Lincoln’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Edwards said the news was distressing for the university. In November, the university’s Ashley Dene Research and Development Station (ADRDS) and the Lincoln University Research Dairy Farm (LURDF) were confirmed as having M. bovis following a detect result from the September Bulk Tank Milk screening and placed under a Restrictive Place legal notice under the Biosecurity Act 1993.

Lincoln University’s dairy farm at the Ashley Dene Research Development Station is on a Restricted Place notice as shown o Ashley Dene, 15km west of the Lincoln campus, was largely a dryland research farm for 100 years until more than half of it was converted to an irrigated dairy farm for the 2016-17 season. The dairy farm on Bethels Road, near Springston, has a herd of 450 to 500 cows on 190 hectares. Its purpose is to conduct farm systems research to improve the profitability and environmental and welfare performance of dairy and livestock farming systems. Converted from arable to

The herd was undergoing testing. “All of our tests to date have been clear. We have one more blood test,” Savage said. The farm, known for its high performing herd, attracts hundreds of people a year, but the restrictions meant it was closed to visitors.

The next LUDF field day, scheduled for February, is planned to go ahead at a different venue, possibly Mid Canterbury. Edwards said that under the guidance of the M. bovis eradication programme the university was in the process of depopulating, decontaminating, and restocking Ashley Dene and LURDF. “Due to the specialised objectives of the research dairy farms, care is being taken to minimise any potential impact on current or

164,661 cattle have been culled and $189.1 million paid in compensation to farmers in a national bid to eradicate the disease. Nationally, 250 farms have been cleared of the disease. When the Ashley Dene dairy farm was established, Edwards said the farm’s size allowed research at a larger farm systems scale than the research dairy farm. The lighter soils at Ashley Dene were also relevant for Canterbury dairy farms, since many of the

region’s dairy farms were on the same kind of soils. The ability to integrate both the wintering and support systems in the research station meant research would also be applicable to dairy support operators. A feature of the farm is a large stand-off pad able to be divided to research different options, such as the suitability of various surfaces. A large concrete feed pad is similarly divided into fenced bays to allow controlled feeding of different types of fodder. A teddy bear for every occasion By Malcolm Hopwood Andrew Brown has probably more teddy bears in Mid Canterbury than anyone else and he loves giving them away. He’s been doing it for years and this week he presented a dozen to the S.E.E.D.S Programme which matches volunteers with families who need help with parenting and home-skilling. It’s the first presentation Andrew has made in 2021 and he’s planning many more as the year progresses. “I get a lot of satisfaction seeing teddies going to good recipients and helping kids,” Andrew says. “I recall a child coming out of Ashburton Hospital clutching one of my teddies and appreciating the gift. It meant so much.” Andrew, as well as being a semi-retired arable farmer, is a member of the Ashburton Masonic Lodge 1811 and the idea for Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) originated with Freemasons in England. TLC was launched in Essex 20 years ago and has been adopted by Freemasons across the UK and then spread around the world, including New Zealand. In all two million have been distributed worldwide with over 34,000 given to children in New Zealand. Recently teddies have gone further than our shores. During the measles epidemic in Samoa, 500 teddies were shipped there with a further 800 sent to Fiji for use in the CWM Hospital in Suva. The TLC Appeal is administered in Auckland with Andrew being its contact in Mid Canterbury. “It’s one of Masonic Lodge’s programmes to help the community,” Andrew explains. While many of Andrew’s teddies go to Ashburton Hospital, he explains that not every child visiting the Emergency Department gets one. Medical staff use their discretion and will give a bear to a child that is suffering particularly from trauma, injury or illness. The teddies are used to befriend the children, to reward them for being brave and, in some cases, to demonstrate what they are going to do. The co-ordinator for the S.E.E.D.S Programme in Ashburton, Marie McNulty, is delighted to receive the bears. “At the moment our volunteers are working with 12 to 14 families and 30 children,” she says. “They don’t have much and they’ll love the teddies. Sometimes it’s the only gift they’ll receive over the holiday period, so it will be very special.” Marie explains that a bear means a lot to the parents as they don’t have to worry about purchasing gifts for children themselves.

For Ashburton man Andrew Brown, giving away teddy bears to those in need is something he takes great pleasure in and S.E.E.D.S Programme co-ordinator Marie McNulty is more than grateful to receive them.

Jack Maybury – a deeper look By Malcolm Hopwood If ever there was an Ashburton Hall of Fame then the late radio host, Jack Maybury, would be one of the first recipients. Following publicity about Jack’s origins in Mid Canterbury, his son, Vaughan, contacted the Ashburton Guardian offering more evidence. Vaughan, who lives in Otaki, north of Wellington, believes Jack was dux of Borough School, Ashburton. Born at Hinds, according to another family member, Jack was an academic achiever and talented musician, playing in the Ashburton Silver Band and the 1st Canterbury Mounted Rifles Band from the age of 11. He was a multi-instrumentalist, playing trumpet, saxophone and trombone. Jack’s dad, Ernest, decided electricity was the “coming thing” and persuaded Jack to become a wireman. But he hated it and left claiming “that’s the last dirty attic I’m going into”. Instead he joined radio. During World War Two, Jack applied to join the army, but the authorities had other ideas. He was far more valuable being the Bob Hope of his day raising morale. “More than any other person, he raised money for patriotic funds,” Vaughan says. He managed the South Island Band Wagon as part of the government’s Liberty Loans programme. Its target was four million pounds and its initiative included a fundraiser organised by the Ashburton Savage Club. On VJ Day, Christchurch crowds gathered around 3ZB, where Jack was a popular radio host, chanting “we want Jacko”. Jack responded and led the crowd in a march around Cathedral Square. Jack was a popular figure and achieved New Zealand-wide fame when he hosted the Quiz Kids on National Radio. Australia beckoned and he moved there to host radio programmes for Atlantic Oil. Back in New Zealand, at the height of his career, Jack created three radio programmes, Number Please, Scoop the Pool and 64 Hundred Questions. Thousands listened to him as he toured the country presenting his programme and raising money for charitable causes. Radio reigned supreme and it was those early evening shows where families cleared the dishes and sat around the wireless listening to Jacko, assisted by his wife, Dorothy Jean Maybury.

