No more pain in the butt

Martin Nordqvist is among those in the Methven community that were never sure where the old chairs in the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall came from, but are glad they have finally have been replaced.

It depends on who you talk to as to as to where the old seating had come from.

Some say the old seating came from the old Ashburton cinema, while it’s also rumoured that the they came from the old Christchurch Town Hall after they put in new seating in decades ago.

No matter where they had come from, the seats never really fitted the space, Nordqvist said.

With seat aisles all over the place it was obvious that the seats weren’t designed for that space and Nordqvist can attest to them not being comfortable.

So they had to go.

The upgrading of the seats and renovating the floor of the mezzanine had been in the hall committee’s plans for a while.

“It’s just something that has been needing an upgrade for a while, but at the appropriate time,” he said.

The cost of the $60,000 for

the chairs was funded through a series of grants and donations alongside help from the Ashburton District Council which has overall control of the hall.

A generous donation from Elma Lochhead on behalf of Allan Lochhead a couple of years ago, was set aside for the upgrading of the seats when the full amount of funds were available.

The seats were also funded by Ashburton District Council infrastructure grants, the Provincial Growth Fund, and the Lion Foundation.

The property department of the council took care of the floor which had remained untouched since 1956.

“They let us know they would take care of it, they came in and sanded it and polyurethaned the floor and now it looks great with the newly done up floor and the new chairs. It looks like new up here,” Nordqvist said.

The hall is a multi-functional space used as the Methven Civil Defence centre in emergencies, various weddings, is frequently used by the Methven theatre group and most recently hosted the Methven Rugby Club’s 125th jubilee celebrations, Nordqvist said.

After a national community

“He said his town of a similar size has a small wooden building as their memorial hall, and this

one is very state of the art for the size of the town, and Methven is really lucky to have a facility like this,” Nordqvist said.

From rescue to being rehomed

Sometimes enough is enough.

That is how Fiona Kingsbury felt when see took to Facebook to give some kitten dumpers a serve.

Kingsbury created a post earlier this month to inform the community that kitten dumping isn’t a way forward and wasn’t an acceptable option.

“For the people that dump kittens on roadsides. Do you realise we have a bunch of people who will take them if you just tell someone you can’t look after them?,” she said in the post.

“If they’re not hit by cars or caught by hawks, dogs, or wild cats, they will die from starvation or exposure because they don’t know how to

hide or keep warm.

“Maybe if they are really lucky some amazing person like my neighbour will see them and stop.

And maybe manage to catch them all, but we never know how many were dumped.”

The worst part is, it is so easy to re-home kittens Finding two abandoned kittens being dumped and that were not yet old enough to be away from their mother prompted Kingsbury’s post.

The ridiculous thing about it, Kingsbury said, was that within 12 hours of finding the dumped kittens they had both found new homes.

“I’m not the rescue person, it’s the people who see a bag or box on the side of the road and go to investigate.

“It’s those people who take the time to stop and look that are the rescuers,” she said.

Caring for dumped and abandoned animals out of her own pocket, she rehabs the animals and pays for any medical bills until they are ready to be rehomed.

“The worst part is, it is so easy to re-home kittens, you flick a post of the kitten up on Facebook and it’s only a matter of hours before they have a new home to go to,” she said.

Bridge burdens dominate on Ashburton LTP hearings

There is no end to Ashburton resident objections to the second urban bridge.

The long-standing issue, as expected, dominated this week’s public hearings on the Ashburton District Council’s draft longterm plan.

Dozens of speakers presented in chambers between Tuesday and Wednesday to council on its proposed 10-year plan for the district after a total of 430 public submissions were received – more than double the total received for the corresponding pe-

riod three years’ prior.

A total of 65 submitters, spanning former mayors, current community leaders and ordinary residents, signalled their intention to present to council.

About a third of those who presented in person made mention of the long-delayed bridge project, with the proposed location of Chalmers Avenue continuing to be a sore point among many in the community.

Many concerns around the proposed location centre around the bridge running through a largely residential area, public safety and heavy vehicle driving routes.

The floundering venture,

which is reportedly earmarked for 2026 by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), had now become a matter of significant urgency according to rural leaders.

Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury president David Clark said the “Auckland-styled traffic jams” being experienced in the district made the project a high priority during his presentation.

