Housing crisis ignored

by Govt, says Labour

Locals urged to purchase NZ-grown roses

New Zealand’s housing crisis is hitting Ashburton hard, but it is a problem which is being ignored by the Government, says the Labour Party.

Opposition spokesperson for housing Phil Twyford visited the town yesterday and spoke with those working at the housing supply coalface.

They had tales to tell of hardship suffered by those living in cars, garages and sharing homes with other families due to high housing costs.

Mr Twyford raised the prospect of central government coming together with the Ashburton District Council, social service agencies, church groups, building industry representatives and others to develop a housing strategy for the town.

It was an idea which was received favourably by Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay, in a meeting yesterday with the mayor and councillors Donna Favel and Alasdair Urquhart.

“If they are all there I want to be there as well,” Mr McKay said, and Ms Favel and Mr Urquhart agreed.

Mr Twyford said the Ashburton District had the biggest fall in home ownership levels between the last census and the one prior, than any other district in New Zealand. “That’s pretty significant.

Behind the obvious prosperity in Ashburton, people are really struggling,” he said.

He was scathing of Paula Bennett’s recent suggestion that people needing state houses be paid to move to areas such as Ashburton.

The social housing minister had inadvertently shone a spotlight on the housing issue in Ashburton, as there were in fact no available state houses here.

People should consider where their roses are coming from this Valentine’s Day, a local flower grower says.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year and people have been busy ordering roses from stores all over the country.

However, Paul Whitehead, of Kakariki Flowers, said most of these people have not checked where the flowers have been grown.

Because of the low cost many shops get their flowers from other countries such as India or Colombia.

The problem with this is the flowers are not as fresh and it makes it harder for New Zealand businesses to stay afloat, he said.

The imported flowers are also dipped in pesticides to get through customs and there are not really any regulations meaning people could be bringing all sorts of chemicals into their homes, Mr Whitehead said.

Kakariki Flowers supplies roses to stores all over the country, including florists in Ashburton. Flowers can also be purchased directly from the growers.

Other businesses in Ashburton have also been busy before Valentine’s Day, including Robilliards Showcase Jewellers who have sold a number of Pandora Valentine’s charms and even a few rings.

Owner Mark Douglas said there will be a couple of wee surprises with people popping the questions on Sunday.

Social service agencies had yesterday informed him of cases of three families sharing one home, people living in motorcamps, and families living in cars.

Rangitata Labour Electorate Committee chairman Glen Cameron, who accompanied Mr Twyford on his Ashburton itinerary, added

that he knew of working people living in garages, due to the high cost of renting.

Mr Twyford said a lack of housing supply was a major driver of rising real estate prices. Under Labour’s Kiwibuild policy, large numbers of affordable houses for first-home buyers would be constructed. Government would borrow money at low interest and the policy would be fiscally neutral within 10 years. There was a precedent in such a policy – from the

Milk in schools programme celebrates milestone Fonterra’s Milk for Schools programme has celebrated a milestone by delivering more than 50 million packs of milk to schools since 2013.

More than 1400 schools including seventeen in Mid Canterbury are part of the programme which gives milk to children every day.

Fonterra director of social re-

sponsibility Carolyn Mortland said she was pleased to be able to mark the start of the new school year with such an achievement.

“Delivering 50 million packs is a significant milestone and a lot of work has gone into making this happen.”

The programme also teaches children valuable lessons around

leadership and recycling, she said.

All of the milk packs have been folded flat and sent to Thailand and Malaysia to be recycled into roof tiles and school exercise books.

The Mid Canterbury schools involved in the programme are: Allenton School, Ashburton Borough School, Ashburton Netherby

School, Carew Peel Forest School, Chertsey School, Dorie School, Fairton School, Hampstead School, Hinds School, Longbeach School, Mayfield School, Methven Primary School, Mt Somers Springburn School, Our Lady of Snows School, Rakaia School, St Joseph’s School and Tinwald School.

Police are urging businesses to lock up their valuables following a number of burglaries of commercial properties in Ashburton.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton, said overnight on Thursday a local flour mill was broken into and a hydraulic motor was stolen from an unfenced yard.

An engineering company also had a trailer and its contents taken from within a fenced yard sometimes between February 5 and February 8.

The offenders had to cut a padlock to enter the yard.

The two burglaries are being investigated, but are not believed to be linked, he said.

People need to ensure all valuables are secured and out of sight to make it as difficult as possible for opportunist burglars, Senior Sergeant Banfield said.

Police also investigated a burglary at Lushingtons Garden, Gift and Café centre at the end of January.

Two offenders were apprehended at the scene and charged with burglary thanks to the good work of a local security firm, Senior Sergeant Banfield said.

The offenders had climbed over a fence and made their way through the shop before sensors alerted the security company.

Food items and other knickknacks were taken.

An investigation was launched due to a number of similar incidents at the centre recently, he said.

$2.7m road spend The Ashburton District Council has recently awarded more than $2.7 million worth of contracts for road sealing and footpath work around the Ashburton District Council.

Some $961,000 will be spent on footpaths with kerb and channel replacement around the district in the current financial year, with the remainder to be spend on sealed road rehabilition around the district.

Faulty college call A faulty alarm at Ashburton College prompted a call-out for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade on Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to the school at 9.30pm but there was no fire. Ashburton’s chief fire officer Alan Burgess said it was a false alarm which was put down to a faulty in the alarm system.

Teen collapses A teenage girl collapsed on the side of Walnut Avenue on Thursday afternoon. St John Ambulance was called to the scene at 4.47pm and the girl was assessed, but she was uninjured and did not require transportation to hospital.

Schools target learning issues

Ashburton’s new cluster of schools working together is hitting the ground running this year with one meeting under their belt and another planned for next week.

Eleven Ashburton schools were announced as one of 54 new Communities of Learning in November.

Communities of Learning (CoL) is a government initiative established to help schools work together to raise the achieve-

ment of their students.

Wakanui School principal Hilary Boyce said a meeting was held with the management subcommittee of the Ashburton CoL on Thursday night to help identify three achievement goals for the schools to work on together.

These have to be based from data provided by the Ministry of Education.

The outcome of the meeting was that several areas of work within reading, writing and maths were identified.

These will be further discussed

during a meeting with the whole cluster next week.

Having schools work together in such a way means the schools focus on all the children in the cluster rather than just their own students, she said.

“There is a very cohesive feeling about wanting to do better for all our children.

“We’re all working together for the benefit of our community.”

Once the achievement goals have been finalised they will be sent to the Ministry of Education for approval before the real work

can start in trying to achieve the goals.

“This is such a super opportunity for Mid Canterbury schools.”

The cluster consists of Ashburton Borough School, Ashburton Christian School, Ashburton College, Ashburton Intermediate School, Ashburton Netherby School, Fairton School, Hampstead School, Longbeach School, St Joseph’s School, Tinwald School and Wakanui School.

Another cluster of six schools based near Methven was established just over a year ago.

Isis recruitment drops off, says Brownlee By isaac davison The Islamic State’s recruitment of foreign fighters has slowed significantly, Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says, as the USled coalition increasingly cuts off sources of funding to the extremist group.

Mr Brownlee is in Brussels for a meeting of countries involved in the fight against the Islamic State (Isis) in Iraq and Syria.

He said the gathering was an opportunity to assess the progress in combating Isis, and reports at the meeting were en-

couraging. Iraqi security forces were pushing Isis forces back and gaining significant tracts of land, though its members still held two large cities, Mosul and Raqqa.

It was an “optimum time” to knock Isis back even further, Mr Brownlee said, because its recruitment efforts were “on the downward spiral”.

At one point Isis was estimated to be gaining 1500 new recruits a month, but that number is believed to have dropped to around 400.

This was the direct result of action taken to limit funding to the

extremists, Mr Brownlee said.

The minister said it was now clear that Isis’ goal of a forming a caliphate was no longer a prospect.

But this raised concerns that its members would spread across more countries, from Libya through to Morocco.

There was also “fertile ground” for the growth of Islamic extremism in Southeast Asia.

“Those countries are very aware of that and certainly don’t want them in their structures at all,” Mr Brownlee said.

United States Defence Secre-

tary Ash Carter asked for countries at the Brussels meeting to step up their efforts against Isis.

New Zealand is one of 60 countries in the US-led coalition, of which 24 countries are making a military contribution.

New Zealand’s main contribution to the fight against Isis is a deployment of 145 military trainers to Camp Taji, near Baghdad, where they are training local forces.

The non-combat deployment is expected to last two years, though it could be extended.

A man died in a workplace incident in Christchurch yesterday afternoon. The man died at Forklifts NZ on Waterloo Rd, Hornby. The company said it is not making any comment about the incident at this stage. St John were called to the scene just before 4pm, sending an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle. Mr Asia lawyer dies Hundreds turned out to farewell “Mr Asia” lawyer Edward Poulter Leary in Auckland yesterday. Hell’s Angels and peers from the legal industry were among those who packed out Parnell’s St Mary’s-inHoly Trinity. Affectionately known as “Eb”, Mr Leary died of cancer on Sunday of cancer at the age of 71.

The former counsel to Mr Asia drug syndicate kingpin Terry Clark, Mr Leary’s sister, Caroline Main, said no one could describe her brother better than the late Sir Peter Williams, who once said “Whenever Eb walked into the room, he brought a certain amount of swank.”

Tributes for cyclist Tributes have flowed in for musician Richard Chandler who died Thursday after he was struck by a train while cycling in Christchurch. Police said the 52-year-old, who was well-known in musical circles as a popular piano teacher and the associate principal bassoonist in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), died after his bicycle and a train collided at the Fendalton Rd railway crossing at 8.11am. His death has shaken Christchurch’s music community. CSO chief conductor, Benjamin Northey, wrote an emotional tribute to Mr Chandler on the company website labelling him a “terrific person” and a “musician of great integrity”.

