Dr Google can mislead – local GP

An Ashburton doctor has issued a warning on the dangers of self-diagnosing, as an increasing number of people turn to Dr Google.

Ashburton GP spokesman Dr John Guthrie said people should tread carefully with information on the internet and that information should be used alongside skilled advice from a doctor.

“We all know there is so much junk on the internet that often it makes old wives’ tales sound credible.”

He said the internet was useful after a doctor’s diagnosis as a person could find out more information on that condition. But without the diagnosis it could be difficult to accurately pinpoint. “(It) can lead to either false confidence of a non-serious illness or over-anxiety about a serious illness when the problem is minor.”

Dr Guthrie said it was important to find a good, accurate website.

“For every reliable website there are several others which may be pushing a non-scientific view. Some of these are just blogs and can contain totally irrational advice.”

A survey of about 2000 people carried out for the Southern Cross Healthcare Group found 55 per cent of people used the internet to research their ailments and 22 per cent did it at least once a week.

It also showed that 9 per cent of respondents would take their findings to their GP, but 7 per cent would diagnose their problems on the internet and not seek any medical help or advice.

Dr Guthrie said the use of labels such as “natural or herbal and breakthrough” was often misleading.

“Only websites with a credible origin should be accessed. Even then it may be a good idea to discuss the findings with a doctor as he or she will likely have a much better understanding about putting this knowledge into its proper context.”

Prince’s South Pole health scare

Prince Harry suffered a health scare while trekking across the ice during his South Pole challenge. The prince was left weakened and in pain after crippling altitude sickness and exhaustion, which forced him to rest for 36 hours while journeying across the Antarctic plateau on foot. His problems during the challenge, in December, have emerged as scenes featuring his health woes are to be screened during an ITV documentary about the polar adventure. The former Spice Girls star performed at the Queen of Hoxton venue in the British capital last week with rising singer and songwriter Peter Aristone. Pop star Lady Gaga has shown off an innovative set design for her upcoming world tour which will allow fans to dance underneath a transparent stage. Gaga has shared her lavish plans for her upcoming ArtRave: The Artpop Ball tour by posting a picture of a prototype stage set on her Twitter page.

The stage will be made of see-through Lucite – also known as plexiglass or perspex – and will include runways which cover sections of the audience so fans can stand underneath and watch the singer perform above them. “The stage is Lucite and you can just dance underneath the runways,” Gaga wrote on Twitter.

More good news Chocaholic gut bacteria may be one of the chief reasons why dark chocolate is good for the heart, research suggests.

By breaking down indigestible chocolate compounds and fermenting cocoa fibre, the bacteria generate a potent anti-inflammatory effect. It is this, scientists believe, that helps to protect the heart and arteries from damage. “We found that there are two kinds of microbes in the gut: the ‘good’ ones and the ‘bad’ ones,” said researcher Maria Moore from Louisiana State University in the US. “The good microbes, such as Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria, feast on chocolate. “When you eat dark chocolate, they grow and ferment it, producing compounds that are antiinflammatory.” “Bad” gut bacteria help to trigger inflammation, leading to bloating, diarrhoea and constipation.

Lorde targeted Lorde has asked fans to wear “rainbow clothing” to her upcoming show in Kansas after discovering plans by an extremist church to protest outside the concert.

The Westboro Baptist Church announced plans to picket Lorde’s concert at Midland Theatre on March 21 because she “doesn’t have enough sense to put in a thimble”. The chart-topping North Shore teen posted a series of tweets encouraging fans to wear bright clothes and “kiss church members who are the same sex as you”. Low number of rural fire calls

Fire officials are calling this past summer possibly the best they’ve ever experienced, in terms of the low number of rural fires attended.

The Mid Canterbury plains is now in an open fire season again, following the lifting of restrictions on March 5, but firefighters know there’s still a lot of agricultural burning to be done and they’re warning farmers to take care.

Ashburton’s principal rural

fire officer Don Geddes said he’d counted just two stubble fire escapes this past summer, compared to more than 20 a couple of summers ago, and much of that was down to the lack of typical hot, nor-west days on which firefighters could almost guarantee they’d be called out for something.

“It’s probably the best result we’ve had, maybe ever,” Mr Geddes said.

“It’s not over yet but we are getting well down the track with the burning. The fact that

we have lifted restrictions isn’t an invitation to be complacent though.”

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said although the brigade’s numbers hadn’t been broken down, his gut feeling was that the number of rural fires attended by crews this year was “substantially” down.

“Certainly we were not chasing smoke as we were last year.

I think there was some really good work done from the point of view of checking what you’re

actually looking at, and that seemed to eliminate that kind of thing,” Mr Burgess said.

“We’re at the mercy of the conditions at the time, because this year I think we have had a substantially different season.

There’s been a lot of rain, damp nights… things like that, so that has certainly had some effect on things getting out of control if they were lit.”

The number of rural fires were down, but firefighters did spent the last part of summer dealing with some “pretty big”

incidents. That included a large blaze on a Wakanui farm which firefighters from around the district spent more than 24 hours at the scene of, and a number of suspected arsons.

Overall though, the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade’s call-out numbers were down on the same time last year. In 2013, the brigade experienced its busiest year on record, attending more than 450 calls.

A prohibited fire season remains in place in the Mid Canterbury hill and high country.

Quake means Ashburton Borough School benefits

A Japanese school making its first visit to New Zealand after Christchurch’s earthquakes has chosen an Ashburton school to host its students.

Six students from the Hello Institute in Fukui, Japan, arrived at Ashburton Borough School yesterday, and another two students will arrive in the coming days.

Hello Institude president Kimi Otani said she’d brought students to New Zealand to visit since 1994, but this trip was their first following the Canterbury quakes.

A past-student who studied at Ashburton College a couple of years ago told them how great Ashburton was so the school planned another trip, bypassing Christchurch and instead choosing Ashburton to stay.

In all eight students – ranging in age from 10 to 16 – will be hosted by Ashburton Borough School for the next two weeks and Borough’s international director Kate White said it was just as exciting for the Borough kids as it was the Japanese visitors.

“Our students are so excited. They

were all waiting on the steps when the bus arrived,” Ms White said.

The Japanese students flew into Christchurch – after almost 24 hours’ travel – and were straight to the classroom when they arrived at Borough. They met their buddy students and spent time in the classroom before meeting their host families and heading to their host home where they will stay for the next two weeks.

Their visit will include time in the classrooms and outside activities – including walking Sharplin Falls, visiting the Hakatere Marae and local farms, and jet boating in the Rakaia Gorge.

“They will have ESOL language lessons at school most mornings and in the afternoons they will sometimes be in class with their buddies, and we have some day trips planned,” Ms White said.

They will also meet Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay and present him with a letter from their home town’s mayor.

Wheelie bin decision ‘up to the community’

With the current bag and bin option, the waste collection is paid through rates with a pay-as-you-go system for bags.

Wheelie bins will also be paid for through rates.

“The organic bin option is the Rolls-Royce option and it ticks more of the boxes towards achieving zero waste. There are many permutations in the way the service could be provided but we’ve selected ones that will help achieve zero waste,” he said.

If a switch is made to wheelie bins, the green crates will be retained for glass.

“We see these as an integral part of the recycling process.

Without the glass crate you can say goodbye to cardboard recycling.

“Just one broken bottle in recycling can lead to contamination,” Mr Guthrie said.

The fate of a proposed wheelie bin kerbside collection in the Ashburton District is in the hands of the community says Ashburton District Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie.

In reviewing its refuse collection, the council started with a clean sheet and looked at the needs of the community and the various options available.

It came up with three choices, all of which would comply with its drive towards the council’s zero waste goal, Mr Guthrie said.

These are: The status quo of black rubbish bags and a recycling bin, a recycling bin for glass with wheelie bins for rubbish and recyclable materials or a recycling bin for glass with wheelie bins for rubbish, recyclable materials and a third bin for organic waste.

The council would not be forcing any change, he said.

Information on the three collection options and a questionnaire will go to all households in the district within the next three weeks.

Based on feedback the council will decide a preferred option and a proposal will go out for general consultation by midyear. A decision on any change is unlikely before October, but no change will occur until July next year.

Police in Bali may have just five more days to lay charges against a New Zealand drugs suspect, who remains in detention five weeks after a police raid on a luxury villa.

Leeza Ormsby, 37, was arrested with the keys to the villa in north Kuta on February 12.

The Rotorua-born Sydney resident has admitted to possessing a cannabis joint in her handbag, but has vehemently denied any knowledge of drugs, including ecstasy and hashish, which were allegedly found at the villa.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and

Trade (MFAT) spokesman said yesterday that Ms Ormsby remained in police custody “as part of an ongoing police investigation”.

The spokesman said the ministry could not comment on the progress of the case or interfere in judicial proceedings.

However, it is thought police in Bali have until next Monday to press charges against Ms Ormsby.

Denpasar drugs squad head Agus Tri Waluyo said last month that police could detain Ms Ormsby for 20 days, and could extend that period by another 20 days.

An extension was sought recently,

Australia’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reported, which would give police until March 24 to press charges.

The MFAT spokesman said Ms Ormsby was receiving consular assistance from staff at the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, who have visited her twice in Bali.

“The ministry also remains in regular contact with Ms Ormsby’s designated family contact. Neither Ms Ormsby or her family wishes to speak to media and have asked their privacy be respected.”

