Queenstown’s economy is getting a timely boost as Gay Ski Week QT brings more than a 1000 high-spenders into the resort. Organiser Sally Whitewoods said up to 1400 visitors were loosening their wallets during a packed schedule of skiing, socialising and specially-themed events during the next few days. Mrs Whitewoods, who with civil union partner Mandy Whitewoods rescued the event from near-financial collapse three years ago, said more women and visitors from the US had turned up this year. The opening party sold out, with more than 300 people cramming into a downtown bar.

Farmer tipped off police

A man suspected of shooting dead two people, and leaving another critically injured, was apprehended after a farmer noticed him carrying a bike across a paddock at Wheatstone.

Police at a cordon near the scene said “it’s all over” as vans arrived to take Russell John Tully into custody at about 5.30pm, about seven hours after he allegedly entered the Ashburton Winz office.

Dogs barked as Tully was taken into custody about an hourand-a-half after a farmer checking sheep spotted the wanted man.

The farmer – Dan White was aware of the shootings and when he saw a man emerge from near the Ashburton River carrying a bike, he knew who he was seeing.

“I wasn’t looking for him, I had been looking for him earlier in the day, but I’d given up,” Mr White said Tully had seen him – he was around 100 metres away – so Dan slowly drove off and called police.

Armed police swarmed the property, while a helicopter circled overhead. Police manned cordons as armed officers with dogs moved about a hedge.

Tully was found behind the hedge and caught by police dogs. Screams were heard as he was taken in to custody, suffering from minor dog bites.

Police were last night still searching for a weapon and said a decision on charges would be made in due course, Canterbury Police Superintendent Gary Knowles said.

“We know this has been a very difficult day for the people of Ashburton and our thoughts remain with the families of the victims.”

hurt was in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital.

Earlier, Minister of Social Development Paula Bennett said the suspect was trespassed from the Ashburton Winz offices last week for intimidating behaviour.

He was also been trespassed from Presbyterian Support, which was locked down immediately after yesterday’s incident, the Guardian learned.

About 100 police personnel were involved in the search. The response involved uniformed police, the Armed Offenders Squad and the Special Tactics Group.

The New Zealand Defence Force provided logistical backup during the operation, which focused on the Ashburton riverbed and the area south east of Tinwald, to Lake Hood.

Mrs Bennett said it had been an “incredibly sad day” which had devastated families, friends and co-workers and rocked the country.

MSD chief executive Brendon Boyle said there would be an investigation into security at Winz offices. The unarmed security guard at the Ashburton site was not in a position to deal with violence on this level.

The Ashburton Winz office will be closed until further notice. Winz also closed offices in Timaru and Christchurch yesterday.

Tully has been in the news before. Last month, he told the Guardian he was homeless, living in his car and then pitching a tent in the Ashburton Domain.

During that time he visited several social agencies in an attempt to secure a Housing New Zealand property.

Ms Bennett confirmed Tully had not been in touch with her office, but understood his attempts to do so had been stymied by an incorrect email address.

Tully also contacted the Ashburton District Council during his search for a home. Ashbur-

ton mayor Angus McKay said he had met him and Tully had not displayed any anger.

Mr McKay said he went weak at the knees when he heard yesterday’s news. Ashburton was the kind of town where everyone was likely to know someone affected by the tragedy.

People at neighbouring businesses were initially unaware that just metres away, two people had died. Some nearby worked behind locked doors while surrounding streets were behind a police cordon.

Several people saw the suspect leave the building after the shooting and ride off on a bicycle. One man gave chase in a van.

A Winz client was sitting opposite one of the victims and said he felt the air whoosh past his head when the shotgun was fired.

After firing several shots, the man left the building, put his firearm in a backpack, unlocked his bike and rode off.

Shocked Winz client followed gunman A shocked man followed the man who shot three people as he fled the Ashburton Winz office.

The man, who asked to be called David, was in the midst of an interview when the gunman entered the building and shot the staff member sitting opposite him, less than a metre away.

The gunman then turned the gun on another person.

“It was incredibly loud, I could feel the air whoosh past my head,” he said.

In a state of shock he followed the man outside, and swore at him.

David considered tackling the man, as he watched him put the weapon in his backpack and unlock his bike, which was chained to the stop sign on the corner of Cass and Moore streets.

The offender was then seen to leave the scene leaving his helmet on the footpath, riding the bike east along Moore Street.

“She was a lovely person, really kind and helpful,” he said of the dead woman.

Another couple had just left the building when a man wearing camouflage clothing and a black balaclava, and carrying what they described as either a shotgun or a rifle passed them and entered the Winz office.

Seconds later they heard at least two shots ring out.

A woman, also believed to be a staff member, ran out and shouted at them to call the police, before running into the nearby medical centre.

A postie making a delivery at a business across the road heard the man screaming and swearing as he left the building.

Police and emergency services soon arrived and cordoned off the scene.

Two people were brought out of the building on stretchers, and taken away in separate ambulances.

Police later confirmed one person died at the scene, and another soon after in hospital.

A third person is in hospital, in a serious but stable condition.

Mate ‘stunned’

Donn McLaren was stunned when he heard his old school mate Russell John Tully was being hunted by police after a triple shooting in Ashburton yesterday morning.

The pair were mates at school, shared sporting interests and socialised together as teenagers and young adults. They caught up occasionally if Tully was home in Ashburton and Mr McLaren described him as a “good, normal lad”.

“He worked in Ashburton and did his diesel mechanic’s apprenticeship at Candy’s and then in his mid to late 20s headed off to the mines in Australia.”

Mr McLaren said he caught up with Tully about six years ago and it appeared his life was pretty much on track.

He recalls that Tully’s mother died when he was at college and his father shortly after. He believes he has a sister.

Back then he was known as Russell.

They reconnected as adults.

“He was a fun kind of guy. A big bloke. He was a great rugby player, a guy with a lot of future ahead of him.”

He contacted Tully a few weeks ago after reading an article in the Guardian telling the story of his search for somewhere to live.

The Tully he met up with was still the same man, he said, apart from an illness that had made it impossible for him to work.

Guardian reporter Toni Williams interviewed Tully when he was searching for a home.

“When I talked to him he was very calm, very reasoned. He was a large man, so you could see he could be intimidating, but he basically just wanted

to come home to die,” Mrs Williams said.

She found him open and honest as he talked about his homeless plight.

