Big crowds at this year’s Ashburton A&P Show has the hard-working committee smiling.

In her first year in the president’s seat, Lynette Lovett was “extremely happy” with the community response to the two-day event.

The record number of trade and craft exhibits necessitated opening the northern end of the grounds to accommodate them.

“We had a lot of extra exhibits this year, and there were no complaints,” Mrs Lovett said.

Gate takings were close to the $4000 mark; well up on last year.

Mrs Lovett said the two prize draws valued at $500 each seemed to have attracted extra people through the gates on Friday.

She has been involved with the show since 1975, so taking on the presidency hadn’t fazed her.

“I’ve just progressed through to it really, and learned the ropes on the way. We’ve got a fantastic committee and everyone helps each other,” she said.

“We’ve got several new people on the ground, but we are always looking for more people – it’s the two weeks leading up to the show, and for a couple of days after it that we are really busy, so every hand helps.”

The Grains and Seeds of the Canterbury Plains show theme proved a winner for exhibitors.

“Dairying often grabs the headlines so it was a good chance to emphasise how important crop farming is to the district’s economy,” Mrs Lovett said.

Fake fakes to go under hammer While famous forgeries are not uncommon in the art world, one Auckland auctioneers will tomorrow put two fake fakes under the hammer. Two forged “Monet” paintings had to be pulled from Cordy’s auctioneers last month after they were discovered to be inferior imitations of famous art forger Elmyr de Hory.

Mark Forgy, a de Hory expert, spotted the auction online and contacted Cordy’s to claim the two oil paintings, In the Woods at Giverny and At Giverny, were rip-offs painted more than 30 years ago by London bookmaker Ken Talbot. Auctioneer Andrew Grigg was quick to withdraw the fake fakes from last month’s sale. “Of course it is never our intention to deceive and we were not aware that the faker’s works were faked,” he said.

But now the two pictures are going under the hammer advertised as, ‘Fakes of fake Claude Monet and other intriguing and must view items’. “We try at all times to present items correctly but were astonished to find that there was a market in faking faker’s art works and hope this does not start a market trend here in faking Karl Sim aka Charles F. Goldie art works,” Mr Grigg said.

Hunt on for top seabird Forest and Bird’s Seabird of the Year poll to find the country’s most popular seabird will open today. The charity has run a bird of the year poll since 2005, but this year the poll only includes seabirds, to highlight their importance and the significant threat to them. Some of those campaigning on behalf of a seabird include New Zealand First leader Winston Peters for Buller’s shearwater, United Future leader Peter Dunne for the northern royal albatross and Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei for the brown skua. The campaign managers will be creating posters, videos, and blogs in support of ‘their’ birds during the poll.

Jake Gyllenhaal hated Halloween Jake Gyllenhaal has mixed emotions about Halloween because his designer dad used to dress him up in elaborate costumes to trick-or-treat in. One year, the actor hit the neighbourhood as a cranberry juice box and another, his father crafted a small house around him. The Brokeback Mountain star says, “He was obsessed with designing the costumes for me and my sister. One year I was a cranberry juice box... like, a cardboard box that was the size of my body with a straw that was made out of cardboard... and I wore a white spandex suit. It was like a month-long promenade towards Halloween. We designed it, there were drawings, and then every day after I finished my homework, I had to do it with him. I was an Oreo cookie one year. The ultimate one he did was a house one year... It was a house with different scenes in each window and there were lights... It fit on top of my head, I could see out of the one window and the chimney was where you put the candy in. I could not hear a thing and I couldn’t walk in it and my dad was so proud of himself.” He reveals somehow his actress sister Maggie Gyllenhaal escaped the Halloween drama, but he spent years trick-ortreating in elaborate costumes. He adds, “Essentially, my father was a great dad but at Halloween it was, like, the most horrible holiday.”

Hello Kitty turns 40 Hello Kitty, Japan’s global icon of cute, has marked her 40th anniversary with a human-size version of the feline character regaling fans at an upscale Tokyo department store and a theme park.

The moon-faced creation that adorns everything from pencil cases to pyjamas the world over, began her birthday on Saturday as a one-day manager of the Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo’s glitzy Ginza district. Clad in pink from head to toe - including a child-like bow - a human-size Kitty showed up at an in-house meeting at the store, drawing cheers and applause from a horde of employees. The mouthless character did not speak but waved and struck poses.

The first merchandise with Kitty was a coin purse launched in Japan in 1975.

She now appears on more than 50,000 products in 130 countries and territories.

Band to break bad habits An American firm has developed a wristband to help people break bad habits by administering an electric shock. The user simply picks a bad habit he or she wishes to tackle and chooses the punishment the wristband will mete out, which can range anywhere from a vibration or sound reminder, to making the wearer pay a fee or sending a mild electric shock of up to 300 volts. If on the other hand, the wearer gets up early as planned, goes to the gym or completes the hours necessary to complete an academic paper, then a financial reward is handed out or a friend is notified. The wristband has been developed by a Boston company and contains a Bluetooth radio that links to a smartphone app. The device is called “Pavlok” and takes its name from Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, who is famous for his 1918 study of classical conditioning, whereby he rang a bell every time he gave food to a dog.

More time needed for gallery review

When it lifted the lid on issues surrounding time delays and budget over-runs for Ashburton’s art gallery and heritage centre, a review team uncovered a pool of widely divergent views on what went right and what went wrong.

The West Street complex was completed more than one year over time and around $6 million over budget and Ashburton

District Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel wanted to know why.

To find the answers he commissioned local government specialist consultant company Morrison Low to undertake a review of the project from start to finish.

Reviewers were in Ashburton last month conducting face-toface interviews with 25 people identified as key stakeholders in the project. A large amount of

material, including council reports and minutes, official documents, invoices, submissions and council plans were also passed over to the review team.

While he had hoped to have the review wrapped up by the end of the month, Mr Dalziel said there had been so many disparate views and opinions given that more time was needed to nail down what had happened during the life of the project.

“In order to make some sense

of what they have been told they will need to do more detailed investigations than was initially envisaged in order to verify statement; they’ve asked to see other pieces of information and to speak to other people. I have approved this additional level of work and the associated cost because I want a report of some substance,” he said.

The review report will be presented to councillors at the December council meeting.

“This will cost us a wee bit more but it will be worth it,” Mr Dalziel said.

The council was granted a resource consent for the complex in September 2010 but this was subject to appeals and hearings.

A construction tender was accepted in August 2011 but work did not start until July 2012.

The project was completed in September this year, more than one year late and $6 million over budget.

■ STRUCK BY A CAR

Family devastated An Auckland family are devastated at the death of a man who was struck by a car while lying on an unlit rural road early yesterday.

The 43-year-old died after being run over on Hunua Road, east of Papakura, about 4am.

