70-100 kids still need hep A jabs BY MYLES HUME

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Health authorities want Mid Canterbury parents who have not vaccinated their toddlers against hepatitis A to take action so they can be confident the epidemic will not worsen. Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey believes at least another 70-100 Mid Canterbury children between one and four need to get free public-funded hepatitis A vaccinations to reach a 70 per cent immunisation rate in the age-group. “I think there will be a number of reasons why some parents have chosen not to vaccinate their children,” Dr Humphrey said. “One might be they are unaware that it’s free for children between one and four, bad weather could have messed up plans during our vaccination clinics or some parents might need a bit of encouragement.” Six vaccination clinics last month held on top of clinics in local preschools resulted in 1014 preschoolaged children – the age-group believed to be largely responsible for

the spread of hepatitis A – being vaccinated. No new cases have emerged since late August 28. Dr Humphrey said if up to 100 more toddlers were vaccinated, it would create what experts call “herd immunity”. “Once you get to a certain level of vaccination the spread is automatically stopped,” he said. “In terms of a deadline, I would prefer to see everyone done by December, but I just want parents to get in when they can. The sooner we get everyone covered the sooner we can be confident we have beaten this infection.” Ashburton Baptist Early Learning Centre manager Lorraine Bennet said about six families at her preschool decided not to vaccinate, and those children would be noted down as a precaution if there was a major hepatitis A outbreak. “Some parents had sick children at the time and decided to follow up with their GP after the vaccination clinics, some didn’t because of religious reasons while others don’t believe in immunisations,” she said.

Carnivore discovery Paleontologists yesterday unveiled a new dinosaur discovered in the US that proves giant tyrant dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus rex were around 10 million years earlier than previously believed. A full skeletal replica of the carnivore — the equivalent of the great uncle of the T. rex — was on display at the Natural History Museum of Utah alongside a 3D model of the head and a large painted mural of the dinosaur roaming a shoreline. It was the public’s first glimpse of the new species, which researchers named Lythronax argestes. The first part of the name means “king of gore”, and the second part is derived from poet Homer’s south-west wind. The fossils were found in Utah in November 2009. – AP

■ NCEA

Chanaide’s hard work pays off Students By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

The tears made it clear just how much being named Mount Hutt College’s 2013 dux meant to Chanaide Fulton last night. As fellow pupil and friend Darren Ritchie went up to accept the runner-up dux prize, the reality set in for Chanaide that her diligent study and motivation may have finally paid of this year. When her name was finally revealed for the prestigious prize, it didn’t take long to sink in for teen who struggled to

hold back the tears minutes later when she met with her father Graeme and mother Cynthia. “Last year I was the top Year 12 student and ever since then it has been my aim to become the dux. I was so surprised to get it because there was just so much competition,” the former Allenton School pupil said. Chanaide’s friends have her on about her strong work ethic, saying she studies six hours a day. Although that isn’t entirely true, doing “the hard yards” is what she believes put her in good stead for the dux title and

a raft of other awards including academic prizes in accounting, statistics and chemistry. She also put forward a special mention for teacher Bevan Clark who has been influential in her success in science-based subjects. “The key to success for me, study really hard and do what’s required to get what you want, and also get along well with your teachers,” she said. An Ashburtonian at heart, Chanaide works on a farm in her spare time and hopes to combine her passion for accounting with her evolving love

for rural life. After she gets her NCEA examinations out of the way, Chanaide will be embarking on an agriculture degree at Lincoln University, majoring in accounting, in the hope of becoming a rural accountant. All the while she will be trying to keep up the other side of her life. Chanaide has a keen passion for squash, waterskiing, snow skiing and was also involved with the school production to round off what was a memorable 2013 at Mount Hutt College.

Words of wisdom from Kiwi actress By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

It took some heckling from an old friend’s son and a slight tinkering of her busy schedule to prompt a Mid Canterbury homecoming for star Kiwi actress Robyn Malcolm yesterday. The Outrageous Fortune actress was able to give a lastminute thumbs up to Mount Hutt College this week to feature as the guest speaker for the college’s senior prizegiving last night. Ms Malcolm is a longtime family friend of Nicola McDowell-Holmes, the mother of

college head boy Alex Holmes. And after a few phone calls, she decided it was a moment she could not miss. “Nicola and I have known each other for years and for me to be here sitting on stage next to her grown-up son and give a speech at his prizegiving is just a wonderful thing,” Ms Malcolm, 48, said. After sticking around to mingle with pupils and parents afterwards, Ms Malcolm headed back to Christchurch to stay with family before she heads to the United States for work. It was a fitting homecoming

for the actress who has deep roots in Mid Canterbury. After moving to Ashburton as a youngster when her dad landed a job at Ashburton College, she spent her high school years close to her dad at college before she left early in her last year, unsure of where to go next. “The thing is, no one knows what’s going to work in the future, no one knows what’s around the corner, so if you’re sitting in a place like I was back then it’s not a bad situation, it can be a very creative place,” Ms Malcolm told Mount Hutt

College senior pupils last night. She went on to speak about her “slack” time at university when she decided not to sit her final exams. But her passion for drama never wavered. “Whether you’re succeeding or failing, if you have a connection to what you do then that’s almost unbreakable. It’s about igniting the pilot light within you for what you love to do, because when that is on it doesn’t go out easily.” To round off, she tasked Year 13 pupils to find their “pilot light”, and always seek to improve.

gear up for exams By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury secondary school pupils are not the only ones in overdrive just days out from the first 2013 NCEA examinations. While more than 500 of the district’s senior college pupils brush up on their final study preparations, the district’s two secondary schools are undergoing their own last-minute touches as they gear up for 9.30am Monday when the first Mid Canterbury external NCEA exams begin. Behind the scenes, exam centre managers and school staff are shifting desks, sourcing chairs and revising the New Zealand Qualifications Authorities’ (NZQA) stringent examination rules. Mount Hutt College deputy principal Kris Canham said it was a mountainous effort to prepare schools for exams, but luckily the college had already began to put steps in place. “Fortunately, this week we have our Year 10s doing their own exams so some of our rooms are set up. “Material has to be pulled down off classroom walls, desks need to be in single file with 30 desks in a room, and all that takes a lot of arranging because a lot of classrooms aren’t set out like that.” NZQA exam centre managers are also in the process of working out the logistics of which staff will oversee exam rooms, assess where candidates will sit, hand out their test and ensure the safe-keeping of completed exams, along with a long list of other responsibilities. Although scholarship drama takes place this morning with no local candidates, Level 1 English, Level 2 German, Level 3 Samoan and scholarship statistics will be among the first exams held locally Monday. It is estimated up to 143,000 pupils across New Zealand will be sitting 120 NCEA and scholarship examinations with Level 1 English set to be the biggest exam with tens of thousands of candidates. Mount Hutt College has about 160 pupils sitting NCEA, with Ms Canham predicting Level 1 Maths to be the largest exam for the college. Their results will be marked by some of the 1700 people employed to assess their exams with results expected to be released online by mid-January.

