Waikato woman Assil Russel, 27, is one of 17 winners of an AMP scholarship which was announced Thursday evening. She received $10,000 from the national “do your thing” category and the funds would go towards establishing New Zealand’s first charity mobile dental clinic to provide care in low-decile areas across the country. Ms Russel said it was “amazing” when she spoke to Newstalk ZB yesterday morning.

Baby rumours Actress Elizabeth Hurley has confirmed rumours her ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant is to become a dad again. The Notting Hill star’s Swedish partner, TV producer Anna Eberstein, was photographed apparently sporting a large baby bump in September, and according to editors at UK newspaper The Sun, Grant declined to comment on the speculation. However, on Thursday’s (NZ time) episode of US chat show Watch What Happens Live, Hurley was asked if she was surprised he had children and she responded, “He’s got three and one on the way. He was over 50 when he had all of them, but he’s a good daddy.” Grant has yet to comment on the baby news, but it will be the actor’s fourth child in as many years. He became a firsttime father in 2011 when his ex-girlfriend Tinglan Hong gave birth to their daughter, Tabitha.

Baloo and his rescuer When Athena London came to the rescue of a sick horse she had no idea it had a successful racing career behind it. The New Plymouth woman, who is wanting to move with the horse to Marton, has set up a givealittle page to help with the cost of bringing Baloo back to health. Ms London said she spotted the horse in a paddock looking ill and asked the owner if she could take it into her care. She thinks the horse is the former Skywalker which won more than $1 million when racing in Hong Kong. The owner wanted $500 for the animal, which she is paying off monthly. She is now working to get the horse back to peak condition. “We’ve had to get two vets in and an equine vet. We don’t have a lot of money but I couldn’t stand there and have him be in that condition without doing anything.” When she and Baloo moved to Marton people would be able to come and visit him, Ms London said.

Container ‘pathway’ unsafe BY SUE NEWMAN

It’s a story that had a rocky start, but one that has had a happy ending. For months a shipping container has formed part of the footpath on Burnett Street between East and Cass Street. It has propped up the wall of a partiallydemolished building and has become an accepted part of Ashburton’s street scape. But on Wednesday, Shell Petersen became one of several people who have fallen on the slippery wooden surface of the container. She tore her jeans and wrenched her knee. Two days later she’s still suffering and she’s still angry. “I’m 45 years old, I did the most amazing splits, but if I’d been an 80-year-old woman I’d have broken my hip,” she said. Ms Petersen contacted the Ashburton District Council and attempted to contact the building’s owners. Something had to be done to ensure no one else took a tumble, she said. She drew a blank with owner Graeme Thomson, but had better luck with the council. They confirmed there had been other complaints lodged about the container and said they’d look at what could be done. Building services manager Michael Wong said he had been work-

ing with Mr Thomson over insurance issues around the demolition. The container and its condition were Mr Thomson’s responsibility, but it was there at the council’s request because of public safety over the partially-completed demolition, he said. Mr Wong said he had worked with other building owners to help move their demolition projects forward when there were issues around insurance and he was working with Mr Thomson to try and get a resolution to the current impasse. “I’m in dialogue with him to get a set time frame. I’m trying to work with him and his insurance company to push the demolition along,” he said. Mr Thomson had replaced the plywood flooring in the container at least once to ensure the surface was safe, he said. Late yesterday the council took the container issue into its own hands, inspecting the site and declaring it unsafe. By Monday the container will be cordoned off and pedestrians will be redirected to the opposite side of the

pavement. “We’ve taken this seriously and we’ve taken action,” Mr Wong said. Mr Thomson is not alone in having unfinished earthquake repairs or demolition work, he said. “There are still earthquake repairs that are just starting in Ashburton and it’s been five years. There are people who have only just had their claims sorted to do foundation work.”

While bitterly cold weather brought rain to the Canterbury Show yesterday, it didn’t alleviate the serious drought situation in North Canterbury. North Canterbury Rural Support Trust chairman Doug Archbold said parts of North Canterbury received between eight to 10mm of rain, but it was sporadic with many places not receiving any moisture.

“The problem we’ve got in North Canterbury is that the moisture is on the top and there are no reserves as such. The nor’wester has kept away and that’s been great but if it comes back …” Any rain falling now was “probably” too late for hill country properties, he said. “Already the hill country has stopped growing, particularly on the sunny faces.” Many sheep had been grazed outside of the district in Mid and South Canterbury, but now hog-

down with them to talk through their options. “The main thing is to get a better understanding to the urban population about what is happening in the heartland because it’s going to affect Christchurch.” Rangitata electorate MP Jo Goodhew spoke of the need to deliver irrigation storage options locally and acknowledged the suffering of farmers in North Canterbury. “I want to thank the people on

the Rural Support Trust because it is helping. Agribusiness and Federated Farmers is getting together shoulder to shoulder to get farmers through it.” The $500,000 the Government put towards rural mental health was “very very important”, she said. On a recent trip to South Australia, Ms Goodhew was asked about the Government’s support of rural mental health as it was considered a valuable initiative.

■ METHVEN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE

25 years and counting By Erin TaskEr When Arthur Watson heard the fire siren as a child, he’d race out the door, cut across a couple of sections and try and race the firefighters to the station. Today, he still races to the station when that siren sounds. For the past 25 years, the man who is known by most as Gunner – a name partly inherited from his father, and partly due to his love of deerstalking – has been a dedicated member of the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade. Last weekend, that service was marked at the brigade’s honours night where Gunner received his 25-year gold star. For Gunner the brigade is a family, and days after he proudly accepted his gold star, the memory of the night brings a tear to his eye. “When I went up there (to collect his award) I got a standing ovation, and that just floored me,” he said. He was the man of the moment as he became the brigade’s 17th gold star recipient (eight of which are still serving), while others received certificates and bars to mark smaller service milestones. “They’re all important people within the brigade. We’re all small cogs that make the big one work,” Gunner said. Gunner said one of the brigade’s newer members sent him a text message thanking him for all he’d taught him. “I text him back and said ‘don’t look over your shoulder mate, your turn will be here before you know it’.” Gunner joined in May 1990, after years as a volunteer with Methven Land Search and Rescue, and becoming a firefighter fulfilled a dream he’d had since his childhood, where racing to beat the firefighters to the station was a challenge every time the siren sounded.

Doctor let off A doctor who aimed his yacht at a police boat multiple times during a pursuit through an Auckland harbour has escaped conviction for a second time in exchange for a $10,000 donation to charity. Carl Francis Harmer was discharged without conviction in Auckland District Court yesterday on charges of failing to comply with police directions and operating a ship dangerously. Judge Robert Ronayne granted the discharge on the condition Harmer make a $10,000 donation to drug rehabilitation trust Higher Ground. The boating incident occurred just a week before Harmer was charged with drink driving after leaving a party. He also avoided conviction on that charge. - NZME

His first callout was to a car wrapped around a power pole. Its occupant was a good friend of Gunner’s. Being a volunteer firefighter in a small community, there was always a chance a call-out would involve someone you knew, and for Gunner, that lesson came early. “There’s a lot of nice calls, but it’s a small town where you know everybody and a lot of time you just have to switch off and do the job, and get back to the station and have a debrief,” Gunner said. Firefighters these days do far more than just fight fires. They attend fires, car crashes, assist ambulance crews, were faced with the unimaginable when they helped out in Christ-

church after the earthquakes, and they even get the odd one like a dog which got stuck between two buildings – that happened a few years back. The solution in that case was to squirt some water down the gap in the buildings and the dog soon found its way out. Volunteer brigades like Methven are seeing their call-out numbers increase most years, increasing the commitment required, and the impact on their working and family lives. For 44 years Gunner worked at what is now Silver Ferns Farms Fairton, as well as going into a farming partnership with a couple of mates, before going farming on his own. But now 62, Gunner has spent his last season at the works, and

after a couple of knee replacements admits he’s a bit more limited when it comes to firefighting these days. But he still takes his seat on the brigade’s appliances when he can, and is able to spend more time at home with wife Rose. Rose, and many of Gunner’s siblings, were at last weekend’s celebrations, adding to what was already a special night – a night which Gunner will remember for years to come thanks to his fellow brigade members. Among the things he took home to mark his 25 years was a personalised helmet, and a photobook made up by a fellow brigade member Mark Allred. It was a book full of memories and something that Gunner will cherish forever.

