When it comes to Waitangi Day celebrations, it doesn’t get much better than Ashburton’s unique Multicultural Bite Festival.

Throw in the Waitangi on East market and the farmers’ market, offering homegrown produce in the West Street carpark, and there was something for everyone.

From the minute the stalls opened until well into the afternoon, a steady stream of visitors moved through the town’s CBD, tempted by the delectable aromas of ethnic food and the range of arts and crafts on offer.

In her first year as organiser of the Multicultural Bite festival, Louise Duke was thrilled that the hard work of the committee and the volunteers paid off.

“I’d like to say a special thanks to the volunteers, it wouldn’t have happened without them,” she said. “The Emerge Youth Group did the set up and pack down for us and they were fantastic.”

Spilling some of the food stalls into Baring Square was also a successful move, Mrs Duke said.

Celebrity chef Chantelle Quinn spent more than two hours sampling 24 dishes, before finally tackling the difficult task of identifying the three winners.

“It was fabulous – there was such a

diverse range of cultures and food, it wasn’t an easy job,” she said.

Each stallholder put forward what they considered their best dish for tasting, but also fielded questions from Mrs Quinn.

The Best Bite rosette was awarded to the Singapore stallholders for their succulent satay beef dish. The team manning the Aotearoa stall took home the award for the costume best representing their culture, and the best stall overall went to the Samoan Catholic group.

Internet a blessing, curse for schools

While the internet has provided a lot of opportunities for schools, it has opened the doors to cyberbullying and inappropriate access to websites.

Schools around the country, including Mid Canterbury, are increasingly putting more resources into internet safety and protecting their students.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said access to the internet is essential in schools today but systems need to be put in place to monitor it.

The opportunities it provides to learning is invaluable but because of its vast scope of information and the way it changes so quickly schools have to work hard to make sure it is not used in inappropriate ways.

“It puts a lot more work into schools.”

The school’s internet comes through Network 4 Learning (N4L) – a government-provided system used to provide fast, reliable, safe and filtered internet for schools.

They also use another company which specialises in maintaining and managing schools’ computers and networks with their own protections.

Both these enable the school to have as safe as online environment as possible, however, the school also ensure its students are “good digital citizens” and know how to use the internet responsibly whether they are at school or not, he said.

Every student, when they start at Ashburton College, has to do a short internet

course as well as having frequent sessions and talks on safe internet use.

Even with all these systems and filters in place the school has to deal with incidents of cyberbullying and students accessing inappropriate material outside of school.

“When we know if something is wrong … that is getting in the way of learning or students’ wellbeing then we act on it.”

Sometimes they will have a few issues a week, other times none. These can range from inappropriate material circulating among students to bullying on social media following a fight, he said.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said their school has internet safety policies in place and continuously monitors how students use the internet.

“We can receive reports on students’ use.”

The internet should always be used for the purposes of education in a school but there is a potential for inappropriate site requests, he said.

In the past 15 years there has been only one incident of a student accessing a site they were not supposed to and a month without internet use at the school got the message across, Mr Melrose said.

“Internet usage is a privilege rather than a right.”

Ashburton Intermediate School acting principal Judy Jemmett said her school has an internet policy that is issued to all students who have to sign it and take it home for their parents to sign before they can use ICT equipment at the school.

The Waitangi on East markets attracted thousands of people on Saturday.

■ MISSING GLIDER

Glider missing from Omarama A search has been launched for a glider pilot reported missing from Omarama on Saturday night.

The glider was self-launched using a small motor at 1pm on Saturday and was reported missing by Omarama Gliding at 8.20pm, the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand said yesterday.

Eight aircraft and helicopters are now involved in the search.

Vince Cholewa, spokesman for Maritime New Zealand, which is also assisting, confirmed two helicopters and six aircraft are looking for the man.

Two other helicopters, including an intensive care unit with a paramedic on board, are on standby.

An aircraft started searching on Saturday night and had been searching an area up to 120km in all directions from Omarama.

Gliding New Zealand has provided observers for the search aircraft and an advisor at RCCNZ. It is believed more likely the glider was flown towards the West as an easterly wind was blowing.

Two helicopters are on stand-by, one with an ICU paramedic and the other with an alpine cliff rescue team. They will be dispatched when the glider is found.

The glider pilot had not left a flight plan.

He has a radio on board and the last contact was at 2.06pm on Saturday, when the glider was flying at the north end of the Benmore Range.

He is carrying a personal locator beacon, which is manually operated and has not activated.

The glider was not fitted with an emergency location transmitter that would activate automatically.

Fresh from national Waitangi Day celebrations in the Bay of Islands, Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew mingled with the crowd before presenting the winners with their rosettes.

“This is the way to celebrate Waitangi Day,” she said. “This event gets better every year and a credit to the community.”

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay agreed.

“It was a brilliant day,” he said.

“The new organisers and volunteers did a splendid job. Combined with Waitangi on East and the farmers’ market it was a great festive occasion.

“Compared to other places, Ashburton leads the way with our Waitangi Day celebrations.”

Stallholders at the East Street markets also reported brisk trade, with thousands of shoppers passing through during the day.

Five killed on roads Motorists not driving to conditions - and impatience - appear to be the themes of crashes which have killed five people on the country’s roads so far this long weekend.

A 64-year-old Auckland man and a 17-year-old Hamilton man were killed in a crash at Horotiu on Friday night, shortly after New Plymouth man Cornelius Van Der Watt of New Plymouth died after losing control of his motorbike in wet weather.

National road policing manager Inspector Steve Greally said a 23-year-old died at Ohakea after losing control of his vehicle on a bend about 2am.

A fifth person died just before 10am yesterday on State Highway 5, near Napier, after a collision between a motorcyclist and a car.

Last year’s Waitangi weekend road toll was four.

Waikato road policing manager Freda Grace was saddened by the crashes that had occurred in her patch.

Police are calling for witnesses of the double fatal at Horotiu just before 10pm on Friday night.

The 64-year-old man and his 51-year-old partner, both from Auckland, were travelling south in a BMW when they tried to overtake a truck and collided head-on with a northbound Toyota Corolla being driven by a 17-year-old Hamilton man, Mrs Grace said.

