Embracing the ‘unknown’ of the Coast to Coast

There is a sense of deja-vu marking Simon Chapman’s return to the Coast to Coast.

After first competing in the two-day event of the annual multisport pursuit 17 years ago, the Mid Canterbury dairy farmer is set to get reacquainted with the gruelling course as he tackles the Longest Day race tomorrow.

An elevated task compared to his first Coast no doubt, adding to the familiarity of proceedings is the fact that his training partner from 2004, Simon Hampton, is also back for the event.

“The best thing about doing it in 2004 was meeting him and then we trained together.

“We became great mates.

“Then I heard that he was doing it (this year).”

The pair are part of another keen smattering of participants from Mid Canterbury.

Although he admits back then there was not much structure as far as training when he first tasted the Coast in his twenties, experience has taught the 45-year-old to have a more disciplined approach to preparation for such an immense event.

He has been working alongside one of this year’s frontrunners in the shape of Wanaka’s Dougal Allan.

“Sometimes as a male, you over-estimate your ability and then you get a kick in the bum,” he said.

Away from his day-to-day grind running a dairy farm near Staveley, his penchant for triathlon competitions in recent years has allowed him both a release and a means to keep healthy for his family.

“I like to keep fit so I can keep doing things with my kids really.”

The merciless Longest Day race had always been an ambition for the father of three.

This was largely due to seeing how the Coast compared to the

His objective for tomorrow was less prescribed to beating other competitors in the field and more about eclipsing the course itself.

The kayaking phase also represented an unknown for Chapman, having only got back into the boat in the past few months.

He said it was also part of the allure of the Coast for him.

“I’m never the fastest, I just like to see if I can stick things out and share the uncertainty with people,” he laughed.

Chapman’s personal expectations would be tempered further by the notion that the race offered plenty of variables, particularly around how the conditions evolve.

“I went and watched them get out of the kayak and it was just the coldest day ever.

“I just don’t want to make my family wait for too long at the finish line.”

Rates rise fires up Methven property owners

School leadership is changing for the better at Ashburton Intermediate.

And with a new school year comes new student leadership and this year’s collective have risen to the occasion.

At the end of last year, the decision of who will be the school leaders was a tough one.

There was an abundance of CVs and staff nominations.

The amount of leadership potential was unexpected, yet incredible.

The next step for the school was to manage condensing all the potential into the traditional six school leaders – but the school did the complete opposite.

Due to the size of the school and the magnitude of potential, the school de-

cided to expand from six leadership roles to sixteen.

This included the creation of the titles of head boy and head girl as well as hub/ house captains and tech/art captains.

Principal Brent Gray is ecstatic about the new leadership at the school, being a part of the interview and choosing process.

“During the interviews they were humble in their answers,” Gray said.

He was impressed with how practical and responsible the students were during the interview process.

The student leaders have a big year ahead of them, with the school getting rebuilt in some areas to move with a slightly new way of learning.

The school will look to the school leaders and ask them what they can include that would benefit their fellow students.

The idea of spreading leadership roles was to ensure each student got a role

that suited them.

The students that showed team spirit and morale were supported into taking the roles as house/hub leaders.

Students who held themselves well and who could talk to all ages were presented with the role of school leaders.

For 2021 the head boy is Nate Woods and the head girl is Savena Fagalima.

When the two were asked why they applied they responded with: “I have always been a leader my whole life,” Nate said and “I like being involved,” Savena said.

Both Nate and Savena felt they would be good role models, a potential seen by the selection committee.

The school has been back in action for a fortnight with the school leaders growing into their new roles.

And with their good attitudes and determination the year should be a good one for Ashburton Intermediate.

Methven property owners are up in arms over the 14.88 per cent rate rise they are likely to face next year.

While the Ashburton District Council’s long-term plan has yet to do the rounds of community consultation, Methven property owners are not prepared to wait for their scheduled public meeting on the budget and a meeting has been called by angry ratepayers for February 24.

The large rates hike for Methven comes on the back of changes to the way water supply and waste water charges are applied to rates.

The district now charges one water rate for all users, replacing the previous system of individual rates for individual supplies. Two years ago Lake Hood residents were hit with a similar rate hike as they became part of the district-wide scheme.