When she realised the man she had interviewed was being sought for the killings, Mrs Williams said she felt ill.

“I certainly never felt threatened by him, but now I just feel sick. Two people have lost their lives.”

The man arrested after yesterday’s triple shooting was a homeless man whose search for a home featured in the Guardian last month.

Russell John Tully, known as John, approached the Guardian to air his frustrations over the lack of accommodation in his home town for people in the situation he’d found himself in.

Tully said he’d moved back to Ashburton to die from an unidentified skin disease which caused boil-type lumps if untreated, which had tightened his joints and caused limited movement. He’d been working in the mines in Australia prior to that.

The 48-year-old was on a disability benefit and said his doctor had told him he should have a mobility scooter.

After a falling out with his flatmate, Mr Tully was living rough while on the waiting list for a Housing New Zealand property.

Presbyterian Support, through the emergency housing fund, helped by giving him a roof over his head for four nights and Tully said he’d been in touch with Housing New Zealand and Winz, Ashburton

mayor Angus McKay and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew’s office.

As a cry for help he pitched his tent openly at the Ashburton Domain, but after visits from security and 27 telephone calls to the police from members of the public, he was moved on.

He said he slept in his car, but then had to sell it to get some money.

Days later, with no solution found, Tully told the Guardian he would contact Winston Peters with his story.

On August 14, he emailed New Zealand First staff and the offices of the Speaker and ministers Gerry Brownlee and Paula Bennett among others.

New Zealand First, press secretary Judith Hughey said a reply was sent to Tully and several follow up emails were sent.

Those emails bounced back.

“We were also contacted by an Ashburton reporter who was in contact with Mr Tully and we informed the reporter that our responses were bouncing back.”

Tully told them about the difficulty of getting a house to live in and said that he was not receiving any help locally.

He said he had also approached the local member of Parliament, Jo Goodhew.

Lots of neighbours unaware of shooting

As people working in businesses near Ashburton’s Moore and Cass Streets were preparing to have their morning tea break, a gunman entered their neighbour, the Winz building and began killing people.

The man, believed to be Russell John Tully, was wearing camouflage gear and a balaclava. He cycled up to the building, padlocked his bike to a post, grabbed his sawn-off shot gun and walked in the building’s front door. In that moment life for Winz staff changed for ever; for two people it ended.

Electraserve general manager Blair Watson was alerted to the shooting when he heard someone shouting and swearing on the street. He looked outside and saw a man fumbling with the lock on his bike. The man, wearing dark or camouflage clothing and a balaclava then hopped on his bike and headed down Moore Street towards Chalmers Avenue.

“Unfortunately it’s one of the things you don’t know about until it’s too late. We had nail guns firing in the building so we wouldn’t have heard any-

thing. The Winz staff were all running out while he was still there.

Like other buildings in the area, Mr Watson said Electraserve was still open for business, but its Moore Street entrance was locked.

Staff at Drummond and Etheridge were also working behind closed doors for most of the day.

They too were unaware of the tragedy unfolding across the road until one of their staff members saw an online news snap.

They were only able to watch from behind the cordon as police and ambulance services converged on the Winz building.

Postie Marie Summerfield was on Moore Street when the shooting occurred, but like others did not hear the shots fired.

“I heard this noise and thought it was someone with the radio up loud and then I saw this man outside Winz ranting and raving and saying f…c… b……. and any other word you can think of.”

tried to chase after him, she said.

For Bruce Henderson, his brush with the Winz killings came when he was out for his morning run on the Ashburton River track.

As he and his running mate were heading east on the track, Mr Henderson said a man wearing camouflage clothing and a

balaclava sped past them.

The track is well used by mountain bikers, but the man looked odd, out of place, “And he was in a real hurry.”

The pair ran on and a little further down the track found police congregating near the river. They were pretty shaken, Mr Henderson said when they realised the man could have

been linked to an earlier shooting in Ashburton.

When the shooting took place just after 10am they’d already headed onto the track, and saw the cyclist at around 11am.

“When you’re down there running, you’re not really aware of anything. It certainly now makes you a bit cautious down there,” he said.

Nearby residents watched in shock as a police cordoned off the river end of Chalmers Avenue in the hunt for Russell John Tully, wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of two people at the Ashburton Winz office yesterday morning.

A third person was seriously injured.

Police soon executed an extensive search of the Ashburton riverbed.

A helicopter carrying armed personnel conducted an aerial search, landing to refuel in the Collegiate rugby field.

Carol Ward, who lives in a block of flats just two houses up from the cordon was horrified by the shooting. She knew one of the victims, who was a good friend of a neighbour in an adjoining unit.

Mrs Ward had heard of the shooting via a text message from her daughter Sarah Ward.

She was not aware of having seen the wanted man, who has been sleeping rough in the riverbed, in the area – but was unnerved at the events unfolding on the street.

“I came home earlier to get some bread to feed a friend’s chooks – I was scared he could be hiding in the bushes,” Mrs Ward said.

“I even looked around inside

the house.” The heavy police presence brought back memories of 15-year-old Kirsty Bentley, who was last seen walking her dog toward the river on New Year’s Eve 1998.

Kirsty’s dog and underwear were found in the riverbed, near the Chalmers Avenue access point the following day, and her body was discovered in the Rakaia Gorge on January 17.

“This all just takes me back to Kirsty,” Mrs Ward said.

Sarah Ward was one of the last people to see Kirsty alive.

“I passed her – she was walking toward the river and I was coming the other way,” she said.

Richard Blackburn has lived on that section of Chalmers Avenue for about six months.

“It was unravelling when I left this morning, but I didn’t know what was happening at that time,” Mr Blackburn said.

“Its frigging horrible – I’m absolutely shocked.”

“I heard he biked past here this morning, if I’d been able to I probably would have tried to take him down.”

Leo Sooialo was one of many locals who arrived at the scene.

“I was in the Winz office for an early morning appointment a week ago, it’s very scary,” he said.

Mr Sooialo was trying to make contact with a friend who works in the Winz office.

“She’s not answering her phone, and neither is her partner.”

■ LAKE HOOD

Residents trapped in their lakeside homes By sue NewMaN aNd susaN saNdys Lake Hood was a settlement divided until late yesterday, with some residents trapped in their lakeside homes and others standing outside a police cordon.