Through her lawyer, Ms Ormsby has claimed she only had the keys to the villa to collect her laptop and clothes.

Mid Canterbury Rolling Stones’ fans are out of pocket after the indefinite postponement of the band’s 14 ON FIRE tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Ashburton’s John Tull said he was “gutted” to hear of the band’s announcement yesterday, which was made following the death of frontman Mick Jagger’s girlfriend.

Mr Tull, 54, would lose the approximate $320 he had spent on return flights to Auckland for the April 5 concert, while the $220 ticket he had bought would go into a drawer for safekeeping.

He had been going to go to the concert with a group of friends, and had last seen the Stones in Wellington in 2006.

On that occasion he had taken his two children and the three were in the newspaper the next day, which Mr Tull had autographed by guitarist Keith Richards after he sent it to him as he was recovering in hospital in Auckland after falling out of a tree in Fiji.

Fellow Ashburton fan Barbara Farr is just as disappointed after spending over $1000 on tickets.

The 56-year-old was to go with her husband Kevin and daughter Emma.

Skulls crawling with maggots A box from South Africa containing animal skulls crawling with maggots has been stopped at the border by biosecurity staff.

A Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) dog team discovered the box, full of wild animal skulls thought to include zebra and wildebeest, at the International Mail Centre near Auckland airport.

“There was clearly some flesh on the bones, as you could see maggots writhing beneath and on top of the cellophane wrapping,” MPI Auckland team leader Aynsley Richards said.

The intended recipient of the box chose to pay to have the skulls treated

with formalin and methyl bromide rather than have them destroyed or reshipped to another country.

MPI is holding the skulls until they are identified by the Department of Conservation.

“One thing for sure is they weren’t coming to New Zealand without treatment – the biosecurity risk to New Zealand’s animal product industries would have been too great,” Mr Richards said.

Biosecurity staff needed to check the animal heads to ensure they did not include any species covered by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, Mr Richards said.

Mid Cantabrians can expect no changes to District Health Board laboratory testing, following a recent decision to send most of South Canterbury’s work to Christchurch.

The majority of microbiology laboratory work from Timaru was due to be sent north to centralise services. It

was done to maintain the service in a cost effective way.

Staff had volunteered to reduce hours to avoid any fulltime redundancies.

However, the Canterbury District Health Board advised there would be no change to the way the current services were offered in Ashburton.

If there were urgent samples that needed testing after hours

they were done on site, either by medical or laboratory personnel.

“If there are any clinically urgent samples needing testing in Ashburton from patients that come in after hours, they are processed on site by medical staff using point of care testing equipment or Ashburton laboratory staff may be called in to process the test,”

said a DHB spokesperson.

However, if certain tests were not able to be done in Ashburton the samples were sent to Christchurch.

The processing of samples in Christchurch was done as required and totally dependent on each individual situation.

The demand on services in Ashburton did not warrant a 24/7 laboratory facility.

The Lions Club of Ashburton is seeking people who want to build self-confidence, belief, self-esteem and leadership skills. Every year they send a group of people to the Berwick outdoor experience course and they’re currently looking for applicants to go on this year’s eight-day outdoor pursuits course. The course will run from May 9 to 17. Applicants must be aged 18 or over and reside in the Ashburton District. Application forms are available from the Federated Farmers building on the corner of Tancred and West streets. Applications must be in by April 1.

Ten Ashburton people can now carry on a conversation without making a sound.

The 10 are recent graduates of a ‘conversational’ sign language course run by Deaf Aotearoa, designed to provide hearing adults with some basic sign language skills.

The course, tutored by Ashburton sign language tutor Carol Smith, is one of as string of courses run around New Zealand to give hearing people the confidence to engage in conversations with the hearing impaired.

Course organiser Becky Hadfield said the six week course was not designed to teach students the full sign language, rather it provided basic skills with a range of words, phrases and the sign alphabet.

“Because it’s a visual language it can be learned by anyone.

“It’s not dependent on aptitude or ability; it’s about being able to visually interpret information, following the signs given by the tutor,” Ms Hadfield said.

Building leaders

Next week is Cloth Nappy Week and two events are being held in Mid Canterbury to mark the occasion. Coffee groups will be held in both Ashburton and Methven as part of the week.

Ashburton’s will be held at the Porse rooms on Havelock Street on Tuesday from 10am, while Methven’s will be at the town’s Plunket rooms next Friday from 10am. There will be prizes and free nappies up for grabs but most importantly it will be a chance for cloth users to talk to other cloth users, or for those wanting to use them, to find out more. Cloth Nappy Week 2014 is dedicated to educating and celebrating the benefits of stylish, eco-friendly cloth nappies in New Zealand.

No voice is used in class, students are totally immersed in sign language and initially having to focus for two hours with their eyes is quite tiring, she said.

“Sign language is not just about signs, it’s about reading body positions and body language. A raised or lowered eyebrow can mean a question

or not. It’s about the small nuances of facial expression too.”

The difficulty for the graduating students now was that, like any language, if it wasn’t used regularly, fluidity was lost, Ms Hadfield said.

The success of Ashburton’s first course could see this repeated if there was sufficient interest.

Courses can also be run for business or community groups.

New Zealand Sign Language Week runs from May 12-18 and if there is sufficient, Deaf Aotearoa will run 45 minute taster courses in Ashburton.

A new Mt Hutt triple chairlift base terminal will arrive at the end of April from Dopplmayr, say ski area management. “Foundations have all been laid down ready,” NZSki general manager sales and marketing Craig Douglas said.

The lift entry would be realigned, so “rather than the once-tricky 90-degree turn as the chairlift approaches, the get-on point is slightly further forward, enabling straight loading from the back of the lift”. He took the opportunity to remind skiers that early bird rates for ski season passes, which have remained frozen for the third year in a row, are available online only until midnight today. “After midnight on March 20 they go up to the full season price,” he said.

Hui to set out local marae protocol

Hakatere Marae are passing on their marae rules and protocols to interested Ashburton community members in an open hui tomorrow night.

It is also giving the opportunity to marae whanau to have a say in developing tikanga and kawa (protocols and rules) appropriate for Hakatere marae and its whanau.

The marae hui starts at 7pm.

Hakatere Marae chairman Tiipene Philip said a number of changes had occurred around the marae with new Komiti (committee) members and new people entering the marae so protocols needed to be handed on.

A 53 page document that covered the tikanga (protocols/customs) and kawa (local protocols) existed for Hakatere Marae. But the draft document was open to consultation and discussion.

“The document is very large, but is also very important and

to keep it alive people need to come and experience the marae, so we can learn to operate correctly in a Maori setting.”

“The purpose of the hui is for the co-coordinator/writer of the booklet to explain some of the more important procedures on, for example, welcoming visitors onto the marae.”

It was an important chance for people come and discuss the protocols to see where they fit in.

Tiipene Philip said it was also an opportunity for people to view the protocols needed to follow for the opening of the new wharenui.

All the original whanau members, or a representative of those families, were encouraged to attend.

It was hoped at least 20 people would attend and be part of the discussion around event protocols.

Elderly, disabled Two New Zealand boys among 251 victims uncovered most at risk Two New Zealand boys are among 251 victims of a massive international online child pornography ring busted in the United States.

New Zealand police confirmed the two boys, aged 12 and 13, were among the victims of the members-only online network which had more than 27,000 subscribers.

Fourteen men had been arrested in the United States, but there had been no arrests here, a New Zealand police spokesman said.

No one in New Zealand would face charges over the child porn ring, which had links to victims in Australia, Britain, Canada and Belgium.

“The New Zealand Police received information from United States authorities that New Zealand children had been victimised by a US based online child exploitation group,” Detective Senior Sergeant John Michael said.

“During our investigation police identified two young male victims in New Zealand, aged 12 and 13, that had been exploited and were able to take steps to ensure their safety,” he said in a statement.

ever uncovered. The website’s victims - 243 boys and eight girls, lived in in five foreign countries and 39 US states, officials said.

Authorities said the victims, were, for the most part, boys between the ages of 10 and 17.

The organisation was “one of the largest known online child exploitation operations in history”, Department of Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson said.

Among the suspects taken into custody was Jonathan Johnson, 27, the administrator of the website, which operated out the southern US state of Louisiana, AFP reported.

If convicted, Johnson faced 20 years to life in prison, said Kenneth Allen Polite, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

“These indictments represent a strong co-ordinated strike ... against child pornography and

those who allegedly seek to harm our most vulnerable citizens, our young children,” Mr Polite said.

The illicit website operated on a hidden service board on the Tor network from about June 2012 until June 2013, when Johnson was arrested.

The Tor network is set up to conceal user’s location, making it possible to maintain online anonymity.

Authorities said the website contained more than 2000 shared webcam-captured videos of mostly juvenile boys enticed by the website’s operators to produce sexually explicit material.

“The high level of co-operation during Operation Roundtable demonstrates the willingness of international law enforcement agencies to combat online child exploitation,” he said.

More than one in five of the first 780 state house tenants facing possible eviction under a new government policy will be elderly or disabled.

A paper taken to Cabinet last month by Housing Minister Nick Smith and Social Development Minister Paula Bennett reveals that the two ministers have decided not to exempt the elderly and disabled from the new policy of reviewing all state house tenancies, ending the previous policy that a state house was “a home for life”.