Police are looking for the driver of a light-coloured SUV travelling in front of the BMW - and which successfully passed the truck about 500m south of Te Kowhai township - to help them with their inquiries.

“We think the SUV had overtaken the truck and the BMW has gone at the same time and that’s when the crash has occurred.”

Conditions were drizzly and dark at the time, she said.

The 51-year-old woman remains in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital.

In relation to the first of two crashes at the Karangahake Gorge just after 10am, a westbound VW Passat carrying its 22-year-old female driver and two male passengers of similar age appears to have lost control in wet conditions and struck the

barrier and travelled about two vehicle lengths before it overcorrected, crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a Ford Festiva being driven by a 69-year-old Cambridge man.

The 22-year-old and her passengers managed to walk away from the crash, Mrs Grace said.

The Cambridge man was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital and remains in intensive care.

Mrs Grace said the second crash was remarkably similar.

A 19-year-old Hauraki man lost control on the apex of a corner, crossing the centre line and colliding head-on with a car being driven by a 48-year-old man with his 17-year-old daughter in the passenger seat, she said.

Both men were airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries. The 19-year-old remains a critical condition in intensive care, and the 48-year-old man is in a serious condition in the high dependency unit.

Mrs Grace said the crashes were a result of motorists “not adjusting their driving to the roading conditions and the weather”.

Children get sun smart

Merle Leask Kindergarten children are now stylish and sun smart thanks to The Warehouse.

The Ashburton branch recently donated 45 hats to the kindergarten.

Mid Canterbury Cancer Society health promoter Mandy Casey said educating children on how to be sun smart was her main focus and so she approached the business with a grant application, but instead she was told it intended to provide the sun hats free of charge.

Being sun smart at a young age was very important as every sun-

burn as a child increased the risk of melanoma and skin cancer later in life, Mrs Casey said.

From September through until April it is crucial to be sun smart, especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm.

“Wear bucket style hats, clothing that protects you from the sun, SPF30 sunscreen and seek shade,” Mrs Casey said.

“Sunglasses are also an important part of being sun smart as well.”

As UV rays cannot be seen or felt, it is important to be sun smart.

The damage is irreparable, she said.

Olivia’s sold on seed industry

Hinds teenager Olivia Cunneen admits she’s happiest at home on the family’s sheep and beef farm.

And with five generations of farming in her blood it’s not surprising she’s set to spread her wings to embark on a career in agriculture.

“I’ve only ever really been interested in agriculture,” Olivia said.

While she doesn’t discount farming in her own right in the future, Olivia’s immediate plans are to obtain a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Lincoln University and her time at Ashburton College has given her a flying start in her proposed career in the grain and seed industry.

Olivia has studied agricultural science for the past three years, and at last year’s prize giving was awarded the top Year 13 student in her class, repeating her effort in Year 12.

Hard work also earned Olivia the Ashburton Grain and Seed Association’s scholarship and a special award for an optional grain and seed paper.

She admits agriculture as a subject was once perceived at a less academic option, targeting students who intended to enter the workforce directly from school, however that is no longer the case – agricultural qualifications can open doors to a diverse range of professions.

Likewise, the pathway into the grain and seed industry has changed in recent years. In the past most grain and seed agents served an informal apprenticeship, learning the skills on the job.

These days the way in the door is through a four-year degree, with the option of completing an honours paper in the final year. Students planning a career in the industry also study the whole gambit, from soil science to seed breeding to disease and insect control.

Olivia attributes her success at high school and her enthusiasm for the subject to a “really good teacher”, who encouraged keen students to push themselves further and set their sights higher.

“We also did work experience in a seed company and had to keep in contact through the year,” she said.

The experience helped firm up her career aspirations.

The idea of dividing her time between a paddock and an office appeals to Olivia, combining two areas of interest.

Once qualified, she plans to return to work in Mid Canterbury. “It’s a great place to be in this industry, there’s so much happening and the diversity of crops growing here is amazing,” she said.

Streaker nabbed A streaker jumped the pitch barriers and invaded the field during the Warriors clash with Manly at Eden Park on Saturday.

The naked man braved the elements on a rainy day for Auckland to make his dash from the stand, over the barriers and across the field during a pause in the game. To loud cheers from the crowd, the man - who appeared to be wearing no clothes or shoes - ran open-armed past the players and a number of security guards.

He successfully managed to evade an orange-high-vis clad security guard for a time, with a quick sidestep, before he was taken down opposite the goal posts.

Shark spotted There were reports of a large shark swimming off the coast of Mt Maunganui yesterday. Two reports had been received by police of a shark swimming in the Pilot Bay area, Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner said. The first was at 9.30am, when it was reportedly about 250m offshore. While reports of the size and species of the shark varied, Mr Konlechner said, it was thought to be between 2m and 3m in length. “Shark sightings are not uncommon in the area. As always, swimmers make their own judgment whether they choose to share the ocean with its regular inhabitants,” Mr Konlechner said.

Gondola fault traps visitors Christchurch Gondola hopes passengers trapped for two hours yesterday afternoon won’t be deterred from using it again.

The gondola broke down just after noon as a result of a possible faulty grip affecting one of the pod carriages.

It took two hours for mechanical and engineering staff to find the solution and restart the gondola.

The passengers were never in any danger, managing director Michael Esposito said.

“I apologise for the distress and delay for our customers,” he said. “We train and prepare for a number of scenarios with various rescue organisations and emergency services so operationally things [run] smoothly. We refunded those whose trip was disrupted and hope to welcome them back another time.” - NZME

Police in the Mackenzie Country removed the car keys from a tourist couple after they nearly caused a crash. The pair were pulled over on State Highway 8, between Twizel and Omarama, on Friday afternoon. Senior Constable Les Andrew said the officer who pulled them over reported that they nearly caused a major accident. The couple, visiting from Asia, had been driving a rental car.

“It was a near-miss. Their car was taken off them as a result,” Mr Andrew said. “They were forbidden to drive and the rental company were told to come pick up the car.”

