Bins – but in 2017 BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Wheelie bins are coming – but not yet. The Ashburton District Council has put forward rubbish collection options, asked for public comment, listened to submissions and discovered that the community is divided when it comes to rubbish. But yesterday it came up with a solution. After listening to a handful of submitters speak for and against bins and bags, councillors opted for wheelie bins but they’ve delayed their introduction until 2017. At yesterday’s hearings the elderly were on one side pitching for the status quo of the plastic rubbish bag they say has served the district well for years. They couldn’t see any reason to change; they didn’t want to pay a cent more for their collection. And on the other side were the people who wanted what most other communities had - wheelie bins. In between there were the don’t cares, the disinterested and a large group who were unsure or who wanted a bit

of both. The council received more than 880 written submissions on its three kerbside collection options with the weight firmly in favour of wheelie bins for rubbish, and recycling and green crates for glass. That was the option the council also favoured. It wasn’t the option Jim Lawton wanted. “These wheelie bins will cost a lot of money and the collection trucks aren’t cheap. The cheapest option is the best for ratepayers. Stick with what we’ve got. These grandiose ideas are good but we can’t afford them,” he said. Recycling experts, however, supported a switch to wheelie bins as long as the glass crate was retained. Sharon Breakwell from the Wastebusters Trust wanted a bag and bin option, while independent expert Sheryl Stivens said dealing with litter rather than cost should be the council’s driver and that meant wheelie bins and a good public education programme. The wheelie bin recommendation will be signed off by council on October 30.

Father wins Oz record quiz show prize A Melbourne father has forgiven his teenage son for going behind his back and entering him on a quiz show after he pocketed more than half a million dollars. Dougal Richardson won $535,000 on Million Dollar Minute but only because his 14-year-old son George entered him on the Seven Network quiz show without his permission. Richardson’s massive windfall is believed to be the biggest ever win in the history of Australian afternoon game shows. Known to family and friends as Dougal the Human Google because of his wealth of general knowledge, Richardson said he knew nothing about the entry until the quiz show’s producers came calling. “My son, George, took it upon himself to enrol me to go on Million Dollar Minute while I was at work,” Richardson said in a statement released by Seven. “He didn’t ask for my permission and he then took on a coaching role and appointed himself as my manager. I would never have gone on the show or won a cent if it wasn’t for my son. Now that I’ve actually won all this money, George has informed me he is entitled to at least 10 per cent commission!” The Elsternwick resident opted not to shoot for the million dollar top prize. He left the show yesterday after the $500,000 jackpot round and with $35,500 he had accumulated during the series.

For millions of impatient fans around the world, the December 2015 release date for the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy is a distant date in a galaxy far, far away. But while there is more than a year to go before the return of one of the most iconic franchises in movie history, Disney is already reaping rewards from its acquisition of George Lucas’ beloved science-fiction saga. Disney bought Lucas’ Lucasfilm in October 2012 and with it the rights to add the likes of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader to the company’s cast of iconic characters. While the headlinegrabbing centrepiece of the deal was a commitment to make a new trilogy of Star Wars blockbusters, Disney is already generating returns from an avalanche of associated products ranging from spin-off television shows to toy light sabres. The animated series Star Wars Rebels premiered in the US last week while a videogame for smartphones and tablets Star Wars Commander was rolled out in August. Disney has also announced plans for a “far greater Star Wars presence” in its global chain of theme parks. The new Star Wars film due next year will be directed by J J Abrams, one of Hollywood’s A-list directors who recently oversaw the successful rebooting of the Star Trek franchise.

SBW new face of Just Jeans Sports star Sonny Bill Williams has been named as the new face of well-known clothing label Just Jeans. The 29-year-old, who flew in from Australia a few days ago, was in Auckland yesterday taking part in a photo shoot for the label’s Summer ‘14 campaign; which officially launches today. Dressed in a casual white shirt and denim three-quarter jean pants, the sports star said being involved with the label was a nod to what was most unique about the Kiwi style - cool and casual. “It’s just simple wear that I know that I would wear. I’ve always been a jeans and Chucks person and I used to shop at Just Jeans when I was younger, so when the opportunity came up, I was pretty excited to be involved,” he said. Williams will today play for Counties Manukau, coached by All Black legend Tana Umaga, against Auckland in the ITM Cup competition.

■ WINZ TRAGEDY

Tully remanded in custody Ashburton double murder accused Russell John Tully has been returned to prison without plea, following a brief appearance in High Court in Christchurch yesterday morning. He stood silently in the dock while Justice David Gendall remanded him in custody on two counts of murder, two of attempted murder, theft, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and setting a mantrap with intent to injure. The more serious charges were laid on September 2; the

the shooting. Tully also faces theft charges relating to stealing a mountain bike, a leather jacket, and various grocery items on August 24. He was in possession of the bike when police captured him on farmland near Lake Hood at about 5.30pm on September 1. At his last High Court appearance on September 23, Justice Christian Whata remanded Tully into secure custody at Hillmorton Hospital for a psychiatric report to be completed.

day after Tully allegedly entered the Ashburton Work and Income office carrying a shotgun, shooting dead Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland, shooting Lindy Curtis in the leg and firing at Kim Adams as she fled the building. All four women were Work and Income employees. At the time he was reportedly homeless, and living rough in the Ashburton riverbed, where he is alleged to have set the mantrap in an attempt to evade capture in the hours following

Yesterday defence counsel Phil Shamy told the court the report had now been completed and agreed to Crown prosecutor Nicola Pointer’s request for the case to be reviewed on November 25. A case review is the automatic next step as the matter proceeds towards a High Court trial, where no pleas have been entered. Suppression orders imposed by Justice Whata remain in place.

Future of former Winz site remains unclear By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theGuardian.co.nz

To a casual passer-by, the white building on the corner of Cass and Moore streets barely warrants a second glance. It looks derelict, abandoned. There is no indication of its past. But a second glance tells a story. There are bouquets of flowers, messages on cards and a lone security guard is standing, watching, waiting. For years the building was home to Ministry of Social Development (MSD) staff from Work and Income New Zealand and Child, Youth and Families services. Over the years it became much more, a social room was built and the facility was used by the wider community. All of that ended on September 1 when Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland were shot to death while they were working, Lindy Curtis was injured and attempts were made to shoot a fourth Winz staffer. A commitment was made by MSD that the building would not be reopened as its offices. Ashburton College has be-

come a temporary base of CYF services and in December this service will move into a portacom on the Ashburton Police Station site, joining Winz staff who will be based there from the middle of next month. The future of the Cass Street building, however, is unclear. It is owned by a retired Ashburton couple who have been left with a property that no one

currently wants to use. The building would cost up to $2 million to build today and while it represents a community tragedy it also represents a lost investment for its owners. They’re not a big corporate that could absorb the loss, they’re private individuals. Occupancy was on a rolling three-year lease to the MSD, due in January. The owners

have no surety their tenants will renew and they know they could be left with an empty building. They say they cannot walk away from their investment, nor is it appropriate to seek new tenants. They have owned the Cass Street property for many years and say it was fitted out to suit its MSD tenants.

Financial appeal for victims’ families An appeal to provide a financial backstop for the families of victims of the Work and Income shootings on September 1 has reached more than $8700. With people signalling they wanted to do something to help the families of victims Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland who were killed in the building and Lindy Curtis who was injured, the Ashburton District Council initiated a community appeal. This was run under the umbrella of charitable organisation the Ashburton Benevolent Fund. A bank account was opened at Westpac. A condolence book was also made available in the council foyer. Both provided avenues for the community to show their caring and their concern for the victims’ families, Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said. The Ashburton Benevolent Fund was established in 1998 under the umbrella of the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation to both provide financial assistance to people in need and to act as an agent for community fundraising appeals. Contributions to the appeal can be made online or at any Westpac branch: Account name: The Ashburton Victims Fund Account number: 03-08350342252-00

■ BACTERIAL DISEASE OUTBREAK

Local struck down with illness BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

One Ashburton person is among over 100 confirmed to have been struck down by a rare illness linked to eating vegetables. Shop or supermarket bought lettuce and bagged carrots may be the source of the bacterial disease outbreak. Yersinia pseudotuberculosis causes stomach cramps and can present symptoms that mimic appendicitis. From September 1 until Monday there was 101 confirmed cases, with 38 hospitalised. Eighty-six of the cases have been notified, the bulk of which have been in Canterbury, including the Ashburton case. The Canterbury District Health Board said about 15 of the Canterbury cases

had required hospital care, but the board was not able to offer any further information about the Ashburton case. Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey said investigations had indicated cases had been in the 20 to 50-year age group, with generally even gender distribution. Dr Humphrey said preliminary investigations had implicated shop or supermarket bought lettuce and bagged carrots. He advised consumers to discard these items from their fridges if they were more than a fortnight old, and wash their hands thoroughly after toileting. Patients present with abdominal pain, with or without diarrhoea. The disease has a three to 21-day incubation period. “In most cases people will experience

severe abdominal cramping which they will make a full recovery from within several days,” Dr Humphrey said. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is investigating the source, and believes food is the likely cause. But senior communications advisor Jim Flack said it was too early to direct people away from foods that had no proven risk for consumers, and the investigation was over a range of foods. “The people who have become ill with Yersinia have been interviewed on what foods they have been eating and this information has been cross-referenced, giving us sources to investigate further,” Mr Flack said. Yersinia outbreaks are rare and person to person spread is uncommon.

