Stubbing out smoking Hopes to stub out smoking in New Zealand by 2025 has been met with mixed reaction from Mid Cantabrians.

The Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan from the Government is proposing limiting tobacco sales to specific R18 stores or even pharmacies, reducing nicotine in products, and having a prohibition on filters in cigarettes.

It was also looking to introduce a law banning tobacco sales for anyone born after 2004.

That was part of a raft of proposals being considered by parliament in line with the country’s goal to be smoke-free by 2025.

Ashburton District councillor and pharmacist Carolyn Cameron had not studied

the proposals. But she said New Zealand’s aim of becoming completely smoke-free by 2025 was “aspirational”.

Cameron said that pharmacies could help people quit smoking, along with general practitioners.

“Pharmacies are a good first port of call,’’ she said.

“We are well placed to help people manage their nicotine addictions.’’

Guardian Facebook followers jumped on the debate, too.

Jill Stephen perhaps felt there were bigger issues to be concerned about.

“Drugs are the worst problem in NZ and the rest of the world,’’ she wrote.

“Address that problem first.’’

Council approves further funds to aid struggling CBD businesses

Further funding of nearly $200,000, to help reduce the disruption caused by the Ashburton CBD upgrades, is a possible godsend for struggling retailers.

The Ashburton District Council confirmed additional funding to keep multiple intersections open, as construction continues on a multimillion town centre revitalisation.

Retailers, struggling due to restricted access to large portions of the CBD, urged for further support at a council public forum a fortnight ago, by leaving one lane open at the intersections during construction.

Council unanimously agreed to additional funding as an aid for businesses impacted, but details were initially kept under wraps.

Retail Advisory Group spokesman Bob McDonald said, in correspondence to fellow retailers, that the business community should feel very grateful following the decision.

Retailer Chris Redmond said he did not want the local community to get into the habit of avoiding the centre of town altogether.

“By keeping the streets open

and hopefully freeing up some carparking . . . we just want to keep it easy for people,” he said.

“With the least amount of disruption.

“We don’t want to scare them off that they never come back again.”

It was revealed this week that council approved an additional $181,000 to keep roads open to traffic at the four CBD East Street intersections when construction moves into those areas.

Fellow business owner Richard Wilson was also pleased with the outcome.

“We’re very thankful,” he said.

“We’re all looking forward to November 26 (expected completion date of upgrades).”

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown admitted that the road works were an inconvenience.

“We have been doing everything we can to minimise the effect on shoppers and businesses,” he said.

“Although it will cost a little more, we felt that allowing access through the East Street intersections rather than closing them for weeks at a time is a much better option for our community.”

The $15 million CBD streetscape revitalisation is expected to be completed in November.

Councillors clash with climate change advocates

Ashburton Ward councillor Angus McKay expressed his disappointment in response to an ECan climate change engagement campaign this week.

A handful of Ashburton District councillors have challenged regional climate change campaigners, citing misrepresentation and fearmongering.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) representatives put forward a proposal for Ashburton participation in a climate change engagement campaign, during a public forum at this week’s council meeting.

The content of the campaign is being developed from a range of sources, including regional climate projections from NIWA, the Ministry for the Environment Our Atmosphere and Climate report, and a Canterbury climate change risk screening report commissioned for the Mayoral Forum.

“We need immediate and drastic cuts to our greenhouse gas,” Dr Fiona Shanhun told councillors.

“These sorts of numbers are scary.”

A series of graphs were shown during the presentation, including statistics around temperature growth globally.

Ashburton Eastern Ward councillor Stuart Wilson challenged ECan on the diagrams, believing they were “unrepresentative” to the Mid Canterbury region.

“Why do you not put the average temperature of Canterbury and New Zealand and show how much temperature has actually increased over the years . . . and give people an accurate representation.

“Why do you climate change enthusiasts not show the true picture . . . instead of frightening people.

“To me that is a misrepresentation

of what is happening.”

Dr Shanhun said she would be happy to present a New Zealand equivalent in future, however stated that climate records indicated a national annual increase of 1.1 degrees.

“It’s not too different from what we’re experiencing.”

Ashburton ward councillor Angus McKay went as far as voting against the engagement campaign, also highlighting a lack of collaboration between the regional and district council in the past.

“I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt,” he said.

“I look at the goals of the policy … I don’t think Christchurch understands this district and that’s the one thing that really grates me.”

Despite misgivings by some members, the council moved to be involved in the campaign.

Play it again, Jim Last Post bugler evokes memories

Jim Lischner has played the Last Post and Reveille for more than 50 years. It means a lot to him.

Jim had an uncle who fought at Gallipoli and another at Monte Cassino. His uncle, Jack McDonald, a World War One veteran, told Jim that, when Reveille was played in the morning, he’d look at his companions and remember them.

When Last Post was played at night, he would look at them again and see who’s missing.

That thought would be foremost in Jim’s mind when he plays the cornet at the 9am service on Anzac

morning at the cemetery and the 11am service at the cenotaph.

Gavin Hunt will play at the dawn service.

Jim is a third-generation brass musician and played his first Last Post at Tapanui in Southland at the age of 13.

He came to Ashburton from Alexandra about 40 years ago as a banker and, apart from a brief stint in Oamaru, has been here ever since.

During that time he’s played trumpet or cornet in orchestras, dance bands and operatic productions.

“I picked it up early. It’s in the blood.”

Ashburton’s rocketman is guest speaker at the reunion of former students who attended Ashburton College’s 1965-75 decade.

About 175 ex-pupils have registered to attend over the weekend of May 7-9 to reminisce, visit the existing site on Walnut Avenue, be briefed on plans for the new school and listen to Rocket Lab’s Peter Datlen.

On leaving college, Datlen joined the New Zealand Air Force as an aeronautical technician in 2008. Following several jobs, he then joined the New Zealand-founded space launch company, Rocket Lab. Datlen was part of a small team that constructed the first rocket launched in 2017 and is now lead launch technician.

He divides his time between Rocket Lab’s headquarters in Auckland and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the US. Ashburton College Alumni committee chairman, Peter Gluyas, was delighted Datlen accepted the invitation to address former students and said the alumni had a launch pad of its own.

On the Saturday night of the reunion, he would discuss a project to raise $50,000 to financially assist the college. To be called the Ashburton College Alumni Fund, the funding, administered through Advance Ashburton, would be targeted at scholarships, an electronic notice board and other activities to benefit the school.

My other car’s a Bentley

It’s nearly 90 years old, but is reliable, smooth running, stylish and has engineering excellence.