The full paper, placed on the Social Development Ministry website at midday yesterday included a detailed breakdown showing that 20 per cent of the first batch of tenants to be reviewed would be 65 or over and 27 others would be “permanently and severely disabled”.

The paper was later removed and an edited version was posted later.

The controversial policy is intended to “shift expectations away from social housing for life to social housing for the duration of housing need”. It takes effect after the Social Development Ministry takes over

allocating social housing from Housing NZ on April 14, and the first affected tenants will be notified before the end of next month.

As expected, the ministry has been told to start by reviewing 780 of the 5447 state tenants who are already paying within $50 a week of the estimated market rent for their homes.

The other 63,187 Housing NZ tenants pay rents fixed at 25 per cent of their incomes.

They now appear unlikely to be affected by reviews because ministers have decided against putting all tenants on fixed three-year tenancies, instead targeting those who can afford to move into private housing because they are already at or near market rents.

Legislation passed last year allowed ministers to exempt vulnerable groups from reviews.

But Ms Bennett said Cabinet had decided “not to formally exclude any groups of people from reviewable tenancies”.

“We want to learn more about people’s circumstances through the process before we make any final decisions about what groups should be formally excluded from consideration,” she said. - APNZ

Spotlight falls on subsidiary

By ISaac davISon Education Minister Hekia Parata says she has asked the Serious Fraud Office to investigate Te Pataka Ohanga in relation to allegations about its spending.

The organisation was a subsidiary of the Kohanga Reo National Trust, which was cleared of misusing public funds on Tuesday night following an Ernst and Young investigation.

The investigation did not look at any expenditure by Te Pataka Ohanga because it was

deemed a private organisation.

Yesterday afternoon, Ms Parata said that she had continued to receive allegations about the subsidiary and she had referred them to the Serious Fraud Office.

She said that public confidence needed to be restored and allegations of credit card misuse needed to be put to rest.

“I have no legal authority in terms of TPO but nevertheless, such is our concern around maintaining public interest and reliance on the trust, we would prefer that the [SFO] investigated these issues.”

She added: “It seems at this point to us that having assured ourselves of the public funding of the Kohanga Reo services, with which we are satisfied, these other matters need now to be answered by the trust.”

Asked whether the original review should have looked at allegations of credit card misuse more seriously, she said that a minister had no more power over Te Pataka Ohanga than she did over a stationery shop or an insurance provider.

Ms Parata would not confirm who had made allegations against the organisation’s

members or how many people would be investigated.

“The point is that there are allegations that are yet to be answered by the trust, they need to be so that public confidence can be restored.”

The SFO was responsible for highly complex fraud cases, fraud involving large amounts of money, or cases involving people in important positions of trust.

Ms Parata said the SFO was not getting involved on the grounds that it was a politically sensitive issue.

Plague forces move A predicted plague of rats and stoats has forced the relocation of rare native parakeets from Canterbury to a Bay of Plenty island sanctuary. Eighteen critically endangered orangefronted parakeets, or kakariki karaka, flew their way to safety yesterday. The birds have been bred by the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust at Peacock Springs on the outskirts of Christchurch.

They will will be released on Tuhua/Mayor Island where a trust board has worked with the Department of Conservation to make the island predator-free since 2002.

Widow responsible

Minister returns to his flock full-time

Gloria Davis, the widow of the skipper at the helm of the Easy Rider when it sank in the Foveaux Strait in 2012, claiming eight lives, has been held partly responsible for its sinking, according to a court ruling out yesterday. The boat, which was skippered by Rewai Karetai, who did not hold a current skipper’s certificate, was taking six passengers off at the Muttonbird Islands before heading out on a commercial fishing trip when the accident happened.

St John’s Presbyterian minister David Vaughan is back at work this month after recovering from what he says has been a health “double whammy”.

Mr Vaughan had major gastric surgery at the beginning of March last year to treat scarring he sustained from a botched operation 35 years ago.

“I didn’t realise it was surgical misadventure then, it was a procedure that would never be done today,” he said.

Mr Vaughan was also last year treated for prostate cancer, and completed radiation therapy in mid July.

“It’s been a very slow recovery since then,” Mr Vaughan said.

He has been taking church services again since January, and this month has returned on a full-time basis.

“What I found most difficult was the fact I couldn’t do anything. It’s been wonderful to come back.”

Prime Minister John Key has proposed dispatching the All Blacks to China in a bid to boost links between the two countries.

Mr Key made the comment after he was greeted with a haka by a rugby team at the China Agriculture University (CAU), where rugby is a popular sport.

Mr Key said he believed the All Blacks should visit at some point.

“It’s the same thing we see happen in a number of other countries; they play exhibition games and I know the Rugby Football Union have thought and are thinking a lot about this market.”

Southern fire communications shift manager Karl Patterson said they were alerted to the blaze at the Discovery Sherwood Hotel around 5.15pm. A Feilding woman who died after suffering injuries in her home last week has been publicly named by police. Karen Makoare, 49, was taken to Palmerston North Hospital after she was found severely injured at her home last Thursday night. She died on Tuesday morning in the presence of her family, police said. Ms Makoare’s death was being treated as a homicide, and investigators said they had a clear understanding of her movements in the days leading up to the incident. A post mortem examination was completed in Palmerston North yesterday.

The day the circus came to town

It’s amazing what one photo can tell you.

On March 14’s Your Place page we ran a historical photo from the Guardian archives of some locals getting up close and personal with a baby elephant called Bimbo.

Ashburton man Roger Vessey recognised this photo because of a life-long passion for the circus. Better yet, he turned up with the actual Guardian page it was printed on and the circus pamphlet, immaculately preserved, promoting the event.

The programme said the date was March, 1963.

Mr Vessey said the baby elephant greet session took place in the Hays building, while the elephant race was going on outside. “It was known as Hays, the Friendly Store, where Farmers is now.”

too much of an OSH nightmare now) was because the Bullen’s circus was in town and they were promoting their shows.

The pamphlet said it was Australia’s largest circus.

Mr Vessey said school shut at 10.30am that day so the children could get out and see the ele-

phant race. The Lions club even stopped traffic for the event and raised money for charities.

Sadly, the baby elephant in the photo died, aged 54, September last year and all the elephants in the race are dead, Mr Vessey said.

But Bullen’s is still going, just

not as a circus. In 1970 they stopped performing and began hiring out their animals, such as lions, elephants and camels.

Ashburton man Noel Morriss and his siblings also felt a strong sense of recognition when they saw the photo.

It was their grandmother, Vera Morriss, making contact

with the baby’s trunk and right at the front, leaning forward, with some elephant food in his hand is her grandson Clive Morriss.

Noel reckons he recognised the boys wearing Hampstead School uniforms and the hairdos – his dad always cut the boys’ hair with hair clippers.

ekia Parata has done it again.

The Minister of Education has an uncanny talent for upsetting teachers and schools by launching radical new ideas.

The latest idea to drop the decile funding system and replacing it with a performance based system seems one from the top draw labelled ‘Plans to really upset the teachers’.

Granted, Ms Parata has an unenviable job, dealing with wellorganised and unionised teachers who traditionally oppose most changes that threaten the status quo.

Add to that the hundreds of thousands of parents who all have their own ideas about the education system and the minister’s job quickly becomes a hiding to nothing.

The latest suggestion to drop the decile system seems not only blunt but also insensitive as schools and teachers still need to be convinced of the merits of the national standards.

Attaching their funding to the highly controversial national standards only inflames an already touchy subject.

Yes, teachers and their minister agree that the decile system is also blunt and needs to be overhauled.

However, giving more funding to better performing schools may just increase the gap between rich and poor schools.

Children in privileged neighbourhoods perform better because of successful role models and because they do not have the learning roadblocks that less privileged children have to deal with at home and in their community.

This proposal could also create a competitive and cynical environment in which schools will focus on the brighter prospects and subtly push out others that may drag down their averages.

Each child is unique and so is the background and baggage they come with. Measuring their progress cannot be done by national standards alone.

For some children, just making it to school every day may be a massive success that is not necessarily reflected in the data.

I am just happy our daughter with special needs does not have to rely on her reading progress for her funding, because some of the biggest gains she has made at school will never show up in her national standards.

In response to Steve Devereux’s statement that he didn’t think “most New Zealand authors are that flash, mostly you read them and say yeah, not bad, for one of ours”, in his so-called book review, I suggest he go to the public library and take a crash course in New Zealand literature. New Zealand authors have been critically acclaimed worldwide since Katherine Mansfield blazed a path through short story fiction.

I read many new New Zealand authors and can assure Mr Devereux that, as it is enormously difficult to get published in this country due to a lack of publishing houses, most works of fiction are of an extremely high standard.

It is a grave disservice to suggest our literature is second rate and is an injustice to the many great writers who have come before us.

I was pleased to read the letter from Maree Jacobs, despite it being edited, which is quite understandable.

Once one starts on the procedures of the council it is difficult to compress ones thoughts.

She mentioned specifics by way of her letter and in doing so emphasised the shortcomings and indeed highlighted council’s rather contemptuous attitude to the procedure which is in place and allows councillors to consider they have been democratic and listened to the people, no matter that no placatory action would have been considered.

The hearings process itself is flawed and those who supposedly consider judgement have no qualifications and are obligated to those who pay their salaries and expenses.