HOW TO AVOID IT ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Apply normal food safety practice. If it looks off or smells off, throw it out. Keep fresh food chilled and wash fruit and vegetables before eating. Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat. Only use pasteurised milk or milk products. Wash hands with soap and water. Carefully clean all cutting boards, counter-tops and utensils with soap and hot water after preparing raw meat. Dispose of animal faeces in a sanitary manner. See your doctor, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice if you think you might have symptoms.

■ CHRISTMAS SEASON

Hunt on for new jolly red man BY DAISY HUDSON

DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

With the silly season approaching, Ashburton stores are on the lookout for someone to step up and don the famous red suit. An ad recently appeared online searching for the perfect Santa to entertain Ashburton shoppers during the Christmas season, and according to Lowie Recruitment consultant and Santa co-ordinator Sharn Baker, finding the right Santa can be hard. “I just want to get someone good, someone who loves the spirit of Christmas,” she said. Ashburton has a long tradition of local Saint Nicks, with one regular approaching his 58th year of suiting up for the cause. The long-serving Santa, who did not want to be identified, first took on the role of Father Christmas in 1956, and said he enjoyed spreading holiday cheer

at various Christmas functions and events. “I do it for the sake of the kids,” he said. He first put on the beard and red suit at the Ashburton Gun Club, and he would hand out lollies and fizzy drinks to people in the community. Fast forward more than half a decade, and he was still bringing Christmas joy to the Ashburton community. “I’ll do it as long as I’m able to,” he said.

There had been plenty of demand for Santas in Ashburton, and the experienced Father Christmas said he had done as many as 59 appearances in one year, with up to five in one day. While taking on the iconic role could be difficult, he believed there were three qualities that were very important for any aspiring Santa to have. “They’ve gotta have a good sense of humour, a love for Christmas, and plenty of patience,” he said.

The Art of Holding a Great Conversation The art of conversation comes easy to Arthur Junqueira Verardo, thanks to an intensive English Language course at Aoraki Polytechnic.

Arthur came to New Zealand in April to play a season for the Geraldine Rugby Club.

The Brazilian started the four week programme speaking only a few phrases of English. Upon graduation he can hold a great conversation.

“The course was also good for me because on a farm there are only the cows to talk to,’’ he joked.

Even he was surprised at his success. “When I started I could only say a few things – like where to get food. Now I’m able to have a real conversation. “The course was great for me. It taught me a lot about English grammar and how to understand the Kiwi accent. The teachers were very kind and supportive. “I also made a lot of friends. I met people from all over the world and from many different cultures.’’

He is currently living with a friend on a farm in Geraldine.

Back home, the 24-year-old has a business management degree and works in the field of human research. His newly learned English language skills would prove invaluable in his job. “I work with huge companies all over the world. I really need to be able to speak English. “And all the people my age in Brazil can speak English. Everything seems to be in English, like the internet (for example).’’ Arthur came to New Zealand after meeting a Kiwi while playing rugby in Brazil. He has loved his time here, and as a bonus his rugby team came third in the competition.

Hones wants recount Mana leader Hone Harawira has applied to the Electoral Commission for a recount of votes in the Te Tai Tokerau seat. His party was concerned about the large number of rejected votes in the electorate, which Labour’s Kelvin Davis won by a majority of 739 votes. Party president Lisa McNab said Mana wanted “independent scrutiny of the processes by which hundreds of votes were discarded”. The Electoral Commission said the recount would take place in the electorate’s returning office in Auckland, overseen by District Court Judge Tom Broadmore. It was expected to take three to five days, and would delay the official allocation of list MPs, possibly until next week. - APNZ

■ ASHBURTON RUBBISH COLLECTION

Wheelie bins ‘a nightmare’ BY SUE NEWMAN

WHAT WAS ON THE TABLE

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Wheelie bins in central Ashburton would be a nightmare for businesses with no street front and those based on upper levels of buildings, says businessman Kelvin Holmes. He was one of a small number of submitters who spoke to Ashburton District councillors about its kerbside collection review and suggested the council should create several collection points that could be used by the public and small businesses. This could include recycling, glass and rubbish bins, Mr Holmes said. “It would be much better to have these in one place rather than to have rubbish bags and bins up and down the street.” Wheelie bins were simple and they were the smart solution in residential areas, but they weren’t the ultimate answer in the CBD, he said. Smaller businesses would be happy with rubbish bags that they could take to a central collection point that also provided recycling options, Mr Holmes said. Yesterday district councillors listened to submitters speak for and against changes to the district’s kerbside rubbish collec-

tion and the three options it is putting forward. Wheelie bins and glass crates, council assets information office Craig Goodwin said, were proven to see a 30 per cent increase in material diversion at the kerbside. This translated into savings on landfill costs for the council, he said. Mr Goodwin also suggested that people in units could share wheelie bins rather than have half filled bins sitting around for weeks. Because several submitters were concerned that wheelie bins weren’t in the spirit of user pays, councillor Darryl Nelson said Ashburton could

adopt a scheme used in Nelson where pre-paid tags had to be attached to a wheelie bin before it would be collected. The councillors opted for a wheelie bin system that includes a 240 litre bin for recycling and a glass crate collected fortnightly and an 80 litre rubbish bin collected weekly. While the kerbside rubbish contract expires at the end of June next year, the councillors recommended the council hold off making the change to wheelie bins until 2017 to allow funding for the change to be built into council budgets. This recommendation will be put to the full council on October 30.

Whangarei man hit on head with blunt instrument A Whangarei father-of-three died after being hit on the head with a blunt instrument, a postmortem examination has confirmed. Michael Patrick Griffin, 56, was found with serious head injuries at his home in central Whangarei about 8am on Sunday but died in hospital yesterday.

The weatherboard home remained in lock-down late yesterday as a police team and forensic specialists combed the property for clues. Police said he was attacked between 2pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday. A post-mortem examination had established that he died of severe blunt force trauma to his head.

They asked residents in the area to look out for any foreign objects on their properties. Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said it appeared to be an unprovoked attack on Mr Griffin, who was working on his property at the time. Mr Griffin was the father of three adult sons. Mr Burke said during the

early stage of the investigation police had received a good response from the community. He urged anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area between 2pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday to contact the investigation team. Neighbours in the street said they were not surprised to see police at the property. - APNZ

■ FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Driver’s actions save elderly man By GaBrielle Stuart of the ChriStChurCh Star When Simon Taylor pulled over on a rural Mid Canterbury road to investigate an empty car left with a door open, he thought it was someone “causing mischief ”. He did not expect to see an old man who was close to hypothermia emerge from the bushes. Mr Taylor said he was driving back to his home at Rakaia Huts at about 2am on Saturday morning, after visiting his children in Christchurch. He saw a car parked “oddly” on Jollies Road, near the mouth of the Rakaia River. He said the car was empty but had its lights on and a door slightly ajar. “I thought that was a bit weird but it obviously wasn’t a crash, so I drove on another couple of kilometres. But I thought it might be someone causing mischief at the contractor’s yard just up the road,

so I turned around and went back.” Mr Taylor is a former bouncer, and said he was preparing himself to confront a group of “little ratbags up to no good”. “I definitely didn’t expect to see an elderly man emerge from the bushes.” The 78-year-old man had travelled from his home at Kumara near Greymouth, to visit his daughter in Christchuch. He left at about 2pm on Friday afternoon, and was expected to arrive that evening. His daughter called the police to report him missing at about 8pm. Mr Taylor said he believed the man had been there for several hours, after becoming lost and running out of fuel. “He wanted to get back into his own car, but he was freezing, he was wet and he was really cold. So I put him in the van and covered him up as much as I could. “By chance I had a puppy with me, so I passed him the

puppy and I gave him a peppermint and put the talkback radio on, because what old chap doesn’t like talkback?” Mr Taylor said the man was dangerously cold and incoherent when he found him. “I’m presuming he had been there for hours by how cold his clothes and his face and hands were, and his footwear was wet.” He waited there with the man for about an hour before the police arrived, and within that time no other cars went by on the road. “This is a rural area, so things don’t really kick off here until 4 or 5am. It could have been a very different story.” Mr Taylor said the puppy was the real hero of the story. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better to make him feel at ease – he just about took all the fur off it stroking it.” Police reunited the man with his daughter on Saturday, and he is believed to have returned to his home in Kumara.