Firefighters merge ‘talents’ All firefighters including volunteers, career staff and brigades in urban and rural areas will be pulled together into a single national service under reforms announced today by the Government. The changes were the biggest reform of the fire service since 1947, when the Ballantyne’s store fire in Christchurch led to an overhaul of the sector, Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne said. The reforms promised greater investment in volunteer firefighting, which made up 80 per cent of the sector. But the main funding source - levies on home insurance - would not change. This was despite concerns about whether the Fire Service’s

expansion beyond simply fighting fires to attending car crashes and other emergencies was being matched by funding from other parts of the community - such as car owners. The finer details about funding would be “resolved over the next little while”, Mr Dunne said. The reforms also included plans to address an alleged culture of bullying within some fire brigades - described by the Minister as the elephant in the room. In a speech in Wellington, Mr Dunne said the new national service was not a takeover by the Beehive or by Fire Service headquarters, but a “merging of the talents”. The changes stemmed from a 2013 review, which found that fire

services had no legal mandate for their expanded role which included search and rescue and motor vehicle extrications. A further Government-led review this year underlined the need for changes to the service, in particular more support for volunteers, making sure fire services met community expectations, and modernising the service to make it fit for the 21st century. The single, integrated national fire service would recognise and respect the differences between the various parts of the sector, Mr Dunne said. In order to maintain a strong regional voice, a series of regional committees would be set up. The new national body would be responsible for resourcing

fire services, training and professional standards, but would work with the regional committees on “delivery matters”. Mr Dunne promised the new investment in volunteers would not affect the paid workforce. He also said he was committed to ensuring the service had an appropriate level of funding for equipment, training, back-up and support. On the issue of bullying, the Minister said the new organisation would be tasked with ensuring all staff worked more effectively together. Over the last two years, various reports of intimidation and unfair dismissal have emerged at several brigades across the country. - NZME

Three children in a stolen car were injured when it lost control and rolled down a 4m bank during a police pursuit in Waikato yesterday. The car could have been travelling as fast as 135km/h before it crashed just off State Highway 1 north of Huntly, a witness said. The occupants – a 10-year-old boy and two 13-year-old girls – were taken to Waikato Hospital after the crash. The underage driver, who TV3 reported was one of the girls, lost control at high speed. - NZME

Black Power tangi Whanganui could be inundated with Black Power members this weekend, as gang associates arrive for the city chapter leader’s tangi. Police are continuing to investigate Craig Campbell Rippon’s death and say they have charged six men with his murder. The 57-year-old was Black Power’s Whanganui leader. He died in hospital after being assaulted on Sunday afternoon. Police said his tangi was this weekend and Black Power members from outside the region were expected to attend. -NZME

Brazen theft Brazen thieves have stolen a brass World War One commemoration plaque from a quiet Central Otago cemetery, a theft police describe as “reprehensible”. The brass plaque was taken from a headstone at the Omakau Cemetery sometime after Tuesday. “The theft of this plaque is a reprehensible act,” Senior Constable Darren Cox, of Omakau police, said. “Not only is it the theft, but the significance of the plaque to the family that has caused a lot of distress.” The distinctive round bronze plaque depicts both Brittania and a lion, and is engraved with the name Samuel Corrigal. - NZME

Ashburton woman Melissa Gawn believes post-natal support should be more readily available. Struggling with post-natal depression after the birth of daughter Elayna in 2011, Mrs Gawn thought she just had the “baby blues”. However still in shock after her traumatic road-side birth, things didn’t get easier when she returned home to look after her two other children. Tired, angry and unable to sleep, it took time before she realised what was going on and was given the help she needed. With her midwife only on deck for six weeks, Mrs Gawn said it would have been impossible for her to notice the emotional changes. In the wake of Post-Natal Awareness Week and Plunket pushing its Post-Natal Adjustment Programme (PNAP), Mrs Gawn is encouraging women suffering

from post-natal depression to seek help. “I decided not to do counselling with a therapist because I didn’t feel comfortable with the idea; I know some people find it really helpful,” she said. “But I think a support group where you can discuss with other women would be better, for people like me anyway.” Plunket PNAP co-ordinator Jacquie Taleni said the programme is run for mothers in Ashburton with referrals from GPs, midwives and Plunket nurses. However, women can also self-refer. Women are encouraged to attend the PNAP support group on the first and third Thursday of the month at the local Plunket rooms. Ms Taleni said Plunket had a wide variety of mothers in attendance for different reasons, some who even bring their children along.

Drinkers spooked by lower limits A hotel industry chief says pub patrons have been “spooked” by lowered drinkdriving limits. Posters and coasters indicating how much drivers can safely drink and stay under the limit will soon appear in southern hotels, as part of a national campaign by Hospitality New Zealand. Otago branch president Mark Scully, of Dunedin, said some patrons were nervous because they did not understand how much alcohol they could drink and still drive.

“The biggest concerns to publicans right now is the fact that customers are generally spooked.” Many patrons were abstaining and it was financially hurting the hospitality industry, he said. “People won’t even come in for one glass of wine with dinner because they are scared they are going to be over the limit.” Hospitality NZ is promoting “rule of thumb” guidelines created by the government-owned Institute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd. - NZME

A survey of nearly 10,000 Consumer New Zealand members has ended in victory for home appliance and technology store 100% Appliances. The company has been awarded Consumer NZ’s 2015 People’s Choice Awards. Mitre 10 was runner-up. The survey saw 9555 Consumer New Zealand members rate retailers on price, range, point-of-sale and after-sale service. Consumer NZ also asked how likely members would be to recommend the stores. Comments from those taking the survey suggested friendly, helpful patient customer service were hallmarks of good retailers. Respondents disliked “pushy” sales people, Consumer NZ said. Sue Chetwin, Consumer NZ chief executive, said she was pleased to see “a big-box retailer like Mitre 10 show it could win the battle for people’s hard-earned cash through good customer service”. Hampstead School staff may now be better equipped to deal with children’s anxiety following a seminar this week. Carmen Murphy from the Canterbury District Health Board’s school-based mental health team held an anxiety seminar at the school last week. Principal Peter Melrose said 30 Hampstead School staff attended the talk which covered youth anxiety – what it meant for children, recognising the signs and ways to address it. Being able to help students with anxiety problems was important for teachers because the issue was prevalent in most schools around the country. “Anxiety is a normal part of life – it’s when anxiety occurs inappropriately, is mismatched to an event that we need to address reactions and assistance. “Anxiety becomes a problem when our body reacts in the absence of real danger.” Hampstead School’s main priority was academic education but to be able to teach effectively, staff needed to support their students as a whole in terms of their

