Big Mac getting pricey The price of a Big Mac has had its sharpest increases in the past 20 years over the last year. The McDonald’s burger became about 12 per cent more expensive over the past year. According to Economist magazine’s Big Mac Index, the price of a Big Mac across New Zealand McDonald’s outlets last year was an average $5.20. Yesterday, they were selling for $5.80 at Grey Lynn and Wairau Rd in Auckland and in Hamilton’s Grey St, and $5.90 in central Whangarei. The high price of beef is getting the blame. Export beef prices are at record levels as international demand grows. Drought has reduced US production to its lowest rate since the early 1970s. That has already been signalled as a possible pressure on supermarket prices leading into Christmas and McDonald’s said it was something that could affect its prices, too. A spokeswoman said the price of beef had risen 20 per cent in the past year. She said McDonald’s reviewed and adjusted its prices throughout the year.

Mr Borrows recently donated live chickens to children at Ramanui School in Hawera, as well as young people at Youth Justice residences in Palmerston North and Christchurch. “I’ve been doing it for a while now,” said Mr Borrows, who buys the chickens from a local breeder. “I just think that chickens are great for kids and young people to look after. They respond very quickly to being well treated.”

Google exec breaks sky jump world record Google vice-president Alan Eustace has jumped from an altitude of 41,150 metres to break the world record set two years ago by Austria’s Felix Baumgartner. At the weekend, the 57-year-old went up in a helium balloon over the New Mexico desert and did a free-fall skydive at a maximum speed of 1322km/h while breaking the sound barrier and at the same time beating Baumgartner’s speed record. The Google executive wore a pressurised suit like astronauts wear, especially designed to withstand extreme altitudes and speeds such as those he braved during the free fall before opening his parachute.

Eustace, who took two hours in the balloon to reach the 41,150 metres, made the descent in just 15 minutes.

Malaysian diplomat remanded

BY REBECCA QUILLIAM The former Malaysian defence attache who left the country while facing criminal charges five months ago has been remanded in custody following a court appearance on Saturday.

Muhammad Rizalman, 38, made a brief appearance in front of Justice of the Peace Hewitt Humphrey in the Wellington District Court.

He has been accused of burglary and assault with intent to rape Tania Billingsley at her Wellington home on May 9.

Following Rizalman’s arrest on May 10, New Zealand asked Malaysia to waive diplomatic immunity but on May 22 he left the country after a mix-up between officials.

After a successful extradition process, Rizalman arrived in Auckland overnight and flew to Wellington on Saturday where he travelled directly to the District Court.

He stood quietly in the dock during the proceedings that lasted only a few moments.

Mr Humphrey remanded Rizalman in custody and cancelled an arrest warrant that had been issued on May 30.

A tidy-looking Rizalman was wearing a brown leather jacket with a blue striped shirt.

The Malaysian Foreign Affairs Ministry said Rizalman was accompanied to the country by two New Zealand police officers and two Malaysian armed forces personnel.

Rizalman was a former defence staff assistant at the High Commission of Malaysia.

An Ashburton man and his daughter had a lucky escape after their house was engulfed in flames on Friday night.

The house Eric Johnston had rented for more than 12 years was gutted by the blaze, which began shortly before midnight.

Ashburton fire risk management officer Murray Cairns believed the fire began in an outside light fitting, but he was still investigating what caused the blaze.

Mr Johnston said he had fallen asleep in his chair, and later woke to thumping sounds coming from the roof.

“There was some thumping in the roof, I just thought it was a rat in the roof,” he said.

He soon realised it was something more serious when he saw ash falling from a light outside, and he yelled for his daughter Shania,15, to get out of the house.

Fire appliances from as far afield as Rakaia attended the scene, while appliances from

Geraldine were called to Ashburton on standby.

Mr Johnston, who did not have contents insurance, had time to grab a few possessions before leaving his home, but many of his prized possessions were destroyed in the blaze.

“All of my books and sporting trophies, they’re gone,” he said.

Mr Johnston also questioned the usefulness of the house’s smoke alarms, which were in working order, as the fire service was already at the scene

before the alarms went off.

“People should look at putting fire detectors in their roofs, because the whole house was nearly engulfed before the alarms went off,” he said.

