Allenton’s PostShop and Kiwibank are closing, leaving Ashburton with just one full postal outlet.

Owner Brian Collins says he was told about four weeks ago that Kiwibank and NZ Post were pulling out of Allenton and that meant he had no option but to close his doors.

“This takes one full outlet out and the queues in town will now be even longer. It means a loss of service and convenience for Allenton and people from all over town who’ve come to us,” Mr Collins said.

Banking and postal services will be withdrawn at the end of the month but Mr Collins will remain open for a few more weeks to sell off the rest of his stock.

“I’d been thinking about selling and retiring, but with this hanging over me, I haven’t been able to sell.

I’ll just have a closing down sale and that will be the end of it,” he said.

He’s been in business in the Allenton Mall for about 12 years and before that ran a postal business

from another location in the Allenton shopping centre.

Shutting his business means he’ll take a financial hit. He’s suggested other options to Kiwibank to keep the business open, but there has been little interest.

“I suggested they might look at self service kiosks here, but apparently we don’t meet the transaction numbers. I suggest they stand in one of our queues and watch. Some days we’re flat out. I feel really sorry for all the loyal people who’ve supported us for so long.”

He’s had a staff of three and was looking at a fourth, but with closure in the wind, service is now down to just the boss.

Mr Collins has watched post volumes decline but said the Allenton centre was still busy with other postal services.

“The internet and email might be killing post but Trade Me means you still need to post parcels.”

Key sworn in John Key has been officially sworn in as Prime Minister in a ceremony at Government House. In all, 27 ministers were sworn in by Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae. Four of them were taking the ministers’ oath for the first time - National’s Maggie Barry, Louise Upston and Paul Goldsmith, and the Maori Party’s Te Ururoa Flavell. Mr Key said the new ministers should “savour the moment” because they had a huge workload in front of them. “The workload of a minister of the Crown is enormous. It demands great sacrifices from your family and you do that with their blessing.”

Cyrus in New Zealand US pop star Miley Cyrus has arrived in Auckland for her first New Zealand concert. The singer played at Vector Arena last night as part of her worldwide Bangerz tour, and yesterday dodged the media pack by slipping out of Auckland Airport unnoticed. Reporters, security officials and a few fans were camped outside a side entrance ready for the singer to arrive but at the last minute her team decided to change her exit route. Cyrus was bundled into a black Mercedes at the back entrance and sped off to a hotel in the city, thought to be either the Langham or Pullman. So quick was her departure that she left her luggage at the airport for her team to pick up. Cyrus, 21, was cutting it fine to get to New Zealand.

She took in some late-night partying at celeb hotspot The Roxy in Los Angeles the night before hopping on a 12-hour flight. Such was the excitement for last night’s concert that some on social media had thought they spotted the star in Auckland this week before her plane touched down. Insiders say her stay will be fleeting – she’ll be jetting to Melbourne for her next gig tomorrow.

Hoverboard arrives a year early Back to the Future fans have been waiting for a hoverboard for more than two decades and finally the future appears to have arrived - a year earlier than the movie promised. The appearance of the gravity defying skateboard-like toy was one of the iconic images of the 1980s movie franchise.

Such was the interest in the device, rumours sparked by director Robert Zemekis long had many thinking the hoverboard seen in the movies was a real toy whose release had been banned or delayed. While those rumours have since been debunked, attendees at this month’s Gold Coast International Marine Expo will get the chance to see a hoverboard in action. The device is the latest invention by French jetski racer Frank Zapata, following on from his Flyboard, a water-propelled jetpack which allows people to hover over and dive into water. The hoverboard will be displayed during an extreme stunt show at the expo by Australian supplier Flyboard X. The real hoverboard needs water to power its jets and keep it airborne. Flyboard X director Dale Jeffrey said the new product, which will cost $7690 to purchase complete kit, allows the user to combine the worlds of wakeboarding and flying.

Tweets hint at Potter return JK Rowling has sent Harry Potter fans into an anagram-deciphering frenzy after posting a tweet that led many to speculate the young wizard will return. Rowling tweeted a series of cryptic messages yesterday, including: “Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My wand wont tolerate this nonsense.” Rumours soon went into overdrive in a bid to crack the code. They came up with with: “Harry Returns! Wont say any details now! A week off! No comment.” But Rowling hinted that one fan’s guess of “Newt Scamander’s History of New York Fauna: One town, my tale” was much warmer. The message references Rowling’s new Potter spin-off screenplay based on her novel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The book, published in 2001 under the pseudonym Newt Scamander, is based on the fictional magizoologist’s Hogwarts textbook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Disease difficult to diagnose

While the disease mimicked acute appendicitis, he thought gall stones could be more likely to be the cause as the pain was higher in her abdomen.

However, medical investigations proved gall stones were not to blame, and he admitted the woman into Ashburton Hospital last week for a CT scan in order to exclude appendicitis.

The scan showed a swollen and infected bowel, and later a stool specimen confirmed yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Patients with yersinia pseudotuberculosis can be difficult to diagnose, says an Ashburton doctor who treated an Ashburton woman with the illness.

A nationwide outbreak of the disease has links to the consumption of lettuce and bagged carrots. There have been 69 cases confirmed in Canterbury, including one Ashburton case.

The doctor, who did not wish to be named, said yesterday the woman had presented to him with severe tummy pains.

the contamination among New Zealand suppliers. It may be one supplier involved or there might be several.

The peak of the outbreak was last month, with only one further confirmed case in Canterbury over the past two days.

“We are not seeing anything like the numbers we were seeing a couple of weeks ago,” Dr Humphrey said.

Washing vegetables did not guarantee consumer safety, but “it’s always better to do that”, he said. People should throw out old lettuce and carrots.

■ WELLINGTON FAULT

New fault found in Wellington harbour Moving capital status away from Wellington because of a recently discovered fault line through the city is “fanciful”, Prime Minister John Key says.

NIWA yesterday revealed the 10,000-year-old Aotea Fault, which runs for at least 2km under the harbour from Oriental Parade to Westpac Stadium.

NIWA marine geologist Philip Barnes said data also indicated the fault could reach up to 30km in length, running onshore across the city to the Cook Strait on the southern shoreline.

The fault could produce a significant quake, reaching between 6.3 to 7.1 in magnitude.

The exact path of the fault was not yet known, Dr Barnes said.

“We have several traces of the fault as it runs onshore.”

City authorities say the stringent building codes based on the larger Wellington fault line meant buildings would be resilient against any tremor from

Insurance companies also were not spooked by the discovery, with the Insurance Council of New Zealand saying it was unlikely to have any impact on insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses.

dramatically increase Wellington’s earthquake risk appreciably will mean it’s unlikely there will be any impact on insurance premiums,” ICNZ chief executive Tim Grafton said.

Dr Barnes said in the past 10,000 years the fault had been responsible for two sizeable quakes. The first, 8400 years ago, plus or minus 1300 years, offset the ground by 4m.

The second, 6200 years ago, plus or minus 900 years, caused a 2m offset, he said.

Magpies with attitude are troubling people walking in and around an Allenton park.

The birds appear to be based in trees at the western end of Argyle Park and are guarding their territory ferociously, according to people who have used the park, or walked past, over the past three to four weeks.

Lyn Tippet is one who has been targeted by the birds, while out walking her Labrador Honey.

“They are just protecting their young but they come out further than you think they would,” she said.

She has been dive-bombed while giving Honey a run in the park, in a big open area, often swooping in behind.

“You’ve got to have eyes in the back of your head,” she said.

There’s more than one; she’s seen one guarding by the trees while another patrols further out on the field.

Another Allenton resident who regularly walks in the area had a run-in with the bird on Farm Road, when heading towards Racecourse Road.

“It came at me from behind three times and it wouldn’t leave me along so I went and grabbed a stick,” the woman, who didn’t want to be named, said.

“It’s definitely not a very nice bird at the moment.”

She had altered her walking route now and wondered if others had done the same.

“I wouldn’t walk through there (yesterday morning) and I didn’t see anyone else down Farm Road, and normally you’d see a few,” she said.

Plans to retain ATM

Low customer counts were generally the catalyst for the closure of a Kiwibank franchise, says bank communications manager Bruce Thompson.

“We don’t like it when we close outlets because it does affect our customers but we believe here there will be a relatively small impact because there’s another outlet about two kilometres away,” he said.

When the Allenton shop closes Kiwibank, plans to retain an ATM machine in the shopping centre and is now looking for

another location. The decision to withdraw services coincided with the signalled retirement of franchise owner Brian Collins, Mr Thompson said.

