Silver Fern Farms will open a resource centre today to support some 370 displaced former workers from its defunct Fairton sheepmeat processing plant.

A large contingent of those people gathered at the Sinclair Centre in Ashburton yesterday, where Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton confirmed what they already knew; the plant was to be permanently closed.

They left clutching envelopes containing paperwork outlining their redundancy deals, set to cost the company some $10 million.

reason for the company’s decision to close the Fairton shed, Hamilton confirmed 230 jobs were available at Silver Fern’s Pareora, Belfast, Finegand and Hokitika operations.

Fairton workers with the “right skill set” would have priority over those jobs, Hamilton said.

A bus could be made available to transport workers who wished to remain in Ashburton to its plants in Pareora and Belfast.

Workers at the pelthouse have a stay of reprieve with no plans to close the department in the immediate future, Hamilton said. The pelthouse employs 17-23 workers and redundancy requests for those who have applied have been accepted at full rate.

Silver Fern Farms Fairton closure now confirmed From P1 Meatworkers Union Canterbury branch secretary Bill Watt said about 11 per cent of the processing staff were of retirement age or older and had been “hanging in” waiting for a redundancy offer to be tabled.

Watt said the union had been contacted by a number of companies within the Canterbury region offering work.

Redundancy payments will be settled by June 9, including holiday pay and any outstanding entitlements, he said.

Gary Strachan, who has clocked up almost 50 years at the Fairton shed, plans to “head down to the Rangitata to do some fishing for six months or so” before deciding on his next move.

Despite Hamilton’s assurances

that there will be no further plant closures in Silver Fern’s South Island stable this season, Strachan thinks the decision to shut shop at Fairton is “only the start” of the company’s rationalisation programme.

Dean Matheson has only worked at Fairton for seven months, after spending four years at Finegand.

He was not overly concerned by the closure; he already has a new job.

For others it was a sentimental day. Torika Waqasokolala, who has worked at the plant for a number of years, said people could now move on with their lives. There would be other opportunities but nothing would replicate the camaraderie she had enjoyed at Fairton.

“There won’t be anywhere else like Fairton,” she said.

Smoke but no fire at factory

Emergency services scrambled when a smoke alarm activated at Canterbury Dried Foods in the Wakanui district on Tuesday night.

Ashburton Voluntary Fire Brigade responded at about 8pm, dispatching all available trucks to the scene where it was establish a drier was emitting smoke, deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said.

“There was a lot of smoke – it was more awkward to deal with than anything, but it had potential to cause problems,” he said.

An appliance from the Methven station was called to provide cover for the Ashburton station. A water tanker from Rakaia was on hand at

the Innes Road property, but was not required.

A company spokesperson confirmed the fire was well contained within the machine involved.

There were no injuries to staff and no damage to the building or other contents.

“We would like to commend the staff on site for their quick and correct response to the situation and thank the emergency services that attended,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

An ambulance from the Ashburton St John station was also deployed in case of smoke inhalation.

Ashburton firefighters were at the scene for about an hour and a half.

Concerns rising for missing man

The family of missing teenager Toko Peter James Parata (right) are desperate to hear word of his whereabouts.

The 19-year-old went missing from the Adcroft Motel in Tinwald on Monday night, leaving behind his cellphone and belongings.

Parata’s sister contacted the Guardian earlier on Tuesday asking for the information regarding her brother’s disappearance to be shared on the paper’s Facebook page.

Police launched a missing person’s bulletin on Tuesday afternoon.

Parata had only been in Ashburton for two or three weeks, his sister Ana Hudson said.

He had come to the town to work and is understood to have been staying at the motel he went missing from at about 9pm on May 29.

Originally from Waikato, Par-

ata knows nobody in Ashburton and Hudson said: “He will be lost.”

Parata’s family have concerns about his mental health and the fact his cellphone was “smashed”.

Several members of the public have reported seeing a young man matching Parata’s description at different locations on State Highway 1 on Tuesday.

It appears he may have been heading north toward Christchurch on foot.

Spreading the smokefree message

Ashburtonians were out and about yesterday, spreading the message of World Smokefree Day. Members of the Cancer Society and Community and Public Health set-up a display at the EA Networks Centre, ready to spread this year’s message, ‘Quit now –

it’s about whanau’.

“We are here spreading the message of helping with quitting and offering support to try and move to a smokefree New Zealand by 2025,” said Mandy Casey, from the Cancer Society.

Support from the public had been positive, she said.

“We have come a long way

from being able to smoke in pubs and even on planes, which some of the kids couldn’t believe happened.”

De-normalising the idea of smoking is a big part of the message they are trying to deliver, Casey said. “Having sports clubs come on board has been a great thing,” she said.

Mt Hutt Bike Park secured for future generations

Bike Methven members are ecstatic to have their Mt Hutt Bike Park trails secured for generations to come with a new community collective purchase of their trail land.

The club is among shareholders of the new Mt Hutt Adventure Park Limited, alongside 10 others which include the four former owners of the land.

“There were a couple of times during the process we weren’t really sure whether it was going to go through. We are just over the moon, not only with the result we have got, but the people who have come on board with it. We have some of the sharpest minds in the country,” Burgess said.

Bike Methven fundraised more than $120,000 on Givealittle in three weeks, which had covered what the club needed to contribute for the purchase.

Club members began to establish trails on the land more than 10 years ago when it was owned by the University of Canterbury. They began to investigate long term ownership following the university selling the land, and logging being undertaken.

Burgess said today there were about 30 kilometres of mountain bike trails throughout the park, secured for an undisclosed sum, and more could be installed in a new QEII covenant area through native bush.

The bike park is popular with locals and some nights in summer there can be up to 50 mountain bikers using the trails. Burgess said a short term goal was to bring back international and national mountain bike racing events.

Additionally the new owners were keen to develop summer activities.

Sim said he had seen retention of the land as something which just had to be done for the community and its youth. Any development of other activities would be long-term.

“We are open to suggestions for either clubs or commercial interests to help develop it, but it’s a blank page at this stage,” Sim said.

Gypsy day has been a long held tradition in dairying strongholds like Mid Canterbury, but fewer cows are likely on the trek to new farms or winter feeding blocks this year.

June 1 is the day sharemilkers take up new contracts and dairy farms traditionally change ownership and while it remains commonplace to come across herds on the move, industry trends in Mid Canterbury have changed over recent years.

More farmers choose to truck cattle these days, Ashburton District Council roading and street services manager Brian Fauth said.

Canterbury is home to more large scale corporate-owned farms than many dairying regions, a trend also seen in Mid Canterbury, resulting in fewer 50:50 sharemilkers.

Nonetheless, Fauth said road users should still be prepared to come across large herds of cattle on the roads over the next few days.

“There will cows about and they should be well managed, the majority of farmers are very well prepared for gypsy day,” he said.

The council’s stock droving bylaw outlines the rules for moving cattle and sheep on the roads, and farmers must abide by these.

to empty their stomachs, lessening the amount of effluent left on the roads, pilot vehicles ahead of the herd and adequate warning signs to alert motorists.