Next year it will be Methven’s turn to feel the rates pain that comes with becoming part of the district-wide water charging system, but for that pain, the village is in line for major upgrades of its water supply.

At a council activities briefing meeting on Wednesday, councillors discussed whether or not they should attend the Methven meeting because they already had a meeting scheduled as part of community consultation on next year’s budget.

Chief executive Hamish Riach said the February meeting was called by Methven people for Methven people and councillors had been invited. It was up to them whether or not they chose to attend, he said.

“However, in discussing this we believe council should be represented at this meeting to help explain and to make sure people understand the consultation process. It’s better to front and inform us, rather than to let it just run,” Riach said.

The meeting is to be held in the Mt Hutt War Memorial Hall on Wednesday, February 24 beginning at 7pm with organisers asking for a gold coin donation from those attending to help cover the cost of hiring the hall.

New domain road Design work is under way and the search is on for a person to project manage the new access road into Ashburton Domain.

When completed, the road will bring domain users into the area from Walnut Avenue and the West Street access will be for left turning vehicles only.

There are some interesting parts of Ashburton history deep in the archives and one was celebrated this week with the Speights Ale House building becoming the 10th location to boast a blue plaque.

The plaques are part of an initiative between the Ashburton District Council and Historic Places Mid Canterbury in an effort to promote Ashburton’s heritage.

The blue plaque identifier has expanded further than just the Ashburton District, and you can now find them in Timaru, Christchurch and Kurow.

Tuesday’s unveiling acknowledged the heritage of the Bank of New South Wales building, which was converted into the Speights Ale House in 2006.

In Ashburton 1897 the Bank of New South Wales purchased the section on the corner of Burnett and Cass streets after opening one of its first branches up the road in Christchurch.

There was a need for a branch in the settlement of Ashburton due to the growing population and so the building became the 34th branch to open.

The building holds many memories within its brick walls including the fact the branch was one of the first places in New Zealand to employ women in 1916.

Although this step forward came to an interesting halt when the bank manager of the time suggested they should employ two women in the place of one man.

Another notable fact in the building’s history was in the mid-1970s. One year in summer, temperatures were so high the staff sat on the vinyl floor in the lunchroom to do their work.

In the late 70s early 80s the building took on many alterations. During the course of these alterations, it was noticed that the strong room had been constructed of a double cavity brick with an inner concrete lining and reinforced with railway track.

In the 80s to 90s the building housed various banks and mergers where it was later sold in 1998 and was in private ownership until 2006 when it became the Speights Ale House.

Trust Ashburton chair, Chris Robertson described the building as a “community asset” at Tuesday’s unveiling.

Members of the Mt Hutt Hall committee are on a mission to raise money and it appears to have come up with a winning plan in leasing out areas of the hall to locals wanting space to sell their products. Sites are available for $25 per week and the uptake has been good, creating a solid financial windfall for the hall. The hall committee has also received a $10,000 grant from the Lion Foundation towards its chair replacement project.

Organic collection A new kerbside collection will be launched in July, one that will offer a user-pay system for green and food waste. The service will operate independently of the kerbside wheelie bin collection and is not an Ashburton District Council initiative.

Building consents Building consent numbers and values were well up in December for the Ashburton District with a surge in house consent applications. For the six months to December 31, 292 consents with a value of $52.992 million were issued.

Ashburton hosts greatest fly-in yet There was quite the buzz over Ashburton during Waitangi weekend as Ashburton played host to the Biennial Sport Aircraft Association NZ Great Plains Fly-In at the Ashburton Airfield.

Ashburton Aviation Museum president Warren Jannett said they had close to 70 aircraft land across the weekend.

“It would be getting up to one of the best weekends we have had for the fly-in. They came from as far south as Invercargill and from the far north.”

Among the aircraft of all shapes, sizes and eras, Jannett said the standout from the weekend was a replica Fieseler Fi 156 Storch owned by Tokoroa’s Murray Belfield.

There were also the two replica Spitfires owned by Loburn’s Ivan Campbell, and John Hansen’s Deuce.

Also on show was a Trojan T28, owned by former Ashburton man Brian Hall, which has now taken up permanent residence at the Aviation Museum.

December was a record month for complaints about barking dogs with the council sending 15 letters to dog owners.

November, however, was the busiest month for the dog control contractor with 11 dogs seized. Most of those were reunited with their owners.