Bruce McIlroy’s 1922 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost will be one of about 20 cars taking part in the New Zealand RollsRoyce and Bentley annual rally today.

The rally, held in the South Island for the first time in three years, leaves Methven this morning and travels to Snowdon Station and then on to Gynneah Homestead for lunch.

There’s a concours event at Brinkley Lodge in the afternoon where the cars will be judged and a further return trip to Geraldine via the scenic route tomorrow.

Bruce’s Silver Ghost will be the oldest in the rally with a few Rolls and Bentleys from the 1930s and then from every decade upwards.

“We’re enthusiasts, we like gathering to exchange ideas, inspect other cars and enjoy the companionship of other Rolls and Bentley owners,” McIlroy says.

His 1922 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost is one of four in New Zealand, but the others are unlikely to have its pedigree.

In the 1920s it was shipped to Kenya and used as the Royal car for King George and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. It was later converted into a safari car and eventually found derelict.

A private owner had it restored in Nairobi and flown back to England in 1970.

The car finally made its way to New Zealand in 1992 where it was used privately and in rallies.

Teen to stand trial over crash that killed Ashburton sisters Closure for family and friends associated with the tragic car crash death of two Ashburton sisters has moved a small step closer.

Yesterday it was reported that a 19-yearold man, Levi Phillip Fiddymont, had been charged in relation to the fatal crash on the Summit Road in Christchurch on November 27, 2019 that resulted in the deaths of Tayla Alexander, 17, and Sunmara Alexander, 16.

Interim name suppression, granted when Fiddymont first appeared in court, lapsed at Christchurch District Court yesterday.

Radio New Zealand reported Fiddymont had been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, as well as dangerous driving causing injury and driving without the appropriate licence.

The sisters were passengers in Fiddymont’s car when the crash happened off the Port Hills. Tayla died at the scene, while Sunmara passed away in hospital two weeks later after suffering critical injuries in a tragedy that shook the close-knit Ashburton community.

Sunmara died on December 13 – her 16th birthday – at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital.

At the time, her father Jason Alexander was reported as saying her injuries were too severe and there was nothing more doctors could have done for her.

“It’s been a long hard fight but this was a fight she couldn’t win.”

Centralisation ‘part of Labour’s ideology’ National’s spokesperson for Local Government is concerned that Labour will impose amalgamation for amalgamation’s sake.

“But it must not become the latest plank in Labour’s centralisation agenda.”

In visiting Mid Canterbury, Luxon felt he was coming home. His grandfather, Bert Turnbull, was principal of Willowby School, he has family members farming in the district and his wife, Amanda, taught at Tinwald Primary.

He spent yesterday meeting mayors from Waitaki to Ashburton District to seek their opinion on issues and what they wanted.

His discussions with them covered local government, freshwater policies and transportation.

The dark before Ashburton’s dawn I

’ve never known so much dark since I returned to the South Island.

If there are degrees of pitch black in Mid Canterbury, then Ashburton scores 11 out of 10.

Despite illumination and the occasional beam from a passing car, our town might be a raven-haired beauty, but it’s dark.

Now, I’m not being critical, I quite like it.

It’s been years since I’ve had to close my eyes, then open them to discover I’m in the laundry instead of the bedroom.

In the North Island, there’s always light.

It comes from trip lights when the stray moggy poos in your garden or illumination from the central city, which lightens the heavens or the security bloke’s torch which shines in your face when you pick up the newspaper at 3am, mostly in your PJs. It’s ivory to Ashburton’s ebony.

And there’s always noise.

New York isn’t the only city that

doesn’t sleep. Every city from Wellington north is an insomniac.

So it’s good that Ashburton swallows a drowsy tablet and goes to bed at night. It becomes black beauty.

The trouble is, I can’t navigate in total darkness.

When I leave the bathroom at 4.30am, I turn left and stumble into the garage or leave the house entirely and fall into the shrubbery.

I’ve been out of sorts since daylight saving. Somehow Ashburton got darker when our clocks changed over Easter.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the dyslexic, agnostic insomniac,

who lay awake all night wondering if there was a dog or not. I’ve developed one of those symptoms. When I’m awake in the early hours I stare out at a heavy dose of darkness.

Dr Rosie Gibson claims she has the answer.

The only answer is more drastic daylight saving. Get it over with altogether. Let’s have two whole months of night, 11 out of 10 darkness, and then we can have daylight for the rest of the year.

When that happens, I won’t walk into the wardrobe, East Street can be upgraded until midnight, halogen bulbs will go out of business and Fiz and Tyron can sort out their domestics.

I’ll be happy.

ne vivid memory among Julie Dockrill’s three visits to Mongolia in the past eight years stands out above all others.

Julie, who’s Ashburton Hospital’s charge midwifery manager, was addressing about 60 health professionals in Mongolia’s capital city, Ulaan Bataar, about the process of normal birth.

She was talking about how long it’s acceptable for mothers in labour to push when the invited midwives, doctors, obstetricians and other lay people interrupted and started chatting in animated Mongolian.

“I didn’t know what was happening,’’ Julie recalled.

“I asked my translator why they were reacting in that way.

“I thought I’d completely offended them.”

The translator explained that, in Mongolia, babies needed to be propelled out in 20 minutes. If not, the medical people start pushing on the mother’s stomach.

“It’s a hierarchical health system and that’s the way they did it,” Julie said.

“It often resulted in blood loss, medical emergencies, babies stunned at birth needing resuscitation and sometimes death.”

Julie and her trans-Tasman medical team had a challenge in front of them. “We had to work hard to impress on them that the practice needed to change,” she said.

Julie used all her experience and research and persuaded the obstetricians to allow women to push and let the natural process of childbirth take place.

“They’ve taken that on and it’s one of a number of practices introduced that have significantly contributed to reducing the mortality rates for mothers and babies in that country.’’

For her achievements in maternal health in Mongolia, which is situated between Russia and China, Julie has been honoured internationally as one of six worldwide Rotary People of Action: Champions of Health.

“I was blown away when I received the award. I was speechless.

I’m incredibly proud to be recognised among many other deserving people nominated for Rotary health projects.”

Julie was part of a team of New Zealand and Australian midwives, plus a logistics guru, who’ve travelled to Mongolia on three occasions since 2013 to teach and contribute to the Mongolian Maternal Child Health programme manual, which educates their health professionals.

The focus was on antenatal education, but it evolved to include obstetric emergencies as the need was identified.

uals and training as part of a nationwide initiative. Their Train the Trainer curriculum has now been introduced as “best practice” by the Mongolian Ministry of Health.