For New Zealand Post, communications manager Richard Trow said the pending retirement of the shop owner and the likely closure of the shop prompted the withdrawal of the postal business.

“To this point we have been unable to find a suitable business to replace it. The ATM and post boxes will remain on site until the store closes or another location can be found.”

Mr Trow said NZPost was looking for a replacement host business.

The closure of Allenton’s Kiwibank and PostShop next month is the second signal that tenancies in the Allenton Mall are changing.

With plans for a new medical centre in Allens Road working through the resource consent process, the centre is also likely to lose its key medical centre tenants within two years.

Those changes, however, are not concerning owners David and Gay Luke.

“We’ve been lucky, we’ve had

some very good long-term tenants for about 10 years, but we are disappointed for Allenton really that we’re losing the postal outlet. People from all over town use it,” Mrs Luke said.

While the Allenton medical centre move would be some time off, the Lukes will be looking for new tenants to take up the postal agency space.

“It’s not just us losing a key tenant here, it’s the shopping centre. The PostShop generates a lot of foot traffic up there, but I’m sure another good, key tenant will come along.”

Rubbish collection decisions still to be made

This week the Ashburton District Council decided to toss out its old black plastic rubbish bags and replace them with smart new wheelie bins.

That decision, however, made after a long string of public consultation, will not take effect until July 2017. And that leaves the council with a dilemma on its hands.

Its current refuse collection contract expires in June next year, and it originally planned to have the modern day collection signed and sealed and contract in place, ready for the new year.

On Tuesday, after an afternoon of deliberation and debate, it decided to push the change out for two years.

That’s left council staff grap-

pling with the best options for rubbish collection over the interim two years, said council service delivery group manager Neil McCann.

“We are currently considering what options there are for the two years leading up to the new contract.

“It wouldn’t be feasible to tender for a new contract for two years, so we are exploring some ‘innovative ways to maintain the current service, without increasing the cost too much, whilst also seeing if we can introduce bins,” he said.

The council would look at all options and would work through details over the next few weeks, but a key issue would be maintaining a similar level of service, Mr McCann said.

In brief Organ donation New Zealanders will be encouraged to have an important conversation on Saturday, as Organ Donation New Zealand holds its annual Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Day. This year’s event will see participating cafes supporting the cause by adding stickers saying ‘have the conversation today’ to the top of takeaway coffee cups. Sexually assaulted

A Kiwi woman in Sydney on business has been sexually assaulted by a group of men after she met up with one man she had been introduced to via a mobile dating app. The 28-yearold connected with the man through the dating app Tinder, and then met him on Saturday night at a restaurant in the inner city suburb of Kings Cross before accompanying him to a bar nearby. There, the pair where they were joined by a number of the man’s friends. Detective Inspector Michael Haddow of the Sydney Sex Crimes Squad said later in the night the woman began to feel dizzy. She later found herself at a property she was not familiar with; there, she was sexually assaulted by a number of men. The woman managed to leave the property on Sunday before reporting the matter to colleagues who called the police.

Housing needs ‘urgent’

Ashburton desperately needs boarding house style accommodation for single men, says Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan.

She’s welcoming signals that the Government’s social housing spend will be boosted, but said the extra money had to spread outside the main centres because Ashburton’s social housing needs were every bit as urgent as those in Auckland and Christchurch.

And while the greater social housing investment could see social agencies playing a greater role in this area

rather than the Government, that responsibility had to be matched with cash. Finding good solutions would be directly related to the amount of money available, Mrs Girvan said.

“If you had say $3 million you’d build 10 houses if you’re lucky and that’s only 10 families.”

If that same amount of money was spent providing accommodation for single men the reach could be wider and while purpose built was the ideal, something like a block of motel units could provide a quick fix, she said.

Last week Presbyterian Support had to find accom-

modation for two older men and while this was provided short term in camping grounds, that simply pushed finding a long-term solution out a few weeks rather than solving the problem, she said.

“Often these are older men who are better living on their own than in a flat or they’re single men who may have nothing, so how do you set them up in a flat.”

Solutions had to be found, but the best solutions were always long-term and costly, Mrs Girvan said.

“We could do this (provide social housing) but we couldn’t fund it.”

The Ashburton District

Council provides housing for the elderly but it does not see itself as a provider of social housing, council commercial manager John Rooney said.

“At one stage we looked at a partnership with Housing New Zealand but that never gained any traction.”

The council was committed to providing housing for the elderly, seeing this as a strategic asset. The housing units are self-funding from rent.

While the number of units matched demand at the moment, Mr Rooney said the council had additional land available if more units were needed.

■ SMOKEFREE INITIATIVE

By Kurt Bayer Abandoned earthquake-damaged homes in Christchurch’s residential red zone are being booby-trapped in a mystery that has so far baffled police.

Police are concerned at the secret devices that have been rigged to injure or maim intruders to the wrecked homes.

While the properties may lie abandoned, and have become popular targets for burglars, thieves, and arsonists, they have also emerged as makeshift refuges for the city’s homeless population.

They are also visited by staff from Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera), security workers, and police officers, as well as construction or demolition workers. But they are now all in danger of the possum traps and other homemade devices that have been placed at entrances to various properties in the east of the city.

Cera alerted police to the “very small number of properties in the residential red zone where an attempt has been made to create a hazard for someone entering the building,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Police have attended these properties but to date investigations have not identified who may have been responsible,” she said.

Cera staff do regular safety checks on properties within the residential red zone, while a security firm is also employed to conduct regular checks 24 hours a day, seven days a week. - APNZ

Ashburton office manager Charli Kattie was once determined she would never start smoking.

“I never thought I would take it up, seeing mum smoke and then my ex-partner smoke,” Miss Kattie said.

But about one year ago she turned to cigarettes, during a stressful time associated with moving house, and countries.

Miss Kattie is from Adelaide originally and has settled in Ashburton where she will be marrying her partner from the town next month.

She has smoked about 15 cigarettes per day for the past year, but is this month taking part in the nationwide Stoptober health initiative to encourage people to give up smoking.

For the first couple of days she used nicotine patches, but

has relied on willpower alone since.

Seven days in yesterday, an app on her phone informed her she had so far saved $82.56.

In one year’s time that figure would accumulate to $3766.

Another app on her phone has informed her she has already increased her life span by seven hours.

Miss Kattie could not be

happier, and is confident she will stay off the cigarettes, forever.

“I feel really good. I feel I don’t smell anymore, my skin is clearing up, things taste better, I think I can breathe better.”

She has even been able to take her mum with her on the journey.

The pair Skype and Viber daily to share their experiences of being smokefree.

Driver charged after chase

By Kurt Bayer The logging truck driver who led police on a “bizarre” highspeed chase after being pepper-sprayed is now facing nine charges.

Police were first alerted at about 11.40am when a member of the public complained about the driving behaviour of a an unladen logging truck and trailer on State Highway 1, near Waihola, 40km south of Dunedin.

The “extremely aggressive” man became belligerent when pulled over in the township of Milton a short time later, police said.

An officer pepper-sprayed him but it “had no effect”.

“The driver got back into his truck and drove off at speed,”

Senior sergeant Matt Scoles of Dunedin police said.

Driving at alleged speeds of up to 120km/h through the Manuka Gorge and towards Lawrence, he managed to evade police spikes.

Officers gave up the chase when they judged it was becoming too “dangerous” on the rural backroads.

But the truck was sighted again, near Gabriel’s Gully.

Officers rushed to the area and found the truck stationary on Munro Road about 8km from Lawrence.

“The driver was extremely aggressive towards police when stopped and was eventually apprehended after being subdued by the deployment of Taser,” Mr Scoles said.

The 28-year old driver, from

Dunedin, was provided with medical assistance from St John at the scene.

He was later charged with a total of nine offences, including two of failing to stop, five for giving false details, obstruction, disorderly behaviour, threatening behaviour, escaping custody, dangerous driving, and assaulting police.

Police staff from Milton, Balclutha and Lawrence were involved in the incident.

An investigation is ongoing.

“It was a really unusual set of circumstances by all accounts.

Bizarre,” said Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of the Southern District Command Centre.

Mr Scott said while the pursuit traversed a largely rural area, the chase had to be abandoned when the speeds got

“dangerously high”.

“He has ended up is in the middle of nowhere, but it was a good result in the end,” Mr Scott said.

Police said how the driver managed to carry on after being pepper-sprayed would be looked at.

“With pepper-spray, firstly you’ve got to hit the eyes, and a lot of factors can affect that – the skill level of the officer deploying it, wind conditions, whether the guy is wearing sunglasses or a peaked cap, or manages to turn his head, and for some people it just doesn’t have the same effect,” said Mr Scott.