Resident Duncan Patrick said the deceased was his neighbour on Jones Road, a short distance from the crash scene.

Mr Patrick said he had spent the day with the man’s family while they grieved.

The family had already suffered “a couple of deaths this year” and didn’t want to talk about their loss, Mr Patrick said.

“The family are obviously pretty devastated.”

It wasn’t clear why the man was lying on the road near his home when he was run over.

“He was going to a mate’s place or something,” Mr Patrick said.

“Apparently he wasn’t

drunk. I’ve known him for a while and I’ve never known him to be drunk.”

The man was a regular customer at Hunua Mini Supermarket, where staff member Rupinder Kour said other regulars had been talking about the death.

Sergeant Darryll Horn of Papakura police said the 43-year-old male died at the scene after he was run over on Hunua Road at 4am. The driver of the car remained at the scene and is co-operating with police, he said.

“It is understood that the man was lying on the road before he was run over,” Sergeant Horn said.

The name of the dead man will not be released until he has been formally identified.

Police asked for information from anyone in the area between 2am and 4am, who “possibly saw something strange that they may not have realised was a person on the road.”

Guy Fawkes last year was incident free and the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade has its fingers crossed this year will also be a quiet one.

Ashburton Fire Risk Management Officer Murray Cairns is hopeful that this Guy Fawkes year mirrors last, but said it will depend what is going on.

Mr Cairns said the banning

of skyrockets and the shortened timeframe in which fireworks could be sold (November 2–5) meant the past few years had not been too bad for firefighters. If people did want to light their own fireworks at home though, there were a few rules that should be followed.

To safely let off fireworks Mr Cairns said it is important to follow the instructions, make sure there is a lot of clear

space and have a garden hose on hand. Often fireworks have a habit of falling over and people must take caution.

“Keep a good eye out.”

If an accident happens dial 111 as quickly as possible.

Mr Cairns also wanted to remind people that it is illegal to have a bonfire in your backyard.

Other things that are important to remember include taking the weather into account

and not lighting fireworks when the winds are too strong.

It is also important to consider pets during the Guy Fawkes period. Mid Canterbury SPCA manager John Keeley said it is a crazy time of year.

“It is one of the worst days of the year for pets.”

To keep pets safe Mr Keeley suggested keeping them inside and away from the fireworks with the radio or television on.

Rider falls from dirt bike

Council grant Owners of historic Ardentrive residence on Carters Terrace have been given a grant by the Ashburton District Council to help with repair and replacement work on windows and bargeboards on their home. The council’s heritage assessment committee had $54,131 to distribute in this round of heritage grants, and opted to give owner Chris Redmond $7000 towards the work. The total cost of the work is almost $60,000.

Council staff boost With the employment of 45 new staff at the EA Networks Centre, the Ashburton District Council has boosted its staff numbers to 164 (147 full time equivalents).

Centre manager Steve Prescott has added 24 swim tutors/coaches, 20 lifeguards and one receptionist to his team. He has also appointed Richard Wood as the centre’s assistant manager.

East Coast quake The East Coast was rattled by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake yesterday. GeoNet recorded the earthquake that centred 75 kilometres north of Te Araroa at 8.04am. The earthquake had a depth of six kilometres.

One eight-year-old who knocked on John Key’s door on Friday night came away with two chocolate Freddo frogs. Erin Mills said her son Rupert, 8, who was dressed as a dragon ninja warrior, was trick or treating on Friday on John Key’s Parnell street. Ms Mills said they were surprised and excited to see the gate to Mr Key’s home was open to trick or treaters. She said the house was very “festive” and Mr Key’s wife Bronagh was handing out candy.

Messiah to kick off festive season

Hinds soprano Lois Johnston is one of a few soloists to perform with the Mid Canterbury Choir at their biennial performance of Messiah in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

The concert will be on November 8 at 7pm.

It was not the first time Miss Johnston had performed the work; it was a classical inclusion in many soloists’ repertoire.

She said the popular oratorio with its bubbly and uplifting ‘Hallelujah’ chorus was a large scale sacred piece for choir and soloists.

It was performed by the choir every two years; they took it up from the Community Choir.

The performance will include guest soloists Miss Johnston (soprano), tenor Matthew Wilson, alto Ruth Reid and bass Robert Tucker. The organist is Martin Setchell.

They are under the musical direction of Sylvia Watson, who will finish with the choir at the end of the year.

Miss Johnston will take interim cover of the musical director role until May. She said the Messiah oratorio told the story of the coming of the Messiah from his birth through to his crucifixion and resurrection.

Miss Johnston said many people knew of the piece, or some of its music.

Mid Canterbury Choir manager Carol Gunn said Messiah was a performance people knew and loved.

It was also a good concert for people new to classical performances.

“It’s really easy to listen to,” she said.

Mrs Gunn said even after years knowing the piece, it still “sent shivers down my spine”.

Tickets for the concert cost $25, or $20 for seniors and students.

They can be brought from any choir member or at the door on the night.

“It’s a great way to start the Christmas period,” Miss Johnston said.

Hinds soprano Lois Johnston will hit the high notes as a guest performer in the Mid Canterbury Choir biennial performance of Messiah this month in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Rent subsidies proposed Income related rent subsidies will open up social housing to more people, Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says.

The minister told TV One’s Q+A programme yesterday about the government’s plan to open up the subsidy to community housing providers.

“We want to open it up which we haven’t really done, that community housing providers have access to income related rent.

“That makes a huge difference for them and more importantly for their tenants, so that they are getting cheaper housing.”

She said there were currently 4000 people on the waiting list for a state home.

“We want to have more homes. If we looked at it then we could spend literally hundreds of millions of dollars in building more houses, which may or may not be successful in the future and take a very long time.

“Or we could get 1000 people who we open up income related rents to, we then say we will subsidise them. The cost of that is about $13,000 a year.”

Ms Bennett said Housing New Zealand would remain the dominant force in providing social housing for the country but others such as church groups and iwi would have access to the subsidy.

She said the government was looking for “smarter use of what they had available”.

“We have to be looking at selling some state houses, so that we can actually do better developments on the land that is there.

“We need to be making sure that it’s affordable for community housing providers and others to get into the market.

That’s the role of the government that is what we are doing.”

She said it wasn’t about counting houses, it was about counting people.

Arrest over player’s death A teenager has been arrested in connection with the death of a talented rugby league player.

Luke Tipene, 17, died after a brawl involving up to 40 people erupted outside a Grey Lynn house, near Northland and Coleridge streets, during a party.

The Glen Eden teenager was a talented rugby league player on the brink of a professional career.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged

with murder and will appear in the Auckland Youth Court today, Detective Inspector Scott Beard said.

