People all over the world have been left in shock, including many in Ashburton, after attacks in Paris killed at least 129 people and injured hundreds of others on Saturday (New Zealand time). Ashburton resident Emma Jaillet-Godin, who is originally from France, said when she first heard about the situation she spent a long time watching the news. “I was really angry and sad. “I was sad definitely for all the people that have lost their lives for no reason and angry because those people – now that we know it’s ISIS – they just kill civil-

ians for what they think is right for themselves. “It’s just taking the lives of innocent people.” Miss Jaillet-Godin’s best friend, cousin, uncle and aunt all live in Paris and she spent Saturday trying to find out if each of them were alright. Her friend and cousin had luckily both gone away for the weekend and she received a call from her mother to say her uncle and aunt were fine, she said. “Being overseas I feel really helpless. “Even if something had happened to one of my family or friends I couldn’t have done anything.”

Although the attacks had come as a shock for Miss Jaillet-Godin, she had expected something like this to happen with the climate and relationship between some countries in Europe. “I’d like to think it wouldn’t happen again but I think it will.” It might not be Paris, it could be anywhere in Europe, she said. France would stay strong and continue to follow their values and beliefs, she said.

Dan took Hansen’s advice Dan Carter has confessed it was advice from rugby coach Steve Hansen that led him to agree to strip off and pose in his underwear for Jockey. During an interview with Newstalk ZB’s Jack Tame, the 33-year-old former All Black was asked what had prompted him to disrobe for the company. He revealed it was few wise words from Hansen that change his mind. “I was just sitting on an aeroplane next to Steve Hansen, of all people, and I told him about it and he was like, ‘do you want to do it,’ and I was like, ‘no not really’ and he goes ‘well what are they offering’ so I told him and he goes ‘well if you don’t want to do it why don’t you go back and ask for three times what they are offering and if they say no then you don’t want to do it anyway and if they say yes then you are creaming it’.” Carter took the rugby stalwart’s advice and proposed a new deal to Jockey who “weren’t too happy”. “But sure enough they went for it and it was the start of a fantastic relationship, one that still lasts today.”

Producer to sue Clarkson A television producer who was punched by former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson is suing him and the BBC for racial discrimination. Clarkson and BBC representatives attended a hearing at the weekend at a London employment tribunal with Oisin Tymon which centres on alleged verbal abuse, the broadcaster said. Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper reported at the time that the row was over a missing meal and that Clarkson had called Tymon a “lazy, Irish” expletive. The BBC’s press office said in a statement: “We will be responding to this claim but will not be commenting further at this time.”

Paris victims ‘should have had guns’ Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump says the terror strikes in Paris that killed at least 129 “would have been different” if civilians had been armed. “When you look at Paris, toughest gun laws in the world, nobody had guns but the bad guys,” he said on the 2016 campaign trail in Texas, after a moment of silence for the dead in Saturday’s attacks on the French capital. Trump, 69, a billionaire real estate developer who admits he sometimes carries a gun to protect himself, added: “Nobody had guns. And they were just shooting them one by one, and then they broke in and had a big shootout and ultimately killed the terrorists. And I will tell you what - you can say what you want, if they had guns, if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry, it would have been a much, much different situation.” Trump also insisted that US cities such as Chicago, where there are tight gun control laws, see higher rates of violent crime as a result. In the aftermath of the Paris attacks, Trump and US senator Ted Cruz called on the administration to reconsider plans to allow thousands of Syrian refugees to be resettled in the United States. The White House aims to increase to 10,000 the number of Syrian refugees accepted in the US during fiscal year 2016, from less than 2000 accepted in the previous year. Republican primaries are set to begin in February.

McCaw announcement soon All Black legend Richie McCaw could be set to announce his retirement from rugby this week. The 35-year-old captain will reportedly tell the New Zealand public on Thursday he is going to hang up his rugby boots for good. Throughout the World Cup, McCaw stayed hush on his future and said he was simply concentrating on the task at hand. Asked whether he would throw away his running shoes or relax his diet once he retired, McCaw said he had not thought much about how he would reward himself. “To be honest, I’ve been really tough on myself in terms of not looking past today,” he said after the final. “But I am going to enjoy not worrying about those sorts of things. I love going for a run because it makes you feel good, but nice not having to. Not having in the back of your mind every day, ‘what do I need to do’ to make sure I’m right for whatever down the track.”

Wiggles head to the pub Kids of the 90s better start practising their Hot Potato dance moves because the original Wiggles members are getting back together for an over-18s pub gig. Blue wiggle Anthony Field, who is the only original member still performing in the children’s band, has put a call out on Twitter. “Anyone be interested in attending a pub gig, for over 18s Original Wiggles Reunion next year. Played live and loud! It’s for a great charity?” Field tweeted to his 94,000 followers. “Great response! No Kiwis hurt in Paris attacks BY ISAAC DAVISON No New Zealanders have been hurt or killed in terror attacks in Paris, Prime Minister John Key has confirmed yesterday. “The advice we’ve had from the French Foreign Ministry is that there are no New Zealanders that have been killed or injured as a result of the terror attacks,” he said at a press conference in Hanoi, Vietnam. “So that’s obviously very, very good news. But our hearts go out to those families who have been so badly affected.” Mr Key spoke to the New Zealand ambassador in Paris James Kember to express his “deep con-

cern” and asked him to pass his message to the French Government. The Prime Minister said the world was watching France to see what actions it could take to find out who was responsible for the attacks. “I know ISIS has claimed responsibility but these people don’t act alone. The networks that have supported them in their terror attacks will be the next step.” He said it would be important in a large city like Paris to restore confidence as quickly as possible. That confidence would only come back when residents knew the terror cells had been broken and any suspects arrested.