“Jack arranged the content, itinerary, recorded the shows, edited them and delivered the finished product for broadcast,” Vaughan recalls. He died from pancreatic cancer on September 17, 1960, after a three-month illness. Jack was only 55. In a letter to Dorothy Jean, Prime Minister, Walter Nash, said “his wit and natural courtesy, has probably brought more joy and happiness to the people of New Zealand than any other single man”. “You with Jack have had probably one of the most interesting careers that is possible for a husband and wife to have together.” A memorial plaque to Jack was installed in the Rose Gardens at Linwood in Christchurch. With a career like Jack’s, Vaughan supports Ashburton paying tribute to one of its great sons.

Home detention after attack An Ashburton man has been sentenced after it was alleged he threatened his wife with a knife. Motekiai Ulupano appeared in the Ashburton District Court on Friday before Judge Tom Gilbert on a charge of assault with intention to use a weapon. It was alleged the man assaulted his wife on June 23.

It was also alleged an altercation between the couple ensued after Ulupano returned home after drinking that afternoon. The court heard his wife was upset that he had not “helped with the kids” that day. It was alleged Ulupano then pushed her into a bathroom wall, grabbed her

hair and dragged her into the bedroom. The exchange moved to the kitchen where the man grabbed a skinning knife, forcing the woman against a wall before threatening to cut her. The court heard that the man was previously convicted in 2017 for assaulting his wife. Ulupano’s lawyer told the court that

he had engaged with the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADS) and that he had been assisting with care of his four children. “It is time for the family to start rebuilding,” Judge Gilbert said. Ulupano was sentenced to six months’ home detention and ordered to complete a Stopping Violence course.

With a potential rate increase of 8.27 per cent on the board, Ashburton’s district councillors found themselves hard-pushed to find costs to cut when they started discussions on next year’s budget. The hefty rate increase comes on the back of this year’s Covid-19 driven reduction in spending that saw the planned rate rise of 4.88 per cent cut to just 2.56 per cent. But while the reduction saved ratepayers cash, the work council planned has remained on its books and 2021/2022 is looming as payback year. Mayor Neil Brown told councillors it was their job to ensure they understood what was being spent and why. The budget might have been prepared by staff, but it was up to them to decide what spending should remain, what should be taken out

and what they wanted added. “But ultimately the budget is not the council’s budget, it is the community’s budget. When it’s developed it will go out to the community for their comment and they will want things put in or taken out,” he said. The budget would come back to the council table to finalise ready for sign-off on June 30. With a starting point of a rates requirement of $41.198 million and an increase of 8.27 per cent on the books, councillors were left looking for ways to cut spending and there were only two options – cutting costs or increasing borrowings, Brown said. Early options identified were the sale of some of the council’s 80 Glasgow Lease properties or tapping into the $73 million that is sitting in its forestry reserves account. While profits from the sale of more

Glasgow Lease properties than originally planned could carve more than 1 per cent off the rate rise, selling off the district’s silver did not sit well with some councillors. Neither did eroding the forestry account. “Yes, we could sell some leased properties to reduce rates, but we need to be careful. If we can’t afford an 8 per cent rate rise, we’re living beyond our means,” Brown said. Council chief executive Hamish Riach reminded them they had made no provision for the future of the Balmoral Hall. It needed maintenance and renovation if it was to remain in use as a hire venue and those costs needed to be part of its budget over the next few years, he said. The hall might be well used, but the rental income fell well short of the cost of its upgrading, estimated to be around $500,000. Rather than an upgrade the other option would be for the hall to be demolished and the site used for CBD parking. The hall was

one of the site options for the district’s new civic centre and library and it is on the list of properties the council will consider selling as part of its $13 million contribution towards the cost of the new Baring Square east complex. Budget discuss i o n s continue on Thursday.

The Carew Peel Forest School Pool is on track for an upgrade.

Donation set to invigorate combined school pool The children of Carew Peel Forest School will get the chance to cool off during the summer months thanks to Anzco Foods’ Sponsor a School Programme. Anzco Foods has donated more than $1.1 million to rural schools since 2011 through the programme. This year more than $109,000 has been donated to rural schools throughout New Zealand, including local school Carew Peel Forest which received $4439. The donation, which is raised through a partnership supply agreement with local farmers, has been used to help get the school’s pool upgrade under way.

In 1943, the Carew community came together and built a swimming pool using water races and community skills. Ownership of the pool subsequently passed over to Carew Peel Forest School, however, community involvement remains as strong as ever and they all came together to advocate for the refurbishment of the pool. Sharron Ketter, principal of Carew Peel Forest School said the pool was a vital resource to the community. “Waterways, dams and rivers are abundant in our community so it’s vital all our children know how to swim,” she said.

“The pool, which is open to the community outside school hours via a key system, is the perfect place for families and friends to congregate during the summer months, keeping that sense of community alive. “When our school receives donations, it supports us to get the extras that help provide the rich curriculum that we deliver. “Our children are very fortunate to have so many opportunities unique to our rural school. “Government funding for schools only goes so far and we are fortunate to have such a supportive community that we can keep our ‘extras’ going.

“A huge thanks to the farming families who enable Anzco to support schools.” Shannon Parnham, head of livestock at Anzco Foods, said that the business continues to be overwhelmed by the positive community feedback from dairy farmers and rural schools making the Sponsor a School Programme even more rewarding. “The scheme is a fantastic opportunity to put funds back into rural communities and support young people in our regions,” Parnham said. “We’re always looking for more farmers to register for the programme as the greater the sup-

port we get, the higher our donation. “This is a company donation from Anzco – there is no cost to participating farmers. “In less than 10 years, more than $1 million has been poured into our rural schools across New Zealand through Anzco’s Sponsor a School Programme. “This has helped to provide schools and their students with sports equipment, learning resources, computers, swimming pools, building maintenance and much more. “We are really proud of this contribution to our communities.”