Geraldine hummed with activity yesterday on day one of the town’s annual Arts and Plants festival. The boulevard market, set up in the CBD, bristled with stalls selling everything the Christmas shopper or those wishing to stock up on garden plants could want. Longtime stallholder Elaine Mallinson was doing a good trade with her hardy plants grown in the Four Peaks district and Timaru shopper Shirley Ayers had just the spot for some. “We are already on water restrictions in Timaru, I come out here every year but I’m looking for something that will stand up to a dry summer,” she said. At a nearby stall Jenny McColl, from Ashburton, was selling her Angelic Angels – made from concrete and corrugated iron. She is also a regular at the event which attracts people from near and far to the town. “We’ve had a great day, it’s always a lovely environment down here,” she said. The Rakaia Lions, in conjunction with the Rakaia Bowling Club and the town’s Anglican parish were offering lily bulbs. “They’ve been selling really well, there’s a lot of people about

Farmers to focus on resizing proposal A Fonterra shareholder proposal to reduce the size of the co-operative’s board will be discussed in Ashburton on Monday. The proposal has been put forward by Colin Armer and Greg Gent, in the form of a Special Resolution to change the constitution of the company to reduce from 13 directors to nine directors (six elected and three appointed). The resolution requires 50 per cent Shareholders’ Council support and 75 per cent or more of shareholder votes to be in fa-

vour for it to succeed. The Shareholders’ Council does not support this proposal. Their position does not stop the proposal going forward for a shareholder vote. If the shareholder vote was in favour, the Shareholders’ Council would then have the option to rescind their stance. Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers vice-president Jessie Dorman said it is important that shareholders have the opportunity to fully understand the pros and cons of the proposal and the implications of any change.

“Federated Farmers are not forming an opinion on the proposal, instead we are ensuring that shareholders have the opportunity to hear all sides of the debate so they can form their own views,” she said. “The future direction of the cooperative depends on the shareholders being engaged and it is important that you exercise your right to vote.” Mr Armer and Mr Gent will present the proposal and answer any questions at the meeting at the Hotel Ashburton on Monday, at 11am.

Spectators and officials stopped in their tracks when a platoon of soldiers dressed in World War One uniforms marched into the main arena of the Christchurch A&P Show on Wednesday. But these were not enlisted soldiers, rather they were members of the reassembled Canterbury Mounted Rifles marking Armistice Day in 1918, signalling the end of the Great War. The 20-strong contingent, which received a rousing reception throughout the three-day show, formed prior to Anzac Day, assembling 100 mounted riders for the Anzac centennial year celebrations in North Canterbury. “That’s how we all got together, from that we set up the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust, which benefits the Fallen Heroes Trust that looks after the families of servicemen and women who don’t return home,” trooper and sponsor Mark Appleton said. The troopers come from all over Canterbury, they all own their own horses and maintain their own kit, rifles and all. “We are all self-funded so all profits go to the charity. We get nothing out of it other than the pleasure of doing it,” Mr Appleton. Some of the riders are descendants of men who formed the original Canterbury Mounted Rifles who left to fight at Gallipoli 100 years ago, and proudly wear some of their grandparents’ uniforms. Other pieces of uniform and kit have been purchased from online trading posts. “Because I’m a pom, most of my uniform literally came off

At 75 years of age, part-time horse trainer Mike Donaldson has both the military experience and knowledge with horses to make a big contribution. “He remembers the Lee Enfield rifle very well,” Mr Appleton. “He’s taught us all the full military drill with the rifle.”

He said the troopers were inspired by people’s interest, and had accumulated a fair amount of history on the Mounted Rifles. Aided by a Dunedin-based historian they have produced a DVD. The next project on the agenda is to find a patron for the charitable trust. “The one we would really like to get is Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata,” Mr Appleton said. “It would accelerate our takings for Fallen Heroes massively.” Requests keep rolling in for the riders to appear at events, the most recent from the Otago

A&P Show. The riders have also offered to appear with a horse in schools. And anyone who can ride a horse and has an interest is welcome to make enquiries about joining the group, which trains every second weekend to practise military drills and ‘tent pegging’ – a wartime sport which involves galloping with a lance and picking up wooden tent pegs. On Armistice Day, the Canterbury Mounted Rifle regiment marched into the area at precisely 11am to observe a minute’s silence.

During a day best suited to gumboots, parkas and umbrellas, the livestock pavilion was a popular place as people sought shelter from intermittent hail and rain showers at the Canterbury A&P Show yesterday. A sizable crowd had gathered to watch Symon Howard collect the Essential Nutrients Miss Canterbury trophy with his Suffolk ewe hogget – which the judge deemed “an exceptional sheep”. Mr Howard runs the Taronga Stud from Waitahuna, Otago, but the suffolk sheep stud was originally started by his grandparents Fred and Helen Howard in Mid Canterbury in the 1980s with a handful of sheep. Since taking it over in 2001, Mr Howard has built it up and now runs more than 120 stud ewes. “There’s still some of the original bloodlines coming through,” he said. He likes the temperament of

the black-faced breed, and the fact they produce fast growing, meat lambs. The Canterbury show is the holy grail for sheep farmers and Mr Howard is no stranger to show ring success, taking the same trophy three years ago with yesterday’s winner’s mother. With the quality of sheep he was up against, Mr Howard was “pretty pleased” with the win. “The lineup was impressive, but the judge obviously liked the look of her,” he said. He has been exhibiting at the Canterbury A&P Show for a number of years, and despite the distance he has to travel says it well worth the effort. “It’s a good chance to see how the sheep measure up against other studs,” he said.

Long hours blamed for forestry worker’s death The partner of a forestry worker killed when he was crushed between two felled trees has hit out at a coroner’s findings into his death. Michael Steven Langford, 28, was logging on a forestry site at Fox Hill Cemetery Road, Wakefield, near Nelson, when he was crushed to death on November 29, 2013. A coroner found Mr Langford was fatally crushed between the trees after failing to apply the handbrake on his skidder. The coroner said it was impossible to determine if this was a result of fatigue. The decision has angered his family. His partner Kim Moore said Mr Langford was working “endless hours” in the days and weeks leading up to his death, because he thought his bosses would not give him more work unless he performed. “He was tired because he was worried that if he didn’t get his job done to the satisfaction of his bosses, he would not get more work from them.” While Mr Langford was a contractor, Ms Moore said people further up the chain determined whether he would get work. “Michael told me that they had promised him more work and he needed to please them to get it.” The inquest heard Mr Langford was contracted by Total Harvest Solutions Ltd to clear 7000 tonnes of logs from the site, and his family and co-workers described how he worked long hours, and felt under pressure to complete the job by Christmas. However, the company and the owner of the site both told the inquest into his death that there had been no discussion about having the work completed for Christmas, and the end date on the contract was January, or whenever the marketable trees had been removed. Ms Moore told the inquest Mr Langford had been working long hours. Since he had started the job in September, she did not think he had taken a full day off, and had been working an average 14-plus hours a day. A co-worker said he showed signs of stress, while another said he was not his “normal happy self” that day. Coroner CJ Devonport said it was impossible to conclude whether Mr Langford was suffering fatigue. Only Mr Langford would know whether fatigue affected his failure to apply the handbrake on the skidder he was operating. Ms Moore said she understood an inquest into industrial accidents was to look at industry conditions and make recommendations to assist future policy.

