Flag turn-out pleases Mayor

The turnout of registered voters, nearly 50 per cent, for the first flag referendum was very positive, Ashburton mayor Angus McKay says.

Kyle Lockwood’s black, white and blue flag was announced as the preliminary winner of the first flag referendum on Friday.

The Electoral Commission received 1,527,042 votes, which included 148,022 informal votes and 2476 invalid votes. It

was 48.16 per cent of registered voters.

Mr McKay said while he did not want to reveal which flag he liked best he was pleased to see how many people voted in the first referendum.

“It has been a very good thing that the people of New Zealand have a chance to decide whether they want a new flag or not.”

There was a small chance the preferred flag could change between now and the final result on Tuesday.

“I look forward to seeing which one is

actually going to win,” Mr McKay said.

Until the final decision, he did not know if he wanted the flag to change or not, Mr McKay said.

It would depend on which flag won, but he was very supportive of people getting the choice to decide if they wanted a new flag.

Janis Joplin’s Porsche sold at auction Janis Joplin’s customised Porsche has fetched $US1.8 million ($NZ2.7 million) at an auction in New York. The singer purchased the white 1965 Porsche 356C Cabriolet in 1968 and asked an artist friend to personalise the vehicle with a colourful mural. Joplin’s family members took ownership of the sportscar after her drug overdose death in 1970, and allowed it to be displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio from the early 1990s. However, the vehicle headed to the auction block at Sotheby’s New York where it sold for more than three times the expected amount. “Janis Joplin’s 356C is without question one of the most important Porsches of all time,” Ian Kelleher, managing director of RM Sotheby’s West Coast Division, said.

Wild night in Wellington for AC/DC AC/DC performed a concert plagued by technical problems in a gale in windy Wellington, but finished to rave reviews.

Strong winds and rain lashed the New Zealand capital on Saturday night when the band played at Westpac Stadium but the cannon bangs and fireworks that ended the show could be heard across the city. Reviewer Simon Sweetman wrote that after the first track, Brian Johnson used up most of the night’s banter while telling the crowd to wait patiently for a technical problem to be fixed. The band sang Shoot to Thrill but a guitaramp issue continued and there was a 40-minute break during which the band left the stage.

Hunter joins tree debate “Our Rach” has joined the debate over the fate of a West Auckland kauri. Contractors last week arrived at the Titirangi property of John Lenihan and Jane Greensmith to cut down the tree. In March, activist Michael Tavares spent three days suspended in the tree amid public outcry for its protection. Lenihan and Greensmith planned to remove the tree, which is not protected, to build two houses. They had resource consent from the Auckland Council to do so, but the tree was given a reprieve so neighbours could buy the land.

That had not happened, so they had resumed their original plan, they said on Thursday.

Hunter posted her displeasure on her Facebook page at the weekend.

“Is the kauri being threatened again? I thought we went thur (sic) this already!

Honestly just leave the kauri ALONE! We all know the the history of this magnificent tree.”

Hollywood preps for Star Wars premiere Hollywood is preparing for what could be the largest movie premiere in its history tomorrow night (NZ time) when the hugely anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens is screened for VIP audiences in three separate cinemas amid tight security. At one of the Hollywood Boulevard location - the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre, where the first Star Wars premiered in 1977 - fans are already camped out, eagerly awaiting their turn when the film opens for regular folks next Friday. One fan, Lavonne Dominguez, wasn’t interested in simply buying a ticket online to see the movie in her local cinema. She and several friends who drove up from Orange County wanted an out-of-this-world experience.

“I need to see it in an epic place with people who are just as excited about Star Wars as me,” said Dominguez, 32, who was among about 150 devotees in line at the Chinese, occasionally ducking under awnings to avoid a passing shower. Several fans began holding court outside the cinema last weekend. Many of them previously lined up at the same location to be among the first to see the Star Wars prequel films, beginning in 1999. The fans must log at least 24 hours in line to gain entry to the cinema’s first public showing of the film, but those who spend more time in line will earn preferential seat selection.

Auction in reverse A brand new Fiat Punto will go under the hammer next week in a 60- second reverse auction, with the price dropping by the second. The no reserve auction is run by Dropit, a newly launched Kiwi company who want to add an element of excitement to online auctions. Dropit auctions begin at the recommended retail price for an item, and drop at a steady rate throughout the minute, stopping when someone swipes their phone, thereby making the winning bid for it. This means the Fiat, which starts at $16,490, will become $282 cheaper every second until someone bids and ends the auction. Chief executive Peter Howell said the premise was all about creating brand engagement through making shopping into a game. “We just wanted to make a cool shopping experience. We wanted to create an app that was fun and exciting - there’s a lot of boring stuff out there.”

Record-breaking crowd

Saturday night’s Christmas in the Park exceeded expectations with more than 8000 people crowding into the Ashburton Domain for a night of music, food and fireworks.

The third annual event, which was organised by the Ashburton Christian Ministers’ Association, had entertainment from all over New Zealand.

Promoter Carmen Lye said the night was a huge success and she received lots of good feedback.

“It went really, really well. It was probably the best one so far.”

They were really able to connect with the community, she said.

The main purpose of the event was for everyone to have an enjoyable night but also to send the message about the true meaning of Christmas.

There were a lot of people involved from sponsors to volunteers, performers and the crowds.

“It added to the whole community spirit.

“It wouldn’t have happened without any of them.”

More than 8000 people attended, which was the most they had ever had, she said.

The highlights for Mrs Lye were the music, the local talent and the fireworks – which wowed a lot of people.

The majority of the volunteers were from the New Life Church, she said.

Saturday night’s event could not have gone any better and she hoped they would be able to bring more of the same next year, Mrs Lye said.

Severe weather hits district

Mid Canterbury was hit by wind, rain, hail and a tornado as a severe storm made its way along Canterbury and North Otago yesterday.

MetService severe weather forecaster Allister Gorman said the tornado, which was seen from the Lismore/Mayfield area, had a fair bit of strength behind it and probably would have lasted for at least a couple of minutes and covered a few kilometres.

New Zealand would only see half a dozen tornados a year and most lasted less than a minute, he said.

The severe storm was caused by a significant cooling of the upper atmosphere in the South Island which allowed a deep convection to form.

There was also quite a bit of hail which would have caused damage to some crops, Mr Gorman said.

