Slogan shake-up

A slogan. A catch cry. A tourist-pulling badge.

Towns and cities in New Zealand and all over the planet have slogans. But Ashburton? Well, not really.

We say not really because Ashburton: “Whatever it Takes’’ is apparently still on the books as our slogan from a very distant and clearly lacking in innovation past. And we guess it will remain Ashburton’s slogan until someone comes up with something better, something more reflective of the town and district and its changing face. So here at the Ashburton Guardian we’ve decided to take the lead on what is a bit of a slogan shambles. We asked readers for their thoughts and we got swamped. On our front cover, we’ve picked two of the best from Jo Metcalf, with her Ashburton - Sea to Ski concept and Trudy Williamson’s Ashburton - Heart of the Plains. ‘Misinformation’ driving nitrate fears – ECan rep

A local Environment Canterbury (ECan) councillor has described concerns around a Mid Canterbury irrigation scheme renewal as the result of “irresponsible misinformation”.

A public meeting in Christchurch attracted more than 100 people this week, where concerns around levels of nitrates in Canterbury drinking water were conveyed.

The session, organised by independent environmentalist Angus Robson, was triggered

by Mayfield Hinds Valetta Irrigation Scheme’s application for consent renewal with disputants of the move fearing higher levels of nitrate would be discharged.

An independent commissioner concluded a hearing this week around MHV Water’s bid

Ian Mackenzie for a replacement consent to irrigate 56,000 hectares of private farmland for the next 10 years, about half of the Southern Ashburton zone.

The public is unable to make submissions because they were able to do so as part of the orig-

inal consent process.

ECan’s Mid Canterbury representative Ian Mackenzie, who could not comment on the consenting process, said the meeting served as a platform for “deliberate misinformation”.

He said MHV’s nutrient level discharge had been tracking downward to low levels and would continue to do so to comply with ECan plan conditions.

“They’re using misinformation to stir up public concern,” he said.

“It’s highly irresponsible.

“If MHV are successful with their consenting process, there will be a reduction of nitrate losses, not an increase.”

“Any suggestion that this is going to allow increase nitrate loss is rubbish.”

ECan’s Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan requires a 45 per cent reduction in nitrogen losses from farming activi-

ties in the Lower Hinds/Hekeao Plains Area by 2035.

MHV Water chief executive Melanie Brooks believed the meeting was “interesting” and “not fairly represented” as far as the views of MHV and local farmers in the area.

“I think people are concerned about nitrates in their drinking water and the implications of that,” she said.

“In the absence of us providing information about what’s happening and what’s going on, people will fill the gaps.

“Our most recent round of sampling of nitrate in the groundwater and surface water in the Hekeao/Hinds’ catchment as confirmed we are continuing in a downward trend.”

She said MHV had not had an opportunity to participate in the concerns expressed until Wednesday’s meeting and pushed for further involvement around talks on the matter.

Speed fiend wants moment of glory

Phil Garrett wants to break the open road speed limit by more than 200km/h.

This weekend, on a stretch of McCrory’s Road at Pendarves, Phil plans to become the new national motorcycle land speed record holder. His aim is to reach a speed of 325km/h to break the existing record set more than 20 years ago.

On a 45-year-old Kawasaki, rebuilt in his Burwood garage, he will scorch down McCrory’s Road in his attempt to set a new record for the flying kilometre and the flying quarter mile.

Garrett and his team of 18, which includes fellow drivers Rob Small, ex-Ashburton, and Des Bull, have set up timing equipment in the middle 1 to 2km stretch of a 5km section of the roadway.

Council to cover costs The Ashburton District Council has “unanimously” agreed to additional funding for struggling CBD businesses.

A delighted Bob McDonald of the Retail Advisory Group confirmed council’s decision in correspondence to fellow retailers on Thursday. Details of the proposal are unknown after council discussed the group’s application at Tuesday’s in-committee segment of the council meeting, which was publicly excluded.

Walking, cycling strategy A ten-year Walking and Cycling strategy is being adopted by the Ashburton District Council. The strategy was moved by councillors during Wednesday’s meeting in chambers. Public consultation on the plan occurred for a four-week period last year, between October 29 and November 20. Several changes were made to the strategy following consultation, including acknowledgement of the Mountain Bike Trails and clubs, additional safe crossing projects on State Highways, proposed footpath projects in Ashburton and Tinwald. The plan will cost $329,000 over the 2021-2024 Long Term Plan.

“Through this process, we endeavour to encourage more residents to be more active by cycling to work, walking to school or combining these activities into their everyday travels,” Mayor Neil Brown said in the document foreword.

Ashburton Ward councillor Diane Rawlinson believed the development of a shared path on Racecourse Road needed to be bumped up to a high priority. Infrastructure Services group manager Neil McCann said several safety audits would be completed, starting with the cycleway on Cass Street.

Ashburton Ward councillor Angus McKay urged a pushback on the rates increases which he was “really struggling with”. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown also did not favour the rates hike. Fellow councillor Carolyn Cameron queried as to whether a 10 per cent rates increase had been modelled by the regional council. Strategic and policy manager Toni Durham said they took ECan’s consultation at face value and there was “not enough transparency with their budget”.

New slogan ‘worth a look’ – Mayor

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown is not ruling out a change to a redundant and derided town slogan.

The views come in response to​​​​ suggestions put forward by the local community for a more representative catchphrase for the district.

The ‘Whatever it Takes’ slogan, which was first introduced more than a decade ago, has been maligned by some media outlets over the years The slogan could previously be spotted on a sign along State Highway 1 north of Ashburton, but was no longer there.

More than 100 comments were garnered after the Guardian mooted alternative phrases on its Facebook page.

Although there were some “catchy” phrases proposed, there were several ideas that were more derisive.

Brown said the phrase ‘Whatever it Takes’ had been under utilised.

“No one that I’m aware of uses it that much,” he said.

“There’s been a bit of banter around here, saying Ashburton ‘the heart of the Mainland’.”

Although an updated slogan had “not really crossed his mind”, Brown did not rule out a new phrase in collaboration with the regional tourism space.

“It may be a combined effort to see if we do have a catchy wee slogan to be used in the future which would replace the ‘Whatever it Takes’.”

“I’m not a marketer but it might be something that Bruce Moffatt and his team could look into,”

he said. “I’m not ruling it out (a change).”

ChChNZ’s Mid Canterbury marketing manager Bruce Moffatt said it could be a case for opening it up to the public.

“I think there does need to be something done,” he said.

“It’s more about that brand shape which says who we are.”

He said the ongoing challenge was encapsulating the whole district, rather than towns in isolation.

“We have to have a look at those things and figure out what it is about this district, that we can really put our hand up, and can say is really unique.”

The Ashburton District Council was uncertain, as to both the whereabouts of the ‘Whatever it

Takes’ sign, and details on its inception without a thorough look through the archives, when the Guardian made enquiries.

“We do speculate that the slogan may have been proposed and created by the Council’s former Economic Development CCO, Grow Mid Canterbury, which was prior Experience Mid Canterbury – so quite some time ago,” Business Support Group Manager Paul Brake said.

Council has not officially used the slogan for “a number of years now”.

Whatever it takes – for a new slogan Ashburton’s town slogan needs to connect with the district and its people.

That’s the general reaction from more than 100-plus Guardian readers and Facebook followers, who met the challenge to come up with a new Ashburton slogan.

We want to present a new slogan option to the council to consider replacing the Ashburton: Whatever it Takes moniker from well over 10 years ago.

Trudy Williamson came up with one of the best in: Ashbur-

“Ashburton has long been referred to as the heart of the plains,’’ Williamson said.

“This was mainly due to the large productions from the farmers. I like it because it is familiar and it also indicates that we are the centre with stuff happening. A slogan should connect with the area and reflect the culture.’’

Ten questions with Bec

Comedian Bec Sandys knows the Ashburton and Methven area well.

The brutally honest and hilarious storyteller will be entertaining the people of Ashburton over the next two weekends.

That will start at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre today at 8pm where she’s part of the Laugh Fest with Michele A’Court, Ben Hurley and David Correos.

You could also see her at Bec Sandys Happy Cabbage Comedy Preview at the Arabica Methven on Friday, April 16, at 8pm.

The Guardian caught up with Bec to see how she does it, and what kind of mischief she will get up to during the shows.

Q: What made you want to get into comedy?

A: I was making a movie in Wellington with Brendhan Lovegrove and Jeremy Elwood that was filmed in VK’s, a comedy venue, it was the first time I’d seen standup live and I was in awe of everyone who did it. I’ve always acted and performed comedic roles, but never considered stand-up as an option. A year later I decided to give it a go, got a couple of laughs, loved it, and now I’m hooked!

Q: What’s the most memorable moment in your career so far?

A: Opening for Urzila Carlson at the Town Hall in Christchurch to over 2000 people. That was epic!

Q: Ashburton is potentially looking for a new slogan, what do you think it should be?

A: Ashburton, give it a hoon!

Q: How do you feel when you get out on stage, with everyone look-

A: I’m more worried about getting the mic out of the stand than anything else. I love being on stage, it’s a real buzz.

Q: Is there a particular subject you talk about often in your routines?

A: Most of my comedy is based off all the loose stuff I’ve got up to and a good chunk of that is set in Ashburton and Methven.

Q: Do you observe situations and create comedy or can you create comedy just off the top of your head?

A: Bit of both, some of it just happens spontaneously on stage and you just go with it, but mostly it’s just funny stories.

Q: How have you found it being a comedian in New Zealand?

A: Awesome. Kiwis love to laugh especially at ourselves and the support we get at gigs is really

Q: Will you be making jokes about Ashburton in the Laugh Fest?

A: For sure, but more like Ashvegas as the background to my shannigans.

Q: How serious do you have to be, to be a comedian?

A: Deadly. Nah, I’m kidding, you have to work really hard at it which is the serious side, but it’s so much fun. I try not to take myself too seriously, having a job where you get to make people laugh is pretty bloody awesome!

Q: How is important is audience reaction during a set?

A: Pretty important. I feed off the energy and reactions of the audience. No night is ever the same, every room you perform at is different. Laughter is always a good reaction to get, that’s definitely the reaction I’m aiming for!

Mid Canterbury landscape on the big screen

The Methven township’s excited about the shooting of the short film, The Push, this weekend.

Filming is expected to take three days. The cast and crew have been in Methven since Thursday night, hoping to finish filming on Sunday.

The cast and crew are staying in Methven and will be filming at Castle Ridge Station and a limestone hut in Mt Somers.

Jo Raj, one of the producers, said the cast and crew feel like they have been welcomed to Methven with open arms.

“The town of Methven have been incredibly helpful with providing props and other support to our project while we are here,” she said.

It seems there was a lot of hearsay of a film crew being in Methven.

Methven Community Board chairperson Dan McLaughlin being among those who had

heard there was a film crew around the area.

“I think it’s great, it will bring some money into the community and it adds a bit of flavour,” McLaughlin said.

The Push, a short film dark thriller, focuses on a couple, Dan and Tash, who are hiking in the remote Southern Alps.

The Push’s main theme was about feeling isolated, alone and being forced to confront your fears when you are separated from any kind of outside support.

The Push will be entered in as many short film festivals as possible internationally.

The scenery of Mid Canterbury was perfect for movie and has been locked in for months.

The group behind the project now want to put more of New Zealand’s back country in films. “[The team] are all making this film at a fraction of their normal fees, but are doing so because they want to see more drama productions being made in this part of Aotearoa,” Raj said.

Two men have been convicted and ordered to pay fines and reparations totalling $7300 each for their part in a boating collision that saw several people injured and one person dragged underneath a jet boat at Lake Hood in November 2019.

Jackson Liam Harraway, 21, owned the jet boat and was water skiing behind while Rory Alexander Middleton Fisher, 21, was driving the boat at 20-25 knots (37-46km/ h).

Fisher, who had limited boating experience, was frequently turning around to

communicate with Harraway instead of looking where he was driving as there was no spotter on board.

Fisher then did a U-turn on the lake at speed and collided with a biscuit three women were riding on, which was being pulled by another boat.

One woman was knocked off the biscuit and pushed under the boat.

She suffered injuries to her head, jaw and elbow and lacerations to her legs.

necessary danger or risk to another person under section 65 of the Maritime Transport Act 1994, and were sentenced at the Christchurch District Court on Thursday.

Maritime NZ’s Southern Compliance Manager Domonic Venz said the case sends a strong message that there must always be a spotter or lookout on board when towing anyone at speeds over five knots.

“It was extremely lucky that no-one was more seriously injured or even killed,” Venz said.

