Murder victim may have been moved

An Ashburton man whose body was discovered at a Christchurch address on Sunday may not have been killed there, police say.

A scene examination got under way in Christchurch yesterday at a second address believed to have been connected to the murder of the former Ashburton man.

The victim, aged 30, cannot be named due to suppression orders put in place when the 22-year-old woman charged with his murder appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

Christchurch Police Detective Inspector Greg Murton said yesterday they had launched a new scene examination at a Conference Street address, in central Christch-

urch. “Significant activity is believed to have occurred at this address, resulting in the death of the victim.”

Detectives and forensic experts executed a search warrant at the address yesterday and commenced an investigation.

A scene examination was also continuing at the Earnslaw Street address where the man’s body was lo-

cated on Sunday, and that was expected to be completed today.

A post-mortem was completed on the victim on Tuesday and his body had been returned to his family.

The woman charged with his murder was remanded in custody after entering no plea and will reappear in the Christchurch District Court on May 16.

Town worries dead whale will burst The 60-tonne carcass of a blue whale is rotting along the shoreline of a town on Canada’s east coast, triggering concerns from the community it could burst. Emily Butler, the town clerk in Trout River, Newfoundland, said yesterday the 26m blue whale (below) is beached next to a community boardwalk and is emitting a powerful stench that is spreading through the town of 600 people.

Butler said she and others in town are concerned that the methane gas caused by decomposition could cause the animal to burst. “We have a concern ... because I’m not sure with the heat and gases that are trapped inside of this mammal if at some point in time it will explode,” Butler said. But Jack Lawson, a research scientist with Canada’s Fisheries, said the risk of such a blast is “very small. At some point, the skin of the animal will lose some of its integrity as all of the connective tissue starts to break down,” Lawson said.

“Eventually, that gas will seep out. ... It will just deflate like an old balloon.”

District’s face rapidly changing

International migration accounted for 60 per cent of Mid Canterbury’s population growth between 2006 and 2013, a new report shows.

The Mid Canterbury Migrants and Newcomers Research document was released yesterday, showing the district’s face is changing.

Population growth in Mid Canterbury has expanded by

13.4 per cent between 2006 and 2013, from 27,372 to 31,041, with international migration accounting for 60 per cent of that figure.

According to citizenship data, British migrants continue arrive in the highest numbers, with 163 naturalised in the same five year period, and followed by Samoan migrants.

Notably, there were 152 new citizens in 2012, compared with 61 in 2006.

This figure does not account for the many migrant workers residing in the district who are ineligible for citizenship.

The report, which builds on information collated for the previous report released in 2009, highlights issues faced by newcomers, and recommended initiatives to address them.

Fifteen focus groups consisting of 105 participants aged eight to 80, representing 47 nationalities, took part.

The key issues related to access to information and services – such as health and education, social and geographic isolation, transport concerns, and access to English language support.

Mayor Angus McKay said the district’s economic prosperity relied on the contribution migrants made, and it was important to celebrate their ethnic and cultural diversity.

He said the challenge was to work together to address the is-

sues highlighted in the report, to assist migrants become part of the wider community.

“Each and every one of us has a role to play in helping new residents feel at home,” he said.

Raewyn Barclay, who worked on the report in her former role as Safer Ashburton’s community development officer, urged people to sign up for focus groups being established to work on the recommendations made in the report.

The countdown is on until Ashburton’s museum and art gallery close their doors for the final time.

On Friday at 4pm the lock will turn on the Baring Square building and for about three months the Ashburton District’s art and heritage items will be relocated to the district’s new art and heritage centre on West Street.

The shift will be a carefully organised, well planned exercise said museum director Michael Hanrahan.

“We’ve been preparing for this for about three years already. All the small stuff is packed and a large amount of this is now stored across six storage sites,” he said.

The current museum display will remain in place until much later in the relocation, with the wall behind Mr Hanrahan’s desk spelling out clearly how finely tuned the big move will be.

Furniture trucks are booked for specific days to carry specific items. Display cabinets and items needed for the shift are all

scheduled to arrive in correct order.

The number of items to be moved is mind-boggling and even the museum catalogue gives little indication of the size of the job. There are more than 20,000 entries on the list but most of these relate to multiple items.

He’s quietly confident the job will be done on time and to plan.

“You could more than treble that number of items; it’s a big task, but we’re on top of it.”

For most of June and July exhibitions designer Chris Currie, who has been with the project since 2008, will be working in the new complex creating the carefully planned displays.

These will tell the story of the Ashburton District in a chronological and thematic fashion.

When he’s finished there will still be at least two weeks of testing to carry out before the museum and art gallery open for business.

“We want at least two weeks where we can pretend we’re opening and closing the building every day,” Mr Hanrahan

accompanying book where biographies can be read.

■ SOLOMONA MURDER INQUIRY

Accused to appear in High Court The teenager who has admitted killing Ashburton mother Sina Solomona is set to appear in the High Court in Christchurch tomorrow.

Ms Solomona was murdered

in her Cass Street home after finishing her night shift at CMP Canterbury.

The 17-year-old accused, who was 15 at the time of the murder, has been remanded in cus-

tody since his arrest in the days following Ms Solomona’s death on December 15, 2012.

He admitted charges of murder and sexual violation in October. Name suppression has

been in place since his arrest.

He was to have appeared at the High Court in Timaru on February 14, but that date was cancelled, as was his next scheduled appearance on March 9.

No information on tomorrow’s hearing has been made available, due to suppression orders, but a High Court spokesperson confirmed it would not be a sentencing appearance.

Shooters gear up for duck season opening

Hundreds of hunters have shotguns checked and cleaned, ammo stocked and decoys ready as they prepare for opening morning of duck shooting season.

It’s an annual ritual for most duck hunters and Ashburton businessman Dean ‘Deano’ Officer is no exception.

When his alarm goes off at an ungodly hour on Saturday morning he, and thousands of other hunters around the country, will hit the floor running in an effort to get to their mai-mai before the ducks start to gather.

On arrival they set decoys fake ducks placed as authentically as possible around the site to attract the tasty version toward the water.

Ducks land into the wind so with the wind at his back, Deano plans for the birds to land towards him limiting the distance between hunter and target. He sets the decoys accordingly.

Instead of camouflage face paint, Deano opts for a face mask; it will cut down his morning preparation time.

When that 4am alarm goes off Deano grabs a bacon and egg pie with a flask of a warm brew and is off to the river ... to a secret spot known only to him and the mates he shoots

alongside. The talk is light. It’s a quick catch-up since last year before they get down to business.

When the first shot rings out at 6.45am, it’s all on; the other ducks have been warned.

On a good opening day they might get “a good bag limit” of 15 to 20 birds.

There is limited talking, just a camaraderie sitting together in

a camouflaged shelter preying on ducks ... tasty plump ducks that Deano says are destined for salami, pies or beer sticks; he knows a good local butcher.

If the going is good, these hunters will hang about until lunchtime before processing the birds.

They might head out again before nightfall, it depends on the weather.

Ideally it should be a good season for duck hunting as bird numbers are high.

But if there are clear skies as predicted for opening day, it may not reap a good harvest as the birds intelligently fly high and head offshore to hide until nightfall.

The official season starts annually on first Saturday in May. It runs over three months and this year finishes on July 27.

Hours of shooting are restricted between 6.45am and 6.30pm.

Each hunter’s maximum quota is 50 ducks a day.

A current game bird hunting licence is needed.

Each pond has its own safety rules; know who is sharing with you.

Gun maintenance should be up to date before opening day.

Stick to the hunters code of conduct.

Rangers will be actively checking compliance rules are being followed Licences are current and carried.

Hunters need to use non-toxic shot.

Avoid alcohol or drugs while using firearms.

Identify your target – no shooting other species.

No shooting in built up areas, near animals or livestock.

If duck shooters use their commonsense, this weekend’s opening of the game hunting season should go off without a hitch, police say.

Mai-mai and waterways are being readied in preparation for Saturday morning’s opening and Ashburton Police senior sergeant Mark Offen is urging people to be responsible.

He’s warning duck shooters that alcohol and guns should never be mixed and firearms should always be treated as loaded.

“The majority of duck shooters are responsible and have commonsense, however every now and then there is a person who does it all wrong and that minority ruins it for everyone else,” Mr Offen said.

Duck shooters needed to ensure they identified their target and their firing zone.

“If you’re taking kids with you, which I know some people do, ensure they are supervised and kept safe,” Mr Offen said. “And when it comes time to toast to the opening of duck shooting, you make sure your firearms are locked away.

“As long as people apply commonsense there should be no issues; the laws are there for the minorities.”

If duck shooters decided to head to a pub for a few drinks afterwards, their firearms needed to be secured first.

“When the shooting finishes make sure everything is locked away and secured. Don’t leave it lying in a vehicle in plain sight where anyone could see it,” Mr Offen said.

Hammer used as weapon After coming off second best in an altercation in an Ashburton nightclub, a 26-year-old local man armed himself with a claw hammer to exact retribution.

However, he was forced to run to the police station to seek protection.

