Face with Kerry O’Brien, the guru of political interviewers.

Presiding over three identical sets for the show in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney, Paul directed a combination of live and pre-recorded segments, depending on the schedule of politicians. He was also executive director for Qantas Inflight TV, producing daily news, docos and magazine programmes for all Qantas aircraft.

But there was something missing in his life. It was owning and running his own business. In 1995 Paul took redundancy and established Black Magic Media. While its income was anchored by pharmaceutical videos, it enabled him to

He’d brainstormed covering The Variety Bash, a 10-day charity car rally which covered 7000 kilometres around Australia while at Channel 10 and he inspired similar coverage within his own production house.

Projects included the Torch Relay for the Sydney Olympics – 120 days on the road with revolving film crews supplying daily world newsfeed – and the Bathurst 12 Hour race at Mount Panorama where staff expanded from six to 60 for the week-long event.

There were other events such as the Sunraysia Safari Rally in Wentworth, Victoria, and his favourite, World Series Jet Sprinting, a business he established with Australian, Jeremy O’Driscoll.

It also enabled Paul to cross the Tasman and produce programmes for Targa Rally, the Otago Classic Rally, the Silver Fern Marathon Rally and other motoring events back in New Zealand.

But how does this Dunedin high-flier, based in Sydney, end up looking out on a tranquil canal at Lake Hood?

His love of jetboating saw him

connect with the late Duncan Storrier from Ashburton and his legendary World Jet Boat Expeditions.

They’d met at jetboating events so when Duncan asked him to join his party and produce a documentary retracing the path of Jon Hamilton and Sir Edmund Hillary in the Himalayas, Paul agreed.

They then went to places because it “hadn’t been done before” from South America to Siberia, from Tasmania to the Arctic Circle.

Duncan led the party, Paul filmed the adventures and TV3 showed them in New Zealand.

When Duncan suggested a jetboat museum should be established at Lake Hood, Paul and Robyn travelled to Mid Canterbury and discovered their paradise at the lake. They decided to build there and use it as their New Zealand base.

While the jetboat museum didn’t proceed, Paul is now pursuing the venture at Springfield as part-owner of Alpine Jet Thrills.

Despite dwindling tourists and the pandemic still threatening the world, they decided to give New Zealand’s first commercial passenger air boat a shot, the

kind you see on the Florida Everglades. Remember Gentle Ben? “It’s an armchair ride over wet stones,” he says.

Being an entrepreneur may not be part of Paul’s philosophy but that’s what he is. “I never sleep in. I get up and get things done. I get a buzz out of doing things that others might find oddball,” he says.

And, at 60, he’s going to keep doing things until he drops.

“I get immense satisfaction out of seeing something accomplished.

I’m a jack-of-all-trades but not a master of none. I’m a master of some.”

Real fruit ice cream with a side of charm

I

n a small place like Mayfield there aren’t a lot of people like Jake Manhire.

Jake has a disability. He doesn’t have a left hand, and he also suffers from an intellectual disability.

And while that mostly affects his speech, he can still hold a funny conversation or two.

Jake’s an inspiration. He might have been dealt a tough hand but he doesn’t let any of that stop him getting on with life.

And when it came to his family’s dream of opening a café where ice cream was the star, Jake came into his own.

It hadn’t been the easiest couple of years for the Manhire family with dad Allan suffering a brain haemorrhage in 2018.

That meant the family’s café owning dream was put on the back burner for a while.

They’d bought a plot of land in 2013 and since then preparations had been slow, but finally their dream has become a reality and Ze Old Folks Shack, known as ZOFS, is in business.

When it came to opening the food shack “Jake just took an interest,” Deborah Manhire said.

But for him it is more than just an interest and now he has his own ice cream hut in the café complex.

Deborah had her ideas about the hut’s name, but Jake had his own ideas too.

“I said why don’t you call it Jake’s Real Fruit Ice Cream,” she said.

Jake, however, waited until he felt he had the perfect name for it – Happy Sundae’s.

It’s a real play on words and Jake came up with it all on his own, Deborah said.

Once the name was confirmed Jake decided that every sign that said Happy Sundae’s should also have an image of the sun because you only have ice cream on sunny days.

Working as part of the family business is confidence boosting for Jake, and even before we opened he was excited. It lifted his spirits and the family noticed a big change in him,

she said.

“He gained more confidence.”

For Jake, the change was simply summed up.

