Where there’s hope there’s hospice Community support clinches deal

Seven years ago, Hospice Mid Canterbury was little more than an idea.

Now it’s a thriving organisation, offering services to individuals with life limiting illnesses from a building it now calls its own.

But without huge support from the community none of that could have happened, says trustee Jane Wright, who has been the driving force behind the hospice moving from vision to reality.

In the past seven months, that has also involved moving from rented premises to a property it owns. That growth, however, could not have happened without the generosity of the Mid Canterbury community, she said.

In August, Hospice Mid Canterbury struck a deal with Leigh and Murray Wackrow to buy their Sealy Street property, previously home to the Sealy Street Medical Centre. It came with a $500,000 price tag. While the service moved into its new home, a huge fundraising project had to be un-

Large grants were secured from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury, the Lion Foundation, The Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust and Advance Ashburton, but the community also opened its hearts and its wallets to play a significant role in the appeal, Wright said.

“It’s thanks to our amazing community that we succeeded in raising the full amount of $500,000 and that means we’re in the remarkable position of being able to move forward with no debt.”

The community fundraising started with a foundation group of 20 members, who each gave

$5000 or more as part of an ambitious target to raise $500,000 in seven months.

Hospice could now grow the range of services it offered to clients and their families, which currently numbered 67, and it had recently employed an activities co-ordinator.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with

the way the community has got behind us and this is now a community owned asset,’’ Wright said.

“It’s the start of the next step of our journey really as it gives us security going forward and helps minimise our costs. It’s blown me away the way people have come on board.”

Tourism promotion secured – for now

The cost to ratepayers of promoting the Ashburton District might have dropped by around $200,000, but tourism still contributes an estimated $95 million to the district’s economy.

Since 2013 the district has been promoted by an Ashburton District Council controlled organisation, Experience Mid

Canterbury (EMC), but this organisation was essentially wound up last year and marketing of the district moved into the hands of ChristchurchNZ Ltd, with the district’s tourism manager Bruce Moffatt now employed by that organisation.

Unlike many districts domestic tourists make up the bulk of the district’s visitors, about 70 per cent with most of those coming from Auckland.

Last week Ashburton’s district

councillors discussed the way they wanted the district marketed in the future and had four options on the table – no longer funding tourism, bringing tourism promotion under the council’s umbrella, continue with the CCO model used with Experience Mid Canterbury or contract promotion to ChristchurchNZ. Stakeholders, local tourism operators, were surveyed and strongly supported the ChristchurchNZ marketing mod-

el, but several said the amount of money dedicated to marketing the district was too low.

They said that the council needed to show tourism was important to it if tourism was to be enhanced in the district.

When councillor Liz McMillan asked whether the EMC brand had any future use, Moffat thought it could be used from a marketing perspective and said he had a series of meetings running next month with tourism

businesses and operators to talk about branding,.

A new identity or tag line might come from that, he said.

While the option of the council continuing to support tourism might not have found favour with all councillors, when Angus McKay and Leen Braam recommended tying the district in with ChristchurchNZ they found enough support to see negotiations on a three year contract get under way.

Kai time grows . . .

School lunch scheme pushing its boundaries

Making one or two school lunches is part of the morning routine in many families, but imagine if you had to do 500.

That’s exactly what Jo Taylor and her Kai for Kids team will be doing next term when Hampstead joins Netherby on the free and healthy lunch programme.

Ensuring children have a healthy meal midday is a passion for Taylor, who is working on her masters in clinical nutrition and understands the impact poor nutrition has on a child’s health and ability to learn.

The Kai for Kids pilot programme has been providing free lunches to the children at Netherby School since term two last year with the support of the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation.

When the government decided to up funding for its free and healthy lunch project, Taylor was determined Ashburton would be on the list. She made the case and funds have now been secured for both Netherby and Hampstead, and that will see 500 lunches made and delivered, five days a week each school term.

The programme is a universal scheme in that it offers lunch to every child on a participating school’s roll. And that has seen all but a handful of children at Netherby join the scheme, lining up each day to collect a lunch pack that’s filled with nutritious and tasty food items.

“It’s about everyone eating the same food, with no stigma,” she said.

The project has two work streams, one providing free lunches to every child at a participating school and the other providing a number of lunches each day for non-participating schools for children who may not have lunch food.

Extra food was also available to participating schools to distribute as staff saw appropriate.

Taylor and her team won’t be stopping at just two schools.

Kai for Kids will be making 500 lunches a day from May 3.

Their goal is to cover the district, with Ashburton Intermediate next on the list.

A key to the Mid Canterbury project is its strong focus on locally sourcing products, Taylor said.