The cattle must be actually moving toward the destination not standing grazing the roadside, Fauth said.

Where a state highway must be crossed an approved traffic management plan must be in place and followed.

Traffic management company Spraymarks specialises in dairy cattle movements. Operations manager Grant Pithie said the company is dealing with a similar number of operations as in recent years.

Lot 9 consents up for debate

Lot 9 in the Ashburton Business park rocketed to infamy last year when it was tagged as a site for a water bottling plant.

The land, owned by the Ashburton District Council comes with two resource consents attached, one for the abstraction of up to 45 litres or water per second and the second to discharge to ground up to 60 litres per second at another location.

There was strong community objection to the water bottling

proposal, based on a belief that the district’s water should not be sold.

A protest group, Bung the Bore was formed, and Ashburton became the rallying point for national concerns over the sale of water. Ultimately this played a part in stopping the sale.

There was then a strong push for the council to relinquish the consents on Lot 9 to ensure there would be no future opportunity for a buyer of the land to abstract water.

councillors will decide the future of the Lot 9 consents.

The consents lapse on September 30, 2019 and the council has three choices – it could renew these, allow them to lapse or it could seek to renew the consents possibly with variations.

The recommendation from staff is that no action is taken at this time. This would give the council the option to utilise the consents if an opportunity to do so came along before they lapsed.

Donations for hospital amaze

Christchurch Hospital’s Ward 22 cannot thank the Ashburton community enough for its amazing generosity.

When local woman Jackie Dwyer was faced with the stressful experience of having her son rushed to hospital recently, there was no time to even consider packing an overnight bag.

Her thoughts were only on making sure Maddox was safe and getting the best care possible.

But, as things calmed down, and he began improving by the day, she realised there was a real need for basic toiletries, and clothing that the hospital was unable to supply.

So, she took to social media and was overwhelmed to receive enough donations that they almost threatened to take over her house.

When the piles of pyjamas, underwear, bibs, baby gear, toiletries and baking were delivered to Ward 22 recently, staff were amazed at the generous reaction.

Charge nurse manager Tracy Jackson said it would mean so much to families having to spend time on the ward.

“Having an unplanned visit to hospital with your child is not an easy thing,” she said.

“This can be even more challenging when you come from out of town and don’t have even some basic necessities with you.

“The amazing generosity of these donations will ensure families that need to spend some time with us, have some of those essential things at a time when they need it most. A huge thank you to all those who gave.”

Dwyer said she was thrilled with the reaction, but also surprised by how many people came forward saying they had also been in a similar situation.

“I am grateful from the bottom off my heart to those who went out of their way to support me on this mission,” she said.

“It’s going to make families’ lives a little less stressful up there knowing they have a few necessities.”

District’s house prices remain static Over the past 12 months, house prices in the Ashburton District have remained static, with Quotable Value’s latest data showing the average value is $351,336, the same as it was in May last year.

After months of rising values, the district is now one of just four territorial authorities in the South Island where prices have moved into zero or negative growth.

Values have moved 1.9 per cent over the past three months and are now 25.5 per

cent above the market peak in 2007.

Mackenzie leads growth in the South Island at 35.6 per cent over the past year.

They are followed by Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago which have increased by 20.3 per cent.

Mackenzie’s house prices have risen 9.3 per cent over the past three months.

Police tight-lipped over disappearance Police are remaining tight-lipped over their investigation into the out-of-character disappearance of Christchurch builder Michael Craig McGrath.

McGrath, 49, was last seen at his Checketts Ave home in the suburb of Halswell on May 21.

A large police investigation is under way to find him.

Police started knocking his neighbours’ doors last Thursday and were in the area again yesterday.

Approached for an update into the probe yesterday, a police spokeswoman would only say: “The missing person investigation continues. No further updates at this stage.”

His brother Simon says while there will “obviously going to be all sorts of theories” about the disappearance, the family is focusing on any sightings of him or his blue 1994 Subaru Legacy station wagon.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney, who is leading the investigation, said police “have concerns for his welfare”.

Missing person posters have been placed around the area.

On Friday, police cordoned off his wellkept red brick property where he lived alone.

It remains taped off, with a large blue police tent in the front yard.

One neighbour said police came to her last Thursday wanting to eliminate her silver car from their inquiries.

McGrath’s blue station wagon was taken away from his property at the weekend.

Now, Sweeney is appealing for sightings of the Subaru over the weekend of May 2022 in the Halswell area.

Neighbours have described McGrath as a quiet man who rarely had visitors.

A local shopkeeper said McGrath came in occasionally - but again said he was a very quiet, solitary figure.

Mill Creek in the spotlight

Ashburton Zone Committee members along with some Ashburton District councillors had a first-hand look at the work which has been undertaken on Mill Creek on Tuesday.

Following the monthly zone committee meeting the group travelled to the Farm Road end of Argyle Park to view the $2.05 million project, which roughly translates to $1000 a metre, council open spaces manager David Askin said.

About 3500 tonnes of rock, 8000 metres of timber and 14,000 metres of geofabric reinforcement has been used to strengthen and stabilise the creek banks to prevent erosion, which has been a problem in past flooding events.

The work took 10,000 manhours to complete and runs from Farm Road to West Street, and a walkway has been constructed along most of its length, except for a short stretch which crosses privately owned land.

The creek has also been realigned in some places to improve the flow when the water is running high.

Use online sites as lure – Isis Islamic State has issued a chilling call to its followers to use online classified websites such as Gumtree and Ebay to lure unsuspecting people to their deaths.

The latest issue of the extremist group’s English language propaganda magazine Rumiyah suggests several ways Isis followers can take as many people as possible hostage and slaughter them.

It suggests posting fake ads for items for sale on Gumtree and Ebay to trick people into meeting them at a certain location so they can pay and collect the items.

Gumtree is urging users of its online classifieds to report anything suspicious.

“The safety of our community is our main priority and we urge anyone who thinks they’ve come across anything suspicious or concerning to report it to us,” a spokesman said in a statement to AAP on Wednesday.

The article also suggests using online ads for fake jobs or properties for rent as another way to lure people and details how to subdue and restrain them before killing them.

Australian terrorists along with a string of others who have committed atrocities in France and Britain and the United States are all praised in the article for set-

Olivia Newton-John has been diagnosed with breast cancer - again. She has vowed to fight the disease with the help of her own Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre based in Australia.

The actress will be helped by natural therapists, though she will have to undergo a “short” course of radiation.

Bomber suspected to have acted alone British police say three of the 14 people arrested over the Manchester arena suicide bombing have been released without charge, and the investigation so far has found bomber Salman Abedi acted largely alone as he assembled his deadly device.

Russ Jackson, head of the police Northwest Counterterrorism Unit, said analysis of surveillance camera footage and other evidence had shown that “Abedi himself made most of the purchases of the core components” of the bomb.

“Many of his movements and actions have been carried out alone during the four days from him landing in the country (to) committing this awful attack,” Jackson said.

The bombing killed 22 people and injured more than 100 after a show by American singer Ariana Grande at Manchester Arena.