District’s playgrounds 57 per cent compliant

How safe you are in one of the Ashburton District’s 27 playgrounds depends on where you are and the age of that playground.

A recent audit revealed that the district’s playgrounds range from excellent in terms of the condition of their equipment down to a handful that ranked as very poor.

The audit was undertaken on behalf of the Ashburton District Council to provide a baseline for maintenance and replacement work and while the overall 57 per cent compliance rating with playground standards might not seem high,

it was about average for similar sized local authorities, council community services group manager Steve Fabish said.

The report found there were 230 individual play assets at 27 playgrounds around the district and that the all-up replacement value of the asset was $3.280 million.

Playgrounds were measured against various standards, depending on when the equipment and safety surfacing was installed.

About half of the equipment was installed prior to the standard change in April 2005.

Half of the equipment or surfaces were given a rating of good, 36 were rated excellent, 48 very good, 33 poor and six were ranked very poor.

The audit identified 117 items that had maintenance issues, and a capital renewal priority and cost ranking was given equipment across all playgrounds.

Priority one and two items maintenance work will be done this year, he said.

“And I’m confident the figures in our long-term plan will get us on track to do what needs to be done because a lot of the improvements are about labour costs more than materials.”

The council did not have a legal requirement to undertake an audit or to be 100 per cent compliant, but if an accident occurred in one of its playgrounds and there was an inquiry, it was important to show an audit had been done and best practices were in place, Fabish said.

Upgrades for Rakaia playground The upgrades at the Rakaia Salmon Site on State Highway One continue with the installation of new playground equipment.

Starting next week, the Ashburton District Council will be removing the old swing, slide and seesaw which are no longer in good condition.

The replacement play equipment will be ordered as soon as the designs are finalised.

The updated equipment forms part of the $958,000 enhancements being made to the reserve, which include the new public toilets, footpaths, solar-powered rubbish bins, Rakaia history signage, additional seating, and landscaping.

The Council is investing $198,000 from existing budgets to the enhancement project, with the remainder covered by a $740,000 grant from the Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF), and a $20,000 donation from the Rakaia Lions.

Council community services group manager, Steve Fabish, said the new equipment will help freshen up the salmon site for visitors.

“Some of the equipment has dated and isn’t in good enough condition anymore, so new equipment will make a big difference to the park’s outlook.”

The reserve’s new 10-pan toilet facilities were opened in October last year and new footpaths are continuing to be installed.

The Council is aiming to have the playground ready by July.

Clean recycling message finally getting through

After months where growing quantities of recyclable materials were off-loaded as landfill because of high contamination rates, Ashburton District residents are finally getting the clean recycling message.

But it’s a message that’s taken time, education and a tough line with offenders to get results, Ashburton District waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin told Ashburton District councillors this week.

At an activities briefing meeting Goodwin said the number of properties where recycling bins had been confiscated had

dropped from 121 last month to 117 and that indicated a turnaround in user habits.

While confiscating bins was the final step, as at January 22 there were 1545 properties that were being closely monitored and another 287 that were on their third and final warning.

Hangar owners fight rental increase

Their ground rentals may not have increased for around 16 years, but a small group of Ashburton Airport users are not happy with the new rental rates they must now pay.

The airport is owned by the Ashburton District Council and over the years has become home to a large number of hangars and other buildings owned or leased by aircraft owners.

When the council opted to increase site rentals those users were not happy, but after several meetings, most in the users’

group accepted the new charging regime.

A sub group, however, were still not happy, council chief executive Hamish Riach said, and wanted more information around costs and revenue at the airport.

Council staff were working through this with those members, he said.

The discussions had had ‘a bit of energy’ around them and while initially the dissention came from one user, that person had now gathered a couple of others around them, Riach said.

While the rental increase might not sit well with some users, it was important they also accepted there had been many years when they were paying rents that were very low, he said.

WHAT IS ADAS CALIBRATION?

A

DAS or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems is a collective term for the various technological enhancements present in many modern vehicles.

These technologies aim to enhance both driver and vehicle safety.

Often Advanced Driver Assistance Systems form part of modern windscreens.

As a result, ADAS systems that use the forward-facing cameras connected to the windscreen often need to be recalibrated after a windscreen replacement.

These computerised systems work with sensors and cameras to calculate the distance from other cars, objects and people.

