4000 skiers make Mt Hutt history

Mt Hutt experienced the biggest day in its history yesterday, with more than 4000 on the mountain.

Conditions were so good, with over 75 centimetres of fresh powder snow and fine weather, that traffic was backed up for several kilometres, and cars were turned away when carparks filled up at 11.10am.

“We are really sorry if you have missed out on skiing and riding today but once our carparks are full, the mountain really is at capacity,” management said on the ski area’s Facebook page.

Earlier in the day people took to social media to vent their frustrations at being stuck in traffic, as cars stretched as far as Route 72 down Waimarama Road around 9am. Some lost patience and turned back.

The access road re-opened at 1.05pm when carpark space became available again, and more people turned up eager to get in an afternoon’s skiing or riding.

Manager James McKenzie said about 2pm yesterday that cars were still coming up the mountain, and the ski area would open for a half hour extra to ensure everyone had an opportunity to enjoy the fantastic conditions.

The number of more than 4000 had eclipsed the ski area’s previous record of about 3500 on July 9.

Mr McKenzie said it was not new for Mt Hutt to be busy on days with fresh snow and fine weather, but expanded carparks at Zed Creek, Rakaia Saddle and the information booth had added capacity this year. A shuttle bus ran from the information booth and took up about 500 skiers.

Snow causes havoc

Phone lines are out in the Hawke’s Bay, roads closed in the central North Island and black ice causing problems in the south but there’s also plenty of fun to be had for those hit by the cold this weekend.

For many the snow has been a chance to get outside and enjoy snowfights, tobogganing and a range of creations from snowmen to snow crocodiles.

Aucklander Cooper Rich, 4, was hard at work at the base of

Mt Ruapehu yesterday making snowmen, where Kyle Spencer, 6, enjoyed a snowfight with his dad Craig Spencer during a family holiday.

The gloves and scarfs were replaced last night with heaters, hot water bottles and warm pyjamas as temperatures dropped to as low as -11 in some parts of the country.

Cold air and clear skies will be responsible for the drop in temperatures with most of the South Island expected to go below zero.

Severe overnight frosts were expected throughout most of

the country with motorists being warned to take care on roads and watch out for black ice.

Auckland and Northland were expected to stay above zero last night with a low of 4 degrees, but Waikato dropped to -3 and Taupo -5.

Rain is expected mid-week for Auckland, eastern Northland, and the Coromandel and well as eastern parts of the South Island.

There has been major damage to the network in the Taupo plains with Unison advising that power could be out for up to a week and that residents of the area need to

take preparations. Due to the recent snow and ice, poles are down across the Taupo Plains, affecting just under 200 rural customers in the area.

“We advise these customers to look at their wider support networks and make arrangements where they can, including reaching out to rural support services and welfare support,” said relationship manager Danny Gough.

“We will be liaising with Civil Defence to co-ordinate the response, and look where generators could be used.”

“Based on the current informa-

tion we have, customers could be without power for about a week,” “We are getting in touch with our peers across the industry to get support from crews in other regions as we plan what is going to be an extensive restoration effort.”

Where to find the sun today: Most of the South Island will remain dry and although still experiencing cold temperatures, the sun will come out. Most of the country will stay dry, however rain clouds in Fiordland may see a few showers in Southland and possibly South Westland later. - NZME

4000 skiers make Mt Hutt history From P1 About three quarters of skiers and snowboarders yesterday were season pass holders. The first-tracks product had been popular, with more than 400 skiers and snowboarders paying extra to access the powder from 8am. The skifield opened for regular pass holders at 9am.

Mr McKenzie said winter had now arrived in earnest at Mt Hutt, with wall-towall skiing, and all terrain opened.

Meanwhile, cold and snowy conditions on Friday and Saturday provided harsh conditions for farmers and livestock during calving and lambing, and made conditions difficult for motorists.

As snow started to fall heavily in Methven around 5pm on Friday, the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a truck experiencing difficulty on Route 72 north of the Rakaia Gorge. Firefighters, attending alongside colleagues from Hororata, directed traffic around the truck which was partially blocking the road.

EA Networks network manager Brendon Quinn was pleased to report the forecasts for snow “did not come to much” and there were no related power outages.

Mt Hutt skiers stuck in traffic made the most of their waiting time and applied chains yesterday.

Long membership brings reward

Helen Clark Helen Clark is thought to be considering whether to withdraw from the contest to become the next UN Secretary General after a disappointing result in a second informal ballot.

The former Prime Minister slipped from sixth place to seventh place out of 11 candidates.

Clark hinted in a tweet she would be reconsidering her candidacy: “Disappointed by outcome. Will discuss over coming days.”

Foreign Minister Murray McCully said any decision was entirely over to Clark.

It was clear from the increase in “discourage” votes for almost every candidate, that once a country had decided on a first preference, they had tried to discourage others to advantage their first preference.

Clark had not been the first preference of enough countries to date.

“It doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t emerge from the discussions that will occur much later

on as a very viable compromise candidate - which was always the only way she could come through this,” McCully told the Herald on Sunday. “But the numbers are unflattering.”

Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres remains well ahead in the informal ballot count.

Clark’s “encourage” votes slipped from 8 to 6, her “discourage” votes increased from 5 to 8, and “no opinion” votes have gone from 2 to 1, according to figures leaked to Foreign Policy magazine.

When asked if the Maori Party’s public criticism of Clark in the past week may have had any bearing on the results, McCully said “none whatsoever”.

“What we have got here is a very strong series of tactical plays where, once you’ve decided who you want, you try and finish off the others and Helen Clark hasn’t been No1 for enough countries around the council table in the polls to date.”

Pulling teeth and pushing paper are two completely different professions, but Ashburton’s Ted Wood believes they actually have a lot in common.

The retired Ashburton dentist has received a recognition award for 50 years of membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s an honour,” the 82-yearold said yesterday, as he reflected on just how valuable his accountancy training had been.