For much of the day police were scouring the area for Russell John Tully who was wanted in connection with the shooting of three people in the Ashburton Winz office at about 10am.

Two of those who were shot died.

The search for Tully, who fled the scene on a bicycle had cen-

tred on the Ashburton River bed, focussing in the afternoon to land around the Lake Hood settlement. And for residents who were away from home, that meant attempts to return to their properties were stymied from about lunch time on.

Mark Wilson found his way barred when he headed home for lunch and later that day when his wife went to collect their son from school she was not allowed to return.

Some were told to pack their bags and stay put, waiting for further advice from police; others were told to pack and leave.

had 10 minutes to pack up her child, pets and some belongings. She had been walking her two dogs at about 11.45am, when a black-clad armed offenders squad (AOS) member approached her and told her she needed to get home. A helicopter was also circling the area.

Her 12-year-old son was home sick, and the pair spent the day nervously looking outside as the village was in lock down and the helicopter continued to circle overhead. “It’s been a very weird day,” Ms O’Donnell said.

Late afternoon she was on her way to a friend’s place in Ashburton after being evacuated.

She knew of other residents in the village who were likely to return from work and find they were not able to get home.

She had no idea when she might be allowed to go back home.

“The police just said to watch the news and that’s how we know we will be allowed back.”

Karen Cudmore was one of the residents who were told to pack and stay. Earlier in the day she looked outside her front window and saw armed offender members moving up and down Torbay Avenue. She was told to lock her doors and to remain inside her house. Her mother

collected her children from school, but she also had to run the police cordon to reach her Stranges Road home.

Ms Cudmore was terrified but was determined not to stay in her home overnight with just a three-year-old for company.

Throughout the day she had been in contact with other residents who were trapped inside their homes and said Facebook had been a godsend in terms of keeping in touch with the outside world.

Tully was captured about 5.30pm and residents were finally anticipating spending the night in their own beds.

Schools put into lock-down

Many Ashburton schools activated emergency procedures and went into lockdown yesterday as police scoured the Ashburton area for a man wanted in relation to a triple shooting at the Ashburton Winz office.

Ashburton College called back onto campus students who were off the school grounds on community projects and several primary schools locked doors and pulled blinds during the man hunt.

Last minute adjustments were made to school bus runs yesterday to ensure students were able to dodge police cordons and reach home safely after school.

A teleconference was held between school principals and police mid-afternoon and it was decided that all schools would finish at their usual time and that all buses

except those going into the Ashburton River area would run as usual.

Buses using roads in the area bounded by Wakanui Road, Grahams Road, Trevors Road and the Pacific Ocean were re-routed to deliver children home.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said the college was identified as the go-to base for any children who were waiting to be collected by parents but by 4.15pm the waiting area had been cleared.

Buses ran on schedule from Mt Hutt College, he said.

As the drama around the man hunt unfolded, Mr McMillan said staff and students were kept well informed and were regularly updated on any changes to bus routes.

The schools had worked closely with Pearson’s Coachlines on run options, he said.

Many of Ashburton District’s schools were put into lock-down when the Winz gunman was on the loose.

Ministry to review security protocols at all of its sites The triple shooting in Ashburton’s Winz office yesterday could see the Ministry of Social Development taking a hard look at security protocols on all of its sites.

Ministry chief executive Brendan Boyle said offices in Timaru, Oamaru, Christchurch and Balclutha were closed in the wake of the attack and would be closed until further notice.

“We are all devastated by the deaths of two of our colleagues in the shocking attack at the Ashburton Work and In-

come office and our deepest sympathies are with their families, friends and workmates,” he said.

While two staff members were killed a third was in a critical condition in hospital and the ministry’s thoughts and prayers were also with them, Mr Boyle said.

“Their families and our colleagues will need time and space to deal with this tragedy.

“We will be there for them. We ask that media respect their need for privacy.”

By DaviD Fisher Former Cabinet minister Judith Collins faces being pulled into the high-level inquiry into intelligence information being sent to blogger Cameron Slater after new information from the hacker known as Rawshark.

The Herald now has information purporting to be social media conversations and emails between Ms Collins and the blogger Cameron Slater.

Among the information, which was said to be hacked from Slater’s computer, is an apparent discussion about the political demise of former Labour leader Phil Goff.

The conversation appears to show Slater and Collins discussing Mr Goff ’s departure from Parliament in the context of an expected Official Information Act response just days before the unusually swift of an intelligence briefing to the blogger from the SIS. The Official Information Act release, made just days after it was requested, showed SIS director Dr Warren Tucker had briefed Mr Goff on Israeli backpackers the SIS had initially suspected were spies _ information the Labour politician had claimed not to have been told. Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics book raised questions as to whether Slater was tipped off about what to ask for and when the information would be coming as part of a politically motivated attack.

The Herald is currently analysing the new information but has matched the dates of an apparent conversation between Ms Collins and Slater with the days leading up to the release of the SIS information.

In discussing Labour’s prospects for the 2011 election, Ms Collins is said to have sent a message to Slater on July 31 2011 at 8.27am saying: “Can’t imagine that they can find someone to take the fall for Phil. When Phil fails, will he then resign from Parliament so we can have a by-election so soon after the election? perhaps he should just go now and then we can save money on a by-election?”

Slater is shown responding: “Well hopefully I will get my reply to my OIA

on Monday. then we will see what happens.”

Collins: “Oh dear. All this open government thingy.” Slater: “twewwible.”

The conversation – if accurate – shows the blogger discussing the expected release of intelligence information with Ms Collins, a Cabinet minister, before the SIS had released it.

The blogger had made the request for the SIS information on July 26. On August 2, he is said to have sent a message to a friend saying: “OIA’d the briefing minutes and notes for Goff ’s SIS briefing... it has been expedited, in the public interest. It is devastating for Goff I am told.” The information arrived on August 4.

The Inspector General of Intelligence and Security, Cheryl Gwyn, has launched an inquiry with hearings being held just nine days before the election. Mr Goff, blogger Cameron Slater and staff from the Prime Minister’s office have all been summoned to give evidence – but the absence of John Key from the list of those testifying has sparked fresh outrage from opposition politicians.

Labour’s Phil Goff says Ms Collins must also be called to testify to the inquiry into the release. Asked about the exchange, he said: “It indicates the closeness of the relationship.

“I would expect the Inspector General to have her give testimony as to what she knew and why she knew it.