“Any use of force that we use form part of the investigation.”

Charged with murder A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with the murder of Whangarei man Michael Patrick Griffin. The teenager appeared in the Whangarei Youth Court yesterday and was remanded in custody until later this month.

Judge Greg Davis said when the Whangarei teenager appeared on October 23 it would be in the High Court. Head of the investigation Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said the arrest yesterday came about through information supplied by the Whangarei community and good police work.

Six injured in crash A person has died and half a dozen people injured in a car crash near Ngongotaha. A St John Ambulance northern communications spokesman said the crash happened on State Highway 36 (Hamurana Road) about 1.40pm. He said it appeared six people were injured when a van collided with another vehicle. One person sustained critical injuries and died while being transferred by ambulance to Rotorua Hospital, he said. Another person, a man believed to be in his 50s, was in a critical condition and was being transferred to Rotorua Hospital.

Two others sustained moderate injuries, while the remaining two suffered minor injuries. All were being transferred to Rotorua Hospital.

Page shut down Campaigners against sexual violence say universities must go further to protect female students from exploitation after explicit pictures were shared on a social media site. The Dunedin-focused “Rack Appreciation Society” page has been shut down, less than 48 hours after another Facebook group “Skank Central Christchurch Name and Shame” was disabled.

Between them, the groups had at least 5000 members. Content on the first page included explicit pictures of female Otago University students taken without those students’ permission.

Wellington Rape Crisis said the “exploitative” groups were the result of unenlightened attitudes towards women and privacy.

Eleanor Butterworth, Wellington Rape Crisis agency manager, alleged at least one of Otago’s student association officers was a “Rack” page administrator, or had shared content.

Father distraught at three-month-old baby’s death The father of a 3-month old baby whose death is now subject to a homicide probe says “everyone wants answers .... and I don’t even have any myself ”.

Distraught dad Corey Neligan is struggling to come to terms with his young son’s death more than five weeks ago.

Yesterday, he struggled to put into words the “nasty” pain he is

going through. Mr Neligan said: “I’ll remember him as being the best thing that ever came into my life. Period.”

Emergency services responded to a report of a baby suffering a head injury and breathing difficulties at a rural Coaltrack Road, near Burnham 30km south of Christchurch, at 6.45am on August 30.

Soul Mathew Turany was flown to Christchurch Hospital

by Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition.

He was taken off life support just after 3am the following day.

Mr Neligan, originally from Masterton, was working at Coaltrack Road dairy farm when he met Storm Turany who had moved over from Dongara,

Western Australia.

They entered a casual relationship and she fell pregnant late last year.

Mr Neligan moved to a new job as herd manager on a farm in Fernside, North Canterbury.

On August 30, his world was shattered by news that Soul had been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

He has remained in touch with Ms Turany, who did not respond to queries from APNZ yesterday.

They have exchanged tributes on Facebook to their young son.

It took more than five weeks for police to reveal the death.

In a statement on Tuesday, police said they had launched a homicide investigation. - APNZ

Sporting playground taking shape

Today it’s a workplace that’s home to around 80 tradesmen; in less than six months the EA Networks Centre will be the Ashburton District’s aquatic and sporting playground for 31,000 locals.

From tilers painstakingly working in the four-pool aquatic centre, to electricians crawling around in roof spaces, the River Terrace sports complex is alive from daylight to dark, six days a week.

And that activity is all about completing the $32 million plus recreational centre on budget and on time, said project manager Nick Courane.

It’s his job to make sure tradesmen are where they are needed, when they’re needed. He deals with countless questions, queries and site visitors every day.

He carries project details in his head, and knows where every one is and what they’re doing at any given minute of the day.

The four-court stadium is al-

most completed.

It comes with fixed seating for 400, ample space for wheelchairs and space to roll in extra seating for big matches. Court run-off is extensive and meets national A grade ANZ netball standards.

Its roof is almost a hectare in area.

In the pool area there’s scaffolding, building material in every direction, tilers crawling along pool bottoms and wall to wall tradies. But slowly, the complex is taking shape. It doesn’t take much imagination to see it in its finished state.

Each pool can be accessed by people on foot and in chairs.

There are no barriers. And it’s an area flooded with natural light from massive north facing windows.

Even the learn to swim area can be used by the smallest of children, with a carefully stepped entrance, while the lazy river and wet play areas have ground level access.

When the complex is completed, it will be easy to take a break from swimming, stroll into the café, enjoy a coffee in the ‘wet’ area and then resume swimming.

If you don’t fancy a wet coffee break, then there will be a dry seating area available too, inside or out.

If the inside is impressive, then the exterior is equally so.

Graders and rollers are smoothing parking areas and landscaping plans are well advanced.

And then there’s the building itself – creatively patterned precast concrete panels, massive wooden beams that resemble mountain ranges and hectares of glass.

The 80-plus tradie workforce still has months of work ahead, but the back of the project has been broken, Mr Courane said.

The remaining work falls into the ‘finishing’ basket, with everything channelled towards handover day of March 4, 2015.

IS fighters advance Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane is about to fall and criticised the US-led bombing campaign against Islamic State militants as an insufficient response.

“You cannot bring this terror to an end only through air strikes,” said Erdogan in comments carried by the Anadolou news agency as he spoke to refugees in the southeastern Turkish city of Gaziantep.

He renewed calls for the formation of a zone of protection and a no-fly zone over Syria, saying that moderate fighters in the Syrian opposition had to be strengthened.

The Turkish leader’s comments came as Kurdish fighters battled the jihadists in the streets of Kobane and a US-led coalition pounded Islamic State positions on the outskirts.

The US is pushing for Turkey to bolster its own efforts against Islamic State.

Secretary of State John Kerry has called Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu twice since Monday, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Brett McGurk, who are on a tour of the region working to build support for the US fight against Islamic State, are to meet with officials in Ankara later this week, Psaki said.

The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) managed to push the jihadists back from some streets in eastern Kobane, but the extremists also pushed into the southwest of the town, which is located on Syria’s border with Turkey, the opposition British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Kobane defence chief Ismet Hassan said that the YPG had captured several pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machineguns.

Kurdish news site Welati reported that the YPG had lost 12 fighters in the clashes and inflicted “dozens” of casualties.

There were only a few dozen civilians remaining in the city, Hassan said.

In brief China quake leaves one dead A strong earthquake that hit southwest China’s mountainous Yunnan province has killed one person and left more than 300 people injured as well as 50,000 displaced, state media reports say. The shallow 6.0 magnitude quake hit yesterday in a region that lies close to China’s borders with Myanmar (Burma) and Laos, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. One person was so far known to have died, the official Xinhua news agency said. It added that 324 people were injured, mainly in Jinggu County, close to the epicentre of the quake.

London anti-terror swoop Four suspected Islamist terrorists have been arrested in a series of raids across London, in which a 21-year-old man was tasered.

Counter-terrorism police arrested the men, aged between 20 and 21, and at one address were helped by armed officers but no shots were fired, Scotland Yard said yesterday.

A 21-year-old suspect was tasered during his arrest but was not injured and did not require medical treatment, the force added.

All men were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism and have been taken to police stations in central London and remain in custody.

Spain ebola case fuels fear of EU outbreak Spain is investigating how a nurse in Madrid could have become infected with ebola, sparking fears of the first outbreak outside Africa.

The inquiry was launched as the EU demanded answers from the Spanish authorities about how the disease could have spread in a specialist Madrid unit where the woman treated two elderly Spanish missionaries who died from the virus.

Tests confirmed she has the disease, government officials said, making her the first person to contract the virus outside Africa.

The 40-year-old began to feel ill on September 30 while on leave after treating the two patients in the isolation unit of Madrid’s La Paz-Carlos III hospital. But she did not go to hospital until Sunday five days later - complaining of a fever, government officials said.

She is now being treated in the same unit.

The infected nurse is believed to have contracted the virus six weeks later while caring for Garcia Viejo, whose room officials said she visited twice, once to treat him and once to clean the room.

Both missionaries were treated in the isolation unit at the hospital, and the medical team that cared for them were closely monitored.

In Brussels yesterday an EU spokesman said the European Commission had written to the Spanish health ministry demanding an explanation.

A dead baby bear found dumped in New York’s Central Park was killed by being run over, an autopsy has concluded.

The mysterious discovery of the sixmonth-old female cub in a grassy area in Manhattan’s largest park on Monday baffled conservationists and police. The New York state department of environmental conservation, which on Tuesday performed a necropsy, said that the cause of death was “blunt force trauma consistent with a motor vehicle collision”. The department said it was investigating criminal offences including “illegal possession, transport and disposal of an untagged bear”. Police said the bear sustained trauma to its body.

ublic officials should not be afraid of a short-term dent in a company’s sales if they suspect its products are partially linked to even manageable public health scares.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) and public health officials have opened the door to doubt after a less-than co-ordinated series of public health warnings this week.