Mr Andrew acknowledged that the long Waitangi weekend had been quite busy in regards to traffic incidents in the Mackenzie district.

He encouraged all motorists – both locals and foreigners – to be extra vigilant and patient.

Cash bonus for New World students

Four students won’t have to worry so much about the costs of tertiary education after receiving a $2000 scholarship on Thursday.

Mikayla Lewis, Albertene Hefford, Ruby Wills and Tempany Fiddymont, who all work at the Ashburton New World, were granted the annual Foodstuffs Community Trust educational grants.

Ashburton New World owner Judy Sheppard said the four students were great examples of hardworking and loyal employees. Six local employees applied for the scholarships and four were granted.

The students have to be doing a full time tertiary course and have worked for New World for at least two years, she said.

They have all worked at the supermarket part time while at school and during the holidays.

Having the grants encourages academic students to work there, Mrs Sheppard said.

Mikayla, who has been working at New World for five years, will be studying physiotherapy at the University of Otago. Albertene, who has been at the supermarket for three years, and Ruby, who has been there 2½ years, will both be studying health science at the University of Otago. Tempany has already left the supermarket to start studying travel.

Psychic returns to Ashburton

In just a couple of months, Kelvin Cruickshank will be returning to Ashburton.

Acclaimed psychic Kelvin Cruickshank is making his way back to Ashburton, to reunite people with their loved ones.

His show, Soul Food, sees him tour the country and interact with people on a personal level.

In front of an audience, he is able to pass on dozens of messages from spirits.

Cruickshank said his duty was to educate people, and that was what Soul Food was all about.

“The whole goal is to help families out,” he said.

Having been to Ashburton before, Cruickshank said he found

the town to be pretty laid back and the people accepting and friendly.

Accustomed to dealing with things outside the realm of what most would consider normal, Cruickshank’s job is not as easy as one might think.

After connecting with the other side he can find himself a bit off kilter, exhausted and overwhelmed.

But he loves it.

He said one of his favourite things about his job was not only the contact with spirits but people’s reactions. “[I like] watching when I am reading for someone, they find

peace,” he said.

However, being in contact with a loved one can also bring up a lot of pain.

“It doesn’t always make it easier,” he said.

No stranger to loss himself, the day before this interview one of Cruickshank’s close friends passed away.

Sad, but not wallowing in grief, Cruickshank focused on the fact his friend had lived an incredible life, one that he got to be part of.

Kelvin Cruickshank will be at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Thursday, April 21.

Thousands of revellers have gathered in London for annual Waitangi Day celebrations.

A video posted on the Kiwis in London Facebook page showed a large crowd gathering for a mass haka at Parliament Square.

Police reportedly closed several streets around Westminster Abbey because the crowd was so big.

The event is part of an annual Waitangi Day pub crawl for Kiwis, which has been running for more than 30 years. Several participants were in fancy dress.

The event came under fire in 2012 when a complaint was filed with the New Zealand High Commissioner saying participants’ antics brought “great shame” to the country. Alleged antics included public vomiting and urinating.

Kiwis in London director Clint Heine said he hadn’t heard of any arrests or trouble so far this year.

“I’ve had no feedback whatsoever this year,” he said.

“I would have had a call by now if there was any trouble. We’ve had one arrest in three years. We want to keep it that way.” - NZME

2 T olive oil 400g Tegel Lean & Lite Skinless Thigh Fillets, cut into small pieces 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 green pepper, finely chopped 1 C basmati rice 2 t ground cumin 1 1/2 C chicken stock 1 425g can Mexican tomatoes Salt and pepper to taste 2 T chopped coriander ■ Heat the oil in a medium saucepan. Add the chicken and cook over medium heat until it is golden.

■ Add the onion and pepper and cook for 2 minutes or until the onion is golden. Add the rice and cumin and cook for a further 1 to 2 minutes, stirring, to coat the rice in the oil.

■ Add the chicken stock and tomatoes and bring to the boil.

Cover and cook over low heat

Peace, not protest, marks our Waitangi Michelle Nelson RURAL REPORTER

W

hile discord and protest formed part of Waitangi Day celebrations in other parts of the county, peace reigned in Ashburton.

Cultures from all walks mixed in a kaleidoscope of colour, entertainment and culinary experiences at the Multicultural Bite festival and at the Waitangi on East market on Saturday.

The crowd enjoying Saturday’s entertainment would have been equally at home at the Mangere Markets.

The Ashburton farmers’ and craft markets, set up in the West Street carpark on Saturday morning, was the icing on the cake.

Much has changed since the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 in terms of cultural acceptance and understanding but in Mid Canterbury, that change has been hyper-accelerated in the past 20 years.

Once a predominately European settlement, more than 60 per cent of the district’s population growth is now attributed to immigrants from the farthermost corners of the globe.

While this trend can largely be explained by strong economic growth, our newcomers contribute so much more to the community.

Our schools are now a melting pot of races and cultures, each contributing their unique perspectives.

The same diversity is reflected in many workplaces and there’s no doubt everyone benefits.

From its largely European beginnings, Ashburton is a shining example of a modern multicultural district.

Immigrant communities have reinvigorated church congregations, formed sports leagues and incorporated their own national celebrations into their kiwi lifestyle.

Although Saturday’s events were devoid of protest and discord in the heart of the heartland, it would be wrong to criticise other communities and groups for speaking their collective minds.

Because that’s another great thing about being a Kiwi – whatever our roots, we have a right to express our opinions.

But hurling insalubrious items at politicians . . . many parents must have been caught short explaining the logic of that particular protest.

ummer holidays, including Waitangi Day, offer a chance to escape the crowds and get away from our busy working lives.

Getting away from it all is a quintessential part of the Kiwi summer for many New Zealanders, whether taking a road trip, camping in a remote location, or exploring our beautiful countryside by bike or on foot.

But getting away from it all can have a downside.

We’ve become so connected through our phones that we’ve come to expect high-quality connectivity wherever we go. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, nor

is it the case in most countries around the world.