Carers for teenagers sought

Ads pulled over talkback discussions

By Sue newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton has a need for people who can open their homes and their hearts to teenagers, says social worker Chris Devos. She is the woman charged with finding people with the skills and the time to care for children who cannot live with their parents and while she usually has enough families to care for younger children, finding carers for teens is a tough job, Ms Devos said. “Ideally we like to have a pool of carers who have a range of skills so that we can best match a young person with the best caregiver to meet their needs” As New Zealand celebrates foster carers’ week, she said she was proud of the individuals and families who formed the district’s strong carers’ network, but more people were al-

In brief

MORE INFO ■ Anyone interested in more information about becoming a foster carer should contact: Chris Devos, chris. devos001@cyf.govt.nz ways needed. Currently in Ashburton there are 46 children in care. The district has a pool of 41 caregivers, with more than half of those caring for children to whom they are not related. Over the past year, the number of children in care has increased. Poverty, domestic violence and parents with poor parenting skills were all contributing factors to children coming into care, she said.

“I would love to have about six caregivers who are committed to teenagers. I’d set up a good support network for them and this would benefit the community. At the moment, if it’s a teenager, I don’t have a local caregiver available in Ashburton and they may have to be placed with caregivers out of the area. “Where possible children are kept with siblings, but there were occasions where it was beneficial for one to be placed separately. In situations where children can’t remain at home we look to wider family to provide care but often this was not possible,” Ms Devos said. Foster care could be short term, longer term or permanent through the Home for Life scheme. This gives a foster child permanent status in a family but still allows contact with

that child’s family, she said. “We should never underestimate the loss children have; it’s still their family, it’s still what they know. The most successful outcomes for children in care in the long run are where they still have a sense of their family, still have access to them. If a child grows up with a lost identity they generally don’t do very well in life.” There is no blueprint for a good caregiver, but it was important to have plenty of patience, plenty of time, good parenting skills and the ability to stay the distance when the going got tough, Ms Devos said. Potential caregivers can be individuals or couples and they undergo a robust training and assessment regime. Once accepted they also have ongoing support and training, she said.

Life in prison A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 15 years for murdering his mother. David Adrian Holl was sentenced in the High Court in Blenheim yesterday for the murder of Robyn Grace in January this year. He was also sentenced on a second charge of causing injury with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to a second person on another occasion. Holl had pleaded guilty to both charges at a court appearance in September. - APNZ

Stephen Mark Whittaker, who has since changed his name by deed poll to Stephen Scipio, claiming delusional Italian links, will now be kept as a special patient at a Christchurch hospital. He said on September 27, 2011 he “just went crazy” and stabbed Bronwyn Sadler 26 times with a large hunting knife in the brutal, fatal attack at the home they shared in Spreydon, Christchurch. Getting ready for disco fever By SuSan SanDyS

Boy George, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol and other 1980s icons will be coming out of the closet this weekend for the Wake Me Up Before You Go Go disco night. Those getting ready for the event include Mel Jack (left) and Deanna Watson. The fundraiser is being held by Big Little Theatre Com-

pany Inc, a registered charity which enables Big Little Theatre Company actors to bring their productions to the stage. Spokesperson Jackie Heffernan said two shows were put on each year, each costing up to $20,000. She was excited about Saturday’s disco, to be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. While ticket sales were go-

ing well, she said there were still more that needed to be sold. At just $25 including food platters it would be both an affordable and fun night out. A charity auction would feature amazing prizes including a luxury weekend in Queenstown at a five-star hotel, a Tekapo Hot springs family pass, and a $1000 interior design package from Redmonds.

By Patrice Dougan A number of companies have pulled their advertisements from RadioLive as the backlash against two of its talkback hosts’ discussions on the Roast Busters scandal continues. Willie Jackson and John Tamihere landed themselves in hot water over an interview on Tuesday with an 18-yearold girl called ‘Amy’ who said she was friends with one of the gang’s victims. Despite being forced to apologise on Wednesday, they continued discussions about the subject on their Willie and JT Show yesterday, resulting in a guest panelist storming out live on air, in the midst of a heated row. Columnist Matthew Hooton told the presenters he thought their interview with Amy was “morally and journalistically cretinous”. He was told to “shut your mouth or you’ll be out of the studio” when he accused the presenters of being supporters of controversial ex-cop Clint Rickards, who was accused of sex crimes in the 1980s. “I’m out of here,” Mr Hooton replied, leaving to shouts of “well get out then, get out”. He appeared as part of a political panel with commentator Matt McCarten. It is understood Mr McCarten will also not return to the show. Just hours after the outburst, a number of companies announced they would be withdrawing advertising for the noon to 3pm timeslot of the Willie and JT Show, and some from RadioLive completely. ANZ and Yellow said they were pulling all their ads from the station, while Freeview said it would make sure its campaigns did not air during the show. AA Insurance has indicated it will do the same. MediaWorks said it could not comment on advertising campaigns because “these details are commercially sensitive”. “But RadioLive would like to reiterate that we in no way condone the actions of the ‘Roast Busters’ or any violence against women,” it said. “We apologise unreservedly for any offence or distress caused to listeners, clients or others by Willie and JT’s interview with Amy.” - APNZ

Paratyphoid contained to one case

A paratyphoid scare in Ashburton last month has been contained to just the one case as health authorities confirmed the disease has not spread. On October 11, it was revealed a child under 12 months was diagnosed with paratyphoid – a potentially fatal disease that is highly contagious. It prompted health authorities to alert parents of children going to the same preschool as the affected child. A Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) spokesperson said the child had not attended the preschool while being unwell, and had not spread the disease. “We expect the child to make a full recovery. We have standard procedures to manage the risk of transmission, including isolation and laboratory testing,” Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said yesterday. An investigation found the child had travelled overseas last year but due to the extensive time they have been back in Ashburton that has been ruled out as a possible source. “It remains unclear from our investigations how the child contracted paratyphoid,” Dr Humphrey said. Paratyphoid fever is a bacterial disease similar but milder than typhoid and is highly contagious, passed on through faeces, similar to the spread of

Dr Alistair Humphrey

hepatitis A. However the two illnesses are not related. The disease is believed to infect 10-30 people in New Zealand a year, with most cases introduced while overseas, mainly to southern or eastern Asia. Its symptoms include a high fever, stomach pains, constipation and flat, rose-coloured spots. “It can be acquired from food of drink that have been handled and contaminated by a person shedding the bacteria or if contaminated sewage gets into water,” a CDHB health sheet said. An infected person is usually treated with antibiotics and are not allowed to return to preschool, school or work until they have had clearance from a medical officer.

