Police praise drivers in alcohol blitz BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton College ball goers, their parents and others out over the weekend have been commended by police for their good behaviour. Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said yesterday that as a result of a community focus on the ball, police had increased their alcohol focus by deploying extra Ashburton staff. These were in turn supported by staff from road policing and public order teams from Christchurch. Police prevention patrols had carried out three drink driving checkpoints where 730 roadside breath tests were conducted, local hotels were visited enforcing acceptable standards of intoxication and patrols enforced the local liquor ban. As a result only one driver was processed for drink driving, no breaches of the liquor ban were detected and intoxication levels in premises visited were addressed with the duty manager at the time.
“The organisers of the college ball should be very proud of their efforts, supported by the police focus on alcohol ensured less victims within our community,” Mr Banfield said. Last week the Ashburton after-ball co-ordinators, Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADS), told the Guardian it was reducing the time for students to get from the ball to the afterball, in an effort to cut down on pre-loading. The service did not confirm whether students would be breath tested going into the after-ball, however the Guardian understands students were not breath tested. ACADS also warned of a Community Alcohol Action Project blitz focussing on those going to the ball, and reminded parents not to drink before driving to or from the ball or after-ball. The breath testing undertaken by police was certainly thorough, with the Guardian aware of one parent who was breath tested both on her way to and from the after-ball.