Statistics, released by the ministry, show that mortality and morbidity rates have decreased by 60 per cent and 55 per cent respectively since Julie’s project was first introduced eight years ago.

“The progress has been very rewarding and humbling to me. To change practices that were culturally embedded took great courage, but they opened their hearts and minds to us,” she says. “There was a great trust in relationships between our team and their health professionals.

“We know childbirth education saves lives, saves money and empowers communities to ensure better health outcomes.”

There was no antenatal education programme in Mongolia before the trans-Tasman team arrived. The death rate for babies in their first month of life had previously been 14 times higher than in the developed world and the mortality rate for mothers, six times higher.

It must take some understanding why a midwife working in Ashburton would want to be part of a Rotary team providing life-saving treatment on the other side of the world.

Julie Dockrill simply says it’s a passion. “I’m passionate about antenatal education that allows women and families to take ownership of their own health,” she says.

“When you’ve been given an opportunity to engage your passion, it doesn’t feel like work.”

Such was her commitment that Julie used all her own leave, even taking unpaid leave to travel to Mongolia and complete all the training required to ensure the success of the programme.

At this stage Julie has no immediate plans to return. She explains the programmes they’ve installed are self-sustaining and they’ve maintained open lines of communication.

“I’m regularly in touch with the lecturers and health professionals who’ve taken ownership of what we introduced.”

Her achievement as one of six worldwide People of Action has been noted by Rotary’s International President, Holger Knaack. “I am inspired by our members who are helping millions of our most vulnerable, receive essential health services,” he says.

“With local knowledge, skills and innovative thinking, our six Champions of Health are strengthening healthcare systems and helping more people gain access to care in the long term.”

With programmes in place in Mongolia, Julie and her Rotary team have turned their attention to Nepal. They’ve already completed a scoping study in 2019 and undergone a cultural immersion tour. As part of the visit, they met with the Nepalese Government, health professionals at the Rotary Club of Kathmandu.

The team was due to travel last year, but Covid-19 intervened and the project is now on hold, ready to go when the world becomes safe again. Julie will use the same programme that was rolled out in Mongolia, tailored to the Nepalese culture.

As her maxim, she quotes Nelson Mandela.

“Education is the most important weapon you can use to change the world.”

There is a buzz in their air in Methven and it’s kind of scary, but in a good way.

The annual scarecrow trail is on again and it has attracted many parents and children, with 40 sites across the town marked with the fun-themed decoy or mannequins.

A Christchurch family, with a holiday home in Methven, has taken part in the trail for four years now.

“For the last few years, I have come down [to Methven] with the kids,’’ Tracy Stead said of the school holidays trail in which participants hunt for the scarecrows around the town, trying to guess the character depicted and then vote for their favourite. There are prizes for the most correct entries and the best scarecrow.

“We always try to bring some friends, who haven’t done something like this before. We think it’s great.”

And it’s not too late to get involved. Scarecrow trail maps are available for $10 per group from Methven’s iHub or the Four Square supermarket.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS Leap of

pays off T

en years ago Theresa and Andy Husband took the plunge and started their own business.

And today as they celebrate that milestone, they look back and say that decision was one of the best they’ve ever made. Yes, there’ve been some tough times, more than a few headaches and plenty of grey hairs, but the end result has been more than worth the odd sleepless night.

Electrician Andy was working long hours in a job he loved, as a contract electrician and Theresa was his support team at home with their two young children, Holly and Riley.

“We decided to go out on our own because we wanted to get ahead, I was already doing long hours and this was about trying to take control of our lives.

It’s been a big journey with plenty of ups and downs but we’re now in charge of our own destiny,” Andy said.

Striking out on their own was a leap of faith – and a commitment of every dollar they had. Andy’s beloved Club Sport Holden Commodore was sold, replaced with a bottle deck truck, and a small bedroom in their home became their office.

Theresa always believed in Andy’s ability to succeed in his own business.

“I knew he was really good at what he did. He had a great manner and I really believed in him – more than he believed in himself,” she said.

They struck out on their own in 2011, at a tough economic time, but through an earlier employer in Christchurch, Andy was able to secure a Fujitsu heat pump replacement contract post Canterbury earthquakes. continued over page

Growth for Aotea won’t stop at 10 years. Currently Theresa and Andy have outgrown their premises and they’re looking to move. They’re also looking to grow their team of six.

Andy reckons 10 – five teams of two in the field and himself and Theresa on the organising end is the perfect number.

“We don’t want to get too big, we want to keep this business nimble and responsive. We know almost all of our clients and we never want our people to become a number. Giving them time is important,” Andy said.

He’s now 90 per cent off the tools, spending his time on quotes and bringing in business. He admits he misses the practical side of the job but that’s more than made up by the pleasure he gets in ensuring his customers fully understand their quote and that they choose the right options for their needs.

Aotea Electric carries out a full range of electrical work including PV Solar and heat pump installation and with several dual trade staff members on the team, they can do the electrical work, plus, Andy said.

Growing their business is also about growing opportunities for their staff, Theresa said.

“We always tell them if we’re getting ahead we’re taking you with us. We want to make sure our staff feel valued and supported.”

Theresa and Andy are Ashburton locals and say there’s a huge satisfaction in owning a business that’s 100 per cent locally and NZ owned.

Remembering the fallen – now more than ever

I

t’s again time to dip our hats to our Anzac veterans and their families because April 25 really is their day.

More than a century after the doomed assault began at Gallipoli, large crowds of New Zealanders will again turn out to remember and salute the fallen and their efforts in towns and cities all over the country on Sunday.

And it’ll be no different in Mid Canterbury where big crowds are again expected at dawn and late morning services and functions that follow. There are productions and shows and a run and walking fun event for all the family to enjoy. And they will all be well attended.

Numbers attending services seem to grow every year and for some that could seem surprising to outsiders. Why? Well, everybody now knows that the Gallipoli campaign was a military fiasco, a disaster of the highest order, which ended in ignominious and tragic defeat.

It needlessly cost the lives of nearly 3000 New Zealanders, which was about a fifth of those who actually landed on the Turkish peninsula. So why, you may wonder, should we commemorate such a catastrophe?

And why does Anzac Day continue to grow each year and continue to really connect with all New Zealanders, including the very young who quite rightly would feel no duty whatsoever to ever go to war for the Mother Country to protect the British Empire, as was the case all those years ago.