Cooking up a nutritious storm Mid Canterbury dairy farm workers are being encouraged to think slow cookers rather than takeaways when they come home tired at the end of the day. A group of immigrant workers was in Jen’s Kitchen in Ashburton this week learning how to use a slow cooker to make a fulfilling meal. Tutor Jen Sheppard said dairy workers were often tired because of their milking schedules but it was important they ate healthy and nutritious food. Two groups in her kitchen included people aged between 18 and 25 from Holland, Ireland

and the United Kingdom, all living and working on local dairy farms. “They are learning really basic cooking skills, with slow cookers and rice cookers, and learning about how to cook meals that are fulfilling. They can go out to work on the dairy farm and have something cooking in the slow cooker.” Mrs Sheppard gives advice on meals suitable for slow cookers, and best ingredients. “A lot don’t know about the products in our supermarkets either, so it is a real learning curve.”

Among the meals she teaches them to make are devilled sausages (sausages with a gravy base and sliced potatoes on top), corned silverside with vegetables, and lasagna. She said there were plenty of other meals time-strapped people could cook in their slow cookers and food could often be prepared the night before. Dairy workers could simply turn the cooker on in the morning and a healthy meal would be ready when they returned. The cooking classes are being supported by Grow Mid Canterbury.

Students put Methven school up for sale By MylEs HuME

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

Mount Hutt College’s Year 13 pupils took end-of-year pranks to the next level this week by putting their own school up for sale in the local newspaper. The mischievous joke was the talk of the town this week, and even had deputy principal Kris Canham commending its creativity. The small advert appeared in the Snowfed bulletin and said the buyer would receive land and buildings as a whole package or in smaller sections, about 7.6 hectares of “attractive grounds” along

with IT equipment and 485 pupils. After a few inquiries the Guardian tracked down Olivia Molloy, the mastermind behind the prank. “It was actually an idea I found on Google, we thought we better do something for the end of the year and I found ‘sell your school’. I thought it was a great idea,” the 17-year-old said. “But I think the teachers were a bit upset they weren’t up for sale,” she joked. Ms Canham said school staff took the prank in good spirits, and no members of the public were fooled.

Tomorrow night’s episode of hit Australian television drama series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, will feature Ashburton’s own Scott Smart. Mr Smart will hit New Zealand television screens yet again, after securing a role in show which is based on author Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher Murder Mystery novels and revolves around the personal and professional life of Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis), a glamorous private detective in 1920s Melbourne. Mr Smart appears in episode four of season two – airing on TV1 at 8.30pm tomorrow night in New Zealand. His latest acting gig comes hot on the heels of a role on long-running Australian series, Neighbours, where he played Seamus Illich, a gay accountant who was new to the fictional town of Erinsborough in suburban Melbourne. Mr Smart now lives in Melbourne, where he is successfully chasing his acting dream. He said being a part of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries had been exciting. “It was a great experience. We were able to shoot in some really interesting locations in and

around Melbourne and the cast and crew were great to work with and get to know,” he said. Mr Smart was not able to divulge much detail about his role in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, but according to the TVNZ website tomorrow night’s episode focuses on the gaiety of St Kilda’s famous esplanade being marred by violence of gang warfare, and the police who struggle to control it. Home town music gig By GaBrielle Stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

A gig at Arcadia this weekend will bring one Ashburton musician back to his home town for the first time in several years. Peter Malthus will play bass at the bar tonight as part of three-man band The Elevators, who will be performing a range of classic pub rock covers, from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix. The singer and musician has come a long way since the days he started his first heavy metal band, Cyanide, at Ashburton College – and since moving to Christchurch at 18 has played in a range of rock, metal and even Irish bands, including popular Christchurch band

The Valves. He attributes a lot of his passion for music to his time at Ashburton College, where he said he had plenty of musical training under a fantastic former head of the music department, and enjoyed a strong musical culture. “It was competing it Rockquest with our high school band that did it for me. That buzz after we got up and played at the town hall was the best thing I had ever experienced,” he said. He said he had considered moving back to Mid Canterbury, but the work in Christchurch was likely to keep him in the city for a few years yet. The Elevators will play live at Arcadia in Ashburton from 9pm tonight.

Story had to be told By GaBrielle Stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

For Ashburton author Sharianne Bailey, her first book, Kiss of the Wolf Spider, was simply a story that needed to be told. Based on a true story, Kiss of the Wolf Spider tells of one woman’s journey through a childhood of abuse, and her journey to finding triumph and second chances. For Mrs Bailey, the story began in 2005, when she met Jane – the woman whose story she would tell. It was a chance encounter, after she won a free haircut at Jane’s home-based salon. They got to talking about writing, and Jane asked her if she had ever edited a book before. “She brought out a manuscript, 40 pages in large print. It was our first meeting, but she let me take the pages home with me. ‘Promise you’ll come back,’ she said, ‘promise you’ll bring them back to me’.” She took the pages home and read them through that day, and knew that this was the book. “I always wanted to write a book, but nothing like this. I wanted to write the world’s best love story, and abuse wasn’t something I ever wanted to know about. It’s just too sad. “But the funny thing is that this is all about love. There was a love story there the whole time, it just wasn’t the one I was

Winners will be drawn on Monday. anticipating.” It took five years to research and write the book, and another three to edit it, working closely with Jane. Although the book is a novel, with fictitious characters and situations, all the feelings and emotions are real, and come straight from Jane’s thoughts and memories. For Jane, the motivation was simple. To be able to help and inspire other women who might be going through the same things she went through. For Mrs Bailey, her goal was slightly different – to open people’s eyes to a story that was increasingly common, in the hope that their question would no longer be ‘how can this happen?’, but ‘how can I be part of the solution?’. “The more I delved into the field, the more I realised that the circumstances around Jane’s story weren’t anything special. It was a textbook story. ”

■ DISTRICT COUNCIL

District council calls time on paper war By Sue NewmaN

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

However far from reading like a textbook, Kiss of the Wolf Spider is engaging and written in simple language. It is available in one volume as Kiss of the Wolf Spider, or in two parts as Unspoken and Redeemed. And although the story is a dark one, in the end the story is about hope, triumph and second chances. And it is with that victory that Kiss of the Wolf Spider begins: “I write my story, not because misery loves company but because victory deserves to be shared. I don’t ask for your pity, but hope that when the truth is told, my story, our story, will free a multitude of prisoners from a shared consciousness of guilt and shame…”

Ashburton’s team of district councillors is about to go high-tech. For decades councillors have fought a paper war as they have juggled weighty meeting agenda and countless reports. Knowing the value of always having reference material on hand, most have built up mountains of paper in their homes against the day when they might need to check a fact or a figure from the past. The paper war is about to disappear, or at the least, it will be minimised. Tablet devices have been ordered for councillors and these are due to arrive in the new year. After a period of training, the district’s councillors and mayor will hold their

meetings, 21st Century style. While the switch from printed agenda to tablets is planned for February, they may be used in tandem for a short period while councillors become familiar with their use. The initial outlay for the tablets is expected to about $14,000, but there will be significant savings in printing costs. In the three months from July to September more than 24,500 pages of information was printed for councillors. This equates to about $6300 worth of printing each year. If time, collation and distribution costs are included, the cost for a year’s worth of printing is about $12,000. The council anticipates it will recoup the cost within two years.

