THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Mountain bike recovered Almost one week on from the shooting tragedy which rocked Ashburton, police are continuing their high profile investigation in the town. At the weekend they located a black mountain bike with a number of personal items thought to belong to the suspect arrested in relation to Monday’s incident. Canterbury police search teams, including specialist firearms dog handlers and dogs from Christchurch and Wellington, had been joined by 65 volunteer SAR team members from Christchurch, Methven, Oxford, Rakaia, Ellesmere and Timaru to search through rough scrub and bush. They extensively searched the area stretching from the scene of the double fatality to the farm near where Russell John Tully was apprehended. This included searching about 13 kilometres of riverbank along the Ashburton River. Police are continuing to look for any other items which could include an additional firearm and ammunition that may have been in the alleged murderer’s possession. They will continue the search today with a smaller team of police staff, and request the public and media continue to keep
away from the area. Police are still seeking information regarding the owner of a distinctive blue, red and yellow Challenger Sport mountain bike which was located last week. “If this is your bike or you know who it belongs to please contact police,” police said in a media release yesterday. “Please contact police urgently if you believe you have any information that may help with locating any personal items or this bike by calling Ashburton police on 307-8411. “Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.” The Winz building scene of the triple shooting, which left Leigh Cleveland and Peg Noble dead and Lindy Curtis injured, remained cordoned off yesterday and police continued to work at the site. Ms Cleveland’s funeral was held on Saturday in Alexandra where she grew up. Hundreds of mourners gathered to farewell the 55-year-old, and included her Ashburton work colleagues and Minister for Social Development and Employment Paula Bennett. Ms Noble’s funeral will be held today at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.
