Workshop planned around Whatever it Takes slogan

Ashburton’s mayor has signalled the district’s slogan Whatever it Takes could be replaced by the end of the year.

Mayor Neil Brown has confirmed plans to open the matter up for public consultation after eight members of the Ashburton District Council backed a move to change the district’s catchphrase.

A workshop around the rebranding of Ashburton is set to be the next step after the matter was reviewed at this week’s full council meeting.

Decisions around a new slogan, logo and whether a branding refresh would encompass the Ashburton town or the wider district are likely to be key points at the workshop.

Both the mayor and Ashburton Ward councillor Carolyn Cameron fronted interviews on Radio New Zealand and The AM Show respectively this week.

‘The Heart of the Mainland’ seems to be the frontrunner according to both community leaders during national coverage this week.

It took less than 30 seconds of the meeting for the mayor to make a tongue-in-cheek reference to the topic.

“A reasonable agenda today, but we’re going to get through it … whatever it takes,” he quipped.

Brown told Checkpoint’s Lisa Owen this week that he believed residents had “gotten over it” and that there could be a new district slogan within six months.

A walk to remember

It wasn’t quite the 828 students that walked the route from the old school premises in Cameron Street to Walnut Avenue back in 1971, but 27 former and current students re-enacted the walk at the same day and time, just 50 years later.

Yesterday at 10am marked 50 years since two schools become one, and the students set off towards their new school.

Former Ashburton College students Peter Gluyas, Jenny Watson and Bruce Bell were among those who moved from the two schools, to what is now Ashburton College.

was part of the walk, alongside members of the Year 9 and 10 student council.

“These students were elected by their peers to represent them and our school, it was fitting to have them do the walk,” he said.

When questioned about how he felt to be walking along the route, he replied.

“Fine, hoping I can make it.”

Upon reaching Ashburton College, the group were greeted by Mayor Neil Brown and the group, including the mayor, signed their names on a document that stated they walked the 1.9km to celebrate Ashburton College’s 50 year journey.

Some councillors at the meeting questioned whether there was a need for a replacement slogan.

“Personally, I don’t think it makes the slightest bit of difference,” Western Ward councillor Rodger Letham said.

“It’s just window dressing.

“I actually don’t think we need one.”

Eastern Ward councillor Lynette Lovett believed it was not worth investing money on consultation.”

Ashburton Ward councillor Leen Braam joked that it should be “A Bridge Too Short” in relation to the longstanding community debate around plans for a second bridge in the Mid Canterbury town.

Cameron said at the council meeting that town branding could be pivotal in attracting prospective employees to the district.

“If we had a town that had an image . . . and we could communicate that clearly to people, I think we’d be more attractive to employees.

“I think it’s much needed.”

$60 million rebuild closer

Ashburton College awaits development go-ahead

From page 1 There are two sticking points before the masterplan for the $60 million rebuild of Ashburton College can progress.

Ashburton College principal, Ross Preece, was hoping to unveil the blueprint in time for the reunion of former students this weekend, but two issues still have to be resolved.

They are where to position the staffroom and the location and size of the specialist technology rooms.

Preece acknowledges the masterplan was meant to be completed by now, but he’s hoping for sign off within the next couple of months.

He said the key to the development of the new school was planning.

“Once planning, pricing and consents are approved, we can progress,” he said.

“We need to get the planning right before we can start. You can’t make changes once development is under way.”

Stage one of the development was scheduled to begin later this year, with a completion date in 2024, but Preece wasn’t holding his breath.

It involved building a 30-classroom block in an area of the school which was vacant. That meant the building programme could progress with minimal disruption and staff and students could stay on site.

“It’s going to be a state-of-theart school and a fantastic facility for future generations,” he said.

“It’ll be nice for staff and students to have a fit for purpose learning space.”

With the first stage finished, attention would turn to the second stage or master build, which has a completion date in 10 years’ time. The consortium, which included Ashburton College, Ministry of Education and BCN architects, based in Melbourne and Christchurch, were planning for a school with a capacity of 1600 students.

Preece said the design of the present school was no longer fit

for purpose. It may have been ahead of its time in the 1960s, but it was no longer appropriate today. He said it was difficult to heat and not built for data projection “which is a crucial part of our teaching programme”.

“You can’t remodel walls of a classroom to create a collaborative space for 100 students. It’s that flexibility of space we need.”

He said Ashburton College demanded good ventilation, acoustics and natural light in its classrooms.

“There’ll be many times when there’s stand-alone teaching, but with the flexibility and capacity to have collaboration between groups.”

The decision to build a new school was made in 2018 but was a work in progress before then.

On March 14, 2019, Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, announced a $50 million remodelling of the existing school.

“On the positive side, what’s been decided is replacing the traditional teaching blocks and the library but retaining the gymnasium and auditorium,” Preece said.

“The holdup is trying to get a plan that meets our needs but fulfils the ministry guidelines, but I’m hopeful we’ll reach agreement within the next month or two.”