OUR VIEW

Applaud our teens Sue Newman

SENIOR REPORTER

W

hen it comes to teenagers we have plenty to celebrate in Ashburton. It’s unfortunate that often the only ones we hear about in the media are the bad guys, the ones who are off the rails and getting into trouble, but they’re a very small minority. Their anti-social antics tend to smear their peers as well, with the word teenagers often conjuring up a less than positive image. And that does a huge disservice to the vast majority of young people who are good, decent hard-working kids, focused on getting ahead. The end of the secondary school year is a good time to reflect on all that is positive about the next generation of soon-tobe adult Kiwis. As prizegiving ceremonies are held around the district, the efforts of these fine, young teenagers are recognised by their schools, their families and their peers. Awards are made for academic, sporting and cultural achievements but they’re also made to students who have achieved in other ways, as good citizens, as decent human beings. While the academic, sporting and cultural awards acknowledge a huge effort by prizewinners over a year, the awards to the all round good guys in the student world are equally as important. The downside of prizegiving ceremonies is that not every student’s efforts can be recognised, not every student can be a winner; there are simply not enough awards to go around. However, the families of students who may not make it onto the podium should also be celebrating their child’s achievement. Every teenager who gets through a solid year of hard work at school is worth celebrating. Our kids are under so much pressure from peers, society, the media and just life in general, that keeping on track is an achievement in itself. We have plenty to be proud of in the Ashburton District with the fine young people we turn out. Many of our students go on to achieve in the national and international workplace, but many more stay closer to home, carving out good solid careers and raising well rounded families. Top achiever or not, the efforts of every one of our students is worth celebrating.

YOUR VIEW Shameful and disgusting I am writing to let you (the Guardian) know what I thought of the cartoon that was in last Thursday’s paper. I was absolutely shocked and disgusted to think you would place such gutter garbage in it for all to read. Have you considered the innocent young people reading this cartoon and the curiosity and questions of what it is all about, asking a mum and dad who may not yet have noticed it first? It makes me squirm. You know for years the local newspaper as been known as The Rag; I am now calling it a Filthy Rag. M Ranson

Public sales v public displays

T

here have been some hot topics this week. The hottest of them all is the fireworks debate (see what I did there?). Public sales vs public displays. Although I have fond childhood fireworks memories I am in the public displays only camp, but it’s not something I’m overly passionate about. I am concerned with children’s safety around fireworks, but then things can go wrong at public displays too. Mostly I feel for the animals and I agree with Jessica who said this on my Facebook page: “No problem with them on fireworks night when I expect them to be happening so I can have the dog inside. It’s when they happen randomly until they next go on sale that’s the worst. I think the only way to avoid that is public displays only sadly”. I was stoked to hear that there were no Ashburton Fire Brigade call-outs on Tuesday night! For the fans of public sales, I’m sorry to say the feedback I got was 90 per cent wanting public displays only. Well done the Rakaia Lions, I understand their display on Saturday night was another well run event. Another of the hot topics this week on air has been the lowering of the drink driving levels. Prime Minister John Key says cabinet has agreed to lower the blood alcohol limit for all drivers. The limit will fall from 0.08ml per 100ml of blood to 0.05ml. From the research I’ve done this brings us into line with a lot of Western countries including Canada, but there they have stronger consequences for transgressions. The minimum punishments for impaired driving and driving over 0.08% are: ■ For the first offence: $1000

fine, 1-year driving prohibition; ■ For the second offence: 30 days jail, 2-year driving prohibition; ■ For the third or subsequent offence: 120 days jail, 3-year driving prohibition Once again I had some awesome feedback on this topic, Sarah said, “Start ensuring that losing your licence means it’s gone completely and not available for work and then we’ll see people rethink! When people start losing their jobs because of stupid decisions more may think twice about their habits”! And while we are talking consequences, John sent this email to me. “About a zillion years ago in 1966 I spent a summer holiday climbing in the Lap Alps with a few just-out-of-school friends. Travelling up through Sweden we of course got friendly with the local youngsters and they told us of the Swedish answer to drink driving. “The police did not have breath test road blocks or anything like that - but - if you had an accident and were convicted of driving under the influence then it was a mandatory sentence of a year’s hard labour on the roads, no matter who you were or your position in society, there was no getting out of it if you were convicted. They built their roads then by hand. “The state supported your family - paid mortgages school fees - food etc. Your employer was not allowed to fire you [having to keep your job open till you came back], BUT you went and lived in a labour

camp and worked on the roads. If you could prove you had a heart condition or something similar then you might be allowed to drive a dumper truck but other than that you wielded a shovel for a year. “They had a ZERO re-offending rate and the Swedes were the darlings of the insurance industry with the lowest premiums in the world. “Of course they also had the most comprehensive teaching system for drivers in the world so that when you hit the road on your own, even as a 15-yearold, there were no excuses for bad driving anyway - but that is another story. “I have no idea what they do now though, but it could be worthwhile finding out how they have got on after all this time. “Take care out there.” I can tell you John, Sweden and Norway are still famous for a culture intolerant to drink driving. The rules in both allow only a tiny margin of

error, with a limit of 20mg, and particularly severe penalties (including prison) for those in breach of it. Personally I think why not make it ZERO with fines and demerits up to 50mg and then serious consequences for those over that mark. I know I’ve said many a time “I’m sure I could have one more before I’m over”, it’s a grey area. Depending on your gender, size, food intake etc, the limit moves. So let’s make it more black and white! Final hot topic this week is the Roast Busters. These BOYS don’t deserve any media coverage, but I wanted to say, if the consequences were substantial would we be reading and hearing about them at all? Hoo Roo.