“Both boats were travelling

at speed and the injuries could have been much worse.”

“The lack of a spotter on board meant that the driver had to look behind him and so there were extended periods when he was not looking where he was going.

“Driving a boat at speed, with limited experience and with no-one on board to keep a look out, is extremely dangerous.

Maritime Rule 91.8 is clear he said that “no one operating a boat is allowed to go faster than 5 knots and tow someone without having an adult on board to keep a lookout”.

Scholarship winner returns to repay debt

Sam Kuipers is repaying a debt he owes to the Ashburton Musical Club tonight.

The debt is gratitude rather than money.

Sam, a pianist and now a university student, won the club’s scholarship last year which paid for his Trinity College ATCL examination.

Sam passed his ATCL and tonight he’ll play his examination piece, Bach’s Prelude in Fugue in D Minor.

“It’s my opportunity to repay the Ashburton Musical Club by playing in their first concert this year,” he said.

He describes the work as “quite technical and very articulate with complex melodies”.

Sam, 18, is studying for his BSc at Canterbury University but still has time to perform for the enjoyment of others and his own satisfaction.

Sam is not the only family member playing in the programme at the Sinclair Centre.

His sister Hannah, 17, a violinist, is performing three pieces from a Celtic Suite,

comprising traditional Irish and Scottish tunes.

Hannah, who’s studying for Grade 8 Trinity College in the violin, is “looking forward to improving her talent by playing for an audience”.

The Ashburton Musical Club provides a space where she can build her performance skills, she said.

The club is in its 97th year and its monthly programme was curtailed last year by Covid-19. President Janice Allen is hoping there’ll be no disruption in 2021.

The club’s objectives are to stimulate the appreciation of music and to foster and encourage the opportunity for performance.

While it was first established by local music teachers to give themselves the chance to perform, the club has now expanded its vision for all genres of musicians to take part.

Allen will convene tonight’s programme which includes vocalists and items on the piano, trombone, cello, violin and guitar.

Previous performers have included Wagnerian tenor, Simon O’Neill, musical theatre singer, Tainui Kuru, now resident in Canada, and Joy Sun, who’s studying the harp in the United States.

What’s in a name, take two

Bernard Egan is a well known man around these parts. Through Tales From the Back Seat he endeavours to put a light-hearted spin on tales from yesteryear.

T

he Guardian wasn’t exactly hot off the press, but it was certainly warm when the first question came in about the strange place names mentioned in my last Tales From the Back Seat.

“Are you for blinking real, is there really a place called Monkeys Eyebrow in Kentucky?” was the first question.

Not surprised the question was asked and not unsurprisingly it was asked more than once.

The answer is yes, we were for blinking real, and yes, there is a town by that name.

Which of course begged the natural follow up question “how come?”

It seems Monkeys Eyebrow has been frequently noted for its unusual name.

One theory about the origin of this unique name is that when looking at it from the air, or on a map, Ballard County, resembles a monkey’s head.

Monkeys Eyebrow is located where the monkey’s eyebrow would be.

Another theory of the town’s naming suggests sometime before 1900, a community resident

Yes, there is a town called Monkeys Eyebrow in America. would not shop locally to get supplies because he didn’t like the owners of the general store.

The man considered the store to be “only fit for a bunch of monkeys”, and that he considered both of its owners to be monkey-like, even having eyebrows resembling those of a monkey.

Apparently when the man viewed the brush on Beeler Hill above the store he felt it resem-

bled monkey eyebrows.

A common joke in the region is to provide directions to the city of Paducah by saying “it’s halfway between Monkeys Eyebrow and Possum Trot” the latter being a tiny nearby community.

Now renowned for its historic buildings, Paducah got drawn into the American Civil War, became a major railway engineering centre and in 1950 was selected

as the site for a new uranium enrichment plant.

The plant was closed in June 2013.

It is thought there is Spanish influence in the name Paducah.

Viper is another unusually named place in the region.

The community was so named because viper snakes were common near the original town site.

Although in times past a local shopkeeper said the name reflected the habits of some of his customers.

Sounds interesting!

Sometimes you can only imagine what them oldies got up too.

Which brings to mind the story of Adam, Eve, the snake and the apple.

A serpent or snake convinced Eve to eat fruit from the forbidden apple tree, she in turn gives some of the fruit to Adam.

When questioned, Adam blamed Eve who then in turn blamed the snake.

And the poor old snake didn’t have a leg to stand on!

From memory there was something else in the story involving a fig leaf.

But we won’t go there so, moving on, if you think the place names mentioned above are strange, how would you feel about being a resident of Booger Hole, West Virginia?

And if you were, what would you call yourself?

Locally we’re proud to call ourselves Ashburtonians, Boogerholeians just doesn’t sound quite right does it!

Or maybe it does.

Perhaps boogerholvegas could work.

And here’s one answer to the age-old question “what’s normal?”

Well Normal is a town in Illinois.

Mind you one is inclined to favour the answer to that question provided by a lady in Hokitika who said “the only thing I know what’s normal is a setting on a washing machine!”

Rock n roll baby!

The cast and crew of the Ashburton Variety Theatre are excited to go ahead with this years show It’s Only Rock n Roll Baby.

The show was planned last year but Covid-19 restrictions forced its cancellation.

Still wanting to go ahead with the show, they were able to retain half of the original cast and held auditions to fill the gaps in the cast.

With a rejuvenated cast rehearsing three times a week, the group are well on the way to be ready for opening night on May 21.

The song and dance show is compiled by Gavin Templeton with the support of musical director Sarah Templeton, and choreographer Jesse Thomson, and is designed to have the audience tapping their feet and singing along.

The Ashburton District’s recycling monitoring programme recorded an increase in contamination in March.

After recording a record low contamination rate of 2.46 per cent in February since the monitoring began in August 2020, the contamination rate increased to 6.94 per cent in March.

Ashburton District Council’s infrastructure group services manager, Neil McCann said that despite the spike in bad practices it hasn’t cost ratepayers yet this year – with each load of recycling being diverted to landfill costing an additional $1000.

In brief ECan LTP Consultation on Environment Canterbury’s draft Long-Term Plan (LTP) will close on Sunday meaning the clock is ticking to make a submission and share your views. ECan is asking for the communities views on the activities and funding being proposed for the next ten years, with the plan proposing two options for consultation, both proposing a notable increase in activity and funding required to deliver it – a 24.5 per cent rate rise for Option 1 and 18 per cent for Option 2.

No decision will be made on the final LTP until after the ECan has received and reviewed submissions from the community, including hearing inperson from those who wish to speak to their submission, and deliberating on all the information and views that are sent in. Hearings are scheduled for April 27, 28 and May 4, with the ECan Council holding its deliberations in a public meeting on May 20.

“Despite the increase in contamination, so far this year, no loads have been turned away at the collection point and diverted to landfill,” McCann said.

In March, waste management contractors confiscated a total of 14 yellow bins, compared to only 10 in February he said.

That takes the total of confiscated bins, under a three strikes policy, to 127 out of out of 11,250 properties, with 27 properties having had their bins returned.

If a bin is removed from a property, the resident has to contact the council to have it returned, and this will only be done after an education process had been undertaken.

There are 175 properties on a final warning (second strike)

and 1278 on their first strike.

McCann said the council continues monitoring activities “with a focus now on properties not already on the watch list, to help capture a wider audit”.

plastics are the most common items we see that should not be discarded in the recycling bins, increasing from 1.36 per cent to 5.58 per cent and from 0.37 per cent to 2.11 per cent respectively [from February to March].”

The kerbside monitoring was introduced after the changes in recycling collection, with only plastics numbered 1, 2, or 5 being accepted, and when a load of recycling is contaminated and rejected it costs ratepayers an additional $1000 to be redirected to landfill.

Comparatively, the Christchurch City Council – which had also previously had its best month in February – improved again with 93 per cent of its recycling loads being approved.

EA Networks Centre is scheduled to host two events this weekend meaning a partial closure of facility amenities to regular visitors. The Main Pool, Learners Pool, Community Room, and Meeting Room will host the Ashburton Swim Team Swim Meet event that runs from 1-6.30pm on Saturday, and from 8am to 6.30pm on Sunday. All stadium courts will also be booked for the Mainland Netball Intercentre Tournament event, scheduled to run from 10am to 4.pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Sewer main Work has begun on installing a pipeline to service the proposed Equus Park Subdivision Development in Methven.

The Methven Trotting Club, owners of the subdivision, have awarded the contract for the Equus Park sewer main installation to Ashburton Contracting Limited (ACL). The new sewer main will be installed along Racecourse Avenue is expected to be completed

by April 23. Due to the sewer main alignment being in the centre of the road, Racecourse Road will be closed to the public between Main Street and Chambers Lane.

NPD Rakaia Construction of the new self-service fuel stop in Rakaia is expected to be completed this month. NPD marketing manager, Rhyce Barker, said that the Rakaia site is progressing well and it is “likely to have the site completed this month but as yet don’t have an opening date pencilled in”.

It’s a privilege to be us

M

ost of us understand the difference extending a hand of friendship can make to another person; imagine then difference that hand could make when it’s extended by a community Life in the Ashburton District is not easy for everyone.

We have many people who struggle to pay for life’s basics, who live from pay to pay, who struggle to cover food and rent from a basic benefit.

But we get by.

As New Zealanders, we understand the Kiwi way of life, we understand how things work, we understand where to go if we need help, guidance or information.

Those things are in our DNA. In every way being ‘us’ is a privilege.

But that’s not the case for everyone living in our community..

Ashburton today is a very different place to Ashburton of 20, even 10 years ago.

We are now truly a multi cultural district.

It’s not uncommon to walk through town and hear many different languages spoken.

We’re much richer for that but for the many people who now call our district home, learning to live in that new home may not have been easy.

Most have chosen to come here, for work, for family reasons and that gives them contacts and links within their new community that make the transition a little easier.

For newcomers without a support network and who may have very limited English language skills, the adjustment to a new life in a new place is huge.

Again, most who make that move, have chosen to leave their home country and make a new life in New Zealand.

Soon we will begin welcoming into our community people for whom leaving the country of their birth was not a choice.

They have been persecuted for social, political, religious or other reasons and have been forced to flee, seeking asylum in another country.

Those people become refugees.

Some are destined to spend many years living in refugee camps or sheltering in cities.

The fortunate are accepted for a refugee programme that opens the door to a new life in a new country.

New Zealand has been part of the refugee resettlement scheme for many years and finally Ashburton has an opportunity to be involved.

This month we were set to be opening

our hearts to the first of our refugee families, it will now be in May. Whenever it happens, those people will have come home and will now be former refugees.

Adjusting to their new lives will take time. They will be face with situations they do not understand.

They will feel lost, they will feel alone and they may often feel despair.

How they adjust to life as members of our community is up to every one of us.

We are their new neighbours, our children will be at school with theirs, they will buy goods in our shops, walk our streets.

They will be one of us.

When our new families start arriving, let’s extend our united hands of friendship, let’s make them welcome, let’s make them truly feel at home.

The quality of their new life experience is in each of our hands.

The term “toilet rooms” fell out of use fairly quickly, having been confined solely to the twenties, in favour of “beauty salons”.

T

rendy hairstyles are always changing, and these days we tend not to think much about how people tend to wear their hair – personal preference is the norm.

Trends do factor in for a lot of young people however; the middle part is gaining popularity among Gen Z, and the classic mullet is pervasive as ever.

There are, of course, plenty of styles that have cultural and religious meaning, and there are also practical reasons for different hairstyles, due to hair type or job demands.

Facial hair is hit-or-miss – it’s all up to genetics, but there is no harm in trying a beard or moustache!

Throughout the history of our young country, popular hairstyles have changed quite a lot to the point where you could have a good try at dating a photograph based solely on the hair of the subjects.

Ashburton, of course, has had its fair share of hairdressers to provide our citizens anything from a simple trim to the latest trendy ’dos.

Let’s look back at popular styles from the past, as well as the men and women who held the razors and snipped the scissors.

Early Ashburton hairdressers On September 23, 1875, an advert started running in the Lyttelton Times expressing the need for a hairdresser and tobacconist in Ashburton.

This advert was put in by Hugo Friedlander, who it appears had interest in such a business initially in Ashburton.

It took two years before Friedlander’s call was answered, and eventually Mr A Pearce took up the Moore Street business in 1878.

Pearce was styled as a “tobac-

Beards, moustaches, and long hair were more common options for men once more, and styles for women became more varied also.