Smile, you’re on council’s CCTV

Closed circuit television (CCTV) is a well-used and well-known crime-fighting tool, with cameras located in several places around the Ashburton District.

Many of those cameras are owned by the Ashburton District Council and to ensure the community understands how material recorded by those cameras is or can be used, it has written a new

policy that spells out what can and cannot be done with those images.

The new policy makes it clear that district’s CCTV cameras will be monitored by police. Recorded images, however, will be stored securely, with access only available to authorised staff. Unless footage is needed for evidence of a possible crime, images will be deleted after 30 days.

Because the cameras would

capture all activity within their range, council community relations manager Vincie Billante said the project had the potential to affect every person who visited Ashburton’s central business area.

“And that means consultation on the policy is important because the council needs to know how people feel about the recording, storage and sharing of footage,” she said.

The council recently added four new cameras to its CCTV system.

Along with the existing cameras already in operation, a wide range of council assets were now under 24-hour surveillance.

The CCTV surveillance project is a council-led initiative that is supported by the police and it is driven by a desire to increase public safety, discourage crime, support the police in evidence

Nature and bubbles inspire summer work

Methven artist Caroline Baker is delving into a surreal world featuring butterflies, birds and bubbles.

The 31-year-old, who partowns Methven Motels and Apartments with her parents, is among 17 artists exhibiting their work at the Ashburton Society of Arts summer show which opened last night.

Miss Baker completed an art diploma at Aoraki Polytechnic in Ashburton in 2012, and exhibits regularly, generally selling at least a couple of works each time.

She exhibits at the society’s seasonal shows, as well as in its calendar-highlight annual show at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Last year she exhibited in a major Wellington art show and hopes to exhibit in others around the country in future.

Miss Baker said her acrylic and oil bright-coloured works were inspired by her love of nature, and bubbles.

“I sort of just love the way they float away, the way they can pop at any moment, the colours they reflect,” Miss Baker said.

The summer show opened last night at the society’s Short Street Studio, and will run until Easter.

Guest artist is Karin Werner of

Rangiora, who is well-known for her symbolist works, particularly those featuring horses.

The show will be open to the

public 10am to 3pm today and tomorrow, as well as at other times during the week when the studio sign is out.

Firefighters battle it out in skills challenge Firefighters from around the South Island will spend today pitting their skills against each other in Methven.

Methven is hosting the South Island United Fire Brigades’ Association’s Waterways Challenge at the Methven Domain, and eight two-person teams and seven four-person teams will battle it out to find out who’s the best.

A two-man Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade team will be the only local team competing, with the other teams coming from Bluff, Christchurch, Darfield, Hokitika, Mossburn, Runanga, Balclutha, Brunner, Greymouth, Mataura, Rangiora, Richmond and Ross.

Waterways challenges have a long history, dating back to 1885 in New Zealand, and they’re an opportunity to put hose-running and pump operating skills to the test in a fun but competitive environment.

The next national waterways event will be held next year.

Today’s action will get under way at 8.30am and run through until mid-late afternoon, and spectators are welcome.

Drones hinder firefighters

Drone owners are being warned by the National Rural Fire Authority (NRFA), to keep their machines away from fires as they’re a hindrance.

A poster and information being circulated by the authority says that drones flying over rural fires could mean any aircraft fighting the fires would have to be grounded due to the danger the drones posed.

Drones – remote-piloted air-

craft systems – create a hazard for manned aircraft which are often vital in fighting large rural blazes.

Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said he didn’t know how many Mid Cantabrians had drones, but if they did, they needed to ensure they used them sensibly, and not around fires.

“I’ve seen one flying over Tinwald, and I’ve seen another one in the riverbed late last year, so I guess there are some.”

It’s understood some farmers

are now incorporating drones into their day-to-day farming activities.

“The lower end of the market ones are quite cheap.”

According to the NRFA, the vast majority of drone operators flew safely, but as the popularity of drones increased, so too did the likelihood of them being flown when it’s not safe to do so.

So far, there have been no reported incidents of drones causing problems at fire scenes in New Zealand. But there have been a number of incidents in

America and Canada where firefighting aircraft have had to be grounded due to drones in the vicinity.

The NRFA says without aerial firefighting capacity, their ability to put out serious vegetation fires is limited, which could put lives at risk – including the risk of aerial collision.

If a drone is believed to have put aircraft or firefighters at risk, the Civil Aviation Authority can investigate and if a breach of safety rules is identified, a fine can be issued.

Sisters love school

Bike clash People planning bike races in the Ashburton District have clearly been consulting different calendars. And that has resulted in two major two wheeled events being held in the district on the same weekend. The Mayfield District Lions have for many years staged the Mt Somers Bike Race, starting at Mt Somers village and travelling over a series of tracks on Mt Somers. This race will see Hoods Road from Pattons Road to Comyns Street closed on February 27 between 9am and 11am. On the same day, CJM Events is holding its Ride the Rakaia bike race. This will see Rakaia Terrace East between Rolleston Street and State Highway One closed from 6am to 8.15am and the Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road from Baker Street to Rakaia Domain closed from 9am to 3pm.

Pool complex busy During its first 29 weeks in business, the EA Networks Centre pool complex has had 21,744 visitors. On its busiest days visitor numbers exceeded 1000. Over that period those visitors have been on their best behaviour with just one person served with a trespass notice.

Bishop seriously ill The Catholic Bishop of Christchurch Bishop Barry Jones is seriously ill and has been transferred to palliative care, the Diocese of Christchurch revealed yesterday. The church said Bishop Jones had been admitted to palliative care after suffering a series of strokes and more recently a heart attack. It said he was currently “failing”. His family had gathered to be with him. Bishop Jones was appointed in May 2007.

Scientist cancels tour

Sisters Bridget and Sarah Patrick are taking Mid Canterbury education by storm by both teaching at schools in the district.

Sarah has been teaching at Longbeach School for six years and is now deputy principal, and Bridget started a position as assistant principal at Ashburton Netherby School at the beginning of this year.

Having Sarah, the oldest, become deputy principal helped Bridget strive for the next stage in her career and become assistant

principal, Bridget said.

Bridget moved from a school in Balclutha where she taught for four years and is looking forward to the challenge of a new school environment.

Teaching was the logical career choice for both sisters because they grew up around lots of children with their parents fostering and doing home-based care.

“It’s probably why we are so tolerant with kids,” Bridget said.

ing back in Mid Canterbury because they grew up in Geraldine and most of their family still lives there.

The pair also have a younger sister working as a chef in England and a cousin who is a teacher.

Sarah said teaching in Ashburton is great because the schools are all supported by a dedicated community that is always willing to help.

“Ashburton kids are pretty

lucky here, I think.”

The schools also work together well and care about the education of all children in the district, she said.

The sisters are looking forward to being able to share ideas and experiences of teaching in Mid Canterbury with each other this year.

Longbeach and Netherby are both very different schools but are similar sizes so they will be able to help each other out.

Kiwis charged after bodies found in metal box Three New Zealanders have been charged with murder in an apparent grisly double homicide being investigated by Australian police.

Shoved in a metal box, shot in the head, then dumped in a dam – that’s the terrifying scenario police fear missing Queensland friends Cory Breton and Iuliana

Triscaru endured when they disappeared from the Logan area south of Brisbane on January 24.

The remains of two people were found on Thursday inside a metal box submerged in a dam in the Logan suburb of Kingston.

The bodies haven’t been identified but it’s believed the remains are those of 28-year-old Mr Bre-

ton and Ms Triscaru, 31.

The pair haven’t been seen in over two weeks and six people appeared in court yesterday morning charged with their murders.

Other media have reported they include three born in New Zealand – Davy Malu Junior Taiao, 21, Stou Daniels, 21, and Webbstar Latu, 31. The others charged

are Trent Michael Thrupp, 22, Tuhirangi-Thomas Tahiata, 24 and Ngatokoona Maretti, 36.

The discovery of the box was a grim end to an investigation which quickly escalated following the discovery of a third person, Lelan Harrington, at a Logan address on Tuesday afternoon.

Well-known atheist and biologist Richard Dawkins has been forced to cancel his upcoming New Zealand tour due to health problems. The 74-year-old suffered a stroke on Saturday night which has left him unable to make his planned Australia and New Zealand tour. He was due to appear at an event in Wellington on March 4 to give a talk about his recent second volume memoir, A Life in Science, scheduled as part of NZ Festival’s Writers Week.

Upskirt appeal fails A social worker who spent two hours using a mirror to look up a teenager’s skirt in an Auckland library has failed to have his conviction quashed. Abraham Rangi Turoa, 55, was sentenced to 15 months intensive supervision last year after admitting a charge of doing an indecent act in public.

But he came before the High Court at Auckland last week in a bid to have the conviction and sentence set aside. The former community support worker at the Waipareira Trust walked into Henderson Library in August 2014 and sat opposite a teenage girl.

He positioned a small mirror to look up her skirt.

St Vincent de Paul shop rebuild makes progress In just a few weeks, St Vincent de Paul will be home again, trading from its old spot in The Triangle.

The St Vincent de Paul Society bid farewell to its old premises in July last year, before heading off to a temporary base at the Ashburton Learning Centre.

Their building, located on the corner of Victoria and Cameron streets has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.

St Vincent de Paul president Evans Chibanguza said the finishing touches were being put on the building’s bright blue exterior and everything was on track.