Mid Canterbury youth are making the most of the Hype Youth Health Centre with nearly 900 young people utilising the service in the past year. Hype is a free and confidential service targeted at 12 to 24-yearolds in the Mid Canterbury community. It has been offering help with mental, social, physical and sexual issues since it opened nearly seven years ago. The centre also provides information on a variety of topics including nutrition, sexual and mental health and budgeting advice, and can refer youth to services such as Work and Income, Community Law, public health nurses and sexual health clinics. Co-ordinator Janet Hadley said during the past financial year 899 youth have used Hype’s services. Just over 600 of these were dropins and another 250 were through its outreach service. Since taking over the role as coordinator from Poppy CooperVear in December, Mrs Hadley

has worked with 103 males and 70 females, not including those in the outreach programme. “Over the past three months I have seen increases in relationship and home inquiries, as well as sexual health [and] I have also referred several young people on to GPs and also to Family Planning,” she said. Governed by a trust, the youth centre has recently appointed new trustees, bringing the total of youth and adult representatives to six apiece. The addition of young people to the trust brings an entirely new perspective, Mrs Hadley said. Madie Venmore-Kerr was reelected as chairwoman and, for the first time, the trust has a deputy chairman, Daniel Binsted from Mount Hutt College. Mrs Hadley said she believes Hype is a “much-needed and well-utilised” service in the community. “I have had some real success stories working with young people this year and I do enjoy working with them,” she said.

Taking it day by day is the secret to a long and happy marriage, according to Valmai and Ernie Ludemann. Having just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary, the couple know a thing or two about the key to a happy marital life. The couple met at a dance hall when Mrs Ludemann was 18. The pair married shortly after at St Paul’s Church in Oamaru in 1943. Farmers through and through, the couple moved from Oamaru to Eiffelton and finally to Mayfield before their son took over the family farm. The couple then decided it was time to settle in the Ashburton township and, still comfortable at home, the pair have no plans to move elsewhere in the near future. Both worked hard throughout their adult life, but have also made sure to enjoy their retirement. Mrs Ludemann was an avid embroiderer and together the couple went on many rallies with the Ashburton Vintage Car Club. Living a quieter life now, for this year’s milestone anniversary the couple decided to have a

quiet day at home and not make a fuss. Shortly after their anniversary the pair got together with 80 other family members for a

Twin suicide blasts kill 43 Twin suicide bombings struck a southern Beirut suburb that’s a stronghold of the militant Shiite Hezbollah group yesterday evening, killing at least 43 people and wounding scores more in one of the deadliest attacks in recent years in Lebanon. The attack was quickly claimed by the extremists Islamic State group, which is fighting in neighbouring Syria and Iraq but has not had a recognised affiliate in Lebanon, though the tiny Mediterranean country has seen deadly spillovers from the civil war next door. The explosions hit minutes apart during rush hour in an area of southern Beirut called Burj al-Barajneh, a Hezbollah stronghold. The Shiite group has been fighting in Syria along with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces. The area has been hit in the past and Sunni militant groups have threatened to carry out more attacks there. Along with the 43 killed, the bombings also wounded 239 people, the Health Ministry announced. It was not immediately clear how many attackers were involved. According to a Lebanese security official, the first suicide attacker detonated his explosives’ vest outside a Shiite mosque, while the second blew himself up inside a nearby bakery. was found dead, his legs blown off while he still wore an intact explosives’ belt, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. The official speculated that the third man may have been killed from the explosion set off by the second bomber, as he was reportedly close to that blast. The Al-Mayadeen TV also reported there was a third wouldbe bomber, and showed a video of a bearded young man with an explosives’ belt. The report said

he died before he was able to detonate his explosives. At the scene of the blasts, residents showed reporters what they said were metal pebbles that are usually put inside an explosive belt to inflict maximum casualties. “They targeted civilians, worshippers, unarmed people, women and elderly, they only targeted innocent people,” Hezbollah official Bilal Farhat told The Associated Press, calling it a “satanic, terrorist attack.”

Hospitals in southern Beirut called on people to donate blood and appealed on residents not to gather at hospital gates so that ambulanced and emergency staff could work unhindered. For more than an hour, ambulances struggled to ferry the wounded and the dead from the neighborhood while Lebanese troops and Hezbollah gunmen cordoned off the area, preventing anyone from getting close to the site of the two blasts, less than 50m apart. Hezbollah called on people to leave all coffee shops in the area, which are usually packed with customers, and urged residents to inform the group about any suspicious activities. Prime Minister Tammam Salam condemned the “cowardly criminal act,” urging the Lebanese to unite. UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag also denounced the “heinous attack,” stressing the need for those responsible to be brought to justice and saying that the international community was standing by Lebanon. The Islamic State group posted its claim of responsibility on social media pages linked to the Sunni militant group. Cruise ship search The US Coast Guard says it’s searching for a woman who fell from a cruise ship about 35km off the coast of Cuba. Coast Guard officials said the unidentified passenger fell from a deck of the Norwegian Pearl about 7pm yesterday. Officials say a Coast Guard cutter and a C-130 plane were responding to assist in the search. Norwegian Cruise Line said in an emailed statement that a female passenger was seen intentionally going overboard during a chartered cruise on the Pearl. Plea for leniency Attorneys for former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle asked a judge for leniency yesterday as he awaits sentencing on child pornography and sex-crime charges. The lawyers said Fogle “is profoundly sorry.” Fogle, a 38-year-old father of two, became a Subway spokesman after shedding more than 90kg as a university student, in part by eating the chain’s sandwiches. Subway ended its relationship with Fogle after authorities raided his suburban Indianapolis home in July. Fogle’s lawyers are asking for a five-year prison term at next week’s sentencing; Fogle has pleaded guilty to one count each of travelling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and distribution and receipt of child pornography. - AP

US airstrikes target ‘Jihadi John’ A US drone strike targeted a vehicle in Syria believed to be transporting the masked Islamic State militant known as “Jihadi John” yesterday, according to American officials. Whether the strike killed the British man who appears in several videos depicting the beheadings of Western hostages was not known, officials said. Mohammed Emwazi was the target of an airstrike in Raqqa, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in a statement. Officials were assessing the results of the strike, he said. A US official told The Associated Press that a drone had targeted a vehicle in which Emwazi was believed to be travelling. The official was not authorised to speak publicly and requested anonymity. Emwazi, believed to be in his mid-20s, has been described by a former hostage as a bloodthirsty psychopath who enjoyed threatening Western hostages. Spanish journalist Javier Espinosa, who had been held in Syria for more than six months after his abduction in September 2013, said Emwazi would explain precisely how the militants would carry out a beheading.