Helicopter search called off All welcome at The search for a missing West Coast helicopter has been called off and will resume this morning, the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre says. Two Westpac Rescue Helicopters spent yesterday afternoon scouring an area of the Kahurangi National Park, near the Nelson ranges. The Robinson R44, carrying a pilot only, was believed to belong to Helicopter Charter Karamea. NZRCC spokesman Steve Rendle said staff would begin searching again this morning.

“The search has been finished for the day and we’ll be resuming in the morning,” he said. The missing helicopter and another chopper left Karamea about 8am yesterday to fly to Nelson for maintenance work on one of the aircraft. The alarm was raised by the pilot of the second helicopter about midday when the missing helicopter failed to arrive at the destination. “They weren’t in sight of each other during the flight and as we understand it there was no radio communication between them,” Mr Rendle said.

The search area was 25km west of Motueka. “It’s steep, bush-covered terrain. Weather conditions are clear but windy.” Garden City Rescue Helicopters general manager Simon Duncan said the helicopter had been using a tracking system, “which leaves a breadcrumb trail” every three minutes of the helicopter’s last known position, he said. There had been no sign of the missing helicopter by the time the search was suspended, he said. An emergency locator beacon had not been activated. - APNZ

■ IS MILITANTS

Govt alone to decide on IS fight By AdAm Bennett Any plan to commit New Zealand’s assistance to US led efforts against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq will likely be debated in Parliament but the ultimate decision is the Government’s alone, Prime Minister John Key says. Mr Key has not ruled sending the SAS to Iraq but yesterday said he was likely to get advice on the options for New Zealand’s assistance this week. His executive would make a decision over what to do in the next couple of weeks but not at the first Cabinet meeting. He said New Zealand’s decision would likely pre-empt any

formal US request for particular assistance. “My preference would be to move to a position where New Zealand determines what it’s going to do if anything and then takes those steps as opposed to someone particularly asking us to do things.” The process of making that decision “could lead to a parliamentary debate” and Mr Key said it would be his preference to have backing for any assistance from across the House, “although often it will depend on what steps that we took on who was likely to join us”. “In a Parliament that’s as diverse as our one you’re probably never going to get every politi-

cal party and Member of Parliament supporting whatever steps you take.” He said the decision was ultimately for his Government to make and he wouldn’t be seeking a mandate from Parliament for any potential military assistance. Again he said sending troops to Iraq was “at outer edge of what I’d like to do”. There were “other options that were far more appropriate and realistic”. Meanwhile, any law changes around New Zealanders travelling overseas to fight should distinguish between those fighting against oppressive regimes like that of President Bashar al-Assad’s in Syria and those joining

groups guilty of war crimes or terrorism like IS, says Labour MP Phil Goff. Mr Key has signalled he will soon unveil law changes to tackle “glaring deficiencies”, around the cancellation of New Zealand based foreign fighters’ passports. He also said he wanted to reform SIS legislation, preferably with Labour’s support. Mr Goff said there would be case for strengthening legislation to deal with people intending to fight for groups guilty of war crimes and terrorism, “but you’ve got to be careful that you don’t use legislation to have a blanket suppression of those who were simply aiming to fight

alongside friends and family against an oppressive regime”. “I think you can distinguish between the two different circumstances and ought to do so.” Mr Goff also said Mr Key was offered Labour’s support for GCSB law changes last year, “ but only made a token gesture toward it” so he was sceptical that Mr Key was seeking Labour’s support for SIS legislation changes now in good faith. Labour was open to discussing improvements in the SIS legislation as long as there were safeguards provided against the abuse of power but it still wanted a wide ranging review of New Zealand’s intelligence and security apparatus. - APNZ

■ METHVEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Teacher on tech trip By dAisy Hudson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

A Methven teacher is jetting off to Sydney this week as part of an education initiative started by one of the best known companies in the world. Methven Primary School teacher Keryn Hooker has been selected as one of nine New Zealand teachers to take part in the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert programme, which will see her receive free Microsoft technology, professional development opportunities and inside involvement in research, products and programs. Mrs Hooker and other applicants from New Zealand and Australia will attend a variety of events during the trip, and the top three applicants will then be flown to Seattle. She said Microsoft was looking for people who were using its technology successfully in classrooms, and

she was selected from a pool of 19 applicants. Mrs Hooker was unsure about the itinerary for the trip, but was looking forward to being pushed out of her comfort zone. It had been a whirlwind experience for the Year 5 and 6 teacher, who believed she would not be selected and had to rush through a passport application in order to attend. “It’s really exciting,” she said. Mrs Hooker was keen to increase the amount of technology she used in the classroom, as she believed it provided a collaboration between home and school. “The kids can carry on with work at any time and send it to me when they’re done, it’s really cool,” she said. Mrs Hooker will spend the weekend in Sydney before returning just in time for the start of the next school term on Monday.

Black ribbons fly for Jack

■ LABOUR DAY RACES

Want a stake in Terror to Love? He’s one of New Zealand’s greatest race horses ever and for one day Terror to Love could be yours. That’s the pitch the Ashburton Trotting Club is selling as the big drawcard for its Labour Day meeting, where owning a share in the three times New Zealand Cup winner could be as easy as filling in a form. Terror to Love’s owner Terry McDonald decided to get generous and let locals share in the limelight that surrounds the champ. He’s competing in the Ashburton Licensing Trust free-for-all and if he wins, then one person on course that day will win also. The new shareholder will have to be on-course on the day and with a completed entry form in the barrel; from there it’s up to lady luck, said trotting club president Chris Morrison. The winner of a 2.5 per cent shareholding in the horse will have an opportunity to meet the horse, his owner and his trainers and to have photographs taken. If Terror to

Love takes his third consecutive flying stakes title, his temporary owner will share in that stake money, likely to be around

$800, Mr Morrison said. “For anyone, to have even a small share in this horse would be fantastic,” he said.

Black ribbons will be flying from truck aerials all around the country for Jack Dixon. Tauranga man Kyle Quin said he wanted to do what he could to show his support for the family of Jack Dixon who was swept out to sea on Wednesday. Mr Quin, a truck driver with Halls Transport, got in touch with his truckie friends and organised a show of support, asking drivers to display a black ribbon from their CB aerials. “I’ve got kids of my own and I’ve just got no words to tell how I feel for that family. The little fella with his All Blacks gear on just touched all of us. “We see all these car accidents and stuff all the time but this was a freak accident.” The truckies will also be shaking buckets with Jack’s picture on them for donations at key loading and unloading points such as the Port of Tauranga and the Mount Maunganui Wharf. - APNZ

■ CHESS CHAMPS

Vlad carries local hopes Some of New Zealand’s top chess players will be pitting their wits this week when Ashburton holds the 2014 South Island chess championships. Among those players will be Australian Grand Master Darryl Johansen and New Zealand representative Helen Milligan. Local hopes will be riding on Ashburton College student Vlad Barbu. There will be a sprinkling of locals competing against players from around New Zealand, including a strong contingent from Auckland. Play in the championships runs from tomorrow until Saturday, with all players competing in a round robin format over eight rounds. The rapid chess championship will be held on Sunday. The event will be held at the Hotel Ashburton and is open to the public. Play starts at 10am today.

Vlad Barbu will be flying the flag for Ashburton at this week’s South Island chess championships in Ashburton.