Two 21-year-olds found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl in the sand dunes of Canterbury’s Woodend Beach have been sentenced to nine, and nine-and-a-halfyears, respectively.

Isaac Mould and Troy McIvor were found guilty after a trial in November last year.

The victim had gone to a bonfire gathering on the beach in May 2014.

She was intoxicated when McIvor walked her into the sand dunes, where she was raped separately by both defendants.

In her victim impact statement the girl, now 18, told the court she still feels unsafe in her everyday life, and finds it hard to trust people – especially men.

Justice David Gendall took the defendants relatively young age into account.

He sentenced McIvor to nine years in prison, and Mould to nine years, six months because he already had a small criminal record.

Radio DJ recalls stroke on the air

Life in the driving seat When you’re young, you’re doing the job you love and you notch up your first race day winning drive, the future looks rosy. Reporter Sue Newman talks with rising Ashburton harness racing junior driver John Morrison.

Chris Morrison is not a man given to tears, but when his son John drove his first winner at the Timaru races last weekend, he admitted the tears flowed freely.

While the win was a red letter event for 17-year-old John, it had a deeper significance for the father and son. It was just one more reminder of the wife and mother who’d died about 14 years earlier.

With a mum who was a trainer and a dad who later picked up a trainer’s licence, horses were always destined to be a part of John’s future. Chris struggles to recall a time when his son was not his shadow as he worked his horses.

“Since he was a little kid this is all he’s wanted to do. He used to sit with a couple of bits of baling twine tied to a ladder and pretend he was driving,” Chris said.

The family’s ties with harness racing started with Suzie Morrison. She held the trainer’s licence and Chris worked alongside. He later secured a licence and continues to train today. And it was his pool of horses that provided John with an early start in the sulky.

“He’s been in the sulky for years. He was 10 or 11 when he first started fast working. He did kids in carts too. That’s great and he learned a lot of skills there,” Chris said.

John started driving at workouts when he was 15, secured a trials licence at 16 and picked up his race day ticket at 17.

He waited until the start of the new racing season in August, however, to make his race day debut and since then he’s chalked up 132 drives, recording four thirds, eight seconds and finally his first win last weekend.

He logged a second first out with one of his dad’s horses, Dreamcoat, at Kurow but it was with race day veteran Motu Speedy Star trained by Eion Latimer that he finally got his name on the winning drivers’ board.

One week later and dad’s still smiling, saying he can’t recall any other young driver who’s logged so many drives in such a short space of time.

Unlike many teenagers who are intent on making an early living in the sulky, John Morrison is sticking with school. He’s year 13

and unless an amazing opportunity comes along in the racing industry, says he’s committed to completing his secondary education – he thinks.

“I’ve got a lot of drives around Ashburton and there are no big stables to work for at the moment, but I have had a lot of job offers,” he said.

John’s ultimately eyeing one of the top line stables in the Christchurch area but knows the competition to get on the payroll is tough.

Knocking off his first win was more of a relief than anything, he said.

“I knew it would happen one day. I’ve been so close.”

Like dad Chris, John said the few minutes after winning his first race were very emotional.

His first thoughts were of his mum.

“Without her I wouldn’t be here. She was a trainer as well and when she passed away dad took it on.”

John can’t recall a time when he didn’t want to drive horses and while they’ve always been part of his life, he knows he still has

plenty to learn. And he’s learning from the best.

“Ricky May has been around me all the time and I’m learning a lot from him, I really appreciate all his help and advice and he’s said he’ll look after me. He’s the man I’d most like to be like, but who knows how it’ll turn out, we can’t all do what he’s done.”

Chris might be wondering when his son will call it a day as his in-house driver. John’s honest about his options.

“I’ll keep driving dad’s horses as long as I can but if I get offered a better drive I’ll take it, you have to.”

And he’s honest about where he ranks in the driving world.

“The top trainers might start to notice but to be driving the top horses you have to be at the top.”

His life is busy, working with trainer Mike Heenan in Methven, driving most weekends and attending school – when he can.

Mid-week race meetings sometimes see his school locker empty.

“If I’m not there, most of the teachers know why and where I’ll be,” he said.

Flava FM host Selo Alo didn’t know what was happening when he started “spinning out” on air.

The father-of-three couldn’t talk, broke out in a cold sweat and turned the microphone off.

He was having a stroke, which is not uncommon for sufferers of heart disease.

Mr Alo was born with atrial fibrillation, a type of heart rhythm disorder. He later developed a valvular disease called mitral regurgitation.

In January 2011, Mr Alo, then 38, underwent open heart surgery after being given the choice: surgery or five years to live.

“The doctors were pretty straight up with me,” he said.

“They said that by going into my heart there’s an element of risk and there’s a chance I could die.

“But if I didn’t have the operation, I’d be dead within five years.”

The surgery was successful but two years later he had the stroke on air.

“I know what it means to live and breathe every moment as if it were your last.”

Now, Mr Selo is focused on having a healthy lifestyle. “As a dad, I just want to be able to run and play with my children for as long as I can.”

He wants other New Zealanders to look after their heart through healthy lifestyle choices as well.

He will be distributing donation boxes at Auckland businesses next Friday as a part of the Heart Foundation’s month-long annual appeal.

Throughout February, thousands of volunteers will also be hitting the streets nationwide for the appeal.

Heart Foundation medical director Gerry Devlin said the foundation’s work had never been more important.

“While we have seen a dramatic reduction in death from heart disease over the last 40 years, more than one New Zealander still dies from heart disease every 90 minutes,” he said.

“We also have more New Zealanders living with heart disease than ever before who rightly have an expectation to live a productive life.”

Police have called a fishing expedition which resulted in the death of a Hawera man at the Patea River mouth bar yesterday as “foolish and unintelligent”.

Sergeant Lincoln McCrea, of Hawera, said the man, 54, and a man in his mid 20s from Eltham had set out on fishing trip in a 3.5m boat.

At 7.45am, the boat was flipped by an enormous wave across the bar, he said.

“Both men made it to the shore but the Hawera man died soon after,” Mr McCrea said.

“They should never have gone out in such a rough seas. I’m a fisherman and go out from Patea regularly. But if I get there and the sea is rough, I just turn around and go home, which is what these two should have done.”

Mr McCrea said most local fisherman know how dangerous the sea can be at Patea and along the South Taranaki coast.

“It’s stupid and unintelligent to still try and go out fishing at Patea when the sea is rough.

Charges follow baby crash A man who allegedly led police on a highspeed chase with a five-month-old baby in the back of his car will remain in custody.

Travis Clarke, 22, appeared in Auckland District Court yesterday on a charge of breaching bail after being discharged from hospital following Wednesday’s crash.

The bail breach was admitted and though a new bail application was initially made, it was later abandoned so police could check an address.

More serious charges were likely to follow after a Serious Crash Unit investiga-

tion, police said.

Police pursued the car allegedly driven by the defendant on State Highway 16 for about five minutes before it crashed.

A female passenger was in the front seat of the vehicle and her baby boy was in the back. All three were taken to Auckland City Hospital where the man was put under police guard. They were all in stable condition yesterday.

Inspector Mark Fergus said police had no idea there was a baby in the car when they engaged in pursuit.

Tall, dark and ... a pastor

I

f anyone fits the tall, dark and handsome tag to perfection it’s Ray Moaga.

But don’t expect to find Mr Moaga propping up a bar or holding his own on the social circuit.

His stamping ground is his church, albeit one of Ashburton’s smallest.

Mr Moaga is Pastor Moaga to his Ashburton flock. He’s relatively new to the job, but not to leadership roles within his Seventh Day Adventist Church.

His congregation is small, but like Mr Moaga, committed to their faith.

For him his faith has always been a part of his life. He was born in New Zealand, but grew up in Australia as part of a church community.

“And that meant my church has always been something I’m totally familiar with and understood.”

He attended both church and non-church schools and said the difference between the two could be measured not in the element of religion, but rather the stronger focus and direction towards study in the church schools.

Growing up as part of a tightknit church community wasn’t always easy, particularly for a teenager.

“There was always a battle between the church and a social life and at one stage I decided enough was enough. I thought I’m going to go and be rebellious.”

He tested the waters, partied, lived the fast life. But underneath Mr Moaga said he knew that the way he was living was not the way he was destined to live.

Once he re-found his church roots, he knew he was destined to spend his life as a church leader.

He studied theology at university, was a youth social worker with the Queensland government before he was called to serve the church from a Christchurch base firstly as a youth worker and now as a pastor.

The Adventist church stands aside from the rest in having Saturday as its holy day.

“That’s one of our principles.

It’s our Sabbath, our day of rest where we put our everyday work aside and come together as a community.”

Ashburton’s Adventists also gather on Wednesdays.

A strong feature of the church is its holistic approach to health with members eating a plantbased diet. In the past that might have seemed one more reason for the church to stand aside from mainstream, but today its members’ diet is one that many non-church members also follow.

It’s become mainstream.

Unlike some other non-mainstream churches, the Adventists do not peddle their message door to door on the street.

People find them by word of mouth and often by searching on the internet.

Many current members belong to families who have a generations’ long association with the church, but its congregation continues to grow with new members

with no historical connections to the church. In Ashburton, however, membership is relatively static – around 20 regulars.

“Our approach is a community and family approach based on

scripture, it’s about our members making a difference in their everyday life.

“We try to equip them to do this at a local level.”

And at a local level, the church

is in a really good space, Mr Moaga said.

Three years ago its home was destroyed by fire and since then members have met in a hall. Now they have a new home, sharing

their Princes Street church with its Presbyterian owners.

Mr Moaga couldn’t be happier with the new church base.