Grande announced on Tuesday that she and other top stars – including Justin Bieber, Coldplay and Miley Cyrus – will return to the city to perform at a benefit concert on Sunday.

Meanwhile, police trying to unmask a possible network around Abedi searched a property in Wigan, 32 kilometres northwest of Manchester, briefly evacuating neighbours as the bomb squad was called in.

The house is one of more than a dozen searched in Manchester and beyond since the May 22 attack in an investigation that has involved 1000 police officers.

Police say Abedi returned to Britain from Libya, his parents’ homeland, on May 18.

The 87-year-old entertainer was at London’s Southwark Crown Court to hear that the prosecution would not seek a further retrial on charges he groped three teenage girls.

The decision came after the jury of seven women and five men failed to reach a majority verdict on all four counts after deliberating for four hours and 47 minutes.

Accordingly, Judge Deborah Taylor discharged the jury and formally found Harris not guilty of the charges, meaning he no longer faces the prospect of further jail time.

The jury in his second trial in January this year found him not guilty of three indecent assault charges but could not reach verdicts on four, leading to the latest retrial.

The Victorian schoolgirl killed at an Iraqi ice cream parlour in an Islamic State terror attack was scared of bombs but excited about her overseas trip.

One of her teachers at Sirius College in Melbourne told reporters 12-year-old Zynab Al Harbiya had been loved by all her friends.

“The biggest issue I had with her was her talking in class,” the teacher, Kirralee told reporters in Melbourne yesterday.

“She was loved by all of her friends. Before she went overseas she actually asked me for extra homework. She really cared about her studies and she was extremely excited to go overseas.”

Zynab was killed on Tuesday night in Baghdad when a car bomb detonated, killing 17 and wounding 32 people at an ice cream shop popular with families breaking their Ramadan fast. Zynab’s mother and uncles were also injured in the blast.

The recovery from SFF closure begins

T

he official waiting time is over and the news that Silver Fern’s plant at Fairton will close is unchanged.

That the plant was on borrowed time was widely acknowledged; that it would close was one of the country’s worst-kept secrets.

Yesterday the closure, announced two weeks ago, was confirmed and now the community and the company must move forward.

No matter how bad the news, there is always some comfort in certainty. And that we now have.

The company is doing the right thing here in setting up a resource centre to help out-ofwork staff find their way to a new future that – hopefully – will bring new employment.

And it’s in the area of employment that the strong economy of our district could be their friend.

Our unemployment rate is one of the lowest in New Zealand and employers are frequently heard to say they struggle to find staff.

If this resource centre operates the way it should, there could well be some happy marriages engineered between Fairton staff and employers with gaps in their staffing ranks.

Whichever way it’s looked at, the Fairton closure is tough.

While some older workers will be celebrating the end of their working life by banking a redundancy cheque and finally opting to retire, many will not.

Younger workers will still be looking for a future that includes a secure job. For them, redundancy is just a short-term stop-gap. It’s those people, as a community, we need to be looking out for.

While Silver Fern is offering opportunities to relocate to other plants where there are vacancies, we don’t want to lose our people.

We need jobs on home turf and to do this we need employers with vacancies to put their hands up.

Yes, there may be transport to works outside the district, but work close to home is much more ideal.

Inevitably everyone is painting Silver Fern as the bad guy. But is it?

They’re a business that has to turn a dollar.

If stock numbers are falling and they’re over capacity in terms of processing space, something has to give.

Unfortunately this time around it’s the Fairton plant.

WHAT YOU ARE SAYING This time of the year – May 31 and June 1 – when sharemilkers move from one farm to another with their cows is traditionally called Gypsy Day. A recent Otago Regional Council media release referred to Gypsy Day, but Dunedin city councillor Aaron Hawkins objected, saying the term “gypsy’’ was often used as a slur against Roma people.

Council officials later said the term was still commonly used in farming circles, but because of its “undertones’’, the council would not use it in future.

Financial system sound, but still risks

By Tamsyn PaRkeR Esther Gillam used to gather up all the invoices for her part-time work over a whole year and work out how much tax to pay in what was a major headache for the fulltime student.

But a tax change has made it easier for the company she contracts via to pay tax on her behalf.

The Hamilton-based student works two contract jobs and is part of the growing number of people doing a variety of “gigs” or jobs to support herself.

Gillam works around six to eight hours a week helping out a person with disabilities – doing housework and driving.

She combines that with contracting to her husband’s not-forprofit business and fulltime study in occupational therapy.

Before signing up to online care working platform myCare she had to invoice the family directly and admits her record keeping often made it tricky to work out exactly how much tax to pay at the end of the year.

Social entrepreneur Derek Handley has co-founded a new tech business which aims to ensure you never lose your keys, phone or anything important.

Tech startup Magpie yesterday launched its GPS mobile tracking subscription service and device on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and has already made three quarters of its $10,000 goal.

On top of that was the challenge of finding the hundreds of dollars to pay the tax when it was due.

But now the company will pay some of her tax on her behalf.

“I think it can make a big difference. It depends on how many jobs you do.”

She said it was also the record keeping side which helped.

“While paying the tax is helpful, you also need the records to meet your own obligations easily.

“It does help those less experienced in being out on their own.”

MyCare managing director Mark Jefferies said his business approached the IRD about its concerns around tax and its selfemployed workforce about a year ago.

The company has around 3500 people that pick up work via its platform but does not employ them directly.

At the same time around 2500 clients advertise work via the site.

Jeffries said many people were used to being employed and having their employer sort out their tax for them.

The firm already facilitated invoices and payments between workers and those that used their services and could make manual tax payments.

And now it can deduct 10 per cent from what the workers earn to pay their taxes.

While there is a risk some will underpay their tax, Jeffries said that was low because many care workers were low paid and worked part-time.

Paying some tax throughout the year was also better than paying no tax during the year and facing a big tax bill at the end of the year, he said.

Jefferies said the future of work was changing which meant many people were no longer just employed or contractors.

“There is this whole middle ground now.”

Jefferies said despite the extra work for his platform it saw the move as being a good corporate citizen. “By taking away that compliance problem they can concentrate on what they love to do.”

“Borrowers with high DTI ratios are typically more exposed to a rise in interest rates or a decline in

increase in domestic borrowing costs. Rising protectionism could also affect the trade-exposed sectors of the New Zealand economy,” it said.

It reiterated it is undertaking a review of bank capital requirements and recently released an issues paper detailing the intended approach and scope of the review.

It said principles underpinning the review included that capital requirements for New Zealand banks should remain conservative relative to international peers and that complexity in capital regulation should be reduced where possible.

Regarding dairy it said that after two years of low prices, whole milk powder prices increased by 45 per cent over the past 12 months and the majority of dairy farms are now expected to be profitable in the current season. However, “indebtedness in the sector has continued to increase, and the most indebted dairy farms remain highly vulnerable to lower dairy prices or an increase in costs,” it said.

Banks should continue to closely monitor and maintain full provisioning against lending to highrisk farms, it said.

New Zealand’s financial system is sound, but housing market vulnerabilities remain a key risk and the central bank still wants to curb high debt-to-income lending if necessary, it said in its twice-yearly financial stability report.