COVID-19

GP implores locals to get Covid-19 vaccinations

The GP spokesperson for Ashburton doctors is encouraging everyone to have the Covid-19 vaccine.

Dr Anibal Martinez describes the Pfizer vaccine as “the Ferrari of vaccines”.

Frontline healthcare providers and first responders are currently receiving the vaccine – either at Ashburton Hospital or Life Pharmacy – and will need to return in a fortnight to get their second jabs.

Dr Martinez is receiving his vaccination on Friday.

He said nurses, some from private GP practices, will then form a team to vaccinate the rest of Mid Canterbury from Ashburton Hospital.

Starting in June, high risk groups such as rest-home patients, those 65 and over and people with pre-existent medical conditions will begin to receive the vaccine.

The remainder of the population will then get their jabs in July and August.

Dr Martinez is asking people to be patient.

He said the country is expe-

riencing a shortage of GPs and nurses and the roll-out of vaccines has been a challenge.

“The country is dependent on locums coming in and the closure of the border has made it more difficult to attract them because of quarantine restrictions and the visa process,” he said.

“For example, if a doctor has a partner and family the quarantine cost is off-putting.”

He recommends the government should take a tailored approach to the problem and resolve the problems being faced at the barrier.

Locally, he describes initiatives as “a pipeline of ideas” that health professionals are addressing to attract locums or New Zealand GPs from other areas to Ashburton.

At present students from Otago Medical School are in Mid Canterbury getting practical experience.

He’s hoping they’ll be the GPs of the future who are prepared to practise in smaller centres such as Ashburton.

Dr Martinez estimated it’ll take six months to a year for New Zealand to return to normal following the complete roll-out of vaccinations.

Canterbury vaccine roll-out progressing

The Canterbury DHB (CDHB) continues to progress the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out in Canterbury.

CDHB’s executive lead for the Covid-19 response, Ralph La Salle, said vaccinations of frontline healthcare workers in Group 2 is ongoing in Canterbury.

That includes approximately 450 frontline DHB staff based in Ashburton, who will receive their vaccinations as part of this group, La Salle said.

The Group 2 vaccinations started last week in Ashburton which included a community clinic being stood up last week and a hospital-based clinic this week to vaccinate Ashburton-based frontline healthcare workers that fall into the Group 2 category.

The frontline healthcare workers should receive an invitation to be vaccinated from their employer, the CDHB or health provider.

La Salle said the CDHB is currently planning for the commencement of vaccinations of Group 3 across Canterbury.

“Work is under way to implement our plan for the wider vaccination roll-out in Ashburton, which will be a collaboration between primary and secondary care,” he said.

“We’ll be able to share details of these plans, including for Ashburton, once they are confirmed.”

Under the government roll-out plan, border and managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) workers (Group 1) received the vaccination first.

About 20 per cent of New Zealand’s approximately 12,000 border and Managed Isolation & Quarantine (MIQ) workers are based in Canterbury, La Salle said, and the CDHB is progressing second dose vaccinations of this group as well as household contacts of the border workers.

Group 2, the high-risk frontline healthcare workers and people living in high-risk places, are now eligible for their vaccination.

The around 1.7 million people in Group 3, those that are ‘at risk of getting very sick from Covid-19’ can expect an invitation to be vaccinated from the CDHB from late May. The rest of the population, Group 4, is scheduled to receive the vaccination from July.

Peter Rabbit reigns supreme

A scarecrow effigy of Peter Rabbit has been crowned the people’s choice champion in the 2021 Methven Scarecrow Trail.

The annual Scarecrow Trail had a record number of participants this year, with over 2500 people hunting for the 40 handmade creations scattered around the streets of Methven.

“Thanks so much to the scarecrow makers for your support and efforts, the feedback received was that the scarecrows this year were the best ever so well done,” organiser Gillian Heald said.

The theme this year was children’s storybook characters, and it proved to be challenging for the creators and then the contestants as there are lots of children’s books with similar characters Heald said.

“The scarecrow makers were encouraged to give extra clues where possible, like Luke the Pook pukeko was wearing redband gumboots, and Hairy Maclary was next to a sign for Donaldson’s Dairy.”

In its eagerness to promote the Scarecrow Trail, the Guardian gave away several answers halfway through the holidays which had to be taken into account by

the organisers.

In the end there were 19 participant groups whose entry correctly identified all the storybook characters, Heald said and the prize winner was selected by a random number draw by deputy mayor Liz McMillan, with Christchurch’s Remy, 8, and Ellie, 10, being drawn as winners.

However, the most coveted crown was that of the people’s choice and from the 573 groups that participated, Deidra O’Shea’s Peter Rabbit came out on top.

A Big Bad Wolf by Big River Builders was second, Stickman by Emily Cooke was third, fourth place went to Ashburton Intermediate School’s Buckbeak entry and rounding out the top five was Jackson Holmes’ Farmer McPhee, which also took home a special award for use of lighting.