Son shot in gun accident A father accidentally shot his toddler son in the head with an air rifle while getting the weapon out of a wardrobe, police say. Police said the 17-month-old boy’s father was retrieving his air rifle from a bedroom wardrobe at a house in Temuka on Friday evening when the toddler appeared to have been shot in the back of the head. Sergeant Geoff McCrostie said it was too early to say if anybody would be arrested. The toddler was now in a stable condition in Auckland’s Starship children’s hospital.

Canterbury rural area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said while owners of air rifles were not required to have a firearms licence, police encouraged them to follow the requirements and rules about the safe handling of firearms. “All firearms should be stored unloaded, in a secure cabinet and when handling always treat them as if they are loaded and ensure that the barrel is pointed in a safe direction. Even though air rifles are available for purchase without a valid firearms licence, they are not toys and can cause serious harm.” - APNZ

Kakapo pecks new minister

■ ASHBURTON LAKES

Hedgehogs and cats beware

Maggie Barry’s first official act after being named the new Conservation Minister was to be pecked in the face by a worldfamous bird. The National MP yesterday had an encounter with over-eager kakapo Sirocco, the cheeky parrot which first gained notoriety for attempting to copulate on a British zoologist during filming for a BBC series. Ms Barry was not subjected to the same treatment, but almost immediately lost an earring to the large, flightless bird. “Not the face,” she told Sirocco as it pecked at her ear and chin. The bird was being hosted at Parliament to mark the 25year sponsorship of the kakapo recovery programme by New Zealand Aluminium Smelters. In a speech to an audience in the Grand Hall, Ms Barry said the company had created a blueprint for other private sponsorships of conservation programmes. - APNZ

Ashburton wildlife photographer Allan Sinclair sets a trap at the Ashburton Lakes.

BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton wildlife photographer Allan Sinclair is harnessing the power of one in order to save his subjects from predators. The self-employed landscaping contractor one year ago launched a pest trapping programme at Mid Canterbury’s iconic Ashburton Lakes. He had previously been helping out on a neighbouring programme, also at the lakes. Mr Sinclair’s area of choice has been the Maori Lakes. He has caught 17 stoats, 19 rats, 15 ferrets, 25 cats and 100 hedgehogs. “I don’t think we have the last one,” Mr Sinclair said. He has dozens of traps around the eight kilometre circumference of the

two lakes, and empties them every two to four weeks. Mr Sinclair is protecting the area’s wrybill, Australasian grebe, black swans, pied stilts, scaup and other birds. “We just want to see the birds get a fair go,” he said. Mr Sinclair said he had help from volunteers. He is a member of Ashburton branch Forest and Bird, and fellow members had helped out, as well as his family. The Department of Conservation supplied the traps. Mr Sinclair said the cats which were caught in the traps were usually tabbies, representative of feral populations which had been in the area for decades. Some of the cats were large, and he had even seen the remains of a whole black swan which he believed had been killed and eaten by a cat.

Man dies in boat fire One person died and another suffered extensive burns in a boat fire at Waiheke Island on Monday night. The fire broke out on a nine-metre launch moored near the Waiheke Boat Club on the island about 9.30pm, police said. They confirmed that one person had died in the fire and another, a man, was taken to Middlemore Hospital with burns. The boat was believed to belong to a long-time local who lived aboard the boat. A northern fire communications spokesman said the fire happened at the site on Causeway Road, Ostend. There are numerous boats in the area, some undergoing repairs. Waiheke Boating Club commodore Gerry Morgan said the fire occurred on a “live-aboard” situated near the high-

tide mark on the beach near Ostend. “It’s nothing really to do with the boat club. They just pull up on the beach. They’ve been there for years - a lot of old derelict boats and there’s quite a few people living on them. “There’s some houseboats further around the beach, there’s respectable people living on those, but there’s some real characters living on some of the other boats.” The boat was believed to have been owned by a man who had lived on his boat at the island for at least 10 years and had previously lost another boat to fire, Mr Morgan said. “It’s his friend I believe that’s died.... he normally lives on his own but there’s quite a few live-aboards which get together and have a few drinks and that from time to time.” - APNZ

OUR VIEW

Wheelie bins await Stu Oldham

EDITOR

H

urry up and wait, Mid Canterbury – with just a bit more consideration and a smidgen more time to reflect, there is an ever-so slightly more-than fair-to-middling chance that your kerbside rubbish regime could, with a good tail wind and a clear run to the finish, change. Perhaps. Ashburton District councillors yesterday listened to a handful of submissions on their kerbside collection review and ended the day with a bold and decidedly firm direction for the full council to consider: adopt a wheelie bin and recycling crate scheme but wait until 2017 to implement it. This will at once please and disappoint those submitters who urged the council to adopt a scheme that will cost more than the current system of plastic bags and crates but will likely divert 30 per cent more waste from landfill and, perhaps, make rubbish management easier for many households. They will be pleased because councillors have looked past calls to keep the relatively cheap status quo but they will be disappointed the much longer wait than many expected will leave the door open for another council to decide against spending whatever the proposal costs in three years’ time. Because that is what the proposal may face: it will almost certainly be considered as part of an all-too-distant annual plan process, and be subject to yet more submissions and debate, before it is considered for adoption by whatever new council emerges from the next local government elections. By then, the debate might be quite different. Perhaps cheaper and more environmentally friendly options will emerge; perhaps we will produce less rubbish or, perhaps, there might be more opposition to potentially costly schemes from a stillgrowing electorate of people on low, fixed incomes. Successive surveys of a district divided suggested councillors would annoy a sizeable chunk of their constituency no matter what kerbside collection regime they chose. Yesterday’s recommendation might provide a new bunch of political aspirants the exciting chance to do just that, again, in a few years’ time.

YOUR VIEW School trip queried The article in your newspaper of October 1 regarding the departure of Mr Congdon, reported that “staff and students from Ashburton College will [also] make a flying visit to Levin, travelling north to attend a powhiri to welcome Mr Congdon to Horowhenua College”. I would like to question the need to attend this powhiri in Levin. Can someone tell me how this trip is funded and how many staff and students will be attending this occasion? In the light of Mr Congdon’s brief time (5 years) as DP, I wonder if this is culturally and educationally, an extravagant use of both school funds and time. As an afterthought, are there any guidelines for such trips? A Morison

CRUMB

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan responds: Attendance at powhiri is increasingly reflective of the sort of activity undertaken in New Zealand education and the expectations of our communities. I was welcomed to Ashburton College by a whole-of-college powhiri and I was accompanied by people from the Ministry of Education, Ngai Tahu and others. It is obviously important for Horowhenua College to welcome Grant in this way and it would be inappropriate for us not to accept the invitation and escort Grant on to the school. The costs are largely met by a donation I make to the college, of a stipend I am paid in my role as a member of the University of Canterbury’s strategic advisory committee.

read in the Guardian’s 135th birthday supplement that in 1988 several hundred people packed the Holyoake Auditorium for a meeting on the district’s economic future. What a tremendous turnout. It would be fantastic if Mid Canterbury’s 20-year Strategic Economic Vision - currently out for community feedback - receives the same level of support, if not more. Having hundreds of views, suggestions and thoughts on the draft Economic Vision and how the district can develop and grow its economy and community would be hugely insightful and helpful for those who work tirelessly leading the district’s longterm prosperity. The 20-year vision makes for fascinating reading, capturing where we are as district and shaping where we want to be 20-years from now. Reading the Guardian’s old articles reminded me just how quickly the economic fortunes of a district can change. From riding the highs of the 1950s when the district was in the top 12 electorates for income level dropping to 92nd electorate out of 96 in 1988”. In the late 1980s Ashburton District was experiencing high unemployment; seven per cent of its workforce was unemployed compared to today’s low unemployment rate of 2.9 per cent - the national figure is 7.1 per cent. At the time there was concern about farming’s low profitability, businesses were closing and many young people were leaving the district seeking work opportunities. You may be asking why this is important to mention now. While our local economy has been going from strength to strength for some years we still need to plan and prepare for the future so that we can continue to prosper. This is why our Mid Canterbury Strategic Economic Vision is so important.