Using this technology, vehicles can warn drivers if they’re drifting across lanes, automatically slow down if they’re getting too close to another vehicle and even apply the brakes if something or someone is suddenly in their path.

Why is windscreen camera calibration necessary?

Cameras are a key sensor for ADAS functionality and are usually mounted on or near to the windscreen, allowing the camera to look at the road ahead.

1. The forward facing camera feeds data on the position of objects and markings in front of the car to the ADAS system.

2. Using the data from the camera the ADAS software identifies white lines and objects

and predicts where the front and centre line of the car is, relative to its environment.

3. If the position of the camera is moved during a windscreen replacement, then the calculation of the vehicle position will result in an incorrect function of the ADAS system.

4. For example, if the camera pitch is

wrong then the car will wrongly predict the distance to an object in front.

5. If the yaw of camera is changed then the vehicle will wrongly predict where the centre line of the vehicle is, in relation to the road therefore affecting the onboard Lane Departure Warning system.

Is it the end for the humble tie?

O

nce a much revered and symbolic item of clothing, the humble tie appears to be on borrowed time.

The days of standing in front of the mirror and tightening the Windsor knot up around your neck and all of a sudden feeling empowered and important are fading. For many, the art of throwing a tie over your shoulder and learning how to properly tie it was a rite of passage – a lesson often passed down from generation to generation.

Yet now, where it was once deemed almost insensitive to be found without a shirt and tie on it’s now changed complete tack and a more relaxed manner of dress is widely both accepted and expected.

And so that means that the day where that favourite tie in the wardrobe finds itself relegated to the back of the shelf, alongside those unwanted items of clothing that are gifted on special occasions for the simple sake of just giving something.

This week it’s been a hot topic of conversation. Spurred largely by the fact that those who we elect to run this country have spent an awfully exuberant amount of time debating whether or not ties must be worn in the parliamentary chambers.

Ignoring for a minute the fact that there must surely be more important things to worry about within the beehive than whether the Maori Party co-leader is wearing a polka dot tie or a hei tiki around his neck, it’s a worthwhile conversation to have with people.

Ask the next 10 people you talk to for their thoughts, and the responses you get will most likely be determined by generation. Where in the past it was a prerequisite that you wore a tie to an event such as a wedding or even a job interview, now it seems the normal is to break away from tradition and take a little more relaxed approach.

It’s an interesting discussion to have but what must always be remembered is that whether or not Rawiri Waititi wears a tie, or if he wears nothing at all – it doesn’t actually impact on his ability to perform his role as a politician.

It’s just perhaps just one of some slightly antiquated rules that still remain in place when perhaps they’d be better off getting shoved into the back of the wardrobe alongside all those soon to be redundant ties.

The training wheels are off M

addy Hooper’s life took a big step (or should I say pedal), forward over the long weekend.

The training wheels came off her bike.

Her cuzzy Zac, who is a couple of weeks older and quite a bit bigger, has had his off for a few weeks now and taken to it like a duck to water.

There is an excellent grassed area out in front of our caravan at Rangi and it’s quite burnt off at the moment.

Ideal for learning to ride a two-wheeler.

Much like Zac, Maddy, a whole lot less nervous than her parents, was up and riding in no time at all.

She did have some issues turning to the right initially, which caused some anxiety, especially when heading directly towards grandad’s SUV. I do remember Josh, who’s now 20, having similar steering issues. One of his early jaunts on two wheels ended the same as a spinning coin on a desk, the left-hand down circle got smaller and slower until it stopped/ crashed.

Between the bikes, the swing we erected in the tree, also in front of the caravan and the tractor tyre sandpit under that tree, the kids are well entertained when we venture to the camping ground.

We actually mentioned over the weekend, that they are happier and more occupied with less toys to play with out there, than they are with half a toy shop at home.

Kind of like unwrapping a big toy but spending more time playing with the box. Sometimes you can have too much choice eh?

It’s the same deal for adults too. Sometimes less is best.

Manda is busy looking into a long weekend away later in the year to Queenstown.

I’m looking forward to that!

It will be quite the contrast to a weekend at Rangi.

There are some lovely sights to look at during the drive to Queenstown.

Unless you really love dairy farms, the journey to Rangi isn’t that memorable.