Emwazi was identified as “Jihadi John” last February, although a lawyer who once represented Emwazi’s father told reporters that there was no evidence supporting the accusation. Experts and others later confirmed the identification. Emwazi was born in Kuwait and spent part of his childhood in the poor Taima area of Jahra before moving to Britain while still a boy, according to news reports quoting Syrian activists who knew the family. He attended state schools in London, then studied computer science at the University of Westminster before leaving for Syria in 2013. The woman who had been the principal at London’s Quintin Kynaston Academy told the BBC earlier this year that Emwazi had been quiet and “reasonably hardworking.” Officials said Britain’s intelligence community had Emwazi on its list of potential terror suspects for years but was unable to prevent him from travelling to Syria. He had been known to the nation’s intelligence services since at least 2009, when he was connected with investigations into terrorism in Somalia. - AP

A quiet man with a huge heart It’s been 25 years since a big man with an equally large heart turned over his business and his own personal wealth to the people of Mid Canterbury. Nadine Porter finds out how a quiet man’s legacy has become the glue that holds our community together and why his gift impacts on us all.

t’s a wet afternoon and traffic is moving slowly, but it’s unclear what is causing a delay until the sound of the St John siren reaches everyone long before the yellow and green vehicle of mercy rushes past. While many St John branches struggle to raise funds to keep their service exemplary, the Ashburton branch was given an extraordinary gift back in 1990 when a hard-working farmer, turned truckie and then transport owner, discovered he had terminal cancer. An avid local rugby fan, Trevor Wilson very rarely missed a game at the A&P showgrounds. It was there he noticed St John cadets out in the rain and it was there that the genesis of an idea formed. He wanted to set up a trust, he told his close friends and advisors, and he wanted it to benefit St John and one other organisation – but which one? Not surprisingly Trevor first looked at building a muchneeded hospice, but eventually turned away from the idea when he realised a gifted building to the Canterbury District Health Board could be sold at any time, leaving the community with nothing. At the same time the Mid Canterbury farming community was experiencing a severe downturn on the back of high interest rates and government reforms. Many farmers were having to work off farm in order for them to survive. It was a sobering and difficult time and its impact was wide. Federated Farmers, in an attempt to offer support, hired – via the Rural Support Trust – a counsellor to help struggling farmers. Pat Withers initially operated out of Presbyterian Support’s Cameron Courts. Although not definitive, it

Trevor Wilson – a hard-working man. seems likely that the background of uncertainty among his former farming peers and seeing the impact Pat’s counselling had, led to Trevor naming Presbyterian Support as his other main beneficiary. Whatever the reason, he could never have known just how important that decision was, nor how many services Presbyterian Support would offer to clients today. It was in stark contrast to the quiet unassuming life Trevor himself lived. A farmer first and foremost, Trevor had his first off-farm foray into business via a combine harvesting contracting business with his brother Maurice. Bulk cartage was added to the mix as an extension of their business and, as clientele grew, Trevor decided to go it alone and formed Wilson Bulk Transport. Never one to show ostentatious wealth, he steadily accumulated properties and built up a highly successful transport company, having been quietly innovative, particularly in being one of the first in the area to cart containers for Mid Canterbury exporters. All that knew him spoke warmly of a man known to give personal loans to help many small businesses get on their feet and of a hard-working bloke who never spent any money on himself. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Trevor formed a trust with his friends and confidantes – Philip Wareing, Neil Thomas, John Welsh and Neil Sinclair in 1990 – before dying a year later. Selecting St John and Presbyterian Support as the main benefactors, Trevor quietly handed Mid Canterbury arguably one of

its greatest ever gifts. Today Presbyterian Support provides a wide-ranging service to the community, including Family Works Youth Services, social work and counselling support, parenting support, community social work, social workers in schools and heath promotion. Every year a substantial amount of money is gifted from the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust to help cover operational costs, including the 20 Presbyterian Support staff required to run current services. For Ashburton and West Coast regional manager Jackie Girvan, Trevor’s generosity – including the gift of the building they are in – was a once-in-alifetime gift. “It is amazing. We are the only branch in the upper South Island to have such a wonderful benefactor. There would be no-one locally who has matched his legacy. It’s the most remarkable thing.” St John Ashburton has had six ambulances funded by the trust and various operational and building costs. Ashburton area executive office Elaine Vallender describes Trevor as being selfless and said the trust’s support ensured their branch was the envy of the South Island. Today Wilson Bulk Transport continues to thrive and all profits derived are distributed to the trust and other community pro-

jects including the EA Networks Centre and the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Twenty-five years on, Trevor’s hard work and generosity continues to be linked to every part of Mid Canterbury. The man himself wouldn’t

enjoy the fuss being made about his contributions, but the success of the trust reminds us daily what an incredibly generous and selfless man he was – and we are all the better for it.

Post-natal depression affects a countless number of women but some, like Alice* don’t even know it. The Guardian’s Caitlin Porter sat down with Alice* earlier this week to discuss her postnatal struggles.

n 2008 Alice (* not her real name) was a high school teacher in Lincoln, a woman who lived an organised, independent and fulfilling life. Pregnant and still teaching, Alice experienced a very unexpected and early birth. At only 33 weeks daughter Alex* was born at Christchurch Women’s Hospital. “I was working the day before, and then I had her the day after,” she said. Spending weeks in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was tough for Alice and her husband Dave*. “I had no control … the first time I held my baby she was wired up – full of tubes.” When they finally discharged Alex, Alice and Dave returned to Ashburton but were not provided with any sort of follow-up care. A change in midwives partway through the pregnancy didn’t help matters either. “[Alex was] a reflux-y, screamy, pukey baby.” Alice and Dave tried to manage the best they could, working in two-hour shifts through the night, but it eventually got the better of them. “So that, that was my entry to motherhood,” Alice explained. The stand-in midwife tried her best to help the couple, but at times it was challenging. “I just didn’t cope, I had friends that sailed through that time and I thought I was useless.” Unaware of the signs and symptoms of depression, Alice put her negative mindset down to being tired. The battle went on until Alex was around eight months old. When people in Alice’s life brought up the notion of postnatal depression she said it “wasn’t even an option”. “Not with my belief, with my prejudice against depression.” It also didn’t help that an un-

named family member would remind her that “all babies cry” and she should “get over it”. Her negative state of mind continued and her friends with small children would ask to catch up but the answer was always “no”. “It was just too hard.” Her depression also began to impact on her marriage.

Dave was back at work living what Alice deemed a “normal life”, while she felt so far removed from her version of “normal”. “I resented him because ... he got to carry on,” she said. Dave would return home from work to be greeted by an upset and exhausted Alice. Finally Dave decided to do some

research and once again the topic of post-natal depression reared its ugly head. More open to it this time around the couple went to their GP and Alice was diagnosed with postnatal depression and given antidepressants. Following that Alice began to feel more like herself but was

still tired. For her, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) went hand in hand with her depression, following the trauma of such an early birth. Sometimes friends would tell her they had “forgotten” about Alex’s rough start in life, but Alice said it’s something that can never be forgotten.

happening and sought help. Now, she has made it her mission to spread the word about post-natal depression in an effort to dispel some of the stigma around it. Parenting with post-natal depression is much different than other people’s “normal-ish experience” and it can be hard to

Anthony Van Asperen is hoping for more success next year after speeding his way to the Athlete with a Disability Award at the Ao-

After adding the overall sportsman of the year gong to his expansive trophy collection a fortnight ago, Hugh Donaldson and twin brother George are continuing to make waves in the world of water skiing. As part of a water-skiingmad-family, the Ashburton College students first took to Lake Hood as six-year-olds, and have been neck-and-neck ever since. Hugh medalled at his first nationals in Piarere at eight years old with a tricks bronze, while George placed fourth. Hugh and George have also been New Zealand champion and runner-up skiers respectively in their age group for the past four years, and train extensively throughout the winter months in Australia and Florida. While in Florida, both Donaldsons broke the South Island boys’ tricks record, and still hold the second and third highest trick scores at New Zealand sub-junior and junior boys’ levels. In Perth, the duo took gold and bronze medals in the under-17 Asia-Oceania Championships. The twins then achieved personal bests at the Junior Worlds

in Peru last January and gold and silver medals at the nationals in Wanganui in April, and were also awarded the prestigious Silver Star Award. Despite the long list of honours, 15-year-old Hugh reflected modestly on his success in the sport that he has participated in for most of his young life. “I was pretty surprised, I didn’t really think I’d get it (the overall sportsman of the year award) because the other sports are more popular,” he said. “It was great the years of training it takes to reach this level was recognised.” Hugh said he aims to continue to improve, and he also has hopes of earning a college scholarship in the United States through his water skiing, before taking on the world’s finest. “I like learning new stuff, I want to go professional and compete around the world,” he said. The duo are now putting in the hours for the next Oz-Kiwi Championships in February and the Asia-Oceania Champs at Lake Kereta, Northland, where they’ll hope to pick up more silverware, and if their record is anything to go by, not many would be betting against them.