“When I opened up my own business, it made me smilier again,” he said.

Zofs Café complex consists of the food truck and Happy Sundae’s under a pergola.

With a grassed area out the back, it feels like a secret garden that people might not expect in Mayfield, Deborah said.

Jake’s happy attitude is reaping rewards, with a Facebook message from an 81-year-old man from Tauranga who said he and his late wife

had raised a child who faced similar challenges to Jake.

So impressed was he by Jake’s attitude that he donated $100 so he could give out free ice cream to deserving people.

Jake’s goal is to help people like himself, He hopes one day that Zofs can become a meeting place within the district where families with challenged children can come.

Regardless of who walks through the door, Jake said if the door is open, he’ll be there to say hello and ready to encourage visitors to enjoy his real fruit ice cream.

Remember the Space Balls?

am sure that many of you who are familiar with some of the Ashburton District’s weirder occurrences have rolled your eyes by now.

It has been a while since a fullblown story has been published on the space balls, but I am sure that a lot of you will not need reminding of these strange events.

For the uninitiated – the space balls are a set of mysterious metal balls that fell from the heavens above Mid Canterbury, and landed in paddocks across the Ashburton District.

Looking back on newspaper articles from the seventies and the decades following, it is interesting to see the contemporary theories surrounding these mysterious metal orbs, and the explanation is surprising – although obvious.

The story of the space balls begins in 1972, with local farmers discovering odd objects in their paddocks across the Ashburton District.

The spheres appear On April 3, 1972, a brilliant light was seen crossing the sky above Manapouri at 1am, and was observed fragmenting into 15 to 20 “pieces” above Queenstown before travelling over Lake Aviemore.

The meteor-like anomaly flared and disappeared for a moment, before five distinct tracks of light reappeared and were last seen over Ashburton.

Later that same day, John Lindores of Huntingdon discovered a large metal ball on his property, 200m from his home.

According to a Guardian retrospective on these events by Annie Studholme, the puzzled Lindores ended up calling the police.

The orb weighed 13.6 kilograms, was 380mm in diameter, and had an unusual burnt-out hole on one side, the edges of which seemed to have been warped and bent back as if the ball had been exposed to extreme heat.

On the other side of the ball, a protruding ring with a small hole stuck out from the surface of this mysterious object, which was clearly welded together from two halves.

Sergeant Wheeler contacted the technical staff from the Royal NZ Air Force as well as the US Navy.

The next day, Captain Boucher of the US Air Force tracking station at Mount John, Lake Tekapo, came to examine the ‘space ball’ as it was now known.

The only thing he could determine for sure was that it was “only a small piece of a large object”.

Its origins could not be clearly determined, and so as a precaution the space ball was left covered in a cell at the Ashburton Police Station in case it proved to be radioactive.

More balls make a landing Eventually, the National Radiation Laboratory of Scientific and Industrial Research in Christchurch revealed that the space ball was not radioactive, before the object was sent up to the DSIR in Wellington.

The DSIR found that it was made of a titanium-based alloy, common in the construction of air and spacecraft.

Not long after the first ball’s arrival, another showed up on Gavin Thomson’s farm at Hinds,

and then another in North Otago, followed by two more – one at Lynnford and another one near Hinds.

While all this was happening, both the United States and the Soviet Union denied responsibility for the space balls which had now enthralled the collective imaginations of Mid Canterbury.

Later in 1972, the Hinds Gymkhana Club tried to secure the space balls for a display at their annual Labour Day gymkhana, but were denied this by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sir Keith Holyoake.

After this spate of findings, things calmed down and the space balls were not mentioned much in the years following the phenomena.

Six years later, in 1978, another space ball made a landing in one of John Lovett’s paddocks at Eiffelton, and the same procedure was followed as with the last space balls – it was sent off to be tested for radiation, and this test came back negative.

Another ball was found too, but these later incidents were debunked and these copycat balls were found to have been modified sea floats, which were burnt with a blowtorch to give the impression of having entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

Real or hoax?

Naturally, some speculated that the space balls were an elaborate hoax – one which we might compare today to the mystery of the shiny metal monoliths that are still appearing in odd places around the world.

However, the idea of the balls being a hoax was discounted by the fact that the alloy that comprised the space balls was very expensive and hard to manufacture.

As mentioned before, the US nor the USSR would claim

responsibility for the space balls, but speculation pointed towards the most likely origin for the space balls – that they were in fact spacecraft parts.

