A number of Mid Canterbury residents were caught up in a 5.7 magnitude earthquake which struck Christchurch yesterday.

The earthquake hit 15km east of Christchurch at a depth of 15km at 1.13pm, nearly five years to the day after the devastating 6.3 quake which killed 185 people on February 22, 2011.

Ashburton resident Kylie Burrowes was at the Christchurch Museum with her two children, aged 14 and nine, when it hit.

They had just finished looking at one

of the exhibitions when the building started to shake, she said.

Everyone tried to get under doorways and as soon as it stopped she took her children outside.

“It was really scary. It didn’t really seem real.”

A bit of plaster had come off in one of the rooms of the museum and everything in the gift shop had fallen off the shelves, Mrs Burrowes said.

Catherine Robinson, of Rakaia, had also spent the day in Christchurch with her husband and 13-month-old son for the Travel Expo and some shopping.

The family were in a shop looking at

ornaments for a Balinese-style garden they are making when it struck, she said.

Pots and ornaments were falling down all around them and her son started crying, she said.

They stayed in the shop because they did not know where else to go but all the staff ran outside. She found it eerie when she went outside because it was quiet apart from the sound of sirens.

“We just went straight home.”

Sister city relationships set to cost $20,000

When it came to a choice of keeping or canning relationships with its four sister cities, Ashburton district councillors ticked yes and that response came with a $20,000 price tag.

Ashburton has sister city ties with Pulaski in the United States, Ashburton in England, Puyang City in China and Shiozawa in Japan and council business support manager Paul Brake told councillors they needed to decide whether they wanted to enhance relationships with all or any of the cities or kill the project off.

In a report he outlined the history of the relationships, the opportunities that could come from fostering at least some of these and the potential costs involved.

Two ties, those with Pulaski and Ashburton in England, have been inactive for several years. Shiozawa delegates visit Ashburton regularly and there was a recent delegation from Ashburton to Puyang.

For the Chinese relationship in particular to progress the council needed to have money set aside to cover costs of entertaining delegates and providing gifts, Mr Brake said.

He recommended the council set aside $20,000 from its commercial property freehold account to establish the sister city fund and that $15,000 be put into

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay was adamant the sister city relationships, particularly with Japan and China, should be maintained.

Ashburton had already benefitted from the China link through a goat milk infant formula factory that was being built at the Ashburton Business Estate, he said.

Maintaining those relationships, however, did mean there were costs involved in reciprocating the hospitality that was extended to Ashburton delegations when they visited those cities, Mr McKay said.

Councillor Stuart Wilson urged caution.

“We want to be a bit careful here. If we get four or five sister cities the average ratepayer will be under pressure. It’s discretionary spending and we have to be careful,” he said.

Community relations manager Vincie Billante allayed his fears.

“We don’t exactly have a lot of cities banging on our doors,” she said.

“Our potential for great economic benefits for the district seems to be the Asian countries and we need to respond in kind to the hospitality shown to us when we go over there.”

The first call on that account may come with October’s celebration in Japan of the 30th anniversary of Ashburton’s sister city relationship with Shiozawa.

Families left waiting for help

Four Ashburton families are waiting to access funded autism support.

According to statistics released

by IHC, there are more than 40,000 people living with autism in New Zealand, and nearly 800 families going without government funded support.

People with autism are entitled to attend funded autism courses as well as workshops, all over the country.

However, IHC programmes general manager Janine Stewart said it could take up to a year to get on one of the funded courses, which was too long.

The Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) courses, facilitated by IHC’s IDEA Services branch, are

fully funded for families, caregivers and young people with autism.

They cover children up to six years of age, children from 11 to 16 years of age and a communication and behaviour service for people under 19.

People waiting to attend the courses can instead sign up for workshops which, while not a replacement for the courses, provided practical advice to people and their families.

However, no workshops or courses are set be held in Ashburton, so those waiting must travel to access help.

A spokeswoman for IHC said workshops were held in Timaru and Christchurch and while it was understood it was an hour’s drive, people in Mid Canterbury

do have access to all the courses and workshops on offer.

A “close eye” would be kept on the area for demand and the possibility of starting up workshops.

Of the four families waiting for funded support, the spokeswoman said IHC was working with them directly to ensure they received the support they needed. As well as courses and workshops, people were also eligible to access a large quantity of information on autism, courtesy of IHC’s intellectual disability library.

“We send information all over the country for free, anyone can join,” the spokeswoman said.

■ CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE

Chch on edge after quake Violent shaking, a cliff collapse, liquefaction, minor damage and injuries, but a major psychological blow for Canterbury after a 5.7 magnitude quake hit at 1.13pm yesterday.

The severe quake was centred 15km east of the city and was felt as far north as Wellington.

It was followed by another, moderate quake with a 3.5km magnitude at 1.17pm, 10km north-east of the city.

Aftershocks continued to hit the city last night, with a magnitude 4.0 quake at 6.27pm, 15km east of the city.

Shelves have fallen in homes, shops and libraries and Riccarton and Northlands Malls were evacuated. There is also minor liquefaction in some eastern suburbs, including New Brighton and Parklands, and water mains have burst in several suburbs.

The residents of Linkwater Way in Parklands were delighted that their pot-holed, crumbled, and broken road had finally been laid with new flat, smooth black asphalt on Friday.

The close-knit residents soon pitched in with shovels and spades to clear the worst of the liquefaction.

Linkwater Way resident Gary and Tina Bell’s swimming pool in their backyard collapsed during the shaking, sending thousands of litres of water into their home, which is awaiting demolition after extensive damage from the deadly February 22, 2011 quake, nearly five years ago.

“It’s a bit of a kick in the guts to tell you the truth, but that’s life - we’ll carry on and be right,” said Mr Bell.

St John said they had a sharp increase in calls during the quake but they were mostly related to minor injuries from falls as they were running.

Jacob Savage, 17, was in the Countdown supermarket in Eastgate Mall in Linwood when the walls started shaking and items fell from the shelves. A little girl ran over to him and together they curled up into balls

until the quake stopped. An aisle over, the roof collapsed.

After the shaking stopped, Jacob said people were screaming and crying. A woman in her 60s had a heart attack.

“I’ve done a first aid certificate and so I knew what to do. I ran to get a staff member and called 111 and I put her in the recovery position, then I stayed with her until the ambulance came.”

Earthquake Commission chief executive Ian Simpson said people who have suffered damage to their home, land or contents have three months to lodge their claim after taking care of themselves, their families and friends.

“It can take some time for the picture regarding claims to emerge as people come to terms with what’s happened and had a chance to take stock of what’s happened to their properties,” Mr Simpson says.

Meanwhile, Canterbury District Health Board CE David Meates is encouraging people to check on their family and neighbours, particularly the elderly.