“We have farmers donating their beasts to the Meat the Need charity and we’re the lucky recipients of that and we buy as much as we can locally too.”

The next phase of the Kai for Kids programme is to create an urban farm garden, in conjunction with Trott’s Community Garden, where the children and volunteers will grow some of the vegetables to go into the lunch meals.

This is a whole community project and now with the government funding it will cover most of our costs in terms of operations, but we’ll still have capital costs we’ll need to cover based in the Ashburton Event Centre kitchen, but before May, when numbers almost treble, they’ll need access to a new commercial kitchen, she said.

“While the cooking doesn’t

take up much space we need plenty of space for trestle tables where we pack the lunches.”

And that growth in lunch pack numbers means Taylor is on the search for additional volunteers.

That could include businesses offering to come in once a month and a possible “chop and chat” evenings where ingredients are prepared.

“This is a whole community project and now with the government funding it will cover most of our costs in terms of operations, but we’ll still have capital costs we’ll need to cover.”

And one of those big ticket capital items is a van. The scale of the service had now moved beyond the ability of Taylor’s car to cope.

Looking ahead, the need for community funding for the scheme itself is likely to return, she said, as a repeat of the government fund is unlikely.

In brief LTP submissions Submissions on the Ashburton District Council’s draft Long-term Plan closes on Monday at 5pm.

ECan LTP Environment Canterbury (ECan) has received around 1100 submissions on its draft Long-Term Plan but is expecting that figure to increase when all the postal submissions have been received.

ECan staff are currently collating the submissions, arranging responses and scheduling hearings - with the first hearing scheduled on April 27.

Drive-in flu jabs for seniors

Anna McLachlan from Ashburton was one of several hundred who drove into Three Rivers Health to receive her flu jab.

The medical centre alerted

patients that vaccinations were available from Wednesday and, by the afternoon, cars were lined up from the roadway.

It’s the second year Three Rivers Health has offered drive-in flu jabs and it would continue providing the service until the end of next week at least.

Business manager, Chris McCausland, said it had worked well.

“The patients appreciate the convenience of the drive-in, which allows us to vaccinate in a timely manner.

“We have about 2000 patients, who are 65 or over, and giving

them flu jabs in their cars is an easy way for them and us.”

McCausland hopes the majority of patients can be vaccinated by the end of next week.

The flu jab is particularly important for older people to keep them safe and well over autumn and winter, he said.

Rakaia dogs soon to have free play place

Dogs living in the Rakaia area could soon be acting as hosts to dogs on tour when a new canine exercise park opens in their village.

What started out as one woman’s dream has gained traction and is now a project in action, with a site secured and fundraising underway.

Debbie Renga knows first hand how important it is to have a safe exercise area for dogs after her pet was attacked during a walk

around Rakaia streets. She talked to others and found many people were looking for somewhere dogs could run free.

The idea grew, an approach to the Rakaia Residents’ Association saw a small committee formed and the project moved up a gear.

An approach to the Ashburton District Council saw a strip of land along the town’s ralway line tagged for the park and its location close to the Salmon Tales area makes it perfect for both locals and travellers, Renga said.

“Community support has already been massive and the great thing about this location is it won’t be just for locals it will be easy to access for people travelling who want to stop, use the toilets, have a coffee and exercise their dogs,” she said.

SKY TOWER CHALLENGE

Stepping it up in Ashburton

Volunteer Ashburton firefighter Amy Ferguson is bringing the Sky Tower Challenge to Mid Canterbury tomorrow.

Ferguson is competing in the Auckland Sky Tower Challenge for the first time next month, readying herself to climb the 1103 stairs of the city landscape donned in firefighter kit.

The Sky Tower Challenge is an annual charity event and its participants come from the country’s professional and volunteer brigades.

But Ferguson has also decided to bring the concept to Ashburton on Saturday to raise as much money as possible for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand Ferguson is a personal trainer at EA Networks gym and pitched the idea of using a stairmaster exercise machine to replicate the challenge.

“There was good support from the gym,” Ferguson said, who explained that anyone could register to compete from 8am-1pm and you did not need to don firefighter gear.

Making the morning a family friendly event, Ferguson has organised activities for kids.

There would be a pop-up fire truck playground and a $5 raffle where the prize would be a ride to school in a fire truck. And, of course, there would be a sausage sizzle.

Ferguson has also challenged the Methven’s Garage Gym to see who could complete the 1103 steps the fastest.

Ferguson and Anna Johnson, who owns Garage Gym, are good friends. Garage Gym also has a stairmaster, which led to the friendly competition.