The demise of local club cricket By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

t’s not that long ago that the cricketing pitches of this district were alive with activity on a Saturday afternoon, where teams plied their trade against rival clubs in competitions rich with history and prestige. Many people will remember the heydays of the local cricketing scene. Big numbers of players, prospering clubs and a real desire to go out each week and put a good effort on the paddock in the hope of bringing a victory for your club and team. It was almost a rite of passage to be a part of a cricket club – much in the same way it still is to be part of the local rugby club – but that next generation of players are missing out on something really special and the hardest part is that they most likely don’t even know it. A trip out to Coldstream on a Saturday morning for a day of play was special, likewise taking a look at the photos on the wall of some of the great players from our district at other clubrooms around the district. Now the focus has turned, and we have none of that any more. No Saturday afternoon senior cricketing competition, no supporting grades made up of the next wave of players and those still keen to play, but perhaps getting a little long in the tooth to play the elite local level. So much is pumped into the school game now – and that’s great. The opportunities that are presented to younger players are plentiful and far better than they have ever been. Sure, those players might still be able to step out for Mid Canterbury and bash a century like young Devon Flannery did at the weekend. But without doubt, it’s come at a cost to the game at a local level. And the even sadder part is that we’re staring down the barrel of enough time passing that some of those great cricketing clubs of our district over so many years will never return – instead become destined for conversations over a bar leaner on a Friday night as those who are fortunate enough to do so, remember fondly.

YOUR VIEW Thank you EA Networks As many of us experienced Tuesday, a power outage is a frustration. It is a problem as a cinema owner, when it is the school holidays and you have customers waiting for their movie to start, with no power.

We had the decision to be made of sitting around, waiting, hoping that normal service would resume – or cancel the screening. I phoned EA Networks in the hope I could get some more information to assist in that decision, but little was available. Normal service was quickly reinstated and we were able to commence screening.

Bullying in the hood

have been amazed at the number of recent cases I have had in my office concerning bullying, from kids, to teenagers to adults; from public shaming and attacks to cyber-bullying. What are we doing? Yes, I get it kids have a tendency to bully in the playground. And as for the adults, didn’t they leave the playground years ago? It’s the way it is happening that is simply shocking. How are 10year-olds getting to set up social media accounts to bully other kids in the most vulgar way? Giving children free access to all of the internet is like giving your child a loaded gun and sending them out to the park to play with their mates. You just wouldn’t do that. But as we leave them alone in their bedrooms for a few hours with their phones or tablets … that is exactly what we are doing. We are letting them travel to the middle of the internet with zero guidance or boundaries. You wouldn’t leave them alone in the middle of New York City and trust they will be okay? How is unguided internet use any different? Then I hear of adults planning attacks on people via social media, setting people up for a bashing? What the hell? What is the quality of the behaviour? Where is the personal ownership? This is gang warfare in small communities with regular people. This is our district. Our home. Have we not been through enough (earthquakes, terror attacks, Covid-19) to know that

we actually need each other? We need to support and play our part in making things work for everyone. Resorting to childish bullying behaviour is so primitive and it teaches our children nothing. Putting someone down is the LOWEST level of self-esteem to be had. If you need to crush another person to feel superior, what is that saying about the quality of person you are? High self-esteem comes from the willingness to support those around you and making sure everyone wins. High self-esteem leads to growth. Bullying, in any form, is oneupmanship at its worst. No one actually wins. You are making the other person suffer and you suffer because your actions set out what kind of person you are. Lose-Lose. I have been stunned to hear how some schools and authorities shy away from addressing cyberbullying, because they feel there is little they can do. Yet they ask kids to come forward if they being bullied. Somewhat a mixed message, no? We cannot teach our children to think it’s okay to attack one another in such a horrendous way. We cannot show them that it is normal. It’s not normal and should not be brushed under the carpet and dismissed.

We are not going to get along with everyone, but if we create differences in order to feel superior then I think we have seriously missed so many incredible opportunities for growth and development. I wish I had a solution for the problem, I don’t. But I believe WE do. We create the community we live in and we are a force to making the community safe and healthy. The bully needs help to understand their behaviour is abnormal and corrosive to

themselves and to others. Think of bullying as an illness. It’s a sickness that needs to be addressed. The bully’s victim needs to know that they are sane and their reaction is normal. We need to ensure that children feel they can trust the adults to act on their behalf, not dismiss the behaviour because it’s too difficult to resolve. It will be difficult to resolve, but if we do nothing then the bullying-sickness remains. Anything done is better than no

action at all. Let’s open the conversation, let’s become accountable and let’s wipe it out. Sahera Laing is a mental fitness consultant, columnist and speaker. Mix flour, paprika and pepper in a larger plastic bag, then add chicken breasts and shake until well coated. Melt butter with avocado oil in a pan over a medium heat. ■■ Cook chicken breasts through until golden (around 7-8 minutes), then place in an ovenproof dish and cover with foil to keep warm in the oven.

■■ Drain pan and pour in chicken stock, bringing to boil over high heat and cook for 4-5 minutes. Stir in cream, bring to boil and cook for 2-3 minutes, until slightly thickened. Take avocado pieces from the lemon juice and stir in sauce for 1 minute. ■■ To serve, ladle sauce over chicken breasts, garnish with parsley, accompanied by any green vegetables and potatoes. The donation presented to us at our Jubilee has been spent in acquiring equipment for our learners and a member donated some tutorial books on Needle Felting. While the meeting was being held, a member replaced the wheels on our library cupboard as the old ones were getting too hard to move around with the weight of the books. Thank You Cheryl for proving girls can do anything if they put their minds to it!! Amongst other items planned for this year is a Workshop to be held at the Art Gallery on 6th/7th March with National Tutor Jenny Hart. Cost is $100 and it is a wonderful chance to come and learn how to spin from a very good and interesting tutor. Wheels and wool will be provided but bookings are necessary. 2nd March – another trip away to have a look at the Museum at Methven anthe Lace Museum at Geraldine - and of course check out the shops!!! Show and Tell followed. Members had been very busy over the holiday period making baby article, knitted and crochet, big and little ponchos, knitted adults jersey and childrens cardigans, felted pictures, owls and vases, woven teatowels in cotton and a new fibre and crochet rugs. One member had made ‘rubbing pads’ in pottery which she was selling - all proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House. The morning finished with all work in progress being highlighted.