Consultants are paraded, presumably those who have been well paid to plan the case and

when they do give opinions they are presented with job designations which the assembly are expected to accept.

My concern is, by whose standards are people designated and what are generally accepted standards. The designation itself is of no assurance.

Overall in this rather questionable expensive exercise is the indisputable fact that the highway is a state highway and as such should be making no more demands on our purse than that which has been acceptable over the years.

It is rather a pity that deals such as this, presented as a done deal, then becomes a let-uspersuade-you situation which seems to permeate council thinking.

This is yet another example of the council seeming to ignore those whom they profess to represent.

I would suggest that people who think they know any of these individuals, seek them

out and ask: “What was your contribution?”, and in doing so look them in the eye.

Don’t let time run out on you S ometimes I can’t bear the feeling of losing someone close to my heart.

To even consider it just breaks my heart. But it’s a reality of life.

But sometimes our love for our loved ones is overshadowed with the frustration you feel towards them at certain times.

You end up saying things that you wish you could take back or doing things you regret immensely.

If I think back to the countless arguments with parents or friends, I recognise the amount of time wasted on pathetic details.

We argue over things that we later regret, wishing if only we could erase those moments you always regret. When I think about the arguing and

time spent hidden away in my room or separating myself from family and friends.

It’s hard to realise that time runs out on us.

Parents realise that their kids won’t always be kids and although their children think they’re all grown up they’re really not.

We kids think that when we hit a certain age we need to break free to get away from a town, a school and a home that seems suffocating. But it’s not until you leave home thinking you’re on top of the world,

that you realise you miss home, your friends, family and even that school you couldn’t wait to get out of.

It isn’t till something drastic happens in our lives that everything is shifted into perspective right in front of our very eyes.

To see your priorities shift is a shocking wake-up call and sometimes I wish it would happen without a dramatic event.

But first, an introduction.

We are a community foundation – one of 12 that exist across New Zealand and one of the first to be formed.

The Tindall Foundation recognised the work that community foundations have achieved in places like Canada and America and decided to promote the concept in New Zealand.

We are a perpetual charitable trust dedicated to benefiting the residents of the Ashburton District in the area between the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers, the Main Divide and the Pacific Ocean.

Neil Sinclair led an enthusiastic and dedicated group and his drive and commitment to the cause has been a major reason for our success.

The Tindall Foundation supported us in the early days with funds to meet start-up costs and to make some grants.

From our launch in 2003 we now have over $5.2 million in assets.

It is invested in a way that protects the purchasing power of the donations and it is the income from these investments that are used to make more grants.

Our dedicated grants committee of Mary Ross, Anne Fleming, Kevin Geddes and I select worthy charitable causes in the Ashburton District according to the wishes of the donors.

In the year ending March 31 we will have made grants of more than $100,000 to such

groups as the Tinwald Scouts, Mania-o-Roto Scout District, Life Education Trust, Plunket Car Restraint programme, Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network, Ashburton Youth Cafe, Blind Foundation, our hospital and 14 individuals who received scholarships worth $20,000.

Of recent times we have also been very actively involved in supporting the establishment of a welfare fund for the Volunteer Firefighters of Mid Canterbury and the child literacy project (BOOST) being established by the Ashburton Learning Centre.

In brief Gunman kills 6, self A gunman on Wednesday stormed a branch of Turkey’s statistics agency, took colleagues hostage before opening fire and killing six of them. He then turned the gun on himself and died, officials and reports said. Eyup Tepe, the governor for Kars where the attack took place, said the shooting was not political or terrorism-related.

He said the gunman, identified as 33-year old Veysi Erim, was employed as a sociologist at the agency and was receiving treatment for psychological problems. Tepe said the dead included the agency’s manager and five employees. One other employee was injured.

Plane may have been tracked Ten days after a Malaysian jetliner disappeared, Thailand’s military said it saw radar blips that might have been from the missing plane but didn’t report it “because we did not pay attention to it”.

Search crews from 26 countries, including Thailand, are looking for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which vanished early March 8 with 239 people aboard en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Frustration is growing among relatives of those on the plane at the lack of progress in the search.

ing two giant arcs of territory amounting to the size of Australia — half of it in the remote waters of the southern Indian Ocean.

Cmdr. William Marks, a spokesman for the US 7th Fleet, said finding the plane was like trying to locate a few people somewhere between New York and California.

Early in the search, Malaysian officials said they suspected the plane backtracked toward the Strait of Malacca, just west of Malaysia. But it took a week for them to confirm Malaysian military radar

data suggesting that route.

Military officials in neighbouring Thailand said their own radar showed an unidentified plane, possibly Flight 370, flying toward the strait beginning minutes after the Malaysian jet’s transponder signal was lost.

Air force spokesman Air Vice Marshal Montol Suchookorn said the Thai military doesn’t know whether the plane it detected was Flight 370.

Malaysian police are considering the possibility of hijacking, sabotage, terrorism or issues related to the mental

health of the pilots or anyone else on board, but have yet to say what they have uncovered.

Investigators had pointed to a sequence of events in which two communications systems were disabled in succession — one of them before a voice from the cockpit gave an allclear message to ground controllers — as evidence of a deliberate attempt to fly the plane off-course in a hard-todetect way.

Investigators have asked agencies in countries with passengers on board to carry out background checks.

Steenkamp ‘standing when first shot’ Reeva Steenkamp was standing in a toilet cubicle and facing the closed door when she was hit in the right hip by the first of four hollow point bullets fired at her by Oscar Pistorius, a police ballistics expert testified at the double-amputee Olympic runner’s murder trial.

Steenkamp then fell back onto a magazine holder in the cubicle and was struck in the right arm and head by the last two shots fired by Pistorius with his 9mm pistol through the door.

Pistorius’ girlfriend crossed her arms over her head to pro-

tect herself, Capt. Christiaan Mangena said, when she was hit in the arm and head. He testified that he believed the second bullet shot missed Steenkamp and ricocheted off a wall inside the cubicle and broke into fragments, which caused bruising on her back.

Mangena concluded through his analysis of the shooting scene and wounds on Steenkamp’s body from post-mortem photographs that one of the final two bullets went through Steenkamp’s left hand before penetrating her skull as she held it over her head.

The policeman said he couldn’t determine the order of the last two shots.

Pistorius, 27, is charged with premeditated murder in Steenkamp’s shooting death on Feb. 14 last year and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

He says he shot Steenkamp, 29, by mistake through a locked door in his bathroom because he thought she was a dangerous nighttime intruder.

Pistorius says Steenkamp went to use the toilet during the night without him knowing, but prosecutors maintain he killed her after a loud argu-

ment that caused her to possibly flee and hide in the toilet area.

As Mangena threw his hands up to cover his head in court and replicate the “defensive position” he said Steenkamp took as the last shots were fired, Pistorius put his fingers in his ears in an apparent attempt to block out the testimony.

Mangena said Pistorius was probably on his stumps when he fired, supporting the athlete’s statement that he was not wearing his prosthetic limbs when he opened fire.

Sri Lankan police said they have released two prominent human rights activists whose arrests over the weekend drew international criticism. Ruki Fernando of Colombo-based INFORM and the Rev. Praveen Mahesan, a Catholic priest, were released, said police spokesman Ajith Rohana.

Their arrests Sunday drew wide criticism from international rights groups who said the detentions were arbitrary and an attempt to silence critics. Rohana said police had not yet decided whether to charge the two activists, but were “ascertaining the collaborative evidence.”

Palestinian killed Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian who was trying to break through the West Bank separation fence, the army said.

Three suspects were spotted at the fence near the West Bank city of Hebron, and one of them was cutting through it, the army said.

The soldiers first called on the men to leave, then fired warning shots in the air, after which they fired at the legs of the one cutting the fence, the army added. Soldiers took the wounded Palestinian to an Israeli hospital but he died of his wounds there, the military said.

Storms last straw An Indian official says at least seven debt-ridden farmers have killed themselves after freak hailstorms and heavy unseasonal rains destroyed crops across much of a western state. Maharashtra government spokesman Satish Lalit said authorities have confirmed seven farmer suicides.

But Kishor Tiwari, president of pro-farmer group Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, on Wednesday put the toll much higher, at 32.

Navy HQ seized Crimea’s self-defence forces stormed the Ukrainian navy headquarters in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol, taking possession without resistance a day after Russia signed a treaty with local authorities to annex the region.

The self-defence forces took down the gate and made their way onto the headquarters’ premises. They then raised the Russian flag on the square by the headquarters. The unarmed Crimean self-defence forces waited for an hour on the square before the moved to storm the headquarters.

Botulism scare spooks Chinese consumers

By Christopher AdAms Chinese consumers regard New Zealand milk products as less safe than those produced in our key dairy competitors like the United States and Europe, Massey University research suggests.

The university surveyed 531 people in Lanzhou, the capital of China’s Gansu province, in October last year - two months after Fonterra’s botulism botch up.

The false food scare spooked consumers in the world’s second biggest economy and is likely to have influenced the survey re-

sults. Just over 28 per cent of respondents rated New Zealand’s dairy products as “not very safe”, a much higher percentage than for products from Australia (14.8 per cent), the US (13.2 per cent) and European Union (12.5 per cent).

This country fared much better than China in the survey, however, with 64.9 per cent of respondents rating Chinese dairy products not safe.