Warner’s ton sets up huge Australian total By roB ForsAith Centurion David Warner dictated terms and broke all manner of records as Australia raced to 1-243 at tea on day one of the second Test against New Zealand. Warner was unbeaten on 129 at the end of yesterday’s second session at the WACA, having become the first player to score three Test tons at the venue. He also celebrated a fourth consecutive ton against NZ, having posted one in each innings in Brisbane. Only one other opener has hit three Test tons on the trot, Sunil Gavaskar. The hosts’ run rate is an incredible 4.58, the tourists having only managed 53 overs in searing heat.

There was a sense of groundhog day about the way Warner took control after Steve Smith won the toss. The script has been remarkably similar to the first Test at the Gabba, where Australia had cruised to a 208-run win. Warner again powered Australia past 0-100 with Joe Burns, who fell for 40 in the morning session. The pugnacious opener looks to be in the middle of another productive partnership with Usman Khawaja, who has been just as potent but a bit more lucky in his unbeaten knock of 69. The main difference has been the Decision Review System (DRS) frustrating NZ as much as Warner and Khawaja. Brendon McCullum wasted the

side’s first review on a lbw shout in the 13th over, replays confirming a clear inside edge. McCullum gambled on the second, when Warner was on 78 and struck on the pads by Trent Boult in the 29th over. Ball-tracking technology suggested the ball was clipping the top of middle stump, but only enough of it to deliver a verdict of ‘umpire’s call’. With no reviews remaining, the Black Caps were at risk of further misery. Sure enough, Khawaja was given not out on 36 when he feathered an edge to keeper BJ Watling. Khawaja also had a slice of luck on 23, when Watling fumbled what looked to be another chance created by spinner Mark Craig.

Another reprieve came on 62 in the final over of the second session, Doug Bracewell too far off the rope and unable to reel in what could have been a regulation catch. Khawaja, recalled for the threematch series after more than two years in the Test wilderness, failed to let any of it fluster him. The first drop was typically textbook, although he reaped three boundaries by slog-sweeping Craig. Warner dispatched his first two deliveries to the fence. For all the pre-match talk of intimidatory bowling from both sides, Warner made a statement of his own with the willow. Neil Harvey, the last surviving member of the legendary 1948 Invincibles, hopes the inaugural day-night pink ball Test will be embraced as he feels it could be the future of Australian cricket. Now 87, the left-handed batting great, who rarely gets to watch Test cricket live outside Sydney, will be in Adelaide later this month for the historic match. Coming from an era when different coloured balls and abbreviated formats were unheard of, one might expect Harvey to be critical of such a drastic change but that’s not the case. “I am a traditionalist but I’m also for progress and it is progress,” Harvey told AAP. “If it goes in the right direction, I’m all for it. “It’s all brand new and I just hope the public embrace it and they go and watch it. “i just hope the pink ball is a great success because if it is, it will be the future of Australian cricket.” He’s not such a big fan of Twenty20, the major innovation of the past decade. “People said I’d be good at it, maybe I would, maybe I wouldn’t, it’s hard to know,” Harvey said. “But it’s an odd game. “It’s a hit or miss game isn’t it? It’s all over in a short period of time. “It gets a new audience which is probably a good thing but I’m pleased I didn’t have to play it.” Experience means he remains optimistic about the current Test team despite the rash of recent retirements. “I was the chairman of selectors when the (Kerry) Packer (World Series cricket) split occurred (in the 1970s),” Harvey said. “In that one season we found about five Test players straight away, so it didn’t take us long and this will be no different.” - AAP

Cairns ‘disrespected the game’ Hunt set Honest cricket players walk when they know they’re out, but Chris Cairns showed an “arrogance beyond belief” to take legal action when accused of match-fixing, a court has heard. The 45-year-old took a “dishonest” libel case against Lalit Modi, which he won in 2012, but in the course of victory committed perjury and perverted the course of justice, said Crown prosecutor Sasha Wass QC. She had already compared Cairns to disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, who maintained his innocence but was later stripped of seven Tour de France titles, for bringing shame on their sports. In her closing speech to the jury at the Southwark Crown Court, Ms Wass said one of the top cricketers in the world had been sitting opposite them for the past six weeks. Cricket was known for fair play, said the Queen’s Counsel, but Cairns had made a “mockery” of the game by cheating and encouraging others to cheat. “The top players don’t cheat, it’s not cricket. “He has made a mockery of the game of cricket, disrespected fans worldwide and disrespected the game.” The prosecutor said the legal fraternity also prided itself by playing by the rules and Andrew Fitch-Holland, jointly charged with perverting the course of justice, had also disrespected his profession. His explanation of a Skype call with Lou Vincent, in which he tries to persuade the cricketer to support Cairns libel case, was an “insult to your intelligence,” Ms Wass said. Fitch-Holland made three “blunders” which showed he knew Cairns was involved in match-fixing and therefore he was asking Vincent to provide a false statement, said the prosecutor. When Modi tweeted that Cairns was removed from the Indian Premier League auction for his “past record” of fixing, Fitch-Holland quoted Cairns as saying” “Modi’s f***ed me, I’m gone, I’m done.”

PHOTO ODT Those were not the words of an innocent man unfairly wronged, said Mr Wass, but one who believed the “I’ve been caught”. The second “blunder”, according to the Crown, was Fitch-Holland asking Cairns if there was a “smoking gun” such as a recording of him receiving money. That was not questioning whether Cairns was guilty, said Ms Wass, but if anyone could prove it. Thirdly, Fitch-Holland warned Cairns about two other libel cases including Lord Jeffrey Archer who was found guilty of perjury during the libel hearing and served two years in prison. “Why would he warn Chris Cairns, unless he knew the allega-

tions by Mr Modi ... were correct?” Ms Wass said the “wall of evidence” of match-fixing was overwhelming. This included “bricks” of direct evidence from witnesses such as Lou Vincent, Brendon McCullum and Ellie Riley, but also indirect evidence who corroborated key parts of their accounts. These witnesses - Leanne McGoldrick, Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, Steve Pearson, Phil Hayes and Ricky Ponting - provided “unanswerable” evidence that the others were not making false allegations, said Ms Wass. The Crown prosecutor said Adams told the jury about a conversation where Cairns was “openly

boasting” that nobody would be able to prove match-fixing in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League. Ellie Riley also said Cairns was “very confident” of not being caught and Lou Vincent told her that Cairns was dismissed from the ICL for match-fixing, although the public reason given was an undisclosed ankle injury, said Ms Wass. This matched up with the evidence of Andrew Hall, another player at the Chandigarh Lions, who said Cairns told him he was sacked for match-fixing allegations but not to believe the rumours. Another player Dinesh Mongia, whom Lou Vincent alleged was involved in match-fixing, was also dismissed the same night in October 2008. Cairns was also on a list of 11 “tainted” ICL players thought to be involved in unethical conduct, with his name beside the words “arranged match-fixing”. The Crown prosecutor also pointed to payments of $US250,000 from a diamond trader - with no contract - and Cairns had large sums of cash, once repaying 9000 pounds to Daniel Vettori in 20 pound notes. When Ms Wass questioned Cairns about the Vettori payment, he said he was often paid large amounts of cash for appearing at functions or speaking engagements. He admitted he did not bank the money in order to avoid paying tax. “We suggest it was dirty money, criminal money. Chris Cairns says it was legitimate but ‘I was fiddling my tax’,”said Ms Wass. “Either way, it doesn’t show him in attractive light.” She said the evidence against Cairns was “overwhelming.” “We suggest both the defendants should be ashamed of themselves, and both are guilty of the both counts in the indictment”. The Queen’s Counsel representing Cairns and Fitch-Holland will present their final arguments to the jury next week. - NZME