A very busy week has passed going right back to last Monday the 11th, and the Sub-centre Over 60s triples at Allenton. It was played in a chilly wind, but the first 4 placed teams all contained members of Ashburton men and ladies. They were 1st D Prendergast, 2nd – G Crack, 3rd – J Kewish and A Gibbs, and 4th – A Gibson. On Monday 12th, we played the Ashburton ladies handicapped pairs. It was a lovely morning and after some very good bowling, our well-deserved winner is Heather Goodall. Congratulations Heather! Another very successful Friday Triples, sponsored by Toyota, was played on the 15th, with 2 full greens again, and on a very warm sunny afternoon. Summer bridge has been drawing good numbers over the holiday period. This deal from Thursday night was a challenge for the East/West defence as North/ South finish with a final contract of either 5 Clubs or 3 no trumps. Dealer, South opens with 1 club, west with no points passes, North responding with his heart suit, east showing the spades and when south strongly rebids the clubs, most norths raised to 5 clubs, but some chose to try 3 no trumps. In 5 clubs (11 tricks needed) played by South, west for his opening lead will choose the spade 4 from his doubleton holding, declarer now plays low from dummy and easts Spade Q wins the trick. Now what? If East’s Spade Q wins the trick. Now what? If East cashes his Spade A, followed by a third round of the suit, west will very happily take a rough. With the Heart A still to come from East South’s contract of 5 clubs is 2 tricks light. Should north be declarer in 3NT, East’s best lead is the Diamond Q – if he leads away from his spades, north is gifted 2 tricks. North must immediately look to set up the heart suit before playing any of the very solid clubs as he needs both the club A & J as sure entries to his own hand for the establishment of the Hearts, especially if East holds up his Heart A until the third round. When east chooses or is forced to take his heart A he must then cash his Spade A. If he fails to do so, he will not get the opportunity to play it at all as dummy’s spades will be discarded on the established Hearts and North will achieve 6 no trumps – 12 tricks. A beautiful Saturday at the Brandon led to a big field playing on the 2021 Club opening day.

Everyone was welcomed to the new season by Captain fantastic Terry and our wonderful evergreen Patron Bill Hetrick. The two trophies were hard fought. The AC Browne trophy for mixed pairs was picked up by Wendy and Eric Parr with a great score of 67. Bev Turton’s controversial decision to again, sit Pat on the bench and partner Nutts almost paid off, but they just missed out on countback. I think Pat may have earned a recall for the Harvey Norman classic. The Smith salver contested by mens pairs was won with a fantastic score of 64.5 by Dave Hewitt and Tufuga Sa. Well done to all who took part, the clubrooms were full of chat and laughter after the game. The 9-hole game was picked up by Dick Hansen, he snaffled himself a voucher from Harveys bakehouse. Matt Harvey and his gang are wonderful sponsors of many things around town, and the vouchers are always very welcome, especially by great pie connoisseurs like me. After golf, Hamish held the auction for the runners in the final of the Property brokers Shootout. What great fun, it seems that the overwhelming favourites and most sought after were Bev Chinn and Blair Snowball, the betting on these two was frantic. Not so for a certain Mr McKernan. After failing to draw any bids at all, Hamish had to sweeten the deal a bit, so he put up a $50 bar tab to go with the bid, so after much pulling of teeth Richard, along with a $50 bar tab was sold for $40. The plotting and planning for the first tee on Sunday morning has already begun. A few racers have been seen hitting buckets of balls off the tee, just to get one away. Left seems to be the favourite direction. All will unfold at 10 am Sunday, players report at 9.30 please. Come along, join in the fun, we will have a refreshments buggy following the game. The first hole takes about half an hour, and it should be getting down to the nitty gritty about 3.30pm. thanks again to Hamish, Karen and the Property Brokers gang. Before that on Saturday we have Mens Opening day playing for the Jim McKenzie trophy, normal start times. Coming up we have the Hydraulink Open 36-hole stroke, everyone welcome. President Joy welcomed 10 members & 1 visitors to our January meeting. As our Guest Speaker was unable to attend Cyril Keen spoke on the current situation with the Cherry Orchard in Central Otago. 3 years ago, the Orchard had their best season with income of $1.5 million but since then it has not been as good. This season with 70 ml of rain falling in a short time the bulk of the cherries all split and were ruined, they did try to sort some non-damaged fruit, but it wasn’t feasible, and the orchard was closed. Many people have asked why the split cherries can’t be used for jam etc but within 24 hours they start to rot. They were lucky as 2 weeks before the rain they were able to pack and send 100 ton overseas. For the small number of members, we have there was a great Table Show with some excellent blooms on display that could have all been nominated for Premier Bloom. To open the gathering of Creative Fibre members our Co-President told the story of muttering to herself because her craftwork wouldn’t go right when her husband queried her behaviour, she replied ‘when I’m crafting sometimes, I need expert advice!!’ All crafters can relate to that. The reports of the various end of year activities were given. The trip to Little River was interesting – as much for the windy roads, spectacular gardens and the catering involved. Having a Christmas lunch at the Hotel Ashburton was a great idea in a great venue, great food and plenty of parking. 2021 began with a morning tea at Mill House to catch up with each other and a past member who was here from the North Island. The theme for us this year is Soft Furnishings. With that in mind the Challenge for

