Hoping for quick return to Level 1 By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

It’s better to be safe than sorry. That’s the general feeling in the community around the latest outbreak of community cases of Covid-19 that have sent New Zealand back into Level 2 restrictions. It may not be the feeling if the Covid-19 Level 2 restrictions are extended. Businesses, workplaces and schools had to refresh their memories as to the Level 2 restrictions on Sunday night after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that Auckland was to be in Alert Level 3 and the rest of New Zealand Level 2 for three days until midnight Wednesday. The move was announced by Ardern after three members of a family living in the South Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe tested positive for Covid-19. The snap announcement sent local businesses into a spin on Sunday night to prepare to open under Level 2 restrictions on Monday. Hospitality businesses must keep groups of customers separated, seated, and served by a single person with a maximum of 100 people at a time. It also meant dragging out the sign-in and sanitising stations at the entrance ways. Somerset Grocer owner Mark Milmine said they put the word out through its digital channels on Sunday night reminding people the rules under Level 2 and reinstating all the protocols was easier third time around. “It’s business as usual. “People don’t like having to sign in and don’t like having to be seated, but it is what it is.” While not ideal, Milmine said it serves as a reminder to avoid complacency and people need to be aware and respect the protocols – even if it is just for a few days. “We all need to be on the same page to safeguard the customers and our staff.

same.” Joyce said it was a case of simply dealing with the decision “and if it goes on longer we just batten down and carry on”.

Armadillos at the Braided, which opened earlier this month, has had to postpone its grand opening celebrations that were scheduled for Friday. Operations manager, George Crosbie, said they had brought on extra staff this week to cover working under Level 2 restrictions. Being a recently opened business it was not an ideal situation to have the restrictions in place, he said, but they were working to ensure things “feel as normal as possible and customers feel comfortable”. Sporting organisations have also had to re-enact Covid protocols with the possibility the restriction could extend to the weekend.

However, Mid Canterbury Netball centre manager Erin Tasker said adapting to the Level 2 restrictions had been much easier this time. “In August we were in the middle of our winter competition and a lot of hard work had to be done very quickly to ensure we were in a position to safely restart netball under Level 2 conditions,” Tasker said. “This time around, due to the fact that we knew what to do from last time, and the fact that we don’t have as much netball on at this time of the year, it’s been much smoother sailing so far. “We all just have our fingers crossed that this is a little bump in the road and we’ll be back to Level 1 very quickly.”

Operatic element to Messiah By Malcolm Hopwood

Martin Setchell is determined not to conduct a “stained glass window” Messiah. Handel’s famous oratorio, composed 270 years ago, will be presented in Ashburton with a strong operatic flavour. Handel, a German who became a naturalised British subject, was an opera composer and wrote about 40 during his lifetime. However as the audience’s enjoyment of Italian opera faded, Handel turned to composing choral works from religious texts. Messiah was one of these. However Handel never forgot his musical roots.

“Messiah is an opera with a sacred subject and that’s the way I’m interpreting it,” Setchell says.

performed regularly throughout the world. “I never get tired of it. It’s always fresh. I keep extending my vision of it. It’s the imagery and operatic element that appeals,” Setchell says. Setchell has been involved in about 30 Messiah performances either as a singer, conductor or continuo and organ accompanist. He’s seen it from all the different angles. “It becomes special every time I open a page.” Saturday’s workshop was cathartic. Twelve months ago the choir held an identical workshop but then Covid-19 dashed all hopes of a performance. Now in February 2021, they’re back determined to perform Messiah in Ashburton.

While the oratorio is traditionally presented at Christmas, Setchell contends it’s an Easter work. “The bulk of the work is the passion of Christ and is more associated with his suffering, death and resurrection,” he says. March 28 has been chosen as it comes the Sunday before Easter. Setchell is confident the audience will delight in the music. “If they know it, they’ll love it. If they don’t, it’s going to be a unique experience,” he comments. As for the singers, he has nothing but praise. “I’ve inherited a choir that’s a wonderfully committed group of people with a great administrator. They have a spirit about them and play as a team.”

DISTRICT COURT

Police intervention a ‘wake-up call’ for woman A young woman who assaulted both her parents and stole cash from them has been discharged without conviction. The parents of the woman leaped to her defence during deliberations at the Ashburton District Court on Monday, citing ongoing “drug and mental health” challenges as a major factor in filed submissions. The woman, who was granted name suppression, appeared on six charges including two counts of assault, theft, threatening speak, possession of cannabis and possession of a utensil. The court heard that the woman stole two sums totalling $540 from her parents in an incident dating back to October. A verbal altercation then ensued with her parents where she pushed her mum, causing her to stumble. It is alleged that an argument with her father followed where she threw him against a wall which caused bruising to his ribs. In detailed submissions by the woman’s defence counsel, a difficult background including mental health difficulties and drug use were cited as key components. Submissions included an affidavit from her mother and a letter of correspondence from her father, outlining difficulties in persuading their daughter to engage with mental health and drug and alcohol services. Police intervention was seen as the last resort and a “catalyst for positive change”,

the court heard. Judge Dominic Dravitzki considered the fact that there were “no lasting injuries” to the parents and that there was not a large amount of cannabis found. Her youth, remorse and her absence of previous convictions were other considerations.

Further arguments were made in which aspirations of a career path in early childhood for the woman would be jeopardised and were out of kilter with the gravity of the consequences, which the judge agreed with. She was discharged and urged to continue paying reparations to her parents.

Twin brother remanded after family melee An Ashburton man has been remanded on bail after a family squabble turned violent. Jacob Dean Allan Shefford appeared in the Ashburton District Court on Monday for a sentencing indication where he faced stranglulation and common assault charges. It relates to an incident on October 15 where it was alleged Shefford attacked his twin brother before putting him in a headlock. The court heard that Shefford arrived at his mother’s home intoxicated where he became aggressive and abusive. It is alleged he swung a punch at his mum’s partner before swinging several punches at his twin, causing light bruising to his body. He then proceeded to put his brother into a headlock to the point where he suffered lightheadedness immediately after, as recounted in a victim impact statement. Shefford’s defence counsel pointed out that he had no criminal history and that the unfortunate incident had occurred in a family context. Judge Dravitzki said there were considerations such as his age and his clean history when deliberating on a possible sentence. Shefford was remanded on bail until March 2.

Man ordered to pay reparations to wife of 40-plus years A 69-year-old man has been ordered to pay emotional harm reparations after an altercation with his wife of 47 years. Lindsay Alan Lethaby appeared in the Ashburton District Court on Monday where he faced a charge of contravening a protection order. The summary of facts confirm the Christchurch District Court issued a Final Protection Order back in June 2018. It is alleged the man struck his wife following an alleged argument in their caravan dating back to April last year. The man has been married to the woman for approximately 47 years, the summary of facts said. The man’s lawyer argued for a fine as a preferred punishment as opposed to an electronically-monitored sentence due to the defendant’s heavy work commitments.