Since the last report, house price inflation has moderated and banks are more resilient to a market downturn, but houses remain overvalued in many parts of the country and some homeowners are vulnerable to a potential fall in incomes or a rise in mortgage rates, it said.

“A further resurgence in house prices would be of real concern, given existing affordability constraint,” it said.

New Zealand’s housing market has been running hot, spurred by record high immigration and record low interest rates. Over the past several years, the central bank has introduced loan-to-valuation ratios on borrowing for housing in a bid to curb lending. The central bank said the LVRs have had an impact, with annual national house price inflation, as measured by the Real Estate Institute’s house price index, at 8 percent

policy tool. In yesterday’s financial stability report, the central bank said it would shortly release a consultation paper proposing that DTI ratio restrictions be added to the Reserve Bank’s macroprudential toolkit.

It said, however, if a DTI tool was available, the Reserve Bank would not apply it at this stage, given that LVR restrictions appear to be mitigating housing risks.

However, “should high house price growth return and the proportion of housing lending at high DTI ratios remains high, a DTI restriction could be warranted”.

The central bank also signalled bank funding pressures and dairy sector indebtedness as other key risks.

While these risks had also moderated it said New Zealand banks had become more reliant on offshore funding to support new lending, exposing them to international risks that could disrupt global markets.

It said that global political and policy uncertainty “remains elevated” and debt burdens are high in a number of countries. “A sharp reversal in risk sentiment could lead to higher funding costs for New Zealand banks and an

Mid Canterbury girls on the move Mid Canterbury drivers are being asked to be extra careful and farmers to make safety a top priority if they are moving cows from one farm to another today.

The NZ Transport Agency says some herds will be on the move in the next few weeks as the milking season ends and cows move to other properties for the 2017-18 season.

June 1 is Moving Day and traditionally when sharemilkers relocate themselves and their stock to new farms. While a lot of stock is moved in trucks, many will be herded along roads.

NZTA says stock crossing operations had been approved for various locations on the state highway network around the Ashburton District over the next six weeks.

Some herds will be crossing State Highway One, usually walked down local side roads and then crossed over the highway, under stop/go traffic control and some droving of cattle is also expected along the State Highway 77 Methven highway and Waimarama Road shoulders.

Dates, times and locations are approved on a daily basis and approvals cover a few days to allow for a good weather window.

South Canterbury maintenance contract manager John Keenan said the agency aimed to ensure that any delays that may be caused by moving stock on the highway were kept to under 10 minutes.

“With this in mind, we will be asking motorists travelling throughout the Mid Canterbury region to drive with care and patience and to watch out for more cattle on the roads over the next few weeks.”

Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright said motorists travelling not only in Mid Canterbury but throughout the Canterbury and West Coast regions should drive with extra care and

watch for livestock on roads ahead of the annual movement.

“If you come across a herd on the road, please be patient and don’t beep your horn as this could frighten animals and lead to a longer delay,” Wright said.

Farmers droving their stock need consent from the Transport Agency to move animals along or across state highways.

This permission comes from the Road Corridor Manager, generally managed by a Corridor Access Request and Work Activity Permit.

A temporary Traffic Management Plan is also required.

This is designed to help protect everyone on the road, the stock and the road itself.

MOVING TIPS seen by road users, warning signs should be used and flashing amber beacon lights activated on vehicles that are part of the droving operation.

Tips for people moving stock: ■

Plan ahead. Use the most direct route to move stock and only cross or follow the road if it is necessary. Move stock during daylight hours and avoid doing this at peak morning and afternoon travel times. Keep stock off well-maintained road verges.

■

Particular care is needed when moving stock on roads with bends. Signs or a pilot vehicle with a flashing amber beacon will be needed around the corner, to warn motorists of stock ahead.

■

If you are moving stock on a local road or a highway, you need a corridor access request/work access permit and a traffic management plan.

■

If moving machinery drive slowly and, if necessary, have a pilot vehicle to warn road users of the wide vehicle following.

■

Those involved in driving stock must wear high visibility clothing to ensure they can be clearly

Know your legal obligations around driving livestock along or across a road.

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers are lamenting a high empty rate after the 2016 mating season.

On average 20 per cent of the district’s milking herd has failed to get in calf.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy industry spokesperson Nathan Currie had heard of some herds where the empty rate was as high as 40 per cent.

Empty cows are usually culled, potentially costing farmers tens of thousands of dollars in lost production for the coming season. Replacement stock also comes with a hefty price tag, at up to $2000 a head.

Currie said poor quality spring pasture, attributed to wet weather, could have contributed to lower fertility levels.

At the tail end of a couple of tough years in terms of the farmgate milk payout, a lot of farmers had chosen not to use oestrus (CIDR) implants, which synchronise ovulation, to keep on-farm costs down.

Since the banning of routine inductions three years ago farmers have a limited window to get cows in calf. Late calvers are later into the milking shed and cycle later.

They have a shorter production season and are likely to calve later the following season, should they mate successfully.

DairyNZ Canterbury regional leader Virginia Serra said farmers were understandably frustrated in-calf results were not improving despite their efforts.

“It has been a very hot topic at discussion groups and field days and farmers are a bit lost as to what can be the reason for some of the poor results,” Serra said.

“People are trying to find the silver bullet for this and unfortunately in reproduction there is isn’t one as many factors affect the results.

“Fodderbeet, less use of grain and controlled internal drug release (CIDRs) have been mentioned as possible reasons, but in reality the reason will be different for every farmer.

“Farmers need good data to understand where the problem is for their own herd and then find the possible options to address the issues.

“Working with an in-calf adviser is one way to do this.”

DairyNZ is researching to improve herd reproduction with a strong emphasis on uterine health and genetic fertility.

A recent study found 42 per cent of the dairy cow population in New Zealand had some form of endometritis in the month prior to mating.

It was not clear as to why this was occurring and further research would focus on the calving transition, Serra said.

Rural Women reports for June

Anama Life and death was the subject of a talk at Anama Rural Women’s May meeting.

Mr Barry Hayman spoke of the importance of making one’s wishes known about funeral details before the event occurred, leaving families at odds about the best way to proceed.

Mr Hayman, a director at Paterson’s Funerals also spoke of the benefit of having a pre-paid funeral in the event of an older person going into a home where assets such as death insurance would be added to the maximum amount a resident could own.

Barry Hayman Costs of burial plots, casket types, flowers, venues and transport were all discussed emphasising the theme of talking about funerals and arrangements well in advance of the event.

Other business at the meeting included arrangements for the mid-winter meal with husbands in June, the confirmation of the annual donations to local groups which included the Mayfield St John, the Mayfield and Mt Somers Fire Brigade, the Mid Canterbury Rural women and Presbyterian Support.

Sympathy was conveyed to a member in the loss of a sister and thoughts for those who had not been well.

Women’s Institute reports Fairton Fairton’s May meeting was held at Mrs Veronica Clark’s home, nine members were present, and two apologies accepted.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed as were the finances.