And Johnson was pretty confident that Methven would take out the fastest time in the friendly competition.

“Absolutely we will win. No question,” Johnson said.

Energy payments to resume Age Concern Ashburton has welcomed Winter Energy Payments which start again from May 1.

President, Jan McClelland, says the payments, which the Minister of Seniors, Ayesha Verrall, has announced, take the pressure off seniors meeting the cost of heating over winter.

“Our elderly people look forward to the winter payments which lessen the worry that many of them have,” McClelland said.

“Mid Canterbury has cold winters and the payment is a recognition that the government wants people to stay warm.”

The Ministry for Seniors has announced that, if people receive New Zealand Super and Veterans’ Pensions, they are entitled to get the Winter Energy Payment from May 1 until October 1.

The payment is made automatically and seniors don’t need to apply.

Couples, and people with dependent children will receive $31.82 a week and single people with no dependent children will get $20.46 a week.

“The payment is made to help keep homes warm and dry over winter so people won’t need to worry when they turn the heater on,” the ministry said.

It advises seniors that, when the Winter Energy Payment starts part-way though the pay period, the first payment will be less than the full amount.

The full amount will be paid in the following payment.

Last year the Winter Energy Payment was temporarily doubled because of Covid-19, but this year it reverts to the standard rate.

hen the Guardian asked its readers to send in a photo of their teddies to remember the national lockdown bear hunt from a year ago – they delivered.

The photo of young Jasper Radford, 2, holding his toy lion Larry, caught our eye and was judged the best. The shot perfectly captured a boy and his teddy in a natural pose.

Jasper and Larry Radford were excited to hear they had won a $100 voucher from the generous team at Paper Plus Ashburton.

Jasper plans on using the voucher to buy another soft toy for his collection, but he may also get younger brother Oliver one, too.

Jasper’s mum Kassandra Marcon was just as excited to find out their photo won the competition.

“I am stoked to see Jasper win the prize,’’ she said.

“I didn’t believe when sending through the photo that it would win. It’s an amazing prize and we are all grateful.

Many bag crafty bargains

There was an initial flood of people hunting for a bargain at the Ashburton Altrusa’s annual Fabric and Craft Bazaar at the Sinclair Centre on Saturday.

Event co-ordinator Helen Hooper said “it went exception-

ally well” after a busy start to the day, with a large queue of fabric hunters waiting when the doors opened.

“We had 140 people come in within the first hour, and they kept coming reasonably steadily until lunchtime before things tapered off in the afternoon,” Hooper said.

The first hundred people were

in in the first five minutes.

“They just poured through the doors after queuing up at the door.”

Numbers were probably slightly down overall on previous years, Hooper said, despite there being a lot more on offer with over 200 boxes received in the lead-up to Saturday.

Over half of those went out the

door and the rest of the stock is now available at a pop-up shop on East Street – between Stepping Out and Flowers and Balloons.

The proceeds from the craft bazaar will go to local community groups, organisations and charities, Hooper said, but a decision on where the money goes will be decided once the pop-up shop closes on April 24.

Ashburton’s Hannah Cunneen is overwhelmed by the financial support she’s received for her crowd funding to help fund disobedience in Myanmar.

Cunneen and her partner, Rowan, recently returned from Myanmar and experienced conflict at first hand when protests were met with brutality by the military.

They had both lived in the country for several years and wanted to support those people who’ve given up their jobs to participate in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and to fund free ambulance and funeral services for CDM supporters.

The couple set up a Givealittle page while Hannah Cunneen still in isolation and, since being released earlier this month, they’ve focused their attention on raising further funds.

They set a modest target of $15,000 and donations have so far reached in excess of $12,000.

Cunneen is now confident the target will be met and she’s hoping she can double it to $30,000.

She wants to send the proceeds to private networks in Myanmar by the end of April.

“We’ve been blown away by donations from throughout the country, including Mid Canterbury and from members of the Myanmar community,” Cunneen said.

“Any amount, no matter how small, will make a huge difference to the CDM movement.”

Cunneen recommends that people should access a recent CNN report on Myanmar. Although the TV journalist, Clarissa Ward, was granted access to the country by the military, the CNN team was escorted and managed by the military throughout the days they spent there.

Cunneen was impressed by the bravery shown by protesters who approached Clarissa to tell their story but were detained immediately afterwards by government forces.

Of the 11 people interviewed, eight have been released.

The couple have their own contacts within Myanmar and they fear for the three locals who haven’t been discharged.

“Because of restraints imposed by the military, a chasm has opened up between international media and the local people,” she said.

“We are worried the protesters won’t be seen again.”