The court heard there were two previous offences for assaulting his wife dating back to 2014. The matter was stood down before be-

ing recalled later in the day. Defence counsel argued that the man works between “50 and 70 hours per week” and that he was expected to be assigned to a one month work stint in Blenheim. The man’s previous health concerns were used as leverage. The court heard alleged details of the incident where the man and his wife were in their caravan at the Ashburton Holiday Park in Tinwald before an argument ensued. It is alleged Lethaby, who was sitting on the couch, then smashed a glass which shattered all over the floor near his wife’s feet. He then proceeded to stand up where he struck his wife on the upper right chest, the court heard. She allegedly attempted to use her

hand to prevent him from striking again when he grabbed three of the woman’s fingers and forcefully twisted them backwards. Lethaby then walked out of the caravan before leaving in his vehicle. It is not the first time there has been family violence in the relationship following incidents in August and March 2014. The misuse of alcohol was identified as a factor in the pre-sentence report, Judge Dominic Dravitzki said. “I accept you work long hours. “My concern is that you are back before the court.” He was sentenced to nine months’ supervision, ordered to pay his wife $1000 of emotional reparations and ordered to complete alcohol use and stopping violence programmes to the satisfaction of the probation officer.

Time to speak up about retirement villages

Big Heart Day and big hearts By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz

Methven Preschool turned bright red last week as students and teachers together raised funds for the Heart Foundation. On Friday, the group went big to end the week and encour-

aged everyone to come along in red attire and to give a gold coin to help grow the coffers of the Heart Foundation. Even those who didn’t dress up, were adorned with bright red hearts on the cheeks to ensure everyone was a part of the festivities. “Big Heart Day for us is all

about helping people,” teacher, Rebecca Barr said. Methven Preschool focuses heavily on the belief of healthy foods and movement and they incorporate moving smart in their curriculum to help with development. “Preschool is so important for growth development and help-

ing the kids later in life.” The preschool teaches families and their children on what a healthy lunch box looks like and the group’s favourite type of physical activity is dancing. And so, all the principals across the district will soon have some well-practised, dancing five-year-olds in a few years.

Refresher courses for older drivers

Age Concern Ashburton president Jan McClelland.

Ashburton seniors are responding positively to staying safe on the roads. Age Concern, together with the New Zealand Transport Agency, are holding refresher courses for older drivers across urban, rural and remote areas of New Zealand. The theory-based programme, called Staying Safe, is designed to enhance people’s knowledge, assess their current driving behaviour and build confidence. It’s four hours of classroom-based learning, is interac-

tive and answers any questions seniors might have. Everyone who attends is issued with a certificate and given a workbook to take away. Age Concern Ashburton has already held its first refresher course this year in late January and is holding another fully subscribed course of 20 plus people on March 26. President, Jan McClelland, says further courses will be held throughout the year. Jan is “really pleased” with the response to the first two.

“Our elderly are important to keep safe on the road,” she says. “The courses give them confidence and reminders about safe driving.” The courses, held in the Seniors Centre, are free, although there’s a small charge for refreshments. SuperGold card holders and Maori or Pasifika drivers over 60 are eligible. To book a place people are asked to call 0800 65 2 105, visit www.ageconcerncan.org.nz or ring the local office.

The Retirement Commissioner would like to hear from Mid Canterbury people about retirement villages. Jane Wrightson is talking to the government about a recommended review of the rules and regulations surrounding retirement villages. She’d like to hear from local people living in one or have close friends or relatives resident in a village. “Late last year we released a discussion paper to describe the law and regulations that govern how villages operate, discuss core issues and start a conversation between industry, residents and government about if and where change is desirable,” she said. The discussion paper indicates where further work is warranted. The legislative framework in question includes the Retirement Villages Act 2003, its regulations and the Retirement Villages Code of Practice 2008. One issue of concern is the purchase back of a Right To Occupy unit in a village. Some villages will only pay the original purchase price less their own fee which can be anything up to 25 per cent while others will pay a percentage of how the property has appreciated in value over the years. “One of my statuary obligations under the Act is to monitor the framework’s effectiveness, ensuring it is fair and balanced for both the industry and consumers,” Wrightson said. “Our paper proposes it is timely, effective and efficient for a policy review of all elements of the framework, to be undertaken by the Ministry for Housing and Urban Development (MHUD) with support from my office.” Feedback on the paper closes this month, on February 26. “We’ve heard from a lot of people already and would welcome more input,” she said. Submissions can be made online at www.cffc.govt.nz or via email at consultation@cffc.govt.nz.

Marching to the beat of their own drum By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz

A narrow miss from being caught in the clutches of a change in alert level wasn’t the only reason members of the Ashburton Pipe Band were smiling after the Pipe Band Festival at the weekend. The hugely popular event rolled into town on the weekend and was again subjected to outstanding support from around the wider Canterbury area, both in competitors and supporters – a pleasing result for locals behind the event. “We are really well supported,” Derrick Cullimore said. The 2021 edition of the event marked the 43rd occasion the event had taken place in Ashburton and this year the date was changed from the last Sunday in January to Valentine’s Day to give bands more time to practice and establish themselves. Within those taking part were a number of first-time performers from the six groups who took part.

The small nature of the event means that there’s plenty of support on hand for those taking part for their first time. “It’s always a good competition for the first-timers.” As well as Ashburton there were groups from Timaru and Rangiora and three groups from Christchurch also competed. With a variety of grades and events, Scottish Society won their set and medley grade as well as the open class street march while Canterbury won their grade sets and medley. The Ashburton Pipe Band did not win any trophies this year, but Cullimore said it was a great afternoon with plenty of enjoyment had and a strong base of onlookers watching from the domain. “We are very lucky because if it was one day later, we would have most likely had to cancel.” The next thing on the Ashburton Pipe Band’s agenda is a two-day contest next week in Dunedin. The event will be dependent on the Covid-19 Alert Level situation.

A killer in under three minutes Escaping from a burning house is a matter of life or death. The human body isn’t designed to handle fire, heat, smoke and extreme temperatures. Because of that, Ashburton’s Fire Risk Management Officer, Bevan Findlay, encourages people to develop an Escape Plan. Fire and Emergency New Zealand is into the second week of its national Escape Planning Campaign and Findlay points out that Ashburton is “up with the national average for house fires”. “While we haven’t had a fatality in Mid Canterbury for some time, we get fairly frequent fires, all of which cause damage,” he says. “For that reason, it’s important to have an escape plan for the whole family.” Finlay emphasises that real fires don’t resemble what happens in the movies. In Hollywood blockbusters, people run through the blaze with a clear vision. It just doesn’t happen that way. “It’s the smoke that’s most dangerous. It blocks your sight, makes you disorientated and affects your ability to make sensible decisions,” he said. “It’s thick, black and doesn’t let light through. It’s also very toxic which affects breathing.” Findlay says a house fire isn’t pleasant, it’s very scary.