You have an opportunity to help shape the Vision and make sure the economic development of the district is sustainable and so that come 2034, our children and grandchildren inherit a place they can be proud of. A growing local economy means a better standard of living for everyone in our community because it tends to attract more skilled workers, health, education and social services and community facilities. Attracting new business to the district is an important part of future growth and we

need to be assisting businesses, no matter how big or small, to make the commitment to invest in Mid Canterbury. We should also be helping existing businesses who want to expand see the value in doing so here rather than looking elsewhere. We’ve a number of great businesses that’ve done that and are continuing to be very successful. The Ashburton District is very fortunate to have a dedicated Business Estate. Creating a business hub does take time and it’s wonderful a number of businesses are up and running

■ SYRIA

Battle enters Syrian town Islamic State jihadists have penetrated the key Syrian border town of Kobane, sparking street fighting with its Kurdish defenders after a three-week siege. “Urban guerilla warfare has started and the fighting is taking place for the first time in districts at the eastern entrance to Kobane, in Maqtala al-Jadida and Kani Arabane,” Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdel Rahman said yesterday. “The jihadists and the Kurds are clashing in the streets, between apartment buildings,” sending hundreds of civilians into flight towards the Turkish border, he said. Witnesses on the Turkish border reported two black Islamic State (IS) flags flying on Kobane’s eastern side yesterday. The advances came after IS fighters seized part of Mishtenur Hill, which overlooks

(YPG) fighters. In a sign of mounting desperation, a Kurdish female fighter blew herself up at an IS position east of Kobane on Monday, the Observatory said. It was the first reported instance of a female Kurdish fighter employing a tactic often

used by the jihadists, said the Britain-based monitor, which has a wide network of sources inside Syria. The bomber, in her 20s, was a full-time YPG fighter identified as Dilar Gencxemis, alias Arin Mirkan, from Kurdishcontrolled Afrin in northwestern Syria. “She killed dozens of gang members and demonstrated the YPG fighters’ determined resistance,” her group said in a statement carried by the proKurdish Firat news agency. On another front, twin IS suicide truck bombings killed at least 30 YPG fighters and security officers on Monday in the Kurdish town of Hasakeh, northeast Syria, the Observatory said. Monday’s fighting around Kobane - also known as Ain alArab - killed at least 19 Kurdish fighters and 27 IS jihadists, it added. - AFP

Slain and Mexican army disarms cooked police officers in Iguala by partner A transgender woman who was slain and reportedly cooked by her chef partner had worked hard to support her family in Indonesia, her grieving mother says. Some of Mayang Prasetyo’s remains were reportedly found boiling in a pot on the stove in a Brisbane apartment at the weekend. Ms Mayang described herself online as a high-class escort, charging up to $500 for outcalls. Her Facebook profile also says she worked as a “gender illusionist” cabaret performer. Her mother Nining Sukarni says she’s reeling from the news that her eldest child, who she refers to as her son Febri, is gone. She said Febri regularly sent money home to support his two sisters. She said Febri could be jealous and temperamental and described her alleged killer, chef Marcus Volke, as “quiet” and “submissive”. Volke, 28, is believed to have taken his own life after killing Ms Prasetyo. He reportedly fled when police arrived at the apartment and his body was found soon after in a nearby industrial bin. - AAP

Mexico’s federal forces have taken over security in a southern city where 43 students disappeared and disarmed the entire municipal police force after gang-linked officers shot at the aspiring teachers. Monte Alejandro Rubido Garcia, the national security commissioner, said the Iguala police officers will be sent to a military base to undergo evaluations while investigators check whether their guns were used in any crimes. The federal police’s new paramilitary-like gendarmerie took over public safety in the city while the army will guard Iguala’s entrances in the violence-plagued southern state of Guerrero, he said. Rubido said federal authorities will “shine light on the criminal events in the Iguala area” as well as contribute to the search for the missing students. The move came after the weekend discovery of a mass grave containing 28 unidentified bodies outside Iguala, where the students were last seen more than a week ago. Authorities say it will take at least two weeks to get the results of DNA tests to identify the corpses found about 200 kilometres south of Mexico

Power answers sought swered include what caused the loss of supply or contributed to it including potentially systemic factors such as risk management systems and asset health monitoring and maintenance practices, network design and regulatory incentives and controls. What fire hazard mitigation systems were in place and whether they operated as intended is also to be looked into along with what actions were taken during the outage to ensure the safety of people and equipment, to communicate with those affected, and to mitigate the loss of supply and restoration. Finally, the minister also wants to know what actions will be taken or are recommended as a result of the outage to improve the resilience of power supplies and management of outages. Separately, the Electricity Authority said its review will consider any physical, procedural or behavioural causes of the outage to ensure that any lessons learnt are acted on, with the results going to the minister by April 30, 2015 and publicly available soon after. “We need to understand the cause of

the outage and whether there are any system wide issues that need to be addressed,” chief executive Carl Hansen said. Both Transpower which operates the substation and lines company Vector whose cables were damaged in the blaze say they don’t know what sparked the fire. The oil in the cables increased the heat in the blaze which took firefighters four hours to bring under control. Unlike at other substations, the cables were not buried in the trench because the volcanic rock impacted the rating of the cable when underground. Transpower has spent around $2 billion in the past five years upgrading its aged equipment and improving security of supply in Auckland which has have five major outages since 1998. Part of that expenditure included around $20m on the Penrose substation and the $473m spent on the North Auckland and Northland project which from February has provided a new 220kv cable from Pakuranga to Albany. The latter gives an alternative route to move power through and around Auckland.

Customers who pre-ordered Apple’s latest m o d e l iPhones are being left waiting as telcos keep pushing back delivery dates. Telecommunications companies say there is a shortage of supply in New Zealand, but customers - some of whom have already paid for the devices - are questioning why they were promised something if it was unable to be delivered. A Parnell hotel manager was among Vodafone customers left waiting for a new iPhone 6 64Gb handset. He has already paid for the device and has been waiting 10 days for its arrival. Yesterday, he was told the wait could be up to 21 days for the latest gadget from the US company. “I looked at [Vodafone’s] website and I see that it has extended the seven days to a possible 21 days and I just think that’s not on ... how can a company turn around and say that to customers that have already pre-ordered?” - APNZ

EMPLOYMENT MATTERS

to the manager. The employee said she was “shocked and disturbed at the allegations”. After a couple of meetings and two days sick leave, Ms Rota-Tawha resigned, claiming she was constructively dismissed. The authority agreed with the employee, commenting that calling the police to visit the employee’s home on the basis of possibly unreliable information (the informant wanted to remain anonymous), about unidentified pots and pans and a less than accurate identification of chairs was unjustified. The employer should have, at a minimum, checked to see if these items were missing. The authority concluded the allegations by the informant were not supported by any meaningful evidence at all. Therefore the employee’s resignation was caused by a breach of duty by her employer which

resulted in the employee no longer having trust and confidence in her employer. The learning from this case is to check facts before considering what actions to take. It is also usually better to deal with the employment-related matters internally before making it a police matter. Once raised with the police, or even if you acknowledge you are thinking about raising it with the police, the employee has a right to silence until the case is heard and/or determined. This can take some time, maybe even months, and if your own employment investigation has to be delayed it could mean having to consider if paid suspension is necessary in the meantime. Think twice before calling the police An Employment Relations Authority decision has highlighted the perils of contacting the police prematurely when you suspect an employee of theft. It cost this employer three months lost wages, $5000 compensation and costs. The manager of Radius Residential Care Facility became aware a number of items had gone missing from the facility, but hadn’t been able to identify who was responsible. On the condition of anonymity an employee told the manager that Ms Rota-Tawha, another employee, had some of the facility’s dining room chairs and pots and pans at her home. The manager contacted the police and the facility’s community constable visited Ms Rota-Tawha’s home a couple of weeks later, and advised her he had information that alleged she had taken some pots and pans. Ms Rota-Tawha allowed the constable into her house to look around. Once he had done so the constable was satisfied there was no stolen property, including noting the chairs in the dining room were a different colour to those belonging to the employer. This was conveyed in a report

■ AUCKLAND’S POWER OUTAGES

Energy and Resources Minister Simon Bridges has formally requested the Electricity Authority conduct an inquiry into the Auckland power outage. All power has been restored to the 85,000 households and businesses that had their electricity cut in the early hours of Sunday morning after fire damaged cables at Transpower’s Penrose substation. The two days of disruption costs millions of dollars in lost sales and one of the questions to be asked in the inquiry will be the economic impact of the outage. Bridges said while there was always the possibility something like this could occur even in electricity systems with strong security of supply, it was important to give the public confidence that risks to power supply were being adequately managed. The Electricity Authority is an independent Crown entity with wide-ranging powers to gather information and inquire into any matter relating to the electricity industry and make recommendations on any potential changes. Questions the minister wants an-

■ VERSATILE EGGPLANT

Hooked on easy eggplant Eggplant is an under-rated vegetable but once you’ve tried it you’ll be hooked. Not only is it great given the simple treatment, brushed with a little chilli oil and grilled on a barbeque to accompany a steak, it’s versatile enough to be at home in just about any dish from any cuisine. It has a deliciously meaty texture that adds bulk to meals and it happily absorbs any sauce that it’s cooked in. On its own, its flavour is mild and that adds to its versatility. Eggplant are cheap at the moment, why not give one a try.