Smaller trends have come and gone several times over the decades, and now you would be hard pressed to spot the same hairstyle twice in a crowd.

This is in contrast to what you would see in nineteenth and early twentieth century group photographs – I have often glanced over such images and seen the same (or very similar) styles on many of the subjects.

No matter how you wear your hair, feel good knowing that we are no longer as constrained by societal norms as we once were in the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Open 9am to 6pm, this “Ladies’ Saloon” catered to all types of styles and treatments. conist, hairdresser, and dealer in fancy goods,” and he also had a billiard room on the premises, which seemed to have been common for the more sophisticated barbers at the time.

Three months before Pearce arrived, E A Garnett had also been practising as a hairdresser, perfumer, and tobacconist in Tancred Street.

Others followed such as A W Weston, who also sold stationery and books – clearly the early New Zealand hairdresser was obliged to offer multiple services to bring in the money.

In those very early days up until the 1880s, big beards and sideburns were looked on favourably, as healthy facial hair denoted a healthy man.

In the nineteenth century, women of European descent wore their hair long and very often wore it up – shorter styles were less common until women started taking up work away from home in the early twentieth century.

Changing styles and toilet rooms As the twentieth century rolled on, beards fell out of popularity in favour of clean-shaven cheeks and fancy moustaches for men (which also became unpopular shortly after).

Styles for women really took off, allowing for more freedom of expression, empowerment, and practicality.

“Waving” was a popular style

for women in the twenties and is representative of the period, having been offered at pretty much all salons at the time, which were once referred to as “toilet rooms”.

The word toilet originates from the Middle French “toilette” which means a small piece of cloth.

Toilet referred to a towel or cloth draped about the shoulders while you were having your hair cut or being shaven.

Toilet rooms such as the establishment of Mrs Monson (also spelled Monsen, Mousen) and the Camille Toilet Rooms in the twenties provided a variety of services to women such as “tinting, face and scalp treatment, water and Marcel waving, shampooing,” and more.

ate Wilkinson was born in Chertsey and will be buried there.

She is so adamant, she’s already purchased her burial plot.

Wilkinson’s Road and the family farm is close by and, since the death of her parents, Joan and Arthur, she’s managed it, leasing it out recently to two nearby farmers.

Kate also owns another farm at Swannanoa.

In the 21-hectare lifestyle block, she has sheep, chestnuts and hazelnuts with five hectares of pine and macrocarpa trees she planted 20 years ago.

“I’ve always had a foot in rural New Zealand. I used to feed out to the lambs at home and, in my uni days, I was a rousie in a Rakaia shearing gang,” she said.

It’s an active life and, even busier, when you list her achievements from the time she left Chertsey School, St Margaret’s College and Canterbury University with an LL.B degree.

“I came from conservative parents who were always supportive of education,” Kate said.

She loved law, she loved words and she loved helping people.

“I wanted to make a difference. New Zealand is the best country in the world and I was passionate about it.”

Law led to politics when she became an integral part of the local North Canterbury community that opposed a youth justice facility proposed for Mandeville, near to where she lives.

“We won and that heightened my interest in the intrigue of politics,” Kate said.

“I was a lawyer and I wanted to be at the start of the law-making process.”

There was no better place than parliament.

She joined the National Party in the 1990s “because it seemed the natural thing to do”.

But offering yourself for selection and being chosen are two different things.

Triumph came after three attempts.

Kate stood for selection in the Rakaia electorate and then twice for the Waimakariri seat before being successful as a list MP in 2005.

“Labour was in power under Helen Clark. You were voting fodder if you were in government. It was a good learning curve and it made me want to be on the other side of the treasury benches,” Kate said.

She quickly made an impression.

When National was elected the government under John Key in 2008, Kate was appointed a cabinet minister with responsibility for Labour, Conservation, Food Safety and Immigration as an associate.

She enjoyed her time in and out of power, but, by 2014, the pressure of politics was enough.

“I wasn’t getting any younger. It was time to get out.”

Her decision not to seek re-election, opened up another chapter in her life.

Kate supervised the management of the family farm and was then appointed by the Attorney General as a Commissioner of the Environment Court.

“I sit on the bench with the environment court judges for resource consent

applications,” she said.

“I do a lot of mediation.”

Kate enjoys it.

“I love mediation because it enables parties to reach mutual and pragmatic solutions.

“It’s what I’ve done as a lawyer and politician, help people resolve their issues.

It’s been very satisfying when parties talk

to each other and an outcome can be reached.”

While Kate was dealing with people and resolving problems, the offer of a lifetime came along.

She was approached to become a Trustee of the Waitangi National Trust Board which looks after the treaty grounds.

A girl from Chertsey was being head-

hunted to look after New Zealand’s national treasure.

“The board was looking for the lone South Island trustee and I was approached. It was a stunning opportunity,” she said.

out of Chertsey, but out of the girl once in their lifetime because “It’s so much part of our history.”

Lord Bledisloe, the GovernorGeneral from 1930-1935, gifted the treaty grounds to New Zealand in 1932 and, in the structure to administer them, he wanted a South Island representative. Kate has held that position since 2015.

“The Board meets quarterly, is integral to the running of Waitangi Day and attends the formalities around the February 6 date,” she said.

She’s rubbed noses with some impressive people, none more so than the future King of England.

“In 2019, I got to hongi both Charles and Camilla.

“He was great and she was delightful. They were easy to talk to and interested in what was happening.”

Now that’s rubbing noses.

But she has one regret.

She’s disappointed that the focus on February 6 is often on the protest side of Waitangi Day and not what it offers.

While politics, the Environment Court and the treaty grounds have taken Kate away from Mid Canterbury, one involvement has kept her close.

Early in her legal career she joined Jaycees.

“I belonged for the fellowship, the community work and the leadership training opportunities.

“It’s where I learned to debate and gave me confidence in public speaking,” she said.

She became an office holder, regional governor and then National

President in 1997.

Three years later she was appointed personal assistant to the World President.

Kate attended four area Jaycee conferences in Asia, Africa, America and Europe, plus the World Congress in Japan.

“I learned political diplomacy and how New Zealand punches above its weight internationally.”

Kate may have had designs for the world title but, under Jaycee rules, she aged out at 40 and could go no further.

However it brought her back to Mid Canterbury.

There was an active Jaycee chapter in Ashburton led by business icons such as Gary Leech, Euan Sparrow, Brian Inch, Colin Wilson and many others and Kate has remained in contact.

“They did great things for Ashburton.”

She is grateful for her upbringing.

“Being brought up on a farm is such a privilege and gave me a grounding in terms of being practical, realistic and prepared to take on challenges,” she said.

At 64, she keeps in touch with her Chertsey School classmates, tries to improve her photographic skills and wants to leave the farm in a better condition than it is now.

“My mind is open to opportunities where my skill set and experience can be of use,” Kate said.

“I’m not retired yet.”

Kate has no need for the burial plot for many years to come.

Kate is passionate about New Zealand and our icon, the kiwi.

Retirement has beco Clarrie’s profession

larrie Brake calls himself a professional retirement consultant.

It’s a title he’s created himself, but it has a serious underlying meaning for him.

Looking back on his life, he’s achieved almost as much in retirement as he has during his business career.

Clarrie has been retired for 32 years which is remarkable and he wants to remain retired for a while longer yet.

At 92, he has a few challenges left and he’s active and healthy enough to achieve them.

His retirement from his own business, C. Brake and Company, Builders and Joiners, in 1989, didn’t relax the pace of his life.

“You’ve got to keep busy and have something for your hands and mind to do,” he said.

While there were hobbies he pursued while still a builder, others flourished when he had time on his hands.

In particular, he wanted to work with wood, a passion he’d developed as a child in his father’s workshop. “It’s only natural I’d progress from there,” he said.

His career as a builder and joiner saw him construct some of the finest buildings in Mid Canterbury.

But now instead of thinking big,

Clarrie Brake studies his wooden carving of Michelangelo, from a self-portrait the artist did of himself. he was crafting small. His attention was focused on pieces of art, furniture for the home, indoor and outdoor features.

He wanted to be an artisan, creating works of beauty by hand.

On a table he designed and built at home, he’s carved these words –

“It’s been my goal in everything I do,” he comments.

While an apprentice builder, Clarrie studied at Canterbury University School of Art and won two architectural scholarships.

He had the design skills as well as genius in his fingers. In addition, he attended a carving course at Methven Summer School.

When you put all the strands together, he was equipped to be a skilled Mid Canterbury craftsman.

He built his own furniture, exhibited his work and accepted commissions.

He became the inaugural president of Ashburton Woodworkers and is now their patron. When it came to constructing their clubrooms at the Plains, Clarrie designed the building.

He loves wood. “It’s tactile, has a fine, warm touch and is compulsory to feel,” he said. “I work with a number of woods and adapt myself to their peculiarities.”

“It’s been an important hobby in my retirement and keeps me off my skateboard,” he quipped.

He moved here from Christchurch 70 years ago to work for Fletcher Construction, building such landmarks as Dalgetys, Allenton School and church buildings among many.

Then through his own company, he built accommodation at Erewhon and Mount Potts Station, becoming impressed with the beauty of our high country.

He had to preserve it with his camera.

ome He started with a Box Brownie at the age of eight and now records the scenes with more sophisticated equipment. His photography of the inland lakes has seen him win national and international awards.

He prizes a Certificate of Merit for a photo of Ashburton Gorge that he won at an Asia Pacific Rim competition.

“Lakes Heron and Clearwater and Rangitata Gorge are special areas. Photography takes you to places that you’d never otherwise go to,” Clarrie said.

“I’m painting with light when I take a photo.”

He’s patron and a life member of the Ashburton Photographic Society and regards the time spent on photography as an investment.

“You don’t notice the cost if you love it,” he said.

His name might be identified with building, wood turning, carving and photography, but it’s also associated with Japanese marathon running. When you think of some of the world’s top long- distance runners training in New Zealand, you think of Clarrie Brake.

It all happened when he was extending Erewhon Station.

As a favour, owner, Arthur Urquhart, asked Clarrie to guide a couple of Japanese hunters through the headwaters of the Rangitata River. They were keen on adding tahr, deer and chamois to their trophies.

One of them, Kiyoshi Nakamura, was also head coach of the Japanese Olympic Marathon Team. To understand him, Clarrie compiled a notebook of Japanese nouns which so impressed Kiyoshi that he asked if Clarrie would host the visit of his top runners to Mid Canterbury.

The connection began. It’s difficult keeping fit in Japan in winter so they came to Ashburton and trained here against the glorious backdrop of Mid Canterbury’s high country. From there they achieved Olympic glory and won some of the top marathons around the world.

“I was everything, host, organiser, liaison, chauffeur and confidant. I learned some basic Japanese and was able to communicate with them. The satisfaction was aligning myself with some of the world’s best athletes and learning from another culture,” he said.

Clarrie and his wife, Aileen, stayed in touch with the coach for many years until his death.

He is a past master of the Thistle Masonic Lodge in Ashburton and drew the plans for the new lodge building in Ashburton. He then became clerk of works during its construction.

But there are two more strings to his impressive bow.

Clarrie was a guide for Atlantic and Pacific Travel during its footprint in New Zealand. He would take escorted tours around the globe, especially the United Kingdom and the USA. “I’d been

approached by a local travel agent and knew my way around the world, especially Japan,” he said.

“It’s part of going forward, you can’t stay still.”

Few people know that Clarrie owns an organ, with pipes and manuals. His grandfather was a pipe organ builder and brought it to New Zealand. It’s one of Clarrie’s prize possessions and is currently in Timaru being repaired.

His love of organs goes full circle. Even before he was an apprentice carpenter and joiner in Christchurch, Clarrie was an organ builder. Back in 1944, he worked for Hill, Norman and Baird, an English organ building company with a branch in Christchurch.

His job was to tune the Christchurch Cathedral organ in the Square and the Civic Theatre Organ in Manchester Street.

“Every Friday in readiness for Sunday services, we would lengthen or shorten the pipes to keep them in tune.

“They could go out of tune in atmospheric conditions such as a nor-wester. If that happened, I’d have to return on Saturdays to tune them again,” he comments.

“I was attracted by the sound they made but, when I had to travel to Melbourne for promotion, I

became an apprentice carpenter instead, working for 17 shillings and sixpence a week.”

While this snapshot of his life began long before his retirement, Clarrie has had more time to enjoy and play his grandfather’s organ in the years since he gave up building.

Later life has been good to Clarrie.

But you can’t do anything without a partner he said. “Aileen has encouraged me throughout our married life.”

They’re both 92 and will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary in 2022.