Lismore resident Phillippa Fleming said she was outside when she saw the tornado spring up a few kilometres from her house at about 3.15pm.

“It looked like it had some power behind it.”

Hunt for wanted man continues The hunt for a wanted man believed to be connected to the disappearance of Lance John Murphy is continuing and police say they are following a number of leads.

Mr Murphy, 56, was last seen leaving the BP station in Waiuku in his red Mazda on November 21.

Five days later, police found his Mazda at a property less than 2km away. Mr Murphy’s blood was found through his car.

Police revealed they were looking for Steven Brent Gunbie, 47, in connection

with Mr Murphy’s disappearance.

They said the Mazda was found at Gunbie’s residence and appealed for anyone with information to come forward. They believed Gunbie had access to firearms and a Counties Manukau police spokeswoman said yesterday the search for Gunbie and investigation into Mr Murphy’s disappearance, named Operation Cosmos, was “progressing”.

“We have had some good information coming through,” she said.

New dairy workers in pipeline

A new initiative to get more people working in Canterbury’s agricultural sector was launched in Ashburton on Friday.

Canterbury dairy farmers banded together with Aoraki Polytechnic to develop the Dairy Pipeline Project as a way to alleviate a skills shortage in the Canterbury dairy industry.

The announcement of the Dairy Pipeline Project coincided with the graduation of the first eight trainee dairy farm workers who had been Ministry of Social Development clients but are all going onto employment as a result of the programme.

The group of eight will be the first employees of the Canterbury Farm Capability Society Incorporated and will be placed on farms that belong to the society.

The graduates have just completed an intensive seven-week residential pre-employment training programme delivered by Aoraki Polytechnic.

Fifty people including the graduates, families and industry and government representatives attended the launch at the Ashburton Rural Training Hub last week.

Guest speaker, Rangitata MP and associate minister for Social Development and Primary Industries Jo Goodhew, said the project was a great start in getting nearly 50,000 more people needed in the industry by 2025.

By 2025 there would need to be 400,000 people in the primary sector when there was only 355,000 at present, she said.

Southbridge resident Peter Binnie said he chose the Kyle Lockwood flag as his first choice but he did not really mind if the flag was changed or not.

Mike McKnight, of Ashburton, said he did not want the flag to change but he had picked the blue, black and white flag as his first choice.

The second most preferred flag was the red, white and blue flag, followed by Red Peak, the black and white silver fern and the koru.

Playground fire The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to the Ashburton Domain at 10.09pm on Saturday after the seat of a swing caught on fire. However, the blaze had extinguished itself by the time emergency services arrived.

Lightning starts fire Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade and Ashburton Rural Fire Force attended a fire which was believed to have been caused by a lightning strike hitting a fence on Hills Road at 11.32am yesterday. The fire ignited in two spots and caused a small amount of damage to the fence and to some trees. Fire crews were there for about 30 minutes.

there’s a future for them in primary industries.”

Dairy had been hit hard recently but the forecast showed the future was looking good, Mrs Goodhew said.

Canterbury Farm Capability Society member Alister Body said the idea for the project was conceived by a group of people in the agricultural industry wanting to get more people interested in the field.

The programme had worked so far and now the graduates were going to be employed by farmers in the area, he said.

“We’re very proud of our graduates.”

Phase two of the project would see high schools feed students into the programme.

Following the merger between Aoraki Polytechnic and Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of Technology at the end of this

year, the new institution CPIT Aoraki will be a key partner in the initiative going forward.

The Dairy Pipeline Project is the first project to start under the Government’s Sector Workplace Engagement Programme which aims to understand the skills and employment issues facing employers in various sectors and to co-develop appropriate and industry-led solutions to the identified issues.

■ NZ COMEDY LEGEND DIES

Tributes flow for Jon Gadsby The family of legendary comedian Jon Gadsby has thanked the public for their tributes, and has described the funnyman as “one of New Zealand’s iconic characters and part of the fabric of New Zealand’s culture”.

Gadsby died Saturday night at 7.45pm aged 62, just two months after his family revealed he was battling cancer.

A statement was released on behalf of the family thanking the public for their support.

“The family and friends of Jon Gadsby truly appreciate the support and sympathy that has been expressed since his passing,” it said. “The family wishes to thank everyone who has been part of Jon’s journey since being diagnosed with a brain tumour in September.”

Gadsby was one of New Zealand’s iconic characters and part of the fabric of New Zealand’s culture, the family said.

“His different personas and characters that he played during his television career reflect the Kiwi culture of the time and his humour never dated.

“Jon loved to tell stories and al-

Jon Gadsby ways had a yarn to share around the family table and his quick wit meant many a meal was filled with laughter. And even more so when Jon got his guitars out for a sing-along.”

Gadsby had two children, David and Emma, who were “very special to him”.

“He took great pride in the young adults they have become and in their achievements,” the statement said.

The family also praised the

outstanding care he received since his cancer diagnosis, from family and friends, the medical profession and Nurse Maude Hospice in Christchurch.

Funeral arrangements were currently being organised by the family, the statement said, and while details were still to be finalised it was likely to be held on Thursday.

“The family would appreciate some time to grieve in private over the coming days.”

Gadsby has been remembered for his talent and for “changing Kiwi TV comedy forever”.

Fans and former colleagues of Gadsby have been paying tribute to the comedian on social media, pushing his name into the top trends in New Zealand.

Actor and comedian Mark Hadlow said: “With his talent and endless generosity Jon Gadsby helped change Kiwi TV comedy forever. Thank you Jon. Too soon.”

Comedian and 7 Days host Jeremy Corbett posted: “RIP Jon Gadsby. I grew up on A Week of It and McPhail & Gadsby. V funny man.”

A woman is in hospital after a fire truck rushing to a job crashed into the back of a car she was driving in South Auckland. The truck was travelling with its lights and sirens on when it drove into the back of the car at the intersection.

Counties Manukau Police Senior Sergeant Jeremy Field said the crash happened at 11.56am. “A fire engine was on its way to an incident and a vehicle in front has seen the fire engine coming from behind and braked and as a result the fire engine has ran into the vehicle,” he said.

