It is only a matter of time until someone is killed in an alcohol-fuelled assault, an Ashburton security firm says after two late-night attacks at the weekend. Two young men were hospitalised in separate incidents, one in which friends were left to cradle their unconscious friend’s head while they waited for an ambulance. Sergeant Bryan Ennis, of Ashburton, said police were searching for the group of men responsible for the alleged assault outside Dick Smith Electronics on East Street about 2.45am Sunday. One of the victims was taken to Ashburton Hospital and later transferred to Christchurch. That was after a man was found by police on West Street at 3.40am Saturday, also believed to have been assaulted. “He was placed in the recovery position as he started to vomit and he was soon
taken away to hospital,” Mr Ennis said. Talbot Security Group managing director Dean Talbot said the incidents were becoming the sad reality of the Ashburton CBD between 2.30 and 4.30am at the weekend. He said on average there was at least one violent incident a weekend which required an ambulance. The increase in violence appeared to have begun in November. “There’s been a lot of fighting and the intoxication levels have gone from one extreme to the other, I don’t know what it is. “But someone is going to end up getting killed, all it takes is a king-hit for someone to fall to the kerb and hit their head.” Mr Talbot turned up to the East Street assault to find two men tending to their unconscious friend, believed to have been “knocked out by a sucker punch”.