Almost 72 per cent of those surveyed regarded New Zealand dairy products as “very safe”, compared with 87.6 per cent for European products, 85.1 per cent for Australian products and

86.9 per cent for US products.

Massey University professor of food safety and microbiology Steve Flint said that if the botulism scare did affect the survey, the research demonstrated the power of publicity in influencing people’s trust in food.

“In New Zealand we pride ourselves on our reputation as a provider of safe food to the world,” he said. “Our economy is based on this reputation.”

Flint said it was important that Prime Minister John Key generated positive media coverage that restored Chinese consumers’ confidence during his visit to China.

The ‘Your Warehouse’ app includes the first nation-wide barcode scanner, that will allow shoppers at competing retailers to spot check the price of identical products with the Warehouse price, so consumers can get the best deal.

The Warehouse chief executive Mark Powell says becoming a leading ‘multichannel’ retail-

er and challenging traditional shopping is a key strategy.

“With over 50,000 products online, the new app means users will have New Zealand’s largest catalogue of products at their fingertips,” Powell said.

The ‘Your Warehouse’ app was developed by New Zealand mobile solutions provider Sush Mobile.

But at some point Dodds must have known or ought to have known what he was doing was wrong, Dixon said, and submitted that sales manager personally should be penalised $5000.

This took into account his early admission of liability and cooperation with the commission, the regulator’s lawyer said.

CHH lawyer Simon Ladd said this wasn’t a case of a “hardcore cartel” and that it ran for a shorter time than other cartels discussed in court by Dixon.

Dodds’ lawyer, Allison Ferguson, said her client did not intend to break the law and had shown genuine remorse.

“This breach comes down to a mistake on his part and it’s had serious consequences for him,” Ferguson said.

Justice Venning expressed sympathy for the situation Dodds was in before reserving his decision.

Carter Holt Harvey’s price-fixing in the Auckland timber market was worth less than $1000 to the company in direct gains but could now land the forest products firm a $1.85 million fine.

Carter Holt Harvey has admitted its part in anti-competitive activity in which three big Auckland suppliers - Carters, PlaceMakers Cook St and PlaceMakers Mt Wellington - agreed to sell structural timber at a set price between September 2012 and March last year.

While the price-fixing sparked a Commerce Commission investigation and court action against CHH, PlaceMakers’ owner - Fletcher Distribution - was granted immunity after it alerted the regulator to the anticompetitive conduct.

CHH co-operated with this investigation and when the commission filed proceedings

“understanding” had the purpose, effect, or likely effect of “controlling or maintaining prices ... for commercial construction jobs in the Auckland market during the relevant period”.

He described the price-fixing as “sustained conduct” and said these types of arrangements have the effect of “softening” competition overall.

The maximum penalty CHH could face is $10 million and the $1.85 million agreed upon by the commission and the company took into account its cooperation and admission.

While agreed by the parties, the penalty is ultimately decided by the judge.

For Dodds, Dixon said the man did not deliberately set out to breach the Commerce Act and that this wasn’t a case of meetings in a smoke-filled room or on a golf course to arrange a cartel.

Have Chamberlain – will travel!

That’s the story for a group of Australians who are crazy about their distinctive orange tractors.

Members of the C9 Club, named in recognition of the tractor’s nine gears, have recently been touring New Zealand and collected a few Kiwi enthusiasts on the journey.

The South Island leg of C9s Kiwi Trek began at McLeans Island in February and headed north to Hanmer then through Molesworth Station to the top of the island, before heading down the West Coast.

The contingent then rumbled up through the centre of the island, ending the 2500km Kiwi trek at the

Ten tractors, each carrying two people took part in the trip. Some of the tractors towed campervans to accommodate participants.

While Chamberlain tractors are an Australian icon, there are a number of Kiwi enthusiasts, like Bruce and Elizabeth Elwood, from Rangiora, who joined the convoy for part of the trip.

“We travelled with them for about 1200km,” he said. “It’s been good fun,

we’ve made some great friends and we’ve got some good contacts to get spare parts now.”

The Kiwi trek was the latest in a series of adventures the club has undertaken. Members have driven their tractors through the Nullarbor desert in a 14,000km coast-to-coast journey across Australia, and repeated the exercise in the United States – where they spent three months driving across the country.

The Burrell Showman’s Traction Engine is relatively common in the United Kingdom but is rare in New Zealand and it did a star turn at the 100th Methven show. Post show it was parked outside Methven’s Blue Pub and attracted large crowds. The engine, from Dorset, England, is the king in the world of traction engines and was in town with its sister engine. QUICK MEAL

■ To make the fish: Preheat oven to 200°C. In a bowl mix sundried tomatoes, cashews, lemon juice, lemon zest, basil and parmesan.

W

hen the organisers of the Rakaia School Fair being held on Sunday decided to feature a classic car display, they didn’t have to look too far because Melissa Kilday, who is on the organising committee, and her husband Terry have a fabulous Mini.

We asked Terry how he came by this special car and this is the story, in his words: “I’ve had a liking for things with motors and motorsport for a time.

I especially like cars from the ’60s, ’70s, and early ’80s. I guess that’s a reflection of my age - I was born in the ’70s.

When I was at primary school my parents had a 1980 Mini (think it was a LE).

Mum carted me and my two brothers around in this Mini that we called mushroom because of its light brown colour, for years.

One of my good mates at high school had late ’70s Clubman 1275 which was such an awesome thing to drive around in.

My first car as a teenager was a 1979 Hillman Hunter. It was a rear wheel drive blue beast with its 1725cc motor and 4 on the floor.

It was such a simple car mechanically and that still appeals today.

I was inspired to get moving with a car I could tinker with by a young guy I worked with, who bought himself a 1960-something Kombi wagon and did

it up. I never hesitated in my thinking that I was going to get a Mini.

After about six months of Trademe searching, something finally popped up that looked straight, was all there, had no rust and was in my price range.

I purchased the Mini sight unseen from a guy in Blenheim who was moving to the North Island and wanted it sold, I moved pretty quickly on the sale because I believed it was a great deal.

The seller was moving the next weekend, so he drove it to Picton for me and left it with a friend who lived there.

Dad and I booked a couple of train tickets to Picton ASAP and armed with a small tool box drove it from Picton to Rakaia in an afternoon. The Mini didn’t

miss a beat and you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

I had set myself a budget even before I purchased the Mini.

My initial spend would dictate how much I could afford over the coming winter months.

My plan was to not go overboard with modifications, but as always one thing leads to another and before you know it I’d spent the budget.

There are simple things you can do to give a few more horses to 1100cc motors, such as LCB extractors and twin SU carburettors.

I thought the easiest thing to do would be to take the motor out, which brought to my attention there were things that could be done to freshen it up more.

Back to Trademe where I came across an 1100 block and gearbox that had been reconditioned with a 40 thou re-bore, new

pistons and rings etc.

It also had a “fast road” Kent spec F10 Kelford Cam. I also upgraded the carburettor and exhaust system as well as the ignition system.

After making it go faster, it needed to stop better.

The old front drum brakes have been swapped out with 8.4 inch disc brakes and I also refreshed the rear brakes, master and slave cylinders and replaced the suspension shocks.

Disc brakes means wider front wheel profile, so needed to space out the rear wheels, which of course means flared guards.

Although you don’t tend to see many on the roads, there are still a lot of Minis about and parts are relatively cheap and easily sourced.

My wife, Melissa and I are involved in the Canterbury Mini Owners’ Club.

Defending champ will be pushed hard at Pukekohe

This is a blast with other Mini owners going on day trips around the wider Canterbury area, grasskhanas, track days and even a trip to Nelson for the Mini nationals.

This is my weekend car, but any excuse to warm it up and take it for a spin.

It never fails to put a smile on my face whether I’m roaring around in it, working on it, or just even cleaning it, I love people coming up to me to have a look and have even been pulled over a couple of times by random people for a yarn.

Everyone has a story about a Mini, whether ownership or misspent youth. I have been told that one Mini usually leads to two and then more.

This hasn’t happened yet, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t been looking. The Mini still has its original mustard paint job, which

one day I’ll have freshened up.

Of course it will stay the same colour; it’s all part of its charm. I am currently working on the interior, with new carpet going in last weekend.

I have also sourced a good second hand leather interior which I hope to have in by the Rakaia School Fair, this Sunday.”

The fair will held at the Rakaia School between 11am and 3pm and along with classic cars there will be lots of stalls, yummy food on sale as well as a live band, entertainment and a particular mustard colour Mini.

As round three of the 2014 V8 SuperTourers series fires into action this weekend at Pukekohe, everyone in the field will have their eyes set on defending champion Greg Murphy.

It’s not going to be easy to get one over the former V8 Supercars full-time driver, as the field will be on Murph’s turf.

At Manfeild in February the four-time Bathurst winner swept all three races at the second round of the series, but Simon Evans pushed him hard and established himself as the new star of the series.

Aucklander Evans missed the overall round victory by just one point - Murphy won the races but Evans scored extra points for his qualifying performance and for taking fastest lap in all three races.

“Simon just drove beautifully,” said Murphy. “He just pushed and pushed, he didn’t give up.

It’s not easy - I was pushing eleven-tenths all the way. If I relaxed a bit he was right on me again.”

Evans has been racing for a number of years now and while he’s tasted success over the years, the step up into the big V8s has come with a few hiccups. However, he has been steadily developing as a driver in the category and has been the big improver this year, now able to push the frontrunners hard.