Mr Wood said he had never planned to become an accountant, but undertook training when he was already working as

a dentist in Dunedin. He studied five years part-time, attending lectures 7am and 6.30pm.

He established Edward J Wood Dental Surgeon in Ashburton after moving to the town in 1964 with wife Pearl. And he was able to join the chartered accountants’ organisation, then the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, in 1966 after completing his professional examinations.

Mr Wood said his accountancy training had been of huge value to him in his Ashburton dentistry practice, which he operated for 42 years. It had also helped in the many community roles he had undertaken, including on

charitable trusts and as an Ashburton local body councillor for 18 years.

It was a qualification he felt fortunate to have achieved, and it would have been more difficult today, involving higher tertiary level study over a longer timeframe.

And despite dentistry and accountancy being totally different professions, there were also similarities, he said.

“The professional responsibilities are still the same for an accountant or a dentist. The nature of the work is different of course, but the professional responsibilities are more or less the same,” Mr Wood said.

Ambulance dispatched from Darfield Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade members attended a medical callout as first responders early yesterday, and had to wait about 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

Spokesperson Tyrone Burrowes said ambulances usually came from Ashburton or Leeston, but

they must have been busy, as one was sent from Darfield.

Brigade members assisted the male patient, aged in his 70s, who had breathing difficulties.

A St John spokesperson said the brigade arrived on the scene at 12.53am Sunday. Available resources were busy with other in-

cidents so the ambulance from Darfield was dispatched and arrived at 1.40am.

“We have a co-response with the fire brigade and so our clinical desk was in contact with fire to assist them until the ambulance arrived,” the spokesperson said.

Money well spent on seating The Ashburton Stadium Trust was handed a fundraising target of $5 million for the EA Networks Centre and through community support it turned around and raised $6 million.

The last of that money has now been spent – $339,000 for concertina seating and $22,000 on anti-glare blinds.

And that means that more than 1200 people will be able to sit in comfort and watch the action when big ticket sports matches or concerts roll into town, said stadium trust chairman Maurice Myers.

Money for the seating came from a grant from the Lion Foundation and from the last of the money in the trust’s account, he said.

The new concertina seating is capable of holding 966 people and with base seating already in the stadium and corporate seating, up to 1300 people can be accommodated, courtside, he said.

“This will now create good opportunities and they’re there for the life of the stadium.”

The seating and blinds basically wrapped up the trust’s fundraising campaign, Mr Myers said.

The second patient was airlifted at 11.48am, also in a moderate condition.

Violent attack Police have confirmed a Nelson man suffered a “very violent attack” which led to his death. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston said a post mortem on the body of John Murray ‘Muzza’ Morton was completed in Christchurch on Saturday and confirmed they will now be treating his death as a homicide. “The number and nature of Mr Morton’s injuries suggest a very violent attack and the investigation team is determined to piece together exactly what happened,” he says.

A car has been left dangling in a tree just metres from the home of Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith after it was allegedly involved in a chase with police. Smith posted pictures of the car’s precarious predicament on his Facebook page, saying the car had earlier smashed through a safety barrier and taken out his letterbox. Writing about the hair-raising incident, Smith said the “boy racer problem hit home last night”. He alleged the driver was “drunk as a skunk”. The man only suffered minor injuries.

Craft fair successful despite cold weather

A person died after their car flipped and became submerged in water in Rotorua shortly after midnight on Saturday. A Fire Service spokeswoman said they were called to the incident on Tarewa Rd about 12.10am. Two people were trapped in the vehicle. The Fire Service was able to free one person, but the other died at the scene. The spokeswoman was unsure of the gender or the deceased or if they were the driver.

The two-day fair at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall attracted shoppers from throughout Canterbury.

raiser for the year, and generally raised up to $3500. It was quiet on Saturday due to bitterly cold conditions and snowfalls throughout the day keeping many at home.

But beautiful weather on Sunday saw shoppers turn out in high numbers.

Stallholders had been committed, with three travelling from Dunedin and Invercargill despite the conditions.

Two local rising stars prepare to perform

Written by one of Ashburton’s rising stars and starring another, Her is a play about how many women experience life.

Georgie Sivier originally wrote Her while she was attending drama school, but left it for a few years while she focused on writing more comedic plays.

She came back to it and decided it was worthy of a public performance.

Miss Sivier has also just wrapped up two weeks of filming a new TV sitcom pilot in Christchurch.

Ruby Donaldson recently returned from the World Championship of Performing Arts, where she was competing as a singer and an actor.

While there, Miss Donaldson won two acting scholarships, one to the New York Film Academy and one to the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts.

Miss Sivier said her last couple of plays have been “ridiculously

funny and not very believable” while this one is much more realistic.

The pair will be performing Her at the Senior Centre on Friday and Miss Donaldson said they both work better when there is some time pressure.

Dozens of fabric hunters, including Judy Thornley, turned out despite the weather as Ashburton Altrusa’s Fabric and Craft Bazaar kicked off on Saturday morning.

Convenor Helen Hooper said about $6000 was taken on the day, which was more than expected considering the snowy and cold conditions.

“We got there early and thought

– do we cancel or not?” she said, but with customers beginning to queue up one-and-a-half hours before opening time at 10am, they decided to go ahead.

ruce McIlroy’s Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost started life as the car of Kenyan royalty.

Mr McIlroy’s Silver Ghost was first manufactured in 1922 in Massachusetts and, in 1929, was imported to Kenya by the Kenyan royal family to serve as the official royal vehicle.

The Silver Ghost served the Kenyan royal family until 1935, when it was sold and became a safari car.

In 1960, the man Mr McIlroy brought the car from found the Silver Ghost in the Kenyan bush.

He had a new body built for the car in Nairobi, before he flew himself and the car back to England in 1970 and when he immigrated to New Zealand in 1990, he brought the Silver Ghost with him.