The top-ranked tourists crashed to a 108-run defeat inside three days in the low-scoring first Test in Mohali, unable to play India’s spinners on the dry, dusty pitch. De Villiers said his focus was not on his landmark Test at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, but on performing to the best of his ability. “I don’t feel any pressure because it is my 100th game,” the 31-year-old said. “I feel pressure

because we are 1-0 down. The score needs to be settled. After Mark Hunt and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva battled to an epic draw over five rounds in the main event of UFC Fight Night 33 in Brisbane in December, 2013, many were in awe that the fight went the distance. Both men were knocked down and suffered through 25 minutes of action in a bout that is widely accepted as one of the greatest heavyweight fights the UFC has seen. But Silva (19-7-1) tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone after the scrap, which took the gloss off the spectacle and nearly two years on, the two will meet again at UFC 193 in Melbourne tomorrow. Hunt (10-10-1) can be cryptic when he speaks but when it comes to his attitude in the octagon, he keeps things simple. “I know the gameplan; I’ve always said it’s the same gameplan, which is to go and knock his face off and that’s about it. It’s the easiest gameplan anyone could have,” Hunt said. The Super Samoan did his training camp in the heat of Thailand - generally he prepares in Auckland - but the opportunity to work at the AKA camp proved too good to turn down where he trained with the recently-retired Soa Palelei. “It’s good for losing weight,” Hunt said of the Thai weather. The scale has often proved as dangerous of an opponent as the behemoths Hunt has met in the cage during the past few years. A botched weight cut left him with little in the tank when he met American Stipe Miocic (13-2) at UFC Fight Night 65 in Adelaide in May where he suffered a fifthround TKO loss. “It wasn’t a competition last time. “It was just me getting beat up so that’s not going to happen again,” the Kiwi said. He recently finished his training camp weighing around 124kg, leaving a small amount to drop to squeeze under the 120.6kg non-title limit for heavyweights. In the past, Hunt has often entered the week of a fight needing to shed 10-12kg. Hard yards for the hopefuls BY ELI ORZESSEK Forget the Rugby World Cup Sonny Bill Williams and Liam Messam can expect some really hard work as they train to join the All Blacks Sevens for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. New Zealand coach Sir Gordon Tietjens shed some light on his plans for the pair in advance of this weekend’s Oceania Sevens tournament at Trusts Arena in Auckland. “They’ll work probably harder than they’ve worked before because that’s part of our game, part of our conditioning,” he said. “We’ve talked to them and they’ve been talking to my conditioning trainer as well, and obviously if they’re looking to be good at our game they’ve got to be training it and playing it.” Both players will take part in five or six tournaments next year, including the Sevens World Series, as part of their integration into the squad. Messam has gone to Japan to begin sevens training programmes already and Williams is expected to join the training camps in January and February. With the All Blacks Sevens side having already qualified for Rio, Tietjens will be using this weekend’s tournament to finalise his squad for the 2015/16 season. The first tournament of the World Series kicks off in Dubai early next month. The New Zealand development side, made up of core All

Black Sevens players along with some promising youngsters, will play training matches against Auckland. “I’m playing a lot of younger players who are vying for positions to be a contracted sevens player,” he said. “There’ll be a couple of the senior players playing with them but they’ll be all the new young guys playing against Auckland.” However, Tietjens said he would also be casting his eye on the Auckland side for potential talent. “It’s fair to say if anyone in the Auckland team stands out as well, then they’ll become a contender as well,” he said. “I’m always actively looking for new players.” The two-day event is also a critical Olympic qualifying tournament, with the winners from the men’s and women’s draws securing their places for Rio next year. The teams who finish second and third will have a second chance to book places for Rio. They will gain automatic entry to the World Rugby final Olympic qualifying tournament, expected to be played in June 2016. The countries participating in the men’s tournament are Australia, Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, America Samoa, Nauru and Solomon Islands. Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and Tonga will compete in the women’s tournament. - NZME

The Brumbies have scored a major coup signing Argentina’s World Cup halfback Tomas Cubelli on a two-year Super Rugby deal. Cubelli has 45 test caps for Los Pumas and was a key member of their impressive run to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals. He will be an ideal replacement for Wallabies halfback Nic White, who has left the Brumbies to play in France. Brumbies CEO Michael Jones said Cubelli opted for the Canberra-based side over the new Argentinian Super Rugby side which will boast 21 of their RWC semifinal squad. - AAP

While Richie needs no further accolading at all, his counterpart in the bat, ball and wickets game continues to score points, as well as runs. Brendon McCullum made a name for himself early in his career as a fearless warrior, standing up to the medium pacers in his wicketkeeping role, which might not sound like much, until you try it. He’s simply carried on right through his time as captain of various sides, and while occasionally he might make a few dyed-in-the-wool purists faint with his rapid-fire field changes and shot selection choices, overall he’s proved an inspiration, and not just to New Zealand sides. A top England administrator freely admitted that McCullum’s modus operandi was the reason for that country’s revival on the pitch, particularly in the selection area which meant players

if there’s an overly influential outfit winning everything. That theory went out the window yesterday, with the blue and white stars runners again going out hot favourites - but this time they were beaten. Often, and comprehensively. It just goes to show the fickle nature of the game, and means that there’s renewed interest in upcoming meetings throughout the country, knowing that the might of Purdon power can be toppled. Another highlight, this time for TV viewers: Horsecam. Or whatever they’ve called it. Just brilliant, a camera perched on the driver’s helmet gives you a magnificent view of what’s happening out there, how the races are developing, and just how fast

they’re going, and how close to other horses they are racing. Just another improvement for the punter at home, and a very, very good one. Lastly, a tale of hardship from some local lads on course on Cup Day. They were enjoying their day on the inside of the course, possibly imbibing one or two Fantas in the hospitality tents, when the Painted Ladies did their tour of duty across the track. All very well, but there was a race imminent, and the gate was closed, forcing these poor souls to endure a whole race and more in very, very close proximity to the bedaubed models. Our heroes struggled manfully through the ordeal, but when questioned afterwards none could recollect which horse won the race. Or got second or third. Or in fact anything about the thundering contest of horsepower going on just metres away from them. It truly is tough being a punter sometimes.

