THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Binge leads to brutal bashing An Ashburton teenager had been on a three-day drinking binge, before he launched an unprovoked attack on a man, leaving him with brain damage. Vincent James Kuru-Nathan appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, where he vacated his previous not guilty plea, and admitted a charge of assaulting Jeff Hill, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Kuru-Nathan had earlier admitted two counts of common assault in relation to the attack in the early hours of March 23. The court was told Mr Hill and mate Shaun Bovey had been at a friend’s house earlier in the evening, before heading into the Ashburton CBD with a group of people. Over the course of the night most of their friends drifted off, leaving Mr Hill, Mr Bovey and a third man to find their way home. The trio were on East Street when they met then 18-year-old Kuru-Nathan and at least five associates, who had crossed the road to accost them shortly before 2.40am.
Mr Hill was heard to say: “Come on guys, we are just having a good time – leave us alone”, before Kuru-Nathan ambushed him from the left and punched him in the face. Mr Bovey attempted to block a second punch using his arm; KuruNathan retailitated by punching him, causing him to stagger and fall to the ground. The defendant then focused his attention back on Mr Hill, landing a second blow to his head and causing him to “drop like a stone”. Witnesses heard a “resounding crack” as his head hit the footpath. Unconscious and unresponsive, Mr Hill was taken to Ashburton Hospital, then transferred to Christchurch with two skull fractures and a brain bleed. He has since been diagnosed with post traumatic amnesia, has problems recognising people and recalling events, and faces a lengthy recovery. In explanation Kuru-Nathan said he been drinking heavily for three days beforehand. He was remanded in custody for sentencing on November 10.