A post mortem examination found Mr Tipene received a fatal stab wound.

Police had made significant progress in the investigation but still needed to speak to a number of people who were in the vicinity of the assault about 12.15am, Mr Beard said.

Motorcyclists airlifted Two motorcyclist have been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital after they crashed in Waipara, North Canterbury last night. Police shift inspector Peter Hegarty said the motorbikes collided on Ferguson Ave at 5.15pm. Mr Hegarty said the Serious Crash Unit were consulted but did not attend the crash.

BY NICOLE LAWTON A new initiative by Ashburton College basketballers hopes to raise over $6000 in calendar sales by the end of the year.

Profits raised will go toward entry fees for next year’s tournaments for the school’s four basketball teams.

Calendar organiser Elfleda Dixon said it was the first time a fundraiser of this kind had been done in the college.

The calendar went on sale a fortnight ago and features various college students and sports teams.

Sales have been good so far, with many destined as Christmas presents for family and friends.

“We’re quietly optimistic, sales have been great and the feedback that we are receiving is that people are very happy with it.”

Living Springs fire Firefighters have managed to contain a scrub fire on the Banks Peninsula. Fire Services received a call after pine trees caught fire at Living Springs in Governors Bay just after 2pm yesterday, Fire Service spokeswoman Rachel Butler said. “There was smoke showing in the area of Living Springs.” Governors Bay and Lyttleton Fire Brigades responded to the fire, as well as Christchurch Rural Fire Tankers, she said. She said no-one was injured and there was no damage to any nearby houses.

Aaliyah Hall, 4, (left) was one of many folk who turned out for the Hinds community fun day yesterday. The event was staged to raise money for a new playground in Hinds, and organiser Alison King said it had been a resounding success.

“We had a great crowd and everyone had a fantastic time,” she said.

The final tally was not yet in, but Mrs King said it was already looking positive.

A hunter who spent two nights in the bush has been found and is in good health. About 30 search and rescue volunteers searched the Kaimanawa Forest Park yesterday after the hunter failed to return to his hut Saturday morning. A dog team from Land Search and Rescue found the missing hunter about midday yesterday near the Oamaru River in the park.

The hunter has been taken from the bush by the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter and police said he was in good health. Police thanked the LandSAR volunteers who helped in the search.

Police are trying to trace the steps of an 18-year-old man hit by a milk tanker on a remote part of State Highway 1, near Oamaru early yesterday morning. The man was flown to Dunedin Hospital in a status 1 condition, suffering head and chest injuries, after he was hit by the truck a kilometre south of Maheno about 1.12am. The incident occurred near the intersection of SH1 and Currie Road. The man remains in a serious condition in intensive care.

Rain helps snub out scrub fire Rain and cooling temperatures late yesterday afternoon brought relief to fire fighters tackling a massive scrub fire near Outram, south of Dunedin, which earlier had threatened homes and forced the evacuation of residents.

At the fire’s peak, dozens of firefighters battled on the ground alongside two diggers and four tankers, while helicopters with monsoon buckets worked to protect properties and fight the fire from the air.

But, between 5pm-6pm, the temperature dropped 10deg and more than 2mm of rain fell as a southerly front replaced the strong nor-westers which had fanned the flames.

The fire blackened rows of shrubs which cut ghostly silhouettes against the charred canvas of the hillside.

Trees which bordered Lynn and Paul Bennett’s property were scorched to their tips some 10-15m above the ground.

Burnt vegetation lined the Bennett’s property and flames had come within 20m of their home.

Fire Service duty officer Mort Shepherd said the fire had threatened to grow yesterday afternoon until a change in weather favoured fire fighters.

Two hurt in plane crash Two people were seriously injured after a light plane crashed Saturday afternoon.

Police said emergency services were called to a small private airstrip in Pukekohe about 2pm where a plane classed as a microlight had crashed.

The two occupants, both experienced pilots aged 61 and 63, were taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.

Police said the microlight appeared to have crashed while landing, but the cause was yet to be identified.

Weather conditions were fine and the light plane was professionally constructed, police said.

Civil Aviation Authority were advised and would follow-up with the pilot and passenger.

The owner of the microlight was among friends and flying enthusiasts at the scene when the crash happened.

Challenge for unions Stu Oldham

A

n amendment to labour laws that removes guaranteed rest and meal breaks provides further impetus to bad employers and challenges unions to up their game.

Unions say the Employment Relations Amendment Act removed hard-won conditions and lets bad employers be even worse. Worse still, it would make collective bargaining even more difficult in an age where union membership is the exception rather than the rule.

There is a degree of self-preservation in unions opposing legislation that allows employers to refuse to join, or to opt out of, multi-employer collective agreements. Unions have pushed hard for such agreements and the new law threatens years of work.

The Act ends open-ended strikes while employers can deduct 10 per cent of an employee’s pay for partial strike action.

This attacks one of the tools workers use when negotiations collapse. With a price attached, partial strike action might not be palatable for workers who will weigh up what they will lose with what they hope to achieve.

There is now no statutory minimum time for rest or meal breaks. Employers have to give workers breaks or provide “compensatory measures”, but how that will work is unclear.

The Government says it is patronising to assume workers will not be able to negotiate fair compensation. But then, it is patronising to apply a broadbrush assumption that the power divide in some workplaces is easy bridged.

Mid Canterbury has very low unemployment and an appetite for people to fill skilled jobs. We are small enough to know who the “bad” employers are and what constitutes a good deal in the local market.

Canny employers will be loathe to abuse the latitude afforded by the new legislation.

Maintaining meal breaks, or compensating fairly for their loss, may be a small price to pay for having the skills they need to thrive.

Bad employers will still squeeze their workers. The challenge for unions will be to engage with these workers and enfranchise the people it warns will be taken advantage of.

As a ratepayer who takes one rubbish bag down every 2-3 weeks, and as the bins are owned by the council, I presume I can leave the wheelie on the kerb and take my rubbish down as usual and drop it in the bin?

century ago this last weekend, New Zealand troops and their Australian friends sailed together for the battlefields of World War I. Prime Minister John Key and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott marked the occasion in Albany, near Perth, where that first contingent of troops left from. It was the first time New Zealand and Australian troops had ever deployed together.

On November 1, 1914 nearly 8500 Kiwi men were aboard the convoy of New Zealand and Australian ships that departed for Egypt. The Albany Convoy Commemorative Event honours them and the more than 90,000 other troops and nurses who later followed in their footsteps during the 1914-1918 First World War. The Australians and New Zealanders from this first convoy went on to fight on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

More than 2700 New Zealanders lost their lives serving as part of the Australia New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) that landed at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.

Anzac Day next April will be a key milestone of New Zealand’s centenary commemorations for World War I, which was one of the most significant events of the 20th Century and had a deep and lingering impact on New Zealand society.