Although, there’s something about the gates into the Rangi Camping Ground and their ability to capture a bunch of your stress as you drive through them.

Queenstown is such a scenic spot, especially when you stop for a few minutes and really look around and take in its beauty.

Rangi, not so scenic, although there is something about watching waves crash on a beach.

Queenstown has adrenalinepumping action activities like bungy jumping and jet boat rides.

About as close as I get to that at Rangi is when I pick the wrong beach track on the 4-wheeler.

Queenstown has a casino where you can hit the jackpot.

Hitting the jackpot at Rangi is landing a nice big elephant fish.

I think I’d have better luck at the former!

Queenstown has the market stalls where you can find all sorts of treasures.

Rangi has some beautiful agates on the beach and up the river if you have a keen eye. I am an expert in finding rocks that look like agates, but get tossed over the father-in-law’s shoulder onto the “Nup, sorry” pile.

Queenstown has some lovely motels and holiday homes.

Spacious, clean and a pleasure to stay in.

Rangi has Nigel the caravan, cramped and a bit smelly at

Maddy, minus training wheels, takes off on two wheels. times (It was the dog!) but it’s OURS. Yeah, it will be nice to get away to Queenstown, but it’ll be just as good to get back down to Rangi as well.

Glare isn’t part of road safety vocabulary T

he complete package for motorists is a face mask and dark glasses.

It may be the time of year, but the glare on the main south road from Ashburton to Christchurch is scary. When you travel south early evening, the sun seems to settle over Ashburton and blind motorists.

It’s so bad that, at times, you need to pull to the side of the road and wait for it to set elsewhere.

The road is straight, varies little, and only gives respite when trees provide shade or it angles left before and after Rakaia.

The reality is that it’s as dangerous as anything motorists confront travelling north or returning home at key times during the day. Yet there is no warning.

You start your journey, head in either direction, and suddenly the road runs parallel to the sun’s blinding rays.

It’s a problem. You can’t

change the illumination or build a new motorway, so the answer is to travel during other times of the day.

But that’s not possible for many people. There are business appointments, flights to catch and friends and family to see.

St John isn’t going to tell trauma patients that their ambulances are grounded between 6-8pm or police won’t chase offenders at critical times of the day.

The answer is dark glasses or a special visor that reflects the sun’s rays away from your vision.

It also helps if your windscreen is clean.

But we need more than that.

Amongst the slew of road safety signs, I’ve never seen the words

Glare, Slow Down. I’ve seen everything else, but glare isn’t among them and it should.

If I knew and, my travelling time was flexible, I’d certainly wait a couple of hours.

But this appeal isn’t just on behalf of motorists caught up in the blinding light, it’s in support of drivers travelling towards them.

They are equally at risk of accidents when vehicles suddenly swerve in the sunlight and cross the median strip towards them.

But if you wear your mask, dark glasses and can fit a bouncy castle between you and the steering wheel, there’s something to behold. It’s called a glorious sunset.

For me a halo of pink, grey and light blue, like an alien spacecraft, hovered over Ashburton. It was shaped like a huge mushroom, flecked by Donald Trump’s orange hair.

It was magnificent and, at this time of the year, worth seeing

A sunset can be a glorious thing to watch, but not if you’re behind the wheel. and recording.

Just when it’s time to go indoors, get out and view the sky

but, a warning. Don’t get run over by a driver who’s blinded by the same view.

To serve 1 lemon, sliced into wedges Mayonnaise

■■ For the schnitzel: Place 1 chicken breast at a time between two sheets of baking paper and bash with a rolling pin until you reach around a 2cm thickness.

■■ In a food processor blitz the hazelnuts until crumbed, then mix with panko crumbs.

■■ In bowl 1, add the flour. In bowl 2, whisk together eggs and dijon mustard. In bowl 3, add the panko and macadamia crumb.

Dust the flattened chicken with lashings of salt and pepper, then dip in bowl 1, 2 and 3.

■■ Pop in the fridge to chill and rest for 2030 minutes.

■■ For the Salad: In a bowl, mix together the green beans, zucchini, green chilli and mint. Season with salt and pepper, lemon juice and zest and drizzle with honey and oil.

■■ To cook the schnitzel: Melt a generous knob of butter and a drizzle of olive oil in a non-stick pan over a medium heat.

Fry the schnitzel roughly 4-5 minutes on each side until golden and cooked inside.