Adrianne read the remits for the coming Annual General Meeting in Christchurch. It was a special day for Veronica, a “big birthday” and all were invited to lunch. What a beautiful spread. She was wished a very happy day and presented with lovely flowers. A great day!

Hinds Mrs Betty Wilson, President, welcomed members to the May meeting, held in the Davison Room of Hinds Community Centre which is looking all the better for a bit of paint and kitchen refurbishing. The Lynnford Rural Women enjoyed the mayoral bake-off. ebrate the 81st birthday of the branch at the Nosh Restaurant at Ashford Village.

With everyone happy to chat after lunch, it was only a short meeting, outside under the trees.

Formalities was kept to a minimum and just the necessary announcements were made.

It was a busy week just before Easter with the Rural Women Week.

On the Monday of that week, Lynnford delivered Meals on Wheels which went smoothly, although two packed lunches were not brought out at the start and had to be delivered separately.

A lot of fun was had at the Mayoral Bake Off. As the ‘Walk the World”, which was

scheduled to be held in Methven, on the Thursday, before the Easter break, did not go head, a gold coin collection was taken up at the meeting to be forwarded.

The Ashburton District Council sponsored cooking class for children, held in the first week of the school holidays was a full class with six members of Lynnford Rural Women assisting.

The children were given a book made up of the recipes they made and all seemed very happy with their cooking at the tasting of their morning tea muffins, macaroni cheese and salad with parfait for lunch and decorated cup cakes to take home.

Back at the meeting room Pauline welcomed others who could not be there for lunch. The remits for the AGM in Christchurch this month were read and considered.

The agenda also for the Rugby cup Day with the theme: “Lion’s Roar” was contemplated, as was the Ashburton Show Bay and Tray theme. The Roll Calls were, Wear a white flower in memory of your mother, and biscuits for the Cancer society, both being well supported.

Member Nellie Burrows doing Golden Threads this month talked about her trip to Great Britain with family. She was there for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in the village of Amersham. She travelled

Winchmore Members travelled back in time at our meeting to hear about our speaker Sonjia Mee mingling with the Royals in 1970.

Sonjia was a very entertaining speaker who had assisted with looking after Princess Anne at a Royal Event in Christchurch and in the evening attending a dinner on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

To hear such a personal insight from someone who had been up close in this environment was interesting.

This event led on to lunch some time later in London at St James Palace.

Sonjia gave us a brief overview of her very interesting life working in America for 17 years and in total away from New Zealand for 38 years.

Now settled back in Ashburton she has found the area to be a very friendly and welcomed place to call home.

It was a cold wet night but a very good number of members came out along with two visitors, one intending to become a member.

The branch was sad to lose another member with Gloria Watson passing away the previous week.

A busy time ahead with our Annual Quiz, a good number of teams entered and once again we were lucky to have Craig Wiggins as our MC and quiz master.

There is to be a Regional Day on July 28 and the AGM of the Provincial on August 18.

The meeting concluded with a shared cuppa and lots of friendly chatting.

Wakanui WI’s April meeting was held at the Stables Restaurant. Thirteen members and two visitors enjoyed a lovely birthday lunch. Motto: “May the hinges of friendship never grow rusty”. Roll Call: “Wear a necklace and talk about it”. Some members got theirs for a daughter’s wedding or overseas trips to Venice, Norfolk Island, Scotland and one was a family heirloom.

At federation AGM Jude Vaughan presented Diane Carter with her Good Service Badge (38 years membership). As well, Wakanui WI won the Maude Begg Trophy at for the most points in competitions.

Seven members visited the Riding for Disabled area and watched the children ride their horses.

We were shown a few photos she had taken while over there.

When she finished Mary was thanked with a fruit pack then we had a social time over a cup of tea.

The youngest person going was 57 and the oldest 102 and a payment of $10 is paid for the day for expenses.

Ashburton Bridge Club There is often discussion about what impact the opening lead has on the outcome of a contract and this hand played last Thursday night illustrates the situation quite pointedly.

After Dealer, East passes, South will open a pre-emptive 3 Hearts – 7 Hearts in his hand and less than 10 points; West passes and North, with his power house, raises to 4 Hearts, needing to win 10 tricks.

Now it is all over to West’s opening lead. If he chooses the Diamond A, East will signal with his 8 and the defence will have their 2 Diamond tricks. Declarer makes 5 Hearts – 11 tricks.

But what if West chooses the Club K? Declarer wins with dummy’s Club A, draws trumps in 2 rounds, cashes his singleton Spade K and can now access dummy with a trump. Running off dummy’s good spades allows him to discard his losing Clubs and Diamonds. The result – 7 Hearts made – 13 tricks!

You may comment that Declarer could have played the Spade K after each defender followed to the 1st round of trumps, but why take the risk of the defender with a trump still in hand having a void in Spades and getting a cheap ruff?

Ashburton Club & MSA Golf Section What will be a first for any South Island Chartered Club our golf section will have the honour of hosting a two day Mixed Tournament to be played at the Tinwald Golf Club, Queens Birthday Weekend June 3 and 4 Our committee has organized a great weekend of golf, kicking off with registration night Friday 2nd at the MSA 4.30pm onwards.

Competition for Saturday will be 4 BBB Sunday Combined Stablefords.

Sunday evening dinner and prize giving back at the MSA 5pm.

Our section has entered nine mixed pairs, collectively a total of 32 pairs from around the S I will be participating (hopefully at the end of play Sunday there are still that many).

We are all looking forward to a new competition and the weather gods play their part too.

Ashburton Friendship & Entertainment Club On Sunday afternoon May 28, our second concert for the season was held in the Ashburton Savage Club Hall, commencing at 2.00pm.

Following the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem and the new Club song, President John welcomed members & visitors with a special welcome to the new members who received their club badges.

The orchestra commenced the programme with a few rousing numbers which were followed by items by the Samoan Choir and dance troupe.

What a wonderful treat it was to see them in their colourful costumes and the audience were spellbound by the beautiful harmonies from the choir and energetic dance routines.

It was an experience that will be remembered by all present for a very long time.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Joy Jaine welcomed members to our last meeting for the current season, which began with a pot luck tea and social time.

Members kept a few moments silence in memory of Maureen McDowell who was an enthusiastic and faithfull member for many years.

Our thoughts are with Norman McDowell and his family.

The raffles were won by Pat Tarbotton and Trevor Gamblin.

Premier bloom was once again awarded to Brian Glassey for his chrysanthemum ‘Bryan Kirk’.

Guest for the evening was Helen Hargraves from Terrace Gardens who spoke about lilies, bedding plants and her home florist business.

Helen is a great supporter of the popular Saturday Farmer’s Market and the new Christmas Market venture, which is also proving to be very popular in the run up to Christmas.

Members Joy Jaine, Surrey Lamont and Rosemary Case spoke of the Annual Iris Seminar which they recently attended and which was hosted by the South Canterbury Iris Group.

This was a most enjoyable day with good speakers and several workshops.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Eleven of our members took part in the South Canterbury in Timaru May 13-14 and Neville Bensdorp and Richard Browne earned themselves a Bronze Medal in the Championship.