Mr Johnston was philosophical about the fire, and said he was grateful he and his daughter got out safely.

“At least it wasn’t because I was lying there with a cigarette, or cooking while I was drunk. It was just one of those electrical faults that happen,” he said.

Bouncy castle incident A man suffered a serious neck injury after falling while playing on a bouncy castle yesterday.

Tauranga’s Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to Waihi Beach after the incident about 3pm. “A 45-year-old male was playing on a bouncy castle and fell resulting in a serious neck injury,” the rescue service said. The helicopter met St John ambulance paramedics at the scene. The man was then flown to Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital for further treatment.

There were cowboy hats, boots, and sunburnt faces aplenty at an action-packed Methven Rodeo yesterday.

Despite the predicted wet and windy weather, the rain held off for the event, which saw thousands of spectators turn out to watch the action unfold.

There were over 300 entries from around the country for the popular event, which is in its 45th year.

Springston cowboy Jimmy Booth was looking for a repeat

performance after taking out the Open Bull ride title last year, and he was optimistic despite a fall at Saturday’s Winchester Rodeo.

“I managed to win last year, and I fell off at Winchester last year too, so I could be alright,” he said.

Mr Booth said he always competed at Methven, and it always had one of the biggest crowds.

Local hope Tom Plunkett had a rough day at the office, hitting the ground hard after falling during the Open Bare-

back event. Cowboys and cowgirls travelled to Methven from around the country, with Cam Wenn making the trip from Ohakune.

Despite nearly dislocating his shoulder in the Open Saddle Bronc event, Mr Wenn said he loved competing in the Methven event, which he had attended for the past five years.

“I love it, there’s a good crowd, good people,” he said.

The large crowd were also well behaved, according to Timaru Police Sergeant Grant Lord.

“Today’s been pretty good, we’ve just had to remove a couple for being a bit silly,” he said.

Staff from the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service were also on hand, giving out free bottled water and helping those who had over indulged.

Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service general manager Chris Clark said her staff had only dealt with “a couple” of people, despite concerns about underage drinkers.

“It gets better each year,” she said.

A driver speeding at 150km/h dropped a hitch-hiker off on the side of the road before continuing to flee police until his car caught fire. Sergeant Steve Dawson said police pursued the vehicle after attempting to stop it for speeding near Opua, Northland, on Saturday.

The car pulled over to the side of the road and a hitch-hiker got out.

The driver then continued on at speeds up to 150km/h. The pursuit ended about 4.45pm on Paihia Rd near Opua when the vehicle caught fire and drove off the road in to scrub. The driver fled the scene on foot. Mr Dawson said the driver was not apprehended at the scene, but was later found by police. He was expected to appear in court today.

Planting to celebrate domain’s 150 years

By Stu Oldham A young tree planted before a modest crowd commemorated the founding of an ambitious public space that has had a marked influence over 150 years.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay and council open spaces manager David Askin yesterday planted a Persian Ironwood tree to mark the 150th anniversary of the Ashburton Domain.

The tree was planted near the children’s paddling pool and play area in tribute, in part, to the childhood memories created at the domain enjoyed by countless generations.

Mr Askin told the group of about 20 people, including many of the sculptors taking part in the nearby stone carving symposium, that the domain was one

of the four oldest in the country.

The Dunedin and Christchurch gardens turned 150 last year and the next oldest was in either Ashburton or Timaru, Mr Askin said.

The domain was central to recreational, family and sporting life in Ashburton.

By way of example, Mr Askin wondered how many generations of families had played on the rocking horse at the playground nearby.

He paid tribute to the first domain board and then the many borough and then district council staff who worked to improve the domain since the late 1880s.

Mr McKay said the town had the beautiful domain thanks to the foresight and generosity of its forebears, who set aside 37.5 hectares for the enjoyment

of the district. Since then, only 10 people - including Mr Askin - have had the privilege of being in charge of the domain and only once has any of the land been sliced off, in 1879-1880, to build Ashburton Hospital.

“I believe that just as the hospital cares for the health needs of our community, so do these gardens and facilities that make up the domain we have today,” Mr McKay said.

“This place is a treasure and it is up to future gnerations to keep it safe.”

The planting coincided with the Grigg family celebrating 150 years in the district, at commemorations across town.