Nine years later, an opportunity arose for Mr McIlroy to purchase the Silver Ghost and he grabbed it with both hands.

“I have probably done about 60,000 or 70,000 miles in the car since I purchased it, so I’ve driven it around quite a bit,” he said.

One of the most memorable trips Mr McIlroy said he has had in the Silver Ghost was the 2013 Rolls-Royce Centenary Alpine Trial.

Mr McIlroy said he and his wife drove 4500 miles across England, France Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovenia in 2013.

“The drive took about four or five weeks to complete,” he said.

Mr McIlroy also took the car to Napier earlier this year for the art deco festival.

As well as owning his own Rolls-Royce, Mr McIlroy is also the proprietor of the South Island’s only Bentley and RollsRoyce restoration and service yard.

It began when Mr McIlroy brought his own 1952 Bentley. More and more people began asking him to service their Bentleys and in 1995, he opened his yard full time.

Mr McIlroy said the Silver Ghost garners some attention when he takes it out for a ride.

“When you stop, people come up to you and talk to you about it,” he said.

“Especially when you pull up at a petrol station.”

eeping up with what is happening in the world of sport is easier for some than others.

Unfortunately I am in that others category, and generally end up dreaming off and thinking about something else when the sports news comes on.

Enter the Olympics, that fouryearly international event which seems to transcend everyday sport.

With competitions featuring a multitude of disciplines it is easy to tune in when you get a moment, and catch up on at least some of the Olympics action.

It provides a sporting extravaganza which can be experienced both nationally and globally.

The opening ceremonies are in a league of their own, and are generally amazing spectacles where the whole world comes together and each country is able to revel in a show of national pride.

As such the Olympics this time round provided a perfect platform for a powerful message, on the issue of climate change.

Eleven thousand seedlings, one for each Olympian, will be planted in an athlete’s forest. It may seem gimmicky to some, particularly as Rio fell 30 per cent short of its target to treat 80 per cent of sewage in Guanabara Bay by the start of the games.

But climate change is more than a political issue to be considered individually at a national level, it is a problem which we are united as human beings in having to deal with as we move into the future.

Strategies to improve our housing supply M

any New Zealanders are concerned about housing and housing afford-

ability.

As a mother I hope that my kids will one day be able to own homes of their own and I know that a lot of other parents want the same for their children.

Over many years, we’ve seen a number of factors combine to boost housing demand and push up prices.

These factors include low interest rates, growing incomes, more jobs and a rising population on the back of our strong economy.

The solution lies in building more houses and building them faster.

The Government recognises this and has a comprehensive programme to help make this happen.

For example, we’ve created more than 200 special housing areas across New Zealand to speed up the development of land for an estimated 70,000 new homes.

We’re reforming the Resource

Management Act to make it easier for councils and developers to get houses consented and built.

And we’re freeing up surplus Crown land for new housing.

Around 40,000 more people are working in the construction industry than two years ago.

And there are currently 42,000 apprentices being trained.

We are seeing results. Across New Zealand, building activity is at an 11-year high, with more than 28,000 housing consents issued in the year to May. That’s double the number of five years ago. We’re on track to build 85,000 new houses in this term of Parliament.

To put that in context, it’s nearly twice the number of exist-

ing houses in all of Dunedin.

In addition, the Prime Minister has announced new initiatives to help speed up supply in highgrowth areas facing the greatest housing challenges – Queenstown, Christchurch, Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland.

A new $1 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund will help bring forward the new roads and water infrastructure needed for new housing where financing is a constraint.

The Government will invest up front to ensure the infrastructure is in place. Councils will have to repay the investment or buy back the assets once houses have been built and development contributions paid.

The Government is also considering setting up independent Urban Development Authorities to speed up consenting for large-scale development in highdemand areas.

This is a successful tool used overseas to override barriers to new housing developments.

launched its KiwiSaver HomeStart package to give first home buyers in every region extra assistance to get into their own homes.

The first year of the scheme has been very successful, helping 12,000 people to buy their first home.

To ensure that the Kiwisaver Homestart programme continues to meets its objectives the Government has recently increased the income and house price caps of the scheme.

The income caps increased from $80,000 to $85,000 for a single person and from $120,000 to $130,000 for a couple.

Meanwhile, the house price cap has increased by $50,000, with the cap for new homes set at an additional $50,000 above that for existing homes to help drive growth in new residential building.

Housing supply is a longstanding issue and there are no quick fixes but the Government is making good progress where it is needed.

Assailant dies in hospital A machete-wielding man who injured two female police officers in the Belgian city of Charleroi while calling “Allahu Akbar” has died in hospital after being shot, the city police have tweeted.

The weekend incident follows a series of knife and gun attacks across Europe in recent weeks, some of which are being linked to terrorist motives.

One of the two officers suffered deep cuts around the face and has been taken to hospital, the Belga news agency reported.

Her colleague was only slightly injured.

The attacker died in hospital after being shot by a third police officer, the RTBF broadcaster reported.

“Individual struck but alive,” Charleroi police had earlier tweeted.

The incident took place outside the police headquarters, according to the tweet.

“I strongly condemn the attack in Charleroi,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said on Twitter.

Interior Minister Jan Jambon called it a “vile act” in a tweet and expressed his support for the police officers, their families and their colleagues. The Belgian threat analysis unit, OCAM, is evaluating the situation, he added.

A large security perimeter has been set up around the site of the attack in the city 50km south of Brussels, and prosecutors are on site, Belga wrote.

Prince

No plan to sell Paisley Park The administrator of Prince’s estate says it is not planning to sell Paisley Park, one day after asking a judge for permission to offer several Prince properties for sale.

A court filing had included Paisley Park, Prince’s home and recording complex, among a list of properties that could be sold. But at the weekend, Bremer Trust issued a brief statement saying: “Bremer Trust, the special administrator for the Prince Rogers Nelson estate, has no plans to sell either Paisley Park or the property referred to as the Purple Rain house.”