Mr Key’s daughter Stephanie lives in Paris. He spoke to her on Saturday. At the time of the terror events, she was in a shopping mall and was not close to any of the attacks. “I think it’s fair to say that they’re all feeling pretty heavily shaken by what’s taken place. It’s a frightening experience.” She had originally planned to go to a movie theatre near where one of the attacks occurred. “It’s fortuitous,” he said. “But in the end while I care deeply about her as her father, but in reality my thoughts are obviously with those who have been directly affected.” She had told him that aside from the Stade de France, all of

the spots that were hit were popular with locals but not tourists. “So it’s quite a well-planned attack by these people.” Mr Key had told his daughter to be careful and sensible. But he was not concerned that her presence in Paris was a security risk for New Zealand and he would not be asking her to return. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has changed its travel advisory for Paris, telling travellers only to head there if they had urgent business. “But … it’s a very big city … and a gateway point into Europe and I would expect that New Zealanders relatively quickly will want to get back to business as normal.”

There were around 300 New Zealanders registered with MFAT in Paris, though the number was likely to be much higher. Speaking about New Zealand’s role in fighting ISIS, Mr Key said the Government had not considered any policy changes at this early stage. The deployment of military trainers to Iraq would not be expanded or reduced. If ISIS’ involvement was verified, Mr Key expected a broader discussion between countries about the rise of attacks which were linked to the extremist organisation. These included previous attacks in Egypt and Tunisia. - NZME

Victims of road traffic accidents were remembered during a small ceremony in Ashburton yesterday. Ten people gathered in the rain to commemorate World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at Smallbone Reserve. The event had been organised by the Ashburton District Council for the past four years but this time it was facilitated by St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Organiser Dellwyn Moylan said they wanted to hold the memorial as a way to honour victims and their families and as a thank you to emergency services who attended each vehicle collision. “We felt it was an important event for the community.” Speeches were made by Miss Moylan, Reverend David Brown, John Tyrell of St John, Charlie Kelland of the New Zealand Fire Service and Margaret Anderson of Ashburton Hospital. The ceremony concluded with laying of petals around several trees that had been planted during last year’s event.

Ashburton mourns From P1 Miss Jaillet-Godin said she found the support of countries from all over the world “beautiful” with monuments being lit up and messages sent but people also needed to remember other victims like the, at least, 41 who died in an attack in Beirut last week. “We shouldn’t forget that it’s also happening in other countries.” Another Ashburton woman, who did not want to be named, spent several hours worried about her uncle, aunt and two cousins who live in Paris. Her uncle and cousins were fine but her

aunt was caught up in the crossfire outside Le Petit Cambodge where 14 people were shot dead while dining outside. As she walked past the restaurant, which is around the corner from her house, she heard what she thought were fireworks and people were falling to the ground and not getting up. She kept walking and was grazed on the neck by something, which was probably a bullet, the Ashburton woman said.

Controlling wasp problem By SuSan SandyS

Birdlife in Mid Canterbury foothills beech forests has declined due to wasp infestation, and it’s about time that changed. So says Barry Austin, the new chairman of the Mt Somers Walkway Society. He is looking forward to working with the Department of Conservation this coming summer using a newly-approved poison

in order to control the insects. “We definitely need to use it up there because the wasps are real bad after Christmas, it’s keeping people away,” Mr Austin said. While he and fellow society members had been working in the area on one day recently, they had heard only one bird, and he believed this was mainly due to wasps having competed with birdlife for food.

Once wasps were under control, the focus could then turn to controlling other pests such as stoats and rats, he said. The Department of Conservation approved the use of protein baits with fipronil as a tool to control wasps on public conservation land earlier this year, after a successful pilot programme last summer. Mr Austin said he had not received information from the de-

partment yet on whether staff would lay the bait in the Mt Somers Walkway area, or whether volunteers would be able to receive training to do this. A department spokesperson said no decisons on this had yet been made, and the department was “at the early stages of investigating the limited control of wasps at popular recreation sites around Mount Somers” this summer.

■ ASHBURTON HOSPITAL

Hospital rebuild starting to take shape To the untrained eye, it may not look like much progress has been made on the rebuild and refurbishment at Ashburton Hospital. But it has. Project manager Joe McCarthy took the Guardian’s Erin Tasker and Tetsuro Mitomo on a site tour to check out progress. A state-of-the-art building – the main part of the $8.7 million rebuild and refurbishment at Ashburton Hospital – will soon start to take shape. After months of unavoidable delays during the demolition of the buildings that once housed the hospital’s theatre and outpatients services, the first sod was turned at the site of the new Acute Assessment United (AAU) and theatre building on October 21. The foundation work is now well under way, and in a month’s time the concrete slab should be completed, ready for construction to begin. What will then take shape will be a new, 1050sqm, state-of-theart theatre and AAU, with a central nurses station making it an ideal, integrated space, project manager Joe McCarthy said. The old theatre block and outpatients buildings were closed due to earthquake risk in the summer of 2011/12, and the refurbishment and rebuild plan was revealed in June 2013. The project was originally due to be completed at the end of

Local man arrested An Ashburton man was arrested and charged with assault during a domestic incident on Tancred Street at 1.20am on Saturday. A woman was also arrested and charged with assaulting police during the same incident.