This week Matthew John Gordon appeared in the Ashburton District Court for sentencing on a charge of possess-

ing an offensive weapon.

Gordon, a seaman, was evicted from the club on September 8, after becoming involved in two fights – the first with a woman, and the second with a man.

He waited for the male assailant on the other side of the street, and re-engaged in the fight.

Gordon left the scene briefly

before returning with a claw hammer. Yelling and swearing, he chased the complainant down the street.

A number of bystanders tried to take the hammer from him but he continued to act aggressively.

A crowd gathered, then turned on Gordon and pursued him to the Ashburton police station, where he sought refuge.

His lawyer Paul Bradford said Gordon had been drinking heavily, and did not know where he had found the hammer.

Judge Joanna Maze pointed to Gordon’s extensive history of violent offending, including fighting, disorderly behaviour, assault, aggravated assault, possessing offensive weapons and threatening to kill.

On the other hand, she point-

ed out his offending had tailed off in recent years, before fining him $500, ordering court costs of $130 and sentencing him to six months supervision, to include alcohol and drug counselling and treatment as directed by probation services.

An order was made for the destruction of the hammer.

Car club’s swap meet rolls round again

One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure and that will not be truer than at the annual Vintage Car Club’s Ashburton branch swap meet this Saturday.

The event kicks off the Wheels Week programme.

Cylinder liners, clutch plates, brake shoes, specialist gearboxes, cylinder heads, bonnets and parts, parts and more parts but wait there was more … so much more.

Swap meet organiser David Oakley said people came from

around the South Island to sell and buy sought after items but there would be more than just vehicle parts on sale with 300 stallholders booked.

There would be pot plants, cooking items and household goods.

“If you can imagine it, it will be for sale,” Mr Oakley said, of the annual fundraiser.

Not all 260 members in the vintage car club had vehicles they worked on, but Mr Oakley and Mr Lovett both had projects going on behind the scenes.

Mr Oakley was restoring a 1914 Rover 12 to add to his

extensive collection of vintage cars. He aspired to having a veteran car (pre 1918) and believed he was at the time of life where he was able to own one.

One year into its restoration, he believes it will still take another three or four years to finish.

Mr Lovett, on the other hand, was working on an Austin A40 ute (from 1940).

He readily admits it is a work in progress and has spent around six or seven years working on it.

He bought it to add to his 1929 Dodge ute. It was on show in the Vintage Car Club

museum.

Around 22,000 of the Austin utes were sold in New Zealand after the war.

The swap meet would be held wet or fine on the paddock behind the club so people were advised to bring their gumboots if rain continued.

Entry cost $5 for adults, children were free and car parking would be signposted.

However, anyone who wanted a stall could contact Katherine Shaw on 307 8896.

Checking out 100,000 books in just three days is a massive task, even for a team of experienced librarians.

When the large scale checkout took place recently in Ashburton, however, not one book left the Ashburton Library, rather every book, CD and DVD was checked, counted and reshelved as library staff undertook a five-yearly stocktake.

Every item in the library was scanned and details downloaded to be checked against stock records.

And the results were impressive, said district librarian Jill Watson.

Over a five year period the library’s loss rate from its collection was 0.32 per cent, just 320 items.

While those items have been tagged as lost on the library computer system, staff haven’t given up hope of retrieving at least some of them and periodic status checks will be run before they are written off.

The library’s non-fiction section is the libraries largest stock category, with 33,763 items.

Just 0.24 per cent of items from this category have disappeared over the past five years.

The highest loss occurred with CDs, 3.1 per cent and junior DVDs, 3.54 per cent.

Post stocktake, business was brisk at the library, with issues in March up on March 2013 by more than 1000.

Library membership, however has declined with numbers dropping from 12,030 in March 2013 to 11,605 this year.

Two French women have been warned by police after being caught shoplifting from Ashburton New World. Police said the two women – both aged 26 - put salmon, cheese, dip and avocado into their handbags before paying for other items and attempting to leave the store on Tuesday night.

They were apprehended with the items – valued at $27.38 – as they attempted to leave. Police issued them with warnings and they were both trespassed from Ashburton New World.

Snowfall unusual for April

Stormy weather which hit Mid Canterbury this week meant Mt Hutt Ski Area could only be accessed by snowmobile yesterday.

Staff had been unable to access the mountain in recent days due to the storm and yesterday they had to clear a snow-laden access road to get to the ski area’s base.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said the road was blocked and graders were

kept busy for much of the day trying to clear it.

By mid-afternoon they’d cleared a path, but only enough for staff to be shuttled through the last 2km by snowmobile.

“It’s the first time since I’ve been at Mt Hutt that we’ve had to snowmobile onto the ski area in April,” Mr McKenzie said.

It appeared around 50cm of new snow had fallen in recent days; an amount that was unusual for April, although the ski area had opened as early as May in the past.

Mr McKenzie said it was wind affected snow though, with drifts up to two metres deep on the access road.

Mr McKenzie wasn’t getting too excited about the snowfall, with more than a month still to go until the June 7 opening.

“It’s a sign; I don’t know if it’s a good sign,” Mr McKenzie said.

Staff were, ironically, yesterday setting up snowmaking guns which had been put away for the summer.

Snowmaking was likely to

begin, to top up natural snow, in two or three weeks.

Two new snow groomers are set to arrive on the mountain from Germany in the coming days and all department heads had commenced work and senior staff would be returning to work over the next couple of weeks.

Mr McKenzie said warmer temperatures forecast for the rest of the week would help with the delivery of the end terminal for the mountain’s triple chair next week.

■ FARMING WORKSHOP

Assault conviction Mayfield based An Ashburton mother was incensed after a woman befriended her 13-year-old daughter and coerced her into taking her credit card.

On discovering $2000 had been stolen from her account, Bridget Kiri Heke, accosted the woman, grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the head repeatedly. The assault was only stopped when other people intervened.

The victim was left with swelling and bruises around both eyes.

Heke appeared in front of Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court on Tuesday, where she admitted an assault charge.

Heke’s lawyer, Michelle Bar-

rell, said after persuading the teenager to obtain her mother’s credit card, the complainant in the assault matter tackled the girl and stole it from her.

Heke was angry because she had worked hard to save the money.

She complained to the police but her frustration was compounded by the delays in dealing with the theft, so she took matters into her own hands, Ms Barrell said.

Judge Maze accepted there was an element of provocation, but said it was no excuse for Heke taking matters into her own hands.

She was convicted and ordered to come up before the court if called within six months.

Following lunch, participants will visit Mr Corbett’s farm at 169 Somerville Road Mayfield, where native species, shelterbelt siting and species, irrigation design and soil moisture monitoring will be on the agenda.

The workshop will finish around 3pm and is open to everyone.

Residents affected by storm and flooding damage in February and March have already claimed around $25 million through their insurers. Insurance Council chief executive Tim Grafton said the most damaging storm occurred between March 4 and 5 when $21.9 million of damage occurred.

While the storm system also hit Wellington and the Hawkes Bay, most of the damage, totalling $19.6 million, was in Canterbury where there was extensive flooding in Christchurch. “Most of the damage in Canterbury was to home and contents with $13.4 million in losses followed by damage to commercial property ($2.8 million) and motor vehicles ($2.5 million),” he said.

Kaiapoi fatality The woman killed in a crash near Kaiapoi in north Canterbury yesterday has been identified as 20-year-old Linda Joy Glendenning, of Rangiora. The crash was believed to have occurred between approximately 8am and 8.15am on South Eyre Road between Burgesses Road and Mabers Road. The crash was reported to police by a passing motorist at 8.20am. Initial enquiries indicated the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crossed the centre line and hit a tree on the other side of the road.

No other vehicles were involved.

Assault arrest A man has been arrested in relation to an alleged serious assault in Dunedin’s Octagon on Sunday. A 19-year-old local man is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The victim remains in Dunedin Hospital and is progressing well, police said. The alleged assault occurred around 8pm on Sunday during a dispute at a taxi stand involving five men and a woman.

Victim ‘truly great’ The brother of a New Zealand tourist shot during a daylight bag snatch in Argentina has paid tribute to a “truly great person of utmost character”. Nicholas Heyward fought back when two teenagers on a motorbike tried to take his bag. He was shot four times and died at the scene. The 31-year-old trained physiotherapist is understood to have been on holiday, travelling in Chile, Argentina and Peru, where he had hoped to go rock-climbing.

Half pass on first attempt By sophie ryaN, aNd heather MccrackeN Despite complaints from frustrated learner drivers, authorities say more than half pass their practical test on the first try.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said nearly 60 per cent pass the restricted test on the first attempt, and overall the pass rate is more than 50 per cent.

NZTA said the pass rate for teenage drivers was higher than the overall average, at more than 60 per cent.

Nearly 150 parents and novice drivers have contacted APNZ in response to a story about a testing officer being punched after failing a learner driver at Meadowlands AA in Auckland on Monday. Many were frustrated at failing the test multiple times.

Knackstedt said the more challenging restricted test was introduced in February 2012 to improve safety of young and novice drivers.

“Road crashes are the single biggest killer of teenagers in New Zealand and our teen crash rates are among the worst in the developed world,” he said.