Our three major mobile network companies provide access to around 97 per cent of New Zealanders but only reach 46 per cent of geographic coverage.

The Government has made big strides in rolling out faster, more reliable connectivity through our Ultra-Fast Broadband and Rural Broadband Initiative programmes. We’re investing more than $2 billion in one of the most ambitious infrastructure builds in New Zealand’s history.

We’re connecting hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders through their smartphones with the rollout of the 4G network and are building or upgrading 541 cell phone towers throughout New Zealand.

But there are still some areas of Canterbury where the call can drop out or you can’t get a signal. We call those areas mobile blackspots.

I’m a staunch supporter of

better, faster mobile connectivity. Living in a rural part of New Zealand means that I understand first-hand the frustrations some communities experience when their connectivity is poor.

It is important to realise that although the Government has stepped in to help improve connectivity across New Zealand, how telecommunication services are provided throughout the country is driven by the private sector and private investment.

The Government has a role in setting the rules, but it’s generally up to providers like Spark and Vodafone to decide what services they will provide and where.

In some areas which are remote or have low populations, it is simply not commercially viable for our mobile network companies to invest.

Before we started rolling out the Rural Broadband Initiative in 2011, Governments had never funded mobile coverage. However, this Government decided

to make mobile connectivity a priority because we recognise the enormous benefits better coverage can bring to our provincial areas.

Since 2011 we have funded the building or upgrade of 541 cell towers to improve mobile connectivity.

Rural cell phone coverage will continue to be improved through 2016 thanks to this first phase of our RBI programme but we know that there remain many rural and remote areas of New Zealand that would benefit from extended coverage.

As a result, the Government has established a $50 million contestable mobile black spot fund with the aim of providing mobile emergency calling, voice and data service coverage plus a further $100 million for improving general connectivity in rural areas.

This funding will go a long way to addressing some of the gaps that exist in key spots.

Working from remote locations is now possible, if you desire.

■ TAIWAN Iman breaks silence David Bowie’s widow Iman has broken her silence on social media for the first time since his death.

The 60-yearold former supermodel posted a simple message on her official Twitter Iman page that read: “Love & gratitude”. The couple were married in 1992, two years after they met. In his last days, Iman posted a series of emotional updates on social media. “The struggle is real, but so is God,” read one unattributed quote posted to her Instagram account on the day Bowie died after an 18-month battle with cancer. The late rock star’s estate will be divided mainly between Iman, son Duncan and daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones.

Rescue teams search for the missing in a collapsed building after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in Tainan, Taiwan.

Pulled from rubble Rescuers in Taiwan have pulled a young man alive from a collapsed apartment tower more than 24 hours after a strong earthquake shook the island.

Emergency crews are still searching for more than 130 people believed trapped in the rubble.

The 20-year-old was identified by Taiwan media as Huang Kuang-wei. He was taken to hospital.

Firefighters, police, soldiers and volunteers combed through the ruins, some using their hands, as temperatures dropped, watched anxiously by dozens of the victims’ family members who wore thick jackets, woollen hats and scarves.

A total of 132 people are still beneath the rubble of the Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building in the southern city of Tainan,

said a city government official surnamed Chen, with all but about 30 of them trapped deep in the wreckage.

The building’s lower floors pancaked on top of each other in the 6.4 magnitude quake and then the whole structure toppled, raising immediate questions about the quality of materials and workmanship used in its construction in Taiwan in the 1990s.

At least 18 people are known to have died in the quake, which struck at about 4am on Saturday (local time), at the beginning of a Lunar New Year holiday, including 16 found in the collapsed block, according to the latest official death toll.

Tainan Mayor William Lai told reporters that rescue efforts were difficult and it could take several hours to clear the rub-

ble to get to where they think some of the people are buried.

“We will focus our resources on the 29 who are closest to the rescuers,” he said.

Authorities said the building had 96 apartments and 256 registered residents, though more people were inside when it collapsed.

Rescuers wearing red and yellow overalls pulled more than 240 survivors from the ruins and inserted huge supports under slabs of leaning concrete as they searched for additional survivors.

Buildings in nine other locations in the city of two million people had collapsed and five were left tilting at alarming angles, a government emergency centre said yesterday.

Three more seasons Orange Is The New Black has been renewed for three more seasons with Netflix on the condition Jenji Kohan remains at its helm.

The renewal is the longest commitment to any TV series in recent times and secures seasons five, six and seven of OITNB, according to Variety magazine. Season four of the series, which is set in a female prison and is the most-watched show on the TV streaming service, concludes on June 17.

Kohan was ecstatic with the deal. “Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things,” she said. She thanked her cast and crew as well as all the “mixers and shleppers with whom I have the pride and honour of crafting this show”. “Three more years! Three more years!” she added.

Syrians flee as Aleppo assault intensifies Russian and Syrian government forces have intensified an assault on rebel-held areas around the Syrian city of Aleppo that has prompted tens of thousands to seek refuge across the border in Turkey.

The assault around Aleppo, which aid workers have said could soon fall to government forces, helped to torpedo recent Syrian peace talks in Geneva.

Russia’s intervention has tipped the balance of the war in favour of President Bashar al-Assad, reversing gains the rebels made last year.

Any hopes of a ceasefire were dampened by Assad’s foreign minister, who at the weekend said it would be all but impossible to stop the fighting while rebels were able to pass freely across the borders with Turkey and Jordan.

Taking full control of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city before the civil war erupted five years ago, would be a huge strategic prize for Assad’s government in a conflict

that has killed at least 250,000 people and driven 11 million from their homes.

Advances by the Syrian army and allied militias, including Iranian fighters, are threatening to cut off rebel-held zones of the city, still home to around 350,000 people, while more than a million live in government-controlled areas.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, foreign minister of Turkey, which has already taken in 2.5 million Syrians, said up to 55,000 were now fleeing to the frontier.

Cavusoglu said the border was open, but at the Oncupinar crossing near the Turkish city of Kilis, which has been largely shut for nearly a year, refugees were being shepherded into camps on the Syrian side.

The local governor, Suleyman Tapsiz, said around 35,000 Syrians had reached Oncupinar in the space of 48 hours.