Ten per cent of our population of one million served overseas – more than 18,000 died and over 40,000 were wounded or fell ill. Nearly every New Zealand family was affected.

New Zealand’s centenary commemorations include the opening next year of the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington. The park will be our lasting legacy to all service men and women who have fought for this country.

Prime Minister John Key was in Albany, Australia, to mark 100 years since New Zealand and Australian troops deployed together in World War 1.

troop departures, theatre and musical performances, museum and art gallery exhibitions to academic lectures, digitisation of family mementoes, and television documentaries and dramas.

Amongst these is a website project which aims to provide background information on each of the 69 men from the Methven area who died during the First World War or soon after discharge from service and are listed on the Mt Hutt District Memorial Arch.

The project will also compile a list of other soldiers who

left New Zealand for overseas service and returned. Some of those had no prior association with the district but settled in Methven and the surrounding area at some point later.

The World War I centenary is not only an opportunity to remember and reflect on all New Zealanders’ service and sacrifice, it is also a time to better understand what we stood for and why.

Through our experience in this conflict, New Zealand’s identity and values became more distinct at home and abroad.

I encourage all New Zealanders to take part in the centenary programme to better understand our past and how it still shapes us today – whether you reflect on the nature of war, remember family members who served, visit a memorial, or think about how your community was affected by events long ago.

It is also an opportunity to pay tribute to our more contemporary veterans, recognising the courage and commitment of all men and women who have served for our country.

In brief Smugglers arrested Two Vietnamese men have been arrested at Johannesburg airport with a record haul of 18 rhino horns, weighing 41 kilos, during a stopover on a flight from Mozambique to Vietnam. “This is the largest haul of rhino horns seized in one operation in South Africa,” said a joint statement yesterday from South African police and customs officials.

Police said it was believed the horns, which were still intact, were removed from South African rhinos. The two Vietnamese, aged 25 and 26, were in police custody and are due to appear in court today.

Space dream lives on British tycoon Richard Branson insists his dream of commercial space travel is still alive, despite a spacecraft crash that killed a pilot and seriously injured another.

The pilots were flying the place for Virgin Galactic, whose SpaceShipTwo rocket plane was meant to carry tourists on short but expensive trips to space.

by SpaceShipTwo - marked the first time the spaceship had flown on a new kind of plasticbased rocket fuel mixture.

A team of federal investigators launched a probe of the causes of the accident, which dealt a devastating setback to the cause of commercial space tourism.

The crash was the second disaster to rock the private space industry in the space of a few days, after an Antares

rocket carrying supplies to the International Space Station exploded after take-off in Virginia on Tuesday.

Early theories about the causes of the latest crash have focused on the fuel, amid reports the company was repeatedly warned of concerns about its safety.

A rubber-based fuel was previously used.

Speaking to reporters after arriving in the California facility that had served as the hub of Virgin Galactic’s space program, Branson said safety remained his paramount concern.

“We owe it to our test pilots to find out exactly what went wrong, and once we’ve found out what went wrong, if we can overcome it, we’ll make absolutely certain that the dream lives on,” a grim-faced Branson told reporters.

“We do understand the risks

involved, and we’re not going to push on blindly.

“Safety has always been our number one priority,” he added before heading off to rally grieving Virgin Galactic staff at the Mojave Air and Space Port.

The surviving pilot, Peter Siebold, is now “alert and talking with his family and doctors”, plane designer and builder Scaled Composites said.

It named the dead pilot as 39-year-old Michael Alsbury, a father of two.

National Transportation Safety Board acting chairman Christopher Hart told reporters investigators hoped to find clues to the accident in data gathered by Virgin Galactic.

“This will be the first time we have been in the lead of a space launch that involved persons on board,” Hart said.

It was not immediately

known if a black box flight data recorder was installed on the doomed suborbital craft, though Hart stressed that test flights are usually documented with significant amounts of data.

Branson headed to California within hours of the crash, which saw the company’s suborbital SpaceShipTwo break apart and hurtle to the ground shortly after it had detached from a mothership at an altitude of around 13,700 metres during a test flight.

Experts say the accident will delay the advent of commercial space tourism by several years.

Virgin Galactic had hoped to start ferrying wealthy customers to the edge of space in 2015, charging $US250,000 ($NZ320,800) per person for a ticket on the company’s sixseater vehicle.

Briton held over Hong Kong murders Hong Kong police are questioning a 29-year-old British man who works for Bank of America Merrill Lynch after the grisly discovery of two female corpses, including one in a suitcase, in his apartment.

The women were found dead on the 31st floor of the residential block in the popular expatriate district of Wanchai in the early hours of Saturday morning - when many revellers were out celebrating Halloween.

Police were called to the scene where they found a naked woman with knife wounds to her neck and buttock in the living room.

The other woman was decaying inside a suitcase on the balcony.

Police said yesterday that a man remained in custody but had not been charged.

He works for Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a securities trader, a source familiar with the matter said.

The woman found in the living room, described by police as a foreigner aged between 25 and 30, was declared dead at the scene, with the cause thought to be a cut to her throat.

The victims are believed by police to be sex workers of Southeast Asian origin, local reports said.

One of the victims was thought to be a 25-year-old Indonesian, the government in Jakarta said, adding that its consulate in Hong Kong was

co-ordinating with the police to identify her. A resident described the smell that had been emanating from the building as “disgusting”.

“It was the smell of a dead body. Maybe the police were moving it,” said the man, who lived on the 11th floor and declined to give his name.

Police said the man they were questioning lives in the apartment and that he had been the one to call officers to the scene.

Ebola treatment France is treating a United Nations employee who contracted ebola in Sierra Leone. “This person, who worked in Sierra Leone in the fight against ebola, has undergone a secure medical evacuation by specialised aircraft,” the ministry said. The victim has been placed in isolation under high security in an army training hospital in Saint-Mande near Paris. A French nurse, who worked for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Liberia, was treated for ebola at the same hospital in September and recovered.

Energy drinks banned Lithuania has enacted a ban on selling energy drinks to anyone under 18, in what officials in the Baltic country claims is a global first. “It’s a revolutionary development the world over: we didn’t find a single other country to have this kind of ban,” health ministry official Almantas Kranauskas said yesterday. “Most countries only have recommendations. We are the first.” Under the law which parliament adopted in May, selling energy drinks to minors is now punishable by a fine of up to 400 litas ($NZ175).

Fiji quake A major earthquake has hit in the south Pacific, about 140km northeast of Fiji’s Ndoi Island.