There were no reports of serious injuries but there was damage to cliffs in the Port Hills, burst water mains, flooding, downed power lines and some liquefaction in east Christchurch.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said it would be cold comfort for people who had been through more than 13,000 aftershocks but an earthquake this size was part of the predicted “decay curve” from the 2010 and 2011 shakes.

Gibbons, who was part of the LINZ rapid response team, said there had been a cliff collapse at the far side of Sumner at Godley Head.

There was also a cliff collapse at Wakefield Avenue of a couple of hundred cubic metres.

The earthquake was rated by Geonet as severe and was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

St John attended incidents of people falling as a result of the quake and police spent time restoring traffic lights at major intersections in the city.

Power was lost to 450 customers between Burwood and Spencerville and at 100 homes in Akaroa.

The science The latest big quake comes after more than 15,000 others, most of them too weak to be felt, in an aftershock sequence triggered by the 7.1 Darfield earthquake on September 4, 2010.

That earthquake, which triggered the sequence that included the February 22, 2011, quake that killed 185 people, was caused by strike-slip faulting, where two blocks within the crust of the Pacific Plate violently tore past each other, near the eastern foothills of the Southern Alps, at the western edge of the Canterbury Plains.

It set in motion activity in a web of faults beneath Canterbury - most of which are still probably unknown to scientists - that has carried on with nearly 1000 recorded quakes in the past 12 months.

“You can trace it all back to that original Darfield quake,” Geonet seismologist Dr John Ristau said.

“Although it’s been a while since then, the probability of having another aftershock of this magnitude had still been terribly high.”

Yesterday’s quake was another case of “strike-slip” - a side-by-side motion rather than an up-and-down one - that typified Canterbury’s recent big earthquakes.

Interestingly, though, its motion was unlike the reverse-faulting of most of the large aftershocks recorded in the same area in December 2011.

Dr Ristau said it was likely the quake happened on a previously unknown fault.

“Particularly because this quake was offshore in Pegasus Bay, the actual chances of us having mapped the specific fault in that area are much slimmer,” he said.

“I guess the one fortunate thing you can take away from this is that because it happened a few kilometres offshore, no one was going to be sitting right on top of it, which is going to help minimise the damage.”

By contrast, the 6.3 2011 Christchurch earthquake struck just 10km east of the city centre and 5km below ground - and with the force of 15,000 tonnes of TNT. The highest recorded peak ground acceleration - measuring the intensity of the shaking - of yesterday’s quake was 0.4g, while the February 2011 quake hit 2.2g at its most violent point.

It is a long journey from Washington State to Ashburton, but it was a trip one of Ashburton’s newest residents was more than happy to make.

Dr Dale Abbott is calling Ashburton home for the next 12 months, after taking up a position at the Moore Street Medical Centre.

Dr Abbott received his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine but spent time in New Zealand as a medical student back in the early 1980s.

Based in Te Awamutu, he worked for two weeks before the doctor he was working with suggested he get out and about and experience the country. So he hit the road, hitch-hiking around the North Island.

“I always wanted to come back, it’s just taken a while,” he said.

In private practice for 26 years, Dr Abbott said it was time for a change and with his children grown up and his elderly mother in good health, he decided to hit the road again.

“I checked with a locum tenens company based in Salt Lake City and they had a number of clinics in the South Pacific, a couple in New Zealand and in

Fire callouts Mid Canterbury firefighters were called to two suspected vegetation fires over the weekend. They both turned out to be controlled burn-offs reported by passersby seeing smoke. The first was attended by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade on Hakatere River Track at 1.23pm on Saturday.

The second was attended by the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade on the corner of Chertsey Kyle Road and Taverners Road at 12.36pm yesterday.

He is described as a European in his late 50s with grey “salt and pepper” hair and with facial stubble. The man is around 175cm tall (5ft 9in) and of a slim build. He has a scruffy and unkempt look, and may have some teeth missing.

The team at Moore Street Medical Centre had also been great, helping Dr Abbott to settle in, setting him up with a car and a place to live.

While Mid Canterbury was not a far cry from his home town,

other things were far from the norm. The names of medicines, systems and procedures were all different and the clientele more diverse, he said.

In the short time he has been working, Dr Abbott said he had already seen patients from more than 15 different countries.

The plan is also to see as much of New Zealand, and eventually Australia, as he can.

Beach owner pleased The owner of the beach in Abel Tasman National Park which has been the focus of a crowd funding campaign is pleased with all the local interest. More than two million dollars has been pledged to help buy the beach on the Awaroa Inlet. Lawyers for owners Michael Spackman say the family is positive about the sale process and where it’s heading.

Gallipoli still on

Time for volunteers to be in the spotlight It’s time for volunteers to shine, with nominations for the 2016 Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards now open.

Anyone in the district can nominate volunteers to be considered for the awards, which are run annually by Trustpower in partnership with the Ashburton District Council.

The Ashburton Combined Rural Fire Force Units was the supreme winner last year and will represent the district at national awards in Dunedin next month.

Bryan Pitt urged people to get behind the programme, whether they’ve been operating for 20 years, or 20 days.

“We’re really excited. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support that’s come in, there’s no lack of that,” Mr Pitt said.

Mr Pitt and his fellow volunteer and representative at next month’s national event, Greg Bruce, have been working on the presentation for weeks, and are making the most of the Trustpower Ashburton Community Awards legacy by connecting up

with the 2014 supreme winner, Mania-o-Roto Scout Zone.

Trustpower community relations representative Arielle Monk will be in the area over the next month visiting Ashburton communities and neighbourhoods, to hunt out potential future winners.

“I’ll be in town and about the district to find some of those groups and people myself; we all know how humble and unassuming volunteers can be,” she said.

Since 2001, the Ashburton District Council and Trustpower and

have worked together to donate more than $66,000 to volunteer groups and this year more than $5,000 in cash prizes is up for grabs again.

“These awards are just one small way we can say to those volunteers ‘cheers for that’, and make these local heroes feel a bit special,” she said.

The awards cover five categories and entries close at 5pm on April 8. Entry forms are available at the council offices or service centres, online at www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards.

There’s been an assurance from the Government that Anzac commemorations at Gallipoli are going ahead as planned. Australia’s government has cancelled the Lone Pine service, saying the site is is too hard for veterans and their families to get to. GPs send stop smoking support via text

A local smoking cessation service is supporting the initiative that sees smokers receive encouraging quit smoking texts from their doctors.

As part of the Ministry of Health’s goal to support smokers who want to quit, doctors will

send text messages to enrolled patients and request a response as a means to record their smoking status and encourage them to give up.

Smokefree Mid Canterbury coordinator Carly McDowell said anything that encouraged smokers to quit was a positive thing and would bring the country clos-

er to being smokefree by 2025.

The Ministry of Health’s Smokefree 2025 goal is intended to protect children from exposure to tobacco marketing and promotion, reduce the supply and demand for tobacco and provide support for quitting.