Time to show we care

T

hey say there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Well, they’re wrong – and thankfully so at Netherby and Hampstead schools.

Because at those schools from next term a free lunch will indeed be dished up to all the students, dispelling that popular adage that it’s impossible to get something for nothing.

The students, as Sue Newman explained in her excellent story on page 3, will all be benefactors of the healthy lunch programme led

by Jo Taylor and her wonderful Kai for Kids team of volunteers.

They’ll be making and delivering a quite staggering 500 lunches every day, five days a week. What started with free lunches at Netherby School since term two last year, and backed by the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation, has now grown to include Hampstead thanks to Government funding.

And it’s a cause close to Taylor’s heart. As someone working on her masters’ degree in clinical nutrition, she knows the dangers that a poor diet can have on a child’s ability to learn and just stay healthy.

The fact that kids are going hungry and are lacking in quality meals in Mid Canterbury is real cause for concern. But, in the same breath, the fact that the community has identified it and is trying to address it says so much about where we live and who we are. And it’s a serious, worrying issue. Because it’s well known that kids who lack nutritious food often struggle in class. They find it harder to concentrate on their work when they’re thinking about when and what they’ll eat next. Too often, they tune out, act up and drop out.

In a nation with more than enough food, ensuring that students have enough to eat should be a no-brainer. The Government is trying to address it but it’s no easy task. Their funding support is not unlimited and there are already concerns that central Government financial assistance for Taylor’s scheme may not continue beyond this year.

That’s when communities need to step in and make it happen. And that’s why Jo Taylor needs more help.

Kai for Kids need access to a new commercial kitchen to cater for the extra lunches they’ll produce.

More volunteers are required and a van, rather than Taylor’s own smaller car, would make the distribution of the food so much more effective and efficient.

Yes, that’s a lot to ask for but the health of our kids and our credibility and reputation as a caring community insists that we must act. Somehow. Some way.

YOUR VIEW Covid tracer Not being the owner of a Smartphone I am unable to sign in with it. And I am finding less and less businesses are having a sign in sheet out.

Cafes seem to be the worst of-

fenders. In the past two weeks I have been to three different cafes and each time have asked where the sheet to sign in was.

Today, the person behind the counter said to me just use your phone then when I said I didn’t

have a Smartphone she looked at me as if I was an alien being.

Then she said she would find a sheet and bring it to the table for my friend who also doesn’t have a Smartphone and I to sign.

We were almost finished our lunch when it ar-

rived and it was still sitting on the table when we left.

Is it now an assumption by Businesses in Ashburton that ALL customers should have Smartphones?

Things I learnt at Selwyn Sounds 1.

VIP beats the mosh pit every time.

Manda and I were a bit spoilt at Selwyn Sounds last Saturday. As a thank you for the promotion on my Facebook page, the NZME team in Christchurch sent me VIP tickets to the show.

Neither of us had been to Selwyn Sounds before, let alone as VIPs. We were lucky enough to bum a lift to the concert in a minivan and I said to Manda, we better not skite to the other passengers, who were seated in the General Admissions (GA) area with their deck chairs, about our VIP status.

One of them in particular gets a few mentions on my radio show, and would love any excuse to leave without me.

In fact, we made sure we went and watched most of Stan Walker’s set with them in the cheap seats.

The main reason being my first ‘VIP’ mention was just outside the Ashburton Racecourse. At least I held off till we got out of town, sort of.

The VIP area was right at the back of the venue in an open front marquee, out of the cold wind and boy was it laid on! Cheese platters on arrival, buffet lunch, dessert and free drinks all day. Boom!

I love live music and I would have been happy sitting on my deck chair, rugged up and tucking into a chilly bin of food in the GA area. Just not AS happy.

2. Hello Sailor have still got it, even without founding member Dave McArtney who died in 2013, and Graham Brazier who had a heart attack in 2015, when the band were planning their 40th anniversary tour.

The tour was postponed while he recovered, but he died shortly after.

3. The Chills remind me of Genesis. Not in the way they sound, but I know both bands are good at what they do and they, especially Genesis, have plenty of fans, but I just can’t get into them.

4. Annie Crummer can still sing the house down. Her presence on stage took the Ladykillers from the middle drawer to the top drawer and

the buzz in the crowd to new levels as well.

5. Automatic 80s are the best covers band I’ve ever seen. Yes, they were right in my wheelhouse era wise, but they were quality and had everyone rocking. They could easily have been the headline act and would have closed the show in style.

6. Zed are quality. They are a tight band, that play really good songs, really well. Frontman Nathan King is a quality muso.