“In addition, it gets very hot. The temperature in a house fire can reach 1200 degrees Celsius. Your body shuts down at 70 degrees.” He strongly recommends that families develop an escape plan. An ideal way is for both parents, caregivers and children to create a plan for the house and put it on the fridge for everyone to see. That plan should identify the configuration of the house with exits from and entrances to each room clearly marked. “Wherever possible ensure your rooms have two exits. If you have rooms upstairs with only one exit, then have a smoke alarm on every level for complete coverage,” he said. Findlay also recommended that one window stay should be easy to open in case it becomes the main means of escape. If a door to the outside has a deadbolt, then the key should remain in it. Once families prepare an escape plan, they should practise it regularly. If there’s a fire then they instinctively know what to do, he said. “Youngsters are vulnerable, they don’t know what to do so they must be prepared by knowing and practising the family escape plan. “One house fire is one too many. It can kill in less than three minutes.”

Right – The image of the teddy is powerful because it drives home that fires can take the people we love and the things we love, Fire Risk Management Officer, Bevan Findlay says.

Methven was awash with firefighters on Saturday. There were 10 crews in attendance at the Methven Domain, but there was no fire to fight, only each other in the United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA) Waterway Challenge competition. Fire brigades from across the South Island contested the annual challenge with the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade acting as hosts. “We didn’t have a team in ourselves, we just acted as the

host,” Methven chief fire officer Brent Anderson said. “We don’t have a waterways team running at the moment, and haven’t for a number of years, but they approached us to host it as Methven provides a central location.” While the locals weren’t chasing glory in the event it was a big win for the town. “It brought a few people into town for the weekend. “All the comments were that it was a great place to be and things went well.” A UFBA spokesman acknowledged the fantastic southern hospitality of local caterers and accommodation providers and

said they were proud to support local economies. Since 1885, UFBA’s Waterway Challenge has helped firefighters put hose-running and pump-operating skills to the test in a safe, and competitive environment. At the weekend Mossburn came out on top in the two-person event ahead of Mataura and Rangiora, while Kaitangata won the four person event ahead of Greymouth and Mataura. Teams from the South Island competition can now progress to the UFBA National Waterway Competition in Wellington on March 6.

‘Mo’ing the Coast down By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Sorry Richie, close, but no cigar. The Methven Mo Bros returned to the Coast to Coast rejuvenated for action and the multisport pair reaped the rewards accordingly. Stephen “Blackie” Blackwell and Jarrod Coutts, otherwise known as Mo U Down for the latest edition of the multisport race, secured a podium finish in the Coast’s Two Day Tandem event. The duo closed it out in second in the open category and third overall when they crossed the finish line at New Brighton Beach at the weekend. Their time of 13 hours 43 minutes denied the ISport team of Richie McCaw and Rob Nichol a podium spot by two minutes. “We had a 20 minute lead on them on Day 1,” Coutts said. “We just proved too strong in the kayak on the second day and they couldn’t quite make the time up on the bike. “It was quite cool to be a participant against him rather than being a fanboy. “It was really good to have a couple of conversations with both him and Rob because there was a lot of time spent nearby or with them – they’re both good buggers.” After an excellent display in 2020 where competitors were forced into an alternate route, a podium finish was targeted for a return to the annual multisport grind at the weekend. Coutts said the pair made significant gains in the run compared to last year. “Blackie is an absolute machine on the running. “You can’t keep up with him anywhere. “The run through Goat’s Pass is a lot more technical, the scenery is stunning, it’s my favourite track in New Zealand. “Compared to Plan B (last year) it definitely played into our strengths.” As far as a third consecutive appearance, it remains up in the air as to whether Blackwell and Coutts will be back in 2022. “I reckon we could have a good chance of going one step further,” Coutts said. “On the flip-side, I’m strongly considering stepping up to the big boys’ club and doing the One Day race.”

Several podium spots for locals A number of Coast to Coast competitors from Mid Canterbury starred during last week’s annual multisport showpiece. At least half-a-dozen from this district ended their Coast journey atop the podium and it was both the youngsters and the oldies which featured. Rakaia’s Sam Cuttle finished second in the individual Two Day event after finishing in a superb time of 14 hours 14 minutes and placing 29th overall. He was not the only young gun among the Coast competition with fellow Mount Hutt College pupil Anthony Kearvell completing the two day pursuit, despite reports he was battling a knee injury throughout. Garage Fit pair Sommer O’Shea and Kim Turney were the second women’s team home in the Two Day Tandem, finishing in 15 hours 30 minutes and completing a stellar showing for Mid Canterbury in the tandem. The Cranky Classics made up of Hamish Horn, Andrew Luddington and Rachel Schmack won the veteran category in the Two Day Three Person event. Snail Mail pair Emma Murray and Jim Murray, of Methven, finished third in the open category of the Two Person event in the Two Day event, finishing the course in 15 hours 27 minutes. There were other sublime performances among the field. Ashburton’s Michelle Knight was the 12th woman home in the Two Day, while Rob Turney was 8th in the Men’s Classic category. On the elite front, Matt Amos placed 48th overall in the Longest Day race, finishing in 13 hours 38 minutes.

Leath ‘overwhelmed’ with Coast effort By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A lifelong dream for The Longest Day race. The Coast to Coast’s One Day Event became a reality for John Leath where a standout effort ensured expectations were smashed to bits. Leath became the first ever from Ashburton to clinch a podium finish in the Vintage 60-plus category of the Coast’s headline race. And the 60-year-old wants to go one better next year after coming in second in his group with a time of 14 hours 59 minutes, finishing 18 minutes behind Vintage winner Duncan Hamilton. “I want to come first next year,” he said. It is a significant comeback story for the Mid Canterbury competitor after his bid to compete last year unravelled 48 hours out from the 2020 race. “I had a crack at it last year and failed miserably. “I put my back out two days before the race. “I just had to use that as a learning ex-

the two day event, the Longest Day race had been a dream ever since. “I had to eat a bit of humble pie,” he

laughed. “It was tough, it was just really hard coming back.” Under the tutelage of this year’s winner Dougal Allan, a robust plan was put in place for Leath during preparations. And it became especially important after what Leath described as a “tough year” in the lead up to the Coast. “I’ve been injured, I had pneumonia at Christmas time and not training for two and a half weeks. “It hasn’t been an easy road, but at the end of the day we’ve got an amazing result.” Contrary to the physical calamity which transpired last year, Leath yesterday said the body had recovered nicely. “I was a bit stiff yesterday but I could go and race again today.” And while the physical toll had been smooth sailing for Leath, the emotional impact following such an accomplishment has been profound to say the least. “It’s just a bit overwhelming,” he said. “At 3 o’clock Sunday morning the raw emotions set through. “You find yourself talking to people about it and you just get overwhelmed and the tears start rolling.”