Asbestos diagnosis Deanna Trevarthen was meant to welcome her first baby into the world this year. Instead, just months after an unsuccessful round of fertility treatment, she started feeling unwell. A few days into a romantic Fiji getaway with partner Greg Robertson earlier this year, Deanna became so sick she sought medical help as soon as she returned to New Zealand.

The eventual diagnosis was pleural mesothelioma, or asbestos cancer.

At 44 Deanna, aka Dee, is one of the youngest people in New Zealand to fight the cancer prevalent in older men who had worked in electrical, building and demolition work. The cancer, breathed into the lungs, had been lying dormant in the Auckland woman’s body until the Fiji holiday.

Four arrested Four people were arrested at Christmas in the Park in Auckland on Saturday night. But police were pleased with the general behaviour of the crowd. The event, the 22nd Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park, was held at the Auckland Domain and was an alcohol-free event.

“There were minimal issues during the concert and good use was made of public transport for patrons travelling to and from the venue,” said Auckland Police operations manager Inspector Peter Gibson. The event would continue to be alcohol-free in future.

Dust woes not council’s problem

With a hot, dry summer on the horizon, some rural property owners know they’ll be adding another weather-related hazard to their lives – dust from shingle roads billowing into their homes.

It’s a problem, however, where property owners have to find their own solutions and foot the bill.

The roads might belong to the Ashburton District Council, but providing solutions to dust is not the council’s job, said roading manager Brian Fauth.

People buy properties knowing they’re on a shingle road and knowing that dry conditions are likely to see clouds of dust generated whenever a vehicle drives past their home, he said.

While the council tried to use a shingle-clay mix on the roads that generated the least possible amount of dust, it walked a fine line between providing cost effective surfaces against those that created a minimal amount of dust.

Property owners fed up with dusty roads had two options to resolve the problem, having the

stretch of road outside their gate sealed or having it sprayed with a vegetable oil product to ensure dust stayed on the road and not in the air, Mr Fauth said.

Both options, however, would have to be funded by the property owner, not the council and both required council approval.

“You can’t just go out there and put engine oil on the road now,

you need to apply to the council first and the material used must be applied by an expert. We’ll arrange to have the road graded before you have it applied,” he said.

Each summer the council deals with about half a dozen applications from rural property owners to have their house frontages sprayed with an oil-like product.

Club treasurer Lyall Graham said they sold 94 which was fewer than their usual number of about 110.

However, they were still able to raise $940 which would be given to community projects.

The trees were sourced from Flock Hill Station, which is a four-hour round trip from Ashburton.

The club sells the trees each year as a way to give something back to the community.

Hakatere Round Table No. 78 is a club for men aged between 18 and 45 and they are always looking for more young members, he said.

Children in Ashburton are continuing to get their B4 School Checks in their hundreds.

Part of a nationwide health programme, B4 School Checks are designed to pick up on developmental and behavioural problems in four-year-olds.

In the last financial year (July 2014 to June 2015) there were 365 B4 School Checks completed in Ashburton, an uptake of 94 per cent – four per cent over the national target.

Allenton Medical Centre practice nurse manager Andrea Kinley said the numbers of children getting checked remained steady.

Five health practitioners were trained to complete the checks at the centre and saw around 15 children each month.

In November, 14 children underwent the assessment and so far this month there have been four completed, Mrs Kinley said.

Undertaken in the first few months of a child turning four, the B4 School Check helps to identify any health or developmental issues so they can be addressed be-

fore starting school.

Children are also instructed to draw pictures and build blocks, and coordination and sleep patterns are also checked.

Earlier this year Canterbury District Health Board project manager Alison Young congratulated local health services for exceeding the 90 per cent target.

“The results are ultimately good news for families and their children’s health and wellbeing. If a child can’t see or hear as well as they should or has an undetected health condition, this can hinder their ability to learn,” she said.

Earlier this week Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said latest data showed the B4 School Check programme was well on track to reach more than 56,000 children across New Zealand this financial year.

First quarter figures for this year show 27 per cent of the target population received the check in the three months ending September 2015.

More than 300,000 children have benefited from the programme since its inception in 2008.

Peas and spuds for Christmas lunch

New potatoes and fresh peas are a must for Christmas dinner and the volunteers at the Plains Museum have got you covered.

The group planted about a hectare in Nadine potatoes and half a hectare of peas as a fundraiser for the museum, on a piece of land leased from the Tinwald Domain board.

“We use the money we raise to run the museum – the costs go up every year, especially the licence fees,” volunteer John French said.

The potato harvest got under way last week and the results of the hard work put into the crop have paid off.

This year has also delivered a bumper pea crop on the back of last season’s disappointing results.

“It’s probably the best crop we’ve ever had,” Alan Lilley said.

Pea lovers can pick a 10 litre bucket for $5 from the paddock behind the scout den on Maronan Road between 7am and midday, and buy potatoes for $10 for five kilograms, from the Plains Museum in the Tinwald Domain.

“We only pick peas in the morn-

ing because they get soft if it gets too hot, but if the gate is open there’ll be someone here,” Mr French said.

“People need to get in and get them soon though, while they are at their best.”

The produce is also available from the Green Grocer in Tinwald.

Childcare centre celebrates Christmas ABC Allenton childcare centre held their annual Christmas party at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

Centre manager Leonie McBride said this was the first year they had held their party outside the centre and it was a great success.

They had about 50 families there for a picnic which equated to more than 100 people.

The reason they decided to move it out of the centre was because they would have more room to have all the families as well as holding it outside of work time because many parents worked full time.

“It was really nice.”

The wind and cold did not dampen anyone’s spirits and all the children enjoyed themselves, she said.

The children performed a concert and Santa paid a visit, which included a lolly scramble.

A voting system that turns losers into winners Sue Newman

N

ew Zealand’s astronomically expensive New Zealand flag referendum proves just one thing – Kyle Lockwood designs flags with public appeal.

While the winner after votes were counted was his black, white and blue version, it’s just 1 per cent ahead in the vote count.

With thousands of votes still to count and adjustments to be made for the rising number of spoiled or invalid votes, the only thing that’s clear is that ex-pat Lockwood is a clear winner.

And he’s the only clear winner.

The vagaries of the preferential voting system means that although the red, white and blue version was number one choice for the majority, the complex counting that’s the preferential system means winners on the day aren’t always winners by the time the votes have been counted, discarded and recounted.

Call it quirky or call it flawed, it’s an odd voting system that allows something that came in in second place to win the day.