The US Geological Survey says the 7.1-magnitude quake registered at a depth of 434km. No tsunami warning was issued, according to the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. Fiji is located in the so-called Ring of Fire area of the Pacific Ocean basin, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

In most corners of the world, an Ashburton person can be found. So the Guardian’s Erin Tasker decided to track some of them down. This week it’s Ben Rae who is a research scientist at the University of Oxford, in the UK.

Ben moving closer to home B

en Rae wasn’t always cut out for science.

He entered school science fairs, but wasn’t a star.

Today though, he’s a research scientist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom working on multi-million pound projects.

He’s come a long way from his days at St Joseph’s School and Ashburton College, and playing soccer for Eastern and cricket for Technical.

“I was a regular underachiever in the science fair with projects that normally had more to do with burning something than with science. Nonetheless, I was always interested in science – especially at Ashburton College.”

He credits a number of “outstanding teachers” for guiding him down the scientific path he loves today, although it wasn’t always easy.

“It can feel a little isolated to grow up in Ashburton where the farming industry has such an emphasis, so I was lucky to get the chance to attend different kinds of science events. The most important one was the National Science and Technology Forum at the start of Year 13; this two-week science programme based at universities and research institutes around Auckland showed me the wide array of scientific jobs and disciplines that were available.”

Had it not been for funding from the Ashburton Rotary Club which allowed him to attend, he might not be where he is today.

Ben left New Zealand the day after he graduated from the University of Otago in 2007.

He had a first class honours degree in genetics and was bound for Canberra, Australia, where he and his now wife Gabrielle had positions as PhD students in the Research School of Biology, at the Australian National University.

“At the time I had never left New Zealand and I’d only been out of the South Island for a fortnight or so, so heading across the Tasman was a bit like going to see the world.”

Ben’s research project was the process of photosynthesis in the subset of algae called cyanobacteria; Gabrielle’s was to study the epigenetics of memory.

Their plans went no further than their PhD projects, but they caught the travel bug.

Today, the couple live in Oxford in the United Kingdom where

Ben is a research scientist at the University of Oxford, working primarily in the Department of Earth Sciences.

He studies the mechanisms that Haptophyte algae use in order to cope with fluctuating levels of carbon dioxide.

“A typical day at work includes setting up and maintaining algal cell cultures, which is the way that we grow large amounts of algae for analysis.

We grow algae in large containers of seawater that we’ve enriched with nutrients to enhance growth.”

The large cultures are then used for experiments and to answer vital questions.

But Gabrielle getting a job in Southampton meant they faced what they call the two-body problem.

“This describes the trade-off faced by scientific couples who have to balance career advancement with togetherness. The nature of life as a scientist can often mean travelling from place to place following shortterm contracts, and this is made especially difficult when your partner is also looking for jobs within a very small field of research.

“For many couples there is no chance that they can find their ideal jobs within the same city, and so many scientific couples spend considerable time apart.

I know of couples that have spent greater than five years separated by the Atlantic.”

Ben describes Oxford as an eye-opening experience, with centuries of learning behind it.

“Oxford has beautiful old sandstone buildings, with tiny alleys, ancient pubs, and dusty cellars and libraries but we have to remember it’s also the home of the Morris Motors factory in Cowley. It’s a two-faced city with the height of academic pageantry and grand buildings in the centre of town, with grimy industrial suburbs to the east.”

It’s all part of what makes Oxford fun.

“Here, it’s not uncommon to overhear pub arguments about particle physics or genetic engineering, or even medieval poetry – there are even people in my department who study the volcanoes of Venus.”

Ben said they had experienced a different side of England than Kiwis who lived in London.

“We’ve had access to the highlights of London, being only 50 minutes away by train, but we haven’t had to deal with the concrete jungle or crowding on a daily basis.”

The couple spend a lot of time in southern England, in small towns where they enjoy the many public walking tracks and cycle ways among the beautiful old towns – a great way to spend summer weekends.

“We’ve also had the fortune – or misfortune - of taking a beach holiday on the Devon coast. The rain made for a miserable weekend, but as the rain went on we came to the unfortunate realisation that British beachfronts are a series of pubs and games arcades for a good reason. It’s stories like these that lead us to take most of our holidays elsewhere in Europe.”

Earlier this year they returned to New Zealand to get married and one day they would

like to return for good. Until now, the UK has been best for their careers.

“We work with and learn from the best academics at the best universities in the world.

Our jobs here have really opened our eyes to the large scale that science can work on, with both Gabrielle and I working with collaborators in several countries, on multi-million pound research projects.”

With a job back in Australia in the pipeline though, the couple will soon be closer to home.

“We’ve had the realisation that home and family are so important to us. We hope that we can continue our careers in science as well as being in close contact with New Zealand.

“Some day in the future we could be in the position where we can start our own laboratory or research programme in New Zealand, but until then we could be living almost anywhere in the world. That’s just the scientific life.”

After 11 years living away from home, Ben still misses his family and friends.

“You always know that your family isn’t really that far away because you can talk via Skype or phone-call, but in the long run I’d prefer to be able to pop in and see people without any hassle.

“Something that I really regret is that I moved away to university when my brother was five years old, so I’ve never really lived with him and he’s also grown up without me.”

He also misses the friendly, relaxed lifestyle in New Zealand.

“Living in the UK it’s an easy joke to say that we miss the sun or miss summer, but I really do miss extreme weather of all types. While there are some differences between summer and winter in the UK, it’s all a bit of a grey morass of cloud and drizzle.

“On the other hand, the UK has some really nice Christmas and winter traditions that make the (nine-month) slog through winter a lot more bearable. There are German and Austrian-style Christmas markets with mulled wine and hot chestnuts, and there are beautiful Christmas lights and decorations that seem much more natural in winter than in summer. These markets are fairly short-lived however, and mulled wine could be nature’s most effective headache inducer.”

ibbons of bright green grape leaves alternated with golden stone walls as far as I could see along the steep banks of Portugal’s Douro River.

Cantilevered steps led up hand-stacked dry stone walls to narrow ledges, where the schist rock had been crumbled, also by hand, to make the soil. The terraces, planted with rows of vines, basked in the early summer sunshine.

Tony Smith was showing me around his Quinta da Boa Vista estate outside the winemaking town of Pinhao, with 42 kilometres of walls, some nine metres tall, supporting vines at least 80 years old.

“Vines thrive when they suffer a bit,” he said.

No kidding. These mountainhugging terraced vineyards produce one of the most recognisable wines in the world and the most visible export of this economically struggling country: Port, or vinho do Porto in Portuguese, from its namesake harbour city at the Douro’s estuary, 130km down river from Pinhao.

In June, on my fourth trip to the region, I explored the port cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia

Giovanna Dell’orto obviously can’t get enough of Portugal, returning for his fourth trip to the home of port wine. (often simply called Gaia), the city on the opposite riverbank from Porto, and then drove up the Douro to visit three vineyards near the towns of Baiao and Pinhao.