“It’s the perfect fit for us,” he said.

From high fashion to homebody P

eople know the modelling side of Elizabeth Charleston, that she has graced the catwalks of the world, is from Morrinsville and all the rest. Just Google her, it has all been written before.

She is also known for her fierce public voice on brain injuries.

What people may not know is just how her brain injury from a fall off a horse “ruined” – and then determined – the path her life would take. She certainly did not think it would bring her back to where it all started.

As a 15-year-old an image of Lizzie, with her pony Native Flight at the 1991 Poverty Bay A&P Show in Gisborne, was used for the show catalogue cover the following year.

She had arrived late at the show from her first modelling job and, as her career took off, she took the picture with her on her travels.

But it was not horses that brought her back to New Zealand to live mid-2014. It was a man named Fraser Brown.

Fraser is an investment adviser for Craigs Investment Partners.

He and Lizzie met a couple of years ago and have been an item ever since.

“How crazy is that, that I would take this picture everywhere with me for decades and then end up living here,” she says.

Getting “here” has been more than an uphill battle, it has been a near vertical and impossible climb.

In 2005 she suffered a brain injury when the horse she was riding at the Waikato town of Mercer stumbled and fell on its side.

“Basically, having a brain injury is like waking up in a parallel existence. You are in a world that you don’t know,” Lizzie says.

For months after the accident she would wake up each morning, look out the window of the rural Waikato cottage where she had taken refuge and try to make sense of the view.

“I would look at the grass and say ‘OK, that is grass and it is green’. It was that bad.”

The nature of her injury meant any small bump could cause a concussion. Going out in public was enough to induce a panic attack.

“Even a small pat on the back if I ran into someone I knew could cause a concussion and I would be a mess – not know where I was, or totally break down and have to go to bed for the rest of the day.”

Even potholes in the road could bring on concussion.

But brain injuries are unseen, and the public’s perception of her did not change. She was still in demand for modelling jobs, managing events, hosting gigs, judging horse-riding competitions and promoting any number of things.

“Being in front of a camera is where I felt at home but after my injury it was like ‘whoa, I can’t even keep up with the autocue let alone remember a script’.”

Lizzie started to find solace in other ways. She began photo-

graphing and writing about horse shows and soon she was back travelling the world, her insider knowledge and connections proving advantageous.

“I started taking pictures to cope with being out in public. It was a form of therapy. One day someone asked if I could write a story to go with it.”

This seemingly giant step in her recovery baffled doctors.

She has participated in case studies into brain injuries and in one she was asked how she could write so well when she could “barely string a sentence together”.

Lizzie says she was trying to make sense of it all by clinging to her modelling jobs and the horse world, but hectic schedules left her exhausted and, just like having a concussion, at times bedridden and filled with anxiety.

“Where was the person raising awareness of brain injuries when I had one?

“A lot of people can relate to anxiety. It is like a really bad joke and the joke’s on you, but you just have to learn to laugh about it. That as well as a brain injury means you are just short circuiting, it is scary.”

That is where her partner comes in.

“Fraser taught me to be selfish. Are these people going to be there for me? To tuck me into bed at 9pm with a cup of tea because I am losing it? No. Fraser is, so my loyalty rests with him.”

Fraser did some research of his own and found a specialist doctor in Hastings who put Lizzie on medication commonly used to treat Parkinson’s disease. This has improved things immensely and helped fight the chance of concussion.

Before her brain injury, Lizzie experienced chaotic times – flying on her own across the world for modelling jobs at just 15, consoling a friend after her boyfriend was shot in a gang initiation while living in Cape Town – but her life now is much more serene.

“It is funny, I have not done a modelling job or been on a horse since I have been here [in New Zealand] and I am the happiest I have ever been.”

Lizzie and Fraser are never more content than when drinking tea on the couch watching CSI. “When I met Fraser it was like ‘wow, this is why it never worked with anyone else’. We are real

homebodies.”

One reason for this is because Lizzie’s brain injury means she has a speech-processing delay.

“People don’t make allowances for it, so when you are on to your second sentence I am still processing your first one. I used to tell people ‘I’m really sorry I have a brain injury’ and I would be met with looks of disgust. It is just ignorance.”

She says she has gone off most social interactions because of it.

“I can’t drink with my medication and sometimes when I attend events people have this image of me as a model and try to cut me down. They can be judgmental, firing questions at me when I am dying inside.”

A big thing in the CharlestonBrown household is mindfulness.

“Mindfulness should be taught in schools, so people know that when you spill milk, it is just spilt milk.

“What the injury took away from me is my breeding years. I missed the boat, but that’s OK, I love the life I have now.”

Her life is not dissimilar to that of a 1950s domestic goddess, without the feminist angst of course.

“I can’t work a nine to five job, it is too much, so I just do what I can. Fraser loves it, the house is warm and happy when he comes home and dinner is on the table.

I think he deserves to be spoiled for what he has done for me.”

Just because Lizzie cannot lend her hand to every cause or event

she is asked to, doesn’t mean she does not help.

For International Helmet Awareness Day last July, Lizzie was asked to produce an image for the Riders4Helmets Facebook page. She took a picture, sporting just a helmet, holding a sign that read, “I would rather go naked than not wear a helmet”.

It created a worldwide movement.

“That was so fun, we did a Gisborne shoot here, too. It was great to laugh because with brain injuries there is not much laughter. It was hilarious, though my mother did not talk to me for a week.”

She was wearing a helmet when she had her brain injury, but says many riders do not.

“I have come to a point in my life where I have had success with my career, everything I have done I have done to a high standard internationally, so there is no ego – I just know that wearing a helmet is so important. I am just desperately trying to prevent what happened to me from happening to another person.”

In Lizzie’s world, after the career came peace.

“I am in such a contented phase now. I have the best health possible for me. Each day is still a challenge, but now I have the tools to get through it.

“We have a relationship with our couch and, after everything that has happened, I have stopped making excuses for that – it is what makes us happy. We are all just trying to get through life.”

The PR nightmare I

t was a simple enough question, regarding gulls nesting on the Ashburton River. Had a gate blocking vehicle access been removed by vandals, and if so, what would be done to remedy this?

By the end of the day, however, no answers were forthcoming from the organisation concerned.

ECan’s media team had not been able to track down the staff member who had the answers.

Well I knew someone in the organisation who may have been able to help me, but the media team representative told me that person was not authorised to speak to the media, so I would not be able to phone that person, and any information would have to come through the media team.

The fact that the media team did not have the answers to my questions was beside the point, as far as she was concerned.

Another time I phoned a scientific staff member directly and had an informative discussion about the gulls and an aerial survey which was under way.

However, at the end of the conversation she told me I could not quote her as she did not have the authority to speak to the media.

At the same time she acknowledged the scientific information imparted would not necessarily be something the media team would have a handle on.

This was not an aerial operation being planned by Kim Jong-un for goodness sakes, it was a gull survey, but it seemed getting information for my story was going to take some effort.

Once upon a time a journalist could phone the person they needed in an organisation directly, to find out what was happening with a particular story.

It seemed to be a process which worked; trust was built and good relationships were formed.

Myself and fellow journalists at the Guardian have many a tale to tell, good and bad, of dealing with PR teams.

There is the amusing side, from press releases, to head office personnel who display a total lack

In newsrooms across the world, on any given day, there will be sweaty brows and muttered profanities as reporters bang up against the proverbial brick wall, trying to get to the bottom of a story. And while once upon a time a journalist could directly phone the representative of an organisation who had the answers they needed, today it is not so easy. Enter the new age of PR and communications, an exploding industry with exploding budgets, usurping taxpayer and ratepayer money, not to mention journalists’ time and energy. Susan Sandys reports.

With regard to the latter, I remember one of our former editors telling an Auckland-based company representative that no, we would not be able to send our photographer to their organisation’s South Island display, as we were more than 400km away.

PR people are good at dispensing information in press releases and written responses, or referring reporters to their organisations’ websites. But their efforts do not always result in the requested answers and it takes extra time, for them and for reporters, to go back and get further information. A popular tactic among some is to unsettle journalists by ridiculing their line of questioning.

Guardian reporter Caitlin Porter said that not long after introducing herself to one communication’s team representative, they

would call her after every query to find out why she wanted the information.

“They would try to fend off the questions, argue there was no basis for a story, refuse to answer or answer in the most passiveaggressive way possible,” Ms Porter said.

This was despite some of the queries being mundane, for example, about the need for handwashing in the face of a disease outbreak.

“I wasn’t trying to blow the lid off Watergate here,” Ms Porter said.

Guardian acting editor Sue Newman has been in the newspaper industry for more than 30 years and said while a good PR person was “a gem to be cherished”, they were hard to find.

“The majority appear to have been charged with erecting barriers between the media and the

people with the information,” Ms Newman said.

While the reasons for using PR front people were sound, as they ensured staff were not bombarded by phone calls and emails, there was also a new breed who had become “power-hungry gatekeepers”, she said.

“Often the media is criticised for not presenting a full package of information, or for writing stories that are not balanced. Nine times out of 10 that is because the reporter has been road-blocked by a PR guard dog.

“For reporters who’ve been in the job for a while, it’s galling to be forced to shelve good relationships because an organisation has adopted a media PR approach.

The losers at the end of the day are the public, the people who need to know and deserve to know,” Ms Newman said.

Every journalist will also have positive experiences to relate and communications’ staff can make the media’s job easier.

Press releases can be informative and give background information it would otherwise take time and effort to gather.

Some personnel will send out daily updates, making sure reporters don’t miss anything important happening in their area.