“We’re both grateful for the lives we’ve spent together, we live in our own home and look after each other,” Clarrie said.

“We don’t have friends our own age, so we rely on the companionship of younger people.”

As a retirement consultant, Clarrie will continue an active life but there’s one further goal he wants to attempt this year.

“I want to write my memoirs when time permits. It’ll be a big operation, but there’s a possibility I’ll start it this winter.”

That’s between taking photos, wood turning, designing buildings, looking after Aileen and playing his organ.

Celebrating the post-partum body

After a traumatic birth, Ashburton woman Jaime McLauchlan came up with a project to celebrate post-partum bodies. She wants to bring joy, unity, freedom, hope and strength to mums all over New Zealand. YOU writer Maddi Gourlay caught up with her over a leisurely coffee.

M

ost women would agree there is a constant pressure for a woman to fit into their pre-baby jeans, as quickly as possible.

After Jaime McLauchlan had her first child, she felt the same pressure. With the added stress of losing her job in the tourism sector due to Covid, it prompted her to focus on her love of photography.

And one of her inspirations was a friend, a new mum like herself. She and Jaime had many talks about their bodies and their insecurities around that after giving birth.

What inspired her, was that despite the negative perception of the post-partum body, her friend still rocked a bikini when she went to the pool. That, for Jaime, was inspiring and brave.

She decided to create a project that showed off other mums bodies and their

stories of post-partum bodies, as many mums do over a cup of coffee.

That’s how the Instagram project started. Celebrate Post-partum Bodies project is a social media photography exhibition.

The first photo up on the page, was Jaime and her own post-partum body.

Jaime has dealt with body image issues throughout her life. Giving birth to her son and the body she developed after his birth, added to those insecurities.

Posting her own photo for the project was emotional for Jaime. Her journey to get comfortable enough to share an image of her body online wasn’t as straight forward as people may think.

Despite having a tough pregnancy, Jaime became confident with her baby bump. But after a long labour, she needed an emergency caesarean. The c-section left a long scar on Jaime’s stomach.

Her body had changed so much over the course of nine months and that scar represented a lot of emotional trauma for Jaime, she had decided ignorance was bliss and refused to even look at it.

“I had been through this traumatic experience and I couldn’t touch [the scar], let alone look at it,” Jaime said.

Getting her husband to check on it and clean it, she had managed to not look at it or touch it for eight weeks.

Going to pelvic physiotherapy regularly after birth, instructor Lesley Coffey, from Essential Physiotherapy, asked the seemingly simple question ‘how are you getting on’?

Jaime broke down in tears and admitted to Lesley she had not even looked or touched the incision. Her body was a stranger to her.

“Your body doesn’t feel like your body for a long time,” she said.

Wanting to help, Lesley gave Jaime an important assignment – every day, she had to practise touching her scar.

It wasn’t easy. Every time Jaime touched the scar it brought back memories of a traumatic birth.

But it was this assignment and her brave friend wearing a bikini that sparked the idea of her project.

“I wanted to start this project as a way for other mamas out there to know they’re not alone,” Jaime said.

Jaime wanted to help women by creating a positive view on the post-partum body.

“It was such a big moment to post that.

It was like here it is, I’m okay with it.

“I’m left with my shelf. My incision has faded along with the trauma. I now have a soft, squishy belly full of stretch marks.

I’m not saying I love it all the time. But I’m slowly learning to accept it. I do love that it created life, it housed a human for nine months and gave me my incredible son Franklin,” Jaime said.

The night Jaime posted the photo of her and her scar on social media, was an emotional moment for her.

She understands other women that get photographed for the project will as well, but she encourages women who go to the studio and get photographed in their underwear and bare all, to display any emotion necessary.

She warns her mums to be prepared, that it’s amazing the emotions you can carry about your post-partem body, but coming to a safe space with like-minded people can be a lot, Jaime said.

Celebrating post-partum bodies is a passion project that will keep Jaime busy, doing regular sessions with mums. Jaime does not charge mums to be in the project, it is all just part of the project.

All photos on the page are from the neck down, displaying anonymity. For women who don’t wish to have a photo on the Instagram page, the story is just as important. Small quotes from other mums stories are also featured.

“If you get emotional that’s fine, I’m not here to judge, I am here to empower you. We are there to celebrate your body,” Jaime said.

Jaime’s goal is for the project to grow, in the hopes of helping anyone who goes through the process of giving birth. The long-term dream is to turn the Instagram project into an exhibition that will hopefully go all over New Zealand.

“I want as many people to see it as possible.

Get the kids in the kitchen FROM JAPAN with Miya Komatsu

S

chool holidays are just around the corner, so maybe it’s time to get the kids cooking!

These recipes are Japanese kids’ favourites, as well as my two little nieces.

Kids can help to crack and beat eggs, mix hamburger steak mixture and stir the jelly mixture.

I hope they enjoy it.

Miya Komatsu is a Japanese-trained chef and nutritionist who has made Ashburton her home.

Omurice (omelette with chicken and tomato rice) 4 servings

Chicken and tomato rice 200g chicken (breast or thigh), cut into small bite-sized chunks 1/2 onion, finely chopped 1/2 C corn (frozen or tinned) 5T tomato sauce 2t chicken stock powder 2T BBQ sauce 4C cooked rice Salt and pepper to taste 1T oil Omelette 8 eggs, cracked into a big bowl and beaten well 4t oil Tomato sauce, for serving

– Heat the oil in a large frypan over high heat. Add the chicken and cook until nicely coloured.

– Add the onion and saute for a couple of minutes, then add corn and cook another couple of minutes.

– Add the tomato sauce, stock powder and BBQ sauce and stir together.

– Add the rice and mix in until the rice is coated with sauces.

– Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.

– Cook each omelette individually. Heat the medium non-stick frypan with 1t oil over medium heat and pour in a quarter of the egg mixture.

– Spread over the bottom of the frypan and slightly scramble the middle without breaking the omelette.

– Turn off the heat and pour quarter of the chicken rice into the centre of the omelette.

– Push the omelette and rice to one side of the pan and fold in the side of the omelette to wrap the rice.

– Hold a plate beside the omelette and tip the pan and flip over the omelette

on to the plate.

– Repeat these steps again for three more omelettes.

– Serve with tomato sauce.

Miya’s hint – You can use ham or bacon instead of chicken.

– This chicken rice is yummy as a sandwich filling. It was my stepson’s favourite sandwich when he was little.

Japanese hamburger steak with mushroom sauce

4 servings Hamburger steak 200g beef mince 200g pork mince 1/2 onion, minced 1 egg 1/2 C breadcrumbs 1/2 t salt 1/2 t pepper Sauce 100g mushroom 1C water 2T soy sauce 1t dashi or chicken stock powder 2t cornflour, in a small bowl mixed with 2t of water

– In a large bowl, put all the hamburg steak ingredients and mix well. Rest 30 min in a fridge.

– Roll the mixture into 8 even-sized patties and fry them in a frypan on medium-to-high heat. Cook both sides to a nice colour. At this point, the middle doesn’t have to be cooked.

– Turn heat down to medium, then add the mushroom, water, soy sauce and stock powder and bring to boil.

– Mix the cornflour mixture again and add to the frypan and stir through cook until the sauce is thickened.

– Serve the hamburger steaks with salad or vegetables you like. Or you can serve with hamburger buns.

Milk jelly 2 servings

1C milk, any kind (I used soy milk ) 1T sugar 1/2 t vanilla 2T water 1t gelatine powder Fresh fruit (or poached or tinned)

– Water in a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatine over top. Set aside to dissolve.

– Place milk, sugar or honey and vanilla in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.

– Add the gelatine to the saucepan and stir until all gelatin is fully dissolved.

– Pour the milk mixture into 2 individual cups or glasses.

– Allow to set in the fridge for 2-3 hours.

– Serve with fruit.

Miya’s hint You can substitute sugar for any sweetener, such as honey.

I

’m by no means a gourmet foodie but I do enjoy and appreciate beautifully and passionately prepared food As tickets for Long Lunch Ashburton, a fundraiser for Hospice Mid Canterbury, were purchased in February, we were devastated to hear of the postponement due to lack of support (come on Mid Canterbury).

Our mood definitely lifted though when The Fine Lion head chef Kinnear Horsburgh and hospitality business consultant Chantelle Quinn announced they would go ahead with a degustation menu at the Fine Lion on March 27.

I have had the pleasure of a delicious lunch at The Fine Lion before so I was excited to join my mother and sister in the beautiful surroundings overlooking our town centre.

Starting off with a tasty espresso martini, the mood was set to indulge the tastebuds with some of the freshest and visually stunning food I have had in a long time.

Our first course was a beautifully presented Ora King Salmon crudo, bruschetta with blood orange and white balsamic, a delicious start and we were excited to taste the next plate.

Horopito Mountain River venison carpaccio, with witloof, blackcurrant and radish was next up.

I love venison and this version was so tender and every mouthful was full of that wonderful game flavour only venison can deliver.

The burst of blackcurrants and the crunch of the radish, the tastebuds were popping!

With the next two courses being dark meat it was time to indulge in a delicious glass of Roaring Meg Pinot (a favourite of the table).

Next to emerge from the busy kitchen was a beautifully plated Smith’s Free Range duck and grilled black boy peach salad.

I’m not a fan of duck to be honest, but I gave it a fair chance and it was very tasty, although a bit too strong for me, but it wasn’t wasted as my duck-loving companions took care of it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The absolute star of the menu for me was the Te Mana Lamb cutlet, with parmesan crumbed thymus parsnip pecorino puree, radish, orange and pea feathers.

So many flavours that complemented each other perfectly.

The surprise of trying sweetbreads for the first time created a few giggles once everyone realised what they had eaten.

I truly cannot thank the wonderful team at The Fine Lion enough for their hospitality, Kinnear for his creativity and Chantelle for her amazing service.

This was truly a very special event to be involved in and if you are given the opportunity to go – try it. Broaden your horizons.

From chaos comes creativity ART LOVER with Melissa Shimmin

nn-Marie Robertson is amazed if not slightly nervous about her first exhibition at The Christchurch Art Show this weekend in Wigram.

She has a very busy job as a health and safety manager during the week and loves creating in her down time.

She experiments with art and letting disorder and hidden action and reaction find its own beauty. “Each piece partly created itself, I just help it seed.”

Ann-Marie says art is for everyone, not just the experts. If you like it then consider it a “good” piece of art. Your opinion counts just as much as the critics.

Using acrylic paints along with other mediums, her favourite way to create is by doing a “dirty pour”, where paint is layered in a container and hung from the ceiling, holes made and let it swing! Hence her business name – Chaos Creates, Art by Ann-Marie.

Warmer, drier homes: weighing up the options

inter is coming.

Keeping your family healthy this winter means keeping your home warm and dry and that means finding the right heating system for your house and lifestyle.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, state that the residential sector has a large number of small consumers and the dominant energy source is our highly renewable electricity system.

Households have a significant impact on peak electricity use when electricity generation tends to be at its least renewable, and most expensive to produce—winter evenings.

That makes efficient heating both a health and economic benefit.

A really good heater in the room you use most makes a world of difference to health and comfort. A smaller, cheaper one is fine for rooms you use less, like a bedroom or study but to heat your home you need to factor in the price. A fixed, efficient heater might cost more but do a better job just make sure it’s the right size to heat the room.

The options available to most people include heat pumps, wood burners, wood pellet burners, electric heaters, and flued gas heaters.

Heat pumps An efficient heat pump that suits your home and local climate is a seriously low carbon option.

They are cheap to run and provide almost instant heat, heating one room, or many rooms if you buy a ducted system.

They can be very efficient and can be controlled with a thermostat and timer settings.

The downside is that they can

be noisy when running at full power and won’t work during a power cut.

Different models suit different rooms and climates – if you live in a colder area, look for one that performs well in low temperatures.

They can be energy efficient depending on the mode, and using a heat pump with 7 stars on the energy rating label generates 77 per cent less emissions than a similar heat pump with only 2 stars.

Dry firewood is low pollution and can be cheap to run depending on who you source your wood from.

They can heats large spaces, and multiple rooms with a heat transfer kit as well as be used for cooking and water heating.

The downside is that they can take a while to get going and temperature control.

TIPS:

Use the timer to warm the room just before you get home and switch off when you don’t need it.

Set the thermostat to above 18 degrees to combat damp and mould but below 21 degrees to save power.

Set it to ‘heating’ mode – ‘auto’ can make the heat pump waste energy by constantly changing between hot and cold.