Rob’s dreams of steel Lyndhurst sculptor Rob Thorpe hopes to one day make a living from his work. Susan Sandys reports.

L

yndhurst dad-of-two Rob Thorpe is reviving an artistic talent which has lain dormant since his school days. From Australia originally, the 50-yearold worked in maintenance and construction upon leaving school, and later went into the mining industry. He and his Kiwi wife Jo moved to New Zealand in 1997, where he began a career in engineering. Today the couple have two teenagers and Jo is a dairy worker while Rob does parttime subcontracting engineer work. His job has allowed him time to delve into a new passion, that of steel work sculpture. His main tools are a hammer, grinder and

cutting disc, and he spends hours belting away at bits of sheet metal in his home garage. He then welds the pieces together to create art works which have so far included an android warrior, a praying mantis, a minotaur’s head and a mythical-style tree and snake. Mr Thorpe is aiming to get a collection of his work together, and then hold an exhibition or display. His ideal would be to ultimately make a living from his work, selling pieces and undertaking commissions. “This is what my true passion would be,

doing something like this for a career,” he said. Rob used to earn himself pocket money at school by doings drawings for fellow pupils, creating greeting cards for them to give their family members. And he and his brother won prizes as children in art competitions with their combined landscapes. His brother would draw the backdrop, while Rob would sketch in trees and birds. He said he got busy with “distractions” upon leaving school, so never really got back into his art. “It’s always been in the back of my mind,” Rob said.

Kiwi colt on the outer

guardianonline.co.nz

The Melbourne Group One hopes of Our Vespa have taken a barrier blow after the colt drew the outside gate in Saturday’s $A1million Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m). To be ridden for the first time by Craig Williams, the Johno Benner-trained son of Elusive City will jump from gate 14. The Gr.3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude winner Rich Enuff also has a potentially awkward draw in 10 while the Queenslander Looks Like The Cat, who has finished runnerup at his last two outings, is inside the pre-post favourite at nine. The New Zealand-bred Merion, the winner of three of his four starts for Mike Moroney, will jump from barrier four. - APNZ

Test for Rockwell Exciting five-year-old Rockwell will be out to defend his unbeaten domestic record when he steps out at Taupo today. The son of Fastnet Rock made one appearance at home last season for an impressive maiden win at Avondale, which earned him a trip to Queensland. Rockwell finished runner-up at Ipswich in his Australian debut before a below par effort preceded a welcome victory at the Gold Coast. Rockwell will resume in the Taupo Farmlands 1000 and from a handy gate his rider Vinnie Colgan should be able to use the gelding’s early gate speed to good advantage. - APNZ

Riddell back on I Do Jonathan Riddell will resume his association with the glamour grey I Do at Hawera this Saturday. The 36-year-old Awapuni-based jockey knows the mare well having won two black type races on her last season and they will be looking to go one better in the Gr.3 Rich Hill Stud Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes. Riddell and I Do were narrowly beaten in the feature by Postmans Daughter 12 months ago, after which they combined to win the Gr.3 Manawatu Challenge Stakes and the Listed Tauranga Classic. “Jonathan has ridden her quite a few times and I’m more than happy to have him on,” trainer Allan Sharrock said. - APNZ

Rubick back on track A sharp gallop on the Caulfield course proper has quality colt Rubick on target to tackle the older horses for the first time in the Schillaci Stakes. Rubick worked over 800m in 52.04 with trainer Gerald Ryan’s son Blake aboard yesterday morning and was clocked at a slick 23.22sec for his final 400m. While the colt is expected to improve on what he does on Saturday ahead of his main target, the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). - AAP

Shinn rides his luck Steve Englebrecht is as thankful as he is relieved to have Blake Shinn continue an association with his stable at Warwick Farm. Confirming he is one of Sydney most soughtafter jockeys with a Group One double at the weekend, Shinn will be out to keep an unblemished record with the Englebrechttrained Lucky Lucky Lucky in the Bloodstock.com.au Handicap today. “To say he is hot to trot at the moment is an understatement,” Englebrecht said. - AAP

A filly with a fine future, the Simon Adlam trained Break Dance left the field in her wake in the third on the card at yesterday’s Chertsey Trotting Club trials. PHOTO TETSURO MITOMO 071014-TM-108

■ CHERTSEY TRIALS

Break Dance wipes the floor Simon Adlam could have a star of the future in his stable in three-year-old filly Break Dance. At yesterday’s Chertsey Trotting Club trials she ran the perfect race, happy to bide her time before showing a brilliant turn of speed in the home straight to run down the field, coming home three lengths

clear of Leo O’Reilly and Galleon’s Conquest. There were six runners in the third event of the day, and from the stand all but The Lions Roar were safely under way. For most of the 2400 metre journey Jim Curtin and Here Comes Helen had the race in their hands.

The Real Desire-Helen Victoria three-year-old made a tidy job as pacemaker until the fireworks started in the final few hundred metres. The first challenge was mounted by Galleon’s Conquest who’d been happy to sit in the trail for most of the distance. Over the final few hundred

metres however, the Bettors Delight-Galleon’s Chair gelding had to give way to the firepower of Adlam and the Art Major-Wave Runner filly Break Dance, who came home three lengths clear of the field. She ran the 2400m in 3:05.5, final 800m, 57.3secs, last 400m, 27.2 secs.

A marketing promotion that really gallops Cilla Hegarty is poised to get her own “Woohoo” moment. The NZ Tax Refunds founder and chief executive is accustomed to breaking new boundaries to promote what has become one of the country’s most recognisable businesses. The “Woohoo” advertising campaign has already seen the company honoured at last year’s TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Awards, while Hegarty has been recognised for her business acumen with several businesswoman and entrepreneurial awards. Hegarty launched New Zealand Tax Refunds in 2008 and the business has since processed more than 1.2 million refunds for customers as it constantly aims to push new limits and expand. But Hegarty and her team have stepped into unchartered waters with their new market-

ing strategy - racing a thoroughbred racehorse. Named Gottagetmywoohoo, Hegarty’s young galloper will endeavour to become one of the most memorable marketing tools ever if he can live up to the potential he has displayed so far. With his jockey sporting silks bearing the Woohoo logo, Gottagetmywoohoo has already become a fast-moving advertising billboard for NZ Tax Refunds, but the three-year-old could yet become a trailblazer for other businesses looking to invest in a racehorse as an unconventional promotional tool. During New Zealand Cup week at Riccarton, where NZ Tax Refunds was not only sponsoring a race but also involved in promoting the Fashions in the Fields competition, Hegarty mooted the idea that her business could race a gal-

loper under Hughes’ guidance. Hughes identified an Iffraaj colt out of the Flying Spur mare Charangas. “He was a lovely, big colt and I was pleased to get him, given that we didn’t have anything extra to spare. “We’ve just followed the steps through and Cilla’s so into it. It’s been really enjoyable having a new owner who is enjoying the whole experience so much.” The colt was gelded, named Gottagetmywoohoo, then sent to the trials where he finished third at his first outing before winning a four-horse heat at Rangiora to prime him for his raceday debut. That came at Riccarton on May 30 and the colt didn’t let anyone down, running a brave second to Elusive Catch. For Hegarty and her team, it was a great thrill.