John Grigg was a member of the Domain Board committee when it was formed.

Stone art For the next two weeks Ashburton’s Domain will serve as a working art space, with the Ashburton Stone Carving Symposium getting under way yesterday.

The symposium involves 11 local and international stone carvers, who will be working on their creations in the domain for the next two weeks as part of celebrations for the domain’s 150th anniversary.

Symposium organiser Brent Holley said the majority of carvers would be working with Mt Somers limestone, although some were using blue stone or granite.

The finished pieces will be auctioned off at a family day at the end of the symposium.

One hundred and fifty years after he first arrived at Longbeach, John Grigg’s descendants came together to celebrate the special anniversary.

The celebrations included tours of the estate, a family dinner and dance, and the unveiling of a memorial plaque.

The original Longbeach estate, now downsized considerably, has remained in the hands of the Grigg family.

Mr Grigg’s great-great granddaughter Tessa Grigg said people from as far afield as America and the United Kingdom attended the celebrations.

A special service was also held yesterday at the family chapel, which was brought down from Christchurch in 1873.

“It was a beautiful service. We sang so heartily the roof was shaking,” Mrs Grigg said.

Motorists are being warned to take extra care and be patient on the roads today with poor weather predicted for Labour Day. The holiday weekend road toll stood at two last night, unchanged from Saturday night and relatively low compared to previous Labour Weekends. However, it is higher than last year’s 30-year record low death toll of one.

A 75-year-old Tokoroa woman died on Saturday when her car crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a truck on State Highway 1 at Lichfield.

It followed the death of Keith Davies, 54, in a crash at Dairy Flat, north of Auckland, less than an hour after the start of the official holiday period.

He was a passenger in car that collided with a truck at the corner of Horseshoe Bush Road and Dairy Flat Highway around 4.30pm on Friday. His teenage son Richard was at the wheel.

National road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths said while both crashes involved cars crossing the centre-line, it was too early to say what caused the crashes.

“One looks like an inexperienced driver and the other doesn’t seem to have any explanation at this point,” he said.

“They don’t have anything in common other than the fact that a vehicle has crossed the centre-line. We don’t know the exact cause of either yet.”

Roads around the country are expected to be heavy with traffic today, with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) predicting 3000 more cars on the toll road north of Auckland than

normal. And with heavy rain and wind predicted for most of the North Island motorists are being warned to take care.

“We want people to really pay attention to their following distance. We often talk about the two second rule, if the road’s wet and traffic’s heavy you want to be giving at least four seconds between yourself and the vehicle in front,” Mr Griffiths said.

“Keep the speeds down, make sure you’re resting frequently, and if you’re a slower driver and traffic’s starting to build up behind, pull over and let people go past. We don’t want impatient motorists flying past lines of traffic in a rage, because they feel like they’ve been held up, and then putting other people at risk.”

He also advised drivers to turn their headlights on in poor weather to make sure they are visible to other vehicles.

“There’s a lot of cars out there that are grey and dark coloured, the colour of a wet road, so you’ve got to maximise the chances that other people see you, particularly at intersections.”

“And think twice before deciding to overtake, we have too many crashes involving vehicles crossing the centre-line, some of it’s a loss of control but some of it is poor decisions about when to overtake. So I just urge people to chill out and relax during the drive home. Impatience is a real killer.”

In other incidents at the weekend, a 78-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries when she was struck by a ute in central Dunedin yesterday, and a driver was arrested in Northland following a bizarre police chase which ended in the car in flames near Opua.

Three teens fight for life Three teenagers are fighting for their lives after a fellow student shot each in the head, as it emerged that a staff member attempted to stop the attack at a US high school.

Two girls, 14, and a boy, 15, were in critical condition in the hospital after Saturday’s bloodshed in the northwestern state of Washington that also left one student and the young shooter dead in yet another US school attack.

Another boy, 14, was in a serious condition after he was shot in the jaw. Both male students were reportedly cousins of Jaylen Fryberg, a popular first-year student at the Marysville-Pilchuck High School who opened fire in the school cafeteria.

Joanne Roberts, a doctor at Providence Regional Medical Centre in the city of Everett, 50km north of Seattle, said the girls had undergone surgery for head wounds.