It was not until 2002, when certain government documents were declassified, that the truth of the space balls could be certifiably explained.

The first set of space balls came from the Soviet Venus probe Kosmos 482, which separated into four pieces in an Earth parking orbit while attempting to manoeuvre into a Venus transfer trajectory.

Two of these pieces remained in low Earth orbit before descending on New Zealand, setting off the whole space ball phenomena.

Funnily enough, the majority of Kosmos 482 is still up there in Earth’s orbit, and is expected to crash back down to earth in two to four years’ time – we may have not seen the last of the space balls after all!

ith our travels hermetically confined to our own shores for the past 12 months, it’s never ceased to amaze me just how many signature treats and iconic tastes burst forth all over New Zealand.

Some star specimens have cultivated folklore-like status, lording over their location like a landmark on a plate.

Fergburger in Queenstown is such a case. But for all the whipped-up hype that can leave you feeling impelled to buy into it through FOMO, here’s my list of New Zealand’s greatest holiday tastes and signature treats that deserve to be threaded into a road trip.

By no means is this an exhaustive list – the entries I’ve included are merely a collection of my favourite holiday tastes, and where their retail presence has become an iconic regional attraction in their own right.

Chocolate. Yes, this will be highly contentious, but despite visiting and grazing from a plethora of artisan chocolatiers across the country, Schoc Chocolate in Greytown gets my gold star.

The artisan chocolate studio and kitchen is housed in a super cute colonial cottage on the main street of Greytown.

Established by Murray Langham 18 years ago, Schoc is fawned over for its extensive range of handmade gourmet chocolates and unusual flavour combinations.

First runner-up? Makana Confections in Kerikeri. Home to their flagship boutique chocolate factory, Makana also operate a sister branch in Blenheim.

An essential dimension to a memorable trip, no matter how short or long, is the kai we eat along the way, writes Mike Yardley.

A bit closer to home. Barker’s has a mind-boggling product range of 600 items, their mainstay is juices, syrups, sauces, preserves, chutneys, smoothies and jams.

Where’s my go-to for supreme cheese rolls? Invercargill’s Batch Café in Spey St. Could there be a better tasting oyster anywhere in the world than the Bluff Oyster? These delicate and succulent shellfish

are dredged along the coastlines of Southland between March and August every year.

Harvested for over a century, if you want the freshest tasting Bluffies, you can’t go wrong by ordering up a dozen battered oysters with chips, from Fowler’s Oysters shop, on Ocean Beach Road in Bluff.

Fish ‘n Chips – what shop passes muster as destination dining?

My vote goes to Bobby’s. No visit to Tauranga is complete without a fresh feed from Bobby’s Fresh Fish Market.

I’ve never seen so many people patiently lined up for their fill of freshly cooked snapper, in beef fat not oil, at 10am.

The shop edges the fishing wharf where the fresh produce is brought ashore. How’s that for a zero kilometre meal?

Back in the big time

After close to 15 years in the abyss, Mid Canterbury tennis is staring down the barrel of something quite remarkable today at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

A decision was made prior to this season beginning to go back in time and enter a team in the Tennis Canterbury Premier competition, after more than a decade of absence.

And today, under the Country Ashburton banner, the side has a chance at earning themselves not only a spot in the playoffs stage of the competition – but a realistic hope of earning a home semi-final berth as the second-placed team in

the Canterbury competition.

“This weekend’s match will be the biggest of the season, there’s no doubt about it,” Mid Canterbury tennis manager, Jack Tiller said.

“After such a long time away from the competition and deciding to bring a team back, making the big stage of the season would be a great reflection on all the hard work and dedication that’s gone in by everyone involved.”

Country Ashburton currently sits fourth on the competition table – but is only four points behind the second placed Elmwood.

Table-toppers Cashmere are well clear at the top of the standings and are assured a straight path to the final, but could do the Ashburton side some favours today by

“We’ll be going hard to get that win, and a convincing win at that,” Tiller said.

“The way it looks, we’re reasonably confident of how the table will play out irrelevant of today’s result, but it would be nice to make a statement and really push for that second spot.”

Tiller will play in the No.1 spot today

for the Country Ashburton side, joined by Sam Bubb and No.2, Cameron McCracken at No.3 and Ben Smith at No.4 and he said that the efforts of both Bubb and Smith this season had played a big part in why they were in the position they find themselves in heading into today.

“They’ve been huge, they’ve won a lot of games that perhaps, on paper, they shouldn’t have won.”