Anzac Day is even more important now because in many ways it has become our de facto national day. That’s partly because Waitangi Day, our country’s actual official day, has often divided opinion and has been as much about what still separates us rather than brings us together.

Waitangi Day can, and does, create headlines and impressions for all the wrong reasons. But that’s not the case at all on Anzac Day where all cultures come together.

And we come together as one to remember our loss, as hard and painful as it remains for many.

Because the slaughter at Gallipoli and in World War One, in particular, scarred New Zealand then and it still affects us now, and that’s decades after the personal grief has passed.

It’s a loss of thousands of lives that still unites us as a country.

And that’s why Anzac Day matters. And that’s why I hope to see you at a commemorative service remembering that on Sunday.

I also hope you enjoyed our Anzac Day coverage throughout the paper on pages 4 and 27 to 33.

Anzac reflections O

n the eve of Anzac Day, we once again prepare to put aside a little time to remember those who gave their all in defence of our freedoms.

Having a grandfather who served overseas, the connection has always been real and I can recall turning out to the Cenotaph as a wee nipper and being amazed at how old they all were.

In my mind they were all old men who went away, but my young mind hadn’t factored in that time had passed and a lot of them were barely 10 or 12 years older than me at the time.

It a fairly well-known fact that a number in fact lied about their age so they could go off and serve.

When you are young, you feel bullet-proof and it all seems a great adventure.

But the grim realities of war soon emerged and for too many of our district’s sons, the people and the land they loved would be left behind forever.

Anzac – Stories and Songs From The Front Line being staged this afternoon to a sold out Event Centre has revealed poignant insights into those times. Readings of actual letters home our locals in the thick of the theatre of war have enabled those of us involved in rehearsals this week, to pause and reflect on those times.

We take so much for granted.

They gave so much for us all.

My own grandad, Joe McQuarters went away in both wars.

Crippled by illness, he was forced to remain on his ship at Gallipoli.

It doubtless saved his life. He went through a fairly lengthy rehabilitation on arrival back in New Zealand.

When World War Two rolled around he was off again, but this time being at the older end of the serving spectrum he was posted to the New Zealand Forces Club in London. I am still unclear how that actually came about, but he was front and centre for much of what went on there with visiting dignitaries and entertainers of the day.

When I was a young fella, after nana had passed away, Grandad Joe would come to our place on

Saturdays for lunch and he would invariably crank out his wartime yarns.

I’m ashamed to admit I found it all tedious back then, but with hindsight wish I had listened more intently and asked plenty of questions.

That opportunity is long gone now.

But the opportunity for any and all of us to pause and pay our respects for those who served and particularly those who paid with their lives is still very much a thing.

Last year, due to Covid, Kiwis stood at their front gates to salute those who fell.

This year, the opportunity returns for us to attend the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph at 6.30am, or the Citizens Service at the same location at 11am, the

Ashburton Cemetery at 9am, or one of the other services around the district on Sunday morning.

Refreshingly, as has been a trend for quite some years, there is a healthy respect being paid by younger generations across New Zealand to recognise the sacrifices made by generations past.

If we don’t pause and acknowledge the freedom struggles of the past, we are at risk of completely losing our perspective.

Recognising and responding to grief, loneliness P rince Philip’s funeral was a major topic of conversation in recent days. Many people said how sad, how awful it was to see Queen Elizabeth in black mask sitting alone, totally alone in the chapel.

There was admiration for the soldiers who carried the casket into the chapel, but concern for the queen dominated.

Admiration for Queen Elizabeth was submerged in empathy for her in this time of loneliness and grief.

We humans are social beings.

Our lives are lived in company with others. Other people, family and friends, have an important part to play in shaping who we are and in providing support

CHRISTIAN COMMENT in difficult times.

Reflecting on Queen Elizabeth’s grief led one person to comment on how difficult in widowhood it sometimes was to prepare proper meals.

It led another to remind me of how lonely the divorced and widowed often feel on Sunday afternoons, a traditional time to gather as family.

It is possible that Queen Elizabeth bravely, knowingly,

chose to accept loneliness in the chapel pew, as part of her acceptance of Prince Philip’s death.

She knows she will face other times of being alone in a newly strange way. She may also have accepted it as part of her duty to uphold all the requirements of social distancing and the law in these Covid-times.

Perhaps her family had wanted to sit with her and been quietly but firmly refused.

Recognising and responding to grief and loneliness is a tricky thing to do. I guess the best answer to that question of ‘how much help I will be, do I offer or not’ is found within the depth of relationship we already have.

If we have already built up a knowledge and understanding of one another it will be more likely that we can read the signs of yes, I need a hug or no, just let me get through this in my way at the moment.

To my shame I can think of times when I decided, not now but next week, and then discovered that next week was already receding into the past and I had still not written the note, picked up the phone or popped around.

I had not built up a pattern of including that person beforehand and now it was hard to do.

We in our busyness can overlook the lonely, and they can easily retreat, making it harder

to come alongside.

This is a problem for every one of us. We all have the opportunity to be part of the lifeline of care, understanding and companionship for others.

As we knit ourselves and others into human connection, as we play games, talk over a beer or a fence, phone each other, walk the dog together and so much more we build and strengthen lives and community.

God bless your next connection with a dear friend or a new neighbour or workmate.

Julia travelled to Auckland 15 years ago for an industry training course, met Ryan and the rest is history. As a couple they travelled and worked before deciding to settle in New Zealand to raise a family.

born Kaio, 12, Luca, 6, who was born in Brazil and their only Kiwi child, Nina, 4, the couple moved to the South Island 18 months ago to take up the job as managers of Porters Pass Skifield Lodge and Café.

“It was a beautiful place and I had this romantic idea of home schooling my children,” Julia said.

After about a year they realised raising

a family in an isolated location wasn’t easy, the children missed school, they missed variety and so they looked for a new challenge. They found that in Hinds.

“When we left Porters we always wanted our own café, we wanted to stay in the South Island and we wanted to be near Christchurch, but in a smaller community. We saw this advertised, came and looked and liked what we saw. It had a

Now they’re juggling three children and spending their working hours as café owners. It’s fun, satisfying and hard work, Ryan said.

He’s on early shift, but with years as a breakfast chef, the early hours are just part of life. Julia organises children, school lunches and the school delivery run before she joins him at Mac’s.

Together they prepare a range of sandwiches, rolls, bake pies and savouries, muffins and cakes and make endless cups of coffee. The food cabinet is kept stocked with freshly made goodies.

They offer a range of breakfast dishes, including eggs benedict, pancakes and french toast and will whip up toasted sandwiches to order.