Domestic incident A 17-year-old Ashburton woman was issued with a Police Safety Order following a domestic incident at 10.30pm on Friday.

Prison stabbing A 27-year-old inmate was taken to hospital yesterday morning in a serious condition after he was stabbed up to 15 times. The man was assaulted by two other inmates at Auckland Prison high security D-block in Paremoremo, and was taken to Auckland City Hospital. Corrections Association of New Zealand organiser Beven Hanlon said about 11 corrections officers intervened in the incident. Mr Hanlon said there were staff on the landing when it happened, who had access to stab proof vests and were able to stop the assault. - NZME

Santa has arrived Santa Claus has arrived in town above the newly revamped Farmers shop on Queen St. With less than six weeks to go before the big day, the iconic Queen St Santa was put in place, with his two reindeer, yesterday. His arrival in Auckland City kicks off the festive season. The Farmers Santa Parade is two weeks away on November 29 at 1pm. A minute’s silence

After months of unavoidable delays, the first sod was turned at the site of the new Acute Assessment United and theatre building. PHOTO TETSURO MITOMO 121115-TM-029 last year, but unexpected delays – mainly due to the finding of asbestos – have pushed that finish line out to mid-2016. When it is finished, the new building will link into the old part of the hospital through existing corridors, and be state of the art, Mr McCarthy said. While the previous building housed two theatres, this one will hold just one – but it will be top of the line – and a recovery area. The new building will be one level, but a new lift is being installed – the piles for which have been installed over the past few days – to connect it to the second level of the refurbished ward block C (the old Ward 3 or surgical ward). The existing ambulance bay will also be moved, although not

far, to become part of the new section. The main entry to the hospital will still be via the current main entrance, but all inpatients will get to experience the new and improved version of the hospital, with all inpatient beds to be housed in either the new building, or the refurbished section of the new hospital. In that refurbished section, known as block C, progress is now being made inside after the exterior painting and roofing was completed earlier this year. Hours of painting have been completed in rooms and corridors, and new lino has been installed, as has a new, state-ofthe-art nurse call system. “It will serve the whole building, upstairs and downstairs, and

provides an emergency contact system with the maternity wing,” Mr McCarthy said. The sluice room and medication room in block C have undergone a major makeover, and the block has been substantially rewired, with additional technology and data points installed, along with new emergency lighting up to the latest standard, Mr McCarthy said. The main driver behind the work may have been structural, and when complete the new building will be rated IL3 in terms of standing up to earthquake safety standards, but thanks to endless tins of paint and rolls of flooring, by the middle of next year Ashburton Hospital will look completely different both inside and out.

About a hundred people, mostly French now living in Dunedin, have gathered in the Octagon to support the victims of terrorist attacks in the French capital. The vigil was organised by local French language and culture group Alliance Francaise de Dunedin. The group has organised a minute’s silence at noon today Paris time (12am Tuesday NZ time) by the peace pole in front of the Otago Museum. A second minute’s silence will be held at 12pm on Tuesday for people who cannot make the first one. - NZME

Rotorua stabbing A 44-year-old man was stabbed overnight at an address in the Rotorua District. A 16-year-old boy is being sought in relation to the incident, police said. The incident happened around 4am and the injured man was taken to Rotorua Hospital from an address in Old Taupo Rd, Utuhina. Police said the boy being sought in connection to the incident was related to the victim. - NZME

An Ashburton resident’s life changed dramatically when she was admitted to hospital on New Year’s Eve 19 years ago. Ruth Clucas was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes at the age of 50. Ms Clucas said she wanted to share her story to raise awareness during Diabetes Action Month. When she first found out, she was shocked and had to make a number of changes in her life. She had always worried about diabetes but never thought it would happen to her. The main changes were to make sure her diet was better and to exercise every day. “You sort of learn to live with it to a degree.” Earlier on, she was not always as careful as she needed to be but got better over the years. “As time has gone on I got a wee bit more vigilant. “I make sure I do some exercise every day.” She also has to be aware of what she eats and has learnt to read exactly what is on the label. “You can basically eat most

people had to be medicated and watch their health for the rest of their lives, Ms Clucas said. The main cause of Type 2 Diabetes was inactivity and a poor diet but many often did not want to know this, she said.

“People don’t really think it’s an issue.” However, if people were vigilant it could be well managed. Ms Clucas is the secretary for the Ashburton branch of Diabetes New Zealand.

Vincent rejected An application to become a volunteer firefighter from troubled former cricketer Lou Vincent has been rejected by the New Zealand Fire Service due to his involvement with the Cairns trial. Vincent applied to become a volunteer firefighter in Raglan, west of Hamilton in the Waikato Fire Service area, commander Roy Breeze confirmed. But due to his role as a witness at the current trial of former player Chris Cairns, at the Southwark Crown Court in London, the application was denied. The Cairns trial has been ongoing for six weeks - the former Black Cap is charged with perverting the course of justice and perjury, after a High Court libel trial in London where Cairns won damages of $174,000 and costs of $775,000 against former Indian Premier League boss Lalit Modi. As a witness in the current trial, Vincent alleged he was offered cash and sex to fix games when playing for the Chandigarh Lions, captained by Cairns, in the rebel Indian Cricket League in 2008. - NZME

NZ terror threat level still ‘low’ A former intelligence and defence policy analyst based in Auckland says we should not “draw too tight a parallel” between New Zealand and France when it comes to domestic terror threats. The Government yesterday decided to keep New Zealand’s domestic terrorism threat level at ‘low’ after the devastating Paris attacks. Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Finlayson confirmed that the terror threat level would remain the same, but was under continuous review.