Both groups have warned a Yersinia pseudotuberculosis outbreak has affected people across the country, including in Ashburton, and both say its source continues to be investigated.

However, MPI – which has already investigated the backstory of some of those affected –would not confirm the sort of food it may be linked to, or where the food came from. It was too early to warn people off foods that might not even be implicated.

Conversely, medical officers of health in Canterbury and Auckland said preliminary investigations suggested it may be linked to lettuce or pre-packaged carrots. They named the food, but not its brand or where it came from.

It seems remarkable that investigations into the source of an illness can identify the food likely linked to the illness and the form in which the food was bought, but not the brand the packaging carried.

So remarkable, in fact, that what might be otherwise be considered caution could easily be misread as uncertainty or even as fear of offending a business that will fight to protect its reputation.

Fair enough if the agencies are still not entirely sure of their evidence, but there is already a danger that a broadbrush warning about something reasonably specific will have an impact on many others.

The suggestion any public health message is better than none will be lost on fresh vegetable producers now dealing with consumer speculation as to which products are implicated.

Some people will have followed official advice and thrown out store-bought lettuce and bagged carrots if it was more than a fortnight old. But what lettuces and bagged carrots will take their place?

If the community wishes the building to be pulled down and a memorial erected, then the community and council should babe together and fundraise to buy the property from the owners for a fair market price. Then, and only then, can anyone have a say on what to do with it.

Was a pain going back to bags when I was living in Ashburton, felt backwards.

oting is something we all have to do at some point in our lives whether it is for Head Boy and Girl, the Ashburton College Board of Trustees, the top 40 songs in New Zealand or for which game to play next at your 6th birthday party.

One voting system which has recently been available to New Zealanders is the vote for the governing party of our country. Most eligible New Zealanders will have voted many times before, but like every year there is a group of 18-year-olds who are still in school and have little knowledge about the process.

But how to vote is not their main concern; who to vote for is the biggest question for them.

A group of Ashburton College students became eligible to vote this year, and when I spoke to a handful of students about why they chose their selected candidate/party, their responses were interesting.

Some were following in the footsteps of their parents or caregivers because it was explained to them that this was the right way to vote. But, most commonly, they told me about how their chosen party promised something that had spoke to them and that they liked their campaign.

So, this led me to believe that these new and naive voters were simply influenced by what they see and what they hear.

National then being elected into Government would of course make sense because there are numerous younger voters now, and which teenager wouldn’t vote for a visual campaign on the TV with Eminem style music in it?

John Key has also visited local schools many times and was involved with the care of our community after a recent tragedy so, for Ashburton teens, seeing a great leader in action was sure to affect their voting choice.

Dairy farmers drift north Farmers from southern provinces are moving to Northland to take advantage of the comparatively cheap dairy farms on offer there, according to real estate agency Bayleys.

In the past 18 months, $20 million worth of Northland dairy farms have been sold to Waikato, King Country, Taranaki, Canterbury, and Westland farmers moving into the province, and the trend is accelerating, Bayleys’ Northland rural manager Tony Grindle said.

He said dairy farming in Northland was undergoing the biggest shake-up the sector had seen in more than 50 years thanks to interest shown from outside the province by both corporates and families.

Generally speaking, young Northland farmers wanting to get into the dairying sector didn’t have the comparable “financial muscle” being brought to the region by out-of-town

buyers who were selling up their high-value units in New Zealand’s most productive pastoral zones, he said Latest figures from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) show the average cost per hectare of dairy farms in Northland was $15,555 per hectare.

By comparison, the REINZ figures show the average cost per hectare of dairy farms in the Waikato was $49,000, while in Taranaki it was as high as $55,000 per hectare.

Grindle said there were a number of reasons why Northland farmers had chosen now as a good time to exit the market – ranging from the drop in Fonterra’s forecast milk solids payout for the 2024/15 financial year, and a lack of succession planning for some older farmers looking to retire, through to the second consecutive dry season for those in the western coastal region.

Life is better in the South Island Just as Mainlanders have always thought, life in the South Island is better than life in the North Island.

A new OECD report comparing wellbeing across different regions around the world has given the South Island a better report card.

The Regional Wellbeing report, released yesterday, rated the South better in seven out of nine indicators: income, jobs, civic engagement, housing, safety and health.

The biggest disparity between the two islands was in the jobs category, which compared employment rates. The South Island received a ranking of 9.4 out of 10, compared to 7.6 for the North Island.

The South Island was ranked in the top 7 per cent in the OECD for jobs, while the North Island ranked in the top 32 per cent.

South Islanders were slightly ahead of the north for income levels - scoring a 4.0 compared to 3.3 for the north.

That’s despite not being quite as well educated as North Islanders - which scored 6.8 for education, compared to 6.7 for Mainlanders.

The two islands were equal on “access to services”, with a score of 8.3, and environment, where both scored a perfect

The report compared 362 regions in 34 countries, based on national statistics provided to the OECD. The scores for both islands ranked similar to Queensland, Northern Norway, North Middle Sweden and Prince Edward Island in Canada.

While the report didn’t name an overall top-ranked region, the Australian Capital Territory ranked scores above 8.5 for every category, and scored four scores of 10.0 in income, civic engagement, safety and health.

The report found that while 15 American states and the Australian Capital Territory scored 10 in income, the American stats also had low scores in safety, health or environment.

The five best ranking regions were Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia, New Hampshire (USA), Queensland, New South Wales.

Ripple control Up to 80 per cent of Auckland electricity customers have signed contracts that allow their hot water cut off at a moments knowledge - but many were unaware until Vector cut hot water during the power outage crisis this week.

As power was finally restored to customers yesterday who had been without since a fire at a Penrose substation on Sunday took out 85,000 Vector customers, many were still without hot water.

Vector spokeswoman Sandy Hodge said it was due to ‘ripple control’ - where customers on ‘controlled rates’ can have the power to their hot water systems cut in order to maintain electricity supply during peak times. - APNZ

Cruise season starts The cruise ship season started yesterday with the Radiance of the Seas arriving in Wellington. The 90,090-tonne Royal Caribbean ship is mid-size by global standards, can carry more than 2100 passengers and has a crew of 858. An economic report from Cruise New Zealand shows cruise ships are expected to make 124 voyages around New Zealand in 2014-15, spending 712 days at ports. The main cruise ports and emerging cruise destinations like Nelson, Kaikoura and Stewart Island are all expected to reap the benefit of spending by passengers and crew, said Cruise NZ general manager Raewyn Tan. The sector has been forecast to contribute $373.4 million to the New Zealand economy in 2014-15 and support almost 7000 jobs.

Rejig for repo men Debt collectors and repo men need to clean up their act says the Commerce Commission, which next year gets new powers to directly crack down on shoddy practices. Commission chairman Mark Berry said the regulator had its eye on issues in the debt collection industry after yesterday announcing a settlement with Broadlands Finance, a consumer lending business owned by Tony Radisich. Broadlands, which offers motor vehicle finance, charged customers interest and fees after repossessed property had been sold, a commission investigation found. This is banned under the Credit Repossession Act. The new powers come into force next year.

Avocadoes off shore As New Zealand’s avocado season gets under way, plans are afoot to increase exports to Asia. Jen Scoular, chief executive of the industry group New Zealand Avocado, said the sector’s new primary growth partnership with the Ministry for Primary Industries aimed to triple productivity to 12 tonnes per hectare and quadruple industry returns to $280 million by 2023. “Increasing our exports to Asia is a significant part of that plan, and we are involved in a series of events in key markets to raise the profile of amazing New Zealand avocados,” she said in a statement. NZ Avocado has been holding cooking events in Tokyo and Singapore over the last two weeks, and plans a third at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi this week.

Growers form splinter group A group of kiwifruit post-harvest operators sent an open letter to Prime Minister John Key stating they did not support a claim being lodged against the Government for damages caused by the Psa infestation. The group claimed to represent 75 per cent of the post-harvest sector.

The kiwifruit class action has been brought by a group of growers who believe they have the basis for a legal claim against BiosecurityNZ for negligence over Psa, which caused major losses to

growers.

Needle grass poses major threat Chilean needle grass would establish well in Mid Canterbury, according to a map recently released as part of a campaign to eradicate the noxious weed.

The map shows a significant area of the plains would provide optimum conditions for the grass, which has already been found in North Canterbury.