Young drivers on a learner licence were encouraged to put in plenty of hours of super-

vised driving and take advantage of free online resources before sitting the tougher practical test.

One parent said his 18-yearold broke down in tears after failing her restricted driving test for the fifth time.

Glenn Mclaughlin spent $670 on drivers licence tests for his 18-year-old daughter Dana, and has three other teenagers who could be in for a similarly costly experience.

First sod turned for $375m CPI irrigation scheme

The first sod has been turned in the $375 million Central Plains Irrigation Scheme near Hororata. Stage 1 of the 60,000 ha scheme is expected to deliver water to 20,000 ha of Central Canterbury farm land in September next year, after 12 years planning.

CPI chief executive Derek Crombie said that the first major work on the $140m first stage, comprising the 17km-long headrace canal and bridges, will commence immediately, with construction of the 130km-long pipeline network picking up momentum mid-year.

Up to 150 contractors and subcontractors will be working on the project in the near future, including the Aquaduct NZ personnel, who did the pipe work for the recently opened Valetta Irrigation scheme.

The pop-up factory built to manufacture the PVC pipes on site for the Valetta scheme will be relocated for the CPI in the next few months.

“Our plan is to have the headrace canal and bridges substantially finished by the middle of next year, including lining the canal, Mr Crombie said.

“This means we should be able to fill the canal in July which will give us nearly two months of testing and tidying up before water officially flows in September 2015.

In March, a jury of six men and six women took just under six hours to unanimously find Fawcett guilty of murder.

This morning, he will be sentenced at the High Court in Christchurch.

Miss Manning’s brother Rob, a city car dealer, isn’t sure what to expect today.

“Considering his role in my sister’s death, I imagine it will be around the 10-15 year mark,” Mr Manning said.

“But sometimes when you think people should get harsh sentences, they get light ones, and vice versa.

“I’ll just feel happy that he’s not going to be able to roam around and hurt anyone else, or at least be party to hurting anyone else.”

Robbery victim fights back

By BreNdaN MaNNiNg A man who broke into a rural Manawatu property demanding drugs left with a pair of scissors embedded in his stomach after his intended victim fought back, a local farmer said.

Police said the 45-year-old woman got up about 6.40am yesterday at her Opiki property to investigate a noise she thought might have been her partner returning from milking.

Instead, she was confronted by a man armed with a knife.

The property’s owner, Helen McAloon, said she and her husband Michael rushed to the victim’s aid after receiving a call from her partner.

“He was milking the cows and he had to race home ... he just informed us that there’d been a home invasion and his partner was hurt.

“She was a little bit hurt and obviously very distressed.”

The two men broke in demanding drugs, Mrs McAloon said. “She put up a bit of a fight and they took off.

“She just said that two guys had broken their way in. I think they must have gone through a back door. She said she [had] locked it, but some of those old houses, the locks aren’t as good as they should be,” Mrs McAloon said.

“She fended them off with a pair of scissors, they’re still in their gut ... [Police] will be trying to comb the hospitals to see if someone came in.”

Mrs McAloon said it was the first time she had heard of drugs-related offending in the area, and the attack had shaken up the close-knit community.

Palmerston North Detective Sergeant David Thompson said the attack escalated when the woman couldn’t comply with her attacker’s demands.

“We understand that during this time he [the attacker] has received a wound to the stomach with scissors,” he said.

Following the attack, the offenders fled in a vehicle and the injured woman barricaded herself in her room and called police.

The victim was being treated at Palmerston North Hospital for her injuries.

The first offender is described as Maori, with a noticeable missing tooth. He was wearing dark clothing. The second man was described as Pakeha with blond hair.

Caught twice in a fortnight William Ulilamoelangi Tuitavake, 21, a farm worker of Hororata, appeared in the Ashburton District Court for the second time in a month to face charges of drink driving (EBA 803mcg/l) and driving while disqualified.

When he was stopped by police on March 29 he admitted being “done for drink driving” two weeks earlier.

Judge Joanna Maze said the singular aggravating factor of Tuitavake’s offending was his drink driving conviction on March 17, which resulted in the driving disqualification.

“If you offend again in the near future the starting point could be a term of imprisonment,” she warned.

Tuitavake was disqualified from driving for a further nine months, starting on September 17, fined $900 on the drink driving charge, $200 on the disqualified driving matter, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and to obtain and use a zero-alcohol licence for three years when his licence is returned.

He will also be subject to a six month supervision order with the proviso he must undertake alcohol and drug assessment, counselling and treatment as directed by the probation services.

Tyron Jayhan Chapman, 18, of Allenton, admitted charges of driving while suspended and breaching the conditions of a community work sentence.

A probation officer told the court Chapman’s compliance with his community work sentence had been sketchy, and he had 54 hours outstanding from a sentence of 80 hours imposed last year.

He said Chapman frequently wandered off the job, and he became aggravated when spoken to about one such incident, leaving the office and climbing over the locked gate.

The driving matter was laid in November last year.

Judge Joanna Maze requested a presentence report with appendices for Chapman’s sentencing date on June 12.

Shaun Harley Boaz-Wornall, 21, an engineer, of Ashburton admitted making a false statement to police.

The offending occurred in relation to a fatal smash on East Street on November 16 in which Timaru man Sailasa Vakalala died several days after he crashed while attempting a u-turn.

Boaz-Wornall was in no way responsible for the crash, but as he had not renewed his licence following a period of disquali-

fication, he panicked and denied driving the second vehicle involved in the collision.

Boaz-Wornall felt guilty about his actions and had attempted to contact police to confess, his lawyer Paul Bradford said.

Judge Maze said his actions had complicated and prolonged the police inquiry into the matter, before sentencing him to three months community detention and 100 hours of community work.

Charles Grant Jelley, 46, a sole trader of Temuka, was convicted of drink driving with a blood alcohol level of 260 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, when the legal adult limit is 80 milligrams.

It was his third conviction for drink driving and Judge Maze asked for presentence reports to consider electronically monitored sentences, in view of his drink driving history, the fact he was three times above the legal limit and the risk he presented to the public.

He will appear for sentencing in the Timaru District Court on June 16.

Junior Donald Sadlier, a sickness beneficiary of Ashburton, was convicted on his

fourth count on driving while disqualified. He was sentenced to a further 12 months disqualification, starting on December 12 and 80 hours of community work.

Outstanding fines worth $1890 will be remitted on completion of 40 hours of community work.

Rangi Wairi Tahapehi, 32, of Netherby, admitted three counts of driving while disqualified. He was disqualified from driving for nine months and sentenced to 50 hours community work.

He agreed with Judge Maze’s suggestion that a bicycle and a back pack would be a better transport option.

Jonathon Karu Prichard, 25, a farm worker of Maronan, appeared for sentencing on charges of careless driving and his fifth conviction for driving while his licence was suspended.

Prichard had fallen asleep and driven through a fence on Maronan Road, which he had since repaired.

He was fined $200 on the careless use matter, sentenced to two months community detention for driving while suspended and disqualified from driving for a further 12 months.

Driving disqualified Robert William Roche, 26, a care worker of Invercargill, was convicted of driving while suspended – he was disqualified from driving for a further six months, fined $400 and ordered to pay court costs of $200.

Drink driving Aroha Putiputi Noema, 20, a factory worker of Ashburton, admitted a charge of drink driving (EBA 596mcg/l). She was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months, fined $400 and ordered to pay costs of $130.

Drink driving Byron Dante Parrett, 23, a farm worker of Southbridge, pleaded guilty to charges of drink driving (EBA 758mcg/l) and driving while forbidden. He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $900 on both matters, and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Loss of traction Lee Alan Smith, of Ashburton, paid the price for showing off by doing burnouts on the evening of March 29. He was convicted of sustained loss of traction, disqualified from driving for six months, fined $350 and ordered to pay costs of $130.

Methven artist Tessa Watson has scooped the people’s choice award at the Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition.

She also won the New Zealand Flora and Fauna Art Award.

The exhibition in its 50th year finishes tomorrow.

Miss Watson’s piece, Do not feed the Kea No1, captured the cheeky, naughty nature of New Zealand’s infamous alpine parrots; the kea. It was perfectly completed by its torn canvas.

“It’s amazing feedback. It’s really encouraging,” said Miss Watson.

“It’s hard putting your (work) out there when as a teacher you are already in the public eye. It gives you drive to keep doing it and keep pushing.”

Painted in pastels, the winning piece has an underlying conservation message about not feeding the protected bird species.

There were two pieces in the exhibition of different kea – one identified by its tag, the

other without. Both sold for $395 on opening night.

They were painted from photographs taken of the birds at Arthurs Pass as they explored human surrounds; the contents of a rubbish bin at the time.

Careless use Riki James Sammons, of Ashburton admitted a charge of careless use. Sammons pulled out in front of an oncoming vehicle in Hinds on November 5, causing a collision. He was remanded at large for sentencing on July 21, to allow time for a restorative justice conference to take place.

In brief Discovery claim dismissed Authorities searching for Malaysia Airlines flight 370 have rejected claims from an Adelaide technology company that it has found wreckage in the Bay of Bengal that may be the missing aircraft.