If the vote had been most points wins, we’d have been looking at a potential new flag that’s prime colour was a positive red rather than a negative black.

This flag referendum has been mired in controversy, dispute and, in many cases, apathy since day one. It’s had its strong supporters, those who believed New Zealand’s flag should represent who we are as a 21st century country, that we should live in the present and that we should look forward.

It has had as many in opposition who believed the past is part of who we are today and that we should take that past forward into the future.

Many of those who objected to the referendum have made their feelings clear with about 9.7 per cent of the 1.5 million votes count discarded as invalid or informal. And that, in itself, tells another story.

Whether black or red is the winner on Tuesday when the final votes are counted, we’ll now have an opportunity to spend even more money to find out whether we’ll be standing up to sing the national anthem while a new flag or the old, flutters in the breeze when we pit old against new next year.

he approaching end of any year always offers an opportunity to look back and take stock of the previous 12 months. This stocktake produces both a list of achievements and provides a reason for that end-ofyear tiredness and anticipation of a summer break.

This past year has been no different from most for me in that it has been very busy. A look through my diary produces an overview of my year both in the electorate but also in Parliament and as a Minister.

Electorate work has been as always a very satisfying part of my job as MP. I have attended numerous events throughout the electorate, many of which stood out as being special this year.

These include celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Red Cross, the opening of the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre, the opening of the EA Networks Centre, attending the Trustpower Community Awards in both Timaru and Ashburton, White Ribbon events, two Fire Service Gold Star presentations, Children’s Day and celebrating the completion of the UFB rollout in both Timaru and Ashburton.

This year also saw a focus on the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings on Anzac Day. Constituent work in the electorate has been busy too with my staff telling me that between the Timaru and Ashburton offices we opened about 300 case files.

Some of these are resolved quickly while others are complex, challenging and time-consuming. It is always a good feeling to have been able to help someone with an issue they are facing.

My determination to get out and about in the electorate, meet people and hear of the issues that affect them has resulted in 36 appointments with community leaders, 17 visits to schools and my hosting 11 seniors’ meetings.

I also attended five A&P shows, including Canterbury, and hosted six visiting MPs in the electorate and seven Ministers,

One of the real pleasures of my job is congratulating those who celebrate 100th birthdays or significant wedding anniversaries. This year I have written to or visited eight people who have celebrated 100 years, or more, birthdays including a 107-yearold and 105-year-old. I have also written to 33 couples celebrating 60th wedding anniversaries and four celebrating 65th anniversaries.

Parliament rose for 2015 last Wednesday. It has been a busy year with the House sitting for 88

days compared to 70 in 2014. 120 bills passed their third reading and became law this year. There were 87 question times with Ministers, including myself, answering 1044 oral questions and thousands more supplementary questions. Ministers were also asked more than 16,000 written questions.

Legislation passed included the KiwiSaver HomeStart Bill, reflecting the Government’s commitment to help over 90,000 Kiwi families into their first home through the new $435m HomeStart grants scheme.

A continuing priority for the Government is the settlement of all historical Treaty grievances, a process being superbly led by the Minister for Treaty Settlements Christopher Finlayson. Six settlement bills have passed into law this year.

In brief Dozens injured More than 50 police officers and several demonstrators have been injured in clashes in the eastern German city of Leipzig as farleft protesters rallied against a neo-Nazi rally. In all, 56 police and several demonstrators were hurt at the weekend, a police spokeswoman said. About 30 police vehicles were also damaged, she added. Security forces also made more than two dozen arrests, according to the spokeswoman. The clashes erupted on the sidelines of a protest, attended by about 1000 people, held against a neo-Nazi rally, which was attended by about 150 people.

Climate deal ‘incredible’ Environmentalist Tim Flannery says the United Nations agreement secured in Paris is a watershed moment in the global effort to tackle climate change.

“We have witnessed something incredible today. Finally, we can feel hopeful that we are on a path to tackling climate change,” Professor Flannery, who is a member of the Climate Council, said in a statement on Sunday.

The historic deal agreed by 196 parties on Saturday legally binds the world to limit global warming to well below two degrees,

with an aspirational goal of 1.5 degrees.

Prof Flannery believes the universal agreement marks the end of the fossil fuel era and provides a catalyst for what could be the greatest period of technological innovation in the history of mankind.

“The era of renewable energy is upon us,” he said.

Australian Conservation Foundation head Kelly O’Shanassy says while the deal doesn’t go far enough, it does set the world on a good pathway.

“A few years ago when the two degree target was set, people felt that was unachievable but now we know how to do it,” she told ABC television from Paris.

But she is concerned that the short-term emissions reduction goal is too weak, particularly Australia’s.

“If everyone in the world had goals as weak as Australia we’d be tracking toward a three or four degree world,” she said.

ActionAid chief executive Adriano Campolina believes the Paris deal must be seen as only the

beginning because it falls short of putting the world’s poorest people first who are living with the constant threat of the next disaster.

“What we have been presented with doesn’t go far enough to improve the fragile existence of millions around the world,” he said in a statement.

But he said despite the disappointment, the Paris agreement provides an important hook on which people can hang their demands.

At least 87 killed in Burundi violence Burundi’s army says that 79 “enemies” and eight soldiers were killed during the bloodiest day in months of unrest at the weekend, which left the streets of the capital strewn with bodies, many bearing gunshot wounds.

The violence began with coordinated attacks by unidentified gunmen on three military installations, which triggered a fierce riposte from the security forces.

Several witnesses described the police and army going door-todoor in opposition strongholds in the capital Bujumbura, dragging out young men and executing them.

Army spokesman Colonel Gaspard Baratuza yesterday said all those killed were either “enemies” of the state, soldiers or policemen.

“The final toll of the attacks is

79 enemies killed, 45 captured and 97 weapons seized, and on our side eight soldiers and policemen were killed and 21 wounded,” Baratuza said.

The army had given a much lower toll after the assault on two military bases and a military training college, saying that 12 rebel gunmen had been killed and 21 captured in the attacks.

But yesterday horrified residents of different neighbourhoods awoke to find at least 39 corpses scattered in the streets.

“Fighting continued into the night and the corpses found in these neighbourhoods are enemies,” Baratuza declared.