The more pragmatic Hughes was satisfied with the outing, knowing there is plenty more improvement to come from the youngster who has had a winter break to prepare for a spring campaign which kicks off at the South Canterbury meeting this Friday. “He’s not a bad horse. “There’s no reason why we wouldn’t have a nibble at some of the Classic races with him as a three-year-old.” “He’s furnished up really well. “I’m really happy with the way he’s coming back up,” Hughes says. “Cilla’s got so much passion and the ‘Woohoo’ colours are going to get flogged to death. “It’s a great way of getting your business out there. “She’s using racing as a way of boosting the profile of her business.” - APNZ

Ashburton benefits from Cup Week In the build up to Cup Week in Christchurch in just over a month the quality horses are starting to appear, and the Ashburton Racing Club anticipates some fine fields for the meeting on Saturday week, October 18. The Ray Coupland Stakes has long been an event which is a precursor for the 2000 and 1000 Guineas with the Te Akau stables having such a terrific winning record, and this year seems no exception. Darci’s Dream, an impressive stakes winner at Riccarton will be one of their representatives with the possibility of another to be finalised. The Ashburton Cup over 1200m provides automatic entry into the Stewards Handicap at Riccarton and some of the best South Island sprinters will contest this year’s edition. The classy Wingatui mare The Diamond One is likely to begin her campaign in the Cup and will be difficult to contain. Her stablemate The Solitaire a Group One performer took her first step toward another start in next month’s Gr. 3 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile recently and will contest the Open 1600m event. The local mare Lamaze will be amongst the opposition. The feature meeting has a good supporting card in place, and officials are hopeful of a good crowd to enjoy the only Saturday meeting of the Ashburton Racing Club.

In brief Hatch Cup The Mid Canterbury Primary A hockey team lost to Bay of Plenty 2-3 at the Hatch Cup National Hockey Tournament in Palmerston North yesterday. Mid Canterbury struck first through Sam Lee but Bay of Plenty equalised before halftime before adding two further goals in the second half. Logan Currie then hit home Mid Canterbury’s second with two minutes to go but they were unable to conjure up an equaliser. Today they meet Horowhenua and Wanganui to complete pool play.

Collier Trophy Tauranga handed the Mid Canterbury Primary A girls their third defeat at the Collier Trophy National Secondary School Hockey Tournament in Invercargill yesterday. Tauranga took the win 3-0 to go top of Pool B leaving Mid Canterbury to complete pool play against hosts Invercargill this morning before a non-competition match against Taranaki in the afternoon, with cross over play beginning tomorrow.

Meehan, Leapai spar When building for their next bout, boxers often look for sparring partners that mimic their opponent. Heavyweights Kali Meehan and Alex Leapai both have career-defining fights on the horizon during the next two months and given Meehan shares a similar build to Leapai’s opponent and vice-versa, it made sense that they’d help each other out. The 1.95m Meehan will square off against fellow Kiwi Shane Cameron (1.88m, 29-4) for the WBA Oceania heavyweight title on the North Shore on November 22, while Australia’s Leapai, who stands 1.83m, will meet skilled American Malik Scott (1.94m, 36-2-1) in Brisbane on October 24. - APNZ

Fraser won her third 100m freestyle Olympic gold at the 1964 Games, despite spending nine weeks in a steel brace in the lead-up after a crash that killed her mother. This week Fraser, her daughter and grandson will join 15 other members of the 1964 Australian Games team for 50th anniversary celebrations in Tokyo. - AAP

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Four newcomers in Kiwis Four rookies have been included in the Kiwis squad to contest the Four Nations tournament over the next six weeks. Teenage Penrith Panthers wing Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Cronulla utility Sosaia Feki, North Queensland second row Jason Taumalolo and Warriors prop Suaia Matagi are the newcomers in a 24-man squad that will also see Penrith utility Lewis Brown back in the black jersey for the first time since 2011. This won’t be Taumalolo’s first experience with the Kiwis - he was a non-playing member of the 2012 Anzac Test to Australia - but this will be another chance for him to finally take the field. Watene-Zelezniak earns his spot in the team with an outstanding debut season for the Panthers, a season which produced seven tries in 10 appearances and helped his injury-riddled side deep into to the NRL playoffs. Feki and Matagi get their chances with the late withdrawals of Sydney Roosters teammates Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, both through burnout from a long season. Brown has played five tests for his country and has reclaimed his spot in the side with consistently outstanding performances this season for the Panthers. “We’re really excited for the new players coming in for their first time or, in Jason’s case, another chance to earn his first cap,” says Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney. “They’ve all had great sea-

sons in the NRL, and this will be a chance for them to show they can step up and contribute at the next level. “After our World Cup disappointment last year, I think we made some very positive strides at this year’s Anzac Test. “We get a few older heads back for this campaign - they will provide some experience, and hopefully will feed off the energy and passion from those younger guys.” “We’re very focused on building a team and culture that will see us challenge for the next Rugby League World Cup in 2017, so these new players now have a chance to become part of that long-term process.” Of the train-on squad named over the past month, several players have become unavail-

able though injury or health issues. They include Konrad Hurrell (Warriors), Ben Matulino (Warriors), Sam McKendry (Penrith Panthers), Tuivasa-Sheck and Waerea-Hargreaves. “It’s always disappointing to lose players this way, but this is a tough game and you have to expect a certain amount of attrition at the end of any season,” says Kearney. “You have to take a longerterm view of these things - it’s important they get themselves right and come back to us when they can.” The Kiwis will assemble on the Gold Coast on October 18, and will begin their Four Nations campaign against Australia at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, October 25. - HOL

Hannant starts Bronco exodus By Jim morton North Queensland have moved swiftly to ensure their engine room remains among the best in the NRL by pouncing on offcontract Brisbane forward Ben Hannant. Former Test and Queensland Origin prop Hannant has signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys in a move that could see him the first of three Broncos big guns to leave Red Hill this month. With expectations firming that Wayne Bennett will bring Darius Boyd back with him, Josh Hoffman is poised to sign elsewhere and Ben Barba is also weighing up his options.

The Broncos, who are overloaded with fullbacks, have little salary cap room to spare and offloading Barba, as well as Hoffman, would help address a lack of balance in their squad. Bennett has told Hoffman, overlooked by New Zealand selectors yesterday, he is free to negotiate with rival clubs despite being contracted for 2015 on a deal that is half of what he may command elsewhere. Speculation is mounting that Barba, who will have to give up the No.6 jersey for ex-Raider Anthony Milford, may also depart as he’s reportedly being shopped around by the Broncos. The club’s awkward salary cap restraints ultimately saw

Hannant, used as a bench player under Anthony Griffin, take a bigger offer at the Cowboys following interest from both Melbourne and Manly. The 29-year-old’s move stiffens North Queensland’s topclass pack - featuring fellow international props Matt Scott and James Tamou - after they lost the Sims brothers, Tariq (Newcastle) and Ashton (Warrington). “I’m really looking forward to the opportunities that playing with the Cowboys will present,” Hannant said. “It’s going to be great to be able to train and play with the likes of JT (Johnathan Thurston) and Matt Scott who I know really well from Origin.”

With 192 NRL games of experience, plus 12 Origin matches and six Tests, Hannant is justifiably seen as a significant asset by the Cowboys. “He’s a great signing for the club,” said rising Kiwis backrower Jason Taumalolo. “He’ll bring a lot of experience like Ashton did to our pack. He’ll help with our engine room going forward.” Tagged the next Sonny Bill Williams, Taumalolo did his best to distance himself from such expectations that he’s been forced to endure since 16. “It puts a lot of pressure on you,” the 21-year-old said. “That is the last thing I would want.” - AAP

Bailey Mes: Likely to see plenty of game time following a good performance when she came on last Thursday.