Achieving that goal would mean that our children and grandchil-

dren will be free from exposure to tobacco and tobacco use, Mrs McDowell said.

“The smoking prevalence across all populations will be less than 5 per cent and tobacco will be difficult to sell and supply [so] any steps that encourage and support quit smoking are a positive thing.”

According to the Ministry of Health, smoking kills more people in New Zealand annually than road crashes, alcohol, other drugs, murder, drowning and earthquakes put together.

Non-smokers are also at risk, with an estimated 350 deaths a year due to exposure to second hand smoke.

Council looks at new Methven water source

Giving petanque a whirl

Methven has been given the green light for a project that could see the town provided with a new source for its household water supplies.

The Methven Community board has been pushing the council to investigate an alternative water source after the existing infiltration gallery was found to be fragile and in poor condition.

At Thursday’s council service delivery committee meeting, district councillors discussed the board’s request and decided an investigation should be undertaken across a range of alternative sites.

Mayor Angus McKay said there were already issues with falling

pressure in parts of the town and that a new supply would be needed within 10 years.

“Ashburton and Tinwald have a number of sources and if one goes down then we have options. There will be a cost, but we have to do something now for the future and these things inevitably take time,” he said.

Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said investigation work could be carried out under current budgets.

Work on the current gallery is funded through a special rate on the Methven community and work on a new supply source was also likely to come from a targeted rate, Mr Guthrie said.

A Coastguard skipper has described the moment he discovered a fisherman who had clung to a floating petrol container for seven hours overnight after his boat capsized.

Two men were fishing off the coast of Waihi Beach late Saturday night when their boat upturned.

One man swam to shore to call for help while the other held on for life to a yellow 20-litre petrol container, waiting seven hours in darkness before he was rescued.

They were saved by Coastguard vessel Gallagher Rescue, skippered by Tom Watts.

Mr Watts said they tipped over

on a bar about 11pm Saturday night.

“You don’t cross a bar at night.

What they did was dumb, really dumb. The conditions were not ideal for what they were doing, and their skill level was not up to scratch.”

Mr Watts said once the fisherman was in the water he was determined to hang on to his means of survival.

“He did the sensible thing, he took the cord from out of his trousers and tied it to the tank and then to his wrist, he wasn’t going to let that thing go.”

Gearing up for mobile home show By erin tasker

Mobile homes big and small will come to Ashburton on the hunt for new owners next weekend.

The South Island Mobile Home Extravaganza will be at the Ashburton Showgrounds for two days – February 20 and 21 – and organiser Murray Meadows is expecting more than 300 mobile homes from all around the country.

There will be about 100 mobile homes from the private sector, and about 200 vans and campers from dealers, and everything from small Hi-Ace mobile homes through to 12-metre, two-storey

jobs, Mr Meadows said.

It’s an event that has been running for more than a decade now.

“We only had 46 vans that first year, and now we’ll have more than 300,” Mr Meadows said.

That first event was prompted

by Mr Meadows’ own experience, in finding that mobile homes weren’t always what they appeared to be.

“It came about because I got sick of going to Christchurch and seeing vans that were falsely advertised.”

Mobile homes that were advertised as having a little rust, had a lot, and those which blew a little

smoke, blew a great deal of smoke.

“I was in bed one night and thought why don’t the motorhomes come to me,” Mr Meadows said.

His show grew to become a onestop shop for anyone in the market for a mobile home, and people come from near and far to both buy and sell.

“For years we’ve definitely had buyers from Whangarei, and they usually have a one-way flight, so they are determined.”

Mr Meadows said every year he reckoned the event would be the last one he’d put on, but he keeps coming back for more.

“There is a need for it, and I’d hate to see it die if I quit.”

The South Island Mobile Home Extravaganza will run from 9am until 4pm next weekend – February 20 and 21.

Children to give coding another crack

Ashburton’s new computer programming course for children is all set to go ahead this year.

The Mid Canterbury Code Club, which has been organised by Business Mid Canterbury, Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association (MCPA) and Code Club Aotearoa, started in Term 4 last year to teach children a new skill.

Business Mid Canterbury business development manager René Artz said the course will be running with about 30 existing pupils from last year.

More than half the class are in Year 5, about 10 years old, and find the programme both challenging and interesting, he said.

The two industry programmers who teach the class, Matt Harris, of EA Networks and Zach Matyi, of Carrfields, have been instrumental in operating

the course, he said.

“We could not run it without the huge effort of these two.”

They would like to expand the course to other areas of the district because of demand but they need more people to help facilitate the classes and/ or coding specialists.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy said he was looking forward to the course starting up again.

“It’s great they are going ahead with it this year” he said.

Last year volunteers taught students aged between eight and 12 years to carry out computer coding projects including games, animations and websites.

The first session will start next Tuesday, and will run weekly, at Ashburton College from 4-5pm.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in homework through curriculum extension exercises.

Firefighters battle it out

Firefighters from around the South Island gathered in Methven for a gruelling hoserunning and pump operating competition on Saturday.

Eight two-person teams and seven fourperson teams from as far away as Bluff and Richmond competed in the South Island United Fire Brigades’ Association’s Waterways Challenge at the Methven Domain.

UFBA Challenges Committee chairman Nigel Lilley said it was an outstanding event.

It is always good to see the camaraderie of the teams and see how they have honed up their skills, he said.

“It’s a great challenge for them.”

Some teams train a whole year to do well in the event, he said.

The competition is held in a different place each year and it was good to hold it in a small town like Methven which gives so much to their local brigade, Mr Lilley said.

Following the event all the participants had a meal at the Methven Fire Station and were able to catch up.

“Networking is a huge part of it,” Mr Lilley said.

The only local participant, a two-man Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade team, came seventh.

Mossburn came first in the two-person team challenge and Greymouth won the four-person team challenge.

Classrooms spruced up for 2016

Mayfield School is looking spick and span after renovations during the summer holidays.

The school’s Room 4 and 5 classes were painted and had new windows, wall coverings and underfloor insulation put in.

Principal Richard Kidd said the two rooms also had large storage cabinets installed.

“The teachers really appreciate the storage.”

The work, which was completed before school started for 2016, was funded through a Ministry of Education property maintenance grant.

The school was also supposed to have its tennis court resurfaced before the beginning of the term through ministry funding and local grants, but this was delayed due to wet weather in the last week before school started.

The work was able to be done last Tuesday but the markings are yet to be painted.

Mr Kidd said it would be great for the school to have a new court because the old one had a number of bumps and cracks and more sport will be able to be played on it.

Mayfield School’s Room 4 and 5 classrooms were renovated during the holidays.

Key booed

by TPP protesters John Key was booed off stage at yesterday’s Big Gay Out festival by a group of vocal anti-TPP protesters.