While their business hours are 8.30am until 3pm, they become a takeaway business on Friday nights, but what’s on their menu is light years away from the traditional takeaway.

Yes, there are burgers and fish and chips, but they’ve added taste-tempters such as pork ribs with potato rosti, beef wellington with mash and vegetables, garlic prawns with risotto and much, much more.

For the couple, understanding the needs of their community was critical in establishing their business. For farmers in a hurry and travellers on the road, food needed to be either ready to go or quickly

prepared, Ryan said.

Over the six months they’ve been in business, support from the Hinds community had been overwhelming, he said.

“We have a lot of people who come in here every day now.”

It’s not all about making money for the Portsmouths, they are keen to give back to their new community and they’re doing this through their children’s school.

Each day they give sandwiches to Hinds School staff to distribute to students who may have come to school without lunch and they also offer discounts to emergency services personnel.

“We feel the community is helping us in our business and we want to help them,” Julia said.

For several years they ran a food trailer and they’re planning to bring that back on stream, making that service available for off-site events.

While the café might open during daytime hours only, they will open outside those hours for functions and events and that can be anything from meetings, gatherings, adult birthdays to children’s parties where they’ll also help arrange entertainment.

For the family, when school’s out for the day and they close the café doors, it’s time to head home to their small farm on the outskirts of Tinwald where they share home space with three sheep, three alpaca, one pony and five white doves.

Ashburton readying for big Anzac Day services

here’s no wet weather venue for the Anzac Day commemorations in Ashburton on April 25.

Ashburton RSA President, Merv Brenton, says “our service personnel didn’t have a wet weather venue when they fought for their country overseas so we’re not moving indoors whatever the conditions”.

Two Anzac services are at the Cenotaph at Baring Square while the third will be held at the cemetery, rain, hail or shine.

The 2020 commemoration was curtailed because of Covid-19. Instead, people stood in their driveways at home.

This year Brenton and his team have been planning the three services since early February.

The format for the Dawn Service will be traditional. It will include the National Anthem led by Amelia Jones, scripture reading, the poems Flanders Fields and For The Fallen, an address from Rangitata MP, Jo Luxton, and the last post and reveille while the flag is lowered and raised.

A key feature is the wreath laying ceremony and Brenton invites all service personnel to lay poppies at the foot of the cenotaph. Strobe lighting and sirens will precede the service.

“The dawn service is the start of remembrance for the day. It’s an opportunity to commemorate and recall,” Brenton says. “It’s hugely moving for many people who see it as their chance to pay tribute to service personnel who either served or sacrificed their lives for

their country.”

The cemetery service at the RSA section involves the MSA choir who’ll sing the National Anthem and an appropriate hymn, an address by a member of the Defence Force and the last post and reveille while the flag is lowered and raised.

Brenton anticipates the biggest audience will attend the 11am civic service.

Service men and women plus members of the police force, cadets, army and airforce personnel and scouts and guides will march to the cenotaph led by the Ashburton Pipe Band.

The event includes wreath laying, addresses from mayor Neil Brown and Merv Brenton, prayers, the reciting of commemorative poems, the last post, reveille and piper’s lament and a threegun salute.

TOM ON ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIONS: He believes everyone should commemorate April 25 as an opportunity to honour service men and women.

DRIVING SOLDIERS TO SAFETY

I

n Tom Bennett’s war he drove soldiers to safety On the family’s Wakanui farm, Tom Bennett could expertly handle a sixhorse team.

But during World War Two the horsepower increased ten-fold as he drove trucks and ambulances on the America held island of Guadalcanal in the Solomons.

Tom, now 102, joined the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry back in 1935 and was an active horseman through to the Second World War when he enlisted.

But there was limited use for horses in the Pacific campaign.

Tom sailed on a Liberty ship to Guadalcanal where he had to quickly adapt to Canadian vehicles and drive on the right-hand side of the road.

The Americans had forced the Japanese off the island but it wasn’t entirely safe. Enemy planes regularly flew over and Tom recalls throwing himself beneath a tree as the upper branches were sprayed with bullets.

“We always were conscious they could return and take the island,” he says. He was also worried about safety back home. “If the Americans hadn’t come into the war, New Zealand would have been invaded. They had the numbers,” he commented.

Tom’s job was to transport servicemen around the island or meet flights

that came in with wounded aboard and drive them directly to hospital either in “short-nosed” trucks or ambulances.

Another kind of illness was what he called anxiety neurosis when soldiers weren’t mentally or emotionally prepared for warfare. He remembers the Dear John letters they received when their relationships broke up back home.

The Americans were friendly enough and Tom talked to them but they disliked New Zealand tea and preferred their coffee, he says.

When Tom returned home, he became an essential worker on the farm but some habits die hard. He remembers leaving a dance at the Radiant Hall, Ashburton, and driving back to the farm on the right-hand side of the road. Fortunately, no-one came from the other direction.

Tom married Mary, settled back on the farm, purchased additional property on either side and maintained an interest in horses. He only settled into a retirement home in Ashburton two years ago.

He attended Anzac Day commemorations up until the end of the war but not regularly since however Tom believes that everyone should commemorate April 25 as an opportunity to honour those service men and women who served their country.

LETTERS BROUGHT TO LIFE

Hold on tight: Driving the World War Two Jeep for Saturday’s production, Anzac – Stories and Songs from the front line, are Dennis Mably (driving), Mitchell Farr (front passenger) and Jason Klever (back passenger).

The production is on at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at 2.30pm.

A strong element of the production would be remembering letters from the home front.

“The letters all relate to people who’ve booked a seat for the show.

“The majority will know, but the trio has one

surprise in hand, which they believe will overwhelm an unsuspecting member of the audience,” music director, Penny Wilson, said.

Each letter would be illustrated by an image of the serviceman who wrote it and will be accompanied by flute, harmonica or piano, as it’s read.

Wilson acknowledged that the audience would be older people who’ll know many of the songs and the authors of the letters.

“For them, Saturday’s performance will be very nostalgic and personal,” she said.

Anzac Day 1919: after the pandemic

A

shburtonians celebrating Anzac Day in 1919 must have felt very strange – they were still feeling the after-effects of a deadly disease outbreak.

It would have been surreal for two reasons, being that the outbreak of H1N1 influenza had affected Ashburton much more severely than Covid-19 did, and that the tragedies of the Great War were still fresh in the minds and hearts of New Zealanders.

The Spanish Flu made its way into New Zealand on board ships, and our army camps proved to be the most prolific breeding grounds for the virus.