London knife attack accused fronts court A teenager charged with carrying out a knife attack in London which left an American tourist dead and five people injured, including two Australians, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court.

Zakaria Bulhan, 19, is accused of murdering retired American teacher Darlene Horton, 64, at Russell Square in central London on Wednesday night.

British police have said they found no evidence that terrorism was a motive and the suspect had a history of mental illness.

Horton, the wife of a university professor from Florida, was just hours away from flying home when she was killed.

The mother-of-two was visiting London with husband Richard Wagner, who was

teaching summer classes. The couple had planned to return to their home in Tallahassee on Thursday.

Bulhan is also charged with the attempted murder of Lillie Selletin, David Imber, Bernard Hepplewhite, Martin Hoenisch and Yovel Lewronski, who were all injured in the same attack. Hoenisch, a retired fireman from Las Vegas, was visiting London with his wife, Laurie Kelly, when he was injured in the attack.

He said on Facebook: “Thanks to everyone for reaching out, we’re still very saddened about the woman who was killed.

“Very unreal experience but we are still having an unbelievable time over here.”

Lewronski, 18, was visiting London from Tel Aviv and was stabbed in the upper arm.

She said on Facebook she did not know whether to call it “luck or fate” that she escaped death, adding that she had watched as Horton “perished in front of my eyes”.

Selletin, an Australian national, was injured in the back during the attack along with Imber and Hepplewhite.

The two injured Australians, including a man injured in the chest, had asked that their privacy be respected.

Another Australian woman witnessed the attack but was not hurt.

Four of the injured were released from hospital shortly after being treated for their wounds apart from a British man who remains in a “serious but stable” condition after suffering a stab wound to his stomach.

Chile comes in from the cold

Horse treking across the Patagonian steppes is just one of a multitude of activities available for tourists in Chile.

E

xperimental restaurants, a sophisticated arts scene and a general, all-round nod to eccentricity make Chile’s mountain-fringed capital one of the most intriguing cities in South America.

Small enough to discover in a long weekend, Santiago is made up of several easily navigable neighbourhoods, all radiating their own special character.

Considered a cultural heartland, the leafy Lastarria district offers pleasant pavement cafes and distinctive boutique hotels, many housed in the few colonial-style buildings spared by a succession of devastating earthquakes.

Influenced by neo-classical French architecture, the grand Singular Santiago is one of the most spacious and atmospheric hotels in the city. Sip coffee in an elegantly cluttered lounge supervised by waiters attired in smart waistcoats, or zip right up to the 21st century at the hip rooftop cocktail bar.

Many museums and historical buildings can be found in the 16th century Plaza de Armas, the city’s main square, where old men furrow brows over games of chess beneath the shadow of the ornate 18th century Metropolitan Cathedral.

But a more offbeat attraction is La Chascona (“wild mane of hair”), the house built in the mid1950s by Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda for his lover Matilde, who had striking curly red locks.

From Santiago to the Atacama Desert, Sarah Marshall samples what’s on offer for tourists in Chile.

Like the man himself, the property is wonderfully eccentric: a secret doorway links the dining area and bedroom, allowing the host to surprise guests or disappear for a quick nap; and decorations include an enormous pair of men’s brogues, once used by a shoe shop to advertise their wares to the illiterate.

The poet, along with his friend, social activist and singer Violeta Parra, has also posthumously inspired a dinner/dance show not far from his house in the same Barrio Bellavista district. De Pablo a Violeta (depabloavioleta.com) skips, hops and strums through the cultural history of Chile, exploring dance, music, food and wine from different regions.

Stick around afterwards to enjoy a limitless bar, as folklore bands do their best to lift the roof on one of the area’s typical 100-year-old houses.

Horse ride across the Patagonian steppes Patagonia’s vast, windswept steppes and jagged granite mountains are a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. But softer souls can also enjoy the environment, without having to pitch a tent or set up a portaledge.

tious design hotels.

The Singular Patagonia (sister to their Santiago property) is set within the walls of a former early 20th-century abattoir, where heavy, iron British-made machinery is still displayed in a walkthrough museum. A 5km distance from town, the property has its own pier with boat trips operating to the fjords.

Recalling life in the area’s historic estancias, where European pioneers made their money from sheep farming, the Remota’s 72 rooms line long corridors connected by a ‘sheep channel’. The roof has been shaped to resemble a drying rack for wool, and windbent picket fences surround the property.

Aside from trekking in Torres del Paine (a one-hour-and20-minute drive away), visitors can take a horse-riding excursion to nearby Sierra Dorotea.

Led by a gaucho wearing a traditional boina beret and characteristically nonchalant expression, riders on hardy Criollo horses venture up the grassy mountainside to sheer drop viewpoints and forests burned silver by 70km/h gusts.

The experience ends in a lichen-draped clearing, with the ritual of lighting a fire and drinking mate. A small gourd filled with herbal tea literally does the rounds, passed in a circle until

the last person says thank you, a signal they’ve had enough.

Cruise the Southern Ice Fields Glaciers cover 2.7 per cent of Chile’s long, snaking surface, and dipping into the country’s icy fjords is made easy on a short four-day/three-night cruise.

A family business for more than three decades, the Skorpios III navigates the Southern Ice Field.

Sailing from Puerto Natales, a city close to top tourist attraction Torres del Paine and one of the key access points to Patagonia, the Kaweskar voyage sidles up to the honeycomb ridges of Amalia Glacier, deposits passengers on the rocks close to El Brujo Glacier, and salutes a cavalcade of frozen behemoths along the Calvo Fjord.

The trip continues north to the Montanas Fjord, where multi-coloured icebergs crack and hiss in a bay below Herman Glacier, and moraine-soiled peaks of Alcina Glacier resemble baked tips of a lemon meringue pie.