“Even if you were to all push the big green go button on a second bridge today, my bet is that it would be 10 years before we can drive across that bridge,” he said.

“Having freight trucks spending half an hour getting through

Ashburton just adds to the cost of moving this district’s product.”

The council has presented a strategic business case to NZTA with detailed design earmarked for 2024-2025.

About half of the estimated $37 million bridge project is supposedly to be funded by NZTA, alongside a 20 per cent portion funded by council and another backer still to be found for the remaining 30 per cent.

Former Ashburton mayor Donna Favel was one of several submitters who opposed the proposed location of Chalmers Avenue for the second bridge.

“I’ve heard it said that if council was to go back to the drawing

board and start the process again it may add another 16 years to the process,” she said.

“My response is that I would prefer a 16-year delay now to assess the optimal location as opposed to a bridge in the wrong location.”

Arguments have been made for a ring road option or West Street along the State Highway for the second bridge.

Water meters, rates, elderly housing and the EA Networks Centre were also key issues amid long-term plan discussions.

Deliberations began soon after public submission presentations had wrapped up, with discussions to continue next week.

Canterbury councils taking on extra staff for surging consents

Surging numbers of new home consents has councils in the wider Canterbury region mobilising extra staff to cater for unprecedented demand.

Both the Selwyn and Ashburton district councils have secured extra staff to help aid the consenting process and the effects are being felt by builders in the regions, who are being forced to put jobs on hold.

Record numbers of consents are being experienced nationwide which has prompted concerns from the building industry around supply and staffing.

The Selwyn District Council has hired three new consent staff while the Ashburton District Council is taking on two new building officials later this month.

Both councils have raised issues with the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment as average consent times were now exceeding the 20-working day statutory timeframes.

Ashburton builder Sam Millar said waiting times for project greenlighting had virtually doubled.

“Six months ago, it was about 20 working days and now it’s closer to 40 working days,” he said.

The volume of consents being processed currently would also affect the amount of site inspections in the coming months.

“It’s going to go full circle,” Millar said.

are going to be busy three or four months from now.”

“We’ve been told it’s going to be a problem at the other end now.”

Ashburton District Council strategy and compliance group manager Jane Donaldson said while the prospect of new build

demands exceeding available land was an ongoing consideration, it was not a concern.

“There has certainly been greater interest in development than we have seen in the recent past,” she said.

A total of 17 new build con-

sents, valued at more than $7.1 million were issued in March in the Ashburton District.

The situation is significantly heightened further north as a record number of applications in the Selwyn District continue to flood in.

The Selwyn District Council confirmed a mammoth 372 building consent applications were received in March followed by another 264 in April.

“This huge number of consents, along with a national shortage of building consent officers has created a backlog for the Council in processing consents,” a council spokesperson said.

“Demand for inspections is also exceeding the number of inspectors currently available.”

It was revealed last week that council had met with industry professionals to launch a professional partnership programme to help expedite the consenting process.

“Professionals, such as designers, builders, developers or building companies, will be able to apply to become council’s partners if they meet the criteria,” a spokesperson said.

“Once they join the programme they will be able to have their consents fast-tracked as long as they meet, and continue to meet, certain criteria.”

Community comes together for planting

Every age and ability helped the Methven Lions plant over 1000 tussocks and grasses along the Methven walkway in just over an hour.

It was definitely a case of many hands make light work for the Methven Lions and their successful community planting event at the weekend.

Project lead Peter Garde was impressed by the number of people who turned up.

“It was twice the amount of people I was expecting, it would have been great to have only a small group of people there,” Garde said.

Their goal was to plant a thousand grasses over the course of the day. It was a goal that was to be easily obtainable when they arrived at the planting site to see over 100 people ready to go.

Young and old helped the Methven Lions with their community planting day where they manged to put around 1100 tussock grasses along Thyme Stream on Mt Harding Road.

The anticipated day of planting turned into just over an hour of work, with organisers lighting up the barbecue before lunchtime.

“It was a very successful day,” Garde said. The grasses were funded by grants from Environment Canterbury, Fonterra, and Mt Hutt.

There will be another community planting day run by the Methven Lions in the coming weeks, Garde said, with the details yet to be confirmed.