Ashburton saw its fair share of grief during the influenza pandemic, which made its way south and hit us hardest between October and December 1918.

Compared to the Coronavirus outbreak, we got away by the skin of our teeth in contrast to many other countries worldwide thanks to decisive government action.

In order to understand how it would have felt to celebrate Anzac Day in 1919, let’s have a look at how Ashburton fared during the height of the Spanish Flu in New Zealand.

Borough becomes Bureau The Ashburton Guardian reported on the 10th of October 1918 that there was no serious outbreak of influenza in Ashburton, but by the 15th of November the fight against influenza in our town was being called “the new war”.

When it comes to our approach to battling infection 100 years ago, some things seem familiar while others are quite different.

Denial of a serious outbreak in Ashburton soon turned to caution, as cases began to rise in number and severity in early November.

Public buildings in Ashburton were being sprayed with disinfectant at least once a day and other measures were in place, but unfortunately things still took a turn for the worse.

Due to the “serious extent to which influenza is prevalent throughout New Zealand”, the Ashburton Borough Council office was appointed a Bureau – effectively an operations centre for managing affairs relating to the outbreak.

If one required nursing, medicine, disinfectants or any assistance, they would apply at the Bureau.

In statements undersigned by the Mayor R Galbraith, all indoor and outdoor gatherings including religious services and entertainments, were forbidden by the borough council.

Shops were closed early, and all women willing to help nurse or cook during the epidemic were called upon by the mayor to

The new war The Great War had come to a close just days prior, but we found ourselves embroiled in a brand new conflict – a war against influenza.

A sharp increase in case numbers in the middle of November had the people of Ashburton worried, and it was even said that “in one street, it was stated, in every house there were patients, many of them young children”.

An inhalation chamber was set up on Burnett Street, where people would go to disinfect the throat and lungs by inhaling zinc sulphate – a process that actually made people more vulnerable by damaging the respiratory system.

The Guardian reported that on the 22nd of November, roughly 60 families were receiving attention from the Bureau, and there were a number of cases at the County Hospital and scattered around in private residences.

A temporary hospital was active in Methven, which received its fair share of nurses appointed by the Health Inspector Mr E N Johnson.

There were many cases outside of town – on the 21st a doctor went to visit a family in Alford Forest and found a man, his wife, and seven children “all down with influenza”.

As influenza sufferers became well again, there were complaints that “several persons recovering from influenza were walking about the streets, freely intermingling with the public, and going in and out the shops”.

The Guardian made sure to remind the public that “a severe penalty is attached to anyone suffering from influenza appear-

Anzac Day Despite the trials faced by Kiwis over the course of the war, and the harrowing influenza epidemic months prior, Anzac Day 1919 in Ashburton was surprisingly normal according to the Guardian.

Bunting was flown across town, flags were displayed, and a commemorative service at St Stephen’s church was followed by a procession and ceremony at the domain.

Several columns were published on the 25th and 26th of April detailing the addresses made during Ashburton’s Anzac Day celebrations, during which there was not one single mention of the influenza epidemic.

This is a no-brainer perhaps; Anzac Day is focused on remembering our fallen soldiers after all, but you would think that

even a passing reference to the Spanish Flu would have been made at least informally.

We can only read between the lines and try to gauge feeling – perhaps it was deemed inappropriate to divert attention away from the theme of remembrance for the Anzac troops, or the influenza outbreak was too recent and painful to acknowledge.

Nevertheless Ashburton took pride in its Anzac celebrations and at least we made a solid effort, as it was reported in the papers that celebrations in Wellington were “half-hearted” due to the day having fallen so close to the Easter holidays.

In Sydney, where influenza was still taking its toll, no demonstrations were permitted for the celebration of Anzac Day. Anzac Day 2020 fell during the nationwide lockdown of course, and so this year we are much more mindful of the occasion –

not to mention grateful that we can gather in public.

We can also be grateful of the fact that we did not face the hardships our forebears did during the 1918 pandemic, during which somewhere between a third and half of the New Zealand population were infected.

One of Mid Canterbury’s fastest-growing sports has taken another step forward.

Pickleball, which was introduced to the district just a few years ago, has been on an upward trajectory from the moment it began and earlier this week, the sport welcomed its first-ever seasonal tournament.

The Autumn tournament, which will run over the course of five-weeks on a Tuesday night, sees 16 of the top pickleball players in Mid Canterbury competing

against each other in the search to be crowned champion.

“These mini local tournament events are intended to prepare our players and teams for bigger national events where Mid Canterbury can be very well represented,” Pickleball Ashburton organiser, Ruben Garcia said.

And those national events are firmly in the target line for a number of local players.

In May, 14 local players will trek to the North Island to compete at Albany in a national event, while later in the year the Mid Canterbury Winter Classic will be held – a national tournament that attracts the top play-

Introduced in 2019, pickleball is played at the EA Networks Centre on four occasions during the week. Two-hour sessions are available on Sunday and Tuesday evenings from 5pm until 7pm.

Bendibus gaining rave reviews

A seven-month project on the Ashburton Mountain Bike Loop is gaining rave reviews from users.

Dubbed Bendibus, the extension to the already impressive piece of real estate was completed recently after many hours of hard work by Mountain Bike Ashburton club members, volunteers and supporters which began back in October last year.

And for Mountain Bike Ashburton president, James Reid – it’s everything he’d hoped for.

“It is, it really is,” he said.

“You have a vision for these sorts of things and hope that they come off but as has been the case with a lot of the projects we’ve done, the support that’s come in has meant it’s become even more than I think we’d hoped it would be.”

The slice of track works its way through a large area of trees behind the industrial estate and the 700-metre-long

section is now a firm fixture on the 11.5 kilometre-long loop.

But Reid said it couldn’t have been done without community help.

And it came from all corners.

“The project was supported

by ECan, Trail Fund, ACL, the Shearer Family, Lovett Family Farms, Rooney Earthmoving and Hireworx.

“We first had the track area cleared with a tractor that mowed through the blackberry then we formed the shape with a small digger.

“The track was then capped with a clay surface to make it faster and smoother.

“We finished off by building two optional easy and hard lines, one with a steep drop and the other with large rocks to ride over.”

Reid said that the initial feedback on the new section of the loop had been fantastic, and competitors were looking forward to getting a chance to use it next week when they club holds it’s annual Six Hour Race.

“We’ve had some great comments by riders, a lot of people had been out using the track and saw what we were doing so were quite keen to get on it and see what it was all about as soon as we’d finished, which was great.”