Many will ask what a reporter’s deadline is, and aim to get the information by that time.

And they can be helpful when it comes to negotiating the datarich nooks and crannies of their organisations’ websites.

Media researchers worldwide note the growth of PR has occurred in many cases alongside

a weakening of media resources in a challenging commerical environment. This has certainly been the case in New Zealand where there has been a high level of newsroom restructuring and downsizing. Some academics are concerned about this shift.

They note the media serves to not only inform the public, but also to throw a light on to how governments and those in power operate, while providing an avenue for everyone from all walks of life to voice their opinions and concerns.

Data from a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2015) report show the number of jobs in New Zealand categorised as “public relations professional” have increased from 4002 in 2012 to 4489 in 2014, alongside a decrease in the number of jobs categorised as “journalist”, from 1075 in 2012 to 833 in 2014.

And life in PR is more profitable, forecast to pay $70,000 to $140,000 in 2016, compared to a journalist’s salary range of $30,000 to $80,000.

In his Dirty Politics book, which revealed a dirt-digging PR element misleading the media, Nicky Hager called for recognition of quality news as an essential service and public good, and for it to be publicly funded.

Certainly it must be time for a wide-ranging review on how much taxpayer and ratepayer money is spent on PR, and consideration given to whether this could be better spent on supporting the profession of journalism as a guardian of democracy and free speech.

Cost of communications skyrocket A

t the Ashburton District Council, the budget for communication-role salaries and contracts has grown from $2520 in the 2010-2011 financial year, prior to any such positions being established, to $163,649 in the 2014-2015 financial year.

Chief executive officer Andrew Dalziel explained that a council review had given a clear message the organisation needed to improve its communications.

“Recent annual planning and long term planning cycles have seen additional funding

approved for communications.

More frequent and timely press releases, a top-ten web site and a new Facebook presence are just some of the improvements,” Mr Dalziel said.

At the Canterbury District Health Board, the communication’s team budget grew from $632,181 in the 2005-2006 year, to $1.2 million in 2014-2015.

Responsible for communicating to a population of 500,000 people in Canterbury and 33,000 throughout the West Coast, the team works on external communications such as media comment and press

releases, social media engagement, health campaigns, as well as internal communications among its 9000 staff and others associated with the Canterbury heatlh system.

Chief executive David Meates said the team, which grew from four full-time equivalents in the 2009-2010 year to eight in 2014-2015, played an important role in disseminating health information and supporting people to be healthy in their own homes and communities. And there had been increased communications needs following the Canterbury

earthquakes. “Our transalpine communication’s team is lean when compared to many other government organisations,” Mr Meates said.

Environment Canterbury’s total cost of external and internal communications was about $1 million in 2010-2011, representing 0.82 per cent of the organisation’s running costs, rising to about $1.4 million in 2014-2015, representing 0.92 per cent of the organisation’s running costs.

The Labour Party’s Canterbury spokesperson Megan Woods complained this week

about the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority’s public relations budget increasing 37 per cent in the last financial year.

CERA employed 19 communications staff and in addition spent more than $1.6 million on external PR and media agencies. This compared to 11 employed by the Ministry of Education and seven by the Ministry of Health.

“That’s a huge amount of taxpayer money spent on spin doctors by an organisation that is meant to be in its dying days,” she said.

Shaun Stagg will offer Allenton’s bowling attack some extra pace today on his return to cricket after almost a year out with a back injury.

The role of a fast bowler is synonymous with back complaints, and Stagg joined a long list of esteemed pacemen by succumbing to the frustrating injury in February last year.

Stagg suffered from back spasms and swelling on the spine, but, after physiotherapy sessions and plenty of gym work, will make his return

against Tech in week three of the Muirhead Rosebowl competition today.

“I was out of doing anything for about three or four months and I was at the physio for about four or five months,” he said.

“I’ve just started going back to the gym and it’s getting right.”

Jeff Naish’s decision for Stagg to open the bowling today is testament to the Allenton skipper’s confidence in the 20-year-old’s ability and Stagg is ‘buzzing’ to play again.

But Stagg, who has several Hawke Cup matches for Mid Canterbury under his belt, is more concerned about the team’s performance than his own.

Eels will go to court

Steel, Tactix coming to town

A few of New Zealand’s best netballers will descend on Ashburton next month.

The Southern Steel is set to play two pre-season netball games at the EA Networks Centre on March 5 and 6 against the Mainland Tactix and the Canterbury Men’s team.

Netball South and Netball Mainland confirmed earlier this week the tournament was set to go ahead, however EA Networks Stadium manager Steve Prescott said no final confirmation had been received as yet.

The dates were pencilled in but the centre was waiting for an email to be sent to lock the weekend in, he said.

Late last year Netball Mainland CEO Brigit Hearn told the Guardian she was excited about the EA Networks Centre facility

and would consider it as a potential venue for future ANZ Netball Championship games.

Her comments came after the stadium had hosted the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Championships for the first time. “[The centre] has shown that it is able to host Netball New Zealand events which is fantastic.

“The next step is around ANZ champs,” Ms Hearn said.

Exactly how many games could be played in Ashburton is yet to be known.

Based on this year’s ANZ Championship schedule, towns and cities can host between one and seven matches.

The 2016 ANZ Championship series is set to kick off on April 1 when the Steel go head to head with the Northern Mystics while the Tactix take on the Queensland Firebirds across the ditch.

Parramatta chairman Steve Sharp has threatened Supreme Court action if the NRL strips them of four competition points for salary cap breaches. The Eels have asked the NRL to inform them within the next week if they will hand down the suspended four-point penalty for more than $400,000 worth of salary cap breaches in 2014, as announced last season. However Sharp says the current administration have worked hard to remedy the previous issues and didn’t deserve the punishment. “We’d fight ... (it to the) Supreme Court,” Sharp said.

Roosters on the move?

The action will be fast and furious when the Tactix hit town.

Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis has warned he’ll move the NRL club to ANZ Stadium permanently if an $800 million plan to rebuild Allianz Stadium goes ahead. Politis said he fears the Roosters could even go out of business if they are forced to leave their home ground for the three years as the development work goes ahead. The government has earmarked $1.6 billion for venues in Sydney and the proposal i was to rip down Allianz Stadium and start again.

Australians take first-day honours New Zealand’s chances of completing their first series win over Australia in 30 years suffered a major setback on the opening day of the first test yesterday.

The Black Caps were sent in and dismissed for 183 in 48 overs by tea.

The Australian bowling, particularly from Josh Hazlewood, was clinical, but the hosts looked to be nursing a hangover from their triumphant ChappellHadlee one-day international series.

‘Caught’ appeared 10 times in their scorebook.

Australia slumped to 5-2 in response, igniting hopes of retribution for local fans, but they were snuffed by a 126-run thirdwicket stand between Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith.

Both offered chances that weren’t taken.

Smith edged to second slip Mark Craig off Doug Bracewell on 18; Khawaja misjudged the angle when he danced down the wicket to a Craig off-spinner, but so did wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Craig eventually removed Smith for 71 with a sharp caught and bowled; Khawaja remained not out 57.

Adam Voges was the other not out batsman on seven, after getting bowled by a Bracewell noball in the last over of the day.

Umpire Richard Illingworth made the call, but it appeared a legitimate delivery.

New Zealand can take solace in that they have been inserted in both their previous tests in Wellington and were dismissed

for 221 (against Sri Lanka) and 192 (against India).

They responded with declarations of 524-5 and 680-8 to win and draw those respective matches.

However, a loss in Wellington would only leave them the chance of levelling the series in Christchurch.

A decent thatch of grass had been left on the pitch by groundsman Hagen Faith, in his maiden test, to assist with seam movement.

That compounded the New Zealand batsmen’s difficulty in deciding when to leave the ball outside off stump against sublime bowling.

New Zealand were 84 for five at lunch and struggled to muster subsequent momentum.

Hazlewood produced a sublime opening spell of eight overs from the RA Vance End, taking three for 25; he finished with figures of four for 42 from 14 overs.

Peter Siddle backed him with figures of 12-5-37-3. Nathan Lyon’s three for 32 helped mop up the tail.

The tepid individual highlights for the New Zealanders included Craig’s 41 not out, Corey Anderson’s 38 off 87 balls, and No.11 Trent Boult’s three sixes as part of 24.

Anderson’s fledgling partnerships of 37 for the sixth wicket with BJ Watling (17) and 40 for the eighth wicket with Craig were truncated.

Craig and Boult flayed 46 runs for the 10th wicket, the highest stand of the innings.

Captain Brendon McCullum didn’t have a happy day in his 1ooth test, not bothering the scorer at all.

Boult was eventually caught at long-on by Khawaja as he danced with the boundary rope to complete a self-alley-oop.

Anderson took 17 balls to get off the mark but a test match tends to favour tortoises more

than hares.

At least he eked out a survival plan.

In the 12th over New Zealand’s collapse reached its nadir, flailing at 51 for five.

They had lost four wickets in the space of 29 balls.

When captain Brendon McCullum was caught for a sevenball duck, the only sound clearly heard was traffic circling the largest roundabout in the southern hemisphere.

He deflected an edge onto his pads.

The standing ovation which brought him to the crease, in his world record 100th consecutive test from debut, was replaced by eerie silence.

New Zealand had few answers as the Australian attack either pitched the ball on a good length or used the appreciable bounce of the Patumahoe clay to test backward defences.

The slip cordon reaped the benefits.

The first seven dismissals came from edges behind the wicket, including four catches to wicketkeeper Peter Nevill.

The New Zealanders prodded, jabbed or got stuck on the crease.

If there was slim consolation, each of the first six exits came from a quality delivery.

Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill showed glimpses of form with a flurry of strokes, but that entertainment proved shortlived; they fell for 16 and 18 respectively within the space of seven balls.

Big Show cops it Australia’s one-day international player of the year is still wearing it on Twitter for his underwhelming total of six runs in the threematch series which ended in New Zealand earlier this week. Most athletes would be tempted to give Twitter a miss for a few days, but Glenn Maxwell is happy to engage with his fans. He light-heartedly called one a “jerk” after the fan mistakenly accused Maxwell of averaging one in New Zealand.

Maxwell says it’s all a bit of fun and it helps him let off steam.

“I cop it on most days, which I expect. I generally sift through it each day and look for something funny I can reply to.”

Sammy wants mediation West Indies captain Darren Sammy has called for mediation to settle a contractual dispute that threatens to wreck the team’s chances of winning next month’s World Twenty20. Solid start to title defence Lydia Ko made a so-so start to her New Zealand Women’s Open title defence at Clearwater Resort in Christchurch yesterday.

By anyone else’s standards, a three-under par 69 would be an excellent round but Ko was less than impressed with her game.

“It’s a solid start - not the best ball-striking day,” Ko said after finishing her first round three shots off Denmark’s Nicole Broch Larsen.

“I struggled a bit with my irons and 3-wood, which was disappointing” Ko explained.

“Normally when I struggle it’s with the driver but the driver was good.”

After completing her press duties and getting some lunch the world No 1 was straight back to the driving range to ‘try to find some good feels” in her swing.

She also had a mixed day with her putter.

She opened with a birdie and said she putted well for nine holes, then not so well, before making a long birdie putt on her last hole, the par-3 ninth.

“I didn’t hole many putts and didn’t give it a good chance on some of them which was a little silly.”

She admitted she had some doubt over some of her putts as she struggled to read the line on

Clearwater’s contoured greens.

“I wasn’t confident with my read on some holes.

“There were questions marks in my head - I doubted myself a little bit and got angry a little bit - but they are not the easiest greens to read here and if there’s doubt that’s the last thing I need.”

“It’s good to start and finish with a birdie - always the first shot and last shot are the toughest. “[On the first hole] there’s people out there and they announce your name and the last hole sets the pace for what you might be thinking overnight.”

Ko, 18, was particularly impressed that a large fan base was on hand for her 8.14am tee time.

“At that time of the day, from the first hole, there were a lot of people here.

“Even if my favourite player was out there at 8am I wouldn’t come out and start clapping for them which shows how much they support me and support this event.”

She said the big crowds at Clearwater were exciting but brought with them some added pressure with “so many eyes on you wanting your ball to go straight”.

Kenya faces a race against time to show the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that it is tackling cheating in athletics or it could face expulsion from major competitions, a regional anti-doping official has told the BBC. Kenya remains the powerhouse of endurance running both on the track and in big-city marathons but around 40 of the country’s athletes have been banned for doping in the last three years.

The BBC reported yesterday that Kenya must now prove to WADA that it’s dealing with the issue or it could face being declared non-compliant, which might lead to a ban from competition.

Russia was suspended from world athletics in November following allegations of widespread and state-sponsored doping in a report by WADA. “The biggest threat is the declaration of non-compliance and the possible consequences of that,” Christine Wambui Mugera, head of the regional anti-doping organisation in east Africa, told the BBC. “The International Olympic Committee and other major event organisers, international federations, have the capacity to refuse entry for athletes from a country that has been declared non-compliant.

“But we have to wait to see how this plays out.

“The Kenyan government is working very hard to beat the timelines of WADA.” Kenya has established a national anti-doping agency, NADA, but it is not yet operational.

Cameron Smith fires early at Pebble Beach Young Australian golfer Cameron Smith is in a tie for second after the first round of at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 22-year-old Australian shot a seven-under 64 on the Monterey Peninsula course to be one shot off leader, American Chez Reavie in the unique event that sees play take place across three courses - Monterey, Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill.

Reavie, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since the 2008 Canadian Open, set the back nine at Monterey alight making four straight birdies on holes 10 to 13, before again making birdie on 15 and dropping an eagle putt on the par-five 16th to finish the round with the outright lead.

Both world No.1 Jordan Spieth and Australian world No.3 Jason Day struggled on the Spyglass Hill course to record scores of

one-under par each.

Day had it to three-under thru 11 holes before dropping shots down the stretch, while Spieth had an up and down round, mixing three bogeys with four birdies.

Both were left flummoxed by parts of their game that are usually strengths, for Day it was his ball-striking.

“I feel like I am hitting the ball pretty good and then I stand over some shots and I just don’t quite have the control,” Day said.

“I feel okay with how I am driv-

ing it. I feel like it’s really close.

Once I start getting that control back in the swing and I start gaining a little bit more confidence, then hopefully from there I will start playing a little better.”

Spieth ill at ease with his muchvaunted short game.

“I’m just not quite dialled in with my wedges or with the short game right now,” Spieth said.

Three Mid Canterbury players trained at the Crusaders Knights Development Camp at Lincoln University last night, and will take part in a practice match today with full squad members.

Rakaia’s Seta Koroitamana and Celtic’s Christian Vainerere and Kirk Chettleburgh were put for-

ward for the camp by Mid Canterbury Rugby.

The trio are part of the union’s high performance programme, which was developed as a pathway for aspiring young players between the ages of 16 and 22 to prepare for elite-level rugby.

Prior to this weekend’s camp, the three players were put through their paces at the show-

grounds by Knights’ coaches in December and January before selection.

The holistic nature of the programme ensures the progress of players on and off the paddock, and Mid Canterbury development officer Jason Ree is expecting the Hammers’ trio to take in as much as possible.

“They’ll get an insight in to trainings, nutrition and planning, the whole nine yards about what pro rugby is all about,” he said.

“They’ll get a lot of experience and knowledge.

“Last year Nemani Nadolo played, so there’s enormous potential to go on to the next level.”

Wales, Scotland to bounce back After a head-scratching performance and deflating result to start the Six Nations, they grasped for positives this week.

They just need a tweak, they said.

They can still win the trophy, they added.

Wales? Scotland?

Yes, to both.

The teams have reacted in much the same way following their tournament openers last weekend.

Wales, the title favourite, crawled from 13-0 down against a badly depleted Ireland to lead 16-13, only to finish 16-16.

Coach Warren Gatland had drummed into his side the necessity to start well, and watched them come slow out of the blocks again.

He put the result down to rustiness.

Scotland, at home, outshone England on ambition but couldn’t turn it into enough points and lost again, 15-9.

The Scots’ biggest believer, Vern Cotter, thought they made progress, but frustratingly so.

Both coaches gave their teams a second chance for their second-round matchup under a closed roof in Cardiff tomorrow.

Wales was unchanged, while Scotland changed just one, giving outside center Duncan Taylor his first start in 18 months only after Matt Scott hurt a thigh in training on Wednesday.

Gatland was tempted to make changes because of a sixday turnaround, but decided the players deserved a second chance, though he warned them to put things right.

In Dublin, the Welsh attack was again found wanting.

Wales didn’t make a single line break, while Ireland broke through seven times.

Wales made only two offloads, and Ireland one.

Winger George North beat the most defenders, which was a tribute more to his power as he didn’t receive the ball with any time or space in a backline lacking any imagination.

It’s an old story with Wales.

Just last month, former Wales and New Zealand coach Graham Henry criticised the lack of intelligent play in the backline over the past year, at least, saying it’s getting by on brawn rather than brains.

The problems were fixable, coach Robin McBryde said.

They were just missing that extra pass, a quick flick on, some depth in formation, or the first receiver running on to the pass.

Maybe it will be different this week if flyhalf Dan Biggar can last the whole game.

He came off early in Dublin after an ankle sprain the medical team thought would sideline him for up to five weeks. But he removed the walking boot on Wednesday, trained on Thursday, and was back in the lineup.

His team-mates were calling him “Lazarus,” and Gatland described his recovery as “miraculous.”

The Welsh shouldn’t need any more divine help.

They have not lost to Scotland in Cardiff since 2002, and not lost to the Scots since 2007, before Gatland became coach.

There’s another relevant streak: Scotland has lost eight straight matches in the Six Nations, its worst sequence since the 1950s.

Squeezing past Italy is one thing for France; beating Six Nations champion Ireland is quite another.

France needed a last-gasp penalty to see off Italy 23-21 last weekend, and it’s difficult to predict what to expect against the Irish tomorrow at Stade de France, where the home side has complicated the equation by making six more changes.

Ireland opened with a better-than-expected 16-16 draw against Wales, and has been strengthened by the return to fitness of flanker Sean O’Brien and fullback Rob Kearney.

Ireland used to quiver before trips to Paris, but those days seem long gone.

Ireland hasn’t lost to France since 2011, and is tipped to keep that streak alive this weekend.

“Ireland’s performance against Wales was of a very, very high level,” France coach Guy Noves said.

“They keep the ball in an extremely precise way and can change (tactics) instantly. It will be a very tough game, but we hope it will be for them as well.”

French fans should expect difficulties throughout this tournament, in what is essentially a transition period.

Following the Rugby World Cup, Noves is starting almost from scratch.

Because he must be so flexible, he is reluctant to consider most players as either nailed-on starters or reserves.

“You always take a photo of the person who finishes the relay, but never the ones who did the work before,” Noves said, picturing an athletics race.

“In my mind there’s no such thing as a reserve in today’s rugby.”

Given that he fielded four new starters against Italy, Noves was indulgent of the patchy performance, saying “we prepared last week with a lot of dreams in our minds.”