Weather in the fjords is generally dull and rainy, but grey skies actually cast these icy showstoppers in their best light, bringing out their characteristic blue hues. At least, that’s what Captain Kochifas and his optimistic staff say to passengers.

From the birdsong wake-up calls, to a chart illustrating global warming using underwear as a

scale (with bloomers and a thong at either extreme), slapstick humour gently pervades every aspect of the journey. Comfortable en-suite cabins carry 90 passengers, enough to be convivial without being claustrophobic, and food is several notches above top restaurant standard.

Take a balloon ride above the Atacama Desert Stretching more than 4000km, Chile spans extremes of temperature and topography. In the north lies the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, where surreal rock formations, skysoaring geysers and shimmering white salt flats have sparked a growing tourist industry.

Most resorts are based around the town of San Pedro on a high plateau 2400m above sea level. At the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa, low-lying cabins are set against a backdrop that flips between flaming red rocks and diamond-studded, starry skies as the clock turns from day to night.

Adventurous activities bookend the day, with long lunches and spa treatments enjoyed in-between.

Hike through the Dali-esque dunes of the Valley of the Moon, watch flamingoes settle on the Atacama Salt Flats, or study stars through a telescope on the hotel’s observation deck.

This autumn, there’ll be even more action in the skies with the introduction of hot air balloon rides above the Valley of the Moon.

Complaint over course conditions

Sevens romp to big win The New Zealand women’s sevens rugby team has made a flying start to the Rio Olympics with Portia Woodman (right) and Kayla McAlister the stand out figures.

Woodman, daughter of former All Black Kawhena Woodman, scored three tries in New Zealand’s opening 52-0 victory over Kenya in their first pool match.

The side then backed up a couple of hours later to defeat Spain 31-5 in their second match with Woodman repeating her effort of scoring a try in the first minute of the game.

Woodman now has four tries from two matches as does McAlister, sister of former All Black Charlie.

McAlister’s swag included an eyecatching length of the field burst against Spain and she was also New Zealand’s strongest player in contact, frequently offloading to team-mates.

New Zealand’s next game, against France this morning New Zealand time will decide who tops their pool.

In the opening match against the Kenyans, Sonny Bill Williams’ sister went one up on her famous brother.

Rowing New Zealand have laid an official complaint with organisers after the Olympic racing schedule continued in rough conditions on day one of heats at the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.

New Zealand’s chef de mission Rob Waddell said the rowers’ perseverance was testament to their skill.

“When you see boats going under water and people falling out, clearly it’s getting to the limit of what might be acceptable. You wouldn’t even train in those conditions.”

The rowers are backed to be New Zealand’s top performers at the Games and six out of seven crews showed why on the opening day of competition.

The Kiwis will simply say it’s a matter of delivering on what they know they’re capable of, and that’s fine, but in demanding conditions, where Emma Twigg and Mahe Drysdale were among those outspoken on the state of the water, they’ll be quietly satisfied.

Elsewhere Drysdale and Twigg, uncatchable pair Murray and Bond, women’s double scullers Eve Macfarlane and Zoe Stevenson and men’s scullers Robbie Manson and Chris Harris all had wins. - NZME

In other matches, gold medal favourites Australia went one point better than New Zealand by trouncing Colombia 53-0, Britain defeated Brazil 29-3 and France won the opening match, downing Spain 24-7.

Warriors spoil Hayne’s party

By DaviD Skipwith The Warriors put aside a week of hype surrounding Jarryd Hayne’s NRL return and continued their run towards the finals with a thrilling win over the Titans on the Gold Coast yesterday.

Both sides scored two tries to be level at 10-10 at the break before the Warriors shot clear with three second-half four-pointers securing a vital victory at Cbus Super Stadium.

Centre Solomone Kata was the hero for the visitors, scoring the last two tries to give him a clear points decision in his personal duel with his opposite, friend and former Warriors team-mate Konrad Hurrell, in his first match against his old side.

Hayne’s inclusion in the Titans side dominated the build-up but the former Parramatta Eels fullback, San Francisco 49er, and Fijian Sevens Olympic hopeful had a mixed outing in his first game of league since September 2014.

With the Warriors ahead by six, Hayne’s pass was intercepted by Warriors centre David Fusitu’a who was cut down short of the line by Hurrell, before Kata strolled over on the next play.

Seven minutes later Kata was the one tearing downfield and a mighty fend on Titans wing Anthony Don propelled him into the ingoal for his second, to give him the outright lead at the top of the club’s try-scoring tally with 12 for the season so far.

The Titans got a sniff of a comeback in the 74th minute when Don crossed for his side’s third four-pointer but the Warriors held their nerve with the result seeing them leapfrog the

Earlier, the hosts were denied the first try before the Warriors posted the first points after six minutes, with Fusitu’a’s trademark corner dive reaping his 11th four pointer of the season following three straight sets on the Gold Coast line.

After a week of excitement around the signing of Hayne, the Titans looked lethargic, coming off a short turnaround from last

Monday’s golden point draw with Cronulla.

The Warriors were allowed easy metres through the middle, with wing Ken Maumalo coming in to help forwards Ben Matulino, Jacob Lillyman and Simon Mannering get over the advantage line, while halfback Shaun Johnson and back-rower Bodene Thompson posed constant threats on the right edge.

However, after a period of sustained possession the Titans were

good enough to take a two point lead after front-rower Ryan James barged over under the crossbar with halfback Ashley Taylor adding the extras off the boot the end of the first quarter.

Momentum swung back to the visitors with a penalty piggybacking the Warriors downtown before a Lolohea grubber forced a second repeat set from which Thompson bustled over to score, with the fullback’s conversion making it 10-6 after 28 minutes.

The stoppage provided the chance for Hayne to enter the match at five-eighth and the two time Dally M winner made an immediate impact with a trysaving tackle to deny Thompson a second four-pointer, before out-leaping Lolohea to claim a high ball at the other end of the ground.