Donned in a pink polo shirt, Mr Key took to the stage alongside National MPs Nikki Kaye and Maggie Barry. But a group of about 30 protesters clutching banners and shouting anti-TPP slogans drowned out his short speech, and the prime minister then left the stage to loud booing.

Speaking to media afterwards, Mr Key said he had expected the reaction but stressed it was from a small group of individuals who did not support the National government.

He also made reference to the Christchurch quake, saying the people of Christchurch were resilient.

He was pleased no one had been seriously injured in but said it was unfortunate it came so close to the five-year anniversary of the deadly February 2011 earthquake.

Pink glitter was also thrown at Mr Key and his contingent.

When will the shaking end?

C

hristchurch used to be a city of history, culture and beauty.

And while it still has these elements, the earthquakes have transformed it. Not only its landscape, but also the people who reside within its boundaries.

Yesterday’s magnitude 5.7 earthquake shows just how fragile the city and its inhabitants still are.

Coming so close to the fiveyear anniversary of the 6.3 quake which killed 185, injured thousands and left a gaping hole in the city on February 22, 2011, makes it feel like there is no end in sight.

Residents of the quake-torn city have had to endure more than 15,000 shakes since the first big one on September 4, 2010.

They have started to repair their lives, rebuild the city and try to move on, but how can they when days like yesterday happen?

Don’t get me wrong, the city has done very well in rebuilding and reinvigorating itself with new buildings, memorials and art displays.

But when a shake like yesterday happens it just brings back all the memories, devastation and fear.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee announced yesterday that the impact on our close neighbours, the people of Christchurch, was more likely to be psychological rather than physical.

Strengthening work done since the two big quakes in 2010 and 2011 meant people could be more confident in the way the city responded to the latest shake in terms of its buildings and infrastructure.

“The uncertain bit is just what this does to individuals and how this shakes things up,” he said.

He is quite right, how much more can they take?

Even us in Ashburton, who were affected by the earthquakes – not quite as badly but still enough for it to have negatively impacted on our lives – feel the same fear when a shake like this rolls through our pastures.

Having Christchurch on our doorstep as a place to visit in the weekend, go shopping or attend appointments is a wonderful benefit to us.

But being so close to the broken city means we have a responsibility to think about what we can do to help its poor residents, don’t we?

Rubbish So the council is going to increase rates by 11 per cent to pay for rubbish collection. As a pensioner who currently spends around $50 annually on rubbish bags, this means I will be charged $220+ for the same service.

I have much sympathy for those in town whose rates are $3000 plus as they will be paying $330+ for the same service.

Regarding green waste, the answer is simple. Retain the current system but instead of black bags with the council’s name on they should use clear bags with the council’s name so rubbish collectors can see the contents and refuse to uplift bags with green waste.

There are numerous collectors of green waste in town and people who require this service should contact them for collection. Lets keep it user pays as many pensioners will find it difficult to pay for other people’s rubbish collection.

Wool programme to benefit our farmers A

new Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programme to make wool more profitable and sustainable will work to the advantage of farmers in our area.

A seven-year partnership between the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and The New Zealand Merino Company, Wool Unleashed (or W3) is expected to contribute $335 million to the country’s economy by 2025.

In past years, wool was one of the highest export earners we had, with the bulk of that being strong wool.

Since the 1990s wool earnings have been in decline. The W3 PGP programme is a real mechanism to help turn that around.

The programme will go about this by linking strong wool farmers with the right markets, developing new and niche products, and sharing best practice

The end goal is to make New Zealand strong wool and wool products relevant to end users around the world. I look forward to the plusses of W3 finding their way back to wool producers right here in Rangitata.

The PGP aims to boost the value, productivity and profitability of our primary sector through investment between government and industry.

Government and industry are co-investing $746 million over

time into 21 PGP programmes.

There have been two completed and another 19 are under way.

PGP programmes cover the breadth of the primary industries: wool, dairy, fishing and aquaculture, meat, pastoral, bee keeping, forestry, wine, viticulture, and horticulture.

Programmes include focusing on areas like: • education and skills development • research and development • product development • commercial development • technology transfer.

PGP programmes are generally long-run programmes of five to seven years’ duration and are subject to oversight and monitoring by an independent Investment Advisory Panel and MPI. Monitoring requirements include programme steering groups, quarterly progress

reporting, annual plans, financial audits, and progress reviews, along with evaluation of the overall programme.

Government funding is only released to programmes on receipt of invoices for work completed in accordance with programme plans.

A 2014 report by NZIER estimated that PGP programmes will add at least $6.4 billion per annum to New Zealand’s economy by 2025.

The PGP is delivering tangible benefits and the Government has confidence that our primary industries will be able to continue their good work towards primary sector innovation activities.

The PGP is all about the Government and primary industries investing in research and development together and, ultimately, about adding value for our famers, foresters and fishers.

Humvees used in attack Taliban insurgents in captured military Humvee vehicles have launched suicide attacks in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, killing several members of the security forces in the district centre of Sangin, a senior official says.

The incident came amid bitter fighting in Helmand, a traditional Taliban heartland where insurgents have overrun many areas, leaving government forces in some district centres including Sangin and Marjah barely clinging on.

Provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Sarjang said that after heavy fighting on Friday during which the Taliban lost around 40 fighters, suicide bombers in two captured Afghan army Humvees targeted the police and governor’s headquarters.

“The first Humvee was ordered by the police to stop but when he ignored warnings, the police fired a rocket-propelled grenade,” Sarjang said.

The second bomber detonated his vehicle near a checkpoint guarding the two headquarters. Four policemen were killed and seven wounded, he said, while an army spokesman said one soldier was killed and another was wounded.

In Kabul, the outgoing commander of international troops in Afghanistan General John Campbell confirmed the incident but said no American troops were involved.

The Taliban have captured large amounts of weapons and equipment from Afghan government forces, including Humvees and other vehicles, as the insur-

gency has spread over the past year.

Campbell recently ordered around 500 special forces personnel into Helmand to help bolster struggling Afghan security forces but their role is to act as trainers and advisers and only to get involved in combat if they come under attack.

Last month in Helmand, an American special forces soldier was killed during a firefight near the district centre of Marjah while he was on an operation with Afghan commandos.

US and British soldiers and marines suffered hundreds of casualties in Helmand where they fought for years against the Taliban for control of the province, one of the world’s biggest opium-producing areas.

Govt can’t confirm if Sharrouf is still alive Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says if Islamic State fighter Khaled Sharrouf is still alive it shows his lack of concern for the lives of his five children.

The Australian, who moved with his children to Syria to fight with the terrorist group, was believed to have been killed in a drone strike last year.

But someone claiming to be the convicted terrorist has made threatening calls to people in Sydney over attempts by the NSW Crime Commission to seize his house, News Corp reports.

The federal government is unable to confirm whether Sharrouf is alive, Ms Bishop said in a statement yesterday.

