Amanda Bynes threatens to sue tabloids Troubled actress Amanda Bynes has threatened to sue the editors at a number of US tabloids for publishing “lies” about her. The Hairspray star took to Twitter yesterday to blast the In Touch publication for the way they’ve been covering her return to New York City following a DUI arrest in Los Angeles.

An unnamed In Touch reporter claims he has been speaking to Bynes, who reportedly told him she was miserable living with her parents after she was released from a lengthy psychiatric hospital stay last year. Bynes has now hit back with threats of legal action against the publication. “I am not insane and they lied about me in every way ... Leno planning TV return with car show Funnyman Jay Leno is heading back to TV as the host of a new motoring show. Leno quit as the long-serving host of America’s The Tonight Show in February and he’s already planning a comeback, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His new show for US TV network CNBC will focus on Leno’s love of cars. The comedian has already tasted success with such a show – his car-themed web series Jay’s Garage is an online hit on NBC. com, and a Jay’s Garage special, which aired on CNBC over the US Labor Day weekend.

Moore attends Kutcher baby blessing US actress Demi Moore was reportedly among the guests to attend the Kabbalah baby blessing for Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ newborn daughter. Kutcher and Kunis welcomed their first child, Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher, into the world on September 30.

According to British tabloid The Sun, Kutcher’s ex-wife Moore attended the baby blessing with her two daughters, Rumer and Tallulah Willis.

It is thought Moore gifted the pair with an engraved photo frame and a personalised cashmere blanket.

“Demi and her daughters congratulated the couple while having a quick hold and coo over the baby.

It was great to see her doing so well and at ease with Ashton’s new life as a father and fiance,” a source told The Sun.

Harry Styles spotted with older woman One Direction’s Harry Styles has sparked speculation he is dating another older woman after stepping out with music producer David Foster’s actress daughter, Erin. The boyband star, 20, and 32-year-old Foster visited a pumpkin patch in Los Angeles together recently to pick out their Halloween props. Drivers love their Skodas Despite long being the butt of jokes, Skoda drivers in New Zealand are among the most satisfied with their vehicle. But the vehicle most beloved by its owners is the Toyota HiAce. Consumer NZ asked thousands of drivers to rate vehicle reliability and if they’d buy the same car again. Ninety-five per cent of all Skoda drivers said they were “satisfied or very satisfied” with their cars’ reliability.And 100 per cent of Toyota HiAce drivers said they’d buy again. As well as the HiAce score, Consumer NZ said Toyota had “an unsurpassed reputation for reliability”.

However, “only the Corolla, Prius and Yaris rated above average in this survey. The Avensis was below average and the rest of Toyota’s models were average.” The Honda Jazz and Toyota Corolla were top achievers in the last car reliability survey, in 2011.

Those models were still well-regarded but others joined the ranks of New Zealand’s most reliable in the new survey.

While planning for this year’s Christmas Parade is well under way, the future of the popular event is in crisis after the dissolution of the Ashburton Business Association (ABA).

The parade, along with Boulevard Day, were traditionally run by the ABA, but a new organiser had yet to take over from the now defunct organisation.

Former ABA chairwoman Carol Johns said she had started organising this year’s Christmas Parade herself.

“I noticed it was getting late, so I started planning it,” she said.

She believed there would always be someone willing to take over the organisation of events such as Boulevard Day and the parade, but at this stage there had been no discussions around their future.

Boulevard Day celebrated its 38th birthday this year, while thousands of people had been flocking to the Christmas Parade for decades.

The Christmas Parade has been an annual tradition in Ashburton for decades.

Diplomat’s extradition request filed Malaysia has confirmed it has received a request from New Zealand for the extradition of a diplomat accused of burglary and attempted rape.

An extradition request for Muhammed Rizalman bin Ismail was formally filed on October 3 for him to return to New Zealand to face charges.

Malaysia’s Foreign Min-

istry only confirmed receipt of the request in the past 24 hours.

“Given the excellent bilateral relations between Malaysia and New Zealand, as well as taking into account the strong public interest in the case, the extradition request will undergo the due process of the law,” Malaysia’s For-

eign Ministry said in a new statement published in Malaysian media.

Rizalman was arrested on May 9 after allegedly following 22 year-old Tania Billingsley to her Wellington home and assaulting her.

He was arrested the same night and charged the next day in the Wellington District

Court. He claimed diplomatic immunity and left with his family for Malaysia on May 22.

In June, New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told the Herald on Sunday Rizalman was immediately sent home after his government refused to waive his immunity.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay wasn’t a happy man when he heard this week Ashburton was losing another vital service.

News that the Allenton’s PostShop and Kiwibank outlet was closing down was bad news to someone who frequently uses his own local PostShop – in Methven.

So he asked his staff to get to the bottom of it and he’s pleased with what they’ve found.

He said they were told that essentially the owner – Brian Collins – was retiring and a replacement business had not been found, so it would close.

But the closure announcement has been quickly followed by a reassurement from New Zealand Post that postal services would remain in Allenton.

“We’ve been reassured by New Zealand Post that they will still be looking for a site, and the people of Ashburton deserve the services that any other New Zealander may have,” Mr McKay said.

Mr McKay said he was still a regular user of the Methven PostShop so knew how important they were.

“I’m still behind the times on things like registering vehicles, I still do it at the PostShop,” Mr McKay said.

New Zealand Post general manager of franchise and agency network Jon Andrews said this week that the organisation was committed to continuing to provide services in the Allenton area.

That included a PO Box lobby for PO Box customers, an ATM and most postal services.

“New Zealand Post has looked for a suitable local business to provide services on our behalf but we have not found one within the timeframe. We will continue to look. The result of this search will determine where and how services will be provided in the future.”

A new $20 million supermarket tipped to be Ashburton’s biggest could create 120 new jobs when it is built at the gateway to the town’s main shopping district.

Progressive Enterprises has applied for resource consent to build a Countdown supermarket on land it owns on the corner of South and East streets, consent documents reveal.

The Australian grocer plans to level the former Rural Transport Limited and ITM lumber yard and buildings on the site and replace them with a 4200sqm supermarket and 207 carparks.

This would make “Rivercrossing Countdown” the biggest in town. Estimates suggest it will be 28 per cent bigger than Countdown and 53 per cent bigger than New World.

In effect, it will add nearly 50 per cent more supermarket and grocery space to the district.

Progressive Enterprises already operates a Countdown supermarket further along East Street but documents supporting the proposal suggest this will stay open.

Progressive considered expanding that store but was stymied by the cost of relo-

cating a Telecom transmission tower and the high cost of neighbouring properties, the documents say.

Countdown’s property general manager, Adrian Walker, expected the store to be a near $20 million project and to create up to 120 new jobs.

The timeline for completion was still being determined as were associated traffic or roading requirements, Mr Walker confirmed.

The proposal includes plans to widen State Highway 1 at the South Street and East Street intersection to incorporate a right turn lane and traffic lights.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has given verbal approval in principle for traffic lights to be installed, a report prepared for Progressive by consultants TDG says.

The provisional cost of installing signals was estimated at $1.12 million. There would have to be talks with the council and NZTA to see how the cost would be apportioned.

Ashburton District Council district planner Ian Hyde confirmed the next step was to decide whether either or both of the applications need to be notified.

That was likely to happen within the next week, Mr Hyde said.

In other supporting documents, consultant ME Spatial suggests the town’s other supermarkets would “suffer large trade competition impacts” but not enough to make them close.

It estimates there is sufficient demand for 1430sqm more grocery space in Ashburton, with demand hitting 4200sqm – the size of the proposed supermarket – by 2031.

Ashburton supermarkets made sales worth about $96.3 million last year, the report suggests. Just $3.6 million of that was sold to people from outside the district.

New Zealand-owned grocery giant Foodstuffs has plans for a new supermarket on a site it owns in Ashburton.

But just what supermarket it may build, just how close it is and whether Progressive’s announcement would have any impact remains unclear.

Foodstuffs South Island property development general manager Roger Davidson yesterday confirmed the company had plans for the West Street site it bought in 2013.

“We do have development plans in the pipeline for Ashburton,” he said in a statement supplied in response to questions from the Guardian.

“Due to our high profile site, we are currently evaluating the market to ensure that we choose the best fit, from our stable of brands, for the region.”

A company spokeswoman would not elaborate on the statement, leaving questions as to which of the company’s brands were likely to be built on the site unanswered.

Also unanswered were questions as to whether Ashburton is big enough to support another, large-format super-

market and whether it might be affected

by Progressive’s plans for a 4200sqm supermarket on South Street.

Foodstuffs’ one hectare West Street site used to be home to Canterbury Flourmill. Progressive had also evaluated it as a site for a new supermarket, it emerged this week.