Play kicks off today at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre at 1pm, and Tiller urged anyone willing to come along and cheer the team on to do so, as noise and support from the sideline would be a massive boost.

DOWN TO THE WIRE TENNIS

Form guides in Mid Canterbury A Grade tennis count for nothing today as the pool play stage of the competition comes to an end before the playoffs in March.

And while plenty of eyes will be firmly fixed on what’s happening in Ashburton Country’s bid for a home semi-final in the Tennis Canterbury Premier competition a few courts over, it’s equally as important in the A Grade action with final positions up for grabs.

In one battle, Team Yonex take on Team Wilson while in the other, Team Babolat square off with Team Head.

As it currently stands, Team Wilson leads the competition with 56 points, two clear of Team Babolat with 54 and unless one side is white-washed today, it’s hard to see them not finishing in one or the other position.

Team Yonex are currently third on 45 points, with a good 10-point buffer on Team Head, who sit fourth with 35 points.

So, there’s a bit to play for today.

It’s the third time this season each team has played each other and so far, the ledger on both sides of the coin is one-all.

Team Head, who sit at the bot-

tom of the points ladder, managed to beat Babolat in the third round of the competition 8-1, but were then beaten 9-3 the second time the two sides squared off.

Similarly, the table-topping Team Wilson won 6-3 over Team Yonex in the third round of play, but were then wiped off the court by a strong Yonex side in the sixth round, losing all nine matches.

So, it really is a case of anything is possible heading into today’s action on the court.

Team Wilson, who have only lost the two matches this season, can all but assure themselves a top billing if they can beat Team Yonex – but like most weeks in A Grade action it will be very much determined by who turns up to play for what team on the day.

The day will also act as a good final hit-out for many aspirants in next weekend’s Gala Cup action at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

The pinnacle of Mid Canterbury tennis, many of the players in action today will be chasing success and some form ahead of the big dance.

A Grade tennis takes a oneweek break after today’s play for the Gala Cup next week, with semi-finals set down for March 13 and finals to be held on Saturday, March 20.

Crunch time for Allenton

It’s pressure cooker time for the Allenton senior cricket side.

After a poor run of form in recent weeks, the side will need to kick themselves in gear in the Canterbury Country cricket competition if they are to be any chance of pushing for higher honours in the second half of the season.

And it starts today.

Languishing in the middle of the points table after three straight losses in a row, they’ll need to get it all together today against the Weedons Cricket Club today at the Weedons Domain.

With just three rounds of play remaining, only victory in all three matches would give the Allenton side any hope of finishing close to the top four in the competition, but there is one thing in their favour, and that’s who they have to face.

After Weedons today, they host Peninsula Harbour in Ashburton next week and then finish off their competition round robin play with a match away against Kaiapoi.

Weedons are yet to tase success in this half of the season with five losses from five matches, Kaiapoi have only won the one match and Peninsula

Harbour sit just above Allenton on the points table.

So, based on true form – they should be able to secure three victories.

But that will rely on turning up in the right mind set and putting the head down and playing some serious cricket.

The 40-over format can often lend itself to a thrash and bash style of cricket, and Allenton at times have been guilty of throwing away their wickets after making solid starts.

That’s an anomaly they’ll be keen to redirect today.

And so, they’ll look to some of their more experienced players, batsmen like Karmjeet Singh and Manpreet Hakkla who have, at times, performed very well with the bat and shown they are more than capable of building a strong innings.

Hakkla will also be relied on with the ball, he’s taken six wickets since the season turned over post-Christmas, bettered only by Mana Singh who has been a mainstay in the Allenton bowling attack.

So, the recipe is there for Allenton, it’s really just a case of mixing it all together in the right manner.

A challenge that needs to happen quickly, or the post-season wrap will lend itself to plenty of reflection on what might have been.

Right – Allenton senior captain Karmjeet Singh will need to lead from the front today in their clash against Weedons.

Fate in their own hands

There’s everything to play for, but really nothing to lose today for the Tech Stags.

Entering the final round of pool play in the South Canterbury senior cricket competition’s 50 over season, the Stags have booked their spot in the playoffs in their debut season, but just where they will play next week is the only unknown factor.

Win and a semi-final at the Domain Oval in Ashburton is on the cards. Lose however and it’s pack up the bags and head to Timaru next Saturday for the third-andfourth playoff.

