School fire angers principal BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Young people and a cigarette lighter are believed to have been behind a fire at Rakaia School on Saturday which has outraged the school’s principal. The fire, shortly after 3pm, destroyed a set of Eco-pod rubbish bins, nearby shrubs and a shade sail, but Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis said it could have been much worse. “The fire brigade and the neighbours who called it in did a great job, but it’s disappointing that there are young people out there doing this sort of thing for fun,” Mr Ellis said. Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Fred Clarkson confirmed the fire appeared to have been started by children playing with a lighter and setting fire to the rubbish bins. “It had a very good hold and probably a dozen or more well established shrubs were involved,” Mr Clarkson said. Mr Clarkson said firefighters could see the smoke as the fire appliance rolled out of the station and given they’d been called to a structure fire, they were worried. Fortunately the fire did not spread to classrooms or build-
ings, but Mr Ellis said it could have easily done so. Strong winds which battered the district at the weekend could have picked up embers and sent sparks towards the buildings. “I’d estimate that something like this could be a $5000 fix, but the concern for the fire brigade boys was that it had the potential to get really get going,” Mr Ellis said. Neighbours called the fire brigade and had the school gates open for appliances when they arrived, and Mr Ellis was grateful for their help, and that of members of the community who had pitched in to help clean up yesterday morning. The biggest disappointment for him was that there were kids out there willing to do such damage to a school. “And quite possibly their own school, in the sense that they could be former pupils of the school.,” Mr Ellis said. “I’m just ropeable, it makes me so angry.” Despite the fire, it will be business as usual at Rakaia School today with the bulk of the fire damage cleaned up and all classrooms operational. Police are investigating the fire and anyone with information is asked to contact them on 3078400.