“Our doors are not closed, but at the moment there is no need to host such people inside our borders,” he said.

Russia denies targeting civilians and says its actions are aimed at shoring up Syria’s legitimate government and combating terrorism. The West and Turkey, which want Assad to step down, accuse Moscow of using indiscriminate force.

But Syria has been emboldened by Russia’s intervention.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem told a news conference yesterday that Damascus would resist anyone who launched a ground incursion into its territory.

“Those (who do so) will return to their countries in coffins,” he said, adding that no ceasefire would be possible unless borders were sealed.

The comments appeared to be aimed at Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, which said this week they were ready to participate in any ground operations in Syria that the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq decided to mount.

Zayn’s Pillowtalk notched up combined sales of 112,000 with 4.97 million streams, according to the Official Charts Company. Zayn Malik left One Direction in March after five years with the hugely successful boyband that was first discovered on ITV television talent show X Factor. Pillowtalk held off competition from Jonas Blue’s Fast Car in second spot while last week’s number one Stitches by Shawn Mendes fell to third place. Bowie has dominated the British album charts since his death in January and claimed top spot for the fourth week as the Best of Bowie compilation - originally released in 2002 replaced his final album Blackstar. - Reuters

N Korea launches rocket North Korea has launched a long-range rocket carrying what it says is a satellite, South Korea’s defence ministry says.

The launch defies United Nations sanctions barring it from using ballistic missile technology.

North Korea had notified UN agencies that it planned to launch a rocket carrying an Earth observation satellite, triggering opposition from governments that see it as a long-range missile test.

It initially gave a February 8-25 time frame for the launch but changed that to February 7-14 on Saturday.

The rocket was launched on a southward trajectory, as planned, passing over Japan’s southern Okinawa islands, Japan’s NHK reported, and appeared to have successfully separated its first stage booster, South Korea’s Yonhap reported.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the launch “absolutely unacceptable”.

Last month, North Korea

tested a nuclear device for the fourth time, although the United States and other governments have expressed doubt over the North’s claim that it exploded a hydrogen bomb.

North Korea is believed to be working on miniaturising a nuclear warhead to mount on a missile, but many experts say it is some time away from perfecting such technology.

It has shown off two versions of a ballistic missile resembling a type that could reach the US West Coast, but there is no evidence the missiles have been tested.

Isolated North Korea says it has a sovereign right to pursue a space program but it is barred under UN Security Council resolutions from using ballistic missile technology.

It last launched a long-range rocket in December 2012, sending into orbit an object it described as a communications satellite.

The mine collapsed when an underground pillar caved in. Begg said all 87 miners who were trapped underground were rescued and brought to the surface.

More Zika virus victims expected in Queensland

Kidnapped Aust woman freed

A child is one of two people who have tested positive for Zika virus in 24 hours in southeast Queensland as experts warn more cases are likely.

The child was diagnosed at a Brisbane hospital after returning from a family trip to Samoa, while tests at a Gold Coast hospital confirmed a woman, who first fell ill in December after returning from El Salvador in Central America, also had the virus.

Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeanette Young says southeast Queensland isn’t at risk despite the two confirmed cases.

“I’m very confident the two people we’ve just confirmed ... are no risk to anyone,” she said.

But authorities said they expect more people to be diagnosed with Zika virus as further detection systems are rolled out.

Those who are infected are instructed not to travel to north Queensland, where the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in that area could bite them and begin transmitting the virus locally.

Zika virus most often only causes a mild illness, though it has been linked to microcephaly, a neurological disorder in which infants are born with undersized heads.

An Australian woman kidnapped with her doctor husband in Burkina Faso by a group affiliated to al Qaeda has been freed, neighbouring Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou says.

Issoufou presented Jocelyn Elliott at a news conference in Dosso, southwestern Niger yesterday and said authorities were intensifying efforts to secure the release of her husband.

West Australian Dr Ken Elliott and his wife, both aged in their

80s, were abducted following attacks in the Burkina Faso capital of Ouagadougou by suspected Islamic extremists on January 15.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said on Saturday it had kidnapped the couple and would release the woman unconditionally due to public pressure and guidance from al Qaeda leaders not to involve women in war.

The circumstances of Mrs Elliott’s release and how she ar-

rived in Niger were not immediately clear.

For more than 40 years, Dr Elliott and Mrs Elliott have operated a 120-bed clinic in the town of Djibo near Burkina Faso’s border with Mali.

They were abducted from the town the same day al Qaeda fighters raided a restaurant and hotel in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, and killed 30 people, many of whom were foreigners.

Stolen zoo tortoise returned A critically endangered tortoise stolen from Perth Zoo last week has been returned to its home after being dumped at a police station in a backpack.

The 10-year-old radiated tortoise was taken on Monday night or early Tuesday morning, with staff fearing for its safety as the creatures are often killed for their shells, which are turned into ornaments and sold on the black market.

A Perth Zoo spokeswoman said yesterday the animal had been dumped at Kensington police station overnight and returned to the zoo after being checked at Murdoch veterinary hospital.

“We’re ecstatic that it’s back,” she said.

More than 3100 pregnant Colombian women are infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus, President Juan Manuel Santos says, as the disease continues its rapid spread across the Americas. The virus has been linked to the devastating birth defect microcephaly, which prevents fetus’ brains from developing properly. There is no vaccine or treatment. There are so far no recorded cases of Zikalinked microcephaly in Colombia, Santos said yesterday. There are 25,645 people infected with the disease in Colombia.

Plane ‘hit by bomb’ A blast that punched a hole in the fuselage of a plane this week was caused by a bomb meant to kill everyone on board, Somalia’s minister for transport and aviation says. One passenger died and two were injured in the explosion on the Airbus A321, operated by Somali company Daallo Airlines. It was forced to make an emergency landing at Mogadishu airport.

United States investigators believe the attack was carried out by Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab, but there has been no comment from the organisation.