Several witnesses accused the security forces of extrajudicial killings, describing officers breaking down doors in search of young men and shooting them at

close range. Some of the victims had their arms tied behind their backs, they said.

The army spokesman declined to comment on the details of the fighting and deaths.

One witness in Nyakabiga, a hotspot of anti-government protest in recent months, described the victims as “kids” and said they had been shot execution-style “through the top of the skull”.

A resident of Musaga, close to the military college that was among the sites attacked, said there were more than a dozen corpses in the streets.

“I have counted 14 dead bodies with my own eyes,” he said, blaming “soldiers and police” for the killings.

The government collected bodies from the streets of Bujumbura yesterday, with sources saying

they were swiftly buried in mass graves in the afternoon “to prevent the spread of disease.”

But some residents said they suspected the authorities of trying to hide evidence of a massacre perpetrated by the security forces, a view echoed by a European diplomat.

“There are dozens of bodies but the authorities are trying to make them disappear,” said the diplomat, who spoke of “dozens of bodies in other protest districts, such as Mutakura and Cibitoke” on top of those in Nyakabiga.

The fighting was the worst outbreak of violence since a failed coup in May, sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office, which he later won in disputed elections in July.

The death toll from a devastating US air strike on an Afghan hospital in the city of Kunduz in October has risen to 42, medical charity MSF said yesterday, citing an internal investigation. “Previously MSF had reported a death toll of at least 30 people, but the organisation confirms the toll has risen to 42, after methodical review of MSF records and family claims, as well as patient, staff and family testimonies,” MSF said. “The revised figures include 14 MSF staff members confirmed to have been killed, as well as 24 patients and four caretakers.” The October 3 air raid on the charity’s hospital during a Taliban offensive on the northern city forced the facility to close and sparked an avalanche of global condemnation.

Hospital fire kills 21 A fire at a psychiatric hospital in southern Russia has killed 21 people. “Nineteen bodies were found at the site of the fire, two other people succumbed to their wounds at the hospital,” the country’s emergencies ministry said yesterday. The hospital building, made of wood, was destroyed by the fire, a spokesman said. A further 20 people were injured. The fire broke out at the hospital in the village of Alferovka, in the region of Voronezh in the south of the country. It was not immediately clear what triggered the blaze.

Affair denied South African President Jacob Zuma has denied rumours of an affair with the chairwoman of the state-owned airline amid speculation the relationship had led to the sacking of the finance minister. Zuma dismissed Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene on Wednesday. The minister had earlier rebuked Dudu Myeni, chairwoman of state-owned South African Airways and a close ally of Zuma, for mismanaging a 1 billion rand ($NZ92.4 million) deal with Airbus. Myeni is also executive chairwoman of Zuma’s charitable trust, the Jacob Zuma Foundation.

“Her relationship with the president is purely professional, and is based on the running of the foundation,” the president’s office said in statement yesterday.

“Rumours about a romance and a child are baseless and are designed to cast aspersions on the president.”

Syrians arrested in Geneva

Gambia now an ‘Islamic state’

Swiss authorities say two Syrians have been arrested in Geneva after traces of explosives were found in their car, as police continue to hunt for several suspected jihadists with links to the Islamic State group.

Geneva prosecutor Olivier Jornot told a news conference that the two men had Syrian passports and only “recently arrived” in Switzerland. They spoke Arabic, he added.

They were arrested after police were alerted about “their behaviour”.

He sidestepped questions on whether the pair were on visas allowing them to circulate freely through the visa-free Schengen zone.

But Jornot said they were not among the four men being searched as suspected jihadists planning attacks following the Paris carnage on November 13 and whose photographs have been released by the police.

Jornot said the two arrested men said they had recently bought the car they were travelling in, and he clarified that it only bore traces of explosives and not toxic gases.

He said they were arrested on the day they arrived in Switzerland.

The federal prosecutor’s office had said in an earlier statement that the two men were arrested on suspicion of the “manufacture, concealment and transport of explosives and toxic gases” and of violating Swiss law prohibiting

“groups like al Qaeda, Islamic State and similar organisations”.

Jornot later clarified that “the vehicle was at one point used to transport explosives” but that it did not necessarily mean it was the two suspects who did so.

The arrests come with the city on edge after Swiss authorities lasy week opened a probe relating to a “terrorist threat in the Geneva region”, prompting the region to raise its alert level to three on a five-point scale.

Armed police were deployed at sensitive locations across Geneva, which borders France and is home to the United Nations’ European headquarters.

The Le Temps daily on Friday cited an unnamed source close to the case as saying the Swiss had received a tip-off from US intelligence about a jihadist cell in Geneva.

Pictures of four individuals suspected of links to the Islamic State group, which claimed last month’s Paris attacks, were published by media across the country.

Authorities in Geneva had said that the search for possible extremists was being conducted “in the context of the investigation following the Paris attacks”.

But multiple sources, who requested anonymity, said there did not appear to be a direct link with the November 13 gun and suicide bombing attacks that left 130 dead in Paris.

Woman Floral tribute to Sydney siege victims names son Uber A woman in the Indian capital has named her baby Uber after she gave birth in a taxi operated by the app-based company, a news report says.

The woman phoned Uber for the cab after repeated calls to a hospital for an ambulance went unanswered, the Times of India newspaper said.

The woman accompanied by two female friends wanted to be taken to a state-run hospital near her home in Delhi, the newspaper quoted the driver of the taxi, Shahnawaz, as saying.

“I had asked them to call an ambulance, but the women said that they couldn’t get one,” the taxi driver said. During the journey he had to stop because the woman was in great pain.

As soon as the delivery was done, Shahnawaz rushed the woman and her newborn baby son to the Safdarjung Hospital.

He said the doctors first asked him if he was the husband and after he told them what had happened, they congratulated him.

A “scattered starburst” of some 400 floral cubes will be inlaid in the granite pavings of Sydney’s Martin Place to honour those who died in the Lindt Cafe siege.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said the siege last December had forever changed Sydney, whose residents mourned the deaths of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson in the face of evil.

Mr Baird said the kindness of thousands of people who left flowers and cards in the days after the siege was “something quite incredible”.

“We saw this outpouring of compassion and mourning that came with those families and victims,” Mr Baird said yesterday.

“It also said to those that want to bring hate, we’re going to respond with love, we’re going to respond with peace.”