When it’s really cold, set the fan to ‘auto’. ‘Low’ and ‘quiet’ won’t give you full blast.

Heat pumps sometimes blow cold air during cold weather, to defrost the outdoor unit. This is normal, and it should be back to heating in a few minutes.

During heat pump season, clean the filter with a vacuum cleaner or warm water every couple of weeks. It’s easy and makes all the difference.

Wood burners A clean-burning, modern wood burner makes the most of a plentiful, renewable biofuel.

Wood pellet burners

The same feel as a wood burner with a load of modern convenience.

These burners use pellets made from waste wood and they burn cleanly. They heats large spaces and can heat more rooms with a heat transfer kit or central heating system.

They have onetouch lighting, a thermostat and timer, and can even be used for water heating.

There is no chopping or storing firewood but they do require a small amount of electricity to work.

TIPS:

Building consent is also required for the installation or replacement of a wood burner, and local councils have specific regulations because of air quality concerns. You will need to select an ‘ultra-low emission burner’ (ULEB) in some areas.

TIPS:

Make a sheltered space to store your firewood so it can dry for at least a year – windy and sunny but out of the rain.

Only burn dry, untreated, and unpainted wood less than 11cm in diameter.

Don’t burn household rubbish, coal or salty wood like driftwood.

Get the right amount of heat by using the right amount of fuel, rather than dampening the air control.

Store your pellets in a dry, sheltered place.

Service and maintain your pellet burner according to the instructions for safety, performance and to make it last for years.

Electric heaters There are a number of different electric heaters that provide a climate-friendly way to warm up smaller rooms but you have to watch the running costs.

They are cheap to buy, with a huge range of types and technologies—convection, panel, oil column, fan, micathermic, radiant, infrared—but they are more expensive to run than most other heating options—and are less powerful. They are more suitable for heating bedrooms, studies and other smaller rooms.

TIPS:

Go for one with a higher wattage and a thermostat. You’ll get

   

to a comfortable temperature quickly without wasting energy.

Use a timer to warm the room before you need it – you can buy a separate timer plug.

Put portable heaters on the cold side of the room or near a window – it helps to distribute the heat.

Stay safe – keep heaters away from curtains and anything else that could catch fire. Plug in only one heater per socket.

Flued gas heaters The flue on a gas heater or fireplace sends the toxic fumes and moisture outside.

They provide instant heat and can heat a large space with the added benefit of a having a thermostat and timer.

They don’t need building consent – but must be installed by a registered gas fitter.

The downsides are that they use fossil fuel and release greenhouse gas emissions, have higher running costs for LPG bottles and will not work during a power cut.

Unflued gas heaters are dangerous indoors and can also add up to a litre of moisture to the air per hour.

TIPS:

New Zealand doesn’t have minimum energy performance standards for gas heaters so their efficiency and emissions vary a lot.

Look for the Australian Gas Association gas energy rating label - more stars means it’s more efficient.

Have it professionally serviced once a year to keep it running well.

FUN FACT: According to the World Health Organisation, 18 degrees celsius is a healthy temperature for any room being used – higher for children, the elderly, and people who are ill.

Keeping heat in, cold out

eating options are important but they are only one factor in maintaining a warm and dry home.

The other key factors are insulation, dampness and ventilation.

Insulation Proper insulation makes your home more comfortable, as well as easier and cheaper to heat.

Warm indoor temperatures and adequate ventilation make for a drier and healthier home. The first priority is insulating the ceiling/ roof area, as this is where most heat is lost.

Installing wall insulation is the next most effective step. However, this is difficult to check without removing wall lining or cladding, so take the opportunity to do so if you’re renovating.

You also lose heat through air moving through open doors, windows, unsealed lights down and extractor fan systems.

Exposed glass makes retaining heat more difficult, so make sure your curtains and blinds form a good seal around your windows.

Dampness A major factor in keeping the home warm and healthy for winter is tackling enemy number one — dampness.

A damp home is an unhealthy home.

But it isn’t just that — damp air takes more energy to heat than dry air, so it literally pays to remove moisture from your

home. Moisture makes its way into your home in many ways.

Start by tackling damp at the source with the most common cause being drying clothes, cooking, and showers and baths, Make use of sunshine to dry washing, and use the faster spin cycle in your washing machine. In the kitchen make use of a hood range or extractor fan that vents outside and use pot lids where possible when cooking to contain moisture.

Use an extractor fan when showering or taking a bath, or at least open a window or you can fit a shower dome to contain moisture.

Dehumidifiers can be efficient at removing damp air—using some power to do so but in removing the cool air they can assist in heating the home.

Ventilation In some older homes too little ventilation might not be a problem but modern homes are much more airtight, so natural ventilation is minimal.

Get in the habit of airing your home every day.

Open windows to let a breeze through and vent stale, moisture-laden air.

It seems counter-intuitive to open windows on a cold winter day, but removing moisture makes your home healthier and your heating more efficient.

An automatic ventilation system can be effective and convenient for continuously airing your home. There are two main types, forced air system or a heat-exchanger system.

Preparing your garden for winter

he cooler temperatures of autumn have arrived and so too has the beautiful colourful display of leaves on deciduous trees. It’s another busy month in the garden as we prepare for the colder winter months.

Planting winter vege seedlings April is the favoured month for planting winter vegetable seedlings. Add fresh compost to the vegie plot before planting broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, peas, radish, spinach, swedes and turnips. It’s a good idea to stagger your plantings (called succession planting) every two to three weeks so you have a continuous harvest throughout winter.

If temperatures are dropping at night, put jars or plastic bottles over seedlings to protect them against early frosts – this also helps keep snails and slugs at bay!

Remember to remove any covers in the morning.

Growing winter veges in containers

Below right – Add plenty of compost into your existing soil.

If you are short on space in the garden, grow your vegies in containers and/or pots. Try silverbeet, spinach, broccoli, peas and winter lettuce. Use fresh Daltons Garden Time Container or Potting Mix and make sure your pots/containers have good drainage holes. Place them in a warm sunny, north facing position, away from strong winds. Add a layer of mulch on top to protect the soil.

Planting flowering winter annuals Summer flowering annuals are just about finished. Remove old plants into the compost bin and if you haven’t already, prepare beds for planting with fresh compost. Winter annuals to plant in this month include; alyssum, aquilegia, calendulas, cineraria, cornflower, lobelia, lupins, nemesia, pansies, primulas, snapdragons, statice, stock, sweet pea, sweet william, violas and wallflowers.

Plant up pots and containers for colourful displays on decks and balconies—they will provide a real lift over the dreary, cold winter months.

Preparing the strawberry patch May is the preferred time for planting strawberries so use this month to prepare your strawberry patch for planting.

Prepare the soil and mound areas for

planting above the existing ground level, adding fresh compost and compacting the soil. Remove ‘runners’ from last season’s strawberry plants and keep them in a large container filled with fresh potting mix until they are planted next month.

Fruit tree harvesting Feijoas and early kiwifruit are ripening.

Leave feijoas to fall to the ground before collecting the fruit. All stone fruit trees can be given an end-of-season spray with a copper compound towards the end of April. Peach and nectarine tree pruning can start as their leaf fall has begun. Lemons will be colouring later in the month and can be harvested then.

Ornamental shrubs The first of the winter flowering shrubs

such as camelias will begin blooming.

Garden centres will have new season plants in stock next month, so prepare new gardens for planting now by adding plenty of compost.

End of the rose growing season Just a few rose varieties such as iceberg will be flowering into May. In general, roses are near the end of their growing season and sadly, look their least attractive. Although it may be tempting to start pruning, it’s still a little early as a warm spell can bring about a burst of new growth which could then be damaged by frosts. Continue good garden hygiene such as removing all fallen leaves and dead flowers to help prevent over-wintering fungal diseases like rust and blackspot.

Last month for lawn care A great month for tackling major work renovating existing lawns or laying a new one. It may sound a bit repetitive, but preparation really is the key to success in growing a healthy lawn. With new lawns (or even lawn repair), only import clean, top quality topsoil or lawn soil. Always seek advice about the best lawn type for your property. For existing lawns, apply lawn fertiliser in early April to encourage strong, even growth.

raditionally, peonies are divided in late autumn – a process called root division.

Clumps may actually not need to be divided for 10-15 years after planting.

It’s time to divide peonies when you notice the flowers becoming smaller every year.

Dig the clumps carefully and with a clean, strong, sharp knife, divide the plant ensuring that

each section has significant roots.

Plant the new clumps 40-50cm apart and do not plant too deep, with the crown above ground level.

The soil into which the divided crowns are to be planted in should be well prepared with fresh compost incorporated.

Other bulbs can be lifted in late autumn once the foliage has died off completely.

The reason for this is to protect the plant and ensure maximum nutrients have been stored for the next season’s flowering.

Lift and inspect the bulbs for any signs of disease before replanting into prepared soil as above.

A shot in the arm

accination, vaccination.

Say it fast enough and with some sort of rhythm and it almost sounds like it could turn into a hot potato, hot potato-type lyric for yet another mind-numbing song from children’s music group, the Wiggles.

But this has nothing to do with those colour-shirted wiggly ones. But vaccinations and Covid-19? Yep, that’s a different story. And it’s almost as entertaining.

Because suddenly the Government is facing further Covid-19 scrutiny as it’s tried to manage a border guard virus leak and has then been forced into introducing a temporary travel ban for Kiwis coming home from India.

On top of that, they haven’t been helped by the out of touch move by members of the Auckland District Health Board, who received Covid-19 vaccinations before some of their frontline health workers.

An Auckland DHB board representative tried to justify it by saying members were vaccinated early to lead by example and help encourage the vaccine uptake by staff and that it was safe to have.

Sorry, that just doesn’t wash.

Why could they not work out that public-facing border workers and frontline health staff needed to be first in line in the health hierarchy in terms of getting their Covid jabs?

Until the past few days, the Government itself, including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, has treated getting early vaccinations as an extremely sensitive and cautious matter.

Why? Because they quite clearly know of the very damaging message that could be sent to mere mortals like you and I. Simply, lining up for their vaccinations ahead of more deserving others would reek of queue jumping, which is something those with enough power might just believe they can get away with. A bit like the Auckland DHB has.

What all this has done has highlighted the Government’s increasing wariness of any risk and public backlash as it tentatively rolls out the Covid-19 vaccine.

It’s sitting on nearly 300,000 Pfizer doses just to ensure it has enough stock incoming to cover the entire country in what they hope will be an uninterrupted and flawless inoculation campaign later in the year.

But they need to get their planning and execution right.

They need to give themselves and the public a shot in the arm to show that all is on track.

Of course, the most important shot in the arm will come later for most of us, unless further DHBs follow Auckland’s disappointing and self-entitled lead.

YOUR VIEW Ashburton Bridge crossing How many people realise that the Ashburton River has approx. seven crossings from Highway one to the mountains, NONE between highway one and the coast.

If a bridge was erected at

Boundary Road/Cochranes Road it would reduce the problem at the main road.

If milk tankers to and from Fonterra and Synlait, agricultural machinery transport trucks to Five Star and ANZCO to mention just a few were able to use another route half the congestion would disappear.

All the above equate to 3 or 4 cars.

If a crossing was near Lake Hood residents and users of the lake would also be diverted from the Main Road.

Remember Lake Hood has big plans and these will need to be catered for in the future,

as well.

Currently maize is being carted from Willowby, Eiffelton, Flemington area up to the main road through town to Five Star Feedlot, why not just over the river nearby.

Until a bridge is built to support the rural area Ashburton deservers its congestion.

A bridge too far (off) W

e seem to all agree we need another one.

The question is where and when.

And who pays for how much of it.

Now I’m a broadcaster and a columnist. I hold no qualifications at all in the realm of civil engineering and town planning.

So my comments should only be considered coming from those of an “invested on-looker.”

In other words I’m a local and a likely user. So naturally I have opinions. Like most of us.

I decided to haul my backside out to the recent public meeting called to discuss the proposed location, not so much to speak, but to listen to the arguments from various quarters and keep an open mind.

For those new to the party, an option involving Bridge Street and Chalmers Avenue was deemed the preferred option quite some time ago and I believe various properties were acquired on the Tinwald side to facilitate such a route.

But not everyone agrees it’s the right placement. And that’s what this meeting was all about.

At the end of the night, a show of hands was taken involving three options. Chalmers Ave, a suggested ring road and the third was adjacent to the pres-

I was sitting right at the back and had a good position to scan the entire room. I was flabbergasted that for the Chalmers Avenue option, I only saw one solitary hand raised in a room of reportedly around 150.