7. Jordan Luck puts a smile on your dial, a nod on your head and an Ashburton Shuffle in your feet.

8. Although I didn’t know most of his songs and couldn’t understand the Te Reo ones, Stan Walker can sing! He is a quality performer.

9. Probably the most important thing I learned, (not that I have any trouble doing it) is to make sure you meet and chat with the people in your vicinity, even if you’re feeling a bit out of your depth.

We met some amazing people in our section of the marquee including a chap named Clive. He used to be ‘front of stage production’ for touring bands back in the day and told me a wonderful story about Ian Dury hitting him with his rhythm stick.

But that’s a story for another day.

Roll on Selwyn Sounds 2022, we’ll be there, wherever we’re sitting.

Labour refusing to lead a progressive drugs policy

nce again, Labour has chosen not to use (a) its parliamentary majority, and (b) the huge mandate it was given at the last election in order to (c) bring about progressive social change.

Once again, Labour seems to regard its main purpose for being in power as being to keep National and Act out of power.

Will Labour for instance, overhaul our out-dated, unsafe, and unjust laws on drugs?

No, it will not.

Instead, Labour is choosing to treat last year’s non-binding referendum on the very specific, controversial issue of cannabis legalisation – which ended up with a cliff-hanger 50.7 per cent “No” outcome – as being the final word on the subject for the foreseeable.

Reportedly, Justice Minister Andrew Little believes that the 50.7 per cent result rules out any action by the government on lesser steps – like say, cannabis de-criminalisation – until such time as another

referendum can be put before the public: [Justice Minister Andrew] Little said the government was now constrained by last year’s public vote on cannabis legalisation, which returned 50.7 per cent in opposition.

“I would interpret that as ‘no, we’re not quite ready for this level of liberalisation just yet’,” Little said.

about all that much: Little declined to put a time frame on when it might be appropriate to hold another vote, but noted that it was not his top priority.

Wow. So the rest of the developed world can enact sensible drug de-criminalisation and legalisation laws, and Little and the Labour government can go ahead

What on earth is the point of being elected to Parliament and having such an overwhelming mandate, if not to undertake the things that you believe in?

Little believed, given the referendum’s tight margin, the public would expect to have a vote on any further significant drug reform. (via RNZ) Oh and besides, this is not something that Little cares

and de-criminalise abortion without holding a referendum vote.

Yet on drug reform it is hiding behind the cannabis referendum outcome, and trying to portray its reluctance as being a

mark of virtue. It isn’t.

And some of its allies are willing to call Labour out for it: Green Party MP Chlöe Swarbrick, who has been trying to build cross-party consensus on de-criminalisation, said she was baffled by Little’s refusal to move on drug reform. She said both the mental health inquiry and the Safe and Effective Justice review recommended an overhaul of the Misuse of Drugs Act. “It seems like an absolute abdication of political responsibility,” she said. “What on earth is the point of being elected to Parliament and having such an overwhelming mandate, if not to undertake the things that you believe in?”

Good question.

More than ever, this government looks like the dog that chased the car and having caught it, now has no idea what to do with it.

Apart from the serious health and justice shortcomings of the drug policy that Little has chosen to perpetuate, his timidity isn’t even good politics.

By not seizing the political agenda and enacting progressive policies, Labour is looking dead in the water.

As a consequence, it is suffering the death of a thousand cuts over its competence in running managed isolation facilities and in rolling out vaccines on time.

Sure, those are important issues, but they are playing a prominent role in the current media cycle only because Labour appears unable/unwilling to lead from the front.

It has a vision deficit.

The Labour PM and her deputy are expert counter-punchers and are very capable micro-managers of the ambulances at the foot of the cliff.

But what’s called for right now is less caring, and more daring.

Goodhue ruled out for year All Blacks midfield back Jack Goodhue will be sidelined for the rest of this season.

Scans have confirmed Goodhue ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first-half of the Crusaders’ golden point Super Rugby Aotearoa win over the Hurricanes.

All Blacks prop Joe Moody may be able to return to rugby in the not too distant future, after he too limped off the field early in that match.

Moody has been diagnosed with a significant injury to the soft tissues at the base of his big toe, but at this stage he doesn’t require surgery.

He will be reassessed by a specialist in two weeks’ time, when a timeframe for his return will become clearer.

Meanwhile, former All Blacks flanker Jerome Kaino has been nominated for the European rugby player of the year award.

The 38-year-old has helped guide Toulouse to the semi-finals of Europe’s Champions Cup. Of the 15 nominees there are five from another French club La Rochelle, four from Toulouse and four from Leinster.