This means there are no changes to any security measures in New Zealand, and the number of people on a terror watch-list remains at between 30 and 40. Following the terror attacks in the French capital on Saturday morning (NZ time), strategic analyst Dr Paul Buchanan said that while he would not be surprised if the New Zealand government upped the threat status, he was not entirely sure it would be justified. He had no doubts the Government would review the threat level with intelligence agencies,

but said we had to differentiate the situation that France is in from our own. Dr Buchanan – director of geopolitical risk consultancy firm, 36th Parallel Assessments, and a former consultant to US government security agencies, said France had bad race relations between minority communities and the majority. “And our situation is very, very different,” he said. “It’s simply not the same context, even though the Government is monitoring, according to them, 30-40 individuals who

have at least sympathies for the Islamic State. “So would it be surprising if they decided to elevate the terrorist threat level from low to medium, or whatever the next step up is? No. But I’m not entirely sure that we should draw too tight a parallel between our situation here and that of the French.” Meanwhile, in a week where New Zealand is set to host a number of high-profile concerts, New Zealand Police have reiterated that they are monitoring the security situation here. - NZME

Planning under way for White Ribbon quiz night By Caitlin Porter

Planning is well under way for this years’ White Ribbon Day, a time when people all over the country take a stand against violence towards women. Families Without Violence co-ordinator Anna Arrowsmith along with a 20-strong committee are busy organising to ensure everything will run smoothly on Wednesday November 25. As has happened in previous years a gentle march will take place at 12pm leaving from the clock tower and heading down East Street. Mrs Arrowsmith encourages all Mid Cantabrians to get involved and hopes for hundreds of people to turn out. Everybody in attendance will also have the opportunity to sign a pledge against domestic violence at the White Ribbon stand on the East Street chessboard. A quiz night will also be held at the Hotel Ashburton, with the White Ribbon Riders opening the event. The riders will roar into town as they make their way around the country on their tour to end men’s violence towards women. The ride first began in 2009 and has since grown into an annual event. Only 40 teams can enter this

Auckland mayor Len Brown is still planning to travel to Paris in the next few weeks for an international climate forum, despite the terror attacks. A spokeswoman for Mr Brown said yesterday: “The mayor intends to go to Paris, but obviously will be taking advice from Foreign Affairs.” Up to 190 countries will be represented at the Paris Climate Conference, dubbed COP21 (Conference of Parties), which will start late November and run through to December 11. Chimp surgery A 33-year-old chimpanzee at Wellington Zoo has undergone major ear surgery after rejecting a custom-made plug to prevent her from inserting sticks and pieces of straw into her ear. Plagued by persistent infections, Cara had her right ear canal removed by ear, nose and throat surgeon, Dr Rebecca Garland at The Nest Te Kohanga, the zoo’s animal hospital. “Surgery went smoothly, and we were able to patch up Cara’s ear,” said Dr Garland. Cara, who has lived at the Zoo since 1992, for years suffered from a chronic infection in her left ear that couldn’t be resolved by oral antibiotics. - NZME

Pike29 Memorial Track a ‘stunning addition’ A new 45-kilometre Great Walk will be created near the Pike River coal mine as a memorial to the 29 miners who died at the site five years ago. The Paparoa National Park between Greymouth and Westport will also be expanded by nearly 4000 hectares to include the old coal mine, Environment Minister Nick Smith said yesterday. Marking the anniversary of the disaster, Dr Smith said the

memorial came about because of the Pike River families’ “determination that some good might come out of the terrible tragedy”. He said the Great Walk would bring new tourism and economic development opportunities to the West Coast of the South Island and ensure the final resting place of the miners remained accessible but was still properly respected. large methane explosions in the underground mine in November 2010, and their bodies have not been recovered. The Great Walk – the tenth to be created in New Zealand - will run from Blackball to Punakaiki, and would include an eightkilometre side-track to the Pike River mine. “The Pike29 Memorial Track will be a stunning addition to New Zealand’s network of Great Walks,” Dr Smith said in a state-

A 6-month-old boy and a 4-yearold boy who were injured in a fatal car crash near Tuakau are in a stable condition at Starship Hospital. A front-seat passenger has died, with five others injured, after the crash on a Buckland Rd - a 100 km/h country road - north of Tuakau. One person has died, two others were initially reported as critical, two are serious and two had minor injuries. A person near the scene of the crash said it was believed the two critical patients were children, and had been transported to Starship Hospital by the Westpac Rescue - NZME Helicopter.

Opotiki stabbing A man suffered stab wounds at an address in Opotiki on Saturday night. Police said the man was taken to Whakatane Hospital around 1.45am after being stabbed. A woman from the same address in Wellington St has been taken to Whakatane Police Station and is helping police with their enquiries. - NZME

Driver loses control A driver lost control of his car yesterday morning, ploughing into a group of five people and seriously injuring two of them. Two people in the car were also injured. Police said the incident happened about 3.20am in Dominion Rd, Papakura. “All the injured were taken to hospital by ambulance,” police said in a statement. Those injured were all men in their 20s and 30s. The police serious crash unit attended the scene and conducted a scene examination. - NZME

The Ashburton Cadet Unit (ACU) is in the running for the national efficiency title. ACU was inspected by a warrant officer from the New Zealand Army on Thursday to see if its is the best run unit in the country. The top group from each division – Northern, Central and Southern – are having a visit from Regimental Sergeant-Major, Warrant Officer Class One Michael Yorwarth to decide the winner. Area support officer Major Cezarne Rodgers said the unit had won the title three times in the past and was hoping to come out on top again. Although it had not won since about 2012, it has been top in Southern and in the running for the national title for the last couple of years, she said. Sergeant-Major Yorwarth would look at the whole organisation of the unit including the functionality, the level of the cadets and the different activities on offer, Major Rodgers said. ACU will not find out its placement until after December 12 when the last unit is assessed.