So perhaps there is an advantage to success today in their clash with Celtic, especially when you take into account that either way it’s Celtic who they will have turn around and face again in seven days’ time.

If there’s one thing the Stags have both shown and learned over the course of the competition, it’s that momentum and consistency go a long way to success in such a long season.

Victory today would give them the slight mental advantage ahead of next week, and the prospect of not having to travel two weeks in a row would also be an added bonus.

Callum Gallagher may be asked to lead from the front at the top of the order for Tech today at the Ashburton Domain Oval.

And if they needed any extra motivation, in the longer format of the game they are yet to beat Celtic this season. They opened their campaign against them way back in October and were beaten by 28 runs and then played them again a month later where they were again beaten, this time by 34 runs.

But that was back in a phase of the season where, by their own admission, Tech were trying to find their feet. Switching from

the bashing nature of the Canterbury Country competition to the much more structured and methodical style of play in the 50over format in South Canterbury, they took time to adjust.

It’s really shown since the competition returned for 2021 with the side losing just one fixture, to the table-topping Pleasant Point, but winning their other three games to see them push for a top four spot and bring plenty of forward momentum into the final

stages of the season.

Taking the gamble to shy away from the Canterbury Country scene was a big call, but to this point it’s proven to be the correct decision with Tech really announcing themselves as a part of the fabric now and proving their worth with some strong results on the pitch.

Today they’ll need to rely, yet again, on their experienced and in-form players.

Ryan Bell and Des Kruger have

been demons with the bat in recent weeks, and again will need to knuckle down and show some resolution while players like Richard Print, Bevan Ravenscroft and Harry Jones will be asked to do plenty with the ball.

Not scoring enough runs with the bat has been the downfall thus far against Celtic, so altering that anomaly will be the first step on the way to winning today.

Play begins at the Ashburton Domain Oval at 12 noon.

SWIMMING

Young swimmers shine at Makos

The future of competitive swimming in Mid Canterbury appears in strong hands.

That’s if results at the recent New Zealand Makos Zone Junior Festival in Dunedin are anything to take a lead by anyway. A nine-strong contingent of locals from the Ashburton Swim Team travelled south for the festival last week and came home with some excellent results.

Competing in 74 events over the course of the festival, local swimmers claimed 68 personal best times.

“The future of the club is looking bright with these young stars coming through,” coach, Shane Jones said.

Held over three days, the swim meet took in four sessions including the top swimmers from across the South Island, which is the entirety of the Makos zone. Three more zones exist nationally, all across the North Island.

Ashburton’s three leading lights

from the meet were 11-year-old Amwolf Artz, 10-year-old Tineke Artz and 10-year-old Cooper Ward.

Amwolf picked up a first placing in the 50 metre kick as well as placings in the 50 metre freestyle, 200 metre backstroke and 100 metre backstroke.

Tineke was first in both the 100 metres freestyle and 200 metre freestyle while placed in both the 200 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke and 50 metre kick.

Ward was in excellent form winning the 200 metre freestyle, 200 metre individual medley while placed in the 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre butterfly, 50 metre freestyle and the 100 metre backstroke.

Pip White, who accompanied the team south said there was plenty of positives to take away from the trip for everyone.

“This meet was the opportunity to concentrate on skills and was a chance to see what was needed to be at the top of the game,” she said.

“All the swimmers looked great in the water and to have this level of personal bests was very exciting.”

The future of the club is looking bright with these young stars coming through.

OPINION

Sports news – it doesn’t happen without your input

O

ne of my first jobs as a sports journalist when working in Christchurch was handling the Youth Sport section each week.

It was a page dedicated to celebrating the success of youngsters within the Canterbury region, who were out and about and doing great things on the sporting field.

It’s a money-for-jam type of job.

People love reading about the trials and tribulations of up-andcoming sporting stars of their community, and it’s equalling as gratifying for the writer too, because there is always the chance of getting the first bite of the cherry at a potential worldwide superstar.

My time writing the Youth Sport page led to a few of those moments – none greater than identifying a couple of rockstar rugby players, who at the time were just school kids, showing promise but without any real firm proof of how they’d go.

Christchurch Boys’ High School v old foe, St Bede’s, in 2012.

A clearly gifted second-five standing in the midfield for Boys’ High was a young Anton Lienert Brown.

Even at that point, there was something about the kid.