“The next three days are go-

ing to be crucial,” Roberts said, explaining the surgery aimed to relieve brain swelling.

Student Eric Cervantes told KIRO-TV that a staff member intercepted Fryberg - who shot himself in the neck during a brief tussle. The bullet killed Fryberg but it was unclear if it was intentional.

Snohomish County Sheriff ’s Office said detectives “were able to confirm that a cafeteria worker attempted to stop the shooter”, while local media said the employee was a teacher.

“There’s all these heroes in this type of a thing, even though it’s a horrendous tragedy,” Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring said.

Police are attempting to ascertain a motive. The student that died was a girl, though authorities did not immediately release her name.

weekend of milestones reminds us of how fortunate we are to live in a region that is made what it is by determined doers.

Yesterday, a small group watched as a tree was planted at the Ashburton Domain to commemorate the long-lived patch of public space’s 150th birthday.

Those there heard how the domain came into being because some forward-thinking settlers – still grappling with things such as sewage and running water – decided their town needed a green space for all to use.

The domain board set about devising a place whose prime utility was as a space for uncomplicated relaxation and enjoyment. And, when it ran out of money, the lets-give-it-a-go ratepayers took over.

Among the first members of the domain board was John Grigg, the district’s founding farmer. If domain proponents were men of foresight, then Grigg was a man of far reaching action. Grigg’s farm at Longbeach – an impenetrable swamp made profitable – proved the district’s potential well before Ashburton became the grain bowl of New Zealand. With successive settlers, he showed what determination could do for Mid Canterbury.

As many looked to the past this weekend, Mid Canterbury’s rugby team displayed the sort of determination that makes a province proud.

At the start of the season, this column paid tribute to the Hammers’ management team for their part in molding an outfit that deserved to win the Heartland Championship.

Then, my unfortunate ability to curse teams with praise kicked into gear and the Hammers had a tough task ahead to make the final four. A mid-season defeat against Buller (my former home team) might easily have affected the Hammers’ approach before the final in Westport. But if it did, the Hammers turned defeat into the one lesson the Hammers needed to know to win.

On Friday, storied former Crusaders and Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said he would have told his players to think about how they would feel if they had to explain their defeat to their supporters on Monday.

Today, the Hammers are home with the Meads Cup – and no need for excuses.

ow that the official opening of the 51st Parliament is over and I have been once again sworn in as the MP for Selwyn, I am looking forward to getting back to the business of being a local MP, as well as settling into my roles as the Minister of Justice, Minister for Courts, Minister of Broadcasting and Minister for Communications.

The reason I put myself forward to be an MP was because I want our country to be a great place for my children to grow up, live and eventually work in. For this reason it is encouraging to see figures of 1600 people coming off welfare and entering the workforce each week, which indicates to me that we are on the right track.

It is particularly pleasing to see that Canterbury is one of two regions (along with Auckland) which have seen the greatest reductions in the number of people receiving Jobseeker Support over the past year.

This can in part be attributed to the buoyant local economies and number of job opportunities available, but is also a result of the Government’s approach to assisting people to move from a benefit into work.

Last month there were 10,000 fewer people on welfare nationwide than were on welfare in September 2013. Sole parents have been leading the reduction in working age people receiving a benefit, with an annual drop of 7110 or 8.9 per cent of people in this category.

Within this group, the largest decrease has been amongst sole parents aged from 18 to 24 years.

The Government has identified that sole parents, particularly those who go on a benefit in their teens, have historically had the highest lifetime costs of any group in welfare and have been more likely to remain on a benefit for the longest.

Solo parents have been leading the reduction in working age people receiving on a benefit.

we have provided millions of dollars of targeted support and childcare assistance to sole parents to help them train and study for a qualification so that working while raising children is achievable.

Strategies which are part of the ongoing plan to assist more people to move from benefits into work include: Offering incentive payments for beneficiaries who stay in work for a set period of time;

Offering more flexible childcare support such as paying a family member to help, or facilitating out-of-school-care, or extended hours in early childhood education; Making first-time Work and Income assessments more comprehensive so people are directed to the right sort of support from the start; Expanding the Youth Service to all teen parents and many 18 and 19-year-olds, and placing

a similar focus on supporting those aged between 20 and 24; and Expanding the successful $3k to Christchurch scheme to other regions where workers are needed.