In documents supporting Progressive’s application, consultants ME Spatial suggest Ashburton has room for 1430sqm more grocery floor space but that demand would support another 4200sqm by 2031.

This assumption is based on the market staying as it is.

ME Spatial says the other supermarkets in Ashburton will “suffer large trade competition impacts” but not enough to force any to close.

It says Foodstuffs’ New World is the only presence in the market of that brand and so that would be unlikely to close.

There have long been rumours that Foodstuffs was considering a Pak ‘N Save for West Street. Mr Davidson scotched those rumours in March, but that was before development plans for the one hectare site were confirmed.

Plans to build a $20 million supermarket in Ashburton will be a fillip for jobs and will reinforce the growing district’s need for sustainable services, mayor Angus McKay says.

The 120 jobs likely at the new Countdown supermarket were a “massive” boost to employment and would have a significant knock-on to other parts of the community, he said.

Jobs meant pay packets and that pay would be new money spent on goods and services provided by local businesses.

This would improve employment prospects elsewhere.

Progressive Enterprises’ supermarket would provide a breadth of employment opportunities, encouraging population stability and growth in the working age population.

This would have a further knock-on effect on things such as growth in school rolls and the maintenance of high-level health provision in the district, Mr McKay said.

Council staff and Progressive representatives met many times over the past few months to discuss the plans and it was pleasing the project had moved to the consent application stage.

“It is good to see this sort of proposal. It’s the sort of thing

that the district needs to keep itself growing and it is very pleasing that there is confidence to invest here.”

That confidence appears reflected in the volume of resource consent applications processed by the council in recent months.

District planning manager Ian Hyde said staff have dealt with 70 resource consent applications in the July to September period. They dealt with 48 in the same period last year.

Many may be linked to historically high numbers of building consents or non-compliance issues associated with earthquake rules. Either way “there

has certainly been a jump in the past year”.

There had been strong preapplication interest in a number of projects but council staff could not comment on specific details as they were often commercially sensitive and sometimes subject of negotiation.

In many cases, the discussions do not get to the stage of a resource consent application.

However, it all suggested interest in development was high.

“Suffice to say though that the general tone appears to be that there is an air of confidence about Ashburton and that people are interested in investing in the town.”

Statement retracted A New Zealand woman has retracted her statement after saying a group of men raped her in Sydney after she met one of them on the Tinder dating application. The 28-year-old New Zealander withdrew her statement late Thursday, New South Wales police said yesterday. “As a result, the investigation into the alleged sexual assault, which was being led by the Sex Crimes Squad, has now concluded pending any further information being provided,” Sydney’s SCC Sex Crimes Squad said.

Riverton assault A man is in serious condition in Dunedin Hospital after an assault in Riverton overnight on Thursday. Police are investigating the assault at a property which left the 32-year-old man with head injuries. He was taken to Invercargill Hospital but later flown to Dunedin Hospital because of the severity of his injuries, police said yesterday. Scene examinations had been done and witnesses spoken to.

Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton has confirmed a Masterton police officer will be charged with careless driving in relation to a two-car collision in June.

The crash, which took place at the intersection of Fox St and Birdwood Street in Featherston, involved an unmarked police car and a Toyota Surf ute. The impact flipped the Toyota onto its side and the police vehicle, a Holden Commodore, was extensively damaged. Neither driver was injured.

Schools boost local economy

Mid Canterbury schools have injected more than $130 million into the local economy over the past five years, and that number is set to rise even further thanks to Mid Canterbury’s population boom.

Figures released by the Ministry of Education show the amount Mid Canterbury state and state integrated schools paid out in staff salaries has increased by 13 per cent, jumping from $24 million to $28 million

between 2009 and 2013.

That number looks set to rise, with more than $21 million already paid out this year.

The rising number of new entrants starting school in the region also has schools scrambling to hire more teachers, which will push that number up even further in 2015.

Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said his school, which had a roll of 270 pupils, employed 26 staff across a variety of areas, including teachers, teacher aides, office

administrators, caretakers and librarians.

Mr Murphy said education was a mass local provider, and it made a “significant contribution” to the community.

If it’s not the biggest employer in the region, it would be very close to it,” he said.

Mid Canterbury is set to become a hub of primary industry training, as Aoraki Polytechnic looks to build on its agriculture programmes at its Ashburton campus.

The news comes amid concerns over the number of New Zealanders gaining primary industry qualifications, with just 365 people gaining a primary industry degree last year.

Agriculture graduates are therefore in high demand and looking to earn top dollars, with agricultural science degree graduates starting out at around $70,000 per year.

Aoraki Polytechnic chief executive officer Alex Cabrera said the courses offered by the polytechnic had to be more related to the region, and as a result Ashburton would become the polytechnic’s primary industries training centre.

“The region is doing really well, and we need to be part of that,” he said.

Mr Cabrera said the polytechnic had been working on the change for the past 12 months, and it had also formed a Collaborative Relationship Agreement with

Lincoln University to share resources and experience.

Aoraki Polytechnic had also been working closely with Grow Mid Canterbury and Federated Farmers.

Grow Mid Canterbury CEO Rob Brawley said Mid Canterbury was the “logical place” for agri-business education, as agri-business was very strong in the region.

“There’s farmers that need more highly educated staff,” he said.

Mr Brawley said Grow Mid Canterbury appreciated the close working relationship it had developed with Aoraki Polytechnic, and he believed it would be “excellent” for the region.

Mr Cabrera said the polytechnic would be investing heavily in Mid Canterbury, and there were also discussions around the potential for tourism programmes that would be based in Methven.

He was unable to say exactly how many students they were looking to enroll, but he said student numbers needed to “grow significantly”.

Non-agricultural courses currently offered at the Ashburton campus would not be affected by the changes, he said.

Farmer’s $75,000 tractor stolen

Fergus Wakelin is mystified as to how, and why, someone could steal his $75,000 tractor.

He’d left it in a paddock on the grazing block where he works on State Highway 72, near Mt Somers, at about 5.30pm on September 29, but when he returned at about 8am the following day, it was gone.

“I doubted whether I had actually parked it in that spot,” Mr Wakelin said.

He looked around and called

a few mates he thought it was possible could have borrowed it.

Nothing turned up.

The four-year-old John Deere tractor was gone; it had been stolen.

“Footprints went straight up to the door of the tractor and there was just wheel marks going out the gate, and we haven’t seen it since,” he said.

Further inspection revealed two sets of gumboot prints, indicating two people had been involved, and the wheel marks showed it had headed towards

the Mt Somers township.

The tractor had only been on the block since the Sunday night and was about 200-300 metres off the road the night it was stolen. It was locked, so Mr Wakelin suspects whoever stole it was in possession of another John Deere key, and also already had a bucket to fit it. His tractor had forks on it at the time, and a near-new bucket sitting right beside it which would only have taken a minute to fit. They didn’t take it.

“And there was a motorbike

sitting beside it with tools on the back and it was just left there too,” Mr Wakelin said.

The tractor was full of fuel at the time so could be anywhere by now, but Mr Wakelin is hopeful it may be found.

“I am hopeful, but I just don’t know what state it will be in if I do get it back,” he said.

If there was one consolation, the thief – or thieves – were considerate.

“They were even nice enough to close the gate on their way out.”

Protect yourself against rural burglaries Facebook page in bid to fight crime

Police are issuing advice to Mid Canterbury farmers following what they’re calling a “slight increase” in rural burglaries in recent weeks.

The thefts are being called opportunistic and items taken included chainsaws, quad bikes, farm bikes and in one case, a tractor.

A police spokesperson said there were steps farmers could take to protect themselves, such as keeping valuables out of sight, removing keys, locking up sheds, closing gates and setting house alarms.

“Some farmers have gone a step further and installed CCTV or motion activated still cameras and

alarms on their farm buildings which are great deterrents for opportunistic burglars and a good way to protect their property and assets,” the police spokesperson said.

Thieves were caught on camera taking items from a Lagmhor farm shed in the early hours of Monday morning and still photographs are now circulating on Facebook.

“If you have a driveway alarm installed, trimming nearby shrubbery can help prevent them being set off accidentally during a nor’wester, while still being alerted if someone comes onto your property,” the police spokesperson said.

Police are encouraging people to contact them if they notice anything

out of the ordinary or suspicious, and asking farmers to let their employees and neighbours know too so their communities could stay alert.

People are also being reminded that entering details, serial numbers and other information about your possessions and asserts on the SNAP website, www.snap.org.nz, is another way of protecting yourself. SNAP is an initiative of the New Zealand Police that aims to prevent burglary and property offending by making it harder for stolen goods to be sold.

A spate of rural thefts in Mid Canterbury has resulted in the setting up of a Facebook page dedicated to sharing information on suspicious activity in rural areas.