Novel crop types trialled Trials of three novel crop types – buckwheat, soybean and quinoa – identified as having high potential have been undertaken in Canterbury. Four on-farm buckwheat trials, supported by Carrfields were initiated for a Japanese customer with exacting specifications for buckwheat noodles. Soybean lines were imported by Plant Research as part of its ongoing trials to identify the best soybean lines for New Zealand conditions. Quinoa trials also got under way, with Kiwi Quinoa looking to expand its grower base. These trial crops comprise three of the six “star” specialty grains and pulses identified by Our Land and Water research as having high potential for New Zealand farmers: soy, chickpeas, buckwheat, hemp, oats and quinoa. All have minimal environmental impacts (and in some cases benefit land and water) and can be included as part of mixed farming systems that includes animals. Connections with these food companies, farmers and seed importers were supported by research completed by the speciality grains and pulses workstream of Our Land and Water’s Next Generation Systems programme, led by Susan Goodfellow, director of Leftfield Innovation. Next Generation Systems aimed to support farmers to develop new farming systems and land use options that are feasible and practical in the eyes of rural communities, in response to intensifying demand to adapt to new market opportunities, technological innovations, regulatory limits and consumer demands. The researchers connected with farmers who were interest-

Thirteen farmers participated in multi-criteria decision-making interviews, a framework developed by Next Generation Systems researchers to explore the drivers and barriers for land use diversification. These interviews found the farmers generally considered financial factors more important than social, environmental and market factors, which were rated above regulatory and knowledge

factors. The research team reported that most farmers understand what can be grown, but find it challenging to fit the pieces of the value chain together, such as consumer demand and the availability of processing capability to transform raw materials into desired food products. Leftfield Innovation sought to connect market insights with these farmer insights. Speciality grains and pulses had previously been identified as a land-use opportunity of high interest to Central Plans Water farmers. Researchers gathered informa-

tion on a wide range of ancient and specialty grain and pulse crops and looked at the market to determine which grains and pulses were increasing in demand, had attributes consumers desired, and potential as ingredients in high-value snack food products. The resulting Specialty Grains and Pulses Report shortlisted six grain/pulse categories and identified further steps required for opportunities to be realised. This work provided assessment criteria that Leftfield Innovation drew on in work with Plant Research Ltd who evaluat-

ed 50 soybean seed varieties imported and grown for the Canterbury trial. Five soybean varieties were selected by Leftfield Innovation to fit their identified market and consumer expectations, and further trials will be planted by Plant Research over 2020–21. The report also supported Leftfield Innovation to communicate to farmers the exacting market specifications for buckwheat. The Japanese customer subsequently requested an increased tonnage of New Zealand-grown buckwheat to meet these standards in 2020–21.

Tomatoes among crops driving rise in prices RNZ The cost of fruit and vegetables rose nearly 9 per cent last year, driven by high prices for potatoes, courgettes and tomatoes. Stats NZ said the figures reflect tough growing conditions, international trade restrictions and in-

creased labour costs. The increase in prices brought overall food price inflation to 2.9 per cent for the year ended December. That’s higher than the most recent consumers price index inflation of just 1.4 per cent. It comes at a time when food

costs are under increasing scrutiny. In November, the government ordered the Commerce Commission to conduct a year-long inquiry into grocery prices. The main focus of the investigation will be the experience of the consumer, but it will also look at the way that supermarkets procure

Award winners to showcase farm improvements Canterbury supreme winners of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards, dairy farmers Tony Coltman and Dana Carver, are hosting a field day next week to show how they have reduced their environmental footprint while running a highly profitable farm. The couple are equity partners in Canlac Holdings near Dunsandel. The field day, delayed from last year because of Covid-19 restrictions, will be held on Wednesday, January 27 starting at 10am. Canlac Holdings was a high-performing farm when this couple took over in 2013 and their focus on good management practice means they have lifted it to another level. At the same time, there has been an impressive reduction in both the farm’s environmental footprint and nitrogen leaching. The couple entered the 2020 Ballance Farm Environment Awards to profile their sustainable business and demonstrate how farmers care for their environment. Operating under an equity partnership, Canlac Holdings is two farms being run as one business. Canlac Dairy has 1000 cows, while Quantum Dairy down the road runs 1150 cows. Overseeing 10 employees, Coltman is determined to show it’s possible to look after the environment while being profitable. The farm is bringing in high profits while cutting nitrogen

leaching by 48 per cent. The judges were impressed with the production and profitability, along with the significant drop in nutrient losses that are beyond regulatory limits. Stock health is a priority at Canlac, along with a strong focus on maximising the high-genetic herd through strategic breeding and the retention of first calvers. The judges commended Canlac’s strong business acumen and the large amount of recording and monitoring. The couple are keen to leave the farm in top condition for future generations and have planted plenty of shelter over the past two years, with plans to put in more plus native plants. They have significantly increased the effluent area, while the efficiency of the sophisticated irrigation system is continually being improved and they’re striving to maintain soil fertility. The couple have clear goals for both themselves and the health and wellbeing of staff, plus are heavily involved in off-farm activities. The judges praised Coltman’s involvement with the wider industry including being a Ruralco board member, and Carver’s interest in social wellbeing. A shot at redemption awaits Mid Canterbury galloper Dee And Gee following an emotion-charged victory in the Waikouaiti Cup at Wingatui on Saturday. In one of the most popular victories of the weekend, the dour seven-year-old dug in deep over the concluding stages to win – just days after trainer Peter Corbett’s late partner, Terill Charles was remembered at Riccarton. Charles and Corbett trained in partnership together on the edge of Mid Canterbury, but she sadly passed away before Christmas after battling brain cancer for more than five years. The pair combined in 2019 to win the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton, with Dee And Gee. So, there was plenty of sentiment before Saturday’s win, Corbett’s first since taking over the training of the team on his own. And now, the target is firmly locked on Trentham and the Wellington Cup at the end of this month – a race Dee And Gee has gone within a whisker of winning previously. “I have to go on that run,” Corbett said after the race. “She has got a bit of unfinished business up there.’’ Dee And Gee’s racing style has always been a survival of the fittest, and on Saturday it was no different with the mare taking the length of the Wingatui straight to run down her rivals and claim victory. And while the form line in recent times hasn’t quite shown the heights of previous seasons, Corbett wasn’t surprised. “That is her when she is right — when a horse gets beside her she seems to dig again,’’ Corbett said. “She has been beaten a couple of times when she has run out of ground. “That is what happened when she ran second in the Wellington Cup.