Investment in such strategies will pay off for generations to come as it helps to reduce the risk of the children of beneficiaries being trapped in a life of welfare dependency with limited choices.

In most corners of the world, an Ashburton person can be found. So the Guardian’s Erin Tasker decided to track some of them down. This week it’s Amber Stratford who loves living a life less ordinary, and is currently doing so in Canada.

Loving Canadian life A

mber Stratford lives on top of a mountain, just a stone’s throw away from skifields and the ocean.

Amber lives just outside of Vancouver in British Colombia, Canada, and she loves it.

She loves being taken out of her comfort zone and living in North America has provided plenty of opportunities to do just that.

“Right now it is autumn here in Canada and it is absolutely stunning, I was surprised how hot the summer actually got here.

“I don’t have a worst part about living where I do, I live on top of a mountain, so I get the most amazing view.

I’m close to the skifields and also to the ocean, plus I live 25 minutes away from the American border, so everything is in extremely close range.

“I’m excited to be celebrating the North American holidays too like Halloween and Thanksgiving, both are very big over here and we’ll be doing everything in true Canadian style.”

Being so close to America means there’s plenty of opportunities to travel, and Amber’s making the most of it.

“I travel a lot on the side, so every few weekends I drive to Washington in the US and go hiking. They have surreal scenery there and it reminds me a lot of New Zealand, or I will hike within British Columbia, but I do anything outdoors basically.

“Lately I have been travelling more within America than I have in Canada. I was also doing a bit of wakeboarding in the summer and as winter is approaching will be getting back into snowboarding.”

Recently she went to Las Vegas and Arizona for her 24th birthday and went skydiving.

“That was the best experience to date and I’ll be heading to Los Angeles in a few weeks’ time for a mini break away.

“Pretty much anything that challenges me or takes me out of my comfort zone, you’ll find me doing it.”

with Amber Stratford in Canada The NHL ice hockey season has just started back up in North America so she’s hoping to get to a game shortly.

“They are insane about it over here, as much as we are about our rugby.”

Amber headed to Canada seeking a job as an au pair.

“I was originally waitressing in a mountain lodge in the Rocky Mountains temporarily while I was looking for an au pair job, but was lucky enough to find one pretty quickly,” she said.

“The working life is really good, Canadians are very friendly people so it makes the transition to a new country a lot easier.”

Amber has spent little time in New Zealand in the past five years.

“I have been travelling since I was 19, with a three-year stint on the Gold Coast in between.

“Previous to that I was a beauty therapist on the Jewel of the Seas Royal Caribbean cruise ship, so I have always had the travel bug and wanted to get out there and see what the world has to offer.

Amber Stratford is looking forward to celebrating North American holidays like Halloween in Canada.

“I think life experience is important and people need to get out of their comfort zone more and do things that challenge them mentally and physically.

The typical stay in one town for years and years on end doing the same thing day in day out just doesn’t cut it for me, I prefer the adventurous never know what’s going to happen next lifestyle.”

She’s a single girl and likes it that way. “I am single right now and have been for some time. I have so much to do and see in my life that I definitely won’t be settling down any time soon.

Maybe when I’m 30, but in the

meantime I will be doing my own thing, the right person will come along at the right time.”

Amber’s parents still live in Ashburton and her brother in Christchurch.

“I’m sure they think I have somewhat of a spontaneous personality, I know my friends sure think so, and you just never know what I’m going to be up to next.”

She doesn’t see herself back in New Zealand for a couple of years, but she does miss it.

“I do miss the Kiwis - I think they are the friendliest nation I have come across in the world and am proud to call myself

one, and everyone loves the accent here in Canada.”

She’s hoping to venture to the Canadian province of Ontario in the next couple of months and travel around Quebec and the East Coast of America.

Drain off any excess fat.

Add oil to the frying pan and cook onion for 5 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add beef back to the frying pan.

Add 1 1/2 cans of tomatoes with oregano and sugar and simmer the beef mixture for 20 minutes.

To make the white sauce: Heat butter in a small pan. When it is foaming, stir in flour and cook mixture for 1 minute.