Set to toast his own millionaire

Ashburton horseman Terry McMillan is hoping he can toast to victories 2371km apart this weekend.

The respected trainer, educator and breeder will chuck Steel Dust on to the float this afternoon and trek his way to Addington for tonight’s meeting at the home of harness racing – but even if success falls his way, the thrill of it could be trumped by another win in Geelong, Australia tomorrow night.

Champion trotter Tornado Valley – whom McMillan bred, owned and trained before he was sold to the other side of the Tasman Sea – will be out to join an elite list of square gaiters in Australasia by becoming the ninth trotter to reach $1 million in earnings.

“It would be a big thrill for us to see that happen,” McMillan said.

“And it would be so deserving for the horse too, he’s been a champion since he got over there and reaching a mark like that would be the real icing on the cake for his career.”

Confidence levels high with Steel Dust Tornado Valley left New Zealand as the winner of seven races and more than $70,000 in stake earnings, but quickly stamped his mark on the Australian scene and has since won a further 31 races, including 10 Group One victories.

And McMillan has loved watching it all unfold.

“He was a very good horse here, but he’s just so suited to the Victorian style of racing – the short course stuff is right up his alley.

“He couldn’t have gone to a better trainer and driver, and to a better place to be honest.

“It hasn’t been easy though, and six months ago it looked like he wasn’t going to be making it back to the track, let alone winning races again, so it’s been so good to see.”

Tornado Valley has been trained by legendary Australian trainer Andy Gath throughout his career over there, with Gath’s wife Kate driving him in every one of his Australian starts.

Ashburton trainer Terry McMillan will line Steel Dust up at Addington tonight, but also be keeping an eye on his former horse Tornado Valley who shoots for $1 million in earnings tomorrow night in Australia.

And the confidence levels are high for a victory in in the Group Three Sundon’s Gift Free-For-All

tomorrow night too.

“He’s won three of his past four starts and I can truly say that his work at home is as good as it’s ever been,” Andy Gath told Harness Racing New Zealand this week.

There’s a further vested interest for McMillan in the success though, as he still has Tornado Valley’s dam, Begin, as a broodmare and Steel Dust – who races at Addington tonight – is his half-brother.

“He may very well end up heading to Australia too, he’s a very good mobile horse and I’m sure would do a very good job over there.

He’s been a champion since he got over there, and reaching a mark like that would be the real icing on the cake for his career “I think he’s a good chance this week, if he gets into the right kind of race for him, and I’ve been very happy with his work during the week.”

Steel Dust is one of half a dozen horses McMillan has in work currently, with a team that consists of five two-year-old pacers, four of whom have already qualified to race.

“I’ve got a bit of time for a Falcon Seelster called Ira Poole, beautifully gaited and a really nice attitude, it’s going to make a very nice three-year-old.”

Who knows?

Winning start on the turf

A strong start, and plenty of promise to come.

Mid Canterbury Hockey’s senior men side made a winning beginning to their foray in the Canterbury Hockey Association scene last weekend, announcing themselves as a side to watch this season in the Division One Championship.

The competition, which is the next level below premier hockey in Christchurch, was offered to local players by Mid Canterbury Hockey, but in order to be eligible for the squad, players must also be registered and playing hockey in Mid Canterbury’s Division One mid-week grade.

With a strong squad assembled, the side, which is under the watchful eye of Brent Gray, went to Christchurch on Saturday with plenty of nerves, but a standout first half performance eased any of those concerns as they put their rivals, Hornby, to the sword.

An early penalty corner put them in the match straight away – and while unsuccessful – it spurred the side into action, and Scott Marshall managed to push one past the goalkeeper to put the side one-nil up early on in the match.

That was followed by a goal for Brad Nordqvist, who was on the receiving end of a turnover

In brief Netball correction A story which appeared in the midweek Guardian incorrectly stated that Hampstead had only won two of their four games at the Inter Centre competition on the weekend. The side in fact won three of their four games, with the report stating they had lost to Mackenzie Old Girls, when in fact they convincingly beat them 48-22. The Guardian apologises for the error.

Course record Pegasus golfer, Oscar Cadenhead, left tongues wagging at the Methven Golf Course on Saturday when he broke the course record for the white tees. Cadenhead shot an impressive 64 to beat the record previously held by Robbie Bell, set 30 years ago, by one shot. His round consisted of 10 birdies, a double bogey, a double bogey and six pars for a seven-under par round.

The blue tees record at Methven is held by Jordon Pentecost with 65, and was equalled by Australian professional Peter Fowler in 2013.