The page – NZF Hoodrat Watch – has been set up by those behind the NZ Farming Facebook page, which was started up only five months ago and already has more than 18,000 ‘likes’.

Already the NZ Hoodrat Watch page features security camera footage from a theft from a Lagmhor farmyard, and a photo of a large John Deere tractor taken from a Mt Somers property last week.

The page’s founder Tyler Fifield said it was already proving its worth, with information coming in relating to the tractor. Someone had seen it being driven down the road in the middle of the night so was able to say what direction it was heading and how far it might have got under the cover of darkness.

Mr Fifield said NZ Farming had a wide reach, with followers from around the country, so information shared on its pages was seen by thousands.

“We have a really big reach. Often you talk to people and they say they saw something suspicious or something different, but up until now that information has been useless because you couldn’t share it with other people,” Mr Fifield said.

“We can put 20,000 people on the case.”

Mr Fifield started the original NZ Farming page after moving to South Canterbury from Taranaki and finding that too many people living in isolated rural areas were lonely.

So he established an online community, which had snowballed. NZ Farming now has a number of side pages – the latest being NZF Hoodrat Watch - and is all about bringing rural communities together.

Police said while they supported such pages and did monitor social media, it was also important that information was passed on to them too.

“The key is that information at the time, and allowing us to get there,” Ashburton police sergeant Janine Bowden said.

Even seeing unusual tyre tracks in a paddock could be a vital piece of a wider puzzle.

“It means the next night we can target that area.

But if we don’t know, we can’t respond,” she said.

Helicopter pilot’s body found A piece of paper caught in a tree led searchers to the wreckage of a missing helicopter and the body of pilot Damian Webster in Kahurangi National Park.

Damian Webster was flying from Karamea on the West Coast to Nelson on a maintenance mission on Tuesday, along with another helicopter, when his aircraft, a Robinson 44, was lost over the Kahuran-

A helicopter crew member identified what appeared to be a sheet of paper in the trees of the national park, Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) spokesman Steve Rendle said.

A crewman was winched

down and was able to confirm the paper was linked to Mr Webster’s missing helicopter.

The crewman was also able to locate a piece of the perspex from the helicopter.

“Such with the nature of the terrain it took another two or three hours to find the wreckage itself,” Mr Rendle said.

Earlier this week the pilot’s uncle Peter Webster said his nephew, a father-of-one in his

30s, had been living in Karamea and working as a builder.

He said Mr Webster’s parents and other immediate family had been together in Nelson awaiting news.

He described his nephew as a “great, great guy”.

A police spokeswoman said Mr Webster’s body would be removed from the scene of the crash today.

Kidnap accused named The woman accused of abducting a 5-day-old baby from Middlemore Hospital can now be named.

Loni Marsh – who spent her 27th birthday in custody yesterday – and Faatiga Joe Manutui, 31, appeared in Manukau District Court yesterday charged with kidnapping.

While Manutui pleaded not guilty and elected trial by jury, Marsh was remanded in custody without plea until later this month.

The baby was allegedly taken as the mother had a shower and staff were busy by a couple who were apparently able to circumvent security that had been beefed up only two years ago after another baby abduction.

The baby girl was found at the Manurewa property about 4am, safe and well, and was reunited with her parents.

Elsje Pretorius gave birth to Nadine, her third daughter, on September 20. The pair returned to Middlemore days later with complications.

About 8pm on September 25, just after visiting hours had finished and family members had left, Mrs Pretorius had a quick shower in the ensuite while Nadine was sleeping. When she got out of the shower, the baby was gone.

But she hasn’t always been that way. Philippa suffers from depression. She told her story to Erin Tasker in the hope it will help even one person.

hilippa Reid used to have a “pull your socks up” attitude towards depres-

sion.

But then she experienced it herself and realised it wasn’t that simple.

Philippa had always been a happy, energetic and driven person, but when she hit her early 30s that all changed.

Stressful situations piled up on top of one another and all of a sudden Philippa wasn’t happy.

She was tired all the time, had lost her appetite and deep down, she just knew something was wrong.

A mother of four children aged under four-and-a-half at the time, including young tri-

plets, Philippa was a busy mum.

But she knew what she was feeling was more than the typical parenting stress.

So Philippa took herself off to her doctor. Blood tests revealed nothing and what Philippa was feeling was put down to the fact she was a busy mum with a large, young family.

That was it.

Eventually, Philippa sought a second opinion and that led to the diagnosis of depression.

It was as much of a shock to Philippa as anyone else.

Due to the timing, it would be easy to think that the pressures of raising triplets was the trigger for Philippa’s depression, but Philippa knows there

was a lot more to it than that.

She’d been dealt her fair share of stress and there was more to come.

From losing her mother to cancer at age 52, to dealing with fertility issues in the earlier years, to dealing with a cancer scare of her own – a cancerous tumour removed from her kidney – and one of her sons having heart surgery at age 15, in more recent years. The stress has just kept on coming.

For Philippa, the answer was medication. It made an immediate impact.

“I started on some anti-depressants and after eight days I felt like a different person,” Philippa said.

She knew parenting was probably part of it. Philippa said it didn’t matter how many kids you had, parenting was hard.

“Nothing prepares you for the challenge of parenting. Looking back I didn’t have the skills and the understanding to deal with it,” she said.

Following her diagnosis, Philippa received counselling; counselling which gave her the skills to deal with parenting and life.

“At the time (depression) feels like something you’ll never get away from, or a restraint on your life, but it is manageable,” Philippa said.

It didn’t feel like that on day one of her journey. Her mind

was not in a good place.

When she first went to the doctor, she was extremely fatigued. No matter how much sleep she got, the fatigue didn’t go away.

“I wanted to sleep all the time.”

Some depression sufferers experienced brain fog, or lack of concentration; that wasn’t a big problem for Philippa, but a decrease in appetite was.

“That’s what happened to me, or I would go the other way and eat all the wrong things.”

Suddenly she didn’t enjoy activities she once did and was suffering from headaches.

“My head felt heavy all the time. My limbs felt heavy; it’s

Little things like thinking about what to cook the family for dinner, became big issues, and Philippa experienced feelings of hopelessness and wondering if she’d ever feel better.

“I have never really contemplated suicide, but people do, and I know the desperation that they feel,” she said.

Philippa knew she’d been fortunate though.

Through it all she’d had the neverending support of her husband Martin and their four children.

went to see both a psychiatrist and a counsellor who helped her come to terms with the fact she had depression – something she never dreamt she’d suffer from.

Counselling gave her tools on how best to cope with stress and anxiety.

“I have learnt to manage my body and look after it,” she said.

“The doctor told me that stress can deplete serotonin levels in the brain and continued stress can mean it doesn’t fully build up again.”

Her battle is ongoing and it can be difficult.

“At times it’s very frustrating because I feel like I haven’t got the up and go to go and do things,” Philippa said.

But she’s learnt she needs to have regular time-outs to reenergise, whether it be having coffee with a friend, or singing in the worship team at the family’s church, the Ashburton New Life Church.

She’s also become a planner, planning on ways to keep her stress levels down and ensuring she hangs out with positive people.

She tries to keep a thankful heart and not accept negativity or fear.

“My relationship with God has helped in the fact that I know that I’m here for a purpose.”

She’s tried to get herself off the medication before, but the

same old symptoms came back again.

Some might say medication is a cop-out, but Philippa doesn’t agree. For her, it’s allowed her to keep living a normal life.

“Some people can get through depression without medication, but I haven’t been able to “I was really busy … I had good support, but still, mum’s the kingpin isn’t she?”

Philippa is certain there will be people out there suffering from depression, who aren’t even aware they’re sick.

“My previous idea was that people who suffered from depression just needed to pull their socks up and get on with life, and get a life,” she said.

“So I had no understanding that it was actually a sickness, not a weakness. It’s a chemical imbalance, not a character flaw.”

And she doesn’t believe she’s alone. Too many people believe people with depression just need to get over themselves.

So she wants her story to help others; she wants everyone to see that depression can affect anyone. If telling her story triggers just one person to seek help before it’s too late, it’s a win.

Philippa knows there is life with, and after, depression.

“It’s not a life sentence. You can still lead a fulfilling life and you don’t have to suffer alone, there is help available.”

“Internationally you can see that people are going to work pretty hard to try and contain it in the event that the disease was to mutate which is obviously a much more serious potential risk and so that’s something we will consider but we haven’t taken any advice on that yet.”

Police are investigating an incident at Hampstead Primary School on Sunday, after three children were approached by a suspicious male.