Ms Collins told the Herald she had “no record” of conversations supplied to the Herald.

She said she had “no record of any Facebook conversations” with Slater.

“Cameron has advised me that he has now gone through all his Facebook conversations and there are none with me.

I am now considering lodging a complaint to police regarding what I believe to be forgeries.”

When the Herald asked why she referred to Facebook when questions didn’t specify the source of the content, she said: “Because Twitter is limited to 140 characters and I don’t have any other social media that I use.”

An overnight bus trip has turned into a night from hell for 37 passengers on a Naked Bus trip from Wellington to Auckland yesterday morning.

They were forced to wait in the cold for two hours when their bus was overwhelmed with fumes between Turangi and Taupo at 12.40am yesterday.

Eventually a Tranzit bus took them back to a BP petrol station near Turangi, where they tried to sleep on the cold floor for another hour until another Tranzit bus came to resume the trip to Auckland.

Then the Tranzit bus blew a tyre at Tirau at about 7.30am and they had another hour in the cold while the tyre was repaired.

The bus is finally due in Auckland at 12.30pm “barring further incident” – more than six and a half hours after it was due at 5.50am.

Passenger Jonah Park, a postgraduate law student at Auckland University, said many passengers were workers who would be late to work.

“There are mechanics and nurses and a lot of other people,” he said.

“Quite a few passengers have been sending emails overnight but there has been no contact, no replies. Naked Bus

as a company isn’t taking care of the situation at all.

“Many of us here are saying we won’t travel Naked Bus again. Mechanical failures and things like that are one thing, but having no respect for passengers, that’s kind of appalling.”

Naked Bus owner Hamish Nuttall told the Herald the company was now contacting all passengers to apologise and offer them a full refund plus a free trip in the future.

“Last night, the overnight service from Wellington to Auckland had a mechanical failure which meant that the bus had to be replaced. As it was at night, it took some time to find a replacement vehicle which had to be sourced from Palmerston North,” he said.

“Unfortunately the replacement vehicle then suffered a flat tyre. This delayed the service further.

“Naked Bus takes reliability extremely seriously. We have a preventive maintenance programme in place, and we monitor all mechanical issues. It is extremely unfortunate that one service suffered two unconnected but serious issues.

“We would also like to thank the driver, who has been complimented on his handling of the situation by passengers.”

Motorists notice body on tracks A witness has described finding a woman’s lifeless body lying next to a Napier railway line after she was hit and killed while walking her pet dog yesterday.

The incident occurred about 3.45pm and police responded soon after nearby members of the public saw a body lying by the railway tracks 200m south of the Marine Parade and Georges Drive

intersection, Hawkes Bay Area Commander Inspector Tania Kura said.

Motorist Hayley Seddon, 24, was first on the scene after noticing a body.

“I ran towards the tracks, while on the phone to emergency services,” Miss Seddon said. “Another lady had arrived by that time and she checked her pulse, but she had already gone.”

Putin seeks ‘statehood’ talks Moscow and Kiev representatives will meet in Minsk after Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the stakes in the Ukraine conflict by calling for statehood to be discussed for the restive east of the former Soviet state.

Putin’s remarks came just hours after the European Union gave Moscow – which the bloc accuses of direct involvement in the Ukraine insurgency – a week to change course or face new sanctions.

“We need to immediately begin substantive talks ... on questions of the political organisation of society and statehood in southeastern Ukraine,” the Russian leader was quoted

by Russian news agencies as saying.

Moscow has previously only called for “federalisation” that would grant greater rights to the eastern regions of Ukraine, where predominantly Russianspeakers live.

But Putin had sparked speculation that he may be seeking to create a pro-Russian statelet when he began to employ the loaded tsarist-era term “Novorossiya”, or New Russia, to refer to several regions in southeast Ukraine.

His spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was not talking about “Novorossiya’s” independence from Ukraine, but rather “inclusive talks”.

Forces break militant siege

Protesters clash with Pakistan police, storm TV

Iraqi security forces and Shiite militiamen broke a six-week siege imposed by the Islamic State extremist group on the northern Shiite Turkmen town of Amirli, as a suicide bombing killed 14 people in Anbar western province, officials said.

Army spokesman Lt. Gen. Qassim alMoussawi said the operation started at dawn and the forces entered the town shortly after midday.

Speaking live on state TV, al-Moussawi said the forces suffered “some causalities,” but did not give a specific number.

He said fighting was “still ongoing to clear the surrounding villages”.

Breaking the siege was a “big achievement and an important victory” he said, for all involved: the Iraqi army, elite troops, Kurdish fighters and Shiite militias.

Turkmen lawmaker Fawzi Akram alTarzi said they entered the town from two directions and were distributing aid to residents.

About 15,000 Shiite Turkmens were stranded in the farming community, some 170 kilometres north of Baghdad. Instead of fleeing in the face of the Islamic State group’s rampage across northern Iraq in June, the Shiite Turk-

mens stayed and fortified their town with trenches and armed positions.

Residents succeeded in fending off the initial attack in June, but Amirli has been surrounded by the militants since midJuly.

Many residents said the Iraqi military’s efforts to fly in food, water and other aid had not been enough, as they endured the oppressive August heat with virtually no electricity or running water.

Nihad al-Bayati, who had taken up arms with fellow residents to defend the town, said some army units had already entered while the Shiite militiamen were stationed in the outskirts.

He said residents had fired into the air to celebrate the arrival of the troops.

“We thank God for this victory over terrorists,” al-Bayati said from the outskirts of Amirli.

“The people of Amirli are very happy to see that their ordeal is over and that the terrorists are being defeated by Iraqi forces. It is a great day in our life.”

State TV stopped regular programmes and started airing patriotic songs following the victory announcement, praising the country’s security forces.

Pakistani anti-government protesters stormed the state TV building yesterday, forcing the channel briefly off the air as they clashed with police and pushed further into a sprawling government complex in the capital, Islamabad, in an effort to reach the prime minister’s residence.

The violence is the latest in the turmoil roiling Pakistan, where anti-government cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri and cricketer-turnedpolitician Imran Khan have been leading twin protests since mid-August calling on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign.

Over the weekend, three people died and hundreds were injured in what amounted to running street battles between the police and the demonstrators.

Yesterday, protesters and police clashed in various areas of the city’s Red Zone, a sprawling complex of government buildings and grassy lawns in the centre of Islamabad.