In brief $1.2m found in boot Police have seized about $1.2 million in cash alleged to be the proceeds of crime after stopping a car for defective brake lights. Police say they stopped the car at Sefton, in Sydney’s west, about 6.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday and allegedly found a cardboard box in the boot containing a large amount of cash. The car’s occupants - a 34-year-old Camperdown woman and a 36-year-old Riverwood man - were charged with recklessly dealing with proceeds of crime, and goods in custody suspected of being stolen. - AAP

Al Qaeda claims credit for deaths By Rukmini CallimaChi Al Qaeda’s branch in North Africa claimed credit yesterday for slaying two French radio journalists who were abducted in northern Mali at the weekend, according to a statement published online. It was an admission of responsibility for a kidnapping that experts said didn’t fit the terrorist network’s usual standards of operation. A Mali intelligence official involved in the case said investigators believe the kidnapping was the work of a lower-level jihadist trying to return to the good graces of the al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb after being accused of stealing money. The militant is believed to have been reporting to Abdelkarim

al-Targui, a prominent Malian in the al Qaeda branch, the official said. Radio France Internationale’s Ghislaine Dupont, a senior correspondent, and Claude Verlon, a production technician, were kidnapped on Saturday. Hours later, their bodies were found next to the abductors’ suspected vehicle, which had broken down, outside the town of Kidal, where they had just finishing interviewing an ethnic Tuareg rebel leader before being taken. The al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claim of responsibility was reported on the website of Sahara Media, a portal previously used by the jihadists. It said the journalists were killed in retaliation for the “daily

crimes” committed by French and Malian forces in northern Mali, where France launched a military operation in January to flush out the Islamic extremists. “The organisation considers that this is the least of the price which (French) President Francois Hollande and his people will pay for their new crusade,” the statement attributed to the terror cell says. The website identifies the militant brigade responsible for the killings as that of Targui. Targui is a native of the Kidal region and one of the few Malian nationals who has risen to prominence in the al Qaeda branch, which is led almost exclusively by Algerian extremists. He is believed responsible

for the previous kidnappings of two French nationals, Philippe Verdon and Serge Lazarevic, who were taken from the town of Hombori in northern Mali in 2011. Lazarevic remains in captivity. Verdon was executed earlier this year. Targui also is believed to be responsible for the execution of Michel Germaneau, an elderly Frenchman who died in al Qaeda’s hands in northern Mali in 2010, according to Jean-Paul Rouiller, the director of the Geneva Centre for Training and Analysis of Terrorism and an expert on al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Dupont and Verlon were grabbed by four armed men in a four-wheel-drive vehicle at around 1pm on Saturday. - AP

■ PHILIPPINES

Super typhoon approaches Philippines Survivors of a deadly earthquake have fled their tent shelters as mass evacuations got under way in the Philippines ahead of a super typhoon strengthening in the Pacific Ocean. Authorities warned yesterday that Typhoon Haiyan, with wind gusts exceeding 330km/h, could cause major damage across a vast area of the central and southern Philippines when it makes landfall today. “This is a very dangerous typhoon, local officials know where the vulnerable areas are and have given instructions on evacuations,” state weather forecaster Glaiza Escullar told

AFP. “There are not too many mountains on its path to deflect the force of impact, making it more dangerous.” Haiyan had maximum sustained winds yesterday of 278km/h, and gusts of 333km/h, according to the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre. The Philippines is battered by an average of 20 major storms or typhoons each year, many of them deadly, but Haiyan’s wind strength would make it the strongest for 2013. The state weather service also warned the typhoon was continuing to intensify. Escullar said the typhoon, which was advancing with a

giant, 600km front, was expected to hit areas still recovering from a deadly 2011 storm and a 7.1-magnitude quake last month. They include the central island of Bohol, the epicentre of the earthquake that killed more than 200 people, where a local official said at least 5000 people were still living in tents while waiting for new homes. “The provincial governor has ordered local disaster officials to ensure that pre-emptive evacuations are done, both for those living in tents as well as those in flood-prone areas,” the official, Bohol provincial administrator Alfonso Damalerio, told AFP.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also said local governments had ordered evacuations and class suspensions in lowlying and landslide-prone areas on the southern island of Mindanao. Escullar said Haiyan was likely to spare Mindanao’s southeast, where Typhoon Bopha left about 2000 people dead or missing in December last year. Haiyan is set to hit Samar Island, about 600km southeast of Manila, around 9am local time on Friday and cross over to the South China Sea to the north of the island of Palawan late on Saturday, Escullar said. - AFP

Wildlife authorities say koalas are being found in suburban Sydney backyards after being driven from their homes by bushfires and land clearing. National Parks Association ecologist Dr Grainne Cleary says the the association has received “a few” reports of koalas in western Sydney. Dr Cleary says the koalas may be being forced into urban areas by the destruction of their usual habitats. It’s estimated that NSW has between 26,000 to 32,000 koalas. - AAP

Postcards auctioned British postcards sent home by German boy scouts that were used by the Nazis when planning to invade the country, have sold for £1000 ($A1700) at auction in London. The postcards were used to build up a geographical picture of Britain and form part of a rare set of eight booklets which were sold by the Dreweatts auction house yesterday. The dossiers also include many maps and photographs, and were to be used by strategists planning “Operation Sealion”, the 1940 mission to invade Britain. - AFP

Radioactive poison Polonium, which Swiss scientists conclude was likely to have been used to poison Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 2004, is a highly radioactive material rarely found outside military and scientific circles. Also known as Radium F, it is a rare but naturally occurring metalloid found in uranium ores that emits highly hazardous alpha, or positively charged, particles. Before being cited in connection with Arafat’s death, the substance had been named in the case of Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy and dissident who died in a London hospital in 2006 showing symptoms of polonium poisoning. - AFP

Iraq attacks kill 15 A suicide bomber has detonated an oil tanker rigged with explosives at a police station north of Baghdad, killing seven policemen, while attacks elsewhere left eight dead. Iraq is mired in its worst violence since 2008, with more than 5500 people killed this year despite major military operations targeting insurgents and tightened security measures. In Wednesday’s deadliest attack, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-rigged tanker in front of police station in Muqdadiyah, in restive Diyala province, and detonated it at the entrance, police and a doctor said. - AFP

Boeing features more personal space with greater passenger capacity and range. Air New Zealand’s 787 programme director Kerry Reeves said the aircraft would initially replace Boeing 767s on shorthaul routes around the Pacific, Asia and Japan. “We’ve designed the aircraft for the route network so that means the premium (seat) count on the aircraft is probably less than what you’d see on other longhaul aircraft,” he said. The mock-up is believed to be the only full scale one outside

Boeing’s home base in Seattle and will be used for crew and staff training as well as familiarising the travel industry and customers with the plane. New inflight entertainment systems were more compact. ‘We’ve taken advantage of new inflight entertainment hardware and that’s allowed us to introduce new monitors and also allowed us to slim down the back of the seat considerably from those which have had inflight entertainment. That allows much more personal space.” - NZH

Mighty River produces 17 per cent of New Zealand’s power.