The two girls and a boy, aged between 11 and 12, were playing in the school grounds at around 5.30pm on October 5 when the male called out to them from his car. He returned a short time later and asked the two girls to get into his car. The man was described as having tanned skin and short hair, and the car was small and coloured grey or silver. Police have so far been unable to locate the male or the vehicle, any person with information should contact the Ashburton police on 03 307 8400 or anonymously at Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

By IsAAc dAvIson Conservative Party leader Colin Craig has dropped his defamation case against Russel Norman over comments the Green Party co-leader made at the Big Gay Out. The two politicians released a joint statement yesterday which said they had agreed to resolve their dispute.

“Both accept that the comments were made on a political occasion, but they disagree about what the comments were understood to mean.

“Neither party considers there is value in continuing with the dispute in the courts.”

Mr Craig was seeking a retraction from Dr Norman after the Green MP said the Conservatives leader “thinks a woman’s place is in the kitchen”.

He had initially also sought a retraction of Dr Norman’s comment that Mr Craig thought “a gay man’s place is in the closet”, but he later narrowed the scope of his case.

The comments were made by Dr Norman during a speech at the Auckland festival in February.

Mr Craig had not sought damages, and each party would cover their own costs, the joint statement said.

Both Mr Craig and Dr Norman sought donations from supporters to cover their legal fees.

Dr Norman expected his fees to be around $75,000 if the case went to court. If was not known how much he raised through his public appeal.

A 47-year-old Ashburton man has been arrested for male assaults female.

Found by police Two men and a woman were located by police on Thursday and arrested on warrants to arrest.

Unexpected guests A wedding breakfast at the Methven Heritage Centre had some unexpected guests yesterday in the form of the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade. They arrived a little early though, turning up after receiving a 111 call to the kitchen.

Plane flips coming into land Three men on board a light plane escaped injury when it flipped as it came into land at Hawke’s Bay Airport yesterday.

The crash-landing, just after noon, disrupted flights into and out of the airport for about two hours.

Witnesses said the Cessna 206 appeared to make an abrupt last-minute change of direction as it prepared to touch down on the airport’s secondary east-west runway.

The plane appeared to lose

power and nose-dived, ending up resting upside-down on grass near the northern end of the main north-south runway used by commercial aircraft.

Police said the pilot and two passengers on board managed to get out of the plane and were not injured.

Several fire appliances, police, and St John ambulance crews responded to the crash.

St John staff assessed all three of the men who were on the Cessna but none of them

needed to be transported to hospital.

“One of the men had very minor injuries to his arm,” district operations manager Stephen Smith said.

The airport’s commercial manager, Wayne Wootton, said the Cessna belonged to a local operator based at the airport but he was unable to release further details yesterday.

The incident was referred to the Civil Aviation Authority.

The 78-year-old local woman was charged with careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury and will appear in Palmerston North District Court October 16, police said.

Guilty plea A man charged with killing a Wainuiomata hairdresser has pleaded guilty to murder. Stokes Valley man Joseph Rota entered the plea in the High Court at Wellington yesterday. Hairdresser Huri King-Mosen was found dead in his home in October last year. Rota will be sentenced on November 7.

Attempted murder A man accused of attempted murder in an early-morning shooting in Wellington has pleaded guilty. John David Schuster, along with Teariki Terry McBride, was arrested after 55-year-old man was shot on Wellington’s Makara Beach in April. Little banking on clean break Labour’s latest leadership hopeful admits he may be the underdog but his entry could throw the contest wide open if he can persuade enough MPs he is the clean break the party needs to get back on track.

Andrew Little will go up against Grant Robertson and David Cunliffe while David Parker and David Shearer are still possible late entries before nominations close on Tuesday.

Several Labour MPs are still waiting to see if others put their names in before deciding who to back, but Little is likely to get at least six or seven MPs. Those who could opt for Little include the likes of Iain Lees-Galloway, Kelvin Davis, Rino Tirikatene, Damien O’Connor, and Mr Parker and Mr Shearer if they do not stand themselves.

Mr O’Connor, who infamously described Labour’s list ranking committee in 2011 as

“self-serving unionists and a gaggle of gays” said he would not make a decision until all candidates were known.

EPMU secretary Bill Newsom said the union will decide whether to recommend a candidate after nominations close next Tuesday. “But ... there has to be a strong possibility of my union endorsing Andrew.”

Mr Little could also get strong backing from the Dairy Workers’ Union which is now led by Chris Flatt, who was Labour’s general secretary under Mr Little before 2011.

Grant Robertson acknowledged Mr Little’s union background would help him but did not believe his own chances were reduced.

Labour uses a preferential voting system under which the lowest ranked candidate is knocked out until one gets more than 50 per cent support.

Kiwi nurses back home after ebola effort

BY LINDY LAIRD A Whangarei nurse who spent a month working at a purpose-built ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone is home again but says she’d go back to diseasetorn west Africa in a heartbeat.

Donna Collins and Wellington nurse Sharon Mackie went to Sierra Leone in August with the International Federation of Red Cross.

Both women did specialist humanitarian aid training with Red Cross two years ago but the ebola epidemic was Ms Collins’ first front-line experience.

The Kiwi nurses asked for their threeweek contract in Sierra Leone to be extended by another week, “as we still had a job to do”.

When they arrived the number of the cases in Sierra Leone were still relatively low. “But then it took off like wildfire in the four weeks we were there,” Ms Collins said.

With improved education and early health care, the death toll that initially saw up to 75 per cent of victims die came down to about 50 per cent.

The Red Cross Ebola Treatment Centre, about 18km out of Kenema, was built in a matter of weeks on land shaved out of the jungle. When it was ready, the Red Cross medical and aid teams carried out a “slow response”, in which every process is measured, planned and part of a rigorous process rather than “fighting

fire with fire”.

The international team was responsible for every aspect of developing and running the facility, including sourcing supplies _ such as scrubs and gumboots _ and training workers.

“You’re never just a nurse,” Ms Collins said.

The Kenema treatment centre was considered a five-star facility “because we had piped chlorine”.

Its isolation from town meant most patients were ambulanced there, helping control the rate at which cases arrived and could be helped. With no vaccination yet available, care was based on treating other illnesses the patient had, nutrition, worming, hygiene and combating the extremely high fever that comes with the virus.

At the same time the Red Cross and associated groups built the treatment centre, they developed a triage facility outside the Kenema Government Hospital to catch patients presenting with ebola.

“In triage we had a 1.5-metre high wire fence between us and the patients.

You could tell straight away if someone had ebola. We could stop them entering the general hospital and get them to our centre.”

Ms Collins returned to work as a midwife and nurse at Whangarei Hospital on Wednesday after spending 21 days in quarantine.

Ashburton man Jackson Print, 21, is expecting to remain on dialysis for up to five years as he waits for a life-changing kidney transplant.

F

or hundreds of anxious New Zealanders, each day is a waiting game as they hold out for potentially lifesaving news that may never come.

More than 400 people in New Zealand are waiting for organ transplants and with more people needing organs than there are organ donors, that wait could be in vain.

For Ashburton man Jackson Print, it’s an issue that hits close to home.

Twenty-one-year-old Jackson was born with kidney failure and chronic renal failure, and along with 350 other New Zealanders, he is on the national waiting list for a new kidney.

People are automatically put on a transplant waiting list when their kidney function falls to 10 per cent and Jackson’s kidneys are functioning at just 6 per cent of what they should be.

When he was born, doctors did not expect Jackson to survive for more than a few months, but he defied the odds and, 21 years later, is still hope-

He has been on the waiting list for six months, but estimates he could be waiting for three to five years because of a lack of donors.

Jackson also recently began peritoneal dialysis, which he has to stay on for nine hours per night, and required a catheter to be placed in his abdomen.

Dialysis performs some of the functions that working kidneys usually would, such as “cleaning” the blood and drawing out extra fluid and waste products.

Unfortunately for Jackson, kidney problems appear to run in the family, with Jackson’s brothers unable to donate a kidney to their sibling because they both had irregularly sized kidneys.

The lack of donors has become a major concern in

New Zealand and despite over one million people indicating on their driver’s licence that they would like to donate their organs after their death, only a small number of those will pass away in a manner that would make organ transplant possible.

For example, people who die from heart attacks or at accident scenes are unable to donate, as the lack of oxygen supply to the organs makes them unsuitable for donation.

In 2013, just 36 organ donations were made by deceased donors.

The shortage of donors is the main push behind Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Day, which is organised by Organ Donation New Zealand.

This year’s event aims to educate people and get them to have a conversation with their

loved ones about organ donation. For Jackson, more donors could have a significant impact on his life and he believes it is incredibly important.

“It’s good to try to get more people donating and help some other people out too,” he said.

Despite the seriousness of his health problems, Jackson said he was relatively unaffected by the condition as a child, although he often woke up with headaches and stomach aches as he became dehydrated during the night.