Heald said they were grateful for the continued support of the sponsors and for the support of Community Board funding for marketing from the Ashburton District Council as well as a special thanks also to the staff at the Methven iHub and the Four Square Supermarket for all their work in selling the maps.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A hot summer beating may have left parts of a well-used rural road a little worse for wear, but Ashburton District Council’s road maintenance contractor, HEB Construction has now finished repairing the damage. A 500m section of Maronan Road, between Barford and Swamp Roads has been completely reconstructed, after the road was left ripped up when it began to melt on a number of blistering hot days this past summer. Excess bitumen, which had risen to the road surface is vulnerable to melting in extreme heat, sticking to tyres as vehicles travel along the road.

The Maronan Road bitumen was torn up in areas, leaving motorists with a rough drive. The contractor has been working to repair the damaged section for the past month, digging up weak areas of road and then building a 100mm thick pavement on top. The work finished up on Tuesday when the final road seal was applied.

11.35am, a police spokeswoman said.

Two helicopters were dispatched from Christchurch and an ambulance from Ashburton.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said there were three patients.

One person with serious injuries and one with moderate injuries were airlifted to Christchurch hospital and one with minor injuries was transported to Ashburton Hospital.

I came, I saw and I painted

There are two ways of telling New Zealand about the beauty of inland Mid Canterbury.

One is word of mouth, the other is recording the image.

Jen Dearborn, former president of the Ashburton Society of Arts, has done both. ` She’s invited members of Watercolour New Zealand to a “paintaway” based in and around Methven over the weekend and extending into next week.

About 45 painters and their partners, many from Wellington, are coming to the Ashburton District for the first time to capture the beauty of Staveley, Mount Somers, Rakaia Gorge, Lake Clearwater and many other locations.

Their artistry will be shown at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall from 6-7pm on Sunday for the public to view, but many paintings will return to the North Island to remind people of the grandeur of our scenery.

Dearborn said the purpose of the event is to get people painting outdoors, but also to showcase the district’s spectacular vistas.

Several local watercolour artists are taking part and, one of them, Ngaio McKee, firmly believes New Zealand people don’t realise “the beauty of inland Mid Canterbury”.

“I hope the outcome of the visit will be national recognition that we have some of the finest landscapes in New Zealand,” she said.

Both Dearborn and McKee believe the backdrop of lakes, water, scenery and mountains is ideal for water colours.

Although Dearborn is a multi-medium artist, she said there’s something special about water colour.

“You get magic happening,” she said.

“You put a colour down and another on top and they blend and you can’t quite predict what will happen next with each colour.”

She’s hoping magic will occur this weekend.

Drive Smokefree gets GP approval

There’s a direct correlation between inhaling second-hand smoke and days in hospital.

GP spokesperson for Ashburton, Dr Anibal Martinez, is supporting the Drive Smokefree for Tamariki campaign which began this week.

The campaign is aimed to help change the culture of smoking in cars with kids, with the goal of stopping the practice.

Dr Martinez said children, with underlying respiratory conditions, are vulnerable to an unhealthy atmosphere in cars which can cost lives or lead to days in hospital.

“Even children who don’t have underlying respiratory

conditions can, in time, have damaged lungs because of inhaled smoke from cigarettes,” he said.

“The campaign is good as a public health measure.”

The campaign emphasises that younger children are highly vulnerable to the effects of second-hand smoke which accumulates in vehicles, even when windows are open, and reaches

much higher levels than other settings.

“Children have little or no ability to influence smokers or avoid the situation,” it said.

The campaign leads directly to government regulation which, from November 28, forbids smoking or vaping in a vehicle that has children under 18 years in it, whether the vehicles is moving or not.

Glass exhibition first for gallery

The Ashburton Art Gallery staff and Ashburton’s art community are thrilled to be able to feast their eyes on the gallery’s first glass exhibition.

When blown glass artist Dominic Burrell isn’t in his scorching studio and home in Whanganui, he can often be found in Ashburton.

“I love the Mid Canterbury summers, its peace and quiet, and great coffee,” he said.

Coming down for the dry Mid Canterbury summer for the past 20 years, the art community almost call him a local.

“He knows this town very well, but this town doesn’t know him very well yet,” Ashburton Art Gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani said.

Mid Canterbury is a huge inspiration for his work, with many of the artworks in his exhibition having names inspired by the district, Isobar tower Southern Alps, Isobar tower Hakatere, Mount Hutt, Rakaia and one of his personal favourites in the exhibition, Isobar tower Ashburton.

Burrell admits that if he wasn’t going to be an artist he would be in a career in meteorology or geology.

He used his passion for meteorology, geology, and his love of the Mid Canterbury landscape as his inspiration for the Ashburton Art Gallery exhibition.

A lot of Burrell’s work can be mistaken for other mediums, such as ceramic or cast glass.

“His work is so tricky to read, as a lot of the pieces don’t read as glass, or even hand blown glass,” Khosraviani said.

Burrell, predominately a blown glass artist, has been more known as a sculpture artist in recent years due to experimenting with creating blown glass towers.