Champions for change

The workshop on Tuesday for Ashburton College students was designed to help teach them how to petition for change, talk to regional councils and gain confidence in speaking up for a sustainable future. We’re still an M. bovis hotspot One new case, others cleared

Mid Canterbury remains a hotspot for mycoplasma bovis, with one new case identified in the district, while other remaining infected farms from the 2020 spring cluster are expected to be declared free of the cattle disease in coming weeks.

The new case is a beef property connected to the existing Canterbury cluster.

All nine remaining active confirmed properties are in Canterbury, seven in the Ashburton district and two in Selwyn district.

M. bovis programme director Stuart Anderson said that all of the seven remaining properties identified in spring 2020 have been fully depopulated with cleaning and disinfection expected to be completed by the end of May, and Restricted Place notices revoked in June.

“Being under movement restrictions isn’t easy and is a significant disruption to farmers, let alone finding you have M. bovis infected animals and having to work through eradication,” Anderson said.

“I’d like to acknowledge the hard work that those farmers affected by M. bovis are putting in, and the support communities and neighbours are providing to them.”

Mid Canterbury dairy heifers entering the milking herd for the first time this spring will also be a focus of an expanded national beef cattle surveillance project.

This will target 2019-born dairy heifers in Canterbury, Otago and Southland as it works to eradicate M. bovis from New Zealand.

Anderson said that in spring 2020, the programme saw the effect of untraceable young stock from 2018, in particular dairy heifers, entering the milking platform for the first time.

“We now have 2019-born heifers due to calve and come into lactation for the first time this winter.

“Where we can, intercepting infected dairy heifers before they mix on a milking platform and contribute calves to the population, will reduce the risk of possible spread within and between

M. bovis programme director Stuart Anderson more farms.

“To do this, we have expanded our national beef cattle surveillance over April and May to include testing 2019-born dairy heifers, with a rapid seasonal push to test a larger number of dairy heifer groups in areas where we have seen a higher prevalence of M. bovis – Canterbury, Otago and Southland.”

Timing of the depopulation of the Five Star Beef cattle feedlot in coastal Mid Canterbury had not been decided yet, but the Wakanui property will be one of the last, due to the risk of reinfection, Anderson said.

As a large operation sourcing cattle from around 400 farms, the property was at risk of being infected again, if infection remains in the farming community.

Before eradication can be achieved, the feedlot must be depopulated and cleared, and the Ministry for Primary Industries’ chief science adviser, Dr John Roche was working with international animal health and feedlot farming experts to determine the appropriate approach.

Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor said that following its infection with M. bovis, Five Star Beef had been useful to the programme as a way to test incoming animals from source properties.

The most recent inspection confirmed no evidence of boundary weaknesses between the feedlot and neighbouring farms, that could result in any cattle breakouts.

Current conditions include no live cattle movements off the feedlot other than to processing and no over the fence contact between cattle within and outside the boundaries of the Restricted Place.

Additional conditions for lower risk pathways off the site are in place.

These include animal products, personnel, clothing and protective gear, equipment, effluent and vehicles. As an extra

precaution, neighbouring farms with cattle are being tested at sixmonth intervals.

M. bovis was first detected in New Zealand in July 2017, after cattle in a South Canterbury dairy herd began displaying symptoms of a novel disease.

Since then, 171,202 cattle have been culled and $200 million paid in compensation to farmers in a national bid to eradicate the disease. Nationally, 254 farms have been cleared of the disease.

Words are just wind

A chance to have your say.

The thing is it seems to be not many take that opportunity.

They are quite happy to spout an opinion, but not through the right channels.

The Ashburton District Council’s draft Long-Term Plan went out for submissions recently.

It’s a document that maps out the major spending for the next decade.

It’s a big deal for the community’s future.

It rolls around every three years and had over double the public response this year, from 204 to 430 submissions.

But in a district with 15,716 rateable units it equates to just a 2.7 per cent submission rate from those properties, or just 1.2 per cent of the entire district’s population of some 35,000.

For something so major, that’s a minimal response.

From a statistical standpoint, it suggests the silent majority is happy with the decision-making of the council.

To the point where they haven’t felt the need to voice their opinion.

However, the conversations in the street, the pub, back alleys and online would suggest otherwise.

People felt strongly about many of the decisions.