Holding a glass of 20-year tawny port at the Ramos Pinto lodge in Gaia, the house head winemaker and general manager Joao Nicolau de Almeida smiled at the dark amber swirls.

“The most humanised wine,” he called it, because, from stone-breaking to the constantly changing blends over years, it’s “people’s work, not just nature’s”.

Tawny was De Almeida’s first wine - at age six at his parents’ dinner table - and first school holiday job, when his father sent him to work in the family warehouses as punishment for bad marks. Over the last 30 years, De Almeida has been a leader in studying and modernising Douro winemaking.

The story of port, just like the resilient Douro grapes of which it’s a blend, continues to

be one of human creativity.

“Port-tonic?” a waiter offered as I sailed the Douro between the monument-crammed historic centre of Porto and the wine cellars directly across the river in Gaia during the St John’s Day regatta of rabelos, the traditional boats that were used to transport wine barrels.

The trendy cocktail, made with white port, seeks to attract younger drinkers, said Rui Cunha, a Porto-based winemaker and great-grandson of Adriano Ramos Pinto, the house founder.

Already in the late 19th century, he commissioned risque Art Nouveau advertisements of port as “a temptation”, including a glass-holding snake slithering up Eve as Adam watches. The ads are on view at the company’s museum.

But for all its indulgent luxury reputation, port’s origins are backbreakingly earthy, stemming from rocky, steep terroir that couldn’t be more different from the gently rolling hills of Bourgogne, Chianti and the

Barossa.

In the 1600s, English traders deprived of French wines turned to Portuguese producers, and, one story goes, added brandy to the full-bodied reds to preserve them on their sea voyage - making port.

By the mid-1700s, parts of the Douro valley - beginning near the town of Peso da Regua, about 100km upstream from Porto - became a demarcated region, its vines and wines highly regulated to protect indigenous grapes like the prized touriga nacional.

The landscape was unchanged until the 1980s, when port shipping companies started buying land upstream and innovators like De Almeida introduced vertical planting and larger terraces alongside the traditional ledges to mechanise some of the work.

The latest trend has been bringing Douro winemaking closer to its country roots. The same Douro grapes blended for port are now being used for quality-certified table wines

with a more universal, and inexpensive, appeal.

As you travel up river from Porto, just before the Douro region, you cross the southernmost corner of another Portuguese demarcated wine zone, the generally cooler and wetter vinho verde one. In the granite hillsides around Baiao and Regua, it produces mostly a dry, mineral white.

“Vinho verde is a growing segment,” being less alcoholic and a better fit with light foods, said Smith.

During a Saturday lunch at Bom Retiro, Ramos Pinto’s quinta near Pinhao, friends and I used bacalhau, roast beef, Serra da Estrela cheese and custard as excuses to try five bottles - white port, white and red wine, and vintage and 20year tawny port.

The latter’s flavour lingered in my mouth like an exquisitely buzzy blend of caramel and dried nuts. All around me were the grapes that went into my glass, hand-picked from plants growing on those hot handcarved stone terraces - monuments to a gruelling feat of human ingenuity well worth toasting, even if you only drink water.

Topliners to miss ODIs At least four frontline New Zealand cricketers, including captain Brendon McCullum, are expected to miss the limited overs matches against Pakistan next month to avoid burnout during the World Cup summer. England just miss While England players were adamant they were denied a final minute try that would have tied up their Four Nations rugby league match against Australia their coach Steve McNamara wasn’t so sure. The Kangaroos triumphed at AAMI Park 16-12 yesterday to avoid elimination from the tournament but England winger Ryan Hall almost levelled the match with seconds remaining.

Hall, who had scored earlier as England took a 12-4 halftime lead, looked to have dived over the top of Greg Inglis to get a finger to a grubber kick in-goal. Video referee Bernard Hopkins ruled there wasn’t downward pressure, with disappointed prop James Graham telling on-field referee Gerard Sutton: “That was a f***ing try”.

McNamara wasn’t convinced.

“The referee on the field gave no try and the evidence has to be conclusive and whether that was or not I’m not 100 per cent sure,” he said.

T20 heroics desert Coldstream

A week after winning the Twenty20 title for the season, Coldstream’s senior cricket side came back down to earth with a thump in the first round of the 45 over Pritchard Shield competition on Saturday.

Taking on Allenton for the third time in eight days – the two sides met in the final round and the final of the Twenty20 competition last weekend – Coldstream fell to a two-wicket loss in a low scoring match.

Having won both of last

weekend’s Twenty20 matches, Coldstream was sent in to bat but this time failed to fire, all out for just 89 in 24.5 overs.

Only two players managed double figures – Jay Houston with 30 and Jono Print 15, while Allenton’s Sean Strange took 4/13.

Allenton also found the going tough at the crease though, losing their first wicket with just two runs on the board. They continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, thanks largely to the efforts of Coldstream’s Richard Print – who took 4/12

Further down the Ashburton Domain, Tech and defending Pritchard Shield champions Methven were doing battle – a battle that didn’t last long.

Methven batted first and was dismissed for just 59, a total which Tech reached with just one wicket down, with Henry Cook 24 not out, and Joe Peters 20 not out. Harry Jones was the best of Tech’s bowlers taking 3/6 off four overs.

Out at Lauriston the two Lauriston sides played the final

game of the first round, and it was the A side which came away with a convincing 163 run victory, set up by a 180 run partnership between Bevan Richan (120) and Matt Haworth (76).

Lauriston A made 272/9 off its 45 overs, thanks largely to the sixth wicket partnership.

The A side were struggling at 5/59 when the pair came together at the crease.

In reply, Lauriston B were all out for just 109, with Sithun Jayatilleke the only real shining light scoring 28 with the bat and taking 4/32 with the ball.

ABs achieve aims

By GreGor Paul Forget for a minute what the Soldier Field test meant for the long term future of American rugby – it achieved plenty for the short-term future of the All Blacks.

The number one objective of the 23 sent out to do battle was to set the tone for the rest of the trip: the challenge was to deliver focused, disciplined, clinical rugby.

The challenge was largely met.

The potential was always there for things to turn a bit pass and giggle – for the All Blacks to lose their shape and structure and consider the whole business a whopping great laugh.

There was never a hint of the All Blacks being anything other than ruthless in both mind-set and execution and it’s apparent that they hopped on the plane last week, determined to drive their last four performances to a higher level.

In the background is the World Cup and this whole idea they are simulating what they are likely to encounter in the back half of next year’s tournament.

If there was one overwhelming lesson they learned in 2007 it is that they can’t doddle through the pool rounds – running up cricket scores and playing props in the loose forwards as they did – and then be slow to make the mental transition into preparing for the brutal world of knock-out rugby.