“I’m really looking forward to the weekend. Obviously Manfeild was really good and we probably had the quickest car that weekend but we couldn’t quite get there [beat Murphy],” said Evans.

“Obviously Pukekohe is Murph’s patch and he’s going to be hard to beat there. He’s going to raise the bar even more at Pukekohe and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Evans and his one-car team have made good progress this season and now have the car pretty much sorted and he feels a lot more comfortable behind the wheel now, which allows him to get the most out of the car and setup.

It’s been a little hard being a one-car team as there is no one to share data with so it’s all been a bit of trial and error. Now,

though, everything has come together and Evans is looking to make that last push to dominate the rest of the field on a regular basis.

“I think we’ve definitely made a breakthrough. We’ve been chipping away and the results are starting to come and we feel like we’re really on top of the car now.

“It feels like a little car now and when I put my foot down I want more power. I’m really comfortable inside the car now and I’ve got my head around the dynamics of the car. Last season I struggled in qualifying but I’ve got my head around that now and with the help of Stephen Giles and the extra seat time since last year has all helped,” said Evans.

Last season Ant Pedersen pushed Murphy hard for the title and while the International Motorsport driver is in third place after two rounds, he’s due a bit of luck this weekend.

Meanwhile, Andre Heimgartner has calmed down a bit from last year. He has for the main stayed out of trouble and found discretion can sometimes be the better part of valour, and has steadily collected points to sit in second place.

Qualifying is on Saturday and the three races take place on Sunday.

Club news 20 Ashburton Guardian Allenton Croquet Club There was a good attendance at our March meeting with three apologies.

The first of the Gala Cup series will be played at Allenton on Friday 21st March.

These matches are between Allenton, Waireka and Methven.

The annual Interprovincial Doubles tournament between Canterbury and South Canterbury will be held at the Waireka lawns on the 23rd March.

The Morrissy Mallet, the Hazel Leonard Trophy and the Waireka Tray will be played at the end of the month. These are contested for by the winners of each grade from the three local clubs.

The end of the season is approaching rapidly and the sports club closing day is on April 13 at 1pm. Where has the season gone.

Croquet players and Bowlers will play their respective games from 1pm to 3-30pm followed by afternoon tea, entertainment, raffles, happy hour and a “corner to corner” competition with the bowlers on the croquet greens and croquet players on the bowling lawns.

A finger tea will be at 6-30pm and the presentation of trophies will follow.

All members please bring a plate of finger food.

Members were reminded of the fun Quiz on May 2 and to get their teams together.

Ashburton Bowling Club This weekend sees the final play of the competition season with Closing Day and the Bird Cup being played at 1.30.

Please wear whites, put your name on the white board men’s end of room and be prepared to stay for the prize giving and dinner to follow. Hubert has the tickets, $10 and no plates of goodies are needed.

The last day for the ladies was held on Tuesday when drawn triples were played and Noeline, Gillian and Rosemarie were the winners with 3 wins, Heather, Relda and Alison came in 2nd with two wins.

The green played well and there were no excuses for bad play.

The humidity had an effect on the ladies and I think we were all glad when the day was over.

We wish the players in the men’s Gala and Challenge good luck also the Ladies playing Premier and Prestige in the weekend.

The men’s competitions are winding down and we hope all are finished for trophy day on Saturday.

Some folk find it hard to fit all the matches in, but we all have to make an effort or default.

A full list of prize winners will be printed at a later date.

My congratulations to all the Championship winners this season and you put in your best efforts in the district playoffs although no winners in the finals. Congrats to all the new players who kept rolling up and trying to improve. It all paid off.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club There was a full house for a special club night this time.

St Patrick’s night was celebrated in style with the committee going all out to help us entertain a group of fellow music lovers from the North shore, Nelson organ Club, Hibiscus coast, Warkworth, and Whakatane, who were down this way tripping around, and enjoying the sights of Ashburton.

The venue was literally green with envy, thanks to the efforts of Janet and Rose, and members who lent out their clovers, shamrocks, tableaus, tea towels and leprechauns.

Also to the members and visitors who went green for the evening.

The North Island group had a busy weekend with dinner with us at the RSA on Saturday, hosts of Judy and Michael for a beautiful meal on Sunday, a visit to Violino’s on Monday, and completed their trip at our club night.

The evening rang with Irish songs throughout, and only one or two double ups. Amazing.

The entertainment consisted of, the singing group, Margaret Twamley, Karen, Lorraine, (the jokes were good too) keyboard group, an hilarious skit, by Lester, Margaret, Kathryn, Ron, Failie, and Audrey at the piano, Ann, a piano trio by Rose, Audrey, and Failie, and finishing up with the accordion group. Play ins by Michael and Rose.

As usual our very busy Rose excelled herself with all the work leading up to our visitors visit here, who by all accounts were full of praise, both for our district as a whole, and the friendly homely people we have here, who seem to have that ‘country touch’. Praise indeed.

Also worth mentioning was the super job Ann made of the elaborate programme.

Appropriately Irish on every page.

It was pleasant to see the visitors take home a goodly amount of the raffles also.

Ashburton Hearing Association Third time lucky! After having to postpone our bus trip twice, we finally set off for Akaroa on March 13. The weather played its part and a perfect, sunny day was enjoyed by all.

We travelled via Burnham through Lincoln, stopping at Little River for morning tea.

Our next stop was at Barry’s Bay Cheese Factory where members enjoyed seeing a video on the cheese making process and some taking the opportunity to purchase their favourite cheese.

We were greeted in Akaroa by the sight of sparkling water, sunny skies and a very holiday atmosphere.

The bus stopped at the wharf and everyone was given the opportunity to make their own way around the village, and either choosing to have their picnic lunch by the sea or deciding on which café, from the many, to dine at.

The afternoon passed very quickly and it was soon time to board the bus for the trip back home.

This time we stopped at Lincoln for ice creams, and then continued through Leeston on our homeward journey.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Section Saturday 15th March saw our first in house ladies singles tournament.The weather gods were kind to us as the sun shone most of the day, keeping everybody warm but not too hot.A good day’s play resulted in the following results. Championship Winner: Irene Her-

Ashburton Rose Group On Wednesday 12 March we visited Daphne and Barry Rissman’s lovely garden. Unfortunately due to sickness we only had a few members attend. It was a lovely warm evening and Daphne and Barry’s garden was amazing.

They have a very large garden and lots of lovely roses which still had lots of blooms on them.

They also have other plants in their garden and many lovely shrubs and trees.

After spending time looking around their garden we had a pot-luck tea.

Unfortunately we are losing one of our members Bev Tuck who is moving to Rangiora.

Bev used to show many lovely roses in our table show and we will miss her. We wished her well in her new venture.

Our next meeting will be a visit to Ruth Hall’s Musical Garden.

College Cricket Club Firstly a big thanks to all those involved in any of the College teams this season, whether it be coaching, scoring , a manager or simply involved as a parent helper ; special mention to all those that helped out with the wicket preparation - all much appreciated even though the kids might forget to thank you.

The third grade final was keenly contested between the two College teams, Green and Gold. Green won the toss and elected to bat. Gareth Hunt struck early removing the dangerous Harry Ferguson (1).

A good steady partnership of 27 accrued between Angus MacKenzie (13) and Daff Philip (10).

The introduction of Harry Watson and Brad Horrell swung the game towards Gold as between them they bowled 10 overs, took 6 wickets (three each) and only conceded 8 runs. Johnny Regaldo (13) tried valiantly to push the score along but was eventually out to Horrell and Green were dismissed for 73. Ben Niles, Sam Turner and Liam O’Connor picked up the rest of the wickets for Gold.

Opening for Gold Tom Ravenscroft and Zach Naldrett played solidly before the partnership was broken on 24 when Ferguson had a direct hit on the one stump he could see to dismiss Ravenscroft (10).

Niles (9) pushed the score along before being clean bowled by Matt Begg.

Hunt stepped up and made a brisk 20 while Naldrett was 18 no as they secured the third trophy for Gold and the clean sweep of all three competitions this season.

Gold was made up of the following players that also won the two competitions before Christmas - Andrew Jopson, Andrew Tait, Baily King, Cameron Jopson, Gareth Hunt, Harry Watson, Jayden Reid, Josh Buchanan, Logan Havis, Sam Turner, Thomas Ravenscroft and Zach Naldrett, after Christmas (after losing a few to the first XI and boarding schools) they were joined by Ben Niles, Brad Horrell and Oliver Adlam as well as a few ring ins from the other teams when they were short.

Creative Fibre Ashburton The March meeting was held at the Allenton Rugby Club on Monday 16th March.

There was a good attendance of women.

We had two visitors who are more than welcome to join said our president.

Mention was made about the Christchurch Creative Fibre Shop soon to be open at Woolston.

Already, up market craft shops and eating places are in operation and it’s a great place for tourists and plenty of car spaces are available. It is a busy place.

Our group has donated 92 baby hand knitted singlets to babies in the Mid Canterbury area and the mothers are very appreciative.

The area meeting will be held in Ashburton on June 16 and it was suggested that we have a Show and Tell table. With the display we had today we could be well proud of our work.

The National Rural Women requested our group might like to have a working display for their conference at the A and Showgrounds on Saturday, March 29.

This has been taken up and some of our work will be on show too.