“And those that come and try and divide this city, this state, this country, well you won’t, we’re going to unite,” he said.

Johnson said. He said he hoped the “quiet and reflective” tribute would encourage Sydneysiders to pause and take stock.

Mr Baird invited the people of Sydney to attend a twilight ceremony tomorrow marking the one-year anniversary of the siege.

President Yahya Jammeh has declared the Gambia “an Islamic state”, but stressed that the rights of the Christian minority in the small west African country would be respected and that women would not be held to a dress code.

The announcement came as the president addressed supporters in the coastal town of Brufut, and the comments were later broadcast on state television and repeated on his website.

“Gambia’s destiny is in the hands of the Almighty Allah. As from today, Gambia is an Islamic state. We will be an Islamic state that will respect the rights of the citizens,” he was quoted as saying on the presidential website.

In television footage of the address on GRTV, the president did not go into detail about what the change would mean for the country, but he reassured Christians and followers of other faiths they would be able to worship freely.

“Christians will be given their due respect. The way of celebrating Christmas will continue,” he said, adding that no one had the right to interfere with others’ “way of life”.

He also warned against trying to impose a dress code on women.

“I have not appointed anyone as an Islamic policeman. The way women dress is not your business,” he said.

An impoverished former British colony nestled within Senegal, and famed for its white-sand beaches, Gambia has a population of nearly two million, 90 per cent of whom are Muslim.

Jammeh, 50, a military officer and former wrestler from a rural background, has ruled the country with an iron fist since he seized power in a coup in 1994.

Colombia, Spain row over sunken treasure Billions of dollars in gold and silver from an 18th century shipwreck have left Spain and former colony Colombia at odds over who rightfully owns the loot.

The disagreement is over the San Jose, a treasure ship wreck that Colombia located recently off the coast of Cartagena de Indias, its old Caribbean port city.

The San Jose sank in June 1708 near the Islas del Rosario, during combat with British ships attempting to take its cargo, as part of the War of Spanish Succession.

The Spanish galleon was the main ship in a treasure fleet carrying gold and silver - likely ex-

tracted from Spanish colonial mines in Peru and Bolivia - and other valuables to King Philip V. President Juan Manuel Santos announced in early December that experts had found the San Jose on November 27 in a place never searched before.

So who owns the estimated $US2 billion ($NZ2.9 billion) in loot?

“There are discrepancies on the issue of legal ownership,” said Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.

He met at the weekend with his Colombian counterpart Mara Angel Holguin in Cartagena.

Spain in part has based its arguments on UN Law of the Sea rules. But Colombia is not a signatory to the treaty, and as such not subject to those regulations.

The Spanish diplomat said he was hoping a “road map for an understanding” could be hammered out given the countries’ excellent relations.

“This is not going to become an issue that divides us,” Holguin stressed, while acknowledging legal disagreements remained.

Only a handful of the ship’s crew of 600 survived when the San Jose sank.

Treasure hunters had searched

for the ship, described by some as the holy grail of wrecks, for decades.

A team of Colombian and foreign researchers, including a veteran of the group that discovered the wreck of the Titanic in 1985, studied winds and currents of the Caribbean 307 years ago and delved into colonial archives in Spain and Colombia searching for clues.

The loot is estimated to be worth at least $2 billion, its value having dropped significantly due to the falling price of silver, according to US-based company Sea Search Armada.

May the force be with you

B

leak and inhospitable, Hoth, the frozen planet featured in The Empire Strikes Back, wouldn’t be an obvious holiday choice.

But fans of cult film franchise Star Wars can travel to a place with ice, glaciers and mountains that is a lot more picturesque.

Iceland has starred in several big screen blockbusters, the latest being the seventh Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, and is the perfect option for anyone seeking a sci-fi winter break.

I start my other-worldly weekend adventure in capital city Reykjavik, but it’s the rugged landscapes outside the city limits that I’m eager to explore.

Iceland is a place that’s been shaped by ferocious geological processes and the sharp teeth of Arctic weather for tens of thousands of years. Striking features include glaciers, volcanoes and hot springs.

My first stop is Soheimajokull glacier, a 90-minute drive south and east from the city, along the island’s excellent long-distance

It is not far from Svinafellsjokull glacier, which doubled for the Himalayas in Batman Begins and the land North of the Wall in Game of Thrones.

It is also a sight of a changing environment.

Our guide from Reykjavik Excursions (www.re.is) tells us that 20 years ago, you could step from the car park onto the ice. Now, it’s a long uphill walk to the edge of the glacier.

If you’re picturing glistening, pristine, blue-tinted ice, you might be disappointed. The 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano – the one that disrupted so much air travel – coated the glacier in fine volcanic ash, so now it looks a bit more like a coal mine.

We strap on our crampons, hoist our ice axes and spend several glorious hours exploring the

ice, keeping a safe distance from any dangerous crevasses.

As well as glaciers, Iceland has some pretty epic waterfalls. Our route back from Solheimajokull takes us past Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

The latter has a walkway winding behind the thundering torrent – just be prepared to get a bit wet!

No less damp are Iceland’s lava tunnels, which have also become a tourist attraction. These narrow burrows are formed when lava flowing from volcanic eruptions cools and solidifies, and the hot magma runs away.

I don a hard hat and head torch, and follow our dry-humoured guide, Kommi, from Iceland Expeditions (www.icelandexpeditions.is), into the darkness.

At times, we have to crawl on all fours and occasionally even wriggle along on our stomachs.

If this all sounds like a bit too much effort, there are ways to have a good time if you are a bit more C-3PO than Chewbacca.

Reykjavik is a small but superb city, with a long sweeping waterfront and a striking 1930s concrete cathedral, Hallgrimskirkja, where the views from the top of its tower are worth the hike.

Other city attractions include a museum on whales (www. whalesoficeland.is), a chance to see the Northern Lights (www. aurorareykjavik.is) and, bizarrely, the Penis Museum (www.phallus. is).

I stay at the 4-star Fosshotel Reykjavik, which opened this year and is the largest hotel in Iceland.

I spend a good few hours in the property’s excellent beer bar called the Bjor Gardurinn. It has a varied and long drink list, with many Icelandic beers to try

– although the cheapest will set you back $5 and others can cost $12 each.

Of course, a long weekend break in Iceland involves much more than just drinking. Pampering is also important in this Nordic country. This is where the famous Blue Lagoon (www.bluelagoon.com) comes in handy.