However, the foreign minister is disturbed by the media reports, which come a week after it was reported his wife Tara Nettleton had died from complications from appendicitis.

“Mr Sharrouf joined the violent terrorist organisation Daesh in Syria and Iraq, and recklessly brought his wife and five children into a conflict zone controlled by the group,” Ms Bishop said.

“If Mr Sharrouf is alive it is clear that he continues to show the same lack of concern for human life, including that of his family.”

Ms Bishop said reports of Ms Nettleton’s death raise serious concerns about the welfare of the children.

Deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek has described Sharrouf as a “repugnant” man and one of the worst people to leave Australia to fight with Islamic State.

“I don’t think people shed a tear when the initial reports of his death came through,” she said yesterday.

High alert due to freezing cold New York City is on high alert and mayor Bill de Blasio is warning residents to stay indoors because of the wave of bitter cold that is set to intensify.

De Blasio said the coldest weather in over 20 years began last week when temperatures began to drop below zero.

On Saturday night they could sink as low as -31°C because of the expected chill from winds between 40 and 48 km/h).

“These temperatures can be life threatening - especially for seniors, infants and people with medical conditions,” De Blasio said, and advised people to stay home and take

care of each other. Due to the danger of freezing temperatures, municipal employees and volunteers have been searching for homeless people and taking them to shelters.

Some of the homeless have gone to shelters voluntarily while others have sought refuge at hospitals or others places in the city where they are allowed to stay and keep warm during the very cold weather.

People who have to go out for any reason are warned to wear several layers of clothing, cover their faces and return home as quickly as possible.

Officers charged over jail brawl The warden, superintendent and a guard have been arrested on murder charges after a prison riot in northern Mexico that killed 49 people.

Prosecutors said that three state officers had been charged with murder in connection to the riot, but did not identify them by name or position. The two prison officials were also charged with abuse of authority.

On Thursday, rival factions of the Zetas drug cartel slaughtered each other inside the Topo Chico prison. The guard who was charged with murder fired on an inmate and

killed him, prosecutors said. State prosecutor Roberto Flores said prison director Gregoria Salazar Robles and superintendent Jesus Fernando Dominguez Jaramillo were charged for not maintaining the necessary security measures inside the prison.

Investigators determined inmates had bats and metal bars that were used in the bloodbath. Some cells did not have locks and inmates were out and about at times they should not have been.

Many prisons in Mexico are under the control of the inmates.

Ready to rock in South Australia

The Prairie Hotel in south Australia has hosted Hollywood stars such as Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel.

I

’m lost in South Australia’s enormous blue skies and endless outback, when suddenly my companion, John, slams on the brakes, forcing me to grip the dashboard as we come to a screeching halt in our 4WD. The obstruction is an emu standing nonchalantly in the middle of the road.

The flightless bird is staring at us intently, so I slowly reach for my camera. But just as I click the shutter, he’s off, waving goodbye with a flurry of tail feathers.

I’m travelling around the Flinders Ranges, South Australia’s largest mountain range, a fourhour drive north of the state’s capital, Adelaide.

Mighty red gum trees line our route, across dried-up riverbeds and alongside jagged ridges in a rainbow of browns, greens, and yellows. Some rocks here are 650 million years old and conceal a vast collection of well-preserved Ediacaran fossils, the oldest known complex life on earth.

The yellow-footed rock wallaby is a far more recent inhabitant of the area, and its numbers are rebounding, following a decline due to habitat destruction and poaching.

But that doesn’t make them any easier to find. I stand at the side of the road in front of a large ridge where the cute little marsupials are known to congregate, carefully examining every rock and outcrop without success, until suddenly in the corner of my vision, I see movement.

A dozen wallabies are shifting around on the rocks, balancing with their long striped tails. I’m amazed at their camouflage.

I snap a few photos before we continue our journey through the

heart of the gorge. The road leads us to the eastern side of Wilpena Pound, the showpiece of the region that looks a bit like a giant, deflated souffle.

Rather than scaling the Pound’s mountainous rim, I access the middle through Wilpena Gap. Measuring 17km by 8km, the geological formation was once used by farmers to raise livestock and grow crops. Now the land belongs to the state.

There are several walking routes in the area, which take from one hour to several days to complete. Routes are well signposted but care should still be taken. The brother of South Australia’s former premier John Bannon, got lost on a walk here in 1959, and his skeletal remains were found in the Pound 18 months later.

Park Station, a working sheep station. My plush villa is at the top end of their room options, which also include standard cabins and a campground and caravan area. One of the former sheering sheds is now the finedining Woolshed restaurant and a particular delight.

Before tucking into a kangaroo steak, I jump back in our 4WD to tour some of the station’s 29,000 hectares on a dusk safari. Parrots and rosellas streak through the air, emus bob their heads in the distance and kangaroos thump the ground as they bound away from our vehicle.

“The reds ones are the better meat,” my safari guide says with a laugh, making me feel somewhat reluctant to head back for dinner.

But my thoughts quickly turn elsewhere when we crack open a bottle of wine at a picnic spot

and watch the western wall of the Pound turn golden at sunset.

Next stop is Blinman, a dusty old mining town in the northern Flinders Ranges. We break for lunch at the general store, where I devour a meat pie and a quandong milkshake made from local fruit.

With our bellies full, we continue to Parachilna and the Prairie Hotel. An old steel windmill creaks as it slowly spins and a lizard scuttles across the entrance as we approach the door.

But once inside, I relax. Corridors are lined with Aboriginal art for sale, and the front bar attracts people from all over the area.

It’s no wonder the hotel has hosted Hollywood stars such as Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel, and even featured as a backdrop for a recent story arc in Home And Away, as well as parts of the horror movie Wolf Creek.

While sharing a bottle of red with John and the barman, I ask why so many Brits come here.

“To say they survived,” he quips.

Wales subdue Scotland

By Justin Palmer Wales has extended Scotland’s losing Six Nations championship run to nine matches with second-half tries from Jamie Roberts and George North securing a 27-23 victory yesterday.

Lacklustre Wales, second best for an hour under a closed roof at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, sparked into life when Roberts barged over and then North touched down after a strong diagonal run.

Wales, who rallied from 13-0 down to draw 16-16 with Ireland in their tournament opener last weekend, scored the game’s opening try through scrumhalf Gareth Davies but Scotland re-

plied soon after via winger Tommy Seymour.

Three Greig Laidlaw penalties put Scotland 16-13 up midway through the second half before Wales pulled clear.

Duncan Taylor’s late converted try proved only a consolation.

“Historically we tend to get gradually better as the tournament goes on.

“That’s a bit better than last week, but you’ve got to give credit to Scotland. The way they’re playing they don’t deserve to be zero from two matches,” Wales captain Sam Warburton told the BBC. Scotland, beaten 15-9 at home

by England a week ago, have not defeated Wales since 2007 and

have not won in Cardiff for 14 years.