The protesters, armed with clubs and many wearing gas masks, hurled rocks at the policemen. Five police officers, including a senior Islamabad police chief, and three protesters were taken to hospital, bleeding.

A spokesman for the National Transportation Board says all five people aboard a small plane that crashed near an airport north of Denver have died. NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said the Piper PA-46 airplane crashed near the Erie Municipal Airport.

Shortly after the crash, three people were declared dead at the scene and two were taken to hospitals. Erie Police Cmdr. Lee Mathis says the six-passenger plane crashed a few hundred metres northwest of the runway, but he did not know if it was landing or taking off.

Joan Rivers ‘serious’ Joan Rivers remained in serious condition in a New York City hospital, after going into cardiac arrest at a doctor’s office. Melissa Rivers said in a statement her mother was “receiving the best treatment and care possible.”

She also thanked Rivers’ fans and friends for their support. “My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world,” Melissa Rivers said. “Her condition remains serious ... We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery.”

Spanish hearing A Spanish judge will open proceedings on whether to extradite to Britain the parents of a 5-year-old boy with a brain tumour they took abroad against doctors’ advice. Ashya King’s parents were arrested yesterday in southeastern Spain after a European arrest warrant was issued by Interpol at the request of British police.

Their son is receiving medical treatment for a brain tumour. A spokesman at the National Court in Madrid said the extradition hearing was delayed because the couple’s lawyer had not arrived.

The spokesman said judge Ismael Moreno was expected to decide if the parents should go free or be held in jail while the court decides whether to extradite them.

was stunned to hear of the shootings in Ashburton. On behalf of farmers everywhere our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones.

I am probably not alone in saying that the tone of this election hasn’t been the best advertisement for democracy. I cannot recall when a minister quit cabinet during an election campaign but the actions of bloggers, hackers, emails and this political feeding frenzy, distract us from the real issues we face.

I’m pretty sure my grandfather who spent close on four years inside POW camps, would be spitting tacks if he were still around today and saw the impact a German playboy was having on our democracy.

We could face a very new political phenomenon of a party or parties giving two fingers to the traditional baubles of office in favour of what’s called the cross-benches. What that means in practice is that the Opposition can’t afford to attack you while the government has to go cap in hand on every policy. It makes for electoral gridlock. A tyranny of the minority.

I’d like to give this farce a wide birth but it impacts upon what we do.

One thing that comes up on a regular basis when I hear politicians talk, is this claim that we have all our eggs in one basket. Then they list what they would do if they were in charge of our economy and what all the things are that they think our economy should be doing.

When I hear statements like that, it does make me question how much actual real world experience do a number of our politicians have with creating jobs, products, and wealth.

Look at the top-20 list in any party, I mean, look at them. It’s a talent desert.

It tells me paying politicians more only attracts the stuff you find after you clean out

This current political feeding frenzy is unfortunately distracting us from the real issues we face.

The view that “the government” can direct where jobs and productivity can occur is slightly naïve. Scratch that.

It’s so naïve my pre-school daughter can mount a more persuasive argument.

One might almost think that perhaps they believe that there could be perhaps a central government committee that oversees all such activities. Call it a Politburo. Maybe we could get into five year planning too.

Well that has been tried and didn’t work so good.

The reality is that jobs, productivity and wealth are created by individuals who have an idea and the determination to make it happen. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy or without risk. That’s why not everyone is a Richard Branson. In the case of farming, its not so much individuals but families.

When I hear one lot of politicians getting stuck into the other lot about how they are pushing this or that in agriculture, they miss the point big time.

What drives those farming families to make changes on their farms, is by determining what is in the best interests of

their family, what are they capable of and what resources do they have available.

There’s more like what work they will have to put in and finally what return they’ll get.

The change to dairy in the last decade hasn’t been about some secret plot by the government, Fonterra, DairyNZ, or Federated Farmers.

It has simply been driven by the fact that returns have been solid in dairy, not so great in other land uses, so a number of farming families with land that could be milked have looked at the situation in the marketplace and decided to back themselves to make better returns.

On the other side of the political spectrum you have people describing the opposite, that government shouldn’t fund anything that could possibly be used for personal gain.

These purists who tend to overlook what’s benefitted them. Such people fail to grasp that without a bit of government intervention and oversight like in infrastructure then we will suffer. The reality is that there is a chapter in most introductory economic text books on market failure.

New Zealand’s core com-

petitive advantage and future lies in agribusiness. It is the one thing we’re truly good at and no government is driving us farmers to do it. We do it because we enjoy it and we get a good return for it.

Just because we have a competitive advantage in agriculture doesn’t mean we can’t succeed elsewhere. That the All Blacks are world champions won’t prevent the Black Caps from winning the Cricket World Cup. A point just been made by our rowers.

So this takes us back to the election and, well, what a circus it is.

It would be good to have a return to actually debating actual policy instead of hypocrites who admit to receiving stolen property, using said property to act all outraged and accuse others of doing what he has admitted to being complicit in.

I look forward to September 21 and after that date when a certain German hopefully gets on a one-way flight to the nearest US territory.

Float possible for media giant

By Jamie Gray Australia’s APN News & Media says it is considering an initial public offer and sharemarket float for its New Zealand assets, which include the New Zealand Herald, Newstalk ZB and the online bargain website, GrabOne. In a statement to the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, APN said it had hired corporate advisers Grant Samuel to assist in a possible sale process, with an initial public offer (IPO) and NZX listing of the New Zealand assets being one consideration.

A trade sale was considered a possible option, although less likely.

The Herald has been planning to introduce a paywall for its online content, which would

entail online readers paying a fee for access to Herald articles, although APN chief executive Michael Miller said an IPO would not necessarily be contingent on the paywall being put in place first.

“We are confident and are convinced that the public will pay for great content digitally, just as they pay for great content today in print,” Miller said.

“While we have not announced specific timing yet, we are committed to the introduction of digital subscriptions at the right time.”

Miller said enough was known about paywalls internationally that would allow its advisers to come up with a valuation, should the company go down the IPO route.

By Paul mcBeth The board of Lyttelton Port Co has backed a takeover bid by council subsidiary Christchurch City Holdings, and will resolve to pay a special dividend to existing shareholders.

Christchurch City Council’s investment and infrastructure unit, which already owns about 79.6 per cent of the port, has entered into a lock-up agreement with Port Otago for its 15.5 per cent holding, and will offer $3.95 a share to mop up the remaining stock.