Jan Guilford with Janet Wilkinson from Papanui won Silver in the Championship consolation.

John McKay with Ron Paterson from Papanui won Gold in the Plate, and Karen Bensdorp and Marion won Silver.

Christine Carr and Shelagh Field won Bronze.

Rewa and Stephen Kyle won Bronze in the Plate consolation.

A good effort by all concerned.

We played our Club Mens Drawn doubles on May 21 with Peter Marriott and Trevor Nish winning the Trophy.

Runners up were Stephen Kyle and Vince Nuberg.

Third was Neville Bensdorp and Henry Marriott.

The Club Ladies Drawn Doubles were played the same day and Betty King and Marion Harrison won the Trophy.

Jan Guilford and Ellen Pithue were runners up.

Third place was Wil Nuberg and Alison Thomas.

Sunday 28th we had the Woolston Petanque Club down for a social day and challenge for the Ashwool Trophy.

Ashburton won with 282 points, 12 ahead of Woolston so were able to retain the Trophy.

Top scorers for Ashburton were Jan Guilford with 65 points, Stephen Kyle with 64 points and Ellen Pithie with 52.

Top scorers for Woolston were Gary with 65 points, Winston with 55 points and Mary with 45 points.

We finished off a thoroughly enjoyable day with afternoon tea, and our thanks to all those who helped.

Next week some of us will be playing in Christchurch on Queens Birthday Monday and trying out their new terrain which they have waited so long for.

So new challenges for everybody.

Ashburton Woodworkers Merv Peck, president, welcomed 20 members to our May, AGM, meeting.

He commented on the success of the recent Funday, that the club held in April against other woodturning clubs from Oamaru, Timaru, Christchurch, and Rangiora.

He proudly held up the Tina Turner Trophy that the Ashburton club had won.

Aorangi Vets Pennant Final The final of the Vet Pennants was played at Geraldine District Golf Club in excellent conditions between Rakaia and Lower Waitaki.

The games were evenly contested with the final match going to the 18th hole.

Rakaia were the eventual winners 4 ½ to 1 ½.

Cavendish Club Arts & Crafts Circle On May 25 Arts and Crafts Circle took us to the Museum for a tour “Behind the Scenes”.

We saw so many interesting things and learnt quite a lot re Ashburton’s history.

Afternoon tea followed upstairs and Kathleen and Maryanne were thanked for such an enjoyable and interesting tour, thanks also to Nicole from the Art Gallery for setting up the afternoon tea room for us.

An enjoyable time was had by all.

Travel Club On Friday 13 the Travel Club were delighted to hear about a cruise taken by Mrs Butchard.

Fifteen days on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Budapest and back again – Mrs Butchard is a very observant traveller and has the great gift of including her audience to the towns and places she had visited.

Many club members had also visited those places and it was a great joy to have bought alive almost forgotten travels.

Club members do hope Mrs Butchard will travel again and return to our club to share her delight and joy of travel.

Ashburton Music Club It was pleasing to have a large crowd for the concert especially as there were several musical concerts on that weekend’.

The performers were a group that Olivia knew.

They were Olivia and Joshua Pike, Issac Shatford (violin), Jasmine Jiang (piano) and William O’Brien.

The title of the programme was “Olivia Pike in Recital.”

The MC was Ron Cresswell and after each item he spoke to the artist and asked them how they started their musical career and what were their future plans.

First Olivia sang three songs,Issac Shatford played a lovely Bach piece followed by Olivia using her great talent with three piano pieces.

Joshua with his confident bass voice sang a German song by Handel. Olivia finished the first half singing accompanied by Issac on the violin.

The second half began with a young artist Jasmine,Olivia and Issac in a Chamber ensemble playing 5 Hebrew Love songs.

William then sang and acted out two songs in an operatic style.

Diane spoke of the value of training sessions for new councillors and the allocation of the many sub-committees with their varying functions.

Her obvious enthusiasm for involvement with the community inspired and re-assured us.

We also heard about Diane’s earlier involveDiane ment with the CorRawlinson riedale Society here and as World President, when she was often the sole woman at business and conference sessions.

Her description of visits to farming areas in South America included the growing of rice and the irrigation and special machinery necessary.

When the local Bridge Debate was current Diane became a foundation member of the Ashburton Citizens Association and yet another interest she thoroughly enjoys is being a Marriage Celebrant.

The old adage that if you want something done, done well, and done soon, ask a busy person, certainly applies to Diane Rawlinson.

Top scorer for our team was Sandy Bennett with 199.11 closely followed by Michaela Smith and Steve McArthur on 196.8 and 196.7.

Colin Taylor had a P.B on one card with 98.5 and Emma Smith recorded 99.6 on one of her cards.

No 100s to report for club nights but a number of 99s.

Murray Cook top scored with Lanelle McArthur and Nick Stewart one inner behind, Shaye Robb gave a strong indication of things to come and personal bests for Tyler Tuki (again) and Susan Peattie.

Intriguing encounter likely

Mid Canterbury rugby sides will battle it out tonight ahead of the long weekend in a disjointed round of the Combined Country competition.

Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club Trophy competitors, Southern and Celtic, will lock horns under the lights at Hinds this evening with both sides looking to bounce back from losses in the first round of the reformatted competition.

Michael Ellis’ Southern side suffered a 24-28 loss at home on Saturday to Kaiapoi as their season of close, but not close enough, continued.

Celtic suffered a similar fate at the hands of Saracens on Saturday afternoon so tonight’s match-up should make for a good encounter.

With the Watters Cup just around the corner, the chance to eye each other up in a match that doesn’t count towards the competition will be a welcome one for both sides.

Of particular note, the clash between Nathan McCloy and Richard Fridd, who play first-five for Celtic and Southern respectively, will be a much observed clash for Mid Canterbury selectors, with their first squad for the season due to be released close to the end of this month.

In other action over the weekend, Rakaia will head to Darfield looking to continue their unbeaten streak in a semi-final of the main Luisetti Seeds Championship while Methven will host Hornby and Hampstead will welcome the unbeaten Rolleston to Ashburton.

Pressure gets real They’ve got the new black jersey which embraces the latest technology and which includes a crest which they say is an appropriate nod to the past. The Lions tour has just got very real. Sam Cane, an almost certain starter in the No7 jersey for the first test against the Lions at the All Blacks fortress on June 24, wasn’t involved in the 2011 World Cup but did experience the one in the UK four years later.

The Lions tour will be easily the biggest he has been involved in on home soil. “Having a first look at them at the Baabaas this weekend will make it pretty real as well,” Cane said.

Gatland well aware of monumental task ahead

By Patrick Mckendry Warren Gatland has arrived in Auckland, happy to be “home” and stressing the need to win hearts and minds – not only among New Zealand rugby supporters but within his British and Irish Lions squad as well.

The former All Blacks hooker was one of the last of the large 41-player touring party plus assorted management to enter Auckland airport arrivals area yesterday afternoon after the squad’s flight from Melbourne.