Everyone had their two cents worth as to what the council should or shouldn’t be doing.

But words are just wind, it is the power of the pen that can cause change.

Without adding those two cents, ratepayers are facing the council’s proposed 4.3 per cent rates hike.

That two cents could have helped bring that figure down, saving them dollars.

And that’s avoiding the elephant in the room – Environment Canterbury’s impending 18 to 24 per cent average rates hike in a long-term plan that received 1291 submissions – out of a population of 645,900 – or 0.2 per cent of the population.

Unfortunately, many will now have to grin and bear the decisions that stem from the long-term plan deliberations, on both the local and regional council level.

The only upside is that after the first year, nothing is actually set in stone.

It can all be charged when the annual plan process kicks off around the same time next year.

If it is deemed by many that the council got its decisions wrong this time around, will there be more than 430 submissions next year.

Will the silent majority speak up, or continue to mumble in the background?

Date day downward spiral I

must admit I have been a bit slack on the ‘Date Day’ romance front of late.

It has gone from a full of activities after a nice lunch out, to a get jobs done day.

Doing the grocery shopping together is kind of romantic isn’t it?

I’m not sure if I stepped things up or down last week.

I was asked to be the guest speaker at the MSA Garden Club AGM. Yes, it clashed with Date Day, but I thought hang on a second, I could incorporate that into date day.

So, I took Manda along to watch. She said she enjoyed watching me talk and we got a plate full of afternoon tea goodies to take away. I’m going to take that as a win.

Now although I do quite like putting in a vege garden each year, or should I say I like eating from my vege garden each year, I am far from an authority on gardening. So, my chat was all about growing up in Ashburton and then the road I travelled that led to my job in radio today.

When I sit here and reflect on that journey, I must admit that a lot of it was being at the right place at the right time.

A prime example of that was when I was working as a trainee manager in a supermarket in Christchurch, a job I hated, but it meant I was living in Christchurch and away from home. Unlike a lot of young folks today, I couldn’t wait to get away from home.

my mother knew, and she had a part-time, Amway type business.

One of her clients would be my next boss.

I was in the right place at the right time and him and I got chatting. I must have let slip, how much I disliked my job at the time, and he said he was looking for a storeman. His firm did the catering for Ansett Airlines. It sounded pretty cool to me and was a nice rise in pay.

That storeman job led to me getting my HT driver’s licence and a bump up the ladder to a ground steward job with the same company. We drove the trucks to the airport and loaded and unloaded the catering on the planes.

This was an awesome job for a young fella like me, working with a team of older blokes (typical truck drivers) taught me quickly about respecting others. The first and only threat to “knock me into next week” if I did it again showed me where the boundaries were set.

I got on great with all the fellas and when I look back now, I realise most of them were ‘looking out’ for the young buck from Ashburton.

I quickly got used to shift work and it was well paid. This allowed me to buy my first house

A younger Phill Hooper even tried his hand at truck driving, an awesome job that taught him quickly about respecting others. when I was 21. That in turn led me to having enough ‘moola’ to travel around Europe for a couple of years.

If working with those blokes taught me about respect, then travelling on my own taught me about resilience and that ‘home’

wasn’t that bad a place after all.

That’s a story for another day, I must away and do some planning for next week’s date day.

Unisexual, not metrosexual bus terminal I

t’s taken all my literary skills to describe the Ashburton bus terminal to family members overseas.

They’ve experienced Waterloo and Paddington Stations in London, flown into New York and, more recently, changed trains at the Central Railway Station, Sydney.

Now their ultimate experience as jetsetters was the transit station on Walnut Avenue.

I had to describe it to our daughter who, direct from Australia, was catching the InterCity from Ashburton to Dunedin with her mother.

I said it was brutally minimalist, but still reflected the boutique beauty of Ashburton. Possibly the architect who designed the Sydney Opera House was called in to advise.

It was the window on Walnut.

Now, that interested her, coming from New South Wales so she asked a few more questions.

No, I said, there was no Koru Lounge, but it had other attractive features. It was palatial. If you didn’t spread out there was just room for three if you avoided social distancing.

No, they didn’t provide masks, but

there might be one in the rubbish bin behind the terminal.

The bin was very handy and was one of those add-on features. Just avoid the doggie pooper scooper.