Having crossed the 90 per cent threshold with the lock-up agreement, it can enforce Takeover Code provisions to compulsorily ac-

quire the remaining shares.

The port’s directors also resolved to pay a fully-imputed special dividend of 20 cents per share, provided certain conditions were met.

The dividend is payable on September 18 with a September 16 record date.

“The board urges shareholders to do nothing in respect of the offer until they receive the target company statement (including the board’s full recommendation) and the independent adviser’s report,” it said.

Last week Lyttelton Port reported a net profit of $343.2 million in the year ended June 30, swelled by a $328.2 million insurance payment. - APNZ

Miller pointed out that Australia and New Zealand were at different stages of their economic cycles, with New Zealand being the more buoyant of the two.

“There is no doubt that the New Zealand economy is performing and should continue to perform strongly,” he said. “Australia is a bit behind in terms of a recovery.”

In brief Gentrack shares up Gentrack Group, the airport and utility software developer, has resolved the delayed contract upgrade with a customer which, in part, caused it to cut its prospectus full-year profit forecast barely six weeks after the company listed on the NZX. The shares gained. The contract upgrade, with an unnamed “Australian-based energy utility company” will be signed at the end of this month, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. A month ago, Gentrack flagged fullyear profit could fall as much as 32 percent below its May prospectus because of a delay in a contract upgrade and a pay dispute with another customer.

Miniatures criticised Foodstuffs’ Little Shop miniature toy grocery items promotion has been criticised by Geoff Simmons on Gareth Morgan’s web site Gareth’s World in a piece headlined “New World wants to turn your kids into fat zombie customers”.

Simmons said the promotion “was so successful for New World the first time around, they’ve brought it back. And why wouldn’t they?

Food manufacturers are falling over each other to get their foods immortalised in the form of a plastic miniature. It gets people in the door, and probably makes money for New World to boot.

The problem is that, like most advertising, only the companies that can afford it will take part.

Those are the companies with bigger margins, which usually means they are selling highly processed food, packed full of sugar, fat and salt. That is the only way to make food sit on the shelf for so long without going off, which makes the food cheaper to sell, which leaves room for an advertising budget.”

Westland revises payout prediction New Zealand’s second largest dairy cooperative Westland Milk Products has revised its payout prediction for the 201415 season to $5.40-$5.80 per kilogram of milk solids (kgMS) before retentions.

This is down on the $6-$6.40 forecast announced in July.

Westland chief executive Rod Quin said the revised payout prediction is a response to the conditions that all New Zealand dairy companies are experiencing at the moment.

“While the season is only just under way, we have always maintained a monthly revision process to provide shareholders with the most up to date forecast possible,” Mr Quin said.

“The reduction is driven by the falls in prices across the globe and the continued high value of the New Zealand dollar.”

While last week’s dairy auction saw an overall price drop of just 0.6 per cent, Mr Quin noted that the skim milk powder price – which represents a substantial proportion of Westland’s production – dropped 12 per cent.

He said there was still lacklustre demand from China and stock levels in dis-

tributor and customer warehouses was reportedly high. “Higher prices last season caused a growth in milk supply growth in Europe, the USA and New Zealand, giving customers more options.”

Mr Quin said the reduced payout will cause farmers to review their budgets. He said Westland’s board and management were very conscious of the stress this will put on some suppliers.

“We’ll be monitoring the situation and working closely with shareholders to help ensure they have the resources and tools to manage their way through this,” he said. “Westland will also continue its strategy to grow its capacity to produce higher value nutritional products such as infant formula.

“Our traditional reliance on bulk dairy commodities such as skim milk makes us more vulnerable to the cyclical swings of the international dairy market.

“Our recently announced investment in a $102 million nutritionals dryer at Hokitika will give us the capacity to shift more of our production to this end of the market where profits are higher and opportunities to lift pay-outs are better.”

A 72 per cent full compliance result and no prosecutions for the 2013/14 season shows Canterbury dairy farmers are taking their responsibilities seriously, according to Federated Farmers.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy section chair Jessie Chan-Dorman said the hard work was paying off and the owners and workers on the 1093 dairy farms in Canterbury should be congratulated.

“Farmers have really stepped up and are making adjustments to meet conditions in their effluent consents.

“Whilst we are not at 100 per cent full compliance yet, we are seeing a positive trend with a reduction in the level of noncompliance.”

It had not been easy and it had taken a lot of invest-

ment by farmers, and support through industry initiatives such as the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord, and the Canterbury Dairy Effluent Group, which had pooled resources to help drive change in the industry.

“The proof is in the pudding, where farmers have been much more proactive and meticulous in understanding and adhering to the conditions in their effluent consents.

“Effluent compliance is not a one-day-a-week job; it is seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year, so full compliance for 2013/14 being 32 per cent higher than in 2008 is a huge feat. We are pleased to see the positive trend.”

It was now a case of taking the next step with effluent where it was not just about compliance. There were economic benefits on-farm if farmers could use effluent wisely as a nutrient source, Mrs Chan-Dorman said.

“Now that we have better outcomes with our use of effluent, the next challenge for Canterbury dairy farmers will be nutrient management, especially in the face of the Land and Water Regional Plan and the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

The Rural Women organisation of Ashburton has appointed a new president to replace Bev Bagrie.

Mrs Bagrie decided to step down after three years in the role and at the recent annual meeting she passed on responsibility to Sandra Curd.

Mrs Bagrie said a stand-out achievement in her time as president was working with the Federated Farmers where she contributed to its meetings, and in return it provided support for the women.

She said she was particularly proud of the work the organisation had done for the community, including meals on wheels and baking for the elderly.

“It’s been very worthwhile and rewarding,” Mrs Bagrie said.

She said Mrs Curd filled the administration positions well, and she was happy to pass the responsibility onto her.

“Coming on as leader is a challenge, but with the support of the members we can carry on the good work,” Mrs Curd said.

Rural Women is a charitable organisation that offers support to communities in the area.

Right – Bev Bagrie has passed on the presidential reins on to Sandra Curd.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS Fairton

Our August meeting was held in the Rosebank meeting room and what a lovely warm and comfortable room it was.

It was our annual meeting with Chertsey/Pendarves WI. Our president Veronica welcomed all members and one visitor, then the aspirations were recited.