The Mystery Bus trip is still planned for Monday April 14 but members need to check up as we might have to change it as some places we could go to might clash.

The next spin-in day is at Susan Tait’s home on 54 Gray Street, Hinds. March 31.

Please note our next official meeting at Allenton Rugby Club is April 7 as Easter Monday falls on the usual day.

THE SHOW AND TELL table had many articles to show. There was plenty of baby wear.

Two sets of jersey, matching and mittens, white prem singlet, several hats and boottees, a hug-me-tight jacket, another wee jacket, a child’s poncho, 4 small knitted dolls, knitted outfits on Barbie dolls, 2 white little singlets, beret and boottees, dressed large doll, adult gloves, colourful hat, magic square rug for the back of a chair, red sleeveless adult jacket, pink and white lady’s jersey a woven scarf which won a class of 110 entries at Methven, a woven material skirt and jacket made 40 years ago, a sleeveless top with a spider’s web look, three greeting cards, four crocheted Christmas tree angels, and a lady’s hugme-tight.

The meeting closed at 11.30 and the informal time and lunch was what happened for the remaining part of the day.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc On Monday March 17 vice-president Ruth Thomas welcomed 50+ members to the monthly general meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

The room was gaily decorated with green bunting and shamrocks in recognition of St Patrick’s Day. Ruth immediately introduce the guest speaker; Andy Dickerson from CDHB as he was on a very tight schedule with another meeting to attend in Christchurch later in the afternoon.

Andy started out by explaining the size and scope of services offered by this very large organisation, and continued by relating his personal experiences during the February earthquake and how the earthquake impacted on the DHB with the loss of critical care beds and 1400 damaged rooms.

The value of strong leadership during this very disruptive period soon became evident, and was a major reason for the positive recovery from disaster.

The future of hospitals in the area was outlined as follows; Burwood is to become a world class re-hab and elective surgery unit; Christchurch is to be rebuilt with 24 new theatres, a new acute care unit and a cancer care unit; there will be a heli-pad on the roof; Ashburton will have new theatres and is in the design stage at the moment, demolition has taken longer because of asbestos.

There is an information booklet available about Ashburton Hospital. Andy also covered how the selection of candidates for the DHB happened.

Questions from the floor covered the voting system for the DHB; parking at Christchurch Hospital; 24 hour acute admission unit at Ashburton. A very attentive audience enjoyed this in depth look at the activities of the DHB. Greer Ricketts passed a vote of thanks and presented Andy with a fruit and vegetable tray.

Ruth continued the meeting by asking for apologies, and announced that subs are due and that Age Concern is holding a fashion food and flowers function on April 4.

The raffle was drawn, and then Bernie and Peter entertained with a medley of Irish tunes.

Afternoon tea was served The meeting closed at 3.15. The speaker at the next meeting on 28th April will be Sharnie Williams from Grey Power Electricity.

Methven Bowling Club Our main event last week for the club was the ladies Lynnlee Smith Memorial trophy for junior’s pairs. We thank Gary and Lyn Eddington and Maureen Cullimore for their ongoing sponsorship.

phy were Sandra Holdom and Anne Reid. Well done girls. Runner ups were Wendy Suttie and Sue Hamilton.

The winner of The Maureen Cullimore Plate was Judy Moore and Maureen White; 2nd Win Breach and Rose Johnson. This was a really good day and enjoyed by all the junior ladies.

On Tuesday at the reps against Ellesmere Mid Canterbury Ladies were the overall winner. Well done to all the players Our junior Men played their final of the fours championship. The winning team is Ivan Syme, Roger Callaghan, Noel Bilby and Jeff Limbrick. Congratulations guys.

The final of the ladies singles will be played this week between Ruth Smith and Melva Middleton. Ruth had a good win in the semi final.

At the Friday Triples Alan Hill, Melva Middleton and Graham Brooker were 3rd.

Last weekend Wendy Suttie playing for Dunsandel was runner-up in the c/c fours in Christchurch. Well done The Hornby team of Trevor Kennett, Craig Carter and Steve Hopper won the Regional Zone 5 upper south island Triples, well done.

They will now go to Dunedin to the play off s in the National final in June; best of luck to you all.

Upcoming club events: Ladies Day out and break up Tuesday 25, don’t forget to be at club rooms at 11am. On Sunday 30 10,30am start is the Brown and Blue pub sponsored Morris Carter Memorial Trophy.

MSA Outdoor Bowls With the bowling season nearing closing day; there is once again not a great deal to report. The weather has played a big part in games not being played, but has of cause affected all clubs.

The 2/3’s sections have played Kaipoi and Richmond recently but as no results were forthcoming one must take it that there was nothing to write home about.

Men’s Championship Fours were played last week and the Champions are Dave Muir(s) Guildford Lane, John Argyle, Larry Neal.

Congratulations “Champs” This now completes the Championship games with only Club games to be finalised.

During the week Ladies Section travelled to Pleasant Point to play the annual exchange “Grammy Bear” Tournament.

The day was overcast but what a lovely friendly day was had by all.

The only fly in the ointment was having to leave Grammy behind, after having had her live with us for so long, MSA felt confident that she would return with us and therefore left he “P.J’s” at home.

We all were comforted by the fact that she was only going to stay away 12 months and would be well looked after in such a “Pleasant” atmosphere. A most enjoyable day.

Sunday was to Host the return visit for the Loftus Cup but once again the heavens opened up and put paid to any play at all.

Very disappointed players, but have still got the Get-Away Tournament on April 6 to look forward to.

Rakaia Garden Club Our planned trip for the March meeting to visit two gardens in Leeston was cancelled due to them being damaged in thestrong winds a few days before.

Our next meeting is to be held on April 14 at 2pm in the Rakaia Community Centre.

Our subject for the meeting is landscaping so bring your landscaping hints and ideas to share with the other members.

King takes seat on the bench

BY JONATHAN LEASK AND APNZ Mid Canterbury product Chris King has been moved to the bench as the Highlanders come off a short turnaround to meet the Hurricanes at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin tomorrow night.

Highlanders’ coach Jamie Joseph has made five changes from the side that narrowly lost to the Western Force last Saturday with a short six-day turnaround before facing a buoyant Hurricanes side coming off a massive 60-27 win over the Cheetahs in Wellington.

Ma’afu Fia gets his first start of the 2014 season in the front row with King shifting to the bench and Brad Thorn returns to start at lock after being sidelined with a rib injury since round three.

The other change in the forward pack has Elliott Dixon start on the blindside in place of John Hardie with TJ Ione coming onto the bench.

In the backs Phil Burleigh will also receive his first start for the season while Patrick Osborne returns from a high ankle injury to start on the wing.

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett has also shuffled his squad slightly following injuries to James Marshall and Blade Thomson.

Four-time cup winner to drive at Methven

The Patrick O’Reilly Snr Memorial Handicap Pace headlines the March race meet at Methven on Sunday, featuring a guest driver.

Four-time New Zealand Trotting Cup winning driver Todd “The Wizard” Mitchell is the Methven Trotting Club’s guest driver, coming onto the home turf of record seven time New Zealand Cup winner Ricky May for the first time.

Tony Herlihy had filled the guest driving role in the past two years with Mitchell offered the opportunity to try his luck on the tricky Mt Harding grass track course for the first time.

Mitchell is now 28 wins short of his 1000th career driving win and would love

to add a win at Methven to that list, as well as get one up on Herlihy.

After an unsuccessful first visit, Herlihy picked up a win on his return trip when saluting the judge with Jackaroo Bromac for trainer Mark Jones.

Mitchell has been called upon by Jones to drive Fair Dinkum Bromac in the day’s feature race, the $10,000 O’Reilly Memorial.

The Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen trained Arising Easton brings hot form to the race with two wins from the last three starts, including a win at Methven, and eight placings from the last 10 starts.

Live Lea is also a contender coming off a win on the grass at Reefton.

In the 12-race programme Mitchell has two drives for Nigel McGrath,

Macy Blue Chip in race 7 and Pepe Bromac in race 11, the Carl Markham trained Special Bella in race eight and David McCormick’s Glendaloch in race three as his confirmed drives with at least two more potential drives in the 12-race programme.

Race three also features the lone entry from local second-year trainers Lawrence McCormick and Chauntel Kentish, who have Gee It’s A Boy, which claimed the stable’s fourth win at Oamaru in January.

May has seven confirmed drives on the day to chase his almost-customary win, suffering a rare winless day when the season opened back in September but has managed a win in each meeting since.

The first race is on track at noon.

Ashburton shooters hit the mark

Ashburton clay target shooters hit the mark at different times in Hamilton recently.

Ashburton-based Mike Sime, shooting for the Timaru club, excelled at the nationals while Matt Lovett had a disappointing nationals shoot but was then on target in the world championships.

After missing out during the nationals Lovett took aim at the world championships.

“The weather was a bit trying during the nationals and one bad day ruined my qualifying,” Lovett said.

“I didn’t start the worlds too good but made a pretty good recovery to make the final.

“I dropped 14 points of my first 50 on the first day.

“My aim was to make the final and to do that I had to be in the top 10 per cent. I never expected to win it but to make the final was my aim and I was happy with that.”

After the poor start Lovett recovered to be one of the 103 finalists out of the more than 600 competitors from around the world, and finished 60th overall.

Lovett had previously attended the world championships in Wales in 2012 but had a much better performance in his home country.