You NEED a slogan

W

elcome to Ashburton’s town slogan central.

It feels like nearly everyone up and down the country has jumped onboard the Guardian-led drive for a new Ashburton town slogan.

Thousands of slogan comments and suggestions – including the rude and ridiculous – have flowed on websites, Facebook pages, across numerous newspapers, radio stations and even national TV. And yesterday’s four-minute television breakfast programme slogan interview with Ashburton district councillor, Carolyn Cameron, was the equivalent of marketing gold for our district.

Cameron came across well, highlighting the need for a new town slogan, while also explaining what exactly the Ashburton district had to offer, including, and probably much to the disgust of those in Queenstown and Wanaka, of “having the best skifield in New Zealand at Mt Hutt’’.

It was a near-faultless performance, which would have been perfect had the councillor remembered to mention that the concept for a town slogan that wasn’t ridiculous, outdated or just plain confusing actually started here. At the Ashburton Guardian. At your paper.

We saw the need to address a glaring marketing and identity gap because Ashburton was almost a faceless town. It was a town with a name, but a town with no slogan, no catch cry, no marketing factor to attract people into our fabulous little community to make them to stop off, have a look around and maybe even stay for good.

And now, in this dramatic new Covid world we live in, and when towns and cities are locked in competition for their economic well-being, and the desperation in some cases to attract workers and families, a catch cry that links in your image, tourism and commercial strategies is even more important than ever.

In the next decade or so, towns and cities will have to work much harder at marketing themselves and developing a competitive identity than they have done in the past.

Their audiences are becoming more discerning and demanding.

Their competitors are increasingly becoming more sophisticated.

A slogan and clever welcome sign would play an important role in any town’s marketing and branding plan. Make no mistake about that.

So now it’s up to the Ashburton District Council to make it happen, to rid itself of the laughable “Whatever it Takes’’ marketing tagline that is surviving on oxygen support.

I just hope the council doesn’t take the soft option and back track by saying Ashburton suddenly doesn’t need a marketing and identity catch cry as part of its commercial and tourism strategy.

Opting not to have a slogan now, or even citing costs as a deterrent, would say a heck of lot about the council. And it wouldn’t be great.

Nigel and his F-bombs I

had the pleasure of introducing Nigel Latta at his chat on Parenting Teens at the EA Networks Centre on Tuesday night.

I got the sound check out of the way and wandered over for a yarn with him. He’s a very friendly bloke who comes across as pretty laid back.

I showed him the part of my script that was specific to him which covered that he trained as a Clinical Psychologist and worked for over two decades in the areas of forensic psychology and family therapy.

In 2010, as a result of his passion for science and science education, Nigel was invited to become an associate of the world leading Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study at the University of Otago. In 2012 he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to psychology.

He’s written eight books which have now been published in 19 countries and 10 languages.

His television career has spanned almost a decade and he’s presented a number of series.

In 2016, along with Arwen O’Connor and Mitchell Hawkes he co-founded a production company, Ruckus, and the team have since made numerous primetime television series including Mind Over Money, What Next, and The Curious Mind.

In late 2018 he decided it was time for something a bit different . With his business partner Neela Hatangadi, he co-founded a tech startup to develop a revolutionary parenting app.

He had a quick scan of the page and said with a cheeky grin, “That’s WAY too much information, I’d much rather you said, he

was born, he’s still alive and then make the rest up.”

This is going to be a fun night I thought to myself, he’s my type of guy.

And I was right, it was a fun night, he is a funny bloke. One thing that surprised me a wee bit was how much he swore.

Three minutes into his presentation he dropped his first ‘F-bomb’.

They were dropped pretty regularly before he addressed them, maybe a third of the way through his talk.

“As you can tell I don’t mind swearing he said, it’s just a word and it’s brilliant for accentuating a point or sentence.”

In his household it was tolerated as long as it was used in the right context. So, if one of his boys stubbed his toe and said “Aww f*#k” he was okay with it.

The one major rule he seemed to have around the ‘F-bomb’ was that it wasn’t to be directed at anyone. “F*#k you” was not acceptable.

I’ve got to say I agree that it certainly does add some punch to a sentence and often some humour as well, but I try, and steer clear of it for two main reasons. It doesn’t sit quite right with me to drop them around ladies or wee kids and if I drop one while I’m on air, the team from Performance and Culture would be getting in touch for a rather serious chat.

Auckland what would happen if I dropped one on air, his immediate and rather swift reply was, “Is this hypothetical or did you just do it”? Followed by “Phew” when I replied with “Hypothetical”.

Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t twist my face up in anguish when somebody drops them in front of me and I can rain them down in spades when having a few lagers with the boys.

I posed the question on my Book of Faces page, “What’s your

thoughts around the F-bomb?”

The majority of people were okay with it as long as it was used in context and as long as it wasn’t every second word. Some suggested there were better word options available and didn’t like it at all.

I think it comes down to whatever you’re comfortable with and although times have certainly changed you still need to consider others and the situation before you go dropping them

left, right and centre.