The motto for the day was “the more we co-operate the better we operate”.

Our speaker was Mr Hayman from Paterson’s Funeral Services who gave a very informative talk about his own life journey and his work.

Mrs Hanrahan thanked him and presented him with a fruit tray gift.

Several members asked questions after he handed out an information booklet to anybody wishing for more information.

Each WI then held its own monthly meeting.

Minutes, correspondence and the bank balance were all read and confirmed.

The Mid Canterbury Federation half-yearly agenda was read and discussed, also September flower show and Christmas boxes.

Members were thanked for all the work put into the items for cup day and Quizco. Well done, Fairton!

A meeting and chat brought the meeting to a close.

Hinds

On the July 23 for our 84th birthday outing, 12 members went to Bedrock Bar and Stonegrill for lunch.

The lunch was lovely and enjoyed by all.

While waiting for our lunch we had a short meeting. A letter from Age Concern was received thanking us for food given from our June meeting, and members who took posy bowls to the hospital were thanked by the president, Rosa Bennett.

Recently our institute took part in WI Cup Day competitions.

As usual Hinds performed well. A special congratulations to Rona for her dainty little floral arrangement. Hinds also competed in the quizco after lunch which was a lot of fun and very colourful. Hinds, though not in the placings, won a chocolate fish.

Colleen was the birthday gal of the month and the roll call saw a good collection of soap, talcum powder and flannels for a rest home.

Thought for the day: “Live for today for tomorrow may never come.”

Netherby

Thirty members attended our August meeting and were welcomed by our president.

Pauline congratulated those members who received placings at the recent Cup Day and Quizco.

Preparations were made for our Home Industries Show with invitations sent out and judges arranged.

Netherby will provide five cars and runners for Meals on Wheels this month.

Daphne read our Golden Threads and this was followed by some amusing recollections of what members had observed in their lifetimes.

Five members celebrated birthdays and the raffle was won by Patsy. The Moylan Trophy was won by Joan Campbell and the North Church shared by Rosie O’Brien, Nancy Christey and Joan Campbell.

Our guest speaker was Sharon Breakwell from Wastebusters who gave us an insight of the work done by this organisation, from its humble beginnings until today.

Sharon talked us through the proposed changes to the rubbish collections and urged us all to participate in the submissions process.

This concluded an interesting and social afternoon.

Tinwald

Members assembled at the hall at 12pm for a finger food lunch.

President, Joy Keen welcomed members to our meeting. One apology was accepted.

Judy read the motto: “Alone we can do little, together we can do much.”

Roll call, a tin of fruit to be donated, received a good response.

Tinwald received an invitation from Netherby WI to attend their home show, several members will attend.

Two teams are entered in the bowls tournament to be held at the stadium. Joy read the schedule for the Mid Canterbury Federation half yearly meeting. Raffles were won by Joy and Judy.

Members then took part in playing indoor bowls, this was followed by afternoon tea, this finishing off a pleasant afternoon.

Serves 4

To check it is cooked squash a rice grain between your fingers and it should be totally soft.

Drain and cool – preferably overnight.

■ COOK THE EGGS: Lightly beat the eggs. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok. Pour in half the egg mixture, tip it to make a thin pancake. When cooked, it will take about 1-2 minutes, remove from pan, roll up and cut into 1cm wide strips. Repeat with the remaining egg.

■ GET FRYING: Sauté the onions for 3-4 minutes add the beef and

continue for another 2-3 minutes or until the beef lightly browned.

Remove from pan. Add another splash of oil to the pan and add the vegetables and stirfry over a high heat for 5-6 minutes or until the vegetables are softened.

Add the rice, soy sauce, egg and meat. Mix through.

■ SERVE: Beef is loaded in iron, lamb is pretty good too, and you need iron to carry oxygen to the brain and muscles, and keep you physically and mentally fit. If you don’t have enough iron you feel tired, can’t concentrate and find it harder to learn!

■ BYGONE ELECTIONS

When elections relied on billboards BY

Most people will have noticed the election signs dotted around the place.

Some people will be swayed by what they hear and read but many people will have already made up their mind who they will vote for.

A campaign is being introduced to encourage people to vote – re-

gardless of who their votes will go to.

When I first voted we had only two decisions to make – the party vote and whether you voted for prohibition or continuance.

As a family we would walk to the nearest polling booth, make our marks and await the results.

In the ‘old days’ television would give us regular updates,

now we can get live feeds on computer on how our party or candidates are doing.

Pre-television people relied on a public billboard to give them the final results for their area, as well as nationally.

This billboard, outside the Guardian building, dates from 1925.

It gives the party results as well

as voting on the drinking issue.

In 1925 there were 8108 registered voters in the Ashburton electoral area and just over 92 per cent voted.

The candidates were Sir William Nosworthy (Reform), ex Aucklander J N Harle (labour), local bookseller H M Jones (Liberal) and Robert Galbraith (Independent Nationalist).

Sir Nosworthy won over Mr Harle on that occasion.

Possibly of more interest than the political results, however, was the fact that 47.3 per cent of the national vote went towards prohibition, which although not the closest vote the country had, still showed that a very large proportion of the voting public supported a nationwide ban on alcohol.

Ryan Nelsen fired Toronto FC manager and former All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen has been fired by the club after an outburst directed at the club’s boss, according to reports. Nelsen, in his second season as Toronto manager, was one win away from matching the club’s best ever high of 10 victories in a season - with 10 games to go in the MLS season.

After finishing ninth out of 10 teams last season, the side are currently fourth and still a chance to make the playoffs with nine wins, nine defeats and six draws.

But following Sunday’s 3-0 loss to New England, Nelsen blasted the club’s general manager Tim Bezbatchenko, putting the New Zealander’s job on the line.

Bezbatchenko responded by firing Nelsen and his entire coaching staff.

16th, women’s take league wins

Mid Canterbury 16th has finished on top of Mainland Football’s 16th grade division three, despite last weekend’s 4-6 loss to Nomads 16B. Mid Canterbury went into the match with an unassailable four point lead from Nomads,

with the loss in the final match taking some gloss off finishing in the top spot.

The 16th grade taking out their league adds to a league win by the senior women’s side, who also won their cup competition sealed with a 4-0 away victory over Hornby on Sunday.

Mid Canterbury 18th had an even more disappointing end to the season when Halswell United defaulted in the final game of the season.