Terrorism, an enemy with no face and no rules Sue Newman

he people of France were the victims, but the rest of the civilised world is reeling from the attacks in Paris that have left more than 129 dead and many more injured. What appears to have been random attacks on civilians has seen France close its borders and declare a state of emergency. Support and sympathy have poured in from around the world and today the one question that is hanging in everyone’s mind, is why? A number of arrests have been made, more will follow but inevitably the network of terror that has spawned those attacks will not be broken. The rest of the world will simply watch and ask, where next. Increasingly one country after another is being hit by random acts of terror that seem to have no pattern, no rationale. People are dying at the hands of individuals who believe so strongly in their cause that they are prepared to give their own lives. It’s an almost impossible battle for the western world to fight. We’re battling an enemy with no face and with no borders. It’s a fight that plays out without rules by an informal army that is driven by a passion and a belief that defies belief. It’s a fight that relies on fear and a belief that, that fear will hammer the western world into submission. Fear is a massive motivator, and a massive deterrent. Fear can grind individuals and a country to a halt. As it should, New Zealand has issued travel advisories telling people to stay out of Paris, to change travel plans. With every one of the increasingly frequent terrorist attacks, the same message is delivered. Take Tunisia. The horrific beach-side shoots there have virtually strangled that’s country’s tourism industry. The terrorists have won. And so it will be in France. Paris will be viewed with caution by international travellers for some time. The terrorists will have won. For every travel plan we change, every trip we cancel we are allowing terrorists the satisfaction of knowing they are causing us to live in fear, they are sealing the residents of every country inside their own borders. We must continue living; without fear; we must not let them win.

rade is vital for creating more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders. This year the Government has made significant progress on several trade deals which will unlock a wide range of opportunities for our country. Just a few weeks after finalising the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), we have already moved on to the next big trade deal. The Prime Minister and European Union (EU) leaders have announced that negotiations will begin on an EU-NZ free trade agreement as soon as possible. The EU covers a staggering NZ$20 trillion worth of GDP and is home to many consumers with sophisticated tastes. Europeans like New Zealand’s quality exports and if we can get better access to those markets then we can sell more. This is just the first step and it could take some time, but it is significant progress towards a stronger trading relationship. A free trade agreement with the EU would build on our agreement with Korea which passed through Parliament around a month ago, and the recently concluded TPP negotiations. TPP is expected to be worth at least $2.7 billion a year to New Zealand by 2030. The agreement with Korea will save New Zealand exporters $65 million in the first year alone and largely eliminate the $229 million our exporters pay a year in duties. Together, TPP and the free trade deal with Korea are worth $14,000 to every Kiwifruit grower alone in New Zealand. That means New Zealand businesses have more money to invest in growth, including jobs. Tariff savings are just the start of the benefits trade agreements

Trade deals also allow New Zealand companies to stay afloat in markets overseas, and for their products to compete with others who already have free access. We just can’t afford to miss the boat on this. Improving access to international markets is a key component of the Government’s Business Growth Agenda. Creating new opportunities for our exports is crucial to growing jobs and incomes in New Zealand. After our trade deal with Korea, 11 other TPP countries, and

getting the ball rolling on a deal with the 28 countries of the EU, the National-led Government is keeping up the momentum on trade. NZ amongst most generous nations New Zealand has been shown to be the third most generous country in the world, up two places from 2014, according to a leading authority on global generosity. The Charities Aid Foundation World Giving Index is scored by averaging the percentage of people in each country who donated money, volunteered or helped a stranger in the previous month.

For this year’s report 145 countries were surveyed, representing around 96% of the world’s population. The two counties shown to be more generous than New Zealand were Myanmar and the United States. The Index has shown that in 2014 donating in New Zealand increased by 11 per cent, four per cent more people would “help a stranger” and one per cent more people were volunteering. Of New Zealand’s population aged over 15 years, 73% donated money while 45 per cent of those over 15 years volunteered their time. Well done New Zealand!

In brief Relatives in custody Police have taken into custody the father and brother of a French gunman linked to a string of deadly Paris attacks and are searching their homes, sources say. The body of the 29-yearold French national was found and identified at the Bataclan music hall where 89 people were shot dead yesterday when three gunmen wearing suicide vests opened fire on spectators in the bloodiest of a string of attacks in Paris blamed on Islamists. Investigators were also searching the homes of friends and relatives of the Frenchman, another source close to the inquiry said. The father’s house is located in the small town of Romilly-sur-Seine, about 130km east of Paris, while his brother’s is south of Paris in the Essonne region. - AFP