Avalanche in Austria Up to five people have been killed in an avalanche in Austria’s skiing region of Tyrol that buried about a dozen people. A police spokesman said several people had also been injured in the weekend avalanche, which occurred in the Wattental valley, about 40km southeast of Innsbruck in western Austria.

Wife faces jail An Italian woman could face up to six years in jail after her husband accused her of not doing enough cooking and cleaning. Her husband made a complaint to the paramilitary Carabinieri police, saying his wife was slovenly, failed to put meals on the table and left their home in a dreadful mess.

Judicial authorities sent the matter to trial. The 42-year-old wife faces up to six years in prison if found guilty of “mistreatment within the family”. The woman’s husband, 47, accused her of “bad management of domestic affairs”. The husband complained for the past two years he had been chronically neglected by his wife.

t’s an adventure that tops the bucket lists of many – embarking on the world’s longest railway line through some of the harshest and most beautiful terrain in the world. Siberia.

Beyond those snow-covered pines you’ll find warm Russian hospitality, abundant supplies of vodka and a generous dollop of sour cream with every meal.

There’s also delicious cuisine from former Soviet republics in Central Asia and the Caucasus, such as charcoal-grilled pork shashlyk and halva.

3. WEATHER While sub-zero temperatures don’t exactly scream fun, standing in the snow at Red Square, surrounded by the Kremlin, the colourful onion domes of St Basil’s cathedral and the twinkling lights of the famous GUM shopping mall can only be described as magical.

The good news is that Russia does coffee and dessert really, really well. The blistering cold gives you plenty of excuses to thaw out with a cuppa and some of the best treats you’ve eaten in your life, like blinis stuffed with apple and drizzled with caramel sauce.

Indoors or on the train, you’ll never be cold. In fact, being inside gets unbearably hot when you’re all rugged up, so layering

is important.

And, if you can handle temperatures of almost 100°C, you can sweat up a storm in a traditional Russian banya (sauna).

4. FRIENDLY LOCALS Travelling in platzkart (third class) on the train is the best way to meet locals, since most tourists opt for second class.

Carriages are open plan with no doors or curtains and each compartment sleeps four, with another two across the corridor.

There are usually two toilets to a carriage, with a samovar of boiling water for tea, coffee and instant noodles (handy, since food on the train is pricey) and a provodnitsa (carriage attendant).

Bring some food to share – it won’t be five minutes before the babushka across from you is plying you with sausages and fruit.

Few locals speak English and they’re incredibly patient with tourists who don’t speak the language.

The language barrier won’t stop them trying to learn more about you, or going to great lengths to help you find your way.

5. SCENERY From the cities to the countryside, the landscapes to the architecture, there’s no shortage of breathtaking beauty in Russia.

clude a stop at Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world. Many tourists experience the lake from the quaint little village of Listvyanka where you can devour smoked Baikal omul on the shore while taking in the view.

It’s also worth visiting the lake’s largest island, Olkhon, with its picturesque cliffs dotted with shamanic sacred sites and offerings.

In Krasnoyarsk, further west, the trees of Stolby national park display every shade of green imaginable while the historic town of Suzdal, near Moscow, with its countless examples of Russia’s famous onion dome churches, looks like something out of a fairytale.

And after passing through all those little Siberian towns and cities, the grandeur of European Russia will leave you gobsmacked – Moscow with its incredible Red Square and dazzling metro stations and St Petersburg with its Venetian-inspired canals, bridges and opulent palaces.

6. OFF THE BEATEN TRACK The Trans-Siberian railway is by no means a secret yet to be discovered by the masses but travellers, particularly tour groups, tend to make the standard stops (Irkutsk, Yekaterinburg, Suzdal, Moscow, St Petersburg).

Veering off that well-worn path you’ll find barely any tourism infrastructure and you probably won’t bump into another tourist for weeks, but you’ll hang out where the locals do and those places deliver some of the best experiences.

The city of Perm doesn’t come highly recommended by the guide books, or fellow travellers, but the friendly people we met there left us with some of our best memories from the entire trip – from the women at our hotel who would worry over how cold our hands were whenever we came back from exploring and put on afternoon tea to warm us up, to the couple who drove us to our destination even though it was out of their way when we asked them what bus to catch.

7. PRICE The Russian rouble has been through some tough times of late which is great news for travellers, with one New Zealand dollar currently buying 49 roubles.

Food, accommodation and transport are incredibly affordable regardless of the exchange rate and while prices do rise as you approach Moscow, they’re still reasonable.

Budget travellers can find good, cheap food at Soviet-style self-serve canteens and although hostels are thin on the ground in smaller cities, more are popping up.

Taxis are significantly cheaper if booked by a hostel/hotel. - AAP

In brief Ko crashes in final round Lydia Ko’s progress at her opening LPGA event was ominous for three rounds before she showed an uncharacteristic fallibility. The world No 1 began with a pair of 69’s then 67 to share a two-stroke lead with Ha Na Jang going into the final round. Then Ko’s game unravelled like it has seldom done.

Whatever the cause, Ko’s game was ragged in the final round with the teenager signing with a double bogey, five bogeys and four birdies for an untidy three over 75. That left Ko tied for third.

Errors disastrous in final The Warriors have failed at the final hurdle in the Auckland Nines, beaten 22-4 by the Parramatta Eels in the decider.

Considering the occasion, it was an awful performance.

The Auckland side had done well to make the final - after coming close to being eliminated by the Broncos - but got major

stage fright in the decider.

The Warriors were their own worst enemies, coming up with poor errors which constantly saw them trying to fight their way out of their own territory.

Parramatta was superb, almost flawless, but also benefited from the bounce of the ball and the generosity of their opponents.

The Warriors suffered a nightmare start, being caught out by a towering midfield bomb from the Eels. The home side let it bounce - always a cardinal sin and Bevan French ran through to dot down in the bonus zone.

By the fifth minute the Eels had scored their second try.

The Warriors needed to re-

spond, and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck stepped his way through to dot down near the posts. However Johnson missed the conversion, and the Warriors faced a steep 11-4 halftime deficit.

They never looked likely in the second half, and two more Eels’ tries gave an embarrassing look to the scoreline.