OUR VIEW

Lockdown – the right or wrong decision? By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

A

nd so, this week we entered the next phase of the ongoing saga that is Covid-19. A snap lockdown in the north by the Government and a change in alert levels for the rest of the country, thrust into the public sphere just mere hours after the Prime Minister was informed of the cases of community transmission. The cynic will call it an over-reaction of the highest order while many others will just shrug it off and carry on with normal life – doing their bit as a part of the team of five million. That’s Covid though, isn’t it? A great equilibrium on our society where 100 people can walk down a street and hold a hundred different views on what’s right and what’s wrong without anyone actually being at fault. Sadly, there are going to be cases, unfortunately, that will slip through the cracks. Our only hope is that each time they do surface, we’re not faced with a similar circumstance to the past few days where we are all of a sudden thrust into this parallel universe where we feel the need to walk on eggshells as we go about everyday life. The Prime Minister’s catchphrase at the moment is that Kiwis have enjoyed a time unlike anywhere in the world in the wake of this global pandemic and in order to continue to enjoy those pleasures, we must act swiftly and quickly when potential trouble arrives. That’s all well and good. If that’s the plan of attack, then let it be – don’t pander to us by using something almost akin to a guilt trip to justify it. Yes, we’ve been lucky here – but it’s not a smoking gun that can be pointed at us and used with gay abandon – a lot of sacrifices were made, a lot of pain, both mentally and financially, is still being felt around the country and any further tightening of the belt buckle is just cause for further alarm for a lot of people. We’re big kids, living in a big world. If it’s the best thing for New Zealand, then it’s the best thing for New Zealand. But if you feel like you need to justify it, then perhaps it’s the wrong decision in the first place.

Rushing RMA reform could de-rail enduring solutions By Karen Williams FROM THE FARM

T

ortuous processes, interminable delays, eye-watering lawyer and planning consultant bills . . . there are lots of things wrong with the Resource Management Act. The government’s intention to overhaul this legislation was well-signalled and long overdue, but the timetable to do that, announced on February 10, is extremely worrying. The last thing anyone wants is half-baked replacement legislation brought about by rushing the consultation, drafting and careful consideration this hugely important topic deserves. And much as the RMA had its faults, its core purpose of sustainable management, and the principle of balancing environmental, social, economic and cultural needs, are sound. We need to be wary of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Environment Minister David Parker has announced his intention to replace the RMA with three new pieces of legislation before the end of this Parliamentary term, with a special select committee looking at a draft of the main Bill by the middle of this year. This is a critical piece of legislation for New Zealand’s environmental management, and it’s too important to rush and get it wrong. It is not yet clear how and when the community and stakeholders will get to absorb,

Federated Farmers vice president Karen Williams is a firm believer that any change to the RMA needs to be done once and it needs to be done right. consider and submit on the contents of the Bill. Faster planning doesn’t necessarily equate to better planning, and striving for national consistency comes with a range of issues and problems at the local levels, as was clearly seen with the Essential Freshwater regulations last year. From a farmers’ perspective, most of all they need certainty. We need an enduring solution for the RMA, one that can survive a change in government. To

achieve that, we need bipartisan, constructive and sensible discussions and consideration. We need to do this reform once and we need to do it right, so that we avoid yet another frequently amended, complicated and complex beast. Adapting to climate change is another curve ball that has been thrown into the whole land use and environmental protection balancing act. We need a legislative framework that is respon-

sive and adaptable. Comprehensive consultation and engagement specific to this Bill will be vital. It cannot just be a regulation tagged onto the Natural and Built Environment Bill process. In short, we need to think very carefully about this as a nation. There should be plenty of opportunity and time for all sectors of society to have a genuine say, and in the knowledge that

there’s not a pre-determined approach or ideology that would make consultation a sham. Sticking together helps to pull us through F

or many months now, New Zealand has seemingly been the envy of the world, enjoying social freedoms and safety that many can only hope for. Sunday night’s news that community transmission had once again arisen in Auckland was understandably upsetting for our country, but as this pandemic continues to unfold I’m reminded of just how resilient our community is. As we have moved through various stages of the Alert Levels on a number of occasions, we have become better at adapting to those increased safety measures and are more prepared for the transitions that happen, quite literally, overnight. Now under Alert Level 2, many businesses and the council already had the procedures in place to quickly enact those measures – more social distancing, widely available hand sanitiser, more frequent cleaning and displaying QR codes. For residents, it’s also reiterated just how important it is that we are all scanning those codes to trace where we have been, and no matter what level we are at, that needs to continue. As we await the Government’s press conference this evening, I am comforted

that we are a strong community with a proven track record of working together to pull through, and I must commend each and every one of you for playing your part in controlling this pandemic. On another matter concerning our safety, I also wanted to highlight the recent health warnings that have been issued for the Hakatere/Ashburton River at several locations. The Canterbury District Health Board’s Community and Public Health team have issued a warning for the river after discovering toxic algal blooms. People and pets – particularly dogs are advised to avoid the river until the warning has been lifted. The warning is currently in place at State Highway 1, Hills Road and Boundary Road. Council shares these important notices on its new website and on its social media channels. If you haven’t already,

make sure you know about these health warnings as they happen by following the council’s Facebook page @Ashburtondc. By being connected, we can help to get the information out there and ensure as many people are as aware as possible.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): If you had to put today’s problem into a box, then it would be a tiny box. Maybe you can live with this one and learn to see it as a quirk or feature instead of a problem. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Don’t let others frame the situation for you. If you have the feeling of being a piece in a game – played, not player – it’s a sign you need to look carefully at the power dynamics and find your leverage. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): People will be persistent, trying to convince you of what is possible and what is impossible. These are only opinions. What’s your take? That’s the one that matters. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): An exercise: Let your mind do funhouse mirror trickery on a situation and some scary, hilarious and creative ideas come of it. Then leave the funhouse, and the mirrors, and see it in the light of day. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ve been known to think about what would be the most attractive move, and there are other times when you do only what you want. Either way works now, but you have to commit fully to it. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You can’t be vigilant about everything. If you could, you’d be perfect, and perfectly boring, repellent even, because humans tend to like those that are more or less like them, which is to say flawed. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When you’re in it, telling yourself to do the next correct move, courage naturally flows. It is not until later, when you look back, that you will realise just how brave it is to live admirably in daily life. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Being supportive to yourself might not be your first instinct. Sometimes, it’s hard to think of the right ways to coach. Make the effort to figure it out because progress depends on self-encouragement. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You are typically so steady that people around you don’t expect you to change your mind, let alone change it three or four times, but such things are acceptable and natural when finding your way. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You get inspiration from multiple sources – the passing clouds, a picture that triggers a memory, the song on the radio, all channelled into sorting your feelings about someone. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Are you the most qualified person to assess your situation? The jury is still out. An outsider will either help you understand something you didn’t before or validate your own view of it. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): In games of cat and mouse, the mouse needs to disappear sometimes, thereby creating an excited sense of anticipation for the next surprise appearance.

HARVEST TIME

Age no barrier for Grain harvesting a family affair for the Dolans

At 83 years, Phillip Dolan still drives a combine harvester, even if, like him, it is getting a bit old. “The hardest part is getting up into it. “Once I am on the seat I am as good as gold,” he says. The retired Mid Canterbury farmer, who lives in Rakaia with his wife Pam, still helps out on the family property, Seaview Farm, on the coast at Dorie. While the farm converted to dairy in 1996, when son Brendon

took over, they still grow about 70 hectares of barley each year as supplementary feed for the cows. Harvesting the grain is a family affair, with Phillip driving one of two 1976 Massey Ferguson 750 combine harvesters they have on the farm. That’s not the only harvesting machinery, with a 1985 Massey Ferguson 865 and a 1985 International 1460 axial-flow combine also on standby if needed. Mechanically-minded Brendon is a dab hand at keeping them running. “If one breaks down we park it

The hardest part is getting up into it. Once I am on the seat I am as good as gold up and go and get another one. “But we don’t get too many break downs,” Brendon said. “They are easy to drive and not complicated like the latest models.” The ageing combines were cheap to buy as they were too

“I was brought up with Massey Fergusons, so I know how to fix them.” The Massey Ferguson 865 was a wreck when he bought it, and took 200 labour hours to get going again. “The biggest problem is getting the parts. “No dealers stock the parts, but we know some places in the United States where we can get them.” The combine harvesters are well maintained and kept in a shed when not in use.