The intensity has to be the same regardless of the opposition and that’s why the attitude shown against the USA was the most pleasing aspect for the coaches.

The benchmark has been set high – now the team to play England has to take it higher.

decisions for this week’s test at Twickenham that little bit harder, will also have pleased the coaches.

Patrick Tuipulotu was arguably the most impressive – managing to be supremely physical against a USA pack that had size, power and passion.

A bit like Charles Piutau last year, something has suddenly clicked with Tuipulotu and he clearly feels a degree of comfort in the test arena.

His ability to stay on his feet and drive through tackles was the best feature of his work and there will be significant

interest among the coaching panel to see if he can achieve the same results off the bench against England next week.

Charlie Faumuina was another to press his claim for game time against England, showing as he did the remarkable range of skills he possesses.

The show-stopper, though, was Sonny Bill Williams.

Playing off such a good platform and with so much space, the full extent of his athleticism and vision could be appreciated.

That bit was never in doubt, though and what will have won him accolades from the coaching staff is how simple he kept his game.

There were no trademark offloads or high risk plays. Just straight running and big defence.

“I think that’s the biggest thing I have learned since coming back to rugby,” said Williams.

“The opportunity [to offload] is usually there but it is about picking it. I’ll back myself to pass it when it is on.

“In my last stint in rugby Steve Hansen was on at me about when to pass it when to hold it. I am still coming to terms with that.”

Williams reckoned the knock he took to the hip will be fine and he, like the rest of the midfield contingent on tour, is eager to be involved against England.

“I think everyone in this squad is vying to be in that 23 and I am no different.

“You want to play at the highest level against the best opposition. Next week will be one of those occasions. We are all trying to be part of it.

“There is talent everywhere in the squad and that is what makes the All Blacks so good – there is talent everywhere.

“You can’t let off the gas for one second or someone will take your spot.”

Wallabies hold Barbarians in thriller By liam FitzGiBBon The Wallabies have kicked off their European rugby tour and the Michael Cheika era with a thrilling 40-36 win over a lively Barbarians side at Twickenham.

A crowd of 54,000 was treated to a hugely-entertaining contest featuring 11 tries, with the Wallabies needing to survive a late fightback to clinch

their ninth straight win in the fixture. The match was played in great spirit and the win finally provided some good news for Australian rugby following a month of controversy.

But while the Wallabies looked good at times in their first match since Cheika was hired to replace Ewen McKenzie, the performance also highlighted the work ahead.

With Australia trying to adapt to a new style under the NSW Waratahs coach, their defence was found wanting at times and the attack lacked cohesion.

As expected, the Barbarians showed a willingness to experiment, thrilling the crowd with long throws, flick passes and overhead kicks. They scored the first try through Blues

winger Frank Halai, and Adam Thompson also crossed in the first half. Slade put the Barbarians ahead with the only penalty of the game but Australia forged ahead through Horne, McMahon and Foley tries.

South African Marnitz Boshoff followed Cummins over the line in the last five minutes but the Barbarians fell just short.

Kirwan backs Cummins Barbarians coach John Kirwan reckons Australia should do everything they can to get winger Nick Cummins back from Japan in time for next year’s World Cup. Cult hero Cummins, nicknamed the “Honey Badger” scored a try in an eyecatching performance in the Barbarians’ 40-36 loss to Australia and said afterwards the experience had made him even more hungry to return to international rugby. After working closely with the colourful 27-year-old in camp in London, All Blacks great and former winger Kirwan believes getting Cummins back would be a huge boost for the Wallabies next year. “I think he’s a very special character in our game,” Kirwan said.

Tough start for Te’o Ben Te’o’s Irish rugby union debut lasted just 19 minutes when he broke his arm in Leinster’s 33-18 win over Edinburgh. The former rugby league star was injured in an innocuous tackle which was the only sour point for the home side in the Pro 12 clash. Less than a month after winning the NRL premiership with South Sydney, Te’o made his highly anticipated union debut playing at centre for Leinster, but he was taken from the field as they went on to make it four straight wins in all competition.

Thomson enjoying life Another week in exile for Ashburton ex-pat Adam Thomson, another stamp in his passport. The latest was that of the British Embassy, following his journey to London to play with the Barbarians. His former All Blacks colleagues might be gearing up for next year’s World Cup, but Thomson has no regrets about his chosen path. Last week, he enjoyed six days of downtime on the Greek island of Santorini and next week will be back in Japan, where he will finish the season with the Canon Eagles.

The 32-year-old is enjoying life out of the spotlight. He doesn’t get mobbed at his local sushi bar in Tokyo and, as he prep-ares to move to join the Queens-land Reds early next year, there are no plans to return to New Zealand any time soon.

US media reaction The US media’s reaction to the All Blacks’ 74-6 win over the USA Eagles in Chicago yesterday has been muted. In fact, it was hard to find much comment on the game at all. Here’s what we managed to unearth a couple of hours after the final whistle: New Zealand’s All Blacks made their USA rivals mostly blue on Saturday, turning what was billed as a rugby exhibition into a clinic on their way to a 74-6 win ... Playing with only a handful of regulars in the starting lineup, the defending World Cup champions went ahead three minutes in on a try up the left sideline by Nathan Harris. The Golden Eagles countered with their best sustained ball possession of the entire match, repeatedly testing the center of the AllBlacks’ defense before settling for a penalty goal from Adam Siddall to close to 5-3. That was the last moment the match was competitive.

Adams stars for Thunder

Steven Adams enjoyed his best outing of the new NBA season to help Oklahoma City to a 102-91 win over the Denver Nuggets yesterday. Adams scored a season-high 13 points to as the injury-stricken Thunder grabbed their first win of the campaign at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma. Missing star pair Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder played their home opener with only an eight-man rotation.

But Adams, starting at centre after deposing Kendrick Perkins, shot six-of-10 from the floor and made one-of-two free throws, also chipping in three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. - NZME

Big week for Phoenix The Wellington Phoenix could complete a dream start to their A-League season during the next five days. Two wins from the first three matches was a nice way to get things going but they have two games this week and another six points would leave them buzzing.

They meet the Melbourne Victory across the Tasman tonight and despite their abysmal record against the Victory in Australia, Melbourne have been wrecked by injuries and suspension after last week’s FFA Cup clash with Perth, which should give the Phoenix a dash of hope. Liverpool staggering Liverpool’s fragile confidence suffered another blow as they suffered a 1-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle United ahead of Tuesday’s encounter with Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Manager Brendan Rodgers was far from critical of players who have won only twice in seven league games, but a repeat of yesterday’s unconvincing performance would certainly result in an embarrassing night at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea survive scare Eden Hazard’s penalty enabled Chelsea to preserve their fourpoint lead in the Premier League with a narrow 2-1 win at home to London rivals Queens Park Rangers yesterday. Diego Costa returned for Chelsea after four games out with hamstring trouble and he saw his side take a 32nd-minute lead when Cesc Fabregas teed up Oscar to bend in an exquisite shot. Charlie Austin equalised for QPR just after the hour when he beat Thibaut Courtois with a clever back-heel from Leroy Fer’s cross-shot to claim his third goal in two games.