Wales began with a bang with scrumhalf Davies, who appeared suspiciously offside, crossing after six minutes.

Scotland were hammered 51-3 on their last visit to Cardiff in 2014 when they had Stuart Hogg sent off, and the fullback enjoyed a brighter afternoon until injury forced him out of the game after half an hour.

Despite the loss of their most potent attacking threat, Scotland continued to make metres against a retreating Welsh defence and got reward with two Laidlaw penalties, either side of one from Biggar, to put the Scots 13-10 up at the break.

Having lacked attacking inspiration, winger Tom James’ electric 60-metre burst down the flank finally sparked the hosts into life on 58 minutes.

Scotland centre Duncan Taylor had to make a try-saving tackle on the left winger.

The crowd ignited, Wales exerted intense pressure in the next few minutes before Roberts crashed over from close range to put his side ahead for the first time since their early try.

North then made the game safe when he ran in unopposed from the Scotland 22, leaving Vern Cotter’s men to wonder just when the next Six Nations win will come.

France ends drought with narrow victory

As New Zealand’s Super Rugby teams put the finishing touches on their season preparations, most players will appreciate the scale of opportunity this year presents.

This will be an open-door year, a chance for ambitious emerging talents and older war horses alike to stake a claim for a significant number of vacated All Blacks jerseys.

This will be a year of change for the All Blacks when they have to rebuild and evolve much the same way they had to in 2012.

The search begins from the first weekend of Super Rugby because, in mid-May, the All Blacks will most likely have a wider squad training camp. Experience has shown the coaches that it’s best to back those with potential sooner rather than later.

The pressures of being an All Black are intense and the current coaching regime like to select promising young talent and then gently increase their game-time over a 12-18 month period.

The Lions are coming in 16 months and the All Blacks have to be ready, which is why they are likely to pick a few new players for the three-test series against Wales in June and then introduce a few more on the end-of-year tour to the United States, Ireland, Italy and France.

The All Blacks also have to be conscious about having too much experience tied up in older legs.

What they don’t want is for senior players such as Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, Ben Smith and Owen Franks to reach the end of 2018, hit the wall and then have to be replaced by younger players who have barely played.

A mix of experience, pace, youth and excitement wins World Cups and the All Blacks are constantly trying to maintain that balance.

They will be pushed towards youth this year following the retirements of Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock after the World Cup. The so-called golden generation has gone and, while in most cases there are ready-made replacements, the All Blacks will be looking to rebuild depth.

“We go back into an information-gathering phase for six months and keep an eye on Super Rugby and try to put the jigsaw together,” All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster said.

“If you look at 2011 to 2012, we changed 30 to 40 per cent of the team to the point where we arrived at the World Cup with 15 of the 31 who played at the last World Cup. If you keep that sort of mix, you get a nice balance.” - NZME

Week three of the Muirhead Rosebowl senior cricket competition produced wins for Allenton and Methven, while Coldstream had the bye.

Allenton took a hard-fought four wicket win over Tech to keep Stags winless in the Rosebowl competition and without a victory since their seven wicket win over Coldstream on January 9.

Tech won the toss and elected to bat.

“Opener Callum Gallagher (9) was first to go after being dismissed by paceman Shaun Stagg (2 for 30 off 9) for his first wicket in almost a year on his return from a back injury.

Fellow opener Hayden Sinclair

produced a fine performance, posting 56 to top score, but was eventually caught by skipper Jeff Naish off the bowling of Thomas Bird.

Middlemen Henry Cook (20) and Harry Jones (23 not out) made solid contributions, before Stagg dismissed Cook for his second wicket of the day.

Tech went on to bat out their allotted 45 overs, finishing with 173 for nine.

In reply, Allenton chased down Tech’s total in the 40th over with four wickets intact.

Jason Morrison removed openers Josh Worsfold (10) and Jeff Naish (1) in quick time but Jordan Bird (25) and Jemmett (32) steadied the ship.

Matt Tait (61) produced a fine

effort with the bat to top score before Bird (6 not out) and Sean Strange (4 not out) pushed the home side over the line and propelled Allenton to the top of the Rosebowl ladder in the process.

After downing Tech in their last outing, Methven produced another upset with a 46 run win over Lauriston in Saturday’s opposite fixture.

Methven were all out for 119 in the 35th over, with Englishman Sam Medhurst (31) top scoring in a largely forgettable team display with the bat.

Michael Gilbert was in fine form for Lauriston, taking four for 25 off his seven overs, while Rob Hooper (2 for 6 off 3 overs) also had a good day with the ball.

Lauriston will endeavour to

put their dismal reply behind them as quickly as possible after posting a meagre 73 all out.

Max Bullivant played the role of chief destroyer for Methven, taking an exceptional five for 17 off his seven overs while Ben Payne (2 for 12 off 9 overs) and Medhurst (2 for 11 off 5 overs) also had a good day with the ball.

Saturday’s results send Allenton to the top of the Studholme Shield standings on 17 points, closely followed by Tech and Coldstream on 16.

Week four will offer up some exciting match-ups as Allenton take on a wounded Lauriston, who will be desperate to register their first win of the campaign, and Coldstream lock horns with Tech while Methven have the bye.

After Moody wished him well for the match, Gayle signed off by saying: “Cheers Tom. Don’t blush, Tom.” He then burst into laughter.

Unfortunately Gayle failed to deliver with the same success on the field as he was dismissed for a golden duck in Lahore’s four run victory.

Gayle was fined $10,000 last month after making inappropriate comments to Channel 10 reporter Mel McLaughlin in a live TV interview.

McLaughlin was embarrassed by the fallout around the incident, prompting an apology of sorts from Gayle.

Gayle claimed his exchange with McLaughlin was a “joke”, said he had no intention of being disrespectful and that “these things happen”.

Phil Mickelson is close to breaking the longest victory drought of his career after surging two shots clear in the US PGA Tour’s Pebble Beach tournament.

The 45-year-old American has gone 52 events since his last win, which came at the 2013 British Open at Muirfield.

But the five-time major champion needed only 21 putts yesterday as he shot a bogey-free sixunder-par 66 to claim the lead at 16-under.

Japan’s Hiroshi Iwata (69) is lying second with Sweden’s Freddie Jacobsen (68) a shot further back, along with South Korea’s Sung Kang (70), who struggled to back up his Monterey Peninsula course record second round of 60.

“It’s fun to be back in the thick of it,” said Mickelson after claiming his first 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since the 2013 US Open at Merion.

Australia’s world No.3 Jason Day (68) and Australian Open champion Matt Jones (67) are tied for eighth but six shots behind Mickleson.

They face a huge task to catch Mickelson, who has dominated at Pebble Beach previously, winning the event in 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2012.

Playing just the second tournament of his pro career, 17-yearold Australian Ryan Ruffels shot a two-over 73 on the Monterey course to drop back to a tie for 23rd.