■■ Serve golden schnitzel alongside salad, mayo and some extra lemon wedges.

he Hispano Suiza brand renaissance dates back to March 2019 when it unveiled a true work of art on wheels at the Geneva Motor Show: the Carmen.

The luxury hypercar, which defines the “hyperlux” segment, instantly became one of the most coveted attractions of the Swiss exhibition.

The Carmen shares the same DNA that turned Hispano Suiza into a legend and a source of pride for the Spanish automotive industry.

Hispano Suiza was founded on June 14, 1904 by Damián Mateu, with the support of engineer Marc Birkigt, a Swiss who had come to Spain to revolutionise the automobile industry, and who had worked on the two predecessors of Hispano Suiza: La Cuadra and J.Castro.

Since the beginning of the century, Birkigt had worked on the development

of 10 and 14 hp vehicles, which formed the foundations of the company and were delivered at the end of the same year.

A few months later, in 1905, Hispano Suiza produced its first vehicle, the armoured type Birkigt system, which was equipped with a four-cylinder engine and delivered 20 CV of power, with a top speed of 87 km/h.

Hispano Suiza began to grow, set up a factory in France and sold the manufacturing license to other manufacturers in the United Kingdom, Italy and the former

Czechoslovakia, which contributed to its expansion throughout the world.

Little by little it began to rival the great manufacturers of the time and became synonymous with luxury and high society.

During World War I, Hispano Suiza focused its efforts on manufacturing aviation engines, putting into practice all the experience acquired in the automotive industry.

It was an important period for the company, which prospered. Even today,

its legacy as a successful manufacturer of aeronautical engines (more than 50,000 units were produced) is still present in Hispano Suiza vehicles, through its legendary logo: the stork.

The stork, pays tribute to the French squadron emblem painted on the side of a Hispano-Suiza powered fighter aircraft that had been flown during World War I. Together with the Spanish and Swiss flags, it has become the trademark logo of the manufacturer.

Over the years, Hispano Suiza became synonymous with luxury and exclusivity, only available to a selected few.

Its list of illustrious clients included Alfonso XIII of Spain, Gustavo V of Sweden, Carlos II of Romania, Luis II of Monaco, Pablo Picasso, André Citroën, Coco Chanel, René Lacoste or Albert Einstein and more recently Paul McCartney, to name but a few.

ild hybrid technology comes to the prestigious E-Class range with the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz E 350 Sedan, Coupé and Cabriolet featuring EQ Boost, a 48-volt electrical system that adds extra power and can generate smoother response and improved fuel economy.

The new E 350 variant – available across all body styles – will be equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine featuring 220 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque, allied to a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission.

The addition of EQ Boost, a 48-volt integrated electric motor, assists the engine with up to an extra 10 kW and 150 Nm for short periods, enabling the four-cylinder to deliver the responsiveness of a larger engine.

The combination propels the E 350 Sedan and Coupé variants from standstill to 100 km/h in a sprightly 5.9 seconds (Cabriolet: 6.1 seconds).

Additionally, EQ Boost utilises high-efficiency energy recuperation to supply power to the battery, making it possible to drive without the combustion engine (known as “sailing”).

This makes fuel savings possible that were previously the exclusive domain of high-voltage hybrid technology. Combined cycle fuel economy is rated at 7.7L/100km for Sedan and Coupé models, and 7.8L/100km for the Cabriolet.

MAJOR MILESTONE

Sam notches up win 500 Samantha Ottley was typically low key after becoming just the second woman to notch 500 driving wins in New Zealand.

Ottley reached the milestone in style at Oamaru on Wednesday driving Deceptive Lee in the second leg of a treble of wins for Ashburton trainer David Mitchell, alongside Mayhem In Malibu and Makasar Boy. The Canterbury horsewoman joins her northern counterpart Nicky Chilcott, a pioneering woman in New Zealand harness racing, as a 500-race winning female driver.

Though proud to be something of a pioneer herself, the large number of women now in the driving ranks in New Zealand means Ottley doesn’t think of her achievement as anything too unusual.

“It is pretty cool, but it is not really too much to think about, really.

“There are so many girls getting out there and driving which is awesome to see.

“And they are certainly kicking a lot of goals.”