Three generations of Dolans farming at Dorie (from left) Phillip, his son Brendon and his sons Ryan and Benjamin. From P22

The Dolan family have a long history in Dorie, starting with Phillip’s grandfather, also named Phillip, who farmed on Acton Road after emigrating from Ireland. He bought three farms for his sons, two in Dorie and the other at Bankside, north of the Rakaia River. “He never paid wages, but gave his sons a farm each and in those days you could,” Phillip said. All were mixed sheep and grain farms. As the farm, which has 6km of coastline, adjacent to the Rakaia River mouth huts, struggled during dry years, the Dolans were one of the first in the district to put in an irrigation bore in 1973. People would drive past on a Sunday to look at the irrigators in action, and it wasn’t long before others followed their example. Since then the type of irrigation has changed three times as technology has developed, and they now operate centre pivots.

Brendon said he converted the farm to dairy, milking 1200 cows, in 1996, as there was no money in sheep and crop. The farm is fully self-contained, with a milking platform on half the farm and the remainder used for dairy support, growing supplementary feed, grazing young stock and wintering the milking herd. “No stock are grazed elsewhere.” For the first time this year the farm has a contract milker, with Brendon concentrating fully on farming the support block. Brendon and his wife Catrina’s children are also getting involved, with their eldest son Benjamin, 17, now driving the harvesters. Benjamin is studying automotive engineering at polytechnic, as the Dolans want their children to have other experience before deciding whether to go farming. Benjamin, along with his brothers Daniel, 15, and twins Ryan and Jake, 12, are fifth generation Dolans in the district.

Locals impress on premier night METHVEN

By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Small in stature, but big on impact. That’s probably the best way to describe the current state of affairs in the local harness racing scene currently. Because while not huge in numbers, definitely nowhere near the figures of say a decade ago, there’s still an almighty punch left from horses trained between the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers. And it was clearly evident at Addington last Friday night, when two Mid Canterbury pacers produced two of the most impressive victories on the undercard of a big night of premier action under the lights. And based on their winning performances, it won’t be the last time both Last Of The Mohicans and Ifyousayso find themselves in the action at big meetings in the next 12 months, with one particular four-yearold feature now starting to surely frame in the minds of connections – the Superstars Championship for four-year-old pacers. Both were emphatic winners in similar circumstances, finding the front early and then never really looking back as they ran their rivals into the dirt. Ifyousayso, a four-year-old by Terror To Love, trained by Gerard O’Reilly at Rakaia, produced a seven-length demolition job on a good field in the final race of the night. With O’Reilly sitting in the bike behind him, the gelding dashed clear at the top of the straight and never looked back, to record the third win of his career from just 10 starts. Raced by Mark and Sally Lemon, Ifyousayso is the fifth foal and fourth winner from broodmare Woman In Black, whom they also raced. It’s a family that’s provided a lot of success for the Lemons, with granddam Feisty Woman also proving to be a prolific provider of racing talent. Earlier in the night, exciting pacer Last Of The Mohicans made it three starts for three

RICCARTON

Laurence Hanrahan and unbeaten pacer, Last Of The Mohicans. wins when Ricky May produced a confident drive on the Laurence Hanrahan-trained pacer. Hanrahan has been both astute and patient with his handling of the son of Auckland Reactor, and May’s experience and knowledge in the sulky has without doubt played a big part in his success too. After a tardy beginning on Friday night, May pushed the button and burst his way through to find the front early, and from there never looked back, winning by a length and three quarters untouched in the run to the line. It was a serious statement, and even those who may have been questioning the talent

of the horse raced by Hanrahan, his father Laurence snr, Russell Beardsley and Diana Pye are starting to change their opinions. He was one of two winning drives for May at the meeting. He saluted later in the night in similar circumstances with the talented trotter, B D Yasothon, who led all the way and crushed his rivals. That winning brace, plus victory on Sunday with Braeview Kelly, took the Methven horseman to 2981 career winning drives. O’Reilly is also fast-approaching a couple of milestones. He currently sits on 595 career driving wins, and is 27 wins away from 200 training successes as a trainer.

In a race to the winning post even the barest of margins is enough, and for Ashburton galloper Madam Sequoia, a short head was all that was required at Riccarton on Saturday. The Bevan and Robyn Wilsontrained four-year-old defied her nearly $16 price tag to dig deep with a big finish to win the Rating 65 1200 metre event underneath talented jockey Kin Kwo at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club meeting. Lightly raced, Madam Sequoia has now won two of her nine career starts, and Saturday’s more than $12,000 purse took her earnings over the $20,000 mark. The victory was a firm underline of the training ability of the Wilson duo. Second up following a disappointing run when 10th of 10 at Riccarton at the end of January, the daughter of Redwood looked a different horse on the weekend as she drove past Benaud in the shadows of the post to grab the victory. The win was the second of the season for the training partnership, and the fifth since they joined forces in the 2018-2019 season. From limited numbers, the stable is always one to be respected, especially at Riccarton where they have a particularly strong strike-rate of starters to finishing in the money. Saturday’s feature, the Banks Peninsula Cup was taken out by Southern Ocean for Riccarton trainer Terri Rae, while smart youngster Mozzarella made it two in a row in stylish fashion earlier in the day for trainers Nick Wigley and Kayla Milnes.

Korbyn Newman takes a look to the inside to see he’s got the field covered at Sunday’s Hororata Trotting Club meeting at Methven. Driving Southland pacer Archman, Newman was in sublime form at the meeting winning two races. He saluted on Better Fly from the stable of his boss, Robert Dunn later in the day. Sunday’s meeting was another strong example of grass track racing at its finest with a good crowd on the course. It was slim pickings for the locals however, with Ricky May’s victory on three-year-old filly, Braeview Kelly the only real local success for the day. Harness racing in Mid Canterbury continues next week when the Ashburton Trotting Club holds their annual Sapling Stakes and Hambletonian Day on Saturday, February 27.