The Mid Canterbury senior men’s hockey side after their victory against Hornby on the weekend. from Hayden Sinclair, and all of a sudden any remaining nerves were gone, with a good lead on the board.

A penalty corner conversion from Jeremy Moore late in the half put the scoreline out to three, and Mid Canterbury went into the break with a good buffer thanks to some excellent scramble defence.

their lead to four after the halftime break, through a wellworked goal to Stephen Blain, before Hornby got one of their own back to narrow the margin again.

Both sides traded blows for the final quarter of the match, but the Mid Canterbury side were able to hold on for the win and get good points on the board to kickstart their season.

Great results for young swimmers

Members of the Ashburton Swim Team were in grand form at last weekend’s Ashburton Splash swimming event, which was held at the EA Networks Centre over Saturday and Sunday.

A 24-strong contingent of local swimmers took part in the meet, with plenty of podium finishes, personal bests and qualifying times for the Division 2 championships in Dunedin next month.

Highlights included wins to Amwolf Artz in the 50 metre freestyle, Charlotte Doak in the 50 metre backstroke, Phoebe McKenzie in the 200 metre individual medley and the 200 metre backstroke and Lucy Reeve in the 200 metre butterfly.

Hannah King, who will head to Wellington this weekend as Ashburton’s only competitor at the National Age Group Championships, readied herself for a big week of swimming with victory in the 50 metre backstroke.

The Ashburton Splash saw the summer swimming season nearing a close with the Division 2 championships in Dunedin the only remaining major meet for the promising Ashburton Swim Team.

Alison says “It’s not a club event, just a group of keen motorists enjoying a trip together in some neat sports cars. We had a lovely catchup, and it was pretty good having those cars parked outside”.

And knowing the Shearers, the enthusiasts would have gone away having enjoyed great hospitality and a nice morning tea.

entley has this week launched a major new sustainability initiative, with the announcement of a renewable fuels research and development programme spearheaded by the most extreme road-car-based Bentley in its 101 year history.

The Continental GT3 Pikes Peak, designed and built to compete for the Time Attack 1 record at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, will be the first competition Bentley to run on renewable fuel, ahead of a goal to offer sustainable fuels to Bentley’s customers around the world. The modified Continental GT3 racer, based on Bentley’s championship-winning car, will power its way through the 12.42-mile course running on a biofuel-based gasoline.

To break the record, the car will have to complete the 5000ft climb, which includes 156 corners, at an average speed of more than 78 mph to cross

the finish line in less than nine minutes and 36 seconds.

To help achieve this ambitious target, Bentley has once again turned to three-time Pikes Peak champion and former King of the Mountain Rhys Millen (NZ) – who holds individual class records.

It was with Millen that Bentley captured its two existing Pikes Peak records – the Production SUV record attained in 2018 with a Bentayga W12, and the outright Production Car record scored in 2019 with a Continental GT. The engine is Bentley’s proven racing power unit, developed from the 4.0-litre turbo V8 fitted to the Continental GT V8.

For the Continental GT3 Pikes Peak, engine modifications together with the use of carefully selected biofuel will ensure the engine develops significant horsepower despite the rarefied conditions. Short side-exit exhausts will ensure the car sounds as dramatic as it looks.

What a great ride!

A massive loss for motorsport

A

round this time of year, in times gone by, we expected – and looked forward to – a call from Shayne Adams.

He would be in touch to talk about Wheels Week, and in particular the Street Sprints.

Shayne also keep us informed about other motorsport activities.

Sadly, Shayne passed away on March 25 this year, but in his typically organised fashion, as he bravely dealt with the issues he faced, Shayne made sure we were aware that after an absence last year due to Covid, plans are well under way for the 2021 Street Sprints.

It was inevitable Shayne and his brother Dean would become involved with motorsport.

From an early age they accompanied their father Russell and their uncle Wayne to car racing and other motor-related events.

By his own admission, Shayne was not destined to compete.

It has been suggested an incident at a gymkhana held in a muddy paddock convinced him of that.

Shayne was driving an Austin Allegro, which decided it would like to roll over; said vehicle landing upside down.

This incident left two impressions; one with Shayne, thankfully uninjured, who decided it was a clear message he should follow another path in motorsport.

The other impression was a defined outline of the car, also uninjured, in the soggy ground.

Shayne walked away from the mishap, but thankfully not from motorsport, and used his amazing and incredible organisational skills as a Clerk of the Course running countless events.

Because of his “can do” approach and his insistence of being “on time and systematic”, all the events Shayne planned ran like clockwork, and

ithout doubt for some readers Sunday April 18 is a special date.