But he did not duck a reporter’s claim that he shook up his squad this week with some strong words.

“I hope they listened to me, we’ll see on Saturday,” he said.

Sticking to the game plan proved too much for France the last time the sides met, at the Rugby World Cup back in October. The Irish blew them away in the rucks, winning 24-9.

Full-on for 2016 With the Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships just around the corner, Ashburton Guardian sports reporter James Ford caught up with local elite rower Emma Dyke about the week ahead and her goals for 2016.

How busy is your current training schedule?

This week in particular isn’t extremely full on as it’s now time for us to lighten the load and start feeling more energetic going into nationals next week.

But over the past five months our training has worked in blocks of three to four hard weeks and one light, working around regattas, of course.

On a hard week we would do a total of 14 training sessions in six days, so that’s three sessions on a Monday and Thursday, two sessions on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

With Wednesday and Saturday afternoons off and all Sunday off, that’s roughly 26 hours of training a week.

Which races will you be competing in next week?

I will be contesting the women’s premier pair, women’s premier coxless fours and the women’s premier eight.

There is going to be some very tough competition out on the water, so I am excited to see what I can do.

How has your preparation gone for the Bankstream NZ Rowing Championships next week?

The NZ Rowing Summer Squad training started in September 2015, so we have been in full training swing since then.

Nationals, essentially, is another regatta and another

chance to test ourselves against the other top NZ rowers around us.

Training this summer has been very tough, but I have noticed huge personal strength gains and can’t wait to race this coming week.

Jose Mourinho is set to become the world’s highest paid manager when he takes over from Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal in the coming months, according to reports in the English press. The Express reports Mourinho will earn £15.5m a year with his agent currently negotiating the terms of a threeyear contract worth in total £46.5m.

“Mourinho dropped a heavy hint at the weekend he has a job lined up when he admitted he “will be back in the Premier League soon,” said the Express.

Sevilla, Barcelona final Sevilla has reached the final of the Spanish Cup for the first time since 2010 by battling out a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo. The semi-final second leg was almost a formality after Sevilla had triumphed 4-0 last week in the first leg. Unai Emery’s team therefore went through on a comfortable 6-2 aggregate. In the final, Sevilla will meet holders Barcelona, who reached their sixth final in eight years with an 8-1 aggregate destruction of troubled Valencia.

Team Wellington moved into second place in the ASB Premiership on Thursday with a 4-2 victory over Waitakere United at QBE Stadium. A first half hat-trick from league Golden Boot leader Ben Harris had the visitors 3-1 up at the break and a Cole Peverley spot kick rubbed salt in Waitakere wounds. Is there anything in particular that you are hoping to improve on in the coming months?

There are always going to be technical areas that you can improve on, whether you’re a school rower or a New Zealand rower, so I will be trying improve my technique where I can, to gain any extra speed on the water.

Before going out for any training sessions we always discuss what we want to be the focus and work on it for that session.

What are you hoping to achieve in 2016?

In 2016, I am hoping to be reselected in to the NZ women’s eight for the upcoming campaign.

They had an amazing campaign last year, creating history by being the first group of NZ women to ever podium finish/ medal at an elite world championships and qualify an eight for the Olympics.

I hope to be a part of that crew again and see what could be achieved going into the 2016 campaign season.

The Ashburton Rowing Club will be a major beneficiary from upgrades being made at Lake Ruataniwha.

The knock-on effect has led to some of the older equipment, which is now surplus to requirements, to be donated by the South Island Rowing Association.

Canterbury Rowing Regional Manager John Wylie delivered a Yamaha four-stroke motor to Lake Hood yesterday morning, and the Ashburton club will also receive buoys and wiring.

“It’s about 20-odd kilometres of stainless steel wires, close to a thousand inflatable buoys and this motor,” said Wylie.

Upgrades to the course at Lake Ruataniwha have been funded

by NZ Racing, while the new motors for the lake’s safety boats are being provided by Southern Trust in Dunedin.

“South Island Rowing are currently on a renewal programme of all their facilities at Twizel.

“They’re upgrading and extending the course out to ten lanes, and replacing all the motors on their safety boats,” he said.

With a sharp increase of rowers following New Zealand’s success at the London Olympics in 2012, Wylie believes it is imperative that rowing continues to grow, insisting the donation offers a huge upgrade to Lake Hood.

“It’s come about because we need more courses in the South Island that meet the expectations of crews, and from a national point of view, the more rowing courses we have the better,” said Wylie. “We anticipate a good Rio Olympics.

“London led to a surge in the numbers of rowers, so it’s about keeping the whole thing moving forward.”

England international Adam Johnson has been sacked by Premier League Sunderland after he pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child, the club said yesterday. “In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect,” Sunderland said in a statement. “The club will make no further comment.”

Mountain bikers set for second race The Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club will return for its second meeting of the year on Tuesday, following an action-packed race last week.

Clayton Howard produced an

outstanding ride, winning the overall race and also taking out D grade on the opening day.

Second across the line was Geoff Evans, who also took out C grade in the process, while Andy

Skinner finished third.

Fastest time honours were won by Jelle Hendriksen with a time of 24.51secs, to also edge out the A grade event from Scott Albon by a mere two seconds,

followed by Drew Titheridge in third place.

Kate Donald, who was having her first try at mountain biking, was awarded rider of the day honours.

Departing skipper leaves a winning legacy I t should have been a celebration about one man’s contribution to the game of cricket (and that’s the way it started out, with a most un-Australian gesture of a guard of honour as he strode out to bat for the last time in a one-day international).

Brendon McCullum, our second massively talented, massively popular sporting captain to retire at the top of his game in the past few months, did what he always did, take on everything and everybody at full speed, never mind the torpedoes.

He blasted a rapid-fire 47 off less than 30 balls, including his 200th six in ODIs, to help set up what should have been a very healthy total - except his middle order let him down again.

Cullum are made of stern stuff, perhaps a legacy of earlier days when his team suffered 13 ODI defeats in a row, or an agonisingly massive test defeat in South Africa.

Queensland captain Cameron Smith says he can not fault new Maroons State of Origin coach Kevin Walters but admits the process surrounding his appointment had been “a bit of a bungle”.

Signify ‘still learning’ Ashburton trainer Alex Cowan has a work in progress on his hands with the capable but green sprinter Signify.

“His racing manners don’t help and he needs to switch off midrace and then he needs a hard run race with some cover,” he said.

Signify’s raw talent has seen him take the major share of the honours in five of his 18 starts and he has got home strongly for consecutive placings at Wingatui in his last two appearances.

“David Walsh and Darryl Bradley have ridden him and they have said that he is still learning,” Cowan said.

Signify’s development will continue at the Riccarton meeting today when he runs in the NZB South Island Sale April 15 Handicap.

“He’s back to the 1000 metres and it will be another coaching episode – hopefully with Gunnadoo in it they will go quickly and that will suit him,” Cowan said.

Inmates hacked to death A prison riot that left 49 inmates hacked, beaten or burned to death opened searing questions about gang rule, extortion and human rights violations in Mexico’s overcrowded prisons, where people merely awaiting trial are mixed in with some of the world’s most hardened killers.

Those questions were not abstract for Victoria Casas Gutierrez, a cleaning lady who had waited for hours yesterday for news of her 21-year-old son, Santiago Garza Casas, who was facing trial for allegedly acting as a lookout for a criminal gang.

Santiago was sent to the Topo Chico prison in September for missing a parole appointment. He was immediately mixed in with a prison population that included murderers.

With their gang ties and access to drugs and guns, many say the Zetas and Gulf cartels run the prison.

“They charge taxes, and if the relatives don’t bring a certain amount ... they beat them,” Casas Gutierrez said. The amounts charged depend on their crimes, but can be thousands of pesos. “Sometimes we have to sell our homes.”

“There is vice inside and everything that is in there is their fault, the authorities,” she said.

Casas Gutierrez was lucky; her son was not on the list of about 40 dead released yesterday, but some bodies were so badly burned it may take days to identify them.

It was a Dantesque scene at the gates of the prison, as terrified relatives waited for more names to go up on the list of the dead posted in two letter-sized sheets on a wall.

“Ayyy, my son is on the list!” 63-year-old Maria Guadalupe Ramirez screamed when she saw the name of her son, Jose Guadalupe Ramirez Quintero, 26. She collapsed into the arms of her daughter and human rights workers.

“He had already gotten out. They picked him up again just for drinking. ... There is injustice in this prison,” she said, shaking her fists and sobbing.

Authorities allowed hundreds of relatives to enter the prison Thursday afternoon. But even those who were able to confirm that their loved ones had survived feared for their safety.

One woman, who declined to give her name, visited her brother briefly and said she saw genuine fear on his face. He was only 10 days from his release date after serving nine months for drug possession.

“They have threatened them so that they

don’t talk about what happened,” she said.

“Only they know, but they don’t tell us anything.”

“Who is going to assure me that they aren’t going do anything else inside,” she asked.

No escapes were reported in the clash at the Topo Chico prison in Monterrey, said Nuevo Leon state Governor Jaime Rodriguez. The riot took place on the eve of Pope Francis’ arrival in Mexico, a visit that is scheduled to include a trip next week to another prison in the border city of Ciudad Juarez.

Rodriguez said in the morning that 52 people had died, but he lowered that by three in the late afternoon. The reason for the changed death toll was not clear. - AP

Hardy voted most attractive Tom Hardy has been voted the most attractive British leading man of film and TV, according to a new poll. The Mad Max: Fury Road actor edged out closest rivals Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom to take top billing in the study to find the stars who get pulses racing. The win comes ahead of this month’s Oscars ceremony, which will see the Londoner battle Sylvester Stallone, Christian Bale, Mark Ruffalo and Mark Rylance for the best supporting actor award. With eight of the top 10 aged 40 and over, the survey commissioned by digital channel Drama, suggests British women favour mature men rather than fresh faces. At 38, Hardy, who played both roles in his depiction of gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray in Legend, is the youngest in the list.