Located on the road between Reykjavik and Keflavik Airport, its milky blue, geothermal, silicarich waters (heated between 36 to 40°C) provide instant relaxation. It even has a swim-up bar – although there’s a three-drink maximum rule, to avoid drunkenness.

I go there after dark, in the hope of glimpsing the aurora.

Lying back in the warm water, I look up to see brilliant stars illuminating the clear sky.

It’s unlikely I’ll ever have a chance to enjoy space travel, but with the alien landscapes of Iceland on my doorstep, there’s really no need to jet off to a galaxy so far, far away.

In brief Netball wraps up The Mid Canterbury Netball twilight netball finals were played on Wednesday night. The Higher Raters won their final 26-20 while the Social Two final saw the Gold Thorns overcome MSS 25-20.

Meanwhile the Social One final was taken out by The Bandits who scored a narrow 25-23 win over Average Joes. The winning teams from each grade took home a Subway voucher.

McCullum equals record Brendon McCullum equalled Adam Gilchrist’s record of most sixes in Test cricket yesterday when he belted Rangana Herath over the fence in Dunedin. McCullum came to the crease during the first session on day four of the first Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka with the home side looking for quick runs. The right-hander wasted no time, dancing down the track to his first ball and whacking spinner Herath for a straight six. Soon after the skipper hit Herath over midwicket for his 100th six in his 98th Test.

Round six of the Pritchard Shield saw Allenton upset Coldstream and Tech down Methven, while Lauriston had a bye.

Hosts Allenton won the toss and elected to field first as Sean Strange played the role of chief destroyer, taking an exceptional five for 17 from his nine overs.

The visitors produced a patchy performance with the bat and were all out for 122 in the 29th over.

Coldstream’s top-order of Aftab Naika (0), Bo Houston (8) and Brad Horrell (0) failed to deliver,

with Strange removing Naika and Horrell for nought.

The middle-order set about kick-starting the innings with Brent Ferguson (13) and Ash Shah (10) contributing before being dismissed by Strange for his third and fourth wickets of the afternoon.

Richard Print offered the most resistance, steadying the ship to top-score with 43 and Andrew Bennett recorded 16, but there was no wagging tail to boost the total.

Strange took his fifth and final wicket to round off a fine day’s work as Sulekn Mehta went back

to the pavilion for zero.

In reply, openers Josh Worsfold and Jeff Naish could only muster six and five respectively before Jordan Bird set about making quick inroads in to Coldstream’s total, posting 49 off 40 balls.

Strange and Meyrick both recorded 17 as the home side chased down the target in the 22nd over with three wickets intact.

In the round’s opposite fixture, Methven won the toss and sent Tech in to bat at the Methven Domain.

notched 35 and 33 respectively as Tech batted out their overs on 204 for eight, and Sam Medhurst took three for 39 off eight overs.

Methven’s reply fell 76 runs short, as the home side were all out for 128 in the 40th over.

Dave Maw (42) and Medhurst (38) were Methven’s best with the bat while Henry Cook (three for 28 off nine) and late call-up Kieran Hunt (two for 25 off nine) were Tech’s best with the ball.

Next weekend’s action, which will pit Coldstream against Methven and Lauriston against Allenton, will be the last before senior cricket resumes on January 9.

Just when he thought it could not get any worse, West Indies skipper Jason Holder has been fined 60 per cent of his match fee for slow over rates in their demoralising first Test loss to Australia in Hobart. The ICC ruled the Windies were three overs short of their minimum target in Australia’s mammoth 4(dec)-583 first innings. The rest of the Windies team have been fined 30 per cent of their match fees, while Holder faces suspension if he reoffends in the next 12 months after being sanctioned for the third time since taking over in September.

Black Sticks in final The Black Sticks Women will play for a gold medal at the FIH World League Final after defeating Germany 2-1 in yesterday’s semi-final.

New Zealand played an outstanding game against a strong German side, who were fresh off their quarter-final win over Australia.

Methven back in style

The opening fixtures in round two of interclub A-grade tennis produced wins for Methven, Hampstead and Fairton on Saturday.

Table-toppers Methven’s 100 per cent record extended to five wins after downing Tinwald 5-1.

The young pairing of Sam Bubb and Flynn Ness saw off Greg Feutz and Tessa McCann 7-5, 7-5 while Jarrod Hill and Hamish Hood made it a clean sweep in the doubles with a 6-2, 2-6, (10-3) win over Mathieu Lucas and Murray Amyes.

Methven’s fine form continued in the singles as Ness accounted for Feutz 6-4, 6-4 and Hill produced a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lucas.

McCann started well in her singles contest against Bubb, winning the first set 3-6, but then lost 6-1, (10-8) in a competitive encounter.

Tinwald picked up their solitary win of the day by default, after Hood retired with illness with the score at 6-3, 1-4 against Amyes.

Hampstead, who are second on the points table, kept the pressure on Methven at the top with a 5-1 drubbing of bottom of the ladder Southern.

Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan were clinical to topple Caroline Murdoch and Nicholas Thomassen 6-0, 6-0.

Southern’s Oliver McKeown and Charlie Stock were more resistant, but eventually lost out 6-4, 5-7, (911) to Christal Brosnahan and Erin Connelly-Whyte.

In the singles, Mitchell made light work of Murdoch in a 6-0, 6-1 mauling, before Connor Brosnahan matched his team mate, disposing of Thomassen 6-0, 6-1.

Christal Brosnahan was too good for in the singles McKeown to take a 6-3, 6-1 win but Stock posted a consolation victory for Southern, downing Connelly Whyte 6-4, 6-4.

In the day’s other fixture, Fairton took on Allenton in a middle-of-thetable battle, and came out with a hard-fought 4-2 win.

A-grade tennis will return to action on January 30 after the Christmas break when Hampstead face Allenton, Southern lock horns with Methven and Fairton play Tinwald.

Dan Carter has made a seamless debut for his French club Racing 92 in a 33-3 thrashing of English club Northampton in a European Cup game in Paris. Carter admitted he was nervous yet ran the game smoothly at five-eighth in his first appearance since a starring role in New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup triumph in October. The 33-year-old kicked three out of four conversion attempts before being replaced in the 63rd minute.