GeoResonance claims its sensor technology has found a plane in the Bay of Bengal, south of Bangladesh and in an area at the northern part of the original search for the commercial airliner. Although the marine exploration company has not declared the discovery is MH370, it says the possibility should be investigated. But Australia’s Joint Agency Co-ordination Centre, which is leading the search, said the location of MH370 suggested by the GeoResonance report was not in the Australian search and rescue zone.

US tornadoes kill 35 people At least 35 people have been killed in tornadoes that reached up to 320km/h, ravaging neighbourhoods across six states, US media say.

In hard-hit Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee, at least 17 people were killed on Tuesday, CNN television said. Another 18 were reported dead in Arkansas, Iowa and Oklahoma on Monday.

But forecasters warned more brutal weather was set to hit, affecting an estimated 70 million people.

The National Weather Service said that “severe thunderstorms” were ex-

pected in eastern and southern Mississippi, western Alabama and extreme eastern Louisiana.

It also forecast several tornadoes, some of them “intense,” baseball-sized hail and damaging winds.

Among the dead was University of Alabama student John Servati, who perished saving his girlfriend from a wall that fell and would have otherwise crushed her, The Clarion-Ledger reported.

People in Tupelo, Mississippi sifted through the rubble of their destroyed

homes and businesses.

Some grilled hotdogs and hamburgers to hand out for free to those in need, while youths helped remove debris and fallen tree limbs from elderly people’s homes and yards.

“I am just overwhelmed - the damage is overwhelming, of course, but the outpouring of people to lend a hand and give out water and food, it’s just tremendous,” said Denise Hardin of the Tupelo Housing Authority that manages many neighbourhood properties.

Inmate ‘tortured’ in botched execution

By Chantal Valery A US death row inmate has writhed in agony and mumbled incoherently in a botched execution using untested drugs, before dying of a heart attack 40 minutes into the ordeal, news reports say.

The gruesome end to the life of Clayton Lockett, a convicted murderer and rapist, prompted allegations that what he underwent amounted to torture. It also caused the state of Oklahoma, where Lockett died, to postpone the scheduled execution of a second inmate.

Lockett was administered a new, untested three-drug protocol in what would have been the central state’s first double execution in 80 years.

But Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton ordered the execution of Lockett stopped about three or four minutes after the start of the injection, citing a “vein failure,” a prisons spokesman said.

Lockett died of a massive heart attack about 40 minutes later after receiving all three drugs, spokesman Jerry Massie said.

Even though he was administered the injection, “the drugs didn’t go into the system,” Massie said.

The drugs were a sedative, an anaesthetic and a lethal dose of potassium

chloride. Patton immediately ordered a 14-day delay for the execution of Charles Warner, who had been set to be executed two hours after Lockett.

“About 13 minutes into the execution, after he had been declared unconscious, the inmate began writhing in pain. His body was sort of bucking. He was clenching his jaw,” Tulsa World editor Ziva Branstetter said.

“Several times he rose, his head and shoulders rose up off the gurney as if he was trying to get off the gurney.”

Shortly thereafter, the prison warden closed the blinds, preventing reporters from witnessing what was going on in the execution chamber, Branstetter said.

Lockett was convicted in 2000 for the rape and murder of a young woman he kidnapped, beat and buried alive.

Warner was convicted for the 1997 rape and murder of an 11-month-old girl.

Ian Thorpe has been released from hospital following complications from shoulder surgery. The swimming legend spent time in an intensive care ward during the past month as he battled serious infections, contracted while in hospital. Thorpe’s manager, James Erskine, confirmed yesterday the Olympian had left hospital but revealed little else. “It looks as though the infections have cleared up. It can always re-infect as it’s done twice before but we are hopeful,” he said.

Skydivers collide One skydiver is dead and another injured after the two collided in midair in northern California, according to media reports.

The accident occurred yesterday at the Parachute Centre in Acampo about 66km south of Sacramento, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. One skydiver landed only suffering minor leg injuries while the body of the second skydiver was found nearby, Deputy Les Garcia of the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department said.

Murder accused hospitalised A South African woman accused of murdering her three young disabled children in London will be moved to a secure hospital for immediate treatment for mental health problems, a court has heard.

Tania Clarence, 42, sobbed quietly as she appeared via video link from prison, where she is being held on suspicion of killing her three-year-old twin sons, Ben and Max, and four-year-old daughter Olivia. The children were most likely suffocated, prosecutors told the hearing at a court in London. All three suffered from type 2 spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic condition. Clarence was detained after the three bodies were found at the family’s home in New Malden, southwest London, on April 22.

olice around the country are pulling out their hair over the reckless behaviour that is killing drivers at a rapid rate.

Five people were killed over the recent long Anzac weekend and according to police many of these deaths could have been prevented.

Of course, if you are silly enough to get behind the wheel intoxicated, you are also unlikely to put on your seatbelt.

It seems insane after decades of advertising and growing public awareness that so many drivers are still taking off without clicking in their seatbelts.

Three farmers were killed in a horrific crash in Southland when their Hilux hit a bridge, a young passenger was thrown from a car in Taieri when the vehicle went off the road, while a hunter in Hawarden died when his car plunged off a track.

Police have stated that several of these fatalities may have been prevented if they had been wearing a seatbelt.

Five South Island families are grieving; these rural crashes should be a stark reminder for everyone in Mid Canterbury how easily our lives can be snuffed out.

Too many Mid Canterbury farmers still hop in their vehicles without putting on their belts for a short trip up the road or into the paddock. And they are not alone, as too many townies also seem to think they are bulletproof.

The fatality in the Taieri crash also showed that not enough of us put on our seatbelts in the backseat, which is no less dangerous than sitting up front.

Putting on your seatbelt only takes a few seconds and does not make you less of a man.

Witnessing drivers speed across the flooded state highway earlier this week, with no consideration for the wall of water, low visibility or galeforce winds, you do wonder about their intelligence, or lack thereof.

Sadly many of the idiots driving too fast, with no seatbelts, or too many drinks end up killing others, so make sure everyone in your car buckles up.

I had the misfortune of being in hospital for eight weeks, six of these in Ashburton Hospital Ward 6.

I would just like to say that from the charge sister, registered nurses, nurse aides, physios and cleaners, and a special mention for the male nurses, they were all phenomenal.

The professionalism, caring and loving attitude to all of us was amazing.

Meals were tasty and the happy atmosphere was so much appreciated by us all.

want to know why New Zealanders as a nation don’t speak out?

As a principal I certainly hear from parents who are upset at decisions made by the school that affect their child.

I understand they are speaking on behalf of their child and wish me or teachers to know that some of our actions and decisions have had unforeseen consequences.

So if my parent community speak up about localised issues, why do we not generally speak up about larger issues?

I want to raise three issues concerning children that I believe have had marginal debate and outcry.

Family poverty How have we got to the point where, according to Kids Can, one in four children in New Zealand live in poverty?

Read that again – one in four lives in poverty. This is not Malawi or Syria, this is New

Zealand. Kids Can is a charity that began in 2005 and is now feeding 10,085 children a week, some five times a week.

Who is speaking out about this? Where is the decisive leadership from adults to diagnose cause factors and have the authority to implement change?

Certainly two myths are busted by the fact that we have a charity organising clothing and food for New Zealand children.

Myth one is the failed financial idea that wealth trickles down. That is total crap and everyone on low wages has known this for a long time.

Myth two is that New Zealand is an egalitarian society.

When our most vulnerable are left to be helped by a charity as if we were a third world country, we are slipping further and further away from this societal notion.

OECD reports); New Zealand has the worst record for preventing accidental deaths to children. The worst! Last! We are a highly-developed nation that has the greatest rate of killing its own children.

Again where is the outcry?

Where are the calls for solutions, where is the plan to target this and to reduce such a shocking reality in this country.

Give a child a Lotto ticket for their birthday and they have more chance of being run over going to the mailbox than actually winning the big one.

Alcohol availability Our blasé attitude and lax policies have left the way clear for the stealthy and insidious availability of alcohol to a point where we would feel inconvenienced if we couldn’t purchase it.

Statistics NZ published figures from 2013 showing that by the end of the year 466 million litres of alcohol was produced for consumption in New Zealand.

A bit over the top don’t you think? Talk to any agency involved with families and children and they will point to the consumption of alcohol as one of the main aggravating

factors in the lives of families.

I must have missed the huge protest rallies and countless letters to the paper when a liquor shop opened in Allenton within 100 metres of a school and a church.

Guaranteed that the Ashburton District Council, if challenged, would answer it is out of their hands as it is allowable under their zoning bylaws.

This is the same council that has no qualms collecting $200 a pop for overdue WOF and regos when parked in town. (I didn’t realise ADC was so concerned about my registration being two weeks’ late).

I would be stunned if this council could come up with three reasons why it was necessary to have a liquor outlet set amongst state housing, schools, medical offices and churches.

So why don’t more of us speak out? Our children are our future and our lack of action on their behalf needs to change if we wish the future of this nation to be better than its past.