‘Three teams’ of attackers French police have identified three teams of gunmen wearing suicide vests who killed at least 129 people during an onslaught in Paris. A 29-year-old Frenchman was the first to be confirmed among the seven attackers, all of whom died in the assault, while two other men who registered as refugees in Greece have been linked to the atrocities. The Greek line of inquiry, and the discovery of at least one Syrian passport at the scene, has raised suspicions some of the attackers or accomplices might have entered Europe as part of an influx of people fleeing Syria’s civil war. “A Syrian passport in the name of a person born in Syria in September 1990 was found near a suicide bomber who blew him-

self up at the Stade de France (stadium),” prosecutor Francois Molins said. Earlier in the day, the Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the attacks that left a trail of destruction at a soldout concert hall, at restaurants and bars, and outside France’s national stadium. A total of 129 people were killed and 352 wounded, of whom 99 were said to be in critical condition. The toll does not include the seven attackers. President Francois Hollande called the co-ordinated assault an “act of war” as the Paris capital’s normally bustling streets fell eerily quiet. A national emergency and three days of mourning have been declared. Paris City Hall ordered all city facilities closed,

while the Eiffel Tower shut indefinitely. Amid the fear there was also defiance, as hundreds gathered spontaneously at blood donation centres and flocked to place candles and flowers at the sites where people had died only hours earlier. The remains of the 29-year-old French gunman were found near the Bataclan concert hall in eastern Paris, the bloodiest of the attacks. A total of 89 people were killed there by armed men who burst in shouting “Allahu akbar” (God is great) before gunning down concert-goers and executing hostages. The jihadists were heard raging at the French president and his decision in September to begin air strikes on Islamic State

in Syria. French authorities also asked their Greek counterparts for information on the passport found at the scene of the Stade de France attack. “We confirm that the (Syrian) passport holder came through the Greek island of Leros on October 3 where he was registered under EU rules,” said a statement issued by Greek minister for citizen protection, Nikos Toskas. Another foreigner sought in connection with the attacks was also found to have registered in Greece, police sources confirmed. Greece is the main entry point in Europe for hundreds of thousands of Syrians refugees and European security forces have long feared that IS militants could hide among them. - AFP

Bavaria’s state premier Horst Seehofer says there is “reason to believe” a man arrested last week with several weapons in southern Germany is linked to attackers who killed more than 128 people in Paris. “There is reason to believe that this is possibly linked” to the attacks, Seehofer said yesterday. Police had confirmed the arrest on November 5 during a routine cheque on a motorway, saying “many machine guns, revolvers and explosives” were found in the suspect’s vehicle. - AFP

Brussels homes raided Belgian police have raided a neighbourhood of the capital Brussels in connection with the deadly attacks in Paris, public television RTBF has reported. The network quoted an unidentified source as saying up to three raids were being carried out in the Molenbeek district in connection with the Paris attacks but police were not immediately available for comment. RTBF said one man was arrested. The French-language tabloid newspaper La Derniere Heure added that the raids were carried out to find evidence in the homes of three young people who it claimed took part in the attacks. In Paris, several witness reported that some of the attackers arrived in a vehicle with Belgian licence plates. - AFP

Queen ‘deeply shocked’ by Paris attacks By Joshua Melvin Mourners across the globe have reacted to the attacks in Paris with tears, shows of solidarity and condemnations of those who carried out the assaults that left at least 128 dead. Queen Elizabeth II said she and Prince Philip were “deeply shocked” and UK Prime Minister David Cameron offered Britain’s help. Among other politicians there were loud calls for the world to ratchet up the fight against terrorism. Bouquets, candles and messages of condolence were laid at French embassies worldwide. Buildings ranging from the

Sydney Opera House in Australia to One World Trade Centre in New York were lit up in the colours of the French flag. In Madrid and Barcelona, hundreds stood for a minute’s silence outside city hall. “We are reminded in this time of tragedy that the bonds of liberte, egalite, fraternite, are not just the values French people share, but we share,” said US President Barack Obama, citing France’s national motto. The co-ordinated killings reverberated around the world after the shootings by gunmen shouting “Allahu akbar”, explosions and a hostage-taking at a popular concert venue on Friday in the French capital.

Indian Premier Narendra Modi called the attacks “anguishing and dreadful” and Hassan Rouhani of Iran condemned the attacks as “crimes against humanity”. “We share the sadness and the pain of the French people,” said Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “The Paris tragedy requires of us all to unite in the fight against extremism.” Chinese President Xi Jinping said: “In these tragic times for the French people I want ... to condemn in the strongest ways this barbarous act.” The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a “blessed attack on ... Crusader France,” which included an as-

sault on the national sports stadium and the Bataclan concert hall. France is part of a US-led coalition conducting an air war against IS in Syria and Iraq, where IS declared a caliphate last year after seizing swathes of both countries. Syrian President Bashar alAssad said French policy had contributed to the “spread of terrorism” that culminated in the Paris attacks. “The terrorist attacks that targeted the French capital Paris cannot be separated from what happened in the Lebanese capital Beirut lately and from what has been happening in Syria for the past five years and in other areas,” he said. - AFP

Eiffel Tower closed The Eiffel Tower will be closed indefinitely following the wave of deadly attacks in Paris, the iconic landmark’s operator says. The company decided to close the monument - normally visited by up to 20,000 people a day - after Friday’s attacks which claimed at least 128 lives, a spokeswoman said yesterday. 10 dead as train derails At least 10 people were killed and five more were missing after a French high-speed train derailed during a test run, the first fatal accident since the TGV trains were introduced more than 30 years ago. The victims were among the team of 49 technicians aboard the train which derailed yesterday near Strasbourg, northeastern France. There were no other passengers. The train was running at around 350km/h on a high-speed line as part of testing for the next generation of TGV due to go into service in early 2016, a source close to the inquiry said. Another 37 people were injured, including 12 people in critical condition, local officials said. Five others were said to be missing with some people “still trapped under the carriages”, according to French Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Segolene Royal. US strike ‘kills head of IS in Libya’