I can say this categorically because it’s significant for my sister (in law) Julie along with Roger Hart and I. Ladies first – so let’s record, if you haven’t already guessed, why it’s a significant date for Julie.

It’s her birthday.

Should we mention a lady’s age?

Why not?

Julie will be 51.3 plus GST. Happy Birthday.

At this time twenty years ago, our local newspaper decided to introduce motoring pages, which have morphed into the present format.

The first in the series was printed on April 18, 2001.

Roger had been providing road tests for around five years prior to that.

I well recall a sense of nervousness preparing a column for the very first time.

Fast forward 20 years; Roger must have now provided close to 700 always interesting reports.

My motoring columns are approaching the 500 mark, which probably equates to around 30,000 words.

Over 20 years the cars Roger has driven have changed, as have the subjects for my columns.

But there have also been some constants – the support we’ve received from our motoring friends, editorial people and readers, all of which we are grateful for.

We’ve had a lot of fun on this journey, it’s a great ride!

The Prince and the MG

T

he passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, brings to mind a delightful story which occurred when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Ashburton in 1981.

Legendary local lady the late Bobbie Barwell was well known as the owner of a fabulous MG TC sports car which she had owned either from or close to new.

She and her car became legendary, and no doubt many stories could be told about them, but one in particular is fascinating.

Bobbie parked her MG on Seafield Road to witness the arrival of the royal entourage at Ashburton airport, and welcome them as they drove into town. Knowing the Duke had once owned a car like hers Bobbie held up a notice asking the Duke if he remembered that.

Seeing the sign, the Duke asked his chauffeur to stop, and he leaned out the window of his limousine and asked Bobbie if she thought the car was his old one.

Bobbie didn’t hesitate to inform the Duke that no, he had never owned her car!

That special moment in time was captured in a terrific photo taken from behind Bobbie looking towards the Duke in which he is leaning out the window and Bobbie, her companions and her MG are reflected in the sheen of the Duke’s limousine.

in no small way it’s because of his skills and his foresight that the Street Sprints have become an iconic part of Wheels Week, and put Ashburton at the forefront of motorsport.

The events which Shayne organised, especially the Street Sprints, have provided an opportunity for many people, encouraged by him, to compete in motorsport.

And over the years this has brought enjoyment to literally thousands of spectators.

Shayne has done so much for others, and been a great friend to many.

The Guardian Motoring Team feel very proud he counted us among his friends.

We are delighted to know this year’s event, taking place on May 8 and 9, will be known as the Shayne Adams Memorial Street Sprints, which is a wonderful way of honouring a good, clever and brave man who used his talents so well.

The Guardian Motoring Team will never forget Shayne; he’s had a special place in what we do, and we want Kim and all her family to know we will always remember Shayne as our great and respected friend.

A 65-hour bowling marathon last year has netted close to $23,000 for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand.

Popular and experienced local bowler Dan Hopkins undertook the challenge in December, in an effort to aid fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis and to raise awareness around the condition.

Hopkins’ daughter, Caitlin, was diagnosed with the conditions when she was 12 weeks old.

Playing bowls for 65 hours straight at the Hampstead Bowl-

ing Club, with huge support from members of the local bowling community and the wider public, Hopkins described the effort as a struggle in the immediate aftermath – but added that he drew inspiration from his daughter and another chance meeting.

“I was really struggling,” he said of the final stages of the marathon.

“Pain, leg cramps – it was a battle.

“I was thinking about my daughter, and I got to meet another person with CF who actually came down to the event.

“That spurred me on a lot,

knowing that I had met someone who was going to benefit from what I was doing.”

With money raised through a Givealittle Page, funds raised during the course of the 65 hours for challenges set up on the green and numerous auction items that were put up for grabs, Hopkins was able to give a final tally of $22,887 this week.

“We are absolutely blown away with the total amount which has been raised.

“So many people are going to benefit from this and I’m pretty pleased to be able to make a difference and help others out.”

Hopkins again gave thanks to his clubmates at the Hampstead Bowling Club, members of the Allenton Bowling Club and also everyone who donated to the cause, whether it was through financial donations or through items for the auctions.

“They all played a big part in this and we are forever grateful.”

Hopkins also gave special mention to his wife, Jessica, who was by his side throughout the challenge.

“She’s put up with my crazy ideas and stuck by me to help get me through the 65 hours by keeping me on track.

“I just couldn’t have done it without all her work behind the scenes.”

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 530 people in New Zealand.

Humans are born with CF and cannot catch it later in life, but one in 25 carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing.

It mainly affects the lungs and pancreas, but over time affects other organs too.

Hopkins hopes to make the official presentation to Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand in the coming weeks.