A number of familiar faces were in Racing’s starting line-up, including former All Blacks teammates Joe Rokocoko, Casey Laualala and Chris Masoe, along with former Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna. - NZME

Stormers name coach South African team the Stormers have named Robbie Fleck as head coach for the 2016 Super Rugby season. League boss steps down Departing CEO Phil Holden says he is leaving the New Zealand Rugby League in a stronger position from when he took on the job and insists the national organisation is heading in the right direction. Holden has confirmed his resignation from the job he took on in 2013 and believes the NZRL is well placed financially and structurally to further grow and develop the game at all levels.

Federer confirms superstar team-up Roger Federer has confirmed he will team up with fellow Grand Slam winning star Martina Hingis (right) for Switzerland in the mixed doubles at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. “Yes, I will play with Martina in the mixed,” 34-year-old Federer said in the weekend.

There had been widespread speculation that the two superstars would play together in Brazil.

Hingis, 35, had reportedly made the offer to play with Federer and was waiting for a response from the winner of 17 Grand Slam titles.

Great start for Carter

“I’m very excited about that because I haven’t played with Martina I guess in 15 years,” said Federer.

“I looked up to her when I was younger, I thought she was the most unbelievable talent.

“She’s almost my age and she was winning grand slams while I was still at the national tennis centre, trying to make it on the tour, and I couldn’t believe how good she was.”

Federer and Hingis last played mixed doubles together in the Hopman Cup in Australia in 2001, an event they won.

Federer is also set to play men’s doubles with Stan Wawrinka in Rio while Hingis will play women’s doubles with Belinda Bencic.

World number three Federer won Olympic gold in men’s doubles with Wawrinka in Beijing in 2008 and silver in singles behind Andy Murray in London four years later.

“I’ve always said the Olympics is very important to me,” said Federer.

“Every Olympic (Games) has been a super-amazing experience, an eye-opener, a great learning curve for me.”

Emphatic win ends drought

Canterbury are Women’s Toro Interprovincial champions for the first time since 1988, after downing Bay of Plenty convincingly in Saturday’s final at the Ashburton Golf Club.

The Canterbury team of Momoka Kobori, Amelia Garvey, Catherine Bell, Julianna Hung and Hillary O’Conner were in exceptional form throughout the tournament, but saved their best performance for the last day, winning all five matches to become worthy champions.

The closest Canterbury have

come to interprovincial glory since their win 27 years ago was a 2006 final loss to Bay of Plenty, but that defeat was avenged in style on Saturday.

Canterbury held their nerve to secure a place in the final with a nail-biting win over 2010 winners North Harbour on Saturday morning, where Amelia Garvey displayed nerves of steel.

With the scores level (2½-2½), it was up to Garvey and the then unbeaten Ela Grimwood to battle it out in the semi-final playoff after their match finished all square, but Garvey showed her class, finding the fairway, fol-

lowed by a safe approach and won with par.

Garvey credited her Canterbury team-mates for their fine performances against some strong competition throughout the week.

“I love this team.

“I think it’s the best ever, the way we trust each other to go out there and have fun and with two of our players undefeated it just showed how great they all played this week,” she said.

Canterbury manager Kate Johnstone said her team refused to look too far ahead throughout the tournament, taking a day-by-

day approach, which paid off in the final.

“Everyone kept telling us we had a good team, but we never tried to look at what the outcome was going to be and we have always said, ‘each day you start again’ and this is where we have ended up,” she said.

“It’s hard to believe, I don’t think I believe it yet, for Amelia to come from this morning where she looked like she had her game wrapped up, then to bounce back in the playoff was amazing so full credit to her.”

Barca in La Liga draw Leaders Barcelona threw a twogoal lead away as late strikes from Lucas Perez and Alex Bergantinos gave Deportivo La Coruna a 2-2 draw in La Liga yesterday. A Lionel Messi free kick and a bullet strike from Ivan Rakitic put Barca in control but they eased up in the closing stages and the visitors took advantage. It was the second successive draw in the league for Barca who have 35 points from 15 games.

Big win for Currie Braden Currie carved out his credibility in on-road racing yesterday, convincingly winning the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman 70.3 Taupo.

It was Currie’s debut attempt at half ironman racing since announcing his bid to gain New Zealand Olympic triathlon team selection last month.

The Red Bull endurance athlete turned around from a stunning off-road season, where he finished second in the World XTERRA championships, to beat a deep and powerful line-up of specialised 70.3 athletes in Taupo.

The Methven athlete, who is now based in Wanaka, stormed home in

03:51:48, exactly 50 seconds ahead of Callum Millward, who was the runner-up at Ironman Coeur d’Alene.

While Dylan McNeice, who was third at Ironman New Zealand rounded out the podium, was further behind on 03:57:48.

For Currie it was proof that he has the speed to leave these inform athletes behind and that his chosen path of qualification for triathlon at the Rio Olympics is well within his phenomenal abilities.

“I’m so stoked, I have proved that I can go fast on-road and it was just really cool to pull this one off,” said Currie.

“Sofia Rosa has worked up superbly since her last start win, with the experience of having had a start at Ellerslie standing her in good stead.

While Ruud Not Too hasn’t been there before she is a very sensible filly who should cope with it all.”

Bell excels on home turf

With Ashburton Golf Club hosting the Women’s Toro Interprovincials for the first time since 1969, it seemed fitting that an Ashburtonian, albeit in the red of Canterbury, was crowned player of the tournament.

Catherine Bell remained unbeaten throughout the week as Canterbury’s anchor in the middle order.

The 21-year-old produced consistent displays to help her side to Interprovincial glory for the first time since 1988, but Bell didn’t expect to be given the nod for the

player of the tournament award, considering the high-calibre of the other competitors.

“It felt amazing, just knowing how many good players are out there and the talent out there, so winning was great,” she said.

Despite losing out 3-2 to Northland in their playoff match on Saturday, Bell’s former team, Aorangi, also produced performances to be remembered, finishing in eighth place overall.

The former Ashburton College student said she was pleased for the Aorangi players, and proud of how the tournament was hosted

by Ashburton Golf Club.

“I’m thrilled for them, normally they’re further down, so for them to bounce up, I’m really pleased,” she said.

“The greenkeeper did a great job on the course, I saw him out here on funny hours of the day, he worked hard, it all went really well.”