Ottley ranks Rocker Band’s Group One win at the Harness Jewels in 2016 as one of the biggest highlights of her career.

But it was a different win that crossed her mind as she passed the Oamaru winning post with Deceptive Lee.

DAVID MITCHELL PRODUCES THREE WINNERS

Sam Ottley brought up the 500th win of her driving career on Wednesday on the Mid Canterbury trained pacer, Deceptive Lee. “It is pretty special to win a Group One race, and to do it at the Jewels on a mare like that is right up there.”

“But you never forget your first win, either. I thought about that as I crossed the line.”

“That was here at Oamaru with a horse that mum owned and trained.

“So that was pretty cool.”

Ottley drove Nigel Paul to win for her mother, Denise, on her 18th birthday, and in her first-ever race drive, in 2008.

The trainer has been a big supporter of her daughter throughout her driving career.

“She is a huge supporter, she is always watching all of my races and she has been a big part of it,” Ottley said.

“There have been a lot of people along the way that have supported me.”

“I have worked with some great people like Colin and Julie DeFilippi.”

“I probably wouldn’t have driven half of the winners I have without Mark Jones.”

“He has been a great supporter.”

“You have to sit back and think about it really, it is a lot of winners,” Ottley said.

“You just cruise through really, the milestones just pop up.”

“Each winner I like to try to drive more winners than the previous year.”

“Getting a milestone like this, it happens when it happens.”

“I am having a bit of luck, certainly the last week anyway.”

“I am getting on some nice horses and it has been a good season.”

Nicky Chilcott has 648 wins as a harness driver in New Zealand, giving her a 148 head start in the race to become the first woman to 1000 driving wins in New Zealand.

Coast continues to rise

The largest field in history.

It seems to be the case each passing year, however even on the coat-tails of Covid, the Coast to Coast continues to swell in popularity.

The 39th edition of the renowned annual multisport race gets under way this morning, with two-day competitors setting off from Kumara Beach.

The Longest Day one-day event is then set in motion from 6am tomorrow.

Dozens from the Mid Canterbury district will again line up throughout several Coast events.

Once again operating with a crowded field at capacity indicates former Methven lad Glen Currie, who is again at the helm as race director, is succeeding as the boss of the 243km challenge.

“This will be bigger again,” he said.

“It just keeps on growing.”

It will be the third Coast that Currie has been in charge of, after he took over from Richard Ussher in 2018.

High rainfall in the headwaters of the Otira and Deception rivers during last year’s race forced Currie and co into an alternate route for the first time in a decade as hundreds headed up over the Otira Viaduct.

Although rainfall had expected to fall in key areas in the days leading up, Currie said he was hopeful there would not be a repeat of last year, with fine weather expected today and tomorrow.

“Potentially it is going to be positive because it might add some water to the river for the kayak,” he said.

“What we’re hoping is that there’s not too much rain to the extent that we can’t safely get over the mountain run, and we have to go to our plan B option.”

However, Currie explained there had been both positive and negative impacts to the event due to Covid.

“For a lot of people over the lockdown period they’ve actually squeezed in a little bit of extra training.

“We usually have about 150 competitors coming from overseas which we unfortunately don’t have this year.”

Contingency plans had also been developed around a possible move to Alert

As far as the action on the course goes, the absence of four-time Longest Day winner Sam Clark opens up the men’s field.

Wanaka’s Dougall Allan, who first won the event in 2019, is tipped to go one better tomorrow after finishing seven minutes behind Clark last year.

Christchurch’s Sam Manson will be gunning for a first ever win following

a couple of podium finishes in recent years.

Ashburton’s Matt Amos will be carrying local hopes, and was expected to be in contention for a top 10 finish after succumbing to the arduous conditions last year.

As is the case for the return of 2019 women’s winner Simone Maier, who also withdrew during the kayak last year.

The German-born competitor heads up a very evenly matched field which includes Ali Wilson (Tauranga), Fiona Dowling (Christchurch) and Nelson’s Elina Ussher.

Methven’s Rob Markillie completed the Coast to Coast in 2016, and said he would never do it again.

This morning he was back on the start line on Kumara Beach, ready to tackle the 243km trek to Sumner Beach again in the twoday event.

“A change of job and the fact I needed a really good mental challenge, something to focus on, was the driver behind it,” Markillie said.