Hayne’s effort helped the Titans claim a line dropout before Taylor put Hurrell in for their second try, to see the home side draw level six minutes before half-time.

Four minutes after the resumption the Warriors capitalised on some enterprising attack with Johnson’s passing for Mannering to crash over for their third and Lolohea’s kick putting them six points clear.

The seesawing contest continued throughout the last quarter before Kata’s double had the Warriors looking safe but Don’s late try ensured the home side kept pressing until the death.

Lockyer rules out Bulldogs NRL title hopes Darren Lockyer has put a line through Canterbury’s as an NRL title threat, declaring the Bulldogs are not ruthless enough.

In analysis sure to fire up coach Des Hasler and his troops, Locky-

er said the Bulldogs had not been consistent enough to be considered premiership contenders.

Despite being in top four contention after six wins from their past seven starts, Lockyer said

Canterbury hadn’t exhibited the kind of form that warranted them to be considered a threat to North Queensland, Melbourne, Cronulla and Canberra.

“I don’t think they’re consistent

enough, there’s not enough discipline in their performance,” Lockyer said. “They’re just in and out, in and out over the 80 and you’re not going to win premierships playing that style of football.”

Beckley Cup delayed Snow and adverse weather over the weekend caused the postponement of the annual Beckley Cup rugby match between Mt Somers and Southern. The game was to have been played at Mt Somers yesterday but there was still snow on the ground and a heavy frost compounded the ground conditions. The game has been put off until further notice.

In for the long haul Manu Vatuvei wants to play in the NRL until 2020. Vatuvei, who lined up for his 221st career game yesterday, was meant to be winding down, in the twilight of his career. But the 30-year-old has an ambitious – some might say improbable – goal of extending his career well beyond his current contract, which finishes at the end of the 2017 season. “I’ve always wanted to play as long as I can,” he said. “I love the sport and that’s why I’m playing. All that other stuff that comes with it is tough, but you have to do what you love.

Hopefully I have another five years in me ... but my body will tell me if I can go longer or not.”

Storm hit the front Greg Inglis has hailed Cameron Smith as a benchmark for NRL excellence after the Melbourne captain calmly led his side to the top of the competition ladder. Smith slotted a 39m post-siren penalty to put Saturday night’s round 22 clash with South Sydney into extra time, before cooly slotting a field goal four minutes into golden point to give the Storm a 15-14 win. Setback for Raiders Canberra’s surge to the NRL finals has suffered a possible setback after star Blake Austin came off with a shoulder injury in the side’s strong win over Cronulla on Saturday. Austin landed awkwardly on the play that sealed victory and immediately came from the field clutching his right shoulder.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart will now be sweating on scans on his key playmaker, however Austin is hopeful he will be able to take the field in next week’s blockbuster against Melbourne.

Canes save best till last

By GreGor Paul It’s a lovely old cliché about defence winning titles.

It’s simple and, as the Hurricanes have proven, it’s also true.

Great entertainers that they are, it was their defensive effort that won the Hurricanes their maiden title.

It was their defence that made them champions, separated them from the rest of the pack in the final weeks.

What can’t get lost in the celebrations and rightful praising of the heroic work, again, of Ardie Savea, TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett who broke the hearts of the Lions, is that the Hurricanes completed the most incredible feat of going through the playoffs without conceding a try.

That’s something that may never be done again and was the bedrock of all the attacking football they played in the last three weeks.

They saved their best for last, though.

The Hurricanes defence in the final was quite superb.

It was relentless and unforgiving and with the sort of intimidating edge that got to the Lions.

The visitors were plucky and resourceful.

They came to play their preferred game of adventurous and expansive rugby and didn’t seem to give two hoots about the weather.

But they couldn’t deal with the speed of the Hurricanes’ defensive line.

They couldn’t ever quite relax and play as freely as they wanted because, in the first 20 minutes, they were hit hard on the gainline.

Brad Shields was a colossus.

This was maybe his finest

Beuaden Barrett and Victor Vito starred for the Hurricanes. hour – tackling his heart out and standing up to a big pack who hadn’t really been buckled by any-one coming into the final.

Michael Fatialofa had a big shift, too, and Victor Vito, in his last and 100th game for the Hurricanes, was hitting big men square on and hurting them.

The physicality and abrasiveness was at the level coaches love.

It was at the level they always hope they will see but can’t ever be sure they will get it.

The picture was much the same in the midfield and it didn’t take long for the Lions’ ball carriers to hit the line with half an eye on the ball and half an eye on the fast-approaching yellow-andblack line.

The inevitable spillages mounted up.

The Lions just couldn’t find holes.

They could get the ball wide, but couldn’t do anything but feel they were under siege.

They ran nowhere and, as the game wore on, they lost all hope that they were ever going to find a way through.

Panic slowly gripped them and, by the second half, they were unravelling.

That was the effect of the Hurricanes’ defence.

It broke the Lions’ spirit and no one looked more broken than Elton Jantjies.

The young man whose onfield growth this year has been impressive, didn’t settle into his

role as chief playmaker.

He looked a touch frazzled at the pressure he was having to play under and his miscued penalty on 63 minutes – a critical opportunity – was evidence of the shakiness he was feeling.

For all the advances he has made this year, maybe he’s still carrying an element of psychological vulnerability.

It was a big miss because, trailing 13-3, the Lions needed to get the scoreboard moving.

They hadn’t looked like scoring a try and, if they were going to have any hope of salvaging the game, they were going to have kick four penalties.

The Lions just couldn’t build pressure, failed to find any fluency.

The side who led the competition in try-scoring were simply blown away.

It left the Hurricanes within one moment of getting their hands on the trophy and, much like the match, it was messy when it arrived through Barrett.

Although, as the eruption from the 35,000-strong crowd showed, aesthetics were far from important.

Only the final whistle mattered and, when it came, it provided a fitting farewell for Victor Vito in his 100th and final game, and offered a brilliant reward for coach Chris Boyd, who somehow shook off last year’s agony to guide his side to glory.