In the nationals Sime was in the thick of the action, winning the Double Rise Trophy after a three-way shoot-off and was third in the Reloaders Supplies Trophy after a four-way shootoff.

His solid form had him make the New Zealand Mackintosh team where he had the second best score for the team in the postal shoot competition against other nations.

Sime narrowly missed out on qualifying for the world championship final.

Lauriston chases silverware

The third instalment of the Mid Canterbury Champion of Champion bowls takes place at Methven on Sunday, with the top fours combinations going head-tohead. After winning their club title the top fours combinations in the district vie to be crowned number one. Seven clubs have a senior men’s team and five quartets will contest the senior women’s title, with three teams in the junior men.

The triples and pairs titles were decided at the start of the month and the singles will be decided the following Sunday at Hampstead.

Ride, rest, ride

Nonu, Kaino to start on bench against Cheetahs

After spending seven days riding the Tirreno-Adriatico tour in Italy, Ashburton cyclist Hayden Roulston has five days to recover before Hayden the Milan San Roulston Remo. Alberto Contador took the win of the Tirreno-Adriatico by just over two minutes, with Columbian Julian Arredondo the top finisher for Trek coming in fifth 2.54 behind the two-time Tour de France winner.

Fabian Cancellara was second in the final stage, a 9km time trail, but was still back in 51st on the general classification. Roulston was 66th, 31.36 minutes behind Contador. His Kiwi team-mate Jesse Sergent pulled out before the penultimate stage after he had been dealing with an ingrown toenail that finally got the best of him. The pair are both in line to ride for Trek in the first classic of the European summer, the 298km Milan San Remo on March 23.

Senior cricket signs off for the season on Saturday when Lauriston look to defend the Muirhead Rosebowl against the Tech Stags in the final at the Ashburton Domain Oval.

Lauriston already have the Studholme Shield, the prize for being the top team across three rounds in both 45 over competitions, but desperately wants a second piece of silverware.

They went within a whisker of the Prichard Shield, losing a tie-breaker to Methven, and

had the Bevan Stroud Memorial Challenge Trophy taken off them in the final round by the Tech Sharks.

Lauriston got some revenge for that by ousting the Sharks in the semi-final last week, ending the Sharks’ run of four straight finals.

“After the hiccup the week before against the Sharks the guys came back and really stepped it up last week,” Lauriston’s Nick Gilbert said.

His side has been the top side all season and now with the “same 11 that has done the job all season” Gilbert hopes they

can finish as the top side.

The sides have met three times this season with Lauriston winning two of the three including the most recent meeting by 54 runs.

While Lauriston look to retain the trophy the Stags are chasing their first piece of silverware.

“It’s the first semi and final a lot of the boys will have played,” captain Morgan Gallagher said.

“We are all pretty pumped for it.”

The Stags joined the senior ranks in 2009 and after being

cellar dwellers made the top four in the 2011-12 season only for rain to rob them of a chance to play their semi-final, with their higher ranked opponents advancing to the final.

Lauriston were the other semi-finalist to miss out that season but returned last season to beat the Sharks for the title.

Gilbert hoped his side’s finals experience, and playing experience across the board, would sway the game in their favour but the Stags have shown on numerous occasions that they can rise to the challenge.

Ma’a Nonu and Jerome Kaino will resume their Blues careers from the reserves bench against the Cheetahs at Eden Park on Saturday, coach Sir John Kirwan said yesterday.

Midfielder Nonu, back at the Blues after a season at the Highlanders, and loose forward Kaino, who has returned after two years in Japan, will bolster the home side’s bench as they look to kick-start their season following two defeats in South Africa.

Neither player went to the Republic, with Nonu working on his fitness following ankle surgery and Kaino preparing for a return to Super Rugby after two years playing for Toyota.

“They just haven’t played any footy,” Kirwan said when asked why they weren’t starting. “One has been in Japan and the other one hasn’t played. To run out at this level is a bit like Kevvy [Mealamu] and Woody [Tony Woodcock] a couple of weeks ago. You just can’t expect them to start, and so the follow-

ing week they’ll be available full on. That’s the strategy we have used and we’ll stick to it.

“They are ready to play. Ideally we’ll get them out for the last 30 minutes and then they’ll be full on into it.”

The Blues have been looking for more strength in the midfield since Francis Saili’s foot injury and Nonu could be just the man to provide it. Kaino, too, will have an important role to play in adding steel to the forward pack.

Asked what he wanted to see from Kaino, one of the best

loose forwards at the last World Cup, Kirwan said: “I hope he brings Jerome Kaino, that’s all I’ve asked him to do. A hard edge, real good physicality and hard ball carrying. We want to get the Jerome Kaino who left New Zealand a couple of years ago back as quickly as possible.

He’s been fantastic while we’ve been away, he’s worked really hard, so we’re expecting him to deliver that from day one and I’m sure he will.”

Hooker Mealamu is unavailable due to his calf injury.

Dragon Boats return to Lake Hood for the next fortnight. The beat of the drum and the iconic paddle boats have the South Island Championships on Saturday and return a week later for the national championships. Dragon boats made their debut on the lake in 2009 and it has quickly become the venue of choice with dragon boat organisers ranking Lake Hood as a world class venue. After making their debut on the lake in 2009, was home to the nationals in 2010 and 2012. The northern half of lake will be closed on Saturday and next weekend.

Ex-All Black in bust-up

By Steven Holloway The death of All Black captain Frank Oliver led to a fiery on-air clash on Radio New Zealand on Tuesday night.

Former All Black Andy Haden was invited to pay tribute to Oliver on Checkpoint, but took exception to the way host Mary Wilson opened the segment. It started with a clip of a commentary from the 1978 All Blacks test against Wales in which Haden dived out of a lineout in a bid to milk a penalty and save the game.

As the commentary faded out, Checkpoint switched to Haden on the phone and Wilson asked if he remembered the infamous incident.

Haden: “Yeah, I do, why don’t you talk about Frank?”

Wilson: “I do want to talk about Frank, I do want to talk about Frank, a big shock.”

Haden: “There you go, there you go, you should talk about Frank rather than dredge up all this stuff at this time. That’s pretty low.”

Haden: “I would like to remember him as a very very good All Black lock. Something you wouldn’t be familiar with.”

With two rounds remaining, the Ford Trophy is fascinatingly poised.

ND and Canterbury are joint top and can feel good about their chances of being in the four-way play-offs.

But it’s not so comfortable for Auckland, who remain on 12 points - having got just two points from their last four games - with Wellington now equal and Central Districts and Otago just two back.

Otago rattled up 332 for six in Invercargill, the highest one-day score on Queen’s Park.

Twilight tennis winds down Denys Patterson reaches for a forehand return at the final night of twilight tennis last night at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

Tonight the Sunset Doubles has its final night as the tennis season winds down.

The Browning Shield will again be held in Ashburton on March 29-30 under the tournament format trialled last year.

The revised format has all the

fixtures at one location in one weekend, where Ellesmere reclaimed the shield, going unbeaten last year.

The interclub competitions concluded a fortnight ago but the juniors have one last day returning on March 31 for a fun tournament and prizegiving.

The last date on the calendar is a senior open drawn doubles on April 6.

Smith continues to alienate himself from fans

BY MICHAEL BROWN AND KRIS SHANNON All Whites’ defender Tommy Smith continues to alienate himself from New Zealand football fans and cause friction with the national body after prioritising his club over his country.

The 23-year-old said he was left “annoyed and disappointed” by a club-versus-country row when he made himself unavailable for the All Whites’ 4-2 defeat to Japan earlier this month, and disputes he threatened to quit international football ahead of last year’s World Cup play-off against Mexico.

during the two-leg play-off against Mexico, but was left disenchanted after being forced to miss an extra match for Ipswich.

He wanted to play in their 3-2 win at Blackpool the weekend before the first leg, but Fifa rules saw him forced to sit out the clash.

The Herald on Sunday reported in December that Smith had threatened to quit international football ahead of that match if he wasn’t allowed to play against Blackpool.

The centre-back wouldn’t be drawn on the nature of his discussions with team management, but made clear his frustration over the incident.

“International fixtures aren’t meant to conflict with your club games and it really annoyed and disappointed me that they wouldn’t allow me to play in that game [at Blackpool],” Smith told the East Anglian Daily Times.

Smith’s attitude seems to fly in the face of concerns many players had over the All Whites’ buildup for the playoff against Mexico, which they lost 9-3 on aggregate.

It’s understood a number of senior players felt let down over preparations and planning for the last campaign and want a culture change - a review being conducted by New Zealand

Football should be complete next month.

Smith has won 27 caps for the All Whites and represented New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Olympics, but admitted his loyalties lay with the club that paid his wages which was why he missed the Japan friendly.

“It was a bit of a no-brainer for me. As much as I love playing for New Zealand, obviously my bread and butter is Ipswich Town and I want to do as well as I can for them in order to push for these promotion places.”

Ipswich currently sit ninth in the English Championship, six points outside of the play-off

places as they push for promotion to the Premier League.

That position saw Smith and NZF come to an agreement over his absence for the Japan game, something he hopes can continue after a recent change in regime.

NZF clarified their position around player availability, with chief executive Andy Martin stating the expectation set for all players.

“We expect all of our eligible players to make themselves available for selection as we seek to build our programme towards the Fifa World Cup in Russia in 2018,” Martin said.