The Chilean Needle Grass Awareness Programme, which is behind the campaign, is also releasing an updated seed identification card and range of brochures recommending safe biosecurity practices to prevent this exotic pest spreading further.

Nearly 400 farm biosecurity signs have been distributed in the past six months to farms across New Zealand in tandem with a Facebook project (www.facebook.com/chileanneedlegrass) highlighting what Chilean needle grass looks like.

Chilean needle grass has been found on approximately 3700 hectares in Canterbury, Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay. It could infest an estimated 15 million hectares nationwide if measures to contain it are not carried out by landowners and visitors to rural properties, posing a significant threat to arable and pastoral farming in New Zealand.

Chilean needle grass is most recognisable in late spring and early summer during flowering due to its distinctive reddish purple seed heads with long tails up to 7cm in length.

Awareness programme coordinator Jenna Taylor said land-

owners, rural contractors and visitors to farms should keep a close eye out from this month for the unusual-looking needle grass.

“We’re hoping rural communities will be better placed to identify Chilean needle grass in coming months following the

social media, signage and brochure campaign,” she said.

A sign-written promotional biosecurity vehicle and trailer has been obtained to draw attention to the campaign and will carry the message over the spring and summer months to remind landowners in Can-

terbury, Marlborough and the Hawke’s Bay regions that Chilean needle grass remains a risk for them.

Farm biosecurity signs are still available for interested farmers and can be accessed free of charge from Environment Canterbury.

Farmer wants Alliance to lead consolidation

Wanaka farmer and vet Mandy Bell will stand as a candidate in the Alliance farmer director elections.

Dr Bell, who has been farming Criffel Station for 22 years, said she has been asking why is it that New Zealand sheep, beef and deer farmers cannot achieve solid returns on a sustainable basis.

“It doesn’t make sense when we are the world’s number one lamb and deer exporter, one of the top five beef exporters, and there is growing international demand for protein.”

She believes that overcapacity, poor procurement practices and compromised marketing are eroding the profitability of the red meat sector, and points to farmers leaving the industry and sheep and deer numbers dropping as evidence of this.

“There is only one answer if we are to truly reverse these trends and achieve sustained profitability,” she said.

“Our industry has to be restructured and consolidated. This requires the right people sitting around Alliance’s board table. People who share a vision for a vertically integrated, market led, farmer controlled co-op and want to see Alliance shareholders benefit from this.”

Dr Bell said preliminary findings from MIE’s farmer attitudes survey showed that 86 per cent would or may support a restructuring of the country’s red meat industry, suggesting there was considerable consensus among farmers.

“We’ve talked about it for long enough. We have all the supporting reports – initiated in recent times as part of the Red Meat Sector Strategy Report. I want to get on and help make it happen now. The steps we need to take are clear.

“Firstly, Alliance Group needs to lead the consolidation. Secondly, we should be encouraging other parties to join this consolidation. Thirdly, as farmer shareholders we need to come together to create one well-resourced co-operative capable of

In standing for election Dr Bell resigned from her position on the MIE executive committee earlier this week.

A Rotomanu farmer will stand trial early next year for his part in the starvation and death of hundreds of cattle.

David Anthony Ham faces charges of animal cruelty and failing to keep stock adequately fed and watered, alongside Jeremy William Usher, and his father Robert William Usher.

In 2012, Ham leased a farm and 300 cows to the Ushers, which once combined with cows they owned took the total number of animals on the property to more than 900.

However, a Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) inspection on August 28 that year found 636 of the 926 cows on the farm were in “very poor condition”, having suffered from starvation for three to four months previously.

Of those, 128 animals had to be immediately sent for slaughter while a further 152 had to be shot on the spot. The rest of the herd was distributed to neighbouring farms to recover, leaving just 50 animals on the farm.

Both Ham and the Ushers were subsequently charged with animal cruelty and failing to keep stock adequately fed and watered.

However, at a hearing in the Greymouth District Court on August 26, Ham’s lawyer Michael Smith argued that the charges against Ham should be dismissed because MPI had failed to prove he owned any of the animals.

He also argued that Ham was neither the owner nor the person in charge of the animals due to his having leased the cows and farm to the Ushers.

Mr Smith said all the cattle leased by Ham bore national animal identification and tracing (Nait) tags, and because none of the animals which were found either dead or starving on the farm bore those tags, it couldn’t be proved any of the animals belonged to Ham. Judge Raoul Neave said there was no evidence to say definitely who owned the stock and the charges remained.

A big step forward E

ither of the two new Qashqai recently driven, (diesel TS and top of the range Ti) with their bold, very smart styling could certainly be substituted for the Volvo used as Nick’s (Ben Affleck) drive car in the decidedly chilling movie, Gone Girl!

In creating the first Qashqai models in 2006, history shows Nissan read the market perfectly.

For it turned out to be not only a hot seller in the UK, but Nissan’s best-selling model in Europe as well.

And here in NZ it clearly didn’t take long for us to get used to, or sort out the pronunciation of the Qashqai name, with some 4600 of the first model sold here.

So with these new Qashqai, Nissan has given them very smart, but not too radical styling and a comprehensive array of technology and standard gear.

They’re 5cm longer, 2cm wider and sit lower than before, and while sharing the family look with new X-Trail and Pathfinder, Qashqai is definitely the prettiest of the bunch!

I reckon it’ll likely sell on its looks alone!

Which rest-assured are matched with what lies within.

For underneath it shares the new, Nissan-Renault modular platform with the X-Trail and so benefits from its longer wheelbase.

Yet despite these size and standard equipment increases, the petrol versions are only slightly heavier.

There’s four models in the new range.

The three petrol versions all use the same 2 litre engine and sevenstep CVT auto.

They start with $35,990 ST, the mid-range ST-L is $39,990 and premium Ti is $43,990.

The ST has cloth trim, rear parking sensors, reverse camera, Bluetooth, LED running lights and sits on 17inch alloys.

All others have 19 inch alloys.

The ST-L has premium cloth trim and panoramic glass roof while the Ti adds leather furnishings, front seat heaters, sat/nav plus a huge array of other features.

Especially so in the safety and driver assist areas, including four exterior cameras for the excellent around-view monitor system.

The Ti can also park itself !

Then there’s the $42,990, 1.6litre turbo-diesel TS. It sits mid-range, equipment wise and includes idle stop/go, push-button start, privacy glass, dual-zone climate-air and more.

All of which help set off the extra cost of going diesel!

Both the TS and Ti driven had a fine, up-market feel to their cabins, thanks to nice design, soft-feel plastics and smart trim choices.

The cabins are a neat fusion of global cultures.

Meaning the controls are clearly marked and easy to use while the dials and central 7inch touchscreen for the infotainment system are pictures of modern clarity.

And in time, I appreciated the electric park brake.

Endearing features of the previous Qashqai are the comfort of the high placed front seats and the ease of getting into them.

So Nissan has ensured these aspects are even better than before with additional bolstering and support for the new seats.

And the driver’s seat is multiadjustable allowing the setting up of an ideal driving position – one I was very comfortable in after many hours behind the wheel!

In the back seats, the longer wheelbase means more leg-space and headroom resulting in two, standard size adults therein being comfortable and relaxed for the long haul.

Still no rear ventilation outlets though.

As well luggage space is increased to 430 litres with all seats up and 1585 litres with rear seats folded.

Plus you can stow small stuff, discreetly or so it won’t roll around below the false floor.

The tailgate also opens 230mm higher for easy loading.

First driven was the torquey, re-

sponsive, 1.6L turbo-diesel which as well as being strong from low revs really impresses with its smoothness and quietness.

OK it’s not quite as quick away from standstill as the petrol, but it soon makes up for this.

It’s a strong and effortless performer overall and, Nissan says, capable of averaging 4.9L/100km.

If lots of long distance touring and/or hill work is on the cards, for me this is the engine of choice.

Not that the 2 litre petrol engine is wanting, for it now has variablevalve timing and direct-injection and feels decidedly eager right through.

Economical too, with a stated 6.0L/100km overall.

Both engines work very well with the excellent “Xtronic” CVT which now acts more like a conventional auto.

While the diesel TS has more weight up front both proved to be nicely balanced and totally predictable around corners of all difficulties.

Which perhaps isn’t a surprise given the combination of the new suspension setup, complete with double-piston shockies, the wider track, grippy tyres and the array of driver-aid technologies.

As well, while the suspension has a sporty feel to it the ride is very comfortable, car-like and very easy to enjoy.

They’re quiet too with engine, wind and road noise kept well suppressed.