“I had a fair few doctor’s visits,” he said.

He is also unable to drink alcohol, but still acts as a sober driver for his friends.

As his condition worsened, Jackson, a qualified painter, was forced to give up his work as a car spray painter in Methven because he was getting too

tired to continue with fulltime work. He now works at Repco on a casual basis.

At one point, after working a five-day week and helping his brother with his car in the weekend, he was hospitalised for five days after his blood pressure dropped dramatically.

“I’d stand up and pretty much faint,” he said.

Even if a kidney becomes available for Jackson, his life will still be a challenge after the transplant.

It is possible that his body could reject the organ and wearing long clothes and piling on the sunscreen will be a daily reality, as kidney transplant recipients have a much higher chance of getting skin cancer.

Despite his condition, Jackson is positive about the future.

“I’ve just gotta get on with it really.”

Bloating

Although seeing your doctor and keeping a food diary will help tackle your bloating issues, for a fast fix to alleviate the symptoms take a probiotic, which contains good bacteria.When our good bacterium gets low, we are unable to break down food and prevent yeast overgrowth; this leads to bloating. Try a probiotic yoghurt with berries for breakfast.

Hayfever

Hayfever is an allergy that is typically caused by pollen.

Although hayfever can affect people all year round, people usually suffer from symptoms in spring, and sometimes summer, because trees and other vegetation are pollinating. If you’re fed up with sneezing and want to enjoy those long, sunny days, a fast fix is to plug in an air conditioner.

Air conditioners can filter out 99 per cent of airborne pollen.

For a sweeter remedy, eat one tablespoon of honey from your local area a day. Although researchers have been unable to prove honey’s effectiveness in relieving hayfever symptoms, lots of people swear by it, claiming the honey desensitises you to the pollen.

Anxiety

Although it’s natural to worry, anxiety can become a disorder if people overly worry without necessary triggers or causes.

Generalised anxiety disorder is thought to be caused by many things, including a chemical imbalance in the brain, the environment you are in and your genetics.

Although medication and cognitive therapy are typically used to treat the condition, for a quick fix do some aerobic exercise.

According to a report on the influence of exercise on mental health from Arizona State University, aerobic exercise is the best choice for anxiety reduction.

You can also do some breathing techniques.

The girls had gone through pool play unbeaten with wins over North Harbour A and B, Tasman, and Hawkes Bay before they dispatched Waitakere West 61-37 in the quarter-finals. The Canterbury Country boys made it to the top eight but went down to Auckland in the quarter-finals 53-63. They then had Hawkes Bay in the fifth to eighth semifinals last night.

Kiwis in with a shot New Zealand have a great chance to put another dent in injury-hit Australia’s long dominance over international rugby league in the Four Nations tournament beginning later this month. The Kiwis shocked the Kangaroos when they won the 2008 World Cup. They have since largely failed to back up but, with up to 20 big name Australians out of the six-week tournament due to injury, the Kiwis have a golden opportunity to knock Australia off their perch. A likely Kiwis side in the tournament opener will have over 200 games of Test experience, while Australia can only muster 134.

Warriors franchise heading to Wellington?

By John Weekes Wellington would be the Warriors’ second home if the capital’s council succeeds in a bid to lure the league franchise south.

But a Warriors stalwart is sceptical, and preparing for “war” after Auckland Council said the team must leave Mt Smart Stadium at the end of 2018.

Wellington Deputy Mayor Justin Lester said it made sense for the Warriors to play more games at Westpac Stadium, known as The Cake Tin. “It’s a likelihood. We don’t want to take the Warriors from South Auckland. It’s their spir-

itual home,” Mr Lester said yesterday.

“But if they’ve no longer got that home and they’ve got nowhere to go ... then we’re a real option.”

The deputy mayor said it was realistic to aim for three Warriors games a year and Wellington would welcome the league franchise “with open arms” if they took up the offer.

Wellington City Council approached the Warriors with the suggestion and council representatives would meet team bosses next week for more talks.

Mr Lester said the Phoenix football team proved Wellington

could host a major sports franchise playing in a transtasman league.

“It’s been a phenomenal success and it’s been a saviour of New Zealand football. There’s no reason why that couldn’t happen with the Warriors.”

Mr Lester said previous Warriors games in Wellington pulled big crowds, including a 2013 match against the Bulldogs attracting 32,000 people.

He believed Wellington could outdo Auckland venues on crowd attendance for three Warriors games a year.

“We wouldn’t have to sell out the stadium,” he said. “If we

could consistently do 18 to 20 thousand, we’d be doing well.”

Longstanding Warriors supporter and patron Sir Peter Leitch said one match a year in Wellington was a good idea, but season ticket holders would probably draw the line there.

“If they’re going to play games out of Auckland they could turn a few people off being season ticket holders.”

Sir Peter said if three games were held every year in Wellington, the capital would also struggle to attract decent crowds.

“It’s too big a stadium. If you get say 14,000, that stadium looks empty,” he said. - APNZ

Skiers among the medals The Donaldsons picked up three medals at the Asia-Oceania Waterski Championships in Perth this week.

Rachel (right) won bronze in the open women’s tricks competition when she scored her post-knee injury equal personal best of 3580 points, choosing the right round to stand both her hand and toe passes to step onto the tricks podium.

She was ranked sixth going into the competition, and was still seeded sixth after the preliminary round on Thursday.

Lana Donaldson and Hilary Munro also made the women’s final, scoring 2660 and 3100, for fifth and sixth respectively.

The gold medal was won by China’s Hui Jiang with 4230, while Malaysian hot favourite, Aaliyah Young-Hannifah, settled for silver with 4190.

14-year-old Hugh Donaldson then convincingly took out the under 17 boys’ as the only competitor to score over 4000 twice to take gold, while his twin brother George finished in third spot.

Lauren still a medal chance in Adelaide

Hinds cyclist Lauren Ellis will be chasing another medal in the 20km points race at the Oceania Track Championships in Adelaide tonight.

Ellis won gold in the team pursuit with Jaime Nielsen, Racquel Sheath and Georgia Williams on Wednesday but could only manage 10th in the 3000m individual pursuit on Thursday night.

After the New Zealanders dominated the opening day with four wins, the hosts won the individual pursuit for both women on the second day of competition.

The best of the New Zealanders was Nielsen, who was third in the women’s 3000m individual pursuit, edging out team-mate Georgia Williams.

championship bronze medallist, beat fellow Kiwi Marc Ryan, the current world bronze medallist, for third place in the men’s 4000m individual pursuit.

New Zealand’s star on the second day was Palmerston North teenager Campbell Stewart, who dominated the junior omnium competition. He won five of the six disciplines and was second in the remaining event to win overall with 222 points, which was 30 points clear of his nearest rival. After winning the final omnium event, the 25km points race, Stewart dominated the junior men’s scratch race.

Last night’s action featured the individual sprint and completion of the elite omnium with the competition concluding tonight.

The Silver Ferns have had little to celebrate during the Constellation Cup series, but their captain Casey Kopua will tonight give them some reason for cheer as she notches a significant milestone in the black dress.

Kopua will overtake Lyn Gunson’s long-standing record as the most-capped New Zealand skipper when she runs out on court against Australia in the third test in Sydney.

The star defender, who has played 86 tests for the Ferns, will notch up her 63rd appearance as captain, eclipsing Gunson (formerly Parker), who was captain from 1978-85.

With Lisa Alexander’s Diamonds in dominant form, winning the last seven meetings between the two sides, the chances of the Ferns marking the milestone with a win look incredibly slim.

But the New Zealand side will regardless make it a special occasion for their inspirational captain, with the team to honour Kopua following the game with a private presentation.

She was considered a bold choice as captain in 2009 following the retirement of midcourt veteran Julie Seymour. Although the star defender was one of the younger members of the team, she commanded the respect of the entire squad with her ability to lead from the front and fire the team with her inspirational play.

It was the off-court demands of the job that didn’t come as naturally for Kopua, who took some time to adjust to the added public speaking requirements.

After a one-goal test loss in Invercargill resulted in a series loss to Australia in her first season in charge, Kopua famously uttered in the post-match interview that she was “pissed off ” her side hadn’t managed to get over the line.

While the remark drew criticism from more conservative members of the netball set, Kopua’s candour won her respect from general sports fans, particularly male, who had long sneered at netball’s controversy-shy approach.

Quade returns Quade Cooper is set to make his return to Test rugby from the bench after being named in the Wallabies’ 32-man squad for next week’s third Bledisloe Cup match against New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium. The talented five-eighth is set to be named as a reserve, however Cooper’s return for the clash at Suncorp Stadium on October 18 is timely given the suspension of Kurtley Beale.

Crunch time

Mid Canterbury meet the old foe South Canterbury in a must-win match for both teams in the Heartland Rugby Championship in Timaru today.