Players such as skipper Sam Warburton, loose forward James Haskell – a former Highlander – and lock Alun Wyn-Jones, among others, signed autographs for the Lions supporters in attendance, almost all of whom were wearing the famous red jersey.

Once Gatland did arrive – following a powhiri once the plane landed – he smiled at being welcomed home by the press pack and quickly set out his priorities for a six-week tour which will be among the toughest the Lions have ever attempted.

“The biggest challenge early on, or one of the things that I’ve learned in my vast experience, is that we have to create harmony

within this group,” Gatland said.

“There are a lot of players here – you have to give them an opportunity, so we’re going to be mixing and rotating during those early games to give those players a chance.

“Because I think if you come all this way, to come as far as New Zealand, and you play and you get a chance, at least you’ve been in the shop window, at least you can say you’ve been a part of it.

“So that’s something we need to do in those first three games ... before we start thinking about the test matches.”

The Lions’ first on-field challenge is against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians in Whangarei on Saturday, a match they should win comfortably before they face stiffer challenges against the Blues at Eden Park next Wednesday and Crusaders in Christchurch the following Saturday.

Gatland hinted he will use those players who haven’t been involved in recent club finals and make the most of the combinations that have already been developed at a recent camp in Dublin.

land said he hadn’t spoken to the 22-year-old as much as he normally would.

“We spoke last week and he said it was a bit funny that we normally speak before games.

“I said, ‘perhaps you could give me all your calls and moves’, and he said, ‘as long as you let me run through a big hole in the first few minutes I’d be happy with that’.

“We had a bit of banter and a joke about it.”

Gatland added of the need to win over a New Zealand public which he described as “passionate” rugby supporters following the controversy-riven Lions tour of 12 years ago.

“We’re aware there’s a bit of bridge building to do after 2005 with those things we do off and on the field and the way we conduct ourselves.

“The Lions for a long time have been involved in getting out in the community and visiting hospitals and schools and we want to do that, run a few open [training] sessions as well, and hopefully play some good rugby.

“If we can win some hearts and minds off the field and play some good rugby then we’re going to end up with a cracking tour.”

grabs, there was plenty of action throughout the day and Ashburton locals certainly set the standard.

Of the 30 medals collected locally, 10 of those came as golds, with seven silvers and 13 bronze.

Young Ashburtonians who performed with great distinction in Saturday’s competition included Carina Lupse (7), Isabel Wang (8) and Charles Savage (12) who each picked up two gold medals on the day.

Good reviews for Inter Centre

Top-flight netball in Mid Canterbury returns to purely local tonight after the completion of the new Inter Centre Competition.

In its first season, the competition which saw teams from all over Canterbury competing each week, has received plenty of positive reviews and it’s hard to see those in charge of locking the it in for a second year in 2018 not doing exactly that.

While a tough ask for the Mid Canterbury sides to take on some powerhouse outfits from the heart of Christchurch, the positives of such matches often far out-weighed the negatives, with players exposed to a huge pool of talent.

One match has already been undertaken this week between Ashburton College and Celtic with the college girls pulling off a big win beating the Celtic side 29-28.

the result after a busy time for her girls as they mix their time in the local competition with Super Net on Wednesday’s as well.

The College side will be looking to carry that momentum through to tonight when they take on the talented Hampstead side.

Methven, who after being the leading local side last season, battled their way through the Inter Centre competition but will enjoy the prospect of getting back to what they know in the local competition.

They take on Southern in an all country affair this evening with both sides desperate for success.

Celtic, who will be smarting from their defeat to Ash Coll on Tuesday will be keen to right that wrong when they take to the court to tackle United when they clash in the other major match up of the night.

In other matches tonight, Rakaia A will take on Celtic B, Ashburton College B will tackle Celtic C and Southern B and Hampstead B will lock horns.

Shirley defence keeps out college attack Ashburton College senior boys’ basketball team suffered another close on Tuesday night, going down to Shirley Boys’ High School 86-80.

College was down at the first quarter 17-21 but led 45-37 at halftime.

With a vocal home crowd in their quarter, the Shirley side turned on the defence and closed the gap to seven by three-quarter time.

The hosts took momentum into the last period, scoring 29 points to Ashburton’s 16.

Ashcoll coach Pip Johnston said away games were always harder and the match could well have gone Ashcoll’s way but for a few lapses.

“The game was ours to have as going into in the third and fourth quarters we had leads, but we just couldn’t keep it going.

“Shirley were a very good team on defence, I give them credit for that.”

Josh Lowe and Mitchel Prendergast top scored with 16 points, while Gareth Hunt was also in double figures on 10 points.

Johnston said the side would bounce back from the close loss.

The Thompson Trophy takes a break with Queen’s Birthday and the side’s next game will be on June 13.

The senior girls also take a break

The Middleton girls came out firing from behind the arc hitting five first quarter three-pointers, while college struggled to find their feet.

Down 22-10 at the end of the quarter, college was on the back foot.

The second quarter saw much of the same with the college girls never getting into any offensive rhythm.

On Middleton’s end, recent Nelson imports Lauryn Hippolite and Aimee Book kept the scoreboard steadily ticking over for a 41-27 half-time deficit.

Hippolite continued her outside shooting form into the third, with Middleton outscoring the college girls 21-11 for the quarter and pushing the margin to 62-38 by the end of the quarter.

College started the fourth quarter aggressively, pressing the Middleton guards from the onset.

The pressure forced several turnovers, however, Ashcoll was unable to convert those into points.

Guard Liberty Ross shone on defence, picking up a handful of steals and 10 points.

Inside the paint, forward Sophie Adams produced a strong performance, racking up 23 points for the game.

Quantock ready for big debut Young Mid Cantabrian Job Quantock makes his competitive debut in the Hyundai NZ i20 AP4+ rally car at this weekend’s Rally Canterbury, with his key goals to keep developing and learning as a rally driver.

The 22-year-old earned the opportunity to contest two New Zealand Rally Championship events in the Paddon Rallysportrun car when he won the inaugural Hyundai NZ Young Driver Scholarship last December.

“Our main goal for rally is to finish and keep developing as a driver and team while enjoying this amazing experience,” says Quantock of the one-day rally running on Sunday.

“Obviously we have one of the best, if not the best package in the championship with the Hyundai AP4+ car, but we also still have a lot to learn.

“The focus is just to continue to learn the car and see where we end up at the end of the day.”

Quantock will have Hamilton’s Jason Farmer alongside as his codriver in Canterbury.

Farmer also been in the Hyundai for the first two NZRC rounds, co-driving for defending NZRC champion David Holder.

Kiwi world rally star Hayden Paddon, who co-manages the Hyundai New Zealand Rally Team with his father Chris Paddon, says: “It’s exciting to have Job competing with us for the first time.

“We saw at the shootout last year that he has a lot of potential and we think he may surprise a few.

“However, we have no expectations of him in Canterbury other than to finish the rally and to learn the car, pace notes and competitiveness at the front of NZRC as he progresses. For Job, it’s all about learning, and having Jason Farmer alongside him as a one-off for this rally will certainly help Job with that goal.”