And Saturday was the acid test. “She had to show something, or she would have been retired. “She has been working the house down.”

The win on Saturday saw Dee And Gee sit seventh on the order of entry for the Wellington Cup on January 30, and the effort inspired bookmakers to react with an initial price of $81 at the beginning of the week finishing at $18 by the end of play on Saturday night. Corbett also has King Of The Dance nominated for the Trentham feature – but he sits a long way down the list on the order of entry. Saturday’s win was the seventh of Dee And Gee’s 47-start career and took her career stake earnings to over $400,000.

A family affair highlighted the double-success of Impact’s Legacy at the Blenheim Harness Racing Club’s twoday meeting on the weekend. The five-year-old mare was an impressive maiden winner on the first day on Friday, and then delivered in emphatic style up in grade on Sunday for trainer, Regan Todd and driver, Ricky May. For May, there was double the reason to celebrate, with the well-bred mare owned by family members and it continued a long line of success that the Methven horseman has had with the breed developed by the late Leicester Tatterson. Blazing Impact is raced by May’s sister, Mandy Hurst, her husband Tony and their children Jeff Hurst and Jackie Dwyer. The husband-and-wife duo also bred the mare. After beginning her career with Gerard O’Reilly at Rakaia, Blazing Impact was sent to Todd at Woodend Beach, and it’s all been impressive from there, with the beach-training really suiting the mare. She’s now picked two wins and three placings from just eight career starts with $17,500 in the bank. Blazing Impact is the fourth foal from Impact’s Legacy – a mare who won once from 11 starts for Laurence Hanrahan. Her grand-dam is Impact – an exceptional pacer from the Tatterson stable. Impact won eight, many with May sitting in the bike. As a broodmare she left the talented Valachi, who won twice from O’Reilly’s barn, and also Make N Impact who won seven when trained by Tatterson – again it was May sitting in the bike for the majority of her wins. The two winners for the weekend took May to 2978 career driving wins.

The Tech Stags’ destiny in the South Canterbury T20 competition will lie in their own hands this weekend after an up and down sort of day on Saturday south of the Rangitata River. The Stags trekked south for a double-header of the shortened format of the game while the two region’s representative sides battled it out in the Hawke Cup on the Ashburton Domain Oval. The day started well with a strong victory over Star at Ashbury Park. Winning the toss and electing to field first, the Stags managed to restrict Star to 107 all-out, with former rep player, Alex Hooper showing his class picking up 4-25 off his four overs. Matt Pawsey turned in a strong shift as well, picking up two wickets in his four-over spell. In reply at 27-2 after seven overs, the Stags had some work to

Tait did the most damage with the ball, taking 3-21 off his four overs while Jones also claimed two. Morrison moved to the top of the order for the second match but was unable to replicate his efforts in the first match, falling for a golden royal duck on the first ball of the Tech innings and a second wicket, that of Jones, in the same over had the Stags on the ropes. William McKee offered some hope for the side with the bat. When Callum Gallagher walked out to join him in the middle batting No.6, they were 15-4 after almost four overs. The pair tried to steady the ship and did a good job getting through to 69 before McKee’s wicket fell, after he con-

tributed 44 in a 20-ball innings which featured two fours and four sixes. When Hooper fell three balls later the damage had been done, and Tech were 69-6. Alex Veint bashed a couple over the ropes but fell for 13, and Pleasant Point cleaned up the tail without too many problems, ending the Tech innings in the 16th over with their score at 100. The ramifications of the weekend mean Tech will need to beat Temuka this weekend in Ashburton to assure themselves a spot in the semi-final stages of the competition, with a defeat meaning the calculators will be required to determine net run rate to decide the fourth spot. The semi-finals are set down for Thursday, January 28, with the finals played on the following Sunday. The top two qualifiers will play each other for a direct path into the final, while the loser of that match will play against the winner of the third and fourth playoff.

The Ashburton Bowling Club can boast having some of the best singles players in town after a winning double in the Lowry Cup and Nan Marsh Singles on the weekend. Brentton Donaldson claimed his second Lowry Cup title in stifling conditions in Methven, while Wendy Suttie swept all before her to win the Nan Marsh at Allenton. After a huge day of qualifying seven days earlier, both fields were worked down to the knockout stages, and five ladies made it through to the big dance in the Nan Marsh on the Allenton green. In an all-Ashburton match to open the day Barbara Skilling and Wendy Herriott did battle in the first round, with Skilling proving too strong for her club-mate, winning 21-15. That pushed the competition into its semi-final stage and Skilling squared off with Suttie while Hampstead’s Jo Collis and Ashburton’s Alison Gibbs battled it out in the other. Suttie and Skilling put together an impressive performance with the match finishing at 22-19 in a closely fought affair, while Collis booked herself a trip to the final with a win over Gibbs 21-9. In the final Suttie kicked into gear strong from the outset and built a steady lead, and eventually worked her way to the required 21 shots to win the title, 21-11. Up in Methven, 11 hopefuls started the day chasing glory, but the field was slowly whittled down to just Donaldson and clubmate, John Kewish to battle out the first-to-21 shots final in front of a decent sized crowd. The first round of the morning resulted in Allenton’s Mat Bassett winning a thriller over Methven’s Simon Fleetwood, while Allenton’s John Drayton did the same against Methven’s Rob Fensom. In the third match of the early morning – an all-Methven affair – Aaron Allred proved too strong for Matt Markham. That left a field of eight remaining. Donaldson began his quest with a 30end marathon against Allenton bowler Alex Crawford, with neither player giving in an inch in one of the matches of the day, while Drayton comfortably held off Allred. Kewish stepped into the fray with a good win against Bassett, and Richard Kane (Allenton) and Bruce Harper (Methven) fought out the other match with Kane claiming the spoils. The semi-finals were both comfortable affairs for Donaldson and Kewish. Donaldson was too good for Kane winning 21-13 while Kewish got the better of Drayton to win 21-8. In the final, Donaldson made a strong start and raced out to a big lead against his club-mate and never really looked back, relying on his impressive draw game to constantly score shots as he built up his tally to win 21-7. It was Donaldson’s second victory in the coveted singles event, having last won it in the 2017-2018 season. Meanwhile, in Christchurch a number of local names featured in the hugely popular Stuart Buttar Invitational Pairs at the world-class Burnside Bowling Club. The annual tournament features some of the biggest names in the sport and is always a must-compete for many every year. None of the three combinations featuring Mid Canterbury players made it to the finals on Sunday – but all three did put up strong efforts in an incredibly tough lineup of players.