The two sides are tied on 21 points on the ladder and the winner will advance to the Meads Cup semi-finals, and of course lay claim to the Hanan Shield.

South Canterbury will be most concerned that their early season from has faded, coming in off backto-back losses, while the side that thrashed them 61-29 in pre-season is hitting their straps at the business end of the competition.

Mid Canterbury coach Glenn Moore puts little weight into the preseason result two months ago and expects it to be a “real ball-buster” today.

Flanker Gary Redmond and first five eight Murray Williams tore South Canterbury apart in Ashburton in August and they were both pivotal players in last week’s dominant win over North Otago.

It was carried on from a dominant rout of East Coast the week before but Moore expects his side to step up

again with so much at stake today.

“You have to keep getting better every week and certainly getting towards your best at this time of the season.

“My gut feeling is we are starting to climb again and I’ve felt like that since the Buller game.

“Even though we lost that fixture we played some of our best rugby that we had played and you could see that progression.

“There is an element of confidence back with the boys.”

The restored confidence was noticeable and they were willing to throw the ball wide and have a go.

Moore admits that with their attacking style the handling errors will come, but with confidence they tend to stick a bit more.

“There was a couple of mistakes I cringed at but you still have to back yourself to throw that pass.

“I’ve they had of stuck you’re looking at another three tries basically.”

You’ve got to make your luck and don’t win games by shutting up shop, but I think the telling thing has been the lift defensively.”

Mid Canterbury’s only change for the match is injury related with hooker Jon Sharpe (calf) ruled out

and Jackson Donlan stepping up after playing almost 80 minutes in last week’s win over North Otago.

“Jackson has played well in his last two outings and I’ve been quite impressed,” Moore said.

Tukulua Tolu returns from injury to provide cover on the bench while Moore said Simon Fleetwood also provides a hooking option.

Seta Koroitamana also comes back into the squad after missing the last two matches on Heartland Under 19 duties.

The backline remains unchanged given halfback Jake Ashby a second start after a strong display last week.

“I thought Jake was busy in all aspects of his game.

“He passed well and did his core roles well.

“Ran at the right time and strongly but just defended like his life depended on it.

“It was a great outing for someone who has had such a long time off with injuries.”

The defending Meads Cup champions have it all to play for and won’t be focused on repeating their preseason blowout, just wanting the win by whatever margin to advance to the top four playoffs.

Mark Jackman continues to be Mr Fixit for Southland as the Stags line up for a Ranfurly Shield challenge with Hawkes Bay in Napier in the last round of the ITM Cup today.

As well as looking to clinch the Log o’Wood in the final round the win could also secure the Stags’ place in the Championship semi-finals.

After starting at fullback in the last two matches, the win over Canterbury and loss to Counties Manukau, Jackman moves back into centre where he had played the previous three matches for the Stags.

The former Magpie, with 25 caps in the black and white from 2008 to 2011 before becoming a New Zealand Sevens representative, has also popped up on both wings in his debut season in Southland.

The biggest change for the Stags has Lima Sopoaga return to the number 10 after missing last rounds loss to Counties.

Southland are in the race for the fourth semi-final berth in the championship division but are in the fortuitous position of knowing exactly what is required of them before kick-off against the Magpies.

hield challenge Depending on how Otago went against Manawatu in last night’s match and how North Harbour fares against the previously winless Wellington in this afternoon’s first game will see the already assured of fourth spot - which they held going into the last round - or needing a bonus point win to reach the playoffs.

Southland have had a good run with it in recent times, holders twice in the last five seasons.

After being the first South Island province to hold the shield, they had a 50 year drought before lifting the Shield off Canterbury in 2009.

After six successful challenges in 2010 they had to hand it back to Canterbury only to take it back again in 2011, but after two defences they lost it to Taranaki.

The Shield went through four holders in almost four weeks last season, with Southland unable to take it off Counties in the final round.

Hawkes Bay has done a better job holding on to the Shield in 2014 after resting it off Counties, with Southland again having the last challenge of the season.

Ko right on the pace in Malaysia A spectacular second round lifted Lydia Ko to within touching distance of the lead at her comeback tournament on the LPGA Tour.

After spending a month on the sidelines, Ko followed an opening-round two-under 69 at the Sime Darby in Malaysia by firing seven birdies to rocket up the leaderboard.

Ko now sits in a share of second place on nineunder and the world No 3 will head into the third round two shots behind leader So Yeon Ryu of South Korea.

No matter what happens over the rest of the weekend, the event already represents a successful return to the Tour for Ko, who had skipped the last two tournaments to rest her troublesome left wrist.

In brief Mountain bites hard A frighteningly fast Mount Panorama scared David Reynolds at first look, and yesterday, it bit him hard. The rear of Reynold’s Ford was ripped to shreds after it smashed into a concrete wall at over 200km/h in the first 10 minutes of qualifying for the Bathurst 1000.

The Ford Performance Racing driver was trying to avoid traffic when a dirty piece of road near the top of the mountain got the better of him - spinning into the barrier and losing his right rear wheel. His team are confident of getting the Falcon back on track and firing for Sunday’s Great Race - which he’ll start from last on the grid.

2015 Ford’s last year?

Ford’s last-ever Falcon will compete in V8 Supercars next season, but the Blue Oval’s involvement beyond that remains unclear. Factory outfit Ford Performance Racing (FPR) has confirmed it will field four of the new FGX in 2015, with the support of the manufacturer.

Reports emerged yesterday that Ford had already decided to pull out of the category and its multi-million dollar sponsorship of FPR. But team boss Tim Edwards said they were still negotiating the renewal of its deal with them and expects a formal announcement in coming weeks.

Perez slams FIA The circumstances of Jules Bianchi’s life-threatening crash with a recovery vehicle in heavy rain at Suzuka were “totally unacceptable” and must not be repeated, according to Sergio Perez. Murphy’s record goes From one Kiwi to another went the record for the fastest ever trip around Mount Panorama in a V8 Supercar. There was little doubt Greg Murphy’s famous Lap of the Gods was going to be smashed on the new track surface this week.

But few would have expected fellow New Zealander Fabian Coulthard to do it. Coulthard clocked a time of two minutes, 5.6080 seconds in Friday’s qualifying for provisional pole position for Sunday’s Bathurst 1000. It was 1.2 seconds clear of Murphy’s time, which he laid down for pole position in the 2003 Top 10 shootout.

While most drivers agree that that lap will always be the greatest, Coulthard was still proud of his efforts. “To have the outright qualy lap record at the moment is pretty cool, I’m not going to lie,” Coulthard said.

Coulthard tops qualifying

BY ROJE ADAIMY V8 Supercars championship leader Jamie Whincup will start Sunday’s Bathurst 1000 from the back of the grid after crashing out during qualifying.

The Red Bull Racing star slid into a concrete barrier at Mount Panorama with 20 minutes left in yesterday afternoon’s session.

The incident caused significant damage to his Holden Commodore, ending his chances of a place in the Top 10 shootout.

Holden’s Fabian Coulthard took provisional pole position amid the drama, smashing the official lap record in the process.

His time of two minutes, 5.6080 seconds slashed more than a second off Greg Murphy’s famous Lap of the Gods (2:06.8594) set in 2003.

Coulthard was followed by the Commodores of Shane van Gisbergen and Dale Wood, with Ford’s defending Bathurst champion Mark Winterbottom fourth quickest.

Whincup’s lap time before the crash has him 25th on the grid, only ahead of Ford Performance Racing’s David Reynolds who was also involved in a heavy crash.

“My error,” Whincup said.

His campaign didn’t get off to a great start, finishing 17th in practice on Thursday in a car his engineer labelled “almost undriveable”.

But he bounced back in the final practice session before qualifying yesterday, clocking the third fastest time of the day.

Whincup has conquered the Mountain four times and is aiming for a record sixth V8 Supercars title this year.

Despite the incident, Dumbrell remained upbeat about their chances of still claiming the 2014 Bathurst title.

“We’re not ruling out ourselves out of the race,” he said.

“We know the car will be strong.

“The team here at will get the car right and we’ll certainly make sure we get it right tomorrow morning.

“What a great story it would be to come through and be competitive on Sunday.

“It’s not over, we’ve just got to make sure we keep our heads up and keep smiling.”

Time to do battle with the mountain T he Great Race.

On again, this weekend, for the umpteenth edi-

tion.

Craig Lowndes, who has won the thing four times so knows a little bit about it all, said this week that the AFL and NRL had had their finals; now it was the turn of the V8s, and he and every other driver regarded this race as the pinnacle of their season, the one they all aimed for, all year.

While every version of the event has its moments, heroes and incidents, the 70s and 80s, those were the halcyon days.