Not for the first time this week Ruffels was wildly inconsistent, mixing six bogeys with four birdies in the round and had his third penalty drop in as many rounds, this time on the par-four 17th.

World No.1 Jordan Spieth struggled once again, shooting a two-over 74 on the Pebble Beach course to finish yesterday’s round at one-under and just make the cut.

Cameron Smith (-7), Aaron Baddeley (-3), Steven Bowditch and Rhein Gibson (-1) were the other Aussies to survive the third round cut.

The six players closest to Mickelson on the leaderboard have combined for four PGA Tour victories. Mickelson is going for his 43rd.

Mickelson, however, wasn’t taking anything for granted.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve been in contention and it would mean a lot to me to be able to play a good final round tomorrow,” he said.

“And as well as I’ve been hitting the ball, the score was great, but the ball striking wasn’t indicative of how I’ve been hitting it.

“So I would like to get that dialed in for tomorrow’s round.”

Ashburton College took a first innings win over St Andrew’s 2nd XI at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

On the opening day last Satur-

day, St Andrew’s were all out for 187 in 59.4 overs in their first innings with James Symes (56) the visitors’ best with the bat.

Gareth Hunt took three for 23 off his 9.4 overs, while Jarod Hopwood (2 for 10 off 4 overs) also

had a good day with the ball.

In reply, Ashburton College declared at 220 for nine in the 60th over following a fine effort from Josh Gill (51).

In their second innings St Andrew’s were all out for 189, this

time in 69.5 overs with Angus Gilbert posting a fine 57 to top score.

After 7.5 overs of College’s second innings, the skippers decided to call the match a draw with little time remaining.

New signing Issac Luke, veteran Manu Vatuvei and comeback secondrower Ben Henry all came through their first appearances of the year unscathed as the Warriors overcame the Titans 40-18 in yesterday’s NRL trial in Whangarei. The senior trio all came off the field as planned and didn’t return, each of them making strong contributions.

There was much to like in a hit-out in which the Warriors finished with a line-up dominated by players still NYC-eligible or only just out of the grade. Two of them - Bunty Afoa and Semisi Tyrell - scored four of the side’s seven tries and Ata Hingano kicked four conversions. - NZME

Hurrell a star Konrad Hurrell scored an important try as the World All Stars defeated the Australian Indigenous All Stars 12-8 in front of almost 40,000 fans in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Warrior Hurrell, playing in the centers, scored the first touchdown of the game and afterwards Indigenous All Stars captain Greg Inglis criticised Todd Greenberg’s comments about the future of the All Stars event. In front of 37,339 thrilled fans at Suncorp, the future of the All Stars was surely confirmed. It was a brutal clash, with players steamrolled, crunched and in one frightening moment tipped on their head.

Black Caps facing uphill struggle to survive With two full days to play in the opening test, New Zealand appeared to be at their capacity for survival at stumps on the third day.

New Zealand reached 178 for four and faced a deficit of 201 runs to make Australia chase in a fourth innings.

Their original two-and-a-half day mortgage had been 379 after Australia made 562 in their first innings.

New Zealand were on the cusp of passing their examination but the final act of the day tipped the scales against them.

Captain Brendon McCullum was adjudged lbw for 10 to Mitchell Marsh. His final test outing at the venue could not be resuscitated via DRS. Debutant Henry Nicholls was 31 not out.

Before McCullum’s exit New Zealand had probably lost one too many wickets to have passed

with flying colours but, by the same token, there was no evidence of hauling up the white flag.

The match was played under the backdrop of a fire on the Mt Victoria hillside, but the Black Caps did not self-combust.

Amid the cacophony of sirens, Martin Guptill contributed a free-flowing 45 off 55 balls in an opening stand of 81 with Tom Latham.

Guptill’s flaming bat was doused by Nathan Lyon.

His spinning delivery floated above Guptill’s eyeline and dipped as the opener wound into a slog. Marsh circled backwards to take a steepling catch.

Tom Latham top-scored with 63 and Kane Williamson made 22.

Williamson’s dismissal was arguably the key moment, given his test performances have become a barometer for New Zealand.

His contest with Josh Hazlewood was riveting. The Australian right-armer peppered him with balls, 14 out of 17 to be precise, channelled just outside off stump. The Australians were jubilant that their plan worked.

New Zealand’s test legacy in the Mike Hesson/McCullum coach/ captain era faces its toughest scrutiny today.

Earlier, Adam Voges continued his extraordinary form to finish on 239. His caught and bowled to Mark Craig completed 614 runs between dismissals. That leaves him with a test average of 97.46.

The resilience, fitness and techniques of the New Zealand batsmen face the microscope as they attempt to extend their 13 tests undefeated at home, a record level with their predecessors feats’ from March 1987 to January 1992.

New Zealand will need to muster similar concentration powers

in the third innings to what they did in 2014 and 2015 against India and Sri Lanka.

They were dismissed for 221 (to face a 135-run deficit against Sri Lanka) and 192 (to face a 246run deficit against India) but responded with declarations of 524-5 and 680-8 to win and draw those respective matches.

The Australians arguably have a more potent attack than those teams.

From a New Zealand perspective, the highlight of the morning was Corey Anderson’s caught and bowled off Lyon. Thrown off balance in his follow-through, Anderson lurched from one foot to the other and threw his left hand at it.

The ball stuck before he somersaulted forward as though dismounting from a vault.

A reformed Russell Packer has been hailed as St George Illawarra’s missing link after a promising showing in Saturday’s 18-14 Charity Shield loss to South Sydney.

After spending a year in jail and more than two years out of the NRL, the former Kiwi Test prop is pushing for a spot in the Dragons’ line up for round one. Given the green light to revive his career, Packer played his first game for the side in a trial the week before but Saturday’s Charity Shield was the Red V faithful’s first real look at the 26-year-old. While the match never reached great heights, Packer made a good impact.

Hopoate limped from the field in Saturday’s 24-20 loss to Penrith in an NRL trial, while Morris is in doubt for round one as he continues to battle a knee injury that required a cleanout in December.

Clark justifies favouritism Sam Clark backed up his pre-race confidence to run away from the field to claim his first Coast to Coast men’s World Championship longest day title on Saturday.

Clark, who was second behind three-time defending champion Braden Currie last year, went into the 33 kilometre mountain run with 15 leaders after the first 55 kilometre cycle leg, but was quick to put the hammer down to blast over Goat Pass in under three hours to head into the short cycle and 67 kilometre kayak leg with a 23 minute lead.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

“It really is a great feeling. Only those that know me well can actually appreciate just how long and how much I wanted this.

“It’s quite overwhelming to finally tick that box and finally call myself a Coast to Coast champion.”

Clark was a convincing winner in 11 hours 37minutes 7 seconds, coming home over 50 minutes ahead of Coast to Coast veteran 42-year-old Bob McLachlan who was racing the event for the first time in 25 years.

