THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Local crime stats down
Crime continues to drop in Mid-South Canterbury, with the latest figures revealing a 3.7 per cent decrease in 2013. New Zealand Police headquarters released reported crime statistics for the 2013 calendar year yesterday, which recorded another fall for the Mid-South Canterbury policing district, on top of a record 17.1 per cent drop in 2012. “If you look at it alone, three per cent doesn’t look like a great result, but when you put it on top of 17.1 per cent that’s a significant drop in crime and fewer victims which is what we ultimately want,” Mid-South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said. In total, 5170 offences were recorded in Mid-South Canterbury, 200 fewer than the 2012 figure. In 2010 there were 7165 crimes reported. Mr Gaskin commended his staff, putting the falling rate down to the “prevention first policy”, and the work police did in conjunction with community groups such as Safer Ashburton. “We can’t do it alone, we don’t have the ability to be everywhere at once but with support we can cover most areas. Unfortunately there’s still a high number of crime reported and we will be looking to further reduce that.” Reported crime in the Canterbury region dropped a record 5.6 per cent while nationally it fell 4.1 per cent to the lowest rate in
29 years. In the Mid-South Canterbury district, there was one homicide compared with four in 2012, a 7.5 per cent drop to 558 acts intended to cause injury and 57 recorded sexual assaults, down from 81 in 2012. Burglary was up 10.5 per cent to 619, while public order offences and fraud and deception crimes dropped 11.6 and 31.7 per cent respectively. - By Myles Hume