Other reports have suggested there were a few more, maybe from viewing front on there may have been some half-hearted hands, but from behind, scanning back and forth the entire room, I counted one solitary hand raised.

The impression I gained was the Chalmers Ave route was definitely not a goer in the eyes of those gathered.

The meeting heard various speakers raise concerns of the dog leg nature of the Chalmers Ave option, plus the myriad schools and pre-schools which could be adversely impacted and the potential further implications of dividing the east into two.

Some considered the town was already divided less than ideally into the East and the

West.

Yet in all that, if I am being completely honest, I saw a little bit of merit in the Chalmers Ave route. And that was really geared at the increasingly difficult situation of eastern Tinwald including the burgeoning and splendid Lake Hood community, getting to town and north.

Anyone who has sat on Carters Terrace wanting to cross the bridge knows it can be an absolute nightmare. Lake Hood residents could find themselves

we already have four lanes through town if you count East Street and West Street.

Why not simply sweep West Street around to a new bridge between the existing and the rail, and head straight down the green strip between Archibald and the railway line right through Tinwald?

Sure I love those trees and the green space too. But needs must. We’d get over it. We have to do something !

West Street – new bridge – Melcombe potentially creates a lot of disruption to existing businesses and car parking, but the option, the blaringly obvious one which I hadn’t really entertained until the meeting the other night, seems the easiest to achieve.

As one speaker pointed out,

I do think you would probably need a railway flyover off West Street to the new road to the new bridge.

And speaking of flyovers, another one out in Tinwald somewhere where the growing eastern Tinwald traffic could effortlessly sweep over the top of the main road and merge to

join north.

Before that meeting I considered two lanes together one direction, two lanes the other.

But I’d keep the West and East streets just as they are now.

With the added bonus that if one bridge became blocked, the other still has two-way traffic.

I’ll leave it to a much smarter brain than mine to manage how the traffic all reduces to two lanes again somewhere just south of Tinwald.

The one thing I took away from that meeting is that the need to plan well ahead is paramount.

Maybe in another 50 years we will need that ring road as well.

As one speaker pointed out, it’s not just a 10 year plan that is needed, but a 50 year and a hundred year plan as well.

And if like me, you have an opinion, don’t just sit there, SUBMIT, SUBMIT, SUBMIT. What do we need?

“A second bridge.”

When do we need it?

“Yesterday.”

here is a spark and a buzz to the centrepoint of Palmerston North that surprisingly uplifted me. Boasting a true town centre, framed by The Square, an afternoon stroll through Palmy’s verdant heart laid bare how embracing and embraced the city centre is.

She was cranking. Shoppers flocked along the wide footpaths grazing from the inviting retail offerings, locals enjoyed a languid autumn picnic or indulged in games on The Square’s vast grassy carpet, while kerbside buskers revved up the ambience of Palmy’s beating heart.

The Square’s seven hectares are dotted with a plethora of monuments, fountains and artful installations, ranging from the soaring lantern-crowned Hopwood Clock Tower to the glorious Carrara marble statue of Te Peeti Te Awe Awe, the Rangitaane chief who was instrumental in selling Palmerston North to the crown in 1865.

Palmerston North has been unfairly scoffed at and derided by many a passing comedian. Mike Yardley was pleasantly surprised to explore a city groaning with eye-catching art and foodie finds.

That gracious statue is just one of 32 designated installations that comprise the city centre’s eye-catching Arts Trail.

Don’t let the city’s brutalist building binge put you off. Mercifully, they do not get a mention on the trail map.

The city council building would have to be a top contender for New Zealand’s ugliest. Remarkably, this visual atrocity and its soulless Soviet design came up trumps in a civic building design competition in the 1970s!

Grab an Arts Trail map from the i-SITE in The Square and you’ll be able to feast your eyes

on this eclectic array of murals, mosaics, installations and sculptures on a leisurely 90-minute stroll.

The murals along Berryman’s Lane explode in a carnival of colour. I absolutely adore Paul Dibble’s tribute to the memory of the extinct huia, Ghost of the Huia.

Equally commanding is his dramatic work outside the Regent Theatre, where a dainty dancer faces off against the steely gaze of a tuatara. Then there is Numbers, a whimsical, joyful piece, comprised of a series of stainless-steel cubes

joined in a loop, to which random numbers in sheet bronze have been riveted on.

Phil Price’s bright blue wind activated kinetic sculpture, United Divided, is another stand-out as is his majestic bronze sculpture, Pacific Monarch.

Kids love the giant beetles crawling over the walls of Te Manawa, the city’s landmark Museum of Art, Science and History. This cultural heavy-hitter is a storehouse of the region’s story and taonga, beautifully displayed in the Manawatu Journeys gallery. The adjoining Art Gallery showcases a vast stash

of works, with regular visiting exhibitions and a space devoted to emerging talent from Massey University.

Complementing Te Manawa’s treats is the neighbouring NZ Rugby Museum, a compelling shrine to the heritage and glory of our national religion.

It was established 40 years ago as a tribute to the founding father of New Zealand rugby, Charles Monro, who is immortalised in bronze, on the outside forecourt.

Home to one of the world’s largest collections of rugby memorabilia spanning 40,000 items, the treasures include the first ‘fern’, the oldest All Blacks jersey, our oldest rugby ball and Dan Carter’s boots.

Another star feature is the “Have a Go” area, where you can put your rugby skills to the test, from pushing in a scrum and tackling, to sprinting and kicking. Kids love it – I was pretty useless.

Brew Union has cultivated a red-hot reputation as a trendy social nexus. This ebullient industrial themed brewpub boasts 21 taps of NZ craft beers alongside wood fired pizza.

Numbers, a whimsical, joyful piece, comprised of a series of stainless-steel cubes joined in a loop, to which random numbers in sheet bronze have been riveted on.

Colourful Cuba Street has obviously prioritised pedestrians.

Another local crowd favourite is the new He Ara Kotahi Pathway. Primarily developed as a commuter trail, on foot or by bike, its recreational appeal is not in question.

There aren’t many walkways in New Zealand where you traverse dairy farms, forests, pa sites, a military camp, streams and a river in less than nine kilometres, but that’s precisely what He Ara Kotahi weaves together.

Just a few minutes from the city centre, a highlight is the 194 metre long bridge that spans Manawatu River.

It’s a head-turner come nightfall, lustily lit up by luminous spheres. Another charismatic city haunt that instantly seduced me is alluring George Street, a bastion of boutique and bohemian chic owner-operated stores, plus a slew of convivial cafes, like Cafe Cuba, Barista and Moxie’s, which have underpinned its gravitational pull.

Taking its name from the city’s first mayor, George Snelson, it was recently given a touch up as the street of famous Georges, with a George-themed Walk of Fame.

The 35 George St portraits painted in the on-street parking spots include George Nepia, George Clooney, George Harrison, George Washington, and even fictional characters like George Jetson and George of the

Jungle.

Dubbed Palmerston North’s Parnell, the beautifully-maintained character buildings of the street accentuate the precinct’s allure. George Street is currently playing host to a 2.5 metre high bronze gnome, who was unveiled in the city last year, as the latest instalment to Palmy’s sculptural arsenal.

Foodie finds are thick on the ground in the heart of town, particularly along the hospo sweep of Broadway Ave, which beckons like the world on a plate.

My head was spinning as I sized up the myriad temptations but opted to join the effervescent Friday-drinks crowd who flock to Brew Union after work, which

has cultivated a red-hot reputation as a trendy social nexus. It was absolutely cranking.

This ebullient industrial themed brewpub boasts 21 taps of NZ craft beers alongside wood fired pizza, house-pressed burgers and lip-smacking sharing plate options. Add to that, a dizzying array of 100 gins.

I ordered up a Brew Union Golden Ale, which was delightfully crisp with a hint of grapes and citrus, alongside a sensational Buffalo Prawn pizza.

Hand stretched to order, Brew Union’s wood-fired pizzas have a crisp and slightly smoky crust, a chewy bite and artfully topped with super-fresh ingredients. www.manawatunz.co.nz

Skiers shine at nats

The rise of Mid Canterbury water skiers on the national stage was again evident at the recent National Championships, with a number of outstanding results falling the way of the locals.

Competing in Wanganui, a large contingent of members of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club travelled north to compete including a number of younger skiers for whom it was their first trip to the National Championships – and they didn’t let the side down, with great results among the junior divisions.

Again, the Mid Canterbury charge was led by twin brothers Hugh and George Donaldson, who posted some big figures during the week and walked away with plenty of silverware for their efforts.

For Hugh, the culmination of a big year on the water saw him given the

Gold Star Award for the best open overall skier in the country over the season, and some big results in Wanganui helped him get there.

He was runner-up best skier in the country at the championships, picking up the silver medal following a bronze medal in the Open Men’s Tricks, a silver in the Under 21 jumps and a bronze in the Under 21 tricks, which also led to him being named the silver medal winner in the Under 21 division overall.

Brother George was fourth overall in the Men’s Open, claiming a bronze in the New Zealand Open Men’s slalom, while in the Under 21 he picked up the overall title with gold in slalom and tricks and a bronze in the jump category.

After a slow start to the season, George has warmed into his tasks nicelym picking up personal bests in slalom and tricks.

Emily Milner – another of the local stars – was also in on the action, claiming overall bronze in the New Zealand Open Women with a silver in the jumps and a bronze in tricks, while in the Girls’ Division she won gold overall with wins in slalom, tricks and jumps – including a 36.6 metre personal best.

Hugh Donaldson was again a leading light in a major competition, picking up the Gold Star Award for best open overall skier in the country over the season.

The large contingent of Canterbury water skiers and supporters, including members of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club.

Gavin Green, fresh off his New Zealand record setting efforts, was named Men’s Over 65 champion through some great results and he also picked up the Silver Star Men’s Award for the best overall age group skier in the country over the season.

Other good results in the open grade including a silver in tricks to Neil Donaldson in the Men’s Over 55, and a bronze in the New Zealand Women’s Overall for Courtney Donaldson, who set season personal bests in both slalom and jump.

In the junior categories, the junior girls division was a clean sweep for the Lake Hood club with Katrina Wallis winning gold, Genevieve Wallis picking up silver and Harriet Hill grabbing the bronze.

Brothers Jett and Quinn Jansen were also in on the action.

Jett claimed bronze in the overall Junior Boys division while Quinn claimed a personal best to pick up the bronze in the jumps.

Cameron Hill also provided his own personal highlights, picking up personal best scores in both tricks and slalom in his first year of competition.

With the cricket season done and dusted, Guardian sports reporter Matt Markham went through the numbers and came up with a Mid Canterbury XI from the South Canterbury, Canterbury Country and Ashburton College 1st XI for the season. Here’s the team, in batting order.

Angus Jemmett (Ashburton College)

Another exciting youngster stepping into the spotlight, Devon Flannery’s allround abilities make him a must have for any side. Playing in the tough Youth Cricket 1st XI competition, he’s proven his worth both with the bat and the ball.

A logical include in a side that should be well balanced by his inclusion.

BAT: College: 10 innings, 269 runs, Average: 29.89.

BALL: College: 54 overs, 199 runs, 11 wickets at an average of: 18.09.

As arguably the most exciting cricket player to come from this district in a long time, Angus Jemmett picks himself. A solid man at the top of the order, with the ability to bat for time when required, or push on if the tempo needs lifted, he’s a gifted batsman. But Jemmett is no one trick pony, he’s very good with the ball in hand too.

Manpreet Hakkla (Allenton)

BAT: 7 innings, 160 runs, Average: 22.86 BALL: 52 overs, 155 runs, 15 wickets, Average: 10.33 One of Allenton’s star all-rounders this season, Money – as he’s known, works his way into most squads. Down the order a bit from where he normally would sit in a batting line-up, he’s more here as a bowling option – but there’s that Tim Southee-type feel about his potential influence with the bat.

Karmjeet Singh (Allenton)

BAT: 10 innings, 207 runs, Average: 20.70 Allenton’s own version of Mr Reliable, Karmjeet Singh provided a clear head and a drive to succeed for his Allenton side all season. Not a prolific run-scorer, but a good steady opening bat who can occupy the crease and deliver when required proving strong stability. Excellent behind the stumps with the gloves as well so grabs the keeping spot in our season XI.

Richard Print (Tech Stags)

BAT: 8 innings, 116 runs, Average 19.33 BALL: 85 overs, 396 runs, 17 wickets, Average: 23.29 One of Mid Canterbury’s elder statement these days, but still an excellent opening bowling option. Quick, tactical and aggressive, Print’s the guy you want coming on to ruffle a few feathers early doors, and then to install a bit of fear into rivals late in their innings when the tail is beginning to wag. A big hitter of the ball, so can add valuable runs.