Folau out injured Wallabies fullback Israel Folau should recover in time from ankle surgery to play in the NSW Waratahs’ Super Rugby season-opener against Queensland on February 27. The Australian Rugby Union confirmed yesterday the star fullback would go under the knife, after he struggled through the World Cup after injuring his ankle against England. Folau, who missed his first ever game through injury for the Wallabies against Scotland in the quarter-final, still amassed 366 metres in the tournament, more than any other Australian player. Regardless of whether he returns in Round 1 for the Waratahs, the surgery will still come at a price given the dual-international will now miss a lucrative stint in Japanese rugby. - AAP

Top start key for All Whites All Whites’ captain Chris Wood says his side took full advantage of a rapid-fire first few minutes to earn victory over Oman yesterday at the Al Seeb Stadium in Muscat. The All Whites went ahead in just the fifth minute before professionally going on with the job to secure their first win since a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in September of 2013. Wood, who scored his 14th goal in his 39th All Whites appearance, said the early lead was vital. “We started off very well and it was nice to come out of the blocks firing quickly,” Wood said. “We had a few opportunities down the left and Henry was looking very sharp which was really good. “We got the ball in behind and

it was nice to get off to a flying start with a quick goal which I’m sure gave all the boys confidence and we kicked on from that.” The Leeds United striker said after going ahead it was pleasing that his side were able to cope with what was thrown at them by a team unbeaten in five 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers this year. “The Oman side did cause us problems, especially in the first 20 minutes when they started creating chances down the left, but we adapted well and the defence did brilliantly.” Wood, himself just 23 years of age, said the squad’s growing pool of young talent made their mark in a performance which shows promise for the important year ahead.

The sight of hundreds of Wellingtonians topless might not have been what the Football Federation Australia meant when they said they wanted to see more from the Phoenix but it was priceless for the embattled club. Air NZ: Direct flights to Vietnam

Equity markets experienced a correction over the quarter. However, despite this correction global equities have provided double-digit 12-month returns, in New Zealand dollar (NZD) terms. The NZD depreciation also had a moderating effect on international equity market declines over the quarter. The Hong Kong equity market led the weakness, impacted by both a decline in the Chinese equity market, as well as lower mainland China growth rates. The German equity market suffered with the key automotive industry impacted by the software scandal surrounding Volkswagen’s diesel emissions.

Australian and NZ equity markets Australian equities were another poor performer.

Declines were led by the banking and resource sectors, with banks raising equity during the period and the market factoring in likely changes to regulatory capital requirements. These capital raisings were expected and after the market has digested these, the banking sector could well get re-rated higher. The resource sector was impacted by weak commodity prices, although in Australian dollars commodity prices have been more stable. Companies with defensive characteristics, or offering structural growth prospects, performed the best. New Zealand equities were down over the last quarter, but resilient relative to offshore markets. This is a reflection of the defensive make-up of the market,

Air New Zealand has confirmed it will fly to Vietnam three times a week from next winter. The airline will launch seasonal services to the country next June, catering to outbound Kiwi holiday-makers. Vietnam is growing in popularity as a holiday destination with the number of New Zealanders with more than 15,000 travelling there in the past year. Air New Zealand’s chief strategy, networks and alliance officer, Stephen Jones, said the airline would fly to Ho Chi Minh City in the south of the country from June to October. It will use its 767-300 aircraft and the flight time will be about 11 hours. The service will run from June to October with the possibility of extending the season in subsequent years. “We’ll offer a direct hassle-free service,” said Jones. Air New Zealand is also about to start new direct services to Buenos Aires in Argentina and Houston in the United States before Christmas and is scoping another long-haul route in addition to Vietnam which it will announce soon. Amendments to an air services

agreement with New Zealand signed earlier this year allowed for enhanced services. Flight Centre general manager of product Sean Berenson said Asia was a real growth area for New Zealand travel. “South East Asia in particular has long been popular with Kiwis and there would certainly be the demand to expand on the offering in this space.” House of Travel commercial director Brent Thomas said he was expecting the new flight route to be more skewed towards Kiwis travelling to Vietnam, as opposed to tourists entering New Zealand. “Unlike parts of Australia such as Sydney and Melbourne, in New Zealand we don’t have a large Vietnamese population. From our perspective, the new flight route from Air New Zealand isn’t targeting those wanting to visit friends and family or travel for business purposes – it’s a response to Vietnam’s surge in popularity for Kiwi holidays,” he said. “This is supported by the fact that the new route is a seasonal service. Tread cautiously when hocking off the silver

he current trend in local government circles seems to be that assets should be sold to fund big ticket projects. Christchurch City is going through the process of assessing what it has and how much cash could be generated by selling some assets and Auckland City is doing the same. They’re both looking at hocking off assets that were bought for good reason in the past but which today may be better turned into cash. Selling off the silver, however, comes with one very large downside. When it’s gone, it’s gone. Local authorities use money generated from their multiple assets to fund new projects and as a hedge against the day when a need arises that can’t be funded out of interest, internal or external borrowings. Over the years the Ashburton District Council has sold investments such as its shares in the Lyttleton Port Company and it’s sold off forestry assets, but it’s also held onto a vast amount of property from which it continues to earn an income. It’s appropriate that any local authority from time to time undertakes a stocktake of its holdings and measures their worth as an asset against their value as cash in the hand. Councils walk a fine line when it comes to funding growth. The obvious one is to pump up rates and most do that judiciously. Rate rises are a fact of life and a modest increase each year as just the price that has to be paid for living in a progressive district. Deciding when to hold and when to sell is a game of poker all councils play. Ours is currently looking at all of its Glasgow lease properties, assessing their worth as an asset against the value of cash in hand if they were freeholded. It would be great to see our council’s total asset register with annual income generated, current value and a projection of its worth on the open market. We don’t want to sell off assets accumulated over decades, but as ratepayers we want to make sure we’re getting the best value for money for assets that essentially belong to all ratepayers.

ew Zealand is routinely cut off the right-hand edge of maps of the world, cast adrift in the space outside the frame that is usually home to the Antarctica, occasionally Tasmania, and not much else. Sure, it irks, but it’s not only illustrators in faraway countries that make such erasures. To see why, we need only look a little closer to home. Ask the average New Zealander on the street how many islands New Zealand is made up of and they’re likely to say two – North and South. Press a little further, and Stewart Island might just nudge in as the third, depending on how much attention the person paid to school geography lessons, and whether or not they have ever actually travelled south of the Bombay Hills. And

yet, there is so much more to our shores than just the big three (or big two-and-a-half – sorry Rakiura). Take the Chatham Islands, for instance. Marooned 800km to the east of mainland New Zealand, they are mostly spared a thought only at the end of the national weather forecast (and, of course, the forecast is almost invariably for rain). They may be in their own time zone 45 minutes ahead of the rest of us, but they support the

All Blacks just as fervently. Then there are the many sub-Antarctic islands to the south that are home to a host of Southern Ocean wildlife and not much else. Still, their frigid peaks and windswept shores belong on our maps, even if they do account for less than 1 per cent of New Zealand’s total area and most commonly appear as obstacles on maritime charts. Many Mid Cantabrians are familiar with maps of another sort, namely the topographical variety that are routinely packed for hunting and hiking trips up into the hills. That’s another side of the country that is often overlooked – quite literally, in the case of international travellers flying out of Christchurch.

The deep valleys and towering peaks, the glacier faces and steep slopes of scree all gather neatly to order beneath the orange lines and ordered type of a Mercator Projection rendering. For those who make the effort, it’s something pretty special. Human experiences, narratives and histories are what make a place, but our selective cropping also makes certain places invisible. Next time you’re considering an overseas holiday because you’ve “seen it all” back home, it might pay to think twice. That, and buy a more detailed map.