And, most of all, that whistle sparked a truly special moment for a set of long-suffering fans who, until now, had endured only the opposite.

NZ rugby poor winners, says Kearns Former Wallaby captain Phil Kearns has labelled New Zealand rugby as poor winners, after the Hurricanes’ Super Rugby final victory over the Lions in Wellington.

The Fox pundit reckoned: “Talk about gracious speeches - I’d love New Zealanders when they win something just to acknowledge the opposition. Two rugby World Cups and a Super Rugby title...I wonder if it’s a tactic...we’re not going to acknowledge people we defeat.”

Fellow commentator Rod Kafer offered another view, claiming New Zealanders “like to keep things internal”.

Kearns caused an uproar last year when he claimed South African referee Craig Joubert had a “shocker” when the Waratahs lost their semifinal to the Highlanders.

Kearns didn’t back down then either.

“Craig Joubert, in my view, is one of the better referees in the game but the other night he had

a shocker,” Kearns said, after copping a load of trans-Tasman criticism.

“So you Kiwis shut up. That same ref gifted you the World Cup final in 2011 – just ask the rest of the world.”

Kearns, who is noted for some one-eyed commentary, was described as a sore loser and a hypocrite by social media users although another said “not sure if this is accurate or not, but yeah opposition teams need to be acknowledged.”

Captain’s knock If there was one moment that exemplified the Hurricanes’ unflinching charge to their first Super Rugby title, it arrived shortly after reserve hooker Ricky Riccitelli fell face-first into an opponent. Almost before the first drop of blood flowed, Dane Coles had leapt from the bench. Coles, of course, spent the last fortnight mired in a rib-related injury saga. When his team needed him most, Coles showed no hesitation for his health, heading straight back into battle. “Mate, it’s a final,” he said.

Consolation for Marx Malcolm Marx has received some consolation after finishing on the losing side in the Super Rugby final, with selection in a 31-man South African squad for the first two matches of this year’s Rugby Championship. The Lions’ hooker had reason to smile just hours after the final whistle as the Springbok squad was announced. Juan de Jongh, Johan Goosen, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard, Vincent Koch and Oupa Mohoje won recalls as seven changes were made to the squad that played Ireland. - Reuters

ABs to go it alone?

All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen has backed New Zealand Rugby Union’s chief executive Steve Tew’s stance on going at it alone if a global season isn’t put in place by 2020. Tew said when the All Blacks existing test schedule, as decided by World Rugby, ends in 2020, the NZRU will keep their promise to reserve their right to negotiate individual test matches.

Hansen said the global season was possible, but negotiating their own tests made sense from an All Blacks perspective.

Collins inspired Canes Former loose forward Jerry Collins was a big part of the inspiration behind the Hurricanes’ defence this year, the new Super Rugby champions have revealed. The Hurricanes have not conceded a try in almost five hours of rugby on their way to a maiden Super Rugby title.

Against the Chiefs they soaked up wave after wave of pressure and did the same against the Lions.

Collins, a staunch Hurricane, was one of the toughest defenders in rugby and was killed last year in a car accident in France.

Super send-off for Vito

Victor Vito got the fairytale finish to his Hurricanes career his teammates wanted for him, but the loose-forward admitted to some mixed emotions following the team’s Super Rugby title success.

It was the perfect send-off for Vito, who will head to French club La Rochelle later this month. “I had a little bit of a sad moment to myself just thinking how awesome this crew is and how much I’m going to miss them.”

Lawson tops in singles Ashburton indoor bowler Mike Lawson is off to Wellington to play in the Henselite singles championships after winning the local qualifying competition at the weekend.

Lawson beat Simon Thomas 11-10 in a tight contest at the Ashburton Indoor Bowls stadium at McNally Street on Saturday.

Twelve players were in the draw; five qualifiers played off with Mark Sheard beating Matt Markham.

Sheard went on to face Lawson in a semi-final and the scores were tied at 10-10 at the last end, Lawson picking up a three on the 12th to take victory.

as and Des Hawkins was also a close affair.

It was tied up at 7-7 after 11 ends, Thomas eventually taking it 8-7.

In the final, Lawson got out to a comfortable 8-4 lead after eight ends and was up 11-5 after 10 ends before Thomas picked up a three and made it a contest.

Lawson will fly to Wellington in September to play in the champion of champion national singles event.

The indoor bowls stadium was a busy place over the weekend, with Ashburton hosting a representative Canterbury side yesterday and a North Island team today.

Venus Williams is out of the Olympics, losing in the first round to unfancied Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5). When Williams pushed one last forehand long to lose in the first round for the first time in her record five Olympic singles tournaments, her opponent celebrated as if having claimed gold, dropping down on the green hard court to plant a kiss on the white five-ring logo. This was clearly a very big deal to Flipkens, a Belgian who only once got as far as the semifinals at a Grand Slam.

Myers makes it a treble The Big Opal produced a gem of a performance on Saturday to complete a dream opening to the Grand National carnival at Riccarton for Kevin Myers.

The Wanganui jumper produced a flawless display off the front to win the NZI Koral Steeplechase in a canter ahead of the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Grand National Steeplechase in seven days’ time.

The Big Opal was partnered by Mathew Gillies and completed a clean sweep of the jumping events for Myers following the earlier successes of the Shaun Fannin-ridden duo of Ngario and Mailly.

For Gillies, it represented a perfect return to riding after a nasty fall at Trentham last month left him side-lined with concussion.

“That was great and it was Kevin’s decision for me to ride him so well done to everybody involved,” Gillies said.

The Big Opal jumped well at the head of the field and he was never in danger of defeat, cruising to victory and remains unbeaten after four steeplechase starts.

“He travelled well all the way and I had a lot of horse left under me,” Gillies said.

The Myers team is again in the capable care of Ken Harrison in Christchurch and he was naturally delighted with The Big Opal’s effort.