Firms full of confidence Businesses are still brimming with confidence, ANZ’s monthly survey has found.

A net 65 per cent expect an improvement in the general business situation over the year ahead.

That is down three points from the month before, the second monthly decline.

“But we are still talking elevated levels of confidence,” ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie said. “The longterm average has been plus 10 [per cent net positive].”

Other survey indicators remained well above historical averages, he said.

A net 53 per cent of firms expect their own activity to increase, down five points on March but still double the long-run average.

pecting to increase employment. Investment intentions dipped from a net 31 per cent positive to a net 30 per cent.

“That’s a blip,” Bagrie said.

For the third month in a row export expectations rose, the high dollar notwithstanding.

“Pricing intentions are off their lows but far from galloping away,” Bagrie said.

“The same can be said for inflation expectations, which were unchanged at 2.6 per cent.”

However, Bank of New Zealand economist Craig Ebert takes a less sanguine view of the pricing intentions reading.

At a net 30 per cent they were consistent with inflation picking up towards 3 per cent rather than the 2 per cent the Reserve Bank’s forecast had it at for the foreseeable future, Ebert said.

Jeff Ryan was horrified when he purchased a salami company and found out what was in the product.

So the former Mid Canterbury farmer set about researching salami and how to make it a healthier version.

Today he’s the man behind LASCo, a Mount Maunganui based company which he describes as healthy, new and innovative, that produces handmade, pure New Zealand beef salami.

Mr Ryan had always wanted to work with smallgoods and recognised that a high qual-

ity low fat salami product was missing on the market, so started making a traditional artisanstyle product to fill the gap.

His product is dairy, gluten and soy free and after just a year, it’s available around the country on supermarket shelves.

“In a year we are in 250 supermarkets,” Mr Ryan said.

They’re in Foodstuffs supermarkets – including Ashburton New World where Mr Ryan conducted tastings yesterday – and have just been accepted into Fresh Choice.

He’s invested heavily in plant and now has seven staff and 30 reps on the road and right now, he’s touring the country

to showcase his product to consumers.

“We’re doing 20 tastings in 20 stores in 10 days and I’m selling out probably 60 to 70 per cent of the stores I go to,” Mr Ryan said.

Mr Ryan was a farmer at Westerfield – well-known as a past trainer of the famous racing pigs for the Mayfield A&P Show – and moved to Nelson around 10 years ago, first trying his hand at grapes before finding a passion for the smallgoods industry.

He’s found his niche. He said business was growing at a rate of about 15 to 20 per cent a month, and he was happy.

Lion buys Morton Estate, vineyard Holly ryan and annE GiBson Lion New Zealand has bought leading Kiwi wine brand Morton Estate and its Stone Creek vineyard in Marlborough for an undisclosed sum.

The move, which has been in the pipeline since last year, was finalised this week.

The sale is subject to Overseas Investment Office approval, which is required for deals of more than $100 million or if it involves more than five hectares of land.

Lion New Zealand managing director Rory Glass said he believed the acquisition would help expand Morton Estate to its full potential, as well as bolster Lion’s wine portfolio, which

already included brands such as Huntaway, Corbans, Wither Hills and Jackman Ridge.

“Morton Estate will be a great complement to our existing brands, giving us more flexibility in the way we service customers and consumers by way of range and price,” he said.

“We expect to grow Morton Estate beyond its existing channels in order to fully unlock the potential of the brand.”

Lion is fully owned by Japanese brewing giant Kirin, meaning the sale will effectively be passing the New Zealand wine brand into foreign ownership.

Morton Estate was established in 1978 by kiwifruit farmer Morton Brown in Katikati, and was subsequently sold in

1995 to Canadian John Coney, owner of The Wine Portfolio.

The company has vineyards in Marlborough and Hawkes Bay, including the Riverview Estate, and Morton House in Auckland.

The wine brand has received national and international prizes over the years, including for its Black Label chardonnay, which won the title of best chardonnay in the world from the London International Wine Challenge in 1995.

The company handover, which includes the main Morton Estate Stone Creek Vineyard in Marlborough, will begin this week and will be completed by next month.

Eight members of the Seafield Rural Women met at St Paul’s Lounge for the April meeting with one apology.

Members were welcomed by the president who led with the reciting of the creed.

The motto for the month was – You may be disappointed if you fail but you are doomed if you don’t try.

All the business was dealt with including preparing a letter to go to The Big Little Theatre Company for $500 which we are presenting to them.

Members started planning the Link Meeting which we are hosting in June.

Sold a few cookbooks to members then made up a roster for the two days when we sell raffle tickets for our branch.

After all business was finished we passed the meeting over to Kerry who spoke to us about her trip to London for the ACWW meeting then she told us about the sightseeing she managed to do afterwards before coming home.

It was lovely to hear about all the beautiful historic places she was able to visit.

Afterwards Kerry was thanked, then we had a social time before closing the meeting.

Such is life, for a farmer’s wife It’s a cold and miserable autumn day in Ashburton, I am pleased to observe from the warmth of my kitchen, sitting down at the table with a coffee and a bowl of homemade pumpkin soup. Thank goodness I gathered in the big mature pumpkins from the paddock.

So much is being said about the weather; all we can do is support the farmers who are struggling to come to terms with what may lie ahead. RWNZ supports, represents, and connects with people in rural communities.

Our walk for Women Walk The World took place on April 17 at the domain.

We were blessed with two hours of no rain, although a cool breeze and conditions underfoot (if you kept to the pathways), were perfect. Thank you Gwenda for a lovely morning tea.

Our Good Baking Day recipe book is becoming a bestseller, there are limited books waiting to be sold, but once these are gone, there will be a delay until the new batch is printed.

I am impressed the work that branches do out in the community, and I thank you for all what you do behind the scenes.

Our scholarship committee has had another busy time sorting through the entries, the calibre was very high and it was indeed a pleasure to present Elyse Andrews and Laura Conway with their $750 grant.

Both girls have been recipients in the past, and we continue to be impressed with their applications and commitment to their study.

Our grants, two $250 book grants, were awarded to Letitia Thomson and Sara Kircher.

All grant recipients will have the opportunity to address us at one of our Link Meetings later in the year, congratulations to all who entered.

A reminder that the Link Meeting will be held at St Paul’s Church Hall on June 4 at 9.30am.

Future farm staff needs to be big priority – DairyNZ Recognising the need for highly skilled staff on dairy farms, DairyNZ is holding a forum to encourage farmers to understand the importance of hiring and retaining top staff.

If the dairy industry wanted to be considered a world leader, it needed to lift its game and ensure it retained quality staff, says DairyNZ strategy and investment leader for people and business, Mark Paine.

He will be a key speaker at the DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum, May 7-8.

“We need to ask ourselves if we’ve got an industry geared up to accommodate the growing demands. We have a range of initiatives in place and we’re working hard on all fronts – but is it enough? I’ll be keen to hear from farmers attending the forum about their priorities,” he said.

Research indicated that for onfarm roles the industry needed about 1000 graduates every year at diploma level and above, and another 250 a year for rural professional and science roles, Mr Paine said.

“We compete for the best young talent from schools and tertiary institutions, so improving our systems to train and equip young people for their

farm role is a priority. We also need to provide a world-class work environment.”

There was also a growing focus on how farmers measured up to legal employment obligations, he said.

“We’ve had labour and health and safety investigators focused on our industry in the past year.

We’re in the spotlight and we need to shine to build and retain a good reputation as an industry.

We’ve got significant obligations around employment practices and, as an industry, we need to lift our game if we’re going to be considered world leaders.”

Mr Paine’s presentation will be one of three people-focused sessions at the DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum at Mystery Creek, Hamilton in early May. The forum is free to levy-paying dairy

farmers and their staff.

Two Farmers’ Forum workshops will help farmers set up for next season, starting June 1, by discussing employment hot topics such as timesheets and health and safety, as well as a new system giving definition to farm roles.

By creating clear definitions around roles from farm assistant to sharemilker, farmers would understand what it is to be successful in each role, the training needed and the level of experience required for the next step up, Mr Paine said.

“This will be the first time the industry’s had such structure around farm roles and how to progress through the industry.”

By Carmen Hall With income from timber stacking up, there could be good returns for farmers in the Ashburton District if they plant trees on some of their poorer land, the Farm Forestry Association said.

Middle districts chairman Denis Hocking said forestry blocks are best suited for low productivity pastoral land and could make more money than sheep or beef.

“On the present market, forest owners are getting very good returns from forestry blocks, comfortably ahead of the target $1000 per hectare per year net returns, on more accessible sites.

“It is well ahead of gross margins of around $500 per hectare a year achievable with sheep or beef on the poorer land; five to six stock units per hectare class of land,” he said.

Dependence on the export log trade to China is unsatisfactory but he said there are advantages in forestry.

“Harvesting can be a very flexible feast. The trees can stand and wait for the market, or, as is happening at the moment, harvesting can be advanced to meet strong demand.”

Benefits to the environment and animal welfare were also significant, he said. Erosion is a big problem in the Bay of Plenty and stock shelterbelts have become an obsolete concept.