Missing persons checked after sex attack Missing person files across Australia are being checked amid concerns the sex attack on two backpackers in South Australia could be linked to other crimes.

A special task force has been set up to investigate the attack and police are also fast-tracking the processing of DNA samples taken from a 59-year-old man who has been charged over the incident.

Two woman were attacked at a campsite at Salt Creek on Tuesday. One has since been released from hospital while the

other remains under care and is yet to talk with investigators.

“The very nature of this incident cries out to inquire into the background of this particular suspect,” Acting Assistant Commission Doug Barr said yesterday.

The man has been charged with a string of offences including unlawful sexual intercourse and attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody at his first court appearance on Wednesday and will return to court on April 18.

One of the two women attacked was left covered in blood and witnesses have described the shocking scenes as she was rescued by fisherman after fleeing from a beachside camping ground.

“It was horrific. It was like something from a movie. It was Storm Boy turned into Wolf Creek,” another, unrelated, camper Josh Harris told AAP. “At first I thought it was mud on her face.

As she walked, supported by people, blood was all over her.”

Premier welcomes Golf Coast casino tower Queensland’s premier believes a proposed 200m high-rise development at Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast is a win for the tourist strip.

The casino is already undergoing a $345 million refurbishment that includes the construction of a six-star hotel tower.

Casino owners Star Entertainment Group announced

an additional proposal to build the 700-room tower and a live sports theatre at their Broadbeach property.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says if the proposal is approved she anticipates it’ll create 1000 jobs during the construction period and increase Jupiters’ workforce from 1800 to about 2300.

“I commit my government to

work with Star and its partners on the tower plan,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Over the last 12 months, we have attracted more than 40,000 additional seats on international flights directly into the Gold Coast. More flights mean more nights’ accommodation in hotels, more economic activity and more jobs on the Gold Coast.”

If approved the proposal would bring the total investment by Star Entertainment Group into Jupiters’ refurbishment to $850 million.

It will also double the available rooms and apartments at the venue.

“The fact this concept plan is under consideration underscores our confidence in the Gold Coast,” the casino said.

West touts video game US artist Kanye West has made waves in music, fashion and sneakers, and now the rapper has his eyes set on taking on the video game industry. West unveiled a trailer for his upcoming video game, Only One: A game in which players control West’s mother as she travels to the gates of heaven. In the trailer West’s mother rides a flying horse through clouds among angels as gospel music plays in the background.

West’s fashion, album and trailer releases were made in front of a crowd of 20,000 at Madison Square Gardens including wife Kim Kardashian, daughter North, the Jenner family and brother-in-law Lamar Odom.

“This was really hard to make,” West said of creating the game, echoing sentiments he felt about the challenges of entering the fashion industry. The game is named after a track from West’s latest album.

Loving our sports stars through thick and thin Sue Newman

I

t takes a special sportsperson to forsake the big time for the green fields of home, even temporarily.

But no-one does that better than our own teenage golfing hero, Lydia Ko. Every year she packs her clubs and suitcase, farewells a bigticket tournament and heads home to play in the New Zealand Women’s Golf Open.

Even if she wins, the purse is small change, the title on the national scene worth little more than the paper it is written on and yet each year Lydia commits to coming home. And we love her for it.

Without her the championship event would lose its sparkle and it would certainly attract much, much smaller crowds.

For the New Zealand golfing public, the open is our one chance to watch Lydia in action and thousands of us take that chance. But wonderful as it is for us, it appears to be just as great an occasion for our top golfer being back home doing what she does best.

For Lydia, playing in front of her home crowd as part of a field that in rankings is well below peer level, carries massive pressure, probably greater pressure than she feels at any tournament anywhere in the world.

Every time she steps on to the tee we expect great things. From every tournament we expect a win, at worst a top five place.

With the NZ Open we, of course, expect nothing less than seeing her at the top of the leader board throughout and holding aloft the winner’s trophy late Sunday afternoon.

Our expectations are totally unreasonable, for her or any other sportsperson. We love them when they win, we feel let down when they don’t. Tough enough for a team, tougher for an individual.

We forget that just because they’re at the top of their game, they will still have down days, off days. They’re still human and they still stumble. And we need to remember that.

Lydia might be recognised internationally, but underneath she’s still the Kiwi kid who made good. We’re privileged that she’s happy to share what she does with the folk back home. Long may it last.

YOUR VIEW Flush medians Your recent ‘Tinwald Traffic Woes’ feature mentioned the correct use of flush medians and to encourage their use, the flush median is to be widened to “increase the comfort factor”.

Widening the median would certainly give a driver more confidence to use it, but Mr Fauth’s comment concerning their success in using the median was to “merge like a zip” is at odds with the Road Code.

On page 31 of my 2010 copy, the instructions “for vehicles that are turning right (into a side road), or vehicles that have turned right onto the road from a side road” are to “only drive on to the flush median to: 1) slow down and wait (for a gap in the traffic flow) before turning right.

2) wait to move into a gap in

the traffic flow after you have turned right (from a side road).”

Unless there has been an update since 2010, it would appear you can only drive on the median to slow down when turning right and not to “merge like a zip” after turning right.

Year of the health push in our household I

t’s health year in our household – or it’s supposed to be.

The farmer likes his sugar, and in particular his biscuits, lollies and ice cream – but now he’s over 40 he has noticed he is perhaps not as fit and lean as he used to be (his words not mine).

I know that feeling well, so I implemented a new household regime where fruit is in abundance and potato chips are a dirty word.

To say the Farmer is finding this difficult is an understatement. Late at night after coming off the header he prowls the cupboards like a maniacal beast, ready to devour anything with sugar.

Rice crackers just don’t cut it, he reckons, and there is only so many oat biscuits a guy can eat.

I do sympathise, but gently remind him I’m doing it so that I ensure his longevity – in other words it’s done from a genuine case of “caring-itis”.

But I realise doing this at harvest season was perhaps a little crazy.

This year there have been patches of wet weather when the Farmer has arrived in a tad titchy.

He even told me matter of factly, when I commented that it was nice the kids and I got to see him, that after 15 years he thought I would understand that he didn’t want to see his family at all in February!

I thought a bit of exercise might cheer him up and so I loaned him my newly-purchased Fitbit – a device that calculates how many steps you take in a day.

Ten thousand steps a day equates to a healthy amount of activity and is not as easy as it sounds to achieve. When I showed him the device he

dismissed it, saying that he was fit from all his outdoor farming tasks.

“Prove it,” I challenged him.

And to his credit, he took the Fitbit and set off while I had a smug smile on my face, sure he wouldn’t reach the magic goal.

That night he came in grinning. “How many have I done?” he asked, demanding I look at my phone app which records the steps from the Fitbit. “Reckon I’ve done near double that amount.”

Now I know the Farmer. I’ve lived with him a long time and I was dead sure he wouldn’t have made target, but when I checked the app it said he’d done 24,000 steps.

“That can’t be right,” I shook my head.

“That’s alright love,” he smirked.

“You can admit what a thoroughbred I am. I know it must be hard for you, seeing as how you can’t even reach 10,000.”

So I made him do it twice more and both times he was well over

Something was fishy and so I followed him one morning last week to the yard and hid in the bushes. Quick as a flash the Farmer strode over to behind our grain drying shed and out of sight. I crept over to the shed to peek around the corner where I collided smack bang with his chest.

His Fitbit was not on his wrist.

“Where is it?” I demanded.

“Must of fallen off,” he replied sheepishly.

And then his big huntaway dog, Barney, his right-hand man, bounded around the corner, jumped up and put his meaty paws on his chest, the Fitbit dangling around from his collar, just inches from my face.

“What’s the meaning of this?” I demanded.

To which the Farmer answered, while patting Barney’s head.

“Team Fitbit. Great leaders share it around.”

Gold back in favour for investors As global stocks enter a bear market, gold is on the verge of bull status.

Global stocks slumped yesterday as investors shunned risk worldwide amid concern that central-bank efforts to support economic growth are losing potency. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen yesterday told Congress that market turbulence may weigh on the outlook for the economy if it persists.

The metal jumped as much as 5.8 per cent to $1263.90 an ounce, the highest since February 2015, and the gain was the biggest intraday advance since 2009.

Bullion has climbed 18 per cent this year, making it the bestperforming commodity.

The outlook for US interest

Vero New Zealand, the general insurer owned by Australia’s Suncorp Group, has increased its assessment of the likely cost from the series of Canterbury earthquakes by $123 million, largely because of new claims that exceed the Earthquake Commission’s $100,000 cap.

Chief executive Paul Smeatson told BusinessDesk the insurer anticipates its share of the 585 overcap EQC claims will be about 125, which have been accounted for in its latest results.

At the insurer’s current pace, Smeatson expects to complete the quake programme before Christmas.

The increase in over-cap claims

and an unexpected increase in the frequency of commercial claims weighed on Vero’s first-half earnings announced yesterday.

Suncorp’s New Zealand general insurance division posted a 17 per cent drop in trading profit to $83 million as a 15 per cent increase in claims to $303 million offset a 2.7 per cent increase in gross written premium to $681 million. - NZME

CanInspire Charitable Trust Coordinator The CanInspire Charitable Trust was founded in 2010 with the intention of providing workshops for those affected by illness, trauma or loss.