At second five-eighth, Anton

Lienert Brown looked about as close to a future All Black as you would likely find in New Zealand schoolboy rugby. Super Rugby coaches will be falling over themselves to try and get the youngster onto their playing roster in the future – I wrote in The Press.

I’d heard all about LienertBrown before the match, but wit-

nessing his skill set and ability in the flesh only underlined that talent, and reaffirmed to me that being able to detail these stars at a young age was a huge moment in time.

The second big moment came when I was asked to cover a club rugby game featuring a young first-five for Linwood.

His name, Richie Mo’unga.

A teenager, still eligible for the Under 19 and Under 21 grades at the time, Richie was running the cutter in the Christchurch Premier Rugby Competition, and destroying teams with the skill set that we have now come to love and know.

In his debut for the senior side he scored 32 points, barely out of his school uniform, touching down for three tries and kicked 17 points from his boot.

I was able to follow his journey from that point, and had the pleasure of sitting down with his parents when he was selected in the Canterbury NPC team.

Both parents had reservations about their boy playing with the big names of the game, and had hoped for a few more years before such an elevation.

It’s an absolute privilege of the job.

But you don’t just stumble

across these stories without the help from the community.

There are rising sporting stars out there in every walk of life in our community.

Be it on the rugby field, or something far more obscure than you’d think of like the game of darts, or petanque.

Either way though, I want to cover those stories.

I want to bring you the news and talents of these people before they hit the big time and media restrictions from the corporate world limit their availability to us.

So, consider this a bit of a public plea.

If you know of a young sporting star, or even an old sporting star for that matter, who deserves to have their story told to the wider Mid Canterbury community then get in touch.

In an ideal world, we’d know of everything and everyone, but the truth of the matter is we don’t and it would be damn hard to even try to.

So, we need our community, our readers to help guide us there by telling us.

So, get in touch and we’ll do our best to give as many people as we can their moment in the sun that they so richly deserve.

OPINION

No more comebacks for Tiger

L

et’s all hope golfer Tiger Woods can live a long and contented life.

Whether he ever picks a club up in anger again is neither here nor there.

What’s important is that he’s able to recover from the serious car crash he suffered this week, and able to live without being a force of golfing nature.

Woods, by any measure, is an all-time great in his sport.

He’s also made himself and his fellow professionals hugely rich.

Golfers made a good living prior to Woods’ emergence on the professional scene in 1996, but these days private jets have replaced cars as the players’ primary mode of transport.

Worldwide, the game’s appeal to recreational players also owes much to Woods.

But that doesn’t make him a particularly likeable character.

Warmth is not the first word Woods’ name conjures up.

People respect Woods and players, particularly, are grateful to him, but he’s never been the life and soul of the locker room.

Never been famed for his rapport with fans or tournament volunteers.

Woods has always been about the business of winning, and not

a lot’s been allowed to get in the way of that.

Is that how it should be?

Are the record books all that matter?

To what extent – if any – is the personal appeal of the athlete relevant as well?

Novak Djokovic won his 18th Grand Slam tennis title the other day.

Twenty is the record, jointly held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

In head-to-head clashes with Federer and Nadal, Djokovic has a winning record and you imagine it won’t be long until he has more Grand Slam titles too.

But will anyone ever regard him as a better player than, say, Federer?

And if not, why not?

Djokovic spoke on Sunday night, after winning his ninth Australian Open, about how hard it is to be him.

About how people misconstrue his words and deeds and how wounded he is by criticism.

Did those comments endear him to anyone?

Not particularly.

And then

there’s former All Black Daniel Carter.

He also chose Sunday as the day to get a few things out in the media.

In his case it was the “news” that he was retiring from rugby.

Never mind that it’s all been a farewell tour from the

moment he stopped playing test footy in 2015, Carter doesn’t miss too many opportunities to put himself in the public eye.

His “announcement” prompted the usual waffle about where he ranks among the finest first five-eighths and if we’d ever see his like again.

Just as we’d all wondered way back in 2015.

But the thing with Carter is that the public love him.

I’m not aware of him having said a single interesting thing ever, and yet his every word and deed is reported as if it were news.

The same goes for his longtime team-mate Richie McCaw. These are beloved characters whose decency only enhances their greatness.

People say we love to chop tall poppies down, well it’s hard to remember Carter or McCaw ever being cut off at the knees.

They have sold themselves as humble, unaffected country boys and everyone has bought it.

Likeability counts when it comes to our sports stars.

Think of New Zealand men’s

cricket team captain Kane Williamson.