NZX also coincided with a turning point for bond yields, which had affected Mighty River and other utility stocks around the world. The company’s poor showing on the market was despite a strong financial showing in the year just past. Mighty River’s net profit was $114.8 million in the year ended June 30, up from $67.7m a year earlier and well ahead of its prospectus in April when it forecast a profit of $94.8m. At yesterday’s meeting, the company said it expects to meet its prospectus forecast earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and fair value adjustments of $498 million in the year ending June 30, 2014, and anticipates paying a first-half dividend of 5.2 cents per share. The power company lifted net profit guidance $35 million to $195 million due to changes in

the value of its financial instruments and cheaper than expected interest costs. The Government sold 49 per cent of Mighty River Power in a share float in May as part of its so called mixed ownership model of partial privatisations that will include the smallest of the state’s generators, Genesis, next year. Mighty River produces 17 per cent of New Zealand’s power - 90 per cent of it coming from renewable hydro and geothermal sources. Withers said Mighty River now had a good ownership mix with a diverse share register including a large retail shareholding base of 28 per cent alongside New Zealand institutions with 10 per cent. Offshore investors comprise around 10 per cent and the Government has remaining cornerstone holding of around 52 per cent. - APNZ

Shareholders in for the long haul Shareholders in the newly-floated Mighty River Power appeared to be philosophical about the company’s poor showing on the share market at the company’s first annual meeting as a listed entity in Auckland yesterday. Shares in the state-controlled energy company have failed to fire, despite a strong start when they listed on May 10, closing yesterday at $2.19 compared with their $2.50 per share issue price. But their lacklustre performance drew just one “please explain” question from the floor, to which chairwoman Joan Withers said the stock was “obviously not where the board wants to see it”. Withers said that after talking with shareholders her “sense” was that they were in Mighty River for the long haul and that they were “not too disturbed” the lack of performance in the share price. Mighty River shares hit a postfloat low of $2.15 last month, despite the presence of share buyback initiated by the company. Withers said initial uncertainty over the future of the Tiwai Aluminium smelter’s power contract and the threat of a Labour Greens alternative power policy had weighed on the stock. She told the meeting that the price reflected the market’s view, but at times there appeared to be clear disconnect between the company’s share price and its performance. Mighty River’s debut on the

Air New Zealand has unveiled a cabin mock-up of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner and has revealed it will debut on the Auckland-Perth route. The aircraft will be fitted with 302 seats with 18 lie flat seats in the business premier cabin, 21 new design seats in premium economy and 263 in the two economy cabins. The seats fitted in the mock cabin near the airline’s Auckland headquarters are made by United States-based firm Zo-

diac are noticeably slimmer than those on comparable planes and a test in the tightest economy seat showed passengers are able to work on laptops, something that is difficult on smaller planes used on trans-Tasman routes. The airline is due to get the first of its 787-9 series planes around the middle of next year and it will start carrying passengers to Perth from the middle of October. It is a stretched version of the model that’s been in service since 2011 and is nearly 7m longer and

■ BROADBAND PRICING

In brief

Chorus shares plunge again The Government’s decision to probe Chorus’ finances before making a call on intervening in broadband prices has done nothing to calm the market as the company’s share price plunged to a new low yesterday. Chorus’ shares were down almost 8.4 per cent to $2.12 - the lowest point since it listed on the NZX in 2011. The company’s share price fell 6.84 per cent on Tuesday and another 5.5 per cent on Wednesday, closing at $2.315. More than $200m has been wiped of the company’s value since Tuesday’s announcement from the Commerce Commission to cut wholesale broadband prices by 23 per cent. Chorus was valued at over

$1 billion by market capitalisation at the close of the NZX on Monday. Yesterday, it was worth $840 million. The Government has commissioned an independent assessment of Chorus’ financial position and its ability to deliver ultra-fast broadband after the infrastructure company said a cut to broadband prices could put funding for the project in jeopardy. Communications and Information Technology Minister Amy Adams yesterday said the Government had already been

working with “external consultants” to “carry out an independent analysis of Chorus’ financial position”. “To complement this work, I have decided to seek an independent assessment at arm’s length from the Government,” Adams said. Adams has released a letter she has written to the company, advising it of the probe. “In order to properly assess the range of options before the Government, I have directed MBIE to work with Crown Fibre Holdings to commission independent advice to the Government of Chorus’ financial position and capability to deliver on its contractual obligations with the Government,”

Adams said. This review would look into the impact of the Commerce Commission decisions to cut wholesale broadband prices by 23 per cent on Chorus’ contractual commitments to deliver on the UFB build and RBI initiative. “As part of the review, the consulting firm would be asked to assess the scope for Chorus to manage the impact within the constraints of the reduced revenue, and if required, a range of alternative options,” a statement from Adams said. The independent report will be released publicly and once it is received the Government will then consider what to do next. - AP

New smartphone hits all the right buttons It’s a tough job launching a smartphone. Intense competition means you’ve really got to get it right if you’re to have any hope of making it. Sony’s Xperia Z epitomised this, creating a stir when it launched. Now Sony are going one better with its successor, the Xperia Z1. Sony seems to have really hit their stride in the smartphone space. Not only do their handsets sport the sort of design smarts we’d expect from Sony, but they’re also put some serious effort into its specs too. The Z1 has a very similar look and feel to the original Xperia Z’s black slab design. The most obvious difference between the Z and the Z1 are the rounded alloy edges of the Z1 which make it easier and more comfy to hold. Like the original, the Z1 has

scratch and shatter resistant Gorilla Glass 3 on its front and rear. The upshot of this is that the Z1 feels like solid phone with minimal Tupperware, giving it a distinctly premium finish. Like the Z, the Z1 is also waterproof and dust-resistant. This mightn’t seem like a terribly big deal given there’s already plenty of smartphones similarly element proofed, but where most tend to look like bloated plastic bricks, Sony have managed the near impossible feat of keeping the Z1 slim while making it tough enough to handle the odd swim. While the Z1 is marginally thicker at 8.5mm than the Z, it’s still some way from developing a middle aged spread. There are however upsides to its chunkier waist - for a start the Z1 has an incredible camera and a bigger 3000 mAh battery. This

was also done with quite a bit of thought as the Z1 feels as finely balanced in the hand as a high-end chef ’s knife. It makes a huge difference as you’re less likely to drop it when pulling it out of a purse or a pocket. While the Z1’s rectangular black finish might make it the sort of phone Darth Vader would keep on his utility belt next to his light sabre, it’s sim-

ple finish highlights its gorgeous 5” 1080p 441ppi LCD display. Sony have applied their years of experience in the display technology by including what they’ve branded a Triluminos panel that produces a much wider colour gamut. The net result is that the Z1’s display offers a significant improvement over the already great display in the Z. The standout feature of the Z1 has to be its camera. Thanks to the efforts of players such as Sony and Nokia, smartphones are finally challenging point and shoot cameras. Verdict - The Z1 ticks a lot of boxes. Not only does it pack more processing grunt than a bacon factory, but it is as you’d expect from a Sony product, exceptionally well built and has a distinctly premium feel about it. - AP