“My kids are a bit older now and they could come with me as support crew, but also come along on my trainings which has been really cool.”

After 15 years working for Methven seed company South Pacific Seeds, Markillie branched out on his own, starting up an agricultural health and safety company, Core Health and Safety.

As well as the change in employment, he saw contesting the Coast to Coast again as a great way to refocus his mind.

“The Coast to Coast is a great mental challenge to say to your-

self can I get myself from one side to the other side under my own steam.

“I think the mental side of things is just as tough, if not

tougher, than the actual physical challenge of the race.”

In 2016, Markillie made the crossing in 16 hours and 42 minutes 43 seconds.

He has no desire to try to better that time, although it would be nice he said, but is more focused on matching the achievement of simply making it to the Sumner

finish line in one piece.

“I just want to get there.”

The course is relatively the same and he will be using the same equipment he did last time, the only major change is he is five years older.

“The older body has a few more creaks and pains the next day after training than it did five years ago.

“The training could have gone better, but it has been all right.

“You can always do more but logistically and realistically, the family and work come first and training comes second.”

A member of the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade, Markillie hasn’t sat idle since last completing the South Island traverse, contesting the Sky Tower challenge and was starting to get into competing the firefighter combat challenge but that has taken a back seat to his current multi-sport pursuits – which will end when he reaches the finish line in Sumner on Saturday afternoon.

AshColl’s 1st XI has an uphill battle ahead if it wants to avoid an outright innings defeat in its two-day game with St Bede’s College, which finishes tomorrow. The Christchurch school is well on top after Saturday’s first day at the Ashburton Domain, where the hosts were asked to follow on. Bede’s made 218 after winning the toss and electing to bat, with Lachlan Busch top scoring with 61. Devon Flannery (above) impressed with the ball, taking 4-31. In reply, AshColl were routed for 64 with Millar Newlands top scoring with 22 not out, batting at 10. Behind by 154 runs, AshColl were sent in again where it got to 23/1 by the end of the day’s play. Another 132 runs are required just to make the St Bede’s boys bat again.

Tackling the new season

It may have only been pre-season trials, but there was no shortage of competitive edge for the Mid Canterbury United women this week. About a dozen took part in the pre-season get-together on Monday, a session which was run by Darren Cavill. A return to Mainland’s Sunday Women’s League remained the intention for the club after squad numbers took a hit from Covid in 2020. Cilla Anderson goes in for a slide tackle on Lauren Taylor during this week’s kick-around.

Messiah The Mid Canterbury Choir is thrilled to be presenting Messiah in the week prior to Easter – the traditional time Messiah was always sung.

Our 2020 Messiah was cancelled due to Covid lockdown. Sixty singers – a combination of the Mid Canterbury Choir, with extra singers from Christchurch, Timaru and Darfield, will perform Messiah at St Stephens Church. The Ride the Rakaia will not be held in 2021.

The annual 100km road bike race, which was scheduled to be held in eight days’ time, has been cancelled due to a lack of entries.

Organisers issued a statement confirming the cancellation on Wednesday, after a plea for more entrants was posted over its so-

cial media channels last week.

“It is with regret that Ride the Rakaia will not be held in 2021.

“Since Covid-19 we have found road cycling event numbers well down and while we have tried to adjust our budget accordingly to stage Ride the Rakaia, we can’t manage it with the number of entries we have without running at a loss.”

The renowned Mid Canterbury cycle race is run by CJM Events Limited’s Carol and John Moore.

About 70 more competitors were reportedly needed to make the Rakaia race feasible to be staged when organisers sent a post out over Facebook last Thursday.

There was a view expressed from a handful of commenters that the price of entry was too expensive for an open road cycle race.

Event organisers refuted this in the comments, highlighting that it was not cheap to have the

$12.

Rakaia Bridge closed to all motorists for a 15-minute period during racing.

Entry fees for adult riders aged 18 and over were priced at $109, with the tandem event priced at $189.

Juniors aged 13-17 were priced at $69.

A review of the event will be conducted over the coming months.

infrastructure invested in the event.”

An option for competitors to transfer their entry fee to the Around Brunner Cycle Ride was offered.

That event, which comprises of the 130km race and 260km Enduro, will be held on May 1.

There was also an option for entrants to be credited an entry fee for any other CJM event, otherwise a full refund would be offered.