Clubs battle it out BOWLS

By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Bowls club supremacy was fought for and ultimately determined on Saturday when the Gala and Challenge cups and Premier and Prestige trophies went on the line across the district. The four tournaments, in which clubs around Mid Canterbury are eligible to put a team in, were held on Allenton, Hampstead and Ashburton greens, with strong competition throughout the day of bowls. It was Ashburton and Allenton who dominated the proceedings, winning two titles each. In the men’s Gala Cup – a cutthroat competition, Ashburton emerged victorious. They beat Hinds in the opening fixture of the day, before defeating Rakaia narrowly in the semi-final. That set them up against Methven in the final after they’d beaten both the Ashburton MSA Club and Hampstead. The Ashburton side were too strong in the final, winning 16-13. The plate final for the Gala event was won by Allenton, who defeated the MSA 13-7. The women’s Premier Trophy went the way of a strong Allenton side, who proved too good for Methven in the first round, while Rakaia defeated Ashburton to set up the final. Allenton were on top early in the final and never looked back, winning 22-8 in a dominant performance. Ashburton defeated Methven in the Plate final. The Challenge Trophy for the men was won by Allenton, who went through the day unbeaten with three wins and a draw from their four matches. They recorded comfortable

Visitors claim Greenkeepers spoils for 2021 The annual Mid Canterbury Greenkeepers Triples were held on Sunday, with a good number of entries splitting across two greens for the day. And while local players might have held visions of grandeur of success, ultimately they had to bow down to outside forces, with victory going the way of Halswell’s Liz Rossiter, who prevailed in the main final over the Colin Dennis-skipped side from the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club. In the playoff for third and fourth, Sandra Holdom’s team were able to outplay Alastair McKenzie’s trio, while Rowan Tonks picked up fifth position over the team skipped by Aaron Allred. Played in perfect conditions, the tournament was again being hailed as a great success by all and sundry.

wins againat Rakaia, Hampstead and Ashburton, but drew 8-all with Methven. Their efforts were enough to get them home in first position over Hinds, who were defeated by Hampstead in the opening match of the day but bounced back with three good wins.

The women’s Prestige Trophy went to Ashburton who also picked up three wins in a draw, incidentally also drawing with Methven, alongside wins over Hampstead, Rakaia and Allenton. Methven ended up second, with a loss to Rakaia in the penul-

Allenton slide further into the mire By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Allenton have fallen to a second straight loss in senior club cricket after another dicey display with the bat. The Mid Canterbury club side were beaten by six wickets by Swannanoa, in another setback for their playoff aspirations. It also followed a promising early phase for Allenton, as their openers provided a steady foundation during the opening 10 overs, having won the toss and elected to set a target. However they lost wickets far too regularly, which stymied their ability to notch a competitive total at the Swannanoa Domain. After openers Karmjeet Singh and Manpreet Hakkla raced to 44 without bother, Swannanoa returned serve dramatically in the space of a couple of overs, as the visitors slid to 46/3. From there, none of the Allenton batting order were able to settle, as the hosts

ran through the middle and lower order routinely. And by the 30th over the innings was all over, Allenton all out for 121. Spinner Chris McGahan proved a handful for the opposition batsmen, taking 3-24 from a six-over spell. Needing just 3 an over, Allenton’s bowlers needed to pull something out of the hat. Like their opponents in the first innings, Swannanoa’s openers enjoyed a steady beginning as they put on 44 before losing their first wicket. Both openers were back in the dugout with the score at 49, however the hosts kept their composure, with David Priest upping the ante with the bat coming in at 70-3. His run-a-ball 34 upheld Swannanoa’s control of the match, despite being dismissed with another nine runs required. In the end, the North Canterbury club completed a comfortable win and their third on the trot. For Allenton, it’s simply back to the drawing board.

Classic a great success By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

With a record number of entries, a strong line up of players from across the region, and further afield, and some near-perfect golfing conditions across two days the Harvey Norman Classic was only ever going to be one thing in 2021. A resounding success. Organisers and competitors alike were hailing the annual two-day tournament on Sunday night and into Monday after a really enjoyable and competitive, but fun, two days of golf on the Brandon Links. The 224 players who stretched across a number of categories, including men and women and mixed pairs, was as high as any one can remember the entries reaching, and while the logistics of keeping play flowing with that many people out on the course was always going to be a challenge, it seemingly went off without a hitch. two days, the competition was, as predicted, a cut-throat affair and went down to a countback to find the overall winners. Blair and Daniel Snowball emerged victorious with a score of 125 on a countback from Matt Tait and Ryan Cockburn. Daphne McDonnell and Alan Anderson took out the mixed title, just ahead of Catherine and Chris Knight while Judith and Nicki Webb won the women’s section. The men’s title was won by Tait and Cockburn in a tightly-spaced top five with James McFarlane and Tom Blacklow, Shane Beavan and Gordon Crawford and Robbie Bell and Graham Gunn only a few points behind. Not just about the golf, the tournament has moulded itself into a social occasion as well, with great camaraderie and togetherness in the clubrooms after the clubs have been put away – a further indictment of why the event is becoming a must compete event for many golfers around the Canterbury region.

Age Concern Ashburton

Our Staying Safe Driving Course held on Friday 22 January was attended by 25 people who found the presentation most informative, and had the traffic officer, Steve Bergerhout, still in discussion at 3pm, when the packing up had occurred all around them. We have another of these scheduled for 26 March. It is fully subscribed, but we do have a waiting list and no doubt nearer the time, cancellations will make some spaces available. Mary Harrison has 8 sessions of 50+ beginning on Friday 9 April, 10am at the Seniors Centre. All welcome for fellowship, a cuppa and a speaker. Enquiries welcome at the Age Concern office 308-6817. Steady As You Go classes are experiencing good numbers for the New Year and we encourage participation in this very successful programme. Co-ordinator, Dianne Moss, has been constantly enrolling new members and visiting all venues to support the groups. Our Courtesy Drivers have been greatly utilised over recent weeks. This service is available through phoning the Age Concern Office, 308-6817, as is Total Mobility assessment for half price taxi fares for those with disabilities.

Ashburton Altrusa

As we start the New Year we reflect on our 2020 Christmas Tree of Remembrance in the Arcade in December, allowing the public to place a named star to remember someone not with us at Christmas. Proceeds will go to Palliative Care in Ashburton. Our members enjoyed a Beckley Mystery Bus Trip at the end of January, visiting parts of Canterbury that some of us hadn’t visited previously. Highlights included seeing the gorgeous colours of gerberas and roses at K&L Nurseries in Springston, and lunching in Leeston at the Coop and Barrel Restaurant. We look forward to the “IFF Day” (Information, Fun and Fellowship), welcoming Altrusans from further afield, to be held in Ashburton, later in February, transferred from 2020. Preparations for our Fabric and Craft Bazaar to be held on the 10th April are well in hand, with contributions from many in the Ashburton Community measured and prepared for sale. We met our Health Bursary recipient for 2021, Maria Costas, whose impressive CV shows her dedication to the community, and her ambitions for a career in the health service. The next Foot Clinic will be operating on the 11th March.

Ashburton 9 Holers

The weather was beautiful last week, so a good number of members gathered to play Round 1, Heather Smith Trophy - a stableford sponsored by Sega Golf. The winners were Gavin Johnston with 19 points and Don McLeod and Robynne Nicholl with 18 points. Kath Read scored a Smith & Church gobbler. On Thursday February 18 we’ll play a stroke round sponsored by Netherby Pharmacy and on 25th February, our annual 9 Hole Tournament takes place.