Reid said the decision to create Bendibus was a desire to spice things up a little on the loop, and also to meet the requirements that are being put in place which want to see the bike track separated from the walking track.

Plans are already in place for the next project which will begin shortly and that’s to extend the track from the skills park up to State Highway One and then next year it will be on from State Highway One down to Trevors Road.

And you can bet, judging by the amount of community support that’s been given to every project undertaken by the group thus far that there will be plenty of people ready to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in again.

Futsal titles go down to the wire

The footprint the sport of futsal is making on Mid Canterbury continues to expand.

This week, two local competitions came to a close as players begin preparation for switching to the outdoor version of the sport, football – with both the Mid Canterbury United Premier

League and Mid Canterbury United Social League tournaments completed.

Mid Canterbury Football’s development officer, Darren Cavill said both events were enjoyed by all.

“The competitions ran really well with a lot of effort being put in by Jordy from the EA Networks Centre,” Cavill said.

“He worked around a hectic schedule as winter sports were

starting to get under way.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy it though and both competitions seem to be getting more and more competitive each term.”

In the social grade, the MC Mean Teens emerged victorious.

Made up of a group of 15th grade footballers, the side were the dominant force through the season and deserving title winners.

The Premier Futsal League Left – Old School FC and Greener Grazing United who battled out the final of Mid Canterbury United’s Premier Futsal League.

Combined comp heats up early

By this evening, only three rounds of the Combined Country Rugby competition will have been completed, but by then it could also be a case of sink or swim for many teams in the competition.

The shortened nature of pool play in this year’s competition – with North Canterbury breaking out into their own pool for the regular season – has put the pressure on sides to front up week in and week out, and with only four rounds until the playoffs after today’s round – it’s almost crunch time already.

In Pool A, which features both Rakaia and Hampstead it’s already quite clear that the race for the top five spots will end up being tight.

So, today’s matches for both sides are all-important, with one win each from their two games thus far.

With a bye week looming next weekend, Hampstead will be keen to build on their great win last weekend over Hornby, in which they kept their opposition scoreless, when they take on Springston on the other side of the Rakaia River this afternoon.

Springston lead the pool with two wins and were too good for Rakaia last week, but the challenge will have been laid down

After an extensive pre-season, the Matt Winter and Danny Hurley-coached side were ready for last week’s assignment, and the challenge will be building on that again today, with captains Hamish Finnie and Nathan McCloy expected to set the tone for the match.

Bowlers up for historic Rosebowl

One of indoor bowls longest standing trophies went on the line on Thursday night.

The Methven Rosebowl has been competed for since its inception in 1960 and while it’s faced a number of challenges over its years, it’s still a permanent fixture on the indoor bowls season calendar.

“It’s been played pretty much every year since it first started, but there has been a couple of times when we haven’t been able to hold it because of player numbers and then last year because of Covid-19,” Methven Indoor Bowling Club’s Martin Nordqvist said.

Traditionally played in the Mt Hutt War Memorial Hall during the weekend, the tournament was shifted to the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Stadium on McNally Street and became a Thursday night event in a hope to attract more entries.

On Thursday night, 12 teams took to the mats for the fours competition which was played over four rounds. No team was able to walk off at the end of the night with four wins next to their name, but one team did make it through unbeaten.

Simon Thomas, Matt Markham, Tom Palatchie and Richard Sharpe drew their first game of the night and then went on to win their next three matches which was enough to see them home with 84 competition points. 20 points were awarded for a win, 10 points for a draw and one point for each end won during the night.

They finished nine points clear of the runners-up, Murray Bassett, Graeme Chapman, Julie Thomas and John Gibbs on 75 points.

REP TEAMS Ashburton Indoor Bowls selectors have named their first representative sides for the season. In new formats, some traditional rep fixtures have been wiped from the calendar and others adjusted to better suit the current playing numbers.

OPINION

Google, is greyhound racing cruel?

oogle, is greyhound racing cruel?

Yes, Matthew.

Greyhounds endure lives of confinement, are subject to standard practices that are cruel and suffer injuries and even death, greyhounds used for racing are kept in cages, barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around, for up to 23 hours per day.

Hold on wait, what?

Never did I think a search engine question would produce such an answer.

But it did, and here encapsulates a serious problem that the sport faces in New Zealand.

Misconception, misinformation and generally only one side of the story.

Last week Racing Minister Grant Robertson announced a national review into the greyhound racing industry.

His message was succinct –

show sufficient ground is being made in animal welfare standards and we’ll be ok, but if I’m not happy then expect some more fundamental questions to be asked about the future of the sport in this country.

Shape up or ship out kind of stuff, isn’t it?

Mounting pressure has been forming around the country to put an end to the sport and follow in line with some Australian states and other countries

around the world. And when you get a result like that from a simple Google search, is it really any surprise? People read that, form an opinion based off the answer and don’t really want to hear anymore.

There’s no doubt the industry needed to tidy up its act.

For years, it’s been getting away with some well outdated practices and scraping by the skin of its teeth.

But there’s been huge progress.

Trainers are a lot more thoughtful of the future of their dogs once they’ve finished racing, or if they don’t make the grade.

The training establishments I’ve been to feature none of the things mentioned in that Google search result.

In fact, the dogs are given wide open spaces in which to roam and run free. They can certainly stand up, and they can certainly run. They’re well fed, well looked after, and well cared for by people not only passionate about the industry, but also people who are passionate about the dog itself.

Activist groups make a lot of noise and that’s good.

Anything that challenges something to be better and lift their standards is a positive move in my books, provided it’s fair and balanced with both sides of the story portrayed.

Sadly, with many it’s not and the image created is one of a very small minority who others are ready to eject from their

Vermont out to answer some big questions

Whether it’s today at Riccarton, or at some point in the near future Ashburton trainers Matt and Sarah Smith are hoping it will happen with the bonny grey mare who has shown them plenty of potential, but at times flattered to deceive.

But hope isn’t lost, and the young Ashburton training duo are hoping a step up in distance and eventually some softer ground underneath might be the key to seeing the six-year-old show her true worth.

“When she came down to us and won her first race, we thought she was going to be a really nice horse,” Matt Smith said.

“But through a whole heap of different factors, she’s never really lived up to that which has been a little bit frustrating, and she’s really got to start showing us something soon.”

Today might be soon enough with the mare taking on a good field of Rating 74 and high runners on a big day Riccarton, stepping up to 2500 metres for the first time in her career.

“She’s a bit of a rolling type, but to be honest it’s a pretty rich field so we’re not super confident.