A bit of personal interior design can do wonders for the soul W

hen clients come into my office and talk about their desperate need to change, I always catch a spark of fear in their eyes. It’s there only for a moment, but it’s there all the same.

They are saying: “I don’t know if I can do this, I want to change, but don’t believe I can”.

Changing a habit (or several), changing life situations, relationships, jobs, changing something about themselves, borderlines on the terrifying.

This is BIG stuff. And in being ‘big stuff’, it automatically gets placed in the too hard and painful bucket, making any desired, positive change joyless.

Can you imagine if it was fun to change your habits?

Say you wanted to lose weight.

Would you associate the changes you need to make to your diet, exercise and lifestyle as joyful?

Not many would. That’s why it’s so gruelling. Losing weight is seen as being painful, difficult, unpleasant, depriving and, let’s

face it, joyless.

‘Change’ easily becomes a repulsive word.

Change implies discomfort.

It means I have to do things differently and that means extra work. I have to behave differently, reorganise my time, do things I don’t want to do, deprive myself of soothing pleasures. I have to make decisions that I don’t necessarily feel at ease making.

I have to cut things out and add others things in. It’s a complete upheaval.

Is it any wonder that I register fear in my clients’ eyes when they talk about ‘the need to change’?

As soon as I recognise this hesitation or fear in my client, my immediate response is usually “Great! Let’s have fun doing

this” and it’s met with a look that says perhaps I’m the one who needs a therapist!

Fun. Joy. Laughter. Delight. Excitement. Pleasure. Happiness.

Luxury. Bliss. Experimental.

Curiosity. What if we associated these words to those little habits or irritations we wish to alter?

After all, the change we seek is for our betterment, is it not?

Why should feeling empowered be regarded as punishment? That’s crazy, right?!

I’m not saying that all change is easy, sometimes it’s dreadfully difficult. But it need not be soul crushing.

It’s like rearranging a room in your house. You’re ready for a new look, need to clean behind the sofa, you want a different feel to the place. First, you’re moving furniture to see where it might look better. You notice all the dust balls. You don’t leave them there! You get the vacuum cleaner out and you clear it up.

You wipe down skirting boards that have been hidden for a few years.

When we start out changing something with ourselves, we might notice that we have got a bit too comfortable. Making a shift brings a few things up to light that really are not serving us. We need a bit of dusting, as it were.

You find things you thought you’d lost and it’s fun to be reunited with some of these.

Have you ever found these little treasures you thought had gone?

It’s lovely to reconnect with them. In the same way it’s lovely to reconnect with something we haven’t done in a while that was good for us on many levels, once upon a time.

You may find bits that you don’t like and you deal to them.

You collect the rubbish and waste no time throwing them in the bin. What you no longer need you can ditch, right away.

You will notice that some uncomfortable stuff surfaces as you start to change and you may have to face some truths, and ditch some of the rubbish in your life.

You might add a few extra touches to refresh the room and make it more inviting or comfortable. You may try something new and discover it’s fun and good for you too.

The end result is the same room with a different look and feel. It’s revived, remodelled and cleaner. A little remodelling brings the room to life. And you feel a sense of achievement and joy as you lounge in your new space.

Now change like that? That’s a far “fresher” approach, don’t you think? A little bit of personal interior design can do wonders for the soul.

The new 2021 Street Scrambler delivers the unmistakeable scrambler style and silhouette, born from the original Triumph Scramblers which started the entire desert racing scene in the 1960s.

Maintaining that timeless DNA, the Street Scrambler features distinctive wide-spaced forks, high level twin exhaust, minimal bodywork, wide handlebars and wire spoked wheels with black hubs and rims.

n always very reliable indicator of a test vehicles ride quality, quietness and comfort during longer drives is when ‘she who must be obeyed’ is occupying the front passenger seat.

She’s always very keen to immerse herself in a good book when the above factors properly align.

They certainly did in this latest, top of the range, Outback Touring during the drive to Queenstown for Anzac weekend, with the Tarras lunch stop seeming to arrive much sooner than expected.

What’s more, said reader, so comfort-

ably accommodated in her multi-adjustable Nappa leather-clad, heated seat, with concert-quality sound at low volume from the Harmon Kardon sound system (the single CD player took a little finding – it’s within the centre console) and lots of light including that through the sun-roof, was able to totally concentrate on her book, even over the Lindis!

Let’s look at why.

For a start, it’s a fine handling vehicle, stable, predictable yet with the ability to change direction in a suitably eager manner. There’s excellent body control as well, with less roll than you expect for a vehicle with a 213mm ground clearance and built to take on a wide variety of terrain.

The result, and not forgetting the contribution of the constant all-wheeldrive, being that you can enter any corner (irrespective of whether its seal or shingle) and leave with a smile on your face and with the reader still happily engrossed in her book!

Then at open road cruise, engine and indeed other noises are conspicuous only by their being almost absent. This is one very well insulated and comfortable vehicle.