McLachlan said he exceeded his hopes of making the top 10 with his 12 hours 29 minutes effort which saw him overtake Australian Alex Hunt during the kayak leg.

With Currie not racing as he is focused on qualifying for this year’s Rio Olympics in the triathlon Clark was the favourite, something he embraced in the lead-up.

He made it clear he planned on leading from the front and being the man to beat as competitors tackled the 234 kilometre route from Kumara Beach on the West Coast to New Brighton Beach.

“This is the performance I wish I had last year,” Clark said.

“That the way things panned out, fortune said I’d come back and here I am and I’ve finally done it.”

Nelson’s Elina Ussher won her third women’s longest day title in 13 hours, 32 minutes after catching Myriam Guillot-Boisset from France in the second half of the race.

Ussher overcame severe leg cramps during the run saying she had to ‘stay mentally tough’ and work through the pain and not think about it and just keep pushing on.

“It wasn’t a very easy day for me but I’m very happy to win today,” Ussher said.

“I really felt quite bad after the run but I knew I just had to race my own race and keep it going.”

Guillot-Boisset held a four and a half minute lead after the mountain run but Ussher proved to be the better paddler catching her an hour into the kayak to win by six minutes.

Hayden Wilde, 18, made it a double header day for Whakatane athletes holding onto his overnight lead in the two-day men’s individual event to win in a time of 12:18.47 from Gerard Morrison and Peter Olds.

Ko defends New Zealand title A “severe” magnitude 5.7 earthquake that hit Christchurch just before Lydia Ko’s final round at the New Zealand Women’s Open tournament couldn’t derail the world No. 1’s title defence.

Ko, 18, won her third New Zealand Open in four years and second on the trot, posting a final round of two-under 70 to win by two strokes at Clearwater Resort yesterday.

Ko was just 10 minutes from teeing off in the final round when the quake, which caused a cliff to partially collapse in Sumner and cut power to around 70 homes, rumbled for 10 to 15 seconds.

The clubhouse at Clearwater swayed noticeable but on the course play continued uninterrupted.

Ko seemed undeterred as she made birdie at the par-5 second hole to move her overnight score of eight-under par to nine-under par and the outright lead.

Bring it on, says Purdon The boy will take on the men.

Two thumbs-up from Mark Purdon to Menangle chief David Wonson confirmed Have Faith In Me would take his spot in one of the most anticipated Miracle Miles for many years.

Have Faith In Me was so dominant and ran such quick time winning the Chariots Of Fire, he effectively forced Purdon’s hand.

“Yes, we’ll push ahead to the Miracle Mile now,” Purdon said.

“He won so well, seemed to come through it well … he’s in the zone.

“I only had a quick chat to Nat (Rasmussen), but he said he still felt strong on the line.

“She said he like he still had gears.”

Think about that line “still had gears.”

That’s astonishing when Have Faith In Me had just raced off the track throughout and thrashed a Group 1 field in a 1min48.8sec mile.

He went 1.9sec faster than the older horses Beautide and Monifeith did winning the two

She may be a difficult customer off the track but that fierce determination to do things her way saw speedy mare Red Dirt Girl salute the judge once again at Riccarton on the weekend. Successful in her first two starts for Kristine Stead the now six-year-old mare was transferred to Mike McCann after failing to add to those initial victories.

Since joining McCann the mare has taken on a new lease of life which has seen her register a further seven wins and five placings from just twenty appearances.

After walking the track and consulting with former champion horseman Colin Jillings, Xtravagant’s trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards and Te Akau principal David Ellis de-

cided on a bold directive to rider Matt Cameron.

“It’s been unbelievable and we made a plan before the race,” Autridge said.

“There was a strip along the fence that was perfect and the horse showed his class.

“We saved the ground and now it’s the Australian Guineas – bring it on.”

Xtravagant flew the gates to lead and Cameron was happy to let Allez Eagle and Trepidation go around him and then stuck to the game plan by cornering hard

up against the rail.

“It was an amazing run – we took the shortest way home and he’s got great acceleration,” Cameron said.

“It’s so exciting to see this horse back – we knew what we had.

“His turn of foot is blistering and he could race over 1000 metres at Flemington and do the same thing. He’s amazing for New Zealand racing.”

Best of the beaten brigade was Vespa, who took second from Recite with Sacred Star back in fourth.

Paddon says they just need to concentrate on keeping hold of second.

Monza’s future uncertain

By AlAn BAldwin The future of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza remains uncertain after this year with Formula One’s commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone saying yesterday that a deal had become more complicated.

The historic circuit near Milan, which has

been on the calendar every year bar one since the championship started in 1950, will host Italy’s only race in September but has no contract beyond 2016.

Big clash down to the wire

Hampstead took a tightly contested victory over Methven in a top-of-the-table open grade interclub clash at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Saturday.

Hampstead edged out the tie eight sets to seven, but were made to work hard for the result by their Methven counterparts.

Aiden Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan narrowly lost out to Methven’s Koji Kawamata and Sam Bubb over three sets in their

doubles encounter, but Christal Brosnahan and Erin ConnellyWhyte posted a win over Jarrad Hill and Jade Brosnahan to level proceedings.

Mitchell proved too good for Kawamata for a straight sets triumph in the singles, but Sam Bubb held his nerve to see off Connor Brosnahan in a third set tie breaker to add a win for Methven.

Hill made light work of Christal Brosnahan in a straight sets victory, but Hampstead took brag-

ging rights thanks to the set Connor Brosnahan had taken off Bubb.

Southern managed to register their first win in an exciting seven-sets-to-six victory over Fairton.

In the doubles, Tony Brosnahan and Nic Thomassen were beaten

by Don Lake and Phil Crozier 6-3, 6-7, 8-10, while Charlie Stock and Oliver McKeown lost out to MaryAnne Thyne and Bevan Crozier 6-3, 7-5.

In the singles, Tony Brosnahan

put Don Lake to the sword 6-3, 6-2 and Thomassen fell 6-3, 6-1 to Crozier to put Fairton up three matches to one.

Stock battled back to beat Thyne in straight sets and McKeown turned Crozier over 6-3, 7-6 to square it up at three matches each.

Allenton and Tinwald’s matchup saw current and former Gala Cup winners face off as Rhys Cromie locked horns with Neil McCann.

After losing the first set 5-2,

McCann outfoxed his younger opponent to win the second and third sets 5-7, 4-6.

Tessa McCann was in clinical form, disposing of Bryn Looij convincingly, losing just one game in the process, but Harry Dargue struck back for his Allenton side by beating Matt Bubb over three highly-competitive sets.

Allenton’s Mary-Ann Martin then downed Mathieu Lucas 6-3, 6-3 before both doubles matches went in Tinwald’s favour for a 4-2 overall win.