The head of the Islamic State group in Libya has been killed in an air strike, the Pentagon announced yesterday. Abu Nabil, also known as Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al Zubaydi, was an Iraqi national and an al Qaeda operative, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said. Cook described Abu Nabil as the senior IS leader in Libya and said he may also have been the spokesman in a February 2015 video showing the execution of Coptic Christians. “Nabil’s death will degrade ISIL’s ability to meet the group’s objectives in Libya, including recruiting new ISIL members, establishing bases in Libya, and planning external attacks on the United States,” Cook said. “While not the first US strike against terrorists in Libya, this is the first US strike against an ISIL leader in Libya and it demonstrates we will go after ISIL leaders wherever they operate,” he said. The Pentagon spokesman said the operation against Abu Nabil was “authorised and initiated prior to the terrorist attack in Paris” on Saturday. - AFP

Prince Charles is a known admirer of heritage architecture and was clearly impressed by the State Buildings in Perth when he took a tour of the 140-year-old structures. Previously known as the Old Treasury Buildings, the three interconnected heritage buildings have been restored to their heritage standard and include a vibrant retail, dining and hotel complex. Charles unveiled a plaque in the Postal Hall and met with architect Kerry Hill who explained the challenges of repurposing a heritage building. Prince Charles told guests, including state cabinet ministers and religious representatives, that he could imagine the effort and dedication required to restore the buildings. “For quite a large part of my life, I’ve tried to help find new uses for historic buildings,” he said. “So many of them convert brilliantly for other uses, so I’m thrilled to see this build-

The mother of at least eight babies, whose bodies were found in a house in southern Germany, has confessed to killing the infants, a police spokeswoman says. The woman said some of them had been born alive and that she killed them after the birth. Police found the decomposed remains of at least eight babies wrapped in towels and plastic bags in a house in Wallenfels, a small town halfway between Munich and Berlin. Police began questioning the woman, who now lives in the nearby town Kronach, at the weekend. According to media reports, she had moved to the town several weeks before after splitting up with her partner. - DPA

Royal tour of India The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will go on a tour of India next year, Kensington Palace has announced. The trip next spring will be the first time William and Kate have visited the country. It is unlikely they will take Prince George and Princess Charlotte. News of the royal tour comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on an official visit to Britain which has seen the unveiling of £9 billion ($NZ21 billion) of commercial deals between the two countries. He has been greeted warmly by Prime Minister David Cameron and has had lunch with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Modi is the first Indian premier to visit Britain in nearly a decade. - PA

Mass grave in Iraq A mass grave believed to hold the remains of dozens of Yazidi women executed by the Islamic State group has been found in northern Iraq, officials said. The grave, which has not yet been excavated, is located on the edge of the town of Sinjar, which was captured from IS this week in an operation led by Kurdish security forces and backed by US-led air strikes. The grave contains the bodies of some 78 women aged between 40 to around 80, according to younger women who had been enslaved by IS, witnessed the executions and later escaped, said Miyasir Hajji, a Sinjar council member. - AFP

Community service South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius has started performing community service as part of his parole conditions after being released from prison last month. Do you know the way to San Jose? The Silver Meteor was a good place to start for a marathon five-day train trip adventure.

he train conductor gave a surprised start as he checked our tickets. “What possessed you to do that?” he asked, staring at us. It wasn’t the first time my nineyear-old son and I had received double-takes on our coast-tocoast rail trip. But it was the most amusing, coming from an Amtrak employee no less, and a fitting conclusion as we approached our final destination in the San Francisco Bay area, after five days of train travel that began in Orlando, Florida. All told, we’d covered 6637 kilometres of railroad track. “Better you than me,” the conductor said as he headed down the aisle. Our eTicket told the basic story. We’d boarded Amtrak’s Silver Meteor in Orlando in time for a late lunch and chugged up to Washington, DC. We enjoyed several hours at a National Building Museum exhibit the next day, spending a long layover in a sea of plastic balls, then hopped on the Capitol Limited to Chicago.

Marcia Dunn spends five days on a train covering a mammoth 6600 kilometres just to satisfy her train-loving son’s appetite for rail travel. We strolled around the gloriously sunny but not so windy city a day later, then climbed onto the California Zephyr for the part of the journey my train-loving son anticipated most – back-to-back nights on the same train. I’d read about the Zephyr’s stunning ride through the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas. Frankly, I was drawn to the retro, low-pressure side of the journey as well - nearly a week with nowhere to be, except on a train. So armed with nothing more for entertainment than a few books, sketch pads and a chess set, we set off. Packed with vacationers, the Zephyr pulled out of Chicago, crossed the prairies to Denver, pushed past the Rockies and the alien-looking geologic formations of Utah and Nevada, then rambled through the Sierra Nevadas and past Donner Pass. The longest stop was in Denver – well under an hour – where workers hustled to wash the

double-decker train’s windows using squeegees atop long poles. This was especially important for the observation car with its picture windows. As we left Denver for the mountains, every seat in the observation car was filled. Reno, Nevada, also afforded a chance to stretch on the platform. Most other stops lasted only long enough to pick up and drop off passengers. We arrived in Emeryville, California, outside Oakland – end of the line for the Zephyr – on day five of our grand adventure. All that remained was the one-hour Capitol Corridor run from Emeryville to San Jose. It was early evening by the time we pulled into San Jose, 104 hours after we’d boarded our first train in Orlando. Now for the nitty-gritty: We had a two-person sleeping compartment the whole way, which made all the difference. The changing time zones, of which loudspeak-