There’s a three-model range, all sharing a new platform and body.

They start with the entry-level Outback at $49,990. Next up is the mid-range Outback X, which adds adventurer-friendly features including water-resistant upholstery, heated front and rear seats, power rear tailgate and sat-nav for $54,990.

The Touring, as driven costs $57,490. (all quoted prices are plus ORCs). The 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine is no longer

available in New Zealand, so currently here all Outback are powered by a revised version of the 2.5-litre Boxer engine.

Power is now 138kW at 5800rpm (previously 129kW) while torque increases from 235 to 245Nm and this now occurs between 3400 and 4600rpm.

There’s a very smooth, step-less delivery of this to all four wheels through the now 8-step Lineatronic constant-velocity-transmission.

This results in a reassuringly solid, rather than racy, performance with better than before take-off and overtaking acceleration, which are the only times you hear the engine working.

There’s better fuel efficiency as well.

The claimed overall figure is 7.3L/100km, which was what the trip computer showed when fuelling up in Cromwell to both check this out and also avoid the loaded Queenstown fuel prices.

The litres to refuel tallied up exactly with this.

A high definition, 11.6-inch centre information display with vertical orientation and operation like a smartphone dominates the dash. It centralises and simplifies many controls.

The results just keep coming in gold for members of Ashburton Dojo.

The strong karate group took a team of competitors back up to Christchurch last weekend to compete in the Canterbury Westland Karate Championships which were held at the Ara Institute on Sunday – and again, there was plenty of smiles for the trip back home to Ashburton.

Collectively, the group won six gold medals, two silvers and three bronze, with Brooke Edmond again showing her promise in the circle with two gold medals for the day in the female 8-9-year-old, development Kata and Kumite to follow her good results at the New Zealand championships a week earlier.

Cargill Henderson was also in solid form picking up three gold medals across the day, claiming gold in the men’s 18 years and over development Kumite, gold in the 35 to 44-year-old development Kata and also Kumite.

The team’s sixth gold went to Carina Lupse, who won the female 10 to 11-year-old premier Kumite and also picked up a bronze in the Kata in the same division.

Madison Edmond (bronze 1011 Premier Kumite), Isabel Wang (silver 12-13 Premier Kumite) and Joshua Cannan (silver 12-13 Premier Kumite, bronze 12-13 Premier Kata) also claimed individual medals at the championships.

As well as competing individually, some members joined forces to compete in teams event with two gold medals to smile about.

In the mixed 10-13-year-old Team Kata, Isabel Wang, Madison Edmond and Carina Lupse claimed victory while the same trio also picked up gold in the female 10-13-year-old Team Kumite.

The results, coupled with the excellent performances at the recent National Championships have the Ashburton Dojo in high spirits as they build towards the Shotokan Championships which will be held in Tinwald on Sunday, May 30, before a big team heads south for both the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships and Otago and Southland Championship in Dunedin on Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6.

Match next week The annual Celebs wheelchair basketball match against the Canterbury Wheelchair Basketball team is actually next Saturday, May 15 not this weekend as previously reported.

While hosted at the Basketball Mid Canterbury Stadium, the match – which is a permanent fixture on the Wheels Week calendar each year is organised by Pauline Paterson – former president of Wheelchair Basketball New Zealand. Ennor back for the final Since sustaining a knee injury in October last year, Braydon Ennor hasn’t played any professional rugby.

But after just two games at club level, the All Blacks midfielder will return to the Super Rugby arena on the biggest stage possible.

Ennor has been named in the Crusaders’ matchday 23 for their Super Rugby Aotearoa final against the Chiefs in Christchurch this weekend, set to provide utility value off the bench in the 23 jersey.

Ennor ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the North vs South match late last year. It was an injury that, while it looked innocuous, Ennor immediately had a pretty good idea of the damage he had done.

“I knew straight away on the field,” Ennor recalled.

“I think Sammy Whitelock was screaming at me to get up, and my knee sort of moved as I tried to get up.

“It was just the ACL that went; I was quite lucky. I had a few other things in the knee that got repaired in surgery, but that had happened a year or two prior.

“Whether that was the cause of the ACL going it-

self, I don’t know. But it’s all cleaned up now and I’m ready to roll.”

It wasn’t the first time he had suffered a serious ACL injury, rupturing the ligament in his other leg during his final year of high school.

While he knew what he was in for in terms of recovery, Ennor has been eager to get back out onto the field, and admitted he had been discussing when he might be able to return weeks ago.

“I was talking to the physio about my return to play. Everything had been going really well, and this was before Jack [Goodhue]’s injury.

“So, we talked about playing a couple of games of club rugby before the final, but if I wasn’t picked, no worries and I’d just carry on to trans-Tasman.”

With Goodhue being unavailable after he suffered significant damage in his left knee during the Crusaders’ round seven win over the Hurricanes, Leicester Fainga’anuku has been deputising in the midfield.

Despite Ennor being available for the final, Fainga’anuku will remain in the starting side after what has been a strong campaign for him.