Homemade mince pie

■ Cut each pastry sheet into 4 equal squares and brush top of each with beaten egg. Put the squares on a tray, place in oven and bake for 5 minutes or until

■ Heat oil over moderate heat in a deep frying pan and add onion, carrot, lemon zest, garlic and rosemary. Fry gently, without browning, until the onion is soft.

Add mince, turn up the heat and fry, breaking up lumps as you go. Cook until mince is browned.

Mix in flour and tomato paste then add the beef stock. Simmer

for 10 minutes then add mixed vegetables.

■ Simmer for another 4 minutes, season to taste with salt and pepper and reheat pastry squares in oven. Serve mince in between pastry halves.

■ Serve with mashed potato and steamed carrot sticks.

Breakers all fired up

BY KRIS SHANNON With almost every Australian NBL team improving in the offseason, the competition could be the closest in years.

It’s a good thing, then, that the Breakers also appear a superior side to the one that endured a woeful last campaign.

Ahead of their opening game in Perth tomorrow, the once-formidable Breakers feel ready for another tilt at the title they used to own.

While the minimum expectation is the playoffs - no mean feat for a team coming off a secondbottom finish and an 11-17 record - there is belief that expectation can be exceeded.

It’ll be far from easy, after the league enjoyed an influx of top American college players, but the Breakers have the roster, the style and the motivation to mount another challenge for the championship.

There is one tangible reason, in particular, for renewed hope, and his name is Cedric Jackson.

The former league MVP returns to the North Shore not just with his own abundant talents but the ability to enhance the game in every team-mate around him.

General manager Richard Clarke reports the player the club have recruited is comparable to the one who guided the team to two titles in two seasons, but insists no individual will be under pressure to single-handedly right the ship.

“I don’t think he has to live up to any expectations other than his own,” Clarke said.

“He’s got high expectations of himself.

“He does all those things that make the team better. He’s been very vocal since he’s been back; he sets very high standards, pulling guys up on things that might have slipped last year.

“That’s a real plus and something that we really wanted from him - that leadership.”

Around Jackson, the Breakers have ameliorated the areas in which they were weak, particularly the big men positions.

With Alex Pledger battling injuries and Mika Vukona struggling with foul trouble, the two starters left a large void for a bench that failed to handle the load.

This season, with Ekene Ibekwe and Tai Wesley, the club is more robust in the 4- and 5-spots.

The pair give the Breakers size and strength down low, helping to seal what was a porous defence.

In addition to solidifying the defence, the Breakers’ new recruits - guard Rhys Carter among them - were targeted with an eye on increased speed, toughness and athleticism. They are qualities for which the Breakers were wellknown during Andrej Lemanis’ tenure, but also attributes his successor wished to emphasise.

“With the review with Dean [Vickerman] at the end of last year, we were able to identify what we thought hadn’t worked,” Clarke said.

“We thought we hadn’t really given Dean the opportunity to say, ‘this is what my team looks like’, and then recruit to that.”

The roster adjustments also

mean the Breakers will be able to throw different looks at opponents, according to Tom Abercrombie.

“We’re much more athletic than we were last year so hopefully we should be able to play a faster style and maintain that for a lot longer.

“It’s exciting there’s definitely some changes in personnel and playi n g style, and I think that we needed that.”

The league as a whole has been boosted by its import stocks, a flood of quality that Clarke credits to the Breakers’ biggest rivals.

The Breakers possess plenty of motivation to emerge triumphant. Seventeen losses stung a group of players so accustomed to success, and that pain should be sufficient to ensure last season is looked on as an aberration rather than the new normal.

“No one’s happy with how we finished last year and that still leaves a bit of a bad taste in your mouth,” Abercrombie said.

“That’s certainly motivation going into this year - to get back to playing how we know we can play and establish that toughness and that Breakers style we’re known for.”

The Formula One legend suffered serious head injuries following a skiing accident in France last December, which left him in a medically-induced coma. Ferdinand answers call Former England and QPR striker Les Ferdinand has answered his former club’s call and agreed to become head of football operations in a bid to help turn around the fortunes of the Premier League’s bottom club. The 47-year-old whose previous coaching experience was as assistant to Tim Sherwood at Spurs last season - will be involved with coaching all the different QPR teams and act as a gobetween on the footballing side between the coaching staff and the board of directors. Banned for racism UEFA has banned Italian Football Federation boss Carlo Tavecchio from its next congress and ordered him to hold an anti-racism event in punishment for widely condemned remarks. In a statement yesterday, European football’s governing body said its ethics division had decided to impose the penalty after wrapping up a probe launched in August. Thomson to turn out for Reds in 2014 The Queensland Reds have secured an important boost to their forward pack by signing former All Blacks back-rower and ex-pat Ashburtonian Adam Thomson for the 2015 Super Rugby season.

Capped 29 times for New Zealand, the rangy Thompson was a member of the All Blacks 2011 World Cup-winning squad before moving to play in Japan for the past two seasons.

A veteran of seven Super Rugby seasons as a key player

with the Highlanders, he is currently leading the try-scoring in the Japanese Top League while playing for Canon Eagles.

Coach Richard Graham said Thomson would provide experience to the pack and leadership for the young back-rowers in the squad, including up-andcomers Curtis Browning and Lolo Fakaosilea. At 196cm and 112kg, he is capable of playing all three back-row positions.

Smith beats heat for fine century

By GreG Buckle It was fitting that Steve Smith reached his maiden one-day century in Sharjah with Dean Jones, the scorer of one of Australian cricket’s most talkedabout hundreds, looking on.

Jones’ 210 in the tied Test against India in Chennai back in 1986 is an epic tale of courage and skill in conditions

that were life-threatening.

And while Smith’s 101 was hardly on the same scale, the 25-year-old was still moved to describe the Sharjah heat as “remarkable”.

Smith’s 101 off 118 balls provided the backbone of Australia’s 8-255 before Mitchell Johnson (3-24) and spinners Nathan Lyon (2-33) and Glenn Maxwell (2-29) ripped through

the Pakistanis for 162 all out.

Australia won the toss and Smith had come to the crease after Aaron Finch’s dismissal from the first ball of the series.

Battling temperatures in the high 30s, David Warner (43) and Smith added 86 for Australia’s second wicket before Warner became one of legspinner Shahid Afridi’s three victims.

Afridi (3-46) made the key breakthrough to remove an exhausted Smith caught at long off at 6-216.

Jones applauded loudly and generously when Smith reached his hundred and wondered aloud at how many kilograms the NSW right-hander may have lost during his innings in the energy-sapping heat.

Tander tips ‘motivated’ Luff

By Roje AdAimy Garth Tander hopes his new co-driver Warren Luff is still filthy about being dropped by Red Bull Racing for this year’s V8 Supercars endurance series.

Not because he likes to see him hurt, but because it could help their chances of a top finish in Sunday’s Bathurst 1000.

Luff drove with veteran Craig Lowndes at the frontrunning Holden outfit the past two endurance campaigns, scoring three podiums from four races last year to win the inaugural Enduro Cup. Despite their success, he was shown the door in December.

The move paved the way for Steve Richards, who defected to Red Bull from Ford Performance Racing after winning the 2013 Great Race with Mark Winterbottom.

All was not lost for Luff, though, with the 38-year-old picking up a seat alongside three-time Bathurst champion Tander at factory-backed rivals Holden Racing Team.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had someone new come and join me, but Luffy’s been

fantastic,” said Tander, who finished third with Luff at last month’s Sandown 500 ahead of Lowndes and Richards in fourth.

“He’s had a huge amount of experience, has got the runs on the board - that’s why we got him.

“The car will always come back; you don’t have to worry about him trying too hard for an audition to try and get a job.”

In fact, it could be the opposite.

While Luff has vowed to move on from losing his seat at Red Bull, Tander reckons the fire might still be burning inside.

“At he press conference at Sandown, one of the journos asked ‘Does it feel a little bit special to beat the car you were in last year?’“ Tander said.

“He was very non-committal, saying ‘Nah, nah, it didn’t mean anything, you want to beat everyone’.

“But I was saying ‘Come on mate, of course it does.

“That’s why I was keeping Lowndesy behind - I was doing it for you’.

“Maybe it does (still drive him).

“And if that means on Sunday, if we’ve got those Red Bull cars behind us and he finds a little extra five or 10 per cent just to keep them there, then it’ll work in our favour.” - AAP

Lauren eyes the future Mid Canterbury cyclist Lauren Ellis and her New Zealand team mates started their latest Oceania Championships campaign in Adelaide, Australia, yesterday.

Ellis will line up in the endurance events on the track in Adelaide, at an event which team coach Dayle Cheatley said was important in terms of qualifying for the next Olympics, although the team’s current focus was currently February’s world championships.