Watt’s dream over in split-decision defeat

Sam Watt: back to rugby

Boxer Sam Watt’s dreams of representing New Zealand at the Asia and Oceania Olympic qualifiers in March were dashed in a valiant split decision loss to Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Nyika on Saturday.

The 24-year-old went in to the south Auckland showdown as the underdog, but produced a fine effort against one of the division’s rising stars.

Watt planned to fight on the inside, in an attempt to restrict Nyika’s pinpoint jab, and had success sporadically throughout the three-round bout.

Heavyweight Watt believes being awarded two rounds by one of the judges may have been generous, but felt he tested the 20-year-old Hamilton fighter.

“I reckon the split decision may have flattered me a wee bit,” said Watt.

“He’s very good at controlling his distance and the ring, but I managed to hit him with some good shots, that’s the most people have seen him tagged up.”

Despite the defeat, Watt said he enjoyed the fight and was proud of his efforts with the limited recourses at his disposal.

“I just wanted to fight, and I really enjoyed myself,” he said.

“He does this full time.

“I’m just an accountant who chucks the gloves on occasionally and plays a bit of rugby.

“I know he knows that he was in a fight.”

Watt will now turn his attention to his club rugby season with Celtic, but will endeavour to return to the ring to prepare for the South Island Golden Gloves in May and the Nationals in July.

“I’m going to concentrate on rugby at the moment, playing well for Celtic and hopefully try and make the Heartland team again,” he said.

“But I’d probably look to get back in the ring in April.”

With their season on the line and facing a double-digit deficit, the Breakers showed just why they can be called defending champions for another week at least. Level heads and an electric final quarter lifted the Kiwi club to another crucial victory yesterday, recovering from plenty of adversity to edge Cairns at the NSEC. Scare for France A late long-range penalty from Jules Plisson salvaged a scarcely deserved 23-21 victory for France against Italy in the opening match of Six Nations tournament yesterday at the Stade de France. Underdogs Italy dominated the early exchanges and deservedly went ahead on eight minutes through a Carlo Canna drop goal. Italy were denied a first ever victory at the Stade de France when Plisson landed a monster penalty with five minutes remaining to seal the hard-fought 23-21 win.

Buckman injured The Highlanders have paid a musical tribute to fallen team-mate Richard Buckman after the wing suffered a serious shoulder injury on Saturday night. The Super Rugby champions lost 45-38 against Dan Carter’s Racing Metro in Hong Kong, with Buckman hurt while scoring in the corner in the first half. He was taken to a local hospital and Highlanders lock Joe Wheeler led an emotional tribute the team titled ‘The Barracuda”.

In brief Guptill unwanted The Indian Premier League auction has again proved its unpredictability. Martin Guptill, listed as one of eight marquee players on the back of recent performances, was overlooked by the IPL franchises. His reserve was set at five million rupees ($111,000) but there was no interest when his lot came up.

He did not receive any bids during the second stage of bidding either, leaving him without a contract.

The news came as a surprise, given Guptill’s clean hitting took him to the most ODI runs (1489) in the 2015 calendar year.

England go two-nil up Alex Hales fell one run short of a century but did enough to set up a five-wicket win for England over South Africa in the second one-day international at St George’s Park.

The victory gave England a two-nil lead in the five-match series after a game where batsmen from both sides struggled to play fluently on a slow pitch. South Africa made 262 for seven and England needed a late flurry of strokes by Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali to reach the target in 46.2 overs.

Coldstream downed Allenton and Methven toppled Tech in the second week of the Muirhead Rosebowl senior cricket competition on Saturday.

Coldstream dealt Allenton a six-wicket defeat to end Jeff Naish’s side’s recent run of fine form.

After losing the toss, Allenton were sent in to bat and were all out for 106 in 28.4 overs.

Tom Dudley was dismissed by Bo Houston for a solitary run, but fellow opener Naish top-scored again for Allenton with 24.

Jordan Bird and Tom Hayman

both walked for nought after being removed by Richard Print, and, other than Sean Strange’s contribution of 10, there was little resistance from the middlemen.

A wagging tail boosted Allenton’s total, however, with Kody Stuthridge recording 21 not out while youngster Scott Punselie posted 14 to push Allenton on to 106.

Print was the most economical of the Coldstream bowlers with two for seven off eight overs in another fine display with the ball, while Deon Biggs (two for 13 off three overs) was also in fine form.

It took Coldstream 22.4 overs to chase down Allenton’s total at the expense of four wickets.

Dan McLoy (20) and Jay Houston (17) made quick inroads before being removed by Strange (one for 24 off six) and Punselie (three for 40 off nine) respectively.

Bo Houston (8) was the only Coldstream batsman not to make double figures as Jonno Print (16), Aftab Naika (16 not out) and Richard Print (20 not out) pushed on to 107 for four in 22.4 overs.

In the round’s opposite fixture, Methven produced the weekend’s upset against Pritchard Shield winners Tech.

Methven were sent in to bat after losing the toss and were all out for 152 in the 42nd over with Elliot Nicholson (38) top-scoring, but it will be Tech’s innings that the Methven faithful will remember.

Fifteen-year-old Richard Turpie, who is in his first season of senior club cricket, played the role of chief destroyer, taking five for 29 off 7.3 overs in an emphatic bowling display to see Methven through to an 85 run victory – their first since November 2.

Next weekend will see Methven host Lauriston and Allenton entertain Tech while Coldstream have the bye.

Similarly, New Zealand lost four for 53 in 12 overs to go from 181 for two to 234 for six in the opening match.

That mini-slump was concealed by the 100-run third-wicket stand between Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls, and further decent hitting from No.8 Santner

(35 not out from 39) to take them to 307 for eight.

Elliott contributed 21 off 18, Anderson 10 off 20 and Ronchi 16 off 26.

A similar instance occurred in the first of two ODIs against Pakistan when New Zealand went from 70 for two to 99 for six in the space of 40 balls.

If New Zealand reinforce that area of their innings, so at least out of one of Elliott, Anderson and Ronchi frees his arms in the last 10 overs alongside Santner, Milne and Henry, they will generate every chance of a memorable victory in Hamilton.