Des Kruger (Tech Stags)

CAPTAIN BAT: 12 innings, 457 runs, Average 38.08 BALL: 12 overs, 72 runs, 1 wicket, Average 69.00 Does this guy really need any explanation? Not only was he solid as a rock for the Tech Stags all season, he also delivered in the green and yellow of Mid Canterbury. Experienced, a cool head under pressure and a good tactical mind, Kruger’s getting the captaincy nod in this line-up too because we know he’ll lead from the front.

Alex Hooper (Tech Stags)

Des Kruger personified excellence on the cricket pitch all season.

Ryan Bell (Tech Stags)

BAT: 12 innings, 286 runs, Average 26.00 BALL: 119 Overs, 505 runs, 19 wickets, Average 26.5 Although he’s high up the batting order, Ryan Bell offers plenty as an all-rounder. What elevates him up to No.4 in the batting line-up is his ability to bat time when needed. He’s not afraid of putting the head down and just getting on with it.

Dangerous with the ball in hand and capable of tying up one end, he’s a definite must have.

One of Mid Canterbury’s more explosive players, there’s plenty to like about Satwant Singh’s season. Taking into account that he only played half of Allenton’s matches, his numbers make for good reading, and on more than one occasion he was the sole reason the Allenton side got home. A good player to have in the middle order.

Arguably the bolter of the squad this year, we just like everything we see of Sam Clark – both with the bat and the ball. A call-in for the Tech Stags on a number of occasions, he made his moments count, scoring runs and grabbing wickets. Unsighted for good parts of the season, but really impressive when he was there.

Very good at the top of the innings, he’d work well in tandem with either Print or Singh, and collectively the three-pronged pace attack would trouble plenty who stood in front of them.

Mana Singh (Allenton)

BAT: 6 innings, 23 runs, Average: 5.75 BALL: 67 overs, 257 runs, 14 wickets, Average: 18.36 An all-out workhorse, Mana Singh also deserves his spot in the XI. Asked to bowl a lot of overs this season, he kept charging in and grabbed wickets freely – and most importantly, when it counted. Big and tall he offers an intimidation factor to the squad and his passion for the game makes him a really good fit.

Mana Singh would offer some zing from the top of the order.

Club rugby kicks off Today marks the official start of the 2021 Club Rugby season.

Five Mid Canterbury based senior sides will do battle with their brothers from North Canterbury and Ellesmere in the Country Combined Competition. MATT MARKHAM caught up with each of the five local squads to talk about the season ahead and find out just where each side is heading into today’s opening round of the season.

Taking some of the old but also bringing in plenty of the new.

With a new coaching duo, close to a dozen new faces into the squad and a fresh approach to how they tackle the game of rugby, Southern are in a positive mindset heading into the season.

Club legend Jon Dampney and Richard McClea are at the helm of the side for 2021, and are out to try and bring some new aspects to the traditional Southern style of rugby.

“First thing we’ve done is bring the average age down,” Dampney laughed.

“There’s a good core squad of around 28 there that we are working with and some really exciting new faces too, so we’re in a really good space.”

With three decent hit-outs during the pre-season under their belt the side are now ready to play a bit of proper rugby, and put into practice all the key learnings they’ve obtained during the off-season and build-up to this weekend.

“We haven’t tried to re-invent the wheel or anything like that, but the focus has been on adding a few new elements to the way we play to complement the existing stuff and bringing in a new mindset.

“It’s nothing major, but just small things that should make our game even better.”

Southern begin their campaign today at home against competition heavyweights, Waihora – a task not lost on Dampney and the squad – but one they are keen to welcome with open arms.

“Honestly, I think we’d rather play a side like them now, it’s going to be a good opportunity to see where we are at and get a good hit-out under the belt.

“The focus this week has been on execution, it’s let us down a couple of times in the pre-season games, so we’ve been really targeting that area of our game this week and there’s been some really good improvement in there.”

In Pool B, which consists of Methven, Prebbleton, Waihora, Lincoln, Rolleston and Celtic, getting early points on the board is going to be key to advancing through the season, and the confidence exuding from Southern suggests they might be the team to look out for

If there’s a target on their back, Methven don’t want to know about it.

Defending Watters Cup champions, heading into a massive year for their club who celebrate 125 years this year, and boasting a squad of players who are keen to build on a great year in 2020 – there’s plenty to like about life.

But for coach Simon Fleetwood, who has been joined by Willy Tahuri this season, what’s happened in the past and what might happen in the future aren’t the key focuses.

It’s week to week, and controlling what’s

in front of them.

“You can get caught up in a lot of that, and for the right or wrong reasons we haven’t really focused on what we want to achieve this year,” he said.

“It’s more about taking it game by game, this competition is pretty ruthless.

“The first three weeks are the most important because you don’t want to be chasing finals spots late in the competition, you need to be coming out firing.”

Bringing forward a largely similar squad to last year, Methven have had an extensive pre-season focused on fitness and

improving the small percentage things in themselves and their game to try and give them an edge.

And heading into today, Fleetwood is a happy man.

“We’ve done a lot of work, we’re just ready and really excited to play a bit of rugby.”

The side will be able to call on a number of experienced players for guidance throughout the season.

Matthew Groom and Brenton Connell will lead the side, but they’ll have the likes of Matt Stone, Jeremy Lewthwaite, Tyler

Blackburn and Tiger Holmes as a part of their leadership group too.

They’ll need all of them today though, with the Prebbleton side a formidable foe first-up.

“They’re a good side and we will have to be ready for them because they’ll want to be up in our faces.

“I want us to stand and repel that though and really make an impact which I know we can do.”

With a big celebration and a reputation to live up to, Methven are in for a big season on the paddock.

It’s been a big few weeks for the Celtic Rugby Club, but things are hopefully only about to get bigger.

After a huge weekend of celebrating their centenary, the senior side get the opportunity to rest up this weekend with the bye in the opening round before beginning preparations for a round two clash with Waihora next week.

And for Matt Winter, who’s at the helm of the side with former Watters Cup winning captain, Danny Hurley – the bye isn’t the worst thing in the world.

“We’ve had a pretty extensive build up with a lot of work done by the team, so the bye might have come at just the right time to let them recharge a bit before we get stuck into our work,” Winter said.

Boasting better numbers than they’ve had for a number of years, Celtic this season have been able to select a squad, as opposed to playing whoever is available, and that’s allowed for some healthy competition which

has brought the best out in their players.

“It’s been really good for everyone I think, unfortunately some really good players have missed out, but we’ve got a very strong squad of players – a youthful squad, but a strong one.”

The success of Celtic’s age group sides in recent years is evident in their squad, with a number of players still eligible for colts stepping up into the big time where they will be able to play alongside the experienced members of the team, who will this season be led by Hamish Finnie and Nathan McCloy.

“There’s some young guys in there, but they are there because they deserve to be and are good enough to play seniors, so it’s exciting to see them getting a crack.”

Winter and Hurley have called in their own big guns too with Dwayne Prendergast filling a coaching assistant role to help the pair through the season, and having a man of his knowledge alongside them is going to be really beneficial.

The Celtic season begins next week against Waihora – a tough task, but one the side is looking forward to.

With celebrations now over, it’s time to get down to work.

Rakaia

If the platform was set last year, then Hampstead are ready to make it their own in 2021.

After a number of years struggling through seasons, the popular club took a step forward last year and showed that they are capable of beating any team on any given day – and bringing more of that approach to their game plan this season is high up on the list of priorities.

With a solid base of groundwork done behind the scenes before some positive pre-season hit outs, the side are ready to step up to the challenge of the Combined Competition again today but what happens on the paddock today won’t define the rest of their season.

“It’s a lot about self-belief and setting the tone for how we want our season to go,” Will McCormick said.

“We had a good year last year and we came together as a team and as a club and that’s really exciting for the future, we’ve got a group of players who are really keen to be a part of it and see the continued growth in our senior side.”

McCormick and his fellow coaches have worked hard in the off season in breaking up the week-to-week trainings by introducing a number of new aspects to their training and it’s been well received with good numbers.

“There’s the usual juggles of working life and that can make things difficult at times but you can’t fault the commitment of the guys, they’re doing everything they can to be ready for the season.”

That season starts today against a formidable Southbridge side who are always a tough challenge, especially when they’re at home.

“It’s always tough when you go over there, they are such a strong team in the competition always but for us, it’s basically just our first game of the season and we want to go out there and do our things well.

“If we don’t get the result that’s fine, we turn our focus to next week.”

McCormick said they allowed the squad to select their leader this year, and Maukie Otukolo was the players’ choice to captain them for the season.

With a good core squad of players, many of whom were part of the rejuvenation last year there’s only promising signs coming out of Hampstead and it’s going to be exciting to watch it all unfold.

There’s been a changing of the guard at the Rakaia Domain.

As rugby sides so often encounter, Rakaia are this season entering what can only really be described as a transitional phase in their history. A time where they have bid farewell to some passionate and dedicated team members who for years have made up the nucleus of their squad and in the same breath welcomed in a new wave of talent to their squad as they look to continue their proud history in the Country Combined Competition.

Yes, it comes with some hesitations for coaches Kyle Gray and Andrew Letham, who has stepped into a coaching role this year but there’s also an air of excitement around the next generation of players stepping into the mix.

“It’s a largely different squad to what we’ve had in the past, largely just through natural attrition really,” Gray said.

“But what it’s meant is that those guys who for the last few years have considered themselves the younger members of the squad are now stepping into senior roles

and are being asked to lead the way.”

It’s been a busy pre-season with plenty of trainings and some physically tough encounters in matches, but Gray said what he saw was progression from one game to the next and that’s what he was after.

“I’m really happy with where we are at considering. When you have a big shift in squad like we’ve had you nearly start again and work towards things, so from each game to see the guys improve has been really encouraging. The boys are really excited about the season ahead of them, it’s different with the change in format, it’s now a sprint competition really – you need to start well and get those points on the board.”

Today Rakaia jump on a bus and head up the main road to Hornby to kick start their season and there’s plenty of hope for a strong beginning to the season.

“It’s going to give us a good line on where we are at, all the things we’ve been working on sort of come to fruition when you begin the season so it’s exciting to get to that point.”

No matter what the result today though, you get the feeling that perhaps by the time the Watters Cup rolls around later in the season, the Rakaia which greets their fellow Mid Canterbury team will be a team to keep an eye on.

An opportunity, just ripe for the picking.

That’s the approach the Mid Canterbury United Football Club will be taking when they walk out onto the Ashburton Domain for their fourth-round clash in the New World Championship Football competition today.

Thus far, not much has gone right. But the Mid Canterbury lads have been playing well just without that little brushing of luck that sporting sides so often need to get themselves over the line.

Last week they were humbled by the competition-leading Waimak United side, losing 0-4 – but this week they go to the other end of the spectrum and take on St Albans Shirley FC at home in Ashburton.

And it’s a match they’ll be out to target.

St Albans sit at the bottom of the stand-

ings after three weeks of the competition – on the same number of points as Mid Canterbury United, but with a greater goal differential, so the locals will be out to make the most of what sits in front of them.

With a strong squad of players at their disposal, chasing down those first competition points today will be paramount, and that will require the side to produce a solid all-around the paddock effort if they are to achieve the goal.

Players like Luke Martin and Millar McLauchlan will need to lead from the front and set the platform for the remainder of the side if they’re to make things happen.

Before they take the pitch, the Mid Canterbury United Reserves side will step out and also face St Albans Shirley FC in the curtain-raiser match. There’s some really encouraging signs in the reserve side this year and they’ll be keen to get their first win of the season on the board as well.

A jewel in Mid Canterbury’s crown

W

hen dreams were first harboured of seeing a nationally-renowned sporting complex built in Ashburton that could host big level tournaments and events like other major areas around our country, who would have thought that the EA Networks Centre would get to this?

From its humble beginnings and long-standing tale of success, the centre has become the beating sporting heart of this region, with many teams, individuals and collectives from around New Zealand travelling from afar to compete within its four walls.

Sure, it doesn’t have a hydroslide, and if you’ve ever tried to park in there when something is on, you’ll know all to well the car park needs to be a bit bigger, but the EA Networks Centre’s stature as a venue of sporting excellence

is growing by the week.

Take this week for example.

As well as all it’s normal functionalities and events, the centre hosted a high-level college basketball match last night, and then it will turn into a bustling hub of activity today and Sunday when netball’s Inter Centre competition is held alongside the Ashburton Swim Team’s event, Ashburton Splash.