Allenton’s Sandra Keith and Pete Whinham lost their first three games in the opening stages of the competition, but bounced back with two strong wins in the final two rounds. That pushed them into Division 3 where they picked up a win from the three matches but missed the finals. Up in Division Two, the Methven pairing of Craig Carter and Tim White also picked up two wins in qualifying and put themselves in with a shot at the finals but fell at the final hurdle, losing their third match in post section. Rodney Greaney also featured in Division Two alongside playing partner Ian Rule. They had a draw and a win from their three post section matches, but were unable to advance through to the next stage. The tournament was won by Matt Gallop and Isaac Denny who fended off the challenge of the internationally acclaimed Jo Edwards and Val Smith to win the final 10-8.

Bowling? Brilliant. Batting? Adequate. In the end, Allenton got the job done in their first outing of the year, beating Sefton by five wickets in Ashburton on Saturday. In a match where ball dominated the bat, a total of 52.5 overs was all that was required to settle proceedings after Sefton were ousted for 90. Looking to continue their pre-Christmas mode, which saw the North Canterbury club lift the silverware, it was all looking fairly rosy when Sefton won the toss and opted to bat. The Sefton openers negotiated the first five overs of the innings comfortably, however it splintered dramatically over the next 10 overs as they lost five wickets for 36 runs, to be dangling at 59/6. Number seven Tim Batchelor (23) hung in there for a few overs, the only batsman to make double figures. Once Aman Singh was bowled by Satwant Singh (3-9) at the other end, it was only a couple of overs for curtains to be drawn on Sefton’s innings at the end of the 26th. Although it appeared a regulation task for Allenton, the club’s batting had previously deteriorated with modest chases. Baabaas set to sizzle The Ashburton Barbarians scorched in the local heat as players held their first pre-season training on Saturday. The rugby league club’s first tune-up of the year at Havelock Street Park was welcome to all players, including beginners interested in playing league for the Mid Canterbury club. Another dose of final session fireworks gave Mid Canterbury’s cricketers another sniff of an outright win in the Hawke Cup at the weekend. The team were left to ruminate on several hypotheticals, as the clock snuffed out the prospect of maximum points as they came within two wickets of completing victory over South Canterbury at the Ashburton Oval. With that said, Mid Canterbury should be more than satisfied as they walked away with the first innings points off the back of a blazing knock from 16-year-old Devon Flannery. The AshColl pupil hit 134 – his maiden Cup hundred and the highest individual score in the zone this season – to guide Mid Canterbury to 226 on Saturday’s opening day. The youngster was in commanding touch on the Saturday as he steered the hosts out of early danger before taking to the South Canterbury attack during a 232 minute stay at the crease, which included 14 fours and four sixes. To say his knock was critical to the Mid Canterbury cause is self-evident and provided his team-mates something to bowl at. The visitors were resolute in response as they went to tea on the first day at 26/1 – their only setback coming when debutant Harry McMillan took a sharp chance at forward square leg off the bowling of Shaun Stagg. Mid Canterbury, however, exerted control late in the final session to complete the day on top. South Canterbury lost opener George Morgan leg-before after tea, as McMillan claimed his first Hawke Cup scalp, before Chris Hogan and Jacob Naylor added 53. A double strike by James Southby had both batsmen back in the dugout before Angus Jemmett had Sam Porter trapped in front as the visitors limped to stumps at 96/5, still trailing by 130. The prospects of a result ap-

peared to take a blow the next day, as rain followed by a wet outfield meant play did not get under way until about noon. Needing quick wickets, Mid Canterbury were able to strike twice in the 15 overs before lunch and again with Jemmett’s first over after the break, to leave South Canterbury eight down and 100 still behind. A 29-run ninth wicket stand – the visitors’ second highest of the innings – between Phil Lill and Mark Otley impeded the hosts slightly, but it was shortlived as the tail was mopped up. Although in the driver’s seat with a 57-run first innings lead, Mid Canterbury curiously balanced dangling the carrot enough for South Canterbury but leaving themselves enough time to bowl them out. Backing up his three-for with the ball, Jemmett led the way on second crack with 61 as the visitors made regular inroads to ensure the hosts did not dictate proceedings completely. Captain William Southby pulled the pin at 125/6, which left South Canterbury a target of 183 at just under 8 an over, and 23 overs for Mid Canterbury to pull off an unlikely win. South Canterbury were two down early before Sam Porter and captain Jacob Naylor upped the ante at close to a run-a-ball. Another two quick wickets left South Canterbury at 65/4, however their skipper continued to play positively as Mid Canterbury sent fielders to the boundary rope. When Naylor and Shaun Rooney were dismissed in consecutive overs to leave the visitors six down, plans to charge the total were aborted as the hosts circled – not unlike what occurred against Otago Country before Christmas. Mid Canterbury is now in a three-way share of the lead of Zone 4 alongside Otago Country and Southland ahead of its final match against North Otago in Oamaru this weekend. She’s all on in the Hawke Cup. At this stage with three matches to go and a three-way share of the lead, attempting to figure out the points ramifications in Zone 4 will send you into a tailspin. There is plenty of water to go under the bridge, however Mid Canterbury have every right to be optimistic as they travel to Oamaru for their final zone hitout against North Otago, who sit at the bottom of the standings, albeit with a game in hand. South Canterbury dropped down to fourth after the game at the weekend, despite being the only team to register an outright win in the 2020/21 window. Mid Canterbury, who have only narrowly come up short of the maximum allotment of points in both of their home matches, will be gunning for an outright win over North Otago at Centennial Park. A win would take them to 28 points, and leave them well placed. Otago Country host South Canterbury in Alexandra, and there should be uncertainty as to whether 20 wickets can be garnered by either team on that dusty Molyneux Park wicket. Rain is currently forecast for Alexandra on Saturday. Southland, meanwhile, face off with North Otago the following weekend at Queens Park. Knowing Invercargill’s climate, the weather may also throw the cat amongst the pigeons there, which may help Mid Canterbury’s cause. In the event of two top teams tied for the number of points earned, the team which earned the most points in the game between the two tied sides would be the winner. Got that? Should Mid Canterbury finish on top alongside Southland, then it would be the Southerners who would earn a Cup challenge, having secured the first innings points back in November. If all three finished tied for the lead, then it would come down to the best runs-per-wicket differential over the entire series. POINTS