“The riders will all be training through this event. They are all at different levels but all have only just come back from a long break after Glasgow,” Cheatley said. “In fact most of our riders are in a big training phase right now. If we do not lay down a big base now, then they won’t perform in February.”

Focus on burnout Johnathan Thurston’s withdrawal from the Kangaroos’ squad for the Four Nations campaign has again turned the focus squarely onto the issue of NRL player burnout.

The North Queensland playmaker has withdrawn from coach Tim Sheens’ squad, due to a shoulder complaint. Thurston was one of nine incumbent Australian Test players unavailable for the sixweek series beginning later this month. Thurston comments come on top of confirmation from the Rugby League Players’ Association that the heavy workload on players continues to be one of their most pressing concerns.

PGA Tour set to start for Kiwi trio By dAniel RichARdson New Zealand will enjoy its biggest representation on the PGA Tour in more than a decade this season and the campaign gets underway in California tomorrow.

Tim Wilkinson, Danny Lee and Steven Alker are all confirmed starters for the seasonopening Frys.com Open at the Silverado Resort as part of a wide-open field that’s missing a collection of the game’s biggest names.

Lee and Wilkinson retained their tour cards after solid 2013-2014 seasons, while Alker graduated back to the game’s most lucrative circuit courtesy of a good year on the secondtier Web.com Tour in 2014 where he finished 10th on the money list.

The top 25 players earned PGA Tour cards.

The last time New Zealand had this sort of presence on the PGA Tour was in 2002 when Craig Perks, Frank Nobilo, Phil Tataurangi, Grant Waite and Michael Long all held full playing rights.

opening weeks of the new season as he needs to accumulate valuable FedEx Cup points before the first reshuffle of the priority order next month.

The priority order determines what players can start in each tournament.

That means the Phoenixbased professional, who last played on the PGA Tour in 2003 and prefers narrow layouts, may have to line up at courses that don’t suit his game.

“Steve’s been there and done that and at 43, he’s played a lot of golf courses,” Nobilo, now a Golf Channel analyst, told the New Zealand Herald.

“If you get off to a good start, you get re-ranked favourably and you get a better card and then you’re in more tournaments.

“Get off to a bad start and you get re-ranked poorly and then you’re really struggling.”

Lee and the left-handed Wilkinson are in different positions given they’re fully exempt courtesy of finishing inside the top 125 players in last season’s FedEx Cup. That means they can arrange their schedule around courses that set up nicely for them.

The 24-year-old Lee has always had potential but a lack of consistency proved costly last season as he struggled to put four good rounds together in the same week.

“A guy on a good day can beat just about anybody but how bad is your bad day,” Nobilo said.

“He got off to a couple of good starts but he had a habit of when he made one mistake, he’d make two or three.

three Kiwis on tour this season but it wouldn’t count for much if they couldn’t make an impact.

“You’d love to see New Zealanders contending and winning a tournament.

“I don’t care which one of them it is.

“It’d be great for another New Zealander to win over here; I think that’s the big thing to make more kids want to do it.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Economic Development Steven Joyce announced funding support of nearly $1 million a year for the next two NZ Open tournaments to focus on television production and distribution, estimated to reach about 200 million homes.

The tournament will receive $700,000 per annum through the Major Events Development Fund, with up to $250,000 per annum from the Government.

Event promoter Michael Hill Tournaments Ltd will contribute $250,000 to ensure the live broadcast goes out to a world-wide audience and help support wider commercial objectives.

Sam Burgess’ facial surgery has proved more complicated than expected and raised questions about him playing out the NRL grand final win over Canterbury with the injuries. Burgess suffered a fractured cheekbone and a fractured eye socket in a sickening head clash with James Graham in the first tackle of the game on Sunday at ANZ Stadium. But despite the NRL’s new stringent concussion laws introduced this season, Burgess wasn’t subject to a check on his injuries by the Rabbitohs medical staff.

Prost criticises F1 Organisers of Formula One’s Japanese Grand Prix have come under attack with former world champion Alain Prost weighing in to decry errors leading up to the crash that left French driver Jules Bianchi with a brain injury. Bianchi sustained the injury in a high-speed crash into a recovery vehicle which came onto the side of the track near the end of Sunday’s rain-hit race at Suzuka. Prost told Europe 1 radio the removal truck should never have been there.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club

On Sunday August 31 we held a very successful ceilidh at the Senior Centre.

The council are delighted with the increase in attendances at these functions.

We are always ever mindful of the talents and time which the entertainers give so freely.

Another very successful ceilidh was held on Sunday, October 5 at 2pm.

Our programme this time included the ever-popular Peter Ireland on the pipes, songs by Nakita Hydes, a very talented young songstress, and Ron Greygoose accompanied by Audry Richie.

Tiny five-year-old dancers Isobela Grieves and Tamati Graham captivated the audience.

Our other dancer was Erin McLean, a 12-year-old with great expertise on the highland dancing scene. She was a delight to behold.

We were privileged to have the great stalwart of the Scottish Society, and a life member, Davi Boyle play for us on his small pipes. His performance was very well received.

John Waugh led us in a sing-a-long with piano accompaniment by our own Rose Stead. (I am sure there will be numerous groups in town saying “our Rose”, as she is always available to many groups.)

Rose presented a lovely rendition of Remembrance as one of her items.

Chief Ken caused many chuckles with his Scottish jokes.

At only $5 a ticket, we encourage you to come and join us on these entertaining days.

Our AGM is to be held at the Senior Centre on the evening of Wednesday, October 29.

We welcome anyone interested to come along.

We encourage new members.

The night was very well attended with old members returning and visitors coming to enjoy another great night of music and laughter.

Lorraine welcomed us all and reminded us about the Christmas dinner in November.

She then passed the meeting over to Don Hopwood who had played us in with some lovely music. He proceeded to announce each artist as he arranged the evening for us.

Marg Twamley played the organ for us (I’m really fascinated watching the folks play this instrument, with two keyboard and foot pedals it’s really good to see).

Marg played Wish Me a Rainbow, Tumbling Down and Lovely Pieces. Next was Marj Buckley with her new keyboard.

It sounds like a piano with a keyboard bass.

She played a piece of music and asked the audience to tell her the name of the TV show it was from. A few guessed Peyton Place, a real old story that many had enjoyed. She also played Moon River among others.

Next was Lester on the piano playing some of Jimmy Shand’s Waltzes.

The raffles were then drawn; congratulations to George, Don, Rose, Marj, Jackie.

Bev French played Any Dream Will Do, which had the audience singing along.

Well done Bev, you can certainly tickle the ivories.

Elizabeth McCormick played a lovely medley on the keyboard.

A favourite of mine No Matter What They Told Me was beautiful.

Karen Smith played three delightful pieces.

To all these talented people a big thank you for another great night.

Ashburton Rose Group The Ashburton Rose Group enjoyed a lovely trip to the Leeston area for its September meeting.

Firstly we visited David Bell Daffodils.

We were able to pick a bit bunch of daffodils to take home.

June, our hostess from David Bell Daffodils, told us about the growing of daffodils and was able to answer our questions.

We then went to Jo Frees garden.

Jo welcomed us to her beautiful garden and we were able to sit outside and have lunch.

The garden was lovely, just coming to life after the winter, with blossom trees, rhodoes, hostas, winter roses and bulbs.

We all agreed that we would love to go back and visit the garden in November, when the roses are flowering.

We then went to Mill Bridge Rhododendrons, where Louise Harkness showed us her nursery and we were able to buy rhododendrons of all shapes and sizes and colours.

We then went into Leeston for a nice cup of coffee before heading home.

Ashburton County Scottish Society The objects of the Ashburton County Scottish Society is to preserve and cultivate the traditons, Scottish music, dance, songs and anything Scottish.

It is also the desire to wear the Highland costume.

The Scottish council meet monthly to do the business of the society, and organise our ceilidhs and yearly Burns Night, to celebrate the birth of our most famous bard, Robbie Burns.

We hold at least four ceilidhs a year. WE present an afternoon of music, song and dance, culminating in a time of fellowship over eats and a cuppa.

We are always amazed at the amount of talent in Ashburton.

At our Burns Night we meet for the for the traditional meal of “the haggis wi bashit neeps an’ champit tatties” (haggis, mashed turnip/swede and mashed potatoes), with a dessert to follow.

Before the dinner we have an appointed person who delivers a resounding and animated recital of Burn’s Address to the Haggis.

During the evening an invited person gives a passionate speech on the life of Robert Burns, followed by traditional Scottish environment.

Ashburton Golf Club Some wonderful golf played over the weekend on the course.