Add milk gradually, stirring all the time to avoid lumps forming, then cook the sauce for 2 min-

utes, still stirring it continuously.

Remove pan from the heat and season the sauce to taste. Cover pan with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming on the sauce and set it aside.

To assemble the cannelloni: Spread the remaining tomatoes over the base of a large baking dish.

Spoon the beef mixture into the cannelloni tubes using a teaspoon and place the tubes on top of the sauce. Pour over white sauce and sprinkle over the Parmesan.

Cook the cannelloni in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the pasta is tender and the topping is golden. Serve with steamed broccoli.

In front of 21,000 fervent fans on a wonderful night for provincial rugby, Taranaki applied the fitting finale to their fairytale ITM Cup campaign. Taranaki’s narrow 36-43 victory over Tasman at Yarrow Stadium on Saturday night ended the Makos’ own dreams, but this was an occasion all about the victors. “We’re absolutely over the moon,” said flanker Mitchell Crosswell. “To do it in front of a home crowd was just fantastic.

Mid Canterbury are Meads Cup champions again after a comprehensive 36-13 hammering of Buller in Westport on Saturday.

Buller’s fairy-tale finish wasn’t to be as a committed and clinical Mid Canterbury took it to them in front of a packed Victoria Square crowd, spoiling the party in emphatic fashion.

“The perfect example of having peaked the boys at the right time,” Mid Canterbury coach Glenn Moore said.

“To win a final by that much speaks volumes for the group.”

Mid Canterbury dominated the opening half but unlike the round robin loss to Buller, they were able to make it count on the scoreboard.

Murray Williams was the orchestrator, laying on three first half tries as he directed traffic and dictated the tempo.

“Murray was outstanding.

“Threatened the line and his experience in all aspects of the game shone through.”

His opposite, James Lash was heavily responsible for getting Buller to the final, but after getting crunched by Tevita Ula early on he proceeded to come up with uncharacteristic errors.

The Hammers’ first two tries had Williams kick in behind Buller twice for a flying Seta Koroitamana to score a first half brace as the coaching staff ’s analysis was spot on.

“We identified through the week after many hours of watching footage that they had a lot of space at the back,” Moore

said. “We wanted to go one way, bring it back and then grubber in behind them. We went there twice and scored two tries.”

The third try had Williams find Peni Manumanuniwila charging on the angle for the centre to crash over and a second Williams’s penalty made it 23-6 at halftime.

Buller had been battered by the Mid Canterbury defence but kept on coming, and finally found a way through when prop Jerome Vaai scored from a lineout drive, with the Lash conversion narrowing the gap to 13.

Any chance of a comeback was dashed when the Hammers opened up Brenton Connell down the flank to sprint away and around under the posts.

claimed the 20 point advantage and a fourth penalty before full time rubbed salt in the Buller wound.

The Hammers’ defence was smothering. After the bonejarring hit on Lash, Ula found himself crushed at the bottom of a ruck, but after struggling to his feet the flanker shook it off and went on to produce some more big defence.

Fellow flanker Gary Redmond was the star of the defence with a huge tackle count, and he applied plenty of pressure on Buller’s inside combinations.

“I thought the loose forward trio was really good.

“Redmond is the best player in the competition and Tevita is a real competitor. You would go to war with him every day.

“We were really hungry and had a desire to defend.

“We are a smaller pack but showed lots of ticker.”

Moore wasn’t just talking about the final, with the side building towards Saturday’s result since that loss to Buller a month earlier.

Following that loss to Buller, the Hammers were languishing in seventh but picked themselves up to win five on the trot.

Buller, the little union that could, had won nine-in-a-row only to lose the one that mattered to an inspired Hammers effort.

Coach bows out in fine style

Strong finish for Fox Auckland’s Ryan Fox has produced a handy five-under 67 during the final round of the Perth International tournament to claim a share of ninth place at 10-under. The cash-rich event, co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the European Tour, was won by Danish golfer Thorbjorn Olesen who finished the week at -17 after he carded a one-under 71 during the last round yesterday. Fox was the best of the Kiwis in the field, while Nick Gillespie finished in a tie for 23rd at six-under and Michael Long ended up in a share of 65th spot at three-over.

