Most Mid Canterbury duck hunters kept to the rules over opening weekend, but a few committed minor offences having no licences and using steel shot over water. It was a similar story South Island wide. Fish and Game South Island communications advisor Andrew Currie said the majority of
offences were at the minor end of the scale. “It’s a little disappointing that the messages regarding lead shot and buying a licence haven’t got through to a few.” In Mid Canterbury rangers targeted private land more than public waterways and there were a few, very minor offences, Mr Currie said. Depending on the circumstances, offenders risk fines of
up to $100,000 and the loss of any firearms used, and a review of their suitability to hold a firearms licence by police. Overall the compliance crews across the South Island were happy with hunters’ behaviour. Unlike the North Island where a 44-year old man was shot in the elbow on opening morning, “across the South Island it’s been a pretty good start”. On opening morning, the
clear, calm conditions in the South Island were not ideal for hunters but the sheer volume kept the birds in the air for hunters to target. “Given the numbers (of hunters) that were out on those mornings it was enough to put birds back in to the air off the water, and gave hunters plenty of opportunity to harvest game bird.” There were some 5000 licenc-
es sold in Canterbury. “Fish and Game are pleased most of the hunters’ groups that were approached were behaving very well.” Mr Currie said it was at least two, maybe three years since a firearms incident had happened on opening day. And given at least 30,000 licences were sold nationwide and the sheer volume of hunters out “that’s pretty good”, he said.