And the nominees are...

Sporting excellence will be both acknowledged and rewarded at tonight’s annual Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards. Matt Markham works his way through the nominees in each of the categories. Today it’s the turn of Senior Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sports Team of the Year and this year’s recipients of the Volunteer Awards.

Senior Sportsperson of the Year Rhys Cromie – Tennis Rhys Cromie lives and breathes the sport of tennis. A permanent part of the landscape at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre for close on two decades, Cromie’s name has shone brightly in the lights since almost the day he first picked up a racquet. But this year he achieved something quite remarkable – a 10th Gala Cup singles title. The pinnacle of the sport locally, Cromie is now the most successful player in the history of the tournament. Cromie was also a member of this year’s County Ashburton team who finished second in the Tennis Canterbury Premier Competition, he also played a part in helping Mid Canterbury retain the Browning Shield for the eighth year in a row. A passionate and dedicated member of the tennis community, Cromie’s achievements on the court now stand him as arguably the best tennis player this region has seen.

Tawny Wagstaff – Speed Skiing Flying down the side of a mountain at speeds of 175 kilometres per hour might not sound like everyone’s cup of tea, but for Tawny Wagstaff, it’s a way of life. And he’s really good at it. Competing overseas for extended periods of time, Wagstaff managed to secure himself a spot as the fourth-ranked person in the world in his field through some excellent results at the World Cup which was held in Sweden early this year. After an interrupted time of competing due to Covid, Wagstaff

went in fresh and produced some excellent results to claim his position near the top of the world rankings.

Kimberley Bird – Equestrian It’s been a breakout 12 months for equestrian rider, Kimberley Bird. The

New Zealand National Premier Championship Class is one of the most prestigious classes in New Zealand and is the only competition that requires competitors to jump for three days over the extreme height. Requiring an extreme amount of skill, focus and dedication to the cause, it’s tough – but Kimberley managed to win it to even further advance her stock in the national, and international equestrian scene. As well as winning the Premier Championship, Kimberley also finished second at the National Grand Prix Championship, won the Waikato Premier League Grand Prix and the Canterbury Grand Prix series.

Many of these events have seen Kimberley competing against the best riders in the country, Olympians in fact. So, her results really do speak for themselves.

Shania Harrison-Lee – Shooting A potential crack at the Commonwealth Games awaits sharpshooter, Shania Harrison-Lee. It’s been another whirlwind 12 months of success for the young shooter, and her position on the national and international scene has only extended further to see her right near the top of the sport. In the past 12 months, Shania won the Secondary Schools’ National Title, set new records in the Open Men and Women’s Olympic Trophy at the Outdoor Nationals, where she claimed second in the open event as well as being top female and junior competitor. Shania is the current New Zealand Women’s and Junior Prone 50m record holder as well as being ranked the top junior in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Her scores currently have her sitting qualified for the Commonwealth Games in India next year, where she would fly both the New Zealand and Mid Canterbury flag with aplomb.

Junior Sports Team Ashburton College 1st XI Boys Hockey The Ashburton College 1st XI boys’ hockey side had an outstanding season and proved to be the form team of the competition. Boasting a really strong mix of senior players, and new members to the squad they quickly became a forceful team unit who were winners both on and off the field. Playing in a highly competitive Christchurch Secondary Schools’ competition, the side played 13 games across the season and were undefeated with 12 wins and a draw – scoring a massive 73 goals, while only conceding 13 throughout the season to win the Canterbury Secondary School League Division One title.

Ashburton College New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Smallbore Shooting Team A fifth consecutive victory at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Shooting Championship was the crowning glory again for this incredible team of sharp-shooters. But this time, they beat themselves as well – setting a new team record to surpass the previous best – incidentally also set by the side. Across the board the side produced excellent individual results, which put together led to their outstanding, record-breaking score and with new blood emerging through the ranks the side look well placed heading into the future

Mid Canterbury Under 17 Boys’ Cricket team There was no I in team when it came to the Mid Canterbury Under 17 boys’ cricket side. Winners of the Canterbury Regional Under 17 Tournament in Timaru, they swept all before them, winning four out of their four matches with the last day being washed out.

But while individuals might have led the way, it was the team spirit, camaraderie and attitude which played the biggest role in this young side achieving a truly impressive result for Mid Canterbury Cricket.

Volunteer Awards Rose Thomson – Equestrian Rose has been involved with Ashburton Area Show Jumping since 1987 when the area decided to form its own branch.

Rose was the first secretary, which was a role that she held for several years. In the 1990s a new discipline was introduced into NZ Equestrian called Show Hunter. Rose decided that she would like to know more about this, and trained to become a Show Hunter Judge and course designer. This involved Rose touring the country to learn from the experts. Nearly 30 years on, Rose is still designing courses, judging competitions and teaching people to become judges and designers all in her own time. Rose is passionate about Show Hunter, and is not afraid to stand up for her sport and demand adequate show hunter rings with great ground conditions. She is the current Ashburton Show Hunter convenor and spends many hours painting the jump rails and decorating jumps for shows so that they look world class. Rose and her husband often sponsor show hunter classes at local shows. Rose attends the National ESNZ conference every year and keeps the local committee up to date with rules and regulations. She does all this without having her own children competing.