Ashburton Bowling Club

The past 24 hours have changed our world yet again! And the decisions will start for our bowling administrators, whose job it is to follow the protocols set out but our bowling world’s governing body. And, in line with any further restrictions that could be laid down by the Government at short notice. Therefore, a truncated report for this week and all pending results and news will be communicated next week. In the Gala Cup (Men) held at Hampstead on Saturday 13th, Ashburton def. Methven 16-12. In the Premier Trophy (Women), Ashburton def. Methven 16-12 for the Premier Plate. In the Prestige Trophy (Women), (played at Ashburton) the result was: Winners - Ashburton with 3 wins, 1 draw, +26 diff., 26 ends; the Runners Up – Methven with 2 wins, 1 draw, +16 diff., 22 ends. Congratulations to all our winning men and ladies! Well played! And a big thank you to our own club and other host clubs for the presentation of the greens and morning and afternoon catering. A huge effort, well done! At the club’s rollover triples also on Saturday, 13th, the winners were G Taylor, C Cross; 2nd were D Murcott, D Taylor, A Gibson. Good (Level 2) Bowling everyone but take care and stay safe!

Lynnford Rural Women

Frida Wood had the honour of opening the 2021 golf season at the Methven Golf Club.

Ashburton Golf Club

Well, I can honestly say, that was one of the best weekends that I have ever had at the golf club. From 7am Saturday morning until 8pm Sunday night, it was just a wonderful fun filled weekend. The weather played its part, the course was immaculate thanks to Ben, Josh, Neil, Dave and all their many, many helpers. Terry and Tom are brilliant organisers, and everything fitted in perfectly. Gordon, Clarrie and Merv were again amazing in the starters box. Getting over 220 players around the course to good time was a great feat. Vicki and the girls were superb in the results office. Dee, Sonia and Sheryl kept us very well hydrated and the Spit roast company kept us well fed. Raffle and Calcutta sellers, ball spotters, BBQ cooks, Matt Davis the Pro and all the other helpers. Thank you all for a sterling effort. We must praise our great sponsors. Harvey Norman and Vision insurance have been with us for around 10 years. We get new sponsors every year and others just keep coming back and helping whenever we ask. We truly are blessed as a club to have so many great friends. Please make sure you give back where you can. The full sponsors list is in the clubrooms. In the results, the Snowball boys Blair and Daniel took out the major prize on countback from Ryan Cockburn and Matt Tait. Daphne McDonnell and Alan Anderson took out the Mixed Pairs title, whilst Judy and Nicky Webb won the Ladies. Many other pairs and players picked up great prizes, vouchers from Harvey Norman, Sega Golf, Harveys Bake House and Ton’s Thai were gladly accepted. On the raffle, Brendon Davidson showed that it is always better being lucky rather than skilful, picking up a brand new Titliest golf bag. For me the best part of the weekend was the after-golf on Saturday evening. Alex Toa got himself $250 with a great chip in. Ross Chatts held a great Calcutta auction. Then the music got turned up. Young Bev gave us an impromptu Yoga lesson. Someones dicky hip seemed to cure itself after a couple of beers and a microphone was handed over with Elvis playing, and if you have never seen Bruce dance then you must put it on your bucket list. I reckon its up there with the Norwegian Northern lights and sunset over the Pyramids. Ok, everyone, take a breather. Then we will kick on for the Interprovincials. Till next time good golfing

Ashburton MSA Petanque

2021 has started out well for us with good turn out on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We ran a “Practise” competition to give our members an opportunity to see what it was like to be taking part in a real tournament. This turned out very popular and is something we will do again at a later date. Our regular Tuesday competition has started with good numbers, and we run social games on the same day, and this works well for all levels of players. We had 5 players take part in the Arthur Diaper Tournament at Papanui with Adair and Colin Jones coming 2nd in the Plate and Ellen Pithie and Jonny Wright 3rd, and the Bowl was won by Shelagh Field and partner. The Clubs NZ Doubles that were put off

last year was played the following day with Shelagh Field and Ellen Pithie coming 2nd in the Bowl. We had 4 players take part in the Alan Pickard Doubles at Ascot. Johnny Wright and partner were Runners up, and Jan Guilford and partner won the Plate. Three of our players participated in the NZ Open at Herne Bay. With their partners Neville Bensdorp was 3rd in the Championship, Karen Bensdorp 3rd in the Consolante, and Richard Browne won the Plate. Saturday we held our first Club competition for the year the Presidents Mixed Triples with 18 members taking part. This was won by Jan Guilford, Francie Osborne, and Neville Bensdorp. Runners up Ellen Pithie, Johnny Wright, and Cory Harnett. Third was Joan Healey, Shelagh Field, and Colin Jones. Our Tuesday Club Day this week was cancelled due to the Covid 19 level two lockdown, as many of us are of the age group where we need to be more careful about looking after ourselves. All Bridge deals present their own unique challenge and this Thursday night hand is no exception, Dealer, east, will pass, as will south and west, leaving north to open one No Trump. While partnerships using transfers will see south bid two diamonds requiring north to bid two hearts and become declarer. The case in question is not using transfers over a 1 no trump opening, so south will play the hand in two hearts. West, on lead, chooses the Club A followed by the 10, taken by East’s K and the Club Q is played, west discarding a Diamond. It is what happens next that is the deciding play! East continues with the Club 7, south plays the J and west must force south to use one of dumm’s two hearts by ruffing with a low heart. Can you see why this is such a successful strategy? Now, south can take on one finesse towards the Heart A in his hand, so both the Heart K from west and the Heart Q from east will take tricks. If west ruffs high with Heart K leaving dummy’s Heart 10 and nine intact, south can now finesse twice through east’s Heart Q which is unable to take a trick in this situation. When south looks to play the diamond suit, the K is with east and the contract is one light. The question could be asked “how does west know that his partner has the Heart Q?” He doesn’t but best defence play is to create opportunities for taking the contract light and this line of defence does just that.

After a break of two months, 15 members of the Lynnford Rural Women had their first meeting of the year on home ground. We met in the St. Luke’s Co-operating Parish Church in Hinds. While we waited, Betty Wilson played the Pipe Organ for us Barbara gave us a talk about the history of the Church which late last year celebrated the 100 years of the Pipe Organ in the Church on which has a plaque commemorating the fallen soldiers of WWI. In 1988, it was renovated and moved from the front of the Church to the back, closer to the door. The stained glass window and the Cross on the Altar were dedicated to the Studholme family of Coldstream. Betty moved to the newer organ and played familiar hymns for members to sing and finally the Rural Women’s song, which is not very often sung, so most needed a song sheet. All enjoyed the experience of singing it. The Anglican Parish later combined with the Presbyterian Church and on display Barbara had brought out the plaque for the Presbyterian Soldiers who fell in the First World War. We then moved into the Church Hall for our meeting. Marian reported on the successful concert held in Timaru for Life Education Trust. A discussion was held on the celebration of the 85th birthday of the Branch. Further information to be given at the next meeting. Rosaleen gave a report on her experience on setting up Internet banking for the Branch which will be a new experience for all. Meals on Wheel for the Branch falls during Easter, so members will not be needed until October. Members who wished, could help other branches during that week. Joan and Bev gave their report on the recent Provincial Meeting. Next meeting to be advised.