Glenn Moore and Grant Keenan

Mid Canterbury wanted to send coach Glenn Moore out on a winning note and they did it in style.

The 36-13 win over Buller in Westport means Moore leaves Mid Canterbury with the impressive record of two Meads Cup wins from his two seasons in charge.

The man known as Growler is off to the Blues and will be successes by his assistant, Grant Keenan.

“I’m sure Grant and the other boys in the setup will grab hold of it and do a damn good job.”

Keenan will have some pressure on him coming in after Moore’s two years in charge have seen the Hanan Shield take up residence in Ashburton,

a maiden Meads Cup victory, a Ranfurly Shield challenge and then a second Meads Cup win.

With plenty of highlights in his “special two years”, Moore rated Saturday’s win the best.

“I think winning this one.

“It’s hard to say, we weren’t in a great place before last year.

“To win one and get through that barrier - having been there but not won anything for 15 years – we had to get through that.

“Then to front up this year and give a good account of ourselves against two first division sides, beating Southland and a good performance against Counties, we lost our way a little bit in the middle of the season with some injuries.

“But this one’s special because with four weeks to go we

were sitting in seventh needing to win with bonus points just to make the top four.

“The character and desire that come through was exceptional.”

They were exceptional to the tune of a 23-point win over a previously unbeaten team.

Captain Jon Dampney spoke of what it meant to win it before being handed the cup by its namesake, Sir Colin Meads.

“It’s an awesome feeling to do it two years in a row,” Dampney said.

“To Growler [Moore], you’ve brought a lot of belief back to this team and made us believe in ourselves.

“You deserve this.

“This one was for you and we wish you all the best with the Blues.”

In brief Breakers barely hang on The Breakers would have found little appealing about their afternoon’s work in Wollongong yesterday aside from a rather attractive result. After consecutive defeats dropped the Kiwi club back to an even record, the Breakers responded by barely closing out an unconvincing victory at the WIN Entertainment Centre. Currie blitzes own course Braden Currie and Dougal Allan on the mountain bike stage of the Red Bull Defiance adventure race around Wanaka on Saturday.

After two brutal days, racing 153km over some of most gruelling terrain Wanaka has to offer, it was the local pairing of Braden Currie and Dougal Allan that took the honours of the inaugural Red Bull Defiance multisport race on Saturday.

Currie, who designed the course, and Allan blitzed the

field with runners-up, Australian Team Peak Adventure, 34 minutes behind as the Wanaka based pair came home in 12.58:34.

Currie’s race saw competitors traverse eight high country stations combining the core elements of running, mountain biking and kayaking, mixing in special stages of tar-

get shooting and abseiling.

The pressure was on the twotime Coast to Coast winner to take out his own race when the second day of Defiance had the 80 strong field start in pristine conditions on the early morning sprint into Wanaka for the first transition into kayak.

There were three teams that broke free of the field in the

paddle down the Clutha River, but it was Currie and Allan that took the lead into the clay bird shooting stage.

They continued to lead the pack on the 28km mountain bike up the Pisa Range, and never looked back as they conquered the 25km run into home over Mount Alpha and Roys Peak.

Careful planning vital in Kiwis league upset

By Michael Burgess For Shaun Johnson, the seeds of Saturday’s night success were sown in a Brisbane hotel room.

The Kiwis arrived in the Queensland capital on Monday, with Johnson and Kieran Foran sharing a room on the seventh floor of their inner city hotel.

The halves combination spent a lot of time in their

chambers, as touring sports teams tend to do, and realised they had both decided enough was enough – they were fed up with being second best to the Australians.

“It’s been a really good week for me and Foz (Foran),” said Johnson.

“We were room mates and we spoke about it [a lot]; every second we got we would remind each other that we are

sick of losing. We just wanted to beat them.”

Foran had never tasted victory in a transtasman match, while Johnson had experienced only defeat from four attempts.

But they felt something was building.

Coming into this campaign, the resolve was clear; no more ‘if onlys’; no more ‘what ifs’.

Payne, Rawiller outed Jockey Michelle Payne will appeal a 20-meeting suspension for her winning ride on Prince Of Penzance in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. All Stars storm looms

By Matt MarkhaM A blue and silver stars storm looks set to hit Ashburton today.