Her quiet nature keeps everyone focused and Sally is still clearing up after shows when everyone else is celebrating the success of the show. Sally is one of those people who works tirelessly in the background and does not seek any recognition.

Karla Newlands – Netball Netball in Mid Canterbury is very much what it is now, thanks in large part to all the work Karla Newlands has put in over the years. During the tough period of last year where sport was halted, Karla’s hard work and leadership was vital in ensuring that a season was held post lockdowns. These efforts, plus the years of service prior to that, saw Karla awarded a life membership from Mid Canterbury Netball last year. Her 25 years of involvement includes the last seven where she has been president of Mid Canterbury Netball, making tough decisions but always with the best interests of the sport at heart.

As well as her presidency, Karla was on the Mid Canterbury Netball Board for 12 years, been a representative of Mid Canterbury and Centre, Zone and National level as well as being a player, a selector and coach of various representative teams and also a Netball New Zealand Centre talent spotter. These efforts have seen Karla awarded many accolades for her years of service to the sport – including National Netball Volunteer Award for Administrator of the Year and a Netball New Zealand Service Award.

She’s demonstrated unique commitment to the newly established sport here in Mid Canterbury since it was first introduced here locally in 2019. Mitchell has been active in the recruitment of players – thus ensuring the growth of the sport and has been one of the real driving forces behind organising sessions. Always welcoming when it comes to assisting players both new and old, Adrienne is the first to arrive and last to leave at most sessions and couples that with being an excellent exponent of the sport herself when she makes it onto the court. The success of the sport could not have enjoyed such a rapid rise to fame on the local stage without the dedicated efforts of a volunteer like Adrienne and the sport’s organisers here locally, are deeply indebted to her.

May 7 Methven Rugby 125th Jubilee The Methven Rugby Club is celebrating 125 years from May 7-9.

Registration for the formal events has closed but the public is invited to come along on Saturday May 8 to watch all the club’s sides in action.

Academy Award package at Regent A

movie described as “an acting master class” is one of three included in an Academy Awards package at the Regent Cinema, Ashburton.

The Father, starring Olivia Coleman and Sir Anthony Hopkins, tells the story of an elderly man who tries to make sense of his changing circumstances as he refuses all assistance from his daughter.

For his interpretation, Sir Anthony won the 2021 Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Donna Favel, co-owner of the Regent, says it made sense to package the Academy Award movies together as the awards were “unprecedented, unique and surprising”.

The second movie is Minari, which follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American dream.

The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but loving grandmother.

Yuh-Jung Youn, who plays the grandmother, won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Minari will start screening on Thursday, May 13.

The Regent will also re-screen Nomadland, which chronicles the story of a 60-year-old woman who embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern day nomad.

Nomadland was the most successful movie at the awards, winning Best Director, Best Picture and Best Actress (Frances McDormand). Its encore season starts on Saturday (May 8).

Mid Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competitions kicked off for the new season this week, but teams will have to wait another week before they start putting points on the board.

The new look competition, which comes as a result of Mid Canterbury Hockey electing to hold their own competitions instead of competing in South Canterbury this season, doesn’t officially begin until next week, but teams took to the turf on Monday and Tuesday night to dust off the

cobwebs ahead of a busy season of play.

The return of Division One hockey has brought about the return of a number of players to the game in the district with many familiar faces returning to the turf for local, high-level hockey and not one of the games over the two nights of play disappointed with some excellent matches played out.

On Monday night the women kicked the season off, with Hampstead and Tinwald locking horns in the early match and it was Tinwald who found themselves on the right side of the score sheet, winning 3-0.

They led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. but bagged two goals before halftime and were then able to shut Hampstead out for the second half to walk off with the win.

Goals for the Tinwald side came courtesy of Jess Pitney, Aleisha Stoddart and Stacey McKerchar.

The night’s second match saw Methven square off with Wakanui and a goal to Kimberley Campion in the second period put the Wakanui side in front. It wasn’t to be though, with Methven scoring two goals in the second half through Sarah O’Grady and Hayley Dampney to grab a comefrom-behind victory.

The competition kicks off proper next week where in women’s action, Wakanui will play Tinwald and Hampstead will squareoff with Methven. And in men’s matches, Tinwald and Allenton will begin the night before an allWakanui affair in the other match when Team White takes on Team Black.

On Tuesday night, Allenton kicked off their campaign against a strong-looking Wakanui Black side and were unable to repel the challenge, losing 0-9.

Through some slick play in the middle of the turf, Wakanui created plenty of opportunities and more often than not capitalised on them too.

Doubles to Daniel Bennett, Tim Harford and Hayden Sinclair set the tone while Scott Marshall, Jeremy Moore and Nathan Nordqvist also made their way onto the scoresheet.