Dairy animal nutritionist Peter Norwood will hold a seminar in Ashburton next week.

With more than 15 years’ experience in the Australian dairy industry, Mr Norwood has continually expanded his knowledge by training under international experts in soil fertility and animal health.

He looks at the full circle of nutrition, by evaluating the three main components – soil, plant and animal – that impact on performance.

Mr Norwood has been working with New Zealand farmers since 2011, but is making his first visit to Mid Canterbury to hold the seminar, which will focus on measurement and management as the means to achieve higher production and profits.

■ WHEELS WEEK

There’s something for everyone

T

here’s a real buzz going on around town.

Lots of people are talking about and eagerly awaiting the start of Wheels Week 2014.

And when you look at the programme of events taking place it’s no wonder people can’t wait for it to start this Saturday.

Wheels Week is a uniquely Ashburton celebration of the wheel, and what wheels mean to us.

And let’s face it, where would be without wheels?

Since its invention however long ago the wheel has had a huge impact on the human race.

Wheels Week has been held annually for over twenty years, but after all that time it has never lost its appeal.

And that’s really because the organisers haven’t been afraid of adopting changes and introducing new events on the programme, but at the same time they have retained the tried, true and popular.

without re-inventing, well, the wheel.

There will be a lot happening during Wheels Week, which means there is something for everyone. The programme, copies are readily available around town or on www. wheelsweek. co.nz, discloses all sorts of activities, from quiet static displays on the East Street green to the cut and thrust of NZ Championship Stock Car Racing.

Ross Butterick, who is the president of the Wheels Week organising committee and whose family have been long time supporters, says it’s that diversity which really appeals to him.

This year is the 24th anniversary of Wheels Week, and Ross has been involved from the start.

He recalls a small group of people getting together and coming up with the original idea.

But it wasn’t without some trepidation and concern about whether or not they could come up with a programme to fill a weekend.

Little did they know what a brilliant idea they had come up with, and Ross credits those foresighted people and the dedicated committees since for the ongoing success of Wheels Week.

During a break from finishing this column, my writing colleague Roger Hart and I attended a Wheels Information evening during which various groups supporting Wheels Week outlined plans for their individual events.

It was great to hear the enthusiasm of the various organisations, all keen to provide good well organised community activities. In some cases small admission charges apply, but with the aim of covering costs

and giving charitable donations.

The committee, all of whom are volunteers, have decided to that any surplus from the event will be given to the Westpac Helicopter Trust.

So not only will Wheels Week provide loads of fun and entertainment, it will also result in a donation to a very worthwhile cause.

Many local businesses support Wheels Week, which is a reminder of the great community we live in.

Perhaps nowhere is the diversity of events better reflected than by St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, who will dedicating their Sunday worship at 10am on May 4, 2014, as a celebration of the beginning of Wheels Week.

It was after their service last year that Parish Assistant Dellwyn Moylan was photographed demonstrating the importance of wheels when she famously, with robes flowing, rode a pushbike along the aisle of the church (check out page 18).

It was just one of the many fun things which have happened during past Wheels Weeks, and is an example of the many good things which will no doubt happen this year.

In fact we are all hoping we’ll see a repeat performance from Dellwyn.

Hard-working committee members Maree Allan and Avis Kingsland, both of whom enjoy classic cars, says it that sort of thing which really makes the event they have helped organise so good and so unique.

As its turned out, Ross Butterick and the others who came up with the original idea needn’t have worried about coming up with a programme to fill a weekend.

In fact it’s almost the opposite because Wheels Week isn’t really a week, the variety and number of things taking place has seen it grow and become Wheels Week Plus which spans a whole fortnight.

s in previous years the Vintage Car Club Swap Meet will take place on Saturday, the first day of Wheels Week.

Peter Jacob from the club says stall bookings are high so there’ll be plenty of interesting things on sale at this great big garage sale.

And while that tradition remains, two iconic events are being held at different stages than previously.

The must-see Ashburton Car Club street sprints will take place during the middle weekend of Wheels Week.

Car club representative Mark Gorman says that the event is shaping up to be as exciting as ever, and some great action will be seen on streets around the industrial area.

And this year the ever-popular street parade, which has previously taken place at the

start of festivities, will be held on the final day Sunday, May 18 in conjunction with the impressive Big Boys’ Toys Show.

Street parade co-ordinator Meredith Lowe, who is a keen motorcyclist herself, has undertaken that role for many years now, and likes it because everyone loves a parade, and there will definitely be hundreds of wheels in this particular one.

The winning team from Wakanui was – Keith Mann, Sue Guildford, Peter Guilford.

Ashburton Ladies Probus Club The Ashburton Ladies Probus Club had an interesting month, with a bus trip in early April to the foothills of Mid Canterbury. First up to Staveley where we had a delicious morning tea supplied by the Staveley Store.

Next through Mt Somers and up the Ashburton Gorge to Mt Possession Station. There we were met

by Donald Whyte the owner who accompanied us on the bus explaining about his property of 18,000 Ha, running 5000 deer plus beef cattle and a small herd of bison. We had our lunch that we had taken with us, in the deer shed, and then boarded the bus bound for Mayfield where members browsed the innumerable items in Overflow, then afternoon tea at the Udder Dairy. Back to Ashburton, after a very full day.

The monthly meeting was held in the Doris Linton Lounge. New President Margaret welcomed members and one visitor. Members sang the National Anthem, and reports were given about sick members, the committee meeting, and finances. One of our members is doing a scooter ride to the West Coast along with others. This is to raise money for Cancer Research. Some members donated. Raffles were drawn, then our mini speaker Barbara Barnes spoke about her year living and working at Arthurs Pass. A most interesting talk. After morning tea, our main speaker was Nicola Crosson of Time for Diamonds. She told us about diamonds, where they are mined and what happens to them from that time until they finish up on the jewelry shops. This talk was enhanced by slides, and diamonds for us to examine. We ware told about caring for our rings etc and checking on our contents insurance. Nicola was thanked for her talk and generosity and given a fruit tray. After the meeting 24 ladies had lunch at the RSA.

Ashbuton Pakeke Lions Club The April meeting of the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club was held was held on what was probably the wettest night of the month.

Attendance was smaller than usual with 63 members, partners and visitors.

President Lion John Lynch welcomed all and asked for a moments silence in respect of the Late Lion Ron Thomas who had passed away recently. He had served Lions in several capacities and will be sadly missed.

His widow Joyce pinned his badge on the banner of remembrance. No clip boards were circulated but members were advised that there will be a collection day for the Ronald McDonald House in July and reminded of the assistance that will be required for Wheels Week.

Members were thanked for the help given at the combined Lion’s community lunch held recently.

A report was given on the successful and social bowls tournament. Grace for the meal was given by Norma Galway.

Following the meal amid much chatter and rain on the roof the guest speaker, John Leadley, was introduced by Lion Maurice Wilson.

John spoke on his life as firstly an Ashburton county councillor and then when amalgamation of the urban and rural councils became a reality, as a district councillor.

John had embarked on what was to become many years of service to local government in Ashburton.

He held many roles within the council including several terms as deputy mayor.

Significant changes encountered over the years in-

cluded the introduction of the Resource Management Act which had a real impact in shaping the District. Decision making during his term included District Plans, roading, water, sewerage and facilities. Not all were popular but John is well known for his down to earth comments and the fact that he was never afraid to speak his mind and face up to criticism. Serving a local body can be rewarding but has its many downsides which not many can easily cope with. Lion Jim Martin thanked John for his informative and entertaining account of his public life.

A discussion paper had been circulated re a future Pakeke major fund raising project .This received full support from the membership and planning will progress. Lion Peter O’Neil reported that housing for the boat projected is needed.

Lion Ron Paterson conducted his entertaining slot as the Tail Twister and the evening concluded with the National Anthem.

Ashburton Savage Club Twenty-eight members plus 13 guests from sister clubs, attended the annual dinner, which was held at the Ashburton MSA on April 1 heralding the commencement of the 2014 season.

The guest speaker for the evening, Mr. Don Geddes, delivered a most interesting and informative talk of his visit to the Auckland Islands.

The inclusion of wonderful photographic slides provided the audience with graphic appreciation of these islands.

At the conclusion of Mr. Geddes’s presentation, Past Chief Jim Mitchell proposed a vote of thanks, to which the audience responded with acclamation.

The first korero (concert) for the season was held at the Savage Club Hall on Tuesday, April 22 at 7.30pm.

Following the singing of the NZ National Anthem and traditional “March In” of Council, Past Chief Bruce Wear inducted our new Great Chief John Davis who welcomed members & guests. An important item of the evening was the congratulations to Savage Eric Ingram for his 73 years of service to the Ashburton Savage Club.

The age of membership is normally 18, but as many members were serving in the armed forces during World War Two and due to his musical abilities, a special dispensation was made to Eric allowing him to become a member at 15 years of age.