But Hazard gave Chelsea victory in the 75th minute.

Juventus stay clear Champions Juventus restored their three-point lead at the top of Serie A yesterday with a 2-0 win at struggling Empoli, while rivals Roma slumped to a 2-0 defeat to a rapidly improving Napoli. In Saturday’s late game Inter were stunned 2-0 at Parma. Andrea Pirlo and Alvaro Morata got the goals for Juve in the second half in the first meeting between the two sides since 2008.

Boost for the batters Budding young Mid Canterbury softballers had a chance to learn from the best yesterday when Black Sox player Tyrone Bartorillo came to town. Bartorillo was invited to Ashburton to conduct a coaching session which 15 under-13 to under-19 Mid Canterbury players were hand-picked to attend. Mid Canterbury Softball’s Heath Lyttle said Bartorillo was a big batter so the focus of yesterday’s coaching session was on batting skills. Allenton extends winning ways Allenton continues to set the pace in Mid Canterbury’s open grade tennis competition, after a 5-1 victory over Methven on Saturday.

Led by number one Andrew Hunt, Allenton’s win was set up by wins in both doubles matches, with Hunt combining with Luke Glendining to beat Flynn Ness and Hamish Hood, and Edwin Dargue making his A grade debut and teaming up with Bryn Looij for a win over Ben Wright and Erin Connelly-Whyte.

saw Hunt down Ness in the top singles, losing just three games along the way, while Dargue and Looij also won well.

Wright saved Methven from blushing with a hard-fought win over Glendining, putting his side on the board.

The win sees Allenton continue its run at the top of the table, but Hampstead is hot on their heels - just one point behind – after a 5-1 win over Dorie/Fairton.

Dorie/Fairton’s Rhys Cromie and Willy Edgar were beaten in the top singles clash

by Hampstead’s Adam Wilson and Connor Brosnahan, while Sam Bubb and Christal Brosnahan beat debutant Aaron Reid and the evergreen Dennis Taylor on the adjacent court, putting Hampstead up by two.

Cromie came out firing in the singles though, only allowing Wilson one game and putting Dorie/Fairton on the board, but that was as far as the winning went for his side.

In the day’s other match, Tinwald beat Hinds/Mayfield 4-2 after a close side which

saw Tinwald’s Aidan Mitchell and Jayden Cromie succumb to James Watt and Stacey Hopwood in the top doubles, while Angus Rollinson and MaryAnne Thyne evened the ledger with a victory over Sarah Bailey and Chilean farmer Franco Yanez.

In the battle of the young giants on the front court, Hinds/ Mayfield’s number one player Watt was too good for Mitchell, winning in straight sets, but Tinwald won the remaining singles matches to take the win.

■ ROWING

Promising regatta for novice rowers Ashburton’s newest rowers are happy following a promising showing at the weekend’s Aoraki Rowing Regatta at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel.

Aimed at novice, first year crews and 50/50 combination crews, the Ashburton Rowing Club took a large number of rowers to the regatta and they made a total of 23 A finals and seven B finals.

Coach Steve Beveridge said he was happy with the performances at a regatta which may have been smaller, but provided a good platform to build from.

The weather tried its best to intervene in the weekend, stopping rowing for a short time on Satur-

day afternoon before whitecaps turned back into perfectly flat water, and high winds seeing action called off early yesterday before crews braved the roads home.

Mr Beveridge said it took four hours for his car-load and trailer full of boats to make it home from Twizel due to high winds reducing their speed to just 40km/h in parts.

It’s hoped the weather will play along more this weekend when Ashburton’s Lake Hood hosts the Canterbury Pennants Regatta on Sunday.

Mainly featuring eights, fours and quads, a number of Ashburton crews will take part in the regatta on home water.

But Dunlop is hoping that the popular stayer can go one better than his two runner-up finishes when he contests his fourthstraight Melbourne Cup. Asked what victory would mean having come so close

before, Dunlop, who trained champion fillies Snow Fairy and Ouija Board, replied: “Everything”.

“It would probably be the greatest victory of my training career,” Dunlop said.

“But I think it would mean a huge amount for (owner) Ronny Arculli.

Lucia right on track Trainer Kris Lees believes Lucia Valentina has come on from her Caulfield Cup placing as the mare prepares to tackle uncharted territory in the Melbourne Cup. The 4-year-old started favourite in the Caulfield Cup but was beaten

by Admire Rakti, charging home after she was forced widest on the home turn. Lucia Valentina has had two gallops at Sandown this week and Lees said the daughter of Savabeel was on track for Tuesday.

Kiwis dodge a bullet

BY MICHAEL BURGESS The Kiwis have got out of jail against Samoa, scoring a late try to win 14-12 and avoid what would have been a shock loss.

The home side trailed for almost the entire match on Saturday, and only a Shaun KennyDowall try in the 76th minute rescued the Kiwis.

As much as the Kiwis were disappointing – and this was poor display from Stephen Kearney’s men, several levels down on their effort last week – the Samoans were magnificent.

It was an even better display than they produced against England and better goal kicking (they missed all three conversions) would have seen them take the game.

If the game plan for the Kiwis was to deny the Samoans early momentum and belief, they failed.

With the home side hot on attack, Peta Hiku attempted a pass which didn’t need to be thrown.

Triple victory reaps top reward It was hot, it was windy, but the conditions didn’t hamper the racing at Ashburton Speedway yesterday.

It was a full day of action on the track, with nine different grades and three Mid Canterbury titles on the line.

The crowd pleasing sidecars were one of the titles up for grabs, and the experienced duo of Aaron Ray and Bevan Nuttridge won all three races on the day to take the title.

They were followed by Mick Parker and Chris Booth in sec-

ond, and Brett Moyle and Karl Haddock in third.

The Mid Canterbury adult ministock title went the way of one of the few girls in the field, with Shinnae McNally of Christchurch beating second placed Daniel Cox and Craig

Butterick. In the race to the youth ministock title George Watson came out on top ahead of Ethan Rowland and Taylor Wakelin.

The next meeting on the track at Ashburton Speedway will be a big one – the DHL Speed Week

which will again feature wellknown golf caddy and speedway enthusiast Steve Williams, among the many saloons and drivers who will make their way to Ashburton from around the country. That will take place on December 7.

Breakers produce worst performance of the season