“I am really excited to now have my first drive as part of the Hyundai NZ Scholarship, especially with it being at our home event in Canterbury,” Quantock said.

“Having Jason in the car will be a huge bonus for us.

“Not only does he bring several years of experience at the top of NZRC but he has also already done a couple of rounds in the car with Dave Holder, so that will also be an advantage.”

The Paddon Rallysport team will test the 1.8-litre, turbocharged machine immediately prior to the Canterbury Rally, something Quantock is looking forward to, having had only a short stint behind the wheel during last year’s scholarship shootout.

“It will be great to spend some more time in the Hyundai and get a bit more comfortable before the rally,” he says.

Paddon is enthusiastic about the current and future prospects of the relatively new AP4 rally category.

Big bucks for Savabeels A pair of New Zealand-bred daughters of Savabeel have hit dizzy heights on the Gold Coast. The first day of Tuesday’s broodmare sale was topped by the Fillies’ Classic winner Nurse Kitchen, bred by former top trainer Peter Moody, when she sold for $1.7 million to the China Horse Club. The former Graeme and Debbie Rogerson-trained Soriano, who was the dual Group One winner of the Zabeel Classic and the Herbie Dyke Stakes for Denise Howell, also reached seven figures when she was knocked down for $A1.15 million.

Marcoola hasn’t won a race this year, but that will count for nothing when the whips are cracking in the $100,000 Ruby on Saturday.

Marcoola ‘can go quicker’ If you want to back the best fouryear-old trotter at the Harness Jewels on Saturday you have a selection of bad news to deter you.

You could be put off Marcoola in the $100,000 Ruby because he hasn’t won a race this year.

Or that he hasn’t actually run a place in three of his last four starts.

And even that he was, by his own standards, pathetic when finishing second last at Addington last start.

But the worst, most daunting piece of information about the horse who all but conquered champion Monbet in November is what happened after that dramatic recent Addington failure.

“He came back in to the sta-

bling area and by the time we had the gear off him his heart rate was back down to 60 beats per minute,” says driver Clint Ford.

“So basically he didn’t have a race, he didn’t try.”

As much as Ford hates admitting his best ever horse dogged it at Addington last start, and it is not the first time.

“He did it once in a trial as an early three-year-old, he just didn’t try because things didn’t go his way.”

Since that day Marcoola has tried plenty of other times and showed great courage in his epic war with Monbet.

So Ford is still confident he can find that appetite for a fight again before Saturday.

“We had him checked out after the Addington run and he was sore over his back so we have had that worked on and I think that it has definitely helped a bit.”

The Ashburton workouts last Saturday would suggest a painfree Marcoola was more like the horse who won two Derbys last season and distanced an open class field at Cambridge on Christmas Eve. He was quick off the gate, built up a good head of steam and won by eight lengths in a 1:56.5 mile, albeit getting a bit tired at the line.

“He needed that and felt far better than at Addington,” says Ford.

“He can go quicker because that was his first big hit out for a while and he did it under his own steam.

“That workout was part of waking him up, getting his mind on the job for this week.”

Marcoola isn’t the only hotshot four-year-old in Saturday’s trot with no doubts over their ability but question marks nevertheless.

Lemond, who nearly won the group one Anzac Cup in April, galloped in that workout last Saturday, while Wilma’s Mate may need a late driver replacement if David Butt doesn’t pass his medical examination tomorrow.

That leaves the relatively inexperienced Dark Horse as the favourite because Rowe Cup winner Temporale is drawn wide and has only raced once left-handed this season.

Allpress confident Top central districts jockey Lisa Allpress is confident about the chances of Strada Roccia at today’s Feilding meeting at Woodville, according to trainer Mike Breslin.

The Road to Rock filly will run in the Beveridge Maiden over 1400m, with the Heavy 11 track the main concern for the Awapuni horseman.

Training great returning to NZ Laurie Laxon is heading home to continue his career.

The New Zealand Racing Hall of Famer has dominated Singapore racing for the past 17 years, winning nine premierships and more than 1250 races at Kranji Racecourse, but has decided it’s time to pull up stumps on the island nation.

He will return to his Maungatautari farm in Waikato, where

produced for Sir Peter and his late brother Philip.

“I’ll probably be home by September and I’ll train from my farm, just for Peter Vela,” Laxon said from Singapore.

“I’ve been in Singapore 17 years and it was just time. I’ve had a good innings up here and enjoyed a really good income. I’m really proud of what I’ve been able to achieve here.”

Stephen Ramsay and Julia Ritchie are currently training, and prepare a team of 30 to 40 horses solely for Sir Peter Vela.

It will be the revival of a once formidable trainer-owner partnership that led to wins in races as important as the Hong Kong International Cup and with a long list of high quality performers, the like of Noble Heights, Romanee Conti and Clear Rose that Laxon

Laxon has won every feature race on the Singapore calendar at least once and some as many as six times, most notably winning the Kranji Mile and Chairman’s Trophy five times each, four Singapore Guineas, Queen Elizabeth II Cups and Patron’s Bowls and twice claiming the Singapore Derby and Singapore Gold Cup. Sport Cavs underdogs again LeBron James is back in the NBA Finals for the seventh straight year.

But he and his Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves the underdogs as they clash for an unprecedented third straight season with Golden State. James called the Warriors “the best team in our league for the last three years” even before adding 2014 league MVP Kevin Durant. A new principal sponsor has marked the end of an era for another after nearly two decades of service to Mid Canterbury rugby.

The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union announced last night at its evening with former All Black legend, Grant Fox, that agricultural recruitment specialists, Agstaff would be the union’s new principal sponsor.

The announcement comes after the Ashburton Trust, who have been the principal sponsor of the rugby union for 18 years, chose to take a step back this year as they undergo changes within their own business which has seen them decrease many

of their levels of sponsorship across the board.

Union chief executive, Ian Patterson, said that the Trust had been an integral part of the makeup of rugby in this region and a valuable asset to the union.

“We have been really blessed to have had the support of the Ashburton Trust for 18 years as a principal sponsor and even longer than that as a partner.

“It’s great that they will continue to be a vital part of the rugby union and help to provide the community support for many years to come hopefully.”

naming right sponsor of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union but also the major sponsor of the Heartland rugby side, who tackle Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield in August.

“Agstaff have been with us for a number of years now, mainly in the junior and club rugby sector and have been a key part of that,” Patterson added.

“It’s great to have them step up into the principal role and we are looking forward to working alongside them in the future.”

Agstaff managing director, Matt Jones said his company was delighted to have been given the opportunity to take over the role as principal sponsors, but also paid tribute to the work

of the Ashburton Trust.

“Full marks to them, they have been a great supporter of rugby in this region for a really long time and it’s fantastic to see them continuing to do that in a lesser role too,” Jones said.

“From our perspective we are really excited about it, it’s a great thing to be a part of due to the popularity of rugby in Mid Canterbury and to be able to give back is something we are really conscious of too.”

Jones was presented with the new-look Mid Canterbury jersey at last night’s function which also served as an opportunity for Patterson to give public thanks to the Ashburton Trust for their time as principal sponsor.