ODT PHOTO

the team would be considered empty. Instead she must work with each individuals to improve her skill-set, tactical awareness and confidence. But while squad changes are unlikely, Taumaunu has hinted some changes could be made to the line-up for tonight’s game after shooter Bailey Mes and midcourter Grace Rasmussen

appeared to make an impact following their introduction. “I tend to be guided by evidence and I think the group that finished on Thursday night did very well. “They are inexperienced but they showed they can cope with the intensity of a test match against Australia,” Taumaunu said. One of the key issues to

emerge in the opening game was the breakdown in the Ferns’ defensive links, particularly through the midcourt. The experienced New Zealand midcourt trio of Joline Henry, Laura Langman and Liana Leota were overrun by Australia’s slick through-court attack, as they struggled to halt the Diamonds’ speed and swift ball movement. Henry said her performance in Invercargill caused her “a few sleepless nights”, but also prompted some constructive conversations within the midcourt unit. “It has stimulated a lot of discussion about what each other’s views are on what our roles are in there and how we can make life tougher for the opposition,” Henry said. “Because we have been together a while I guess we made lots of assumptions about our connections and about our invisible threads. “We’ve done a lot of work on that in the past and we assumed that those links would still be there.” Henry admits the team was extremely dispirited when they got on the plane to Melbourne on Friday after such a comprehensive defeat. But after addressing the key issues in the game and hitting the training court hard over the past couple of days, she said the mood in the camp had greatly improved. “We don’t want to sit around and dwell on that performance, we want to get out there again and show that we are a better side than that.” - NZH

■ RUGBY

Auckland well aware of Steelers’ capabilities By CampBell Burnes Sonny Bill Williams will return to rugby off the bench tonight as opponents Auckland seek to halt the Steelers’ late ITM Cup Premiership semi-final run in Pukekohe. What is certain is that the Steelers will not miss 47 tackles as Waikato did last week against Auckland, so this will be a demonstrably tougher contest for Tom McCartney’s men. “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” said Auckland coach Paul Feeney. “Waikato didn’t have their best night at the office. They missed 14 or 15 tackles on George Mo-

In brief

Stern message for Ferns Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu has put the heat on individuals to step up and do their jobs ahead of tonight’s second Constellation Cup test in Melbourne. Any hope of a series win has long deserted the New Zealand camp following a 17-goal capitulation to the polished Diamonds in last Thursday’s opener in Invercargill. In a worrying indication of the competitive gulf between the Ferns and Australia, talk of winning a match in this series has been replaced with chatter about “closing the gap”, “improving performances” and “restoring pride”. Taumaunu believes the only way for her side to do this is for the individual players to make a commitment to one other that they will each step up and perform their roles. “We’ve become very focused on our individual tasks. “We all recognise that there are simple things that we can put right very quickly, and that’s up to us to do,” Taumaunu said. “So from that perspective people are quite determined and quite confident they can adjust. “Once we start making those changes then the snowball effect is that the result will be better.” There is little point in Taumaunu putting the players on notice. With the depth such as it is in New Zealand netball any threats of being dropped from

ala alone. We don’t like to miss 14 or 15 in one game.” Moala’s battle on the wing with a resurgent Frank Halai should be fun. Feeney has been impressed with the Steelers’ recent form. They seem to have even tidied up some lineout issues that plagued their early matches; Jordan Taufua scored off an effective lineout drive against the Stags. “They’ve sorted out a few things within their camp and they are playing back to their normal standard ... On their day, Counties can beat anyone. Everyone in New Zealand knows that,” said Feeney.

An Auckland victory, which has come to pass every year since 2008 - though the last three seasons have seen close contests - would confirm them in the semi-finals, and they could rise as high as third, unless Canterbury can arrest their slump. The Steelers must win both their last two games, and hope Auckland stumble against the Taniwha on Saturday. Lock Patrick Tuipulotu will start tonight, but will not play against Northland. However, the two Charlies - Faumuina and Piutau - along with Steven Luatua, will be available for that clash. Francis Saili is back from

form exile and will line up at No13, with Hadleigh Parkes, who punched plenty of holes in the Waikato line, moving in to second-five. That seasoned pair will be tasked with shutting down the in-form Bundee Aki and Rey Lee-Lo, not to mention Williams. Steelers coach Tana Umaga was happy to endorse his halfback August Pulu should he be elevated to the All Blacks, after Tawera Kerr-Barlow was ruled out for the season. “Augie is starting to get back to some of his best form. He’s been outstanding for us in the last two or three games. I think he’s ready for it.” - NZH

Prize pool up to $1m New Zealand’s flagship golf tournament has increased its prize pool to $1 million and will be broadcast live here and in Japan. The NZ Open has joined up with new naming rights sponsor BMW for the tier one tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia, which will be played at the Hills and Millbrook courses in Queenstown from March 12-15 next year. Initial details were unveiled yesterday in Auckland by John Hart, chairman of the organising committee. Hart confirmed there had been interest from golfers in Europe and America but none could make any commitments to travel and play until they knew their schedules. - NZH

Hunt moving on up Mark Hunt has moved up to No.4 in the UFC’s heavyweight rankings. The rankings are updated weekly and Hunt, who last appeared in the cage when he knocked out Roy Nelson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 52 in Japan last month, has switched places with American Stipe Miocic who drops to No.5. In the UFC, champions aren’t ranked, just the contenders, which effectively means Hunt is perceived as the world’s fifth-best heavyweight. - APNZ

Checking out the MCG New Zealand are leaving little to chance in their preparations for the cricket World Cup early next year. A squad of 19 players left yesterday for a two-day camp in Melbourne, and while coach Mike Hesson said it should not be read as a closed book on the players in the frame to make the final World Cup 15, it’s fair to assume the bulk, at least, will come from this group. New Zealand have yet to make a cup final, but there is a confidence within the leading group of players that this represents a fine opportunity to break that duck. - NZH

Giteau in top form He was shunted out when the ‘three amigos’ were Robbie Deans’ new best mates but Matt Giteau’s French renaissance has shown the former poster-boy’s enduring powers. Giteau has been named French rugby’s Top 14 player of the season - three years after pack-ing his bags when overlooked for Australia’s last World Cup campaign. Now 32, the one-time highest paid Wallaby is as influential as ever as a global rugby superstar. - AAP

Volvo ‘in with a shot’ Touring car legend Jim Richards rates Kiwi youngster Scott McLaughlin a big chance to give Volvo victory over the Holdens and Fords in the Bathurst 1000 on Sunday. Richards knows what it takes to rile the Holden and Ford faithful at Mount Panorama. He did it in 1992, describing them as a “pack of arseholes” for booing when he won a second straight Bathurst crown with Mark Skaife in a Nissan. In fact, Richards has been responsible for half of the six winners not built by Holden or Ford in 53 editions of the Great Race on the mountain. And he reckons there could be another this year from tyro McLaughlin and his co-driver, Frenchman Alexandre Premat. - AAP

Biodiversity Grant Applications

Plan ahead, do what you enjoy

Funding applications are now being invited from groups and organisations for financial assistance from the Ashburton District Council’s Biodiversity Grants scheme.

Older people stop driving for various reasons. As the time approaches it is important to plan for future transport needs, so stopping driving will not be a limiting factor that prevents you from doing what you want to.

Council provides biodiversity grants to protect and/or enhance indigenous biodiversity in the Ashburton District. The maximum individual grant available is $5,000 and can be no more than 50% of the total project cost. The applicants share of the project’s cost can be in kind, or financial. Application forms and full criteria are available from the Council website and from the Council offices. For further enquiries please contact the Council on 307 7700 or email info@adc.govt.nz. Applications close 5.00pm Tuesday 11 November 2014.

BUILDING CONSENTS ONLINE Getting a building consent is now an easier process for Ashburton District builders and homeowners. Building consent applications can now be made online through the Council website. For more information visit www.ashburtondc.govt.nz

Early mornings on the water While their mates are still sleeping Ashburton College rowers are out on the water of Lake Hood, brushing up their skills ahead of the new rowing season. Each morning this week the

teenagers are out of bed and on the water by 7am, putting in four hours of hard work behind the oars. As well as building up fitness for the season ahead, the rowers are working on sharpening

techniques they hope will earn them medals over the coming regattas. First up is the Aoraki 1000 at Twizel at the start of November, followed by an event on home water.

The summer regatta are all working towards the season’s big event, the Maadi Cup traditionally held in March on Lake Ruataniwha. Most mornings there are about four quads and two or

three single boats on the water, coach Steve Beveridge said. The college has a current squad of about 28 young rowers, with skills steadily building as they gain experience, he said.

Sam Burgess also has fractured eye socket BY JAMES MACSMITH Sam Burgess’ NRL grand final heroics continue to grow, with scans revealing the Clive Churchill medallist suffered a fractured eye socket alongside his fractured cheekbone in Sunday’s win over Canterbury.

Rugby-union bound Burgess, who suffered the injuries in the opening tackle but played out the game, was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday. “Just laying in hospital waiting for surgery, I look similar to a hamster at the moment. I wouldn’t change anything for

the world though,” Burgess wrote on Twitter. “Thanks to everyone for your well wishes and congratulations. It’s been an amazing journey this year with a fitting end. Wow.’ The 25-year-old Englishman told 2KY’s Big Sports Breakfast yesterday morning that the in-

jury was troubling him after the hectic celebrations that greeted the end of Souths’ 43-year premiership drought. “The cheek is pretty sore, the adrenalin has certainly worn off,” Burgess said. “It is worth it for the feeling we got at the end of the game.” - AAP