With huge numbers expected to attend both of the latter events, it’s just a win-win for our district.

Not only are they coming and enjoying having the use of our wonderful facility, but they’re also staying in our motels, eating in our restaurants and enjoying what Mid Canterbury has to offer.

Seeing more and more of these events rolling into town and using that excellent sporting domain is just a great vindication for the vision and foresight that led to it coming to sit in our district.

And long may it continue.

Ashburton hosting top skaters

Skaters from across Mid Canterbury – and potentially further afield – will get a chance to show their skills this year when Ashburton Skate Jam is held in May. The Ashburton District Council, in conjunction with the Ashburton Youth Council this week announced that on May 9, Ashburton will host its very own skate jam event at the Ashburton Skate Park in between East and West streets.

Organised by the Youth Council, the event will coincide with Youth Week 2021 and will be run

by Cheapskates Skate Skool who are New Zealand’s longest running Learn to Skate programme based in Christchurch.

The group run skate events across the South Island and can boast having taught more than 25,000 youth to skate in a safe and fun environment since they began in 2010.

As well as encouraging existing skaters to come along to the event, organisers will also provide free gear hire for any potential newbies to come along and

give the sport, which is part of the Olympics now, a go.

“We want our young people to get out and try something new or just have fun learning new tricks,” Ashburton Youth Council chair, Michael Baker said this week.

“This event is all about youth and it’s completely free so that everyone can take part.”

It’s the second time the Youth Council have hosted the Ashburton Skate Jam with the last event in 2019 also acting as the official reopening of the skate park following influential and renowned Christchurch artist, Wongi Wilson, working his magic on the surrounds of the park bringing some new colour and a fresh new look to the well-used area.

Cheapskates were a part of that event too and Baker said having them back was a huge bonus.

“Cheapskates are so good at what they do, and no matter how many tricks you know, the team can always give you some more pointers, we can’t wait to have them here next month.”

Ashburton Skate Jam will be held at the Ashburton Skate Park between 12 noon and 3pm on Sunday, May 9.

Celebration time at Celtic Park

I

f you’re one of those (and there’s a lot of them) who profess to bleed green, then last weekend was the big one for you.

Easter weekend 2021 saw the 100-year birthday of the Celtic Rugby Football Club in Ashburton, and if there’s any club determined to celebrate such an event in suitable fine style, it’s the Green Machine.

More than a year in the planning, under the management of the GrayPower Conglomerate (that would be Darion and Kieron), and put together by a committee of like-minded Celtic folks determined to make it a memorable occasion, they could hardly have hoped that all their hard work would result in such a remarkable – and unforgettable – celebration.

Where to begin?

The clubrooms themselves.

Like every sporting clubrooms in the known universe, the clubrooms get a bit tired, and it was time for a serious overhaul, and the timing couldn’t have been better.

A month ago, looking at the progress made thus far, I reckoned, yeah, this is going to look pretty damn good, a vast improvement.

Wrong, by the proverbial country mile.

The end result from Ross and his merry men is simply nothing short of spectacular.

Over the weekend, the food and drink flowed, as it always does, under the direction as usual of Kev, who again showed his organisational genius, along with his remarkable crew of willing helpers.

On Friday night, there was an auction of special centenary jerseys, and they were in high demand.

Phil McGoldrick was the auctioneer; former Celtic seniors coach, and many would remember his time managing the New Pub. Phil’s good. He squeezed every last bid from the boisterous crowd, and while the top price was fetched for the No. 10 jersey, by far the most popular winning bid was for the No. 8.

There’s been many excellent No. 8s grace the green jersey, but club colossus Mick Hanham stands tall above all of them, and his winning bid met with a standing ovation.

Special moments.

On Saturday night at the official dinner, first order of business was a massive surprise for Donny Summerfield – he became a life member of the Celtic club. Another standing ovation; another special moment.

To the Sunday, and the Easter Mass had quite a few extras in the congregation, as Fr Denis

Nolan was assisted by Fr Anton McLean, who had played against the likes of Greg Prendergast and Mick Hanham back in the day.

There is a truly fantastic choir at the Holy Name Church, and when a young man (wearing white shirt and Celtic tie) moved up the front and produced a stunning rendition of Hallelujah to complement the Easter celebrations, there were quite a few non-dry eyes in the house.

Special moments.

The Sunday session at the clubrooms may have been a bit quieter than the previous two evenings, but that suited the occasion, with so many memories; bus trips, Easter tournaments, Watters Cup wins, Watters Cup losses, war stories from the rugby field and otherwise – so many laughs, so many stories – special moments.

And the entire year of massive preparations were all done under the possible cloud of Covid; at any moment Jacinda could have pulled the plug, destroying the event as so many had been throughout the country.

But she didn’t.

At one point on Friday night, I suddenly realised our bar leaner was populated entirely by brothers and cousins; that’s something special right there too.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, I ran into a sharply-dressed power couple at a local hostelry, looking buzzed but still perhaps a bit nervous – Darion and Kieron sneaking one last quiet reflective minute before the mayhem all began.

In-form jockey Kylie Williams will be out to try and provide the Mid Canterbury locals with a winning start to a huge day of racing from Riccarton today.

Williams, who was in red-hot form at Ashburton during the week, riding three winners on the programme, will jump on board the Bevan and Robyn Wilson-trained Lord Darci in the opening race on the programme.

It’s been a turbulent season in the saddle for one of the South Island’s longest-standing jockeys, with a serious injury early in the season sidelining her for a number of months and then a lengthy suspension earlier this year also seeing her watching from home.

But the time away hasn’t stopped Williams from making her mark – 22 winners from just 151 rides for the season giving her a strong strike rate, with a further 42 placings next to her name

The Gift was freshened after her last start win in the NZB Insurance Stakes and trainer Robert Dennis said she has returned a more relaxed filly.

“She is relaxing a little bit better in her work now, she used to be all gung-ho and wanted to get on with it,” he said.

“After her last start she had a week out in the paddock and had four weeks work leading up to this race.”

While Dennis is looking forward to tackling Showemhowitsdone once again, he said there are also a number of other dangers in the race.

“Showemhowitsdone is there, they have met each other four or five times, but there are other horses in the race as well. There is plenty of competition there,” he said.

“I have got a good jockey in Jacob Lowry and I trust him to ride a good race.”

New year, new team and new era.

Forget what you think you might know about the Ashburton Barbarians Rugby League team from years gone by, because what’s being offered up in 2021 is a whole new ball game for an excited, passionate and determined squad of players and management.

And their journey begins officially today, when they take on Woolston Rams in Christchurch to begin their season in the Canterbury Rugby League Premier Reserves grade.

And just getting onto the paddock today will be a true indication of how far this team is willing to go.

Five weeks ago, there was talk of not being able to field a team.

The call went out and all of a sudden they’re heading into the opening round with a squad of close to 30 – made up of a half a dozen returning names from previous seasons and a whole new swathe of players from around the district.

And head coach, Matt Milne couldn’t be happier, or prouder.

“It didn’t look good there for a while, we were seriously looking at not having a team,” he said.

“But all of a sudden these players just started emerging, and we’re really good in the numbers department and we’re building this amazing team culture as we work toward the season.”

If his players are showing dedication to the cause, then they must be drawing it from their coach, as Milne is making huge sacrifices himself.

He’s now based in Nelson, but is travelling down in the later stages of the week to run the final training sessions and to be there for match day.

With a largely new squad and many new players to the game, some new arrivals to the district and some players who have converted from rugby, there’s no expectations on just showing up and winning – but with the game plan in place and the execution looking on song, Milne is confident of a really strong showing on the field this season.

“Look, it might take us a few weeks to get up to speed with such a new-looking squad, but we are going to win some games,

I know that much – and it’s exciting.”

The entire squad and management of the team has had an uplift as well, with assistant coaches, trainers and a physio coming on board to help for the season – something they’ve never had the luxury of having before.

And there’s even more motivation for the side too.

This year will mark the club’s delayed 10year anniversary.

Celebrations were meant to be held last year but Covid-19 put an end to that.

So, as Milne said, there’s unfinished business for the Ashburton Barbarians this season.

METHVEN

The picturesque Mt Arrowsmith High Country will be turned into a racing venue this weekend when Arrowsmith Thee Races is held today.

The popular event, which consists of a marathon, a lake face trail run or walk, a mountain bike race or ride, a duathlon and a fun run is attended by people from all across Canterbury and the greater South Island. Hosted

by Multi Sport Events, competitors are treated to some of the best highcountry views and tracks available to the public in all of New Zealand.

Closing Day After a really strong and progressive year on the greens around Mid Canterbury, the Hampstead Bowling Club will farewell their season today with closing day on their greens.

Beginning at 2.30pm with a roll up and then a small celebration to farewell the 2020 and 2021 bowls season. Players are encouraged to wear club colours or whites.

Longstanding syndicate back in action

One of New Zealand’s longest surviving racing syndicates will return to the track tomorrow at Methven.

The Strappers Syndicate, which is a Mid Canterbury based syndicate, will enjoy having another horse at the races when Maren Franco steps out for Leo O’Reilly in the fourth race at tomorrow’s Methven meeting to make her debut.

A three-year-old daughter of A Rocknroll Dance, the filly will continue a long line of runners for the group who were first established in 1984 – with Harness Racing New Zealand confirming to the Guardian that only one other syndicate in their records, the Setarip Syndicate in Southland, having raced horses for longer.

The syndicate’s charges have largely been handled by Ricky and Terry May in Methven but other trainers such as Dick Prendergast, Ben Waldron and Brian Saunders have taken care of training duties for them in the past.

But this time around, it’s Rakaia’s Leo O’Reilly and judging by the strong workout and trial performances from the filly, the passionate group of enthusiasts are in for a bit of fun.

Tomorrow won’t be easy though with a big field on debut, a bad draw and shortcourse distance to contend with, but on what’s been seen Maren Franco should give the Strappers group plenty to cheer about if she’s in contention turning for home.

Mid Canterbury Netball is hosting two school holiday programmes this month for youngsters aged Year 3 and 4 and also Year 5 and 6 players. With limited spaces available, the call is going out to any interested players to get registered for the programmes. The Year 3 & 4 programme will be held from April 21 to April 23 and the Year 5 & 6 from April 28 to April 30 at the EA Networks Centre. The programme carries a cost of $50 for the three days and registrations can be made with Mid Canterbury Netball.

Hockey camp Mid Canterbury Hockey are hosting a school holiday camp for players aged Year 1 right through Year 13. Sessions will be held from Tuesday, April 27 through to April 30 with one hour slots for each session with times dependent on age group. Players can attend as many of the sessions as they want with a cost structure built on how many sessions are attended.

Celtic ladies kick off Leo O’Reilly could be in for a productive day at Methven tomorrow.

She could also be a part of what could be a big day for O’Reilly, with four strong chances for him on the programme.

He teams up with Daniel Reardon for two big chances early on in the day with Daggy Lamb and first-starter Alene – both of whom look to be leading contenders in their respective races while he also jumps behind the talented, but enigmatic Judgement Bay for Chris McDowell later in the programme.

her assignment, but she hasn’t proven to be the easiest horse to drive in her races.

Meanwhile, the locals will be hoping to get their hands on the feature of the day the Mt Hutt Woodlands Cup when Last Of The Mohicans lines up for Methven Trotting Club committee men Laurence Hanrahan and Ricky May. The talented pacer was excellent last time out at Addington and is a previous winner on the Methven track.

The Celtic senior women’s side will begin their season today when they take on High School Old Boys at Keenans Road. Playing in the Canterbury Women’s competition, the Celtic ladies took part in the annual grading festival last week. A six-team competition which will be played in a round robin format, Celtic and HSOB are joined by teams from Linwood, Christchurch, Kaiapoi and Canterbury University. Today’s match kicks off at 2.45pm.

SHEARMAN, Robert Paul – Passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep at Haddenham Buckinghamshire in the UK on Saturday, April 3, 2021 aged 56. Paul was the eldest son of Graham and the late JudithAnn Margaret (Judie) (nee Munro) and friend of Winsome and the son-in-law of Mary and the late Hedley Brown. He was the beautiful elder brother of Jane and Jerry, and was a wonderful husband to Hero, and the best dad to Finn, Iris and Cass. His Kiwi in-laws (Fraser and Megan) nieces and nephews (Hamish, Sarah, Quinn and Austin), and UK brother-in-law Hedley will all miss him terribly as will his wider family and countless friends both in NZ and across the world.