Sherpa finds top form A frustrating run of injury, illness and bad luck came to an end on Saturday when rugged gelding Sherpa returned to the winner’s enclosure with a dominant performance at Ruakaka. Trainer Alan Tait had experienced any number of frustrations with the five-year-old gelding who was greeting the judge for his first win since March 2015. Tait admitted his patience had been tried on numerous occasions over the past year as he fought to restore the gelding to full health.

Eade a happy trainer Riverton trainer Graham Eade is hoping the winning run of giant gelding Stokers Rock can continue at Riccarton next Saturday after his charge scored an impressive victory on the first day of the Grand National Carnival on the weekend. Four in a row for Mulvihill Pat Mulvihill from Geraldine went into Saturday’s Mid Canterbury Squash Championships final a warm favourite, and that’s how it eventually panned out.

The top seed only dropped one game on the way to the final with comprehensive wins over Matt Speedy (Rakaia) and Collegiate’s Phil Hurley, and faced Sam Shearer (Ashburton) who was equally impressive, beating Neville Mulvihill (Geraldine) and Kendall Sparrow (Ashburton) to make the final at the Collegiate courts.

But it was all Mulvihill in the big match.

Even in the first game B2-graded Shearer was forced into errors, pushed into boasts that found the tin or just left stranded after long rallies that Mulvihill dominated.

Shearer did show in the third game signs that Mulvihill couldn’t afford to relax his stranglehold, with one superb forehand drive that was never coming back, and an attacking boast that must have shaved the top of the tin, but in the end he was left chasing scraps from the higher-graded Mulvihill, who went on to take the match, and a championship double hat-trick.

In keeping with recent events (the Celtic third v fourth playoff between Corey Hast-

ie and John McDonnell was the game of the year), the battle for third place was a classic in more ways than one.

Phil Hurley and Kendall Sparrow took to the court with the old ‘lollipop’ rackets.

That is the wooden ones with tiny heads, as used by the likes of Susan Devoy in her earlier days, but the old-style equipment seemed to have no detrimental effect on the players, as they produced a fine display of entertaining squash, with only a few ‘gin’ shots to be blamed on the rackets.

For the record, Sparrow took out the clash in straight sets.

Mitch Sim (Methven) continued his fine form of late with a 3-0 victory over Ashburton’s Garry Mayne in the B grade final.

Sim had to be good, as Mayne has been putting some super form out there himself recently, coming runner-up in a classy B grade field at the Celtic tournament.

Second-seeded Sam Harrison from Celtic beat Mark Kennedy (Ashburton) in the C grade decider, after Kennedy had knocked out top seed Jeremy Robinson and Collegiate’s Mitchell Fergus, while in the D grade top seed Jake Bremner won in straight sets over Mitchell Stoddart (Collegiate), after disposing of Collegiate’s Peter Yates and Steve Symonds on the way.

Sport Showing the love A victory parade will be held for Super Rugby champions the Hurricanes in Wellington tomorrow.

“The Hurricanes are Super Rugby champions. Now it’s time for Wellingtonians to celebrate the team’s success – with a victory parade,” a spokesman for the Wellington City Council said.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown was exicted about the win. “We are all so proud the Canes could raise the Super Rugby trophy on their home ground. Now it’s time for everyone to get out and show them the love,” she said.

Ferns’ skipper sees red

BY DAVID LEGGAT Football Ferns officials are making strenuous efforts to have the red card handed out to captain Abby Erceg yesterday overturned.

Erceg, New Zealand’s most capped player, was bizarrely sent off by Zambian referee Gladys Lengwe three minutes from time before they hung on to win 1-0 against Colombia, and stay alive in the Olympic tournament.

They will almost certainly have to beat world No 3 France in their final group G match to make the quarter-finals.

Erceg and Colombian player Tatiana Ariza were challenging for a loose ball bouncing away to the right of the New Zealand penalty area. The players’ arms became briefly entangled before Ariza theratrically flung herself to the ground.

To the amazement of the New Zealand players, Lengwe pulled out a red card.

Erceg kept her cool pretty well before departing.

“It was obviously a wrong decision,” New Zealand coach Tony Readings said.

“I don’t think there’s any debate if the wrong or right decision so we’re looking now at the appeals process.

“We’ve got a legal team looking at it in New Zealand as well.”

New Zealand, ranked 17th, were worth the win against their 24th-ranked opponents, but had to survive a late scare when goalkeeper Erin Nayler pulled off a fine, one-handed save to her right from the free kick resulting from Erceg’s dismissal.

With Ferns’ minds racing as Erceg headed for the tunnel, but Nayler did a top job.

as important a part,” Readings said.

Hearn scored after half an hour, wrongfooting the Colombian goalkeeper and apart from a late flurry from the South Americans were worth the win.

“Fingers crossed justice prevails,” Readings said.

“Referees are going to make mistakes and there needs to be a way to overturn them.

“Abby’s been outstanding in these first two games (New Zealand lost 2-0 to world No 1 United States in their opener) and to get an incorrect decision that would have us not at full strength is going to be pretty tough.

“We do have good players to step in but it’s very hard to replace that experience and your leader.”

Readings said his players had taken Erceg’s fate reasonably well.

“We’ve put ourselves in a posi-

tion that if we win the next game we’ll finish second so we’re really upbeat about that.”

The Football Ferns play France in Salvador on Wednesday morning (NZT).

It’ll be a daunting enough task, even with the seasoned Erceg running the cutter.

The last time the teams met, in 2014, France won 2-1.

The top two in each group automatically progress to the last eight, along with the best two of the three third-place finishers.

Brazil, Sweden and China are all expected to progress from group E while Australia, on one point, are the strongest of chances to topple bottom placed Zimbabwe in group F, which would put them on four points, either level with Germany or in second spot behind Canada.

Therefore, with a goal difference of -1, New Zealand really need a win over the French.
