Big plans for Allenton medical hub BY TONI WILLIAMS

TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A new two-storey Allenton Medical Centre complete with pharmacy, radiology services, physiotherapy and 40-space carpark is proposed for the southern end of Allens Road. The site chosen has been identified as big enough to handle current patient demand, but also future growth. A Resource Consent Application has been lodged with the Ashburton District Council. Neighbours in the immediate vicinity of the proposed site at 7–11 Allens Road – those “potentially affected by this proposal” - have been canvassed for comment. They have received detailed information on the proposal from lawyers acting for South Link Health Services.

“South Link are currently looking at redeveloping the site at 7-11 Allens Road for the purposes of a new Allenton Medical Centre,” the accompanying letter said. The centre is being developed in conjunction with the existing Allenton Medical Centre. Plans, obtained by the Guardian, included background information, as well as future intentions. Under future plans the Allenton Medical Centre, with its six current doctors will move to the new premises and at least one other sole practitioner will merge with the clinic. There will also be weekend emergency clinics, as was current practice. An upstairs area included a sleeping space to accommo-

date short-term locums, specialists and student doctors as required. The staff numbers for the medical centre included eight full-time doctors, 4.7 nurses, 9.8 support staff, a locum, a physiotherapist, a radiologist and a pharmacist. It proposed operating hours from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. The Allens Road address is currently the site for MediFab which operates a manufacturing, refurbishment, import and distribution business, specialising in medical equipment. The site had been used as such since before the Ashburton District Plan was notified in 1995. Prior to that, the area was zoned Industrial B under the Ashburton Borough District Scheme.

Fourteen-year-old Serenity Timothy, getting her hair shaved by Megan Roberts, drew members of the Ashburton community together with music, food and goodwill on Saturday in an effort to raise money for a three-year-old boy called Eddie who is battling cancer. Serenity lost her father to cancer, and more recently an aunty, and wanted to support the toddler going through his own cancer journey. She organised the hair shave event at the chessboard on East Street. Despite the rainy conditions she raised more than $1600 in the hair shave, through a donated cake raffle and sausage sizzle on site.