Anything could happen, and usually did.

Nowadays, with the rules keeping teams and cars so tightly reined in, there will never again be scope for the likes of Godzilla to come along and upset applecarts quite so completely.

But by the late 90s the race had developed into the pure Ford v Holden confrontation, you were either in the blue or the red corner, there was no middle ground.

As for so many fans throughout two countries, Bathurst Sunday always inspired a ritual to be followed.

A whole Sunday, looked forward to for months, stocked up on the Saturday with cartons of jars from the MSA or stacks of crates from the Alford Forest Road bottle store (and if supplies ran out, a quick trip out to Chertsey; no Sunday trading back in the day, Ed Smith must have done his best trading day for the year).

Food taken care of with fish and chips from the Tinwald Fish Supply, best in town, or burgers from the Rangitira - no sign of Indian, Thai, Chinese or even the Colonel back then - and no sober drivers required; a different attitude reigned to certain driving activities in those days.

Always a very fuzzy Monday morning, with one or two minor memory gaps about insignificant details, like who won the thing.

But raceday - you could just about smell the petrol fumes, the crowd roaring as the cars flew down The Dipper and charged into Conrod, the atmosphere, as

the super-heavyweight names of Australian motorsport fought it out; Bob Jane, Colin Bond, Allan Moffat, John Goss, Jim Richards, Dick Johnson, Allan Grice, Larry Perkins (Larry is still going around; how good is that!! he must be at least 90 years old) and the undisputed master - Peter Perfect.

First sighted way back in 1969, the man whose name is indelibly imprinted on the race (and the trophy all the drivers are striving for) has scored not one, but two hat-tricks on the mountain. That’s just not gonna happen again, ever.

Peter Brock’s name is forever synonymous with the Torana XU-1, developed to counter the mighty Phase-3 Falcon GTHO, and he finished up with nine wins, the last coming in

1987 in a Commodore, all his cars wearing the now-famous 05 number.

Brock tragically died in a rally crash in Western Australia.

The history of the race is littered with great names and marques that took part.

While this year sees Volvo, Mercedes and Nissan lining up on the grid to challenge the big Aussie V8 duopoly, it should be noted that they are all already on the honours board, as is Jaguar (the incredible V12 XJ-S), BMW and Morris (yes, the tiny Cooper S held off all the big guns in 1966, ironically driven by a man named Holden).

And to start it all off, in the Armstrong 500 in 1960, a Vauxhall Cresta took the checkered flag (good cars eh Grahame?)

So its only hours till start time, and there’s quite a gaggle of Kiwis on the grid, from new boy Scott McLaughlin to veteran Greg Murphy having another go.

Who knows, there may be a flying Kiwi on the podium, or even a quinella!

Sangster racing for cup berth Three-time Group One winner Sangster’s $A3 million Gr.1 Caulfield Cup hopes go on the line in today’s Gr.2 $A200,000 Herbert Power Stakes.

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained sixyear-old Savabeel gelding sits at number 23 in the order of entry for the cup on Saturday week, five places short of being assured a start.

However, success in today’s Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield would see Sangster exempt from ballot and seal a start in one of Melbourne’s big-three races of the spring.

“I’m picking there will be a couple that will drop out after this weekend’s racing, but if he wins he’s exempt from ballot anyway,” Busuttin said.

“To be honest, if he can’t win on Saturday, he can’t win the Caulfield Cup and we’d probably look at the Moonee Valley Cup a week later and then work toward the Melbourne Cup. “At this stage he’s 26th in order and they start 24 so he’s almost guaranteed to get a run.

“With the Europeans, we’ve got to be realistic and it would be hard to say he could win, but he’s good enough to acquit himself well.”

I Do in today’s $80,000 Rich Hill Stud Taranaki Breeders Stakes is such a race, which trainer Allan Sharrock will be extra keen to win after the death of his father, Bob, on Wednesday following a period of ill health.

I Do sits on a rating of 108, fully 10 points higher than the next on the list, Pussy O’Reilly.

Allan Sharrock has a remarkable record in setting his best horses for feature races and I Do’s group one first and second on the opening two days of the Hastings Spring Carnival showed what she is capable of.

With regular rider Opie Bosson on the sideline from last week, I Do will be ridden by Jonathan Riddell, who knows the mare well.

She looks to have drawn perfectly at No 5 and there will be plenty prepared to take the short odds the TAB is guaranteed to post about the grey mare’s chances.

New Zealand log export prices lift

By Tina Morrison New Zealand export log prices have lifted from a two-year low as Chinese importers resume buying and local returns are bolstered by a decline in the New Zealand dollar and cheaper shipping costs.

The average wharf gate price for New Zealand A-grade logs fell to $76 a tonne in July, the

lowest since April 2012, but have since recovered to $80 a tonne in August and $88 a tonne in September, according to Agrifax’s monthly survey of exporters, forest owners and sawmills. This month’s survey, which is still being collated, is also likely to show a gain, Agrifax said.

Chinese importers have resumed log buying after a glut

of inventories on Chinese ports pushed down prices. China is New Zealand’s largest log market and wood is the nation’s third-largest commodity export. New Zealand returns in the past two months have been bolstered by a decline in the value of the kiwi and cheaper shipping charges as a result of increased capacity.

The more information and predictability the better, which is why the NZ sharemarket lifted after our General Election result. In particular, the electricity companies surged in value.

In fact, the NZ sharemarket drifted from 10th March when the election date was set, until the election result of 20th September.

In the weeks preceding the election the market rose as polls were indicating a “business as usual” result for the National party, but volumes of shares traded were low.

On the first trading day after the election 5,000,000 shares traded in Mighty River Power, versus around a 500,000 daily average in the weeks prior to the election.

The world is not predictable and there is always the next issue to worry about.

As part of a broader plan to improve mobile services to the regions, Spark has switched on 4G at its central site in Ashburton, giving customers easy access to “city speeds” on the Spark network.

Big store on a mission?

t’ll be a big store with a big price tag, a big wage bill and a big impact on the local economy – and it comes with a big dose of supermarket industry intrigue.

Progressive Enterprises’ proposed new $20 million Countdown store for South Street is proof-positive Ashburton District is growing and is attractive to big investment.

It will bring new jobs, new spending, new pay packets and a new, concrete example of the optimism that has underpinned Ashburton’s growth over the past few years.

It will also bring heightened competition. Consultants say there is sufficient demand for another 1430sq m of grocery space in the district: the new supermarket will be 4200sq m.

This means Progressive is taking a punt in building a supermarket that might under-perform for many years and prompts the obvious observation that Ashburton might not need such a big supermarket, now.

But the answer as to why a big company would take a calculated risk might be linked to a plot of land Foodstuffs bought in 2013, and which it has since confirmed could be home to another new supermarket.

The figures consultants used to measure grocery space show there might only be good, sustainable room for one big supermarket if the market stays as it is now.

So, it makes sense that Progressive would keep its East Street Countdown open. It might have two stores competing with each other, but that also makes it harder for the competition.

The new supermarket is just down the road from the Tinwald Super Value and just around the corner from New World. Local Four Square stores will also be wary of a new “destination” supermarket.

Planners will also be wary of what the development might do to the central business area and, for businesses, concern about southward drift might be tempered by more people having more reason to be there.

If it goes ahead, the new supermarket will have a lasting impact on Ashburton, even if it does not herald a new era in supermarket competition and growth.

The countdown for change has started.

YOUR VIEW Thanking supporters I’m a big rugby fan of Mid Canterbury and have been going to watch Mid Canterbury play for the past 10 years, ever since I moved to Ashburton.

They play some great running rugby.

Young players look up to our Mid Canterbury team. There’s only one thing I would like to see at games, home or away, and other Heartland teams do it, and that’s after games go over and thank your supporters, just to say thanks for coming and getting behind them.

Some go all out with face paint wigs and putting Mid Canterbury colours on and making flags.

I’m a bit old for that but it’s great to see them on the hill every week, wet or fine. It’s not much but would mean a lot.

Good luck for the next few weeks, with big games coming

A

s a child, hearing stories about Britain and Europe at war, what stayed with me the most were not the horrors, although they certainly weren’t erased, but the goodness that shone through.

Stories of the people who risked their own lives to save or help others, and those who held out their hands in comfort and support, stay in my mind.

They were the people who fed, hid or otherwise helped those at the greatest risk, often putting their own lives on the line in the process.

The past six weeks have been sombre and scary ones for Ashburton residents. Much of the town was in lock-down as the events of September 1 unfolded.

There were those who

weren’t specifically locked down, who huddled behind their curtains and waited.

They may not have waited specifically for a gunman, but there is little doubt that they knew fear in their own homes and workplaces.