And there is every conceivable possibility that come the end of play that Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen could walk away from Ashburton’s premier race day with an impressive haul of winners.

All totalled the Rolleston stable will bring 15 horses to the meeting and each one is a realistic chance of winning their respective races.

The Purdon/Rasmussen charge is led up by Hands Christian and Adore Me who will contest today’s feature race – the Ashburton Flying Stakes.

Both horses a well backed in the market for next month’s New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington but will need to produce stellar performances today to justify anyone giving them a

chance of beating the glamour pairing of Christen Me and Terror To Love.

Hands Christian resumed off an injury-enforced layoff in the Canterbury Classic at Addington a fortnight ago and was very impressive in running into fourth spot.

Adore Me finished sixth in the same race and could be seen putting in powerful strides late in the race.

Two of the stables other New Zealand Trotting Cup aspirants, Fly Like An Eagle and Arden Rooney, will contest a lower grade race instead of the Flying Stakes.

Both are last start winners and along with fellow stablemate Messini will give their opposition plenty to think about.

That lower grade races also feature Tiger Tara who is building towards a start in the Cup as well.

Other leading chances come from Backup, Prince Fearless, Rare Opportunity, Hug The Wind, Willow and Bio Marinus – all of whom could realistically start favourite.

Riding Shotgun takes aim at Guineas Riding Shotgun’s classic preparation gained serious momentum at Riccarton on Saturday where he blasted his rivals away with a commanding performance to claim the Listed Ray Coupland Stakes.

Drawing the outside gate proved no problem for the Byerley Park three-year-old and he left no excuses for the beaten brigade with his last to first effort in take three of the race following the dual abandonments of the Ashburton meeting last Saturday and again on Monday.

Riding Shotgun’s dress rehearsal for the Group 1 Sothys New Zealand 2000 Guineas resulted in TAB bookmakers slashing his odds for the November 8 feature from $31 to $12.

Trained by Leo Molloy, the gelding relished the Good 3 surface at Riccarton and came from the tail-end of the field on the turn to bury his rivals by a widening length and aquarter.

It was Riding Shotgun’s second career victory from 11 appearances, which featured an Ellerslie win last season and a runner-up finish on unsuitably Slow 7 going behind the champion juvenile Vespa in the Listed Karaka Million.

They shared a $41 quote for the Group 1 NZB 1000 Guineas before the Ray Coupland with the Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong-trained La Veuve now down to $31 and Gai Robinson’s Belle Miraaj trimmed to $26.

Coldstream T20 champs

Coldstream became just the second team to win the Mid Canterbury Twenty20 competition, beating Allenton twice to do so in senior cricket on Saturday.

For the first time in seven years of the Twenty20 competition, Tech missed out on the final leaving the sixtime defending champions to watch Coldstream become the new champions.

In what was a playoff for direct entry to the final, Coldstream beat out Allenton by nine wickets.

Allenton were restricted

to 127, dismissed with three balls to spare, with Jordan Bird top contributor with 25.

Richard Print had 3/17 with Jay Houston and Zac Naldrett two wickets each.

Coldstream then chased down the target in the 18th over for the loss of just one wicket, with Bo Houston making 52 not out and Jono Print 38.

The win put Coldstream straight through to the final, while after some deliberation and calculating Allenton also made it through with a superior net run rate after finishing tied on points with Lauriston.

Lauriston knocked out defending champions Tech when they were able to defend their total of 145 to finish with two wins from their three matches, with the previous weekend’s two matches rained off, but the Allenton side had the better net-run rate.

In the other match round robin match, Methven beat Lauriston B chasing down 103 with Davey Maw notching a half century.

The final then had Coldstream up against Allenton for the second time on the day and in a repeat of the earlier match Coldstream won the

toss and put Allenton into bat.

Allenton were 13/3 before Jack Meyrick made 69 as the 2013-14 runners-up made 132/7, while Richard Print, Andrew Bennett and Jacob Wilson taking two wickets each.

The Coldstream chase was anchored by Houston’s unbeaten 68 as he steered his side home for a six-wicket win.

The seniors turn to 45 over cricket, and grass wickets, this Saturday with the start of the Pritchard Shield competition - that trophy is currently held by Methven.