She asked if it had air conditioning?

I thought for a moment and said it had air and, on a brisk winter’s morning, you got all the conditioning you needed.

Being organised and computer savvy, she’d tried to confirm a seat at the terminal but she couldn’t find the call centre that took the bookings. I said the district council was very busy changing their branding.

I explained it was probably unique in the southern hemisphere because it was totally unisex with no office extensions for break-out sessions for men and women but, on a busy day,

there was another wing attached to the terminal. It’s called a stand-alone seat about five metres away, to the left.

If the demand increased, the ADC could extend it to two seats.

She seemed satisfied but, because of frosts and occasional snow, she asked if there was under floor heating?

No, I said, but, if it gets too crowded, it could run to under floor seating. That would mean elevating the bench like in a sauna and installing another one below.

But the district council doesn’t want people to leave. If one of its new slogans is Ashburton: Stay And Play, it might limit departure to two people a day. The bus terminal would be ideal.

Finally she asked if there was an official opening with cheese rolls and custard squares. That’s important and very nostalgic to Kiwis living in Australia. I didn’t know but thought the Prime Minister would’ve cut the ribbon after announcing the $60 million new college up the road.

She’d then sit on the seat and catch the bus back to Christchurch. That’s Brutal and beautiful bus terminal. all the posterity we’d need.

A pawsome effort by Jock

Jock the adventurous west highland terrier is back at it again.

Christine Taylor has recently published her third children’s book, and the second based off her cheeky west highland terrier Jock and his life on the farm.

In the latest book, Jock again shows readers what his day in the life on the farm looks like through the different seasons.

“It is so important that not just our younger generation, but for everyone to learn and understand about how our farmers are feeding the world,’’ said Taylor, a Mid Canterbury grandmother and farmer.

“Writing children’s farming story books is a fun timeout and a hobby for me.

In the course of the event, the wraps were also whipped off the 812 Competizione A, a spectacular Targa-top version, again a limited-series and an homage to the Prancing Horse’s glorious open-top tradition.

The presentation took place in a very special venue, the recently-opened GT Sporting Activities Department located alongside the Fiorano track, further strengthening the inextricable link between Maranello’s road-going sports cars and the peerless racing DNA developed as a result of over seven decades of success on the world’s circuits.

This duo of cars is dedicated to a very exclusive group of collectors and enthusiasts of the most noble of Ferrari traditions, which focuses on uncompromising maximum performance.

The innovative technological concepts applied to the engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics have raised the bar to new heights.

The 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A sport the most exhilarating V12 on the automotive scene and is derived from the multi-award-winning engine powering the 812 Superfast. The result is a naturally-aspirated 830 cv engine that pairs impressive power with electrifying delivery and the inimitable soundtrack that Ferrari V12 purists know well.

To boost the output of the engine, which has the same 6.5-litre displacement as the 812 Superfast’s V12, several areas

have been significantly re-engineered to achieve a new record red line while optimising the fluid-dynamics of the intake system and combustion, and reducing internal friction.

t’s Monday.

Last weekend is all over, but gosh what a great weekend it was.

We celebrated mothers, we celebrated sports people, we continued to celebrate all things wheelie as Wheels Week rolled on, and around 300 people celebrated our wonderful local educational facility – Ashburton College.

Organised by the Ashburton College Alumni, the First 10 Years reunion was simply brilliant.

Like all reunions it provided an opportunity to catch up, mix and mingle, renew friendships and recall school days.

But it wasn’t just about looking back; those attending found out about the exciting future which lies ahead for Ashburton College.

The school is now 56 years old, and there have been reunions in the past.

For some of us, the first reunion occurred on February 2, 1965, which was the day Ashburton College opened.

Now that may sound funny.

But prior to that, when many of us completed our primary schooling at the end of our Standard 6 or whatever year that’s now called, our classmates went in different directions – some to Hakatere College, some to Ashburton High School.

Our third forms were then divided among classes, and some ended up in a class without any of their old school mates.

That wasn’t at all bad, in fact it was a good thing, as many new friendships were formed, and because many of us stayed in touch with primary school friends our social circle grew.

Then in 1965 when Hakatere College and Ashburton High School amalgamated to form Ashburton College, we ended up with our primary school friends again. Our first reunion!

