THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Landslide for Nats Mid Canterbury’s incumbent MPs dealt crushing defeats on their rivals in a general election that saw their party sweep to power with enough seats to govern alone. The National Party won its third term in office on Saturday and, before special votes were counted, looked set to have 61 seats in a 121 seat Parliament. Party leader John Key yesterday promised National would not be complacent after its landslide win, which made it the first party in the history of MMP in New Zealand to have the numbers to govern alone. Meanwhile, Labour Party leader David Cunliffe faced the possibility of a leadership challenge after the historic defeat that saw his party lose three seats from what it had before the election. His party’s Rangitata candidate, Steve Gibson, yesterday said he did not support Mr Cunliffe who, early in the campaign, distanced himself from Mr Gibson after the candidate levelled an anti-Semitic slur at Mr Key. The threat of recriminations followed a landslide that was writ-large in the Mid Canter-

bury seats, where both National Party candidates were re-elected with sizeable majorities. Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew received 21,883 votes to secure a 13,152 majority over her nearest rival, Mr Gibson. The margin was more than twice that of the 2011 election. In Selwyn, which includes the north-east section of the old Rangitata electorate, Amy Adams received 22,182 votes 18,665 more than Green Party candidate Peter Hill. Mrs Goodhew watched the results come in with 100 others, including family, at Phar Lap Raceway in Timaru. She described the feeling as “magic”. Before leaving to clean up the function centre yesterday, she said it was “fantastic to have a mandate to continue” her party’s programme. Mrs Adams celebrated at the Kirwee Community Hall, also with about 100 people. “I’m new to many of the people in the Ashburton District part of the electorate and we worked pretty hard to make sure they knew me and I’m very delighted, that’s incredibly humbling,” she said.

Rangitata National MP Jo Goodhew thanks supporters on election night, with husband Mark and daughters Harriet (left) and Emily. PM John Key celebrates the landslide victory.