Scam proves expensive A Papamoa woman found herself sucked in by a con-artist claiming to be from Microsoft despite fending off dozens of phone calls from scammers in the past few months. And the mistake has cost her $1000 and “a lot of trauma”. The 73-year-old woman, who was still shaken by the incident and spoke on condition she was not to be named, was convinced her Microsoft computer licence had expired and agreed to pay almost $300 for it to be renewed last Monday. The man claimed hackers could get into her computer and carry out illegal activities, such as the distribution or pornography, in her name. - BOP

Twitter on Stock Exchange Twitter has set a price of $US26 for its initial public offering of stock, which means the company’s shares can begin trading today on the New York Stock Exchange. The price values Twitter at more than $18 billion based on its outstanding stock, options and restricted stock that will be available after the IPO. The pricing means the San Francisco-based short messaging service will raise $1.8 billion in the offering, before expenses. Twitter, which has never turned a profit in its seven years of existence, originally set a price range of $17 to $20 per share for the IPO, but that was designed to temper expectations. The company is offering 70 million shares in the IPO, plus an option to buy another 10.5 million. - AP

New domain names They’ve been typed into web browsers for decades, but domain name extensions such as “.com” and “.net” are suddenly facing serious competition. Nine new “top-level domains” have been introduced by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) - the global body responsible for regulating internet addresses. The new extensions - which include “.clothing”, “.camera” and “.lighting” - have been entered into the “root zone”, which is the central database for internet domain names. ICANN’s head of generic domains, Akram Atallah, called the expansion “the biggest change to the internet since its inception”. - AAP

Golfers in top form The Aorangi master’s golf team, featuring Ashburton’s Robbie Bell and Tinwald’s John Smitheram, has performed superbly over the opening seven rounds of the Freyberg Masters. Yesterday they were able to overcome Otago 3-2 and then Bay of Plenty 3.5-1.5 to be second overall with two rounds remaining today. On Wednesday they came home strongly to beat hosts Canterbury after both Jason Leary and Smitheram delivered crucial saves for par from five feet and 25 feet respectively on the last to win by 1up, handing Aorangi a 4-1 win, with Bell also winning his match-up 3/2. Local riders seek home glory Local pony rider Lucinda Askin is hoping the hometown advantage will give her something extra when she takes on the South Island’s best in the Pony Grand Prix at the Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ) 2* Ashburton Area Jumping and Showhunter Show this weekend. Askin is amongst hundreds of riders from across the island converging on the Ashburton Showgrounds for two actionfilled days of jumping and show hunter competition, covering training pony classes and low hunter at 60cm right through to the Horse Grand Prix.

One of the highlights of the competition, the Pony Grand Prix has attracted a small but quality field of nine starters, with riders having to step up to two-star competition for the first time this season, over a track designed by international Southland-based course designer Barry Manson. Askin will start as one of the favourites, following a string of handy performances with her starry skewbald pony Totem, who has just returned from an injury layoff, and newcomer Buckle Up, which is improving with every outing. But she will face some stiff

opposition from in-form combinations Steffi Whittaker (Halswell) on Moonlight Glow and Lucy Turner (Broadfields) on Tallyho Mystic, who have both had wins already this season, as well as a handful of others. A strong field is also assembled for the 2 Star Horse Grand Prix with the standout performer being Susie Hayward and her imported stallion Andretti, fresh from a spectacular win in the World Cup Round at Mystery Creek in Hamilton last weekend against the country’s best. It also features Mosgiel’s

Claudia Hay on Euro Sport Centavos and Georgina Power on Waldorf, both of whom have wins under their belt. Aside from the major championships, crucial points are on offer in the competitive ESNZ national jumping series’ including the Junior Amateur and Young Rider Series, the Jumping Championship Series, and the breeding age group series classes for five, six and sevenyear-old horses. Entries are strong across the board. Three rings of jumping and a show hunter ring will run both days, with close to 300 horses and ponies entered.

Stroud Memorial Trophy goes on the line By Jonathan Leask

jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

After successfully defending their Twenty20 title in Mid Canterbury senior cricket last weekend, the Tech Sharks turn their attentions to the Pritchard Shield with the opening round of 45-over competition tomorrow. The Sharks open the competition, which is a straight roundrobin, against the Tech Stags and the Tech derby has the Bevan Stroud Memorial Challenge

Trophy on the line, another trophy currently in the hands of the Sharks. The Stags got the bragging rights over the Sharks in the Twenty20, but with some momentum on their side and a trophy at stake the Sharks will be out to even the score. Two shield contenders square off at Lowcliffe as Coldstream host Allenton. Coldstream were runners-up in the Pritchard Shield last year, and semi-finalists in the Muir-

head Rosebowl while Allenton have made a strong start to the season being beaten finalist in the Twenty20 and are regularly a contender in the longer form of the game. After a disappointing showing in the shorter format of the game Methven will be hoping for a fresh start in the longer format as Lauriston, the defending Muirhead Rosebowl champions, make the trip along Line Road to play on the artificial wicket.

France up for big test

New partner for title defence BY JONATHAN LEASK

JONATHAN.L@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Andrew Hawthorne will defend his National Secondary Schools’ Golf Croquet Championships title with a new partner. The Ashburton College pair of Hawthorne and Adam Greaney became national champions earlier this year winning their way to and taking out the national tournament in Palmerston North. This week Hawthorne took the first steps towards the title

France operate at their best on raw emotion. They are at their best when they are seemingly hopeless cases. Then, the natural order of things tends to go out the window. For them, the test against the All Blacks at Stade de France on Sunday morning - the eve of Armistice Day - is a fantastic opportunity to turn the world on its head once again. Steve Hansen has named the most experienced line-up in All Blacks history - there are 853 caps in the starting XV alone - Hansen believes he his given them the best chance of maintaining their excellent 40-year unbeaten record in Paris. - APNZ

defence, but without Greaney. As Greaney will not be at school next year he is now ineligible to play, with the national championships again in April. Hawthorne has now partnered up with Laurent Fifield, and the beginning of another great partnership is under way as they won the playoff in Timaru on Wednesday night for the right to represent the South Canterbury Region at the Secondary School Nationals in Palmerston North next year.

Jackman returns to sevens duty BY JONATHAN LEASK

Mark Jackman has signed on with the All Blacks Sevens for another year, one of the 17 players to commit to the shorter-form. ing made a successful return from injury in the opening tournament on the Gold Coast last month. Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens was pleased with the calibre of players who have committed to the All Blacks Sevens over the next year. “This is a very strong squad with a core group of players who have performed consistently well, particularly in the

past season, together with some exciting young talent as we move towards the Olympics in 2016.” Eight of the 17 contracted players will only play sevens in the next 12 months, headed by captain DJ Forbes, Tomasi Cama, Sam Dickson, Gillies Kaka, Tim Mikkelson, David Raikuna, Lote Raikabula and Scott Curry. The newcomers to the list are

former New Zealand Under 20 and Southland back Marty McKenzie and Wellington speedster Ambrose Curtis, who made his debut at the Gold Coast Sevens. Waikato’s Declan O’Donnell and Joe Webber also return to the squad having last played in 2011 and 2012 respectively. The rest of the squad is Bryce Heem, Ben Lam, Waisake Naholo, Sherwin Stowers and Jackman.