So what were some of things happening motoring-wise back in 1965?

A car which has become an iconic member of the Ford stable – the Mustang – had been introduced six months earlier.

The development of the vehicles sometimes called pony cars is a classic example of a team of executives, led by the legendary Lee Iacocca, recognising a gap in the market and following their instincts.

Ford were doing well in England too, where the Cortina was a top seller in 1965.

But GM products weren’t to be sneezed at either. Production of the PB Vauxhall ended in 1965, but in same year GM’s Australia branch introduced the Holden HD. Even though they appeared a few years before, there was still a lot of interest in Minis, both the ones which were worn and the ones which were driven!

There is still debate about which created most interest.

All of a sudden with Minis – the ones which were driven – we heard about front wheel drive.

What an amazing concept – but one day some of us found out the hard way front wheel drive wasn’t such a new idea after all.

We talked a lot about this incredible innovation, being little aware that Andre Citroën had introduced his famous Traction Avant (front wheel drive) many years before, and this leads to a school memory that has remained in the minds of many of us.

Students and those who pass by Ashburton College these days may find it hard to believe that back in 1965 it was uncommon for any of us to drive to school. But those who did sometimes paid a price. Just as a classmate was about to drive off others would often lift the rear of their car, leaving the back wheels spinning and the car and its unfortunate driver going nowhere. It was just one of those harmless pranks which became a tradition. But it wasn’t only pupils who were subjected

to the tradition – we treated our teachers equally – so if the occasion was right, maybe a birthday or a teacher leaving (mind you with great kids like us why would they want to?) they were given the treatment too.

Amongst our teachers was a gentleman who taught French, and was obviously very interested in the culture of that country a real Francophile. To us he seemed the epitome of a Frenchman, often wearing a beret and what more he drove a Citroën Light Fifteen.

For whatever reason, his day and his turn to experience this wonderful tradition finally came. Just as he was about to drive off, the back wheels were lifted off the ground but the joke was on those who did the lifting; they found out Minis were not the only cars with front wheel drive.

It probably looked quite funny – a Citroën taking off down Grey Street with several chaps being dragged behind it, and the driver possibly singing Viva la France!

All the drag and lifting the holders could muster was to no avail, so finally they were forced to let go. The car, and no doubt the driver still resplendent in his beret, gave a bit of a lurch and a bump then carried on, while those involved swallowed their pride.

Gradually, during our final school years, one or two did get cars, and I recall one classmate inheriting his grandfather’s Model A canvas top truck.

One Monday he recounted being at a rather posh weekend party, during which some ponce in an attempt to embarrass a young fellow asked “and what kind of car do you drive?” to which he retorted “a Ford convertible”.

In 1965 our Trio at the Top, Chris Amon, Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren were

really making a name for themselves in international motorsport – Kiwis as is often the case, punching above their weight.

Two years later Denny Hulme became the first – and to date only – Kiwi Formula One World Champion driver.

When Ashburton College began the junior school was based at the former Hakatere site, and the senior school occupied the High School (now Intermediate School) campus.

The teachers often moved up and down Cass Street in Bedford vans with sliding doors, in what appeared at times to be a rather interesting and possibly lifethreatening logistical exercise.

In one of his songs of the time Bob Dylan said the times they are a-changing.

And they certainly were!

Influences like The Beatles and changing social attitudes had come along. Cars were changing too, but it’s interesting to think two of the cars mentioned – the Mini and the Mustang – and for that matter the other mini are still very much with us.

Written on a Monday looking back on a great weekend, these words will appear in print on Friday, when we’ll be able to look forward to another good weekend.

A weekend which will mark the conclusion of Wheels Week.

Ironically on the first weekend of Wheels Week there was a fabulous Show and Shine; there’ll be another equally fabulous one this weekend, when the Vintage Car Club stages a Show and Shine between 11am and 2pm at the VTNZ car park on West Street.

The College reunion was great, and it’s been great after an absence last year to have been reunited with Wheels Week.

Wheels Week 2021 has been nothing short of great! And everyone who made it happen, organisers, sponsors, participants, spectators and supporters deserve a huge pat on the back and our thanks.

Super Rugby - round two How does Super Rugby Trans-Tasman work?