Mid Canterbury banked the points and finished fourth in 18th grade division two.

Mid Canterbury 15th had a 0-2 loss to Waimak 15A in 15th

grade division one to finish fourth.

As well as the success of the 16th grade and women’s teams, Mid Canterbury Eastern won the division four cup – after initially losing the final to Universities but the students had played an ineligible player.

On Saturday the Cavaliers crushed Capital 5-1 on their home turf in Christchurch, thanks to a hat-trick from Cam Hayde while George Connell and Willie Davidson also found the back of the goal while the Canterbury Cats powered to a 3-1 win over Capital thanks to a Sian Fremaux hat-trick. Backing up from wins on their home turf, the Canterbury Cavaliers and Cats travelled to Timaru where they both overwhelmed their Southern counterparts.

Rowers on track for Rio

By DaviD Leggat The fanfare should be loud and hearty as New Zealand’s elite rowers arrive back in the coming weeks.

They’ve deserved it.

Six gold medals, nine altogether, represents New Zealand’s finest world championship haul.

Eleven of the 13 crews in Amsterdam last week made A finals.

The exceptions were the men’s double of Robbie and Karl Manson, who finished eighth overall, and the lightweight men’s double, who were scheduled for the C final but

withdrew when Alastair Bond moved into the lightweight four to replace the luckless James Lassche and won himself a silver medal.

The two quads were the only A finalists to leave emptyhanded.

It was a remarkable week’s work and suggests, at the halfway point in the Olympic cycle, that Rowing New Zealand’s programme is ticking the right boxes.

Not since 2001 has a crew, Britain’s Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell, won both the coxless and coxed pair titles at the same worlds. Then again, whatever Eric Murray and

Hamish Bond have a crack at tends to work out fine.

Six years unbeaten, they are on track to retire as the finest of all rowing crews.

Others shone through to suggest the future is rosy, such as Julia Edward, the lightweight woman who won eight of her nine races, as a single or part of a double, this year.

Or Fiona Bourke and Zoe Stevenson, who buried the heartache of missing out in the women’s double at last year’s worlds with a sizzling finish to win their first gold.

At times like this, there’s a tendency to look at what’s not there.

In rowing’s case the hole is the men’s and women’s eights.

There is an ambition to have crews line up in all 14 Olympic classes in Rio in 2016.

That means coming up with quality eights for the qualifying process next year.

The men’s under-23 crew won their second consecutive world title in Italy late in July.

There are other rowers who have had a chance at times in the last four seasons and could come again.

The women’s four won their non-Olympic event in Amsterdam.

That suggests the bones of an eight are already there. - NZH

Ashburton’s Laura Mackenzie went as far as the quarter-finals at the New Zealand Junior Singles Indoor Bowls championships in Wellington at the weekend. In qualifying Mackenzie beat Blair Eggers (Nelson) 11-9, Charnce Callaghan (Hawkes Bay) 17-6 and Stephanie Bellis (West Coast) 11-10, and a loss to Nash Smith (Tauranga) 6-18. In the quarterfinals Mackenzie went down to Blair Clemett (Marlborough) 10-11 Clemett went on to lose his semifinal to Jakeb White who in turn lost to eventual champion, Otago’s Jonty Horwell.

Tournament Week: Basketball In Dunedin the junior boys were due to play Otago Boys’ High School in the quarter-finals last night after finishing pool play unbeaten. The Ashburton junior girls went through pool play unbeaten after three big wins, but were outclassed 26-104 by top qualifiers St Hildas in the semifinals, and will meet Otago Girls’ High School today. The senior tournaments begin tomorrow.

Football In Nelson at the Trident Tournament the Ashburton Boys’ 1st XI beat St Bede’s 2-0 but went down to Northcote 1-3. In the Gary Sowden tournament in Christchurch the Ashburton girls’ 1st XI lost to Rangiora 1-4 and 0-3 to Marlborough Girls’.

The Tall Blacks were unable

New Zealand made a sluggish start, shooting only 33 per cent (11/33) from the field, and trailed 34-27 at the major interval. Only four Tall Blacks scored points in the first half, including Abercrombie, who notched up 13 in the first quarter.

But once he checked out of

the game, the offence stalled, and New Zealand took almost four minutes to score a basket in the second period.

The Tall Blacks cut the deficit to just one point at three-quarter time, with Abercrombie and Penney combining to score 19, and New Zealand did level the scores early in the final period.

In brief Alker in top 50 finish Steven Alker has finished in a share of 41st at the Web.com Tour’s first playoff event, the Hotel Fitness Championship, in Indiana. The Hamilton professional has already secured his PGA Tour card for next season after he finished inside the top 25 on the Web.com Tour’s order of merit this year. The Web.com Tour finals series, which includes four tournaments, offers another 25 PGA Tour cards and priority order ranking points for those players who have earned their card. Alker closed the Hotel Fitness Championship with a three-under 69 yesterday as he finished the tournament at six-under, 14 strokes back from winner Bud Cauley (-20). Alker has said he will likely play three of the four finals tournaments.

Lee fades in Massachusetts Kiwi golfer Danny Lee will need to a strong finish in the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship if he wants to keep his PGA Tour season alive. Lee fired a two-over 73 in his third round at TPC Boston in Massachusetts yesterday as he drifted from a share of 17th to a tie for 40th at one-under for the week, 11 strokes back from leader Russell Henley (-12). Only the top 70 players on the FedEx Cup standings will progress to next week’s BMW Championship and Lee began this week’s tournament in 96th. If he was to hold his position during today’s final round, he would only jump to 90th in the standings, so he needs a low round if he wants to continue in the PGA Tour’s playoffs.

Day again in contention At least it’s familiar territory for Jason Day. For his third big tournament in a row, Day is right in the mix as he chases victory - and the $10 million Fed Ex Cup bonus - on the US PGA Tour. The 26-year-old Australian surrendered his share of the lead yesterday but he’s only two shots behind front-runner Russell Henley going into the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship today. Henley shot six-under 65 at TPB Boston to take a one-shot lead from fellow American Billy Horschel (67) at 12 under in the second FedEx Cup playoffs tournament. But the greatest stumbling block for Day (69) could be world No.1 and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy who had a 64 to be tied with the Australian and Chris Kirk at 10-under.

The 25-year-old McIlroy won this event in 2012 and is in peerless form, boasting three wins in his last four starts. - AAP