The orchestra commenced with some good old toe-tapping tunes followed by:- Banjo trio (Bob Neilson, Jim Mitchell & Russ Carter) - Sketch (Harold Kemp, Graham Taylor & Tony Blain) - Vocal solo (Jim Burgess accompanied by John Davis) - Electronic keyboard (John Davis) - Chorus Group - Instrumental Group (Sam Cullimore, Lorraine Boud, Shirley Millar, Kevin Crean, Russ Carter) - Vocal/ Instrumental (Bruce & Lanae Hill).

The evening concluded with the Closing Ode, THE QUEEN and Supper.

Ashburton Rose Group On Wednesday, April 9, 11 members and three visitors visited Ruth Hall’s Musical Garden which is on the way to Methven. Luckily it wasn’t raining and before lunch we were shown many unique musical instruments which we were shown how to play them. Our host was very interesting and after lunch we were shown around the Musical Garden some of which included the Musical Garden Toilet, Swiss Cowbells, Musical Windmill, Pipe Organ, Musical Playground and many others. It was a very interesting day and everyone enjoyed it. Our next meeting will be our AGM.

Ashburton Senior Citizens Inc The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Senior Citizens Inc was held on April 8 at 1.30pm in the Seniors Centre, Cameron Street.

While the audience was being seated Hope McIntosh once again played a lovely melody on the piano. Yvonne welcomed everyone and then “Happy Birthday” was sung.

Jim Burgess was the first entertainer and he sang “Galway Bay”, “It’s a great day for the Irish” and “April Showers”.

Rose Stead followed on the piano with the “Norwegian Cradle song” and “Robins Return”. Bethany McNally sang “A nightingale sang in “Berkeley Square” and “Down Town”.

Yvonne then followed with a lovely medley on her

Rose then played “Napoleon’s Last Charge” and “Remembrance”. Bethany then sang “Yesterday” and “The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music”.

Jim and Bethany sang “We’ll meet again” and “Now is the hour” to complete a delightful afternoon’s entertainment. Yvonne thanked the lovely entertainers for their contributions to a very pleasant afternoon. Afternoon tea was then served. For Total Mobility please ring 3081237.

Ashburton Woodworkers Geoff Brown welcomed demonstrator Noel Graham from Christchurch and 18 members to our April meeting with three apologies Fred Jackson, Bruce Ferriman and Gary Maxey.

Mention was made of next month’s AGM Show and Tell table was well supported; Wim Melchers a walnut and wattle bowl and four coloured weed pots Frank Luxton a small bowl with pewter insert, a carved saucer and an offset turned bowl John Millichamp a large natural edged walnut bowl and a holey yew bowl David Frost three nicely finished elm bowls Adriaan Slooten an off centre wattle bowl Hayley Zanke, her first item; a miniature table with turned legs. Well done, George Spencer a small rimu bowl Les Mattingley antique jet boat made by his late father Geoff Brown mulberry candle stick, a large worm eaten beech platter Noel Graham demonstrated turning deer antler into a bowl. Find a generous farmer to give you the deer buttons and remember to give him a finished item as a token of thanks.

Give the button a good scrub then with hot glue he stuck on a small block of wood to fit into the chuck.

He warned us of the dust danger of any bone especially when sanding with 240 and upward grit paper, so wear a decent mask.

Using sharp tools, as bone quickly will dull the edge, he turned the base, once satisfied with the shape the item was reversed chucked. The wooden block turned away he proceeded to turned the bone into a bowl.

The use of a light shining into the bone made it quite transparent which was used to gauge the thickness of the bowl and showed up areas that required further removing.

Many other uses can be made using bone.

An interesting demonstration as it showed that other things can be turned besides wood. Thanks Noel.

Coronation Target Shooting Club Results for April 28.

The combination of a long weekend and bad weather meant a lower than usual attendance.

Some very good scores with a consistently high standard. Shirley Herridge and Nina McKenzie dominated and Murray Cook showed remarkable improvement.

A target with nine 10s and a total of 98 led to some un-ladylike comment.

Individual scores were: Heather Ross 85.0, Jayden Collett 81.0, Nick Squires 96.4 & 93.2, Sandy Collett 96.3 & 98.4, Bill Rankin 95.3, Bryan Hunter 96.2, 97.5 & 97.5, Dean Smith 94.1 & 95.2, Nina McKenzie 97.5, 95.2 & 98.3, Murray Cook 94.5 & 96.2, Shirley Herridge 98.3 & 97.5.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc On Monday 28th March President Joy Jaine welcomed approx 40 members to the monthly general meeting of Grey Power Ashburton. Joy extended a warm welcome to Zone Director Miles Jackson and his wife Pauline.

An apology from Sheila Graham was accepted. Joy thanked Dick for obtaining a projector from Smith and Church at short notice.

Miles Jackson briefly addressed the meeting and announced that the Grey Power Election Strategy would focus on; elective surgery; local body rates and spending; and superannuation rates. Joy then introduced Sharnie Williams the marketing manager for Grey Power Electricity.

Grey Power Electricity is part of a group of energy suppliers that include Pulse Energy and the Buller Electricity Trust.

Grey Power Electricity was set up to specifically give benefit to Grey Power members. There is no prompt payment discount, but long time price protection, transparent billing and a 30 day cancellation option.

Sharnie accompanied her talk with a Power Point presentation and information pamphlets were

handed out.

Questions from the floor covered; GP Electricity web site; contracts with power companies and termination charges; monthly readings; comparison of rates with other suppliers; no age restriction to join Grey Power; those using solar power with photo voltaic cells cannot sell back to GP Electricity. Natalie Blampied passed a vote of thanks and presented Sharnie with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes were distributed, there was a special first prize of a GP Electricity jacket donated by Sharnie.

Rose, Audrey and Fairlie entertained on the piano.

Afternoon tea was served.

The meeting closed at 3.05. The speakers at the next meeting on May 19 will be Eion McKinnon and Rob Cope-Williams from Galbraith Funeral Services.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed an excellent attendance of members on Thursday April 24. Apologies were received. Hope McIntosh played the piano for us to sing the RSA song and Happy Birthday to one member. Sympathy was extended to anyone who has lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery. The programmes for the year were distributed. Colleen thanked anyone who had helped in any way on Poppy Day. The day was a success, despite the weather. President Colleen Hands will place the Women’s Section Wreath on Anzac Day. Our entertainers were introduced – Jim Burgess, Yvonne Cherry and Ann Woodham.

When Jim sang, Yvonne played the keyboard.

He sang brackets of War, Irish and Show songs.

Yvonne on her keyboard played a lovely arrangement of “The Nuns Chorus”. When Ann sang her selections, she was accompanied on piano by Yvonne. Ann also recited “Flanders Field”, lastly singing “Blue Smoke” in English and Maori. To end the varied programme, Jim led a sing along of World War one songs. The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by members.

The entertainers were thanked for giving their time to come along. Raffles were won by Margaret Halket and Adele Campbell; in March by Judy Davis and Betty Weastell.

The Plains Ladies Probus Club Our April meeting had a smaller attendance on a very wet morning. Three visitors were welcomed and 14 apologies were accepted. There also were 3 resignations.

For the Mini speaker Jean McDonald and Jennifer Stewart each shared a profile of their lives in the form of question and answers.

The movie on May 7 at 11am is The Other Woman.

A good way to spend some time on a cold day. Our new President Sandy kept us amused with two humorous readings – My GPS (My Wife) and a Prayer for growing old.

Our main speaker was David Askin Manager of Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces. David has always been interested in gardening and served his apprenticeship at Christchurch Botanic Gardens. He has lived in Ashburton for 25 years.

As well as the Domain David also looks after Baring Square, Cemetery and Bedding Displays around the town.

Plans are in progress for the Ashburton Domain 150th celebration to be held later this year. He shared this quote with us “Adam was a gardener therefore gardening must be the oldest profession.”

Aine thanked David for a most interesting talk. The next meeting is on Monday, May 26.

U3A meeting Members and guests who attended the April U3A meeting heard Derene Flood, Public programmes Manger for Canterbury Museum speak.

We were treated to a lively presentation as she talked about the process of choosing what exhibitions to display from public suggestions, offers from other museums or art groups, these maybe local or overseas works.

Derene brought laughter from her audience as she described a presentation from Palmerston North museum called interactive body.

A display for children designed to teach biology of the human body.

And is running for the school holidays. Other displays she mentioned was an arctic expedition where she showed photographic slides and talked of the research work, buildings and the people who work there.

Most interesting were the audio-visuals we were shown of street artists at work as they created 3D wall sized paintings using first brushes and then spray cans to paint in details. These were from their successful Rise exhibition.

The new side is inexperienced at top level but have held their own in their two opening encounters, with a 1-1 draw against Craighead, who had opened the season with a 1-2 loss to Geraldine.

While the women’s sides both face tough tests on Saturday the men are nowhere to be seen.

After the two-week break for the school holidays, defending champions Wakanui Black have another week off with the bye while Tinwald and Wakanui Blue moved their local derby to Tuesday night.

Local athletes among the medals

Mid Canterbury athletes were among the medals at the New Zealand Open Karate Championships in Christchurch at the weekend.

Sisters Isla, 9, and Kalia, 7, Russell had a haul of seven medals out of the Kofukan dojo in Christchurch, where they have been members for a year.