The five New Zealand teams – Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders, Highlanders and Hurricanes – and the five Australian teams – Brumbies, Western Force, Rebels, Reds and Waratahs – will battle for Trans-Tasman supremacy.

It’s a condensed competition of just six weeks.

Each New Zealand team plays each Australian team once over the five weeks of round robin play. New Zealand teams don’t play other New Zealand teams and Australian teams don’t play other Australian teams – we’ve already seen plenty of that.

The scoring system remains the same, with four points for a win, two points for a draw and nothing for a loss.

Teams can earn a bonus point if they lose by seven points of fewer,

and another if they score three tries more than their opposition.

The top two teams after the five weeks will meet in the final.

It doesn’t have to be New Zealand v Australia in the final, because the competition is run on a single ladder and not with a conference system.

The two teams with the highest points total will be the finalists, so there could be two New Zealand teams competing in the final.

Fans of the captain’s challenge will be disappointed to read that utter time-waster has been abolished for this competition.

The rule that a player who is shown a red card can be replaced after 20 minutes will remain in place, as will the polarising goal-line drop out rule.

Golden point will not feature in the round robins, but will be in play if required during the final.

New star emerges Second placings galore for locals

The locals may not have picked up a winner on their home track of Ashburton on Wednesday, but the venue did play host to the potential launch of a future topline galloper.

His name? Maximus Prime.

It’s a rare sight these days to see a horse go out in the thoroughbred world paying less than $2 for the win, with the only other runner in the South Island in recent memory being Atishu in the Warstep Stakes last month.

But such was the confidence in the John Blackadder-trained runner that he started well inside the red, and while there were a couple of nervous moments, he duly delivered.

Handled with aplomb by top jock Samantha Wynne, Maximus Prime burst through at the top of the straight and ran away to win with ease – justifying his heavy favouritism and all of the pre-race expectation.

“He’s a special horse, he’s got a big future,” Blackadder said as they were loading his charge into the gates.

Despite the rarity of short-priced favourites in the South Island, punters took that confidence and piled it onto Elizabeth Rose in the next, backing her into inside the $2 mark.

Again, it was Wynne in the saddle, but she was unable to get the job done – producing a big finish to run second, beaten by the impressive Sweet Fields.

Samantha Wynne delivered for punters on Wednesday, producing an inch-perfect ride on the exciting Maximus Prime. really announced the arrival of the winter racing season in Canterbury, and many horses struggled with the transition.

But those with form deep in the ground started to show their wares and

will be horses to follow over the coming months.

While there was no success to talk about from a local perspective, Amanda Higgins started the day about as well as you can without picking up a winner.

Higgins threw a saddle on the runner-up in both race one and race two on the programme.

Altar Girl finished a length and a half behind opening race winner Repulse, while Meritorious went down in a head-bobber in the second to Jack Knows Best.

Higgins’ third runner for the day, Pikey Princess, also turned in the performance of an improver when finishing sixth, after contesting for the lead at the top of the straight in the race won by Maximus Prime.

Grey galloper, Vermont, made it two second placings in a row later in the day for Matt and Sarah Smith. After finding the front early, Corey Campbell moved the mare into the clear coming off the final bend, but she was unable to hold out the late challenge of Reliably Perky.

Jason Laking and former Ashburton girl, Meg Cunneen, nearly caused the upset of the day in the last race when Mamma Sans ran an absolute belter to finish second to the impressive Island Hope.

After hitting the front and looking likely – Mamma Sans was unable to hold on for the win, but the $6 place price would have given those who follow the local connections a reason to smile at the end of the day.

ADDINGTON

Locals out to show form A big two weeks of harness racing at Addington Raceway lie ahead, and for the Mid Canterbury contingent the good times may well begin tonight.

The best three-year-old fillies in the land square off in one of two Group One features for the month, the Nevele R Fillies Final for $120,000 and leading junior driver, John Morrison has a leading chance in classy filly Lifes A Beach.

The Tony Barron-trained filly can boast to being the only horse this year to have beaten the race’s $1.70 favourite, Bettor Twist, and goes into tonight’s feature as a big chance of knocking her over again if luck permits.

Her blistering turn of foot gives her a strong advantage at the business end and it will be Morrison, who is charged with trying to give her the best opportunity.