Sports festival attracts impressive line-up BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Some of the biggest names in New Zealand multi-sport will feature at tomorrow’s South Island Sports Festival at Lake Hood. The day’s main event – a half ironman – has attracted a field of stars, including Coast to Coast legend Richard Ussher, six-time Ironman champion Chris McDonald, Challenge Wanaka winner Dylan McNeice, ITU professional Mike Phillips and John Newsome, who has his eye on a age group win in Kona – the world championships of Ironman. Leading the charge in the women’s field will be Methven woman Julia Grant, fresh from competing in Europe on the Ironman 70.3 circuit. Event organiser Daniel McDonald said 320 entries had

been received across the five events being run tomorrow – the half ironman, long course duathlon, sprint distance triathlon, half marathon and the 10km run/walk. The field for the half marathon was full, with an impressive line-up of 170 athletes, Mr McDonald said. “Arguably it’s the best line up in a half ironman in New Zealand,” Mr McDonald said. Competitors had been drawn to the Lake Hood event as it was a fast course. That’s because the swim leg is in the lake, meaning it’s unlikely to be too choppy, and the land based disciplines were on “pancake flat” land around the lake. Last year’s winning time was 4.02 hours, but tomorrow’s winning time was likely to be much faster, Mr McDonald said. “It’s a very fast course, probably one of the fastest in New Zealand, so they are coming to go fast.

“With the guys this year it will be a sub four (minute) easy.” Eighty will compete in the sprint distance triathlon, while among those competing in the half marathon will be Ussher’s wife Elina – also a Coast to Coast legend. Mr McDonald said it was great to have big names competing, but it was an event for everyone. “The reason we put it on is so that people can come out and have fun,” he said. And many people – including families – had taken that opportunity. Preparations done, now all Mr McDonald needs is for the weather to play along. The weather forecast for tomorrow is for cloudy conditions and a high of 16 degrees. Spectators are welcome to head to the lake to check out the action, with the first race – the half ironman – crossing the start line at 8.30am.

Steven Adams has produced possibly his best NBA performance to date, making his mark on fans, commentators and, particularly, opposition players. The Kiwi centre was a key contributor as Oklahoma City beat Dallas yesterday, playing pivotal minutes off the bench and earning the ire of eight-time All Star Vince Carter. Carter was ejected after throwing a flagrant elbow at Adams’ jaw, a cheap shot which the rookie took without a flinch. Adams drained the resulting free throws as part of his six points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes of the 107-93 victory. - APNZ

Reid ruled out The All Whites have suffered a major blow with captain Winston Reid ruled out of the World Cup playoff against Mexico next week. The defender injured an ankle in a West Ham training session and will miss the playoff matches as well as West Ham’s clash with Norwich this weekend. He travelled immediately to see a specialist in Holland to discover the full extent of the damage. Scans revealed he will be out of action for the next few weeks. It is a massive blow New Zealand, already huge underdogs for next Thursday’s match, but Reid was the one player that they could not afford to lose. - HOL

Big test for Fast5 The viability of netball’s Fast5 concept faces a major test in Auckland this weekend, with organisers hopeful of bigger crowds after a lukewarm reception last year. The shortened version is now in its fifth year and netball bosses had hoped that by now it would be gaining fans and viewer and spectator numbers would be up. Introduced in 2009, the Fast5 format had been slow to take hold. The rules were radically overhauled last year, cutting down the number of players to five and adding extra scoring zones to allow for a faster style of game. - NZH

Scott beats nerves Nerves hit him hard on the first tee but by the time Adam Scott nailed a birdie putt on the final hole of his opening round at the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast, the Masters champion was flying high. Scott put on a near-flawless display of driving in yesterday’s first day at Royal Pines, scoring a bogey-free six-under 65 to sit tied for second alongside Australian journeymen Matthew Ballard and David McKenzie, two shots behind Rickie Fowler after the 24-year-old’s sizzling morning round of 63. - AAP

Nadal seals top spot Rafael Nadal has guaranteed he will finish 2013 on top of the world rankings with a 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (8/6) victory over Stanislas Wawrinka at the ATP World Tour Finals. Nadal arrived for the prestigious season-ending event knowing two Group A victories at London’s O2 Arena would be enough to ensure he couldn’t be caught by secondplaced Novak Djokovic in the race for the number one ranking. The Spaniard achieved that aim yesterday in typically dominant fashion, beating Swiss seventh seed Wawrinka 24 hours after opening the tournament with a straightsets win over David Ferrer. It is the third time Nadal has finished a calendar year in pole position in the rankings and the first since 2010 - and he celebrated with a jubilant jig around the court. He is the first player to end a year at number one three years after his last season-

ending top spot. The 27-yearold’s straight-sets victory over Wawrinka also booked his place in the semi-finals of the Tour Finals, with one group match against Tomas Berdych still to come. Nadal’s return to the top is a remarkable achievement given he only came back in February after seven months out with severe knee tendonitis that threatened to cut short his career. “I had a lot of emotions today, it’s the perfect scenario to be the year-end number one,” Nadal said. “After missing this tournament last year, it’s been an unbelievable comeback. “Being number one at the end of the season is something really difficult as there are some unbelievable competitors out there. “But without my team behind me, it would be hard to think about achieving this, especially after what happened last year.” - AFP

Ashburton College softballers have stepped up to the big league this season. Players from the Ashburton College Flyers now compete in the Canterbury Softball Rookie League on Monday nights as part of an amalgamated team with Rolleston.

“To be able to play in the rookie league you have to be a Canterbury club, so we have joined up with Rolleston,” Mid Canterbury Softball president and Flyers coach Rob Flanagan said. “It’s a complicated marriage but it’s working out.” The motive behind the joint venture is to expose the local

Sharks to defend Stroud Memorial P16

boys to the next tier of softball above what they can get in the Mid Canterbury Revival League at Argyle Park on Saturdays. “It’s an experience thing for these guys as most of the team are 16 and we are up against 19-year-olds.” They had a deferred fixture on Wednesday night against the

Albion Rams, a side featuring three junior Black Sox, and were on the end of a 4-22 loss, making it a winless start after four games. “The league is basically split in half with four top teams that also compete in the premier grade on a Saturday and the other four teams.

“Being one of the bottom four we have modest performance targets, but we are learning from our mistakes and have been competitive.” The Ashburton-Rolleston side will have their best chance of a first up win against a fellow “bottom four” side in the Kaiapoi Dragons on Monday.