The sisters combined with another Kofukan member to win silver in both the 6 to 9-year-old girls’ team Kumite and Kata.

Kalia also claimed silver in the 6 to 7-year-old Kumite and a bronze in the Kata while Isla also won a bronze in the 8-9-year-old Kumite.

The two girls are members of the Canterbury-Westland teams, competing in the regional championships in June before heading to Wellington for the nationals in July.

Also at the championships Ashburton’s JION International Karate Dojo members brought home 13 medals

with two individual gold, five silver and five bronze as well as a team gold.

Thorsten Windhorst won gold in the 35-44 years Kumite and silver in the Kata and Taylah Burrowes won the other individual gold in the 10 to 11-year-old Kumite as well as a joint bronze in the 10 to 11-year-old open Kumite.

Jessica Windhorst, Jenna Borthwick and Leanne Walsh combined to win the 10 to 13-year-old team Kumite gold.

Windhorst also won silver in the 12 to 13-year-old Kumite and open Kumite, Borthwick won bronze in the 10 to 11-year-old Kata was a joint winner of the bronze in the open Kumite with Burrowes.

In the 6 to 7-year-olds Riley Wall won silver in the Kumite and bronze in the Kata, Rosie Gray took home silver in the 8 to 9-year-old Kumite and it was a bronze for Tamzyn Barnes in the 12 to 13-year-old Kumite.

Playing at home for the second week in a row, Mid Canterbury won’t want a repeat of last week in Mainland Football division one on Saturday.

Last week they slumped to a 1-3 loss to Cashmere Technical to still be chasing their first win at home, something they would like to get this weekend against Waimak United.

However, Waimak have three wins from the opening four rounds, including a 3-1 win over Cashmere Tech, while Mid Canterbury have only managed the one win over FC Twenty11 away from home.

Third time on home turf could be the trick.

Down in division four Mid Canterbury Eastern are away to FC Twenty11 Falcons while Methven FC host FC Twenty11 Thunder Panthers, while in Masters grading Mid Canterbury host High School Old Boys after a 2-2 away draw with Western B. It has been two weeks since their 6-0 win over Nomads and the Mid Canterbury 18th grade are back on the park chasing a third big win against Waimak United in 18th grade division two.

On Sunday the Mid Canterbury women will look to make it four from four when they meet Western after a 4-3 win over Waimak United Red to remain unbeaten.

Record field for champs Commonwealth Games cyclist Lauren Ellis joins past Olympians, world champions and stars of the future at the New Zealand Club Road Championships in Cambridge starting today.

Ellis and fellow London Olympian Jamie Nielsen are preparing for the endurance track events in Glasgow and will get some much needed road racing at the fourday championships that have attracted a record 633 riders.

The senior women’s race will be a feature tomorrow with Ellis and Nielsen, the national time trial champion, taking on a strong field including fellow BikeNZ high performance track rider Georgia Williams from Auckland, who is taking a break from her professional road career to focus on the

track towards the Rio Olympics.

The club road championships feature leading age group riders from under-15, elites to masters in the 70 years-plus division, as well as several leading para-cyclists.

Christchurch-based Sam Horgan will be the favourite for the men’s road race on Sunday.

Horgan won the title in 2012 at Hawke’s Bay, the under-23 honours in 2009 along with senior time trial victories in 2011 and 2012.

Talented Otago rider Alex McGregor and outstanding Auckland rider Myron Simpson will be threats while there is interest in Australian Sean Finning, a former Commonwealth Games medallist, who has moved to New

Zealand as pilot for para-cyclist Daniel Holt, a paralympics swimmer who is trying his hand at cycling.

There is a raft of former leading athletes in the age group fields, with the championships not complete without Gary Ulmer, father of cycling great Sarah, who gained his first national club title in the under-19 division 60 years ago. He has won 10 national club titles and won the 70 years-plus division in each of the past four years.

The competition begins with time trials on the outskirts of Leamington today with the road races, over varying distances, from tomorrow to Sunday. They incorporate laps of a 20km circuit near Leamington.

Wizards beat Bulls John Wall scored 24 points to lead the Washington Wizards to a 7569 victory over the Chicago Bulls yesterday and into the second round of the NBA play-offs. Wall added seven rebounds and four assists in the victory, which gave the Wizards a 4-1 triumph over the Bulls in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series. Meanwhile in the Western Conference, Mike Miller scored 21 points as Memphis edged Oklahoma City 100-99 in yet another overtime thriller to take the lead in their series.

NBA bans Clippers owner for life The NBA has banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life and fined him the maximum $US2.5 million ($NZ2.9 million) yesterday for deeply offensive and harmful racist comments that sparked a national furore.

Three days after a recording surfaced of Sterling urging his girlfriend not to associate publicly with blacks, NBA commissioner Adam Silver removed the 80-year-old billionaire and urged owners to start the process of forcing him to sell the team he bought in 1981.

Current and former stars praised Silver’s decisive action only 88 days since replacing 30-year NBA boss David Stern.

“The views expressed by Mr Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful,” Silver said. “That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage.”

Real estate tycoon Sterling cannot attend any NBA games or workouts, appear at any Clippers office or facility or make any business or personnel decisions for the club.

Silver said he would urge NBA owners to strip the team from Sterling. The market value of the team Sterling bought for $US12 million ($NZ14 million) is expected to approach $US600 million ($NZ750 million).

“I fully expect to get the support I need from fellow NBA owners to remove him.”

Michael Cheika’s past misconduct came back to bite him as the NSW Waratahs’ coach was slammed in a damning finding by Super Rugby’s judiciary for verbally abusing a sideline cameraman. The Waratahs and their coach were declining to comment yesterday as he decided whether to appeal, having pleaded guilty to misconduct at his hearing. SANZAR judicial officer Nigel Hampton QC said he was taking previous incidents into account when he handed Cheika a suspended six-month ban from the game, ordered him to write an apology to the South African cameraman and pay $6000 in costs.

NRL role for McKinnon As he continues his promising recovery from spinal injury, Alex McKinnon looks set to play a key role in the NRL for years to come.

The Newcastle back-rower’s strength under adversity has been an inspiration to all with even just a passing interest in rugby league.

Yesterday the Knights moved to extend McKinnon’s playing contract beyond this year, just hours after the game’s governing body offered him a “job for life”. Newcastle remain hopeful McKinnon, 22, will make a full recovery from the injury suffered in round three against Melbourne.

At the time the Knights and McKinnon were in talks over his playing future and yesterday Newcastle confirmed they would honour that contract, guaranteeing him employment at the club.

Newcastle did not release the terms of the updated contract, saying the details of McKinnon’s employment would be discussed when he was ready.

Sport Unbeaten teams go head-to-head

After a two-week break the two unbeaten teams in premier netball go head-to-head in round three on Saturday.

Heading into the midway point of the first round, defending premiers Celtic and College A are two-from-two in the rain-affected opening rounds.

The opening match of the round has Hampstead against College B, with Hampstead looking to build on its solid win over United and hand College B a third straight loss.

Celtic and College A then go head-to-head before another intriguing match to end the day.

After a win first up United were undone last outing by an experienced Hampstead defence in a low-scoring match.

United will be the more experienced side when they take on a winless Methven and will look to put the lesson Hampstead taught them to good use to get back to winning ways and get the better of the 2013 runners-up.

The new-look Methven have the potential to produce a win despite being well beaten in both their matches to date and have plenty to play for as the three-time finalist are in danger of being demoted to senior A for the second round.

Chasing promotion from Senior A, Celtic B battle Rakaia, Celtic C clash with Allenton, and Collegiate come up against Methven B.

Kendra Eilken and her United side will be looking to get back to winning ways in premier netball’s third round of matches on Saturday.

Matthew a national champ

Ashburton swimmer Matthew Harford became a double national champion after winning the 13-year-old boys’ 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle on the opening day of the New Zealand Age Group Swimming Championships in Wellington.

Harford netted his first national title in the 200m backstroke in a new personal best

time of 2:18.01 on Tuesday.

Just an hour later, he was back in the water to win his second gold in the 400m freestyle where he took 8.33 seconds off his previous best time to win in 4:23.36.

Harford was also on the podium yesterday on day two of competition, winning bronze in the 400m individual medley in 5:09.94 and silver in the 100m freestyle in 57.40s.

a personal best by 1.79s and was just 0.04s off first place.

Other swimmers in finals action on day one were Lucy Clough coming fourth in the 15-year-old girls’ 400m freestyle in 4:33.89, a personal best by 4.28s.

Matthew Clough was seventh in the 13-year-old boys’ 50m breaststroke in 36.38, a personal best by 0.29s; and he was eighth in the 200m backstroke. On day two he had a strong swim in the

400m individual medley final to finish fifth in 5:13.95.

Caitlin Johnstone was eighth in the 16-year-old girls’ 100m breaststroke on day one in the pool, and on day two featured in the Canterbury girls’ 16 years and over 200 metre freestyle regional relay which won silver. Caitlin swam 28.06s for the third leg of the relay.

The nationals continue through until Saturday.