“She’s just got better and better as the season’s gone on,” he said. “And I think she’ll keep getting better too, there’s plenty of options for her before the season is over.”

The fillies will return next week for the Group One New Zealand Oaks.

John Hay gets a good chance to get a rare premier night victory early on in the card with the promising Taurus. He has been placed in four of his six starts, and his last start effort for second at Ashburton was full of merit.

There will also be plenty of eyes on the Laurence Hanrahan-trained Last Of The Mohicans.

The son of Auckland Reactor was breathtaking last start, but takes on a much stronger field tonight, but does so from a very good barrier draw.

Currently just outside the top 12 for the Four-Year-Old Emerald at next month’s Harness Jewels, Hanrahan suggested that even if able to qualify it was unlikely the gelding would trek to Cambridge for the event.

Bowlers all set to celebrate

It’s Celtic’s turn to shine on the Midlands Squash tournament tour this weekend.

After a busy few opening weeks to the annual calendar, the run of tournaments arrives at the Celtic club tonight for their annual Ray McBeth Memorial tournament, with a strong field of 48 players entered for the two-day event.

“We actually ended up with a waiting list,” club president, Kirsty Clay said.

“So, while it’s disappointing for those who missed out, it’s great that we’ve got a full quality field of players across the board.”

Clay said that the Celtic club was in a really strong position currently with a large playing pool, and a hard-working group of committee members and volunteers, all of whom would be rolling up the sleeves this

weekend to make the event a success.

“We’re really lucky.

“We’ve got such a dedicated group of people who are ready and willing to help make weekends like this a success, and we’ve also been very fortunate to have gained the support of Property Brokers, who have come on board to assist as well.”

The 48-strong field, which consists of two women’s grades and three for the men, is stacked with talent, but one of the biggest names in local squash, won’t be in action.

The in-form Lee Barker is sitting out the tournament due to family commitments, which pushes Ashburton’s Steve Leckie into the Men’s Open No.1 spot, with Celtic club man, John McDonnell, taking up the No.2 ranking.

All eight of the Men’s Open entries hail from the Squash Midlands catchment, with Leckie and McDonnell joined by Matt Speedy, Bryan Ford, Flynn Brookland, Fer-

gus Mitchell, Jimmy Hunn and also Karlie McQueen, who will double dip and also play in the Women’s Open.

McQueen holds the No.1 ranking in that event which is full of Ashburton-based players, including Brooke Cornish-Madden, Christina Lima, Brenda Hall, Donna Brown, Clay, Nicola Dryland and Heather Bowker.

The tournament began last night, with a number of the local players getting matches out of the way to free up the courts for tonight’s official opening.

The club will also make use of the Collegiate squash courts tomorrow morning for some of the early games, before everything is moved back to Celtic for the afternoon action and evening finals action.

It marks a big weekend at Keenans Road, with Saturday also doubling as the Celtic Rugby Club’s Club Day, making for a big crowd at the venue.

Lawn bowlers from across the district will gather tonight to celebrate 100 years of the sport in Mid Canterbury.

Bowls Mid Canterbury will mark their centennial tonight at the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club, with a special function that ties in with the end of season presentations from the 20202021 bowling season locally.

Established in 1920, Bowls Mid Canterbury were due to celebrate their centennial last year, but delayed proceedings due to Covid-19 which limited the amount of time on the green during 2020.

President Tony Inwood said a lot of work had gone into the evening, and they were pleased that more than 100 people would be in attendance for the evening’s festivities.

“I think we’ve reached about 103, which is a good number, it’s a good turnout,” he said.

The night will consist of an hour of mingling among players both past and present before a sit-down meal.

Internationally renowned bowls umpire, Ann Wright, who has officiated bowls matches all over the world, will be the evening’s guest speaker, as well as being on hand to make a number of presentations throughout the evening from the season’s champion of champions events.

The centennial aspect of the evening will be marked with a cake-cutting with George Crack, the oldest player in the district, getting the honours of slicing the cake.

While numbers might not be as strong as they once were locally there’s still a strong group of players in Mid Canterbury with a number of clubs around the district.

The Mid Canterbury Bowls family consists of Rakaia, Methven, Ashburton MSA, Ashburton, Allenton, Hampstead and Hinds.