That would provide the perfect entrée to sate the appetite before the two-test series.

Super Bowl set to go The Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos gathered at Levi’s Stadium for team pictures yesterday after proclaiming themselves fit and raring to go for Super Bowl 50.

Carolina had a key question mark heading into the final week’s preparation for today’s NFL title game in Pro Bowl linebacker Thomas Davis, who broke his right arm in their conference game two weeks ago against Arizona.

Hawks into semis The Illawarra Hawks booked a semi-final berth after prevailing 104-97 in an overtime thriller against the Townsville Crocodiles on Saturday night at WIN Entertainment Centre. Illawarra’s 16th win of the season assured them of a top four finish, regardless of the results of the final round. After leading for most of the game, the Hawks fell behind late in the fourth quarter before three straight three-pointers by Cody Ellis, Kevin Lisch and Kirk Penney tied the game at 89-89 with 19.5 seconds remaining. The Crocodiles had little to play for other than pride, but they patiently followed the game plan and went perilously close to springing a shock upset.

Dexter on a roll Champion reinsman Dexter Dunn, pictured left winning the Sapling Stakes with second favourite Pacing Major, was in imperious form at Ashburton on Saturday, winning six of the 11 races on the card.

In brief Big win for Smolda Smolda’s pacing career was dangling in the balance last season but on Saturday night he won his second Group I in three weeks to give Mark Purdon his first win in the $500,000 Hunter Cup, and in track record time. Smolda has now won a Len Smith Mile, Ballarat and Hunter Cups and placed in the New Zealand and Auckland Cups in the last year to take his earnings past $1.3m.

Smolda may get a chance to boost those earnings if he contests next week’s Miracle Mile at Menangle.

Hat-trick for mare The Diamond One earned herself a slice of New Zealand racing history on her home track on Saturday when she completed a magical hat-trick of victories in the Gr.3 White Robe Lodge Handicap. While the six-yearold is not the only three-time winner, she is the first to complete the feat in successive years. The outstanding Grey Way claimed the feature mile in 1976 and 1977 and he was also successful in 1979.

Perfect day for Leicester Leicester City capped a superb day with the re-signing of striker Jamie Vardy shortly after dispatching heavyweights Manchester City as they charge towards an unlikely Premier League title.

The news on the England striker completed a great Saturday for Leicester fans, still ecstatic following the 3-1 win at Manchester City that left them five points clear of Tottenham at the top of the table.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be fighting to achieve something special,” Vardy said.

The 29-year-old sensation of the season, whose rise from minor league obscurity to Premier League stardom has captured the imagination of a Hollywood scriptwriter, has agreed to a new three and a half year deal that will keep him at the club until June 2019.

Media reports estimate the contract will earn Vardy, the league’s top scorer with 18 goals, $NZ162,000 a week.

Defender Robert Huth scored twice and Algerian magician Riyad Mahrez fired his 14th league goal of the season as Leicester sent a clear message of intent to those who still doubt they have the quality to become champions.

Manager Claudio Ranieri’s men have been crunched in to $2.75 by bookmakers to win the EPL after starting the season at $5000.

“We have to try in this crazy league but there are some big teams who have to win,” said Ranieri whose side face Arsenal next weekend.

“The spirit is fantastic but I’ve said this from my first moment here in Leicester.”

Leicester’s energy and attacking verve proved too hot

Poor marking allowed Huth to convert Mahrez’s free kick after three minutes to rock the home team who struggled to respond in rain-lashed Manchester.

Mahrez then showed why he, along with team-mate Jamie Vardy, should be a leading contender for Player of the Year honours when he doubled Leicester’s lead following a swift break, taking N’Golo Kante’s pass to advance and fire the ball past Joe Hart.

Fifty-four young players competed for age-group honours in the Mid Canterbury Junior Championships at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Saturday and yesterday.

Spectators were treated to a consistently high level of tennis throughout the weekend from Mid Canterbury’s budding tennis talents.

Lachlan Adam and Mitchell Veix were the best of the boys’ under 10 doubles while Harry Dargue and Tyler Leonard proved

too strong to take boys’ under 12 honours.

With just two teams contesting the boys’ under 14 doubles section, Sam Bubb and Josh Jones made light work of Neil Alombro and Henrik Tawatao (6-0, 6-0).

The boys’ under 16 category boasted plenty of talent, but the formidable partnership of Connor Brosnahan and Flynn Ness were in exceptional form.

Ness and Brosnahan downed Bryn Looij and Nic Thomassen 6-1, 6-1 and Dallas and Liam Scott 6-1, 6-0 to be crowned under 16 doubles champions.

Ness and Brosnahan would later go head-to-head for the boys’ under-16 singles title in an exciting encounter, which Ness won 7-5, 6-3, while Looij and Thomassen finished third and fourth respectively.

Sam Bubb continued his dominance of the boys’ under 14 singles, conceding just two games throughout his three matches, while Harry Dargue and Lachlan Adam were the best of the boys’ under 12s and 10s respectively.

With no under 16 contingent this year, the under 14s were the most senior of the girls’ doubles

and the dynamic duo of Erin Connelly-Whyte and Tessa McCann took the doubles title convincingly.

Connelly-Whyte and McCann saw off Jade Brosnahan and Maisie Looij 6-1, 6-2 and Millie and Sophie Ness 6-1, 6-2.

The girls’ under 10 and under 12 doubles both hosted two partnerships with Felicity Pye and Victoria Talbot taking out the 10s and Sophie Innes and Lydia Pye winning the 12s.

McCann was untroubled to take out the girls’ under 14 singles, downing Talbot (6-1, 6-0),

Sophie Ness (6-0, 6-1) and Millie Ness (6-0, 6-2), while Sophie Innes and Felicity Pye took out the girls’ under-12s and 10s respectively.

Mid Canterbury junior convenor Peter Leonard said the tournament was a resounding success, with plenty of support for the young players.

“The level of tennis was outstanding,” he said.

“There was plenty of support from parents and families, and all the games were well contested with plenty of sportsmanship on show.”