“That being said, if she can roll into it without any checks or interference, I’d hope she’ll be running on strongly at the finish.

“She’s not the sort of horse who can just come off the back of one and show a really sharp turn of foot, she needs to be out in clear air and allowed to build up her speed.”

That will be the challenge for Corey Campbell today with the mare especially against a full field of horses over the long distance.

Vermont is the only charge racing today

Locals out to lead the way

It might be the locals who have the most to say on the final day of grass track racing in New Zealand for the season at Methven on Monday.

The small but select programme is set to cater for the lower grade horses, as the industry farewells another bumper few months of racing on the green surfaces, especially around the Canterbury region.

And local knowledge could be a key pointer for punters out to make a dollar before racing sticks firmly to the all-weather over the winter months.

Strong chances rest with local hopes throughout the programme, and like the last meeting, Leo O’Reilly could be a driver worth following throughout the programme. He’s got four strong chances on the card including his own maiden pacer, Maren Franco, who was excellent running third on debut on the Methven track earlier in the month.

Also in the money at that meeting were the Dan Reardon pair of Alene and Daggy Lamb, who both ran second, and O’Reilly will reunite with the duo who both look strong chances in their respective races.

O’Reilly’s fourth drive is the in-form trotting mare, Some Time for Lynn and Justin Smith. She’s yet to win on the Methven course in five starts, but is in a rich vein of form currently and a bold run wouldn’t surprise.

Other big local hopes during the day start early with the Rebecca Headstrained Jay Bee And Lou and the Michael Heenan-trained Latina Hall good chances in the first race, the maiden trot, while the Neil Burton-trained President Pat might be the blowout in the last race of the day after a good run last time out.

Racing kicks off on Monday at 12.04 with the last race run and won shortly after 3.45pm.

Manawatu’s b-i-g back O

n a sun-splashed Saturday morning, I joined the hordes of local weekend warriors striking out on the region’s signature Te Apiti-Manawatu Gorge walking trails. Landslips forced the permanent closure of the gorge road over three years ago and the new highway route is currently being constructed over the Ruahine Range.

With the rumble of vehicle traffic permanently silenced from the gorge, it’s the cacophony of birdsong that soundtracked my stroll, with tui, fantails and kereru thriving in the bush-draped gorge, coursing through the Rauhine and Tararua Ranges.

The mighty Manawatu is unique among New Zealand rivers in that it crosses a mountain range, with its headwaters lying close to Norsewood on the eastern slopes of the Ruahines.

I made a beeline for the Manawatu Gorge Loop track, an easy stroll of 1.2km through native bush.

Branching off it is the longer Tawa Loop Track, which is deliciously good. Set aside 2 hours to knock off this 4km-long route, which follows a steady gradient and is steep in places. Your huffing and puffing will be handsomely rewarded with a heart-stealing view across the sinuous curves of the bush-wrapped gorge.

Keep an eye out for Whatonga, a stirring 6m-high steel sculpture of the Rangitane chief who captained the Kurahaupo waka when it landed 800 years ago. Eight Maori-inspired information panels also tell the story of the region’s Maori heritage and culture. I adored the rich array of native plants, headlined by the soothing nikau groves and red flowering rata. It’s a banger of a walk.

If you’re up for another challenging leg-stretcher, head north for an hour and strike out on the Rangiwahia Track. This iconic 4km-long trail starts from Renfrew Road, rambling through red beech forest to the open tussock tops of the Ruahine Range.

Crowning the western horizon, I found myself swooning over the views of the snow-topped clarity of Mount Ruapehu. Running from Mangaweka to Ashurst, take a drive along the Manawatu Scenic Route, a dedicated touring circuit that accentuates the beauty and charm of the backcountry, threading together a necklace of scenic gems, rolling farmland, hidden valleys and charismatic settlements.

Soak up the scenery at the Ruahine Dress Circle lookout. Early settlers were so inspired by the curved

papa cliffs, they nicknamed it the dress circle, because it reminded them of the dress circle in an opera house.

The Apiti Lavender Farm is a beloved small venture run by Helma Hughes offering the opportunity to picnic amidst the fragrant mosaic of more than 3000 purple plants.

The little onsite shop also sells lavender products – candles, soaps and bottles of lavender hydrosol – a byproduct of the oil distilling process – that will make your laundry smell fantastic.

Another local landmark is the Apiti Tavern, a charismatic country pub with an excellent beer garden, tasty fare and welcoming hospitality.

Heading through the picturesque Pohangina Valley, you’ll be treated to an ever-changing landscape of lush green valleys, stony river terraces and the imperious backdrop of the Ruahine Ranges. I enjoyed a hearty graze from the café, where the menu is centred around local, free range and organic produce incorporating fresh herbs from their gardens. You can’t go wrong with their sweet brioche French toast, free range bacon and grilled banana served with berry couli and natural yoghurt, topped with candied walnuts. Bliss!

From Ashurst, it’s a very short hop up the Saddle Road to the Te Apiti windfarm lookout. The sheer size and height of these 55 turbines is astounding.

Boasting 700 acres of farmland in Apiti, Makoura Lodge is a fabulous country luxury lodge, wrapped in natural splendour. Panoramic views greet you at every turn across the Ruahine Ranges, gullies and native

bush.

The range of onsite team building activities is impressive spanning 4WD training, horse trekking and claybird shooting.

Owned by Hugh and Kimberley McIntyre, the property has been a going concern for the McIntyre family since 1896.

The lodge itself was built in 1998, with as many local materials as possible. It features macrocarpa timber, milled from the property, and rocks out of the nearby Coal Creek River for stone work.

As an experienced grader operator, you will play a key role in our ‘Done Right’ approach to maintenance grading. You will be responsible for preparing and operating machinery to a high standard while completing the required maintenance on time. You will be fit, healthy and commit to being a punctual and honest team player who will help deliver the right outcome the first time round using modern fit for purpose machinery to get the grading Done Right.

The general public is to be advised that a New Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted in the Lake Coleridge area on the 29 May 21 and over the period 5 – 11 May 2021.

The exercise will involve up to 50 New Zealand Defence Force personnel of Alpha Company 2/1 Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment from Burnham Military Camp.

Training will involve soldiers working in Small teams Carrying standard issued weapons, performing Basic Military Exercises, Boating on and working around the Lake Coleridge area.

Blank rounds will be used from 9am until 5pm.

The exercise will also involve the movement of troops and vehicles by day and night.

The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously and will ensure fire mitigation is present.