What a lovely young man.

You don’t read or hear any criticism of him because, again, he’s just so unassuming.

Previous New Zealand batsmen of his ilk, though, such as Glenn Turner and Martin Crowe, did fall foul of people occasionally because they could be opinionated and difficult.

This is what makes Woods so intriguing.

Athletes and governing bodies and organisations the world over have taken to social media this week to say they’re praying for him.

Presumably because not publicising that they’re praying for Woods would be disrespectful and bad for business?

Equally, though, it’s okay not to be praying for Tiger Woods right now.

To admire his many achievements on one hand, but also have misgivings about his offcourse behaviour and the way he’s treated people.

To wonder if the end always justifies the means.

Tiger Woods doesn’t need a storybook comeback.

One last Masters title won’t alter his legacy.

He just needs to find a way to enjoy life without being the best golfer in the world.

Tinwald course goes green

The Tinwald Golf Course bled green last weekend, when more than 150 players took to the greens for the annual Celtic Rugby Club golf tournament.

A permanent fixture on the calendar, the tournament always attracts huge entries, and with the club’s 100-year centenary just around the corner there was even more reason for club supporters from far and wide to be involved.

Treated to near perfect conditions, if not a little on the hot side and in need of plenty of liqud refreshments, organisers were again this week hailing an-

other successful event.

With 38 teams competing in the tournament, action on the course was red hot, with a number of more serious players being joined by those who would consider themselves not quite as serious making for plenty of laughter and fun for a major fundraiser for the club.

At the end of the day’s play the quartet of John Moses, Nigel Heney, Wayne Mellish and Duncan Lye were awarded the victory.

The Celtic club will celebrate their centenary during Easter, from April 2 through to April 4.

Chasing hometown success

For Ashburton local David McCormick, there’s no bigger thrill than having a horse in a feature race on your own home track, and today the Tinwald horseman will get to experience it once again.

McCormick will line up his promising three-year-old trotter, Maui in the Group Three Hambletonian Classic and while rated a $41 chance with the bookmakers for the $25,000 event, he’s a little more optimistic about his chances.

“I’m really happy with him, he’s worked very well this week and the draw, from what I can see couldn’t be better,” McCormick said.

Maui will start from the inside of the second row, following out the Phil Williamson-trained Leaf Stride who will be driven by fellow Mid Cantab, Ricky May. In an ideal world, a trip on the back of a potential leader would be an ideal result, but even sitting three fence would have McCormick smiling.

“If it pans out how I think it could, he’ll get his chance.

“I’m not thinking he’s a big winning chance, but if he gets the right kind of trip and gets a shot at them, I’d be disappointed if he wasn’t right in the thick of the action.”

The race has been in the long-term plan for a number of months now and McCormick gave the gelding a good spell over Christmas and New Year to allow him to develop further before setting him for today’s race.

He ran an excellent second fresh up at Addington at the start of the month and then never got warm second up, but fitness levels are now at a peak.

Maui and David McCormick (inside) will be out to try and cause a major upset in today’s Hambletonian Classic at Ashburton.

The appearance of Maui in the race is a four-pronged success story for McCormick, as well as a good walk down history lane in one of Mid Canterbury’s most renowned trotting families.

Not only does he train and drive the three-year-old, he also owns and bred him alongside his wife, Elizabeth.

And in lining up, Maui will become the third generation of his family to race in the Mid Canterbury feature following on from his dam, Shezadorabil and also his granddam, Gee Abby who both raced for McCormick’s late father, Doug.

“That’s a pretty big thrill in itself, especially for Dad’s breed.

“We’ve had a lot of fun with them over the years.”

While Doug lined up many horses in the race since it began in the mid-eighties, Maui will be just the third horse David has started.

He lined up Bushcraft who finished sixth in 1987 and Witchdoctor who placed third behind Enthusiast in the year 2000.

Maui isn’t the only connection in the race either with long-time harness supporters, the Neumann brothers, Alan and Ian also featuring with their promising trotter, Alluring Tyron.

The Neumanns won the race in 2018 with Valloria, who also raced from the Dunn stable at Woodend Beach.

Today’s meeting at Ashburton is a huge one on the annual calendar, with the Hambletonian joined by the time-honoured Sapling Stakes for the two-yearold pacers.

A small but select field has accepted for this year’s edition of the big race, with plenty of interest in many of the runners who appear, on what’s been seen so far, to be a very even bunch of competitors.