I don’t recall Ashburton people I know being fearful in that way, even when Constable

decides someone needs that care, and what residential services are available for them?

More and more often we hear of people who have committed crimes and are unfit to plead.

So where do they go? They often end up in a prison system which is ill-equipped to deal with the mentally ill.

We have farewelled our dead

I don’t recall Ashburton people I know being fearful in that way

Vince Nolan was shot while on watch-house duty in the old police station in Mona Square in the early 70s.

I’ve heard several people question why the gunman hadn’t been in psychiatric care since he was apparently noticeably angry and unstable.

The question there is, who

as best we know how.

But let’s not forget there are other Winz victims who live with the memories and the horrors of that day.

Understandably, the family of the seriously wounded staff member has asked for privacy, and I hope we continue to demonstrate our respect by sticking

with that.

In addition to her injuries there will be the memories.

That’s true too for those who were on the scene and physically saw and heard the entire bloody affair.

Despite their lack of visible wounds, they will live with the memories of September 1 for the rest of their lives.

They are heroes too.

They may have been taken cakes and flowers, but in time memories fade and it will be easy for those of us who weren’t there to believe the victims have put it to the back of their minds.

But it just doesn’t work like that. The memories will be with them forever.

Can we take heed of the community spirit demonstrated in previous tragedies to get behind them and show that Ashburton too, can be a caring and loving place.

Not just for today, but for as long as it is needed.

And the survivors are the ones who decide when or if the need is over.

I

n January of this year my wife and I shifted into this wonderful community of Ashburton and the end of this year marks 15 years of ministry as a pastor in The Salvation Army.

It is 15 years of serving God, and leading congregations in various places around New Zealand.

Recently I have had the opportunity to engage in a reflection process, taking time to look back and evaluate the past 15 years of ministry while preparing myself for the next period of time.

This is not too dissimilar to what we all have been doing in the lead up to the election.

We’ve paused, reflected and have considered where we have come from and what has been offered, and then many of us went to the polls to vote for the people who we believe will lead New Zealand in the direction we wish to go.

What I have discovered is that this reflection is a very healthy process to engage in.

reflect upon my physical wholeness; have I developed healthy practices toward health and nutrition, fitness, recreation and rest.

Am I taking the time to look after my physical body to the very best of my ability?

I’ve reflected upon social wholeness, considering my relationships with other people. Family members, friends, colleagues and social networks are but some of the key words used to help me focus. Am I treating other people the way I wish to be treated? I think there is something in the Bible that speaks of this. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Luke 6:31 The next stage was to focus on intellectual wholeness. We are such a diverse people and yes I am wired up a certain way, but that is no excuse for not pursuing healthy attitudes,

reading well, managing my time appropriately along with developing leadership and problemsolving techniques.

The next reflection area was emotional wholeness and I was challenged with concepts of self-awareness, healthy processing of emotions, emotional strength and maturity, along with intimacy and balance.

The last aspect to this reflection was in that area of spiritual wholeness with key phrases like; intimacy with God, effective prayer life, engagement in the word of God, do I carry a sense of meaning, purpose and calling to the ministry that God has called me to.

It is often hard to put yourself under the spotlight for sincere and honest reflection with the hope of making some adjustments to my life and ministry.

But this reflection has highlighted many areas where I can celebrate and others where I perhaps need to tweak a few things that would improve my overall effectiveness as a member of this community. I seek to make the next stage of my

life even better than the past 15 years.

Have you taken the time to reflect on your life? Maybe the headings that I have used could assist you to consider your life and perhaps even make some adjustments where necessary.

Am I there yet? Have I arrived? No I haven’t. But perhaps we could journey through this life together making the best of every opportunity and situation that comes our way.

As I further reflect, during the election campaign, there was a lot of mudslinging and dirty politics, and perhaps it was a dirty campaign.

I just wonder if we all took an honest look at our own lives, considered how we could do better, what a difference we could all make. Maybe even apply that verse from the Bible to our own lives and see what happens. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Ebola the next Aids?

By Kerry Sheridan A top US health official has urged swift action to prevent the deadly ebola virus from becoming the next Aids epidemic, while a Spanish nurse was at “serious risk” of dying.

Teresa Romero, 44, is “very ill and her life is at serious risk as a consequence of the virus”, Madrid’s regional president Ignacio Gonzalez told parliament.

She is the first person known to have been infected with ebola outside Africa.

The United Nations chief, meanwhile, called for a 20-fold increase in the world’s response to the spread of ebola, which has killed nearly 3900 people in West Africa since the beginning of the year.

Ebola’s spillover into the US and Europe has raised fears of a wider outbreak, and led the US, Canada and Britain to start tougher airport screening of passengers arriving from West Africa.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted the number of cases could mount to 1.4 million by January unless strong measures are taken to contain the disease, which is spread though close contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person.

“We have to work now so that it is not the world’s next Aids,” CDC director Tom Frieden told the heads of the United Nations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund gathered in Washington.

“I would say that in the 30 years I’ve been working in public health, the only thing like this has been Aids,” he added, warning of a “long fight” ahead.

other people - mostly health staff - who had been in contact with her for the duration of the 21-day ebola incubation period.

Thirteen other people are in quarantine at the hospital as a precaution, including Romero’s husband and several health workers, according to the latest tally from the hospital.

Among those admitted on Thursday were two hairdressers who had contact with Romero.

One of ebola’s latest victims is Thomas Eric Duncan, the first patient cared for in the US to die of the disease.

Duncan was the first person diagnosed of ebola in the US and the first to die in a US hospital of the haemorrhagic fever that has killed 3900 in West Africa this year.

officials ordered increased screening at five major airports in Atlanta, Chicago, New Jersey, New York and Washington.

French Health Minister Marisol Touraine said she was working with the authorities in countries badly affected by ebola “to see in which conditions we can reinforce departure controls”.

Britain said it would start “enhanced screening” of people coming from ebola-hit parts of West Africa at Heathrow and Gatwick airports and on Eurostar trains from Belgium and France.

The European Commission was expected to meet on October 17 to discuss possible new ways to monitor passengers arriving from any affected countries.

by the ebola outbreak - to postpone nationwide elections.

Almost three million voters had been due to go to polling stations on Tuesday, but organisers said there was no way a “mass movement, deployment and gathering of people” could go ahead without endangering lives.

In Guinea, global aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres said a surge of ebola cases had pushed its treatment unit in the capital Conakry to its “physical limits”.

Speaking to the UN, World Bank and IMF chiefs in Washington, Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma assailed the global response to the epidemic thus far, saying it was moving more slowly than the spread of the disease.

“This slower-than-the-virus response needs to change,” he said.

The decision deepened the political crisis convulsing the Asian financial hub, with the failure of talks expected to reinvigorate mass rallies that

have paralysed parts of the city for nearly two weeks.

Demonstrators are calling for Beijing to grant the former British colony full democracy and for the city’s Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to resign.

Under plans unveiled by China in August, Hong Kongers will be able to vote for Leung’s

successor in 2017, but only two to three vetted candidates will be allowed to stand - something detractors have dismissed as a “fake democracy”.

Student leaders yesterday blamed the government for pulling out of talks, and insisted they were still open to finding a middle ground.

A Japanese court has ordered Google to delete search results linking the claimant to a crime he did not commit, the latest in a series of rulings around the world on what search engines should tell users. The Tokyo District Court this week placed a provisional order that Google delete about half of 237 entries that appear after the plaintiff’s name is entered, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and other local media reported. The man requested the injunction in June, arguing that these search results suggest he was involved in a crime and that this constitutes a threat to his current way of life and compromises his privacy.

Murderer missing Police have released an updated image of a missing killer who absconded from a mental health facility in Western Australia.

Samuel Mark Walsh, 38, otherwise known as Enoch Samuel Wright, has not been seen since Sunday when he failed to return from an authorised leave of absence to his accommodation at Romily House, a low-security hostel for people with chronic mental illness. Walsh was found not guilty in March 2007 of murdering his mother at her Kalgoorlie home two years earlier.

Korean leader absent North Korean leader Kim JongUn has apparently missed a key political event, extending a month-long absence that has fuelled rampant speculation about his physical and political health, although South Korea believes he remains in full control. Kim was not listed by the state KCNA news agency as being among the officials who made an annual pilgrimage yesterday to the mausoleum in Pyongyang housing the remains of his father and grandfather.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the attack as “our September 11”. Ross Taylor, of the WA-based Indonesia Institute, says it’s a day to make a commitment to living better and closer as a community.

We are seeking a Field Research Technician. The position is based at our office in Ashburton.

In order to support recent growth, the company now requires this new Crop Administration and Logistics position which will be based in Ashburton. The role is focused on our Oilseeds and Arable Foods divisions. Much loved wife of Ken for 65 years.