Methven Golf Club

Frida Wood had the honour of opening the 2021 golf season at the Methven Golf Club. Sharon and Clinton Burrell-Smith won the Jubilee Trophy on opening day of the 2021 season at the Methven Golf Club. They combined well to record a nett 611/2 to win by four shots from Fay Redfern and Ian Lucas. Men’s Captain Piers Rolton welcomed the 50 players and wished them well for the coming season. Then promising young golfer Frida Wood, on behalf of President, Pete Wood, hit a great drive straight down the fairway to begin the 2021 season. The warm weather and superb course conditions allowed for some good scoring. Marc Davies took the honours in the single person draw with a nett 66. He was closely followed by Jim Rooney and Athol McAlpine. A BBQ followed to ensure a great start for the season. On Friday the 9 holers had a successful bring a friend day. From reports several of the friends showed that they had lost none of their skills after many years away. Well done. The previous Friday the players enjoyed a morning at Lake Hood playing the par 3 course as a nice change. The Ladies have their first competition day for the season on Wednesday with the Men on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club

President Avis welcomed members to the first meeting for the year recently, the National Anthem was sung. Best wishes were extended to Dot Font who has her 97th birthday soon. Also birthday wishes to another member who was a Valentine’s Day baby. Members were reminded of the bus trip to Christchurch on 23 March 2021. The raffle was drawn. After morning tea the speaker was the Co-ordinator of Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren. She told us she looks after three grandsons, otherwise they would have gone into foster care. At times it is a challenge, counselling is provided, but there are lots of rewards. Children need to feel safe. There are 20 local families looking after grandchildren. Their group meets once a month. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust NZ is a registered Charitable Trust operating throughout New Zealand providing support services to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren on a full-time basis. Their aim is to support

grandparents, grandchildren and whanau to achieve positive outcomes in their lives. Julie extended thanks to the speaker on behalf of the club. The thought for the month – We don’t meet people by accident, they are meant to cross our path for a reason. The Friendship Club offers support to people who are looking for friends and fellowship. We have coffee mornings, meetings with interesting speakers, bus trips and more. If you would like to make new friends please phone Avis 308 6539 who would love to hear from you.

Netherby Women’s Institute

Our President Adrienne Hodson welcomed 24 members plus Mavis Wilkins to our General Meeting on February 6 2021 at the Seniors Centre. Motto for the month was “Hats off for the past, and sleeves up for the future”. Barbara Danielson read an amusing piece for Golden Threads “A Nun walks into a construction site”. If you want to read it, just Google it. Happy Birthday was sung to 3 ladies with birthdays in January and February. Members and friends were thanked for delivering Meals on Wheels earlier in the month and also the 2 ladies that delivered flowers to the Hospital. Raffle was won by Wendy Petrie. This year is the 100th anniversary of W.I.’s in New Zealand, where several celebrations will be held throughout the country. Members were reminded about 2 forthcoming functions that the Mid Canterbury Federation are holding. Firstly Founders Day on Monday 22nd February at the Plains Museum at Tinwald at 10.45 a.m. The 2nd one is their AGM on February 26 at the Seniors Centre starting at 9.30am, where we are asked to dress as in pre 1940s. We will be celebrating our 57th birthday on Friday February 12 with lunch at Speights. A good selection of flowers were on display for the floral competition with the Moylan Trophy being won by Barbara Danielson and the Northchurch Trophy by Catherine Thomas. After a short break we moved onto the Annual General Meeting. Minutes from the 2020 annual meeting were read and passed as was the annual report for the year. Mention was made of the Covid pandemic which disrupted our schedule for the year. Valmai Mitchell, our retiring Treasurer presented the Annual Statement of Income and Expenditure for the year. Cora Petrie was presented with a 50 year badge by Mavis Wilkins. Mavis took the chair for the Election of Officers. President: Adrienne Hodson, Secretary: Catherine Thomas, Treasurer: Denise Clark & Rosie O’Brien, Committee: Barbara Danielson, Joan Henderson, Patsy Huggins, Glenda Monk and Barbara Burst will remain in charge of Competitions. Monthly Competitions results for the year were: Flowers: 1st Barbara Danielson 2nd Barbara Burst, Cooking: 1st Catherine Thomas 2nd Adrienne Hodson, Craft: 1st Barbara Burst 2nd. Nancy Christey, Photos: 1st Catherine Thomas 2nd = Barbara Burst & Barbara Danielson, Jean Turton Trophy for most points for the year was won by Barbara Danielson. Meeting close at 3.30pm followed by afternoon tea.

Tinwald Garden Club

On Thursday 28 January 2021, a planned visit to Avonmore Farm to see quinoa and other grains, bees and sunflowers, was cancelled due to predicted inclement weather. Instead, we carpooled and travelled to Methven to visit Flow Pool and Studio. Twenty-one members and one visitor enjoyed viewing this very tranquil place - the majority of us not knowing of its existence. The business is set in 20 acres with beautiful views of Mt Hutt, and surrounding farmland. They offer Pilates, yoga and dance in a large studio. Also, a hydrotherapy pool and float cabin. Outside is a spa pool and infrared sauna. Consultations can be arranged with a chiropractor, physiotherapist and/or dietitian. The pool area, and outdoor spa and sauna can be hired for a private function, and drinks and nibbles enjoyed on the deck, with outstanding mountain views. This business can cater for everyone’s needs, whether they’re recovering from surgery, working on fitness, or wanting to relax or socialise with colleagues or friends. It was a very impressive retreat and I think everyone enjoyed learning what is on offer so close to home. We finished the outing off with afternoon tea at Cafe 131 in Methven.

A strong southeast flow over New Zealand eases today as a low to the east of the North Island continues to move away. Meanwhile a high over the south Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the South Island. The ridge of high pressure builds over the country tomorrow and persists through the weekend.

Tinwald Cycling Club competitors took to the picturesque Terrace Downs-Lake Coleridge course on Sunday to contest the Jasma Farm, 45km handicap event. Paul Williams excelled on the rolling course with a field-splitting climb mid race. Williams made a bold move in the second half of the race and soloed to the finish line to deservedly record a long awaited victory. Chris Reid will also be pleased with his

weekend’s efforts, taking the second place spoils. Mark Smitheram produced another solid ride to secure the final podium position. Richard Kirwan led in the chasing bunch to take fourth place, with Neil Wylie and Gary Weston rounding out the top six. Christchurch visitor Scott McDonnell recorded the fastest time, covering the distance in 64.48. Kyle Gray and Glen Gould recorded sec-

ond and third time respectively. The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap event. Daniel Gould pulled out a top shelf ride on the hilly country to take the win. His little sister Sarah held on gamely to secure second place. Ella Turnbull finished off the race strongly to claim the third place spoils. Scratch marker Mitch Brookland secured fourth place and fastest time hon-

ours, riding the course in 26.09. Penny Marriott and Zac Brookland filled out the top half dozen. Janette Hooper had the final say in the charge to the line to claim division 2 honours. Brian Ellis was in second place with third place getter Kenny Johnston recording fastest time. Next week the club will contest a 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block.