Hands down a winner As is often the case, the back markers fared best in the tough rising windy conditions in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Wylie Family, 45km handicap event around the Christies Road block on Sunday. Carrying on from his recent success in the Club Championships, Steve Hands produced another strong ride to take the win in a bunch sprint with his co-markers. Hands’ efforts also saw him lift fastest time honours, covered the distance in 63.14. Kyle Grey continues to impress with a strong ride to secure second place and second time spoils. Tony Ward claimed the final podium position and in doing so took third time honours. Sam Clement-Stewart put in a solid ride to take fourth spot. John McIntosh and Rob Hooper rounded out the top half dozen. The juniors and division 2 contested a 18km handicap event. In a two-man sprint to the line, it was Ryan Gallagher who found a little bit extra to secure a great win from a gallant Jack Templeton. Both these two had ridden strongly from the middle marks to find the front and hold on strongly to stay away from the chasing riders. Daniel Gould had a great ride to take third place and fastest time honours, riding the course in 37.08. Tom Reid, James Reid, and Sarah Gould also put in a good days work to fill the top six spots. Kenny Johnston had his best race of the season to take division 2 honours and record the fastest time. Merv Grewar was back on the podium in second place. The Skinner duo of Debbie and Andy took third and fourth places respectively. Next week the club will travel to Methven to contest a 45km handicap event.

Williams getting back on track New Zealand cyclist Georgia Williams believes she is “fully recovered” from RED-S syndrome and ready to get back to being the rider she was three years ago. In 2018 Williams won both the time trial and road race titles at the national championships in Napier before claiming a silver medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. She retained her national time trial title 12 months later but then struggled in her third season with Mitchelton-Scott, now named Team BikeExchange. Williams, 27, was soon diagnosed with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) syndrome, a serious illness caused by not eating often food to support the amount of energy expended. “I’m pretty much fully recovered which is really cool,” Williams said. “I’m feeling much better, my energy’s good and I’m feeling good on the bike so that’s cool.” The key to her recovery was eating much more food, before, after and during rides. “Before I wasn’t really eating much on the bike, which was my main problem.

Georgia Williams “I’d maybe eat one bar or one banana for a three hour rider, but I’ve had to train my body to take on more food on the bike so it’s up to 30-40 grams of carbs at least an hour on the bike, which helps heaps. “It took a while for my body to get used to the fueling. Being an athlete and training for two to six hours a day you need to eat so much and I feel like I’ve finally got on top of it. “Last year I was half recovered, but I think I’m fully recovered now ... so I’m hoping to have a really good year.” Her 2021 season will start at the

national championships in Cambridge next month, rather than at this week’s Festival of Cycling in South Australia, which she was scheduled to ride in for Team BikeExchange. “The team put me on the start list, hoping that we’d have a New Zealand-Australian bubble,” Williams said. “We’ve got it one way, so I can get there, but obviously I can’t get back without another two weeks in quarantine which I really don’t want to do.” That is because it would mean Williams would miss nationals, which simply is not an option.

“Nationals is always pretty important so I’m going to make sure I’m here for that. “My team are understanding. They said ‘that’s fine, we understand and just stay home and do your nationals’. “I’m flying out back to Spain two days later so that’s a big goal for me for the start of the season.” Georgia Williams has been in New Zealand since the middle of November, avoiding the latest outbreak of coronavirus cases in Europe. “It’s so nice to be home for the summer and away from Covid.” A welcome change from daily life in Girona, Spain, where she is based during the World Tour season. “It’s totally different. “It’s a bit stressful really. Even just having to go to the supermarket. “It’s another world here and it’s super nice. “It took a while to adjust to not wearing a mask everyday, but so grateful to be back.” Once she is back in Europe, Williams will be focusing on the Ardennes classics early in the season and will ride in either the women’s Tour of Britain in June

or the Giro Rosa in July, but not the 2021 Tokyo Olympics that follow. “At the end of 2019 we were ranked I think 32 in the world, New Zealand was, and I think we had to be top 27 I think. “Unfortunately having the limited number of us women on the World Tour and getting results limited our points, which is really such a shame because I think we could’ve had a good team there. “There was talk they might reconsider because of Covid, but I haven’t heard any more information on that. “We would have probably qualified if the points went off last year.” That was because of the emergence of Mikayla Harvey and Niamh Fisher-Black in 2020. “It was just me for a while [on the World Tour], which makes it pretty hard when we want to race Olympic Games and world champs events when you don’t have enough points. “We’re getting there and it’s so awesome to see them doing so well and hopefully it inspires some more younger Kiwis to try and make the World Tour.”