ers kept us abreast, made for a little confusion. Yes, we used the communal on-board showers. It wasn’t nearly as icky or tricky as I’d imagined – the water was warm and the facility tidy. Granted, my son washed only once and wore the same red Minions T-shirt four of our five days on the tracks. But we weren’t too grungy as we arrived in San Jose. And we were hardly starving. Meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – are included when you book a sleeping compartment. They are served by waiters in the dining car. The food – especially the French toast – is actually quite good. Seating is communal and no booth seats go empty, but that’s the beauty of train travel. Imagine great meal conversation with travellers from around the world, eager to share not only a table but vacation and life stories. The not-so-good news: It was

the same menu, regardless of the route. So after five days of salmon, steak and cheeseburgers, I hungered for something else. This wasn’t a problem for my son, however, who ordered macaroni-and-cheese at every opportunity. As for hand luggage, we had a single small carry-on. Large suitcases could be stashed in a common area. Had I known that in advance, I wouldn’t have checked our big bag. As we celebrated our arrival in San Jose, I turned to my son. Would he do it again? You bet, he answered. So would I. Next time, we’ll take the even more popular Empire Builder from Chicago through Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana, winding up in Portland, Oregon, or Seattle. The Jennian Homes croquet tournament proved a resounding success at the Waireka club lawns on Friday, with Ashburton players performing exceptionally well in both forms of the game.

Sixty-four players from Aorangi, West End, Ashbury, Geraldine, Allenton, Hornby and Waireka took to the lawns with players’ ages ranging from 13 to over 80 years old. Waireka club’s Mary Bruce and Audrey Leath won the golf

croquet sections, while Aorangi’s Jeff Mill and Waireka’s Bernice Laird were the best of the association players. The tournament is also known as the Blind Tournament, due to $1 of each players’ entry fees being donated to the

Blind Foundation, and Waireka club captain Eva Kircher said that the day was enjoyed by all involved. “The day went fabulously. “We had 64 players there and it all ran smoothly and everyone was happy,” she said.

The combined popularity of Ireland and the All Blacks promises another big attendance at the home of the Chicago Bears NFL team. Starc serves up thunderbolt A New Zealand batsman may have been the recipient of the fastest ball bowled in test cricket at the Waca yesterday. When left arm quick Mitchell Starc was recorded bowling a delivery at 160.4kmph to Ross Taylor in the middle session of the second test, it was among the four fastest timed deliveries, but the other three were all in one-day internationals. It came the ball after Taylor was dropped by Mitchell Marsh in the gully off Starc, on 138. The other three bowlers clocked in excess of 160kmph are Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar (161.3kmph v England at Cape Town in 2003), and Australians Shaun Tait (161.1kmph v England at Lords in 2010) and Brett Lee (161.1kmph v New Zealand at Napier in 2005). There are no guarantees that these readings, and specifically Starc’s, are totally accurate. They are more an indication, run by broadcaster Channel 9. Starc’s top speed, and he did work up real pace in that spell, also included balls which broke McCullum’s bat and which had McCullum dropped at slip by Nathan Lyon. By tea, New Zealand were 406 for three, with Taylor, marching towards what would be his second test double century, comfortable on 165, and captain Brendon McCul-

lum, after a sketchy start, on 21. New Zealand trailed Australia by 153 runs. Taylor, who had given just one chance, did have the occasional worrying moment, but as his century approached and for a time after that, he was in complete command. The only wicket of the day had been Kane Williamson, out to a tired pull shot at a ball from seamer Josh Hazlewood to be caught at mid on for 166. Most importantly, from New Zealand’s perspective they had put their side in a solid position to save the test, which would give them a chance of squaring the series in Adelaide. The NSWRL have unveiled plans for a $20 million Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park which they say will deliver a huge State of Origin boost. The NSWRL will build a new headquarters, state-of-the-art gym and training field next to ANZ Stadium which they hope to have up and running by mid-2018. As well as housing the NSWRL head office and academies, the facility will also serve as the NSW Blues’ base during future State of Origin series. “We finally have a place that we can call home,” Blues coach Laurie Daley said yesterday. - AAP

The acting head of Russia’s athletics committee said he was prepared to resign as a doping scandal threatened to cost the nation its place at the 2016 Olympics. The International Association of Athletics Federations voted overwhelmingly on Friday to suspend the Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) for widespread and state-sponsored doping. “The Russian Olympic Committee is ready to take the initiative to reform the ARAF federation and bring it in line with the requirements of the IAAF and anti-doping legislation,” committee head Alexander Zhukov said. - AFP

Filly runs true to forecast A long-term prediction came true at Riccarton on Saturday when Risque came from well back in the field to claim the Gr.1 NZB 1000 Guineas. The victory capped a stunning week for trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards and jockey Matt Cameron who had combined seven days ago to triumph in the Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas. Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Colts XI won the toss and elected to field on a green surface against Ashburton College at the Domain on Saturday. The visitors’ decision to bowl initially looked a good one, as Josh Gill was removed for nought, but fellow opener Michael Burton continued his fine run of form. Burton and Sam Hall put on 64 runs before the latter was dismissed by Brelyn Little for 13.

Captain Kieran Hunt then made his mark by punishing some short bowling, smashing three 6s and four 4s. Burton (55) was eventually sent back to the pavilion from a fine one-handed catch at square leg by Louie Chapman off the bowling of Little for his third wicket, and Kieran Hunt (38) was next to go with seamer Jackson Pauling taking his first of an eventual sixwicket haul. Zach Naldrett was then caught behind for three by Mitchell Hay