The Watson cup semi finalists are now sorted, and 2 very good games look to be on the cards. In the first game we have the dynamic duo of Dave Hewitt and Stu Dunlop, taking on the Laurel and Hardy pair of Pieter Van Volly and Paddy Bradford.

Stu and Dave will start as massive favourites and I can’t see the game getting passed the 13th.

The other semi promises to be a much tighter affair with the all in wrestling tag team of John Davis and Derek Shaw, locking horns with the ballroom dancing duet of Lefty May and Ken Clucas.

This game hangs on one man, which game will Ken bring? He is carrying a bit of form, and a couple of extra kilos, so I think the boys will waltz into the final.

Retirement seems to be treating the ex senior sergeant well, must be spending far too much time on the course, after shooting the lights out last week in the stableford round. Me thinks Mrs R needs to find him some more jobs round the house.

Also great to see Pete Pratt back in the winners circle, after some lean months.

Sunday we held the County Stroke on the Course, Tinwald won the Ladies trophy well led by Judith Smith, and Phil Lalor saw the Methven boys pick up the Mens, but a strong Ashburton team came 2nd in both grades so picked up the over all Mayors Trophy.

Big yee hah to Shaz, Nicky, Bev, Rhonda, Steve, Paddy, Bruce and Ken, well done to all.

This Sunday the course is closed for the Templar Trophy where Aorangi take on Canterbury, in Mens, Ladies, Masters and Juniors games, pop down to the course and see some wonderful golfers play on our course.

Allenton Croquet Club Members had their meeting earlier in the month.

The Sports club opening day was a washout which necessitated a change of plan.

However the weather for the for the croquet club open ing was lovely and we enjoyed being out with the visitors from Waireka and Methven clubs.

The Interprovincial tournament between Canterbury and South Canterbury,played in Ashburton was won by Canterbury.

Val Bell from the Rakaia club contemplates her next move at the Clubs New Zealand South Island Women’s Fours bowling tournament on Monday. The tournament is being played all this week at the MSA, Ashburton, Allenton and Methven greens.

The “Have a go’ day which we held at the end of September was spoilt by the weather—another really cold day but we did have a few hardy souls turn out.

We plan to hold another one at a later date — the weather will hopefully settle soon.

In the meantime if you would like to see Golf Croquet played and have a try, come to the greens at the Allenton Sports club, Cavendish Street on any Wednesday at 1.30pm..

Ashburton Senior Citizens Inc. The September meeting was held at the

Seniors Centre on Cameron Street at 1:30pm.

Arthur Berry opened the meeting and led the singing to all with recent birthdays. He then introduced to all present the President, Marion Trudgeon who has been unavailable for a considerable amount of time.

Yvonne Cherry introduced the afternoon’s entertainers who all came from Ashburton College.

Yvonne introduced the first entertainer who was Hannah Wakelin who had entered the Young Persons Performing Arts Competition in the U.S.A and did extremely well.

She gave a snippet of various selections she performed to easily win her grade in America. What a talented young lady she is.

Nick then told the audience about guitar and played beautifully.

Liam Kennedy who has just made a CD of his singing (soon to be released). He sang “The Rodeo”, “Tan Shoes and Pink Shoe Laces” and more.

He was followed by a group of College Boys Blues Band, who among other songs sang “A Horse with No Name”.

At the colleges Music competition Orange House came first with “I won’t give up” which was most enjoyable (Liam Kennedy was orange house’s lead singer!).

The performers and their teacher Steven must be congratulated for an entertaining musical afternoon.

After the performers were thanked and departed while afternoon tea was being organised there was a short session on joke telling.

Reminders: The Christmas Lunch will be held at the RSA on Wednesday 19th November. Cost will be $14.00 which may be paid at the Community House or at the next Socials.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday, September 25.

There was a reasonable attendance for our 69th birthday celebration. Apologies were received.

Hope McIntosh played the piano for us to sing the RSA song, followed by Happy Birthday for several members.

Sympathy was extended to anyone, who has lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery. Those members who helped with Meals on Wheels were thanked.

Bus trip in February: The president asked members to nominate where they would like to go, with suggestion to be with her

by November. Colleen will then work out an itinerary.

On a show of hands it was decided to play housie twice a year.

Joy was thanked for icing and donating a birthday cake. A card was received from the Waihi Women’s Section. They sent their sympathy regarding the tragedy at the Ashburton WINZ office.

There is a chance to change to one competition item, for next month, from a wedding photo to a dressed doll.

There are RSA carry bags for sale to commemorate 100 years since Gallipoli, at a cost of $6.

Sarah Heney was introduced, and sang some lovely songs. She also explained something of her musical background, being introduced to music when very young. Sarah’s programme was much appreciated by everyone.

The birthday cake was cut by patron Ella Ferris and long serving member Ann Rennie. Joy said grace before afternoon tea was served.

Raffles were one by Judy Peck and Adele Campbell.

Tinwald Garden Club On a sunny September day, 30 members of the Tinwald Garden Club left Ashburton on a mystery bus trip.

The first port of call was to a newly established restaurant on the way to the Christchurch airport, just off Highway 73, called DineDevine.

After a lovely cuppa and scones with jam and cream, we boarded our bus again and travelled to Rangiora.

We visited a very nice sub-division and were met by one of the residents.

There are 92 homes in the Northbrook Villas, and our hostess, Betty, took us to view her beautiful garden, where we were able to purchase plants that Betty propagates and sells to raise funds for the Rangiora hospital.

On to lunch at Artisan, a four year old building run by the Rangiora bakery.

Some members took advantage of the chance to purchase delicious goodies for their tea.

Well satisfied, we journeyed on to Helen Taylor’s garden, where we were amazed to see what can be done with a small townhouse section.

Back in the bus we travelled on to Behind the Hedge Garden Company, where many purchases were made from a large selection of perennials, bulbs and alpines.

On the journey home, Josh, our very tolerant bus driver, was persuaded to call in to Odering’s Nursery, and now, with the bus well loaded with plants, we finally set off for home, arriving at 6pm after a wonderful day out.

Adore Me to miss clash of titans?

The New Zealand Trotting Cup ride is about to get very interesting.

Tomorrow night, for the first time this season and in fact that first time ever, three genuine champions of harness racing will lock horns.

Terror To Love, Christen Me and Adore Me. Enough said, right?

Three bona fide superstars of

the sport, three potential winners of our greatest race and three horses who will make this year’s edition of the great into the spectacle it is.

Or will they?

I’m not convinced, like others within the industry that Adore Me will be there come November 11.

She’s a five-year-old mare with very little to prove, and can race for ridiculous money over the next 12 months on both sides of

the Tasman without having to race freaks like Terror To Love and Christen Me. Of course I’ll probably be made out to be a mug when she comes out and smashes them in the Canterbury Classic - but that’s just my opinion.

Mark Purdon, who is her cotrainer, is a smart operator. He’s too clever to risk a whole lot on one race when the makeup of said one race can be achieved - in an easier fashion - another way.

Terror To Love and Christen Me will be there though.

And what a rivalry that promises to be again.

But if we learnt one thing from last year when we were faced with a similar scenario – don’t put too much emphasis on what happens now.

These horses are being primed to win a New Zealand Trotting Cup, not a Canterbury Classic, Methven Cup or Ashburton Flying Stakes.

Their sole purpose is to be the best they can be on the second Tuesday in November.

And if that means losing a race now, to be better come the 11th, then you’ll find no trainer who will argue.

A new addition to this column this week - the local tip. A local horse with a good chance over the weekend.

In a muscular, committed display, the Steelers regained the Dan Bryant Memorial Trophy for the first time since 2008, when former Manu Samoa No 8 Tanner Vili’s heroics helped sink their big brothers from up the motorway 41-18.

than 8000 got into it and ramped up the atmosphere as the Steelers ran in six tries.

Local TMO Glen Blackwell was called on at least four times, earning his corn.

Auckland did some harebrained things, including turning down several kickable shots at goal and trying to pass the ball out of their own in-goal.

They also lost No 8 Peter Saili and wing George Moala to what looked to be serious injuries.

That helped push the final whistle out to after 9.30pm.

what they did. The second half try to No 10 Ahsee Tuala, waltzing through some non-existent defence, summed up the respective sides on the night.

The presence of Williams galvanised the crowd, one wag constantly chanting his name soon after kickoff, when he was safely tucked up on the subs’ bench!

However, the individual highlight of the night was NanaiWilliams’ pass to Andy Muirhead, a behind the back special.

Auckland now face Northland on Saturday and the Steelers play Tasman in Blenheim on Sunday.
