NZ Post moves to calm storm BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
As community outrage mounts over the closure of the Allenton PostShop and Kiwibank outlet, New Zealand Post has moved to reassure customers postal services will remain in Allenton. But New Zealand Post has stopped short of confirming exactly what services it would continue to offer, how and where from. Allenton’s PostShop and Kiwibank branch will close in the coming weeks, news which prompted an angry response from many in the community, concerned about how the town’s one remaining PostShop would handle the change. But Jon Andrews, New Zealand Post general manager franchise and agency network, said yesterday they were committed to continuing to provide services in the Allenton area, including a PO Box lobby for PO Box customers, an ATM and most postal services. “It’s too early to say exactly what services will be provided or where they will be provided over and above the ones we have mentioned. “It depends on how successful the search
for a suitable replacement business is and what is agreed.” Allenton PostShop and Kiwibank owner Brian Collins will shut the doors in a few weeks after New Zealand Post and Kiwibank told him about four weeks ago they were pulling out of Allenton. For a man who wanted to retire and had been trying to sell the business, it left him with no option but to close. Posts on the Guardian’s Facebook page yesterday indicated people were not happy with the move and yesterday, Mr Collins didn’t even have time to come to the phone he was so busy, with many loyal customers coming in to offer support. Some even offered to start a petition. Mr Andrews said New Zealand Post would communicate with its customers about progress. “The branch is closing because the owners are retiring. “Since being informed of this, New Zealand Post has looked for a suitable local business to provide services on our behalf, but we have not found one within the timeframe. We will continue to look. The result of this search will determine where and how services will be provided in the future.”
